I think that's the road that goes to the Mactan Shrine.

You can clearly see from that pic that there are small model houses with a corresponding flag. Each of which represent a typical/local house architecture/design of the country by which the flag represents.

Btw, if I were Bigfoot Studios, I would not delve into making Hollywood-ish movies. They should, instead, concentrate on making art films or indie-like films as these types of films tend to have bigger impact in the international media these days. Furthermore, indie/art films do not cost as much as Hollywood-ish films. Besides, Bigfoot Studios' films (which represent Cebu's film-industry-at-infancy) should find its own identity apart from Hollywood just like what India's (Mumbai's) Bollywood has done for itself.

Films like Deep Gold, imho, do not have a wide-ranging appeal since, aside from a relatively low-budget, it doesn't have a ground-breaking premise/storyline. Moreover, the film stars are fresh-faces. I mean, a film of such familiarly formulaic and generic synopsis could churn a profit (here in the Philippines) only if it has some star-power to back it up. I assume this film will come out similar to those C-class movies you see in HBO (i.e. Manticore).

Imho, Bigfoot should make movies like: Magnifico, Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Olivares, Mga Pusang Gala, and Kubrador [to name a few].

Osmeña: SRP master plan designed to be flexible

The South Road Properties (SRP) does have a master plan, said Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, but it’s “flexible” to fit the needs of any investor who is opening a business at the 300-hectare reclamation project.

“It always has to be flexible because our customers are developers not individuals. Our master plan can always give them a general idea or concept of what we allow there (in a specific portion of the SRP),” Osmeña said.

“We can't (also) sell the SRP to the Japanese (for funding) without a master plan,” he added.

Osmeña denied accusations by former mayor Alvin Garcia that the city's lack of a master plan is causing the delays in the disposal of parcels of land at the SRP.

Based on the city's master plan, Pond F that is considered as a “prime area” is designated for “high end” developments like Bigfoot's plan to put up a yacht club.

The property can also be used for the establishment of a private school there, the mayor said.

Osmeña said the SRP is so flexible that can be sub-divided into six development areas. The city government can later open access roads in between these properties.

A portion of the SRP located near Pond A was already set aside for Bigfoot's use.

The mayor recently entered into a 25-year lease contract with Bigfoot where the city government is expected to earn a lease of at least $.40 per square meter.

Bigfoot is putting up a sound stage that will be used as sets for international films that will compete with those that are found in Hollywood in a two-hectare property in Pond A.

“Do you know what impact this will bring to Cebu if all the actors like Tom Cruise and James Bond movies are shot here? Patay gyud ang Manila ana,” the mayor said.

Bigfoot’s architects were scheduled to visit the SRP yesterday to assess the area where they plan to put up the their sound stage.

Osmeña said Bigfoot is also interested to buy 16-hectares at the Pond F for P12, 000 per square meter to open a yacht club.

Other investors like Philinvest and SM Prime Holdings are also interested to get a share of the reclamation project.

Both have proposed a joint venture with the city government wherein they will help the city pay off its P6-billion loan for the reclamation project, said Osmeña.

The SRP will be used as the city's equity that will be converted to shares in a corporation that will be created to manage the joint venture.

“It's a good offer but they are not clear as to what they are going to put in there and how soon,” said Osmeña.

Osmeña is apprehensive that SM will take custody of the SRP to prevent any competitor from opening a business there.

He also wanted to wait for the completion of the South Coastal Road tunnel that will further enhance the project's marketability and will lead to an increase in the market value of the reclamation project.

SRP tops items for P166-M dev’t fund

Road and drainage improvement projects, the completion of the city legislative building and various construction projects in the barangays are among the items that will be funded by Cebu City’s P165.8-million local development fund (LDF).

The City Development Council approved the project through a resolution during their February 21 session.

A copy of the approved resolution and a breakdown of the projects are included in the items that will be discussed during Wednesday’s council session.

Twenty percent of the city’s Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) or P166.8 million was set aside as the city's LDF.

The biggest share of P31.5 million will be spent for development projects at the South Road Properties (SRP).

Nigel Paul Villarete, city planning and development officer, said part of this allocation will be given to families that were affected by the city’s development projects, as disturbance fees. The rest of the amount will be spent for the opening of interior road networks.

Twenty-five million pesos will be added to an earlier allocation of at least P60 million that Mayor Tomas Osmeña set aside for the ongoing renovation of the city’s legislative building.

Other items that the LDF will be funding include several construction projects in the barangays, as well as the improvement of barangay infrastructure such as repairs of existing buildings and facilities. This will be worth P20 million.

An allocation of P15 million was set aside for lot acquisition.

Villarete said the amount includes an allocation for the purchase of properties for road right of way.

The city’s gender and development projects as well as various road improvement projects were allocated with P10 million each. P14.8 million was set aside as financial assistance to non-government organizations and as counterpart fund for UNICEF-initiated programs.

An allocation of P7 million each will be set aside for equipment rental and the repair and maintenance of city-owned equipment. The city’s street lighting program and furniture purchases will be budgeted with P3 million each.

The enhancement of the city’s tax collection and accounting system will be funded with P4.5 million.

Villarete said the remaining P0.99 million in the LDF will be used for future projects identified by the city government.

There are some newly-placed heavy cement blocks lining a block of land in Asiatown IT Park, in front of the i2 building. Is construction going to begin on something there? Anyone know what it is?

Also, there's now an "i1" sign on the PIPC building, just like i2. :)

Fresh News!

10 storey Skyrise 2 will start its construction this summer. It will be build beside The Loft. We don't have any perspective here, but we do have an AutoCAD drawing plans and construction details. I'll just post the perspective of it once we have it here at the office. But Summer 2007 is a month away, so it's better to just wait and see Skyrise 2 rise from the ground of Asiatown IT Park.

FYI!

Skyrise 1 and 2 are own by a Cebuano family who owns Golden Peak and Oro China.

I think it's going to rise on that vacant property beside Skyrise 1 bro (the other side) and not necessarily beside Loft.. We went there a few days ago, and Hans pointed on that specific site.

Anyway, it looks like there are plans to connect the dead-end roads with the main road in Banilad (Gov. Cuenco Ave.).

OT:

Kudos to ericdee, his Sinulog 2007 photos were featured in Philippine Digest (The Netherlands).. I hope this would result in more Europeans coming to Cebu.. :okay:

Saw the thick dark smoke around 4 in the afternoon in the office.

Even at eight in the evening (was going to SM), the fire is still there.

By the way, the name of the barangay is Guizo, not Guiso.

As what I have said before that 15 storey TG or TGU Tower (across/fronting i2) will commence its construction by summer of 2007, same with 10 storey Skyrise 2 which will be build beside Skyrise 1 (Not beside The Loft, my bad!). This is just basing on what we have done here at the office. We already plotted, blue printed and submitted the final sprinkler and electrical plans and drawing details last week of February for both TG/TGU Tower and Skyrise 2. So far there were no changes that has been address to our attention here at the office.

Gokongwei-led land firm tells mayor it wants properties at SRP

ROBINSON’S Land joined other commercial center developers in showing interest in the South Road Properties (SRP) and has told the mayor it wants to buy lots there.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he is expecting the company’s technical team to visit the SRP anytime to check what development plans they can undertake in the area.

“Mr. John Gokongwei called me last night and said he read in the papers that SM is planning to buy the SRP. Then he said ‘I want to buy it also’,” the mayor told reporters yesterday.

Since Osmeña is not inclined to sell the entire 295-hectare facility to SM Prime Holdings Inc., its representatives are now studying the possibility of purchasing certain portions only, said Joel Mari Yu, director of the Cebu Investments Promotions Center (CIPC), the marketing arm of the SRP. Yu said they have not closed their doors to SM but they also cannot sell the whole SRP to only one entity, especially since Bigfoot Global Solutions is already leasing a two-hectare lot there.

Bigfoot also wants to buy the 16-hectare Pond F at P12,000 per square meter or a total of P1.94 billion. Yu said Bigfoot is their priority buyer at this time.

“We’re still talking to SM. They know the mayor is not inclined to give them the entire SRP but they’re still interested so we told them to go back to the original proposal where they can buy as much land as they want, but not the whole area,” Yu told Sun.Star Cebu.

He further said that the SRP will be opened to as many investors as possible, and not just to SM and Bigfoot.

Malls

Filinvest also has a standing proposal to develop a portion of the SRP, and Ayala also expressed interest to undertake a development project there.

To make sure that malls and commercial developments will not dominate the SRP, the CIPC have invited private investors to put up two standard factory buildings that can be leased out in the future.

In his news conference yesterday, Osmeña showed reporters the design of the movie production complex that Bigfoot will construct on the two-hectare lot beside Pond A.

The complex will have four state-of-the-art soundstages, a hotel with boutiques and a building that will serve as assembly point for props.

Apart from being a new industry in Cebu, Osmeña is prioritizing Bigfoot as an investor because of the jobs it will create and the international market it will attract.

It now appears that no less than two of the country's taipans of industry, with two of the country's biggest conglomerates behind them, are locked in a subtle war to gain control of the 295-hectare property.

Yesterday, Mayor Tomas Osmeña announced that John Gokongwei Jr., founder and chairman of JG Summit Holdings, called him up to express his interest in buying and developing a huge chunk of the property.

" I have good news. Yesterday, I had a phone call from Big J, " Osmeña told reporters, barely able to contain his excitement

He said Gokongwei told him he got interested in the property after reading in the news a few days ago that SM Prime Holdings of Henry Sy is also interested in a major acquisition at SRP.

Aside from other businesses, both Gokongwei and Sy are into retailing, mall operations and property development.

' I read in the newspapers that SM will buy SRP. I want to buy it also. I have money, " Osmeña quoted Gokongwei as saying.

But unlike SM, which reportedly plans to buy the entire property, Gokongwei only wants to buy 78 hectares and is sending a team of technical people to negotiate with the city government on how to work out the purchase.

The mayor did not give additional details concerning his conversation with Gokongwei but expressed excitement over the new development.

A source close to Gokongwei confirmed that the taipan, who built his fortune peddling goods on a bike around Cebu, confirmed the interest to buy into the SRP was real but that details were yet unavailable.

JG Summit is the parent company of a vast empire that includes airline, mall and hotel operations, banking, food manufacturing, telecommunications, petrochemicals, power generation, publishing, real estate and property development, and textiles.

Last week, it was Osmeña who also announced that SM is currently negotiating with the city government to buy the entire SRP and assume the outstanding debt obligations the city incurred in financing the project.

Osmeña said he has not yet decided on whether or not he would accept the proposal of SM for fear it would build a mall at the SRP. The mayor said a mall at SRP would eventually kill small department stores in the city.

In fact, he said, SM proposed two years ago to put up a mall at the SRP but that he turned it down because a mall is " a low low priority " business at the property.

SM is also among the country's biggest conglomerates, occupying a dominant position in most of its lines of business, namely, shopping malls, retail merchandising, banking and finance, and property development.

In the same press conference, the mayor also showed reporters the project plan of Bigfoot Global Solutions which is planning to buy the 16-hectare Pond F of the SRP.

The city government has already signed an agreement with Bigfoot, which plans to build a studio and soundstage in a two-hectare portions of the lot it will buy. In fact, it has already paid the city government over US$500 as a five-year advance payment.

Osmeña admitted to being hungry to sell SRP because the city government is ominously facing a problem on liquidity over the next two to three years.

Earlier, the mayor said the city government only needs one sale and after that it would become more selective in choosing the investors it would allow at the SRP. "Make a deal now because after that we will be picky."

He said the city is also making sure projects put up at the SRP would not only provide income but also employment opportunities for the Cebuanos.

Osmeña admitted the city is currently enjoying a fallback situation but is optimistic that it can sell five to 10 hectares of SRP and pay its debt obligations.

I'm glad they are giving malls low priority:) Its about time someone we get this kind of movement. They should protect smaller shops and department stores and create a pedestrian friendly environment in the SRP. That is where new urban planning is heading, and since SRP is still empty, they can easily do this.

If SM's intentions are indeed to build a mall in SRP, the Cebu government should give them a firm NO.

WOMEN’S groups in Cebu yesterday brought to President Arroyo’s attention their opposition to the plan of dividing Cebu into four provinces.

Their opposition is contained in a resolution presented to the President during the Cebu Province Seventh Women’s Congress at the Capitol Social Hall.

In the resolution, the women’s groups said a survey conducted in 2005 showed that majority of the representatives of women’s groups in Cebu are not in favor of the proposed bills seeking to divide Cebu.

The survey results showed that 350 delegates from national government agencies, local government units, the academe and non-government organizations cast their votes and only 15 approved of the plan.

In the same resolution, the group also adopted the Provincial Women’s Commission as the official voice of the women in the province.

The ordinance that created the commission is the brainchild of Provincial Board Member Agnes Magpale, a known advocate of women and children’s rights.

Even before officially launching its first subdivision project, half of its townhouse units have already been sold, a real estate developer said.

This is proof of Cebu’s bullish real estate industry, said Johndorf Ventures Corp. (JVC) marketing manager Glenda Tupaz.
“Fifty percent of the units are already sold,” she said.

Johndorf, an affiliate of ProHomes Development Inc., will be introducing to the local market this month its 522-unit Genesis Townhouse Subdivision.

The socialized housing subdivision, which is ProHomes’ first real estate project, sits on a 3.4-hectare property in Sudtunggan, Basak, Lapulapu City.

Named after the first book in the Bible, Genesis subdivision “marks a new beginning for starting families and the budget conscious market,” Tupaz said in an interview.

RE: fire in mandaue, rumors said that the fire's planned already.a friend of my officemate was one of the affected settlers, he overheard "daw" a group of people (i'm not sure though if they're brgy.officials) who mentioned that there'll be fire since they were already told to vacate the lots but they didn't...so, he prepared his lot title and impt.documents and indeed, the tragedy happened, so good for him, he saved his proof that he owns the lot..(not that bad, though it's the only thing he saved, of course his life.oh well)...

I didn't know that the fire was just so near the CICC... I hope though that the Mandaue city government will take advantage of the fire to give the victims a decent living. They should pursue their so-called "housing project" so that they can relocate them as soon as possible.

Before the ASEAN Summit, I always hear news of that housing project but now.......?? :dunno:

cent 1: It is unfair to the residents there who have already legally acquired their lots to just suddenly move them even if their houses have been burned. Same as those of living in barrio luz who have already paid for their land. To suddenly uproot them or move their properties somewhere else just because the middle and the upper classes don't like the way they look.

cent 2: Squatted lands in the midst of controversy almost always end up in flames, and the land claimants always swoop in afterwards to prevent them from rebuilding. Remember what happened to the Pahina Central Fire a while back? Strange don't you think?

A LOCAL businessman is initiating moves to help prepare Mactan Island as an information and communication technology (ICT) destination in the province.

CoralPoint Development Corp. (CPDC) president Efrain Pelaez said CPDC subsidiary Mactan South Bend Technologies Inc. (MSBTI) has entered into a joint venture with Ray Networks Inc. (RNI) to provide wireless Internet connectivity and networking and administration solutions to business establishments in the island.

“This will provide Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) connection and other ICT-related services in Mactan Marina Mall and in remote areas like Punta Engaño,” Pelaez said during the memorandum of agreement (MOA) signing between MSBTI and RNI in Mactan Marina Mall, Lapu-Lapu City last Friday.

CPDC operates Mactan Marina Mall, CoralPoint Resort Village and Mactan Southgate Plaza Inc., to name a few.

According to the MOA, MSBTI, which serves as the sales and marketing arm, together with RNI, which will focus on the systems integration, will offer ICT-related services to clients in Mactan Economic Zones 1 and 2, resort owners, and other business establishments.

“We don’t intend to compete with telecom (telecommunication) companies,” said RNI managing director Juner Yaneza, adding that businesses that need specific network solutions, such as a billing system, will be the company’s niche market.

Yaneza said RNI delivers “pro-active” service to clients.

“Once we receive the call, we should be able to respond in less than an hour,” he said.

Yaneza also said proponents of the project are hoping to extend the coverage to the entire province.

Karen Pajarillaga, MSBTI vice president for operations, said the ICT-related services, which costs about P5 million to 6 million, will cater to small and medium enterprises that “are in need of faster and better services.”

The project’s theme is dubbed “MInDS@WORK.” MInDS stands for Management of Integrated Doable Solutions.

In line with the agreement, Pelaez told Sun.Star Cebu that a 10-story IT facility will be constructed this year within the vicinity of Mactan Marina Mall.

He said the new facility will house not only an IT office on the upper floors but will also include a commercial space, parking lot and an IT school.

He added that the company is currently looking for tenants, like call centers.

According to Pelaez, Mactan Marina Mall is working on its plan to acquire an IT park status within the year once the ICT-related services will be rolled out.

“It will promote the mall as an ideal IT park complex,” he said, since the 1.8 hectare Mactan Marina Mall has banks, food establishments, and spas, among others as occupants. (MMM)

Angara pushes for Cebu water plan

CEBU CITY — Senator Edgardo J. Angara today called for a comprehensive water plan for Metro Cebu, a metropolis of over three million people, to further boost its industrial and tourism potentials and solidify its position as the premier city of the south.

"First things first and for Metro Cebu, this is a water plan that will ensure steady supply of fresh water," said Angara, during a political campaign here.

Angara said that Cebu City is now more than "the Queen City of the South."

"The pace of growth in Metro Cebu surpasses expectations. It has manufacturing, it has services, it has tourism. It has an energetic real estate sector that can compare with the most vibrant real state activity in Luzon," said Angara.

For visitors from Luzon, Metro Cebu now looms as an alternative to a trip to Hong Kong or Bangkok. Students from all over Eastern and Central Visayas attend Metro Cebu-based colleges and universities, said Angara.

So as not to imperil its lofty position in business, services and tourism, and as an educational center, the water problem should be met head-on, he said.

Angara said that the government agencies dealing with the water sector, NGOs and local government units should draft the comprehensive water plan for Metro Cebu.

Angara also shared the observation of Metro Cebu-based NGOs that the state agencies concerned with water distribution and development "are too fragmented."

"There are several agencies concerned with water and among these are the National Water Resources Board, the Department of Public Works and Highways, two agencies under the Department of Agriculture and the Local Water Utilities Administration," Angara said.

During droughts, ad hoc agencies are often created to trouble-shoot problem areas in water supply and generation, he added.

Angara had spoken in international conferences on the big problem related to water supply and generation.

As secretary of the DA, he also carried out several drought-alleviation programs for the country's farmlands.

Our port is really very, very dirty. I think they should clean it up or at least rehabilitate it.

Anyway, the article was not posted here. The CIP has shelved "permanently" the plan to build an international port in Liloan although they are not discounting the possibility of building it instead at Mandaue's proposed North Harbor Reclamation Area.

They are also planning to put up security cameras at the port similar to those installed during the ASEAN Summit..

no malls, but once srp is developed, there should be something like "Savemore" supermarket with food court, to cater to employees and business immediate needs, that way, if you're an SRP locator employee, you dont have to go all the way to colon or SM just to buy snacks/meals.

but its not really an "overhaul" face lift, they just changed the "maroon colored band" in the middle of the structure to peach. basically, its still the same color. :but nonetheless, i'm glad that they repainted it. hehehe.

I thought they'll refurbish the whole facade and make it look modern. Oh well, but at least, it has joined the bandwagon of "repainting" buildings :)

yeah, i think this one's like the newly renovated Greenhills Shopping Center here. looks sort of upscale from the outside but a mix of tiangge-type and medium/upper-class retail shops inside. Parkmall looks way better though. :cool:

Tomas sets guidelines for sale of SRP lots

MAYOR Tomas Osmeña told Cebu City barangay captains last Saturday that he intends for the South Road Properties to “create economic opportunities,” which is why he is not simply selling off the 295-hectare property.

He said he wanted to ensure that those who will buy SRP lots will put up businesses that will generate jobs.

“What are they going to do with it? Will it create jobs, or mosulod ra ang mga kanding diha kay maghulat sila kanus-a mosaka ang presyo?” the mayor said in explaining his parameter against which all offers will be measured.

He said Bigfoot Global Solutions, Filinvest, SM Prime Holdings Inc. and Robinson’s Land of the Gokongweis have all shown interest in the prime property.

He agreed for Bigfoot to lease two hectares for 25 years because owner Michael Gleissner was raring to set up an international studio, which Osmeña said provides an opportunity for local artists and skilled laborers to showcase their talents.

Bigfoot is also interested to buy 16 hectares of the SRP, especially the beachfront area where Gleissner plans to build a yacht club, at P12,000 per square meter or a total of P1.94 billion.

Filinvest also has a standing proposal to develop a portion of the SRP. Ayala Lands Inc. also expressed interest to undertake a development project there.

No monopoly

To make sure that malls and commercial developments will not dominate the SRP, the Cebu Investments Promotions Center (CIPC) has invited private investors to put up two standard factory buildings that can be leased.

CIPC is the marketing arm of the SRP.

Its director, Joel Yu, earlier said that since the mayor is not inclined to sell the entire 295-hectare property to SM Prime Holdings Inc., its representatives are now studying the possibility of purchasing certain portions only.

“I need you to understand because potential customers will also not understand my priorities,” Osmeña told 63 barangay captains gathered in the Association of Barangay Councils assembly last Saturday.

He said that he is selling portions of the SRP just so the City could have enough funds to pay its amortization for the next two to three years.

The SRP was built from a Japanese Government loan amounting to about P6.3 billion.

The mayor said Filinvest owners arrived in the city last Friday to inspect the SRP, as they are interested to buy 50 to 100 hectares. (RHM)

'Go Negosyo' program to join CBM 2007

Impressed by the Cebu Business Month (CBM 2007) national launching recently held in Manila, the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE) decided to bring to Cebu its flagship project the "Go Negosyo" program.

PCE secretary Jose Ma. Conception III met with the CBM 2007 team who went to Manila last week led by its chairman Samuel Chioson to take advantage of the biggest business event for the launching of the provincial "Go Negosyo" program.

"We will make Cebu as the first stop for the 'Go Negosyo" provincial launching," Conception told CBM 2007 lead organizers.

PCE aims to spawn the creation of "Go Negosyo" communities around the country. These are communities where the norm and way of life is for the academic, business and government sectors to seamlessly collaborate on improving lives of the people through entrepreneurship.

An ecosystem of constant networking, mentoring and cooperation will thus prevail among academics, entrepreneurs, industry experts and venture capitalists, with the government providing support through a viable policy infrastructure. Campuses will also be transformed into genuine business incubators.

The CBM 2007 which will highlight the three powerful sectors in Cebu, the Information Communication Technology (ICT), Tourism and Entrepreneurship will benefit from the participation of "Go Negosyo", as this government-led program offers "Tourism Negosyo", spurring the development of "Techno-Negosyo" and creating solid pool of "teen-preneurs."

"We want to work with the CCCI in doing 'Go Negosyo' promotion in Cebu," Conception stressed.

According to Conception, the "Go Negosyo" provincial launching on the CBM come June, would also highlight the most successful Cebuano businessmen.

Cebuanos can also take advantage of the different models to be presented by state-led PCE such as to start tourism-related businesses considering Cebu's position as center for tourism in the Philippines.

After successive consultations with other entrepreneurs, government agencies and NGOs, financial institutions and the academe, PCE focused on enhancing the delivery of entrepreneurship education both formal and non-formal, developing entrepreneurial mindset, and unifying key stakeholders to build an environment conducive for starting a business.

A 12-member delegation for the CBM 2007 national launch for the Manila media went to the country's capital city to introduce Cebu's biggest business event nationwide.

The CBM 2007 which carries the theme "Lets Go Cebu!" would package the province as a hub for foreign investors, particularly in the business process outsourcing sector, for information and communications technology development and operations; and for travel and tourism.

Shanties to go once city manages fort

All shanties constructed by vendors beside the Fort San Pedro in barangay San Roque Ciudad will be demolished once the city starts managing the maintenance of said the public park.

Vice Mayor Michael Rama said the shanties of vendors are eyesores not only to tourists but to anybody who wants to tour the fort, which is one of tourist attractions in Cebu City.

Fort San Pedro, also known as Fuerza de San Pedro, is a military defense structure built by the soldiers under the command of Spanish conquistador, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and the then Spanish government in Cebu.

It is located in Cebu City's port area in what is now called Plaza Independencia National Park.

The fort is one of the oldest, smallest and well preserved colonial forts in the country which occupies a land area of 2,202 square meters.

It was first constructed out of log and earth in 1565 for protection from violent attacks from the native Sugbuanons and Muslim pirates. But it was then developed, upgraded and constructed using hard stone, which made the surrounding walls stronger and tougher with high and thick walls.

Today the fort houses a museum displaying artifacts from the era such as documents written in Spanish, paintings, sculptures and cannons.

Large statues of Legazpi and Antonio Pigafetta are also outside the fort.

But the beauty of the fort is said to have slowly diminished after the Philippine Tourism Authority allowed the vendors to build shanties beside the plaza and collect daily fees from them.

Even San Roque barangay captain Roger Ruizo is also against vendors in the area. Mayor Tomas Osmeña suspended the demolition of said shanties until last December 31 only, but up to now these have not been removed. - Rene U. Borromeo/MEEV

■ Last year, Filipino travelers liked best Cavite, which had 617,23 visitors, followed by Cebu with 384,530; Baguio City, 345,401; Davao City, 270,077; and Aklan, 243,306. In the same period in 2005, Filipinos voted Cebu first with their feet, followed by Davao City, Negros Occidental and Iloilo.

Ranhill eyes Cebu road,
water supply projects

RANHILL Bhd, an engineering and construction company, is eyeing a 5 billion pesos (RM350 million) highway project and a 3 billion pesos (RM210 million) water supply project in Cebu province in the Philippines.

Officials from its unit, Ranhill Engineers and Contractors Sdn Bhd, expressed their interest in the two projects during a visit to Cebu recently, according to the Philippines' SunStar online news.

The trans-axial highway project - the biggest in the 400-year history of Cebu - includes the construction of 2 billion pesos (RM140 million) worth of road network in the hinterlands that will connect Santander in the south and Daanbantanyan in the north.

According to the news report, UEM World Bhd had earlier expressed interest in the highway project.

The Philippine Government plans to publish internationally in June the notice of the bidding for the project, which will have water, power and agriculture components.

Business Times was told that Ranhill officials recently visited Cebu to explore business and investment opportunities in the province, but the company declined to comment on the trip.

Apart from the highway project, Ranhill Engineers and Contractors is also talking with the Pilipinas Bulk Water Resources Corp (PBWRC) for possible partnerships in PBWRC's major projects in the republic.

Ranhill is among the firms which submitted letters of intent in relation to the proposed Carmen bulk water supply project, an unde- rtaking that seeks to provide about 45,000 cu metres of water a day to Cebu through the Metropolitan Cebu Water District.

The report noted that PBWRC's negotiations with Ranhill are still ongoing, and that Ranhill officials will be coming back to Cebu in a month or two to gather more information on the trans-axial highway project.

Aside from the construction of the road network, the project includes the 1 billion pesos (RM70 million) drinking water distribution system component, 1 billion pesos wind power system, and installation of water pipelines that is estimated to cost 1 billion pesos.

It will take three years to complete all components of the project.

gosh! im late going to schoenstatt shrine for our recollection yesterday, sunday. my friend said that they passed SRP. :gunz: huhuhuhu.... we depart the place six o'clock and it was too dark as we passed in SRP, i saw a constructed fence in between cebu and talisay. Cebu shipbuilding firm to build Scotland Ferry

A shipbuilding firm based in Balamban town, Cebu has again showed the world that Cebuanos are capable of building world-class vessels.

FBMA Marine Inc., an Aboitiz Corp. – owned shipbuilding firm, signed a contract to supply a 70-meter catamaran ferry last Feb. 19 with Pentland Ferries for operation from Scotland to the Orkney Isles.

And in early March, FBMA Marine launched the hull 1023-Seascape 1, a 50-meter all aluminum Ropax ferry for the new South Australian operator, Sea SA.

Andrew Banks, owner of Pentland Ferries said during the contract signing that “the new ferry will allow the firm to significantly increase the quality and value for money that it was offering to the local community and visitors to Orkney.”

The modern catamaran ferry will operate on Pentland Ferries existing route replacing an older car ferry.

The new catamaran will carry up to 8 trucks, 32 cars, and 250 passengers and can travel the ferry route in 45 minutes, said the FBMA in a statement.

The contract highlights FBMA Marine’s reputation in supplying cost effective aluminum and steel ferries in the world market, the FBMA said in a statement.

Craig Patrick from FBMA Marine said “then company values and importance of the Pentland Ferries contract and is extremely proud to be building this pioneering vessel for Pentland Ferries.

The vessel is designed by the naval architects company Sea Transport Solutions in Australia who have developed their well proven design to meet the route requirements in Scotland. Construction will commence within weeks of signature and delivery will be in 2008 for the start of the new summer timetable.

Gawad Kalinga to build 100 houses for fire victims

A hundred two-story houses will be given free to fire victims in Mandaue City courtesy of the Gawad Kalinga Foundation. These will be built at the site where the fire occurred last Wednesday.

Mandaue City administrator Serafin Blanco said this after a meeting with the officials of the foundation yesterday.

Each house can shelter two families.

Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano has also instructed Blanco to write all the 170 local government units in the country to donate one house each for the fire victims.

Ouano, who is the vice president for the Visayas of the League of Cities said that each house costs about P80,000.

Last Wednesday, more than 1,000 houses mostly made of light materials were reduced to ashes when a fire broke out, lasting about four hours and leaving more than 7,000 individuals comprising 1,500 families homeless in barangay Mantuyong and Guizo.

The city government, through the City Social and Welfare Development, has been receiving donations from different organizations and civic groups including private companies.

Global BPO firms eye Cebu

CEBU’S positioning as the next information technology (IT) hub in Asia has proven to be a magnet for big names in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, as they are now contemplating on expanding their operations in the province.

Joel Mari Yu, Cebu Investments Promotions Center managing director, announced the entry of Fluor Corp., Accenture, and IBM’s outsourcing firm IBS Philippines, indicating an employment of about 3,000 Filipinos.

In an interview, Yu said he could not determine a specific timetable when the companies will begin operations in Cebu, as things are currently under negotiations.

He assured, though, that “it will be anytime soon.”

US-based Fluor Corp., which Yu described to be “the world’s largest construction company” will need between 500 to 700 software engineers, among others.

Skills in computer-aided design may come as an advantage, he said.

Yu added that Fluor Corp. is considering opening its Cebu branch either at the Cebu Business Park or at the Asiatown IT Park.

The Cebu office is an expansion of its Alabang operations in Luzon, which currently operates with over 1,500 people.

Fluor Corp., is one of the world’s largest, publicly owned engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance service companies.

The company’s primary objective is to “develop, execute, and maintain capital projects on schedule, within budget and with operational excellence.”

It maintains a network of offices in more than 25 countries worldwide.

According to its website, Fluor is a Fortune 500 company that emerged as “number one” in the “engineering and construction” category among America’s largest corporations.

Human supply

Accenture, on the other hand, will be operating in a 700-seat facility at the Cebu Business Park, Yu said.

He added that the company will be occupying six floors of a high-rise building that is currently under construction.

Accenture is a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company.

It aims to identify new business and technology trends and developing solutions to help clients worldwide enter new markets, increase revenues in existing markets, improve operational performance and deliver products effectively and efficiently, its website said.

Meanwhile, computer technology giant IBM, is planning to open a 1,500-seat outsourcing facility in Cebu, through IBM’s transformation outsourcing operations in the Philippines, the IBS (IBM Business Services), Yu said.

However, the number of job openings will depend on the human resource supply in the province.

In November last year, IBM opened its Cebu office at i2 Building in Asiatown IT Park.

Earlier, IBM business services president Renato Jao admitted that the company is in talks with Cebu officials to explore the possibility of its opening a BPO arm.

If the plan pushes through, he said the venture will initially handle “eight, mostly global, clients.”

School on tourism courses to rise in Mactan mall

CAPITALIZING on Mactan Island as a tourism destination in the province, a local businessman is considering opening a school on short-term tourism-related courses.

CoralPoint Development Corp. (CPDC) president Efrain Pelaez Jr. said the school will be located within the proposed 10-story information technology (IT) facility that will be constructed this year inside the vicinity of Mactan Marina Mall.

Train

He told Sun.Star Cebu that it will offer three to six months of restaurant and hotel maintenance courses that intend to train Cebuanos on front desk jobs, to name a few.

He added that service apartments will also be available to potential trainees.

Practicum

The planned “tourism school” was conceptualized since he is currently involved in 50 restaurant groups, like Café de France and Mactan Majestic seafood restaurants, among others, that are located in the Mactan Marina Mall.

“They can do a practicum in the different restaurants in the mall,” Pelaez said.

Placement

With the goal of providing job opportunities, the school intends to provide a placement service for work in different hotels, cruise liners and airline companies.

He also said opportunities to work in different hotels abroad, particularly in the Middle East, are being eyed at since the school will be a joint venture between a private international company and a local entrepreneur who owns a school.

Status

Earlier Pelaez said Mactan Marina Mall is working on its plan to acquire an IT park status within the year once the IT-related services will be rolled out.

“It will promote the mall as an ideal IT park complex,” he said, adding that the 1.8-hectare mall has banks, food establishments and spas, among others, as occupants. (MMM)

for people who are into religion--just like me--try visiting Tabor Hill in Talamban,Cebu, it is a shrine owned by the Discalced Augustinians--been there earlier this evening with my lola who did the stations of the cross with her barkada:)--they have a 33-meter high cross, which at the base, has a painting of the crucifixion where medallions bearing relics of the saints present at the crucifixion were attached...aside from their relics, the painting also has a piece of the True Cross, a piece of the pillar of the scourging, a chip from the table used during the Last Supper, and rocks from Calvary and the Virgin Mary's house...

Cebu Chamber to go on 2-month Asian road show

THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce (CCC) is embarking on a two-month road show in key Asian cities to drum up interest for the 2007 Cebu Business Month (CBM) and hopefully persuade regional stakeholders in the tourism and ICT sectors to attend the event.

Representatives of the CCC, along with key government officials and industry leaders, will tour Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and Beijing from March 21 to April 29 to make presentations to different groups in these countries on the business opportunities that Cebu will highlight during the CBM’s major activities scheduled in June.

Dr. Mila Espina, Cebu Chamber tourism chairperson, said the different Philippine embassies and missions in the said countries have already made preparations for the meetings that their team will have with the investors, travel agents, regional heads of multinational companies, and other parties based in the cities they will visit.

For the tourism sector, for example, Espina said the business chamber wants to attract investors that would address the shortage of hotel rooms in Cebu.

Espina said Cebu is projected to register three million tourist arrivals in 2010 from about two million in 2006.

Espina said they have no problem in accommodating tourists who check in at resorts and pension homes because the province already has plenty of those.

The problem, however, is with the five-star hotels, which businessmen and sophisticated tourists prefer.

“With our present capacity, we would be 20-percent short of hotel rooms if we will base it on the projected tourist arrivals by 2010,” Espina told the BusinessMirror on the sidelines of the Manila Launch of Cebu Business Month Friday at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel.

The major hotels in Cebu right now are the Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort, Cebu City Marriott Hotel, Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, Park Place Hotel and Cebu Plaza Hotel, among others.

By nationality, the Japanese and Koreans are top visitors in Cebu, with the Chinese and Americans far behind.

Some of the Koreans, Espina said, stay in Cebu for up to one year as they also take educational courses there.

In the ICT sector, the Cebu delegation hopes to persuade the Filipino IT professionals in the foreign cities to be visited to come back and help strengthen the competency of the province in this field.

Boni Belen, Cebu Chamber ICT chairman, said in Singapore alone, there are about 7,000 Filipino professionals that are working in IT firms.

Also, Belen said CCC wants to use the Cebu Business Month as a platform in convincing regional heads of multinational firms to outsource some of their ICT requirements in the province.

Cebuanos want their own PSE office

CEBU CITY—Business groups are urging the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) to establish an office here to accommodate investments in the equities market.

At the sidelines of the successful PSE Cebu Stock Market Roadshow held Saturday at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, Jose T. Ng, vice president for Visayas of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said Cebuanos are eager to invest in the stock market but need ample knowledge about the business.

“So, the idea of a having a local office in Cebu is a welcome initiative,” Ng told BusinessMirror in an interview.

He said there are also several companies in Cebu, including small and medium enterprises, eyeing to raise capital via an initial public offering (IPO).

“Doing IPO is, I think, a cost-effective way to raise funds for expansion,” Ng said.

Two prominent Cebu-based companies listed at the stock exchange are holding firm Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. and the Ayala-led real-estate developer Cebu Holdings Inc.

PSE president Francis Lim described the proposal as very attractive. “I’m thinking of submitting it as part of the 2008 business plan due to the interest shown by the Cebu community,” he said.

The establishment of a local office in Cebu, Lim said, eliminates the notion that the stock market is only for Manila-based investors.

Cebu is the second largest city and fastest growing economy in the Philippines. Its export growth rate for the past five years averaged close to 20 percent, considerably higher than the rest of the country.

The province enjoys considerable success in producing goods for both national and export markets such as Japan and the US.

Also, special economic zones have been established to encourage foreign investments and exports.

u take a plane from cebu to laoag city or vigan city, i can check cebu pacific's promo rates, i had mine back and forth from manila at 1800++ only. Dagah ka pwede ivisit sa Ilocos region dili lang Vigan. A must visit is Pagudpud, a white sand beach up north as in northern most part sa country. On your way to Pagudpud, you can visit an old watch tower and the windmills.South of Laoag naman on your way to Vigan naa pud sand dunes and Paoay church(a UNESCO heritage site)Hope this helps. Im attaching some of our pics taken there 2 weeks ago.

"We are buying up to 20 additional Airbus A320s for our domestic and international operations," Cebu Pacific president Lance Gokongwei told reporters.

Gokongwei said the first ten additional aircraft will be delivered from 2010 to 2012. The remaining ten aircraft will be delivered from 2011 to 2013.

Cebu Pacific completed an earlier refleeting program which cost $670 million, with the arrival of its 14th Airbus jet last March 2. It operates 20 domestic and seven regional destinations using 10 A319s and four A320s.

The firm celebrated the completion with a promo offering a P1 one-way fare for its 20 domestic destinations and five regional destinations. The promo ran from March 2 to March 8.

Cebu Pacific's budget fares have increased its popularity among Filipino fliers. Gokongwei said the carrier has surpassed all competitors to emerge as the country's top airline in 2006, as the number of passengers it carried grew 57 percent to 3.5 million. -GMANews.TV

I didn't know that Gabriel Leyson is a good urban planner. :yes: He took part in the feasibility studies and/or implemention of the SRP, the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, a tunnel road from Carbon to Fort San Pedro, widening of roads from Talisay to Carcar, etc. And by the way, is there a planned international port for Talisay? Gabriel Leyson is being featured in BEE TV Channel 14 since he's running for Talisay City Mayor and anak pala siya of the former Cebu Governor, Jose Leyson :shocked:

FYI ... gabby leyson held the position i'm in now. he was project director of the
metro cebu development project (MCDP)-1 and MCDP-2 from 1988 to 1995. the
SRP and the SCR (south coastal road) are 2 of the 3 components of MCDP-3 and
gabby leyson was instrumental in their project preparation, together with mayor
tommy osmena.

We, FUENTE TRIANGLE REALTY -developer of Club Ultima Tower, Ultima Residences Fuente Tower, and Ultima Residences Ramos Tower will be developing 3 midrise condominiums with 10 storeys each. One of which will be located sa may Mango area. Sa may Sacred Heart School or something..basta yung daanan going through Richmond Hotel. This will cater to the middle class Cebuanos.

The ground breaking of Ultima Residences Fuente Triangle will be on March 15,2007 @ 8 AM. So to those who wanna take pix, open to the public po to....According sa meeting kanina, atleast 2 floors per month daw ang matatapos. So basically, the third tower will be delivered between 2008 and 2009.

Hey guyz, for those who don't know Paulo Dy, let me introduce you to him.
Paulo Dy is a Cebuano director and cinematographer whose major works were involved mostly in commercials and music videos. He recently joined a competition initiated by Steven Spielberg wherein the winner will get a chance to work with him on a new movie (im not sure with this though). Anyway I think this will be a beautiful building because of the cladding. I think the first few floors have been cladded already. I thought before that they would just use paint for the exteriors just like Club Ultima or Winland Towers.

Maybe dahil sa skywalk....which is located around those floors...

Anyway, Club Ultima is getting stricter. We are not allowing people to enter the premises if they are not members or part of the newly reorganized Sales Force.

Non members can still enter or check the place out but they have to register and go through various security check ups unlike before.

I do have a bad news....but followed by a good news....

hmmm..i aint sure if i have posted this here before...anyway, here it goes:

The Bad News is:

We will not be pursuing the plan to build a 30 meter drop tower / slingshot like those in Macau or other countries. Sayang, this could become another tourist destination in Cebu. However;

The Good News is:

The Crown Regency Tower will still be considered as one of the unique buildings in the country. A 30 meter tower will still be constructed but instead of the drop tower / slingshot - a viewing deck will be installed for the public.

Anyway, Fuente Triangle has just acquired a property in Boracay where we will be developing it into a first class resort with condotels. Good news for Cebuanos who are Club Ultima members. You would be able to take advantage of ur free nights and exchange in either Boracay, Cebu, Davao, or Makati.

Singaporeans to invest $400M

TWO Singaporean firms are planning to invest about US$400 million in the shipyard and shipbuilding industry in Cebu, a Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) official said yesterday.

Marina Administrator Vicente Suazo said he will facilitate the meetings between the Singaporean investors and the National Maritime Leasing Corp. (NMLC) and the Philippine Import-Export Credit Agency (Philexim).

He said the NMLC, a subsidiary of the National Development Council, and Philexim can give sovereign guarantee to assure the Singaporean investors that their investments are safe in the Philippines.

“I will facilitate meetings for these parties (sovereign guarantors and investors) to fast-track the placing of investments for shipyard, shipbuilding and ship repair that will not only provide revenues for the government but create employment,” Suazo said.

Suazo declined to name the two Singaporean firms, but said one firm will invest $300 million and the other $100 million.

He said he recently went to Singapore to conduct a campaign to attract foreign investments in the country’s shipping industry.

He said the campaign is in line with President Arroyo’s directive, as provided under Executive Order 588, to invite foreign investors to modernize the industry, and eradicate second-hand and dilapidated vessels plying various routes in the country.

He said dilapidated vessels endanger the lives of the passengers.

The shipbuilding and repair industries in Cebu are dominated by Keppel Cebu Shipyard and Engineering Works Inc., a Singaporean company, and Tsuneishi Heavy Industries, a Filipino-Japanese joint venture.

Keppel Cebu Shipyard and Engineering Works Inc. is into ship repair and shipbuilding. Last Sept. 29, 2006, it conducted keel laying for the building of two giant tug boats.

The tug boats are being constructed at Keppel in Lapu-Lapu City but will be used in Singapore.

In Balamban, Cebu, Tsuneishi Heavy Industries builds bulk carriers and cargo ships for export.

Suazo said that most shipyards in the country have been downgraded in the last 30 years because their owners lacked the capital to improve their facilities.

Earlier, Capt. Jeoffrey Solon, past president of the Visayas Association of Ferryboat and Coastwise Service Operators said that some shipping operators in the country want to buy brand new vessels to replace the old ones.

However, he said shipbuilders in Japan, Brunei and Australia are already booked for the next 10 years.

So how tall Crown Regency in meters? Will the viewing tower still be counted sa total height of the building? Will the viewing deck be set up sa top most part of the 30meter tower?

that ain't so bad :okay: more than a 100 meters + 30 more meters is freaking tall for Cebu. :rock: the Boracay development is something to look forward to! nice :cool:

Wow! CIT looks different. Proud kaayo mi nga mga Technologians kay gadala sad baya nag pride sa Cebu labi na gyud sa una. Sige gud nag ka "tops again" sa mga board exams. Ang mga hawod (boss, manager, amo, etc.) sa NSC, NPC, ug uban pang dagkong planta diri sa Iligan halos mga alumni sa CIT. :cheers:

They said that CIT is famous in Northern Part of Mindanao specially in CDO, Iligan and Surigao. That is why when several schools in Mindanao will have their educational visit in CIT, I always hear someone say (mao diay ni CIT, KABATI GUD:lol:)... I dunno about their feedback now that CIT looks modern specially their library that is now centralized airconditioned compared before that the whole campus looks so old and laidback.

We know of a person who constantly goes to the gym (Slimmers' World Ayala) and is constantly being flirted by policemen, military men and older guys. Sharing her experiences, she was able to disclose that the Ouanos of Mandaue are really corrupt officials and they are really panicking a lot for the elections now. If they don't get the seat of the city's mayorship, their alleged corruption will be exposed to the public. With this, there are rumors that Pedong Ouano will also join Jonkie and Joy Ouano in the city's mayoralty race. She even shared that the certain policeman told her that during the 2004 elections, there was a city wide blackout during the canvassing and that the ballot boxes were then switched to ensure victory for the Ouanos

Cebu property firm to expand IT park

To meet the increasing demand for commercial spaces, the Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corporation (CPVDC) is planning to expand the 1.26 hectare Asiatown IT Park to two nearby lots of 12,633 square meters.

The Cebu City Government referred for further study a request for the issuance of a clearance endorsing the expansion program of CPVDC, the owner of Asiatown IT Park.

The council referred the request to the committee on urban planning and the city zoning board for study.

Councilor Nestor Archival furnished the council on March 7 with a draft resolution seeking the issuance of a clearance for CPVDC's expansion program located in Barangay Apas.

The IT Park is home to 30 multinational companies employing at least 6,000 people as of January 2007. Their workforce is expected to increase to 10,000 by the end of the year.

“The Asiatown IT Park stands as a well-planned economic zone and modern trading hub and envisions to attract locators in the information technology services like software development, content development, hardware design, research and development services,” said Archival's resolution.

The IT Park was declared an information technology special economic zone on February 27, 2001 with the issuance of Presidential Proclamation No. 12.

Archival said CPVDC is now seeking to expand their operation to two nearby lots.

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) board issued an October 2006 pre-qualification clearance for the “annexation” or the expansion program that CPVDC wanted to embark on.

But they needed to secure a council endorsement before a Presidential Proclamation may be issued authorizing the annexation, said Archival.

“We can't be extending benefits (granted to the Asiatown IT Park) to its accessory if the accessory does not conform with the requirement imposed on the principal,” Vice Mayor Michael Rama said.

Rama said there is a need to show the council that the expansion program has complied with the requirements imposed by PEZA.

Councilor Edgardo Labella also wanted to be clarified if the council's grant of an endorsement will not contradict with their earlier stand to impose a moratorium on any developments along Governor Cuenco Ave.

While the IT Park uses Salinas Drive as its main access, it is located near Gov. Cuenco Avenue, said Labella.

“It's not that we wish to stop their expansion program but we have to put it into the proper perspective,” said Rama.

Councilors have opted to temporarily suspend any action on Archival's request while waiting for comments from the committee on urban planning and the city zoning board.
