Emall expansion set to begin next summer

Cebu Central Realty Corp. plans to develop a 5,000 square-meter property as an extension of Elizabeth Mall in downtown Cebu City.

Lawyer Augusto Go, owner of Elizabeth Mall, said yesterday that work on the three-story building, where the University of Cebu (UC) Allied Engineering School stands today, is set to begin in summer of 2006.

Go hopes to complete the mall extension by March 2007 to accommodate the growing number of mall-goers.

“There is a demand for more space,” Go said of the mall, which is visited by an average of 40,000 to 60,000 persons a day.

However, he revealed that the tenants have observed that while sales have gone up, the number of items sold has decreased, indicating that the economy is not doing well.

Aside from the mall, Go said expansion work on the University of Cebu (UC) campuses in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City and in Mandaue City are ongoing to accommodate the increasing number of enrollees.

Go observed the number of enrollees has increased in the past two years.

“The trend is there. (But) I’m not expanding in downtown (UC main) because of the peace and order problems,” he said.

Go, who is also UC president, said the UC Banilad expansion project is worth P89 million while the expansion of UC-Lapu-Lapu-Mandaue campus will cost P90 million.

“These will be one of the most modern campuses in the country,” Go added.

He said the improvements will not only include the infrastructure but also equipment as well.

Go said he is putting in a lot of investment in education because the country is now becoming a training place for workers who find work abroad.

“But I’m not proud of that. I would like the graduates to work in the Philippines,” he added.

However, he agreed with the observation that overseas Filipino workers are keeping the country’s economy afloat through their dollar remittances. (CYR)

nice... almost everything here in our country is growing/expanding! :okay: hoping to see all those great progress soon :D

ah ok. i didnt notice that when i went there last week. thnx.

i havnt been to velez lately bai slerz. pero my beloved Alma Mater i think has already realized that they need that facelift for good. mao cguro nagtigum cla daghan milliones for a one-time expansion and renovation of the hospital --- new ER and ward at the first floor, renovation of the 2nd floor and creation of 3rd floor of Private Pavillion South, renovation of the 3rd and 4th floor of Private Pavillion West, a new Out-Patient Dept, a new patient entrance, and the makeover of the external facade which has rot of age...

But of course, one thing will remain unchanged: The Velez trademark of quality medical education and provision of utmost patient care. After all, it is one of the best medical schools in the country, and was once one of the best hospitals, and Velez is poised to head on forward to keep abreast with the fast-changing pace of medical health services... :)

Pasko sa Sugbo lights up city
Published: 03 December 2005
by Neil Iosif Ilagan

A 104-FOOT Christmas tree lit up the Cebu City skyline last Thursday, marking the opening of the city's celebration of the Christmas Season.

Held at Fuente Osmeña, the city government's launch of Pasko sa Sugbo 2005 also featured band performances and words from the city's top officials.

The annual Chistmas street decor contest and other events will run throughout the month of December and into January when the Sinulog kicks off.

Among the most well-known of the competitions are Pasko sa V. Rama and Kasadya sa Plaza, where residents of V. Rama Avenue and those near Plaza Independencia decorate their houses with Christmas lights and other creative accessories for a chance to win prizes sponsored by the Cebu City government.

This year, the city added the: Kasadya sa Colon to include downtown establishments along the country's oldest road.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña led the traditional lighting ceremony of the Christmas tree put up by the M. Lhuillier chain of pawnshops.

REGARDING THE PLANNED EXPANSION OF THE MCIAA...

According to YAp, the Terminal II is already on the design stage (with the architects and engineers) and will take 6-8 months to complete.. Expected date of construction will be in mid or late 2006... It will take 3 years to complete, therefore expected year of inaguration will be 2009 or 2010..

The Terminal II will be built at the present Mactan Airbase, which is a property of the MCIAA.. Starting next year too, the Mactan Airbase site will be vacated in preparation for the ASEAN Summit which will be hosted by Cebu.. Dunno what they meant by "vacated."

@arnoldsa: IMO i think they will vacate the airbase to serve as the 'parking area' for the carriers of the heads-of-state.. as ive heard sa news b4, the carriers will stay here in cebu for the duration of the summit so they just cant let them stay at the terminal. but please correct me if im wrong... :)

also, where is the airbase located? i have no idea. hehehe

There's no exact details yet probably because these projects are still in the planning phase -- design, budgeting, bidding, etc..etc.. . However, Yap assured that the additional ramps/aerobridges would be built soon since these are really very urgent. In fact he said that it would just be in a matter of months..

In today's news:

Cebu Seag closing rites tonight at SM

Cebu hosting of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag) will come to a close tonight with an earnest closing ceremony at 6 p.m. at the SM City Cebu parking area.

The ceremonies will be attended by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmena and Gov. Gwen Garcia, who will also deliver their messages to the athletes.

The Cebu Seag Organizing Committee (Cebusoc) has prepared a heartfelt program in recognition to all Filipinos athletes who have fought mightily in bringing honor and glory to the country in the recent biennial meet.

“I would like to thank all the people who worked hard for the SEA Games. From the governor, to the mayors, sponsors and volunteers. The men and women in the background. Many thanks to all of you, said Guardo. “And most especially to all the Cebuanos who cheered mightily our athletes. Please go to SM City parking area tonight. Let’s all together celebrate this SEA Games championship.”

The turnover of the Seag banner and the extinguishing of the Seag friendship flames will also be done.

Cebu’s Diva Maria Donna will give a soulful song number for the biennial meet’s ‘Victory and Defeat Journey.”

The Seag opening and closing rites are directed by Ricky Ballesteros, Dolly Suzara, Junjet Primor, Victor Cuenco, Cinbth Orellano and Vic Eyao.

Right after the closing rites, a concert free to all will follow with the SRO Band, Southside and Orange and Lemons, whose song “Pinoy Ako” has served as the unofficial theme song of the Filipino athletes.

Urban Greening launched in Cebu

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with local government units, government agencies, and the academe to encourage and promote participation in the creation of Urban Greening Task Force. Dr. Isabelo Montejo, DENR regional executive director, said he was asked by Secretary Michael Defensor to fast track the Urban Greening Project in Cebu.

The MOA was signed on December 1 by Montejo, Eugenio Faelnar, ABC president; Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Director Dr. Carolino Mordeno; Rosario Aboitiz, Robert Go, president of Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI); as well as the Association of Senior Citizens and the SK Federation of Cebu. Under the MOA, the DENR would take the lead in implementing the project "to ensure the development and management of the environment in the urban areas."

The CCCI, for its part, will advocate for an increase in the use of plants and grasses in available areas and secure a nursery that would sell plants at low cost to CCCI members. The DepED will be mandated to establish a nursery in each school, promote advocacy among the stakeholders and integrate the program in the school's curriculum.

IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS
More power for Mactan soon
by Wilfredo Rodolfo III

Mactan Island would soon have more power to draw from with the activation of the Mactan-Cebu Interconnection Project (MCIP) on Sunday.

Once the project is fully operational, Mactan Island would have a total power supply of 200 megawatts (MW) of electricity coming from mainland Cebu, which would encourage companies at the Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) to expand and allow new companies to open, said Jules Alcantara, vice president of the National Transmission Corporation (Transco).

Power will start flowing to Mactan through the MCIP on December 15.

Alcantara said the new power line is also vital since the existing power line from Cebu feeding power to Mactan Island was overloaded.
The old power line, which runs underneath the first Mactan-Cebu Bridge, was designed to carry 48 MW, but had to bear 50 MW due to the power demands of the island.

The old power line will be decommissioned once MCIP is fully operational.

The MCIP will tap power from the Leyte-Cebu Interconnection Uprating Project (LCIUP), which started operations earlier this year and draws power from the geothermal power plants in Leyte Province.

Power is expected to flow freely from Mandaue to Mactan in time for the high demand for power due to the Christmas season.

The "point of delivery" for power for Metro Cebu will be from Banilad.

"This will also prevent the Visayan Electric Company (Veco) from getting low voltage because it does not have to share its power (from Banilad) with Mactan," Alcantara said.

Mactan currently has around 150 companies based in MEPZ, employing around 50,000 people.

The companies contribute around P2 billion to Cebu's economy through salaries and local supply purchases.

Shangri-la invests $6M for resort renovations

To keep up with the competition, Shangri-la’s Mactan Island Resort will invest about $6 million or more for the renovation of the five-star resort next year.

The amount is an addition to the $5 million that Shangri-la invested also for the resort’s renovations this year, Shangri-la’s Mactan Island Resort general manager Timothy Wright said.

Aside from its desire to meet the increasing expectation of its guests, the investment is also a manifestation of Shangri-la’s confidence in Cebu’s tourism industry.

“We are very positive about the country’s tourism. All our Shangri-las in the country-Makati, Edsa and Mactan-are undergoing renovations right now. The Tourism department is very aggressive and its target market approach is effective,” he said on the sidelines of the resort’s Christmas tree lighting on Friday.

The Department of Tourism, led by Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano, has narrowed down its marketing campaign to targeting the country’s “short-haul” markets, which include Korea, Japan and China.

Top 15

Wright was also proud to say that among all the Shangri-las in Asia, Shangri-la’s Mactan Island Resort was voted one of the top 15 hotels in Asia this year by international travel magazine, Condenast.

The resort was also voted the readers’ choice- most favorite resort in Asia by Time Magazine.

“Mactan Shangri-la has the friendliest staff among all the other Shangri-la chain,” he said.

Wright also dismissed rumors that Shangri-la and the newly opened Cebu Hilton Resort and Spa are competing head-on, saying Cebu Hilton’s operation has complimented Shangri-la’s.

“Competition is there but it is always healthy. Hilton’s opening has brought positive effects to Shangri-La because more airlines are flying to Cebu. Hilton’s opening has created a destination in this part of the province,” he said.

Wright said Shangri-la Mactan has enjoyed an average occupancy rate of 80 percent this year.

This is the “strongest since 2000.”

The renovation in Shangri-la Mactan includes the adventure zone, which is intended for the resort’s younger guests.

The zone will feature rope ladders and steep slides. (JBN)

well Cebu is definitely the most popular destination in the Philippines now. In a few more years, Davao will be included (ATF Forum is expected to put Mindanao on the tourism map just like it did Cebu in the 90's when it hosted ATF).

I still think our geography is partly to blame in the low tourist arrivals compared to other ASEAN nations. As most travel books say "It's outside the southeast asian mainstream travel route (at the other end of south china sea, already into the pacific).

Yup, the 2005 issue.

The top island last Nov 1004 is Bali but now it's Phuket.
Top 10 Asian ⁄ indian ocean islands
1. bali 86.4
2. phuket 82.6
3. maldives 81.1
4. seychelles 80.2
5. koh samui 79.4
6. mauritius 74.9
7. zanzibar 72.8
8. cebu, philippines 72.8
9. borneo 69.5
10. lombok, indonesia 67.8

Nov 2005 issue
1.Phuket 87.3
2.Bali 86.7
3.Mauritius 78.2
4.Maldives 77.6
5.Koh Samui, Thailand 75.3
6.Langkawi, Malaysia 74.4
7.Lombok, Indonesia 71.2
8.Cebu, Philippines 69.5
9.Seychelles 69.3
10.Borneo 65.7

The gainers are Phuket, Bali and Mauritius.
Langkawi is back.

Popularity wise, Phuket should be on top coz it is already a popular destination since then plus the fact about the Dec16 tragedy and so with Bali. Langkawi should be on top together with Bali and Phuket coz those are the three resorts islands that gained popularity simultaneously several years na. Mauritius did a good job.

For Cebu's case, it's still a starter.

Hotel sector optimistic
Growing market enough for all
despite opening of new properties

Although more properties are set to open next year, the hotel sector still appears bullish over prospects in 2006.

Marco Protacio, president of the Hotels, Resorts and Restaurants Association of Cebu (HRRAC) and general manager of Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, said the association welcomes the scheduled opening of more hotels in Cebu.

The opening of Marco Polo Plaza Hotel and Parklane International Hotel next year and the projected entry of Traders Hotel would help address the shortage in accommodations during the peak season, Protacio said.

"The business would continue to increase next year even if there's a new supply in the market," Cebu City Marriot Hotel general manager Karl Hudson told Cebu Daily News.

Hudson said there was enough business for all the properties.

"The business remains strong. The demand remains strong. Marriot is consistently over 80 percent occupancy," he said.

He noted that the demand for rooms would continue to grow in the coming years.
"And, even though there is new supply in the market, I feel confident that the pie is growing fast enough for everybody," he pointed out.

Protacio also noted that the occupancy during the peak and non-peak seasons for hotels was starting to level off.

This means, he said, that the difference between peak and non-peak seasons will slowly decline over the years.

However, he suggested that hotels and resorts consider offering more affordable packages to encourage more tourists to come during the off-peak season.

Protacio also noted that the tourism industry has been going strong this year.

"The year 2005 is very good for everybody. We've seen a significant increase in tourism arrivals," Protacio said.

For example, he said, Waterfront has been enjoying 17 percent growth in occupancy.

Even the month of November, which is usually off-peak, has record-breaking occupancy.

He noted that the hotels and resorts had been very busy these past months due to various major events held in Cebu, such as the Philippine Advertising Congress and the Southeast Asian Games.

According to Protacio, Cebu's hosting of the games has opened it up to more international sports events.

"Waterfront wants to help Cebu establish itself as the dance capital of Asia. Every year, Waterfront will be the home to the Cebu International Dance Sports Competition," he said.

The hosting of an international dance sports competition, he said, would benefit the tourism industry in Cebu.

"The practitioners of dance sports have money. The dance sports aficionados have money. These people have to eat. It's really good business to hold these type of events here," Protacio pointed out.

He noted that Cebu has bright prospects as far as sports tourism was concerned.

The tourism industry is looking at how to promote Cebu through sports events.

The holding of the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in Davao City next year would also benefit Cebu's tourism industry, he said.

"Definitely, there will be a spill-over of the ATF participants in Cebu. The HRRAC is also looking at the possibility of joining the exhibit. We may have a presence there," Protacio said.

HRRAC's participation in the ATF exhibit would enable the smaller properties in Cebu to promote themselves to the regional market, he added.

HRRAC also held its annual Food Festival over the weekend, attracting quite a number of people.

About 37 establishments joined this year's event. The annual event allows Cebuanos to have a taste of the cuisine available at the hotels, resorts and restaurants at affordable prices. /Irene R. Sino Cruz

I'm not surprised. Boracay just relied more on Manila. Boracay is very well promoted in Manila, I think somobra pa nga but they forgot to promote Boracay more in the international market. So a lot of Filipinos specialy from Manila thought that Boracay is well marketed internationally coz of it's great publicity in Philippine televisions, promos and others. So it doesn't mean if you promote a resort here in the Philippines then it will be known internationally.

PAL buys 18 aircrafts for refleeting program
By Aurelia l. Castro
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

MANILA - Philippine Airlines (PAL) inked a purchase agreement with Airbus yesterday for its fleet modernization program, which includes the acquisition of 18 units of Airbus A320 family aircrafts.

The deal, which is approximately $840-million, will allow the flag carrier to have fuel cost-saving aircrafts, said Jaime Bautista, president and chief operating officer of PAL in an interview yesterday.

Bautista said compared to other aircrafts that require different trainings for its airline crew, Airbus aircraft also has the advantage of “commonality” that would spare PAL from spending on trainings.

The signing of the agreement yesterday at Shangri-La, Makati included an order for nine brand-new A320 jets (with an option to add five more) each with 12 Mabuhay (business)-class and 144 economy-class seats and the latest in-flight entertainment system in both classes “further distinguishing PAL from competing carriers.”

In addition, PAL will also lease two brand-new A320s and two A319s from GE Commercial Aviation Services, said to be the world’s largest aircraft lessor.

“With this refleeting program, we might increase the frequency of our flights with our Cebu-Manila routes from our current seven flights a day to having a flight every hour a day,” he said.

Bautista added that the possibility of increasing the frequency of flights to Cebu would address the demand of the traveling market.

“It is still under study but it is not a far possibility,” he said.

The refleeting program will allow PAL to give better service offering, he added.

SAD NEWS: INTERATIONAL FILM ACADEMY IN MACTAN IS CANCELLED

Cancelled daw ang whole project ng bigfoot and I saw it on their streamers in the school a big background of "Project Cancelled". The man behind this cancellation is no other than Mayor Radaza.. oh what a sad story, Radaza sucks!! he is reportedly asking 40+ million for the tax. I don't know if that is true, but anyway the school will be converted na lang kuno into motel or hotel and the international film academy will be transferred to the south reclamation project.

yeah sad, very sad. your mayor shouldve deferred the tax first. so, it can attract more investors.

take it easy guys, in my opinion it´s all politics. i guess now they will negotiate the tax issue anew......building a new academy sounds absurd, like spending double money, without selling the "pink box" yet......and besides, it would set big foots´plans back by years. i reccon, before he constructs a new building in cebu, he will rather consider pulling-out to india, china or elsewhere.

CwEoBwU
December 7th, 2005, 10:45 AM
it's so sad to hear that. you know, it is the second disappointing experience of michael gleissner, the owner of bigfoot, in cebu.

the first one was when his private plane wasn't allowed to land at mactan airport because of insufficient documents. he was very upset with that.

second is this. he was applying i think of special privileges just like economic zones are enjoying for the film academy. but it didn't succeed because of the "taga-bukid" thoughts of whoever decided for the rejection of michael's request.

CwEoBwU
December 7th, 2005, 10:54 AM
haven't you observed near the place is already infested with so many squatters? in a few years, that place surrounding the academy will be full of squatters. is the mayor doing something there aside from kicking investors away?

also, that place going to shangri-la, a lot of migrants from other places have started to flock there. mayor! wake-up!

Is this the Mayors Last term? If it is, it figures. He wants to make a quick buck before he goes kaput!

Cant you see the timing? Just when everything is ready to launch...the Mayor Corners the Business owner by asking a bribe, thinking that Bigfoot has no choice anymore but pursue the project rather than loose millions. But alas! Bigfoot has millions of $ more to burn rather than rot on a stinkin hole together with the corrupt politicians for years, they opted for the more expensive but sure way of doing business. I just hope Cebu SRP and Mayor Osmeña will be able to appease the exec.

CwEoBwU
December 7th, 2005, 10:59 AM
michael had plans to pull out his business in cebu back then due to that first incident. the crazy officials in mactan are really trying to test his patience.

why is it in our country that we try too hard to invite investors in and when they have settled, we don't take care of them?

December 7th, 2005, 11:06 AM
on the brighter side... hopefully my japanese boss will finally decide to put up a software development branch in cebu. we are engaged in virtual reality and medical applications software. it definitely will be the first in cebu and perhaps the entire philippine archipelago. it has to be in cebu most definitely, hehehehe, because i'm from there.

CwEoBwU
December 7th, 2005, 11:16 AM
my japanese boss really likes cebu a lot and he finds the people there very nice, that includes me, hehehehe. the people are so smiling daw, even the dogs smile at him 'kuno'.

he had the chance to stay at marriott and one morning he went to one adjacent poor barangay near the hotel and he realized that aside from the smiles, help makes a big difference.

we are already experimenting with a tokyo-cebu collaboration. we have one engineer working from home in cebu and if this proves satisfactory, off to cebu we go. it feels nice to do something good for your city and for the country as a whole.

yeah, i heard about that news... was it last year? my friend told me Bigfoot in Ramos office will be closin' or sumthin like that but some say it was just a rumor. but now they're expanding. i'm quite puzzled because at that time the IAFTV in Mactan was still on initial stage of construction. Their brand-new campus in mactan was highly publicized abroad. i just can't believe why they come up with such decision to close the facility... :?

btw, here's their press release last Nov. 19

IAFT'S OPEN HOUSE A SUCCESS

The International Academy of Film and Television opened the doors of its brand-new facilities to the public for the first time last Nov. 19, Saturday.

The open house was a monumental success, drawing a crowd of over three hundred people. For the first time, IAFT's jaw-dropping lobby was presented to the public. Potential students and those curious to know more about Cebu's best kept secret toured IAFT's many amenities, including the soundstage, classrooms and labs, production offices, post production facilities, and editing bay.

Meanwhile, IAFT's week-long free lecture series concluded with talks on directing, selling your script, producing, and a brief look at the history of film. These talks gave the attendees an overview of the kind of education the school is offering on January.

i have high hopes to hear great developments of this company amid the reported cancellation of this project... thanks for this info :D

6. mauritius 74.9

8. cebu, philippines 72.8
9. borneo 69.5
10. lombok, indonesia 67.8

Nov 2005 issue

2.Bali 86.7
3.Mauritius 78.2
4.Maldives 77.6
5.Koh Samui, Thailand 75.3
6.Langkawi, Malaysia 74.4
7.Lombok, Indonesia 71.2
8.Cebu, Philippines 69.5
9.Seychelles 69.3
10.Borneo 65.7

The gainers are Phuket, Bali and Mauritius.
Langkawi is back.

Popularity wise, Phuket should be on top coz it is already a popular destination since then plus the fact about the Dec16 tragedy and so with Bali. Langkawi should be on top together with Bali and Phuket coz those are the three resorts islands that gained popularity simultaneously several years na. Mauritius did a good job.

For Cebu's case, it's still a starter.

and convert the existing facility into a hotel? hmmmm... it's a good spot though. sayang nga lang. at least it's not totally mactan's loss. if you look at the other side of the story, Bigfoot company was applying for an IT-zone to enjoy tax holiday AFTER they completed the film acad facility. the local officials turned down their application, pointing out that Bigfoot could have applied for an IT-Zone before the construction of the IAFTV if their intention was to put up an IT facility. and there are just too many IT-zones in mactan island. Bigfoot threatens to pull out of Mactan with gov't refusal to OK ecozone status
BusinessWorld

Jun P. Tagalog

Cebu City - Bigfoot Global Solutions, Inc. is threatening to defer expansion plans in Mactan after the Lapu-Lapu City council denied its request to endorse its two-hectare property as an information technology economic zone.

Joseph Mercado, chief executive, threatened to pull out of Mactan and relocate to the Cebu mainland. "Why stick it out in a location where its officials are not supportive of our business? We will locate somewhere else," he said.

The company launched last week its International Academy of Film and Television, which is located within its property in Lapu-Lapu City.

Mr. Mercado said they invested $6 million in the property.

The 8,200-square-meter film academy is equipped with soundstages, recording and Foley studios, Dolby-certified sound mixing theater and final cut pro digital editing suites. It also has a dormitory, coffee shop, pool, gymnasium and spa.

"Our expansion plans include installing two more soundstages which will be twice bigger than the existing one. Definitely, it will cost millions of dollars," Mr. Mercado said.

He said they want to be accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority as an IT park to save on importation costs for equipment.

Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Alley B. Berdin, finance committee chairman, said the council had denied Bigfoot's request for endorsement because there are already several economic zones in Lapu-Lapu City. The Cebu Light Industry Park has not even been filled up.

"I don't think it would be to the interest of the city if we approve all applications for economic zones or IT park. There are too many firms already enjoying tax holidays from the city government," he said.

An endorsement from the city council is one of the requirements for registration.

i have one word for all this mess. BRIBERY! they're worried about tax collection but they're not thinkin' about BigFoot's expansion in Mactan can lead to improvement of the island's tourism (worldwide exposure), increase business activities, more opportunities for labor workers and all those stuff. geez.

it's still a good decision in transferring IAFTV to SRP Cebu City. i bet Mayor Tom welcomed the company's move. it's on the Bay area and within the vicinity of the Department of Tourism.. so, we shouldn't be sad. we'll just stab those Opon politikos to death ha.

Yeah, at least it will get a better publicity since I'm sure that Mayor Thomas is willing to invest millions on it.

Another thing, this IAFTV thing will surely ignite the construction and investments in the SRP.. Yehey!

Mactan’s Shangri-La Voted One Of The World’s Top Resorts

The ranking was based on the poll it conducted from the travellers around the world, the Reader’s Choice Awards. It asked its readers as to which resorts in the world that top in their choice as regards to the following criteria: Activities/Facilities, Food/Dining, Location, Overall Design, Rooms, Service.

They had to rate each candidate, criterion by criterion, as excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor. Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort & Spa was ranked 9th in Asia with a high rating at 90.5% and the only Shangri-La property to join in the elite circle of world’s best resorts. It is the crown jewel of Cebu’s growing and robust hospitality industry.

Recently, the resort is already setting aside multi-million dollars to upgrade its facilities and renovating some rooms to further enhance its appeal to discriminating travellers who want no less than the best comfort they could ever have.

The resort was also voted the readers’ choice- most favorite resort in Asia by Time Magazine. It has maintained its average occupancy rate at high 80%. Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort & Spa is the country’s first international deluxe resort hotel.

yup, I'm not kidding. My father knows it too with cable cars pa nga. Subic also has those big letters on their mountain... but it wouldn't degrade Cebu for that reason. But untill now, it's one of their dreams, to develop those mountains into a world renowned attraction.

but I don't think so.. that huge structures like CEbu letters and that Sto. Niño statue would be possible IMO. coz we have powerful tphoons here where LA doesn't have and so with Rio.

I think it's one of the reasons why they did't pushed through for that project.

WHAT? THE FILM ACADEMY TO PULL OUT OF CEBU?

MANILA, November 25, 2005 (STAR) INSIDE CEBU By Bobit S. Avila - We got a lot of positive text comments about our article on the International Academy of Film and Television (IAFT), mostly from our Cebuano friends who are very proud that this industry has now come to our shores. After all, Filipinos are fond of American films and what better than to have these films done in our own country for the simple reason that it is cheaper to do them here! As we?ve said, the reason why the IAFT opened in Cebu is the fact that as far as filmmaking is concerned, Cebuanos are virtually virgins. After all, it has been two generations since the demise of the Visayan movies.

Being born into a family of movie operators since the days of the silent movies, then to the "talkies" and finally to Technicolor and stereo sound, I had the privilege of seeing the rise and fall of many movie moguls, both local and international. I predict that soon, the IAFT would even drop "Film" from its name because pretty soon everyone would be making movies using digital videos rather than film.

If you didn?t know, films are expensive to purchase, process and store? and yes, they are taxed to death by the linear meter by the government. Now it is a matter of whether movie operators would spend a small fortune in shifting from the present film projector to a digital projector. When that happens, you can say that this would be the final revolution of the movie industry? from silent movies to digital movies.

Just when we wrote about the Film Academy, the local dailies in Cebu reported in their "tsismis sections" about a foreign investor threatening to pull out of Cebu because of corruption. Little did many people realize that those nasty rumors were about the Film Academy? We learned that being a pioneer industry in this field of foreign investment, Michael Gleissner, owner of the Film Academy, wanted to secure a special economic zone status from the government, which, if he gets it, would be a huge financial advantage. Unfortunately, a corrupt government official would only agree to what he wants if he gives millions of pesos in bribes.

Of course, we?re not mentioning here the name of this public official, but you can bet that you can easily get his name in any of the coffeehouses in Metro Cebu because lots of people are talking about this. Because he does not want to be a party to any corruption (he should be given a medal by the government), Mr. Gleissner has threatened to pull out of Mactan. If and when he shuts down operations, it would surely be one of the most embarrassing incidents that ever happened to foreign investments in Cebu and the country.

I gathered that Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña is trying to appease the sore Mr. Gleissner and offered him the use of the South Reclamation Project (SRP) where he would personally see to it that the Film Academy would be given that special economic zone status. Let me tell you that I hate to report stories like this coming from Cebu, but that is the reality today in Mactan and many investors are sick and tired of the corruption happening there. Alas, we seem to be so powerless in stopping corrupt officials from making illicit money? we can only hope that someday, "karma" would strike them.

Talking about doing movies in the digital format, I heard that our good friend, Vic del Rosario, presidential adviser on entertainment and the big boss of Viva Films, has made a suggestion for the government to give a five-year tax holiday for digital films? meaning, they would be exempted from taxes like amusement taxes for five years. I should be elated with this proposal, but if you ask me, they should first ask why are the Americans so successful in the movie industry.

The answer is simple? the people in the US movie industry are only made to pay income taxes and that?s it! The US government does not saddle this industry with heavy taxes, unlike what our politicians do. Hence, for me, five years are too short! Let the industry pay taxes on income and you can see the movie industry boom once again? that?s if we can finally clamp down on pirated movies in CD or DVD format.

Lastly, let me share a story that happened to me in the early 70s. By accident, I met film director Francis Ford Coppola at the Moonwalk Burger on Mango Avenue when he took a breather from his filming of the famous movie Apocalypse Now. When I told him that we had theaters and that we showed American films, he told me: "This movie I?m making should have been done by a Filipino? after all, we are filming this movie here and everything we use is Filipino and they?re great to work with!"

Alas, our movie producers insist on using Tagalog as the medium for our movies, thus we put limitations on where we can market our movies throughout the entire global market. If only we shoot movies in English, Filipino-made films would have become hits years ago.

maypa ikatawa nalang nato na, kaysa magsige ug sakit atong dughan. Well, on to other things, has anyone heard about the rumor i think way back in the late 90s, that the government is planning to transfer Central Command out of their base in Lahug. Just think how much that piece of land is worth, prime location.

i thought Cebu is outside the typhoon belt.. (unlike Manila, Bicol, Northern Luzon)

those places that are outside the typhoon belt areas are from 0 degrees to 10 degrees north. Cebu City's coordinate is above 10 or 10.2 deg north.

Extreme Wind Hazard Mapping in the Philippines

Results of the analysis of observed extreme wind speeds in stations throughout the country are illustrated and dicussed. For clarity of the discussion extreme wind was categorized, depending on the increasing magnitude of the wind speed, into moderately extreme (60 to 100 kph), extreme (101 to 184 kph) and severely extreme (185 or more).

The study shows that severely extreme wind speeds of 185 kph and above are experienced in several areas of the country during various months of the year. In the region of Luzon, the areas are namely, Itbayat, Basco, Vigan, Aparri, Tuguegarao, Dagupan, Munoz, Casiguran, Port Area, Tayabas, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Ambulong, Infanta, Alabat, Daet and Legaspi. The affected areas in the Visayas and Bicol regions are Virac, Romblon and Masbate, Catarman, Tacloban, Guiuan and Mactan Cebu; while in the Mindanao region, extreme wind speeds are observed in the northernmost portion, i.e. in Surigao del Norte.

Being an archipelagic country with 7,100 islands located at the so called "typhoon alley of the world", the Philippines is exposed to very strong winds especially during the passage of tropical cyclones. hence, it is deemed necessary for the government to undertake measures as that would help its seventy five million Pilipinos to undertake preparedness measures as well as structural and non-structural mitigation strategies to minimized the effects of extreme wind hazards.

infact the worst and costliest Philippine typhoon ever is STyphoon Ruping last 1990 that crossed Cebu.

But for me, typhoons are better that earthquakes and tsunamis. Cebu is not an earthquake and tsunami prone area.

Cebu also needs those annual typhoons for its watersheds.

So it's final that they will pull out of CEBU? and probably transfer to other country? not in SRP? Whatta sus.... SAYANG baya!!!!!

I already forwarded this sad news to ABS CBN, susihon na daw ni nila... They also blamed Mayor Radaza for asking so many conditions on its investors... They also said that Mayor Osmeña of Cebu City is giving its full support to Bogfoot. Then they said that why did they invest in Mactan over Cebu City coz Cebu City is giving their full support to them and also BIGFOOT have already given jobs to hundreds of Cebuanos.
