dark_knight_detectve July 8th, 2008, 02:17 PM Samsung opens 2nd concept store (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080707139&type=2)
Tuesday, July 8, 2008 8:14:33 PM
Bent on taking the top spot for the widely segmented mobile phone market in the country, Samsung, a leading South Korean brand is looking at expanding its network and market reach with the opening of its second concept shop in SM City Cebu’s Cyberzone.
In an interview with the vice-president of the mobile phones team of Samsung Electronics Philippines Corporation, Charles Seungho Choi, he said that Samsung always believed in the growth potential of Cebu as the second biggest market in the country.
Samsung Mobile’s shop at the Cyberzone is the company’s second concept store in Cebu, next to the one at the Ayala Center which opened in November of last year.
Different from the first store which showcases both of Samsung’s mobile and consumer electronics segment such as LCD TVs, home theater systems, electronic gadgets like digital camera and MP3 players, computer monitors and printers; the second shop on the other hand carries the six different segments of Samsung’s mobile phone market.
The six segments include: the business segment composed of units geared towards dual sim cards for executive and office use, the stylish segment geared for trendsetters, multi-media segment which is focused on music, the infotainment which is apt for consumers looking for merge of entertainment and information and then the connected and the essentials segments.
Choi said that among the six segments, Samsung is strongest in the style, essential and the multi-media segments.
He said that before Samsung’s segmentations were based on high-end and low-end phones but since Samsung is aiming to capture a huge market base and be number one in all segments, they started to come up with his new segmentation strategy.
“We started to come up with this new segmentation second half of last year. Before we based it on price segments but we realized it was not the right way so we came up with the six segments and started hitting niche of consumers that boosted sales,” Choi explained.
On the consumer electronic segment, Samsung is globally considered number one, so Choi expressed determination to also do the same in the mobile phone segment.
Currently, Samsung is considered as the second top mobile brand next to Nokia in terms of market share and with their aggressive marketing strategies so far, Choi is aiming to one day beat the competition.
“If we were able to overtook Sony globally in the LCD TV segment and become number one, why can’t we make the same in terms of mobile phones? We are a very ambitious company and we aim to be number one in all kinds of products we sell,” Choi pointed out.
In Cebu, Choi said that they are also looking at establishing stronger market presence to dominate the area as well as the huge Visayas and Mindanao areas.
“If we will be able to become number one in Cebu, it will follow in other cities so right now we are establishing stronger partnership with our consumer electronics dealers because without them, we can’t possible achieve our goals,” said Choi.
Samsung’s SM City Cebu Cyberzone concept shop will be managed by Samsung’s dealer and partner Junrex.
Jun Yap, the president of Junrex said that their partnership with Samsung has been on-going for several years already and with this strong collaboration, he was able to notice stronger market presence of Samsung in the Cebu market. —Rhia de Pablo
Blair July 8th, 2008, 03:14 PM Construction of four-lane tunnel in Cebu fast-tracked
Angie Chui
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said it is fast-tracking the implementation of Segment 3B-2 (subway section) of the Cebu South Coastal Road Project in Cebu which involves the construction of 610-meter twinbox, four-lane tunnel that passes under the Park Plaza Independencia in Cebu City.
A report of DPWH Metro Cebu Development Project Director Nilo Pamaylaon stated that the subway section is now 40.48 percent complete. The completion of this subway project will provide direct access to the southern reclamation area which is now a highly industrial zone, catering to the export processing, investment opportunities, business district and international container port in Cebu City," the report stated..
The project is also seen to ease traffic in the metropolis and cut travel time by half.
Meanwhile, Cebu City Planning and Development Coordinator Paul Villarete said since the DPWH had completed the first four packages of the Cebu South Coastal Road project, investors had poured funds in the Cebu South Reclamation Project which greatly contributed to the fast-growing economy of Cebu City.
"Even though the project is not yet fully completed because of the remaining works in the tunnel section, we are already experiencing the advantages of this new road network because since the DPWH had opened the Talisay Section, Causeway Section, Viaduct Section and the Offshore ramps the traffic in the Cebu metropolis was greatly reduced because of the new alternate road," Villarete said.
Project consultant Katahira and Engineers International said, however, the contractor has run into delays in the boring of sheet piles because of concrete boulders underneath due to old structures like the seawall, but it is now preparing catch-up measures in an effort to complete the project by June 2009

Blair July 9th, 2008, 03:06 AM US is still top buyer of furniture from Cebu, industry group says
DESPITE a weakened economy, the United States remains to be the top buyer in the Cebu International Furniture and Furnishings Exhibition (Cebu X) 2008.
Post fair figures shows that the US is a major market for the Cebu export group, said Ruby Salutan, executive director of the Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation (CFIF).
“The US market is just challenged, it’s not like business is no longer there,” she told Sun.Star Cebu in a phone interview yesterday.
She added that it also helped that the Cebu X has already been considered as an important destination by international buyers.
For this year, US buyers accounted for $3.6 million in sales or 23 percent of the total sales of $15.4 million during the Cebu X last March.
Higher sales
This year’s total sales is higher than the $15 million earned during the 2007 exhibit, even with a decrease in the number of exhibitors for Cebu X 2008.
According to CFIF data, three countries made it to the top 10 buyers’ list for the first time. These are India, which is the third highest with over $700,000-worth of purchases, Brazil—on the fifth spot, accounting for four percent of total sales—and Canada, which contributed more than $500,000-worth of purchases.
Salutan said these countries have already attended the Cebu X in previous years but it is only this year that they made significant purchases.
Other countries that made it to the top ten list were Saudi Arabia, Spain, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Egypt, and Mexico.
“In general, this is proof that our shift in promotion strategy worked,” Salutan said. For this year, CFIF has modified 80 percent of its promotional efforts using information technology (IT).
Based on its study, CFIF found out that most buyers now shop through the Internet.
Using electronic mail and beefing up the group’s website also proved to be more cost efficient. CFIF used to spend a lot on the printing and mailing of brochures to local and international contacts.
As the group will unveil a new concept for Cebu X 2009 tomorrow, Salutan said CFIF will continue to maximize on the benefits of IT to promote the exhibit. She said CFIF will make the Cebu X website more “buyer-friendly.” (DME)
betro July 9th, 2008, 07:21 AM RLC builds 7 BPO sites in provinces
By JAMES A. LOYOLA
Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), the country’s largest office landlord, is developing seven BPO and call center sites this year to expand its office space inventory and give its clients a stronger presence in the provinces.
RLC president Frederick Go said in an interview that while many of these projects are relatively small compared to their projects in Metro Manila, these provincial office spaces give BPOs a chance to relocate to the region of their choice.
He added that these BPO spaces will be built together with new malls and will have about 5,000 square meters of leasable space costing "just a few hundred million pesos."
RLC disclosed earlier that it is allotting R13.9 billion for capital expenditures for 2008 and 2009 of which 40 percent will be used to build new malls while the rest will be for office and residential developments.
To be developed by RLC’s Office Buildings Division in tandem with its Commercial Centers Division, the seven new projects are adapting the mixed use format, a strategy RLC pioneered when it built the Robinsons Galleria Center.
"We are currently incorporating office spaces intended for BPOs and call center operators in our shopping mall developments, specifically Robinsons Luisita in Tarlac City, Robinsons Cybergate Cebu between Cebu’s Chong Hua Hospital and Fuente Osmena," said Henry Yap, Business Unit General Manager for RLC’s Office Buildings Division.
He added that "Robinsons Cybergate Davao, along J. P. Laurel in the Bajada District, and Robinsons Cybergate Plaza in Mandaluyong City are also under construction and will be ready for occupancy by next year. We are currently accepting lease inquiries for all these properties."
These projects are in addition to two recently completed projects in Robinsons Otis, in Manila and Cybergate Tower 3 in Mandaluyong City – both of which are now ready for occupancy.
BPO and call center firms are rapidly expanding into the provinces due to lower costs of operations, larger manpower pool and lower rate of employee turnover.
In addition, the relatively lower cost of operations in the Philippines have encouraged many firms in the United States and Western Europe to outsource their operations to the Philippines, thereby making these sites even more desirable and lucrative.
"We are also giving these BPOs an opportunity to undertake pioneering efforts in our sites, a move that is very much encouraged and supported by the local government units that hosts our malls and offices buildings," said Yap.
RLC, a leading property developer and landlord of choice, foresees that locators for business process outsourcing and the call center industry in general, are gearing their expansion plans toward key regional urban centers.
"These areas—-Cebu, Davao, Northern Luzon and the Calabarzon areas offer talented and highly skilled human resources sourced from prestigious educational institutions that are highly proficient in English," added Yap.
RLC has built BPOs and call centers in Bacolod, Lipa (Batangas) and Sta. Rosa (Laguna) and Cainta (Rizal). In Metro Manila, in addition to Robinsons Novaliches and two Cybergate Towers within the Forum Robinsons Complex in Mandaluyong City.

rage@cebu July 9th, 2008, 08:23 AM CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebu City will get 20 more second-hand buses from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, whose officials pledged to donate the vehicles as a sign of friendship.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he will leave for Taiwan on Thursday to sign the deed of donation.
The air-conditioned buses will need to be refurbished in Taiwan before they are shipped to Cebu.
The fleet is expected to arrive here in September.
Kaohsiung City, which opened city sisterhood ties with Cebu City in 1988, is the second biggest seaport city next to Taipei.
Nearly a hundred buses have been donated by Kaohsiung City to Cebu City over the years but only 15 are still in good running condition.
Some units were donated to other cities. A number of buses are under repair.
Those no longer fielded on the road are being used as temporary shelters for victims of fires and natural calamities or turned into a mobile classroom and library, said City Councilor Augustus Pe.
Some were also used by the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) as temporary detention center for traffic violators.
The new batch of buses being donated are air-conditioned and look sturdier than their predecessors, said Cebu City hall public information officer Nagiel Bañacia.
“The buses are pretty good,” Mayor Osmeña told reporters. “We anticipate we’ll have to spend for some refurbishing.”
rage@cebu July 9th, 2008, 08:24 AM LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines – Lapu-Lapu City Administrator Teodulo Ybañez said Tuesday he respected the opinion of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña who belittled the recognition given to Lapu-Lapu as one of the 25 most competitive cities in the country.
Ybañez, however, reminded the mayor that Lapu-Lapu did not commission the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project (PCCRP) 2007 conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).
“The Asian Institute of Management is an authority that is very sound and credible,” Ybañez said. “We, in Lapu-Lapu, are told to respect the opinion of others. That is his (Osmeña) opinion and we respect that.”
Ybañez said Lapu-Lapu did not know that a survey was being conducted as city officials were busy implementing development projects.
He added Lapu-Lapu Mayor Arturo Radaza did not lay claim to the prestige but shared the award to his critics, including businessman Efrain Pelaez Jr.
Lapu-Lapu made it in the top 25 in the competitive survey conducted across the country. Cebu City and Mandaue City were among those surveyed but these did not emerge in the ranking.
Lapu-Lapu ranked high in terms of infrastructure and cost of doing business mainly due to its two export processing zones.
Osmeña belittled the recognition, saying he did not have high regard of the AIM because it did not have a track record of bringing in investors and studying operations of local government units.
Pelaez, Mactan Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, said the presence of an international airport, export processing zone, among others made Lapu-Lapu a natural beneficiary of progress.
“Almost all the big projects in Mactan were started before Radaza was elected...many projects are simply continuations of what was started prior to 1997 but were interrupted by the Asian crisis,” he said.

dark_knight_detectve July 9th, 2008, 01:46 PM Epson sees potential in Cebu’s market size, business ambiance (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=2008070868&type=2)

Wednesday, July 9, 2008
Optimistic with the growing awareness of the market for IT-related products these days, Japanese brand Epson is determined to dominate emerging markets such as Cebu.
“There are plenty of opportunities for Cebu and Epson eyes the area as a potential market aside from Manila and Davao because of its market size and positive business environment,” said Epson Philippines Corporation Head for Pre Sales Group Christer Joseph T. Destajo in an interview.
Epson is a worldwide brand in digital image innovations as it focuses on meeting clients' demand using technological breakthroughs on its products.
Its products are composed of four major groups which include: imaging on paper (printers and other imaging products), imaging on screen (office & home multimedia projectors, and other visual imaging equipments), imaging on support devices (displays, semiconductors, optical devices, quarts devices, mechatronics), and imaging on glass (mobile displays).
Destajo said that since Epson established presence in the Philippines last 1998; they managed to grow rapidly into becoming a billion peso company in a span of a few years due to its client-oriented approach on its business management.
He said that currently, they have been servicing a wide client-base from the corporate sector including big companies such as Jollibee Foods Incorporated, San Miguel, McDonalds’, UCPB, Banco de Oro as well as top notch schools such as Ateneo de Manila and the De La Salle University and public offices such as the National Statistic Office and the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
“We have since been providing complete printing solutions to our client-base from dot matrix to laser down to inkjet and our core competency lies in patented technologies that we have innovated,” said Destajo.
Aside from printers, Epson is also considered as one of the world's largest manufacturers of scanners, desktop computers, business, multimedia and home theatre projectors, large home theatre televisions, robots and industrial automation equipment, point of sale docket printers and cash registers, laptops, integrated circuits, LCD components and other associated electronic components.
Traditionally, the company has been manufacturing Seiko timepieces since its foundation and is one of three core companies of the Seiko Group. With numerous subsidiaries worldwide, Epson has been able to generate net sales in 2006 to 2007 which amounted to 1.416 trillion yen.
dark_knight_detectve July 9th, 2008, 01:57 PM New BPO building to rise inside Mactan Economic Zone 2 (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW070908/content.php?id=044)
CEBU CITY — Aboitizland, Inc. has started building a five-storey commercial corporate building for business process outsourcing (BPO) companies.
The iMEZ, which will rise inside the Mactan Economic Zone 2 (MEZ-2), is estimated to cost P160 million and targeted to be completed by March 2009, Aboitizland President Andoni F. Aboitiz said.
He said they were talking with five prospective locators, all foreign BPO companies. The new building will have a gross leasable area of 5,000 square meters.
"We’re trying to attract not just the call centers, but the real BPOs," Mr. Aboitiz said. Since the structure is within the Mactan economic zone, locators will automatically enjoy tax incentives, he added.
The new building is within the Pueblo Verde commercial block. Its ground floor will be leased to retail shops and dining outlets that will complement retail establishments in the area.
The Mactan Economic Zone 2 is a 63-hectare economic zone developed and operated by Aboitizland — the real estate arm of the Aboitiz Group — under a build-operate-transfer scheme for landowner Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority. It has 48 locators that employ about 18,000 workers.
Although Aboitizland considers the zone a success, Mr. Aboitiz said there are no plans to replicate this in other areas since the Philippines is losing manufacturing investments to China and Vietnam.
Aboitizland also co-owns with Tsuneishi Holdings, Inc. the Cebu Industrial Park Developers, Inc., which developed and operates the West Cebu Industrial Park in Balamban town in Western Cebu.
Meanwhile, Aboitizland will be launching the third phase of Kishanta subdivision in Southern Cebu. Mr. Aboitiz said the new phase will rise on an adjoining 12-hectare property.
"The first two phases have been mostly sold out," he said. The 16-hectare subdivision offers lot-only properties and house and lot packages.
By the third quarter, the subdivision would be ready for house construction, Mr. Aboitiz said.
The road network has been completed and power and water supply will be installed before the quarter ends.
The company will soon start greening activities for the subdivision — planting hardwoods and aromatic trees.
This is to fulfill the nature-oriented design of the subdivision," he added.
Work is also ongoing on four house-and-lot units that will be ready for occupancy by September. — Marites S. Villamor

US senator visits Capitol
Thursday, July 10, 2008
A US senator will be in Cebu today for a four-day unofficial visit, a part of which is a courtesy call with Governor Gwendolyn Garcia for a possible sisterhood agreement.
Senator Daryl Beall, who hails from the state of Iowa, said in his letter sent earlier to the governor that he has read about her and her remarkable accomplishments.
“You are a progressive and visionary governor and I applaud you,” said Beall, the chairman of International Relations Committee of Iowa General Assembly.
Beall, who will be joining Garcia during her State of the Province Address today, stated that he is looking for possible cultural and educational exchanges, and even for economic and commercial ties.
The US senator, who is also named as the “Asian Ambassador,” added that he has already helped established sister city relationships in Russia, Japan and Canada. — Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/LPM

Ng: Photo contest for Mandaue Business Month
By Wilson Ng
Wired Desktop
I AM now involved in the preparations for the Mandaue Business Month 2008 in August. The event, which coincides with the Mandaue City Charter Day, is hosted by the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Mandaue is an industrial city and, in many ways, different from Cebu City. Thus, we are trying to work out some events that would be different from those held during the Cebu Business Month, which I was involved in.
One of the events that we will organize is virtual as it will be almost wholly on the web. This is the “Sugbu Kini Photo/Video Tag Contest.”
With the onset of digital photography, we no longer have to buy film and pay for developing. This has increased interest in photography and video. Due to a heightened interest in photography, there are probably millions of photos of Cebu in thousands of websites and computers worldwide. Scores of them are uploaded to social networking sites like Facebook or Friendster, and more are put into public photo libraries like Picasa, Photobucket or Flickr. Millions of videos are in YouTube, and other sites.
However, many photos are not properly labeled, tagged or uploaded to the Internet.
We figured that if we can just make people upload and properly label photos on to the Internet, it would be easier for Internet surfers worldwide to find pictures of Cebu.
This is the reason we are launching the contest. Those who can find photos of different towns and cities in Cebu on the Internet can join as well; they just have to note the URL where the photos are posted and submit their labels or keywords to our web-site.
Those who will send us photos will be able to participate in a raffle. Each photo will earn one raffle entry. The contest is open from July 12 to August 20, 2008. The website, www.ccebu.net/mandaue, is currently in the works.
Winning entries will be evaluated based on: whether the picture is really of Cebu, depicts life in any town or city in Cebu and/or its cultural heritage, and if the description or keyword successfully describes the picture.
Prizes, totalling P20,000, await winners.

SHOOTING STRAIGHT By Valeriano Avila
Thursday, July 10, 2008
The Mandaue City Council has approved some P5.2 million infra projects which includes pipe laying and drainage improvements, an asphalt overlay in the Talamban-Tawason project and other projects carried over during the Ouano Administration. However, I didn’t read anything about any plans to widen the H. Cortes Ave. I guess this is due to the fact that these are projects done solely by the City of Mandaue, while the widening of H. Cortes Ave. is expected to be done by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) because it needs some national funding.
I also suggested earlier that Mandaue City ought to do something on its own, like connecting a major road system directly to the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) at the Mandaue Reclamation, which I’m sure would not cost much as it is only a gas station across the SMC Brewery. Doing this project on Mandaue’s own funds, would certainly go a long way in proving to our people that we really do not need a national government agency like DPWH to do major road connections. This one is easy; all it needs is a few million pesos. However it also needs something that most politicians find hard to secure, a political will to do changes for the good of everyone, especially Mandauehanons. But so far, I got only silence on this plan.
Finally, I would like to know what happened to the P1.5 million earmarked for the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF)? Anyway, here’s an open letter to the City officials of Mandaue emailed to me from a Mandauehanon who requested this to be printed in this column. As we are writing about Mandaue City today, I’m giving space in this corner for this very important letter from a Mandauehanon.
Honorable Sirs: Greetings from Missouri! I am Eli Cabahug Perez, born and raised a Mandauehanon. In 1976, I left our beloved City of Mandaue to seek a better life for me and my family. I left the country with a sad heart, knowing that despite the bountiful opportunities made available to me in my adopted country, Mandaue is still the place where my heart belongs.
After more than 30 long years of living in Columbia, Missouri, I have come to appreciate the system of governance that views elected positions as a chance for gifted individuals to share these gifts for the glory of the city and with the people who elected them. I have come to value government officials performing their tasks as true servants of the people instead of the other way around. It is my dream that Mandaue and Mandauehanons will be able to experience the same true democracy in action. To make this dream come true, I and a group of other like-minded Mandauehanons from all over the world, have come together to let our voices be heard. We call ourselves the Global Mandauehanons.
We the Global Mandauehanons, are very disappointed in the recent developments in our fair city and are dismayed that elected leaders are failing the people and Mandaue miserably. We believe that too much politics is depriving Mandaue the progress it so richly deserves. We are appealing to your love for Mandaue to set aside partisan politics and do what is best for our city. You have chosen to be our leaders. We now ask that you lead Mandaue to greater heights not to stagnation due to endless political bickering!
A few years ago, you defied certain COA disapproval when you voted to increase yours and the vice-mayor’s salaries. Now you depict a group cowering in fear of an uncertain COA judgement for a mere 1.5M pesos? Are you telling us that you were not afraid to face COA sanctions when it concerned your interest but are now paralyzed with fear to grant ERUF the necessary funds so that they can serve Mandauehanons and receive two fire trucks as well? Does it really matter that much to you as to who gets credit for improving Mandaue? For the love of Mandaue, take the chance!
We are now more than 10 million strong who left the country to seek for a brighter future. You yourselves most probably have a relative or a friend among us. As a leader, is this truly what you want for our country and city? To be deprived of the talents that could have made our country stronger? To be denied the company of loved ones? Our country is regressing due to too much politics and self interest. Mandaue City can be a showcase of a city that works, a city where elected leaders can work in harmony for the love of country and people. Wouldn’t this be a better legacy to pass on to your children? Or would you rather be another footnote in Mandaue’s history as the clowns who thought they could be leaders but instead drove more of their people to leave for foreign lands? All for the good of Mandaue.” This letter was truly written from the heart of Mr. Eli Perez. I hope Mandaue City Officials would listen to his pleas. I fully agree that the bickering in Mandaue should stop and resume when the election campaign starts.

Gwen won’t run for higher post (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/07/11/news/gwen.won.t.run.for.higher.post.html)
By Gerome M. Dalipe
Sun.Star Correspondent
CEBU Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia last night rebuffed talk that she will run for a higher office in the 2010 elections, saying she would rather focus on challenges here.
She also kept up a running theme in her annual State of the Province Address since 2005, that of Cebu Province being debt-free. After posting P17 billion in assets in 2007, the province is “the strongest” it has ever been, the second-term governor added.
“We are now, without any doubt, the richest province in the country, not just in the present, but at any given time in this country’s history,” Garcia told local officials, business leaders and other guests at the Capitol Social Hall.
Her 45-minute speech, interrupted by applause more than 20 times, highlighted that the Province’s total assets have increased by more than 300 percent from P2 billion in 2004 when she won her first term.
“There is so much to be done here,” she said. “And the challenges, this sense of hope, our simple pride in being Cebuano are too strong and irresistible.”
“I cannot find myself leaving Cebu for anything—not for money, nor for fame, nor for greatness. Not even for higher office. My fellow Cebuanos, I am here to stay.”
Garcia pointed out that despite a “phenomenal” increase in spending for basic services and infrastructure projects, the Province still has a surplus of over P1.3 billion.
“Unlike local government units in the country, including one whose local chief executive seems to draw sustenance from his hostility to and obvious envy of the Province, we remain debt-free,” said the governor, apparently referring to Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.
The two local executives have been openly critical of each other’s projects ever since a proposed land exchange deal between the City and Province collapsed in early 2006. Last year, the Province closed certain roads in the city that crossed Capitol-owned lots, while the City sat on permit applications for a provincial project in Banilad.
Both parties are now fighting in court over ownership of Fuente Osmeña and surrounding properties.
But Garcia said last night she will not be drawn into a war of words or “odious comparisons that are the mark of a basic insecurity.”
“This much we can say: we have not mortgaged our present, much less our future, for debt from which there seems to be no relief in sight.”
She reported how the Provincial Government recovered 164 hectares of Capitol-owned lots scattered in Cebu City, including the 80-hectare Camp Lapu-Lapu property, 22-hectare Boy Scout lots and Cebu City Zoo.
The governor also promised that 534 kilometers of provincial roads will be asphalted by the end of 2008.
She announced the conversion of 69 bridges from wooden to concrete, construction of seven national bridges, 71 two-classroom school buildings, additional district hospitals, water system projects and electrification projects in remote barangays.
She also mentioned in passing a lawsuit filed against the Province by WT Construction, which claimed that the Capitol owed it P261 million for additional work on the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).
The governor clarified that the Provincial Government will await the court’s decision on the matter, but that the CICC continues to earn in the meantime.
“The project has been earning revenues for the Province in the past one and half years since it opened. And we are not paying for any interests or the principal of any bank loan.”
Apparently referring to the City’s South Road Properties, the governor said that unlike the Province, another local government unit is paying for the principal and interests on the loan used to finance a project that’s “just lying there empty, save for some migratory birds, and has not earned a single centavo for the people.”
In contrast, the governor said, the CICC generated more than P32 million from 237 events for January 2007 to June 2008.

LordCarnal July 11th, 2008, 06:36 AM Well it's like this...
Gwen still has another three year term... There's a chance that she will still be the governor of Cebu after 2010..
Why run for a higher post if she can be Emperador of Cebu for the next three years, hehe.. Well, this "last three years" will I guess serve as her preparation for a higher post.. So in 2013 she might run for senator..

Billionaire Arab plans to invest in Cebu
Cebu Daily News
July 11, 2008
Manila - The world's seventh richest Arab, Mishal Kanoo, has signified interest in investing in the country, particulary in Cebu, Senate President Pro Tempore Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada said yesterday.
Estrada, who has just arrived from the United Arab Emirates, said that aside from meeting Filipinos there, he also met with the 39-year old Kanoo, who has an estimated personal fortune of $1.7 billion.
In their meeting, Estrada said Kanoo told him that "My brother visited Cebu recently. We believe that Cebu is a good place to make investment and do business."
The Arabian business told him that the Philippines is rich in both natural resources and skilled labor, and would thus not be hard to promote as a destination for international business ventures and tourism.
The only things that discourage Kanoo and other investors, Estrada said, are "heavy traffic" and "poor infrastrucuture" in urban areas particularly Metro Manila.
But he assured the senator that he would continue to hire more Filipino workers, who are known for their hardwork and efficiency.
Estrada, who chairs the Senate committee on labor and also the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on Labor and Employment, said he will ask other foreign employers to adopy Kanoo Group's policy of not charging placement fees to be deducted against the foreign worker's salary.
According to Estrada, the June 29, 2008 issue of Arabian Business places Kanoo as the 22nd most influential Arab in the world. /Inquirer

hans boy July 11th, 2008, 12:43 PM ^^
No offense too! Our Cebu City Mayor Tom is a product of AIM and he himself belittled his alma mater survey. I don't need be a graduate of AIM to belittle their survey! IMMO! The purpose of their survey is not to rate and rank the cities of this country but to promote it to investors.
There is no doubt that AIM is one of the best management school in Asia. But their survey? Gross! Too good to be true! It is like saying that it is possible for angels from heaven to invest in hell and then satan will welcome them to its for sale airconditioned studio type condo unit at the basement.
Potchot69 July 11th, 2008, 12:51 PM Belittle? More like sourgraping kamo.
PINOYmeat July 11th, 2008, 01:09 PM i am from lapulapu city mismo, one of the top ranked metro cities sa pinakahuling surveys na yan, and the inclusion of lapulapu city made that survey even more hilarious than it was before! so, can you say im sourgraping? pppffffttt..

Potchot69 July 11th, 2008, 01:15 PM You all have a point. But it still doesn't change the fact that AIM is the best business school in Asia.:)
Sinjin P. July 11th, 2008, 01:16 PM Belittle? More like sourgraping kamo.
Hey dude, don't come here in the Cebu thread, or in any other thread, as if you know everything. You don't even know what you're talking about. We are merely complaining about the AIM survey results because Lapu-Lapu City does not deserve the 3rd spot. Have you even been here? If not then I can shoulder a plane ticket for you and I can show you why it does not deserve to be given such title.
Biruin mo 'yan ha, may city na nga kami sa top 10, nagrereklamo pa kami because we know that the city is undeserving. Hindi nga kami nagrereklamo na hindi nakapasok ang iba naming cities. Bakit kamo? Dahil we're not like some other cities who are so hungry for status titles. We don't expect to receive awards. If they come, then thank you very much. If not, then why fret? Not receiving any awards is not the end of the world. It is merely a reminder that we have to strengthen our campaigns in making our cities better.
Now Potchot, let this post serve as your final warning. A lot of forumers have already complained about your behavior in the forums. And if you still continue with your sarcastic behavior then we have no choice but to show you the way out. Thank you and have a nice day. :)
Sleepwalker July 11th, 2008, 01:18 PM Yes...It is "belittle"... :)
There is a big difference between Lapu-Lapu City and Cebu City...In economy, in governance and in infrastructures.
Anyway, this is not all about LLC vs CC...Its about how credible the survey is. And we know the big difference between the two cities, so, that is why we belittle the AIM survey.
Sinjin P. July 11th, 2008, 01:19 PM You all have a point. But it still doesn't change the fact that AIM is the best business school in Asia.:)
Best? That's subjective. Yeah, the school plays a role in shaping its students but it all depends on the student's will if he desires to excel or not. It's like you're saying that students from public schools can never be better than students from exclusive private schools. ;)
Potchot69 July 11th, 2008, 01:20 PM Got your message boss Sinj. But let me leave by reminding you that maybe the truth does hurt.:)

Truth does hurt? What truth? This is what trying to appear omniscient can do. My message to you is "understand the topic at hand first before reacting in a thread" para hindi ka mapahiya. :)
Sleepwalker July 11th, 2008, 01:27 PM Does it hurt you knowing that we belittled the AIM survey results?
Some of the forumers here are from Lapu-Lapu City, and yet they don't welcome the result...Aren't you surprised by that?

Potchot69 July 11th, 2008, 01:45 PM Hay, ayoko na sanang sumagot dahil final warning na 'ko. But just to clarify things, as I said, you all have a point. Maybe there was a flaw in the survey. But again, it doesn't change the fact that AIM is the best business school in Asia so there's no point criticizing it as business tycoons from developed countries will still enroll in it.
Ateneo, UST and UP-Diliman and Manila may not be perfect but they are still the best in RP. Heck, even the Mother Catholic Church with all her sins is regarded as the best religion there is.
And no Sinj, hindi ako napahiya. PINANININDIGAN KO LAHAT NG POSTS KO!!! And if you're thinking of banning me, just think if bragging your money by offering to shoulder fare money deserves to be banned, too.

LordCarnal July 11th, 2008, 02:06 PM Regarding AIM survey... the guys from AIM actually have partner universities.. For Cebu, we have the University of San Carlos. In other words, AIM did not survey each cities individually but rather solicited feedback from the partner universities..
What makes the AIM survey somewhat subjective? The partner universities surveyed only the particular city that they were assigned.. The survey would be somewhat flawed because they were not able to compare the city that they surveyed with other cities..
Of course we cannot blame the University of San Carlos if they rated themselves (I mean they rated ourselves) very low. Perhaps they have high standards for Cebu given that it's a very important city economically? What if another partner university assigned to a particular city rated their city very high simply because they feel that the facilities in such a city is already enough? Subjectivity comes into play here because the different partner universities throughout the country have different standards.
The guys from AIM should look into this loophole and perhaps revise their methodology.
I think the survey would be more believable if there is only one entity who will conduct the survey itself by going around the country and comparing the data with each other rather than by simply gathering data from "contributors" and tallying all the points up.
I wrote in my blog that one of the reasons why Cebu City didn't make it to the top five is that because of its water problem and that its current infrastructure cannot keep up with its very, very fast growth. True. But how about Lapu-Lapu City? Both Lapu-Lapu City and Cebu City are serviced by MCWD.. So the two cities should not have a huge distance between the two of them.
Infrastructure wise, after the ASEAN Summit, almost all major roads in Cebu were paved, a convention center was built (though not in Cebu City per se but in Mandaue), security/traffic cameras were installed at intersections. Moreover we have the south coastal highway, the underground road tunnel, etc. Still I could not understand why Cebu lagged in Infrastructure. Access to potable water constituted only a minor role in infrastructure so even if Cebu's score is zero on this, then the score would still be negligible.
I have actually here a file from the website of the AIM and one of the criteria was "Quality of Life" in which the presence of malls, banks, restaurants, etc. were considered and given a huge score.. Obviously, Metro Cebu has the most number of commercial centers, banks, restaurants, etc. in the Vizmin it being the second most important economic center in the country.
But how come? Duh... Let's just leave the survey alone and work on our own... As what Governor Gwen said, "lihok dili sulti... (more work, less talk..)"
PINOYmeat July 11th, 2008, 02:06 PM pagbigyan na natin si potchot, all he wants is for AIM to be recognized as the best business school in ASIA, sige na best business school na nga, satisfied? pero parang hindi nila kaya gumawa ng credible survey, heck, theyre not even in the most business-friendly country in asia! sheeeesh.
dark_knight_detectve July 11th, 2008, 02:07 PM AboitizLand earmarks P2.3B for Cebu projects (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080710121&type=2)
Friday, July 11, 2008
Despite the projected slowdown in consumer spending, AboitizLand Inc., is set to push through with its plan with an earmarked P2.3 billion for real estate projects in Cebu this year.
AboitizLand Inc., president and chief operating officer (COO) Andoni F. Aboitiz said that the largest capital expenditure of the company is the development of its Urban Village development called “Persimmon”, of which P2 billion will be spent for the entire project.
The company already kicked off with the construction of a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) building at the Mactan Export Zone (MEZ-2) called iMEZ, that would cost at least P160 million for the building construction alone. The five-story building is projected to be completed by next year.
Also, AboitizLand will open its phase-2 development of the chic residential project in the Southern part of Metro Cebu, the Kishanta. The company is going to invest an estimate of P150 million for the horizontal development of Kishanta subdivision.
“There is always a need for housing, although interest rate is seen to creep up due to the double-digit inflation and high fuel prices. But we would rather continue on our project stream, rather than wait for the [perfect] timing,” Aboitiz said.
The threat on consumer budget tightening has not discouraged the AboitizLand’s expansion mode, hoping that this economic challenge would only last for a short term.
“We are hoping that this is only a short term situation,” Aboitiz said adding that despite the volatility of the market conditions, planned expansion plans are pushing through.
Aboitiz believes that there is still a large untapped market for residential unit components, thus the company remains active in their projects, especially for residential developments.
The company is hitting active markets in the real estate sector, these are BPO and commercial buildings, and residential units including condominium, and medium to high-end subdivision with lot-only or house-and-lot offerings.
Although, the expected rise of interest rate in the consumer lending facilities offered by the banks, which include housing loans, would bring about impact in the consumer’s spending decision for residential acquisition plans, Aboitiz said this has not discouraged the company to momentarily stop the planned projects. – Ehda M. Like what I said in the previous page, AIM is one of the best management school in Asia if there is another AIM survey to prove it. Lots of Cebuanos finished their masters in that great school. Let me name one aside from our mayor Tomas, Mr. King of Crown Regency is a graduate of AIM.
What we are questioning is their survey and not the school itself. LLC is part of metro Cebu but we question the inclusion of it in their survey, thus we are questioning also the methodology and integrity of the AIM survey. Supposedly, our first reaction is to be and should be happy with the inclusion of LLC in the AIM survey. But reality shows that we are not happy with it because we know that LLC doesn't deserve to be included in the list. If AIM included LLC in its latest survey then it should have included it in their last survey because LLC is 99% the same LLC from last year.

I think this park is a bit better than Fuente or Plaza Independencia because it's tucked away from the gas emissions of vehicles. From this park you can appreciate better the China Bank and Lexmark towers which are both under construction.
When we went here, China Bank was already putting steel column frames.

hindi pala "standard" yung pag rate kasi different "contributors" rate each city.. and each contributor has its own standard/criteria on the rating... some cities may get higher grades maybe becoz the people who do the rating have lower criteria and some other cities may get lower ratings (even if they have superb/better amenities) because the people who rate them are more discriminating....

Friday, July 11, 2008
Makati City and the town of Dalaguete in Cebu have recently established a sisterhood relationship.
Under the sisterhood agreement, Makati City officials assured support in marketing Dalaguete’s agricultural products in Manila.
Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay and Dalaguete Mayor Andrade Alcantara signed the memorandum of agreement during a simple ceremony held at the Municipal Session Hall.
The event was witnessed by municipal officials, department heads, barangay captains and representatives from different sectors. Aside from Binay, some members of the Makati City Council were also present during the signing.
The agreement states that Dalaguete and Makati City share a common desire to promote and foster friendship and good will.
It added that Dalaguete and Makati City share the “same intention of creating an atmosphere in which economic and community development can be implemented and strengthened.”
Both Dalaguete and Makati seek to strengthen ties of friendship, mutual understanding through exchanges in science and technology, culture and arts, tourism-planning and urban development commerce, trade and industry, education and sports development, environmental protection, public health and social services.
Alcantara hopes that the sisterhood relationship with Makati City will help develop Dalaguete, especially in the promotion of the town as Cebu’s vegetable basket.
He also believes that Dalaguete can be compared to other municipalities in the south in terms of development.
Binay, on the other hand, promised to donate books for the students in Dalaguete. — Jose P. Sollano/LPM

Belittle? More like sourgraping kamo.
^^ ui, sourgraping, reminds me of my signature before..
let me define it again here,
Sourgraping is the false denial of desire for something sought but not acquired; to denigrate and feign disdain for that which one could not attain. The phrase is sometimes also used to refer to one expressing, in an unsportsmanlike or ungracious way, anger or frustration at having failed to acquire something (i.e. being a "sore loser"), regardless of whether the party denies their desire for the item.

Blair July 12th, 2008, 02:42 AM Cebu Province is debt-free — Garcia
Says surplus fund of P1.3 B in its coffers
By MARS W. MOSQUEDA JR.
CEBU PROVINCIAL CAPITOL — Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, the first lady chief executive of Cebu, announced that the provincial government has a surplus fund of over P1.3 billion despite what she described as a "phenomenal" increase in spending for basic services and infrastructure projects.
In her annual State-of-the-Province Address (SoPA) delivered last Thursday night, Garcia said the province’s total assets have increased by more than 300 percent from P5 billion in 2004 when she won her first term to P17 billion in 2007.
"We are now, without any doubt, the richest province in the country, not just in the present, but at any given time in this country’s history," Garcia told local officials, business leaders and other guests who gathered at the Capitol Social Hall to hear her 45-minute speech.
But Garcia said "there is much to be done" for the province as she promised that 534 kilometers of provincial roads will be asphalted by the end of 2008.
She announced the conversion of 69 bridges from wooden to concrete, construction of seven national bridges, 71 two-classroom school buildings, additional district hospitals, water system projects, and electrification projects in remote barangays.
"There is so much to be done here," she said. "And the challenges, this sense of hope, our simple pride in being Cebuano are too strong and irresistible."
"I cannot find myself leaving Cebu for anything — not for money, nor for fame, nor for greatness. Not even for higher office. My fellow Cebuanos, I am here to stay."
Garcia said that she has been asked number of times where she will see herself two years from now.
"I have been asked a number of times where I see myself two years from now. And I smile. I smile because I know exactly what the question is all about. And I smile because I do not see myself anywhere else but in Cebu, now, two years from now, five years from now," Garcia said.
Senators Richard Gordon, Manuel Roxas, Manuel Villar, who have openly expressed their desire to seek the presidency, have all shown interest in getting the governor as their vice-presidential candidate.
Among the invited guests during the Governor’s SoPA was Senator Daryl Beall of the State of Iowa, United States.
Other invited guests included members of the judiciary, heads of government offices in the region, town and city mayors and representatives of the business sector and the academe.
Blair July 12th, 2008, 02:47 AM Bakeries in schools in Cebu City mulled
CEBU CITY — To make nutritious and cheaper breads available to students, the Cebu city government is planning to put up bakeries in schools in the city, with 10 schools already selected as pilot areas.
Councilor Gerardo Carillo said the bakeries inside schools would ensure that students get cheaper and more nutritious breads compared to what they can buy from ambulant vendors stationed outside school premises.
"The city is concerned about the kinds of breads that our students are getting and with the installation of the ‘Nutrition Bakery’, we can say that they will get nutritious breads in their schools," said Carillo.

Governor’s Office - Mr. Clem Mcloskey & Mr. Joseph Chua’s Visit (http://sugbo.cebu.gov.ph/PhotoGallery.asp)
Wednesday, June 11, 2008
Expanding the airport in six months without disrupting operations is the promise of a modular system presented by Clem Mcloskey, senior vice president for Asia operations of the General Electric Commercial Aviation Services.
Mcloskey was accompanied by Joseph Chua, president of Macroasia Corp. and director of the Asian Emerging Dragon Corp., in a meeting with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and private sector representatives to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority.
Mcloskey thinks that the modular system may be the best way to expand Cebu’s airport, which is currently accommodating four million passengers. Mcloskey’s company has done the same thing in expanding the airports in London and in Hainan, China.

CEBU CITY — Sony Philippines wants to strengthen its hold on the notebook computer market in the Visayas by setting up a VAIO shop in Cebu.
Toshiya Kagita, Sony Philippines president and managing director, said the shop at the SM City Cebu will cater to the entire Visayas market and neighboring Mindanao provinces. It is the second VAIO shop opened by Sony in the country. The first was opened in late May at SM Megamall.
Mr. Kagita said the VAIO shop at SM Megamall is doing well. He declined to give sales figures. "That’s why we decided to open another shop in the second largest market," Mr. Kagita said. VAIO shops carry VAIO notebooks and accessories. Mr. Kagita is optimistic that the shop would be make money despite the economic slowdown since Filipinos are technology savvy and the market for notebooks has continued to increase. Komei Nosaka, senior sales manager, said VAIO shops allow customers to experience and obtain answers about the products. — Marites S. Villamor

dark_knight_detectve July 12th, 2008, 04:41 PM Cebu Parklane celebrates 2! (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080711181&type=2)
By Quennie S. Bronce
Saturday, July 12, 2008
Cebu Parklane International Hotel celebrates its second year anniversary today with a party for its corporate friends and guests.
Marketing and Communications Manager Jaybee Aquino said the party, which has a unique theme, is the hotel’s tribute to its loyal patrons and corporate friends.
“We came up with a hat party to be unique. It’s like saying ‘hats off’ or ‘kudos’ to both the staff for a job well done, and for the loyal guests,” she explained adding that the hotel will also be awarding the top 10 producers during the affair. Among Cebu Parklane’s top producers for 2007 are Phil. Electricity Market, Asia Travel, Globe Telecom, GTZ, San Miguel Corp., Coca Cola Bottlers Phil., LTO Cebu, Apo Cement, Pagcor Cebu and DepEd Cebu.
For a relatively young hotel, Cebu Parklane, a three-star hotel, has been doing quite well, according to Jaybee. However, she admits that the hotel had suffered birth pains, as well as growing challenges. “But what is important is that we have also developed milestones,” she added.
Jaybee shared that despite being a young hotel, Cebu Parklane has been benchmarked by other hotels that did not consider it as a competitor before. The hotel has also been active in business missions, such as the Philippine Business Mission to Japan, which was geared to capture the Japanese market. It has also regularly participated in exhibits and trade fairs, the latest of which was the Philippine International Tourism Fair, wherein Parklane won the best corporate booth award.
“We also have a new logo, which we launched last year. It symbolizes the Cebuano hospitality that we are trying to impart to our guests. We are also proud that we have a 100 percent all-Filipino management team,” Jaybee said.
As its gift to their loyal patrons, Jaybee shared that guests of Cebu Parklane can look forward to upgraded services, better food and more lifestyle choices. By the end of the year or early next year, she said 10 additional executive rooms and the executive lounge are expected to be completed. The hotel is also looking into doing package tours for its guests. According to Jaybee, even though Cebu Parklane is located in the city, the hotel does not want to limit its market to business and corporate clients, thus, they are now developing other lifestyle choices such as day tours for guests.
“We really want to show our guests that Cebu Parklane is run by an all-Filipino team but we give world class service,” she said.

dark_knight_detectve July 13th, 2008, 09:28 AM A perfect evening at Blu Bar and Grill (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080712137&type=2)
By Honey Jarque Loop
Sunday, July 13, 2008
Hans Hauri, the hands-on and, I must say, delightful general manager of Marco Polo Plaza Hotel had every reason to smile and celebrate.
After months of meticulous planning and overseeing every detail of the project, the Blu Bar and Grill, located at the hotel’s top floor, is now ready to open its doors and welcome guests.
Likewise pleased and impressed with the outcome were Metrobank chairman emeritus Dr. George S.K. Ty, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu president Rey Villar and Asia Pacific Top Management chairman Alfred Ty.
Special guests included government officials led by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, DFA Undersecretary Frank Benedicto, Tourism Undersecretary Phineas Alburo and Nanjing City Mayor Hongkun Jiang. The diplomatic corps was represented by China’s Consul General He Shi Jing and his wife, Honorary Consul of Russia Armi Garcia and Honorary Consul of Sweden Jose Sala.
Invitees sipped excellent wines as they savored a selection of sumptuous appetizers such as salmon, cheese rolls, toasties, kebabs and open sandwiches.
A lively band that played Latin music contributed to the success of the evening, not to mention the full moon in all its’ splendor, which provided a truly spectacular setting amidst the thousand glittering lights of the Queen City of the South.
Whether for cocktails or a night cap, Blu Bar is the perfect place to start or end a wonderful evening.
dark_knight_detectve July 13th, 2008, 09:30 AM Cebu to send three teams to POF regional meet (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080712186&type=2)
Sunday, July 13, 2008
Cebu will be sending three boys football team to the Philippine Olympic Festival-Visayas Qualifying event in Dumaguete City later this month.
The Freeman learned that Cebu would have two squads in the 17-under division and the other for the 14-under division, the division where Cebu won the national title over Iloilo last year.
Don Bosco College again will banner the 14-under squad and get reinforcement from Abellana National School (ANS).
Joselito Bono will coach the 14-under squad this time, as Coach Glenn Ramos (last year’s winning coach) will be handling another team.
Mario Ceniza and Francis Ramirez, on the other hand, will be coaching the two 17-under squads. Palarong Pambansa players from Springdale will likely play for Ceniza and ANS booters will be suit up for Ramirez.
Because the POF represents the LGUs, one of the two boys’17-under squad will represent Cebu City and the other will play for Cebu Province.
As of this writing, all the lineups in the three squads are still not official.
The top two teams in the Visayas qualifying meet will compete in the POF National Finals in Cagayan de Oro in October.
Meanwhile, Coach Glenn Ramos is currently forming a team that will play in the Philippine Football Federation Men’s Open Regional finals, tentatively set from August 8 to 10 here in Cebu.
Cebu, Bacolod and Iloilo teams will vie for a ticket to the national finals in this tournament and will join host Dumaguete City (as representatives of Visayas) in the finale set later this year. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol

dark_knight_detectve July 13th, 2008, 09:54 AM Guv seeks valid reasons for continued operations of hydropower plant ("http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080712198&type=2)
Sunday, July 13, 2008
Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia asked officials of the Cebu Electric Cooperative to present to the Kawasan Falls Technical Working Group valid reasons for them to be allowed to continue the operations of the hydropower plant.
Cebeco reportedly failed to present evidence that it has an agreement with the local government unit of Badian for the establishment of the hydro electric power plant.
The plant was built by Cebeco in the early 1990s before the time of former governor and now Rep. Pablo “Pabling” Garcia.
In a meeting recently at the Capitol, Cebeco representative Concordio Quisaot said that as of the moment, he could not present any document to prove that there is an existing agreement between his company and the Badian municipal government.
Garcia said that Cebeco should present convincing arguments that there is a pre-existing contract with the municipality.
Earlier, the TWG was tasked to have a meeting with CEBECO officials to determine whether it is necessary that the plant will continue to be situated within the falls’ premises.
The TWG, which is handling the development plan of the falls, has come up with some measures as well as development in the area. It is eyeing an increase in the entrance fees for visitors from P10 to P20 per person to fund for the implementation of the eco-tourism development of the falls.
Security concerns at the falls were also recommended in the development plan, including the ban on liquors considering that most accidents there involved drunk people diving from the cliff.
There’s also a plan to put up lights and benches along the trail leading to the falls and to install handrails, the design and materials of which will blend with the nature.
The handrails will ensure the safety of trekkers up to the third level of the falls. If plans would push through, a cooperative will operate a restaurant/sari-sari store in the area. — Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/LPM
dark_knight_detectve July 13th, 2008, 10:01 AM A tasteful adventure in Cebu (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080712176&type=2)
IN MY BASKET By Lydia D. Castillo
Sunday, July 13, 2008
Every time we visit Cebu, we go on a gustatory adventure. We were there for the highly successful Cebu Business Month Tourism Forum, chaired by Mila Espina, and fully supported by both the private and government sectors of the province.
At the Shangri-La Mactan Resort , we had the pleasure of having lunch specially prepared for us by French Chef Luca, at the hotel’s outlet facing the sea, Acqua. We put ourselves entirely in his creative hands and what came out was about the best lunch one can ever have. A trio of appetizers – marinated salmon in orange sauce, rolled Parma ham and eggplant with ricotta cheese and basil emulsion and thinly sliced beef with parmesan cheese – started our meal. Then came ravioli with cepes mushrooms in gorgonzola cheese and black olive tagliatelle with prawns and cherry tomatoes. The piece de resistance was a duo of sautéd fillet of Chilean seabass with zucchini and saffron sauce and a medallion of US beef on a bed of arugula leaves with cepes mushrooms and parmesan cheese. Not one of us could resist the dessert – tiramisu of mascarpone cheese cream with chocolate, espresso and lady finger biscuits. Truly a fine dining event.
Still in Mactan, dinner was at one of the outlets of popular chain Krua Thai, where we enjoyed crispy fish and mango salad, the phad thai enveloped in scrambled eggs, and fish fillet with flavored sauce.
Then we crossed Mandawe and got to the city proper, checking in at the Marco Polo hotel, where we always feel like we are at home. Marissa of SM treated us to dinner at Blu, a sky top restaurant that has just been opened. Blu is in fact a blue room, the color giving the place a cool ambiance, most conducive to a relaxing evening. Marco Polo’s Executive Chef (also responsible for the ‘best buffet breakfast in town’ at the Coffee Shop, as many guests enthused), is Luke Gagnon while the Blu chef is Juanito Abangan. A most refreshing soup of guava and ginger primed us for the different main courses we selected from the extensive menu – seared scallops with mushroom flan, fried leeks, herbs and prosciutto emulsion, perfectly grilled Australian lamb chops with mashed potatoes and the incomparable US Angus beef ribs. Perfect!
In the course of our four-day stay we managed to visit two supermarkets – Metro Gaisano and SM, where we were given a tour of the group’s new North Wing, a massive structure as all SMs are. Comparing prices with those in Metro Manila, we found not much difference, although some seafood is more expensive. Meat (pork and beef – Monterey and Bonus ) ranges from P182 to P372 a kilo with Magnolia chicken at P99 a kilo. The wing also has various food outlets – Bread Talk, Pizza Hut, among them. We were told Café Laguna will open soon.
Metro Gaisano in the Ayala Mall is loaded with items used for special cooking – bulgur at P175.75 a pack, sun-dried tomatoes from Brazil for P161.50, rolled oats, canned veggies and sauces, the French Bonne Maman brand of fruit sauces at P249.50 per. Here pork steak is priced at P180 a kilo, beef rib eye at P380 and ground beef at P220. Rustan’s is in the course of putting the final touches to their supermarket for its upcoming opening.
In the wet markets like the old reliable Carbon in downtown Cebu, pork starts at P130 while beef is sold from P160. Of course there are the usual danggit, longganiza and pasalubong items. Along the roads are still the barbecue tiendas, the bangko-bangko (benches) where a variety of grilled and cooked food is served. We wanted to buy those Belgian chocolate cookies from Don Merto’s but we were told they have closed shop.
When what you have in your basket seems not enough for pasalubong, the Mactan airport is a good place to buy some, like the pastille de crema, which is only available there.
One will not go hungry in Cebu. Neither will one miss what are available in Manila. Cebu is a big city with equally massive offerings, from food to clothes to furniture, to hotels and restaurants.

dark_knight_detectve July 13th, 2008, 10:02 AM Caohagan, Lapu-Lapu’s Secret (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080712136&type=2)

Caohagan Island, up until 14 years ago, was a quiet village whose main source of livelihood was fishing. Although the men still thrive on the bounty of the sea, the women now contribute widely to the family’s income, thanks to their productive pastime.
Quilting is an art that may not be common among us Filipinos, but in an island off the coast of Lapu-Lapu City, this is the source of livelihood for its women.
Costing around P7,000 to P15,000 per piece, depending on its size, one can’t help but appreciate the hard work spent and the intricacy of the stitches worked into the quilt. Indeed, each quilt is a masterpiece and the time devoted for finishing each art-piece (approximately three months) and the creativity that goes with every work is worth every centavo being asked for.
Caohagan Island, up until 14 years ago, was a quiet village whose main source of livelihood was fishing. Although the men still thrive on the bounty of the sea, the women now contribute widely to the family’s income, thanks to their productive pastime.
The transformation happened when Japanese Katsuhiko Sakiyama decided to adopt the island, putting up the Caohagan Island Club, Inc. His wife, Jongko, taught the women the art of quilting. Most of the finished products are exported to Japan where it is sold twice the local selling price.
“We benefit a lot from this project because aside from getting a share of the earnings, part of the proceeds would go to a fund that will be used to sponsor deserving high school graduates to pursue their university studies and also for the hospitalization of any resident who falls ill,” said Helen Samson, a quilter for 14 years.
The materials are provided for free by the island’s benefactor, including the cloth, needles and thread. “We don’t spend anything, just our time,” said Samson. “We are not forced to work everyday. Everything goes according to our pace.”
At present, there are 80 women involved in the project and more than 200 families benefit from it.
Aside from quilting, Caohagan is also blessed with a rich supply of seafood, although the prices are not as blissful for a local tourist.
Soft-shelled lobsters, locally known as mantaha, would cost around P300 per piece, while local abalones would cost P3,000 per container, each container having close to a dozen pieces of abalone. Baby octopuses, locally known as tabugok, clams and other shellfish are available by vats at P300. Of course, cooking these fares is part of what you’ll be paying, and they will cook it broiled, grilled, boiled or sautéed in vinegar and soy sauce. Those who have special cooking preferences can always give instructions to the cook.
However, I would not advise coming to this island paradise if seafood is the only reason. The 45-minute travel is simply not worth it, besides the prices of live seafood in Caohagan are comparable to that of local suppliers in mainland Cebu. However, the peaceful atmosphere and the feeling of seclusion and exclusivity may sound attractive to the solitude seeker.
An overnight stay would also prove to be taxing. Aside from the P70 entrance fee collected upon stepping on the pristine shores of the island, each cottage would cost a lofty sum of P1,900 for one person or if there are two of you P1,700 each. And don’t even ask about the cost if you want your meals to be included in the package (spoiler: P2,300 per person for three meals).
The island has no electricity but at night they would turn on a communal generator which would light up several common structures. The generator is available from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., so it would be an early night’s rest for you.
Should you choose to stay for a brief period, cottages are available at P100. And if you feel like you want to be serenaded, there are groups who might render a few classic hits for a fee.
Caohagan Island can be reached by boat from Marigondon port (fare: P30) or at Dapdap port (near Vista Mar). Should you wish to rent one, you can arrange it with the boat-operator at the dock of Punta Engaño for P2,500 (20-seater boat) or P3,500 (60-seater boat).

SleMarKen July 13th, 2008, 06:28 PM OH, I'm not worried about it, I was just curious about Colon that people I know always stop me from going there even while I was with them, Heck, I walked down Atlanta's underground and downtown many times before while I was there and i am still around right now obviously and still in one piece. What's colon to me??LMAO I was even almost mugged by a couple of jamaican men that time.. Just picture someone in dread lock, in a gangster looking outfit following you around and asking for some money...city"
Colon is just a normal place, no one is prohibited to go there because it's not safe. Sa Cebu, sa Colon man gud ang daghang cases sa mga snatchers pero it is far lower compared to Tondo, quiapo or Cubao in Manila

Figaro opens another branch in Cebu (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/07/14/life/figaro.opens.another.branch.in.cebu.html)

POISED to brew nothing less but fresh and aromatic blends true to European café tradition while staying near to its aficionados, Figaro puts up a café in Cebu’s newest dining alley, The Walk in Asiatown IT Park.
Being the third branch in Cebu, Figaro in The Walk aims to cater to Cebu’s night owls to stay close to the ICT community.
Giving more to its costumers and taking advantage of its street side location, the branch will be open to serve breakfast and will stay open until midnight.
“Cebu needs a Figaro that is located near the hotels and the IT community,” said Janice Go, Figaro franchisee who trained in the Manila training center together with her opening crew.
Figaro offers its signature coffee blend, “Figaro House Reserve,” its famous line of Figaro Frost (regular and light versions), breakfast, pasta, sandwiches and pastries.
Now on its 15ht year, Figaro’s thrust is to open more branches in the Visayas and Mindanao area. So far, Figaro is present in Iloilo, Bacolod, Davao, Cebu and soon in Cagayan de Oro.
The coffee shop opened in Ayala’s Gloretta Mall as a small café born out of a hobby among friends who all loved coffee and travel. It expanded through franchising and received an ISO 9001:200 certification for Franchising Services, the first in the country.
By expanding in the Vismin area, Figaro has 70 branches in the country and two in Shanghai, China.
Franchises in secondary cities are usually awarded to franchisees who live in the area. “Local knowledge is important,” said Irene Lucas, country operations manager.
“We get a lot of applicants especially for tourist destinations, but we prefer locals who can operate it hands-on, speak the local dialect, and know the community,” Lucas said.
She said, “its not just having the financial requirements. It’s about loving coffee and having a passion for people. (JSC)
diehardbisdak July 13th, 2008, 06:36 PM La Mesa Grill hits Cebu (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=20080713124)
Philstar Online

Optimistic with Cebu's dynamic business environment and rapidly evolving urban lifestyle, a Manila-based restaurant company decided to invest in the area by opening its first Vis-Min branch in SM City Cebu.
La Mesa Grill is a food venture of restaurateur Rikki Dee who at the same time owns 76 fastfood outlets and 29 restaurants in Manila alongside business partner Senator Francis Pangilinan under FRD Food and Spices Incorporated.
Recently, this Manila-based company partnered with Cebuano businessmen Edwin Ortiz and Ato Alvarez which operates under LM Grill Cebu Corp. to open La Mesa Grill in Cebu.
The term of operation for La Mesa Grill is under a joint partnership venture with FRD Food and Spices Inc. and LM Grill Cebu Corp., said Ortiz and Alvarez in an interview.
Ortiz discussed that opening a branch outside Metro Manila posed as a big challenge for their partners in Manila who were unfamiliar with the discerning Cebuano clientele.
But eventually, they were surprised that even with its sophisticated interiors; it was able to attract a number of diners already.
“The reception that we have been getting from the market so far is great and we have already noticed insufficiency of space as this branch has been doing even better than in Manila. At first, Rikki was scared because the outlet looked elegant and classy with the showcase of Cebuano products and furniture but it went well,” said Ortiz.
He added that this is a proof that Cebuanos’ tastes has already changed along with the adoption of a more urban lifestyle brought about by the rapid development of the city.
“Cebuanos are known to be economical but now Cebuanos’ tastes have changed. They have become more adventurous when it comes to food and they prefer to eat out. So in the food business, it’s no longer all about affordability anymore. A restaurant these days have to offer great food and dining experience because of the stiff competition,” Ortiz stressed.
La Mesa Grill’s concept was integrated with the Korean, Japanese and Australian food establishments’ style of grilling food right at your own table but incorporated with a Filipino twist with its setting and dining experience similar to that of our native “ihaw-ihaw.”
Currently, the restaurant has three branches in the country, two of which are in Manila and the first one was opened at the SM Mall of Asia fronting the Manila Bay and the other is in Trinoma.
Ortiz said that after opening in SM City Cebu’s Northwing and catering to clients from classes A, B, and C, they are now looking at strategic areas to expand the business and confirmed that they will soon be putting up more La Mesa Grill branches in the city and even outside Cebu.
“The market is very encouraging so we are sure to open more outlets in the future to cater to the needs of the clientele. We are still trying to be careful even if sales are good but so far La Mesa Grill has been welcomed well by Cebuanos,” said Ortiz.
This year, La Mesa Grill will open two additional branches in Glorietta and SM Megamall while plans of bringing the concept to San Francisco in California and Dubai are being discussed in the pipeline. – Rhia de Pablo

Cebuski78 July 14th, 2008, 07:25 AM Night market opens
AFTER two postponements, the Colon night shopping festival finally opened last Friday despite threat of rain.
George Chu, president of the Cebu City Downtown Revitalization Project, said the organizers had to come up with a “proper system” to avoid complaints from businesses in the area, and got the necessary clearances from City Hall and the City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) board before holding the festival.
The ongoing festival aims to promote the small and medium entrepreneurs in the downtown area and bring back interest in Colon, part of the old business district in Cebu City.
“Hopefully, we can sustain this to revive downtown’s old glory and (promote) Colon Street as a world-class night market like other old streets in Asia,” he said.
Although part of the Cebu Business Month 2008 in June, the festival opened only last Friday. It was originally set to open on July 14, was postponed to June 22 and got moved again.
More organized
Having learned from the previous two Colon Shopping Festivals, Chu said the Downtown Revitalization Project Team has come up with a “well-controlled and more organized setup” for the festival’s night market this month.
Before the opening, the Cebu City Government—together with representatives of some schools, business establishments and vendor associations—held a “Cebu Heritage Walk” from the Colon Monument (an obelisk marking Colon as the oldest street in the country) to a space on the road in front of the old Plaza Fair.
Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Edward Gaisano, who considers Colon as a “street of nostalgia and history,” lauded the joint efforts of the government and the private sector in reviving the oldest street in the country.
The dream of reviving Colon Street resulted in the formation of the Downtown Revitalization Project that Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama spearheaded.
The festival features a night market that will open at 5 p.m. and close at 2 a.m. from July 10 to August 10. Only 170 vendors are allowed to occupy the tents put up on the center line from Junquera St. to Colon St., specifically fronting Gaisano Metro.
Subsidy
Public utility jeepneys still ply these roads and neighboring establishments can still enjoy the influx of consumers, said Chu.
He added that tenants of the night market will only pay P150 per day for the electricity, cleaning, security and other operational expenses as the Cebu City Government will be subsidizing their taxes.
These tenants are small and medium entrepreneurs selling accessories, bags, shoes and street food, among others. About 70 percent of them are regular participants in previous Colon Shopping Festivals.
Every year, Chu said organizers seek ways to improve the festival through better compliance to security and traffic regulations.
“After this, we want to focus on vendors who have been dislocated for selling illegal items, such as pirated DVDs. We want to eliminate illegal vending that has increased significantly in the downtown area,” Chu said.
He admitted that the festival’s major challenge has always been on how to strictly implement the rules since most of the vendors are “unschooled” and some would “sell” their rights in the night market to other vendors.
He also pointed out that many vendors would fight each other over a tent since the night market promises huge return of investment.
“For vendors selling street food, they would earn around P1,000 a night from selling puso (hanging rice) at P2 (alone). Others selling various items would earn around P500 to P1,000 per night,” said Chu, who makes regular rounds at the night market.

Ejames July 14th, 2008, 02:46 PM reasons why i love cebu:
( a current student here from USC - but the place where i trully live is
somewhere down south-mindanao)
1.) urban yet i can't feel that hustle and bustle stuff
2.) people are very approachable, easy to get along with
3.) rich heritage background
4.) BEACHES (even though most of it just seen it in pics and heard of it)
5.) well, the richest province
6.) can best represent the Philippines (tourism)
7.) streets
8.) _________kayo na mag.add (hehhe)
the only reason i hate cebu:
1.) basura all over (pero not to the extent na marumi but in colon..hmm)
i just compared it to other places- (one is davao)

"The honorable senator's presence in the event will add prestige to the 10th World Championships and the eskrima community for he is known not just an ardent supporter of Filipino martial arts but also an undefeated tournament fighter during his fighting years," matud pa ni Cañete.

I love Cebu's discrete low and mid-rise skyline. Nindot man gud kay dli macover ang mountains, which gives the city a somewhat eco-friendly feel, unlike HongKong which may have the best skyline ever but unfortunately in most vantage points in ground/sea level, the hills aren't visible, I've seen HK pics in the 60s and 70s and the place was very picturesque, now what makes it stunning is the steel and concrete and not the steep hills and cliffs. But nevertheless, I'd love to see some hi-rises cluster in a future financial/business district (here's hoping this would be the future of SRP).
Kanang gubot sa Waterfront wala pod ko kasabot ana but I've read it via paid advertisements in newspapers (sunstar) from both parties. Oddly enough, the issue, while already reported in newspapers eons ago (whilst eliciting only yawns and faint reactions from the public), is quite dormant in the press as I have yet to read a recent article about it or maybe I'm not looking hard enough.. hehehe.. But regardless, for the sake of the hotel's image I hope it will be resolved in the proper forum soon. From the little things that I have heard and read about it, Waterfront is trying to acquire a certain property but unfortunately they can't seem to settle a deal with the owners. The one thing I have difficulty understanding is that MCIAA is also involved, so may 3 parties yata dito.. I hope someone here knows the issue better and enlighten me and everyone else here.

but if otherwise, well, i dont want to think about it...

Sinjin P. July 14th, 2008, 06:32 PM ^ In fairness sa MMDA, dili tinuod nga Marikina ra ang gipalabi kay kita g'yud ko sa ilang mga proyekto all over the metro.
Wind Shear July 14th, 2008, 06:33 PM We are proud of Cebu but there are those who don't come from Cebu who hate Cebu but live and are employed here. I know of one obnoxious Tagala who told me: "I really don't understand you Cebuanos.. ang babagal nyo.." I can't answer her back because she's supposed to be the No. 2 boss in our institution but there and then I wanted to do to her what Lapu-Lapu did to a banyaga in 1521.. but then I consoled myself, I will let her insult the Cebuanos more and more and let another Cebuano put her in kingdom come.
You can say that, in a sarcastic way.
And of course, Cebu is the best place to have business... with pleasure. :-)
Blair July 14th, 2008, 06:53 PM Aboitiz invests P2.3 B in Cebu realty projects
By MALOU M. MOZO
CEBU CITY — Property developer Aboitizland Inc. has earmarked P2.3 billion for real estate projects in Cebu this year.
AboitizLand Inc. President and Chief Operating Officer Andoni Aboitiz announced the company’s plan to improve its presence in the commercial and condominium property market in Cebu, beginning with the development of an urban village called Persimonn.
Aboitiz, in an interview, said Persimonn accounts for the largest capital expenditure of the company for which an estimated P2 billion will be spent for the four-tower residential condominium that will have commercial centers and other amenities.
AboitizLand will start soon its Phase 2 development of a upscale residential project in the southern part of Metro Cebu, called the Kishanta.
The company is going to invest an estimated P150 million in the horizontal development of the 12-hectare Kishanta subdivision.
Aboitiz said there is still a large untapped market for residential units in Cebu, and so the company is mulling to expand its land banks.
"Cebu will always be an attractive market for developers," he said, adding this optimism has not discouraged by AboitizLand’s expansion mode despite threat of consumer budget tightening and the expected rise in interest rates in the consumer lending.
While the company is hitting active markets in the real estate sector, particularly in residential units -- with lot-only or house-and-lot offerings -- Aboitizland is also venturing, for the first time, into office building project that caters to the needs of business process outsourcing (BPO) companies.
In this sector, the company already kicked off with the construction of a BPO building at the Mactan Export Zone (MEZ-2) dubbed iMEZ.
The five-story building is projected to be completed by March next year with an estimated investment of R160 million.
iMEZ is located at the 1.8-hectare expansion area of the Pueblo Verde commercial center fronting the Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ) 2 in Lapu-Lapu City.
With its design complementing the modern Filipino-Spanish atmosphere of the entire commercial bloc, iMEZ will also house coffee shops, fastfood outlets, casual dining places and bakery or pastry stores at the ground floor, within an area of about 550 square meters.
The second, third, fourth and fifth levels of the building, with a combined area of 4,000 square meters, will house BPO companies.
Apart from its proximity to hospitals, hotels and airport, iMEZ is located in an economic zone.

Another case of crab mentality? :bash:
If only he knows the recent history of Cebu... tsk tsk tsk...
--------------------------------
On the other side, I've been in Cebu for four years (I'm from Iligan) and life's enjoyable and yes... sometimes, this place has also unusual quirks. You know what, during the recent jeepney strike, the traffic becomes heavier.
so_1 July 15th, 2008, 05:46 AM WOW.. number one ang CEBU???
galing.. can i know the reasons why??
para at least i have the knowledge to
boast sa aking mga kababayan(Cotabateño).
para maingganyo sila punta dito.
being no. 1 in a survey is like icing on the cake.
they have to eat the whole bunch to experience how it taste.
we are the underdogs here. no offense, based on experience
going to imperial city for a training. they treat as 2nd class citizens.
sad to say those who criticize us for being tongue twisted are those bunch of idiots who haven't experience being in the queen city.which i consider low class ignoramous.sad to say they are filipino like us. i appreciate our bosses who are well traveled, they love our place, who believe in us cebuanos as competitive and dependently hardworking.that goes also to the whole vizmin area.

Well, we cannot please all people. As long as we do what we do best and do not hurt anyone or do anything wrong.
Padayon Cebu! :)
AmbutLang July 15th, 2008, 09:05 AM Pila man ang percentage sa statistical margin of errors sa nakalainlain survey sa AIM? Can they make-up their minds which is which is the real survey? They should give the money they spent, to the victims of typhoon Frank and do the survey on voluntary base para it comes from inner guts.

Hong Kong Plaza. City Hall made a wrong move I think when it suspended for 6 months the construction of this hotel. Let's just hope that the owner will still continue its construction now that the prices of oil and other products have drastically risen (and will still rise in the next 6 months)...
