Padung na Pardo dong! Minglanilla and it has a very long queue. Looks like KMK is having good profits during rush hours. It is slowly being patronized by the Cebuano commuters. It has extended its northern reach to Super Gaisano in Mandaue City.

I noticed a bunch of newly fenced areas in IT Park. I know the one beside Skyrise is gonna be Skyrise 2, and the one across from i2 will by the TGU Tower... what's gonna rise in the two lots between i2 and i1?

Metro Cebu currently has 10 stationary construction-cranes.

- 3 for SM Northwing Annex
- 1 for Cebu Commercial Tower
- 1 for ACT and I.T. Mall
- 1 for Citilight Gardens Phase II (Tower 3)
- 1 for Tower Palace - Cebu
- 1 for Crown Regency
- 1 for Chonghua Banilad
- 1 for Lexmark's [7-storey] Building @ CBP

This number is unprecedented in Cebu's contruction industry history.

^^ so those cranes would have been shipped into Cebu from Manila or someplace else by the construction companies right, since they are expensive.

Most of the tower cranes that are being use now are from Cebu big time or triple AAA construction companies. Like Dakay (4 T cranes), Primary (5 T cranes), Young Builders (2 T cranes), Duracon (1 T crane) and SolidCon (1 T crane).

The cranes that are being use at SM North Wing right now are from Manila. Those are the cranes that were used to build the 55 storey PB Com. SM North Wing is their first project outside luzon. They are the biggest construction company in the Philippines. They build most of the buildings in Makati. Just an FYI!

I don't have an idea if it's already fence. What I know is it will push thru. Since it was part of the Primary Venture Property so called "information towers" for their property at Asiatown IT Park. One thing for sure though, construction will commence anytime this 2007.

If it is already fence! Then, you already have an idea of what's going on inside the fence lot. Hehehe...

talking about cranes, cranes are already up at ACC's lagoon!

Yeah! Up, running and working! I saw it awhile ago.

But I'm really wondering why they fence up the lot beside Marriott and the parking area beside Cafe Laguna Garden Restaurant. Those lots are not part of the lagoon right? Plus! The lot beside Marriott and fronting Innove is very far from the lagoon, yet they fence it up. If it is for the excavated soils or for the construction company's temporary office, then why there's no such thing when they constructed the soon to finish Rustan's. Well there was a dumpsite though for the excavated soils, but it was very far from the construction site. Hmm...Ayala Center is going to surprise us I think! As you know! They're giving us a lot of choices and surprises to enjoy life!

By the way, I also passed by Toblerone/Grand Cenia site this afternoon. And? Yes! Clearing and fencing operation are on the works! It seems to me that they're going to push thru with the project as scheduled (May/June 2007).

IMO, SM's expansion is still larger since Ayala's Oasis mostly involves giving a facelift to the Lagoon Area and the side facing the lagoon, plus the construction of a buildings on the lot beside Laguna Garden, and the now finished Rustan's...but still, it beats SM's Northwing in terms of aesthetics...dont get me wrong though, coz both are very welcome developments in this city of mall lovers...

Marina opens Talisay-Mactan ferry route, invites operators
Sun-Star Online
15 April 2007

THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) will issue a permit to any interested party who will operate a shuttle ferry between Talisay City and the Mactan Economic Zone in Lapu-Lapu City, as well as Danao City and Lapu-Lapu City.

Marina 7 Director Glenn Cabanez said Republic Act 9295 liberalizes the policy on vessels’ entry into routes.

He said interested parties may apply for a certificate of public convenience (CPC) with Marina.

“Anybody can apply for CPA and can operate in any route because this industry has already been liberalized,” he said.

Marina Administrator Vicente Suazo Jr. said that once all the requirements are complete and in order, Marina will issue the CPC.

Cabanez and Suazo believe the two routes are viable compared to other routes between Cebu and other provinces.

A shuttle ferry service will also cut travel time between Talisay City and Lapu-Lapu City or from Danao City to Lapu-Lapu City by one hour, said Cebu Port Authority (CPA) General Manager Angelo Verdan.

Verdan said the CPA will issue to Talisay City Government a permit to operate the port in Barangay Tanke, which is under construction.

The P50-million project, initiated by Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district), is intended to service fishermen but with berthing spaces for roll-on-roll-off (Roro) vessels and ramps.

Gullas thinks the roro vessels can use the 167-meter long rock causeway or jetty with deck and roro ramps to ferry workers from southern Cebu to Lapu-Lapu City.

Verdan said the people of Mactan will also benefit from the shuttle ferry service if they work in southern Cebu. (EOB)

from www.cebu.gov.ph:

When Cebu was "discovered" by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, it was truly a discovery, for it opened the eyes of the world to what it did not expect to see.

We had been a bustling trading post in Asia, long before the first of his ships landed, positioned right in the middle of whatwas to become the Philippine Archiepelago.

The island, with its natural port, was a logical destination, and its people, so steeped in the ways of trade and commerce, were its greatest natural resources.

Fast-forward 436 years, and Cebu remains a discovery. It remains that one bright spot, situated right at the geographic center of the archipelago. It is the fastest growing economy in the country, with an average growth rate significantly higher than that of the entire nation, and any other province.

The Province leads 78 other provinces in gross assets, equity and total income.
Frequently been asked: WHY CEBU?

Because there is a reason why we are number one.

There is a reason why this small island leads the entire country in exports of furniture, fashion accessories, carageenan, gifts, toys, and houseware.

There is a reason why Cebu consistently gets the biggest chunk of tourist arrivals yearly, and has become the tourist gateway to Central and Southern Philippines.

There is a reason why Cebu is fast becoming the I.T. and call center capital of the country.

Why Cebu?

Perhaps because the island is naturally situated to become the center of all this action.

It is a natural port. More than 80% of inter-island shipping capacity is based here, on this small island. It is the most accessible place to and from all points in the country, with more domestic air and sea linkages than even Manila.

It is naturally safe. It does not lie within any earthquake zone or typhoon belt. There are no volcanoes on the island.

It has the necessary, well-balanced infrastructure to remain competitive, and to sustain development. And yet, within minutes from its cosmopolitan quarters, you are immediately transported to resort settings and natural wonders.

Why Cebu?

Most of all, because of its PEOPLE. An independent, self-reliant, entrepreneurial culture pervades the island, which makes its people eminently positioned to seize the opportunities that nature presented it.

We have a highly educated workforce geared towards non-agricultural lines, the reason why Cebu has become the center of global attention for services and information technology.

We are naturally peaceful. We have among the lowest crime rates, and the best peace and order records of all cities and provinces in the Philippines.

Why Cebu? The Island. Its People. We have had four centuries of being discovered by the world. And we invite you to discover today - this island, this people.

Bai, is that only the 8-storey Lexmark building or perhaps it's already both the 8 and 22 storey buildings?

The beams look so large, the building itself is massive too (it seems like there's no more space for another building if ever that's going to be the 8-storey R&D building only). Also, I've noticed a portion of the building where there's a core being constructed already..

Visayas tourist spots lure Thais

INSTEAD of viewing each other as competitors, Cebu and Phuket, Thailand can work together in luring more international tourists to the Asean region, a Thai official said.

“Cebu and Phuket are not competitors, because the market of global tourists is too big. We can help each other by developing our respective tourism industries and invite more visitors,” said Thai Ambassador to the Philippines Asha Dvitiyananda.

Phuket, like Cebu’s Mactan Island, is known for its pristine white beaches and is a popular tourist destination in Thailand.

But despite the similarities, she said tourism stakeholders in Cebu and Phuket need to extensively develop their marketing and advertising efforts and address the changing preferences of tourists.

Dvitiyananda said that through bilateral meetings, the Philippines and Thailand are working on strengthening their relationships in the areas of tourism, security, trade and energy.

“The trade relations between the two countries are growing each year,” she said.

Dvitiyananda added that electrical equipment and car spare parts are among the local products commonly exported to Thailand.

In the same manner, Thailand exports the same products to the Philippines, she added.

Meanwhile, Dvitiyananda said the growth in Central Visayas’ tourism industry makes the province a popular destination among Thais.

“My personal favorite is Bohol,” she revealed, adding that hotels and resorts in Mactan Island, are also common vacation spots of Thais.

Growth

Data from the Department of Tourism 7 said the number of tourists from Thailand who visited Cebu was up by 51.42 percent or from 1,060 in 2006 to 1,605 in the year previous.

According to Dvitiyananda, Cebu’s successful hosting of the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit also proved the province’s capacity to hold international meetings and conventions.

“The Asean summit has very well promoted Cebu,” she said.

Dvitiyananda recently visited the province to celebrate the Songkran Festival at the Krua Thai, a Thai restaurant in the Cebu.

Songkran is the Thervada Buddhists’ New Year celebration. It is held in cities, towns and villages all over Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Southwest China.

Accenture opens biggest Philippine BPO facility

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

MANILA, Philippines -- Accenture has formally opened its seventh and largest business process outsourcing (BPO) facility in the Philippines and announced plans to expand outside of Metro Manila.

Located at the Robinson's Cybergate 2 Tower in Mandaluyong City, the new facility houses around 5,000 seats. Accenture now operates a total of 10,000 seats in the country.

In the Philippines, Accenture does applications development, infrastructure or IT outsourcing, BPO and recently expanded into call center operations.

The company expects to have a total of around 15,000 employees in the country by the end of its current fiscal year in August.

Basilio Rueda, senior managing director of Accenture's Global Delivery Network, said that in the Philippines, call center operations exhibit the biggest growth in terms of employee count. In terms of revenue, application development contributes the highest at about 40 percent.

"Our BPO clients go for integrated offerings," Rueda said, noting demand for outsourced call center work abroad as existing BPO clients expand their operations worldwide.

Stephen Rohleder, Accenture's chief operating officer, added that aside from expansion, cost efficiency is also driving clients to outsource.

More specifically, he noted these two factors apply to industries such as the banking industry in Europe , driven by the deregularization of industries like telecommunications and continued expansion of multinational retail companies.

Meanwhile, Beth Lui, Accenture's Philippine managing director, said the company will open another facility this year located in Cebu City in the South, which will initially have 500 seats.

Passenger arrivals show confidence in Cebu: guv

CEBU posted an increase in the number of international passenger arrivals for the first quarter of this year, a record that Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said only shows “confidence” in Cebu despite the continued issuance of travel advisories against the island by other governments.

After a meeting with the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) board yesterday morning, Garcia told reporters that the total international passenger arrivals from January to March this year reached 112,772.

The number is 22 percent higher than the same period last year, which was 92,226.

The airport authorities surpassed its target of 97,760 passengers, recording a 15-percent increase.

Just a few days ago, the Australian Government issued an advisory for its citizens not to travel to Cebu, citing security threats.

Growing interest

“But if we read the data, we see a growing interest by international passengers who come to Cebu. There is much confidence in our peace and order or else, they would not be coming in droves in spite of the travel advisories,” said Garcia, a member of the MCIAA board.

The governor, who also heads the Regional Peace and Order Council for Central Visayas, added that this poses a challenge for local authorities to fully secure the airport.

“This is already being taken care of with the equipment we put up. We are contemplating acquiring an x-ray for all cargoes and baggage. The challenge is there, and we’re up to the challenge. The influx of tourists indicates confidence in us,” she said.

Moreover, she said the MCIAA also recorded a revenue higher than that of last year.

In January to March 2006, the MCIAA earned a total of P217,164,495 from aeronautical and non-aeronautical fees as well as “bank and cash management revenues.”

In the same period this year, the amount is 13 percent higher, at P244,850,193.

Cebu has also increased its number of international flights, from 658 to 847 this year. Their target for this year was only 691.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) 7 also reported increased arrivals and departures by Australian tourists and businessmen.

Coming back

BI 7 Director Geronimo Rosas said Australians who know that Cebu is peaceful and tourist-friendly keep on coming back. This, he said, is the reason behind their increased revenue collections.

Records show BI 7 collected P65.4 million for the first quarter this year, which is P11.7 million higher than the same period last year.

Rosas also said arrivals by Germans also increased despite the report that a German national and his wife were killed by robbers who broke into their house in Baclayon, Bohol.

Rosas said that he has already instructed Timoclites Inting, an immigration officer assigned in Tagbilaran City, to conduct an inquiry on the killing of Helmut Malinka, 65, of Hamburg, Germany and his wife, Eutiquia, 59, inside their residence in Barangay Laya, Baclayon, Bohol.

Rosas, however, clarified that the task of his office is processing travel documents and monitoring foreigners in the country to see to it that they follow the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940 and pay the correct fees. The inquiry to be conducted by Inting is for record purposes only, he said.

Earlier, Department of Tourism (DOT) Director Patria Aurora Roa said that the in the past years, tourists in Bohol are “spill over” from Cebu. At present, Bohol is now a tourist destination but foreigners have no choice but to pass Cebu where, Mactan Cebu International Airport is located.

Rosas said direct flights between Mactan and the different countries in the Asia Pacific, including Australia, are reasons why arrivals and departures of international passengers increased.

Rosas said Kalibo in Aklan will open its international airport to direct flights with Australia and Hongkong. The problem, Rosas said, is that the BI in Manila wants to get personnel from Cebu to staff the new international airport.

Undermanned

“The arrivals and departures of international passengers are increasing in Cebu and we are already undermanned. I will request my superiors to get personnel from other areas”, Rosas said.

Rosas is scheduled to meet Associate Commissioner Roy Almoro in Manila today to discuss the matter.

Almoro was named by Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales as BI officer-in-charge in the meantime that Samar Rep. Marcelino Libanan has not reported to his new job yet. Libanan replaced Alipio Fernandez, who resigned as BI commissioner last month and is running for mayor in Dagupan City, Pangasinan. (JPM/EOB)

Filinvest Land profit up 40% to P818M in ’06
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
The Philippine Star 04/18/2007

Filinvest Land Inc. (FLI), the flagship property firm of tycoon Andrew Gotianun, reported a 40-percent jump in its net profit last year to P818 million from P583 million in 2005, driven by higher real estate sales and rental income from its office and commercial center buildings.

In a financial report submitted to the Philippine Stock Exchange, FLI said gross profit rose 27 percent to P1.5 billion as its lease income from mall and office building operations surged 2,010 percent to P255 million.

Additional revenues were generated by Northgate Cyberzone, Festival Supermall, and PBCom Tower, which were acquired by FLI in September 2006. These retail and office developments will contribute fully to total revenues beginning this year.

Gross revenues reached P3.4 billion or 21 percent higher than the previous year’s P2.8 billion.

With the infusion of the commercial and office assets, FLI’s consolidated assets increased 45 percent to P40.8 billion from P28.2 billion in 2005 while stockholders’ equity expanded 62 percent to P29.2 billion.

FLI maintained a strong financial position ending the year with a cash position of P469 million and a low debt-to-equity ratio of 24 percent.

"With the very successful follow-on offering of the company in the first quarter of 2007, FLI raised P5.9 billion for the fast-track development of the targeted projects in our development pipeline," FLI president Joseph Yap said.

He said the company has set aside P16 billion year more residential and office building projects nationwide over the next three years. Of the total, P5 billion will be spent this year, P3.7 billion of which will go to residential developments and P1.3 billion for office developments.

Bullish on the prospects of the real estate sector,FLI has lined up 14 new projects this year.

Among these projects include the Sunrise Place and Westwood Mansions in Cavite – both catering to the affordable and socialized segment; and Auburn Place – Biñan, The Glens — San Pedro, Escala — Cebu and West Palms – Puerto Princesa — all targeting to the middle-income market.

FLI is also broadening its market reach with the launch of a condotel in Cebu to be called Grand Cenia. The 18-story tall bidding will have three floors for commercial and BPO offices.

FLI is also building One Oasis — a complex of nine five-story residential medium rise buildings in Pasig City.

FLI’s other projects include Kembali Coast on Samal Island, Davao — a 50-hectare Asian-Balinese beach front residential resort and residential developments; The MacArthur Villas in Tarlac and Asbery Villas and Claremont Village in Pampanga.

For its office buildings, FLI is budgeting P2 billion in the next three years for the construction of BPO buildings at Northgate Cyberzone. Five buildings are under construction with a total leasable area of 68,516 square meters, expected to be completed next year.

With the completion of these buildings, FLI will have a total gross leasable area of 166,052 square meters in its portfolio.

3 countries to send contingents
By Malou M. Mozo
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

INFORMATION and communication technology (ICT) stakeholders in the Asean region are attending the Cebu Business Month (CBM)-ICT 2007 International Conference and Exhibition this June.

Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, which were among the countries visited by the proponents of the CBM-ICT 2007 last March, have expressed their commitment by sending a “full-force” contingent, said Bonifacio Belen, CBM-ICT 2007 chairman.

“We are targeting at least 12 representatives per country,” he said.

The Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation, the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Singapore and several Philippine ICT players with partners in Singapore have agreed to work closely together in encouraging up to a dozen Singapore ICT firms to participate, Belen also said.

During the trip to Malaysia, CBM organizers also met with the major ICT organizations, including the Malaysian External Trade Development Corp., Multimedia Development Corp. and the Association of Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia.

The Malaysians were one in saying that they will be in Cebu in June this year, Belen told Sun.Star Cebu.

He also got together with the ICT department of the University of Malaya (UM) in discussing “embedding” the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) model.

The UM dean and faculty, he said, lauded Cedf-it’s model that centered on the collaboration efforts of the private sector and the academe in providing quality and quantity human resource professionals in view of the shared vision of transforming Cebu into an ICT hub in Asia.

“They were really impressed. It shows that Cebu’s IT industry, in particular, is quite ahead,” Belen said, who is also Cedf-it’s executive director.

Tapped

In Thailand, the same show of support for the CBM-ICT 2007 was displayed by the Thai IT stakeholders during their two-day visit to Bangkok.

The road show in Bangkok was arranged by the Association of Thai Software Industry, and the Software Industry Promotion Agency of Thailand’s Ministry of ICT, among others.

Belen and other CBM organizers are set to visit Vietnam and Hong Kong this month and Taiwan and South Korea in mid-May.

Contacts in Beijing, Hainan, India and Japan are already being tapped to help in bringing delegates and exhibitors to the event, he added.

Earlier, Belen said the proposed integration of Asian IT leaders will be the main focus of the Cebu ICT 2007 International Conference and Exhibition on June 26 to 28.

“The pioneering landmark for the Cebu ICT 2007 Congress will be the ICT collaboration in Asia, where Cebu will take the lead,” he said.

Belen said because of the “vastness” of the global IT market, Asian countries need to complement each other’s strengths to become globally competitive, and thus, increase its command to as much as 30 percent in the global ICT requirement.

The conference is targeting approximately 600 local and regional delegates, and up to 5,000 IT businessmen and professionals are projected to visit the exhibitions.

Mall ‘boom’ spurs innovateness, new ideas in business sector (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2007/04/20/bus/mall.boom.spurs.innovateness.new.ideas.in.business.sector.html)

THE sprouting of more shopping malls in Cebu will encourage new, “crazy” ideas and spur innovativeness, a group of local retailers said.

“Although it’s not spoken enough, malls are new incubation venues for budding entrepreneurs,” said Toys@Work owner Chris Tio.

Melanie Ng, who owns Premium Concepts, and Jay Aldeguer, executive vice-president of the Aldeguer group of companies, echoed Tio’s observation, adding that the new generation of retailers in the areas of information technology, apparels and fashion accessories, among others, have become more creative and playful, either in product design or in marketing strategies.

Tio attributed the “young and fresh” entrepreneurial concepts of retailers for Cebu’s booming business climate, which is characterized by the expansion of companies in the hotel, food, IT and real estates sector and the rise of new buildings in key areas around the city.

Aldeguer observed that a boom in the local economy has led to the increase in the purchasing power of many Cebuanos.

Dynamic

He said the local retail industry has grown to become more dynamic as more Cebuanos now have a high disposable income.
“Retail consumers are itching to buy,” added Tio.

Ng, for her part, said consumers have now become “wiser” in their buying preferences, choosing only items that are affordable and of good quality.

While the retail business has become more and more competitive with the entry of more players, Aldeguer said this is an opportunity “to test what Cebuano retailers are made of.”

Together with other stakeholders, like mall operators, he is optimistic the local retail environment will be promising in the next five years.

Aside from the construction of new malls, the major mall operators in Cebu City are renovating and expanding their facilities.

Expansion

Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) is currently constructing a 2,000-square-meter three-story building adjacent to Ayala Center Cebu on the lot that had once been the mall’s public utility jeepney terminal.

Cebu Holdings Inc., ALI’s affiliate company, also had the two-hectare lagoon area renovated

Meanwhile, SM Prime Holdings Inc. is constructing the SM City Cebu Northwing, which is a five-level annex to its existing 13.8-hectare property at the North Reclamation Area.

The Northwing, which is designed for the upper class market, will house upscale shops, specialty shops, comfort lounge, concierge, entertainment area and restaurants—including al fresco dining establishments.

Hotter weather seen in the coming weeks (http://philstar.com/philstar/FREEMAN200704201803.htm)

The Freeman 04/20/2007

The public should expect hotter weather and warmer temperatures in the coming weeks, as the dry season is peaking toward May, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

PAG-ASA Mactan chief Oscar Tabada said the temperature will continue to rise in the coming days, advising the public to consume plenty of liquid, avoid staying under the sun for long hours, and wear light clothing to avoid heat stroke.

"It will be hotter in the coming days for the month of May is the hottest month of the year,'' he said.

Yesterday, the temperature hovered from 33.4 degrees Celsius at 1:45 p.m., almost leveling the 34.2 degrees Celsius that the weather bureau recorded last year.

The hottest temperatures of 38.6 degrees centigrade and 38.5 degrees centigrade were recorded in 1915 and 1987, respectively.

Tabada said the hottest day ever recorded in Cebu was on May 30, 1979 when the temperature reached 36.4 degrees Celsius, followed by the one on May 26, 2002 that reached 35.6 degrees Celsius.

"For the entire month of May, people are advised to go to shady places or apply a sun-block lotion to avoid skin diseases," Tabada said.

The Department of Health, on the other hand, has cautioned the public not to be exposed to the sun for longer period to avoid the risk of getting any of the common ailments during summer.

DOH regional director Susana Madarietta said the most common diseases during summer are sore eyes, heatstroke, diarrhea, typhoid fever and Hepatitis B.

Madarietta advised proper preparations of food, which should be eaten while still hot otherwise it should be refrigerated and reheated before consumption. She also urged the public to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Defensor supports anti-Sugbuak pact (http://philstar.com/philstar/FREEMAN200704201807.htm)

The Freeman 04/20/2007

Team Unity senatorial candidate Michael "Tol Mike" Defensor is making a stand on one of Cebu's controversial issue, the Sugbuak or the proposed bill dividing Cebu into four provinces.

"Personally, I am not in favor at all in dividing Cebu. Kasi may sentimental value na ang Cebu. Cebu has been established long before the Republic of the Philippines was established," Defensor, who was in Cebu yesterday for his campaign sorties, said.

Defensor added that Cebu is already known even before the Spanish time and has long already been in the pages of history.

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña have initiated the signing of a manifesto opposing the split-Cebu bills as a condition for supporting senatorial bets in the polls.

Garcia had already called on all Cebuanos "to stand up and fight for our unity and for Cebu" as she vowed "to fight them every step of the way, with every ounce and fiber of my being, and with the total force of my faith in and passion for Cebu and the Cebuanos."

Furthermore, Defensor said that if he wins in the coming May polls, he will make Cebu and Iloilo as his priority, as what he has done for these provinces were highly appreciated.

When asked on why the Cebuanos should vote for him, Defensor answered, "I have the track record in governance and leadership and I am hardworking. I will continue to promote Cebu especially its tourism industry."

Defensor was elected councilor of Quezon City in 1992, the youngest member of that body. He was reelected in 1992. He was then elected congressman of the third district of Quezon City in 1995, making him the youngest member of the House of Representatives. He won reelection in 1998.

He was named one of the Top 10 Legislators, New Millennium's Most Outstanding Solons and Most Consistent Outstanding Congressman for three consecutive years by the Gladiators Magazine and Congress Watch Magazine. Reelected in 1998, Defensor was voted by his partymates as assistant minority floor leader of the Eleventh Congress.

Following President Arroyo's assumption to the presidency, Defensor was named presidential adviser on housing and chair of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council.

He was awarded Most Outstanding Cabinet Secretary by the Gawad Paglilingkod Metro Manila Radio Reporters Organization in 2002 in recognition of his performance as chairman of the HUDCC.

In 1999, he was cited by Asiaweek as one of Asia's Political Leaders of the New Millennium.

Local meat processors to venture into exports (http://philstar.com/philstar/FREEMAN200704202003.htm)
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 04/20/2007

The weakening business for processed meat products in the Philippines, has led some members of the Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc., (PAMPI) to explore the export market to stay in operation.

PAMPI president Felix Tiukinhoy Jr. said that the majority of the 32 members of PAMPI want to explore other markets, aside from the Philippines saying "the export market now is our new target."

Because of the difficult business situation for the processed meat product in the Philippines, amid the choking competition and the entry of cheaper imported goods, three meat processing companies have already closed shop last year, Tiukinhoy said.

PAMPI is one of the organizers of the first World Food Exposition currently being held at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), which was opened last April 18 and will culminate on April 21.

"We have to improve the awareness of the public to patronize our own manufactured food products. Also, meat processing companies should invest on technology to improve efficiency," said Tiukinhoy, who is also the president of Virginia Foods Inc.

According to Tiukinhoy, the weakening purchasing power of majority of the Filipinos would be a "survival of the fittest" for the meat processing industry.

"Small processors can't sustain the high cost of production, and yet stagnant and even declining profit margin," he said.

In Cebu there are about five meat processors, these are Virginia Foods, Sun Pride, Kings Quality Foods, Lami Foods Inc., and Golden Ribbon-the maker of Fiesta brand.

He said unless meat processors won't invest on improved machinery and manufacturing technology, there is no way that they can stay in the business.

Exploring export market is seen to save the surviving meat processors in the Philippines. Although, entering the export market could mean more capitalization or investments for the company.

Since, PAMPI members will be exporting foods, stricter rules in each country are expected thus the group is also planning to seek help from the government on this venture.

"We will try to push the [Philippine] government to be accredited with our target countries, like US, Europe, Middle East, Japan, and China," he stressed.

Although, the export venture of the meat processors would be another gamble for its business, Tiukinhoy said there are no other options but to tap other markets rather than focus on the Philippines.

Aside from country accreditation, there are several requirements a food company should comply first, before it could enter a particular country.

In the Middle East for instance, food products for import to the Middle East should all be "Halal" food. Other rules are required in other countries such as Japan, and Europe.

Despite these problems coupled with strengthening peso value, meat processors are determined to pursue the export trade.

Loalde to open outlets in Malaysia, Singapore (http://philstar.com/philstar/freeman200704202001.htm)
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 04/20/2007

Homegrown brand Loalde goes international in the next few months as it opens outlets in Malaysia and Singapore.

Aldeguer Group of Company (AGC) president Jay P. Aldeguer, however said the company is still negotiating with its potential partners in these countries and most probably the deal would be a franchise operation.

The provider of apparel products for sophisticated market, Loalde has two boutiques in Cebu, one in Makati, two in Bacolod and Iloilo, as well as Davao City, and one in Cagayan de Oro City.

Loalde, is one of the long-standing Cebuano-owned apparel brand for men and women in the Philippines. AGC is also the mother company of other apparel brands such as Islands Souvenirs, USA Sports, Bisaya Ispisyal, among others.

Aldeguer also mentioned that Loalde is also planning to open more shops in Metro Manila, aside from its plan to venture into the overseas market.

Just like its sister company, Island Souvenirs, which has outlets in other countries like USA, Saipan, among others, Loalde is also starting to open its doors to international market.

Capturing the growing market for sophisticated apparel fashion not only in the highly-urbanized areas such as Metro Manila and Cebu, Loalde has been able to penetrate other cities in the Philippines, such as Iloilo City, Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City.

Recently, the company opened its 10th outlet in Bacolod City at the SM Supermall.

With the success of the Loalde brand in the Philippines, there is no reason why it can't be successful in other Asian countries, Aldeguer said.

Aldeguer said the increasing purchasing power of Filipinos brought about by the robust investments in BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) as well as other employment and entrepreneurial opportunities have paved the way for more dynamic retail industry, including the branded RTW (Ready-To-Wear) products.

Specifically, he said the Cebuanos buying preference has now improved. The market has become more sophisticated, thus, despite the existence of cheap products, sales of branded or original items in different retail establishments are still doing very well.

Here's what I learned from a late 60s map of Cebu at the Cathedral:

- There were plans to build a new "City Hall" at the North Reclamation Area, specifically at the city owned lot that was sold to Robinsons;

- The present site of SM City Cebu was originally envisioned as a "shopping center with a bus terminal;"

- The original blueprint for the South Reclamation Area was much bigger and had much more intricate grid-like roads that would be connected to the existing ones in the port area (Quezon Blvd.), dowtown, Mambaling, Ermita, etc.;

- The Cebu International Port area was named "FREEPORT." I'm not sure though if it was really a freeport similar to Subic.

Here's what I learned from a late 60s map of Cebu at the Cathedral:

- There were plans to build a new "City Hall" at the North Reclamation Area, specifically at the city owned lot that was sold to Robinsons;

- The present site of SM City Cebu was originally envisioned as a "shopping center with a bus terminal;"

- The original blueprint for the South Reclamation Area was much bigger and had much more intricate grid-like roads that would be connected to the existing ones in the port area (Quezon Blvd.), dowtown, Mambaling, Ermita, etc.;

- The Cebu International Port area was named "FREEPORT." I'm not sure though if it was really a freeport similar to Subic.

.:.

Cool, thanks for the information. :okay:

Let me just ask this question, where is the boundary of the reclaimed area of NRA? Kasi, I have seen an old photo of the area where SM City Cebu currently stands and the road infront of it was the shoreline. I could have been wrong though. :)

Lucio Tan’s Eton to put up high-end township in Laguna
By Elizabeth Sanchez-Lacson
Inquirer
Last updated 06:48am (Mla time) 04/20/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Eton Properties Philippines Inc., the recently launched real estate vehicle of tobacco tycoon Lucio Tan, is embarking on its most ambitious township project outside Manila, the “Eton Mega City,” on a 1,000-hectare property of the Tan group in Santa Elena town in the province of Laguna, company president Danilo Ignacio said.

The project, expected to start next year, will have residential, commercial and leisure components, a four-star hotel, and a school, Ignacio said.

The Tan group owns Manila-based the University of the East.

Ignacio declined to say how much the project would cost and the expected revenues, pending completion of a market study.

Eton will also start next year a 34-hectare beach resort project on Mactan Island in Cebu City, Ignacio said. The project includes a five-star hotel, a condominium-hotel, residential condominiums and luxury villas, he said.

Stockholders of the Tan group’s publicly listed Balabac Resources and Holdings Co. Inc. on Wednesday approved Wednesday a change in name and business purpose to Eton Properties Philippines Inc.

Eton earlier said it would spend P10 billion on residential, office and leisure projects in less than five years, aiming to become one of the top five property companies in the country. With INQUIRER.net

so this is Lucio Tan's redevelopment of Coral Reef Village and Resort? i thought they'd open within the year but adding a 5-star hotel and condotels within the resort is worth the wait :okay: geez, condos by the beach is the trend nowadays here. nice!

OT: i'm in cebu right now. landed earlier this morning. didn't expect to be back here this soon. i need to visit my grandpa who's currently in critical condition. so i'd greatly appreciate if you can include in your prayers my grand daddy's successful operation. :) thanks

Marco Polo wants to reclaim title as wedding destination in Cebu

AS the wedding month draws near, an international hotel chain in Cebu revealed its plans to reclaim the title of being “the wedding destination in Cebu.”

Carlo Borromeo, Marco Polo Plaza public relations manager, said apart from being a corporate hotel, they want to position the facility as a destination for garden weddings—a distinction formerly enjoyed by Cebu Plaza Hotel.

“We want to be a place where memories are to be made,” said Borromeo.

Market

Since Marco Polo is not a year-old in the local hotel industry, he said it understands why it has not yet captured a good market for weddings.

“We average one to three weddings a month,” he said.

The reopening of the hotel last year was welcomed by local tourism stakeholders since it had been a landmark, the site of many wedding receptions, corporate affairs and banquets in its over two-decade-long run.

Collateral

Cebu Plaza Hotel closed in 2003 after its owner, Pathfinder Holdings Philippines Inc. (PHPI), turned it over to Metrobank in payment of PHPI’s P900-million debt. PHPI had used Cebu Plaza Hotel as collateral for its loan.

Destination

According to Borromeo, the hotel will soon become a one-stop wedding destination.

To entice couples to consider holding their matrimonial rites and reception in the hotel, Marco Polo has arranged a two-day Bridal Fair and Fashion Show on May 19 and 20.

“We want the event to be a place where people make the right choices for their weddings. They will be here not as sales people but wedding advisers,” Borromeo said.

Partners

The event dubbed “Weddings at the Marco Polo Plaza” will bring together local designers, stylists, florists, photographers and jewelers, as well as makers of giveaways and invitation cards.

Marco Polo has partnered with the Fashion Council of Cebu composed of leading couturiers like Philip Rodriguez, Felix Yu, Arcy Gayatin, Ditas Rodriguez, Oj Hofer, Jun Escario, Albert Arriba, Minnie Yuvienco and Rey Santos. (MMM)

PACQUIAO TO INAUGURATE RWS GYM!

By Salven L. Lagumbay
PhilBoxing.com
Sat, 21 Apr 2007

A new, state-of-the-art and ultra-modern RWS Boxing Gym is set to be launched in Cebu soon by mega-promoter Rex `Wakee` Salud, one of the country`s most influential promoters.

RWS chief trainer Juanito Ablaca, in an exclusive interview in Japan today, said that Ruben Salud, a brother of Wakee, was instrumental in the architectural design of the gym, with Ablaca acting as consultant for the over-all design.

`This is going to be a gym that anybody can truly be proud of. This is where Wakee Salud`s fighters will be training soon. A gym owner`s dream gym, complete with amenities and air-conditioned offices` Ablaca stated.

According to the veteran trainer, no less than the iconic Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao will inaugurate the gym, possibly after the elections.

Earlier, Salud stated that this dream gym is a labor of love for the sport, and that he did not mind spending a king`s ransom to make this dream a reality.

And if we are talking about the case of Julia Campbell, why those 3 retireable workmates question the safety of Cebu that the crime scene is at Batag, Banaue which is wayyyy far from Cebu (in fact it is another island)?

Loalde to open outlets in Malaysia, Singapore
By Ehda M.

Ship marks RP’s entry into select group
By Tina Arceo-Dumlao
Inquirer
Last updated 08:37am (Mla time) 04/22/2007

BALAMBAN, CEBU—WITH Rod Stewart’s “Sailing” blaring in the background, pure car and truck carrier Höegh Brasilia left the port here of Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu) Inc. late last month to make its long journey to Japan and then to Europe.

Officials from THI, Höegh Brasilia owner Kambara Kisen Co. of Japan, the Aboitiz group and the local government of Balamban waved little white flags and cheered on the Filipino crew who left with the biggest ship the Philippines has ever built.

Höegh Brasilia’s completion marks the entry of the Philippines into the select group of countries producing pure car and truck carriers, which are like floating car parks used to transport thousands of vehicles around the world.

Korea, Japan, China and Croatia were the only countries building PCTCs before the over 4,000 workers at THI worked together to build Höegh Brasilia, which is 13-story tall, seven football fields across and can carry 4,300 cars.

THICI director Roberto E. Aboitiz tells the Inquirer he expects more companies to place their orders for ships made by the Cebuanos here because of their proven workmanship and productivity.

“Our value proposition has always been the productivity of the Filipino worker,” Aboitiz says, “foreign companies bring in the design and the technology, but at the end of the day, it is the Cebuanos, the Filipinos who work on them and their work matches up with the best in the world.”

The P1.5-billion Höegh Brasilia will be chartered by Norway’s Höegh Autoliners, which plans to use the ship to transport second-hand cars from Japan and Korea to the markets in Europe, the United States and Latin America.

About three of its decks can also be adjusted to carry “high and heavy” cargo, such as bulldozers, construction equipment and even smaller ships, such as yachts.

Höegh Brasilia’s twin—Höegh Sydney—was also launched to the cheers of THI workers and their families last March 26, and will undergo some finishing work for about four months before it, too, sails for Japan and Europe.

Petter Henriksen of NorthEast Consulting Co., who supervised the ship’s construction, tells the Inquirer the completion of the Höegh PCTCs was yet another proof of the quality and professionalism of the THI workers, considering that it was the first time for them to work on PCTC engineering plans.

“Only a few shipyards around the world produce PCTCs because of the highly intricate design. They are much more difficult to build than the o rdinary bulk carriers,” Henriksen says, “the fact that the workers here were able to build one proves the quality of their work.”

It takes a little over a year to build a PCTC. Work on Höegh Brasilia, for instance, started in January last year with the steel cutting and was launched to sea in November for the final touches.

“The workers did a very good job here,” Henriksen added, “there have been challenges but not more than you would expect, especially since it is the first time for the shipyard to build such a ship.”

There are at least three more PCTCs that THI has committed to build over the next few years.

These PCTCs were the latest in the long line of ships that have been built by THI, a joint venture between Tsuneishi Holdings Corp. and Aboitiz and Co., since its first bulk carrier—the 28,000 dwt Sea Amelita, named after former First Lady Amelita Ramos—left port in 1995.

THI currently produces bulk carriers—which carry grain, ore, aluminum and fertilizers —as big as 58,000 deadweight tons every 45 days.

Because of the huge demand for ships overseas following increased trade to and from China, THI has committed to invest $100 million in the expansion of its shipyard here, about 60 km west of Cebu City.

The expansion, the third in the company’s 12-year history, would enable THICI to build bulk carriers as big as 170,000 dwt and almost double its production capacity from 14 ships a year to 24.

Ships at 170,000 dwt can travel long distances and are almost the same size as crude carriers.

Expansion work has begun and THI expects to start building on the bigger bulk carriers by 2010.

Cebu Asean tourism congress slated in June
Posted April 13th, 2007 by Tarique

The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry Cebu (CCCI) has slated the Cebu ASEAN Tourism Congress on June 14-15 during the celebration of Cebu Business Month Tourism 2007.

The congress, with the theme “Tour Cebu, Gateway to Asia,” will be held at the P515-million Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.

This is the third in the series of confabs of local, national and international tourism players aimed at positioning Cebu and Asia in the global market through effective branding and marketing.

CCCI tourism chair Mila C. Espina said the coordination between the province of Cebu and Team Asia paved the way to making the event a reality.

The EATOF (East Asia Tourism forum) will participate in the assembly alongside tourism-based participants, academe, entrepreneurs, NGO’s and the local government.

Event sponsors include the Cebu Visitors Convention Bureau, Cebu Pacific, Casino Filipino-Cebu (Pagcor), Cathay Pacific, Continental Airlines, and the Northwest Airlines.

The Chinese dish, which is also drawing customers in Talamban, P. del Rosario, Fuente Osmeña and even in the cities of Mandaue and Talisay, started with Quillosa of Barangay Tisa, Cebu City.
When the business picked up in 2001, he left his job as a machine operator in a local company.

But he said he only has one other branch near the Tabunok overpass which he just started last February.

Why does President Arroyo love going to Cebu?
by Bobit S. Avila

Last Saturday morning, I drove to the West Cebu Industrial Park in Buanoy, Balamban to the Tsuneishi Heavy Industries, (Cebu) Inc. for the formal blessing of the shipyard's P2 Billion second slipway by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

I've been to this facility many times through the transcentral Highway which cuts across the middle of Cebu Island, and every time I get inside the Tsuneishi shipyard, it always feels like you're not in the Philippines. Come to think of it, it's the same eerie feeling when you enter the Shangri La's Mactan Island Resort or Plantation Bay. That's because a factory this big is so spotlessly clean, it must be located in a foreign country.

If you're wondering why President Arroyo loves to go to Cebu, I reckon it is because here, she's acknowledged as the President, while in Manila, the opposition does not even recognize her presidency, believeing that FPJ --dead or alive -- should have been the President and worse of all, they're making all sorts of plans to derail her administration or even cut short her term.

But Cebu, we've thrown out ugly politics and have gone full speed ahead to progress. Well, I guess this is also one of the reasons why President Arroyo loves to go to Cebu because many private and government projects (including her projects) have borne fruit and there's nothing that makes one prouder than a success story.

No doubt, one of these outstanding success stories is the Tsuneishi shipyard which is celebrating its 10th year of operation in Cebu. It was in September 1994 when Tsuenishi Industries began operating in Balamban, convinced by its partner, the ABoitiz Corp, that transferring some of its production to the province would be of mutual benefit to the two companies. On Jan. 28, 1997, Tsuneishi first launched the 23,000 DWT bulk carrier Sea Amelita.

Ten years and 46 vessels later, the Greece-bound Gecon 1 bulk carrier was launched two weeks ago. Today, Tsuneishi's annual production output is seven vessels; with the opening of the new slipway, which can take vessels close to a hundred DWT, it just doubled its capacity.

After the short ceremony, President Arroyo approached the group and she told me, "I'm very proud of this facility here in Cebu" and I pointed to her the recently launched vessel Gecon 1 which was headed for Greece, the seafaring nation in ancient times where Helen of Troy's face launched a thousand ships. And now, Greece buys those ships from Cebu. That made her prouder and yes, another Cebu-made bulk carrier is bound for Portugal where Ferdinand Magellan hailed from.

It was learned from Kenji Kawano that the quality of the Balamban made Tsuneishi ships is just as good as that of Japanese made vessels. The better news came from Jon aboitiz who reported that with the new slipway, the 3,000 workers employed by Tsuneishi will rise to 5,000. Indeed the partnership of Aboitiz and Tsuneishi has been good for Cebu and the Philippine economy. Incidentally, after Hyundai, Daewoo, Samsung, universal and Imabari, Tsuneishi has the sixth largest shipyard in the world and it aims to be among the top three.

Life-Styled : Cebuanos' acute sense of home
Posted 05:46pm (Mla time) Jan 27, 2005
By Thelma Sioson San Juan
Inquirer News Service

CEBU was still flushed from the massive success of Sinulog when we settled down in the vast ballroom of Waterfront Hotel for cocktails.

Margot Osmena, the indefatigable woman also known as the mayor's wife, was talking about the attendance of millions to Cebu's annual lure and how a hardly known city in Mindanao, Tangub, won the best performance. The other women chirped in that indeed, this must have been the best Sinulog, if it's fair at all to pick a best year.

Listening to Cebuanos, you realize how they're different from the rest of the country-they're unabashedly proud to be Cebuanos. While other Filipinos have been into self-bashing for so long now it seems chronic, the Cebuanos have that old-fashioned, even giddy, sense of pride in their hometown, whether it be their resorts, furniture makers or lechon.

It rubs off on you; the likes of Waterfront general manager Marco Protacio already feels like he's a Cebuano.

Its malls are so here and now, yet there's something about Cebu that remains quaint and Old World. People still know each other, and run into each other event after event. The community remains that cozy and close-knit.

Metro Society writer Maricris Encarnacion, who's been based in Cebu since she got married in the mid-'90s, hilariously declared over dinner, "It's harder for men to fool around here because you'll be found out in less than two hours. News travels that fast." What was more amusing was that the men at our table agreed.

Indeed Cebuanos are cocooned in Cebu, even as they're quick to shop or do business in Metro Manila or elsewhere. They have this acute sense of home.

"Perhaps it's because we were left out during the Marcos years," Cebu high society doyenne Teresing Mendezona said, trying to explain why Cebuanos are self-sustaining, why they stick together and are proud of their roots and resources.
