maayomo July 27th, 2009, 09:27 AM bitaw oi.............pero unsaon nalang kong ang mga comments based on reality? ka lisod ba oi :bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash:
Part, I know you are just being honest with your comments. But then again, matud pa sa akong amigo nga IE, "There's always a better way." So, there's always a better way to manage what you believe are facts. And siguro, one option is to tone down the language, or not say it at all.
For example, part, naay SSC Cebu forumer nga nakadaug ug TOYM award. Prestigious kaayo, di ba? So, nag-pour out ang congratulations diri sa forum. But then I know for a fact that his mom and sister are both whores. So, being the "truthful" person that I am, I start posting comments about this guy, speaking about how his mom and sister are p_kp_ks, right in this forum. Remember, my comments are based on reality. But did I act appropriately?
Here's your hammer: :bash:
Hehe. Just kidding. But I hope I got my point across. Peace, man.

Earlier today a group of rallyists march from Lapu-lapu City towards the Mandaue-Mactan bridge. It has expectedly caused heavy traffic, as strikers prefer to walk in the middle of the road.

Henz July 27th, 2009, 01:27 PM i have just meet my friend, who just passed the Nursing Board..i am sorry for him, cause he is now resigned to the fact that he cant possibly have a job right now using his Nursing degree. he is now working in a company in Asiatown IT park because as he said, if he will not work, he will go broke. i pity him really.
In our company, we have a nurse who opted to just become encoder for now, since, she could not even find a place to have her internship or training. if they can find a hospital to train, sila pa ang magbayad sa hospital wala pa kasegurohan na ma employ in that hospital after the training.
i hope the government will look into this. dili baya barato ang Nursing degree. tapos inig graduate, wala diay sila opportunities.

[dx] July 27th, 2009, 05:04 PM Sokor pledges USD3M for Cebu-Bohol bridge feasibility study (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=2&sid=&nid=2&rid=220492)
CEBU CITY, July 27 (PNA) – An ambitious plan to link the central Philippine islands of Cebu and Bohol with a bridge is getting closer to reality after the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of South Korea pledged a USD3 million-grant for its feasibility study.
Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado announced the funding for the feasibility study of the Cebu-Bohol Friendship Bridge during a recent meeting of the Regional Development Council (RDC) 7 in Tagbilaran City. ”I am happy to report to the RDC that one of our mega-projects, the Bohol-Cebu Multi-Access Friendship Bridge now has the support of EDCF,” Aumentado told the RDC 7 full council meeting.
The RDC in Central Visayas asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to endorse to the Korean government their request for funding assistance for the feasibility study on the proposed bridge, the first between Cebu and Bohol. Aumentado said he will meet with the Korean ambassador on July 28 to “thresh out the mechanics of the project.” He said endorsements from various agencies are required for the funding to be released.
The proposed bridge project will have to be endorsed by DPWH, the NEDA Investment Coordination Committee technical board, NEDA board and the foreign affairs secretary. Aumentado said it is the foreign affairs secretary who will then endorse the request for funding to the Korean government.
The Bohol governor believes the bridge project will improve commerce, technology sharing and the exchange of power and water between Bohol and Cebu. Aumentado said the project was conceptualized in 2006 yet but the feasibility study was not started due to the lack of funds.
Initial reports said the bridge will be 90 kilometers long and will cost at least P20 billion. But Marlene Rodriguez, RDC 7 vice chair and National Economic Development Authority (Neda)7 regional director, told the PNA the bridge length is only 18 to 20 kilometers and the cost of its construction is still to be determined.
”Funding for the actual project implementation is not a problem. We can have it through BOT (build-operate-transfer) or a loan. But I prefer it done through a BOT,” Aumentado said. Once the bridge is up, Aumentado said, it will be easier to bring water from Bohol to Cebu, in contrast to earlier proposals to use submarine pipes. Bohol, in turn, can also take advantage of the bridge to tap Cebu’s excess power, he said.
The operation of the Kepco and Global Power plants in 2011 is expected to generate an additional 400 megawatts for Cebu. Aumentado said when he attended the recent Asean South Korea summit with President Arroyo, a Korean embassy official informed him that his government was “willing to give due course” to the request for USD3 million for a feasibility study on the proposed bridge, “provided that we follow the process. :)
btw, mga Igesia Ni Kristo ba jud kaha to tanan nangatend ganiha sa rally. more than 60 Ceres buses man to ako nakita-an ganiha nga naghuwat. estimate nako tanan2x sobra man siguro 200ka mga bus naka parking sa daplin apil mga laing bus.
federalist July 27th, 2009, 06:10 PM ragarding sa USC issue, normal ra na sa mga nangwarta nga institution. ang Velez ug Normal naa jud silay limit pila ra ka students ila dawaton while ang uban schools ang kita ra ila giapas.
like Southwestern before during thet 70's, 80's, and 90's almost always 100 % ila passing percentage, but during this decade nga modawat na silag daghang students just for the profits, ni down jud ila passing rate. there was even a year nga niabot ug 38 sections ang usa ka year level alone. and during 2006, 6000 plus ang population sa nursing sa SWU, ang UC is 5000 plus while ang UV is more than 3000 i think.
the result of this low passing rate is due to the volume of their students.

jsl_bxu1206 July 27th, 2009, 07:59 PM Cebu sees growth in tourist arrivals from new markets
By MALOU M. MOZO
July 27, 2009, 6:03pm
CEBU CITY – Apart from the Koreans, Japanese and the Americans – Cebu’s top foreign market arrivals – the local tourism industry has observed growth in visitors from new markets that are now beginning to discover the province’s tourism potentials.
Data from the Department of Tourism (DoT) 7 revealed that from January to June this year, Cebu registered a growth in new tourist markets, including China (85.45 percent), Hong Kong (12.84 percent), Russia (52.86 percent), Vietnam (91.78 percent), India (38.06 percent) and Denmark (23.66 percent), among others.
Saudi Arabia and other Middle East countries collectively posted a 297.60 percent growth or from 2,004 visitors in the first half of 2008 to 7,968 visitors in the same period this year. In an interview with Manila Bulletin Monday, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said the total volume of tourists going to Cebu was up by 2.3 percent in the first semester of 2009. "We achieved this despite a slowdown of Cebu's traditional international markets by maximizing growth in arrivals from those least affected by the crisis like Russia and China and also by focusing on the domestic market which resulted in a six percent increase in domestic travel," Durano's text message read.
“Cebu is fast opening up to the rest of the world. It is because the province has now more to offer in terms of tourism packages,” added Tourism Undersecretary Phineas Alburo in a separate interview.
According to Alburo, while Cebu used to be popular for its Magellan’s Cross and beach resorts, the tourism industry here has become more dynamic with new tour packages that include adventure tourism, sports tourism, shopping venues, more town festivals as seen during the Provincial Government-led Suroy-Suroy Sugbo, as well as more beach resort destinations in the northern and southern areas, apart from Mactan Island.
“These new activities encourage more foreigners, not from only the usual markets we get, but also those emerging markets that the DoT has tapped, especially China, India, Russia, and the Middle East,” said Alburo.
He said tourist arrivals from these new markets help “balance out” the decrease in figures coming from the top three travel markets.
In the same period of this year, the number of visitors to Cebu from Korea, Japan and the United States showed a decline, records from the DoT 7 showed.
The Koreans made up 27.83 percent of Cebu’s tourist market, followed by the Japanese at 21.38 percent and the Americans at 9.90 percent.

jsl_bxu1206 July 27th, 2009, 08:00 PM Cebu exporters to get German expertise in branding
By MALOU M. MOZO
July 27, 2009, 5:52pm
Cebu City – The German Development Service, a branding and marketing expert, will be assisting Cebu-based exporters on branding and marketing efforts to help them increase their chances in gaining global competitiveness.
PhilExport-Cebu, the business support organization for exporters in Central Visayas, announced the holding of a branding workshop on August 7.
The organization said the training program for Cebu’s main export sectors has been developed to make the concept of branding understandable and palpable to participants.
Sabine Schacknat, the Philexport consultant from the German organization says one does not need a lot of scientific explanations to grasp the essence of branding.
She said this “feasible and down-to-earth approach” combines vivid elucidation with a three-step workshop where the participants experience difficulties of mastering the initial phase of branding by applying it to their own industry sector.
“A brand is much more than a trademark or a product. It is about getting your target market to see your company as the only one that provides a solution to their problem. It is about customer trust and loyalty. It seems to have evolved as the most powerful strategic tool since the invention of the spreadsheet. Most of all, the brand value of a company can amount to more than half of its assets as for example in the case of “Coca Cola” and that makes branding a strategic tool to be taken very seriously,” Shacknat said.
In previous workshops, Abines said many participants had what he considers a “light-bulb-moment” regarding the definition of a brand.

jsl_bxu1206 July 27th, 2009, 11:40 PM Tomas wants Cebu City to ‘adopt’ Glo
Tuesday, July 28, 2009
IMPRESSIVE, straightforward and amusing were some of the words Cebu City officials used to describe President Arroyo’s State of the Nation Address (Sona).
Mayor Tomas Osmeña was so impressed by Arroyo’s achievement in keeping the inflation rate at its lowest, on average, since 1966, that he will ask the City Council today to pass a measure declaring Arroyo an adopted daughter of Cebu City.
“Let’s give credit where it’s due. We have the lowest inflation rate in recent history, I think that’s fantastic. Our economy was pretty well managed, considering what’s happening around the world. She did an excellent job,” Osmeña told Sun.Star Cebu.
While in the US for seven months during his chemotherapy, Osmeña said he saw how battered the US economy was, with banks folding up and the some of the biggest US companies declaring bankruptcy.
None of this happened in the Philippines even as the world’s strongest economies crumbled, he said.
“The President has been through low public ratings, maybe one of the most unpopular ratings I have seen, but she has done a lot for Cebu. That is why I’m going to ask the city council to grant her the status as an adopted daughter of the city in December, as our Christmas gift to her,” the mayor said.
The status is an expression of gratitude for decisions like taking her oath of office in Cebu City in 2004, building in Cebu City the first official residence of the President outside Luzon, and holding the Asean Summit in Cebu in 2007.
Although there was no categorical statement that she will step down from office in 2010, Osmeña said he is convinced she will do so.
Deputy House Speaker Raul del Mar (Cebu City, north district) lauded the president for a straightforward speech that set the record straight. Vice Mayor Michael Rama dared Arroyo’s critics to present their own date if they want to refute her report on the state of the country.
“Her straight to the point repartee was a sweet and polite revenge against her critics, tit for tat. But the delivery is very diplomatic, in a very statesmanlike manner,” he said.
Rama, who was at the Batasang Pambansa to listen to the President’s report, said that it was the most straightforward, candid and direct speech of Arroyo he has heard.
Councilor Sylvan Jakosalem, a godson and staunch ally of the President, said that as expected, many will question her opening statement that “a strong economy” is one way to describe the state of the nation.
“But the more interesting part of her speech was her attack on her critics, and how she got back at them. That was quite unexpected in its intensity but altogether actually true... And it was amusing how she teased her critics by saying she would stop down the podium, but not the presidency,” he said.
Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) past president Robert Go said Arroyo has done an “excellent” job in implementing fiscal reforms that helped soften the impact of the global financial crisis on the Philippine economy.
He said that to have the country’s economy stay afloat amid a global decline of economies is a “difficult thing to do.” He added that the unpopular decisions of the president, like the implementation of the expanded-value added tax (eVAT), have paid off.
Go, however, expressed doubts on the President’s stand that power rates will go down following the expiration of the purchased power adjustment (PPA) contract in one year.
Like Go, the president of the Filipino-Cebuano Business Club Inc. (FCBCI), Rey Calooy, said President Arroyo deserves to be given credit for a “job well done” in steering the country’s economy towards growth, despite the contraction of other Asian economies.
But despite the P165 billion worth of microfinance loans that the government has released to seven million entrepreneurs, Calooy said that many micro, small and medium entrepreneurs (MSME) still can’t feel the support of the government.
“Access to financial institutions is still difficult for MSMEs,” he said.
Cause-oriented groups marched from Colon St. to the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda to criticize Arroyo and to protest attempts to amend the Constitution.
Rev. Rey Gelloagan, spokesperson of Karapatan and the Promotion of Church People’s Response, said they tied yellow ribbons around their arms not just for former president Cory Aquino, who is suffering from cancer, but to set aflame the “people power spirit for a nation about to die.”
Youth groups like the party-list Kabataan, the College Editors’ Guild of the Philippines, the National Union of Students in the Philippines and the Students’ Alliance for National Democracy were also present.
Anakbayan’s Fr. Max Abalos said he wanted Arroyo to tell the public the real state of the nation.
Labor party-list group Partido ng Manggagawa spokesperson Dennis Derige said Arroyo’s Sona had “little relevance” to the lives of ordinary Filipinos. (LCR/DME/GPQ/EOB/OCP)

dodong July 27th, 2009, 11:50 PM i am also from USC.. although for me... sakit paminawon.. but lets us take it not with a grain of salt.. we will ask the current USC admin to look into the its administrative failures and check the curriculum, the competency of teachers etc.. USC during our time is usually having 90% plus percentage sa Nursing..they even had a 99% passing, just cant remember the year.. so perhaps the current administration in the college is incompetent.
Makauulaw kaayo nang 31%... Verallo of Bogo is even higher at 33%..
This is a wake up call sa USC Nursing Department and the USC Admin in itself.. i am sure, heads will roll.
makauulaw jud, bai. this is not fair to the alumni who tried to excel in their fields and protect the name of their alma mater. something must be done by usc to improve the performance of its nursing department.

SleMarKen July 28th, 2009, 04:42 AM Being one of the best school in the town means they have a very good educational system.
One of the best school gud sa Cebu, bisag naka pasar man lang kay kung ingun ana nga bagsak sa passing rate meaning it's not one of the best coz I believe, being the best means maayo sila sa tanan mapa specialty courses o dili. Na disappoint lang gyud ko coz Im proud of USC even if Im not from USC.
Henz July 28th, 2009, 04:55 AM correct..i agree with you... dapat consistent. kay whether we like it or not, mao baya na nakamahal sa tuition sad.. ang name sa school.

PINOYmeat July 28th, 2009, 07:06 AM makauulaw jud, bai. this is not fair to the alumni who tried to excel in their fields and protect the name of their alma mater. something must be done by usc to improve the performance of its nursing department.
i hope makapareho sa record sa usc pharmacy ang usc nursing. usc pharmacy is one of the best performing schools of pharmacy in the country along with ust, up and st. louis of baguio. pharmacy is not an easy course, its a lot harder than nursing but the rewards are great especially abroad. 10k dollars ang minimum per month, and nice thing is may fallback ka, you can open up a business, work with bfad or pdea and the hospitals are continually in need of pharmacists, unlike sa nurses nga gisarado na ang hiring kay taas ang waiting list, im speaking of course sa ospital na ako gitrabahoan.
like Southwestern before during thet 70's, 80's, and 90's almost always 100 % ila passing percentage, but during this decade nga modawat na silag daghang students just for the profits, ni down jud ila passing rate. there was even a year nga niabot ug 38 sections ang usa ka year level alone. and during 2006, 6000 plus ang population sa nursing sa SWU, ang UC is 5000 plus while ang UV is more than 3000 i think.
the result of this low passing rate is due to the volume of their students.
this low passing score of usc's nurses is a wake up call to the usc administration and all the college department heads and faculty that the university is getting more complacent with the standard of education within the system. with a dismal 31% passing rate is not in consonance with usc's new slogan as "the premiere university of the south".
usc was greatest when the administrators were the foreign svds. now that it has been run by local pinoy svds nahimo nasad nga local ang standard. you can still proudly say standard pero local na kaayo. its about time that they change the teaching strategy from a mere textbook learning to a more hands on-research oriented curriculum. kay when students do research, mobasa man gyud ka way beyond your textbooks.

Seriously, USC should look into this matter. Mora og ma-drag down gud ni ang USC nga reputation tungod ani.

CEBU, Philippines - Before the year ends, Cebuanos are set to experience that larger-than-life and ultimate movie experience as SM Cebu opens its IMAX Theater come December 2009.
To be housed inside the SM Cebu Cinema 4, this will be the first IMAX theater in Cebu and the third IMAX theater in the Philippines – the first opened at SM Mall of Asia and the second one most recently at SM North Edsa.
In an interview with The Freeman, IMAX Senior Vice President and Managing Director Don Savant revealed that they are excited to open IMAX in Cebu.
“Cebu is the second biggest city in the Philippines and so I’m expecting you guys would appreciate IMAX,” he said.
On December 18, 2009, SM City Cebu will launch its first IMAX Theater with Avatar 3D.
“SM Cebu IMAX will very much like be the ones here in Manila. We will retrofit the theater into IMAX style. We will increase the screen size floor to ceiling, making it closer to the audience. The images will be of higher resolution,” Savant shared.
Prices of the regular IMAX movie range from P400 to P600. However, IMAX 3D Digital Films are priced at P200 to P300.
“Prices of IMAX Cebu will be the same with Manila. But for those who can’t afford much, we have school bookings where students can watch our educational films at a lower price,” Savant said.
Major installations of the said theater will start on October.

Bomb threat grounds SilkAir MI 541 from Cebu to Singapore
By Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 28 July 2009 1627 hrs
SINGAPORE: Over 130 passengers and crew from a SilkAir flight have been evacuated following a bomb threat.
MI 541 was due to depart from the Philippines' Cebu airport at 1.30pm on Tuesday for Singapore.
But airport authorities received news of the suspected bomb minutes before take-off.
A hotline caller to Channel NewsAsia described seeing police surrounding the plane.
In a statement to Channel NewsAsia, SilkAir said all 127 passengers and seven crew members left the plane "in a calm and orderly manner", and are now in one of the boarding gatehold rooms at Cebu airport.
"We treat every incident seriously and will take all necessary measures to ensure that the safety and security of our passengers are not compromised," said a SilkAir spokesman.
The passengers have been served meals and refreshments and SilkAir said they are also being updated on the situation as and when there are new developments.
All baggage and cargo have also been offloaded and are in the process of another round of security checks. The plane has been moved to an isolation bay at the airport for police inspections.
The matter is currently being investigated.

Sorry but this is a haphazard generalization. It is also a racist view. By saying that USC was better before when it was still under the Germans, than compared today under Filipinos, that means USC has not churned quality students but garbage after the Germans left.
I beg to disagree. Being from USC myself, I know which colleges are performing well and those that aren't doing well. Dili pud baya tanan. I guess it would be safe to say that what you've said is true if you're in USC right now.
I teach at USC and I always strive hard to give my students the best. I also believe that most other teachers are also doing the same thing. Naay bati sa USC (just like in other schools) pero it should not be construed as the reality for the entire school. Luoya ba pud namo kung basura na lang ang among gipang-produce because that would mean basura pud ang mga teachers. :ohno:
Do visit us at USC so that we can show you our researches and see for yourself what we're doing with our students. What I know is that USC has the strongest research arm in Cebu right now and most academics (not all) you read or hear about in Cebu are affiliated with USC.
Thank you.

usc has not maintained its high academic standard throughout the years in all its colleges! is this true or false? we only knew that usc is high standard kay kasagaran ang ning eskuwela dinha may utok nga above average nang daan that technically its not attributed to the textbook learning and teaching styles dinha.
tell me exactly what type of research and how much of research work does an undergrad student do? magsige man lang ug malling, pasikat ug pahayhat sa kaasagaran dinha. pila ray mobasa ahead sa ilang professor.
speaking of the german svds, talagang may ibinobuga sila. they had the knowledge and expertise that made usc catapult to the top. kinshanglan the present administration, faculty, staff and student body must preserve and maintain that high standard of excellence grounded by the founding fathers.

don't want to add to the issue on USC kay di raba ko taga USC. but i hope
you also (both sides) take into account that ... in general ... nideteriorate jud
ang QUALITY of EDUCATION in the whole country. don't get me wrong there
are schools that excel in the past years, there are spots of remarkable gems
among the dreary landscape of schools, colleges, universities, and institutions
across the archipelago struggling to get better only to slide down the chart
as the years go by. i can say this because i'm a lot older than a lot of you
and i've been decades with the academe, always maintaining to teach at
least one subject each semester ever since i've started teaching in 1983.
and i've seen the decline.
so please be kinder a bit to your schools. they're just part of a whole
system of governance which prides itself with eloquent words but reveals
a trail of dismay resulting in blames and accusations among us.

bakasaurus July 28th, 2009, 07:24 PM hala..the best way is to do a survey ani aron mahusay ang panaglalis haha.
But in any case, there is also a human tendency to always see that small black dot in the middle of the clean white sheet of paper.
This has been proven sa daghan na studies sa neurology ug psychology. Hehe. Mention lang nako ha basin it applies here. Mas dali gyud para nato makit-an ang bati kaysa nindot. Pero that is just natural kay our brains must have evolved that way. The "negative bias" has helped us survive theatening situations for many generations of humans. Mao sab bitaw na ang bad news mas bug-at kaysa good news. It is easy to tell by tallying the articles in the news paper into good news or bad news. Usa pa, our brain is also inclined to make generalizations. That is a quick way to assess the situation man gud.
For those interested (hehehehe, anyone?) pwede mo maka read more about this here:
http://www.citizenwarrior.com/2007/06/brains-negative-bias.html
Ang ako lang point is, bisan pa ug statistically, mas daghan ug nagbinuotan nga Nars sa Middle East, mura og mas mucount ang mga nagbuhat ug bati.
And this does not only apply to the Nursing profession but to many other aspects of our society.
So, ang akoang bana2x lang is:
1. Somebody was making a social commentary about the situation in the arab countries. And I believe he/she only gave that comment because he was concerned about it. (And it is often that we don't look at the original motive of the statement, which is important). I felt that the poster was more of concerned about it, than he was trying to malign people. (and before everyone's pride got mixed in the arguments and the tone of the posts became something else)
2. Some people reacted, because they don't think it is accurate (and they are also probably right, kay wala man gyud nagsurvey, bisan unsaon pa ug lalis, puros ra ni bana2x, tinamban ug opinion or observation) Bisan unsaon ug balibali, WALAY EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE nga mas daghan ug Nars nga nagsideline og pagka pokpok. And add to this my contention earlier about our brains own tendencies to see more bad than good, and to generalize.
3. Walay magdaog ani hahaha. But I can only say that this isn't a hopeless world because there are people who still care about these things, about doing what's right and professional, and keeping the image of the Filipino workers...and on the other hand, about fairness and sense of justice. The worst thing, I believe is apathy. When people simply just don't care at all.
Which connects us to the other topic which is still about nurses and schools.
I think basin ug ni burst na ang nursing bubble. I have been expecting it, sa kadaghan sa nagnursing in the past few years. The demand for nurses will eventually determine the appropriate number of nursing students. Did it also occur to us all, nga some schools might have just made their nursing colleges as milking cows for the other programs of the university? Hehehe.
The number of students who wanted to take up nursing was so huge (the market!) that many universities haphazardly expanded their nursing colleges, and some actually sprouted out like mushrooms overnight. That may have resulted to the dismal performance of some universities. Ug dinhi pod musulod ang effects sa performance sa board, because it is also a feedback to this whole machinery that churns out nurses by the thousands in our country. So hopefully, those that performed so badly will shape up, because it is not good for their image after all.
maayomo July 28th, 2009, 07:27 PM usc has not maintained its high academic standard throughout the years in all its colleges! is this true or false? we only knew that usc is high standard kay kasagaran ang ning eskuwela dinha may utok nga above average nang daan that technically its not attributed to the textbook learning and teaching styles dinha.

Sir, clarify lang ko gamay, ha. Kung above average ang utok sa usa ka tawo, di ba he would opt for a school which he perceives could help nurture his "above average" utok? That goes for all the good schools, ha. Not only USC. Even if we say nga good reputation ra sa school iya gibayran, I'm pretty sure that that good reputation was earned somewhere along the school's history.
As for your statement nga ang mga students sige ra ug malling, pasikat, etc., di man siguro all the time naay strong negative correlation ang pagka-gara ug ang pagkamaayo ug academics sa isa ka student. When I was taking up Comsci, there was this group of "it" girls who had the most beautiful faces, bodies to die for, wore the nicest clothes, had healthy nightlives - the type of girls which an insecure person would love to hate and wish failing grades upon. But, surprise surprise, almost everyone in their group graduated with honors. Di man pud siguro tungod kay gibayran nila ang department, kay makita man sad jud sa tanan how they aced their written exams and participated well in discussions. When I shifted to Psychology, ingun ana gihapun ang nahitabo. The hottest girls were some of the most intelligent members of the batch. Ang mga lalaki sa uban department nga mga pa-cool kuno, way kunohay paki sa sinul-oban, unya gagmay ug grado, aw, nakuntento nalang sila nga maglaway, kay bisag unsaon nila ug pa-choy, wa man silay ikabuga kung pa-utokay na. Hehe.
Nag-ingun lang ko ani Sir ba, para fair pud. Because not all excellent students wear thick horn-rimmed glasses, braces, and bowties, spend their saturday nights reading a thick book and couldn't tell the difference between a SanMig Light and a Red Horse. :)
jsl_bxu1206 July 28th, 2009, 07:49 PM CCCI seeks transparency from Big Three
By Ehda M. Dagooc Updated July 29, 2009 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - As the joint tasked force of the Department of Justice and the Department of Energy sets the clarificatory hearing against the three giant oil companies this Friday in Cebu, the business sector is calling on the big three to open their books for transparency.
In a press conference yesterday, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Samuel Chioson reiterated the query of businessmen as to why Cebu has the most expensive fuel compared to the rest of the country.
Based on a survey conducted by CCCI, fuel prices in Cebu is higher by an average of P6 to P7 pesos compared to prices in Manila, and in neighboring cities in Visayas like Iloilo and Bacolod.
While in Mindanao, wherein logistic expenses are expected to be more expensive because of nautical distance compared to Cebu, price of diesel fuel for instance in Davao is lower by at least P2.50.
According to Chioson the business sector is not convinced or satisfied with the reasons given by the oil giants, who earlier said that the high fuel prices in Cebu is caused by competition, logistic expenses and volatile exchange rate.
“We are also businessmen. We also don’t want them [big three oil players] to lose, but we want to know, what are their basis of computation why Cebu fuel prices are higher than other big cities in the Philippines, “said CCCI trustee Felix Taguiam.
The chamber claimed that despite the big oil firms’ denial on the alleged “cartel”, Chioson said the business sector is still convinced that the unified higher price of fuel in Cebu by big oil players is an indication that there really is a “cartel.”
Chioson said because of this “unexplained” high fuel prices in Cebu, it is not only the business sector that is affected, but more importantly, it is hurting the daily income of over 12 thousand public utility vehicle (PUJ) drivers, and more than five thousand taxi drivers, including “habal-habal”, and tricyle drivers.
The jacked up price of fuel in Metro Cebu has deprived a jeepney driver for instance a total of P10,500 income a month, this additional income could already send two children to college, with books and allowance expenses.
Based on an average P5 difference of price compared to other cities, it could already provide an additional daily income for PUJ drivers of at least P350 in a 70-liter fuel consumption a day.
The chamber is using its network in other cities to compare the actual prices of fuel by these three big oil firms, Caltex, Petron and Shell, with the actual price in Cebu City.
This unreasonable high price of fuel in Cebu, started in the first half of 2008, when the world fuel market experienced fluctuation of prices.
CCCI, together with five other business chambers in Cebu, namely Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mactan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, PhilExport, and Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (Cebu), are supporting the Provincial Government in filing a case against these big three oil players.
This case is deemed as the landmark case after the Oil Deregulation Law was implemented few years back.
The clarificatory hearing is in connection with the preliminary investigation of the complaint filed by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia against Petron Corporation, Chevron Philippines, Inc. and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, Inc.
The Cebu provincial government had filed an omnibus motion requesting said Task Force to set the date of the clarificatory hearing and to hold the hearing at the Central Command (Centcom) in Barangay Apas, Cebu.
From the comparative price watch conducted by provincial technical personnel, it was found out that the prevailing price of diesel sold in Manila by Shell, Petron and Chevron is P25.25 per liter compared to P31.56 in Cebu.
“We are not asking them to match with Metro Manila prices, but we are only asking for transparency and explain why Cebu fuel prices are expensive,” Chioson said.
The DoE-DOJ Task Force on Oil Deregulation is mandated by law to file criminal and administrative charges against those that may be found liable for irregularities in the selling and pricing of oil.
The case will cite violation of the Oil Deregulation Act which comes with a fine of P250,000 to P500,000 and a two-year jail term.

bakasaurus July 28th, 2009, 07:49 PM Sir, clarify lang ko gamay, ha.
hehehe. Fair enough bai. And I would agree to this. Ang mga bright daw, makaafford man daw mag malling2x, jamming2x ug inum2x unya okay gyapon ang grades. Asa man ni sila nga mga classmates nimo ron bai? Naa pa kay contact nila?:lol:hahaha. Naay laing motive...
Which goes back to our brain's tendency to generalize lagi!

Gwapa na, dato pa. Bright pa jud. Naminyo lang ug, uhm, buotan. Hahaha.
Ahak, padung na ni OT storyaa. Hahahahaha...
jameslab8470 July 29th, 2009, 06:53 AM Sorry but this is a haphazard generalization.
Thank you.
Very well said! Hilom lang unta ko ani na issue. Pero I agree with you bai.
federalist July 29th, 2009, 09:50 AM usa ray solution ana, di lang USC apil napud laing schools, kung gusto jud sila motaas ilang quality of education ilang limitahan ang number of students dawaton ug e follow ang screening process.
like Velez, before 150 ra ang students in each year level, then ni 200 i dont know if pila na ron pero for sure wa jud moabot ug 1000 ang ila first year siguro(hope wa ko masayop)
like Normal also gamay ra jud dawaton para incoming first year ug ang CCMC 150 ra. in that way ma maintain jud ang quality of education.

THE Aboitiz sports field will formally launch its international standard football field during the opening of the 12th season of the Aboitiz Football Cup on Aug. 9.
The Aboitiz sports field was constructed last year and was used mostly for local competitions. Now the multi-purpose field has a Fifa-standard field measuring 120-meter by 90m.
It also houses two kiddies’ fields that are 60m by 40m. These fields are designed for the 12-Under division and lower age divisions.
The field is also open for use for field sports such as rugby, flag football, baseball, softball, volleyball and frisbee.
“After the launching of the sports field, the Cebu Football Association (CFA) will open the 12th Aboitiz Cup,” said CFA board member Rachel Genco in a press conference
yesterday at the Park Mall.
The start of the 12th season of the Aboitiz Football Cup will be marked by a special match between the RP National Under-14 football squad and the Cebu selection.
The RP Under-14 squad is the same team that was denied playtime by the Asian Youth Games organizers last month in Singapore after one of its players got infected with Influenza A (H1N1) virus.
Regular games of the competition will follow after the exhibition.
The CFA also assured that this year’s tournament will be bigger and better than last year because of the addition of Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football squads—the University of San Jose Recoletos, University of the Visayas, University of San Carlos, University of Cebu and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation.
CFA official Adonis Quitoy said they have asked for permission from Cesafi through commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy and are now working on a schedule so that Cesafi teams can join.
“We have talked to Tiukinhoy and we are coordinating with him so the Cesafi teams can play in the Aboitiz Cup,” said Quitoy.
The Aboitiz Sports Field is opened to the public from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.
The rates are P550 for day use and P2,200 for night use.

SM Group setting up subsidiary for conventions, events business
Written by Miguel R. Camus / Reporter
Tuesday, 28 July 2009 21:41
THE SM Group is forming a separate company for its convention center operations, which the conglomerate plans to fold into its newest core business in hotels and entertainment.
According to incorporation papers approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission dated July 23, the new company—SMX Convention Specialists Corp. (SMX Corp.)—will primarily be involved in the business of operating conventions, trade congresses, exhibitions, fairs and any kind of special event such as corporate affairs, banquets, inaugurations and fashion shows.
In a telephone interview, SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) vice president for investor relations Cora Guidote said the move is in line with the firm’s business restructuring efforts.
“[SMX Corp.] will be made into a subsidiary of the hotels division. We plan to put all our convention center businesses under SM Hotels Corp., our fifth core business,” said the company executive.
She said the group’s convention center business—currently represented by the P1.8-billion SMX Convention Center near the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City—is being managed by its property unit SM Land Inc.
Incorporators of the new firm include heirs of retail tycoon Henry Sy, namely, Elizabeth T. Sy, Henry T. Sy Jr., Harley T. Sy as well as top company executives Jose T. Sio and Merril F. Yu.
The SMX Center served over 750,000 delegates in various events last year, pointing to the large demand for this type of development. As such, the group is expanding this business with the planned construction of a similar structure near the SM City Cebu mall.
“This will become like a little SMX,” SM Prime Holdings Inc. vice president Marissa Fernan said earlier.
Guidote said the firm is still in the planning stage with its Cebu project, noting that construction has yet to begin.
The SM Group earlier said it plans to become one of the leading players in the hotel and entertainment sector, an industry expected to complement its mall operations. By end-2009, the company will have 36 shopping centers in the country.
The group expects to open this year the P2.6-billion Radission Hotel in Cebu City near its SM mall. Carlson Hotels Worldwide–Asia will manage the Cebu Radisson as well as two other hotels currently being constructed within the SM Mall of Asia complex, namely, The Regent Manila Bay and Radisson Manila Bay. The hotels are worth a combined P2.4 billion.
The company also announced it is building several smaller hotels which will cater to businessmen near select SM shopping malls. The target is to put up 14 such hotels, each with 50 to 150 rooms, over the next five years.

Seriously, USC should look into this matter. Mora og ma-drag down gud ni ang USC nga reputation tungod ani.
agree on both points! (w/ more emphasis on the first one haha!)
mibagting lang akong dunggan sa usa ka comment regarding this whole usc nursing thing and how someone is trying to degrade usc now that it's being run by filipinos...
i also stand by to one of the more 'intellectual' opinion of another poster here, that there's something wrong w/ the WHOLE educational system in our country and not just with USC.
first and foremost its unfair to judge usc as a whole just because its nursing program sucked big time. i am an engineering graduate and i myself can prove that its totally the opposite for the college of engineering...every year at least one of the departments in the COE have topnothers, even every board exam w/c happens twice a year at that. this also aplplies to pharmacy, caccountancy, law etc etc....
yes there is something wrong with the usc college of nursing, i personally think that this is all about kwarta...moolah...kadaghan ra estudyante sa nursing and they think that if they'd be strict, there are a lot more skuls na pwede kabalhinan...meaning the management wasnt really confident that they'd retain their nursing students if they failed nursing and transfer to other courses in usc.
its all about integrity and money...in any way they've got to choose..

Environmental lawyers, pollution watchdog urge scrapping of coal-ash dumpsite deal in S. Cebu (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/regions/13847-environmental-lawyers-pollution-watchdog-urge-scrapping-of-coal-ash-dumpsite-deal-in-s-cebu.html)
ENVIRONMENTAL lawyers in Cebu were joined by a pollution watchdog in calling for the scrapping of the agreement between the Cebu provincial government and the Korea Electric Power (Kepco)–SPC Power Corp. to set up a coal-ash dumpsite at the coast of Naga town in southern Cebu.
Environmental lawyer Gloria Estenzo-Ramos told the BusinessMirror that they are ready to present their case to Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia regarding the harmful effects of coal ash to the marine environment and the people of Naga.
She also expressed concern on the seeming steadfastness of the provincial government with the Kepco agreement without listening to the sides of environmental advocates.
“It seems the provincial government is now becoming the defender of Kepco,” Ramos said. “It is highly irregular for a regulator [Cebu province] to enter into an economic deal with a regulatee [Kepco-SPC].”
Under the deal, the provincial government will buy the beachfront property and make it a dumpsite for Kepco-SPC. The company will pay $1 million to the province.
The Quezon City-based EcoWaste Coalition joined Ramos in expressing their “profound objection” against the planned dumping of coal ash and said the costs to the environment and public health could be more.
“In the greater interest of human and ecological health, we urge the government of Cebu to apply the precautionary principle, reconsider its coal-ash deal with Kepco, and prevent a potential chemical crisis that might even cost more than the $1 million promised by the company,” Manny Calonzo, president of the EcoWaste, wrote in his letter.
Kepco-SPC is building a 200-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Naga scheduled for completion in 2011.
Greenpeace Southeast Asia also wrote the governor on its opposition to the power plant and the coal-ash dumpiste.
Amalie Conchelle Hamoy-Obusan, climate and energy campaigner for Greenpeace, said Cebu must look toward renewable and clean-energy sources to power its industries.
“The provincial government of Cebu [must] safeguard the future of its people and leave coal behind. The cost to the climate, the environment and the people is much too high. Cebu simply cannot afford to continue with it,” Hamoy-Obusan’s letter read.
The EcoWaste Coalition pointed out that coal-combustion byproducts are not exactly benign waste as these can contain dangerous levels of harmful chemicals associated with cancer and noncancer risks such as arsenic, boron, cadmium, cobalt, lead, mercury, molybdenum, nitrates/nitrites and selenium.
“We urge the government of Cebu to learn from the unfolding health and environmental problems in the US arising from toxic releases from coal-combustion waste ponds, pits, dumpsites and landfills, some of which have been declared ‘superfund’ sites or toxic-waste sites requiring very costly cleanups,” Calonzo added.
The group cited a Greenpeace Southeast Asia study of ash samples from the coal-fired power plant of the National Power Corp. in Calaca, Batangas, that tested positive with mercury, a toxic metal.
In their letter to the Cebu officials, the EcoWaste Coalition questioned the capability of the provincial and city authorities to monitor, regulate and mitigate the adverse effects of coal-ash dumping to ensure the long-term health and safety of the Cebuanos, the water supplies and the marine resources.
Citing a report released in March 2009 by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the EcoWaste Coalition emphasized that the disposal of coal ash, especially in unlined ponds, results in alarmingly high risks of cancer and diseases of the heart, lung, liver, stomach and other organs and can seriously harm aquatic ecosystems and wildlife near disposal sites.
In the same report, the EPA warned that contamination from coal-ash ponds will not peak until about 78 to 105 years after waste is dumped, while peak exposure from landfills may occur after even longer periods of time.

zidlakan July 30th, 2009, 01:51 AM ^ Cordova is a separate island, right? :dunno:hehehe. Technically, not really bai Sinj. What separates Lapu-Lapu and Cordova is a very very narrow and shallow marsh/mangrove channel nga gitawag nila ug Suba pero dili gyud baya suba. Hehe. So that doesn't make Cordova a separate island.yes, Cordova is a separate island but still part of Lapu-lapu City. Originally Cordova is not part of Mactan Island. they are connected with a small bridge.
cordova is a separate municipality but IS a part of mactan island. mactan
island is composed of two local government units (LGUs) - lapu-lapu city and
cordova municipality. both also have other small islands as part of their
territory.
the whole city of lapu-lapu is composed of a major portion of mactan island,
the whole of olango, and some smaller islands. olango, if i'm not mistaken
has three barangays which are part of lapu-lapu.
the funny thing is, olango, which is a separate island, is part of lapu-lapu
city while cordova, which is on the same island as lapu-lapu, is not, and is
a separate municipality. how that happened reveals the comedy of our
political development.
bakasaurus July 30th, 2009, 03:25 AM hehehe. sakto..and if i remember correctly, i think 3 of the islands in the olango group are part of cordova..one is hilutungan, and I forgot the other 2. And all the other barangays and islands are under the Lapu-Lapu jurisdiction.

oh yes, the olango island is a very rich tropical biodiversity and marine resource,
composed of at least 15 islands and islets. of these, excluding olango island

"I never expressed the desire to extend myself beyond my term. Many of those who accuse me of it tried to cling like nails to their posts (Special Quote for the entire oppositions, especially to Jinggoy, Chiz, Roxas, Cayetano, and other opposing senators)….
I am accused of misgovernance. Many of those who accuse me of it left me the problem of their misgovernance to solve. And we did it…. (Special quote for the past presidents, emphasizing most of it to Ramos and Erap.) -- i think this is more pointing to her former cabinet secretaries who abandoned their posts and are now her staunch critics as well.
I am falsely accused, without proof, of using my office for personal profit. Many of those who accuse me of it have lifestyles and spending habits that make them walking proofs of that crime….(daghay naigo ani,,)

The noisiest critics of constitutional reform tirelessly and shamelessly attempted Cha-Cha when they thought they could take advantage of a shift in the form of government. Now that they feel they cannot benefit from it, they oppose it.(this is for Jose de Venecia). -- and FVR too

Ang_Bantayanon July 30th, 2009, 05:14 AM usc has not maintained its high academic standard throughout the years in all its colleges! is this true or false? we only knew that usc is high standard kay kasagaran ang ning eskuwela dinha may utok nga above average nang daan that technically its not attributed to the textbook learning and teaching styles dinha.
tell me exactly what type of research and how much of research work does an undergrad student do? magsige man lang ug malling, pasikat ug pahayhat sa kaasagaran dinha. pila ray mobasa ahead sa ilang professor.
speaking of the german svds, talagang may ibinobuga sila. they had the knowledge and expertise that made usc catapult to the top. kinshanglan the present administration, faculty, staff and student body must preserve and maintain that high standard of excellence grounded by the founding fathers.
I don't really know where you're coming from but I do hope you are attuned to reality or at least confident of your facts about USC. Your statements here in this forum can only be taken as Gospel-truth if you're familiar how things are in USC. I find it a useless exercise to enlighten someone on an issue which he does not really know much about.
Anyway, granting that our students go to the malls to make "pasikat ug pahayhat," it is the students' look out, and not that of the school. I guess that's a wrong analogy. Besides, aren't there also an equal number of students from other schools who instead of reading their books, go malling and all?
USC did well under the Germans, yes, I agree with you but to say that USC has declined now under Filipino SVDs, is another wrong analogy. By praising the Germans and criticising the Filipinos, is just like saying that ALL Filipinos are bird-brained, compared to foreigners. :ohno: So, my question is, what does that make you? Ikaw, dili ka malain ana? Paet.
Thank you.
Zuburbia July 30th, 2009, 06:42 AM Basta for me i love USC! hahaha! and dont you know by going out to malling or even drinking with buddies, and hanging out meeting people, would also teach you other things that your school doesnt teach? its bout the biggest school, the real world, and learning in how to deal with society, and seeing personally its unpretentious state! hahaha!

hmmmm ... cordova did not become a part of cebu city. wala pa. padung
pa, he he he, if things go right.
cordova was part of opon then. but in 1863, it separated. i got this from
the municipality's official website: http://www.cordova.gov.ph.
if it's okay, i'll reprint it here:
History of Cordova
CORDOVA is NOT the original name of the territory it represents. NOT even the Spanish name: CORDOBA. Its territory comprises the original barrios (“balangays” in Cebuano) of Gabi, Day-as, and Pilipul (actually, Pilipog) – all of which are located in the southeastern tip of Mactan Island.
When Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebu on April 17, 1521, Mactan Island did not have a singular and unitary government.[1] It was divided into barrios called BALANGAYS like Mactan, Pusok, Pajo, Agus, Pajac, Maribago, Gun-ob, Basak, Magondong, Suba-Basbas, Kalawisan, Babag, Pilipog, Day-as, and Gabi.
Lapu-lapu was NOT the over-all ruler of the entire Mactan Island. He established alliances with the various chieftains in the different balangays like Bali-Alho, Bugto Pasan, Sampong Baha, and Magtawnas. He was lucky to have gained their support. Collectively, they fought Magellan who invaded Lapu-lapu’s MACTAN (a balangay headed by him).
Lapu-lapu’s victory in his balangay was not his alone. It was the triumph of all the chiefs of all the balangays in the Island of Mactan who helped him.
Thus, when Miguel Lopez de Legaspi arrived in Cebu on April 27, 1565, he was not resisted by Lapu-lapu in Mactan who was no longer around. He was defied by KING DAGAMI of Gabi (now part of CORDOVA) who conducted a guerilla warfare against him.
It was not until Spain successfully dominated the entire Philippine Archipelago that Mactan Island obtained a unitary government with OPON as its seat. Since then, all the balangays in the Island were ruled by Spain through OPON.
CORDOBA (the name given before 1913) did not exist until May 22, 1863 when Governor-General Rafael Echague decreed that the balangays of Gabi, Day-as, and Pilipul (actually, Pilipog) would be joined into one town named CORDOBA – to be separated from Opon. What was requested by the residents then, as the town’s name, was DAY-AS which means “to adventure or dare”. Among the reasons for secession from the Municipality of Opon was that the residents of Day-as found it difficult to comply with their duties and obligations to the Church and the Municipality due to distance and the absence of accessible roads.
It was the parish priest of the Municipality of Opon, Padre Simon Aguirre[2], who encouraged the residents of Day-as headed by Claudio Dico to pass a Resolution requesting the conversion of balangay Day-as and Pilipog and Gabi into a Municipality. But the Spanish Governor-General in Manila consulted the Recollect priests (who took charge of the Visayan areas). The latter opposed the move because the Chapel in Day-as then was made of bamboo and nipa only which the Recollects found to be unfit for a town Church. At that time, the place where the Church stood had no drinking water, no farm and no plants.
Nevertheless, the people of the three barrios persisted and aired their request to the Bishop of Cebu who eventually acceded and who also agreed to put the new town under the charge of the secular priests. Hence, after a third petition, the request was granted.
On May 22, 1863, Governor General Rafael Echague created a new town comprised by the barrios of Gabi, Day-as and Pilipul. He chose the name CORDOBA which means “stark nakedness and bare”. (Spain, Mexico and Argentina have cities named CORDOBA too). Notwithstanding the ugly reference, the new town thrived on Gabi plants and Pilipog (a kind of coconut tree) and its foreshore area (now measured to be almost 4,000 hectares) and the adventurous character of the people especially those from Day-as (the name retained for its original “balangay”).
In 1864, the townspeople of Cordoba constructed a new Catholic Church in honor of its patron saint, St. Roque of Montpeller, France. (At that time, leprosy in Cordoba was prevalent). Its construction was supervised by Rev. Fr. Jose Salazar, OAR. The new independent parish of Cordoba was finally established on October 8, 1864. Inside the new church, on October 10, 1864 Fr. Salazar solemnized the first Catholic marriage. Newlyweds were Eleuterio Casquejo and Lorenza Escasenas.
On October 13, 1864 the first death under the new Church was registered. The deceased was Pedro Casquejo, son of Crisanto Casquejo and Feliciana Sumalinog.
The first baptism of six (6) children was done on October 15, 1864 to wit:: Calixto Pacaldo, Pilar Silab, Brigido Inoc, Bruna Digamo, Francisca Bentulan, and Luisa Terol.
But the parochial convent was started only in 1891-1893 during the time of Father Jose Medina. It was completed in 1898 under Father Jose Bastan.
In 1898 when Andres Bonifacio revolted against Spain, Cordoba’s Directorcillo, Juan Nuñez (aided by Pablo Biongcog), was the distributor of Bonifacio’s cedulas to Cordova residents. He was caught. Nuñez and Biongcog admitted full responsibility for their activities and saved no less than 40 Cordoba residents from execution. Only they got executed on October 15, 1898.
Juan Nuñez was Cordoba’s hero in the 1898 Philippine Revolution together with Biongcog.
Cordoba’s independence starting 1864 was short-lived. When the Americans took over in 1898, they re-annexed Cordoba to Opon thinking that Cordoba could not survive on its own.
The last set of Cordoba officials in 1898, prior to the loss of Cordoba’s personality, was headed by Cecilio Alvares as the Capitan Municipal, Florentino Tiro as the Jues de Pas, Benita Jumao-as as the Maestra de Niñas, and Magdaleno Francisco as the Maestro de Niños.
After the Philippine-American War when the Philippines was finally subdued by the Americans, elections for officials took place again. On August 3, 1901, per Order of Governor Julio Llorente of Cebu, an election for Municipal President was held in Cordoba. Carlos Sumalinog won the election by viva voce. His term did not last long, however. He was killed by the Americans. He possessed fake cedulas and was suspected of being the key man to the underground movement against the Americans.
The sad incident made Cordoba lose its representation in the Provincial Assembly. It made Cordoba operate like a barrio since it had no more voice in the Provincial Assembly.
Despite the absence of Cordoba’s representation in the Provincial Assembly, the Provincial Board passed an Ordinance in 1901 dividing Cordoba into the barrios of Poblacion, Buagsong, Day-as, Gabi, Ibabao, Catarman and Cogon.
On April 21, 1902, Martin Jumao-as was chosen and admitted as representative of Cordoba to the Provincial Assembly and on January 18, 1903, Bernardo Nuñez represented Cordoba.
Efforts to regain independence were thereupon exerted by Cordoba leaders led by those who were designated as Cabeza de Barangays, one after another: Capitan Benedicto Wahing, Capitan Claudio Dico, Capitan Rufino Bentulan, Capitan Hilario Potot, Capitan Carlos Sanchez, Capitan Carlos Sumalinog, Capitan Juan Jumao-as and Capitan Martin Jumao-as.
The efforts bore fruits thanks to the exemplary performance of Bernardo Nuñez (son of 1898 hero Juan Nuñez) who petitioned the Philippine Assembly for CORDOBA’s independence. The Assembly Speaker then was SERGIO OSMEÑA, SR.
On December 17, 1912 Interim US Governor-General Newton W. Gilbert issued an ORDEN EJECUTIVA NUMERO 96 recreating the new town but changing letter “B” to letter “V” to spell CORDOVA, effective January 1, 1913. Thus, CORDOVA became a separate municipality again with Bernardo Nuñez as its first Municipal President and Lucas Jumao-as as its Vice-President.

I always hoped history will be taught like this. One should learn about the history of one's own place before any others'. Wala man ta mitunga ug kalit. Everyone might feel a little more sense of patriotism if we knew the local history. These are our ancestors we are talking about after all. Ang mga apelyido bitaw nga gipangnganlan dha, mga taga Opon ug Cordova gyud intawon.
Ang Opon kaha, hehehe. I'd sure like to trace back my roots. My great grandfather was barangay captain of Buaya or Ibo. Hehehe.Basin gani kaliwat gyud mi ni Lapu-Lapu. Nyeehehehe.
Pero enough of those ramblings. Hehe.
Ang akoa lang ba, at least, in the history textbooks that we use in the schools, starring man gihapon ang akoang isla, ug Cebu, my home province. Pero unsaon na lang ang uban nga lugar no, nga wala gyud intawn na mention sa mga history books sa DepEd?
Maybe, this is one of the reasons nganong Cebuanos have a strong sense of pride. Kay we at least, compared sa uban nga probinsya, we know what happened in the past, what role we have played in our country's history. Kumbaga, by learning about these things as early as in elementary school, the seeds of Cebuano pride have been planted. We know that we mattered and thus, we have a strong sense of identity. To borrow from the book ba, naa tay pride of place.
Again, unsaon na lang sa uban na provinces? Tingali, this is the key to that. That their local history should be taught early on. So they would also grow up bearing that sense of belongingness, sense of ownership of their home province.
When we feel we own our place, we do our best. This brings up the best in the people. Sense of unity and community will follow suit.
What do you think mga bai?

Bridges Town Square set to open by yearend (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=486888&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
Philstar Online
Updated July 15, 2009 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines – Banking on the strong potentials of Mandaue City as one of the fastest growing population centers in the province, a new player in Cebu’s real estate sector is set to open its first-ever commercial project dubbed as Bridges Town Square by the last quarter of this year.
Vivace Development Corp. chairman Eduardo Alegrado said they are optimistic that this venture will become another tourism destination in Cebu.
Vivace Development Corp. is a sister company of holding firm ECA Holdings Corp., the umbrella company of export manufacturers Wicker and Vine Inc. and Ambiente Designs International.
Alegrado said that they have decided to develop their two-hectare property in Plaridel Street, Alang-alang, Mandaue City which formerly accommodated their two furniture factories after the area has developed into a bustling thoroughfare.
The location in Plaridel Street currently serves traffic flowing to and from the North, to and from the two Mandaue- Mactan bridges, to and from the Cebu Reclamation Area and the South Road properties at the further end.
The street is also positioned to be a vital link to the North of Cebu via the Coastal Road project that will be linking Mandaue with the town of Liloan set to be open to traffic by the end of the year.
“My family’s business has been operating in Mandaue City for more than three decades now. The dramatic developments in the make up of this section of Mandaue have rendered presence of our factory there somewhat irrelevant, if not impractical. The changes made our place very viable for commercial exploitation at the present time so we have decided to change its use,” said Alegrado.
Right now, their furniture manufacturing operations have been transferred to a modern facility in Tingub, Mandaue transforming the old factory site in Plaridel into a commercial destination.
He said that Bridges Town Center was conceived to become a food and lifestyle destination designed to serve the needs of both local and foreign tourists.
“Our vision is to put together the convenience of shopping, dining and entertainment and to give people and visitors from the cities, provinces or other countries the best value for their money in a no non-sense, pleasant and safe environment,” said Alegrado.
He said that after marketing the concept for a month, their vision is also shared by several of their key locators which have responded positively to their development.
Bridges Town Center will house a large wholesale section composed mainly of veteran wholesalers in Carbon which will be called “Kumprahan” which measures 3, 500 square meters.
“With this in place, it will then be easier and very convenient for nearby resorts, hotels, small retailers or sari-sari store owners and regular grocery shoppers to enjoy great value at lower prices less the hassles and traffic congestion associated with most of our major city public markets,” said Alegrado.
It will also feature a unique seafood restaurant with a beach theme ambiance that will be owned and operated by the developers themselves which will be called as the Coconut Grove Seafood Restaurant.
Aside from these anchor stores, the Bridges Town Center will also house the Tourist Zone that will accommodate merchant locators that cater to the needs and preferences of both domestic and foreign tourists such as warehouse stores with furniture displays, hardware shops, outdoor adventure stores and there will also be a so-called Lifestyle Rows which will be consist of bars, entertainment establishments, fast food chains, coffee shops and restaurants.
Because of the slowdown in the export industry, Alegrado said that this particular business venture is also their way of diversifying their company operations to “ride with the tides” during these times of economic crisis.
“It actually takes confidence to pour in money at this time but we are quite confident that it will succeed. We have thought of this development even before the crisis started but we are glad to have done it more so with this crisis to also have a better use of our properties,” said Alegrado. — Rhia de Pablo

To do this, Orchard will offer promotional room rates to guests starting Wednesday until September, said hotel operations chief Antoniete Bacus.
The hotel is targeting an occupancy rate of more than 50 percent this year.
“The way things are going, we are optimistic (about our operations). Even before we soft-opened, potential clients have been making ocular visits; we have also received numerous inquiries about the hotel,” Bacus said.
She added that The Orchard is urging local and foreign visitors in Cebu, as well as travel agents, to try out its facilities.
As it is still in soft-opening stage, The Orchard maintains a staff of 25 people.
The hotel, which was completed after more than a year of construction, has two ballroom type function rooms that can house 150 persons. Another function room, which
is still being constructed, will accommodate more than 300 persons.
All of its rooms are equipped with various amenities, including LCD cable TV, mini-bar, WiFi Internet access, IDD/NDD telephone system, hot and cold shower, and in-room safety deposit box, among others. Its suite rooms are also equipped with mini-kitchen and Jacuzzi.
Bacus said that part of the hotel’s plan is to expand at the back of the present building to include more rooms, a swimming pool, a garden, and an al fresco dining restaurant.
“The expansion would depend on how present hotel operations.
When that will be materialized, we will be offering more or less 150 to 200 rooms total,” she said.
At present, The Orchard is intensively promoting its services and facilities through media ads and partnering with taxi drivers.

This is very sad, but in my travels, I have seen scenes close to this in many, many places. I had my camera with me on several occasions, and I have mixed emotions about choosing not to take photos.
We all know why this individual chooses this spot to lie down...
The most pathetic, sad image I will ever have is an old "bum" I came across on one of the sidestreets of Paris, the famous "City of Lights". And I'll never forget the crowd I came across in Busan, standing around an ooviously very drunk, tragic soul lying across a sidewalk. Two old homeless "twin sisters" in Grand Central Station, NY, wearing identical torn and tattered long coats. On and on...
Whatever, this is a powerful photo.
crlazlo3 July 31st, 2009, 10:17 PM Beautiful art work
I went "wow" when I saw this photo. As an artist/craftsperson from my life before "settling down, getting a 'job' and raising a family", I was very impressed. An awsome, wonderful creation - from a green plastic pop bottle! And thank you for uploading the link as well. Quote from that link:
"Later, while waiting for our bus back home to Dumaguete, I could not help but just stare and be mesmerized by the object I was holding. I was in awe at the skill of the prisoner who crafted the finely detailed tree. The fact that there were 4 or 5 other vendors plying the street selling the same item did not diminish my wonderment."

bakasaurus August 1st, 2009, 03:46 AM Lapu City may sue Gov’t. to stop tourism law effects
LAPU-LAPU City plans to file a suit to stop the National Government from implementing Republic Act (RA) 9593, otherwise known as the Tourism Act of 2008.
It said the law, which it also described as unconstitutional, threatens to erode the income and authority of local government units (LGU).
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
The City plans to send someone to help draft the law’s implementing rules and regulations, which is due on Nov. 10, to ensure the City’s interest is protected.
“We are in imminent danger of calamity. We must have a think-tank in our two phases of actions,” Vice Mayor Mario Amores said.
He said there should be a balance in the recommendatory power given to LGUs and a private entity in declaring areas as tourism enterprise zones (TEZ). He said this threatens the LGU’s discretionary power over its territory.
City officials also criticized the provision that empowers the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) to approve the development plan for a TEZ, without which a TEZ cannot be established.
The LGU will end up losing income because a company within the TEZ will enjoy exemptions from local taxes, although it still has to pay real property tax, Lapu-Lapu officials said.
“We have to file a suit against this law for being unconstitutional as it is contradictory to the provisions of the Local Government Code that gives the LGUs autonomy to tax,” City Councilor Eduardo Cuizon said.
RA 9593 declares “tourism as an indispensable element of the national economy and an industry of national interest and importance, which much be harnessed as an engine of socio-economic growth and cultural affirmation to generate investment, foreign exchange and employment.”
Lapu-Lapu City, home to an international airport and resort-hotels, is a tourism hub in Central Visayas.
RA 9593 also seeks to create a Tourism Promotions Board, which will have a budget of P500,000 a year for the first five years of operation.
“The TEZ will shrink our territory if not eradicate us. It really poses a lot of threats to the stability of the city, including a reduction of its revenue,” said Councilor Damian Gomez, finance committee chairman.
He said the City has long been deprived of considerable income from a portion of its territory occupied by the Mactan Economic Zone. With TEZ, the situation will only get worse, he said.
“We might wake up someday without a territory and nothing to collect taxes from if we allow this Act to go on,” Gomez said. (AIV)
bakasaurus August 1st, 2009, 03:49 AM Mayor Osmeña makes fun of ‘Gwen College’
STUDENTS of a proposed college named after Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia may have to attend underwater classes with the Capitol’s purchase of allegedly submerged land, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said yesterday.
Osmeña made fun of the proposal for a Cebu Government World-class Education Novelty College or Cebu Gwen College in Naga and the purchase of the 25-hectare Balili Property also in Naga.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
Two and two
“I’m just putting two and two together. They will build in Naga that Gwen College and they bought a submerged property in Naga so maybe the school will be underwater.
The Province will be a world record holder, I’m looking forward to the first college that’s underwater,” Osmeña told Sun.Star Cebu.
“But the problem is, I’m worried that all the students will be fishers. Now I’m beginning to understand the meaning of school of fish... That’s why I said she (governor) doesn’t care for the youth. She’s more concerned about other things like the CICC (Cebu International Convention Center),” Osmeña said.
At the Capitol, consultant Rory Jon Sepulveda said Osmeña need not worry about the proposed college.
“Rest assured they won’t fish on city streets that are underwater every time it rains. On second thought, they may be of help to fish out the tons of garbage floating everywhere and blocking the drains. The city seems helpless on this,” Sepulveda said.
“On the serious side, the proposal for a college is still under study. The Naga property is envisioned to be an industrial estate, hence a school may have no place there,” Sepulveda said.
Businessman Crisologo Saavedra and environmentalist lawyers earlier said that 25 percent of the total land area of the Balili property is actually submerged land.
Last Monday, the Provincial Board (PB) asked Provincial Attorney Marino Martinquilla to “verify and assay” persistent talks that a portion of the property is submerged
and that it cannot be titled since the land (if submerged) is a public domain.
Irony
Garcia was “most likely hoodwinked” by unscrupulous individuals in purchasing the property, said PB Member Victor Maambong earlier this week. Capitol purchased the land last year for P98 million.
In a phone interview yesterday, Osmeña said he is glad some PB members are starting to look into the Balili property purchase, amid allegations of anomaly and plans to develop the property into an international port.
“It’s about time. You see, the irony is that they keep saying that my City Council is a rubber stamp. I really think that they should look in the mirror... I’m glad there are some people in the PB who are starting to ask some hard questions.
There are glaring questions here. The governor spends so much money to buy a property for a port that nobody might want to use,” he said.
Engineering sense
Osmeña said there is no “engineering sense” in building a port in Naga’s coastline, which faces the open sea. He said that most ports in the world are natural harbors surrounded by or fronting a body of land that shelters the vessels from storms.
The mayor also said that it would be wise if the governor first consulted shipping firms if they were willing to use a port that faces the open sea.
“That is so reckless and inappropriate, but maybe she’s (Garcia) really like that... For me you’ve got to be nuts to put a port that faces the sea. When the storm comes, the boats will crash onto other vessels,” Osmeña said.
He added that the PB should also look more carefully into the proposed plans for the Balili property, and make feasibility studies for the port project. (LCR/With GMD)

betro August 2nd, 2009, 05:18 PM Aquatlas bulk water supply, power projects need P6B
08/02/2009 | 07:45 PM
Listed Anglo Philippine Holdings Corp. and Atlas Consolidated Mining and Developing Corp. will need P5.9 billion for the bulk water supply and power project of Aquatlas Inc. in Cebu.
Aquatlas vice president Al Balce said P3.4 billion would be alloted for the power project while the remaining P2.5 billion would be used for the water supply based on feasibility studies.
"We are now sitting with the interested parties. There is a window (of opportunity) in Cebu. We should be able to program it in 2010. If we start by 2010, the plant should be running by 2013 or 2014. But it depends on our partner. If they come up with an investment decision, we can start commissioning in 2014," he said after the Angle Philippine annual stockholders' meeting.
Anglo Philippine president Christopher M. Gotanco said they are in talks with local and foreign investors including Chinese and Japanese.
"We like to own a majority here . We won't settle for anything less. We own the mine, the property. It (parties) is very preliminary that is why we don't want to mention names," he said.
Balce said the company is looking at selling water at P25 per cubic meter but the amount can still change.
"The demand is 450,000 cubic meters per day while water district is supplying 150 cubic meters per day. The balance is pumped from the ground that is why sea water is coming in. The water district is charging at P45 per cubic meter," he added.
Gotanco said water distribution is a problem in Cebu.
"If you have substantial addition to your bulk water supply, can you distribute it? That is why proposals for bulk water supply is getting snagged because there has to be a match between bulk water supply and capacity of Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) to distribute," he added.
After the listed holding company's net income fell to P26.71 million in 2008 from a record high P494.5 million in 2007, Gotanco admitted 2009 continues to be "very challenging."
"But we are positioned in a number of very promising sectors: property development, natural resources and infrastructure. While affected by the downturn, hopefully, we will see a recovery," he said.
During the first half of the year, Anglo Philippine incurred an P89-million net loss due to equity share in losses of Atlas. This is a reversal from the P32 million earned the same period last year.
"Once it achieves economies of scale, we are hopeful Atlas will be able to reflect profits," Gotanco said. - Ruby Anne M. Rubio, GMANews.TV

Alternate sites for BPO companies emerging
By Abigail L. Ho

Filed Under: business process outsourcing (BPO)
MANILA, Philippines - Its population of more than 10 million people spread across 17 cities and municipalities, excellent power and telecommunications infrastructure, and abundance of colleges and universities have made Metro Manila the largest business process outsourcing city in the world.
Metro Cebu, on the other hand, is now touted as the world’s largest emerging BPO city, ahead of the likes of Shanghai and Beijing in China, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Krakow in Poland and Kolkata in India, according to research firm Tholons.
But the country’s BPO universe stretches beyond these two urban centers.
Ten “cities” have actually proven themselves worthy of being placed on the list of areas most suitable for BPO operations in the country.
According to the Next Wave Cities 2009 report of the Business Processing Association of the Philippines, Commission on Information and Communications Technology and the Department of Trade and Industry, the Top 10 includes Metro Laguna, Metro Cavite, Iloilo City, Davao City, Bacolod City, Metro Pampanga, Bulacan East and West, Cagayan de Oro City and Lipa City.
These 10 “cities” have a combined absorptive capacity of 888,000. Current employment, however, is placed at a mere 35,000.
This means that these 10 areas, all already ripe to host BPO locators, can still absorb a workforce of more than 850,000.
Best three
The report shows that for 2008-2009, Metro Laguna is the best place for information technology and BPO operations outside of Metro Manila and Metro Cebu. Ready access to potential BPO workers is the primary reason for this.
The Metro Laguna area—composed of the cities and municipalities of Santa Rosa, Calamba, Los Baños, Cabuyao and San Pablo—has more than 7,000 graduates each year.
It can also attract graduates and workers from Metro Manila, as well as from nearby Southern Luzon provinces.
This area has an absorptive capacity of 206,000, but currently employs only 6,000 BPO workers.
Apart from its huge base of potential employees, other plus factors for Metro Laguna are its excellent power and telecommunications infrastructure, low vulnerability to natural disasters and the presence of several Philippine Economic Zone Authority zones.
Compared with others in the Top 10 Next Wave Cities list, however, it is relatively more expensive to operate in Metro Laguna.
BPO locators can also try setting up shop at No. 2 destination Metro Cavite, another Metro Manila neighbor that plays host to more than 5,000 graduates each year and is the country’s most populous province.
Its absorptive capacity is even bigger than that of Metro Laguna at 212,000, yet its current employment is pegged at only around 2,000.
Apart from having relatively good roads, power and telecommunications infrastructure, Metro Cavite is also close to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, a big consideration for BPO locators.
It has limited IT-BPO-specific infrastructure, however, and has no multistakeholder point of contact for investors.
But compared with Metro Laguna, rental rates in Metro Cavite are lower.
Rounding up the Top 3 Next Wave Cities is Iloilo.
Touted as the most cost-efficient city in the list, Iloilo offers potential BPO investors the lowest average wage, rental and power rates among the Top 10.
BPO locators can tap the city’s more than 17,000 graduates a year, although they may have difficulty sourcing additional talent, as the talent pool in the city’s immediate vicinity is quite small.
The city’s current BPO workforce of just 4,000 is way below its estimated absorptive capacity of 22,000.
But investors will have to take into consideration the absence of international flights in the city’s airport, power supply problems and slow construction of IT-BPO infrastructure.
The next frontier
While it has the distinction of being the only city outside of Metro Manila with more than a million people, Davao City is one of the most underutilized potential BPO sites in the country, due mainly to blanket travel advisories that are usually issued against Mindanao as a whole.
The city produces more than 11,000 graduates a year, and also offers potential locators reasonably priced IT-BPO facilities and competitively priced labor and power.
It has both an international airport with international flights and good hotels.
Its growth, however, is hampered by the negative perception of Mindanao in general. Contrary to this bad image, Davao City has one of the most effective police forces in the country, and the peace and order situation in the area is stable.
Bacolod City is another choice BPO spot, having been recognized as the city with the best business environment.
The local government unit helps facilitate the Peza accreditation process and also helps prepare its graduates for work in the BPO sector.
It also provides ready assistance to BPO firms that may encounter any problems during the course of their operation.
But as with most areas in the Visayas and Mindanao, power supply is a problem.
Infrastructure haven
In terms of infrastructure, sixth placer Metro Pampanga offers the best. Centered on the Clark Freeport Zone and including Angeles City and Mabalacat, the area provides BPO locators with an international airport and an efficient road network, as well as reliable and redundant power and telecom infrastructure.
Metro Pampanga also offers access to more than 30,000 graduates a year, institutionalized investor services, an active ICT council and BPO-ready sites that are also Peza-accredited.
But these perks come with a price, as Metro Pampanga has the highest rental and wage rates outside Metro Manila. Low power rates help offset these high costs.
Two other generally untapped potential BPO sites are located in Bulacan—the Baliuag-Marilao-Meycauayan areas in the east and the Malolos-Calumpit areas in the west.
Located relatively close to both Metro Manila and Metro Pampanga, these two key areas in Bulacan occupy the seventh and eighth spots in the Next Wave Cities Top 10 for 2008-2009.
Being near two other Next Wave areas gives Bulacan East and West access to thousands of graduates and workers, in addition to its own 5,000 graduates a year.
While having an absorptive capacity of as much as 300,000, the biggest among the Top 10, there are no BPO firms operating in the two areas.
Its rise to the seventh and eighth spots on the Top 10, however, has prompted the creation of an ICT Council, which will have to quickly address the lack of BPO-ready office space in the province.
Growth potential
Another Mindanao city on the list, Cagayan de Oro City, gives BPO firms another option if they want to escape the already-saturated Metro Manila area. Offering among the lowest rental and wage rates among the Top 10 locations, Cagayan de Oro is considered the most cost-competitive.
Despite having no tertiary schools within its immediate periphery, the city produces more than 6,000 graduates a year and also has access to another 6,000 within commuting distance.
If it plans to take advantage of the BPO boom, the city government should address the relatively high crime rate in the area, as well as prepare additional power capacity to prevent a shortage in the future.
Rounding up the Top 10 is Lipa City in Batangas, which has already proven its position as a BPO host with a huge potential for growth.
Lipa currently plays host to TeleTech and Advanced Contact Solutions, which have a combined employee count of around 1,500. Another 800 people work for smaller IT-BPO players in the area.
The city, however, has yet to put up an ICT Council that will make it easier for IT-BPO companies to set up shop in the area.
New list
By November, CICT chair Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua III said a new Top 10 list of Next Wave Cities would be released.
“Although we’ve already assessed around 40 areas, we want to focus on promoting just 10 at a time. We want to get into that mode where potential investors already have mindshare on our BPO cities. We hope this will serve as an incentive for cities to further develop, to enable them to get into the Top 10,” he said.

jsl_bxu1206 August 2nd, 2009, 06:57 PM Cebu’s fast sea-vessels maker ceases operations
Monday, 03 August 2009 00:24
CEBU CITY—Cebu’s proud maker of fast sea vessels and high-tech utility crafts, FBMA Marine Inc., has ceased operations owing to the effects of the global economic slowdown.
FBMA Marine chairman Roberto Aboitiz said the company is now facilitating the transfer of the company’s remaining workers, numbering more than 100, to make sure they have work within the Aboitiz group or elsewhere.
“We have stopped operations. Nothing has changed in the [economic] situation,” Aboitiz said. “We are now focused on moving our people to have employment somewhere else because they are very skilled like the welders and the fitters.”
FBMA started operations 15 years ago in Balamban town in west Cebu, specializing in building fast passenger and utiliy vessels for clients abroad. Its clients included US Defense contractor Lockheed-Martin, Smit International and the UK Ministry of Defense as well as Rederij Doeksen, among others.
FBMA Marine initially laid off close to half of its work force in May because there were no more orders for the fast crafts it is building. The company has just delivered its last two craft to UK company, Wrightlink. The ferries will soon service the Portsmouth-Isle of Wright route in the United Kingdom this year.
Aboitiz, however, said FBMA is continuously communicating with bigger shipbuilding companies to pursue possible partnerships or even the total sale of the company and its facilities.
“Cebu is still the best place to start a shipyard—a quality shipyard,” Aboitiz said.
He also did not discount the possibility of reopening FBMA as soon as the economic conditions are viable again. “[But] it looks like it may still take a while,” Aboitiz said.
Central Visayas exports went down by more than half in just three months, posting $0.84 billion in the first quarter of 2009 from $1.75 billion in the last quarter of 2008.

jsl_bxu1206 August 2nd, 2009, 06:59 PM Cebu gears up for culinary tourism
By MARS W. MOSQUEDA JR.
August 2, 2009, 7:45pm
Cebu City – Hotels, restaurants, and other stakeholders in the tourism industry here are positioning Cebu as a culinary tourism destination as they introduce various authentic cuisine catering to particularly foreign tourists.
While Cebu can boast of its own unique cuisine, tourists from various countries still look for their own food and they want it authentic, said National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (NAITAS) Chairman Emeritus Robert Lim Joseph.
The Cebu City Marriott Hotel, for instance, is now introducing authentic Indian cuisine in the menu to cater to the rising number of Indian tourists visiting Cebu, said General Manager Roy Abraham.
“It would further promote Cebu to tourists if they know we can offer them their own cuisine,” said Joseph, who added that Cebu now has authentic Indian, Indonesian, Italian, Chinese, French culinary fare, among others.
The 1,020-strong members of NAITAS nationwide are now adding culinary tours in their packages to provide international guests with a glimpse of the various gastronomic fare available in various places in the country, particularly Cebu.
Joseph said positioning Cebu as a culinary tourism destination is an initiative of the Department of Tourism in Region 7 led by Director Dawnie Roa, the Cebu Provincial Government under Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Board Member Agnes Magpale, and local NAITAS officials.
Recently, Cebu’s long list of restaurants catering to local and foreign tastes was updated with the entry of the first-ever authentic Greek restaurant here. Mediterraneo Restobar & Café, managed by Greek Georgios Liolios, who also prepares the menu and cooks the authentic dishes, positions Cebu as a food destination for Greek tourists and locals who want a taste of Mediterranean food.

zidlakan August 3rd, 2009, 12:41 AM anyone knew about the New Airport taxis? i saw lots of yellow cabs(parked) near Royal Oaks in Mandaue. and ive heared that the starting rate is 60 and 4 pesos for every meter. is it true? it's too expensive. :ohno:
relatively. but the ones in NAIA starts at 70, 4 every 100 m
(ayaw lang sad nang 4 every m oi, hurot man sad ato kwarta
and :D). but it's a lot cheaper than the "airport taxis" so
these yellow taxis are usually what i use when i get off
manila airport terminals. wa man po'y choice you have to
walk a mile just to get an ordinary taxi in manila. maayo
in mactan there are ordinary taxis at the departure level
so in effect, 3 choices na ka, 4 including your own ...
but could you confirm? ordinary taxi drivers in manila
always tell me these yellow taxis are owned by manny
pacquiao? aw, that's better than gambling away his
money ...
Henz August 3rd, 2009, 03:58 AM i just rode the yellow taxi here from the airport to makati.. flag rate is P/ 70 and 4.00 for the rate every 100m... usually for the regular taxi i usually pay around 150.. but now it double to P/ 300.
however, it is still better than being stucked up, waiting for a taxi at the centennial airport.
i also heard alot that allegedly the yellow taxi operation is awarded to the joint venture of Atienza and Manny... but the taxis are not owned by them, it is owned by different operators.. they are just collecting a fee...the most convenient and risk free to do business..
Well.. as the saying goes...what are we in power for?
marxman August 3rd, 2009, 04:06 AM hi guys! katong mga m.ari ug manila and magka problema ug taxi. i have a way para maka tipid mu sa taxi.
inig abot ninyo sa airport (arrival area), instead na diretcho mu mangita ug taxi. try going to the departure area sa upper level sa Terminal 3 NAIA. then adto mu pangita ug taxi. its much easier there coz departure area man and dghan taxi m.agi (hatod sa mga m.larga). and mas naka nindot barato ra ang rate kay meter mn. m.sugot ra ang mga taxi driver ana coz naka kwarta naman sila sa ilang g.hatod. malipay pa gani na sila na maka kuha ug pasahero inig biya nila sa airport.

rustyboi August 3rd, 2009, 02:35 PM Were there complaints from MCIA users about the ordinary taxi cabs? By coming up with Yellow Airport Cabs thing, what concern or issue or problem is the Mactan Airport people trying to address? What prompted the MCIA Board that Cebu will have the yellow cabs similar to that in Manila? P70 flag down + P4 every 100 m, what added features or special services do we get from these cabs? nothing, right?
Regarding some MCIA cab drivers ripping off customers (such as mangontrata, not using the meter), I thought the tracer slip/complaint slip is already more than enough to address this concern? I never had problems with the regular taxi cabs in Mactan airport. So what's with the yellow cabs in Cebu airport? :?

she also said something like that never before in the 440 year history of cebu that we have been this united... i was smiling to myself at the irony of that sentence... and i think the everyone had that in mind kay medyo gamay ray namakpak...
maayo unta mag kauli na ang maayong buot sa syudad ug probinsya
Bai, I heard from a friend who's into sales and marketing nga kana daw padung i-hold nga exhibition sa CICC, lugi daw ang Capitol. Because at first, dako kaayo ug fees para sa exhibitors, and they had space for, like, 200 booths. But hapit na ang deadline, around 14 or 15 pa lang ang nag-sign up. So, to save face, Capitol decided to shoulder all the expenses and waive the exhibitors' fees. Ah, diretso kuno 100+ ang nag-sign up uy. Pero mao lagi, lugi ang Capitol.
Could it be possible that this situation has happened a lot of times already? Unsaon nalang pag-earn sa CICC? Samot pa kung matukod na ang SMX nato. Tsk, tsk, tsk...
leviaragon August 3rd, 2009, 06:42 PM Cebu ranks 2nd in country: DOT
CEBU ranked as the second most visited tourist destination in the country from January to June this year, Department of Tourism (DOT) records say.
The province registered 830,599 local and foreign visitors for the first semester this year, which is a 2.3 percent growth from the same period last year.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
Among the top 16 tourist destinations in the country, Cebu had the highest volume of foreign visitors after posting 321,116 guests in the first semester.
The DOT attributed this growth to the expansion in air access from major tourist markets, including the new charter flights from Incheon, Busan, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Kaohsiung.
Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, in a statement, also attributed the positive figures to the increase in room supply, aggressive promotion, as well as public and private sector partnership geared towards diversifying tourism products.
Cebu came next to Camarines Sur that recorded the highest tourist volume or 902,202 visitors, indicating a 194 percent growth from the same period last year.
The DOT said that the investment of the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur in a wakeboarding tourism product stimulated visitor volume and bolstered demand for more accommodations, tour services and transportation.
Tourist arrivals in the top 16 tourism destinations went up by 16.5 percent reaching close to four million in the first semester of 2009 amid the global financial crisis and the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic.
More locals
“This is attributed to the substantial increase in domestic tourism by 20 percent in the second quarter of 2009,” the DOT said.
Of the 3.99 million total tourist arrivals in the country’s top 16 destinations, the biggest chunk or 2.97 million visitors are locals.
Foreign arrivals in key destinations also increased by six percent in the first half of the year despite a decrease of six percent of visitors coming to East Asia and the Pacific, the DOT added.
The other most frequently visited tourist destinations were Boracay (383,813 visitors), Davao (330,247 visitors), Puerto Galera (215,755 visitors) and Ilocos Norte (99,747 visitors).
The positive growth in tourist volume prompted the DOT to encourage more entrepreneurs to create new products and experiences for visitors.

jsl_bxu1206 August 3rd, 2009, 06:47 PM Cebu library for designers opened
First Posted 14:40:00 08/03/2009
A MATERIALS library has been opened in Cebu to help engineers and furniture designers come up with new creations, said a resource center backed by the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (ECCP).
The library will allow artists and developers to “see, touch, and play” as a means to develop new end-products, said organizers.
They also made sure that majority of the materials in the libray would be indigenous and environment friendly.
The research and development library opened in Jagobiao, Mandaue City will contain samples of swatches and indigenous materials which can be used by artists, architects, and product developers come up with an end product that are often for export.
Funding support was also done by the Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation with the Export Development Council. No amount was announced as to the expenses in operating such novel facility but the Materials Library is housed at the CFIF Information Centre.
“It will be open to the academe, opened for everyone as much as possible. We want to inspire designers and developers to come up with something new,” said Henry Schumacher, executive vice president of the ECCP.
World-class furnitures coming from Cebu's furniture industry are mostly exported to the European market.
CFIF President Eric Casas on the other hand described the new facility as a “breakthrough” as it paves the way for the availability and knowledge of non-traditional materials.
According to CFIF organizers, those who could profit most from this “quantum change” rarely had access to or knew how to maximize the creative or business potential of these swift changes.
“Foreseeing how busy design professionals and companies seeking to better their products could benefit from learning about the latest material innovations,” said Casas in a presentation during the press briefing.
Organizers added the over-all goal of the library is to link up the material swatches to existing material suppliers and to acquire eco-friendly material swatches.
The library is also envisioned to house not only the collection of material swatches and books, but will also be a venue for exhibitions, forums and classes on new materials and material uses.
In fact, according to Haufe, the facility is encouraging the academe to take advantage of the materials available at the library.
Haufe said that the library will contain mostly materials which will be displayed in the library are those that are indigenous to Cebu and the neighboring provinces so that product developers can easily access supplies of such materials if they wish to use such materials.
Casas also said that the mixing of materials in new products will be shown in the upcoming Cebu X exhibition of furnitures in the coming weeks.

jsl_bxu1206 August 3rd, 2009, 06:48 PM Capitol to honor ex-governors of Cebu
First Posted 10:19:00 08/03/2009
Former Cebu governors and people who contributed to the province’s growth and development will be recognized during month-long celebration of Cebu Province’s 440th founding anniversary this month.
“It is just right to honor them because we would not be where we are right now if not for them, their talents, their competence and their vision and we should always be reminded of that,” said Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
Garcia said that Maria Victoria “Minnie” Osmeña-Stuart, sister of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, contributed a photo of her father, former governor Sergio Osmeña Jr., to be placed on display at the Governors Gallery.
Invitations were sent to living former governors and to the families of those who had passed away for the Cebu Governors Night and the opening of a gallery on Aug. 31.
The gallery located at the right wing of the Capitol building will feature memorabilia from former governors.
This year’s Garbo sa Sugbo awardees will be recognized during the Governor’s Ball on Wednesday night.
Elizabeth Francia, the governor’s chief of staff, said the selection committee, led by Provincial Board Member Juan Bolo, chose six awardees compared to the eight awardees last year.
Garcia said this year’s recipients were chosen not only for their achievements in their fields of expertise or other awards they had received, but also on how the awardee contributed to Cebu’s growth and development.
Francia said the selection committee was picky this year because “we don’t want to cheapen the awarding ceremony.”
“If there are too many awardees, there’s a tendency that significance of the award disappears,” she said.
Garcia said the celebration of the province’s 440th is a milestone in Cebu’s history, and should be celebrated with a month-long series of activities.
A flag raising ceremony and the opening of an agro-fair at the Capitol grounds today will formally open this year’s celebration.
On Thursday, the Capitol will hold a Mass and a short program to celebrate its founding day anniversary.
One Cebu exposition will be opened to the public at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City on Friday morning.
Garcia said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would grace the opening after attending a Philippine-Russian business forum at the CICC on the same day.
The annual competition of festivals, known as the Pasigarbo sa Sugbu will be held, at the CICC grounds on Aug. 15 while awarding of winners will be on Aug. 17.
On Aug. 31 – the founding day itself – the Capitol will hold its “Cebu Governors Night,” wherein the current administration would recognize the former governors of the Province of Cebu.
Other founding day activities include the inauguration of the province-built school buildings and the new Cebu Provincial Police Office building in sitio Sudlon, barangay Lahug, Cebu City.
Garcia said she would visit the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center on Aug. 29 to honor the inmates, who gained international recognition through their dances posted on the video sharing website YouTube.
She said she would inaugurate the jail’s wastewater system during her visit.

bai, lets not take this away from cam sur... other people (non cebuanos) might interpret this as us being bitter na we're not number 1... i'm sure DOT double checked the data before they published it..
bec of the crisis, maybe some people from luzon opted not to go to the visayas kay mas gastos na... i compare nimo ang mas gasto for a plane trip to cebu, bohol vs a bus ride to naga from manila... maybe because of the exposure it gets from sports shows and word of mouth that people wanted to try it, kay medyo something new pa man ni nga attraction...

For me, this is a good news...
The title No. 1 should not be given to CEBU anymore...
I hope ma number 3 na sunod para maka amgo ni atong duha ka leader nga sige lag away. Wa na nila atimana ang kaugmaon sa mga Cebuanos...

As Cory said after she discovered about her cancer... "God gave us sacrifices for us to become better individuals"," an eye opener for our mistakes to be corrected"...
PINOYmeat August 4th, 2009, 05:45 AM ^^ my take on this, number 1 ang camsur sa total tourists ( foreign and domestic) mas dako baya ang market sa luzon in terms of domestic tourism. unlike sa cebu nga tuyuon gyud kay island province man. ang domestic tourists ang naka number 1 sa camsur, pero sa foreign tourists, as what has been stated sa news article, cebu still tops all other destinations.

Bai, the data you mentioned was for the first quarter (jan to march) ug ang latest karon is ang 1st semester (Jan to June) so I think dili inconsistent ang report.
I suppose when the summer season struck, daghan kaayong taw mostly from luzon, who went to Cam Sur. That bolstered the tourist arrivals catapulting CAm Sur to no.1 in total arrivals. However, for foreign arrivals, No. 1 pa gyapon ang Cebu.
But really, this is good. I am truly happy for Cam Sur and would really want to go there nig uli nako.
This is also good for Cebu. We need a healthy dose of competition diba? Knowing Cebuanos and our pride, dili gyud magpalupig. Hehehe. So mas mu push ni nato so diversify our tourism. Cam Sur is a new thing. A kot of people have already visited Cebu.
Now, what remains is to keep them coming back for more, for something new.
PINOYmeat August 4th, 2009, 05:57 AM ^^ there was a time not a few years ago nga na laguna was the number 1 tourist destination in the country (total foreign and domestic). so it is not unusual sa cebu nga dili mo top kung total number of foreign and domestic tourists ang i consider.
hakz2009 August 4th, 2009, 05:58 AM "Camarines Sur posted a hefty growth in both foreign and domestic arrivals by 52 percent and 60 percent, respectively, ranking it as the most visited destination during the first semester with 902,202 tourists. The provincial government of Camarines Sur investment in a wakeboarding tourism product stimulated visitor volume while continuing to bolster demand for more accommodation, tour services and transportation."
^^ something to be proud of :banana:
with the upcoming international event, plus the anticipated Marian devotion festivities...there's no doubt that this number could reach up to 2M before year ends...
i believe Lray still has something up his sleeves to further boost tourist arrivals in our province...good thing that members of the provincial LGU have been supporting gov's endeavors...
can you think of any other tourist activities that the province can promote to draw more visitors?
I am lost already with the stats of tourist arrivals in the region.
I thought it has not breached the million mark.
But with this latest release by DOT, Camarines Sur alone had already close to a million foreign and local visitors only in the first semester. And Cam Sur is already on top in the country. A stunning growth of 52% in foreign tourists. This is just too impressive performance in marketing strategy by the provincial government under LRey.
Cebu remains on top among foreign tourists. DOT partly attributed this to new international flights from other Asian cities. I wonder what an international airport could do to the province on its tourism industry and its vast economic potentials.:) :) :)
I think the stat was possible. April, May and June was the peak of local tourism activity in the Philippines due to the following reasons:
1. Summer vacation. Most of the Naga City’s Hotels during that time were fully booked. CamSur was also marketed as a hip destination and a place to be seen during summed for students, celebrities and yuppies. CamSur actually targeted the Boracay Party Crowd and succeded denting the huge Boracay tourism market. My Manila based- niece brought her whole berkada from the Ateneo de Manila University for CWC vacation and failed toget a reservation.
2. Cam Sur Hosted for the second time a huge international event, World Wake Barding Competition and a big national event the Philippine National Wake Boarding Competition. CamSur targeted the serious professional wakeboard enthusiasts and now considered a mecca for wakeboarders. Superb facilities- incredibly low rates.
3. Several National Conventions were held in CamSur including three major medical conventions.
4. It was also the peak of Butanding Season. Sorsogon and CamSur are usually packaged to the same type of (adventurous) tourists. This is where Albay filed- make an effort to make them stay put and CamSur Tourism Officials took advantage of. Tourists disembark in Albay, head to Donsol for the Butanding interaction, have a day trip in Albay, have their pictures taken with Mayon on the background then head to CamSur for more wakeboarding and beach hopping.
5. Naga City became a favorite venue even for regional events and meetings after SM City Naga opened- it’s a crowd drawer for local Bicolano tourists.
The CamSur tourism success s a product of good marketing, hard work and good governance. It is now reaping the fruit of its labor.
It is reflected at the impressive and almost incredible statistics.
We should brace for more soaring statistics with 2 major events coming in: Ironman Philippines (an international event considered as the olympics for Triathlon) and the Penafrancia Fiesta, a certified crowd drawer. Even the Amreca concert created a damand in hotel accomodation as all the reserved seat- tickets are sold out except for the bleacher tickets.
CamSur did the impossible.

i'm really proud of what CamSur has accomplished.
we (bicolanos) can actually help out our region's (not just our province's) tourism industry. one simple way is, as in sir naga boy's post, we can invite colleagues to come over to our province :) ...it may appear trivial but definitely ripple effect of this small contribution would be huge...

Henz August 4th, 2009, 06:40 AM Well... thats what we call.. complacency... on the part of Cebu Tourism Industry Palyers and perhaps the product of the bickerings of the key local government officials..
Cam Sur deserves it for being hardworking.. I wouldnt be surprised when Cebu will be overtaken again in the BPO Industry in the near future.. since.. again.. complacency and disunity in the political front..
Henz August 4th, 2009, 06:42 AM And perhaps, our Tourism Industry Players should think beyond, Beach, Shopping, Heritage this time, by introducing eco tourism.
SleMarKen August 4th, 2009, 06:45 AM There are Lessons to be Learned this time for Cebu specially for our leaders...
LordCarnal August 4th, 2009, 06:58 AM For me, this is a good news...
The title No. 1 should not be given to CEBU anymore...
I hope ma number 3 na sunod para maka amgo ni atong duha ka leader nga sige lag away. Wa na nila atimana ang kaugmaon sa mga Cebuanos...
HINAMBUGERA is not a Cebuano style:bash:
As Cory said after she discovered about her cancer... "God gave us sacrifices for us to become better individuals"," an eye opener for our mistakes to be corrected"...
Mao jud Slerz. Dapat Mayor Tom should forego his pride and make amends with the Governor. After all, the Governor is doing everything for Cebu's good.
SleMarKen August 4th, 2009, 07:03 AM ^^Bahala ka diha nold, basta ako si GWEN og si TOMAS gyud ang nag binata, not only Tomas, asta si Gwen...:D
LordCarnal August 4th, 2009, 07:08 AM GWEN!!!!!!!!!!!
Gwen is a good governor and she is doing very much well in her job.
If some people view Tomas as "arrogant," "hard to please," "high standard," etc..etc.. then perhaps mas samot pa si Gwen. It's just like a "taste-your-own-dose-ofmedicine."
Kung dili palupig si Tomas, then samot na nga dili pod palupig si Gwen.
But why pick on Gwen? Ngano nigawas man hinuon nga mas hari si Tomas kaysa ni Gwen?
Both are just Cebuano leaders and in order for Cebu to move forward I think Tomas should make amends with Gwen.

wait, wait ... mura'g nabali ... the city never intruded into the affairs of the
province. the city never closed a road/street in the province. the city never
called for a congressional investigation of any project of the province. even
if you won't believe me, i'm not here to take sides ... just pause and analyse
their actuations in the last two years ... who is intruding into who, who is
interfering with whom?
at least, the least we could ask maybe, kung di man gani mag-uli, wala na
lang unta'y hilabtanay, let the city do its development in the city, and let
the province do their development in the province ... and respect mandated
jurisdiction where there are ...
In other words, silang duha.

bay, i agree, wa'y hari ug rayna nilang duha, pasagdan nalang na sila sa ilang
respective mandates ...
but why would you insist that tomas makes amends with gwen? why not
gwen make amends with tomas? or kung wa jud, no amends, to each his/her
own na lang. basta wala'y hilabtanay na sila ...
but i know this is difficult, gi pa imbestigar na sa congress and SRP nga wa
man ta'y labot ang province ana ...
ivanc August 4th, 2009, 07:16 AM cam sur did a good choice when it thought of investing in adventure tourism, its doing wonders for them now...
cebu needs to add more attractions... a lot of people have been to cebu's beaches and we need to offer something new for tourists to come back...
but hey #2 is still a very good spot and its still a good news for cebu

quoted from the brochure, "It is envisioned to be a natural science laboratory for environmental education and research. It will also be an ecological tourism destination, the first of its kind in Cebu City."

LOL!
Sleepwalker August 4th, 2009, 08:56 AM On TOMAS and GWEN
Both are leaders with vision and passion for Cebu. No need to question on that.
Anyway, ing-ani;
Si TOMAS arogante,
Si GWEN kay nagka-arte.
Maayo pa si RADAZA;
Mag-reclaim reclaim og yuta,
Nga sa runway, pwerteng tungora,
Maski payag di pwede itukod diha.
Sa laing bahin, si BROD SOC;
Sa miaging mga adlaw, mga dagkong krimen, sa Talisay nahan-ok
Unsaon, sa kaugalingon badlungon nga anak, di gani kapitlok..
Atong hisgotan si JONAS CORTES;
Nga hangtod karon, nagtigi pa og iyang mga konsehales,
Gagmayng butang ipaagi pa gud og lalis.. :)
