Very Very Good News!!!!

From:
Karen S. Fugoso - Karen@study-film.com
Admissions Coordinator

Academics Department
International Academy of Film and Television

Hi Mark,

Thank you for expressing your strong support and concern for us. We really
do appreciate it. We are not pulling out from Mactan, and our expansion or
growth will include the South Reclamation Project. Construction in some of
the areas here in Mactan has been put on hold due to problems in getting
government permits. This has been dealt with properly by Management.
Construction will push through early next year.

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks,

Karen

Who’s First? Guess which resort won first place in an April 2005 survey by Time magazine of its upscale readership in our region on their favorite resort hotel?

Four Seasons in Bali came in third. Bayan Tree, Phuket took second. And, congratulations to Shangri-La, Cebu for landing first place. Note that the same set of readers named their favorite holiday destinations: Bali, first; Phuket, second; and Bangkok, third. So, Mactan and Cebu have more work to do to win a place in the top three.

Cebu is indeed a promising city. However it would be much better if the government has an initiative to unite the Central and Western Visayas through bridges (or tunnels) to become another big economic zone in the Philippines. I think its possible to put a bridge between Iloilo and Bacolod and the southern tip of Negros Oriental to the southern tip of island of Cebu.

SUNSTAR

Cebu has potentials to be another Silicon Valley, says tech analyst

Is Cebu ready to be called the Silicon Island of the Philippines?

“Why not? It is not audacious and not impossible,” said technologist Dennis Posadas during a forum on building the Cebu information technology (IT) industry at the Cebu City Sports Club yesterday.

He told industry players, practitioners, teachers and students who attended the “IT Industry Trends Series: A Quarterly Forum for Building the Cebu IT Industry” that the development of Cebu based on the Silicon Valley model “will depend on how much you are willing to do it.”

Book

Posadas wrote the book, Rice Bowl & Chips: Silicon Valley and Its Asian Equivalents. The book discusses how Asian countries create development hubs using the lessons of Silicon Valley, which include the advantages of innovation.

Silicon Valley refers to Santa Clara Valley in San Jose, California, the principal site of the United States electronics industry.

At the forum, Posadas presented the concept of “Silicon Island” and how technology entrepreneurship can contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Innovation

According to Posadas, the Silicon Valley model includes the creation of an innovation ecosystem, promotion of the culture of technology entrepreneurship, provision of a critical mass of quality professionals and the availability of a legal and financial framework.

The Silicon Valley model is putting together all its resources in one place, he said.

In an interview, Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) executive director Bonifacio Belen said one of the elements of the Silicon Valley model is proximity.

“Cebu already has that advantage. All we have to do is to come up with concrete moves in replicating the Silicon Valley model and make the most of our advantage, and that is proximity where people can go from one place to another (with ease),” he said.

Road map

He told Sun.Star Cebu that Cedf-it would come up with a Cebu IT road map with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) in March next year during the 2nd Cebu IT Summit.

Posadas stressed the importance of technology entrepreneurship to spur the country’s economic growth, “which will be made by entrepreneurs.”

“So we need to develop technology entrepreneurs, improve (the) culture of risk-taking and venture capital,” he said.

He also pointed out that Cebu needs to evaluate its concerns first, such as how many skilled individuals there are in every technology niche, which technologies they are strong in and the current state of its top colleges and universities.

The forum was a joint undertaking of Cedf-it, Innove Communications and CCCI.

It would really suit Cebu's hilly background - plus the idea of putting a Sto Nino statue on a hilltop like Rio's Christ - that would really rock! :)
Ok it's extremely kitsch but fun!

I think if Cebu needs to have an identity that speaks for itself, then it has to avoid looking like other cities from other parts of the world. We have to be more innovative in creating something that is distinctively our own. For example,New York is New York, Rio is Rio, HK is HK not just by looks but by what it feels. Even Metro Manila has a distinct character of its own, so why not make Cebu as simply, Cebu. There is something more than tall scrapers, modern architechture and marvelous engineering that defines the character of the city in the truest sense.

Japanese consortium bags Cebu-Negros power deal

By NIEL V. MUGAS, The Manila Times Reporter

State-owned National Transmission Corp. (TRANSCO) signed Friday a multibillion-peso contract with the Japanese consortium of Kanematsu and J. Power Systems for the construction of the Cebu-Negros interconnection uprating project, which links major transmission lines in Luzon and Visayas.

Kanematsu and J. Power Systems secured the P2.35 billion contract for the survey, design, supply of materials and equipment, installation and commissioning of the submarine cables and cable terminal stations for the project.

Part of the transmission system installed in the early nineties, the Cebu-Negros link requires uprating to improve its transfer capability. Meanwhile, the project’s financing will come from the Miyazawa Fund administered by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

Besides the submarine cables, the contract also includes the installation of a 24-count fiber optic cable system between the towns of Suba and Pondol in Cebu.

Alan T. Ortiz, TRANSCO president, said that while the company is committed to enhancing the power transmission system in the country, it is also committed to improve the telecommunication infrastructure.

"TRANSCO has been building these underwater power highways all over the country but we’re also helping expand and modernize the telecommunication system with the laying of fiber optics cable alongside our submarine power cables," Ortiz said.

The initiative will also involve the expansion of the Naga-Cebu substation and the construction of a new control building in the substation.

Once operational in April 2007, the upgraded interconnection system will double the 100-megawatt carrying capacity of TRANSCO's existing submarine cable between Leyte and Negros via the Leyte-Cebu link.

Moreover, due to the uprating project, the Cebu-Negros link is expected to efficiently deliver geothermal power sourced from Leyte and the excess capacity of power plants from Luzon.

The additional power will solve the ongoing power shortage in the Visayas grid.

Ortiz is confident that the uprating of the Cebu-Negros link will lead to the electrification of more areas in the Visayas, which will help provide power to more commercial and industrial establishments.

Submarine cables and cable terminal stations for the Cebu-Negros uprating are packaged as Schedule I while overhead transmission lines and substation components are packaged as Schedule II.

In late October, TRANSCO also completed the P3.7-billion Leyte-Cebu interconnection uprating project.

Both projects are part of TRANSCO's Visayas Transmission Augmentation program, which aims to build a robust and resilient transmission network in the region, in compliance with the requirements of the National Grid Code.

DUMAGUETE CITY - Tired of hearing about so many infrastructure projects for Cebu, government officials from Siquijor and Oriental Negros griped about the lack of attention to their provinces’ needs.

Siquijor Gov. Orlando Fua, who has long raised the need for an airport to improve access to his province, questioned yesterday the proposed resolution on the construction of a parallel runway at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin Perdices accused Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 Director Juanito Abergas of giving in to “the pressure from officials in Cebu.”

Fua and Perdices raised their complaints during the Regional Development Council’s (RDC) full council fourth quarter meeting, attended by heads of national line agencies, local officials and private sector representatives from Central Visayas.

Cebu, Perdices said, is “becoming like Imperial Manila.”

It wasn’t the first time Cebu took the heat for cornering most of the projects approved for Central Visayas.

In August last year, Governor Fua also objected to a resolution thanking President Arroyo for the proposed transfer of the Department of Tourism head office to Cebu. He objected to one RDC member’s saying that the transfer recognized Cebu’s place as “the tourism capital of the region.”

Fua had said: “There’s Negros and Bohol, but not Siquijor. You should not have an imperialistic attitude. That’s why some are complaining that projects are only poured into the province and cities of Cebu.”

No pressure

Abergas explained that the parallel runway is not a proposal of the DPWH, but of the RDC 7’s infrastructure development committee (IDC), which is composed of representatives from all the provinces. He just happened to be the one who presented the resolution.

“There is no pressure coming from anyone,” the DPWH director said.

Still, Fua questioned the supposed need for the project, citing that there is no congestion problem at the Mactan airport.

Romeo Bersonda, operations head of MCIA, said he agreed with Fua but explained that the parallel runway is part of the plan to prepare the airport for an increase in passengers in the next few years.

He said it was also presented to the IDC by private sector representative Valeriano “Bobit” Avila, who also sits in the MCIA Authority board.

Abergas said that like any project, a feasibility study is yet to be done on proposed parallel runway and the government will need to look for funding for it.

Priorities

That was not the end of it, though.

Perdices continued to lament the seeming lack of attention to their provinces, when the council also took up the proposed resolution for DPWH 7 to conduct a feasibility study on a third Mactan-Cebu bridge.

Even before the item was taken up, members of the RDC 7 already started to laugh.

Perdices, however, seriously commented that there are “smaller bridges that are more needed and cost less” that DPWH 7 should prioritize.

He also reminded the RDC 7 of its responsibility to set priorities in projects.

Teresa Fernandez, who heads the social development committee of the RDC 7, advised Perdices to attend the meetings of the IDC and endorse the projects he wants to be given attention.

Abergas assured that they will not refuse any project endorsed to them, but reminded the full council that the economic viability of any infrastructure has to be considered before it can be built.

Home court

He also said the DPWH 7 lacks personnel to attend to all the projects at the same time.

“You’re undermanned and there are so many requests. Why don’t you instead focus on pending requests?” Perdies questioned Abergas.

Abergas assured him that he will make sure all pending projects for Dumaguete City are acted on.

“Can I have it before my term ends? If you don’t, I’ll have to extend my term,” he said, laughing.

Oriental Negros Gov. George Arnaiz, who is RDC 7 chairman, said local chief executives also have to follow up on the projects they need.

After staying silent for a few minutes while Fua and Perdices questioned Abergas, Arnaiz said: “You must understand these guys are located in Cebu. I’m not insulting you (Abergas) but we can’t expect these guys (DPWH) to do the work for us.”

While the resolution on the feasibility study for the third bridge was approved, the body referred the proposal on the airport’s parallel runway back to the IDC for study.

Dumaguete mayor, Siquijor governor gripe
over Cebu's multibillion-peso projects

by Wilfredo Rodolfo III

A CITY mayor and a governor of Central Visayas yesterday criticized the manner Cebu has been getting bigger-funded projects during the Regional Development Council (RDC) 7 meeting in Dumaguete City yesterday.

Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin Perdices and Siquijor Gov. Orlando Fua said the billions of pesos worth of projects - to construct two more passenger tubes for the Mactan airport, a new ramp, a parallel runway, a new terminal building, as well as a third bridge to span Cebu and Mactan island - are all concentrated in one place, Cebu.

"We in Dumaguete do not even have our airport yet, but Cebu is already asking for a second airport terminal and runway, and a third bridge," Perdices said.

Perdices and Fua reacted to the council's Infrastructure Development Committee (IDC)'s endorsement of the six multi-billion peso projects for funding.

"People say there's an imperial Manila, and now an imperial Cebu. And it's turning to be like that," Perdices added.

Fua, on the other hand, said "At the moment there are many other more important projects that needed funds, smaller funds."

"There are other bridges that are more important. Smaller bridges that needed smaller fundings," he added.

"The regional offices who are all based in Cebu must be receiving some pressure from Cebu officials so they (Cebu) could get more projects," Perdices also said.

No official from Cebu was present at the meeting except for Tessie Fernandez who represented the private sector.

The IDC chairman, Manuel Rabacal, was also absent.

Argeo Melisimo of Bohol, Economic Development Committee (EDC) chairman, came to the defense of Cebu, saying the central island's being the "gateway" to other provinces has been confirmed and identified by tourism and economic players.

"It has been discussed and deliberated that the lack of facilities in Cebu is creating a bottleneck and it affects all of us," Melisimo said.

According to IDC reports, Mactan airport officials wanted to build two more passenger tubes on top of its existing two to accommodate more aircraft at any given time. The cost - P110 million for both tubes.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) also wanted to expand the northeastern ramp to allow the airport to conduct purely cargo operations in this area. The existing ramp can only accommodate three wide-bodied passenger and cargo aircrafts at one given time. The authority did not indicate how much the project will cost.

The IDC also presented a proposal for the construction of a P1 billion passenger terminal at the Mactan airport, envisioned to complement the present terminal building which, according to airport officials, is 90 percent utilized.

The need for a second passenger terminal was recognized in view of the steady increase in passenger traffic into and out of Mactan in recent years, and in anticipation of the entry of more airlines in the Asian region.

Construction of the project is estimated to last four years. It will be built inside the adjacent Mactan-Benito Ebuen Air Base.

According to MCIAA data, the existing terminal has served close to 2.1 million passengers (both domestic and international) in the first three quarters of the year alone.

Another project at the Mactan airport is the construction of a new parallel runway to complement the existing P3.3 km runway now utilized for mixed operations - aircraft takeoff and landing - and for both passenger and cargo aircraft.

The proposed 4.4 km runway is expected to reduce congestion and aircraft delay. It will be built at a cost of P7 billion and will entail the reclamation of the shorelines of Barangay Ibo.

The length of the new runway will allow Mactan airport to accommodate even the biggest aircraft in use today.

However, the council decided to send back the runway proposal to the committee level after a lengthy deliberations.

The third Mactan-Cebu bridge, on the other hand, has been endorsed for feasibility study.

Submit

The IDC said that instead of complaining, other LGU's should submit project proposals so these could be deliberated on.

Director Juanito Abergas of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 explained that it is only Cebu that keeps getting endorsements for its projects because it's the only one submmitting projects for review.

"You submit your projects and we'll see to it that if they meet all the requirements, they will be endorsed," Abergas, a member of the IDC, said.

"Committees work that way. You really need to submit proposals so they could deliberate on them," Tessie Fernandez, the chairperson of RDC's Social development committee, said.

In response, the local government officials from Oriental Negros, Bohol and Siquijor moved to revise an RDC rule requiring the committees of the council to hold meetings in the other provinces, not just in Cebu.

"This is our chance to submit our infrastructure projects to you," Perdices said.

Abergas promised Perdices and Oriental Negros Gov. George Arnaiz that the feasibility study that his office was conducting on the Dumaguete-Tanjay diversion road would be ready soon.

Before each full council meeting, the IDC deliberates on project proposals, checks on documents to verify economic viability and submits its recommendation to the full council for endorsement either for funding or for feasibility study.

The projects needed the endorsement of the RDC so they would be listed as priorities for funding by the national government.

Perdices wanted the full council,"not just the committee," to determine project priorities.

Except for the runway proposal, the other projects were endorsed for funding after the members recognized the need to implement them to help Cebu City in its hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in December next year.

The council also endorsed the feasibility study on the third bridge on condition that other studies on projects in Oriental Negros and Bohol would also be fast-tracked.

"We in Dumaguete do not even have our airport yet, but Cebu is already asking for a second airport terminal and runway, and a third bridge," Perdices said.

Dumaguete should otherwise be supportive of the cebu airport expansion bec if more international tourists will come, chances are, the spill-over will be distributed to other parts of the region. They just have to double their efforts in promoting their city. Also, i think we are just getting our fair share of the budget.

Cebu won't ask for a second Airport if there were no problems regarding the passenger traffic. MCIA should be prioritized first coz it's the gateway not only in Cebu but of the whole Visayas and also Minadanao so if these current problems of the Cebu airport wouldn't be addressed imediately, it will affect the economy not only of Cebu but including Dumaguete, Visayas and Mindanao. If we think it deeper, Cebu should have more projects considering its size and importance but with it's current status, Cebu's has very poor infras compared to Dumaguete.

Cebu Holdings sets P0.8B
Ayala Center expansion

CEBU Holdings Inc. is poised to pour about P1 billion in various projects, including the expansion of Ayala Center Cebu.

Cebu Holdings president Rene D. Almendras said the company plans to invest P800 million for the expansion of Ayala Center Cebu alone.

Almendras said the expansion project would include the construction of a building that would be connected to the existing mall structure.

However, he said, the proposed building is still on the planning stage so he could not give out any details.

"We are implementing next year the lagoon redevelopment and, hopefully, a new building attached to the mall to expand the floor area," Almendras said.

The lagoon area redevelopment would involve the construction of leasable area, turning it into something unique, he said.

The building would be built at the area across the City Sports Club.

The lagoon project alone would make available additional leasable area of 7,000 square meters, Almendras said.

He said the company also plans to put up more parking spaces to meet the requirement of the local government.

The company, which celebrated its 17th anniversary yesterday, decided to implement more projects starting next year in the wake of a good performance this year.

"We're very happy because its been a good year. We seem to have done well this year. Our stock price is doing well," Almendras said.

Almendras noted that the company continued to grow and its revenue streams were stronger. "Every aspect of the operations is showing growth," Almendras told reporters.

With the continued growth of the company's retail operations, the executive said Cebu Holdings would be investing huge amount of money in Ayala Center in the next three years.

According to Almendras, the company has continued to reposition the mall as a lifestyle destination, not just a shopping area.

Formed after an Ayala-led consortium acquired the 44.6-hectare lot owned by the Cebu provincial government in 1988, Cebu Holdings developed the Cebu Business Park, which was then envisioned to become Cebu's business and financial center.

The company built its anchor project, the Ayala Center Cebu, that followed a spate of construction projects resulting in the changing skyline of Cebu City.

The commercial center operations has been a major contributor to Cebu Holdings revenues over the years.

The company has also been implementing changes inside the mall - renovating theaters, developing the entertainment center and transferring the food outlets to the level where the cinemas are located.

WOW! AYALA CENTER CEBU PHASE IIa!

Well, making Cebu a silicon valley would entain offering microsoft to invest here right? Then the next thing Cebu needs is to get yahoo and google to invest here. On top of that, we need people manufacturing microchips and basically improving our infrastructure to replicate that of Silicon Valley in California. Well, I believe we can do that but its not achievable in the short and middle term so to speak. What Cebu can do for now is to have a one-step-at-a-time attitude and build up its name. As of now, we just started to introduce Cebu to the world. Unlike all of our competitor-cities we lack behind in infrastructure and marketing / advertising. Let’s first make Cebu an IT hub, eg. enabling the whole insland to access the internet thru WIFI, and a tourism hub or a staging point to all the tourism areas in Visayas and Mindanao. Then, if we are really serious in building up the name as the next Silicon Valley, we shall start planning on its implementation.

Before officials of Siquijor and Dumaguete City complain any further about infrastructure projects in Cebu, a Cebu-based official has this reminder.

All projects proposed by the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) will be funded out of its own coffers and not by any government agency, said General Manager Adelberto F. Yap.

Yap made the clarification after learning that Siquijor Gov. Orlando Fua questioned MCIAA’s plan to build a parallel runway in Mactan airport, during last Friday’s meeting of the Regional Development Council (RDC).

Fua complained that while there is now a plan to build a parallel runway in Mactan, no airport has been constructed yet in Siquijor Province, although he has long asked for one.

Instead of endorsing the project, the RDC sent back the runway proposal to its infrastructure development committee for further study.

The RDC approved a separate resolution calling for a feasibility study on a third Mandaue-Mactan bridge, but talk of the project again provoked complaints about “Imperial Cebu.”

Yap, however, stressed that the proposed parallel runway, which is estimated to cost about P1 billion, will be paid for using MCIAA funds and future loans, which the MCIAA itself will pay back.

The MCIAA submitted the project proposal to RDC for evaluation and as a formality, as required by the government.

The MCIAA is not asking for funding, Yap pointed out, but is following protocol.

It merely wants the RDC to determine if the project is, he added.

Besides, the MCIAA has it own charter and its own policy-making body, the manager pointed out.

“We can decide on our own. However, we recognize the importance of the RDC so that we submitted to that office our project proposals,” Yap said.

Had Governor Fua studied the MCIAA’s project proposals before making any comments, he might appreciate that any improvements in Mactan airport are a come-on for tourists to visit not just Cebu, but the rest of the region.

Using its own charter, and without passing through other government planning offices, MCIAA was able to implement its newly-completed P83.4-million runway asphalt overlay using its own funds, said Yap.

The MCIAA has also earmarked, from its own funds, P70 million for an administration building and P135 million for split-tube bridges for aircraft. Both will be subjected to a bidding soon.

Records showed that as of August 2005, MCIAA had P2.62 billion in assets. It earns P240 million annually from the rental paid by Mactan Economic Zone locators. (EOB)

Imperial Cebu tag
By Frank Malilong
The Other Side, SUNSTAR CEBU

We used to be (still are?) the loudest in grumbling against Imperial Manila. Now own neighbors are griping against Imperial Cebu.

There's a hint of “crab mentality” here but it would be foolish to think that that is all what it is. Some of the region’s elected officials are complaining they’re not getting enough attention from the regional offices of national government agencies. Most, if not all, of these offices are based in Cebu. Why don’t these civil servants, especially the regional directors and their assistants, remove their fat behinds from their chairs and make the rounds of the other areas in their jurisdiction?

But while the complaint about not getting enough attention from government’s regional offices may be valid, the tag Imperial Cebu, is grossly inappropriate. Cebu doesn’t make decisions for its neighbors the way Manila does for the country.

If, on the other hand, the label has something to do with our unquestioned status as Queen of the South, then it is well deserved. Instead of drowning themselves in envy, the other local government units in the region should take a more positive attitude. How has Cebu managed to inch forward even as the country floundered?

It couldn’t have been that we have enjoyed unfair advantage in the distribution of government resources. Even assuming that we have received more than what our neighbors think we should (receive), it is probably because we have been able to justify it. The construction of a parallel runway at the Mactan airport, for example, is necessary because of the projected increase in the volume of air traffic in the area.

We should all learn how to plan. You can’t construct a runway in six months so you have to plan years ahead. In any contest, those without a vision will always bring up the rear. Or end up crying unfair.

I don't have any idea and I am confused. Will the lagoon be destroyed for the construction of leasable area? Oh no!!!
If it will be destroyed, maybe it will just be rezoned or whatever, so we'll have floating restaurants?!? lol.

WELCOME TO THE
BUSINESS AND LEISURE CAPITAL OF THE PACIFIC

With an island-long stretch of sandy beaches and beautiful resorts
complementing a bustling metropolis, it’s no wonder Cebu is oftentimes referred to as
THE business and leisure paradise in the Pacific.

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/640/head11kl.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

“Right in the Heart” Location

Cebu is literally situated in the center of the 7,107 islands that make up the Philippine archipelago. Located in the Visayas region, Cebu has the convenient luxury of being in the middle of all trade and commerce from Luzon to Mindanao. So, when you talk about being in the loop, Cebu is definitely it.

“Hey, Joe!” People and Language

Home to approximately 3 million, Cebu is known for its warmth and hospitality. You may immediately notice this, as even people you’ve never met before call you by first name and hug you like long lost family. Okay, so your name isn’t actually Joe, but to most Cebuanos, it’s all in the ritual of welcoming foreigners to the big Cebuano family. Visayan is the native tongue, while Tagalog and English are commonly understood and spoken – very well! You won’t have to use that tiny pocket dictionary after all!

“Present, Sir!” Education

Cebu is the education center for Central and Eastern Visayas as well as Northern Mindanao. At last count, there are around a dozen colleges and universities in Cebu and probably twice that number of high schools. Literacy is high and with the quality of education people are receiving here, it’s no wonder more and more international companies recruit from our region. In fact, the Philippines is ranked #1 in the availability of knowledge-based job and workers worldwide, and ranked 4th among Asian nations in labor quality, according to a survey conducted by the U.S. based Meta Group.

“Tourist Country” Attractions

Imagine pristine white sand beaches and azure tropical waters. Cebu is home to the best resorts in the country and is considered by many as the diving capital of the Philippines. And the best thing about Cebu is that many of the beaches and resorts are only about an hour's drive from downtown - so you can snorkel by day and dress for cocktails at night. Need we say more?
But if you think that’s all there is to Cebu, think again! Cebu, being the oldest city in the Philippines, is dotted with remarkable landmarks rich in history and culture, each with a fascinating story to tell about this enchanting island in the Pacific.

“Life’s a Beach” Climate
The good news is that Cebu has fine weather all year round. Cebu enjoys a tropical climate with moderate variations in weather and temperature. So bask away under the tropical sun. Just don’t forget your sun block.

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/9540/head26su.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Why Cebu?
Bask in the verve and vibrance of Cebu. Where you find corporate glass towers that reflect the sky as clearly as the nearby sea. Street snaking through the busy cosmopolis and turning into rugged trails that lead to sprawling flowers fields. People forever seeking new excitement under the heartening sun – for he Cebuanos have always been known to be eager adventures.

A city of many facets It is he melding of character that has catapulted to Cebu to become one of the Philippines’ fastest growing economic miracles, ranking among the top three tourist destination in the Asia Pacific corridor. Here corporate stripes are worn, to later thrown away as the beaches beckon to a refreshing nightcap. Truly an ideal environment to do business with pleasure.

So, why Cebu? The Island. Its People. We have had four centuries of being discovered by the world. And we invite you to discover today - this island, this people.

So this means the momentum is back after the financial crisis? Coz based on their plans for Cebu Business Park, a simultaneous counstruction of a close to a hundred scrapers within the park but it was hampered by the 1997 financial crisis, infact no high rises were built within the park since the financial crisis situation. I think this will be the 1st time a high rise will be built within the park just across the Entertainment Center and so with the ACC major expansion and I hope more to come tsk tsk tsk

Cebu's progress is Central
Visayas' progress-governor

CEBU Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday urged other local government units in Central Visayas to look at the overall impact of major infrastructure projects in Cebu province.

"Rather than be labeled as "imperial Cebu", I would like to think that Cebu is reaching out to the rest of the Visayas, and hopefully, be a factor for the entire Visayas and the entire country to achieve economic prosperity," Garcia said.

"It is always good to look beyond our individual concerns and consider the bigger picture where certainly if we link up and join hands in this endeavor to reach progress and economic prosperity, we will be able to do this faster," she added.

Garcia was reacting to comments made by some officials in other provinces in Central Visayas about the manner Cebu has cornered multibillion-peso projects.

Garcia said implementation of big infrastructure projects in Cebu could not be avoided because the province is the center in Central Visayas.

Garcia said that while big projects were given to Cebu, these were also a big help to the entire Visayas region.

"I would rather want to consider Cebu as a hub, we are at the center but we will radiate nga gikan kanato, makatabang usab kita sa pag (that from us, we can help to)-develop and to promote the rest of the areas not just in region 7 but the whole Visayas," she said.

Garcia said the international airport in Cebu was very important as it is through this facility that foreign tourists visit every place in the region.

Garcia also said that approval of projects in the infrastructure committee of the RDC depends on what is presented from the different localities.

She suggested to other LGUs to present their project proposals at the infrastructure committee so that they could be discussed and endorsed to the full council.

Garcia said she understood the sentiments of Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin Perdices and Siquijor Governor Orlando Fua.

Perdices and Fua complained during the Regional Development Council (RDC) 7 full council meeting last Friday that Cebu was being prioritized in the implementation of big projects. Garcia said she was not taking the officials' comments negatively.

She said the friendship and the good relationship among the officials of Central Visayas remained intact.

Garcia said both Fua and Perdices are her personal friends.

"I think that tingale wa lang na nila makita (perhaps they did not see it yet), but I would understand their comments because mayor Perdices and Fua are also after the progress of their own local government units," Garcia said.

" But as a governor, nakasabot kaayo ko sa ilang panlantaw (I understand their perspective), even us, we are also looking at our own areas or territories, but it is also always more advantageous for all of us to look at the bigger picture," she added.

Garcia said she did not attend the RDC meeting last Friday because she visited Bantayan island that day.

She assured to give her side on the issue in the next RDC meeting.

Sorry @slerz, I was still young at 1995. How was Ceboom back then?.. AFAIK, Ayala Center opened at 1994.

Before the establishment of the CBP, Cebu was a typical Cebu and a typical Philippine city without the intervention of the international business world nearly focusing and depending its future in a simple Philippine way of economy.
Ceboom back then is very very promising and fulfilling... during the establishment of the CBP, Cebu entered into a new convergence or a setting up for a new start into globalization, for a ready to compete internationally.... but the financial crisis slowed down the momentum of a rapid growth for Cebu but still in a process of gettin there.
And Now, no doubt that Cebu's modernity is already being compared internationally regarding its economy and tourism...:okay:

This church was actually built as a "bluff."

The reason why the builders topped the bell tower with a moslem type onion dome was to fool the invading moros from Mindanao.. Note that the church stands on a hill and overlooks the sea..

Inside the church are numerous "lapidas" of the faithful departed scattered on the floors and in the walls, most of home belonged to the well to do of Carcar town during the Spanish times..

Bro, actually I've seen the picture of that minitiure model of Ayala Center with the "Twin Towers" that look like Oakwood, which was posted by markiiboi or sugbuanon?? Actually, dugay na kaayo na siya nga minitiure (how do u spell minitiure, hehehe)...

If I remember it right, this was once displayed at the entrance of Basement 2. During that time, Ayala Center was still less than five years old -- highschool pa ko atu... hehehe...

I think the model is a rendering of what Ayala Center Cebu will look like in the "Final Phase" which of course will happen gradually in the near future.. It's nice to hear that they will be expanding na next year, hopefully! At least those ugly beams (aesthetically done thanks to the wonders of architecture!) facing Marriot will be finally put to use...

CHI to invest P1B more in Cebu

THE Ayala conglomerate, through Ayala Land Inc. Cebu, an affiliate of Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI), has invested some P7 billion in Cebu in its 17 years of presence in the province. CHI president Rene Almendras told reporters on the sidelines of the formal celebration of CHI’s 17th anniversary in Ayala Center Cebu (ACC) over the weekend that the Zobel de Ayalas have committed to infuse in Cebu’s economy P1 billion more in the next three years. “We are happy (with our performance). CHI has continued to grow despite the economic crisis the country has gone through. Our growth may not be that spectacular, but we are growing and we will continue to look for opportunities,” he said. Almendras said one of the opportunities CHI is looking at is in the South Road Property (SRP), formerly south reclamation project. “The Cebu City government is offering us a portion of the SRP. But we are still studying what project to venture into in the property,” he said. The expansion and renovation of the ACC, CHI’s maiden commercial project in Cebu, is the company’s biggest and immediate project, which will be implemented next year, Almendras said.

Investment

He said some P800 million of the company’s one billion additional investment will go to the ACC expansion and renovation project. The project includes the construction of a new building at the southern part of the mall and the renovation of the lagoon, which will soon have another name. These developments are intended to add more than 7,000 square meters to ACC’s gross leasable area, which is already 99 percent occupied. Almendras earlier said ACC has been receiving inquiries from merchants who want to get in to the mall. The renovations will also “bring Cebu lifestyle to a new level.” “We are not going to change Cebu’s lifestyle but we are going to focus and highlight its strengths,” he said. CHI will also be doing more residential projects next year that will cater to the housing needs not only of the high-end market but of the middle-income as well.

@tigidig14........ The orthodox churches in Russia and Turkey were actually influenced by Moslem designs, thus the said mosque like structure of their churches.. In Carcar it was different.. If you take a closer look at all the old Spanish churches in Cebu and even throughout the country, the architecture is mainly Baroque or Romanesque..

@sugbuanon, slerz...... Dili Palace oi.. I just said Palace something coz I forgot the real name but I think it's Tower Palace and will be built in Luzon Avenue (diha dapit sa Kaona Grill..)

@sugbuanon.... bai sugbuanon, the two storey showroom you told me about, asa ni siya? I hope it's not the fenced lot atbang sa Driving range, a few walks away from Unionbank... Sayang pod kung dili highrise ilang itukod.. :)

anyway, with the construction of two more highrise buildings, the real estate value would surely surge up... so therefore they can't just waste their money building unproductive shorties...

@sugbuanon

bai i've noticed that Crown Regency has stopped working.. Could it be nga ila pa gipa-uga ang semento before continuing with the succeeding floors?? :)

RP begins preparing for hosting ASEAN summit next year

GENALYN D. KABILING

KUALA LUMPUR (via PLDT) — With an initial P1 billion in funds, the Philippines has began preparations this early for its hosting of next year’s regional summit of Southeast Asian Nations.

President Arroyo yesterday took along several local government officials from Cebu to the 11th ASEAN summit so they could learn from, and possibly outshine, the hosting of Malaysia.

The province, which gave the largest votes to Mrs. Arrroyo in the May 2004 presidential elections, will be the site of the ASEAN summit in December 2006.

Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia said he will hold several meetings with the ASEAN Secretariat in the next days about the summit preparations, including security, lodgings and accomodations and protocol.

The preparations will include "everything from the point of touchdown of the plane to the actual reception, how the delegates were ushered to their waiting vehicles down to the billeting to the actual sessions," she said in an interview with Manila-based reporters at the Mandarin Hotel.

Kuala Lumpur plays host to the 11th ASEAN Summit, the First East Asia Summit and other related summits from December 11 to 14. Malaysians reportedly spent at least P4 billion for the staging of the summit in their country.

>From the one-billion-peso fund set aside by the President, Garcia said they will spend some P250 million for the construction of a "world-class multi-events center" where the summit conventions could be held.

The megadome structure, she added, would be put up on a four-hectare property in Mandaue City.

The province will also do some "spring-cleaning" and minor renovations of hotels and lodgings for additional presidential suites for the dignitaries, she added.

Garcia also defended Cebu as the ideal site of the international event because of its stable political and security environment.

"The local executives from the provinces and the towns are joining hands here and we are setting aside politics. I guess this is the Cebuano pride that allows us to rise above our petty political differences when we see that what we are doing is good for Cebu," she said.

On security, Garcia said the police can easily lock down the province for the safety of the ASEAN leaders and delegates rather than in Metro Manila which has a wide area of coverage.

She said the local officials also plan to declare the summit meetings a holiday to keep the public from the streets as part of security and traffic management.

"Cebu will certainly roll out the red carpet and do everthing that has been done in order to showcase our country," she said.
