right ... but the proposed CIP transfer to cordova was on the mactan channel
side of the then proposed mactan south reclamation project. that western
strip of the MSRA was then proposed for port/commercial use. haum jud unta
nang PCG project. not on the eastern side of cordova cause that's still a
tourism precinct (at least if the master plan is followed).

Ang tuyo siguro sa mga CG kay para makahapit pud og pang-chicks, kay dool ra baya na sa mga bikini hot spots...Heheheheh

Siyempre, di mobilib ang babaye anang mga CG unya vintage pa gud og patrol boat.

pareho jud ta'g gi-huna2x bay. imagine everyday of your life, you work right
beside a 5-star tourist resort! lupi'g pa man nila'y baywatch! he he he. bitaw,
if the government owns that property, why not give it to DOT or build a tourism
oriented government facility there? the government can always find another
suitable place for PCG.

Coool trailer! hehehe. Hollywood level action movie na ni?
Medyo awkward lang gamay ang acting. Hehehe. Pero tingali ug dili pa kaayo anad. But the angles and cinematography looks great.

Sakto oi, maypagka simang bitaw na nga facility. Nahibong lang pod ko. Agree that the side of Cordova facing Cebu is the best site for this.

Ayala Center to open "Active Zone" by third quarter (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=488594&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
Updated July 21, 2009 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines – After the opening of the multi-million expansion “The Terraces”, Ayala Center Cebu gears up to open its first “Active Zone, by the third quarter of this year.

ACC division head Joy Polloso said the mall will be converting the two-level Ayala Entertainment Center, into an Active Zone that can accommodate around 20 tenants selling sports-related gears, equipments, and ready-to-wear items.

The facility is currently undergoing construction and will be completed by the third quarter of this year.

In 2008, ACC posted 10 percent growth of its total revenue last year, contributing to a “still” dynamic retail market in the metropolis.

“The year ended on an even positive note with the grand opening of The Terraces. This brought additional 8,500 square meters of leasable area that offers many first in Cebu such as popular restaurants, coffee shops and a wellness zone,” said Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) president Francis O. Monera.

Monera said aside from the active Cebuano shoppers and diners that boosted the growth of the shopping and leisure/entertainment mall, he said the positioning of ACC as a tourist destination also attracted increasing number of domestic visitors from all over the country, especially from neighboring provinces, to experience the sophisticated shopping and entertainment environment.

Monera said the strong presence of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) here, which provided high-paying jobs, also sustained the good performance of the entire retail arm operation CHI last year, amid the fragile economic landscape.

He said the influx of IT and BPO workers in Cebu that have high disposable income have helped the entire retail industry cope with the projected weak retail demand which started last year.

“Ayala Center Cebu is positioned to be the lifestyle icon in Cebu. With this, our focus is not to compete with other malls but to further work on strengthening our position by refining our brand and introducing trailblazing concepts to the market,” Tongco added.

Meanwhile, because of the volatile economic landscape threat, CHI is holding off its specific schedule to start the development of South Surface Parking, the area fronting the Rustan’s Supermarket, now being utilized as car park.

The South Surface Parking is part of CHI’s super-block within the Cebu Business Park.

CHI will be allocating another budget for the South Surface Parking development plan, additional to the almost P1 billion budget spent in the Annex Building and The Terraces projects. — Ehda Dagooc

HK company eyes projects in Cebu
First Posted 13:29:00 07/21/2009

A Hong-Kong based company has expressed interest in investing in different projects in Cebu including the province's Trans-axial highway project.

An advance party of the Gammon Engineering said they already approached Gov. Gwen Garcia and expressed their interest in investing in the province.

The company which has projects in Great Britain, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, has a project with Ayala in Manila for a shopping mall.

Garcia said the proposed Trans-axial Highway project, the island’s accessibility brought by the presence of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) and pending projects like the bulk-water supply and the solid waste development projects were an added attraction to these investors.

The governor said that her friends, Mariquita Salimbangon – Yeung and husband Carlos introduced her to Gammon Engineering officials, who indicated their interest to “develop” projects in the province.

Garcia also cited security and safety in Cebu as among the vital ingredients for any investment.

She said that company representatives wanted a meeting between the government and the company's top executives who would visit Cebu to assess the leadership and consider the infrastructure investments in the province.

The company representatives said that the firm was also interested in expanding the Mactan Cebu International Airport and Cebu ports.

Garcia said she planned to invite heads of the company in August on One Cebu Expo during the opening of Philippine-Russia Business Forum.

She said that Gammon officials would be able to see the products of the province since Small and Medium Enterprises will be putting up booths for the event.

Scrap coal ash dumpsite plans, Cebu officials urged
By ELLALYN B. DE VERA
July 21, 2009, 4:14pm

Environment advocates urged the provincial government of Cebu to drop its plan to set up a dumpsite for coal ash by a beach, citing the dangerous levels of harmful chemicals contained in the waste product associated with cancer.

According to the Ecological Waste (EcoWaste) Coalition, the building of a dumpsite is being proposed in Naga City, Cebu province in time for the operation of the 200-megawatt Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) in February 2011. It will be used to receive tons of coal combustion waste or coal ash from said power plant.

In a letter faxed to the offices of Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez Jr., the EcoWaste Coalition expressed its “profound objection” against the planned dumping of coal ash at the provincial government-owned Balili Beach Resort in Naga City in Cebu.

EcoWaste president Manny Calonzo said the KEPCO will pay $1 million to the Cebu provincial government for the permit to dump.

The letter from the group bolsters earlier opposition lodged by Cebu law faculty lawyers Gloria Estenzo Ramos and Benjamin Cabrido for the engagement of the provincial officials in the business of coal ash dumping.

“In the greater interest of human and ecological health, we urge the government of Cebu to apply precautionary principle, reconsider its coal ash deal with KEPCO, and prevent a potential chemical crisis that might even cost beyond the US$1 million promised by the company,” said Calonzo.

“We urge the government of Cebu to learn from the unfolding health and environmental problems in the US due to toxic releases from coal combustion waste ponds, pits, dumpsites and landfills, some of which have been declared as Superfund sites or toxic waste sites requiring very costly cleanups,” he added.

According to the group, “coal combustion byproducts are not exactly benign waste” as these can contain dangerous levels of harmful chemicals associated with cancer and non-cancer risks such as arsenic, boron, cadmium, cobalt, lead, mercury, molybdenum, nitrates/nitrites, and selenium.

Citing a study conducted by international environmental group Greenpeace Southeast Asia, EcoWaste said ash samples from the coal-fired power plant of the National Power Corp. located in Calaca, Batangas tested positive for toxic metal mercury.

The EcoWaste Coalition also questioned the capability of the provincial and city authorities to monitor, regulate, and mitigate the adverse effects of coal ash dumping to ensure the long-term health and safety of the constituents, water supplies and marine resources.

Citing another report released in March 2009 by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the group noted that the disposal of coal ash, especially in unlined ponds “results in alarmingly high risks of cancer and diseases of the heart, lung, liver, stomach and other organs and can seriously harm aquatic ecosystems and wildlife near disposal sites.”

In the same report, the EPA warned that “contamination from coal ash ponds will not peak until about 78 to 105 years after waste is dumped, while peak exposure from landfills may occur after even longer periods of time.”

P6M heist fails; 4 ‘robbers’ held (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/p6m-heist-fails-4-%E2%80%98robbers%E2%80%99-held)
Sun-Star Online

By Jovy T. Gerodias

FOUR men, three of them armed with short firearms, rob-bed a woman of about P6 million worth of diamond jewelry yesterday afternoon, but were captured within minutes.

They drove past a police station during their escape.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

Jennifer de la Cerna, 38, of Bulacao, Cebu City had just left a fast food chain at the corner of F. Llamas St. and Natalio Bacalso Ave. when two men poked guns against her neck.

Without saying a word, one of the robbery suspects snatched her yellow sling bag.

That bag contained seven pieces of assorted diamond jewelry estimated by de la Cerna to be worth about P6 million, plus more than P30,000 cash and her cellular phone.

The robbers left the terror-stricken de la Cerna with a scratch mark on her neck, but without firing a single shot.

She said her husband, who was with her, had run out of phone credits and could not phone for help, so he tried to chase the fleeing robbers on board their motorcycle.

De la Cerna, on the other hand, shouted for help.

The robbers, who boarded a black Mitsubishi Adventure Wagon (ZBW 867), then made their fatal mistake. They drove right in front of the Punta Princesa Police Station, and got stuck in traffic.

Asset

Punta Princesa Police Station Chief Gilberto Abellar Sr. said that a man, who claimed to be an asset of a police unit, arrived on a motorcycle at the police station and pointed to the getaway vehicle.

Abellar immediately led a seven-man team and chased the fleeing robbers.

SP04 Gualberto Oroc, one of the team members, said that about 30 meters away from the police station, four men hurriedly got off after their vehicle got stuck in traffic on Tres de Abril St.

The four men headed toward Victor Village I, abandoning the vehicle and inside it, the loot and the guns they used in staging the robbery.

The police cornered the robbery suspects at a dead end inside the village, within minutes.

Police identified the arrested robbery suspects as Noel Salig Davis, alias Jack-Jack, 44, of Panabo, Davao City; Kirby Baguio Abanilla, 27, of Barangay Pasil, Cebu City; Frederick Mancao Ybañez, 35, of Catadman, Ozamiz City; and Jeromy Sande Polistico, 44, of Clarin, Misamis Occidental.

From Ozamiz

Police believed that Abanilla served as the local contact of the robbers. He kept mum when asked to comment about the allegation.

Recovered inside the vehicle were the yellow sling bag of de la Cerna, two .45 pistols, one .38 revolver, three loaded magazines for .45 pistols, 12 bullets, and backpacks and bags filled with clothes.

Polistico, in a brief interview with Sun.Star Cebu before he and his companions were brought in for tactical interrogation, said he merely served as the driver of the Mitsubishi wagon.

He said the group brought the vehicle all the way from Mindanao. They arrived yesterday morning, he said, from Ozamiz City.

He, however, claimed he was just told that they would be picking up something in Cebu. He refused to say who the leader of the group was.

In an interview with reporters at the Cebu City police force’s headquarters, de la Cerna said that before the robbery, a female friend called her up at noon and said she wanted to show the jewelry to potential buyers from Talisay City.

Returned

De la Cerna said she met her friend and gave the jewelry.

At 2 p.m., de la Cerna’s friend, whose name she gave the police for follow-up, called her back.

De la Cerna’s friend wanted to see her again to give back the jewelry because she and the potential buyers failed to meet.

The two agreed to meet in a food chain at the corner of F. Llamas St. and N. Bacalso Ave., where de la Cerna’s friend returned the jewelry.

Shortly after the woman left, de la Cerna said she also walked away.

Outside the food chain, she was robbed.

Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Patro-cinio Comendador said at least one or two of the arrested suspects was linked to the twin robberies of Oro Sugbo Pawnshop and Jewelry Store and its sister-firm, Agencia Anne Jewelry Shop, in Barangay Ermita, Cebu City in May 2008.

During that robbery, the suspects hauled at least P13 million worth of jewelry.

Warning

Comendador said the arrested robbery suspects are members of an organized robbery group, which has been coming in and out of Cebu. It is also not a remote possibility that the robbery group is connected to the Mindanao-based Kuratong Baleleng Gang, Comendador said.

One indication that the group is organized was its access to resources like a getaway vehicle and firearms.

Since last Sunday, Comendador said, the CCPO has been on alert after receiving “very reliable information” about the arrival of the group. The police expected them to strike within the week.

Comendador said he ordered Supt. Pablo Labra II to supervise the intelligence monitoring as well as warn the business community about the information.

All the arrested suspects are now detained at the CCPO stockade.

As for Cinerama, the initial plan was to renovate and re-open as company-owned but there was an unsettled issue between Zobella Holdings (the franchising company) and the owner of Cinerama bldg. Dili man ma-turnover sa company so it's gonna be closed na gyud.

CEBU is abuzz about this big wedding on July 18. The color motif defies convention – black, which the Chinese shun.

But to the wedding couple, black means drama. Hervé Lampert, 33, president of Dedon Furniture, (yes, that expensive status symbol outdoor furniture brand is made in Cebu) and businesswoman Tess Gonzales, 35, will be tying the knot at the city cathedral. It will be his first marriage and the bride’s second. The black gown will be designed by Cary Santiago.

Principal sponsors are a power cast – Amparito Lhuillier, Mariquita Yeung, Mary Ann Tirol, Teresin Mendezona, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia and Pinky Chang.

Male sponsors include Michel Lhuillier, Gregg Huettel, and Wing Lip Chang. About 40 guests will fly in from France.

The cavernous ballroom of Waterfront Hotel will have only 110 guests, all seated at a very long table.

Church in dirty Politics

It is written in our constitution the separation of the State and the Church. But is this ever true in our country? I can honestly say NO. We all know that every major political changes in our country the church has something to do with it. Like the People Power Revolution or EDSA I and EDSA II would have never happen if it not called by our late great Cardinal Sin. It is also written in our history since Christianity have been introduce to the Philippine that most Filipino follow the church like a mindless drone.

You don’t believe me? Haven’t you notice that almost all politician will seek the endorsement of the church or one of the major religious group in the country? Or that 9 out of 10 politician endorse by the church won the election. Now we have this Priest PANLILIO the Governor of Pampanga who has plan to run for president in 2010. Which got me thinking is this why the church is very much oppose to Con-Ass are they trying to put every piece of the puzzle to take over the government. Let face it with the Philippine 75% Catholics a priest running for the position to be the head of state is very likely will happen and pretty soon it is going to be like what we read in our history books when Spanish Friar meddle with the government and pretty much run the country.

All I can say is if this priest ever win in 2010 I will sell my property and move out of the Philippines and only to go back when he is out of the position.

Lapu sees P10B revenues from reclamation project (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=489294&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
The Freeman Online (Philstar)
By Ehda M. Dagooc Updated July 23, 2009 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines – The Lapu-Lapu City government expects to earn P5 billion to P10 billion in revenues in the next few years, as the 400-hectare Mactan North Reclamation and Development Project (MNRDP) kicks off operations.

This early, the City government led by Mayor Arturo Radaza is working to get its Environment Compliance Certificate (ECC) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and notice to proceed from the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA).

In an interview with MNRDP project manager Michael Dignos, he said that the project is running on schedule and full development of the area will start immediately after the elections in 2010.

The project, which will cover four barangays of the city, namely; Ibo, Mactan, Buaya, and Punta Engaño is seen to bolster the economic strength of the city, as it will be positioned as the next financial district in the Philippines, second to Makati City.

As soon as the project will be implemented, Lapu-Lapu City will have its own International Port, Information Technology and tourism zones, retirement village, golf courses, among others.

Based on a feasibility study, Dignos said the reclamation project will contribute multi-billion-peso revenues estimated at P5 billion to P10 billion every year, depending on the contracts entered into by locators and developers of the property.

The MNRDP got the approval of the Office of the President in 2004, and was reiterated by the PRA last year.

“We are running on schedule,” Dignos said adding that full implementation of the project may start immediately after the election in May of 2010.

For its first year, MNRDP is expected to rake in a revenue contribution of P2 billion to P3 billion. The full utilization of the property however, will bring revenues to as much as P10 billion annually.

According to Dignos, there are already a lot of prospective and interested investors that expressed interest to locate at the area, but the government can not negotiate yet, as documentary processes are still on works.

For one, he said the Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ-1) has already expressed interest to put its expansion site at the area, among other investors like resorts, hotels, retirement village, golf courses, and other businesses.

The need for reclamation project in Lapu-Lapu is needed in order to sustain investors’ appetite to locate in the area, as it is considered as the tourism center of Cebu province.

Dignos said as soon as all documents will be completed the government will soon implement to start the project.

Attracting locators is not a problem, he said as even this early a lot of investors are already waiting and have proposed their plans of developments in the area.

Last Tuesday, the City government of Lapu-Lapu awarded its top 20 taxpayers in 2008, that include mostly multinational companies operating on the island such as Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa, Lear Automotive Services (Netherlands), Corporation, Hilton Cebu Resort & Spa, Mactan Electric Co., Inc. (MECO), Plantation Bay Holdings Corporation, among others.

Lapu-Lapu City gained new investments of P4.7 billion in 2008. More new investments are expected to pour in on the island especially as soon as the MNRDP is already operational.

Cebu landowner to host first eco-center in Southeast Asia (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=489063&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
The Freeman Online (Philstar)
By Ehda M. Dagooc Updated July 22, 2009 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The Tri-Globe Capitals of Canada has entered into a partnership with a Cebuano landowner to establish a P600 million first Eco-Center in Southeast Asia to be situated at a 3.5 hectare property on barangay Sabang, Olango Island, Lapu-Lapu City.

The Tri-Globe Capitals and Canton family led by Macaraig Canton Jr.,formed the Cebu Eco-Center Inc. (CEC) that will manage and operate a 50-room, 100-bed resort facility along with classrooms, a scuba diving center, electronic library, observation tower (for the bird sanctuary), restaurant bar, mangrove walkways, spa and wellness center, first-aid clinic, and a dock to receive small craft from other islands.

In a press conference, CEC president and chief executive officer (CEO) Marc Canton said that the phase one of the project which will build the resort facility and support services is expected to finish in one year’s time after the company will break ground this coming October. This first phase will incur the company at least P160 million.

The company is looking at acquiring adjacent properties within the development to pursue a total of 6.5 hectare long term development.

Canton said phase 2, which is set to get started after the completion of Resort structure, will involve a larger cooperation from the local government unit (LGU) as it will set up the needed infrastructure support such as waste water and solid waste management system, development of renewable energy using the sea-pressure turbine, as well as solar and wind energy, establishment of water supply technology using Reverse Osmosis and desalination, among others.

This project is the first accommodation facility to be set on the popular Olango Island, which is the sanctuary of migratory birds from all over the world. The property is located in the Southeast corner of Olango Island, right next to the bird sanctuary.

Since the development is going to involve largely environmental responsibility and sensitivity so as not to disrupt the eco-system of the bird sanctuary and marine reserves in the area, Canton said the company has partnered with environmental experts like the Scripps Institute of Oceanography—University of California in San Diego and the University of San Carlos (USC), and also deployed environmental experts to study area.

“CEC is designed to be a center of excellence for coastal management ecosystem, marine biology and ornithology,” Canton said.

Although, the Tri-Globe Capital has committed to even fund more projects up to $1 billion (Canadian dollar) here, Canton said CEC has also gotten a financial back up to 70 percent of the total project cost from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).

The group of investors from Canada, through the Tri-Globe Capitals were convinced to put in money in this kind of development in the Philippines, following the country’s Eco-tourism Destination award given a Nature publication in France.

The Canadian investors are also impressed of the government through Department of Tourism (DOT) strong advocacy in promoting eco-tourism.

Although the eco-center’s accommodation will be designed as world-class, Canton said room rates will be pegged in a very affordable range.

It will provide a European-sea-class-hotel level with rates seen to hover within $40 to $50 (Canadian dollar) per night.

Based on International Ecotourism Society (IES) statistics, about 15 percent of the total tourists around the world are eco-tourism enthusiasts, and this number is growing as “green” interest has becoming more popular all across segments.

Canton added that although 15 percent are hardcore ecotourism travelers, about 90 percent of the worldwide tourists prefer a place that is “green.”

Aside from providing economical boost to 5,600-resident barangay on the Island, Canton said the facility will also hire local residents to man the facility. A free medical clinic for the residents will also be installed, Canton concluded.

.....Canton said phase 2, which is set to get started after the completion of Resort structure, will involve a larger cooperation from the local government unit (LGU) as it will set up the needed infrastructure support such as waste water and solid waste management system, development of renewable energy using the sea-pressure turbine, as well as solar and wind energy, establishment of water supply technology using Reverse Osmosis and desalination, among others.

Lapu sees P10B revenues from reclamation project (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=489294&publicationSubCategoryId=108)

They are now counting the chicken even before the egg is not being laid yet.:lol:

Residents of condo mull charges against own property developer

By Debra Magallon-Estero

RESIDENTS of a high-end condominium project are considering filing a case to revoke the license to sell of the developer of Citylights Gardens Towers.

Lawyer Deolito Alvarez, spokesperson of Citylights Gardens Towers 1 and 2 residents, alleged that developer Syntech Properties Inc. failed to restore the water supply for his clients.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

Alvarez said that last March, Syntech allegedly re-routed the water connection of 144 units in Citylights Gardens Towers 1 and 2 to supply the newly opened Citylights Gardens Towers 3 and 4.

“It is very inhuman on the part of Syntech to cut the water supply (to Towers 1 and 2 residents),” Alvarez told a press conference last Tuesday afternoon.

Due to the water supply disconnection, Alvarez said Citylights Gardens Condo Corp.—through its legal counsels Fernando Yu and Jose Glenn Capanas—filed a contempt case against Syntech in April.

He said that following the filing of the contempt case, Syntech has committed to restore the water supply on June 1. However, he alleged that the developer did not fulfill its obligation.

Syntech, in a statement sent to Sun.Star Cebu yesterday, said that it has “faithfully complied with the re-piping of the water system to benefit the entire condominium project.”

But the unit owners of Towers 1 and 2 refused to use the water after the piping system was reverted to its original set-up, Syntech said.

“Upon completion of the re-piping of the water system, Citylights Gardens Condominium Corp.-Towers 1 and 2, through its board, had unilaterally refused to be recipient of potable water that is sourced from the central tank,” the Syntech statement reads.

The developer, in the same statement, said the valve switch for the cistern is under the direct control of Towers 1 and 2, and has “never been under the control of Syntech.”

Syntech is open to the conduct of an ocular inspection to verify the allegations.

Citylights Gardens Condominium Corp. also filed an injunction case against Syntech for allegedly taking over common areas and facilities—including roads, clubhouse and swimming pool—in the condominium complex.

Citylights Gardens Condominium Corp. is asking the court for moral and exemplary damages amounting to P1.5 million.

Mayor wants investment body (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/mayor-wants-investment-body)

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

BEFORE the end of his term, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza will issue an executive order creating the Investment Haven Promotions Office to maximize the potentials of the city’s development projects.

He made this announcement Tuesday during the Lapu-Lapu City Taxpayers Night at Hilton Cebu Resort & Spa.

In his speech read by Lapu-Lapu City Vice Mayor Mario Amores, Radaza said the promotions office will implement the “best and effective means of investment promotions and business facilitation program.”

The program, Radaza said, is meant to “actively assist prospective investors…(to) find the best possible type of business to undertake” and to provide other services to ensure that the investors have ease, comfort, and confidence in doing business in Lapu-Lapu.

“Later on, with your trust and confidence and the support of my fellow Oponganons, we can fortify this body (promotions office) through a congressional legislation,” he said.

Radaza is now on his last term as Lapu-Lapu mayor. He has earlier chosen his wife Paz as his successor in the 2010 elections after announcing plans to run for a congressional seat.

Amores, in an interview, said the Investment Haven Promotions Office will also be a “pro-active” link between City Hall and the non-traditional sources of revenues, such as socialized housing and fish sanctuaries.

Amores and Paz led the awarding of the city’s top 20 taxpayers last Tuesday. The mayor was reportedly ill at that time.

The top three taxpayers in Lapu-Lapu were Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Lear Automotive Services (Netherlands) Corp., and Mactan Electric Co. Inc.

Mayor Radaza said the event was meant to express gratitude to investors for helping the government carry out programs and services that made Lapu-Lapu the Most Competitive City in the Visayas in 2008.

Megaport, Hoops Dome priority projects (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/enterprise/view/20090723-216855/Megaport-Hoops-Dome-priority-projects)
By Dale G. Israel
Cebu Daily News

A megaport and a “Hoops Dome” are among the priorities of the Lapu-Lapu City government.

These long term development plans were aimed at making the city a first class urban center, said Mayor Arturo Radaza in his State of City Address (SOCA).

The mayor’s SOCA was read by Vice Mayor Mario Amores during the Taxpayers’ Night, which was attended by top business executives in the city Montecarlo Ballroom at the Hilton Cebu Resort and Spa.

Amores explained that Radaza had fever and could not attend the affair.

But the mayor sent in his wife, Paz, to represent him in the distribution of awards to the top businesses of the city.

In the speech read by Amores, Radaza said they had shifted their strategy to bring in more tourists to the city.

He said they would focus on sports tourism or hosting international sports competitions.

This can be done through the Hoops Dome, a private-sector owned facility in barangay Gun-ob, which will have a seat capacity of 8,000.

The mayor also reiterated his desire to complete the 400-hectare Mactan North Reclamation and Development Project (MNRDP).

In an interview after the program, Amores said that in 5 years time, the MNRDP proposal will have completed its site development component.

“It includes an international seaport which would help even our existing locators at the Mactan Export Zone because they will cut time travel in going to the Cebu International Port (in Cebu City),” Amores said.

Amores said that the MNRDP is on its final stages.

The mayor had been receiving proposals from Middle East businessmen interested in going into a joint venture project with the city government.

“I cannot tell you who these businessmen are because I might preempt anyone. But all I can tell you is that these people have the money (in financing the project),” said Amores. If im not mistaken, mao na gitawag ug pueblo system di ba? the church being the central part of a municipality/town is surrounded by important economic, social, and political structures like the governor's house, the town hall, market, school, convent, etc.

that's also true, but from the church point of view (nga sila'y central part, he

authorities - the civilian government, the religious authority and military

Sir, IMO, in our country there is separation of the church and the state in the sense that there is no such thing as a state religion. In late 20th-century Philippine politics, the Catholic church (in the person of Cardinal Sin) merely asserted its position in the whole political landscape because it felt the need to do so. Di ba naa man tay saying nga "All it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing." On the flipside, Sir, puwede ra jud baya unta nga ang mga people wala unta maminaw ug mutuo kang Cardinal Sin, in the same way as puwede ra ta dili maminaw ug mutuo sa leader sa usa ka obscure nga kulto who will suddenly preach nga kinahanglan maghimo ta ug tunnels para naa tay katagu-an because the end of the world is near. My point is, wala may nagpugos sa mga tawo nga mutuo or dili mutuo. Not the church, not the government. Siguro we can find parallelisms in small-town America, where the small protestant denominations "rule" and dapat jud friendly ang politicians sa ila, or else, ang mga conservative nga people, di na mubutar nila.

As for Panlilio running for President, dili gihapon ta makaingon nga the Church is attempting to breach the Church-State divide. For one, Among Ed is not supported by the Catholic church (kuwang nalang gani i-disown ni siya). Second, he is running based on his own discernment and decision, not as a man of the cloth, not as a priest, not as a member of any religion, but as an individual. As a citizen of the Philippines, he is qualified to run for President. We can also try to find a parallelism in Fr. Romero (forgot the first name), a Latin American priest who was one of the proponents of Liberation Theology. What he did was so much frowned upon by the Catholic church, too, but in the eyes of the oppressed, he was a hero.

Huling hirit pa jud, Sir. Ato i-trace ang 2 most prominent politicians who got thrashed when the Catholic church decided to assert itself: Macoy and Erap. Angay pa gani siguro ta nga malipay. And when Panlilio won against the reigning, aw, incumbent governor (if I'm not mistaken, Joson man siguro), tumaba ang puso ko. There has got to be a lot of good (and good sense) left in this world.

Waterfront to meet econ rebound with expansion (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=489589&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
The Freeman (Philstar Online)
By Ehda M. Dagooc Updated July 24, 2009 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The tough competition among City hotels in Cebu, and the introduction of newer facilities have prompted Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino to embark on a multi-million-peso renovation program by the third quarter of this year.

“We already got the go signal to finalize our third wave renovation program,” said Waterfront Hotels general manager for Visayas and Mindanao Marco Protacio in a press conference.

The renovation program will reinforce the hotel’s leadership in attracting the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions/Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) market in Cebu, which is now affected by the global recession.

According to Protacio the hotel, which is owned and managed by the Gatchalian-controlled Waterfront Philippines Inc. (WPI), will improve the facilities of the hotels with the renovation of the lobby, standard rooms, and establishments of more support facilities such as Urban Spa, Call Center, more function rooms, gym, among others.

Protacio admitted that the MICE market for Cebu has declined in the last few months while companies have streamlined or postponed their conferences and events because of the crisis.

Although the MICE market in Cebu is still in “pretty much” stable level, but he said Cebu is “missing some big conventions.”

“Because of economic reasons, the budget of big companies for conventions and conferences are put on hold, even big firms’ parties. People are holding on to their money now,” Protacio said.

Nevertheless, Protacio said Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino is preparing for the rebound of MICE market especially in next year’s national election and expecting to grow as much as 40 percent for its MICE bookings and occupancy.

Hopefully, he said Cebu will have good MICE bookings these coming peak months from September-October and November, while the economy is showing recovery.

He said Waterfront has decided to renovate, after the last renovation during the ASEAN Summit in 2006, while more new hotels have come up and Waterfront will also have to keep up with the competition.

For City Hotels, Protacio said Cebu is no longer suffering from room shortage saying “we have more than enough rooms.” That is why the industry has to put their hands together and strengthen the strength of Cebu as MICE destination.

The 561-room flagship hotel of WPI, is now running at an average of 67 percent occupancy rate, a little percentage decrease from last year’s the same period.

However, Protacio said Waterfront is still performing above the average industry rate which is at 60 percent to 65 percent.

The additional 500 City hotel rooms that opened in Cebu City this year, has also pose a challenge for the industry players to improve the marketing of Cebu as MICE destination.

In 2007, Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, its flagship property contributed a p732.4 million revenue to the WPI, a 39 percent share from the company’s total revenue income for that year

that's SRP. 150 m man ang ceiling. but the determining factor is the distance
to the runway and location in relation to the takeing off and landing flight path.
SRP is far south and way to the side. MNRDP is immediately at the end of and
directly along the approach flight path! in fact, some of the landing approach
directional lights now are already on the water where the MNRDP is supposed to
be built! check google earth ...

mao bitaw'ng nahibu'ong ko sa mga pronouncements nila. wa nalang ko mo
react sa media kay butangan nasad ug political connotations.

but when we prepared the mactan island integrated master plan study in 1996,
the proposed north reclamation did not cover the entire bay area but was only
an extention/expansion of MEPZ to the north. and the purpose was to expand
the export-processing zone so mga 2-storey structures ra ang proposed
design, 3 max, same as the existing MEPZ. this was to comply with the
airport restrictions. i don't know kang kinsa ning idea ning pagpadako up
to 400 hectares unya all kinds of uses na ang gi anounce2x nga sigurado
man jud ko i shoot down jud na sa air transportation office (ATO). unless
ila ibalhin ang airport.

in the previous plan, it was the mactan south reclamation project (MSRP)
a.k.a. cordova recla, which was given importance, not the north.

Tungod ni siya sa "Law of the Indies."

Tanan old towns and cities sa Philippines kay ingon ani ang set-up.

Plaza ang center and then within the plaza are the church, the government house and other important edifices. The main roads of the town emanate from this plaza.

Here in Cebu City, the old government house was located across Plaza Independencia -- wala na ni siya ron, naguba pag World War II. The center of church power, the Cebu Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace, was also within the sphere.

If im not mistaken, mao na gitawag ug pueblo system di ba? the church being the central part of a municipality/town is surrounded by important economic, social, and political structures like the governor's house, the town hall, market, school, convent, etc.

perfect example gyud ani katong sa vigan.

ps. di ko sure gyud. LOL

that's also true, but from the church point of view (nga sila'y central part, he
he he). the classical view is that the town center is composed of the three
authorities - the civilian government, the religious authority and military
authority. new post hispanic settlements lack this triangular structure.

excerpt from the airline network news and analysis website

Manila dominates Philippines traffic as Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines vie for domestic dominance

The Philippines consists of over 7,000 separate islands in the western Pacific Ocean and with an estimated population of over 90 million, air travel is playing a critical part in the country’s rapid economic development. According to OAG data there are currently 38 airports offering scheduled services. Of these just six offer international flights and three of them have just two weekly international services. This leaves Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila (MNL), Mactan-Cebu (CEB) and Diosdado Macapagal (CRK) as the only real international gateways.

I even got to know some of the "tenants" there. Unya nasunog hinuon... paita... pait pa sa apdo...

And reevaluate kung unsay dapat buhaton to preserve and restore other sites. Basin di pud committed ang mga involved sa heritage preservation project.

And downside lang if ang owner walay paki sa pag preserve/restore. Basin gituyo pud nag sunog.

CHIKA-An sa CEBU
@ SM Cebu - The Northwing

http://www.tripkolang.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/chikahan2.jpg

This resto offers the same cuisine as Dencio’s or Gerry’s Grill in Manila but with a twist because of Cebu’s other favorite and known cuisines. The prices were cheaper and very reasonable (good serving size and 99% appetizing). We ordered calamares, baked scallops, sisig, bistek tagalog (not in picture; forgot to shot ), and rice (unlimited).

Ice Castle at Ayala mall Cebu

Ice Castle – Simply the Finest Halo-halo in Cebu

Here’s our story… while strolling around Ayala mall, we saw people in line, trying to line up in a resto called Ice Castle… Hmmm… Why are there so many people? Got near the entrance, saw pictures of icy halo-halo and big and colorful ice creams… Hmmm… Okay, let’s line up!

http://www.tripkolang.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/img_3556-copy.jpg
Thou the line was long, we didn’t really wait that long because the turnover was quick. We ordered 1 Special Halo-Halo @ 66.50php and 1 Banana Craze @ 125php…

Halo-halo and Banana Craze
http://www.tripkolang.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/img_3550-copy.jpg

Yes it was icy, yummy, and really worth the price. I think their Halo-Halo is very affordable and has more ingredients (sahog) compared to what we have here in Manila. We definitely enjoyed our mini and accidental merienda of Halo-Halo and Ice Cream.

In case you will be in Ayala Cebu, Ice Castle is a must try and you will surely come back for more desserts and ice creams.

Come to think of it, bai. The irony here is that the place was formerly a cinema, and yet before the fire, it was used as a marketplace for an illegal business which is killing the movie industry. Nakakita baya ko sa mga nangalanay nga DVD ganina. Again, "mirisi."

sir, dinhi lagi sa Toronto, naay airport na less than a kilometer away lang sa CN tower...

that's possible. the restriction is mostly along the flight path which is the same
direction as the alignment of the runway. away from that line, the restrictions
are less prohibitive. can't explain details i'm not an airport designer but it may
help if you read anything about FAR Part 77. just search it in any search

excerpt from the airline network news and analysis website

Traffic growth has been impressive in recent years though the 2006 figure for ‘Other’ airports would appear to be an underestimate as Cebu’s traffic data appears to be missing for much of the year. In 2007 Mactan-Cebu handled just over four million annual passengers while Clark processed just over half a million passengers

Company wants to establish first RP cloud computing infra in Cebu (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/company-wants-establish-first-rp-cloud-computing-infra-cebu)
Sunstar Online
26 July 2009

A MALAYSIAN company announced its plan to install a cloud or intra-cloud infrastructure in the country, with Cebu as its pilot location.

Through cloud computing, the Philippines would be a leader in a “network-based services economy,” said Steve Hu, chairman and co-founder of the Power All Network.

With this vision, Power All Network is willing to put in a multi-million dollar investment to set up at least 150 cloud locations nationwide in the next three months.

The company, in a project called “The Philippine Initiative,” also partnered with another Malaysian company Pan Pacific Techno Media (PPT).

Although setting up a cloud does not take long, Hu told a press conference last Saturday that the target timeline would depend on how soon the company can secure government permits and the cooperation of telecommunication companies in the country.

“While we invest and carry the burden of intra-cloud computing, the whole country—government support in terms of public endorsement and assistance in policy (as well as) the telcos’ support in terms of bandwidth and broadband connections—and corporate support in terms of sponsorship are needed,” said a statement prepared by PPT.

Cloud computing, said Hu, is considered to be the third layer of virtual network on top of the current worldwide web and Internet technology.

The clouds, he added, will serve as a storage room for virtual computers, servers and software, making it possible for a person to access content anywhere in the world—as long as there is an existing cloud location.

Hu said that one cloud location would cost at least $2 million while the whole cloud computing industry is already worth $46 billion in 2008, two years after the technology was introduced.

Some of the biggest companies in the world that are already into cloud-computing are Amazon.com and Microsoft.

Hu said that the company chose the Philippines for this project because of the country’s “creative resources.”

He said Filipinos are known all over Asia for their creativity in music, film, entertainment and production. The company wants to distribute Filipino creative products worldwide and the fastest way to do so is through cloud computing, he added.

Yesterday, Power All Network and PPT launched the very first Cebuano TV production that is made available through the worldwide cloud network.

The “Mipahiyom sa Langit”—a joint production by CCTN, a local channel in Cebu, and RAB Mediatech Production Corp. (RAB)—is also available for global distribution and broadcast.

Under the Philippine Initiative, RAB will function as the central agency for production outfits and artists to go to in case they want products uploaded through the worldwide cloud.

i am also from USC.. although for me... sakit paminawon.. but lets us take it not with a grain of salt.. we will ask the current USC admin to look into the its administrative failures and check the curriculum, the competency of teachers etc.. USC during our time is usually having 90% plus percentage sa Nursing..they even had a 99% passing, just cant remember the year.. so perhaps the current administration in the college is incompetent.
Makauulaw kaayo nang 31%... Verallo of Bogo is even higher at 33%..
This is a wake up call sa USC Nursing Department and the USC Admin in itself.. i am sure, heads will roll.

this is the fact. saturated na kaau ang nursing, most of my friends took nursing.. then became RN. unfortunately, ang ilang mga career karon either tambay, call center agent and korean tutor. tsk tsk..

although there's nothing really unfortunate being a call center agent, I agree na nursing schools/students kay over-saturated. IMO the government agency responsible for this and the colleges should get their act together.

bitaw oi.............pero unsaon nalang kong ang mga comments based on reality? ka lisod ba oi :bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash:

or did you mean, the reality you know is based on your experience? the way I see it, making claims nga majority (or at least 51% to put it) of Pinay nurses in the Middle East are like that, is an irresponsible statement, an insult.

mao ba bai...ako lang gi-erase kay mura'g dili na 'to maayo i-post diri bai about nurses...secret na lang..."a one-time bugaw" LOL!
^^ka kuyaw sa ni bugaw, dili ba na human trafficking?

my take on the nursing issue here is, i am cool not to mention im a nurse as well and there are certain points na tinuod and some not. so ana lang. i can't easily condemn everyone here whose comments may literally be negative and overly stated (kay usahay usa man pud ko :lol:) about the profession that i have right now coz nurses are just individuals with different views in life man pud. they may be nurses but not all nurses act and think the same way as the rest. that's why naay nursing ethics that nurses should follow para at least sa among professional life, we all follow the same principle but not when it comes to personal preferences and individual lives.

There's a transport strike at Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu since morning. The paralyzed route so far is when going from or to Hi-way. I don't know for other routes.

Again, it is about time for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) since as far as I know, BRT is immune to transport strikes.
