Ok...I hope the people in the media would change it into "street dancing and competition" too...so people would not say it is strictly "Mardi Gras" or to avoid confusion, maybe we can use the smaller letter for common nouns instead of proper. :nocrook:

By the way, the weather here in Metro Cebu is conducive enough to walk around. Cool breeze, as I call it. I hope the tomorrow's weather will be same as today, or yet better than that. :)

nope, i remember watching sinulog near the old white gold, one time i was able to see the sinulog sa cebu business park pud, cbp was part of the route, siguro marketing ploy din ng cebu city government para sa cebu business park during that time kay bago pa man ang cbp ato.

Welcome din bai @jepoy83... dunno din who coined that word. Could have been some foreigner or someone who had been to some of the world's grandest and fabulous Mardi Gras' such as in New Orleans and have likened the Sinulog in a way similar to it but actually its different because Sinulog is basically more of a religious event rather than a "social" event per se. and Yes, the term doesn't coincide with the event bec. Mardi Gras literally means "Fat Tuesday" in French terms which is celebrated during the lenten season and Sinulog is celebrated in honor of the child Jesus every 3rd sunday of January.:)

Maybe so...because that said festival indeed became so famous that it made a trademark in the English vocabulary. It has been synonymous to anything that is related to revelry and street dancing. I dunno if there is a common noun nowadays officially added to the dictionary but it seems that the word itself has evolved from a specific event to an event related to the connotation of street dancing.

These ballons that are being released contain prayer petitions,

The merging of prehispanic religion and Christianity comes alive as a kid invokes a prayer to the "Bathalang Bata" before dancing the Sinulog in its most original form. These guys will perform at Casa Gorordo on Monday.

whiteknight January 18th, 2009, 08:15 AM For the benefit of overseas Filipinos, Cebuanos, tourist and festival afficionados, you may witness Cebu's Sinulog Festival Live through media streaming here:
We are now watching the live feed of Skycable diri sa Bay Area. Sila ang pina ka claro ug signal. Ang problema lang is tons of advertisement plugs ug kining announcer kuno ni siya sa Y101 nga magsigue ug interview ug mga senador ug uban pang public officials. We don't need all that crap. Why can't they concentrate on the parade and the stage presentations.
Anyway, Happy Fiesta to everyone even though there's a drizzle.

SleMarKen January 18th, 2009, 09:20 AM I was surprised that ASAP of ABSCBN even prioritized Obama theme for today's show instead of Sinulog...maayo pa ang SOP giacknowledge ang celebrations sa Sugbo...The former, emphasizing on American event rather than Filipino....paita.
:okay:
But infairness sa ABS CBN Cebu :okay::okay:
Nagpasalamat kaayo ko for their massive Sinulog coverage... From Abellana sports complex, Mango ave., Fuente, Basilica, Crown Regency hangtod sa sky through their Sky Patrol... Sa DYAB stickam all in one, plus updates of DYAB reporters all over Metro Cebu.
Maka chat pa gyud nya naapay naka ila nako sa stickam:D Taga skyscrapercity ba daw ko kay sige sad daw sila lurk sa forum:okay::okay:
ABS CBN Cebu and DYAB - the best coverage ever for me (worldwide)

rustyboi January 18th, 2009, 07:04 PM i can't sleep, i still can't get over the Sinulog beat which keeps playin' on my mind. this is my first time to attend the SINULOG FESTIVAL in almost a decade. yes, in such a short span of time, the festival has gone a really long way in terms of attendance. we were at the Grand stand kanina and was really havin' a great time. around noon, it took me almost 2 hours just to walk from Ayala Center to the Sports Complex (Main venue). grabeha. I finally got to see how it's like to watch a Sinulog Grand Finale. it's way different than just watching it on TV. to those who are contented with just by seeing it on TV or over the internet, you havta come here in Cebu.
The 15-minute Ayala Center Fireworks last night was really really awesome. Pyroworks did a really really good job. just like what it said on a newspaper, they are using one of the most advanced software, the same being used in Dubai's Atlantis opening. wala jud katunga ang Fireworks Competition sa SM Northwing. actually, disappointed ko sa Fireworks competition the other night. you need to wait more than 10 minutes just to witness a 3-minute fireworks. it's a good thing Pyroworks did a demo after that, the Sinulog beat fireworks i thought is really cool. :okay:
i'm anxious to know how much Sinulog Festival poured in to the Cebu economy. 'til next time!
rustyboi January 18th, 2009, 07:16 PM there was unusually heavy flow of traffic in mandaue mactan bridge. for the past few days, even past midnight the traffic still builds up in Mactan bridge. daghan lang jud mga taga opon namista sa cebu city? but i do notice nga sa-una, traffic settles down in Mactan bridge at around 8pm. recently, ingon sila maski 10pm, mu hinay lang gihapon ang flow dihang dapita. every night jud, not only on weekends.
who was the emcee of last night's event at the grand stand? he said something like: CEBU, the QUEEN CITY OF THE PHILIPPINES. and it's not the first time. i heard that as well when watching a TV coverage of SEA Games opening in Cebu, i think? pero sakto man sad.
Manila, Capital city of the Philippines
Cebu, Queen city of the Philippines
who wants to be the King city of the Philippines? dali, first come first serve.

habagatcentral1 January 19th, 2009, 01:00 AM Miracle, my friend called yesterday from Cebu....the miracle there is, he called...looks like Globe, Smart and Sun has anticipated the very heavy communication flows of the past Sinulog Fests and may have upgraded their systems so that it could accommodate more...
Will be expecting a flood of Sinulog pictures within this week...
Again, congratulations for those who won and Viva Pit Senyor!

dongRoy January 19th, 2009, 02:51 AM Usa ra dyud akong ma-ikasulti... AMAZING!.... aw, duha-on nalang nako... SPECTACULAR!
Really great performances from so many contingents. Great performances from first time out-of-town contingents! I think it was a very good tourism promotion. With Cebu being the top tourism destination in the country and with the SINULOG as the grandest festival celebration in the Philippines, the presence of so many out-of-town contingents was a great way of promoting the rest of the beautiful cities in the Philippines.
Contingents from Leyte, Samar, Lanao del Norte, Tangub City and many more made spectacular performances with their beautiful and very colorful costumes. The strategy of placing the out-of-town contingents at the tail end of the parade enhanced their performances with a burst of colors as their costumes glared under the spot lights.
All congratulations to the Sinulog Foundation Inc. for a jaw dropping, tear breaking grand finale! Even with the challenges it has faced during the past year, with the issues from the COA circular and the noises from detractors and critics alike, the Cebuano people has once again rose to the occasion and continually broke all odds which turned the Grandest Philippine Festival even "Grander".... "Granderest" na siya! hehehe
leylander January 19th, 2009, 02:55 AM grabeha sa tawo this year.
I made a terrible, terrible mistake of deciding to have lunch in EMall. I think I had six near-death experiences. LOL.
2. Dinuutay sa pagsulod sa Emall. Naay nayatakan dayon naay nasamad tungod sa steel bars sa may entrance. Gabawd-bawd ang mga taw.
3. Walk from Emall to Sto. Rosario. Kani ang pinakagrabe. Diri na ko murag kahilakon nga kakuyapon. LOL. Naay natumban.
4. On my way back to Fuente I didn't know grabe ang effort sa paglabang lang from Santo Rosario to Bangko Central. LOL. Naay mom sa akong kilid nga nagdala ug baby and a 2-yo kid. Nihangyo lang siya nga ako sa gunit sa iyang 2-yo kay mapiit man gyud kung dili to kuyugan tungod sa duot2x.
Since opposite man akong direction, mura kog nisugat sa bul-ug. LOL. Giahak kaayo. Natumban akong tiil dayon napiit akong camera.
5. Final leg na gyud sa akong adventure. Ang pangutana, unsaon pag labang from Robinsons padulong sa Fuente? I think it took me almost two hours to do that. Wala gyuy kalutsan. When I was about to give up, naay foreigner with a Photog's ID nga nilabang from Robi to Fuente. Nagpabaga na lang gyud ko, akong gisulob akong camera dayon I followed the foreigner hoping that they'd think that I'm with him. Nyahahaha.
jameslab8470 January 19th, 2009, 03:04 AM @leylander...
Almost pareho ta. I also experienced some of those things last year.

Sinjin P. January 19th, 2009, 03:37 AM I survived my first Sinulog Festival. Just got home after all the revelry. :)
sayang.. i wasn't able to see the fireworks competition. first pa man unta. hahaiizz. This is a stepping stone to a more spectacular and grander fireworks show with almost equal in scale with the pyro olympics in Pasay. :)
Sayang, you could have joined us sa roofdeck. Free entrance mi. Anyway, katong tanan experiment pa to kay 1st pa man, next year kay mas bongga na ug mas daghan na ug participants. Same sad sa Exclusive Grand Street Party. :)

bOrN2BwILd January 19th, 2009, 03:46 AM Tangub regains title, newbie wins
Rene H. Martel
Sun.Star Staff Reporter
THE 2009 Sinulog grand parade became a first-time participant’s triumph and another contingent’s chance to regain what it lost.
Tangub City, Misamis Occidental’s Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe promised to bounce back after failing to capture its fourth straight Sinulog-based crown last year.
Yesterday, it did not only take the grand prize in the category, it also copped its fourth consecutive street dancing competition’s top prize for a total reward of P1 million.
It bested 14 other contingents, including last year’s grand prize winner Siloy sa Alcoy, which settled for fourth place honors this year.
Sinanduloy’s performance started with bancas “exiting” from under the arch of a stone bridge, followed by a market day scene with makeshift structures with thatched roofs serving as fish vendors’ stalls.
A bigger motorized banca bearing the image of the Sto. Niño then came next, simulating a fluvial parade where the dancers on the “beach” acted as devotees cheering the Holy Child.
With the male dancers garbed in the traditional barong and the female dancers wearing white Filipiniana dresses accentuated with flower decorations, Sinanduloy danced the Sinulog steps.
“We never did this kind of concept before. The floral offering, and making use of the costumers as one of the props, but they paid off,” said Tangub City Mayor Jennifer Wee Tan.
The female dancers wore multiple skirts of different colors and at one time showed the other colors to create a mosaic of the Sto. Niño image.
“We wanted to send a message that this is the kulturang Sugboanon. Balik-lantaw ba, through the stricter form of the Sinulog dance,” Tan said.
Josefina Guillen, board of judges chairperson of the Sinulog-based category contest, said Sinanduloy rendered a “refreshing” kind of presentation.
“It was not the usual production. If you look at the contingents, there is a sort of uniformity. But Sinanduloy showed something new, and when there is something new it always excites the audience,” she said.
Guillen is the president of the Philippine Folk Dance Society and director for dance of the performing arts department of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
But, she said, Sinanduloy also did very well in other aspects of their production, including the appropriate use of costumes, mastery of steps and overall choreography.
She said that though it was a close fight, Tangub stood above Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. Memorial National High School (NHS), which settled for second place, in terms of musicality and projection.
In the Free Interpretation (FI) category, Tribu Buyoganon of Abuyog, Leyte got the grand prize, frustrating defending champion Lumad Basakanon, which took second
honors, and last year’s second place winner Municipality of Carmen, which took third place this year.
Buyoganon’s presentation started with dancers as “bees” in a beehive that two boys hit with a slingshot.
The bees went after the boys, one of whom got stung several times and was lying unconscious and twitching on the ground before he was healed through the intercession of the Holy Child.
The contingent used a thick forest and the blazing yellow and red colors of a sunset as backdrop, five-petal flowers that showed the face of the Sto. Niño when flipped, and twirling violet flowers that wowed the applauding crowd.
Buyoganon’s costume and hand props were predominantly orange in color, which even include the party poppers that spewed out orange-colored confetti.
Cultural Center of the Philippines President Nestor Jardin, FI category board of judges chairman, said they found Buyoganon’s presentation “exciting and engaging.”
“We felt like we were there with the contingent because of the scene interpretation and choreography. Unlike the others where we just sit back and wait for them to finish,” he said.
He said they were “looking for something more” from second place winner and defending champion Lumad Basakanon of Barangay Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City, which they did not see.
Jardin said that while nothing can beat Basak’s precision and performance, it failed to make a more refreshing presentation, as it got restricted by its style.
Lanao del Norte (fourth place) and Karatong Festival of Dulag, Leyte (fifth place) completed the FI category winners; while Silaw Culture and Arts of Carcar City NHS (third place) and Pakol Festival of Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental (fifth place) joined the winners’ circle in the Sinulog-based category.
Aside from trophies, first place winners (both SB and FI) will receive P500,000 each; second placers, P400,000; third, P300,000; fourth, P200,000 and fifth, P100,000.
Choreographers of winning contingents get P30,000 (first); P20,000 (second); P15,000 (third); P10,000, fourth; and P5,000 (fifth).
The best in street dancing gets P500,000 (first); P300,000 (second) and P100,000 (third).
All winners will be formally recognized during the awarding ceremony and repeat performance at the Cebu City Sports Center at 1 p.m. today.
Tickets, sold at P50 each, are available at the gate.

hans boy January 19th, 2009, 04:36 AM Waaaah! Grabe! Kaayo!
I have all the videos of the fireworks display for the Sinulog 2009.
7 fireworks display videos from the 1st ever SM City Cebu Fireworks Festival, including the Pyroworks Demo.
1 fireworks display video from the Grand Finale in Cebu City Sports Center.
1 fireworks display video from Ayala Center Cebu.
1 fireworks display video from Crown Regency Hotel and Towers.
My problem is I can't download it in YouTube. My PC has been downloading the first video for almost an hour already but nothing happens. So, I forget about uploading it. Thanks to LordCarnal for uploading it here for the rest of the country and the world to see.
Anyway, I thought Opon(LapuLapu City) and Bulacan are sure winners of the 1st ever SM City Cebu Fireworks Festival. But Opon's fireworks display was a crap and cheap. It's a shame to the Cebuanos who expected a good show from them. However, Bulacan's fireworks display was good but it wasn't good enough to beat the guys from Dumaguete, Bohol and Manila. I think that it was not about the place, Opon or Bulacan. I think that it is about the minds behind the fireworks display.
@leylander, your experience is everybody's experience every Sinulog. My group and I were in a convoy of beautiful and sexy ladies from an international school (I can tell from their looks that they are either from CIS or CIE). The convoy was heading from Baseline to One Mango Avenue, we crossed the street of Mango Avenue and damn people bumped into these whew devils wears Prada ladies and they don't even complaint like you and the rest of the people who party with Cebu for the Sinulog 2009. I really love the thought of it. Sen. Pangilinan and Revilla together with their respective bodyguards did not even complaint that people bumped into them as if they are not VIP's.
Congrats to Cebu and to the Cebuanos.

dongRoy January 19th, 2009, 04:59 AM Congrats! to the City Government for a very successful Celebration. Mura'g makita nato sa size sa Sinulog this year nga mabusy na jud ni'g maayo silang Sir Paul in anticipation sa continuous growth of Cebu. This year's celebration is a testimony that Cebu will never be the same ever again! We can anticipate more influx of tourist and the tourism industry booming; more investments coming in (karemember lang ko sa streamer atong usa ka contingent: SINULOG MAKES CEBU GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE) with all the city sisterhood that Cebu has all over the world as, also being recognized in the celebration; and more and more people from all over the Visayas and Mindanao coming to Cebu to seek job opportunities, population density in Cebu would exponentially increase over the years.
This rapid change would definitely call for smart planning, management and inter-agency cooperation. It is my hope that all LGUs in Cebu would come together and work together for the benefit of the Cebuano people who so richly deserves it.

Pangilinan and Sen. Revilla.
Daghan sang mga officials gipang special mention including some city officials sa usa ka city sa Korea nga sister city sa Cebu who were present in the Celebrations. Some city officials of the out-of-town contingents played roles in their cities' performances.

i was at the YELLOW TICKET designated area. i arrived at the grand stand around 2PM na, and i was really mad when the security guard didn't allow me to climb up the stairs because the yellow area is already full. i explained to him the reason we bought the tickets to secure a place for us anytime of the day. he said they can't do anything daw kay puno na lagi ang lugar. i was supposed to speak with the "GENERAL MANAGER" to demand a valid explanation as to why even those who bought tickets can't be accommodated. i was instead referred to the sort of the "chief police" of the event. thanks to my convincing powers, i was allowed to climb up at grand stand with the assurance that i will reach the topmost area so as not to block the other viewers. i was thankful and glad to be offered an extra space by some spectators somewhere in the middle. swertehan pa ko!

mAiNsTrEaMhunter January 19th, 2009, 08:18 AM grabeha sa tawo this year.
Nyahahaha.
bai @leylander, nagkatawa gyud ko sa imong mga asoy, and i can't agree more.
LOL. naay uban while hawan pa ang road, mag gukdanay mag dagan2x. weird kaayo. LOL.
makalagot sad usahay...:lol::lol:
I survived my first Sinulog Festival. Just got home after all the revelry. :)

Sinulog, the best festival in Asia according to a Korean from Yeosu City

ABOUT 2.1 million people watched the Sinulog 2009 grand parade in the Cebu City Sports Center grandstand and along the 5.1-kilometer parade route, police said.
Given the size of the crowd, they were relieved there were no reported cases of shooting, stabbing, mauling or gang violence that marred the 10-hour parade.
And with so much color, pageantry and spectacular performances of 44 dancing contingents, the parade surprised and impressed first-time and regular visitors alike.
“It was very beautiful, it has exceeded my wildest dreams. Sinulog has really improved so much. After the first Sinulog in 1980, we never expected that something like this would happen to the Sinulog,” said former customs collector David Odilao Jr., who first organized the annual festivity.
Except for some fake tickets being sold outside the Cebu City Sports Center, a few reports on drunkenness and a reveler carrying a scalpel, no other incident spoiled the parade.
Acting Mayor Michael Rama said that Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s message, delivered live from Houston, Texas, was a treat for the thousands of revelers at the sports center.
“Everything turned out very good, all the activities were very pleasing and I think it was very good that the people have finally heard from the mayor. I’m happy that he communicated and gave a message because a lot of people have been wanting to see him,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.
Among those who joined the festivities at the sports center grandstand yesterday were officials from the International Police, investors, businessmen, politicians and delegations of Cebu City’s sister-cities from Chula Vista in California, Las Vegas in Nevada, Yeosu City in Korea, Australia and Canada.
Fire dancers
Ki-Ju Park of the Yeosu Global Charity Association said he did not mind the long walk to get to the sports center, saying he enjoyed what he thinks is the best festival in Asia.
“All the dancing from morning to evening is very, very interesting, I think it’s the best festival in Asia. I woke up very early in the morning and had to walk a long distance but I’m not tired, I’m enjoying this very much,” said Park, who is visiting Cebu for the first time to watch the Sinulog with 10 Yeosu City officials.
He was especially impressed with the Polynesian-inspired grand finale dance number, which featured some 300 Hawaiian dancers clad in grass skirts, leis and headdresses. The dancers included Miss Earth 2009 Karla Paul Henry, television personality Cutie del Mar, Eleanor Hayco and Rica Alix of the Cebu City Dancesport Team and the wives of some city councilors.
Fire dancers also contributed to the Polynesian Festival dance number, which ended with a fireworks display.
Although he was impressed by the performances, Odilao said the organizers should have more contingents in the Sinulog-based category in order to preserve the true meaning and origins of the Sinulog.
“In the first place, Sinulog is supposed to be a dance of veneration in honor of the Sto. Niño. There are so many participants now but they are in the free interpretation category. There should be more Sinulog-based contingents so we can preserve the origin of the Sinulog,” Odilao told Sun.Star Cebu. (LCR/RHM/MEA/JST)

Sinulog '09 winners receive their prizes
Sun-Star Online
Updated January 20, 2009 12:00 AM
Happy bees of Tribu Buyoganon of Abuyog, Leyte, do an encore of the performance that won them first place in the free interpretation category of the Sinulog Festival. JOY TORREJOS
CEBU - Winners of the 2009 Sinulog Grand Parade received their prizes yesterday with the contingents from outside Cebu amassing close to P2 million.
The Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe of Tangub City was the biggest winner taking home P1 million for being adjudged as the best in the Sinulog-based category and placing first in the street dancing competition.
The winners’ check was received by Tangub City Mayor Jennifer Wee Tan, who was Miss Cebu in 1986.
Tan said, she is relieved that their sacrifices and perseverance paid off.
“I’m very glad that it is over, with or without the prize, we are doing this for our devotion to the Sto.Niño,” Tan said.
She said she doesn’t want to mention whether the amount received is enough to defray their expenses as she doesn’t want to put a price on their veneration of the Sto. Niño.
Tangub’s choreographer, Emilio Pascual, received P30,000 while their lead dancer, 15-year-old Iris Linganay also got P30,000 for being chosen as the Festival Queen. Tribu Buyoganon of Abuyog, Leyte, a first time participant, received P500,000 for being the grand champion of the Free Interpretation category. Their choreographer Victor Cuenco also received P30,000.
Lanao del Norte’s “Land of Beauty and Bounty” contingent, a first timer, received P150,000 for being the 4th placer in the Free Interpretation category.
Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental’s “Pakol Festival” and Dulag, Leyte’s “Kuratong Festival” both bagged fifth place in the Sinulog-Based and Free Interpretation categories, respectively.
Each contingent received P100,000.
Their choreographers received P5,000 each.
Acting Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, in his opening speech, thanked all the out of town contingents for making the event more colorful and hoped they will continue to do so in the coming years.
“Mamalik pa unta ni sila madaog man o mapildi para kang Sr. Sto. Niño,” Rama said.
According to the majority of the officials and choreographers, they will try their best to participate in next year’s Sinulog, which will be the 30th staging of the annual celebration.
This early, several contingents from outside Cebu have already expressed interest to be back next year even if they did not win.
Among the Cebu bets, “Lumad Basakanon” of barangay Basak-San Nicolas bagged a total of P600,000 for being second in the Free Interpretation category and first in street dancing.
The check was received by barangay captain George Rama.

speaking of passes, i remember Sinulog 2007 when i didn't need one except this little 'native' necklace with a mango pendant that was probably given to balikbayans arriving in the airport...well anyway, on friday night it got me into the night mardi gras--as in i got through the guards and landed in a seat near the front row--on saturday, i dressed up like an ROTC cadet (on purpose) and had the necklace as an accessory, then voila! i got across the cordon without any effort and got to within literally an arm's lenght of the carozza...
that mango-shaped pendant could be my lucky charm...OR it could be Divine Intervention doing me a huge favor
