@Iloilocitykid, perhaps you have missed somehow to understand my statement: IMO, "Cebu will be the biggest shopping capital in the south"---->since Cebu will have many malls in the near future. Again, this is just my point of view.^^

some news for you guys...
1. phase 2 of the ayala mall will hopefully begin next year. do you like their terminal? nah, they will destroy it again, or part of it will be to give way for the expansion. daghana kuarta oi.

2. there are 2 more BPO buildings that CHI will build (aside from the one under construction), 1 will be in asiatown (12-storey), and the other one in CBP (14-storey?)

3. hotel in asiatown will probably begin construction next year. 'saw the rendering and i think it's cool. architect is a. medalla.

4. @jarenz mentioned about i4 and it's true. it will be 17-storeys high (saw the renderings too. it's boxy but it's ok. it's 17-storey)

5. in cbp alone there are lots of plans already. there's one across fgu tower and the one mentioned by @ivanc across park tower 1 and others that i forget sorry.

6. but for me, the grandest news will be (if plans don't miscarry of course) is the two towers in front of ayala mall. those vacant lots besides cebu commercial tower along arch. reyes. one tower is for BPO at 24-storey and the other tower is for residential at maybe 30-storey. but this will not start until 2012 and let's not expect too much.

these are all i can remember.

in addition:

- 33-storeys Tower by JEG Development Corp. (on the lot of Acacia Place)
[hotel,condo,& commercial]
** TG Tower 2 (still finding for right location in AITP)
** Ultima Residences Lahug Tower (25-30++ storeys)
** 15-storeys People Support Center Cebu (lot beside Skyrise 2)
** E-Office Tower (AITP)
** 4 midrise condo by Fuente Triangle Realty
-1 in Mandaue; 1 in D. Jakosalem ... i forgot the rest
** 3 highise project by CHI in AITP
-2 highrise project by CHI in CBP
** 28-storeys condo in Busay (no further info yet)

but for me, the grandest news will be (if plans don't miscarry of course) is the two towers in front of ayala mall. those vacant lots besides cebu commercial tower along arch. reyes. one tower is for BPO at 24-storey and the other tower is for residential at maybe 30-storey. but this will not start until 2012 and let's not expect too much.

FYI

The height of Crown Regency Hotel is approximately 140 meters. My source are architects working for TVAP CEBU, the designers of Crown Regency. This figure is the structural height, which is up to the roof/helipad and does not include the ride on top.

iComm International bullish of Cebu’s business ambiance (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=20071025189)

By Rhia de Pablo
The Freeman
Friday, October 26, 2007

For four years of operation in the country, iComm International shares confidence in the Philippines specifically Cebu, as it continues to avail of the province’s rich pool of local talents.

“But why not in Cebu? Manila is already saturated. And Cebu has shown us a lot of potential in providing a steady stream of human resources,” iComm International’s Marketing and Communications Manager Orven Enoveso said in an interview.

As Enoveso pointed out, Cebu as opposed to Manila is not yet a congested area for business and that its environment is very much conducive for work. He also added that the city’s infrastructure is very much capable to welcome advancement in technology.

He also added out that they particularly chose to locate their corporate headquarters for their global operations in the Philippines specifically in Cebu as it is emerging as one of the top BPO hosting countries right now. “According to studies, Cebu is the 4th top BPO locations and that is the main purpose why we are here.”

Having started its Philippine operation in 2003, iComm International has since located in Cebu. The company is the corporate headquarters of a multinational group operating with several international affiliates in the USA, Japan, U.K, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. Their full range of service include: IT, customer, communication, marketing, human resources, financial and administration.

Their international affiliates include: IBC Japan, a global auto exporter of quality used Japanese vehicles and Autoterminal.com group of companies, the international wholesaler and distributor of IBC Japan’s vehicles.

By maintaining their own website, iComm is able to manage the tedious selling process of used Japanese cars and globally, they have had sold a lot already.

Big news of their operations is that they now have managed to aggressively expand in their exportation of cars in the US market for left hand drives. With a bigger coverage of the global market, 60% for right-hand drives and 40% for left hand drives, iComm eyes expansion in their operations worldwide.

Recently, the company moved in the IT Park and expanded overseas and opened a new facility in Bandung, Indonesia. By tapping into new sources of talents they are continuously trying to deepen their current resource pool.

“We position ourselves to compete in terms of having the good people, that’s why we get people who have longer experience in the industries they have worked in,” said Enoveso.

But they expressed that although they are selling cars from Japan, they are an open book in terms of making their business. And even if car smuggling is a hot issue in the country’s auto industry these days, Enoveso said that their sales and revenues are not even affected as they are more geared into pursuing the global market.

French businesses eye Cebu (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2007/10/26/bus/french.businesses.eye.cebu.html)
Sun.Star
Friday, October 26, 2007

GROWTH in tourism, information technology, and fashion accessories and furniture manufacturing industries in Cebu is attracting investors in France.

However, local industry stakeholders need to intensify their marketing efforts if they want to capitalize on French entrepreneurs who want to do business outside of France and Europe, said Bernard Flour, Le Club president of the French Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (FCCP).

“Business- and tourism-wise, Cebu has a very strong potential. The city is more at ease, more relax,” he said.

Flour said Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia’s visit to France last year, for example, has attracted the attention of a joint chamber when she discussed the prospects of Cebu as a business and leisure hub.

He said that as a tourism destination, Cebu and its neighboring provinces have huge potentials to attract French travelers.

Ecozone advantage

Flour said the approval of the bill declaring the entire Cebu an “economic development zone” will be a major competitive advantage for the province as cost of doing business here will be lowered.

But he said the province, and the country in general, is competing against other member-countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) like Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia in terms of infrastructure development.

The French have little knowledge about the Philippines, he said.

To help raise awareness about the Cebu market among the French and vice versa, the FCCP together with Marco Polo Plaza Cebu will introduce for the first time the Soiree Beaujolais Cebu 2007 on Nov. 29. The event will also feature Beaujolais Nouveau, a red wine made from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France.

Festival wine

The wine is considered one of the most popular “vin de primeur” (prime wine), whose grapes are fermented only for a few weeks after harvest. It is officially released for sale on the third Thursday of November.

The annual international festival has already sold over 65 million bottles of red wine, nearly half of the region’s total yearly production, Flour said.

Since the wine undergoes a short fermentation period, it tastes “fruity, fresh and easy to drink,” Flour said during a press conference yesterday.

Marco Polo Cebu general manager Hans Hauri said Soiree Beaujolais Cebu will provide an opportunity to promote business interests among French and Cebuano businessmen.

“We want to send the message to the Filipinos that France is not only about Paris,” said Le Club administrator Henri Ortiz.

Flour also said the event aims to attract more members to FCCP. (MMM)

Fully air-conditioned mall space
-Over 66,000 square meters of store space
-96% avg. occupancy rate
-97,000 visitors per day on avg. weekdays
-110,000 visitors per day on avg. weekends

ayala center: 107,000 sq. meters

sm city cebu: 268,000 sq. meters

Where did you get those figures?

Anyway,

SM City Cebu (with all ongoing expansions)
GFA - 161,562 sqm. (Southwing) + 109,000 sqm. (Northwing) = 270,562 sqm.
GLA - 79,116 sqm. (Southwing) + 18,000 sqm. (Northwing) = 97,116 sqm.

Ayala Center Cebu (with all ongoing expansions)
GFA - 160,642 sqm. (Original Structure) + 8,200 sqm. (Rustan's Building) + 21,806 sqm. (Lagoon Redevelopment) = 190,648 sqm.
GLA - 80,000 sqm. (Original Structure) + 3,000 sqm. (Rustan's Building) + 7,000 sqm. (Lagoon Redevelopment) = 90,000 sqm.

Ayala Center Cebu (future expansions - 2008 onwards)
GFA - 190,648 sqm. (present) + 26,104 (Expansion Phase II) + undisclosed (Surprise Expansion Phase III)
GLA - 90,000 sqm. (present) + 13,000 (Expansion - Phase II) + undisclosed (Surprise Expansion Phase III)

Nice Jarenz! Finally, you were able to take photos of these, thank you. It seems that with all the current transformations that ACC is undergoing, every transformation is planned to implement the scale model above, right? (e.g. Take a look at the lagoon area, it looks similar to the lagoon redevelopment being constructed now with the parking building, alfresco areas and all) Yeah, it seems like it. They will continue to redevelop and redevelop for the long term.

Guys,
I'm not sure if the Nov 2007 issue of Conde Naste Traveller magazine is already available in Cebu but I saw a copy of it at Barnes & Noble. Good news. Cebu made it again as one of the top 10 islands in Asia/Indian Ocean. It is ranked #7 this year. Kalimot lang ko if Cebu was ranked higher or lower last year. But it's something to be proud of. And hopefully Cebu City will be included in the top 10 cities in Asia soon.

Is it really losing its market, specifically the middle-class, petit bourgeoise and the poor? Looks like its still jampacked with people buying affordable goods but as according to Rage@Cebu and even my parents told me that before it was more crowded in Colon than it is today.

Is this true? I haven't seen Cebu's growth since '89 (and barely remember it since im still a toddler, wahehehehe!!!) :D

am not that old, but i reckon way back in the 90's when both SM and Ayala were'nt around, i remember that Colon was indeed more packed than it is today...such a shame, since there are a lot of great bargains there just waiting to be discovered...

the city government ought to make an effort to make downtown cleaner and safer, that should lure more tourists. I've read a guide book telling potential tourists to avoid Downtown Cebu

it's sad to note that visitors to Cebu tend to gravitate towards the huge malls with their 'artificial' environments, over that of downtown, which evokes the true soul of Cebu

actually, there's not much of a difference...

they visit downtown for the sights, but unfortunately, rarely do they shop there and still go for the malls...i'd love to see a group of caucasians bringing their bargain finds in net bags :)

actually, am one of those people who believe that malls are evil...why so, when they create jobs? well, yes, they create jobs, but in the long run, only the tycoons would benefit...people ought to get into business and enterprising...i'm not an economics guru, but i'm 99% sure that it--and not malls--makes for a healthy economy

i know you're deeply rooted to the mall...and considering downtown's current state, i understand why you feel that way...but if only downtown looked just a bit better (and felt a bit safer), i'm pretty sure you'd consider on changing your stance...

but hey, downtown, despite itself, is still a great shopping experience that you should try one day--under one huge roof, the sky :)

^^ Bring Sinjin sa Colon at Metro!!! Waheheheheehe!!! I'm going to kidnap you and bring you to Colon, hehehehe!!! joke! Anyway, it is your preference and so I respect your decision. ;)

Anyway, why are Filipinos are so fond of malls rather than street shopping? Is it because of the tropical heat that we prefer to stay indoors (at aircon's comfort)? Even so, the downtown hasn't lost its charm for bargain hunting for the masses and even for the bougeoise and the elite, IMO. :) Carbon is still lively.

Not only that, but of course Carbon as well, wahehehehe!!!
Pero if you are not given that condition, will you still step on downtown Cebu?

IMO, there is something about downtown Cebu that defines the "heart of the city". :D

^^exactly my point...revitalize downtown and make it more people friendly, that even the umh, not-so-healthy people, would love...IMO, people ought to enjoy strolling in their city streets than in artificial environments due to the fact that the streets have become unwalkable...

* * *

i understand the great demand for shopping centers in Cebu, considering its people's purchasing power, but IMO, a new set of malls isnt the answer...what we need is a decent shopping district--and of course, a change in people's attitudes towards shopping downtown--if we are to become truly 'world class'

OT: i do hope that you'd get to be a lot better so you could become a more 'outdoors kind' of person :)

Correction SM City has close to 400 shops already about 200 to be added for the new wing... : )

Where did you get those figures?

Anyway,

SM City Cebu (with all ongoing expansions)
GFA - 161,562 sqm. (Southwing) + 109,000 sqm. (Northwing) = 270,562 sqm.
GLA - 79,116 sqm. (Southwing) + 18,000 sqm. (Northwing) = 97,116 sqm.

Ayala Center Cebu (with all ongoing expansions)
GFA - 160,642 sqm. (Original Structure) + 8,200 sqm. (Rustan's Building) + 21,806 sqm. (Lagoon Redevelopment) = 190,648 sqm.
GLA - 80,000 sqm. (Original Structure) + 3,000 sqm. (Rustan's Building) + 7,000 sqm. (Lagoon Redevelopment) = 90,000 sqm.

Ayala Center Cebu (future expansions - 2008 onwards)
GFA - 190,648 sqm. (present) + 26,104 (Expansion Phase II) + undisclosed (Surprise Expansion Phase III)
GLA - 90,000 sqm. (present) + 13,000 (Expansion - Phase II) + undisclosed (Surprise Expansion Phase III)

Both ACC and SM have at least 400+ shops each. Both malls also get at least 100,000 pedestrian traffic each, daily. :)

i stated it as ill-fated because its construction has been temporarily halted by the Mayor as a likely result of disagreements between the two top executives in Cebu,. so the Ciudad mall is unlucky or unfortunate to have been in that circumstance. but i would like to think that Ciudad will soon have its glory once everything is settled :)

McDonald’s intensifies market presence in Cebu (http://http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=20071026144)
By Rhia de Pablo
Saturday, October 27, 2007

After the grand opening of its Escario branch recently, McDonald’s announced that more branches are soon to be opened in Cebu.

McDonald’s operations consultant Grace Eje said in the company’s effort to strengthen its hold of the nationwide market, more branch openings will be expected this year and in the years to come.

McDonald’s will be opening a branch in Tabunok this year and about three to five stores for next year.

Eje added that as a growing market, Cebu plays a vital role in the company’s operations and opening more branches in this part of the country is their way of taking advantage of the lifestyle change of the people.

She shared that at the moment McDonald’s already has 11 branches in Cebu located in Lapu-Lapu, North Road in Mandaue, SM Cebu, Ayala Center, JY Square Mall, Sykes, and South Road in Mambaling, Jones, Fuente, Colon and Escario. She added that all these branches have their own devoted customer-base and is very much competitive to its store chain competitor.

Although their Fuente and Jones outlets are near each other, she pointed out that each has their own set of client-base and does not compete with each other. According to their surveys, the Fuente branch takes hold of the hospitals and its nearby market while Jones covers the Velez area and the whole Jones vicinity.

Among all 11 McDonald’s branches, Jones outlet generates the most revenue aside from the fact that it is primarily the first and the oldest branch in the city having been opened way back in 1992.

Meanwhile, their newest Escario branch is a company owned outlet and boasts of having the biggest drive-thru area among all McDonald’s branches in the city. It also offers a made-for-you concept food processing machine that can serve any McDonald’s treat for only about 35 to 50 seconds.

As of the meantime McDonald’s is still checking the market whether it will be profitable to open the store for 24 hours. But right now they offer 24 hours service only during the weekends as their Fuente and JY branches already operates round-the-clock.

As a drive-thru outlet, Eje stressed that their Escario outlet holds several advantages. She said that the area has high traffic and there are banks, condominiums, offices, and schools nearby that can be catered to.

“There is a huge possibility that the drive-thru segment will work out very well because this branch has a very nice location due to the fact that it’s a high traffic area.” said Eje.

Mc Donald’s Escario has about 80 crew members and Eje stressed that with this number, they are helping the immediate locality for job generation as they employed mostly from the vicinity. Nationwide, McDonald’s already has about 660 crew members except managers as for every outlet they employ an average of 60 crew members.

And in order for McDonald’s to stay at par with their competitor in the food chain industry Eje stressed that, “we always make sure that our customers will be delighted with the experience they have while dining in any McDonald’s store through our fast service and the freshness and quality of our products.”

Hard Rock Café chain mulls hotel, casino in RP (http://http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=49&type=2&sec=27&aid=2007102616)
By Ted P. Torres
Saturday, October 27, 2007
Hard Rock International, the company behind the global café chain, is considering an expansion in its Philippine operations to include hotel and casino ventures, its top executives said.

In a press briefing yesterday, Hard Rock president and chief executive officer Hamish Dodds said they are contemplating on putting up a hotel, a casino and two more cafes in the country by next year.

The additional structures would entail investments of at least $160 million, he said.

Dodds, along with Seminole Gaming chief executive Jim Allen, arrived in the country to scout for new business opportunities and oversee the upgrading of the existing Hard Rock Café in Makati’s Glorietta complex.

Their visit is part of an exploratory swing in Asia by the international food and entertainment chain.

The Makati outlet will be upgraded to a more cosmopolitan look as part of the group’s global activities after Florida-based Seminole Tribe acquired Hard Rock for $965 million in December last year.

The acquisition included the Hard Rock brand, the world’s largest collection of authentic music memorabilia, the 68 company-owned Hard Rock café restaurants and retail stores, including 44 in the US, three in Canada, 17 throughout Europe and three in Australia.

It likewise includes licensing or franchise agreements for another 56 restaurants and five hotels, plus Hard Rock live performance venues.

“There are a lot of upsides in increasing investments in the Philippines. It (government) must implement more responsible economic, political and investment policies to create a better environment,” Dodds said.

He said they are seriously looking at Cebu as a site for another café, as well as “one more in one of the big cities.”

He also said they are not discounting the possibility of entering into a joint venture with local or foreign players in expanding operations in the Philippines.

In fact, Dodds said they are indeed looking at various modes of business partnerships that could benefit their expansion plans in the Asia Pacific region.

Robinsons Land to start high-end Cebu leisure estate
Inquirer
Last updated 01:46am (Mla time) 10/23/2007

Robinsons Land Corp. of the Gokongwei group plans to build its first high-end leisure estate following its purchase of a five-hectare property on Mactan Island in Cebu, the company said.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange Monday, it said the property in the Punta Engaño district would be developed into a condominium resort that would target retirement-home buyers as its main market.

Foreign and domestic tourist arrivals in Cebu increased 20 percent in the first half of the year from the same period last year, with Koreans, Japanese and Americans as the major foreign visitors.

The city government has a five-year tourism plan and has been formulating strategies that target markets in China, Russia, India and ASEAN countries to boost its foreign arrivals record. Elizabeth Sanchez-Lacson; with INQUIRER.net

i do hope that when the time comes that Mactan's beach-front becomes fully developed, they'd consider on converting the portion immediately beside the sea into public space (like say 10-20meters from the hightide line.) if i become mayor of Mactan, i'd exercise my power of imminent domain and purchase the beach for the public, it ought to be open for everyone...the moneyed folks could keep their condos and hotels by the sea, but the beach should not barred from the public by unreasonable entrance fees...with the airport and the multitude of businesses in the island, IMO, the city of Mactan could have enough funds to pursue such an endeavor

So the one they're planning for Cebu is just a café? still great news. :)

The design for the condos is already final. But the details of it cant be seen on that pic i posted above.

Also, the project would be consist of condominium towers using the "GREEN BUILDING" practice. The architect is the president of the Philippine Green Building Council.

Philippine Green Building Council's goal (PhilGBC) is to conserve nonrenewable resources by rethinking architecture and construction methods, by going green, and building with sustainability in mind.

Another example of a Green Condo Building in the Philippines is the upcoming Gramercy Residences at Century City, Makati.

Now this makes AMISA the first of its kind project here in Cebu and the entire VisMin! :okay:

On a side note, any peeps interested to make a biz out of the booming real estate industry / condo constructions in Cebu, you may pm me and let's talk of biz. :okay:

i wonder what's in stored in the new lagoon redevelopment

The Lagoon Redevelopment will introduce new concepts in lifestyle, dining and shopping. Among others, it will feature alfresco dining, orchestrated landscaping, water features and new shops and restaurants. It will feature architecture that is uniquely Cebuano. 4 levels of new sights to explore and enjoy, only at Ayala Center Cebu

Cebu chamber is RP’s best
(http://http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20071028107107.html)

By MARS W. MOSQUEDA JR.

CEBU CITY - President Gloria Arroyo has again handed the award of Most Outstanding Chamber in the Philippines for 2007 to the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI). The CCCI won over 110 other chambers nationwide.

CCCI, the premier business organization in Cebu City, was also elevated to the Hall of Fame for winning the award for three consecutive years.

The award was given at the recently concluded Philippine Business Conference at the Manila Hotel last October 24-26, 2007.

The Most Outstanding Chamber Award is a project of Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry which seeks to recognize local chambers whose leadership and dynamism contributed to business growth and development of the community through active involvement in advocacy, providing a suitable environment for the growth and expansion of commerce and industry.

The Hall of Fame distinction given to CCCI is a result of the organization's exemplary accomplishments and performance as a model business support organization in the country demonstrated by its leadership and dynamism as evidenced by actual accomplishments in the areas of implementation of an advocacy program, partnership with government, growth of membership base, sponsorship of local outreach and community development programs, trade and investment promotion.

In 1997, CCCI was also given the distinction for its advocacy initiatives and wide menu of services and programs benefiting the business community and the society in general.

The Cebu chamber also gained the distinction of being the first chamber in the country and the fourth in the world to be ISO-certified (International Standards Organization) (9001:2000) in the effort to provide better quality service responsive to its’ members need.

In promoting CCCI’s strategic thrusts, ICT and Tourism, it co-hosted the 4th ASEAN Business and Investment which opened doors to global markets in the province.

President Arroyo conferred the award to CCCI represented by its President Francis O. Monera together with Board of Trustees Prudencio Gesta, Samson Tiu, Benjamin Avila, Michael Basubas, Ed Limtingco, Clarito Fruelda, Jose Ng and External Affairs Official Representative Felix Taguiam.

RLC acquires 5-ha Cebu property for high-end dev’t

Friday, October 26, 2007
The Philippine Star

Robinsons Land Corporation expands its robust property portfolio across the country as it disclosed plans to develop the first master-planned condo-resort community in Mactan, Cebu.

The country’s second largest diversified real estate company recently acquired a prime 5-hectare property with a 170-meter beachfront in Punta Engaño district in Mactan, Cebu. It shall be designed to be the first leisure community development of Robinsons Land.

Tourism and business hub of the South

Cebu’s tourism potential and its being the investors’ preferred headquarters in Southern Philippines add to Robinsons Land’s high hopes for its new project and the region itself.

The historic province of Cebu, touted as the gateway to two-thirds of the country’s major islands, has been recording upbeat tourism figures lately. Total foreign arrivals and domestic travels in the first half of the year show substantial growth of 20%, as against last year’s records for the same period. The first six months of the year saw Koreans topping the island’s foreign guest list, followed by the Japanese and the Americans.

Similarly, the local government has recognized Cebu’s tourism potential and has been actively formulating marketing strategies to achieve targets for its 5-year tourism plan, such as tourism missions in Europe. It is also counting on the emerging markets of China, Russia, India, and fellow ASEAN countries to boost its foreign arrivals.

Cebu has also been regarded as a premier business destination in the South, having been part of the Philippine Cyber Corridor masterplan that runs through Baguio, Manila, and Davao. The said vision crafted by the national government aimed to boost telecommunications and technology, and included empowering regions to provide information technology (IT)-related services. Multinational information technology firms and contact centers have likewise found their new homes in Cebu in the recent years, thereby attracting talents also from its neighboring provinces. The development of Cebu’s business parks also serves as a testament to the business-friendly environment of Cebu.

Robinsons Land’s top brass is confident that the organization is ready to maximize the company’s expertise in developing mixed-use communities in promising areas outside Metro Manila. The abounding possibilities in Cebu affirm Robinsons Land’s move to explore opportunities in the Queen City of the South.

Homegrown business

Mixed-use communities, composed of hospitality and residential developments, have been Robinsons Land’s strength. President and Chief Operating Officer Frederick D. Go notes, “Robinsons Land Corporation has gained its formidable status and esteemed name with its strategically located residential condominiums, hotels, and commercial centers that are of world-class quality. Having accomplished this feat, we will now build a landmark five-star condo-resort project in Cebu.”

Go cites that Robinsons Land’s mother company, JG Summit Holdings Inc., traces its roots to Cebu, as founder John Gokongwei, Jr. began his post-war trading business in his hometown. The humble trading activity ventured into by the young Gokongwei in local sailboats over five decades ago has paved the way for the birth of J.G. Summit Holdings Inc., which is now among the Philippines’ largest conglomerates. It holds diverse interests in branded consumer foods, agro-industrial and commodity food products, textile, telecommunications, petrochemicals, air transportation and financial services.

i do hope that when the time comes that Mactan's beach-front becomes fully developed, they'd consider on converting the portion immediately beside the sea into public space (like say 10-20meters from the hightide line.) if i become mayor of Mactan, i'd exercise my power of imminent domain and purchase the beach for the public, it ought to be open for everyone...the moneyed folks could keep their condos and hotels by the sea, but the beach should not barred from the public by unreasonable entrance fees...with the airport and the multitude of businesses in the island, IMO, the city of Mactan could have enough funds to pursue such an endeavor

something that is somewhat like this drawing...

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g304/ether_2006/beach.jpg

furthermore, the beach-side barangays of Mactan could be encouraged to build their own community tourist center, which aside from providing basic services to tourists such as guides, souvenirs, food etc. could also generate income for the community

Trade mission to Russia paying off for exporters (http://http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=20071028131)
By Ehda M. Dagooc
Monday, October 29, 2007

Cebu-made products have now slowly gained interest from the huge Russian market, immediately after a 14-man delegation made a massive market exposure to the key cities in Russia.

The recently concluded business mission to Russia, headed by Russian Federation Honorary Consul Armi L. Garcia, and Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Francis O. Monera, have pulled up the awareness of the Russian market to Cebu especially in the home furnishing production and tourism segments.

The delegation participated in a four-day Gifts Exposition in Moscow from September 25 to 28 (2007), and around 50 shop owners showed high interest on Cebu-made products specifically in gift, toys and housewares, fashion accessories and furniture, said Thaddeus Fernan, president of Cebu Flamingo.

Back-to-back with attending the Gifts Exposition, the team also joined a big tourism activity in Russia, and paid exposure visits to famous Russian tourism sites in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Russia business mission, which was held from September 21 to 29 (2007), was the first ever extensive private-sector led marketing blitz in order to take advantage of the wealthy Russian market as product consumer of Cebu-made items, and tourists to Cebu.

Some Russian buyers have already made arrangements with some exporters here, and even paid 50 percent downpayment for some products being displayed at the booth.

According to Fernan, he is now working with at least four prospective importers in Russia to distribute Cebu-made products to their country on a regular basis.

“Price is not an issue in Russia. It is just a matter of right channeling,” Fernan said.

Monera for his part, said the trade mission had given Cebuano exporters, including few exporter delegates from Dumaguete City, a good grasp of potential markets in Russia.

“There is a huge market in Russia only that we are hardly noticed as suppliers of their needs,” Monera said.

However, despite of the successful trade mission, Monera still had this suggestion for both the local exporters and the tourism stakeholders to study further the Russian market closely, adding that it is a good market to tap and watch for, with 150 million potential consumers.

In 2005, Philippine exports to Russia increased by 96 percent, reaching $36.34 million from $18.58 million in 2004.

NEDA okays Bohol-Cebu bridge
(http://http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20071029107162.html)

By JUNE S. BLANCO

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has approved in principle the construction of the Bohol-Cebu Multi-Access Friendship Bridge, it was announced by Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado.

This developed after Aumentado made representations with NEDA Director-General Augusto Santos who had promised to give his support to the project.

Aumentado told Santos that the Bohol Provincial Development Council (PDC) chaired by Gov. Erico Aumentado has endorsed to the regional development Council (RDC) the construction of a multi-access bridge that would finally link the province and Cebu.

This comes as a dream project for Aumentado who had earlier worked out the linking of the two provinces with a submarine cable to source out power from Tongonan Geothermal Plant in Leyte.

Noted for the realization of his dreams, this "dreamer" refers to his newest pet mega project as "3-in-1" because the single structure serves three purposes all at the same time.

The Bohol PDC had passed a resolution endorsing the project to the RDC. It will be called the Bohol-Cebu Multi-Access Friendship Bridge.

The resolution is expected to be referred to the RDC Infrastructure Committee, after which it would be endorsed by the RDC to the National Economic and Development Authority.

Under the PDC-RDC-NEDA paradigm, it is the NEDA that packages the approved projects for submission to funding institutions, like the Japan Bank for International Cooperation to (JBIC). Included in the project proposal are a feasibility study (FS) and an advanced detailed engineering design (ADED).

The capital-forming project with significant level of technical assistance required for the conduct of the necessary FS and ADED will link Getafe town in Bohol with Cordova in Mactan Island in Cebu.

Aumentado said it will be an 18-kilometer viaduct to include a 1.5-kilometer bridge across the deeper Olango channel.

As soon as it is completed, passenger and cargo traffic will be accelerated and as travel will henceforth be cheaper.

Aside from transport, the governor envisions power cables and main pipes alongside the bridge. The cables will bring additional power from Cebu to Bohol.

On top of being linked to Tongonan, Cebu is also linked to the Palimpinon Geothermal Power Plant in Valencia town in Oriental Negros.

Bohol needs the additional power especially with the operationalization of the Panglao Bohol International Airport in 2010, Aumentado said. The new airport also accelerates the demand for accommodations - and power - as tourist arrivals are expected to climb even faster.

The additional power augments the current 100 megawatts Leyte can supply and the locally generated power from mini hydroelectric and diesel plants in Bohol.

Bringing power from Cebu to Bohol through cables astride the bridge is cheaper than by submarine cables.

A study conducted by Kanematsu, the LBIP contractor and the consultant estimated the cost of submarine cable from Cordova to Getafe at R4.2 billion, as compared to cables on the bridge at only R1 billion, hence, there would be savings of R3.2 billion.

On the other hand, Cebu needs water from Bohol.

After satisfying the need for potable water of Inabanga and other towns, Bohol can start selling the commodity to Cebu through pipes also astride the bridge. This method is similarly cheaper than the "garden hose technology" that Brown and Root - a subsidiary of Halliburton, the biggest construction company in the United States of America, had proposed a few years back.

Meanwhile, Aumentado met with Socio-Economic Planning Secretary and NEDA Director General Augusto Santos last Monday. He said he got Santos’ commitment of support for the project.

Construction of the Friendship Bridge will jumpstart the construction of other bridges linking the Visayas islands under the super region project of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The project is proposed for funding by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The governor is confident of JBIC approval after he and Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura talked during the October 12 Presidential Visit to the Bayongan Dam in San Miguel for the inauguration of the Bohol Irrigation Project Stage 2 (BHIP2).

Katsura said the province is on the right track in the preparation of the comprehensive project profile for approval by the RDC

European businessmen now starting
to see Cebu as place of investment (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/10292007/economy01.html)

By Wilfredo Rodolfo III
Reporter

THE president of the French chamber of commerce in the Philippines said businessmen from the European country are now starting to see Cebu not just as a tourism destination, but as a place or investment.

Bernard Flour, president of Le Club, the French chamber of commerce in the Philippines, said his group wanted to make its presence felt in Cebu in anticipation of the expansion of existing French businesses and the arrival of additional French investments into the island.

“French businessmen have started to appreciate Cebu and its massive potential for investment,” Flour told the BusinessMirror.

There are some 300 French nationals in Cebu with around 100 medium-sized businesses, mostly involved in the export industry, Le Club administrator Henri Ortiz said.

Flour said French businessmen involved in information technology and exports, particularly in fashion accessories, are interested in looking at the potential of Cebu.

Instead of setting up a local chapter of Le Club to promote French culture and provide support for French businessmen, Flour said the group thought of creating social gatherings first to pave the way for more French businessmen and their local friends to meet.

The first event for the group is Soiree Beaujolais Cebu in November at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel, where wines from the French region of Beaujolais are opened simultaneously with the rest of the world for an evening of food, drinks and entertainment.

“We would like the people to see French culture and hopefully have more friends in Cebu,” Flour said.

The Soiree Beaujolais has been held in Manila for 15 years already.

Flour said the interest in Cebu was raised because of the efforts of local politicians to promote the island in Europe. He said Le Club recently facilitated a meeting in France between Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and top executives of France-based businesses.

“They see the ground-work being made by local leaders, and they see that Cebu will grow very fast in the next few years,” Flour said.

He said the Philippines is starting to become an investment destination next to the usual French favorites Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

Flour also said [B]Cebu must strengthen its marketing efforts to promote Cebu and nearby regions in France to lure tourists to come.

“It should not only be Cebu but the other regions as well. Cebu is already known as a tourism destination in France, and that must be sustained,” he said.

furthermore, the beach-side barangays of Mactan could be encouraged to build their own community tourist center, which aside from providing basic services to tourists such as guides, souvenirs, food etc. could also generate income for the community

^^ the government need not purchase the foreshore area (between the low tide and high tide) and the easement or salvage zone area, which is 3 meters for urban, 20 m for agricultural and 40 m for forest areas from the high tide portion of the coastline.

no one is allowed to reclaim a foreshore area without approval and permission from DENR. if they would reclaim it, they should secure an ECC (environmental compliance certificate) from DENR, subject to some conditions. here in santa fe (bantayan island), the mayor strictly enforces the easement or salvage zone (under PD 1067) with the cooperation of PAMB (protected areas management board of DENR). it is high time to strictly enforce this law to protect our coastal areas. the salvage zone is a public area that everyone should enjoy. it is called salvage zone because it is intended for distressed ship to dock on emergency anytime.

mmhhh, what i saw was that they removed all the cladding(s?) on two corners of the building and replaced them with new ones,., just goes to show how incompetent their engineers are., in fact, they did some modifications again, just like what they have been doing for the past few months since they formally opened it, in the interior of the building. :ohno:

...

there was even a time that we had to temporarily cut our classes due to an emergency. this actually happened during our summer classses. we thought there was fire, or a collapse in the building. it was just one of their generators that blew up, according to one of the teachers.. add to that the fact that we experienced several brownouts during our classes before. but none of these happened now,. again, it shows that their electricians are incompetent too.. :ohno:

That's punta Engaño...the photographer is in Hilton siguro when he took the shot. Basta the red roof with the blue balcony is owned by my landlady...Dyan kami sumakay when we went to Pandanon. The blue balcony is part of a diving school which rented a portion of the property...

i agree, she is by far, the best governor of cebu

....oy, mura'g dili gyud ko mo-agree.... are you forgetting Lito Osmena? ...He was the architect behind CEBOOM! ..without him, wala gyud ta'y intawn nga Cebu Business Park og Asiatown IT Park....it was him who sold these government assets: Club Filipino de Cebu and Lahug Airport to private entities which created a lot of debates from different political parties and civil societies during his term...look, what we have now! we're reaping countless developments...... and one more good thing, the provincial government still own part of the CBP and Asiatown IT Park.....wala siguro ta'y Waterfront Hotel kung dili niya....

^ True!!! In my opinion, she's the governor that brought the most progress and improvement to Cebu. Progress and improvement, not just in words, since we can see it everywhere we look all throughout Cebu.

...ang style ni Gwen nga idevelop ang government property and then have a joint venture, sus, style intawn na ni Lito Osmena....look, CPB and Asiatown...na-a pa gihapon share ang provincial government...

...what Cebu is reaping now is the works of Lito Osmena intawn mga people.... (basin pa niagi na si Pabling pagka governor...)
