Mangcao? I remember years ago there was this apartment building in Cebu City being developed/owned by a certain Engineer Mancao too that collapsed.
What is/are the cause? Bad building design or construction method?
Low quality material suppliers:cement, iron bars etc..?
Personally, I know a firm (led to brankruptcy) not paid by a large US firm at MEPZ caused by his relative who cheated on the cement quality....

Any of you guys knows about the impact of Peso high value against
the US dollar pertaining to constuction costs?
If the dollar went down by 20% against Peso, does it cost now 20%
more or it is always based on dollar amount calculation.

I think that is still under investigation. But I'll bet on poor structural design and construction methods.

Try this itinerary:

1st Day

Morning

- Magellan's Cross and Basilica Sto. Nino
- Museums (Casa Gorordo, Cathedral Museum, USC Museum)
- Cebu Capitol

Afternoon

- TOPS

Evening

- Night out at Mango and Cabanas (if you're here on a weekend)

2nd Day

Morning

- Shop for pasalubong (Otap, Dried Mangos, Danggit haha)

Afternoon

- Relax and stroll at malls

This itinerary reminds me of ed.tours.. ;)

Another great alternative to TOPS would be Mountain View Nature's Park still in Busay. (better amenities with breathtaking views..)

Then shopping for pasalubong is best done in Tabo-an Market, but beware it's a tourist trap. hehehe..

^^ Well, sort of. The last time I went to Taboan, I was ambushed by vendors selling all sorts of things, t-shirts, guitars and other souvenir items. Then souvenir shops have already sprouted nearby. And I can't forget this guy who got the attention of some tourists by selling snake oil... hehe..

Maribago? This would be in Mactan :okay:

Between Taboan and Carbon, Taboan is preferable. Carbon is chaotic. When you go to those areas (Carbon and Taboan) always watch out for your belongings. Don't flaunt your camera or celphone there, just be careful.

In this case since it's your first time, it would be better if you stay at Fuente-Capitol area since this is some kind of a tourist belt/district where cheap little hotels/inns/pension houses, restaurants, etc are just a few meters from each other.

The area is also an accessible point if you're going to sights such as Basilica Sto. Nino, Magellan's Cross, Museums, Cebu Capitol, Carbon-Taboan, and commercial establishments like malls, bars, etc.

You can just buy guitars (P800-P1,000), small guitar for souvenir (P75), souvenir Cebu keychains (P25), souvenir Cebu bracelets (P10), etc. at Magellan's Cross although Mactan is the choice if you prefer a higher quality Cebu-made Guitar.

Kung sa Davao pa, Fuente area is like the downtown area where Marco Polo Davao is.

Cheap inns/hotels/pension houses in Fuente-Capitol area:

Nice pic. It took me quite some time to realize where this is, until I noticed those yellow "things" covering the road/construction site for the flyover. Hala grabe na kaayo ang traffic diha, one of the worst. I have to admit, the inadequate road network can't keep up with the progress of that area. I'm now trying to avoid that road at all costs. “We will hold trade missions in our sister cities,” said Drilon.

The Manila-based Ilonggo business executive noted Cebu has been gaining ground after more than 20 years of massive economic promotions.

“In early ‘80s, Cebu was nothing. Then the Cebu Investment Promotion Council promoted it as an island in the Pacific which has since then attracted 314 foreign investments and generated 100,000 jobs,” Drilon said.

-Rex Drilon II (ILED)

-I have managed to talk to the group of businessmen (ILED-IBC) and one of their inspirations (and the one who aided them) was the people of Cebu, to establish a business-oriented and less political group (I think it they mentioned CIPC). The quote acknowledges Cebu's success in attracting investments. :)

Iloilo and Cebu did worked together in the business-level. :) Looks like our CvC trolls would have to swallow their pride. ;)

CEBU CITY — Aside from Filinvest Land, Inc., developers Ayala Land, Inc. and SM Prime Holdings, Inc. have also expressed interest in acquiring properties within the 300-hectare greenfield land reclaimed by the Cebu city government.

Ayala Land and SM Prime, however, were asked to revise their proposals because of some "objectionable items" while Filinvest has submitted its revised offer, which got a favorable response from the city government, said Cebu Investment Promotions Center Managing Director Joel Mari S. Yu.

"We evaluated all three proposals together. The difference is that Filinvest is a little more interested and more diligent than Ayala or SM. The three proposals don’t compete with each other. They are looking at different areas and are planning to undertake different projects," Mr. Yu said.

All three developers had offered to acquire close to 50 hectares each at the South Road Properties and embark on mixed-use developments, each with a retail component, Mr. Yu added.

But only SM will construct a mall. SM Prime President Hans T. Sy confirmed in an interview last year that his company wants to introduce at the South Road Properties a mixed-use development similar to the SM Central Business Park in Pasay.

Ayala will develop facilities for the information technology (IT) industry, while Filinvest plans to put up residential condominium buildings and recreational facilities, Mr. Yu said.

Mr. Yu said he was still waiting for the revised proposals from Ayala and SM even with reports quoting Cebu City Mayor Tomas R. Osmeña as having said that talks with Ayala and SM have been suspended, and that the Filinvest proposal was favorable.

"I’m under no instructions [from the mayor] not to accept other proposals. I’m still following up [the Ayala and SM proposals]. I just reminded them again today to submit [them]," he said.

The Cebu Investment Promotions Center is the marketing arm of the city government for the South Road Properties.

The Cebu city government plans to bid out the lots, which would comprise half of the total reclaimed area, upon approval by the Commission on Audit of the bidding process.
Marissa N. Fernan, SM Prime senior vice-president for mall operations, said she was not aware of preparations to submit a revised proposal to the city government.

"As far as we are concerned, the ball is in their hands," she said in a telephone interview.
Ayala Land officials declined to comment as the company will hold its stockholders’ meeting on April 2.

The deals, if closed, will allow the Cebu city government to service amortizations and interest payments for a ¥12-billion loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, which was used for reclamation project. - BusinessWorld

Cebu welcomes the new Shangri-La GM
By Mila C. Espina

SHARON Beigel and Lesley Tan, Shangri-La’s director of communications and assistant communications manager, respectively, prepared a series of media gatherings to introduce their new general manager, Raymond Bragg, who takes over Timothy Wright, who will head the Shangri-La Bangkok.

Bragg has 10 years of experience in the industry in many Shangri-La and Traders chains of hotel in Dalian, China, Penang, Fiji Islands and Myanmar, among others, where he had the singular opportunity to interact with heads of state, diplomats, multi-national industrialists.

He was commended for bringing Shangri-La into the realm of social responsibility, education and environment, which reaped awards for the Shangri-La in Dalian. He is married to a Singaporean and has an 11-year-old daughter who is enrolled in Cebu International School.

Over at lunch recently, Bragg talked about the expansion projects of Shangri-La Mactan. There would be additional rooms for high-end clientele, perhaps a bigger ballroom or convention site, more sports and swimming facilities and, of course, more soothing spa for fastidious, wellness enthusiasts.

There are many challenges to meet after being voted as Asia’s Best Hotel Brand for business and vacation in the 16th annual travel poll of Asiamoney magazine. The CHI, the Spa, was a first-runner up, along so many other trophies in services and facilities for seminars and conventions.

So, Mr. Bragg, there is much work to do!

TOUR GUIDING SEMINARS

The Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 was busy conducting two simultaneous tour-guiding seminars to prepare for an increase of tourism arrivals in Cebu. DOT 7 Director Patria Aurora Roa said the People’s Republic of China requested for someone to train tour guides who speak Mandarin to learn English as well, and learn about our cultural landmarks, and city and countryside tourist attractions.

Meantime, the Korean nationals took a similar tour guiding session in Philippine history and geography; accreditation; tourism thrusts and travel/tour related topics; arts, music, folklore; immigration, airport, customs policies and procedures; and festivals, among others. Resource speakers for the Korean seminar came from the academe and the industry managed by the Speechcom International.

LANGUAGE TRAINING CENTERS

Cebu is getting a windfall of language centers specifically designed to teach English, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Nippongo and Korean. We attended the launching of the Filipinas Ahora Mismo, the Radio Manila Project. It is an undertaking of the Asociacion de la Prenza de Cadiz and the Bureau of Broadcast Services of the Philippines. This cultural magazine covers an upbeat radio hour featuring updates on literature, history, education and current issues.

In Cebu, it is heard over Radyo ng Bayan, dyMR 576 Khz. This project brings us to the regular Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation, which undertakes research and cross-cultural studies.

The press had a pleasant time brushing up on some French words, cum the proper articulation and voicing. This was during lunch at Pino (and hosted by Michel and Amparito Lhuillier), where the Les Amis de la France French Cultural and Language Institute was introduced to us. It provides easy lessons in learning French for all age levels, from the graders to the professionals, and even housewives. The Center is located at Q Pavilion, and is open whole day and early evening.

Garments makers to boost sales

CEBU has maintained its position as a favored destination for the manufacturing of high-end garments.

With local garment exporters leveraging on the upscale market class, Cebu Garments Industries Association (CIGA) founding member Samson Tiu said Cebu is still the manufacturing and designing site for popular international apparel brands, driven by the highly skilled workers and designers in the garment industry.

Among the branded apparels manufactured in Cebu are Calvin Klein, Adidas, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Nautica, Abercrombie and Columbia Sports Wear, among others.

“There are still so many brands under ladies’ wear that are made in Cebu,” Tiu said in an interview with reporters recently.

In the past, some clothing lines of famous the ladies’ brand Victoria’s Secret were made in Cebu, but the company has already pulled-out its Cebu outsourcing operation, Tiu said.

However, he said Cebu’s garment industry remains competitive despite the challenges faced by the entire export sector, largely due to the appreciation of the peso against the dollar. Economists predict that the peso-dollar exchange might reach the P38-level by year-end.

Tiu said despite the volatility of the peso, a lot of sub-contractors of global brands are still operating at the Mactan Economic Zone, contrary also to the impression that subcontracting jobs for these kind of businesses has already been transferred to China.

However, he said compared to previous years, the sub-contracting works for garment manufacturing has declined.

While the local garment export players recognize China’s lead in capturing the bulk of the world’s offshore market for garment manufacturing, Cebu always has its edge in terms of the brand owners’ requirement for upscale quality and design, Tiu said.

“Quality workmanship is still our strength and unbreakable niche. We have to capitalize on this,” he added.

Vibrancy

Driven by this optimism, Tiu said CIGA is determined to revive the “vibrancy” of the organization and boost the confidence of the remaining garment exporters despite the looming problems faced by the country’s export industry.

Because the United States market is on a downturn brought about by its economic problems, he said CIGA will now intensify its presence in alternative markets, like Europe and India, where both countries are well-known to have a market of big spenders.

Tiu, who is also the general manager of Stitches and Wear Industries, also said that the Filipino’s “competitive spirit” has paved the way for a growing number of homegrown garment brands, like Penshoppe and Bench, among others, venturing into the international market.

He said the local market has been affected by globalization and other issues but there are businesses competing with the international brands and have managed to survive.

This is why Tiu said CIGA’s advocacy will center not only on attracting new members to the organization but also to promote among the garments industry players the value of being resilient amid the difficulties faced by the export sector and to help promote the Philippines as a niche for high-value manufacturing. Status of trans-axial project presented to PB
Tuesday, April 1, 2008

The Cebu Trans-Axial Development Project study group yesterday presented the status of the proposed multibillion project before the members of the Provincial Board during their regular session.

Vice Governor Gregorio Sanchez Jr., the PB presiding officer and the brains of the project, said that the provincial government will shoulder acquisition of the 760-hectare road right-of-way amounting between P400 million to P500 million.

For such move, Sanchez explained that the province is expected to earn at least P3 billion per year in real property taxes as a result of land conversion.

The 300-kilometer four-lane highway, seen to connect all municipalities of Cebu with Santander as the farthest point in the south and Daanbantayan in the north, would be undertaken through a build-operate-transfer scheme. Of the whole stretch, 220 kilometers cover existing roads that need improvement, while 80 kilometers will be newly built.

Sanchez said the provincial government has allocated P15 million for the preparation of this project and that, so far, around P12 million were already spent.

The highway would cut travel time by 40 percent. It will also disperse development to the countryside.

Further, the project will tap at least 120 rivers in Cebu as water sources. Windmill farms will be created to provide much needed power.

Aside from wind, water, economic zones and agro-environmental developments, the project also covers the establishments of five rest areas wherein restaurants and cafés will be put up. Sites eyed are Bagakay in Sogod; Santican in Danao City; Cantabaco in Toledo City; Basak in Sibonga; and Nug-as in Alcoy.

Twelve toll fee plazas will be constructed and a 1.6-kilometer tunnel will be built in Tungalub, Oslob.

Dubai-based developer to build 450-meter tower at Kawit Point
April 1, 2008

CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña recently inked a deal with Dubai-based developer, Al Nakheel Properties, early this afternoon at the Waterfront Lahug International Convention Center during a low-key international tourism and economic conference sponsored by the Cebu City Government.

The surprise deal came up after lunch when Mayor Osmeña together with representatives from Nakheel Properties revealed a master-plan for the development of the seaside area and a large portion of the SRP after signing a deal with the firm. This includes Kawit Point, which would form the focal point of a sprawling modern business district, with a 450-meter observation tower standing on the former island.

The tower, which would be known as the Sugbo Tower, promises to be a signature icon not only of the city but the island of Cebu as well, as it is envisioned to become the tallest free-standing structure in the country. Initial designs of the tower reveal that it would have at least three rotating globular observation platforms placed at different levels.

Aside from the SRP and Kawit Point developments, Al Nakheel Properties also revealed other future projects in Cebu and nearby Bohol Province, which include a chain of man-made islands off the coast of Mactan and Olango Islands, and a 6-star resort at Panglao Island.

Cebu City’s barangay justice system receives recognition
Cebu Daily News
First Posted 13:28:00 04/01/2008

The Lupon Tagapamayapa of Cebu City received the Gawad Galing Pook Award for outstanding local governance.

The Cebu City government was among the top 10 winners of the Gawad Galing Pook award during the awarding rites held in Malacañang on February 28.

The city was cited for strengthening its Lupon Tagapamayapa (Barangay Justice System) through the conduct of a series of capability-building seminars for 800 Lupon members on the various laws and rules and regulations of the local government code on dispute settlement and other related laws to settle conflict and troubles at the barangay (village) level.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña congratulated Councilor Edgardo Labella for conducting the seminars for the Lupon mediators from the city’s 80 barangays.

The city was chosen from among 19 finalists from a total of 150 entries all over the country that participated in the search.

In his presentation before a panel of judges, Councilor Labella traced the history of Cebu City’s Lupon project back to July 2003 as the first in the country that implemented the barangay justice system.

Labella also said the Cebu City Lupon settled 26,694 of the 37,063 cases at the barangay level.

Dr. Encarnacion Dano, president of the Liga ng mga Lupong Tagapamayapa, was elated over the mayor’s recognition of their role in promoting peace at the barangays.

She said they still need a lot of trainings that will improve their capability to mediate and resolve conflicts at the barangays.

Fashion apparel firm explores direct selling
Cebu Daily News
First Posted 14:06:00 04/01/2008

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Golden ABC Inc., which operates the fashion apparel brand Penshoppe and Oxygen, will open another company or a subsidiary this week offering a new line of fashion products through a direct selling network.

Bernie H. Liu, chief executive officer of Golden ABC, Inc., said the new direct selling subsidiary, Red Logo Lifestyle Inc., will cater to another market segment such as homeowners and housewives.

“We're still offering clothing and fashion products but through a different distribution channel (direct selling) because we want to cater to wider markets,” he said.

Golden ABC, Inc. also operates Forme, which caters mostly to women, and Memo which targets mobile young professionals. Penshoppe, which is the company's flagship brand caters to the youth while Oxygen's market covers also the young professionals.

Asked if he did not see fierce competition among direct selling brands which have carved names in the industry, Liu said, “This is a different strategy, different brands. Red Logo will target the middle class market.”

He said 70 to 80 percent of these products will be domestically sourced, while 20 to 30 percent are imported.

Liu said the company has 400 outlets nationwide, with 60 percent of these stores carrying Penshoppe.

With an expected 20-percent growth rate this year, Liu said the company also plans to open 30 to 40 stores this year.

“A lot of the expansion will happen in the provinces because they offer huge opportunities for expansion. We have invested in infrastructure there. Manila is already too crowded for retail,” he said.

Liu said they are cautious in expanding internationally noting that “all international expansions are franchisees because these are not our territory.”

At present, Penshoppe has three stores in China. Products carrying the brand are also sold in Saudi Arabia.

Negotiations to open stores in countries in the Middle East and Asia such as Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam are also being conducted, said Liu.

“We are carrying Penshoppe in our international expansion because it’s our more mature and well-known brand. The other brands can follow soon,” he said.

The entrepreneur also noted the big contribution of tourism in the growth of retail sector.

“Tourism and retail are very inter-related. Tourists eat, stay in hotels and shop. We hope to institute something like Hong Kong's 'Sale Hong Kong' every August and make Philippines an attractive destination for foreigners to shop,” he said.

He also said that remittances from overseas Filipino workers will fuel the industry further despite the weak dollar. /Reporter Cris Evert B. Lato

Red Ribbon unravels a more beautiful store in Cebu City

from Sunstar: HERE (http://sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/04/02/life/red.ribbon.unravels.a.more.beautiful.store.in.cebu.city.html)

RED Ribbon Bakeshop Inc. (RRBI), the country’s fastest-growing bakeshop chain, unleashes the newly-renovated Red Ribbon SM City Cebu.

A simple blessing kicked-off the first day of operation of the more beautiful store.

“We are very happy to present to the Cebuanos a more beautiful Red Ribbon SM Cebu store. This store, which has been serving great-tasting cakes, bread and pastries for nearly 14 years now, continues to live its promise of making celebrations more beautiful,” shares Michelle Leslie K. Llanos, RRBI VisMin commissary and operations head.

“As we bake our products fresh everyday in the commissary, and as we serve these to our customers with a warm and friendly service, we commit to offer a delightful experience that’s worth your time, effort, money, friendship and loyalty,” Llanos adds.

Now with a more vibrant ambiance, Red Ribbon SM City Cebu bears the elements of the new store look, spearheaded by a new logo that embodies a more contemporary and dynamic brand that stands for high quality cakes for special celebrations. The new logo uses a strong red ribbon and a flowing font style.

The store is also equipped with a breadcart that allows customers to pick and choose the product they like without ordering through the counter. Further accentuating the store is its new set of furniture that includes egg-shaped tables, deluxe chairs and club chairs.

Like before, Red Ribbon SM City Cebu remains to be a Cakes By Design center. It is, so far, the only specialized store in the entire Cebu catering to the demands for Red Ribbon’s newest line of decorated cakes, which are Cakes By Design or CBD. It also offers “While You Wait” photocakes. Customers can choose from a wide array of greeting photocake designs or personalize their own cakes using original artworks or photos of the celebrator. And the cakes are made while they wait.

As a CBD center, it is equipped with user-friendly and beautifully-printed catalogues plus a 32-inch LCD screen where customers can view an E-catalogue, making cake selection a more interesting experience.

To date, five Red Ribbon stores: SM City, Ayala Center, Gaisano Country Mall, Cocomall, and Foodasavers Mart Consolacion are situated in Cebu. There are also six booths with two at Gaisano Mactan and one each at Gaisano Fiesta Mall Tabunok, JY Square Mall, Robinson’s Place, and Elizabeth Mall.

Ricky Jose said that Cebu is the best model for heritage conservation because of an active heritage group and also because of the establishment of the Cebuano Studies Center, the first of its kind when it was established.

Next in line daw would be Pampanga and Batangas.

Hehehe, bitaw bernzzz.. :D :D :D

I don't know who first started who but heritage conservation is a very recent activity here in Iloilo. Actually, it has quite meet its target already of creating heritage awareness amongst the Ilonggo people.

Cebuano Studies Center was established on what year? I don't know when UP established Centre for West Visayan Studies and Leyte-Samar Heritage Centre. Anyway, I think Sir Pascual of the Department of Historyof USC would be coordinating with these centres, maybe there's a plan for a Visayan Studies Centre.

But anyway, we here in Iloilo would be supporting your moves there in Cebu regarding the Oslob incident. ICCHCC was also informed by the tragic fire there.

And regarding the trolls, hahay...they have to see the world in a different persepctive. Nobody's superior to anyone. And I mean it applies to us all. :D

what about accenture, xlibris, and supportsave? nganong wa man sila naapil?

^ Does ePerformax also count? Heard that agents there are paid a yummy 30k per month. :)

I agree. Support Save has more number of seats than UK Link.

CORRECT! AGREE!

The Big 2 who are not on the list!

1. Accenture - The only IT and BPO company who advertise in national TV. They even outsource some of their accounts to Sykes Cebu, Convergys Manila, Teletech Cebu and Cainta, and Teleperformance Bacolod. They are that big that they outsource the outsource. Weird but true! Source? Call those call centers and ask if they have an Accenture account? And the answer is yes!

2. Wipro - Accenture's number 1 competitor in terms of IT and BPO. The biggest IT company and 3rd largest BPO in India. The only Indian BPO to be included in the TOP 10 global outsource provider's list conducted by IAOP for the 100 global outsourcing list of 2006. Source? www.wipro.com

Other Call centers in Cebu who are not on the list!

ePerformax in Lahug.
SupportSave in Fuente.
123Ten in i2 IT park.
Xlibris in Mandaue.
SourceHub in Skyrise IT park.
Cordia in i1 IT park.
iComm in Skyrise IT park.
Lear Corporation in MEPZ 1 are hiring call center agents for their CS dept., same with on the list TERADYNE in MEPZ 2 which is not really a BPO company but do have call center for their CS dept., like DELL, HSBC, HP and any other company who has a CS dept. for their customer's concerns and complains.

I don't know which is proper but I got these inputs from the "old ones."

They said that in Europe, particularly in Italy, there's this very old church but when you go inside, there's a new church building. I don't know what he meant by that but the idea that came to my mind is a shell of an old building with a new structure inside.

Another idea is to build a new church beside the old one and just preserved the old church ruins as an attraction.

Well of course the simplest idea would be to just restore the old church, that is, to just replace the trusses and the roof but the question is if the structure is still sound considering that it was exposed to the fire.

There are parts of the church that look like a "room" because it is hidden from the open area and yet everything inside it was burned. You can just imagine how the entire structure was really literally cooked from every nook and corner.

CEBU, Philippines--With the expansion of its operations in Cebu to include business process outsourcing (BPO) services, Accenture has cited the Philippines as the "key differentiator" for the company.

"Global businesses and clients need a company to represent them in all parts of the world and presently, Accenture is the most credible provider in the Philippines," Accenture Delivery Center Network for BPO Global managing director Pankaj Vaish said in an interview.

Accenture has expanded its Cebu operations by offering BPO services in addition to application management services and systems development. Starting with the Accenture Customer Contact BPO Service, the Accenture Delivery Center in Cebu began offering BPO services last week with one client.

Vaish said Accenture is not looking for a specific number of clients, but is instead "focusing on growth and the variety of services offered."

"The key to growth and variety of services offered are our people," said Accenture Philippines BPO Delivery Center senior executive and country lead Yogesh Malhotra in his presentation. "$770 billion was invested in talent in the Philippines."

He also cited the Philippine advantage since a great majority of Filipinos speak the English language well.

The Accenture executives, however, declined to reveal the total amount invested on the expansion of the company's services in Cebu.

Accenture Philippines now has about 15, 000 employees, most of whom are based in Manila. With the expansion to BPO services, the Accenture Delivery Center in Cebu is now looking at roughly 500 seats for employment.

Accenture has been in the country since 1985.

In the interview, Vaish said Philippine politics does not affect their business,

"Accenture has been around for over 20 years now and we are still expanding; we are still rapidly growing," he said.

I was browsing the travel guides in National Bookstore and came upon this amazing coffee table type book: Guide to Central Visayas with a lot of mouthwatering pics of Cebu, Bohol, Dumaguete, Siquijor. The hardbound edition costs 995, while the softbound costs 850. It's updated (year 2008 and the photos are quite recent), and also features some beautiful pics of the Oslob church when it was still intact.

Anyway, here are some pics of Camotes (taken with a camera phone) The beach is just amazing! Truly one of Cebu's hidden gems. Tourism hasn't devoured the island.... yet, but I've spotted some Koreans (or were they Japanese, haha).

Firm expands Cebu unit (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/04/03/bus/firm.expands.cebu.unit.html)
Sun.Star
Thursday, April 03, 2008

A GLOBAL outsourcing and consulting firm has expanded its Cebu operations to include customer contact center services.

The customer contact center service arm of Accenture, a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company, in Cebu can accommodate up to 500 employees.

The customer contact center service is part of Accenture’s expansion plans in Cebu, said Pankaj Vaish, managing director of the company’s delivery center network for business process outsourcing.

Vaish told a press conference yesterday that Accenture’s future direction would involve growth in the range of services it offers to clients.

He said the firm chose to expand in Cebu because of the availability of “highly-skilled” and “competent” labor, telecommunications infrastructure and government support.

He said Accenture is “very committed” to grow in Cebu. “Our focus now (is to grow) Cebu; (after we have maximized growth potentials here) and maybe will look for other areas (to expand to),” he added.

Accenture officials said they are not worried about shortage of talent for its new service arm.

Yogesh Mahotra, senior executive and country lead of Accenture Philippines BPO delivery center, said the company is working closely with the academe in Metro Manila—where the firm has six delivery centers—and the government for its work force requirements.

He said Accenture, which opened its Cebu delivery center in August 2007, is planning to do the same in Cebu.

While the BPO sector is known for high turnover of employees, Mahotra expressed confidence that Accenture personnel would opt to stay in the company.

He pointed out that Accenture has been named “best employer” in the Philippines and is among the top 10 employers in India.

Aside from stock options, Accenture provides regular trainings to its employees and the opportunity to build up careers in other parts of the company’s network in 49 countries.

Vaish also expressed confidence in the company’s continued growth despite the weakening of the US dollar and the peso’s appreciation.

“We are a very diversified company…we do not have a huge dependence on one location. (Thus) we are able to balance the difference in currency movements,” he said, adding that the US accounts for less than half of the company’s revenue source. (LAP)

IT related investments seen to surge in Cebu (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=20080403181)
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman
Friday, April 4, 2008

With the pro-active environment to promote Information and Communication Technology (ICT) related investments in Cebu, the province is expected to attract top-notch ICT investments especially in research and development (R&D) operations in the next few years.

Cebu Investment and Promotions Center (CIPC) managing director Joel Mari S. Yu said that Cebu is not already facing difficulties in accommodating ICT or Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) investors, as the problem of office buildings, human resource capability have been slowly addressed.

The good relationship between the academe and the industry players, including the Local Government Units (LGUs) in Cebu in pushing the Information Technology (IT) industry here, is making the province as emerging choice of the multinational IT companies.

Yu said that Cebu had been able to make series of "breakthroughs" in the IT sector, attracting big names in the industry to establish operations here, because of the pro-active players, and strong support from multi-sectoral members, including the LGU executives, such as Accenture, Wipro, among others.

In the next one or two years, Cebu will be able to further attract bigger names in the world's IT sector, setting up their operations here, especially for research and development works, and software development.

In the past, Cebu struggled to compete with other attractive locations especially for Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs), because of availability of ready-for-occupancy building capacities, now, in the span of one or two years, prime movers in the industry worked together to provide solution of the problem.

"We don't have problems in accommodating the upcoming investors in IT or other BPO investments," Yu said adding that aside from the Cebu Asia Town IT Park, there is also a number projects that have been declared by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) as IT Park.

Besides, also more buildings are applying for IT accreditations, in order to province tax incentives for its occupants which are into IT related business, or BPO.

The creation of Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedfit), has also provide major help in solving the brain drain problem for Cebu, because of its active move to work closely with the academe.

According to Yu, Cebu has a big potential to achieve its goal of becoming "Innovation Island," capitalizing on the good pool of software developers, and IT engineers being produced by Cebu's universities every year.

With this, he said Cebu is very capable to generate at least US$255 million in revenues only from the BPO sector in the next two years.

For his part, Cedfit executive director Bonifacio D. Belen said that large chunk of the BPO revenue target will be contributed by the software development sector.

At present, Cebu's software development industry is generating about US$60 million a year.

Cebu is expected to host about 20 percent of the BPO investment target of the Philippines by 2010.

The national government is targeting to generate a total of US$12.99 billion, from BPO software industry alone, Belen said Cebu is seen to get US$255 million of this target.

According to Belen, Cebu's edge in the BPO sector is the software development component, and that the province aims to increase its pool of good IT geeks, or software engineers, from the present 3,000 to 15,000 in the next few years.

This is to further strengthen Cebu's attractiveness to research and development (R&D) investments in ICT, he said.

Aside from the strong software development advantage of Cebu, the province is also attractive in other services under the BPO sector, such as customer care, back office, medical and legal transcription, animation, among others.

With active stance of Cebu to increase its pool of software developers, in partnership with the academe, and private sector, Belen said the number of software developers here have grown from 1,000 in 2003 to 3,276 in 2007.

City Council okays sked of SRP lot prices (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/04/04/news/city.council.okays.sked.of.srp.lot.prices.html)
Sun.Star Cebu
Friday, April 04, 2008

THE Cebu City Council approved last Wednesday the minimum floor price for the South Road Properties (SRP) lots as proposed by the mayor, including other conditions for the sale or lease of the 290-hectare facility.

Based on Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s memorandum, the lots will be sold at P8,000 to P15,000 depending on the location. The sale, though, could yield more for the City depending on the outcome of the bidding.

The sale offer for lots on Pond F, which makes up the entire 1.4-kilometer stretch facing the sea, is P15,000 per square meter.

The 17-hectare Pond F alone can earn P2.5 billion for the City even if it is sold for the minimum floor price.

As specified by the mayor, the City will not entertain lease proposals for one or two years, and only Kawit Island will be leased to investors.

For lots located within 80 meters from both sides of the South Coastal Road and the Mambaling access road, the minimum floor price stands at P11,000 per square meter. These lots are considered prime properties.

All other lots outside Pond F and the 80-meter area from the coastal and access roads are considered non-prime properties and will be sold for a minimum price of P8,000 per square meter.

The Council confirmed the floor prices and other conditions of the sale of the SRP lots in a resolution it approved last Wednesday.

In his news conference last Wednesday, Osmeña said he changed his mind and decided not to deal with real estate brokers in the early stages of the sale of the SRP.

“We’re not working with brokers at this point. We’re willing to but I feel it’s not right to do it at the early part. It’s not safe because this project will go through a bidding,” he told reporters.

Osmeña fears the commission for brokers would affect the bid price of the lots, or worse, cause legal problems for the City Government.

He said the giving of commissions and whether or not it should be added to the price of the lots might not be approved by the Commission on Audit (COA).

“We want to avoid legal problems that can lock up the SRP in court, unless the COA will give a very clear stand on this. It’s okay to give brokers a commission as long as it will not affect the price of the bid,” Osmeña added. (LCR)

Pagcor looking for new
site for project’s phase 2 (http://businessmirror.com.ph/0404&052008/economy02.html)

By Max V. de Leon
Reporter

JUST fresh from approving four proposals for the envisioned $10-billion Bagong Nayong Pilipino-Manila Bay Integrated City, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) announced that it is now shopping around for another site that will house the second phase of the project.

Efraim Genuino, Pagcor chairman and CEO, said Phase 2 of the project will be located outside Metro Manila, with Cebu as one of the prime candidates.

“We are already discussing the second phase and we have identified possible areas,” Genuino said.

He said as much as Pagcor wants to entertain more proposals from prospective investors for the Manila Bay Integrated City, the 90-hectare reclaimed area dedicated for this gaming-cum-entertainment resort will already be used up by the initial four project proponents.

“We are studying the market if there is a need to accept more proposals. But the problem is, there is no more space available there, so we are now discussing the second phase,” Genuino told reporters at the sidelines of the ongoing 2008 Asia’s Gaming and Entertainment plus Leisure Expo (Asia’s Gem) at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila.

Pagcor announced it has accepted the project proposals of Japan’s Aruze Corp., Genting Berhad of Malaysia, SM Investments Corp. and Australia’s Bloombery Investments Ltd. with average investments of $2 billion to $3 billion each.

Azure Corp., a major stockholder of Wynn Resorts and a renowned manufacturer of gaming machines, proposed the development of the Okada Resort Manila Bay.

It will be an integrated casino resort with 2,000 standard rooms and 300 VIP suites. Its main features would be an oceanarium targeted to be the world’s largest, theaters and a giant Ferris wheel similar to the London Eye and will be called the “Manila Eye.”

Genting Berhard, with its partners Star Cruises and Alliance Global Group Inc., is planning to build several hotels with a minimum capacity of 2,000 rooms and a world-class theme park. The company owns and operates the Genting Highlands Resort in Malaysia.

SM Investments Corp. proposed to put up a gaming facility in partnership with Asia-Pacific Gaming of Australia, and a major luxury hotel to be managed by Radisson Hotels & Resorts at the Mall of Asia Complex side of the Manila Bay Integrated City.

Bloombery Investments Ltd., on the other hand, is planning to build three luxury hotels with a total capacity of 1,500 rooms, with high-end retail shops, celebrity-themed dining, and a major entertainment and sports center.

The four groups had the ceremonial groundbreaking Thursday, and they are set to begin actual development by the third quarter of the year, Genuino said.

Meanwhile, Genuino said Pagcor is poised to increase its revenues this year by at least 11 percent to P30 billion from P27 billion last year.

Gaming consultant Dean Macomber, president of Macomber International, said in his presentation at the Asia’s Gem that the Philippines’ gaming industry can achieve revenues of up to $1.08 billion in 2010 and $1.8 billion by 2013.

Macomber said these numbers will increase further once the effects of the Manila Bay Integrated City kick in.

Currently, Macomber said the country’s gaming revenue is estimated at only $800 million, with the big majority coming from local players at $613 million.

He said although the Philippines is attracting up to 3 million foreign tourists per year, most are coming in not only to gamble but also to do business or just relax in the resorts.

“That is one good reason why Pagcor wants this integrated resort to create that interest,” Macomber said.

Once the country has offered a higher quality of gaming and entertainment experience to foreigners, the deeper it can penetrate the market, he said.

Once fully operational—the earliest by 2010—the integrated resort facility is seen to increase the country’s gaming revenues by at least 30 percent.

It is also expected to boost foreign tourist arrivals by up to 3 million individuals annually and generate over 250,000 fresh jobs.

Cebu center of excellence of SMEs – bank official
Cebu Daily News
First Posted 12:08:00 04/04/2008

A DEVELOPMENT bank has recognized Cebu as center of excellence of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country after seeing the presence of world-class exporters in the province.

“Discriminating consumers all over the world are known to say, 'if it originates in Cebu, it must be really good.' We see a lot of world-class exporters coming here. We have many of them as our clients and we feel very good in partnering with them,” said Jesus P. Tambunting, chairman and chief executive officer of Planters Development Bank (Plantersbank).

Plantersbank is a development bank whose goal is to help SMEs in developing their businesses.

Small enterprises are companies that have assets between P3 million to P15 million while medium enterprises have assets between P15 million to P100 million.

Tambunting said that there are many success stories of Cebu entrepreneurs, whose small businesses started small grew.

He cited as example Bernie Liu, the owner of Golden ABC, the firm that manufactures Penshoppe and Oxygen clothing apparel.

“Our institution has stood with the Cebuano entrepreneurs during the early phase of export-driven expansion through the period of adjustments to the globalization and the economic successes in the present,” Tambunting said.

“By providing services that enable our customers to grow profitable enterprises, we contribute to the creation of new jobs, the improvement of family income, greater social mobility and better quality of life,” he said in his speech yesterday during the SME Speakers Series Nationwide Tour.

The SME Speakers Series brings noted motivational public speakers from the country to encourage and inspire entrepreneurs to improve and sustain businesses.

Francis J. Kong, co-founder of jeans brand, Company B, was yesterday's speaker who spoke about leading businesses in the difficult times.

Tambunting said the presence of well-managed and successful SMEs in Cebu is one of the reasons why they opened the SME Industrial Park inside an economic zone (ecozone) in Naga City, Cebu.

“For the first time, privileges and incentives accrued to locators, which are big companies, will be given to SMEs. The industrial park is now allowing SMEs to become locators and enjoy privileges, which only big locators before can enjoy,” Tambunting said.

SMEs locating inside the ecozone will enjoy tax exemption between four to eight years and duty-free in the import of raw materials, among others.

Tambunting said Plantersbank has signed an agreement with a local company to help them in encouraging SMES to put up offices in the industrial park.

At present, 12 SMEs have committed to open offices inside the ecozone. /Reporter Cris Evert B. Lato

Paradise Not Lost

While other cities that have benefited from global business change, often influenced by the many that arrive seeking opportunity; Cebu does not. It hasn't for almost 500 years, and it has seen all sorts of people come; from Europeans, Americans, Chinese, Japanese and to the current influx of migrant Koreans. Other cities are shaped by its settlers; Cebu changes those who settle in it, making them adapt to its idyllic and laid back lifestyle in an otherwise busy urban jungle. Cebu makes a settler accept paradise as it is, as it remains firm in preserving what makes it one of the best places to live in.

...timing kaayo ang above article sa post nako today...

...when I had a breakfast yesterday with my boss at Hotel Intercontinental here in Riyadh, I saw a group of Koreans, also having breakfast...they were chatting very loudly and one of their guides is a pinoy... the pinoy guide gamely told one of the Koreans...."you should also visit the Philippines..."...i saw the face of the pinoy who was really surprised when the Korean answered: ...."i've been to Baguio, Boracay, Palawan and Davao but I don't know why I LOVE CEBU!...i really love CEBU!" .....honestly, mura gyud ko'g kahilakon gahapon sa akong nadunggan...i did not expect to hear that...hehhehe!

^^ Yeah, the Koreans love Cebu for reasons I cannot fathom yet. Nevertheless, no one can deny their extremely large presence here in Cebu. I managed to talk to some of the Koreans here in Cebu (usually in resorts, hotels and restaurants), and they found the city charming, like a mix of old and new, modern and traditional. I coudn't agree more. Having returned to the city after more than 10 years, I'm falling in love with Cebu all over again. It's charming, unique and even romantic, but still the most romantic city I've ever been to in the Phils, has got to be Iloilo.. hehe..

^^ Ask me what I like about Cebu...its an urban area who never lost its rustic and laidback charm. An element that is ideal for business and leisure within a few kilometers. IMO, ideal for a good and wholesome growth of self and society.

And Koreans really love to bask under the sun and the benign tropical climate that Cebu has.

thats why we call this thread Cebu: The Metropolis and Province. The Island of Cebu can be classified as Urban and Rural in terms of lifestyle. If youre talking about Metro Cebu, Cebu City in particular, of course you cant feel of a Probinsyano living but if youre talking about Cebu province, there you can feel the Probinsyano living

the term "probinsyano" that is being used to describe the lifestyle in a city setting can be misinterpreted. based on what i can imagine, a probinsyano lifestyle is to wake up every morning with a rooster crowing, carabao doing the stuff in the rice fields, tuba drinking session or siesta in the afternoon, bedtime at 8pm. hehehe

Malaysian firm proposes Cebu Internet connection (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Local%20News&p=52&type=2&sec=70&aid=20080406194)
The Freeman
Monday, April 7, 2008

Prosat Technologies in Malaysia has proposed for a joint venture with the Cebu provincial government for the establishment of an Internet connection, using WiMAX technology, covering the entire province.

Andre Foresti, Prosat chief executive officer and Stephen Chia, chief operating officer, visited Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and presented to the Provincial Economic Enterprise Council their proposal for a high-speed broadband wireless network infrastructure for the province.

The economic enterprise council has reportedly started reviewing the proposal. If this is approved, even remote barangays will be able to get Internet connections, the officials said.

“Our vision is to develop an effective broadband wireless telecommunications facility to support government and industries, based on open global standards,” said Chia.

Cesar Atienza, Capitol consultant on information technology, said the proposal came at an opportune time when the province needs to provide high schools with Internet connection.

So far, only 42 percent of high schools in the province have been provided, with the Capitol distributing at least 10 computers to every school as part of its program to bring information and communication technology to the municipalities.

“Existing Internet service providers are still looking for commercial viability. They won’t go beyond the Poblacion, because doing so has no attractive commercial returns and they could not survive,” said Atienza.

Atienza said the two Prosat top executives visited Cebu last year for the ICT summit, and was “encouraged by what the governor told them.” The company has 20 years of experience in information technology, and has established such projects in America, Europe, and Asia, he said.

WiMAX, or the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access.

WiMAX is described as “a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL.”

According to Wikipedia, an on-line dictionary, the bandwidth and reach of WiMAX make it suitable for the following potential applications: Connecting Wi-Fi hotspots with each other and to other parts of the Internet; providing a wireless alternative to cable and DSL for last mile broadband access; and providing high-speed data and telecommunications services, among others. — Mitchelle L. unsaon pag post dinhi ug mga pics... hehehe... kapoy basa sa procedure

Use the IMG code. Example:

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii73/ashen_cordonata/imgcode.jpg

Isulod ang image, photo URL inside the IMG codes, nga akong gi-highlight.. But you need to upload your images first to a site such as photobucket, imageshack, flickr, etc..

That building.. white elephant no more??? I hope so. Ang kanang wires, it's a characteristic of Philippine cities (and other Asian cities), eyesore kaayo.. but even Tokyo is plagued with a neverending mess of wires.

Naa kay idea pila ang cottage for overnight sa BasDaku sa Moalboal?

Was it P600?

@arnold
i did not inquire about their cottage for overnight use. but from my observation, i think the price range is from P600 to P800.

i saw this ad of another resort in bas daku. it's called Tanon Breeze. Their rooms are P2000 per day (overnight stay) good for 4 persons. That is if you want a little more privacy. 'Coz the ones in Bas Daku are not. But of course there are still plenty there to choose from.

The most challenging spiral ramp so far would be the one in Robinsons. It's very narrow and steep man gud. Kelangan first gear jud ka with your headlights turned ON.

SM's spiral ramp, even the inner lane, is not much challenging and kuyaw.. Hehe

i've been watching happyslip for quite a time already and her videos are just hilarious. maayo jud siya mu.act. Anyway, her video about Cebu is focused on the resorts and i guess 90% of it is in Mactan. Too bad CBP, and other parts of uptown Cebu City are not seen. Nice pud coz naay comedy gamay, gi.apil niya tanan characters sa iyang previous nga vids. ;)
