^^maybe because they're still feeding off on that shameful filipino mentality that goes: "expensive international brand is better"

it would be better for Cebu, IMO, if we concentrate our efforts into the production and marketing of high-quality local products/brands that could give international brands a run for their money

i had a chat with a korean lady (a student of mine) who was lamenting the fact that it was difficult to find Gucci or Burberry bags here in Cebu that she could buy as presents, the next day, i showed her a 'native' hand-bag bought for a very cheap price at a local bazaar...she said, "wow, this one looks better"

inamaw mn nang North Face!!! pwerteng mahala sa mga items ana nila! bisan gani diri sa glorietta gilangaw ang ilang botique! kay walay tao! mga ordinary looking shirts kay libo kapin na! wala pa jud sale! HILAS! i checked a jacket with hood. the guy told me the price was "P590". kaingon ko! wow kabarato! but then i clarifed to him and it was P5900!!! SHIT!!!

In the law of supply and demand, it said that if the supply is low and the demand is high, the price will go down.

Why for some branded items, even if the supply is high and the demand is low, the price is still high.

HABAGAT for me, is good...quality wise and cost wise.

^^ Name brand manna North Face. Ari nalang ko sa LL Beans brand sport wear, midyo barato nga name brand and they will guarantee there products. Example a knap sock bag was used for over six months and the zipper broke, called customer service, sent back the bag with the original reciept, they sent a brand new bag with a compatible size and price with no string attached or further question.

Maayo raman pud nang manulod nang mga International Brands diri sa Cebu at least nidagan siya parallel sa pagsige'g sulod sa mga tourista diri. Maayo man sad nang naa sila'y makita nga brands familiar para nila. Although mas maayo jud kung atong producto ilang paliton however, the presence of these brands can give them several choices. Frustrating man sad gud na sa part sa usa ka serious buyer kung gamay ra sad kaayo'g choices for any given merchandize.

Arroyo in Cebu for new campus’ blessing (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/08/24/news/arroyo.in.cebu.for.new.campus.blessing.html)

PRESIDENT Arroyo will grace the blessing and inauguration of the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit’s (SHS-J) new campus in Canduman, Mandaue City today.

She is expected to stay in the campus for at least three hours, which will be the longest time she would have spent in a single event in Cebu.

Upon the invitation of Fr. Ernesto Javier, SHS-J director, the President will hear mass celebrated by Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

A Jesuit school graduate herself, having attended Georgetown University in Washington D.C., USA, Arroyo once taught economics at the Ateneo de Manila University, another Jesuit-run institution.

Along with SHS-J alumni and benefactors, the President will be joined by Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz (Cebu Province, sixth district), and
Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes.

Though the 8.5-hectare campus is not yet completed, plans are already underway for an Olympic-size swimming pool, a track oval and a soccer field, among others.

In the afternoon, President Arroyo will proceed to the Malacañang sa Sugbu to confer the Order of Sikatuna with the rank of Grand Cross (Datu) to Brunei’s deputy minister of defense.

Arroyo is set to leave Cebu City tomorrow morning. (KAB)

It would be nice to see more high rise building around CBD and Ayala Center to have that complete urban feel to it within the city then, when you drive down mactan area, you would have this exotic paradise feel on that side with all these new resorts already in place. I love having the blend of sophistication and modernity within the city while outside is more of a paradise than anything else...

Vega helps Cebu gets going in Dumaguete (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080823202&type=2)

Sunday, August 24, 2008
Paula Abigail Vega of the University of Cebu won four golds and silver to help the Cebu Blue Marlin Swim Club splash to a hot start in the 107th Siliman Founder’s Day Age-Group Swimfest in Dumaguete City.

Cebu, so far, has won 10 golds, 15 silvers and 19 bronzes in the first one and half day of action.

Vega, entered in the girls’ 15-17 bracket, swam uncontested in the 100m, 200m and 400m individual medley and 200m butterfly while finishing second in the 100m freestyle.

Two other Cebu swimmers who competed with Vega in the same category, Arlette Baller and Aimee Sanchez combined for six medals - three silvers and three bronzes.

The other UC swimmers led by Noel Cañeda came up with golds as well. Cañedo snatched gold in the 100m backstroke and two silvers in the 400m IM and 200IM in the boys’ 15-17 division.

Joyce Huguete grabbed gold in the 100m breastroke. Trina, younger sister of Noel, contributed two silvers and two bronzes in the girls’ 11-12 class while Romylyn Ignacio won the bronze.

Aside from UC, swimmers from the Cebu Eastern College (CEC), Labangon Elementary School, Don Bosco College and the Asian Learning Center (ALC) also made some valuable contribution to the Blue Marlin Swim Club’s dominant showing.

ALC swimmers, siblings Rian Raphael Tapang, Rhys Michael Tapang, and Renan Gabriel Tapang, finished with gold, two silvers and three bronzes while competing in the boys’ U6 and 7-8 divisions.

CEC’s Anthony Linn Navarro won two gold medals in the boys’ 9-10 division after ruling the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle. His sister Lyh Ann topped the 100m backstroke and took silver in the 100m freestyle while Anthony Navarro II was good for silver and two bronzes in the 7-8 division.

Labangon’s Karen Mae Indaya swam for two silvers and a bronze in the girls’ 6 under division while Kristina Angelika Torres also of CEC won two bronzes in the same category.

DBC’s Robin Jakobsen won three bronzes and Michael Ichiro Kong finished with a bronze in the boys’9-10 class.

Coach Rolando Alvarez said he’s confident that the team will land among the top three in the overall standings. There are nine teams in the event including a guest team from Germany. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol

Arroyo directs DPWH to start P48M Mandaue bridge project (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080824199&type=2)

Monday, August 25, 2008

President Gloria Arroyo yesterday directed Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane to start the project for the construction of a 40-meter bridge connecting barangays Canduman and Cabancalan in Mandaue City.

The president, who visited the site, told Ebdane to publish the call for public bidding so that the process for selecting a contractor can start soon. She noted that the bridge will address the problem of traffic congestion in this part of the city, especially after the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit moved its school here and started classes last June.

Arroyo, an alumna of a Jesuit School, Georgetown University in Washington, graced the inauguration of the new SHS-J campus, and was informed of the traffic bottleneck in H. Abellana St. in barangay Canduman, which also connects Cebu City to northern towns via Mandaue City.

Last year officials of Mandaue and Cebu cities expressed apprehension over the possible traffic congestion in the area when SHS-J relocated. Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes himself showed to the president the traffic problem in the area.

Secretary Ebdane in turn promised that the publications of the bidding will start on Tuesday and in two more consecutive Tuesdays before the bidding process of the project takes place.

Ebdane however warned that the original cost of P48 million may not be the same now considering the increasing costs of construction materials. He said he will let the Department of Budget and Management determine the reasonable increase.

The construction of the bridge, besides easing the traffic congestion in the area, is part of the P100 million-worth of projects of the national government for Mandaue City, said Ebdane.

He said the other projects are the P20-million rehabilitation and repair of drainage facilities at Kalderohan-Tabok-Tingub-Pagsabungan-Canduman road, and the P32-million rehabilitation and improvement of Casili-Tawason to Canduman road, road widening and asphalting of barangay Canduman.

Meanwhile, later yesterday, Arroyo visited the manufacturing plant of Profoods International Corp. in Maguikay, Mandaue City, to see for herself the situation of the company, which is the largest Philippine-based dried mango producer and exporter of world-class processed fruit products.

Profoods has been contributing a lot to the country’s economy by serving local and international clients, Arroyo said while going around the plant to see for herself the different production processes, from salting to peeling to packing of dried mangoes.

In her message, Arroyo congratulated the employees and officials of the company for a job well done, adding that there is now a company abroad who wants to buy a large volume of Profoods products. Initial talks on the matter have already been held, she said.

Profoods is a producer of various dried fruits, fruit preserves, purees, concentrates and juices. Its products are sold nationwide, and exported to many countries in Asia, Europe, Canada and the United States.

Profoods provides jobs to 600 Cebuanos in normal seasons, but employs 6,000 workers during harvest season to meet the company’s production demands.

Profoods production manager Justin Uy said he mentioned to Arroyo the company’s problem on shortage of mango supply, amid rising demands of mango-based products from the company.

Uy said the president promised to help Profoods through government programs, such as for boosting the production of mango and other fruits in the country. This would mean providing assistance to farmers through pesticide and fertilizers assistance programs of the Department of Agriculture, he said. — Mitchelle L. Developer eyes supermarket in Lapu project

PROPERTY developer AboitizLand Inc. will expand its commercial property development project in Lapu-Lapu City to provide lifestyle services to locators at the Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ) 2, tourists and nearby residents.

The expansion of Pueblo Verde will result in the development of nearly 19,000 square meters of total leasable lot area, where a supermarket will soon rise, in addition to the five-storey iMEZ that broke ground last Aug. 8, 2008.

AboitizLand is in talks with a national supermarket chain over the Pueblo Verde retail facility.

The expansion project will also result in the enhancement of existing facilities at Pueblo Verde. These improvements, according to Floramie Vega, commercial leasing Manager of AboitizLand Inc., will make the property more prominent and increase its relevance to the market that it serves.

Vega said the expansion will include a bigger terminal for public utility vehicles.

The retail and service outlets within Pueblo Verde will also provide the ideal lifestyle support for BPO office personnel who will occupy iMEZ, the employees of MEZ 2 companies and other patrons.

Pueblo Verde covers a total of 2.1 hectares (more than 20,000 square meters). Approximately 7,300 square meters of the area has been developed and around 2,000 square meters is being earmarked for common areas. Several retail, dining, financial and service establishments have opened within the Pueblo Verde development.

Conveniently located at the entrance of MEZ 2 along Maximo Patalinghug Highway, Pueblo Verde is a master planned commercial hub with a distinctly modern architecture that displays charming Filipino-Spanish design influences.

“The complex will have the look of a town center, not like a traditional mall,” said Vega.

The iMEZ itself will have retail outlets on the ground floor for added convenience to BPO companies that will occupy the upper floors of the building.

BPO companies will find iMEZ an ideal location because of a 200-percent power back-up infrastructure that is guaranteed to keep all vital systems running at all times. Power rates within Pueblo Verde are also competitive so locators do not have to worry too much about high electricity consumption costs.

Since iMEZ is located within an economic zone, BPO companies will enjoy the same tax holidays that are granted to occupants of Philippine Economic Zone Authority-registered establishments.

“Of course, another advantage is that this property is being developed by AboitizLand, which has an established track record of designing and developing distinct communities for industrial, commercial and residential use,” Vega said.

Electrical problem disrupts portion of Ayala
Cebu Daily News
First Posted 11:19:00 08/24/2008

AN electrical problem in Ayala Center Cebu yesterday sent fire trucks rushing to the mall.

Nobody was injured in the incident which occurred past 10 a.m., disrupting power supply in three floors of a portion of the mall.

Clavel Tongco, head of Ayala Center Cebu, said the expansion building “experienced an electrical problem” and that store operations there would be “temporarily suspended for the convenience of the public.”

“Operations will resume once normal power supply is restored,” she said.

The affected areas include one side of Paseo Marina (from Guess to the mall's south entry) as well as the expansion building (Paseo Solana) from the first to third levels.

Some shoppers said they heard an explosion from a room where the power generator was located near the rooftop and saw smoke coming out. Management staff members quickly used fire extinguishers.

Customers resumed normal transactions soon after.

By the time Cebu City fire trucks arrived, there was no need to use hoses. Fire investigator Felix Romero said the case is still under investigation. Correspondent Chito O. Aragon

"Malling" consumes shoppers in the Philippines

By Marnette FederisSat Aug 23, 8:22 PM ET

In the Philippines, "malling" has become a verb, the act of going to a shopping mall and whiling away the hours.

The Southeast Asian country has three of the world's 10 largest shopping centers, two of them in the capital, Manila. Scores of others, ranging from modern glass and steel structures to older, fading buildings, dot cities across the archipelago.

Although over 40 percent of the country's 90 million people live on $2 or less per day, malls here are crowded at all times, and especially packed at weekends.

Around 80 percent of the Philippines' population go to shopping centers and around 36 million people visit shopping plazas once or twice a month, according to Nielsen Media Research.

"People just come to the mall to stay cool, said Chris Balberona, a driver for a bank, who was at Manila's Megamall watching ice-skaters on an artificial rink.

"Life is hard right now so we don't really come here to shop."

The air-conditioned malls are a boon in this steamy tropical nation. But shopping plazas in the Philippines have also become a place to pay bills, meet or watch people, eat or see a film.

Catholic masses are even held in the corridors of some malls. While the faithful sit on plastic chairs, less religious folk continue to browse the rails nearby.

Shopping is only an option at Manila's malls.

A WAY OF LIFE

But with inflation hitting a near 17-year high of 12.2 percent in July as gas and food prices soar, Filipinos are forking out even less these days for non-essentials such as cinema trips and more clothes.

Private consumption is the lifeblood of the Philippine economy and a drop-off in spending is expected to cut economic growth this year to 5.1 percent, according to a Reuters poll last month, from a three decade peak of 7.2 percent in 2007.

Economic growth skidded to a seasonally adjusted 0.8 percent in the first quarter compared to 1.3 percent in the fourth quarter of last year

SM Prime, the largest mall operator in the Philippines, said 2.5 million people still visited its 30 shopping centers across the country.

"There has been no noticeable decrease in this number primarily because the 'malling' lifestyle has become a way of life for the Filipinos," said Cora Guidote, vice president for investor relations at SM Prime.

But with the cost of travel spiking because of high oil prices, some Filipinos say they are cutting back on their mall trips and restricting themselves even more to window shopping.

Cita Foronda, an executive assistant who goes to a mall once a week with her four children, says the visits are now almost entirely to kill time.

"We only shop on a need basis now," Foronda said. "Even with the sales, it's not attractive anymore."

With very few public parks or other public amenities in Manila, and high pollution levels, she says the small play areas for children are a big attraction.

"If you have small kids, of course, you go to the mall," she said. "You want your kids to be happy because you hardly see them during the work week."

Almost all utilities bills can be paid in malls, banks are attached and a fairly inexpensive meal at a fast-food eatery is always an option.

"It's like they give you everything just so you go," Foronda said.

REMITTANCES

Another factor keeping malls popular is the large inflows of remittances sent home by millions of Filipinos who work overseas.

These remittances, estimated to reach a fresh peak of nearly $16 billion this year, support the retail sector even amidst the economic slowdown.

Every few years a new mall emerges in Manila or one of the larger cities, bigger and more extravagant than the last.

One of the newest is the Mall of Asia, the world's third largest shopping centre. It is almost as big as Vatican City.

Two other malls in the Philippines, SM North Edsa and SM Cebu, also made the top 10 list in the study.

But for those hardest hit by the recent economic crisis, the family pastime of 'malling' is becoming increasingly rare.

"Before, it was a regular family day for us to go to the malls, even if we went there to just eat or walk around," said Romeo Castillo, a taxi driver who has two children.

"Now, it's really impossible even for that, it's just out of our budget."

Arroyo: Speed up bridge project (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/net/2008/08/25/arroyo.speed.up.bridge.project.html)

CEBU CITY -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo again prodded the public works department to begin building an approved bridge project in Mandaue City that will connect Canduman and Cabancalan, when she visited its site Sunday.

But with bidding still to be done, Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane said work on the 40-meter bridge is expected to begin in November yet.

Visit the Beijing Olympics 2008 blog

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) still has to reevaluate its initial budget of P48 million, though, to factor in an increase in oil prices. The planned bridge and four related projects are expected to cost at least P100 million, which a technical working team has yet to review.

Apart from infrastructure projects, mangoes and a foreign peace advocate brought President Arroyo to Cebu, where she stayed overnight.

These are aside from the inauguration of the new Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHS-J) campus in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.

After a quick brunch at the SHS-J, she visited the site of a proposed bridge connecting Canduman and Barangay Cabancalan in Mandaue.

“Gawin agad (Do this now),” Ebdane quoted the President as telling him.

Arroyo promised Mandauehanons the bridge in October last year by including it in the 2008 national budget.

In a visit to Cebu last month, she ordered construction to start “immediately.”

But Ebdane told reporters that building the 40-meter bridge will begin in November yet, “if all goes according to plan.”

Bidding soon

In particular, he said, he needs the local government’s help in acquiring the road right-of-way.

Arroyo ordered Ebdane to publish the notice of bidding by Tuesday, saying the DPWH actually has an outstanding notice of cash allocation (NCA).

Ebdane identified November as target date because the DPWH has yet to request the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) for a special allocation release order (Saro).

The Saro is needed before the DBM can issue the NCA and release the funds for the bridge.

Ebdane said a technical working team is also reevaluating the cost, as increasing oil prices have jacked up the prices of construction materials.

The team, he said, is composed of DPWH, DBM and National Economic Development and Authority (Neda) representatives.

Aside from the bridge, Mandaue City also proposed four more major road projects, including the rehabilitation of the barangay road going through Kalderohan, Tabok, Tingub, Pagsa-bungan and Canduman, with work on drainage facilities, worth P20 million.

Exporter

The other road projects, each costing P10 million, are improvements of the Casili-Tawason to Canduman road and the road connecting Riverside and Angelicum Garden of Angels and Canduman.

Road widening and asphalting, still in Canduman, requires P12 million more.

Total cost is P100 million for the five projects, which Ebdane said are all under reevaluation by the technical working team.

After visiting the proposed bridge site, Arroyo then toured the 10-hectare Profoods Inc. manufacturing plant around noon.

She capped the afternoon off by awarding a representative of Brunei for advocating peace in southern Philippines.

Presidential Management Staff Chief Cerge Remonde said Arroyo chose to visit Profoods “to pay tribute to outstanding exporters.”

Profoods is among the country’s biggest exporters of fruit juice and other products derived from mangoes.

Key role

Company production manager James Uy said that President Arroyo promised to help the mango industry through financing and by aiding farmers, particularly by providing soil fertilizers.

In their conversion, he remarked that the demand from other countries cannot be met by Philippine mango growers.

Later in the afternoon, Arroyo conferred the Order of Sikatuna with the Rank of Grand Cross to Brunei deputy minister of defense Pehin Yasmin.

The citation gave credence to Yasmin’s efforts in brokering peace in Mindanao, particularly “for his key role and sustained active involvement in leading the international monitoring team.”

Gokongwei Scholars’ Conversations - CEBU Leg (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080824185&type=2)

Monday, August 25, 2008
Eight of the 34 Gokongwei Scholars reunited in Cebu last August 7 and 8 for the University of San Carlos and Southwestern University leg of their Project Hope Warrior Caravan. During this affair, the group had the privilege of meeting Governor Gwendolyn F. Garcia, Atty. Augusto W. Go and Dr. Edward Gaisano. They were joined by Cebuano National Youth Commissioner Mike Acebedo Lopez who facilitated all three encounters with Cebu’s distinguished leaders. Each interaction served as a continuation of the “Conversations” lecture series that the Scholars began in Beijing, where they invited some of the most successful Filipinos based in China like CNN Beijing Bureau Chief Jaime FlorCruz and Communications Director of the China World Shangri-La Hotel Dianne Fermin-Roeder to share their knowledge and insights with them.

At the Capitol with Governor Gwen Garcia

The Scholars visited Gov. Garcia at the Capitol last August 7. For most of the scholars, it was their first time to meet the governor. After a two-hour interaction with the governor, some of the scholars who were not from Cebu joked about relocating to the province for good because of the projects being implemented by the provincial government.

Atty. Augusto Go and the Go Family Heritage

The scholars also met with Atty. Augusto Go that day. Atty. Go is the 2008 Cebu Business Month Entrepreneur of the Year and is a cousin of John Gokongwei Jr.

He charmed the scholars with his grandfatherly attitude and his stories about Pedro Gotiaoco and the families whose lineage can be traced back to him: the Gokongweis, the Gaisanos, the Gotianuys, the Gotianuns, and, according to popular speculation, the Osmeñas. Throughout the conversation, Atty. Go would pepper his stories with tips on how to be successful in life based on other people’s stories and his own experience. According to Atty. Go, his own formula for success includes frugality, hard work, and a little bit of luck.

Dr. Edward Gaisano and the CCCI

On August 8, the scholars met with Dr. Edward Gaisano, President of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Mrs. Teresa C. Pono, Executive Director of CCCI, for a very stimulating discussion of Cebu and its economy, Filipinos doing business with the rest of the world, the role language has played in the Philippines’ development, and some of the scholars’ more memorable experiences from China. For the Scholars, one of the most important lessons they took learned from the event was on the importance of asking questions and always keeping a macro or holistic perspective in mind when trying to understand any issue, question, point or event.

Mild quake jolts Leyte and parts of Cebu (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/08/26/news/mild.quake.jolts.leyte.and.parts.of.cebu.html)

AN earthquake occurred at 10:43 a.m. yesterday and was felt in Leyte and some parts of Cebu.

In Leyte, a child got bruised after getting thrown against a wall, 10 houses got cracked while a portion of a mountain in Anahawan town slumped as a result of the earthquake.

No casualties, however, were reported.

Rolando Montañez of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) 7 said the earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, had a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.

Its epicenter was 35 kilometers south of Maasin, Southern Leyte.

Montañez, Phivolcs 7 science research specialist, said in radio interviews that the earthquake was also felt in the towns of St. Bernard (intensity 5) and Sogod (intensity 3), and in the cities of Tacloban and Cebu (intensity 2).

Montañez, however, said residents in some parts of Metro Cebu felt the mild tremor, which was enough to cause a slight swinging of objects.

“If naa ka sa taas nga floors, you could feel the shaking. But if you’re near the ground, you could hardly notice it,” Montañez said.

Small aftershocks were later reported in Leyte.

In a radio dyAB report, Mayor Roberto Loquimte of Anahawan town said a portion of the mountain in Barangay Kagingkingan, about three kilometers away from the town proper, slumped to the rice field.

Anahawan is adjacent to St. Bernard.

Loquimte said they were still assessing the extent of the damage caused by the slumping. (RCT)

Cebu resort is a nature-friendly place

By MALOU M. MOZO

CEBU CITY — Although it is already known for being an upscale leisure destination in Cebu, Plantation Bay Resort and Spa is now actively positioning itself as one of the world’s nature-friendly resorts.

Plantation Bay seeks accreditation from the Green Hotels Association, an international group of environmentally friendly establishments whose managers implement programs that save water and energy and reduce solid waste while being cost effective.

"Preserving our country’s ecosystem is one of our primary efforts. We want to make sure that the resort adheres to environment sustainability by which the next generation can still enjoy its surroundings," said Ma. Lourdes Martinez-Onozawa, Plantation Bay’s architect and environmental planner.

Onozawa said Plantation Bay’s advocacy in environmental preservation began even before its inauguration in 1996, when it chose to integrate greening efforts into most aspects of the hotel’s operations.

"All our materials are sourced locally," said Onozawa, adding that this makes Plantation Bay a Filipino resort and spa.

The resort uses indigenous materials like coconut ginit, bamboo, banig (weaved mat), Mactan marble, and other local products.

Onozawa said the resort has refrained from using plastics, which is non-biodegradable and manufactured using fossil fuels.

The resort’s roads and concrete pavements are made of asphalt and gravel to allow water absorption and regenerate the groundwater.

Instead of extracting sand, the resort has used readily available limestone, which is homogeneous with the lime bedrock in the area.

Onozawa said even the plants, trees and shrubs around Plantation Bay are found around Cebu.

Plants and trees like kalachuchi, coconut trees, green lilies, and spider lilies among others, are found all over the resort and were chosen because of its capacity to take in seawater, she said.

Seaweeds — with its ability to hold water and prevent the formation of fungus—is placed on top of plants so they don’t have to be watered as often, Ozonawa also said.

"Wastes are recycled and minimized," she added.

Used tea bags, coffee and dessicated coconut are scattered on the ground to drive away ants and similar pests.

"Malling" consumes shoppers in the Philippines

By Marnette FederisSat Aug 23, 8:22 PM ET

One of the newest is the Mall of Asia, the world's third largest shopping centre. It is almost as big as Vatican City.

Two other malls in the Philippines, SM North Edsa and SM Cebu, also made the top 10 list in the study.
Where's Megamall? It's supposed to be bigger than SM North Edsa.

SM North EDSA is bigger than Megamall now. So, SM Megamall is now the 3rd largest after SM Mall of Asia, and SM North EDSA.

So yeah, I'm also wondering why it's missing in the list when it is still larger than SM Cebu. :)

Aussie firm to start oil prospecting in Cebu (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/08262008/companies03.html)

By Willy Rodolfo III
Reporter

AUSTRALIAN-controlled Nor-Asian Energy Limited is set to start site survey efforts early next year as it searches for oil in the seas off Argao town in southeastern Cebu island.

Department of Energy-Visayas field chief Antonio Labios told the BusinessMirror that NorAsian is currently doing the round of public consultations among affected localities and fisherfolks.

“This is part of the process they have to go through before they could start exploratory drillings,” Labios told the BusinessMirror.

He said the consultations aim to assure the fishing community that the planned site survey will not affect their livelihood.

NorAsian is a company jointly owned by Australia’s Ottoman Energy Ltd. and AustralAsian Energy Ltd.

The company has completed its seismic survey in Bohol Sea, between Cebu and Bohol islands, and will conduct a more thorough examination to determine potential pockets that could contain commercial quantities of oil.

“They will look for oil pocket formations in the sea bottom and for shallow gas because this will effect their drilling later on,” Labios said.

The site survey will also determine the exact spot where the company will conduct exploratory drilling to determine the quality and quantity of oil in the area.

NorAsian is the second company to push its oil search in the seas around Cebu.

A local company of Japan Petroleum Exploration recently withdrew its efforts in western Cebu off Pinamungajan town after exploration drills indicated that oil in the area is not of commercial quantity.

NorAsian is searching for oil in four locations in the Philippines—off the seas of Calauit Island, Bohol Strait and off Cabilao Island also in Bohol and Marantao in Palawan.

The prospect in Argao has an estimated recoverable reserve of up to 270 million barrels of oil, while the one in Cabilao is estimated to contain as much as 145 million barrels.

HK firm to invest $7.2 M on oil search (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=2008082513&type=2)

Tuesday, August 26, 2008
Hong Kong-based Polyard Petroleum International Co. Ltd. (PPICL) has bagged a new petroleum exploration service contract (SC) under the Philippine Energy Contracting Round (PECR) of the Department of Energy (DOE).

The DOE will award SC 70 to PPICL this week.

Aside from PPICL, the DOE will also award three coal exploration contracts to other exploration firms.

PPICL, which is involved in both upstream and downstream petroleum and natural gas activities, is expected to pour in about $7.2 million for the expected seven-year exploration period.

This adds to a total $464.05 million in projected exploration investment since 2004 from 33 active service contracts.

SC 70 is located in the Central Luzon Basin Block or Area 2. PPICL plans to conduct a seismic survey over the block in order to identify potential sites for drilling at least two wells.

The Philippine government has been encouraging the private sector to participate in its energy independence program that aims to reduce dependence on imported fuels.

Through intensive petroleum exploration, the DOE hopes to find additional reserves to meet domestic demand.

“With the recent awarding of these service contracts and the signing of this contract with PPICL, the DOE expects to fulfill its mission and vision to ensure sustainable, stable, secure, sufficient, accessible and reasonably-priced energy,” Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes said.

The DOE will also award coal service contracts in Bayawan, Negros Oriental and Calatrava, Negros Oriental to Guidance Management Corp. (GMC).

GMC was also recently awarded a geothermal service contract for the Amacan geothermal prospect in Compostela Valley. GMC is likewise a corporate partner of Aragorn Power Energy Corp. in Kalinga.

IL Rey’c Coal Mining and Exploration Corp. (IRCMEC) will also be awarded more than two coal blocks in Danao City, Cebu.

IRCMEC has been a long time traditional coal player in the exploration and development of coal deposit in northern Cebu coal field through a previous coal operating contract with the DOE.

The DOE will also sign the conversion from exploration to development/production stage of coal operating contract (COC) 132 in Balamban-Naga, Cebu. — Donnabelle L. Gatdula

Moalboal told to refund cash bonuses (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080825171&type=2)

Tuesday, August 26, 2008
The Commission on Audit told Moalboal town officials and employees not only to refund the extra cash gift and benefits extended to them but also to refund the collective negotiation agreement bonus.

The COA, in its audit report on Moalboal’s operations in 2007, said the town gave extra cash gifts amounting to P1.248 million, way beyond what the town can afford.

Based on the computation, the agency had already exceeded the personal services limitation required for a fourth-class municipality, so it exceeded the 55 percent limitation for personal services, thus giving extra cash gifts was a violation of the Local Budget Memorandum No.54.

“All officials and employees concerned who received such benefit at P20,000 each should refund the amount immediately,” COA said, adding that approving officials should also explain why benefits were granted despite the fact that it had already exceeded its personal services limitations for the calendar year 2007.

The Moalboal municipal government also released collective negotiation agreement bonuses worth P900,000.

Under Budget Circular 2006-1 dated February 1, 2006, the CNA shall not be given upon signing and ratification of the CNA’s or supplements as this gives the CNA incentive the character of a CNA bonus.

A copy of the Certificate of Registration-CNA was signed by the town and the Association of Moalboal Municipal Employees effective January 2, 2007 to January 2, 2010.

Based on the certification, the start of effectivity was January 2, 2007, which the commission said that only savings generated after January 2, 2007 ascertained at the end of the year shall be source of the CNA incentive, which shall be paid at the following year, calendar year 2008.

The state auditors also revealed that no supporting documents were attached to the claims on the sources of funds from cost-cutting measures. — Garry B. Lao/BRP

New hotel to open
August 26, 2008
By Debra M. Estero
Sun.Star Correspondent

AN INTERNATIONAL hotel chain will open its 10th branch in the country, in Lapu-Lapu City, next week.

Microtel Inn and Suites Mactan is the biggest Microtel branch in the Philippines.

With an area covering almost one hectare and a 5,000-square meter beach, Microtel Inn and Suites Mactan is the biggest Microtel branch in the Philippines, said general manager Rene Jorolan.

Jorolan said the six-story Microtel Mactan features a modern retro theme from the lobby to the guest rooms.

It will have the same service offered by all Microtel hotels worldwide.

“We are a limited-service hotel with international standards,” Jorolan told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview last week.

He said the hotel targets a mixed market and can accommodate short- and long-staying guests.

Therapeutic

Microtel Mactan has a total of 161 rooms, all furnished with chiropractor-approved mattresses imported from Georgia in the United States.

“No franchise can open a Microtel without these mattresses, which are therapeutic and can give utmost comfort to our guests,” Jorolan said. Each room is also equipped with a safety deposit box.

Cebu-based Enderson Land Inc. owns the Microtel Mactan property but the hotel is managed by Microtel Development Corp. Microtel Mactan has 18 suite rooms, each with a floor area of 30 square meters, 55 double room premium and 88 double room standard—both types having a floor area of 25 square meters. Premium rooms provide guests a view of the open sea.

Since the hotel operates according to international standards, there are also six rooms that Jorolan described as “physically handicapped-friendly” rooms.

Differently abled

This room type is designed for persons with disabilities as it features a door hole that can be used by guests who move around on a wheelchair. Room numbers are also written in Braille.

Access ramps for wheelchairs can also be found all over the hotel.

Although the soft opening on Monday will allow the management to evaluate its readiness to accept guests, Jorolan said it will also allow them to “feel the pulse of the community.”

The grand opening is set for the last week of September.

Jorolan also confirmed that the hotel have already started accepting bookings and he is confident Microtel Mactan would be able to earn a “respectable” figure by the end of the year.

Microtel Mactan, located in Punta Engaño, also features a lobby coffeeshop, adult and kiddie pools, wireless Internet access, beach bar pool, an adventure room and function rooms.

Paletada is a stucco of special mixture (perhaps following the same old recipe used during the period when this church was built). It's not plain cement.

The restorers actually did the right thing. The stones are not supposed to be exposed just to make it look old because doing so would expose them (the stones) to the elements and damage them. Applying this special layer of stucco is a practice I think even during the Spanish times. Hehehe.

I forgot about the mixture but I read somewhere that one of the components are crushed lime and sand.

SM North EDSA is bigger than Megamall now. So, SM Megamall is now the 3rd largest after SM Mall of Asia, and SM North EDSA.

So yeah, I'm also wondering why it's missing in the list when it is still larger than SM Cebu. :)

Even with the addition of The Northwing?

AFP - Wednesday, August 27
MANILA (AFP) - - AIDS-related infections are rising rapidly in the Philippines although the ratio of those afflicted out of the total population remains low, Health Secretary Francisco Duque said Tuesday.

An average of 29 cases a month of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) have been reported in 2007 and 2008, compared with 20 cases a month in previous years, he told a news conference.etc....

How many of these 29 cases a month reported from Cebu?
We do not want what is in Brazil and South Africa, is growing in CEBU !!!
We do not need money and profits from sex tourists trade. Courtesy workers and tourists' visa with HEALTH issues should be banned from working and tourist sent home. Workers have the duty to keep the job security, to his/her family and to us healthy people to stop/report co-workers from doing any fluid contacts.
Liniency and taking it for granted, will be a death sentence to all of us.
There is NO CURE FOR AIDS. The HIV medicines extends the infected person lifespan. The worst part are: - Medicines hides outward physical symptoms. - we respect people's right daring not to ask them about HIV. Some infected ones want to get even and spread it more.
The greatest Love of the HIV and AID infected is not to spread it.

Bastille Day which commemorates the infamous storming of the famous Parisian prison that served as a stamp of the absolute and arbitrary power of Louis XVI Regime has been celebrated in the French history as the ultimate symbol of its nationhood.

In observance of its 219th national holiday, the amiable entrepreneur Michel Lhuillier who traces his roots to France and his wife, fashion icon and tireless philanthropist Amparito, together with Louis Thevinin, director of Les Amis de la France, a French cultural institute in Cebu hosted a well-attended, sit-down dinner at the Pino restaurant.

Joel del Prado, managing director of the restaurant, put together a well-conceptualized menu. For starters, guests sampled salmon with cream cheese, parma ham, salami trumpet with stuffed olives and more cheeses such as chevre, brie de meaux, and roquefort. Seafood on ice had trayfulls of lobsters, prawns and oysters complemented with cocktail sauce, shallot vinegar and avocado fan.

Roasted French rack of lamb and roasted prime rib eye took centerstage at the carving stations with a variety of sauces from peppercorn to mushroom, mint jelly and capered lemon butter sauce. Other stations had beans with garlic, seared vegetables in red wine and baked potatoes.

Entertainers Rhea Mae Judilla and Rhina Rose Echevarri serenaded guests with their interpretations of classic French love songs.

Guests of honor, the very well-liked French Ambassador to the Philippines, Gerard Chesnel and his Indonesian wife Ning flew in from Manila for the affair. Their daughter Kirana, presently studying in Paris, was present as well.

Long time resident of Cebu the erstwhile French Honorary Consul Richard Fourteau was on hand to bid farewell to the French community as he leaves for a new post. To wish him Godspeed were Cebu Provincial Governor Gwen Garcia, Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama, Cebu City First Lady Margot Osmeña, fellow members of the Cebu-based diplomatic corps Honorary Consul of Spain Jaime Picornell and Honorary Consul of the United Kingdom Moya Jackson.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement by Ambassador Chesnel of Michel Lhuillier as the new Honorary Consul of France — a well deserved honor mainly due to the latter’s all out support to the various Filipino French projects, the latest being the founding of Les Amis de la France, of which he is president.

It was truly an evening of celebration and the French citizens who proclaimed once again liberte, egalite, fraternite.

CNG investments in RP seen to reach $100 M (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080827177&type=2)

By Donnabelle L. Gatdula
Thursday, August 28, 2008

Over $100 million worth of new investments are expected to be poured into the country’s compressed natural gas (CNG) industry, a top executive from a global energy company said.

During the CNG-NGV (Natural Gas Vehicle) Philippines Forum 2008 attended by leading international CNG players, potential investors from the United States, Canada, Korea, China, India, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia have signified interest in the development of CNG particularly in the transport sector, said Lev Zaidenberg, chief executive of US firm Energtek Inc.

The companies that attended the forum include Energtek Inc.; IMV Industries Ltd.; Shanghai Diesel Engine Co. Ltd.; OMB Saleri S.P.A.; Oasis Engineering; Asia Pacific Natural Gas Vehicles Association; Beijing Landi Renzo Autogas Systems Co. Ltd.,Youngdo Ind. Co. Ltd., PTT PLC; Petronas;PT Citra Nusantara Gemilang; CNG Services International Inc. and Smart Energy.

Zaidenberg told reporters at the forum that he sees investments for the conversion program of tricycles to CNG-run vehicles and the setting up of licensed garage CNG filling stations alone could reach over $100 million.

Energtek was able to convert the first batch of tricycles to run on CNG in July 2008 in Isabela, using natural gas sourced from the San Antonio field of the PNOC-Exploration Corp.

The company, he said, is now looking at the possibility of bringing in CNG Lite system, a technology that Energtek uses, to Cebu.

CNG Lite is a complete energy supply solution for small vehicles powered by the so-called adsorbed natural gas technology, which enables hi-tech and cost-effective storage of natural gas by maximizing the quantities of gas stored in a tank.

CNG greatly reduces the infrastructure, fueling, and energy costs of supply solutions to consumers where no pipeline or refueling infrastructure is present.

Zaidenberg said they are still in preliminary talks with Cebu local government officials for the project.

According to Zaidenberg, they would also be able to bring in their technology to Metro Manila and other provinces if they could get firm commitment on where to source their natural gas requirement.

He said they are still in the initial stages of discussions with the Malampaya consortium for the possible supply of gas to support Energtek’s expansion program.

He said Energtek is also negotiating with two microfinance banks to provide financing to tricycle drivers who will opt to avail of their technology.

The conversion, he said, would amount to $500 per kit. “This is the reason why we are arranging microfinancing for those who would want to convert their vehicles into CNG-run,” he said.

He said they would also be studying the feasibility of offering the same technology to marine transportation.

BOI grants tax incentives to 2 housing projs (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080827172&type=2)
By Ma. Elisa P. Osorio
Thursday, August 28, 2008

The Board of Investments (BOI) has given tax breaks to two mass housing projects in Cebu and Naga.

The incentives were given to Pueblo de Oro Development Corp. and Firm Builders Realty Development  Corp. The two projects have a combined worth of over P300 million.

Pueblo de Oro, a 100-percent Filipino owned firm, is investing P287.3 million in a low cost mass housing project in Barangay Kalawisan Lapu-Lapu City Cebu.

The project, named La Aldea del Rio, will cover over four hectares of land wherein 500 housing units will be constructed.

The individual units will be 40 to 65 square meters. Each unit will have two bedrooms, one toilet and bath, living room, dining area, kitchen, laundry area and a front lawn.

The BOI said the project is consistent with the government’s 2008 Investments Priorities Plan (IPP).

The government favors mass housing project in response to the growing need for more affordable housing. Mass housing is a priority social program of the current administration.

Construction has started this month and it has generated 215 new jobs.

Meanwhile, Firm Builders Realty has invested P42.3 million for the construction of 354 mass housing units in Naga City.

The firm has already started its construction and has hired 88 employees.

Firm Builders is a new developer which was given non pioneer status by the BOI.

Carmen Copper inks deal with Swiss firm (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=2008082623&type=2)

Wednesday, August 27, 2008
Carmen Copper Corp., a subsidiary of Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp., has signed an off-take agreement with MRI Trading AG of Switzerland.

Under the contract, Carmen Copper will sell to MRI the first 60,000 dry metric tons of copper concentrate produced from Carmen’s Toledo, Cebu copper mine.

The first delivery has been set for June 2009.

MRI also agreed to provide a hedge on copper prices for the first 30,000 tons of concentrate that will be delivered to its warehouse at the Sangi Port in Toledo City, Cebu.

Atlas and Carmen Copper obtained just this month a mineral production sharing agreement (MPSA) with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

This will pave the way for the start of operation this month of the $95-million Carmen Copper project in Toledo, Cebu.

Atlas projects a revenue of at least P500 million from its existing nickel mining operations this year.

For next year Atlas is optimistic that this year its revenue will increase to between P2 billion and P3 billion once its Carmen Copper mine starts operation.

The Toledo mine has estimated copper ore reserves of 870,000 metric tons.

MRI Trading, according to its website, is a private company engaged in international physical commodities trading and investments. It sources and markets a diverse range of non-ferrous raw materials to various industrial consumers in the world. — Marianne Go

US firm to invest in gas conversion technology for RP tricycles (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=2008082615&type=2)

Wednesday, August 27, 2008
US-based Energtek Inc. plans to invest in the business of converting tricycles into natural gas-run vehicles for the Philippine transport sector.

Energtek chief operating officer Lev Zaidenberg said they are looking at converting half a million tricycle units in the country into gas-powered models within the next three to four years.

A number of tricycles have already been converted by Energtek, with most of these two-stroke and four-stroke three-wheelers now running optimally and efficiently on natural gas.

Zaidenberg is one of the speakers at the Compressed Natural Gas ‑ Natural Gas Vehicle (CNG-NGV) Philippines Forum to be held today (Aug. 27). Energtek is an official sponsor of the forum which aims to push natural gas vehicle solutions throughout the metropolis by 2010.

Zaidenberg said they would be highlighting in the event some samples of the first converted vehicles of the company’s commercial NGV project during the forum. These vehicles were converted using Energtek’s proprietary natural gas conversion and supply system for small vehicles, introduced during the conference as CNG Lite.

“The effects of the emissions reductions will be immediately felt throughout the Philippines . In addition to the environmental benefit, drivers of tricycles will save hundreds of dollars each year on fuel costs using CNG Lite,” Zaidenberg said.

“We are proud to deliver this technology to the Philippines, and look forward to fulfilling the government’s request to convert at least half a million of the country’s three million tricycles over the next three to four years.”

According to the company official, they are expected to convert an additional 10 vehicles during the month of September, and complete 3,000 tricycle conversions in the provinces in 2009. Similarly, Energtek aims to launch additional conversion projects over the next several months in the provinces of Cebu and Batangas.

The CNG Lite complete energy supply solution for small vehicles is powered by adsorbed natural gas technology, which enables hi-tech and cost-effective storage of natural gas by maximizing the quantities of gas stored in a tank.

The vehicles have been operating since July on natural gas extracted from the San Antonio stranded gas well. Environmental analysis of the vehicle sample reveals that carbon monoxide (CO) emissions from the tricycles are virtually eliminated following conversion.

Energtek’s CNG Lite™ conversion of gasoline-powered two-stoke tricycles reduces levels of CO from four percent to 0.6 percent, a reduction of 85 percent. Conversion of gasoline powered four-stroke tricycles reduced levels of carbon monoxide emissions from 2.5 percent to a virtually non-existent 0.05 percent, a reduction of 98 percent. — Donnabelle Gatdula

Budget carrier expands service with more flights from Cebu hub (http://sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/08/29/bus/budget.carrier.expands.service.with.more.flights.from.cebu.hub.html)
Sun-Star Online
Friday, August 29, 2008

WHILE other airline companies cut routes as a strategic response to rising fuel prices, Cebu Pacific (CEB) decided to do the opposite by expanding its Cebu operations hub with two new aircraft and three new domestic services.

In a press conference yesterday at the Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino Mactan, president and chief executive officer Lance Gokongwei announced that CEB will take delivery of two high-standard regional turboprop aircraft, ATR 3 and ATR 4, in October and November, respectively.

The aircraft will be based in Cebu and will strengthen the CEB hub at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, which presently has four Airbus A320s.

The two new “environment-friendly and fuel-efficient” planes involved a combined investment of $40 million.

“These will also strengthen Cebu’s already leading presence in the domestic and international front, improve frequencies and schedules, and optimize Cebu’s central location in the country,” Gokongwei said.

In setting up the Cebu hub, he said CEB considered the “vibrancy” of the market, the strategic location of the province being in the center of the country, and the availability of skilled people who can carry out the airline’s services.

Gokongwei disclosed that CEB earlier ordered 10 ATRs, which are manufactured in France. The first two arrived in the first quarter this year and are now based in CEB’s Manila hub.

The budget airline expects delivery of six more planes in the coming months. Its fleet is expected to have 25 planes by the end of this year and grow to 31 aircraft next year.

With the new aircraft, CEB will service three new routes: Cebu-Dipolog, Cebu-Ozamiz, and Cebu-Surigao.

The three-times a week Cebu-Dipolog route will start on Oct. 3 with an all-in seat sale of P688 or 57 percent less than CEB’s competitors, said Gokongwei.

The Cebu-Ozamiz route, also three times a week, will start on Nov. 10 while the four-times a week Cebu-Surigao route will start Nov. 13. Both will have an all-in seat sale of P688.

This is, Gokongwei said, a way to encourage people to fly.

With more flights out of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, he said the airline will be able to further support Cebu as a tourism and economic gateway in the country and provide better product for business travelers who frequently fly, sometimes twice a day.

However, due to “general difficulties” faced by the airline industry—mainly as a result of rising fuel prices—that pushed about 20 airlines in other countries to declare bankruptcy in the past six months, CEB has no plans of adding international routes between now and December.

Gokongwei said that while CEB is affected by the same difficulties faced by the airline industry, it will continue to look for cost-efficient measures to be able to serve its customers.

the top three existing highrises in cebu city are the Crown Regency Hotel (40), Winland Towers (25), and Club Ultima (24), respectively.

If we are going to include those that are u/c, then the top 1 will still be Crown Regency Hotel, Ultima Residences Fuente Tower 3 (27, but height almost equivalent to Crown Regency), and Ultima Residences Ramos Tower (31) > all of which are under one developer. :D

Lacion steps up construction of commercial facility project (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=20080829175)
By Ehda M. Dagooc
Saturday, August 30, 2008

To take advantage of Cebu’s strength as preferred site for offshore investments especially in IT and tourism sectors, the town of Consolacion in the northern part of Cebu province is now stepping up the construction of its multi-billion commercial facility.

Consolacion Mayor Avelino Gungob Sr., announced that his administration is now doing an extensive feasibility study to develop the 207.9-hectare reclaimed site for the project, to be called Civic Center and Tourism Estate, in Cansaga Bay.

The reclaimed site is now nearing completion and will be part of the town’s five-year development plan.

According to the Mayor, Consolacion is positioning as the ICT and tourism destination in northern Cebu, and this is expected to take off in the next four years.

The Civic Center and Tourism Estate, a mixed-use facility, shall have a government center that occupies 20 hectares; another 20 hectares for commercial centers such as shopping malls and casinos; 80 hectares for tourism-related establishments such as theme parks and hotels, including high-rise buildings that cater to IT firms; and an international golf course with an area of 60 hectares.

A particular attraction in the tourism estate will be an array of food stalls that would offer favorite grilled food items and local delicacies.

"This will be our way of helping even the small investors. We might even have this accredited with the Department of Tourism," Gungob said.

He is optimistic that the project and others will be a magnet that can draw multinational investors to the town.

Gungob noted the interest of some foreign investors in the United States, Malaysia, Korea, and Japan to develop the entire project.

Already, giant developer Sta. Lucia Realty & Development Company announced its interest to put up a commercial and business complex in Consolacion.

Sta. Lucia finance officer for Cebu operations Gerry D. Quintos said in an earlier interview that company is putting in its five-year plan the development of the 9-hectare property located in Consolacion.

He said the proposed project in partnership with a Cebuano capitalist is initially called Sta. Lucia Business and Commercial Center.

He said this future project which is seen to start in the next few years, will house commercial establishments and offices.

“The commercial complex is already in our five-year plan,” Quintos said adding that there are good business prospects in commercial complex development because of Cebu’s vibrant economy, boosted by tourism and ICT investments.

Actually there's an artist's rendering along the highway. It's quite ambitious, but any form of development is always welcome especially in the northern towns, and the Consolacion administration has already claimed that some foreign investors are very interested in the project. I hope this 5 year plan of theirs turns out to be something that will accelerate development in the area.

IMAX is coming to Cebu
Source: www.totallycebu.com

The moment I heard that Imax is coming to Cebu, I couldn’t help but cross my fingers that it will come so soon. SM City Cebu is currently working on an IMAX theater and will make it available to the moviegoers late this 2008 or in 2009. The theater has been anticipated for so long by movie buffs in Cebu. Many have been patiently waiting to try perhaps the best theater experience to date.

IMAX is famous for its surreal digital projector giving moviegoers twice the experience than that of a typical theater. It can play a motion picture either in 2D or in stunning 3D projection as if you are part of the movie. There is a huge difference between the typical film projectors than the digital projectors used by IMAX in terms of picture quality. The Surround Sound system is far more exceptional than that of the typical theater.

IMAX is definitely coming to Cebu and there is no stopping it. Moviegoers can now enjoy the most awaited movies at an out of this world movie experience. Although the price may seem a bit higher, you will not fail to get your money’s worth. All we have to do now is count down the days to a new transition to high quality digital movies.

SineBuano

SineBuano is an independent filmmaking outfit based in Cebu City, Cebu Philippines.

It is dedicated:

* To promote the Cebuano/Visayan multi-faceted culture and identity through film;
* To educate and encourage its members to excel in the various areas of independent; filmmaking;
* To support the independent efforts of Cebuano and Visayan artists and artisans, and;
* To cultivate appreciation and assistance of the local public for its endeavors in filmmaking.

Despite its “demise” in the mid-1950s, albeit with sporadic outbursts in the mid-1970s and recent, the Cebuano/Visayan film remains one of the most articulate regional films in the Philippines.

Not only it brought home prestigious awards from international film competitions like the Asian Film Festival; it also offers Manila the Philippines’ film capital, star-studded performers at times when Manila was sorely lacking of big screen attraction.

The death of the Cebuano/Visayan films is not because it fails to carve a following of its own since the entire Visayas and Visayan-speaking Mindanao are still waiting for the next Cebuano/Visayan movie to come.

In the past, Cebuano and Visayan film producers look at film production as a way of re-asserting their presence in the overcrowded social spaces. As the cost of production since— those local producers determine film production here in Visayas no longer cost-effective.

Cebuano/Visayan films also is a victim to its own star system when the stars relocate to Manila. Thus, the regional industry is left in a vacuum, unable to sustain the its previous star status. Thus, the Cebuano/Visayan films has faded away from the limelight.

What needs to be rebuilt, if Cebuano/Visayan films must continue to be sustainable the next time it hit the screens in southern Philippines, is the re-orientation of the business of filmmaking with which it was producing films in the past.

SineBuano is a membership organization set-up to promote independent filmmaking in Cebu and the central Visayan region to revive of the Cebuano/Visayan film industry.

SineBuano believes it can help in the resuscitation of the Cebuano/Visayan film industry by re-crafting both the methods of production and the business plan that go with it.

Sinebuano chooses to embrace independent filmmaking in introducing this revival effort.

Independent filmmaking is a fertile ground to start this revival process. Not only it is not required to adhere to the redundant formulas of mainstream cinema; it is more venturesome in its selection of stories to tell and in the manner which it will tell those stories. It is a matter of choice that independent filmmaking offers a lot more space in exploring how Cebuano/Visayans can share unique stories of their hearts, their region and their culture.

SineBuano aims to entice the larger public to support Cebuano/Visayan filmmaking efforts with the current accessibility of digital tools in filmmaking and matched with the committed interest in the art of filmmaking, before proceeding to venture into the business of Cebuano/Visayan film industry.

SM to introduce first IMAX Theater in Cebu
By Malou Mozo, 19 Jun 2008
Source: Manila Bulletin

Giant mall Shoemart (SM) capitalized on Cebu's robust retail industry as it introduces of the first IMAX Theater in the Visayas.

As part of its thrust to provide value-added entertainment for moviegoers, SM City Cebu is renovating its Cinema 4 to convert it into an IMAX Theater with a sitting capacity of 400.

"It will be an added attraction for the mall and an exciting development for those who wish for an IMAX experience," said SM City-Cebu Mall Manager Sherry Tuvilla.

IMAX, short for Image Maximum, is a film format created by Canada's IMAX Corp. It has the capacity to display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film display systems A standard IMAX screen is 22 meters wide and 16.1 meters high, but it can be larger.

“The IMAX in Cebu will have a different setup from that of ordinary cinema houses. It will be a stadium-typed theater with taller and wider screens,? she said. Tuvilla said that the facility, which is targeted to open in November, this year, will feature the IMAXDigital, the second to be launched by SM.

Recently, SM Leisure Inc. opened IMAX D-Cinema, the first clarity and digitalized cinema in the country, at SM North EDSA in Quezon City. To create a bigger impact for the scheduled opening of the The IMAX-D at SM City Cebu, Tuvilla said, the mall management is looking forward to feature the screening of the upcoming premier of the latest Harry Potter movie as the pilot movie.

CPA awaits revised study on Liloan int'l port (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/08/31/news/cpa.awaits.revised.study.on.liloan.int.l.port.html)

THE Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) will submit to the Cebu Port Authority (CPA) the revised plan and study for an international port in Liloan, Cebu, said General Manager Angelo Verdan.

Jica has spent P3.8 million for the feasibility study on the proposed Liloan port and submitted it to the CPA during the time of then general manager Jose Jake Marques in 2002.

Verdan said that Jica revised the master plan to reduce the cost and make it more affordable. He is optimistic that the proposed port will push through under the new master plan.

“We have to build a new international port, but we are not in a hurry because the Cebu International Port is not yet overcrowded,” Verdan said.

When the Jica team composed of Yukio Nashida, Takahiko Kishimoto and Atsushi Sato presented the master plan in 2002, then governor Pablo P. Garcia asked why the proposed berthing area was too short.

An ideal international port that can compete with Singapore and other countries in the region should have a berthing area at least 3,000 meters long, but the original proposal for Liloan specified only 1,200 meters.

Another issue raised was the cost. In 2002, Jica already urged the CPA to apply for an initial P9-billion loan from the Japan International Bank for Cooperation (JBIC) for its construction.

Had the CPA followed the suggestion of the Jica team, the proposed international port would have been completed in 2010.

Then general manager Marques had brought up the idea of borrowing P6 billion for the construction of the port and asking stakeholders in the private sector to help build the cargo terminals, among others.

However, the proposed international port was shelved when Marques was suddenly replaced by Mariano Martinez, who suggested that the port be built in Cordova instead.

In 2004, the CPA under Martinez hired a Hong Kong-based firm to conduct a hydrographic survey. The survey revealed that a portion of Cordova town was the best alternative to the proposed site in Liloan and would cost less to build.

Martinez, in an earlier interview, had said the proposed port in Liloan was too costly because Jica recommended filling up about 60 hectares of submerged land so that it would rise by about 12 meters. (EOB)

CEBU — At 30 years old, Kristoffer Villarino is already making his mark in international movies.

For the last four years, the Cebu-born Villarino has been working as head editor for Bigfoot Entertainment, an international production and film financing company with headquarters in Hong Kong and Los Angeles.

Villarino is based at the Bigfoot Studios in Cebu, where the company invested more than P1 billion worth of state-of-the-art production facilities and equipment comparable to those in Hollywood.

He has edited four international films, the most recent of which is “Midnight Movie,” a slasher flick set for distribution in North America, Germany and Thailand.

Villarino was handpicked by the film’s director, Jack Messitt, for the editing job. They met while working on Bigfoot’s “Irreversi,” where Messitt was director of photography. "Midnight Movie" is Jack’s first directorial job. He is very skilled, and for him to put his trust in me felt really good,” said Villarino.

Although a fan more of suspense than of slasher films, Villarino enjoyed the script and immersed himself in the genre to prepare for his work on “Midnight.”

“I sought the classic elements that people would look for, and tried to find ways to take them to our time. ‘Midnight Movie’ has an old-school feel, and I wanted to create something that would stand among the best of them,” said Villarino. The film pays homage to “Jason,” “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” and other teen horror movies of the 1980s.

Villarino edited the film in L.A. “I’m lucky to have had the chance to work in a city with a century of movie history. Wherever I went, I met people from the industry, people who spoke the language of filmmaking,” he recounted happily.

Although technology has advanced significantly in the last 20 years, Villarino revealed that the special effects for “Midnight Movie” remained traditional. “The use of practical special effects gave it a more organic feel. It also meant that the editing process was more straightforward, and that I would be relying on my abilities as an editor rather than on CGI,” he noted.

Objective

Villarino said he remained objective by keeping his distance from the set, as it is essential that editors see the footage from an outsider’s point of view. Each week he met with the director and showed him the edits. “It’s a huge responsibility, being an editor,” he explained. “Editors can make huge decisions about the flow of the film and have to argue with the director if something doesn’t work.”

“Midnight Movie” was finished last April and Villarino said he is happy with the final product. Along with the scary, yet funny, duality of a teen horror movie that he pictured from the start, he felt that it also made a statement on viewer enjoyment of violence. “I find it weird that people enjoy it so much,” Villarino said. “We created one scene where the only thing you hear and see is a killing — we wanted to take away the music and the fancy effects, and make the audience members think about whether this is still ‘fun,’ and about why they’re so entertained by it.”

Villarino had thought of working in the film industry since his high school days at the University of San Carlos. Studying engineering for three years at USC only created greater hunger for art, so he changed gears and graduated with a Fine Arts degree in Advertising.

On working at Bigfoot, Villarino said: “It’s an experience way beyond my dreams, and I never even had to leave Cebu. Who would have thought the making of Hollywood movies would land in my backyard? It’s been wonderful.”

A footwear distributor carrying French brand Sledgers hopes to reach Cebu's growing upscale market with its decision to open a boutique inside SM City Cebu Northwing.

“(The) developments in the real estate here are a very good sign for us to open a boutique here. We are optimistic about the market here because we tested our products before in Rustan's sometime in 2006,” said Johanns Tan, brand manager of Sledgers.

Asked why they decided to open the first branch outside of Manila in Cebu, Tan said: “Cebu is an economic hub. After three years in the market for Sledgers, we felt that it is about time to open a boutique in Cebu.”

The company has plans of opening more stores in the Visayas carrying other brands. Tan, however, said there are no plans to open a Sledgers boutique in Mindanao.

Tan said they are not wary of competition since they target a niche market. He noted that the brand doubles its sales growth year-on-year with 103 percent growth sales in 2006.

Sledgers is distributed in the Philippines by Primer Group-Uniglobe Travelware Co., which also introduced The North Face, Res Toe Run and The Travel Club brands in Cebu.

Products under premiere Classics, the top-of-the-line collection of Sledgers that is often used for formal business wear, costs between P9,000 to P10,000.

Tan said products under this line are designed and manufactured in France, the country where Sledgers originated.

The prices of the brand's Asian Line, on the other hand, can range between P2,290 to P5,490. The Asian Line is manufactured in different countries in Asia including Vietnam, China, Thailand and Vietnam.

Although the store's mainly target senior executives with ages ranging from 35 to 45, it has also develop products, which cater to the younger market, Tan said.

“We have been developing products suitable for the young market which cost P3,790 but still with the comfort and durability they can expect from our products,” he told business reporters in yesterday's store opening.

The SM City Cebu branch is the third Sledgers boutique.

The other boutiques are located in Ayala Trinoma and SM Mall of Asia.

Paghulagway sa Gintang: CAPTURING Space at the Bluewater Gallery (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080830177&type=2)

Sunday, August 31, 2008

The Bluewater Gallery inside the scenic beach paradise of Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort is home to the “Paghulagway sa Gintang: Capturing Space” exhibit of sculptor Jet Florendo.

The exhibit opened last August 8 with University of San Carlos’ College of Architecture and Fine Arts Dean Maxwell Espina and Cebuano-Reggae artist Budoy leading the ribbon cutting ceremony, assisted by Bluewater Gallery owner Victor Vergara.

Known for sculptures often inspired by human struggles and strife, Florendo believes that every piece of wood emits energy and that every piece tells a story that is worthy to be told.

In Paghulagway sa Gintang, Florendo explores the definition of space. Among his works on exhibit are Surreptitious Self Indulgence, a unique combination of carefully smoothed and carved poles pinned in an undefined wood form, which tells of an artist’s silent cravings for unconformity. The artist’s personal favorite, Paragon Lost (A Child teaching her Mother How to fly, traverse common insights that the old teaches the young. His Mother and Child masterpiece depicts the deep relationship of a mother to her child, while Post Rejection Ennui presents Florendo’s exploration to three ordinary “tadtaran”(chopping board) given by Architect Medalla. Ironically, this piece became an instant favorite among the resort’s in-house guests.

“Art is how you turn ordinary things extraordinary, by showing them how beautiful they really are,” Florendo said.

The exhibit will run until September 5. Non-resort guests are requested to contact Mr. Ruben Licera at (032) 232-5411 local 512 for free exhibit viewing appointment.

Cebu archdiocese helps war victims in Mindanao (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080830193&type=2)

Sunday, August 31, 2008

Starting today, the Cebu Archdiocese will be conducting special collections during Masses to raise funds to help the victims of war in Mindanao.

Cebu Archbishop Rircardo Cardinal Vidal has asked all the churches in the archdiocese to donate that will be used provide assistance to over 1,000 families reportedly affected by the turmoil. These families have already been evacuated in safe areas.

The fund that will be collected from the special collection will be given to affected families through the dioceses near the affected areas.

The Cebu Archdiocese said this is just one of the many ways being adopted by different church groups to assist the people who were affected by the on going clash between the MILF rebels and the government troops.

The Jesuits of Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan, for example, has organized a fund raising drive.

Funds generated will be donated to the victims through the archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.

Earlier, Vidal has urged all the Cebuano faithful to pray for peace and order in the war-stricken region.

The prelate has released an Oratio Imperata, or a mandated prayer that shall be implored in all churches in the archdiocese of Cebu through a “consolidated faith in God and concerted prayer to hopefully stop the cruelty and difficulty experienced by the victims of armed conflict in Mindanao.”

In the Lungsoranon, the official publication of the archdiocese of Cebu, Vidal expressed his grief and disappointment over the lighted tension in the south.

The cardinal was depressed on why the conflict rages on until now despite the efforts to find solutions to alleged neglected problems and concerns that pushes Muslim rebels to wage war against the government.

The chaos in Lanao del Norte, North Cotabato and Surangani erupted following the postponement of the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain.

The agreement provides additional territories to Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao which shall be called Bangsamoro Juridical Entity. — Jessica Ann Pareja/WAB

House Bill to turn Camotes Islands into tourist destination (http://www.mb.com.ph/issues/2008/08/31/PROV20080831133902.html)

By MALOU M. MOZO

CAMOTES ISLAND, Cebu – A bill seeking to develop the Camotes group of islands into a tourism destination is expected to materialize once the 14th Congress passes House Bill (HB) 1100, said Rep. Red Durano (5th district, Cebu).

Durano, who bared this new development recently, said HB 1100, which is now pending at the Senate for review, seeks to re-classify 60 percent of Camotes Island as "alienable and disposable land."

Once HB 1100 is passed into law, Durano said the Department of Tourism can then aggressively campaign for the islands’ tourism potentials to local and foreign investors who might be interested to develop the area as a vacation destination.

Durano said while basic infrastructure in the island is already in place, such as passable roads, stable supply of water and electricity, among others, there is still a strong demand for more facilities such as room accommodations before it can lure in more tourists.

He stressed the lack of room accommodations in the island as one of the major problems during the Provincial Government-led Suroy-Suroy Sugbo, an event that promotes countryside tourism.

He said the bill has specified how the whole island will be developed into a world-class tourist destination as it also maps out which areas will be developed for residential and commercial uses.

Durano stressed there used to be several foreign investors who were interested on putting up resort-typed facilities in Camotes Islands but the problem on the issuance of tax declarations for the land they want to develop made them shy away from the plan.

"Tax declarations are not accepted by financial institutions for loan applications," he said, adding that this is the same reason why residents in Camotes Islands have been reluctant to put up businesses that may support tourism in the area.

"The residents are all aware of the land situation but once the Senate approves the bill, the residents can then apply for land titles based on the tax declaration they have," Durano said.

Under HB 1100, the Camotes Lake, which covers 60 hectares including some 50 hectares of mangrove forests, will also remain protected.

Camotes Island has been declared as a mangrove swamp forest reserve under Proclamation 2152 signed in 1981 by then President Ferdinand Marcos.

RLC eyes expanding estate in Cebu (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=52&type=2&sec=71&aid=20080831158)

Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) is looking at expanding its land bank in Cebu, to further take advantage of the province’s dynamic real estate sector in both commercial and residential segments.

RLC, the real estate development arm of conglomerate JG Summit Holdings Inc., is currently active in pursuing several development projects in Cebu, including the five-hectare Condo-Tel project called Amisa in Mactan, the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) building called Cybergate Cebu in Fuente Osmeña, and its recent acquisition of government-owned property at the North Reclamation Area (NRA).

In an interview with JG Summit Holdings Inc., president and chief operating officer (COO) Lance Gokongwei, he said that the company is looking at expanding its land bank in Cebu to prepare for more projects in the next few years.

The company has recently acquired a 4-hectare property at the NRA, near the old White Gold Department Store, and is currently drawing up plans of developing the property for mixed-use development, Gokongwei said.

He said the four-hectare land will have a hotel, commercial complex, residential units, and office buildings.

The young Gokongwei, who is now in-charge of the conglomerate’s operation built by his Cebuano father John Gokongwei, said that Cebu offers huge opportunity for the group’s several business arms, specifically retail, real estate and airline operations.

Although he did not divulge any specific preference of the companies property interest in terms of location, Gokongwei said the company is on constant look out for opportunities to purchase or buy-out good real estate properties in Cebu, to add up to its existing land bank.

RLC is among the most profitable business of JG Summit Holdings Inc., with its 18 malls, 23 residential subdivisions, 22 residential condominiums, six office buildings and three hotels.

In Cebu, the Gokongwei Group is operating Robinson’s shopping mall in Fuente Osmeña, the Midtown Hotel, Robinson’s Supermarket at the Banilad Town Center, and the Blue Coast subdivision in Mactan, Aspen Heights in Consolacion among other affiliate businesses.

So far, RLC’s biggest investment venture in Cebu is the construction of the five-star resort and condotel coastline project called AmiSa located on Mactan Island.

Reportedly, the Gokongwei group expressed interest to buy a property at the South Road Property (SRP).

However, Cebu Investments and Promotion Center (CIPC), which is commissioned to market the 300-hectare property, earlier announced that only three giant real estate developers have reached into successful deal with the Cebu City government, excluding the Gokongwei Group.

CH to earn P3.2B from 2 buyers of SRP lots (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/09/01/news/ch.to.earn.p3.2b.from.2.buyers.of.srp.lots..html)

IN the “next few days or weeks,” the Cebu City Government will reveal the proposals for the sale of portions of the South Road Properties (SRP), which will earn for the city P3.2 billion, City Administrator Francisco Fernan-dez said last Saturday.

The proposals come from two investors whose identities the City is withholding.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña has earlier assured the barangay captains that the negotiations will be finished by the end of the year or early next year.

In an interview over radio dyLA last Saturday, Fernandez said the city will sell 14 hectares worth P1.2 billion at over P8,000 per square meter. This is close to a fourth of the P6-billion loan incurred by the SRP.

The amount, though, will be paid in three installments for the next three years.

Another portion of the SRP, totaling 12 hectares, is estimated to fetch P2 billion at P15,000 per square meter, payable in four years.

The two transactions exclude a joint venture involving 30 hectares.

In the same radio interview, Fernandez admitted the City is having financial difficulties, which is “normal” in any new business.

“Lisod gyud ‘ta ron and we don’t deny that. Pero naa may kita sa SRP. Ang negosyo, sa initial stage, mosakripisyo gyud ka (We’re experiencing difficulties now but the SRP will earn. In any business, one has to make sacrifices initially),” he said.

Bidding

Fernandez, though, told dyLA that the purchase of the lots will still undergo public bidding.

The mayor used to reveal to the public who has made offers to buy SRP lots. He later made it a policy to keep under wraps those who show interest in the property after one investor made the request.

He assured the ba-rangay captains during the Association of Barangay Councils assembly last week that he will immediately fulfill his promise to senior citizens to give each P1,000 as a birthday gift and another P1,000 as Christmas gift once the City earns from the SRP.

Only those who have voted in the 2007 elections, however, will qua-lify, the mayor said, explaining that he does not want the city to be inundated with claims from the elderly who are really from other places.

The mayor also intended to use the sales of the SRP lots for the purchase of a 100-hectare property of the Aznars in Barangay Poblacion Pardo that the City will use to build “a brand-new ba-rangay.”

The mayor had said the new barangay, which will be the home of all informal settlers of the city, will serve as model for the City’s comprehensive drainage plan, and will be a complete place with a church, schools, market, cemetery and bus terminal.

The City needs at least P700 million to implement the drainage plan, and the property the City will buy will help determine if it works. (RHM)

The planned residential and commercial units for NRA lot would surely complement the Aboitiz Persimmon project and the King's "The Loft" project within Mabolo area.

The office units of this will also complement the incoming Quimonda IT Bldg.

In short, this NRA lot of Robinson gives another reason for me (us) to be excited.

Cebu firm completes ship for South Pacific islands (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Nation&p=49&type=2&sec=28&aid=2008083145)

Monday, September 1, 2008

Balamban, Cebu – Aboitiz company FBMA launched the locally-built Betico II, a 57-meter long fast craft roll-on roll-off catamaran capable of carrying 356 passengers and 10 cars.

The vessel with a top speed of 32 knots, would service the City of Noumea and the three major islands of New Caledonia in the South Pacific.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, Roberto Aboitiz president and chief executive officer of FBMA and Tony Moraza, a director of FBMA welcomed here the visiting officials of New Caledonia.

The New Caledonian delegation included President Philippe Gomes of the Southern Province, President Neko Hnepeune of the Loyalty Islands Province, Deputy President Cono Hamu of the Loyalty Islands Province, Alain Descombels member of the Southern Province Assembly and Chairman of the Economic Development Commission, and Christiane Waneissi, adviser on external affairs of the Southern Province.

FBMA won the tender to build the Betico II to replace the older Australian-made Betico I.

FBMA completed the ship at the Cebu drydock after 13 months.

The fast craft was designed to sail in the rough seas of New Caledonia.

The vessel will depart Cebu for New Caledonia after the fitting of the vessel and the sea trials have been completed.

New Caledonia’s mining industry had also aigned a contract with another Aboitiz-owned firm the Metaphil Corp. to build mining equipment for the Caledonia mining operations where at least 5,000 Filipinos are currently working. – Bobit Avila
