PGMA opens SEAG in Cebu
Festive, colorful ceremonies scheduled this afternoon

CEBU CITY — Cebu will be in a festive mood today as President Arroyo leads the welcome rites for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) at the Cebu City Sports Center here.

A parade of nations at 4 p.m. will usher in the opening ceremonies on Osmeña Blvd. Each delegation will be accompanied by school dance troupes wearing the national costumes of the countries while dancing to the Sinulog beat.

Cebu is host to six events, including the first-ever dancesport competition. Besides dancesport, which will be held at the Waterfront Hotel, Cebu will also be the site of the competitions in sepak takraw (San Carlos gym), pencak silat (Cebu Coliseum), judo and karatedo (Mandaue Sports Center), and mountain bike (Danao City).

"We are done with all the groundwork for the opening rites presentation," Cebu SEAG Organizing Committee (CebuSoc) chairman Jonathan Guardo said. "We are all set for the SEA Games. Everything has been taken care off."

CebuSoc has appropriated R2.5 million just for the opening of the games alone that is expected to attract around 20,000 viewers.

"We intend to make the SEA Games opening a historical occasion for every Cebuano. It will definitely be worthwhile experience to look forward to," Guardo said.

Cheryl Ouano, CebuSoc vice chairman and Mandaue City Sports Commission head, said Mandaue City, which hosts two events, will present its colorful Mantawi Festival. She said that they have been practicing their production number where they aim to impart to other ASEAN countries the city’s cheerful history.

Aside from Mantawi, the opening ceremony will also feature the Sinanggiyaw of Dumanjog, Karansa of Danao City, Palawod of Bantayan Island, and the winners of the 2005 Sinulog Festival.

The ceremony will start with parade of athletes from the 11 participating countries to be augmented by dancers wearing the respective national costumes of participating nations.

The affair will be highlighted by a 10-minute fireworks display, said Guardo.

Athletes from Brunei Darussalam will be accompanied by Abellana National School dancers, Cebu Normal University for Cambodia, University of Southern Philippines for Indonesia, Cebu Institute of Technology for Laos, University of Cebu for Malaysia, University of San Carlos for the Philippines, Cebu State College of Science and Technology for Myanmar, Southwestern University for Thailand, University of the Visayas for Timor Leste, University of San JoseRecoletos for Singapore, and Cebu Doctor’s University for Vietnam.

"We are very grateful for the participation of the various universities. Their creative inputs contributed big to the staging of the SEAG opening presentation. We hope that everything will run smoothly," said Guardo.

Also expected to grace the ceremony are First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, Philippine Olympic Committee president and Philippine SEAG Organizing Committee CEO Jose "Peping" Cojuangco, Philippine Sports Commission chairman William "Butch" Ramirez, and the national sports association heads of the six sports events that will be held in Cebu and Mandaue.

Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia, Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña, Mandaue City Mayor Teddy Ouano, and Danao City Mayor Ramonito Durano will also be in attendance.

Unfortunately, PGMA can't attend so she sent FG Mike Arroyo as her proxy.

bay sugbuanon, do you have the plan of the proposed soccer field of USC?

by the way, the Philippines finally notch a win in SEA games football since 1991 after they beat Cambodia 4-2... It was superb.. hope football could gain popularity here. It was shown in NBN. Their next game is against Malaysia and a win could secure them a semi-final seat. Please help support and promote football!!!!

@slerz yeah those are highrise buildings.. their plan was to construct 1 building every year starting 2002, but so far only two building were constructed (CAFA and the Nursing bldg) . they'll be constructing a building for every department. they're even planning of putting up a hotel for the HRM students. the old engineering bldg., the one fronting the highway, will be converted into a commercial establishment maybe a mall. right now, the architecture dept. is already making the blueprints for a football stadium/field and a new modern library. by 2035, USC will be like a city within a city.

@tyronne sepak takraw will be held in USC Main, in downtown area. i think tickets will only be 30 or 20 pesos.

good news: i've read just today from an architectural magazine which featured arch't. jose siao ling (the arch't. of SM baguio and almost all SM's in Luzon). it featured some of his new projects and among them is a building that will be constructed in Cebu Business Park. though no detail was provided, it was only labeled as a Corporate Building. it's a 14-storey building with a simple yet modern design.

If the said event was at expense of Cebu province, then there's no reason the event as grand as this won't happen again in the city or sumthin'. :dunno: Mayor Tomas from the very start promised they will show Cebu's best. and the highlight was no other than the Sinulog Festival. are we goin to expect another grand event this January? i think the SEAGames cebu organizers are the same people behind the Sinulog event.

Opening rites serve as PR blitz for Cebu
By Rene H. Martel
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

A “Labor of love” made yesterday’s opening of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games a grand spectacle.

From the sound technicians, to the dancers, and even the volunteers, the people behind the successful opening ceremony labored not for the perks—for there were basically none—but because it was something they wanted to do.

“It was a labor of love and a showcase of Cebuano talents,” said Ricky Ballesteros, Cebu-SEA Games organizing committee (Cebu-Soc) production staff consultant.

Unique to the two-hour display of Cebuano warmth and friendliness were the dance troupe members of the different Cebu City schools and universities, garbed in the traditional costumes of the participating nations.

The dancers moved to the Sinulog beat, in steps influenced by the customs and traditions of the individual countries.

From the parasols of Thailand and Malaysia to the golden robes of Singapore, a contingent of dancers attired in Asean members’ national costumes tailed each country’s delegates during the parade from the Fuente Osmeña Oval to the Cebu City Sports Center.

And in front of a crowd that filled the sports center to the rafters, previous winners of the Sinulog and champions of different town festivals in Cebu performed.

Dancers moving to the SEA Games theme song, sung by upcoming Cebuana diva Maria Donna, capped the presentations.

All throughout, giant screens onstage flashed images of Cebuano landmarks and delicacies.

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Robert Go, in particular, said it was one of the best opening ceremonies he ever witnessed.

“I think we passed it with flying colors. We might even be better than Manila (in terms of opening ceremonies),” added Cebu City information officer Nagiel Bañacia.

Ballesteros, the sports center manager, said that as part of preparations, he and his staff met several times with choreographers and conductors to brainstorm on a concept.

They then held at least three rehearsals for the entire production.

A dress rehearsal was also done, as well as a dry run of the technical aspects of the event, which required the addition of another electric transformer and a 1,000-ampere circuit breaker to cope with the power demand.

Organizers also visited different festivals throughout the country, paying particular notice to opening and closing ceremonies for ideas.

Money was given as allowances, but what impressed Ballesteros was the dedication of the people who worked because they wanted to help make the occasion a success.

And when the games are concluded and the medals handed out, he promised another must-see event.

“If you felt proud of the opening ceremony, you will be prouder as a Cebuano come the closing ceremony,” he added.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

cool! any idea when is the closing ceremony??

@Rusty... IMO it will be duplicated in this upcoming Sinulog Festival......
BTW, the ceremony was shown kanina sa NBN? seen the fireworks display? But the excitement and feeling is different when witnessing it live...
My perception also is that the Cebu opening ceremony will be better than in Manila... but as what I've observed it was better than the previous Sinulog festivals... it's bacause the audiences really participated through waiving, shouting together with a pride within that cannot be explained....

PACQUIAO AIMS TO KO MORALES

By Salven L. Lagumbay
PhilBoxing.com
26 Nov 2005

Pound for pound superstar Manny Pacquiao today announced a singular mission when he takes on Mexican star Erik Morales on January 21 in Las Vegas: Be the first man to knock out the Tijuana native.

Pacquiao, who worked out this afternoon at the famed ALA Gym accompanied by close associate Rex "Wakee" Salud, informed this writer in an interview that he is aiming for no less than a knockout victory when he tangles with Morales again in a pay-per-view card at the Thomas and Mack Center.

"KO talaga ang nasa isip ko. Di ko sya tatantanan," (KO is what's in my mind. I won't let him go) Pacquiao said, still seething from comments made by Morales to media that his punches could not hurt the Mexican in their first encounter.

With personal trainer Nonoy Neri and some companions, Pacquiao made his second workout at the ALA Gym this afternoon, hitting the mitts, shadow-boxing, jumping ropes, and of course, posing for the camera with fans who trooped to the gym just to catch a glimpse of the boxing hero.

Former World Boxing Council superfly kingpin Gerry Peñalosa, who is also training at the ALA Gym for his Dec. 10 showdown with Paraguay's Dario Azuaga, joined Pacquiao in the training session, and even predicted that the Filipino star will stop Morales in their return battle.

"In their first meeting, Pacquiao had too much distraction. I personally witnessed how he was bothered by too many people days prior to the fight. But this time around, Manny will knock him out. Morales is on the way down, and besides, he just got married," Peñalosa said.

The same prediction was aired by noted Cebuano promoter Sammy "Don King" Gello-ani, who joined Salud and Philboxing.com owner Dong Secuya, while Pacquiao was doing the mitts with Neri. Gerry Peñalosa (in black shirt skipping ropes) joins Manny Pacquiao at this afternoon's training session at ALA Gym in Cebu. Photo by Dong Secuya.

Pacquiao was set to fly to Manila late tonight, as he is set to join the opening ceremonies of the Sea Games tomorrow. Pacquiao had joined the Sea Games opening in Cebu last Friday, where he was mobbed by fans at the Cebu City Sports Center. On December 3, Pacquiao flies to Los Angeles to continue his training under renowned trainer Freddie Roach.

Airport to expand soon, assures Yap

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/Jimbu/view_airport_bridge_mandaue.jpg

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) hopes it can start working on the P1-billion additional terminal building, to accommodate the increasing number of airline passengers.

This will give the MCIAA another reason to celebrate, as it marks its 15th year as an international airport on Dec. 16.

MCIAA General Manager Adelberto Yap said the construction of the new international terminal will start soon because the airport is expected to serve five million passengers annually by 2010.

Mactan airport was opened to international traffic in 1990, after the passage of Republic Act 6958 or MCIAA Corporate Charter, which was sponsored by Rep. Raul del Mar (Cebu City, north) and then senator John Osmeña.

At present, Mactan airport caters to 2.5 million passengers.

Assistant General Manager Ildefonso Lazaro said more foreign tourists and businessmen are interested in coming to Cebu because Mactan airport is only two to four hours away from 14 major cities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Bridges, ramp

Lazaro said MCIAA will also build two boarding bridges and develop another 50,000 square meters of lot as parking ramp for wide-bodied aircraft.

The airport plays a vital role in Cebu’s economy, especially for multinational companies at the Mactan Economic Zone.

MCIAA has a total land area of 1,020 hectares, 475 of which are used for commercial purposes.

Although the ownership of the 255-hectare lot at the Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base was placed under MCIAA by RA 6958, the Philippine Air Force only turned over 100 hectares because of an executive order issued by then president Fidel Ramos retaining 155 hectares for the Philippine Air Force.

The 100 hectares were developed by the Aboitiz Group and is now the site of Mactan Economic Zone 2, from which MCIAA receives 40 percent of its income in rentals. (EOB)

Torres, divers score first golds for RP in SEA Games

First posted 11:38am (Mla time) Nov 27, 2005
By Musong Castillo, Marc Anthony Reyes
Inquirer News Service

ATHLETICS star Marestella Torres and divers Shiela Mae Perez and Ceseil Domenos topped their respective events to give the Philippines its first gold medals in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games.

At the Rizal Memorial track and field oval, Torres leapt to a distance of 6.47 meters to nip teammate Lerma Balauitan-Gabito and claim the country's first gold medal.

The 24-year-old native of San Jose town in Negros Oriental nailed the feat in her sixth and final jump, beating the veteran Gabito by just two millimeters.

Barely an hour later in Los Banos, Laguna, Perez and Domenos plunked in another gold medal by joining hands to rule the the women's 3-m synchronized springboard event at the Trace Aquatics Center.

The Filipinas tallied a total score of 260 points to defeat Thailand's Sukrutai Tommaoros and Supapan Prasertkwan and Malaysia's Leong Mun Yee and Cheong Jun Hoong, who took silver and bronze, respectively

GREAT SHOW!
Cebu's coming out sports party
wows locals, athletes and visitors

OVER 1,000 dance performers, a 200-voice choir accompanied by the homegrown Peace Philharmonic Philippines and a P3 million fireworks spectacle were all that was needed to bring at least 20,000 spectators at the Cebu City Sports Center to their feet all night last Friday.

The opening ceremony of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games in Cebu was, in the words of Monico Puentevella of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee, a presentation that "can give Manila a run for its money."

"Now we can finally say that the SEA Games belong to the entire Filipino people not just for Manila," said Puentevella, who was seen with top political and sports officials at the VIP section of the CCSC.

Manila's P40 million SEA Games opening will be on Sunday. Bacolod on the other hand, had its opening last Nov. 19.

Cebu tune

Fast-paced, the Sinulog beat ushered in the parade of athletes from 11 member-countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Following each delegation was a dance troupe from a local university depicting that country's traditional costume and dance.

Applause rang out as each country was called.

The applause became a deluge of cheers when the athletes and officials of the Philippine team were called to march in front of the stands.

"Manila can never surpass our opening. I will stake my name on it," said Jonathan Guardo, head of the Cebu SOC.

"It is very impressive how Cebuanos worked together to have an outcome such as this. Everyone was enjoying. Even our foreign athletes were dancing to the beat," Philippine Sports Commission Commissioner Ricardo Garcia said.

Even Mayor Tomas Osmeña was ecstatic.

"We thank those who have sacrificed to make this spectacle happen. A spectacle that we should be proud of," he said.

First Gentleman Mike Arroyo and boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao were seen visibly enjoying the spectacle, together with Cebu Gwen. Garcia and Mayor Osmeña.

Garcia and Osmeña gave welcome speeches. The governor gave particular stress on unity and strongly voiced out her calls for a unified and undivided Cebu.

They two, with Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano and Danao City Ramonito Durano, led a small procession to a large stage with members of the organizing committee, referees, and delegates of the 11 member-nations.

Foreign delegates took time to comment on what they witnessed since arriving in Cebu.

"Cebu is a nice place and have nice people," said Indonesian Lanny Budiani. Budiani is a contestant for dancesport.

Mohd Khamin Saip, assistant team manager of Singapore's pencak silat team said he came not only to win gold but to discover the host province.

"This is my second time in the country. I heard that Cebu is historical and I want to find that out," Saip said.

T. Chiewchanpreechakul of Thailand, one of the karatedo judges, said "This is my second time in the country and I expect good competition in the event."

More than 80 athletes from twelve different countries participated in the opening ceremonies.

Only Timor Leste did not have participants during the parade.

All-Cebuano

"It was an all Cebuano production, and nothing can beat that," Ricky Ballesteros of the Sinulog Foundation said.

Ballesteros, together with Dolly Suzara, spearheaded the production of last night's event.

Cebu's very own Peace Philharmonic Orchestra and Huning Sugbuanon Chorister serenaded the crowed with both Filipino and Bisaya classics.

A dance number marked the start of the program where four dancers in fiery costumes of blue, red, white and gold, symbolizing the union of the four elements of life, performed.

The Philippine delegation came in last and received a resounding cheer as people, chanting "Philippines, Philippines", stood to honor the flag.

An accompanying group of dancers from the University of San Carlos swayed to the Sinulog beat in pink Filipinianas.

The SEAG flags where then hoisted and Cebuana Karatedo SEAG bronze Medalist Lutche Metante led a torch run, escorted by other SEAG bets who were mostly from Cebu.

Metante then passed the torch to another Cebuano, Arnold Balais, who, with a hydraulic lift, was raised to the top of the urn, alighting it.

Balais is the swimming gold medalist in the 1st ASEAN Paralympics.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano then declared the SEAG open.

The crowd roared in approval and a shower of blue, white, red and yellow balloons rained on the people on the stands.

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Robert G, said that the opening ceremonies exceeded what Manila had offered in the previous hosting of the country.

Although security was tight, a lot of people without tickets managed to get through the gates, a police official said.

Generally, however, acting city police director Melvin Gayotin described the event "peaceful."

Gayotin also said he deployed more than 200 PNP personnel inside the sports center.

Chief of Security and Service Group (SSG) Supt. Mariano Natuel was ground commander of security.

Natuel said about a thousand policemen were deployed along the parade route from the Fuente Osmeña to CCSC.

K-9 units were also posted at strategic places inside and outside the sports center. Paramedics were also on stand by.

Cebu, Mandaue and Danao cities plays host to six events namely dancesports, judo, karatedo, mountainbike, pencak silat and sepak takraw.

Bacolod hosts volleyball, beach volleyball, football, boxing and weightlifting.

The games will officially start on Sunday with Dancesports at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Karatedo at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Center.

Grand opening provokes reminder from cardinal

The opening extravaganza of the Southeast Asian Games last Friday night failed to impress Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal. He was thinking of feeding poor children and the homeless instead.

Archdiocesan media liaison officer Msgr. Achilles Dakay said the cardinal believes the millions spent on the welcome ceremony for the athletes and officials from the 11 member-countries should have been used for a feeding program.

?They should have spent as much money feeding the children and the people on the streets,? Dakay told reporters.

The Cebu City Government reportedly allocated more than P3 million for the Cebu-SEA Games Organizing Committee (Cebu-Soc), and over P300,000 was spent for the fireworks that capped the event at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The cardinal has always been vocal about poverty and oppression in his homilies. He has a feeding program every Sunday at the Sacred Heart Church.

Every Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., poor children and adults line up in a tent outside the church, where they are given food. This has been ongoing for five years now.

About 500 to 1,000 people every Sunday benefit from the feeding program, Dakay said.

?We feed, we don?t ask questions,? Dakay said of the program that was inspired by Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

?I don?t think those who are not poor would pretend to be poor just to get free food. I also don?t think people pretend to be hungry just to eat,? Dakay joked when asked if the church is wary that there will be ?gatecrashers? in the feeding program.

Those who have become regulars at the feeding program were given T-shirts with the words ?alagad nga kabus? (poor servant) written on the back. Below it is a passage from Matthew 25: ?I was hungry and you fed me.?

Dakay said the cardinal had this idea back when he was still the parish priest of the Metropolitan Cebu Cathedral. Outside the church, Vidal would notice the children scrambling for food come lunchtime.

Other feeding programs are also organized by different parishes within the week, but Sacred Heart Church has been consistently doing it for five years.

I am always PRO-Vidal but now, I'm against him in this issue.
He should even be thankful to the Cebu City government since they only spent P3 million for the Opening Activity which was supposedly worth hundreds of millions (the dance extravaganza, the choir, the people's WOW, etc...). Comparing it with figures, Manila has already spent more than P40 million for their opening activity tonight. If he wants, Cebu City could even allocate a separate budget for his feeding program... ;)

although the cardinal has a point, hosting the sea games is a promotion of tourism here in Cebu and it's a big impact in our economy.. Maybe he's not aware that the church's influence here in country has been a factor why we are poor. Due to it's interference, our population has ballooned due to its contradiction to contraceptive measures and family planning... a lot of people have no shelter and food because of overpopulation. Agree ba mo nga angay mointerfere ang church?

But actually, IMO, the Cardinal shouldn't have given a negative feedback to the Opening Ceremonies since it's receiving WOWs and wonderful feedbacks from locals and foreigners alike. If I was him, I would have kept silent and appealed to the the government to allocate even an n%(hehe, Mathematics :D) to his feeding program.

@Sugbuanon: I do agree! I want a meaningful homily but the priests give "IRRELEVANT TO THE GOSPEL" homilies.

That's why my teacher said:

>"Manimba gani mi sa akong asawa, kuyugan nako siya pero kong magsermon na ang pari ingnon nako akong asawa nga 'HON, Magpahangin sa ko!'. Nya, mobalik ra ko inig offertory."

He too is tired of the irrelevant homily.

For me naman, Cardinal Vidal didn't know that most of the audiences are average people... It is a big gift for our less fortunate fellow Cebuanos that winessed that big spectacle... Only 30 pesos that's why only a few rich people wintessed the opening "they thought that it's not a bongga event coz it's only cheap!"... compared to sinulog's 300 to 500 entrance...
People behind the event didn't sleep for several nights just to make sure that this even will be a big success, they sacrificed a lot... Cardinal has the right to comment in that way if the Cebu City government have disregarded our people but they didn't, everyone can tell when that continuous fire broke last week in different barangays, government officials eagerly responded for the sake of Cebuano people.... So to Mr. Guardo, you're the best.... I hope he will not be offended by the Cardinals comment...

But in a long run, it will be a big break for Cebu to be known internationally that will boost our tourism industry more that will create more job opportunities for our less fortunate fellow Cebuanos...

BAD NEWS: Bad news to the students since their school in Sacred Heart in Gen. Maxilom Avenue will transfer to Mandaue in 2007 so big adjustments have to be made.

Pinoys still best in dancesport
By Randy Caluag

CEBU CITY—The Philippines dominated the one-day dancesport competition of
the 23rd Southeast Asian Games, sweeping both the Standard and Latin American
events for a two-gold, two-silver medal haul last night at the packed ballroom
of the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug.

Showing too much flair and class, the Filipinos proved too dominating on the
floor and got the nods of the European adjudicators who are also here for the
International Dance Sport Federation Open at the same venue.

Drawing the loudest cheers were the Cebuano couple, Michael Mendoza and Belinda
Agora as they moved with dramatic emphasis in their movements in the jive, pasa
doble, rumba, cha-cha and samba.

Seven of 12 couples made it the finals in each of the two categories.

“I’m so overwhelmed. They (athletes) really deserved it,” said Dancesport Council
of the Philippines president Becky Garcia.

“The people saw how our athletes stood out on the floor. The European judgessaw it
that way and nobody could really contest that we’re the best in Southeast Asia.”

Yeah, Cebu has the right to brag about the recent Opening. we shouldn't compare it with the official opening in Manila though. SEAgames attention is on Manila. BUT... Cebu being merely a satellite venue, participated with less than 1000 athletes and delegates having an opening ceremony like that?! it's a wow! it's all worth and hey, i don't want to miss the Awarding/Closing of the event coz i heard it's gonna be better than the already spanking opening! :okay:

Cable car to Mt. Manunggal planned
Published: 27 November 2005

by Dale G. Israel

THE town of Balamban in northwest Cebu has signified its intention to join a project to set-up a cable car system from Tabunan, Cebu City to the peak of Mt. Manunggal, Balamban.

The project, which was also being eyed by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, is part of an effort to promote the area as the province's newest eco-tourism zone.

Tabunan, where Cebu's last patch of primary growth forest is located, is across Tabunan valley from Mt. Manunggal. Bisecting the two is the Tabunan river.

The board members advised Mayor Alex Binghay to confer with Osmeña regarding the cable car project.

Just recently, members of the Provincial Board visited barangay Gaas, Balamban to determine its inclusion in the eco-tourism project that is anchored on the famous mountain.

Balamban officials, however, have signified their intention to withdraw barangay Gaas from being a contender in the "Summer Tourism Capital" title.

The board also visited barangay Mantalongon in Dalaguete which was also eyeing the same title.

Barangay Gaas councilors recently passed a resolution seeking the declaration of the mountain village as Cebu's "Summer Tourism Capital" prompting the Provincial Board to inspect the area last Wednesday.

The right pick will be included in the intensive tourism programs under the Provincial Tourism and Heritage Council.

PB Member Agnes Magpale, chairman of the tourism committee, told Cebu Daily News that she was surprised that Balamban town officials, including Mayor Binghay, called for an eco-tourism proposal instead anchored on Mt. Manunggal as the hub.

"I don't know if it was a change of heart, but I guess asking for the summer capital title was the intention of only the barangay officials, not the entire town," Magpale said.

She said she was thankful that she did not have to make the hard task of choosing between the two towns, Mantalongon and Balamban.

Magpale said the Balamban town officials wanted to include not just barangay Gaas in the proposed tourism project but also the famous mountain where the late President Ramon Magsaysay died in a plane crash.

It was on March 16, 1957 that Magsaysay left Manila for Cebu where he was scheduled to speak at an educational institution. That same night, he boarded the presidential plane, Pinatubo, heading back to Manila. In the early morning hours of March 17, his plane was reported missing. It was late in the afternoon that day that newspapers reported that the airplane had crashed on Mt. Manunggal, and all those aboard were killed except one newspaperman, Nestor Mata. Vice President Carlos P. Garcia assumed the presidency to complete the last eight months of Magsaysay's term.

Getting the nod

The town officials told the board members that their main problem is getting the approval of the national government to develop Mt. Manunggal for eco-tourism considering that national law prohibits the town from doing so.

Magpale asked the town officials to include their proposals in a form of resolution so that the PB can help them lobby to the national government through an provincial ordinance.

The Provincial Development Council has identified historical structures such as houses and buildings which would be repainted by Boysen Philippines.

Initially, the historical structures due for repainting are in Malabuyoc, Argao, Boljoon and Samboan.

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia has met with officials of oil companies like Petron, Caltex, and Shell, for the setting up of clean comfort rooms in gasoline stations outside Metro Cebu so tourists can relax halfway through their trips to both ends of Cebu.

Foreign media assails
'poor handling' of SEAG

by Wilfredo Rodolfo III and Marian Gladys Baring

They say that when you want to make an impression, you should first impress the storytellers. But on the first day of Cebu's biggest showcase, the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (SEAG), foreign media already had a lot of suggestions for improvement. At the Mandaue City Sports Complex, where four medals were up for grabs Sunday, the media center only had one computer, which quickly became the object of jokes among journalists from richer countries. Media from the Philippines' neighboring countries said they also wanted to be treated well - at least at par with how they were pampered in the previous SEAG in Vietnam.

"It's so hot. I think there is no air-conditioning," said Ramlee Abdul Hadi, a producer for Radio Television Malaysia. Pok, a lady television reporter from Thailand, dropped by the media center to gather data on game schedules and results only to find volunteers who, to her amazement, were not doing anything. "I hope they will have results next time," Pok said. Foreign journalists, most of whom are staying in Guadalupe, Cebu City, also complained about the lack of free transportation to and from the venues.

"In Vietnam, journalists had vehicles take them to and from the venue, for free," said Malaysian cameraman Ibrahim Abd Hamid, a SEAG and Busan Asian Games veteran. Cheryl Ouano, head of the Mandaue City SEAG organizing committee, clarified, however, that as host, they are only responsible for billeting journalists and not feeding and transporting them. Vietnam Sports Newspaper reporter Tuong Ha Huy, a veteran of five SEAGs, said the host could do better in terms of organization in the next few days. "The SEAG in Vietnam was very good," he said.

The lone desk in the media center is currently occupied by the laptop computers of a huge Malaysian newspaper. Other journalists have to stand or, worse, leave the center and look for a better place to write their stories and send them to their companies. Leaving or entering the media center is also becoming a chore, according to some foreign lady television reporters. Most of the time, they have to wade through a flood of people in bleachers and entrances. Those who opt to stay at the center, however, have other problems to contend with, particularly the lack of chairs, tables and space. There are at least 40 foreign and local journalists covering the SEAG in Cebu.

The lack of food and drinking water is also taking its toll on foreign journalists. SEAG organizers instead give foreign journalists a small amount to cover their food expenses. Down in the competition venues, areas reserved for journalists are being "invaded" by SEAG volunteers and visitors. As for the cities, the foreign journalists said many areas could use a little more sweeping. "There are many areas which should be cleaned," said Ramlee, a journalist based in Kuala Lumpur. "There are also many poor people and squatters area. That should be minimized." If there is one thing good about the SEAG, it is the top-level competition among athletes and the friendly people of Cebu, most of the foreign journalists said. "The people are very friendly and they always smile," Tuong said. "The youth are very supportive. That is very good," Pok noted.

You see? The secret to Cebu and the whole Philippines is its grand heritage and cultural landmarks.. We definitely lose in skylines competition, and all those skys-crap polls. But who cares? Venice is still more beautiful than Hong Kong!

I hope more cultural monuments, art-deco skyscapers, and the like are to be built, renovated, expanded all over the Philippines. SM Malls please stop making Big Kahon!

I'm really surprised huh... SM City Cebu has one level below ground despite it's being built on a Reclaimed Area. Isn't this dangerous? :?

^^ hapi birthdy bai.

dili man cguro dangerous for as long as the foundations were built strong and suitable for the height of the building. though i have no idea about the rules of construction.

Thanks!

I was also surprised thinking why SM hasn't built a basement parking in parallel with their having a level below ground. :)

BTW, for everyone's information...

SM SEA GAMES SALE: November 27-December 5, 2005
GAISANO COUNTRY MALL 10 DAY SALE: November 27-December 6, 2005

Hala, SALE SALE everywhere. I went to SM, it was just like a normal shopping day even if it today is a holiday and there's also a SALE. WA SIGURO'Y KWARTA NA?!? :D

CCCI readies Cebu Master Plan

The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has already made final touches on the Cebu Master Plan (CMP), which aims to make Cebu the tourism and information and communications technology center of the Philippines.

During CCCI’s general membership meeting at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel last week, CCCI president Robert Go presented the CMP to the public for the first time.

The CMP includes the Metro Cebu tourism corridor centerpieces, Kawit Island Tourism Facilities, cable car system and the tourism economic zone.
The Metro Cebu tourism corridor centerpieces of the tourism corridor consist of three sites. These are the Cebu and Mactan Boardwalk, which features an ampitheater, family theme park, Marina Yacht Club, Marina promenade, Zen Center and restaurants, among others.

Amusement

The second centerpiece is the Cebu Heritage and Cultural Center. This will consist of the Malacañang of the South and its environs.

The last centerpiece is the Kawit Island Tourism Facility, which the chamber envisions to be known in the future for its amusement Park. The park will include a sea plane landing area, an open space concert hall and wind surfing facilities.

The CCCI also plans to develop a 3,500-hectare property in Cordova for economic zones and information technology (IT) parks.

Another breakthrough future endeavor included in the CMP is the cable car system, which will offer a panoramic view of Cebu City. The cable system will run from the foot of Nivel Hills in Lahug going to Tops.

“This will be one of the most sought after tourist attractions in the country,” Go said.

The chamber also envisions a part of Punta Engaño to become a tourism eco zone. This area will host a variety of hotels, theme parks, a public pool, hanging bridge, shopping centers, restaurants and other tourist attractions.

Self-sustaining

Go said all the projects cited should be self-sustaining. That is, they should fund other projects and should produce a multiplier effect with a far larger result compared to the sum of all projects taken individually.

The CCCI conceptualized the CMP in response to President Arroyo’s promise during CCCI’s grand awards night last year to make Cebu an international industrial center, a tourism destination center as well as the maritime capital and hub of IT in the country.

“With this declaration, Cebu’s businessmen immediately devised a plan to realize this vision,” Go said. (JBN)

True Sugbuanon...I've been feeling that way since 1st year college till I was 27. Try to ssek him...dont trust on the works of Man...coz man will fail you, rather, trust in the Lord coz his word will never fail.

Try seeking a personal relationship with him by reading the word, thats more important than listening to the priest. My advice, seek a "Christian" (non-catholic) denomination more commomly known as "born-again christians" in pinas. To tell you the truth try to get to know people of this faith and you will understand all the wrong perceptions of this faith. Just an advice from a bro in Christ...Cheers..

I truly agree with you Manileno.. In fact in Europe (according to a magazine), the establishment of Museums, good taste restaurants, art galleries, etc. are the "true indicators of progress" (NewsWeek Magazine) unlike here in Asia where the race to the sky is still the sign of wealth..

From Pattaya Vs. Cebu thread:

"I like thost old churches and antique-looking buildings in Cebu, this is something you can't find in Pattaya."

"IMO, things that Pattaya lacks of are History and culture."

Filipinize our skyline!

Exactly, museums/galleries/cultural landmarks/etc reflect society (they are communal treasure) more so than skycraps that may just reflect affluence of some individuals in society. And those skyscraps may co-exist with slum houses below. Whereas with culture and heritage, this is shared by the whole population. 'USA doesnt have a culture' to begin with, so they're just skycrapping and all. Asia is also part of the old World like Europe, don't know why it's acting like New World. Cheers!

RE: by Zyntax of Davao
thats so typical of davaoeños attitude towards cebu, i dunno, but im a davaoeño but i learned to get out of that mentality, i used to think that davao is prolly better than cebu in ALL aspects, and all that snatchers, hustlers etc. and that davao is cleaner blah blah blah. i used to think that davao is a supercity until i went to cebu... a BIG SLAP went striking through my face out of nowhere, it hurt my pride, lesson learned, wag masyadong BS, we just have to admit that some city can do something better, dream bigger, believe harder, and survive longer! o dba? hehehe. about that davao being cleaner than cebu of course, it would be cleaner than cebu, cebu has greater density of population, more roads, more businesses, more people, more activity, more urban than davao, we dont have to argue about that, its like bragging that alaska is cleaner than new york!!!! which obviously is, you dont need to be a rocket scientist to figure that out, aight? im in cebu now, and i have adapted to the culture here, and so sorry to my folks down in davao, i like cebu more than davao now. AND I wanna raise my family in a city or urban setting, not in a jungle (ok shoot me! my comment is too WILD)

anyways, i just miss Cebu . that's it, beaches here in Thailand are nice (Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui) but it cannot still beat Cebu's charm, hehe, Phuket doesn't have a decent party place at all, unlike there in Cebu where you can find classy bars, but here in Thailand, (well of course in Bangkok there are lots) in Phuket and Pattaya in particulars , it's mostly prostitution, it doesnt mean Im not enjoying it but yeah it's a pity if people will just come to your place and f*** somebody.

for Cebu, it's all in one place, we got all to satisfy a tourist.

(JBN)

I've been to Cebu and it was quite more than I expected. Coming from a small town of Dingras, Ilocos Norte, Cebu has a lot more to offer in terms of almost everything except for one thing, hospitality. The majority tend to be more hospitable towards non-Filipino foreigners rather than filipinos from abroad. They need to realize that filipinos from abroad spend lots and lots of money to family members in the Philippines and which in turn, they use for expenses.

Fixing the infrastructure especially the road towards Shangra-La in Mactan needs widening and beautification. Before we reached the resort, we almost turned back. It was no like what we saw on the pictures. We were not told about the thousands of flies that will land on your plate as soon as you sit down especially eating at those stalls. I think they're called turo turo. Being in Shangra-La was nice though. Even better than being in Boracay.

This picture is actually showing the seaside portion of Talisay City, (the bottom part before reclamation) and the southern barangays of Cebu City bordering Talisay. The old downtown of Cebu City is not visible because after the reclamation is Pasil market/fish port and then on the top most portion is Carbon market area.

i see. Is it gonna be the first tall district in Cebu? or is there another 'Ortigas'? Cos if it is really to be big and grand, there should be just ONE compact 'financial downtown'. And that's what i dont like about Manila: they're scattered and not 'walkable'. Most world cities have only one financial district yea?

ATHENA’S VERY FIRST plane ride went without a hitch.

It was a lucky day for all of us. We were upgraded to Class A, according to my son, Tyrone. The wonderful PAL agent must have taken pity on me, traveling with two kids and a baby, assisted by my jewel of a nanny, Juvy, of course. With the plane so full, he still found a way to sit all of us together, which was great as I was nursing seven-month-old Athena.

My kids got to do a photo op with the pilots before takeoff. Seven-year-old Annika was amazed with the many switches in the cockpit and wondered how the pilots knew which buttons to press. She could only compare it to her Game Boy with six knobs. They were so excited with the chairs that fully reclined to almost a full stretch. Athena, on the other hand, was just curious trying to figure out what was going on.

We were all headed for Cebu for the Ad Congress! Inquirer was a major sponsor, so my husband, Dennis, flew in ahead with the other attendees. I just flew in for the Inquirer party and Araw Awards that weekend. All the creative minds of the advertising world were at the Waterfront Hotel, honoring the top print, radio and TV commercials.

At the airplane-inspired party, Inquirer CEO and my little sis, Sandy Romualdez, launched Inquirer Compact, the new, mid-sized Inquirer edition. I am sure this will be just as successful as the innovative tabloid, Libre.

Before they raffled off a trip to Cannes, the comic group The Spit gave a really hilarious program. The mascots of Inquirer and Cebu Daily News—Guyito and Siloy—also stole the show.

Anchorwoman Veronica Pedrosa hosted the main Araw Awards right after the Inquirer party. I could almost hear her saying, “This is CNN.” Her heavy British accent is her distinctive trademark.

The Araw Awards are always fun. I remember awarding one category at the last Ad Congress in Baguio, with my trademark outrageous sun outfit by fab designer Rajo Laurel.

Unlike previous Ad Congresses where there were countless celebrities of both ABS-CBN and GMA7 milling around, this year had less parties and events. One exciting show-biz feature was the press conference of the former housemates of the ABS-CBN hit reality TV show, “Pinoy Big Brother,” at the Casino Filipino.

‘Pinoy Big Brother’ craze

A few weeks back, I was invited by Metro Magazine of ABS-CBN Publishing to check out the behind-the-scenes action at the PBB set. Annika was so excited, she asked me if she and her cousins could tag along. Clueless about the show, I was amazed to learn what a phenomenon PBB had become.

The housemates are to complete 111 days without contact with the outside world and learn to co-exist until they get voted out. They should come up with a PBB Congress! The whole house is surrounded by cameras, recording everything 24/7 and edited for the daily one-hour show.

At the end of the tour, evictee Sam Milby happened to be there and the lucky girls were thrilled to have a photo with him. Today, there are four housemates left and Dec. 10 is the big season-ender.

After chatting with director Lauren Dyogi, I was short-listed as a possible housemate in the celebrity PBB edition starting January next year. Even with the generous prize money, though, I don’t think I would last a day. The rooms, including toilets, have cameras. My hair won’t last that long without my weekly visit to Emphasis Salon with my stylist Victor Ortega. There needs to be special accommodations if I am to consider the challenge.

Cebu connection

Whenever I am in Cebu, I call on my Cebuano party connection, Butch Carungay, to fill me in with the latest happenings and the hottest bars. So just before the finale of the Araw Awards, Dennis and I sneaked out and headed to the soon-to-open restaurant-bar, Cielo. Co-owned by Butch, this ultra-chic hot spot near Ayala will surely be the place to be seen. Butch also told me the bar is perfect for him—he might as well make a commission on his drinking!

From there, we headed toward the newly renovated Vudu Bar, the Cebu version of Embassy at the Fort. Located at the ultra-hip leisure complex Crossroads, this dance club owned by John Paul Chiongbian is the coolest place to hang out.

Thanks to John Paul’s sister, Jaja Chiongbian of Mactan Island Shangri-La, we even got VIP passes with free champagne, though I was still nursing and so held back on the bubbly. When I eventually stop feeding, I shall have an open-bar party celebration. Of course, at the rate I am going, this might be still in two years!

After all the partying, we headed back to Mactan Shang for a fun-filled activity weekend with the kids. This resort is continually renovating and improving their facilities. One truly has to be impressed with their faith in the Philippine tourism industry!

Spa treat

We once again enjoyed relaxing treatments in Chi Spa and had lunch in the soon-to-open Tea in Spring, their Chinese teahouse with over 50 specialty tea flavors to offer. Shang’s new marketing head, Sharon Samarista, told us over dim sum there is a continuous flow of foreign guests, Koreans who come to get married, Japanese families, European honeymooners and other Westerners. The hotel has built a beautiful, nonsectarian chapel with the pews facing the ocean. When Mass is celebrated at sunset, it is an incredible sight.

Cebu is marketed outside the Philippines as “an island in the Pacific.” That way, they are independent of the negative perceptions about our country. The tourist industry is thriving down south and is indeed helping with our country’s economic growth.

Another event, even further south, was Timeless Weddings Bridal Fair at the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao. Last month, the hotel hosted the biggest wedding and brides’ fair in Mindanao. Renowned designer Frederick Peralta presented his latest bridal collection to the cosmo Davao audience. His long gowns with delicate beadwork and Asian-inspired creations illustrated his creative artistry.

The Philippines can totally boast of many beautiful facets among its many islands. As the Ad Congress theme goes, “Are We Ready for the World?” Of course we are!

Nope it wouldn't be.. The South Road Properties (SRP) formerly the South Reclamation Area is an economic zone and not a central business district.. The city already has a planned CBD, and that's the Ayala-developed Cebu Business Park, where Ayala Mall is also located.. Although as of now, the real business district is Downtown Cebu..

Once construction of the second tower is completed, construction of the third (and final tower) will begin... :) Occupants of this building are mostly Iranian students (my classmates before!), some Koreans, some offices, a review center, KAPLAN, a radio station, etc.. etc..

Sy family opens new China mall as it studies entry of SM brand
Henry Sy, head of the country’s largest retailer, has opened a second mall in China in Jin Jiang city, Fujian province.

The mall covers 165,000 to 175,000 square meters.

The Sys first entered the booming China market with a 120,000-square meter mall in Xiamen in 2003.

"We have opened two malls. It is a Filipino-Chinese mall as big as SM Fairview and SM Bacoor. Most of our managers there are Filipinos. They seem to like it," said Teresita Sy-Coson, vice-chairman of SM Investments Corp., the flagship holding company.

The Sy family is studying how its mall operator SM Prime Holdings, Inc. and SM Investments can participate in running the family’s malls and other properties in China, which are privately held but carry the "SM" trademark.

"We have to study if we should at this point. China’s projects are still very new. We have to make sure they can really bring in enough income before we do that. In China, it is not easy to make money. We are still starting," Ms. Sy-Coson said.

SM Prime, the country’s largest shopping mall developer and operator, will participate in the bidding of a 27,351-square meter lot along Governor Cuenco Avenue in Banilad, Cebu City.

Ms. Sy-Coson said, "This is just a small one. This is a hyper market, which is a bigger super market." She did not provide other details.

In a letter to the exchange, chief information officer Jeffrey C. Lim said the board of directors of SM Prime had authorized the firm to bid for the lot owned by the Cebu province.

SM Investments is the holding company of the SM Group. Incorporated on Jan. 15, 1960 as Apex Investments and Financing Corp., it was renamed SM Investments Corp. in 1979. Last March, it was listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange. SM Investments has interests in retail merchandising, shopping malls, banking and financial services, real estate development and tourism.

SM Prime is the country’s largest shopping mall developer, owner and operator. It pioneered the idea of malls in the country, combining shopping, dining, entertainment and leisure in one structure. The Sy family also has interests in banking and financial services as well as real estate development. The family also has an interest in high-end leisure property development.

Last Tuesday, British group, Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp. and the World Presidents’ Organization, a global organization of more than 4,300 individuals who are or have been chief executive officers of major business enterprises, honored four of the Philippines’ business greats, including Mr. Sy.

Others cited were Ayala Corp. President and Chief Executive Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala II, Washington SyCip, founder of the country’s leading professional services firm SyCip, Gores, Velayo & Co., and Jollibee Foods Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Tony Tan Caktiong.

Actually Manila seems really poorly planned until you go to the other ASEAN capitals like Jakarta or Bangkok. KL is half-walkable only because it is very small. Only Singapore is perfectly planned, go figure.

Bangkok, Jakarta and KL don't have a proper skyline because the office buildings are scattered throughout the city. You can't go from one business meeting to the next without taking a car, especially in Jakarta.

Within the Manila business districts, the buildings are walking distance with each other. The Makati CBD is quite walkable, especially with the over and underpasses the MACEA has erected. Ortigas Center is hopefully going towards that direction. Even Manila's Bayside area has enough interesting spots that are walking distance from each other.

I hope Cebu does not fall into the Bangkok and Jakarta trap. Hopefully the main office buildings cluster properly around the Ayala development or the old downtown area. Otherwise, say hello to the traffic nightmare that is Bangkok.

By the way, most large cities have more than one CBD. New York's main offices are in Downtown and Midtown Manhattan. London's CBDs are comprised of the old City of London and the new Canary Wharf area. Hong Kong's business centers are separated by Hong Kong harbor.

yea, i agree. let's wish all the best for Cebu!

And yea I am from Manila (that's why my handle is Manileño hehe) so i know about Makati, Ortigas and Bay City. Makati is walkable yea, i tried those undergound passes in ayala/paseo, etc. But yea, i hope there's just one big financial district for Cebu. and if there shall be 2 or 3, i hope there would be a fast and convenient transpo from one walkable district to the next.

About NYC, i actually walk downtown to midtown (sometimes, i know it's more than 60 blocks apart, but it's 'continuous' and not like you're gonna have to pass through a village or wasteland), and that's what i mean by 'walkable'. hehehe

With London, of course. It's got the most efficient and extensive subway system so there's no problem at all. City of London is Wall Street. Canary Wharf is midtown. And London is a museum city so practically any direction is 'walkable'. Cheers!

McDo to open 3 new outlets in Cebu
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/4392/mcdo1ss.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

An official of fastfood giant McDonald’s revealed yesterday the firm has found the sites of three additional branches in Cebu City.

McDonald’s operations consultant Christian Eje said the fastfood chain hopes to open the new branches next year.

A fourth branch is being eyed, but the firm has yet to clinch an agreement with the owner of the property.

“The fourth (outlet) will depend on the third because they belong to the same owner,” Eje said in an interview. He refused to reveal the locations of the new branches, though.

New attractions boost
Cebu's tourism sector

THE tourism industry in Cebu faces brighter prospects in the near term with the introduction of two new products - a short-haul cruise service and a simulated Bethlehem.

Cebu is noted for its beautiful beaches, but tourism stakeholders have been citing the need to develop a variety of products to attract more tourists.

The two products were introduced recently to tour operators to encourage them to include these in their packages.

Ang Magdaragat, a 63-footer twin engine yacht with a capacity of 25 to 35 guests, offers sunset cruises at the Mactan Channel and a "Hilutungan marine life experience", according to Jay Gonzales, the yacht owner.

Its features include an open-air deck, three air-conditioned bedrooms, four toilet and bath, a kitchen and dining area.

Cecille Sa-a of Blue Horizons said Ang Magdaragat is a welcome addition to the existing products they sell to tourists.

"We need something like these to offer something different to tourists," Sa-a said. The sunset cruise would take an hour and a half of sailing along the Mactan Channel while the trip to Hilutungan Island would allow tourists to view the marine sanctuary, Gonzales said.
Bethlehem

Set up at the Talavera House of Prayer-Recoletos complex in Quiot, Pardo, the simulated Bethlehem features live portrayal of the wedding at Cana, annunciation and nativity scenes and craft-making (embroidery, foundry, shoe making, pottery, carpentry, bakery, weaving and others) during the time of Jesus.

According to Fr. Raul Buhay, director for external affairs of the University of San Jose-Recoletos, they have asked the Department of Tourism to include the simulated Bethlehem in its promotions.

Buhay said the attraction, which started to develop four years ago, is the first of its kind in the Philippines and is targeted to both domestic and foreign tourists.

On selected days until December 18, the USJ-R grade school dance troupe and college dramatics ensemble would be staging cultural presentations that include dances from different regions in the Philippines.

He said they invested more this year than last year in putting up more historical and religious scenes.

"For the food alone of the volunteers portraying the different roles, we spent P150,000 for seven days. Last year, we spent P120, 000 for just four days," Fr. Buhay said.

They also budgeted P100, 000 for costumes and props and another P100,000 for labor costs. The Wedding at Cana and the Jordan River each cost P200,000, he added.

Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Francisco L. Benedicto told Cebu Daily News that the place is a good attraction for tourists, especially the overseas Filipinos.

He also lauded USJ-R for its foresight in acquiring the property for this project.

Cebu's tourism industry has been on an upswing with the continued increase of tourist arrivals.

Visitors get to experience Philippine culture during 23rd SEA Games
By Channel NewAsia's Philippines Bureau Chief Twink Macaraig

The 23rd Southeast Asian Games provides a unique opportunity for visitors to the Philippines to get to know the country better.

Because certain sports venues are set up in Visayan region besides Metro Manila, thousands will get to experience cultures that are different from the capital, yet remain distinctively Filipino.

History books do not explain why a particular nook in Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu is the centre of the country's guitar-making industry.

All its residents will tell you is that they learned the craft from their parents, who learned it from their parents.

And while some designs may barely resemble classic guitars - all the instruments bear the mark of Cebuano workmanship.

Frederic Book, Proprietor, Island Guitars, said: "The sound quality makes the difference. When you pluck the strings, they're in tune. Even cheap guitars here are pitch perfect."

Simple guitars made of the wood of local fruit trees cost just US$9.

Jazzed-up versions with intricate inlays and electrical components cost up to US$180 - still a bargain for any would-be pop star.

Or anyone with a taste - or ear - for fine native art.

Athletes coming to the Philippines for the SEA Games may or may not bring home medals but it would be inexcusable not to bring home a few souvenirs from their travels.

Easier to pack are Cebu's famous dried mangoes, the healthy snack that nets the province over US$5 million annually in exports.

Bought from in Cebu, the dried mangoes cost about half their price abroad.

Alternatively - athletes competing in Bacolod can snack on the city's famous barbecued chicken.

The secret's in the sauce, they say, vinegar, oil and spices that give it that characteristic orange tinge.

And while it may not be the ideal takeaway for tourists, you can get your fill while you're there - it's served virtually everywhere.

For those with a sweet tooth, there are Bacolod's pastries.

A natural offshoot of the sugar industry that was the island's bread and butter for over a century.

A flat molasses-filled morsel called piaya is the most common request from those who want something to remember the Visayas by. - CNA /ch

McDonald’s To Open More Stores In Cebu

Losing out to local behemoth, Jollibee, in the race to the number of stores per square mile, doesn’t mean McDonald’s, the world’s largest fastfood chain, is losing steam.

Recently, Golden Arches has announced it will undertake major expansion program beginning next year as it transformed itself into an all-Filipino owned company after it bought out 64% of ownership from the American mother company early this year.

According to one McDonald’s official, they already have identified three to four strategic locations for its new stores. They hope the stores will open in the middle or late next year.

Currently, there are six McDonald’s stores across the metro, three of which are wholly owned by George Yang’s Golden Arches Development Corp., the franchise holder of the McDonald’s fast-food stores in the Philippines.

Cebuanos began their love affair with McDonald’s when the first local McDonald’s restaurant along Osmeña Blvd., opened its doors in October of 1993. It was also the first foreign burger chain to locate in Cebu even ahead of the local rival, Jollibee which opened its first store in Cebu only a month later.

Cebuanos will see more of the golden arches sprouting all over the metro in one to two years’ time. And more people will be ‘lovin’ it.’

Emall expansion set to begin next summer

Cebu Central Realty Corp. plans to develop a 5,000 square-meter property as an extension of Elizabeth Mall in downtown Cebu City.

Lawyer Augusto Go, owner of Elizabeth Mall, said yesterday that work on the three-story building, where the University of Cebu (UC) Allied Engineering School stands today, is set to begin in summer of 2006.

Go hopes to complete the mall extension by March 2007 to accommodate the growing number of mall-goers.

“There is a demand for more space,” Go said of the mall, which is visited by an average of 40,000 to 60,000 persons a day.

However, he revealed that the tenants have observed that while sales have gone up, the number of items sold has decreased, indicating that the economy is not doing well.

Aside from the mall, Go said expansion work on the University of Cebu (UC) campuses in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City and in Mandaue City are ongoing to accommodate the increasing number of enrollees.

Go observed the number of enrollees has increased in the past two years.

“The trend is there. (But) I’m not expanding in downtown (UC main) because of the peace and order problems,” he said.

Go, who is also UC president, said the UC Banilad expansion project is worth P89 million while the expansion of UC-Lapu-Lapu-Mandaue campus will cost P90 million.

“These will be one of the most modern campuses in the country,” Go added.

He said the improvements will not only include the infrastructure but also equipment as well.

Go said he is putting in a lot of investment in education because the country is now becoming a training place for workers who find work abroad.

“But I’m not proud of that. I would like the graduates to work in the Philippines,” he added.

However, he agreed with the observation that overseas Filipino workers are keeping the country’s economy afloat through their dollar remittances. (CYR)

so these are the projects of Go:

1. expansion of Emall
2. expansion of UC Banilad
3. expansion of UC Lapu-lapu
4. renovation of a building in UC Main (an architect friend told me this)
5. hopefully, he'll be putting up an I.T. building at UC's vacant lot near UC Banilad

I remembered that fire that broke up in one of UC's buildings in downtown area where it was very clear that they started the fire to replace the old one that they've burned to build a new modern building. As of now, the new modern look building is already standing tall. nice move Mr. Go:D

I'm impressed with Emall not that huge but with 40T to 60T persons a day...

Yeah, I was surprised that Elizabeth Mall attracts 40K to 60K mallgoers a day...

While SM attracts 130K to 150K on weekdays and 180K to 210K on weekends; Ayala attracts 120K to 150K on weekdays and 195K to 230K on weekends.

How about Metro Colon (Metro Gaisano)? I suppose it's the most crowded store in the south.
