yesterday was a mess... because of the rain... and again... the road in front of USC-TC became a vast waist(i guess) level pool of flood waters... ive witnessed it for the nth time... since i was in 1st year... now im almost graduating in my 5 year course... the pool is still there... when it rains hard... i wonder what those foreigners were thinking when i saw them walking there...

Godspeed to our infrastructure leaders... your doing the right job...

Ikaduha na ni nga hinay pa sa prosesyon ang dagan sa mga sakyanan patubang Talamban. Naa mi ka-officemate nga foreigner before, gikan to sya Denmark, "cool" daw ang instant sapa sa may Doña Rita. Hala salom, cool man kaha.

perhaps if the Philippines would become a federal country, and Cebu would then be allowed to make its own regulations regarding the acquisition of a driver's license that are more stringent than what we have right now.

unpresentable or unkempt instead of 'ugly'

inexperienced or untrained instead of 'dumb'

what would u feel if someone said the same thing about you?

and oh, it wasn't sarcasm, because it wasn't said with an ironic sense, unless of course you think the truth is the exact opposite of what i said.

New CH building to feature state-of-the art sound system (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2007/09/14/news/new.ch.building.to.feature.state.of.the.art.sound.system.html)

WITHOUT having to go to City Hall on Wednesdays, Cebu City residents can watch their councilors deliberate on ordinances and resolutions and even raise questions and complaints to the officials while the session is ongoing.

Voting on certain measures, recording their proceedings and attending the sessions can also be more convenient for the councilors who are planning to buy a P4-million digital congress sound and video system for their new session hall.

The equipment is digital and has teleconferencing and videoconferencing features.

With some cables and other accessories, the session can be hooked up to the telephone, Internet and cable television, allowing even those who are not inside the session hall to participate.

Microphone

Even a councilor who might be in a hospital may not have an excuse to miss the session.

Each councilor will be provided a portable or flush mount microphone that will be equipped with voting, agenda handling and messaging features. Rama’s unit will come with an LCD monitor.

By just pressing a button from their individual microphone sets, the councilors can vote “yes” or “no” to a measure, rank choices of equipment purchases from one to five or choose option A or B.

Non-English speakers will also not have problems watching the session, as the equipment will be able to simultaneously translate the proceedings to up to 32 languages.

For Vice Mayor Michael Rama, the Digital Congress Network Sound and Video System equipment is just what the City Council needs.

“We are a highly urbanized city and in the newly renovated session hall, we need a sound system that is sophisticated, long-lasting and one that is globally competitive and attuned,” he told the councilors during their session last Wednesday.

Specifications

Even before the purchase can be bid out by the bids and awards committee, the council invited four possible suppliers of the equipment to brief them on the features and specifications of their respective brands.

Datavox, Microdata Systems and Management Inc., Yupangco and Cebu Appliance Center are interested to supply the sound and video system.

Three suppliers enumerated the special features and specifications of the system, warranty and post-delivery services but were not allowed to disclose the cost of their product while the bidding process has not started yet.

The suppliers are proposing to supply brands from Germany, Netherlands and Denmark that will be covered by a lifetime
warranty for services. The warranty for the parts varies per supplier.

Transparency

Datavox even assured it will send a technical person to the sessions every Wednesday to make sure there are no problems, as they have been doing for the past 11 years. Datavox also supplied the existing sound system that the council is using.

The council invited the suppliers to promote transparency in the purchase of the equipment.

“We have learned our lesson from the controversies that hounded the lampposts and spy camera purchases. We want to make sure there will be no malicious insinuations later on after we buy the equipment,” Councilor Edgardo Labella said during the session. (LCR)

Alliance Global to go into tourism
By Elizabeth Sanchez-Lacson
Inquirer
Last updated 09:20pm (Mla time) 09/16/2007

ALLIANCE Global Group Inc., the holding firm of property magnate Andrew Tan, is venturing into the high-growth tourism business.

AGGI president Kingson Sian said the company expected the tourism sector, which still has a few players in the local scene, to contribute 20-25 percent to overall revenues over the next three to four years.

Today, about 40 percent of the group's revenues come from its property business through Megaworld Corp., where AGGI holds a 46-percent stake.

As it enters the tourism sector, this and its other businesses in fast food and brandy manufacturing are seen to contribute more to AGGI's total revenues in the future, thus reducing Megaworld's contribution to about 30-35 percent.

Sian said AGGI was still studying possible locations for tourism projects although he said that the Tan group owns a 15-hectare property in Mactan, Cebu, which may be developed partly for a tourism project.

The company envisions its tourism ventures to be of the same scale as that of Sentosa Island in Singapore, depending on the capital it may allot for these prospective projects.

With the increasing spending power of the Filipino middle-class, priorities have increased from just buying a house and buying a car to traveling.

Megaworld is also closing a deal with the government for the purchase of the 54.5-hectare old Iloilo airport in Mandurriao, Iloilo City, for P1.2 billion in cash.

Sian, however, did not comment on whether this will be part of AGGI's tourism prospects.

Megaworld had said that upon acceptance of its offer and the closing of the deal, the company would apply with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) for a special economic zone license for a project that aims to transform the old Iloilo airport into a new business district.

Megaworld envisions its project to lure major business process outsourcing (BPO) companies interested to set up shop in the Visayas region.

In addition to office buildings for the BPO industry, the project will host educational facilities geared to provide value-added training to equip prospective employees with the necessary skills suited to the requirements of the call centers and other BPO businesses that will be based in the Megaworld project.

I agree with you, but sad to say this isn't usually the case. Traffic personnel are inconsistent in implementing traffic rules, wayward motorists have a penchant for violating it, and feckless pedestrians is an aggravating factor of the problem.

In fact, the city strongly resembles Kingston, Jamaica.

Negros Occidental developer allots P250M for Cebu venture
By Ehda M. Dagooc
Monday, September 17, 2007

Lured by the bullish prospects the Cebu real estate industry can offer, a Negros Occidental based developer considers pouring in a total of P250 million investments on subdivision projects here.

Hernan Lopez-owned HDL Construction and Development Corporation, which is one of the largest residential developers in Negros Occidental, has mapped out a multimillion project for Cebu in the next two years.

HDL general manager Kenneth G. Tirthdas said Cebu’s real estate sector is very promising and it offers a lot of opportunities especially for the residential segment. For now, the company focuses on two residential projects which will be located in Mactan Island and in Talisay City.

Initially, HDL has partnered with Cebuano businessman and lot owner Ricardo Cabusas on the 5.2 hectare Pueblo San Ricardo subdivision in Talisay City.

Since the company’s establishment in 1995 as one of the subsidiaries of Carmela Valley Corporation, HDL built a total of 65 high-end to middle end subdivisions mostly located in Negros Occidental particularly in Bacolod, Iloilo City and other areas in Panay and Roxas City.

Now, the company is spreading its wings in Cebu, taking advantage of Cebu’s robust economy.

Although, HDL’s expertise is into subdivision developments, he said the company will also go into the condominium developments in Cebu.

“The land areas in Cebu are very limited. What works here are the high-rise residential units like condominiums. There is also tremendous growth of urban-settlers in Cebu that are already adapting the condominium living lifestyle,” he added.

As part of its long-term plan, HDL will not only develop residential projects in Cebu, but may also enter into commercial development, like call center building projects, among others, he added.

found this interesting band named after CEBU...

About Cebu (the band)...
In 1995, a group of actors from New York were cast in a film to be shot in the Philippines. Spending two months filming in and around the island of Cebu, many of these actors became friends for life. Upon their return to New York two of these actors, Mike Boland and Gus Scharr, began writing songs together.

Italian group plans to develop island resort for P5B
By Elisa P. Osorio
Tuesday, September 18, 2007

An Italian company plans to invest up to P5 billion in the country for the development of an island resort with historical value, a top business leader said yesterday.

“The Italian group will put in P5 billion for a beach resort,” Samie Lim, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) told reporters in an interview.

Lim said, the Italian company is considering to offer added value to the resort venture, hence the preference for islands with historical value.

“They have already visited the country and they are very interested in our beaches,” Lim said.

“The Italians do not want to invest in Boracay anymore. They said it is too expensive and too commercial already,” he added.

Although Lim refused to name the company until the deal has been finalized, he said this is the first time the company will invest in the Philippines.

He said the Italian group has already visited other Asian countries but has decided to invest here.

A possible location, Lim said, is Corregidor, also known as “The Rock.” The Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) described Corregidor as a tiny, island-fortress that is guarding the entrance to Manila Bay. It gained worldwide fame in the last war for the gallant stand put up by the besieged US-Philippine forces against the Japanese army.

In 1942, a combined force of Filipino and American troops made their last stand in Bataan and Corregidor against the Japanese. Many monuments of the Second World War still remain in these two places, which were proclaimed National Shrines.

Another possible location is Palo in Leyte, where Gen. Douglas MacArthur landed when he returned to the Philippines to lead the fight against the Japanese in 1944.

Mactan Island in Cebu is likewise a historical spot which can be considered since this is where Ferdinand Magellan landed when he discovered the Philippines in 1524.

City Mall pioneers IT shopping center (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=1&sec=71&op=40&om=57)

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

After pertinent documents has been complied with and the Asian College of Technology has been opened this semester, City Mall— the three level commercial building that is part of the ACT Tower is eyed to be opened this December.

In an interview with City Councilor Bebot Abellanosa who is at the same time the CEO of Cyber Tower Development Corporation and the President of ACT, corrected that the mall to be opened is not part of the ACT but a separate entity which they will call as the City Mall.

“We saw a commercial potential in the area so we decided to utilize the potential and decided to open a three level mall,” reasoned Abellanosa.

The whole property has a total land area of 4,000 to 5,000 square meters inclusive of its basement parking. The mall will take the lower ground and to the second floor of the whole building and the school takes the third to 10th floors.

And since the mall is located near a school, Abellanosa pointed out that “it will not be purely a mall because we will make it educational in which schools can do tours too. Since ACT is an IT school, we are thinking of having an IT tour concept. We are working with the DOST right now to acquire some educational module for us to be able to organize tours like this so that students can experience things they can’t normally experience in other malls.”

He revealed that a technology tunnel will be built in the mezzanine level of the ACT Cyber Tower which they plan to open for public viewing and will become the launching pad of promoting IT tourism in Cebu. This move will also aim to highlight the facilities of the school and the skills of its students as it applies their knowledge on hands-on experiences using cutting edge technology.

Just about this early, the commercial building already received several applications for lease and Abellanosa said that it is more than enough already for their opening. He revealed that McDo is also eyeing the area after Jollibee opened there last August. This month, they will be completing all contracts for lease. – Rhia de Pablo

Trip Na Trip and Urban Zone explore Club Ultima and Crown Regency hotels (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Lifestyle&p=52&type=2&sec=74&aid=20070917145)

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

Cebu City has become an increasingly trendy travel target especially for discerning busy urbanites or bold nomadic types alike. With well-kept travel secrets, tourists can forge a completely fulfilling itinerary in a mere few days.

Three of the best first choices – for those craving for international flair infused with culture and adventure – are Crown Regency Suites Mactan, Club Ultima at Fuente Cebu and Crown Regency Residences at Guadalupe Cebu city.

Recently last August 24, ABS-CBN’s Bayan Production, brought the whole “Trip na Trip” and Urban Zone team led by the Vice President’s daughter, “Kat-Kat” de Castro, with ex-PBB housemates, Uma Khouny, Franzen Fajardo and guest co-host Nel Rapiz of PBB season 2, to explore Club Ultima and the Crown Regency hotels.

The fresh progressive energy immediately charged the team as they settled in; the charge grew to a surge of comforting sense of welcome as they took in the alluring scene of the properties. Trip na Trip and Urban Zone, a magazine TV show for travel and design, will feature Club Ultima’s stunning portfolio of offerings in their next episodes.

Club General Manager, Mike Villegas toured the Urban Zone team to see the club’s bodacious scenic variety per level. The trippers Kat-Kat and Uma spent a great deal of time with CEO Richard King himself, over few swings at the Virtual Golf Simulator and an oriental lunch buffet at the Wang Shan Lo Restaurant.

Club Ultima’s social grace, culinary range and “seriously-happening” nightlife, along with its intercontinental mix of products available, is an indicative of the emergence of a fashionable social phenomenon throughout Cebu city. Meanwhile, Franzen and Nel explored the chic facilities inside Crown Regency Suites, Mactan and Crown Regency Residences Guadalupe. Arnold Tence, CEO for the Crown Regency Hotel group and Vice President for Operations, Loleth So, introduced the wacky hosts to the hotel’s Lifestyle- Business portfolio and gastronomic delights.

Without a doubt, the group witnessed Club Ultima and Crown Regency Hotels’ unique characteristics. Sightseeing and recreation abound in these exquisite destinations giving you more reasons for a return visit. For more information, log on to www.clubultima.com and http://www.crownregency.com/

SM Investments to operate 5-star hotel Sofitel in Mactan

SM Investments Corp., the holding firm of the country's richest man Henry Sy, has signed a deal to operate the five-star, 400 room hotel Sofitel in Mactan, Cebu.

In a statement, SM Investments said its Hotel Investments Group recently signed a contract with Accor, the owner of the Sofitel brand of hotels.

Accor operates over 3,800 hotels with 450,000 rooms in 90 countries. Its hotel chains are known worldwide under the names Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel, Mercure, Suitehotel, and All Seasons, among others.

“We welcome this partnership with Accor to operate Sofitel, Cebu as a major step in SM’s bid to invest in the Philippine hotel and tourism business. It excites us to offer no less than a five-star facility in this region, which continues to be the one of the country’s major sources of exports and is a prime tourism destination for its many beaches, dive spots and other interesting sites," Merril Yu, Senior Vice President of SM’s Hotel Investment Group said in the statement.

The Mactan hotel is worth approximately P2.8 billion

SM Investments' Hotel Investment Group also owns the Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay, which is being expanded into a hotel with 260 rooms by November 2008 from the current 128 rooms. The P650 million expansion will likewise add a 1,000-seater grand ballroom and 6 meeting rooms. - GMANews.TV

I think an overhead mono-rail line along Osmena Boulevard would be far better than a tramway since these trams would be very prone to accidents given the kind of drivers we have here.

Moreover, mono-rail lines require less footprints compared to a two-way tramway. While a two-way tramway would need to occupy the same footprint as a two-lane road, a two-way mono-rail lines would only have a one-lane or even half-lane footprint.

I'm thinking a mono-rail line from Ayala Center - Cebu to Fuente Osmene Circle to Osmena Boulevard-Colon Junction would be the most feasible, realistically achievable and practical route for a rail line in Cebu. It even beats the practicality of a Light-Rail Transit line from Car-Car to Danao.

(18 September 2007. Pasay City, Philippines.) SM Investments Corporation (“SMIC” or “SM”), through its Hotel Investment Group, signed a contract with Accor to operate its hotel in Mactan, Cebu, which is situated beside SM City Cebu. The five-star, 400-room hotel will be branded as Sofitel.

Accor is the European leader in hotels and tourism, and operates over 3,800 hotels with 450,000 rooms in 90 countries. Its hotel chains are known worldwide under the names Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel, Mercure, Suitehotel, and All Seasons, among others.

The Php2.8 billion hotel has been designed by Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG) a global leader in design, having worked in over 130 countries and has designed many of the world’s great hotels and resorts such as the Claridges in London, The Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore, and the Atlantis at the Bahamas. The group also owns the landmark Taal Vista Hotel, which is being expanded into a hotel with 260 rooms by November 2008 from the current 128 rooms. The Php650 million expansion will likewise add a 1,000-seater grand ballroom and 6 meeting rooms.

Korean firm to invest P3B on resort in Lapu
By Malou M. Mozo
Sun.Star Correspondent

A well-known hotel chain in Korea will be building a P3-billion five star resort in Lapu-Lapu City.

Proponents of the Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort and Spa held the groundbreaking ceremonies of the project on a 7.5-hectare in Barangay Maribago, in Lapu-Lapu City last Friday.

Construction will begin immediately as the resort is scheduled to open in 2009.

The water park and resort, which will be designed by TPJavier Architects and Associates, is “the biggest Korean investment in hotel development in the country,”says Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano.

Jong Hwan Park, chairman of the Philippine BXT Corporation, conceptualized the project.

Vacation

“He went on a vacation here for four days and stayed in a Mactan hotel. He decided to stay a little longer than expected pero kulang ang accommodation,” explained project consultant Jefferson Lim.

Park saw the shortage of accommodations, especially in Mactan, and found it to be an opportunity for investment.

Durano said there is an increased demand for beach resort as a type of accommodation “because it is what we are short of.”

He said the construction of Imperial Palace Hotel will help solve the shortage of rooms in the province.

“It is a virtuous cycle. By increasing investment volume, we are increasing employment and business opportunities,” he said.

Since the waterpark resort will be marketed in Korea, Durano is sure of a further influx of Korean tourists in the next few years.
With this, he also encouraged existing hotels to upgrade their services and facilities.

Philippine BXT Corp., owned and operated by Korean stakeholders, tapped the services of Imperial Palace Hotel in Seoul to run and manage the resort.

Known to be one of Korea’s finest hotel chains, Imperial Palace Hotel has been recognized for its excellence in providing world-class luxury hotels. This will be their first venture in the Philippines.

“They are also looking into developing a 110-hectare golf court resort and retirement village in Cordova as an added facility,” said Lim.

Why Cebu?

Lim did not elaborate on the Cordova project, however.

The Korean firm decided to implement the project in Cebu because of “the mild temperature…a sea condition (with) which various sea sports can be enjoyed, easy access to big tourist markets, the use of English as a common language and inexpensive prices,” read a statement of Imperial Palace’s Shin Chul Ho.

The world class resort will have 616 rooms in six medium and three low-rise buildings. There will also be 40 single-units complete with amenities.

“The waterpark won’t just be a swimming pool, it will be a milestone in the water entertainment business, and Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort will become a hotel with a true imperial scent” Chul Ho’s statement read.

Firm to expand Cebu City hotel, lays out plan for housing project

CONFIDENCE in Cebu’s tourism industry has prompted a local hotel operator to plan the expansion of its guest capacity in the next three years.

Golden Prince Hotel Inc. (GPHI), which operates Golden Prince Hotel and Suites, plans to increase its current 57 rooms to at least 120 rooms before 2010, said managing director Benny Que.

He said the planned expansion will be done through acquisition of a property adjacent to the hotel’s location on the corner of Acacia St. and Archbishop Reyes Ave., Cebu City.

“There is bullish growth for Cebu in the convention market,” he told Sun.Star Cebu during the 13th anniversary of Golden Valley Hotel, which is also owned and managed by GPHI.

Golden Valley Hotel which opened in 1994 is located on Pelaez Street, Cebu City. It is the first hotel venture of GPHI.

Conventions

Que said that apart from the two hotels enjoying “good” occupancy rate averaging at 90 percent per month, both have also become venues for local conventions.

Golden Valley, for instance, has hosted several government and non-government organization meetings and conferences because of its proximity to the downtown area.

The 50-room economy hotel, with prices ranging from P800 to P1,800 continues to cater to local and foreign guests who stay for two to five days. It also have guests who stay up to 30 days.

“We want so set the trend in the downtown area,” Que said.

On the other hand, Golden Prince Hotel and Suites has seen the increase of corporate bookings even in its first year of operations. The hotel was officially launched last Sept. 25, 2006.

Corporate bookings account for 60 percent of its guests, while foreigners like Americans, Japanese and Europeans make up 40 percent, Que said.

Que also said GPHI will be establishing another company that will venture into residential mass housing project within the next six months.

He said the firm may start with a three hectare lot either in Mactan or Lilo-an, Cebu.

“This will probably be a joint venture,” Que said. (MMM)

Tourist attractions up at Fuente Towers (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=2007091914)
By Rhia de Pablo
The Freeman
Wednesday, September 19, 2007

After the super structures of the Crown Regency’s Fuente Towers were to be completed, sky rides, insanity rides and other cutting edge attractions are to be installed afterwards similarly patterned after tourist destinations abroad.

According to an interview with Fuente Triangle Realty Development’s Vice-President of sales and marketing Jose Ma. H. Gianzon that earlier this month arrangements with contractors from Las Vegas have been done to acquire sky rides, an edge train and insanity rides that are said to be more exciting than ordinary roller coasters amounting to about $2.8 million investment. This will be installed after the towers are completed. He said that this move is in tuned with the master plan of the whole property as it is aimed to transform Cebu into an international spectacle and lure tourists from all over the country.

With the interlink of the three towers: Club Ultima, Crown Regency Hotel & Towers, and Ultima Residences, a total lifestyle environment wherein home, work and play are all within reach. If one is a resident of Ultima Residences, the Fuente Towers would become a global village.

The Crown Regency Fuente is a loft-type building. Its ground level is scheduled to be completed by November and the top level by December. The building will be the tallest of three towers with 36 levels. It is planned to become not just an ordinary five star hotel but it will promote high end medical tourism as it will have a medical diagnostics clinic and a doctor’s clinic utilizing cutting edge technology like no other. Crown Regency Hotel & Towers have dedicated two floors for a medical diagnostic center and doctor’s clinics. The diagnostic center is well equipped with all the modern medical technologies found in major hospitals. The three floors above the tower will be costumed built to be used as recovery rooms after stressful operations. And Gianzon said that this will be Fuente Triangle’s contribution to the advent of medical tourism in the country.

Gianzon also revealed that the tower’s 28th floor will become an observatory with telescopes wherein one can look into the universe. The top floor area will have a skywalk similar to that in Thailand wherein a harness will be set up as the floor will be transparent so that one can have the feeling of flying in the sky. It will also have a sky bar that will protrude out of the building to make diners feel like dining in the sky.

Gianzon revealed that the towers are designed to create an integrated environment wherein each building will have a role in its entire home concept. The tower one will be designed for residential uses while across on the tower two will become a living room area where business transactions could be done. The tower three could become a guest room and playground where Club Ultima members can treat and receive their visitors.

“We believe that a lot of tourists will be drawn by these developments. So we encourage everyone to invest now to double their money in no time,” he said.

The tower’s entire integrated environment is expected to be fully completed by the year 2009. It will be operational by the end of this year and 60 rooms will be opened by next month.

“There is nothing like this in Manila and these developments indicate the progress that Cebu can get only if it can put itself together,” reckoned Gianzon.

Tomas to keep SRP lot negotiations hush-hush (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Local%20News&p=52&type=2&sec=70&aid=200709196)
The Freeman
Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Mayor Tomas Osmeña will no longer reveal details of his negotiations with potential investors at the South Road Properties after some investors reportedly criticized him for revealing details of their negotiations.

Osmeña, who said he respects the wishes of potential investors, yesterday explained that he revealed details of negotiations to the public because he only wanted to be transparent just like the way he is running City Hall.

The mayor, however, told reporters that there are five potential investors who want to purchase the 30-heactare part of the SRP at the Mambaling side. The city would soon bid out the 30-hectare area.

“There are at least five interested bidders but I can’t give you the details because I was criticized by investors for talking about our negotiations. But I was just transparent,” Osmeña said.

There are also investors who want the other portions of the 300-hectare facility but Osmeña said that the city would prioritize the sale of the 30-hectare portion, saying the city would be very liberal on its first sale.

Earlier, the mayor said that there is a certain investor who offered to buy the lot for P2 billion but while the city has not decided on it, the lot is still open for other offers. He said that the lot will be sold at a minimum of P7,000 to P13,000 per square meter or around P2 billion to P4 billion for all 30 hectares.

“Our first sale would be very liberal, so now is the best time to make a deal,” he said.

He reiterated that the city is aggressive in selling the SRP because it needs to have extra income aside from traditional sources to meet its liquidity requirement for the next few years.

Osmeña earlier said that the city needs to raise P500 million this year to take care of the city’s debts for its loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation for the funds it spent in developing the SRP.

The city government still has a remaining balance of P6.3 billion on its loan with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation as part of the 12.292 billion yen it borrowed from the bank to build the SRP. The loan is payable in 20 years. - Wenna A. Berondo/QSB

^^ only in Cebu that "BOB MARLEY FESTIVAL" is celebrated annually... all reggae fanatics/artists from all over the nation converged in Cebu to celebrate the death anniversary of The Father of Reggae (Bob Marley)... if i'm not mistaken, they're are now on its 12th year... one of the movers in Cebu is none other than JR. KILAT (Budoy)

.... it was the Reggae Band Tropical Depression (Mr. Papa Dom - Philippine's father of Reggae) who in 2001 christened Cebu as the Reggae Capital of the Philippines...

Excerpt from an old news article:
"....this genre of music has become so ingrained into the local urban milieu that when Tropical Depression, the Philippines’ premier reggae band, came to Cebu for the 2001 celebration, they promptly christened the metropolis the “Reggae Capital of the Philippines.” There is no other reggae festival that can compare to Cebu’s --- and that’s putting it mildly. This annual event may be a long way from becoming a Sinulog, but Cebu can say with confidence that it is the only reggae festival being celebrated annually in the Philippines."

... know reggae artists/bands in the Philippines:

TROPICAL DEPRESSION, HEMP REPUBLIC, REGGAE MSTRES, ENCHI, GAUCHO, DIWATA ANAK NG TRIBU,
HERBS, JR.KILAT, 13 JUDGES, PURPLEPAKA, WHO'S NEXT, BAMBU SPLIFF, KADANGYAN, BUDBROWNIZ,

Microsoft International to hold summit in Cebu (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=20070919263)
The Freeman
Thursday, September 20, 2007

Cebu’s tourism appeal has caught the interest of Microsoft International to hold its Worldwide Platform Strategy Summit here this coming November, bringing here over 100 top executives of Microsoft from all over the world.

Microsoft Southern Philippines sales operations director Boy Bawal announced that this is the first time in the history of Microsoft International, that it picked the Philippines, particularly Cebu as its venue for the annual worldwide summit.

The over 100 summit delegates will be led by Microsoft general manager Bill Hillf that will be held at the Plantation Bay Resort and Spa.

Microsoft’s Platform Strategy is led by Hillf with primary focus to champion platform initiative across these groups, while leading long term strategy planning in the Windows Server and Tools organization.

“We are promoting the Philippines, especially Cebu. We pushed for the holding of this summit here,” said Bawal.

Bawal said these over 100 delegates, who are executives of Microsoft International, will also be good marketers for Cebu, when they will experience Cebu’s unique tourism advantages.

Aside from promoting Cebu as an emerging Information Technology (IT) market for Microsoft products, Bawal said Microsoft Philippines is also pushing to promote the tourism appeal of the Philippines, whenever the Philippine-team joins any worldwide conventions for Microsoft.

“We are proud of the Philippines, and Cebu is our come-on to invite them to come here. This is the first time that an international Microsoft Summit will be held in the Philippines,” he said.

Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational computer technology firm with 79,000 employees in 102 countries with global annual revenue of US$51.12 billion as of 2007.

Legends Hotel to kick off regional expansion in Cebu
By Ehda M. Dagooc
Thursday, September 20, 2007

Filipino-owned hotel chain Legends Hotels International Corporation (LHI) will soon make its presence in Cebu through an establishment of a City Resort Hotel that might be situated near the Cebu Business Park (CBP).

In an interview with LHI assistant vice president Dante C. Cruz he said that the company will start formulating its Cebu entry plan within the next three to five years that may incur the company an investment of P250 million to P300 million.

LHI which is operating several hotel brands in the Philippines, mostly in Luzon, like the Legend Villas, Kabayan Hotels, the Mabuhay Manor, and The Legend Palawan, will kick off its regional expansion in the country, starting with Cebu.

The company owns a property near the CBP, the location where the old Magellan Hotel used to stand.

As of now, Cruz said LHI is still studying whether to build a business hotel, or a City Resort Hotel, depends on the market demand, he said.

“We have our eyes set already for Cebu,” he said in a recent press conference. Initially, the plan is to build a 650-room hotel here.

However, the company will still have to decide what brand it will use either a Legend Villas line, which his for upscale sophisticated market, or the Kabayan Hotel brands, that are targeted for the traveling domestic market, and Mabuhay Manor for the Balikbayan market.

If the Cebu plan will materialized, Cruz said it will be the largest LHI hotel in the country, offering over 600 rooms.

The ideal hotel facility for Cebu will be built within the range of 200 to 600 rooms, because of the robust growth of domestic and foreign tourist arrivals here.

Undoubtedly, he said Cebu is the crown jewel for tourism in the Philippines, and LHI will have to take advantage of this development, by making its presence here.

The Cebu hotel would also partner with its sister hotels in Metro Manila, and Palawan to bring guests from one place to another.

Cebu and Palawan hotel facilities could be a good partner, making Cebu as the gateway to bring guests for more tourism adventures in Palawan.

He said the company has responded to the call of the room-shortage problem in Cebu, which has been the battle-cry of tourism stakeholders.

LHI will build and operate the property, boasting of its expertise in managing a business hotel, or an economy accommodation facility.

LHI is a 100 percent Filipino-owned and Filipino-managed chain of hotels. Today, it provides accommodation beyond 600 rooms, with a wide range of clientele such as company executives, families, OFWs, balikbayans, business travelers, local and foreign tourists.

MANDAUE City—National Chess Federation of the Philippines president Butch Pichay said they will bid for the right to host the World Chess Olympiad in 2012 as he welcomed guests and participants at the start of the 6th Asian Individual Chess Championship at the Cebu International Convention Center here yesterday.

Pichay, who assumed the NCFP presidency only last March, said the sprawling complex located at the heart of this bustling city can accommodate more than 3,000 people, including participants, officials, guests and members of the media who will cover the event.

The Philippines last hosted the Chess Olympiad back in 1992 at the Philippine International Convention Center, with no less than then President Cory Aquino as special guest and keynote speaker.

The next Olympiad willl be held in Dresden, Germany next year to be followed by Siberia, Russia in 2010. The bidding for hosting for the Olympiad for 2012 will be held during next year’s Games in Germany.

“This [CICC] is an ideal place to host the Olympiad because it can accommodate more than 3,000 people. We’re going to make the bid next year, but first we have to find sponsors to pay the cash bond, which is priced at P1 million,” said Pichay during a brief conversation with members of the sports media after his speech.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia joined Pichay in welcoming the participants, which included 28 grandmasters and 11 international masters from 17 countries, and enjoined the guests to enjoy and warmth and hospitality of the Cebuanos.

Garcia told the audience that Philippine history actually began in Cebu when Ferdinand Magellan strayed into Mactan. The amiable governor then joked that when Lapu-Lapu killed the Spanish voyager, Cebu “had since earned the reputation of having killed its first tourist.

Fide lifetime honorary president Florencio Campomanes, back after a long rest after figuring in a vehicular accident in Turkey, also spoke briefly and thanked local and foreign participants and said he is looking forward to watch their “beautiful games.” He also urged everyone to play their best under the Fide motto of “gens una sumus,” which means “we are one family.”

The 11-round chess tournament, which will end Sept. 30, is also backed by Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., Department of Tourism, Nature’s Spring, Crown Regency Hotel, Tigereye Inc., Southwestern University and media partners Business Mirror and dwIZ in cooperation with the provincial government of Cebu headed by Garcia.

Eugene Torre, Asia’s first grandmaster, is the highest-seeded Filipino campaigner here at no. 18, followed by fellow GMs Joey Antonio (no. 19) and Mark Paragua (no. 20), who arrived early morning yesterday.

Top 10 Philippine thrills of the deep
(Manila Bulletin, 09/21/2007, Jaser Marasigan)

The warm waters surrounding the country’s 7,101 islands present an underwater wildlife extravaganza, so spectacular that divers return for an average of 10 trips each, according to the Department of Tourism.
Priding itself as Asia’s Dive Capital, the country lies in the center of the coral triangle which boasts of the most biodiversity and marine-rich waters on earth. It has often been said that the Philippines is to scuba divers, what Switzerland is to skiers, Hawaii to surfers, and Nepal to mountaineers. For those who like to snorkel or anyone seeking an underwater adventure, be a spectator to an aquatic symphony of over 2,000 species of marine fish, as well as more than 400 out of the 500 known coral species in the world.

1. Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is comprised of two distinct reef systems -- the North Reef and the South Reef. The marine park lies in the middle of Sulu Sea, southeast of Puerto Princesa City in Palawan. It is a major nesting spot for endangered sea turtles as well as rare species of fish such as the unusual fox–faced rabbitfish.

2. Anilao is the closest weekend paradise for divers based in Manila. Located in the southeast tip of Batangas and nestled in the midst of the quiet town of Mabini, Anilao possesses no presence of powdery sand beaches but the ocean facing it promises a tantalizing life of sea water creatures in its 35 dive sites.

3. Balicasag Island in Bohol is surrounded by a coral reef that is good for both diving and snorkelling. There is a marine sanctuary on the southern side of the island where you will find soft and hard corals in the shallows, together with anemones, sponges, crinoids and feather stars as well as barracuda, jacks, groupers and batfish, among others.

4. Moalboal in Cebu is beautiful and picturesque. Pescador and Sunken Islands are favorites among underwater photographers and snorkelers. The house reef boasts of interesting marine life such as white tips, eagle rays, turtles, frogfish, moray eels, devil fish, etc.

5. Apo Reef is located off the west coast of the island of Mindoro. Apo Reef diving has some spectacular drop-offs and walls with some of the best visibility in the country. If you like big fish action, Apo Reef will not disappoint you, it is abundant with schools of trevally, tuna, barracuda, hammerheads, white and black tip reef sharks, manta, eagle and sting rays, and turtles.

6. Apo Island in Negros Oriental, the most populous and diverse aquatic ecosystem in the world, was recreated at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago on a 27,000 sq. ft. area costing million. This interactive state-of-the-art project called The Philippine Wild Reef Exhibit took almost 10 years to complete. But of course, why would you fly to Chicago to see the replica when you can see the real thing here.

7. Puerto Galera in Mindoro is blessed with one of the world’s most beautiful natural harbors. It is known as the Pearl of Mindoro and is world–famous for its splendid beaches, coral reefs, and exquisite dive sites. There are shallow coral gardens, interesting rock formations, and colorful species to watch, like crabs, shrimps, sea anemones, moray, and trumpet fishes.

8. Subic Bay in Olongapo is one of the best wreck diving sites in Asia. Subic’s World War II wrecks covered almost the entire war period. No less than 25 Japanese ships were reported sunk during the war years. Some of these may have been removed in the late 1950s as salvage operations were done to open up the bay for shipping.

9. Malapascua in Cebu was discovered for its wide white sandy beach and later, for its beautiful coral gardens and excellent dive spots. Malapascua offers the only daily thresher shark sightings in the world.

10. Coron Bay in Busuanga island, Palawan is the final resting place for nine sunken ships from World War II. Also found in waters surrounding the island are limestome walls which rise to heights of 22 meters offering a spectacular view above and below water. Because the area draws so much interest, dive centers are plentiful, as are boats and rental equipment to visit the site.

Int’l youth center to be built in Cebu (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Local%20News&p=52&type=2&sec=70&aid=20070921219)

Saturday, September 22, 2007

To provide youth leaders and organizations a venue to tackle current issues that concern the youth sector, the National Youth Council commissioner together with concerned youth leaders from Cebu have agreed to build an international youth center here in the province.

“We plan to build the center here in Cebu because Manila is already a congested area. And also youth leaders from all over the country always want to go to Cebu for their trainings and conventions,” said NYC commissioner-at-large Michael Francis Lopez.

Lopez was in Cebu recently for his conferment as Haribon Ambassador for the Environment together with actor Piolo Pascual and Cebuana singer Raki Vega (see separate story on Entertainment Section).

The center will become a venue where youth leaders and NYC- accredited organizations from all over the country and even partners abroad can meet to tackle different issues that will interest the youth sector as well as trainings, seminars and conferences of youth leaders and organizations.

Lopez also added that the center will welcome corporate foundations that have projects or programs that concern the youth.

“This is one of our dreams because other countries already have an international youth convention center and we should also have one here,” Lopez said.

But before they start building the physical structure for the international youth center, Lopez said that they first have to raise funds in order to organize a youth foundation.

Lopez said they have already worked out a plan to organize a concert for a cause that will feature Piolo Pascual, who will be one of the foundations’ trustees along with other youth leaders from Cebu.

The concert will be held in Cebu and is prescheduled to be staged this coming January or February.

Lopez said they plan to negotiate with the city or province as to where the center will be built. The center is envisioned to be realized within three years. — Rhia de Pablo/BRP

Construction firm eyes 51% stake in Primetown

By Elizabeth Sanchez-Lacson
Inquirer
Last updated 07:48pm (Mla time) 09/21/2007

MANILA, Philippines--Construction and engineering firm Eurovek Building Solutions Inc. has said it is keen on reviving an 8,000-square meter residential-hotel project on Mactan Island of inactive listed firm Primetown Property Group Inc.

Primetown was hit by the property slump arising from the 1997 Asian financial crisis and its projects, including that in Mactan, were shelved.

Eurovek president Miguel Manzano said Primetown's 26-storey Gold Coast Towers Project in Mactan was envisioned to be one of country's largest luxury residential resorts, with 800 rooms and a project cost of P3 billion.

Primetown is considered the pioneer in "condotel," or condominium hotels, development in the country.

On July 28, 2003, Primetown sought corporate rehabilitation and debt payment suspension before the Makati regional trial court. In August 2003, the court granted it a stay order and its rehabilitation plan was approved in 2005.

After suspending its real-estate developments in 1998, the firm supported its operations by collecting receivables for completed projects, and by liquidating some assets.

Eurovek is a Filipino firm engaged in design engineering and electromechanical construction. It is also into importation, marketing and distribution of building materials.

It is presently doing engineering works for a Dubai mall and has supplied materials for projects of DMCI, HSBC and Rockwell.

Primetown shareholders are expected to ratify this Saturday a memorandum of agreement inked by the company and Eurovek in July this year.

This will be Primetown's first stockholders' meeting since 2003. Trading of its shares is still suspended.

Under the MOA, Eurovek will acquire at least 51 percent of Primetown or 1 billion shares.

Upon the implementation of the deal, Primetown's name will be changed to Eurovek Land Inc.

Once its entry into Primetown is approved by the former's shareholders, Eurovek will pursue restructuring talks with creditors to help trim Primetown's debts of P400-P500 million.

Primetown was established in 1989 by the Yap family which had been into steel and construction materials trading.

Its first project was the Century Citadel Inn Makati, the first "condotel" project in the country.

In a statement filed with the Philippine Stock Exchange, Primetown said it was looking at resuming the development of its shelved projects, including a beachfront property in Cordova, Mactan, a 10-hectare property in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan and a property in Saranggani, General Santos City.

Isuzu Phils Corp, city gov’t beautify Fuente Osmeña (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Local%20News&p=52&type=2&sec=70&aid=20070922169)

Sunday, September 23, 2007

Officials of the Isuzu Philippines Corporation and the city government beautified the famous Fuente Osmeña circle with ornamental plants yesterday.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña also signed a memorandum of agreement with the car company for a joint undertaking in the beautification and maintenance of the Cebu’s historic landmark.

The company later turned over to the city government and the Parks and Playground Commission, which maintains Fuente Osmeña and other parks in the city, about 600 ornamental plants, plant pots and welcome markers.

Isuzu said the project is part of the Isuzu Park Conservation Campaign for its 10th anniversary celebration.

Isuzu president Keiji Takeda said that Isuzu has been making it a point, every year, to give something back to the environment and to the society. He said that this year Isuzu will focus on greening and preserving major parks in the country like Rizal Park in Manila and Fuente Osmeña in Cebu.

Arthur Balmadrid, vice president for corporate business of Isuzu, said that Isuzu’s move in Fuente Osmeña was its way of thanking the Cebuanos. “We believe that this park and the Cebuanos deserve the colorful flowers and ornamental plants that will soon cover it,” he said.

Isuzu officials said the project will not only make Fuente Osmeña more beautiful but also save the city the cost and effort of replanting after every Sinulog Fiesta celebration.

The Fuente Osmeña, which means “Osmeña’s Fountain,” was built in honor of Sergio Osmeña Sr., known as Cebu’s “Grand Old Man,” who is also the mayor’s grandfather.

Mayor Osmeña said he feels proud of Fuente Osmeña, which has been a witness to many historical events that have shaped the political panorama of the country.

The mayor further said that even the Fuente Osmeña Fountain is immortalized along with the image of the Grand Old Man in the P50 bill.

The park has become greener and cleaner over the years, Osmeña said as he recalled the time when the super typhoon “Ruping” ravaged almost all the trees in Fuente Osmeña that prompted the city to do major tree planting to restore the park.

The mayor also said he likes to call the place Fuente Osmeña then joked, “Maybe next year it will have another name,” in obvious deference to the provincial government’s move to assume ownership of the park.

Osmeña said he had all dilapidated structures in the park demolished “despite all the emotional protests” saying they were not good to look at. “Now Fuente has become simpler, neater and cleaner,” he said.

The beauty of the park could be attributed to the contribution and effort of all the people and organizations like Isuzu, said the mayor. — Wenna A. Berondo/RAE

Project to earn billions

THE completion of an upscale residential resort project in Cebu is estimated to attract at least P10 billion worth of investments in the next 10 years.

“There is healthy interest among buyers in and outside Cebu,” said Landco Pacific Corp. president and chief executive officer Alfred Xerex-Burgos Jr.

He said 20 percent of the 90 lots in phase one of the Monterrazas de Cebu have been reserved by potential homeowners when Landco started to pre-sell the lots last July.

Burgos said the company began selling the premium lot areas of Peaks 1 and 2 of the entire 200-hectare property of the Villalon family.

“We want to sell from the top going down, starting with the most expensive lots, because we want to establish Landco as a high-end project,” he told a press interview during the project’s groundbreaking ceremony last Friday.

Peaks

Parcels of land at the Monterrazas have sizes ranging from 600 square meters to 800 square meters and are priced at P15,000 per square meter.

Landco started “punching the roads” leading to the two mountain peaks that guarantee a view of Mandaue, Cebu and Talisay cities.

One peak is 320 meters above sea level or a height close to a 105-story skyrise building, Burgos said.

The construction of the subdivision’s clubhouse will follow later this year.

Phase one of the project is expected to be finished in the next two years.

“Eventually, we will develop residences catering to the upper middle class,” said Francis Ceballos, Landco executive vice president and chief operating officer.

He said “it is easier to switch from line investors to the upper middle class.”

Recognizing the need to address the project’s drainage system, Ceballos said the company has invested in the development of 25 “detention” ponds that can contain 1,600 millimeters of water at one time.

Flood control

He said the “detention” ponds will prevent storm water during heavy rainfall to rush down from the property and flood the lowlands.

Last April, Landco started developing Monterrazas de Cebu, which spans four kilometers and covers portions of Barangays Guadalupe, Tisa, Laba-ngon, Buhisan and Sapangdaku, all in Cebu City.

The project is a joint venture of Genvi Development Corp., which is headed by siblings Augusto and Margarita Villalon, and Landco.

The entire mixed-use project will feature houses and lots, townhouses, condominiums, gardens, hike trails and other amenities.

The high-rise condominiums will be built in the low-lying portion of the property so as not to mar the view, said Burgos. (MMM)

I prefer that they build the highrise condos on the highest peaks, ala Hongkong, to give a more impressive Cebu skyline when viewed from the sea. The developer can also command a higher price because of the spectacular view. A cluster of highrises on that side will also serve as anchor on the North backdrop of the city against the already dense cluster of Marco Polo Hotel and City Lights highrise condominiums on the South. Para balance tanawon...but then again, what do I know? :dunno:

Cebu is ready for Medical Tourism (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=20070923189)
By Ehda M. Dagooc
Monday, September 24, 2007

Although Cebu is still considered as a raw destination to be taking part of the US$3 billion medical tourism market, tour operators believed otherwise.

National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (Naitas-Cebu) president Jenny Franco said that Cebu can now start attracting medical tourists, despite the lack of “ideal” infrastructure for medical tourism.

“We can customize packages in accordance to the patients’ needs like dental, beauty treatments, surgery, since no hospital yet in Cebu offers facilities that are ideal to host the sophisticated foreign patients,’ Franco said.

Franco added that travel operators could create packages that depends on the client’s requirement, like booking them in a five-star resort, while linking them to medical specialists whose expertise are at par with doctors in Manila, or in other countries.

“We can already attract medical tourists. It all will depend on the packages being offered by the travel agencies,” she emphasized reiterating that lack of proper infrastructure should not be a hindrance in taking advantage of the multi-billion dollar medical tourism market.

Franco, who owns the Travel Vision tour agency, added that the concept of medical tourism need not conform to the traditional impression wherein a patient should be confined in an upscale hospital, saying they can avail of the medication, while staying at a five star resort, which is less than an hour travel to the Cebu City proper.

In fact, she mentioned that her agency had a Japanese client who suffered from a stroke, and was able to get treatment by good doctors here, while staying at Shangri-La Resort in Mactan.

She said it was just one of her foreign clients that have already enjoyed Cebu, as a medical tourist site. What is important, she said is a medical tourist can get good medical attention, enjoy the tropical weather here, and stay in a five-star resort or hotel.

On the other hand, Department of Tourism (DOT-7) regional director Patria Aurora Roa said that what hinders Cebu from taking off as a preferred Medical Tourism hub is the slow reaction of hospitals to invest in upgrading their facilities, even just to accredit their establishments with the DOT.

Group to hold 8th motorshow next month

FOR the longest time, the absence of a huge venue for big shows was a huge setback for Cebu.

Despite its impressive performance as an investment and tourism destination, Cebu’s lack of facilities to host large-scale indoor and outdoor events left many show organizers no other recourse but to mount big projects only in Manila.

This was the case of the first-ever Motorshow Cebu International in 1989.

Although considered quite impressive enough at that time, the show which supposedly originated in Cebu, gradually left town and moved to Manila due to lack of ample exhibit space.

Fortunately, after a long hiatus, the Motorshow Cebu International finally returns to town this Oct. 16 to 21, thanks to a bigger venue complete with modern facilities and amenities: the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City.

Perfect venue

Built for the 12th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) last January, the CICC has become the perfect venue for large-scale events that has enhanced Cebu as a center for international trade, tourism and culture in Asia.

The show’s organizer, the Philippine Exhibitions and Trade Corp. (Petco), said the CICC is the right place for an event as elaborate, complicated and space-consuming as the 8th Motorshow Cebu International.

Petco said they will take advantage of CICC’s various indoor and outdoor spaces to accommodate the show’s different highlights and special events.

The motorshow’s corporate display and sponsor pavilion will be at the Summit Hall 1 located at the main level of the CICC.

The location is considered most appropriate for the exhibit that will showcase the latest models of cars and vehicles as well as new products, services and related technologies in the automotive and cycle industries.

Accessories

CICC’s Plenary Exhibition Hall at the second floor, on the other hand, will host the accessories section of the exhibit that will showcase automotive parts and accessories, auto gadgets, car care products, maintenance and service equipment, car air conditioning, cycling gear, motorbikes/motorcycle parts, gadgets, bikes and cycle care products as well as maintenance and service equipment, allied industries and services.

The VIP Parking Area located at the CICC’s lower level will accommodate the motorshow display and competition area. Here, competing vintage and classic cars as well as contemporary European and Japanese cars with body and engine modifications will be placed on display.

The CICC’s spacious grounds will play host to other exciting motorshow highlights such as the well-loved remote control races and the Cebu Grand Slalom. It will also serve as the start and finish lines of the action-packed treasure hunt and adventure Hunt that will crisscross their way through Cebu’s scenic spots. (PR)
