Please add your Cebuano Chicken Lechon! Senior Pedro's lechon manok is popular here in Bulacan and is giving Baliuag Lechon Manok some stiff competition. I love the fact that your lechon manok doesn't need any sauce at all! From the skin to the bones, everything is tasty. Especially with the tanglad inside. Nice!

New Gullas-Osmeña feud brews over Lusaran

Rep. Eduardo Gullas and Mayor Tomas Osmeña may yet figure in another fight, after the Cebu City mayor opposed the inclusion of the Kotkot-Lusaran Watershed Forest Reserve in the five protected areas in Metro Cebu.

Osmeña recently declared he wants Gullas to leave out Lusaran from his House bill, as he wants this to become “the future Baguio of Cebu.”

Gullas, for his part, initially refused to comment, adding he does not want to get into another argument with Osmeña.

But he later said in the interview that he “will look into the move.”

“There is a technical working group, we will get the members’ opinion on the matter,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

Cebu City Councilor Gabriel Leyson submitted a draft resolution to the council last week, inviting Gullas and fellow Reps. Antonio Cuenco (Cebu City, south) and Raul Del Mar (Cebu City, north) to an executive session on House Bill 3624.

This way, the body could help endorse the measure to Osmeña “for acceptance.”

Gullas said that appearing in an executive session “is a good idea” but he will not commit yet: “I don’t know my schedule.”

Councilor Leyson, for his part, is doubtful that Gullas would appear in the executive session on July 20 because of the conflict he has with Cebu City officials.

“It’s up to Gullas if he attends. Let’s see if the mayor will support his bill,” said Leyson, who is planning to run for Talisay City mayor in 2007.

Mayor Osmeña wants Lusaran, despite its protected status, developed into a summer destination for tourists. Cebu, he said, has these great potential destinations where visitors can enjoy both the hot and cold in one location.

Gullas is inviting all Cebuano congressmen to join him as authors of House Bill 3624.

Management

This provides for the establishment and management of Lusaran, Buhisan Watershed Forest Resere, Mananga Watershed Forest Reserve, Sudlon National Park and Central Cebu National Park.

Gullas also yesterday rectified talks that three House bills with the same content were submitted. He said he was the first legislator who submitted the bill last Jan. 19.

“Congressman Cuenco only submitted his draft of House Bill 3643, which has the same provisions as my bill much, much later. Cuenco’s draft is the same as the one I already filed earlier, word for word, page for page,” he said yesterday.

Gullas, however, doesn’t see any problem with Cuenco, as the latter was automatically made a co-author of House Bill 3624.

“I welcome my other colleagues in the province to co-author the bill. I know if I invite them they will not say no,” he added.

More trouble?

Whether he and Mayor Osmeña can avoid one more dispute is another matter.

Gullas and Talisay City officials are claiming jurisdiction over 53.44 hectares of the South Reclamation Project (SRP). This prompted Mayor Osmeña to declare war against Talisay City, because the latter’s claim allegedly contributed to the delay in the issuance of the SRP titles.

Osmeña has banned Talisay’s fish vendors from Cebu City’s public markets; closed the Cebu South Coastal Road, which shortened travel time from the southern part of the province to the city; and fired 77 casual workers, all residents of Talisay, from Cebu City Hall.

I'm proud of the Cebuanos. We should all emulate their way of dealing with political issues like this. Nakakahiya ang karamihan sa mga Pinoy sa Capital city natin. Puro daldal, pero pag tinanong mo kung ano naitulong nila sa ekonomiya natin, walang maisasagot.

@Rusty: What time did you go there? I went to Ayala yesterday at 6:30pm and I was freaking surprised and disappointed about the crowds. There were a lot of them. And there were 3 simultaneous programs going on:
a. Simbang Gabi @ the Foyer
b. Department of Tourism Event @ the Lagoon
c. Thomas and Friends @ the Activity Center
And there was also,
>Metro's Makakurat (tungod sa ka-Barato) Sale which ended yesterday. lol.

Then, I transferred to SM. At least, I found it less crowded there. ;)

good shot @Rusty.... North Rec. has very wide roads 6 - 10 lanes that's why when we pass there, it's like a racing track. But IMO when those projects will open like the Cebu Boardwalk mall, Cebu Megadome, Cebu Doctors College and the Cebu Subway road Tunnel, that wide roads in the coming months will be affected interms of traffic volume and will become smaller to see coz of the increase of vehicle volumes passing along the area and more businesses, buildings or probably more highrises will rise in that area, those current 3 big projects will trigger a momentum of construction in the area......

Expensive problems await Cebu's
2006 ASEAN summit hosting

by Kathy I. Navarro

Lack of presidential suites, ample parking area for large aircraft at the airport, and luxury cars for 17 visiting heads of state are just among the expensive problems that Cebu need to address to be able to successfully host the next summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in December 2006.

This does not include the conference venue, security concerns, support vehicles, cleanliness of Cebu as a host city.

Does the government have enough money to fill in the gaps?

According to Tourism Regional Director Dawnie Roa, there was nothing to worry about as Cebu has one year to prepare for the next summit.

"Bakit mo po-problemahin yan? (Why worry about that?) Cebuanos will produce what is required, we have one year to prepare for that," Roa said.

During the summit, 10 presidents or heads of states will be coming to Cebu with their ministers. Heads of seven other countries that are dialogue partners of ASEAN will also arrive.

Roa said Cebu has an experience hosting the Asian Tourism Forum (ATF) in 1998, when there were fewer hotels and there was not even a venue for the conference such as the grand convention center at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug.
Roa said she recalled that the convention center was built in time for the hosting of the ATF.

Nagiel Bañacia, Cebu City protocol officer, said Malaysia had two years to prepare when they hosted the ASEAN Summit just a week ago.

Earlier, Mayor Tomas Osmeña, who went to Kuala Lumpur to observe the hosting of the event, said Malaysia provided 17 top-of-the-line and bulletproof BMWs that the heads of states used.

Each costs millions of pesos.

Osmeña said he doubted if there were 17 of these types of cars in the country.

"Ang pangutana dinha, kinsa ma'y mopalit ana (The question is, who would purchase these vehicles)?" said Bañacia, who also went to Malaysia as part of the Philippine delegation.

He said each country would be provided with at least 30 vehicles for its presidential security, support staff and members of the media.

Bañacia added that some heads of states uses 747 aircraft. Mactan-Cebu International Airport would not be able to accommodate three 747 aircraft at one given time, otherwise, the ongoing commercial operations would be affected.

Cebu has less than 10 presidential suites according to Manny Osmeña, owner of Hilton Cebu Resort and Spa, the newest five-star hotel in Cebu. This is not enough to accommodate the 17 presidents, he said.

Bañacia said the existing major hotels have to undergo major renovations to produce the presidential suites that will pass international standards.

As this developed, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo gave her verbal approval to the proposal to declare a holiday in three cities of Cebu during the summit, said Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

Osmeña said he asked the President's permission to declare a holiday in Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu cities, where the ASEAN delegates would stay, for the duration of the summit. /With Correspondents Regina Aguilar and Jhunnex Napallacan

Cebu economy bullish in 2006

by Irene R. Sino Cruz

The economy of Cebu faces bullish prospects in 2006 since tourism and other growth drivers will continue to repeat its good performance this year, according to Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Robert Go.

During a yearend briefing for local journalists, Go said tourism, exports and services, which were bullish throughout the year, were expected to remain this way next year.

"We will have more information and communication technology (ICT) companies investing in Cebu with the deregulation of the voice-over-Internet-protocol (VOIP) and the opening of more ICT parks," Go said.

He also noted that business process outsourcing (BPOs), including the medical transcription sector, would continue to expand next year.
Cebu is now hosts to a number of call centers and BPOs although the industry has expressed concern over the lack of qualified applicants.

The tourism sector will also continue to grow next year, Go pointed out.

He noted that this holds true for the entire Central Visayas.

Central Visayas, he said, has realized its growth forecasts for international arrivals.

"The realization of growth forecasts in international arrivals has not been dampened by the peace destabilizations and natural catastrophes that occurred in 2005," Go said.

He noted that more tourists would come from the People's Republic of China and South Korea because of the growing prosperity in these countries.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has been actively promoting the Philippines in these two countries, which are identified as major sources of tourists.

Korean tourists have edged out their Japanese counterparts as the top market for the region's tourism industry.

Resorts will continue to attract tourists, Go said, but wellness facilities and services would become a major tourist attraction in the coming years.

Cebu's hosting of the ASEAN Summit next year will also boost Cebu's economy since the national government is allocating P1 billion for the hosting of the event.

Aside from this, he said, Cebu's tourism industry will benefit from the exposure it would get.

At the same time, he said, domestic travel would also boost the industry because of promotional fare rates being offered by airlines.

The competition among local airline companies has driven down fare rates.

The export sector would also continue to be a major contributor to the region's economy, Go pointed out.

Although overall export performance during the first three quarters of 2005 has been flat, he said, such export products as garments, processed foods and other industrial goods have registered double-digit growth.

"The growth in non-ecozone (economic zone) exports practically compensated for the negative growth it registered in 2003 to 2004," Go said.

However, he said, electronics exports are expected to pick up next year.

He also noted that the year 2006 would be better than 2005 due to the perception of increasing political stability.

The employment picture in Central Visayas likewise showed a slightly better picture, Go said.

"National Statistics Office surveys showed an increase in the number of employed and a decline in the number of unemployed," he pointed out.

The unemployment rate in the region was 12 percent, 0.8 percentage points lower than that in July 2004, Go said.

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority reported an increase in the number of employed in the economic zones in the region, while the Philippine Overseas Employment Authority reported an increase in the deployment of overseas workers, he added.

The region's average inflation rate is also lower than that of the entire country, Go said.

"The average inflation rate in Central Visayas for the January to October 2005 period stood at 6.5 percent, 1.3 percentage points lower than that of the Philippines for the same period," he said.

Few daily dose of good news:

PCCI: International gateways to boost RP tourism

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) on Monday said local tourism will get a big boost from international gateways, which will attract more tourists and generate more income for the country.

PCCI vice-president Samie Lim said the tourism industry plans are now setting up international gateways to make the country more attractive to tourists.

"Tourists have limited time. They want to see as much as possible, do as much as possible. We must bring them to a gateway close to word-class tourist attractions that would only be one hour from there. They must get out of the airports in 15 to 30 minutes and then must get to their place in one hour," Lim told ANC.

Lim said the PCCI is helping the government to cluster tourist attractions near the international gateways. He said that among the international gateways already set up are the cities of Cebu, Manila and Laoag.

"Cebu is probably ahead of the pack. They are the first ones to organize themselves and they have an ambitious plan to attract five million tourists in Cebu by 2010. The next gateway is Manila. I think Mayor Atienza is doing a good job in Manila, and so are the other mayors in greater Manla. But Laoag seems to be the most enthusiastic. Governor (Ferdinand) Marcos has been rallying on Northern Luzon," said Lim.

He said the next gateways in line are Davao City and the former Clark Air Base in Pampanga.

Lim said the PCCI is targeting five million tourists in a five year-span.

"So far we’ve already registered 2.7 million tourist in two years. So we are ahead of our projections," he said.

He added that tourism also generated 2.5 million jobs and P3 billion worth of revenue.

"In terms of agriculture, in terms of manufacturing, we may not be as competitive as other countries. But there is no question in my mind the Filipino hospitality, the ability to speak English and all of that, these are things that are God-given. We must make use of them," he said

Cebuano-Made
By Arch’t. Karl A.E.F. Cabilao, UAP

THIS architect could only blurt out an unusually sedate reaction when he recently received news about his feat in this year’s Metrobank Art and Design Excellence National Competition (Made).

“Honestly, I joined this competition not really aiming at the grand prize but I just wanted to show the people, especially those in imperial Manila, what designers from way outside the capital are capable of producing,” says Arch’t. Noel K. Tan, the lone Cebuano awardee who copped the grand prize in the Architecture Category. He adds that he was quite surprised why he was the only one from the Visayas who took part in the contest.

This year’s Made search expanded its program to include sculpture, interior design and architecture categories. Thus, Tan is the first-ever winner in architecture and he did it on his first lick at joining design competitions.

Made was launched last year by the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. after 20 years of handing out citations to promising painters under the Young Painter’s Annual. Just like its past competitions, it seeks to “provide a venue for talented artists of various disciplines to express their creativity and provide them with incentives to further hone their craft.”

Tan’s entry to this contest, which he aptly calls “Fusion”, is a residential project that he did for a relative in Pardo. The house literally stands out since it possesses a unique look that really catches one’s attention amidst clusters of run-of-the-mill, Mediterranean-style houses. “It’s quite strange why Filipinos keep adopting foreign styles, like Mediterranean and American, when we can use techniques that are more suited to existing environmental conditions here,” says Tan. He justifies the “Fusion” tag, stating that this house is “a product of synthesis between native cultural elements and responsiveness to climate conditions, between vernacular and new, progression and conformity and mostly, tradition and modernity.” “It is suited to a fast-paced lifestyle but remains sensitive to cultural and environmental factors,” he adds.

With this achievement, Tan envisions himself exploring new design philosophies that can have positive effects in the built environs. And when asked how important architects are to society, he explains, “The work of an architect is very powerful, considering the impact that it would make on its surroundings. For example, when one builds a mall or commercial center in a certain place, it influences not just traffic flow but also the lifestyle of the residents nearby. So, I say architects are integral to community and nation building.”

For Tan, the Made grand prize is just icing on the cake. He was more than happy to get his “cake”, which was to make Manila people notice and appreciate Cebuano design and ingenuity. And they sure had more than their slice.

Expensive problems await Cebu's
2006 ASEAN summit hosting

Urbandub

http://myspace-090.vo.llnwd.net/00267/09/02/267432090_m.jpg
Home Town: Cebu Philippines

One of my favorite bands.. I am inlove with their music, too emo guid ya...
Fave song: Lover among Ruins

Listen to their tunes at their myspace:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=3179973

The Sound Of The Giant South is gaining more recognition around the nation like never before. At the forefront of the whole movement is a band that has a record that surpasses most bands than that of the bands that have come out of the Queen City of Cebu. They are none other than Urbandub.

From the very first day that this band was formed (in the year 2000), they were destined to be something more than the ordinary. Forced to be independent due to the lack of support coming from major record companies, Urbandub released their debut album called BIRTH. Off of this album, the hit tracks "Come", "Give" and "Would You Go" launched and took their world by storm. Unique, timely and yet experimental, it was something that entertainment scenes around the Philippines needed: a kick start into the future of original music.

With the release of their sophomore effort, INFLUENCE (Lighter Records), Urbandub took on a new form, changing their sound with a new drummer (From Jed Honrado to Jerros Dolino). It was the sound in this album that clearly defined the steps that Urbandub would start to take. The track "Soul Searching" later won the award as Best Song of the Year in the NU107 Rock Awards 2003. Pushing the sound further, the collection bagged the Album Of The Year Award in the NU107 Rock Awards 2004.

Today, Urbandub now offers yet a third helping of what they are capable of. With the 2005 release of the album EMBRACE, Urbandub has proven that there is hope for the struggling artist. With help from their community and the noise they have created, they were able to grab the attention of EMI Music Philippines. Not one to take chances, the band has kept Lighter Records as their management arm and guide. In line with their ideals, EMI allowed them the creative freedom to record their album on their home soil of Cebu. Added to that, they have been able to maintain their independent principles while taking major steps into the scene that has awaited their new sound.

Urbandub is Gabby Alipe (Vocalist / Guitarist), Lalay Lim (Bassist), John Mendoza (Drummer) and John Dinopol (Lead Guitarist).

Urbandubs career thus far has given much inspiration and support to upcoming acts, most of which fall under the Lighter Records stable such as Faspitch, The Ambassadors, Still, Nuncyspungen (Cagayan) and Point Click Kill (Ilo Ilo). Each of them now aspire to take their own roads in music, paving their own way and modeling some of their steps after the success of Urbandub.

Lover among ruins lyrics:

The last words were spoken
Was left there just standing around
Trying to grasp what you said to me
Your goodbye was the last thing on my mind
I tried to reply but was left there tongue tied…

How could you ignore it?
Brushed it all aside
Wasn’t ready for the
Big surprise…

Took me down
Your mouth like a gun
I couldn’t believe that you’re letting me go…

How could you ignore it?
Brushed it all aside
Was left there empty handed
When you said goodbye…

Goodbye.

We envision an Integrated Transport System that would feed into an LRT connecting to Mactan International Airport, the proposed Cebu International Port and into the Tourism Corridor with the main terminal located at the Sheraton Hotel located beside SM City wherein Cebu passengers can connect to the North through the North Coastal Road and to the South through the South Reclamation Project.

Hey, who went to Ayala recently? Are the expansion works beginning?

I just want to clarify this because I just read an article that the Ayala Center Cebu expansion would begin in middle 2006 yet.

Here it is
----

The last major project is the expansion of the Ayala Center in Cebu, the biggest urban center outside Metro Manila. Development will start by the middle of next year to be completed by early 2008.

December 20th, 2005, 05:54 AM
^^ the only sign is the uprooting of the bermuda grass near the terminal. also, i think they will transfer the parking area and the terminal first before starting with the expansion of the building. Maybe thats why they are putting a new parking area across the main entrance of Metro.

Manila itching to host ASEAN summit, Osmeña says
by Kathy I. Navarro and Jolene R. Bulambot, CDN

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said Monday that until now, officials in Manila could not accept the fact that Cebu will host the 2006 summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and are looking for reasons not to hold it here.

"The Department of Foreign Affairs is trying to find an excuse not to do it in Cebu but the President said this thing will be done here," Osmeña said.

"So, we don't want people to feel that choosing Cebu was a big mistake that's why we have to make a major sacrifice," Osmeña added.

One of the sacrifices for the city government was to purchase two luxury cars for use by heads of state who are coming for the summit, despite a shortage of funds.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has pledged a P1 billion budget for the entire event.

Mayor Osmeña said the city government could purchase one or two units of BMW or Mercedez Benz limousines, which would cost around P5 million.
"Let us buy some. The city government might want to buy one or two limousines for guests to come here," Osmeña said.

Osmeña also said the city government would take charge of the cultural night and the international media who could come to Cebu to cover the event. "This would give us some advantage," he said.

The city government, he said, would use its own money to entertain the visitors, saying, he did not want to give Manila a chance to grab the credit of a successful show.

As this developed, Adelberto Yap, general manager of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA), expressed concern over the limitations of the airport in accommodating an influx of aircraft during the summit.

"There are 10 ASEAN members plus those countries invited to attend the summit like Russia, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and the United States and they would all be bringing their own aircraft and that's the problem there," Yap said.

Yap said one step he could take is to urge the Philippine Air Force to transfer its junk planes now occupying the military ramp near the airport to another site.

The 20-hectare military ramp, he said, could be utilized as parking bay for the aircraft of the delegations.

Cesar Dona, chief of the operations division of MCIAA, said that the airport board was intending to put up 12 additional parking bays once the military parking ramp is turned-over to them.

The green area of the remote parking apron will also be developed and cemented to be utilized for aircraft parking.

Two additional passenger tubes or bridges will also be built at a cost of P135 million to accommodate more 747 aircraft.

Yap said the board has approved a P800 million budget for next year.

He said the construction of the MCIAA administration building just in front of the Mactan Waterfront Hotel would be completed in 10 months in time for the summit.

Hey whats the status of that other building in Osmena Blvd (not the Club Ultima)? Somebody posted a pic of it taken from one of them elevated walkways.

@jeff, you mean kani nga building? GV Hotel, it's already topped off... but this pic below is not the latest... took this sometime October.

I also hope that they'd place an "ala BAYWALK" near Boardwalk Mall.

yup, there is along with the yacht club... I've read it sa ilang original plan for the Boardwalk last year....

btw, is CITEX part of the cebu boardwalk complex or its another project.. diba ang CITEX ky mura na ug exhibition hall..

there is an existing lot for the megadome project. last year, due to the megadome project uncertainties, mandaue city mayor thought of approving another proposal from the Dept of Trade and Industry which is CITEC (Megadome's proposed location) an internat'l exhibit center with a japanese hotel. it costs more than a billion pesos compared to Megadome's P250M budget. the japanese gov't will fund the project but will take some time pero at least mas sigurado. besides, the megadome can always be built somewhere else such as South Road Properties should CITEC takes-over the Megadome's land. now that the Megadome project is revived, Mandaue City mayor is willing to transfer the CITEC project to another lot to give way for the Megadome which is more urgent. basta, mao na na :D

You're right @Rusty, the CITEC will be transferred to SRP to a lot offered by Mayor Tom and the Megadome's site is in NRA Mandaue and it's final...

Megadome Now In The Pipeline (A ressurection of a dream)
19th, 2005 by jorge

In the beginning, there was a vision. Then the vision crumbled. Later, it reappears. And now, it looms closer to reality.

Such was the dramatic ressurection of the Megadome project. After it was shelved indefinitely for luck of funds to build it, the project is finally in the pipeline. Thanks to Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia’s indomitable persona to bring it closer to reality. The project would have been a dream forever had it not been due to the ASEAN Summit next year that Cebu is scheduled to host.

As earlier planned, the structure will stand in a 4-hectare lot in Mandaue City’s reclamation area. According to the engineers, the building will not be finished in time for the summit unless the work is round the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Megadome would be the main venue for the summit of the Asean region’s 10 heads of state plus 7 other leaders from Japan, China, Australia, Korea, India, Russia and New Zealand.

When finished, the Megadome will be an architectural marvel in Cebu due to its beautiful avante-garde design that would surely give Cebuanos a sense of pride. The spinning disc design of Alexus Medalla won the contest that Capitol launched three years ago. He will get 10% of the total cost of the project as his prize.

FORT SAN PEDRO and it's environs

Our first walk will start at the entrance of the fort.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/arnoldsa/fort01.jpg

The Spanish Royal Coat of Arms welcomes visitors going inside. Above the fort is a balcony (the one with the Philippine flag) where Spanish King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia waved for the last time the flag of Spain during their visit to Cebu in 1997. They were the very first Spanish royalty to have ever set foot on their former stronghold.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/arnoldsa/fort04.jpg

Inside the hallway one can find an early grid map of Cebu city (From Santo Nino Church to the Cathedral to the Pari-an) which was sketch by a Spanish friar. One can also see pictures of the said fort during the American occupation.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/arnoldsa/fort05.jpg

The National Museum holds its regional office at the ground level of the fort to the right from the entrance.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/arnoldsa/fort06.jpg

A garden stands proud at the center. During the 1980s this site was home to the Cebu Zoo until its eventual transfer to Capitol Hills. Right now, the area is a favorite place for garden weddings and other special occasions like the opening dinner for the East Asian Tourism Forum (EATOF), which was hosted by Cebu in 2002.

In front of the Malacanang sa Sugbo is the Plaza Independencia Park, soon to be renamed "Malacanang South Park." The monument below at the park was erected by the late Mayor Solon in memory of the WWII war veterans.

A few walks away from the Plaza Independencia park is the Kiosk that houses the Magellan's Cross.

A picture of the old city hall building (to the right partly covered by the tree) and the new annex building (the one at the back). The old and abandoned building to the left is subject for restoration and conservation. There are so many historical buildings here in downtown Cebu that are in need of restoration to no avail sadly because of lack of funding and political will.

we are very PRO-GMA, actually.

That's nice to know. Someone from Cebu who happens to be a member of the ABS-CBN forums mentioned that Cebu is neither but eitherway, Cebu is helping in giving our economy and the country ulitmately, its much needed negating force against the dark forces of destabilization. Actually, the fact that you guys didn't get influenced by the evil ones is something a lot of pro-constitution admire. Myself included. :)

From the pics that I saw, I must say Cebu is even waaayyy better than a number ASEAN capital cities. I can't wait to see those proposed projects to change Cebu's landscape. I hope Davao, Puerto Princesa, Dagupan and other key cities would achieve the same economic developments as Cebu is enjoying at this time. The first step to achieve that I guess is to stop complaining and depending too much on the governement and work double time, earn twice as much and start entrepreneurship.

^^ gdp per capita for thailand is twice that of ours, which is a real shame. The Thai economy overtook the Philippine economy in terms of size about a decade ago i think and they number only about 60 million people compared to our 85 million. If we dont get our acts together i bet even Vietnam would surpass us (god forbid) :) .

Economy-wise, Thailand is a notch higher than the Philippines... based on currency.

Few years ago, Thai's Baht and Philippine Peso are of the same value. But today, 1 THB is worth 1.30 PHP. so technically their currency has bigger value now.

1 USD - 53.44 PHP
1 USD - 40.93 THB

opinion ko lang to ha, i don't know if currency is a valid pure economic indicator :D

No - on its own, a country's exchange rate says nothing about its economic position, even less its living standards. For example, the Japanese yen has always had a very low exchange rate, but this does not mean Japan is a poor country!
The most commonly used indicator of living standards is the GDP per head (a country's total income divided by its population) - this is nowadays refined to reflect a country's purchasing power. However, many are no longer satisfied with GDP per head either and prefer the HDI (Human Developement Index) which combines GDP per head with other factors such as life expectancy, infant mortality, literacy rate, etc...many economists feel this gives a more complete picture than simple GDP per head rankings. :)

Even if their figures say they are economically prosperous, philippines have more good looking CBD's and skylines. we've got beautiful tourist spots but minus the tourists. haha. it is very unfortunate we've been left out in terms of international tourist arrivals :(

If we dont get our acts together i bet even Vietnam would surpass us (god forbid) :) .

I believe our huge economic slowdown can be attributed mainly to the numerous coup attempts during the Aquino administration. Tsk tsk tsk. We could've been ready to roar as a Tiger. And we're now hearing rumors of future coup attempts. We should never tolerate these kinds of political adventurism of some selfish individuals and military people. I'm saddened by your news guys. All the while I thought Bangkok shouldn't consider itself more superior than Manila. But then, I guess I'm wrong.

CEBU: GUESS WHO'S STOPPING THE KOREANS FROM GOING TO RP?

CEBU CITY, December 9, 2005, (Star) INSIDE CEBU By Bobit S. Avila - Cebu?s share of the country?s tourist arrivals has risen so sharply in the past two years. They?ve gone from weekly chartered flights to Korea to thrice weekly flights of both Asiana Airlines and Korean Airlines. One can predict that soon those flights will become daily. Indeed, the Koreans have beaten the best efforts of the Japanese air carriers just on the Cebu-Korea-Cebu route alone. Now do you think that those jumbo planes are full of Filipino passengers going to and coming from South Korea? No sir, they?re packed with Koreans, especially in this season where the cold weather in the Korean peninsula is unbearable and no one can play golf!

Without a doubt, the exodus of Koreans to Cebu and elsewhere in the Philippines has contributed to our nation?s economy, filling up once empty hotel rooms. The Koreans ride in our taxicabs, eat in our restaurants (they still eat in Korean restaurants), shop in our malls, and play lots and lots of golf, and more importantly, because Koreans are known for their efficiency, they make good use of their vacation to get something out of it? more than just a vacation, they go home speaking English!

Indeed, learning how to speak English has become something of a national pastime for Koreans (and I know, this is also happening in Taiwan and the Chinese mainland), who have gone out of their way to rent dilapidated buildings in downtown areas in Cebu City that most of the upper crust no longer want. It?s the equivalent of reviving the old Avenida or Escolta district in Manila fueled by Korean money!

I know, for instance, that the old hotel called Harbor View (it was once known as the Triton Hotel) belonging to our dear friend, Ambassador (now Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs) Frank Benedicto, has been rented by Korean businessmen. In the past, that hotel really didn?t make money because it was located just across the old provincial jail. But since Gov. Gwen Garcia moved the provincial jail to the hills of Kalunasan (where the view is breathtaking), at least the area is already acceptable to the Koreans. So, too, with the Winner building, which used to house the first dim sum restaurant in Cebu. Because Cebu?s tourism has influenced Bohol, the Koreans are also there in droves.

At this point, we can only hope that this trend continues? that the Philippines will continue to attract more tourists from our neighbors who pay good money for their short stay. But apparently, there?s a growing problem, which I believe is fast becoming an irritant to the influx of foreigners to this country, something we don?t really need.

Like what we?ve said earlier, the coming of the Koreans in droves is also due to their efficiency in getting something from their vacation through the opening of small English language schools operated by Koreans in Cebu and I?m sure this is also happening in other places in the country. All this is due to their passion to learn the English language, something that we ought to relearn!

In doing its job, the Bureau of Immigration (BID) must have learned that the reason why many Koreans have started going to the Philippines is more than just to have fun in the sun and sand. All of the sudden, the BID pulled out Memorandum Order No. ADD-02-006 signed by then Immigration Commissioner Andrea Domingo on Feb. 5, 2002, or three years ago, exacting an accreditation fee of P50,000 per foreigner who teaches in short-term English language schools.

Of course, this memo doesn?t cover Koreans only as it mentions all foreigners. But ask yourself? who else are arriving in droves to our shores creating a boom in tourism if not the Koreans? There?s no other nationality I know who is doing this, except for a few Japanese. What is important to note is that the Koreans are not taking jobs away from our English-speaking Filipino teachers simply because we do not know how to speak the Korean language. In short, they are bringing in Korean teachers to teach English to fellow Koreans!

Now I?m not against the BID getting a small share of this growing industry spawned by the Koreans. But P50,000 bucks a pop is just too much; it doesn?t sound like a fee anymore but a penalty! Why don?t you find out what kind of penalties the BID exacts from violators and you?ll be surprised they are not in the neighborhood of fifty grand! The question really is, is this a fee or a fine? It sounds more like a fine to me! Why couldn?t the BID exact a P8,000 fee? That wouldn?t be too much, then they can exact a P50,000 fine for foreigners who violate this ruling.

What worries me is that because of what the BID has done, it just might reverse the current trend and the Koreans may find another country willing to accept them. There?s an old saying, "Do not kill the goose that lays the golden eggs!" In this case, we?re not only harvesting the golden eggs, we?re cooking the goose!

Before it is too late, I suggest that Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez and Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano sit down together and solve this potential problem. If the BID wants to get a share of this business, surely, they can secure a lower accreditation fee, instead of the present prohibitive P50,000 a pop! Let?s be reasonable and lower this fee as many Filipinos are directly benefiting from the present Korean invasion, and exacting an exorbitant fee may just repel the coming of more Koreans.

@Bulakenyo: Entrepreneurship! hmm... reminds me of Mr. John Gokongwei, a Cebuano.

As I quote: "Choose to be an entrepreneur because then YOU create value. Choose to be an entrepreneur because the products, services, and jobs you create then becomes the lifeblood of our nation. But most of all, choose to be an entrepreneur because then you desire a life of adventure, endless challenge, and the opportunity to be your BEST SELF."

Is Thailand more properous than us? I think the Philippines and Thailand are on the same level in many aspects, economy included. I could be wrong though.

the philippines is already way behind thailand and it will take years before we can equal their current status. it's very sad the once sleepy countries have gotten us unaware they are already ahead of us.

but you know, if cebu is a country, it's economy is better than that of thailand. i read this from a national daily. isn't that inspiring?

we used to be second to japan in terms of economic status and one of the highest standards of living in asia, but these have all gone. let's keep the pace cebu and let the other cities/towns emulate us so they will catch us up as well. in the long run, the philippines as a whole will get to the status where it was before. it is not that we want to be ahead of other countries, but in keeping the situation of giving the filipinos better lives. equally sharing the philippines' wealth among every individual in its populace.

sorry for the late responses...

talking of aid... the philippines is one of the founders if not the founder of the manila based asian development bank. south korea used to be the biggest creditors of that institution. recently, they are one of the biggest aid-provider as accounted in adb. the philippines? one of the biggest creditors. sadly though.

1 USD - 40.93 THB

opinion ko lang to ha, i don't know if currency is a valid pure economic indicator :D

the stability of the currency is one indicator of a good economy. it is not solely based on which currency is higher than the other when converted to usd that makes a better economy.

1 USD - 53.44 PHP
1 USD - 40.93 THB
1 USD - 120 JPY

but the japanese is far immense than the formers.

the philippine peso is the strongest performing currency in all of asia in recent dates. we hope to maintain this in the days, weeks, months, years to come.

2003 GNP figures

Thailand 31 124 billion $
Iran 32 115 billion $
Portugal 33 109 billion $
South Africa 34 106 billion $
Israel 35 105 billion $
Venezuela 36 98.6 billion $
Egypt 37 96.5 billion $
Myanmar 38 92.9 billion $
Ireland 39 92.8 billion $
Malaysia 40 87.2 billion $
Singapore 41 86.8 billion $
Philippines 42 84.7 billion $

Difference for GNP between Thailand and Philippines is 39.3 billion dollars.
OFW remittances only account for 8 Billion dollars (official figures) running to as high as 12 billion dollars unofficially, still insufficient to bridge the gap :) .

yeah thanks for pointing that out, im also confused why Myanmar would have a higher GNP than the Philippines, it has a very repressive military dictatorship, poor infrastructure and almost no tourism industry at all, it must be a typo!

@tigidig
your absolutely right, Cebu thread should be about Cebu so i'll be posting relevant articles like this one:

Carcar's pride of place shines
through Kabkaban feast

By Augusto Villalon
Inquirer News Service

CEBU'S premier heritage town pulsated with tradition during Sunday's Kabkaban Festival in Carcar. The history of Kabkaban parallels the rise of heritage awareness in Carcar.

The local affiliate of the Heritage Conservation Society, the Carcar Heritage Conservation Society (CHCS), has been working for years to revive interest in the special heritage of the town.

They believed a special event could refocus attention on the town's vanishing heritage, so they solicited funds and organized the first Kabkaban Festival in 2000.

Succeeding festivals since were modest, parallel with CHCS's slow progress in raising local-heritage awareness. It took a long time for locals to believe their town's heritage was unique not only to Cebu but to the Philippines as well. The residents and local government had other development ideas for the town. Preservation was not on their agenda.
Since 2000, CHCS and the local government struggled with conflicting heritage visions. The conflict ended this year when Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia guided both sides toward unifying their vision to recognize and preserve their heritage.
The first step taken was to declare Carcar a heritage town.

The provincial and local governments, together with CHCS, sealed their support and committed to preserve the town heritage by passing an ordinance, the first such in Cebu. It was signed just a few weeks before this year's Kabkaban.
With the passing of the ordinance, private-public agreement, essential to the success of heritage projects, was finally attained.

The provincial and local governments provided generous subsidies to underwrite this year's festival and asked CHCS members to plan and organize the 2005 festival.

Kabkaban Festival this year signaled the start of cooperation of all sectors to preserve heritage in Carcar. There was much to celebrate.

The day kicked off with a sale of artworks by Carcaranon and Cebuano artists, who donated their proceeds to fund CHCS projects.

Romulo Galicano, a nationally acclaimed award-winning artist born in Carcar, donated a major oil painting for auction which raised over P260,000 for the CHCS.

But it was Carcar itself that was on display that day.

Manny Castro, Jerry Alfafara and Zarah Castro, Carcar's leading heritage advocates, threw open the doors to their magnificent Spanish colonial homes, inviting everyone to see for themselves why the Carcar Heritage Conservation Society is determined to save the treasures of the town.

Their houses never looked as good as they did that day, each coming through with a proud sheen I had never seen before.

Carcar's treasures go beyond the town's colonial homes, church and convento.

Its calado architecture from the 1920s is unsurpassed in the country. The wooden facades of the Carcar Dispensary and Saint Catherine's Academy have carved fretwork so delicate it seems like they could flutter with the breeze like fragile heirloom lace.
Wooden houses from the unappreciated post-war era still stand in Carcar streets, a type of architecture so descriptive of life during that forgotten period of our national history which is sadly dismissed by many as not of heritage quality.

A wonderful round kiosk from the American period, one of the best surviving examples of its genre in the country, valiantly stands at the center of the Carcar Rotunda, whose pride of place is now totally stolen by offending super large-scale billboards.

The Kabkaban parade, choreographed by the award-winning CHCS member and 2005 festival organizer, Val Sandiego, wound its way from the hilltop church to the town below.

Carcar youth danced tirelessly through the streets to the rhythm of drums and loud brass bands, followed by barangay members who walked behind colorful floats, waving and calling out to their friends who either lined the sidewalks or watched from windows.

It was a festival for the townspeople. It was a family event without the tourist polish the major festivals somehow put on in their later years. Everyone was simply having a grand time that day.

The festival organizers vowed to keep the spirit of the festival alive as an event expressing Carcar culture, rather than degenerating into a dance competition like today's commercialized Sinulog Festival of Cebu City.

And the festival was superb. All of the participants danced in the streets with such gusto, joined by spectators whenever they could. It was in no way a well-rehearsed polished performance seen in most of the institutionalized fiestas in the country.

Kabkaban came through with authentic Carcar flavor, reinforcing local identity so well you could see the Carcaranons glow with pride.

It was so much fun that I am definitely going back next year.

Heritage watch

Take a look at the street lamps that have recently sprouted on the Pasay side of Roxas Boulevard.

@ jrvalde, there's nothing to be confused about, ....look at the figures again....the Philippines is still ahead of Myanmar....42 plus billions vs 38 something billion dollars...(we know they cook the books anyway) :)

Also remember that these are GNP figures (the total income of the countries) - this is normally divided by that country's population to find out their per capita GNP.

sorry tigidig, i'll add something about this matter for the last time (hoping).

thailand has more than 10 million tourists and each tourist spends an average of 1,000 USD. if we would have that same number of tourist, undoubtedly, the philippines will regain its heyday status. we only manage to get around 2.5 million tourists and a considerable percentage of that went to "CEBU" :) we'll get there!!!

ofws, be like me, send your money to the philippines, save it there, don't save it in your host countries (ngil-ad no?) hahahha. and train your beneficiaries back home to spend it wisely, and, invest some, build skyscrapers... so this thread will have lots of stories to tell. :)

o, kung di ko magbinoang ug di magbinoang akong hapon nga boss. hehehhe. bitaw, i am trying to familiarize myself very well with the technologies we've got here. hopefully, if all goes well, cebu will have a medical and virtual reality software development center. actually we already have one software engineer who is having his studies on dicom (digital imaging and communications in medicine) and c++ there in cebu. he is one of us here lurking into updates of cebu's growth. in a year or two, hopefully.

wow! the writer indeed's right.....most of our fellow men are complaining bout the recent situation of our country. However, they are the ones leaving the country to work abroad. How can the philippines be developed if its blood and soul-the filipinos are abandoning it?

I think thats the edge of Cebu. coz cebuanos just love the island that much! i can see that cebuanos are really working hard for one evident cause - Cebu's progress! and just like Korea, im pretty sure that Cebu in itself, will become one of the richest and most progressive cities in asia - ten to twenty years from now!

It aint a plan or a promise! but these things are happening already and u can see it here in mainland Cebu!

hope they have houses to live in. inter-city migration is so rampant that it poses threat to the livability of a city. people who don't find decent jobs end up living in makeshift houses. modaghan ang squatters.

cases when they have a good source of living, they help alleviate the economic conditions.

please spare me. hahahahhha. i have no intentions to stay here for a long time. my diaspora is just on a temporary basis and i will be going home with an investor. hehheheheh.

my boss told me during his tender years, the japanese who left japan studied every bit of technology from the west and afterwhich returned back home. technology transfer. the case is different with pinoys, they die there.

as far as i know, a big percentage of those who leave the country, especially bound for the states, are well-to-do.
