Weak amihan prevailing here in Luzon. Sunny and mild warmth na..unlike previous days.
Low Pressure Area and tail end of cold front going away out of Visayas...naa weather improvement pod karon..
It's still a bit cold at night but it is starting to get humid in the morning ti'l afternoon.

dongRoy January 19th, 2009, 04:59 AM Congrats! to the City Government for a very successful Celebration. Mura'g makita nato sa size sa Sinulog this year nga mabusy na jud ni'g maayo silang Sir Paul in anticipation sa continuous growth of Cebu. This year's celebration is a testimony that Cebu will never be the same ever again! We can anticipate more influx of tourist and the tourism industry booming; more investments coming in (karemember lang ko sa streamer atong usa ka contingent: SINULOG MAKES CEBU GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE) with all the city sisterhood that Cebu has all over the world as, also being recognized in the celebration; and more and more people from all over the Visayas and Mindanao coming to Cebu to seek job opportunities, population density in Cebu would exponentially increase over the years.
This rapid change would definitely call for smart planning, management and inter-agency cooperation. It is my hope that all LGUs in Cebu would come together and work together for the benefit of the Cebuano people who so richly deserves it.

Sinjin P. January 19th, 2009, 05:04 AM Anyway, I thought Opon(LapuLapu City) and Bulacan are sure winners of the 1st ever SM City Cebu Fireworks Festival. But Opon's fireworks display was a crap and cheap. It's a shame to the Cebuanos who expected a good show from them. However, Bulacan's fireworks display was good but it wasn't good enough to beat the guys from Dumaguete, Bohol and Manila. I think that it was not about the place, Opon or Bulacan. I think that it is about the minds behind the fireworks display.

Maayo kaayo iyang execution and ofcourse, the gown, grabe ka garbo! Pwede na pang Festival Queen. :D
dongRoy January 19th, 2009, 05:29 AM By the way, I heard nga gi-boo-han si Joey de Venecia sa CCSC gahapon?
Yup, giboohan dyud! Ngano bitawng nagpaannounce. Pangilinan and Sen. Revilla.
Daghan sang mga officials gipang special mention including some city officials sa usa ka city sa Korea nga sister city sa Cebu who were present in the Celebrations. Some city officials of the out-of-town contingents played roles in their cities' performances.

Politicians will really seize the opportunity in going to festivals...a big time to build rapport and campaigning.
But its a good thing they keep their mouth shut while they are in Sinulog...mao na akong gibantayan kahapon sa live streaming especially when JDVIII was there...
I hope Sinulog and the rest of the fiestas in the country should have space in the national TV coverage, bisan sa NBN unta...This is a landmark in Philippine culture and should not be taken for granted by the national media.
i was at the YELLOW TICKET designated area. i arrived at the grand stand around 2PM na, and i was really mad when the security guard didn't allow me to climb up the stairs because the yellow area is already full. i explained to him the reason we bought the tickets to secure a place for us anytime of the day. he said they can't do anything daw kay puno na lagi ang lugar. i was supposed to speak with the "GENERAL MANAGER" to demand a valid explanation as to why even those who bought tickets can't be accommodated. i was instead referred to the sort of the "chief police" of the event. thanks to my convincing powers, i was allowed to climb up at grand stand with the assurance that i will reach the topmost area so as not to block the other viewers. i was thankful and glad to be offered an extra space by some spectators somewhere in the middle. swertehan pa ko!

mAiNsTrEaMhunter January 19th, 2009, 08:18 AM grabeha sa tawo this year.
I made a terrible, terrible mistake of deciding to have lunch in EMall. I think I had six near-death experiences. LOL.
2. Dinuutay sa pagsulod sa Emall. Naay nayatakan dayon naay nasamad tungod sa steel bars sa may entrance. Gabawd-bawd ang mga taw.
3. Walk from Emall to Sto. Rosario. Kani ang pinakagrabe. Diri na ko murag kahilakon nga kakuyapon. LOL. Naay natumban.
4. On my way back to Fuente I didn't know grabe ang effort sa paglabang lang from Santo Rosario to Bangko Central. LOL. Naay mom sa akong kilid nga nagdala ug baby and a 2-yo kid. Nihangyo lang siya nga ako sa gunit sa iyang 2-yo kay mapiit man gyud kung dili to kuyugan tungod sa duot2x.
Since opposite man akong direction, mura kog nisugat sa bul-ug. LOL. Giahak kaayo. Natumban akong tiil dayon napiit akong camera.
5. Final leg na gyud sa akong adventure. Ang pangutana, unsaon pag labang from Robinsons padulong sa Fuente? I think it took me almost two hours to do that. Wala gyuy kalutsan. When I was about to give up, naay foreigner with a Photog's ID nga nilabang from Robi to Fuente. Nagpabaga na lang gyud ko, akong gisulob akong camera dayon I followed the foreigner hoping that they'd think that I'm with him. Nyahahaha.
bai @leylander, nagkatawa gyud ko sa imong mga asoy, and i can't agree more.
LOL. naay uban while hawan pa ang road, mag gukdanay mag dagan2x. weird kaayo. LOL.
makalagot sad usahay...:lol::lol:
I survived my first Sinulog Festival. Just got home after all the revelry. :)
me too, a certified Sinulog survivor!:laugh:

Sinulog, the best festival in Asia according to a Korean from Yeosu City

ABOUT 2.1 million people watched the Sinulog 2009 grand parade in the Cebu City Sports Center grandstand and along the 5.1-kilometer parade route, police said.
Given the size of the crowd, they were relieved there were no reported cases of shooting, stabbing, mauling or gang violence that marred the 10-hour parade.
And with so much color, pageantry and spectacular performances of 44 dancing contingents, the parade surprised and impressed first-time and regular visitors alike.
“It was very beautiful, it has exceeded my wildest dreams. Sinulog has really improved so much. After the first Sinulog in 1980, we never expected that something like this would happen to the Sinulog,” said former customs collector David Odilao Jr., who first organized the annual festivity.
Except for some fake tickets being sold outside the Cebu City Sports Center, a few reports on drunkenness and a reveler carrying a scalpel, no other incident spoiled the parade.
Acting Mayor Michael Rama said that Mayor Tomas Osmeńa’s message, delivered live from Houston, Texas, was a treat for the thousands of revelers at the sports center.
“Everything turned out very good, all the activities were very pleasing and I think it was very good that the people have finally heard from the mayor. I’m happy that he communicated and gave a message because a lot of people have been wanting to see him,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.
Among those who joined the festivities at the sports center grandstand yesterday were officials from the International Police, investors, businessmen, politicians and delegations of Cebu City’s sister-cities from Chula Vista in California, Las Vegas in Nevada, Yeosu City in Korea, Australia and Canada.
Fire dancers
Ki-Ju Park of the Yeosu Global Charity Association said he did not mind the long walk to get to the sports center, saying he enjoyed what he thinks is the best festival in Asia.
“All the dancing from morning to evening is very, very interesting, I think it’s the best festival in Asia. I woke up very early in the morning and had to walk a long distance but I’m not tired, I’m enjoying this very much,” said Park, who is visiting Cebu for the first time to watch the Sinulog with 10 Yeosu City officials.
He was especially impressed with the Polynesian-inspired grand finale dance number, which featured some 300 Hawaiian dancers clad in grass skirts, leis and headdresses. The dancers included Miss Earth 2009 Karla Paul Henry, television personality Cutie del Mar, Eleanor Hayco and Rica Alix of the Cebu City Dancesport Team and the wives of some city councilors.
Fire dancers also contributed to the Polynesian Festival dance number, which ended with a fireworks display.
Although he was impressed by the performances, Odilao said the organizers should have more contingents in the Sinulog-based category in order to preserve the true meaning and origins of the Sinulog.
“In the first place, Sinulog is supposed to be a dance of veneration in honor of the Sto. Nińo. There are so many participants now but they are in the free interpretation category. There should be more Sinulog-based contingents so we can preserve the origin of the Sinulog,” Odilao told Sun.Star Cebu. (LCR/RHM/MEA/JST)

leylander January 19th, 2009, 05:29 PM By the way, ngutana ko if there is "Best in Music" award sa Sinulog competition?
but naa may best in musicality sa festival queen. and i think naa pud sa elimination rounds (sinulog sa kabataan). so im sure naa pud na sa actual sinulog gyud.
kinsa tong nakaadto, pls confirm. hehe
diehardbisdak January 19th, 2009, 06:21 PM ^^ Best in Musicality is the contingent from Carmen, Cebu which also bagged the 3rd spot in the Free Interpretation Category (P200,000) and P50,000 for Best in Musicality...

CEBU - Winners of the 2009 Sinulog Grand Parade received their prizes yesterday with the contingents from outside Cebu amassing close to P2 million.
The Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe of Tangub City was the biggest winner taking home P1 million for being adjudged as the best in the Sinulog-based category and placing first in the street dancing competition.
The winners’ check was received by Tangub City Mayor Jennifer Wee Tan, who was Miss Cebu in 1986.
Tan said, she is relieved that their sacrifices and perseverance paid off.
“I’m very glad that it is over, with or without the prize, we are doing this for our devotion to the Sto.Nińo,” Tan said.
She said she doesn’t want to mention whether the amount received is enough to defray their expenses as she doesn’t want to put a price on their veneration of the Sto. Nińo.
Tangub’s choreographer, Emilio Pascual, received P30,000 while their lead dancer, 15-year-old Iris Linganay also got P30,000 for being chosen as the Festival Queen. Tribu Buyoganon of Abuyog, Leyte, a first time participant, received P500,000 for being the grand champion of the Free Interpretation category. Their choreographer Victor Cuenco also received P30,000.
Lanao del Norte’s “Land of Beauty and Bounty” contingent, a first timer, received P150,000 for being the 4th placer in the Free Interpretation category.
Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental’s “Pakol Festival” and Dulag, Leyte’s “Kuratong Festival” both bagged fifth place in the Sinulog-Based and Free Interpretation categories, respectively.
Each contingent received P100,000.
Their choreographers received P5,000 each.
Acting Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, in his opening speech, thanked all the out of town contingents for making the event more colorful and hoped they will continue to do so in the coming years.
“Mamalik pa unta ni sila madaog man o mapildi para kang Sr. Sto. Nińo,” Rama said.
According to the majority of the officials and choreographers, they will try their best to participate in next year’s Sinulog, which will be the 30th staging of the annual celebration.
This early, several contingents from outside Cebu have already expressed interest to be back next year even if they did not win.
Among the Cebu bets, “Lumad Basakanon” of barangay Basak-San Nicolas bagged a total of P600,000 for being second in the Free Interpretation category and first in street dancing.
The check was received by barangay captain George Rama.
Carmen Mayor Sonia Pua received the plaque and P200,000 check for their contingent’s winning third place in the Free Interpretation class.
Carmen also received another P50,000 for winning as Best in Musicality.
Choreographer Angelo Manapsal received P15,000 for helping Carmen win. This was on top of the P20,000 he received for being the choreographer of Don Sergio Osmeńa Sr. Memorial National High School, which finished second in the Sinulog-based category.
Don Sergio received P300,000 cash and plaque and another P100,000 for being adjudged as the Best in Costume. Carcar officials led by Vice Mayor Nicepuro Apura received the P200,000 for the Silaw Culture and Arts contingent winning the third prize.
Alcoy Mayor Antonio Plando received the fourth place award bagged by the “Siloy Festival” contingent. The winners of the Floats, Higantes and Puppeteers were also given their prizes. —

speaking of passes, i remember Sinulog 2007 when i didn't need one except this little 'native' necklace with a mango pendant that was probably given to balikbayans arriving in the airport...well anyway, on friday night it got me into the night mardi gras--as in i got through the guards and landed in a seat near the front row--on saturday, i dressed up like an ROTC cadet (on purpose) and had the necklace as an accessory, then voila! i got across the cordon without any effort and got to within literally an arm's lenght of the carozza...
that mango-shaped pendant could be my lucky charm...OR it could be Divine Intervention doing me a huge favor

dongRoy January 20th, 2009, 03:56 AM ^^anything that is not in the capital, no matter how large it is, is insignificant for these companies. The large broadcasting companies such as GMA and ABSCBN are based in Manila hence, for them, the Philippine territory is only within Metro Manila.

I heard that there was no tv coverage in Manila during Sinulog...that was so sad....they missed the grandest festival of the country. :)
What about the gov't controlled TV stations? You just cannot blame the private TV stations since these are for commercial use. Your DOT Cebu should have coordinated with these gov't TV stations for the airing of Sinulog.
GMA and ABS showed Sinulog only as part of their primetime news.
dongRoy January 20th, 2009, 04:13 AM ^^Some of the event details of the Sinulog was actually done by the DOT Secretary himself (who is a cebuano, by the way). Don't you think that would be kind of odd if the DOT Secretary played a big part of the celebration and no coverage was done by NBN?
I don't think it is a question of whether or not DOT Cebu made the effort to coordinate; it is a question of what is and what is not significant in this country as being dictated by the capital.
Airtime means money. And having airtime for the Sinulog Celebration would cost money. Perhaps the National government doesn't think that these Celebrations in our country, or outside Metro Manila for that matter are worth spending money over. They'd rather spend all that money to promote and broadcast the president as an icon rather than spending it on what they think is just one big party.
RonnieR January 20th, 2009, 04:37 AM ^^ Speaking of Sec. Durano, it would have been easier to broadcast the Sinulog since this festival is in Cebu and he is a Cebuano...airing them in IBC, RPN and NBN won't be a problem but unfortunately, it was NOT done. Where is his clout????
mAiNsTrEaMhunter January 20th, 2009, 04:38 AM well my take on this is for cebu to have a national media outfit so that other parts of the country can also see cebu and the nation 24/7.

SleMarKen January 20th, 2009, 04:46 AM and this is another reason why people in Manlila cannot blame people in the south specially Cebuanos of hating Manila in some reasons...

But for me, it's ok... it is not important to broadcast Sinulog in the capital. It's not a minus factor for Sinulog but for the people in NCR and in other parts of the country who did not witness this great festival.
what is important is it was shown in the whole wide world anyway.

2006 and 2007 Sinulog (I dunno last year) was aired in NBN from start to finish. The City government paid NBN for the airtime.

i certainly agree with you @ mainstreamhunter.. actually there is the CCTN which covers the Sinulog.. its just that it is not in National Scope. I also remember that during the presidency of Cerge Remonde of the RPN, there was a National coverage of the Sinulog nationwide.. i just can remember what year.

Yes, yan talaga ang mangyayari. And the fact that this cultural festival (which is the start of CHristianization of the Filipinos - means a very significant cultural event in our country) isn't given importance by our National Government and of major TV stations in our country which is in Manila (I did not say Manileńos).
And we are not complaining dahil dapat lang talaga.
And we are talking here if the willingness of these TV stations to help promote our own culture.

I can see media needs to review its take on TRUE filipino culture. I've observed that when there are big events in Manila, media portrays it as "national" and even pop stars from hollywood, naa gyud media exposure throughout the country and ma-tag nalang pud na National Event! :bash: And pag mga festivals from other cities and provinces ang icelebrate, they'd just give updates on their primetime news reports of what's really happening! Its like Media should be blame for Manila's alienation of the Philippines! I'm seeing that Media is taking Manila away from the Philippines!:bash:

dongRoy January 20th, 2009, 05:38 AM Ganito nalang... All of us are really just speculating here and since this is an online forum, we have this tendency of going off course in our arguments...
The reality of it is, IT IS NOT REALLY IMPORTANT if whether or not the Sinulog Celebrations would have media coverage. The Sinulog is a prayer, a prayer in the form of a grand celebration held in Cebu by the Cebuanos and everyone else who has the devotion to the child Jesus. WHAT IS IMPORTANT is that those of us, who have love in our hearts, take part in the grandest prayer we could possibly offer.
It's just that, sometimes, we think that the Sinulog is just another Festival, just another party, just another event for exposure, but its not. It is a celebration that is so intimate, so powerful, that those who take part of it can't help but be overjoyed, be excited and with all the air in their lungs, would be able to shout VIVA PIT SENYOR!!! and that everyone else can't help but hear such powerful chant that it becomes so hard to turn away from it.
Media exposure is not really important for the Sinulog Celebrations. The Sinulog would not stop anyway if the media would not cover it. On the other hand, it is, however the responsibility of the media to cover any event, good or bad as simply a part of their service to provide information. Hence, it is their decision to cover any event or not. As for the Sinulog Celebrations, it is neither the task of the SFI nor the DOT to invite media exposure. Besides, would you really need to force media to cover 2.1Million People praying at the same time?
and BTW, we are not complaining. we are simply stating a fact.

You know what the Department of Tourism did? They invited so many contingents from all over the country to showcase their own City in the Sinulog Celebration.
Since Cebu is the top tourist destination in the country today, the Sinulog was the perfect opportunity for the rest of the Cities in the Philippines to gain exposure. During the Sinulog celebrations, LGU representatives from other cities were able to announce invitations to come and visit their own Cities and Festivals. The strategy was to expose these less visited Cities in the country's most visited celebration.
Today, you can now anticipate more foreign and domestic tourists alike to visit Festivals in Misamis Occidental, Festivals in Samar and Leyte, Festivals in Lanao del Norte, and many more others who were able to promote their cities during the Sinulog Celebrations.
mwg12a January 20th, 2009, 06:14 AM ^^^ Grabeha man, just cuz sinulog wasn't aired nationally, federalism would be the ultimate resolution. When we have federalism, it doesn't mean Cebu or other parts of the Philippines would act as it is a separate country, it doesn't work that way... it doesn't mean every regions would be treated equally, some would still lag behind. Some would flourish some would lag behind, much like what is happenning right now... Cebu is flourishing with infrastructure and such. The establishments of foreign investors and corporation would still depends upon them and not up to any Philippine government is all four angles of the region and society. The only difference is that the local government would have a better access to funding but most of it would still be going to the national capital region, just as any government in the world, just like how federalism works in the US.
See how Cebu is enjoying all the benefits of these on it's own, something other parts of the Philippines does not have yet.
diehardbisdak January 20th, 2009, 06:24 AM ...daghan ng cable companies around the country are including Cebu-based CCTN Channel in their programming...and CCTN was broadcasting Sinulog LIVE...kaso nga lang, dili tanang pinoy na-aay cable sa balay...heheheh!

I must agree. I found the media coverage of Quiapo fiesta as "too much"....what will you see? only the barefoot men, jostling each other to touch the statue...unlike the one in Sinulog: colorful, coordinated dances, fiesta like atmosphere, millions of people as well...and more tourists, definitely.
So, there is Cerge Remonde in Arroyo's cabinet a Cebuano too, What did he do to have this festival aired in national TV? particularly in 3 gov't owned TV stations?

dongRoy January 20th, 2009, 06:50 AM This is a commendable act, but why didn't DOT convince the 3 gov't controlled stations to air the Sinulog? Why???? even in one station? I think that's not too much for a favor to air the biggest festival of the country.
Well, I believe all these would just boil down to one answer--Money. If I may go a bit off track, as was mentioned before, in 2006 or 2007, a national broadcasting company did air the celebration but the City government of Cebu paid for the airtime. Over the past few months, before the celebrations, a COA circular was released that no LGU would fund any NGO if an officer of that NGO is an official of the LGU. This is actually one of the challenges the SFI faced for this year's celebration. Now, under that premise, all funds available, mostly contributions from the private sector were prioritized for the celebration itself. I may just be speculating but maybe that is why the city government or SFI weren't able to purchase airtime. Again, in this premise, coverage for the celebration were "traditionally" bought by the agency concerned, in this case the SFI or in the case of the past, the Cebu City Government.
While it is true that the Sinulog is DOT accredited, it is not within the scope of the DOT hence not eligible to gain major funding from such national agency. Again, I may just be speculating here but if there is such funding available from the DOT, such funding may have been spent to increase production value of those other cities participating in the event.
Also, if DOT would fund the Sinulog celebration for its airtime for example, that means it would also have to fund the Ati-atihan, the Masskara, the Kadayawan, the Buyogan and all the other festivals in all 7,107 islands. I don't think we have enough funds for that.

mAiNsTrEaMhunter January 20th, 2009, 08:17 AM I must agree. I found the media coverage of Quiapo fiesta as "too much"....what will you see? only the barefoot men, jostling each other to touch the statue...unlike the one in Sinulog: colorful, coordinated dances, fiesta like atmosphere, millions of people as well...and more tourists, definitely.
So, there is Cerge Remonde in Arroyo's cabinet a Cebuano too, What did he do to have this festival aired in national TV? particularly in 3 gov't owned TV stations?
so if this is the case, did Quiapo or Manila perhaps paid ABS-CBN or GMA or NBN to air the feast of the Black Nazarene or even ALIWAN? I maybe speculating but I don't think the City Government of Manila paid these national media outfits to broadcast the festivities from dawn til midnight. How come these major festivals in the Philippines from outside Manila now became a "commercial entity" for these national media outfits? So granting that money is indeed the prime mover on this, I'd like to believe that media favors Manila and the provinces a hell pay for it.

rustyboi January 20th, 2009, 08:38 AM To me it doesn't really matter whether ABS-CBN or GMA doing a coverage of the festival or not. Sinulog is already popular and Cebu's streets during the festival can no longer accommodate more people, samot ko dili ka ginhawa, malunod ko sa mga chicks.
mAiNsTrEaMhunter January 20th, 2009, 08:40 AM ^^^ Grabeha man, just cuz sinulog wasn't aired nationally, federalism would be the ultimate resolution.
See how Cebu is enjoying all the benefits of these on it's own, something other parts of the Philippines does not have yet.
right! let's not bring federalism mga bai... I guess what he meant was for others to have their own exposure in the national arena. I understand because Manila media took the advantage that Tagalog is the national language that's why they have captured the rest of the country. For others like Cebu to create their own "national" TV, they need to broadcast everything in English and not in Cebuano nor should it possibly be Tagalog so that the entire country can understand it too.

I think it's BEST if we imply strict Cebuano and/or English only on broadcast. subtitle nalang ang Tagalog ha. if a TV reporter from our own TV network for example interviews a Tagalog-speaking Philippine native, they should DUB it in Cebuano so we can't hear not a single Tagalog word. :nocrook:

...
the different festivals of our country should be given reasonable national media coverage because anything that will be of help in terms of the promotion our culture will surely work to the benefit of the city/province, that is not to say however that the respective local/regional stations of GMA and ABS-CBN have been remiss in covering these events because they have been more than satisfactory, but then again, a national exposure will pay more dividends and bring in greater advantages

PINOYmeat January 20th, 2009, 11:30 AM Mga maniniyot og mga Sugboanon, palihog basahnon nyo kining article gikan kay Leo Lastimosa...something about media boycotting Sinulog 2010 coverage?
Mao ni ang link:
http://leolasty.multiply.com/journal/item/5684/Arangkada_of_Leo_Lastimosa_for_January_20_2009
for me, bahalag late na akong reaction, this blog is insignificant. i mean, leo lastimosa cannot dictate the flow a national network based in manila much less ang whole media sa cebu. siguro he holds high position in local media organization but i dont think he is powerful enough to influence such kind of move, eh ka swerte sa GMA ug di sila mu uban sa boycot, and i dont think these media outfits are ready to sacrifice millions of sponsorships and advertising revenues just because they sympathize with the move and im 100 % sure that their manila bosses wont allow such moves. isa na ka dakong bato nga idukdok sa ilang mga ulo.
look at the blog, theres no mention of his affiliation with abs cbn gani, no network logo whatsoever, leo lastimosa enjoys popularity just because he is with abs cbn right now. its the network that decides, not the newsman.
habagatcentral1 January 20th, 2009, 12:13 PM I heard that there was no tv coverage in Manila during Sinulog...that was so sad....they missed the grandest festival of the country. :)
What about the gov't controlled TV stations? You just cannot blame the private TV stations since these are for commercial use. Your DOT Cebu should have coordinated with these gov't TV stations for the airing of Sinulog.
GMA and ABS showed Sinulog only as part of their primetime news.
^^Some of the event details of the Sinulog was actually done by the DOT Secretary himself (who is a cebuano, by the way).
^^ Speaking of Sec. Durano, it would have been easier to broadcast the Sinulog since this festival is in Cebu and he is a Cebuano...airing them in IBC, RPN and NBN won't be a problem but unfortunately, it was NOT done. Where is his clout????
well my take on this is for cebu to have a national media outfit so that other parts of the country can also see cebu and the nation 24/7.
Actually, I was frustrated with ABSCBN...I thought they'll gonna give a blow by blow coverage of Sinulog but alas none...only in MagTV that was shown...and guess what, its only an hour unlike last year that has the full coverage in their archives....
Anyway, they have a full blast with Quiapo but why not Sinulog and other festivals outside?
Ako bisag NBN, IBC or RPN CS-9 na lang unta mocover, at least there is an effort of promoting this cultural feast to the Filipinos...no wonder sometimes I doubt the sense of patriotism that the government has today, and instead focus on Obama's inauguration (yes, he is Imperator et Terra Mundi but could we give leeway to the Philippine cultural-ity?)...no wonder Independence Day is like another Independence Day unlike that of US, France's Bastille and Malaysia's Merdeka.

MatudNilaBaby January 20th, 2009, 10:15 PM and FYI lang, I would just like to add this one.
Today, you can now anticipate more foreign and domestic tourists alike to visit Festivals in Misamis Occidental, Festivals in Samar and Leyte, Festivals in Lanao del Norte, and many more others who were able to promote their cities during the Sinulog Celebrations.
mga bai and mga media personnel, stop whining and sour graping. sinulog is always a success no matter what little coverage was done.
btw, have you heard about super bowl, olympic games, the rose parade, rmiss universe/world and other beauty pageants, ? all these big events are contracted to one tv station thats given the right to promote and air the show. in return, the tv station has the right to seek for sponsorship for whatever price they liked. in this day and age, sfi should think along this line to avoid the threat of national media boycott which can be possible. asking the media to come and shoot and yet they are barred from getting too close to the stage is not going to work as they need a nice angle to catch the action. remember television and media is an art form. u may have cameras stationed at the far corner but u need roving cameras as well.
how about the city govt and bigfoot entertainment teaming up and forming a tv station that is purely cebuano broadcast in englisn and cebuano that will compete with the major tv network in the country. the city has its own arts and culture council and a semi public tv can showcase the city's projects for the people of cebu and neighboring islands and maybe the whole country to see.
mwg12a January 20th, 2009, 11:47 PM right! let's not bring federalism mga bai...
Or it can still be in Cebuano but with subtitle and translation in whatever region it is being shown. I guess, english is alright since all filipinos pretty much understand english even if some can't really speak it much (I mean the under priveledged ones)
And even if Sinulog were not given enough media coverage for all the filipinos to see, I know for sure that it's a popular event where majority of the filipinos are aware of. It still a shame that it was not widely covered on TV. I think it's a must...
great184 January 21st, 2009, 03:23 AM Yes that true, I think it was a slap on the face that TV patrol "World" gave more airtime to a smaller celebration in Tondo than Sinulog, or even Ati-atihan. And I wish they replaced ASAP or SOP with a coverage of sinulog, or at least a nationwide celebration of Sto. Nino (showing different locations).
What's the point here? It's that the masses glue themselves to the TV for entertainment.. These guys don't have Sky Cable after all... So it's up to our media to be informative, educational, and lastly- not give the impression that everything revolves around NCR. It would have been great for them to see live TV coverage would be an education in itself, a lecture cultural richness and heritage that is far more entertaining than any noon-time variety show. I guess we can depend on our media on further drumming down the masses to further mediocrity and disillusionment.

rustyboi January 21st, 2009, 05:07 AM actually, GMA 7 (24 Oras) has been giving us substantial updates, about the Sinulog Celebration every night on their primetime news. i dunno during the main event cause I was out on the streets. i dunno pud if ABS-CBN (TV Patrol World) is doing the same. hehe
but i know for a fact that during the time of former Mayor Alvin Garcia, he wanted to advertise Sinulog thru CNN and i have no idea if it was materialized
mga bai and mga media personnel, stop wining and sour graping. sinulog is always a success no matter what little coverage was done.

^^i have to agree on this. Bigfoot has camera "cranes" and rovers similar to those being used in Hollywood. Talbog jud ang gamit sa Local networks. it won't be easy for Bigfoot to setup a National TV network though. putting up a cable tv programming would be great start, since we already have Cebu New Films for the movie industry.

Surigao City participated the other festival na dunagn sa sinulog and fortunately sila ang mi champion for the 4th time i guess. they opted to participate sa kadto nga festival instead in sinulog para maka less sa gasto anyway pariho man Sto.

better still, floats should be designed with sinulog theme. float entries should first be screened and approved as to design. then if showbiz personalities will join, they may be allowed if they wear sinulog-based costumes which blend to the float design they ride in. di pareho karun abi nila'g manila film festival. if i remember right before, alma moreno rode on a float but she was garbed in a costume and she was dancing, too.

giving throwing freebies or samples of condoms or lubes in a huge crowd can cause a commotion or stampede, thus injuring a lot of people and it can be fatal to the unfortunate ones like the small kid nga matumban. they should stop that practice because that's very dangerous to the welfare of the sinulog participants and spectators. if they want to hand out some free samples to promote their product, they can set up a booth in a less crowded or packed area. in that way, youre being proactive in preventive in helping keep the sinulog safe and orderly.

LordCarnal January 22nd, 2009, 10:30 AM It's possible in Cebu Business Park I think or in Asiatown IT Park. Pero in Osmeńa Blvd., there are wires crossing the street man gud.
Hehe.
Anyway, I finally saw the Gaisano Grand Mall of Mactan. It's quite big. There's a spacious atrium. I just hope that the Lapu-Lapu City Gov't. will follow up the widening and improvement of the road there.
Matud pa ni PGMA, she's disappointed because 1st class hotels in Mactan are served by 3rd class roads.

yes, the LGU (Lapu-lapu City Gov't) simply reasons out that it's beyond their jurisdiction daw, maintaining the national roads should have been taken cared by the DPWH. pero dili nalang unta na sila mag salig sa DPWH kay kanang DPWH dili na mu tagad kay nakakwarta na sila sa lamp posts, nang abroad na. :bash::lol:

Capitol yields to city ruling (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=31130062)
Friday, January 23, 2009
Linette C. Ramos Sun.Star Staff Reporter
With Gerome M. Dalipe
CEBU City’s Joint Venture Selection Committee (JVSC) will award the P25-billion joint venture contract to Filinvest Land Inc. (FLI) today.
The decision came after Acting Mayor Michael Rama denied with finality the Province’s appeal to be allowed to bid for a portion of the South Road Properties (SRP).
Capitol consultant Rory Jon Sepulveda said the Provincial Government will respect Rama’s decision, although a legal team will look into it.
“That’s the end of it. That ends the genuine puzzlement,” Sepulveda said in a press conference yesterday. He earlier expressed “genuine puzzlement” over Rama’s decision to return Capitol’s appeal to the JVSC.
Rama rejected yesterday morning the Province’s appeal to reverse the JVSC’s decision disqualifying them.
Capitol filed the appeal on Wednesday afternoon, without paying the P125-million appeal fee that the City said is required under the City’s Joint Venture Ordinance.
Sepulveda said the fee is baseless and not found in the ordinance.
“Dili man na appeal fee, kastigo man na. That is a belated attempt to really stymie the Province,” said Sepulveda. “My goodness, they should be more creative than that.”
Final
“It is clear that our appeal has already been ruled upon by the chief executive in accordance with the ordinance. So that’s it,” he said. He said they will also wait for further instructions from Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
The City said the acting mayor’s decision is final and executory, since the Province has already exhausted all administrative remedies in questioning JVSC’s decision.
The JVSC has declared the Province ineligible to challenge FLI’s unsolicited proposal.
In a letter addressed to Garcia, Rama said he affirmed the committee’s decision on Capitol’s application for eligibility, which was disapproved, and the rejection of its subsequent motion for reconsideration.
“I have gone over your appeal for reconsideration as well as its supporting documents and found nothing therein that would warrant a reversal of the JVSC’s decision. I concur fully with the committee’s decision, and, therefore, affirm it,” he said.
The letter was delivered to the Capitol yesterday morning.
In its resolution, the JVSC said the Province is not a private entity and “does not have the overall capability for the joint venture undertaking called for in the ordinance with regards to legal, financial, technical and economic parameters.”
By authority of the governor, Cebu Provincial Planning and Development Officer Adolfo Quiroga submitted a letter of appeal to Rama last Wednesday afternoon.
Gray area
When asked why the appeal was tackled even if Capitol did not pay the P125-million appeal fee, the JVSC chairman said it was still a gray area whether the fee is required in the eligibility appeal or appeal of the decision on the bidding results.
Rama said he is convinced that the matter was dealt with caution and that all bidding procedures and rules under the Joint Venture Ordinance were complied with.
Following the denial of the appeal, City Administrator and JVSC chairman Francisco Fernandez said they can go ahead with awarding the contract to FLI today, four months after the firm submitted its unsolicited proposal.
FLI officials are expected to attend the JVSC’s meeting at City Hall for the awarding of the contract on the joint venture to develop a 50.6-hectare portion of the SRP.
The project is the first joint venture at the SRP.
Once awarded, the City can convert to cash FLI’s irrevocable bank guarantee of P250 million. The amount represents one percent of the P25-billion cost of the joint venture activity.
Since FLI’s bank guarantee expires today, Fernandez said it will be obligated to renew it because it will form part of the firm’s down payment for the project.
The offer
Last Sept. 25, FLI submitted an unsolicited proposal to develop a 50.6-hectare portion of the SRP through a joint venture with the City. It committed to invest at least P25 billion to construct 875,000 square meters of building space in high-rise condominiums, office buildings and commercial and recreational areas.
From the JVSC, the contract will be submitted to the City Council for approval. They will also have to authorize the mayor to enter into and sign the joint venture agreement with FLI.
“After the awarding, it will be submitted to the City Council tomorrow afternoon for them to recommend it and authorize the mayor to sign the contract, which will then become a public document. We have been very transparent with all of these things and we are confident we can defend the contract in Plaza Miranda but as to how long
it will take the council to approve it, that’s their prerogative,” said Fernandez.
In a news conference yesterday, the city administrator reiterated his appeal to the Province to put the issue to rest, and not challenge the JVSC’s and the mayor’s decision in court.
‘Grateful’
He said the Province can still enter into a joint venture agreement with the City covering other properties within and outside the SRP.
“As for the administrative remedies, they have exhausted all means available under the joint venture ordinance. Now if they will take this to court, that is their prerogative, but I hope they will not. That is our appeal to them. Can we not put this issue to rest na lang unta? If they want a joint venture with the City, let’s not use the JVSC, there are other properties... In other words, dili na lang unta i-challenge ang Filinvest because this has dragged on for so long,” he said.
Fernandez also said he did not expect the Province to file an appeal immediately and thought they will wait for the seven days provided for in the ordinance, which would have delayed the awarding of the contract to FLI.
“They saved us from any delay and if they are conscious of this, that they filed the appeal in haste because they did not want to delay the project, then I am eternally grateful to them. They have not delayed the awarding yet and I hope they will not do it by filing a case in court,” he said.
