View Full Version : Cebú City and Province
Henz August 4th, 2009, 10:34 AM Aw sakto ka Slerz, dili lang kay si Gwen kundi si Tomas pod. In other words, silang duha.
i agree. those two leaders are fast becoming pain in the assess of the cebuanos.. in the first place.. they are governed by pride and selfishness.. and look what they have done to Cebu... they are actually DESTROYING our good province...
i am not taking sides in any of the two.. i knew they are best leaders.. but they couldnt be such if they continue to fight like children or dogs na nag ilog sa bukog... they should get their acts together and do better for CEBU!!!!
Henz August 4th, 2009, 10:39 AM quoted from the brochure, "It is envisioned to be a natural science laboratory for environmental education and research. It will also be an ecological tourism destination, the first of its kind in Cebu City."

this is a good project.. i hope this will be finished on time so that we can offer this to prospective tourists who like this kind of thrills....
and also our DOT Head.. Ms. Dawnie Roa.. should now.. closely look on other potentials of Cebu... i know she is working had.. but i guess. she might explore further, be more creative with the cooperation of all stakeholders in the industry....
Sleepwalker August 4th, 2009, 10:43 AM Well, if DOT Secretary Durano will run for governor sa Cebu, this will give the Cebuanos another "good" option other than Gwen. I do like Gwen's initiative on preserving/boosting Cebuano's awareness on their culture and history. However, it seems these days, she is becoming more of a trapo than the Gwen I used to know.
On the other hand, with BRT and SRP in progress, for the time being, I'd like to have an Osmena ally at Cebu City Hall for the next three to six years. Well, I have this hope that BRT and SRP will elevate Cebu to the next level.
Kan-irag Nature's Park and the planned Cebu Eco-center are good varieties for the tourism package of Cebu. The good thing is that, both are also educational.
I hope Cebu tourism officials will also design some attractions for thrill seekers. Right now, the only thrill we have in Cebu is by walking alone, jewelry cladded in Colon at night. :)
kiretoce August 4th, 2009, 10:47 AM OT: FYI, in case you're wondering, I merged the SHOP! and EATS! threads to further streamline the forum.
Henz August 4th, 2009, 10:50 AM Correct.. i hope he will seriously consider running.. para naa ta choice.. if he will run.. he will have my vote and my family's.. we will surely behind him.. to give the province a fresh leadership.
diehardbisdak August 4th, 2009, 10:54 AM ^^ that's fine...these two activities will always go together...
Henz August 4th, 2009, 10:55 AM agree..
zidlakan August 4th, 2009, 11:07 AM Correct.. i hope he will seriously consider running.. para naa ta choice.. if he will run.. he will have my vote and my family's.. we will surely behind him.. to give the province a fresh leadership.
well, we can't blame him, it's his personal decision. i have a feeling the clan
wants him to run for governor, but he is determined to run for the senate ...
on the other hand, he can also provide some fresh flavor to the otherwise
boisterous and noisy dis-oriented senate ...
:ohno:
Henz August 4th, 2009, 11:16 AM mao jud.. dili na lang sya mag Senate oi.. kay i think he is not ripe pa for the senate and besides IMO he wont have a chance in the Senate..
Ari nalang na nya.. ibubo ang iyang leadership sa Cebu kay para naa new innovation ang Cebu and besides ma bungkag na ang dynasty sa mga Garcia...

Sige panghambog nga No.1 ang Cebu...kay we are one...
Ning-tomas (TOMAS baliktad sa SAMOT) pa gud tungod anang iyang GWEN College...Bahala na og pinugos kaayo ang acronym.. :ohno:
luod naman gyud na si gwen daan. wa na gyud ko malipay niya.
how i wish the governor is right, but making DOT look like a liar seems so
unbecoming of her position ... for sure one of them is lying, or trying to
deceive, ... you can conclude who ...

Cebu City loses chance to host Davis Cup matchBy Marian C. Baring
CEBU’s claim to be a sports tourism destination hit another snag and it is because of the same problem—lack of venue. The Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) were bent on holding the Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group II finals between the Philippines and New Zealand here next month.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
This will not happen yet due to the lack of a suitable venue.
“There were talks of having the Davis Cup here in Cebu but I don’t think Cebu has a venue,” said PSC executive director Fr. Vic Uy.
Philta regional head John Pages said that this was not the first time Cebu was considered to be the venue for the Davis Cup.
“They wanted to hold it in Cebu since last year. During the Davis Cup last month in Manila, I was there and Philta brought it up again,” said Pages.
Pages added that with the standards set by the International Tennis Federation like the bleachers and backstop, none of the venues in Cebu can pass.
“Sayang. Not too many people watch in Manila. The Davis Cup would be a smash here,” said Pages.
Earlier this year, Cebu was also considered to be the venue for the Ironman event but the lack of a suitable venue also axed that proposal.Pages said the only chance for Cebu to have sports venues that comply with international standard is if the plan to put one in SRP finally pushes through.
“Our only hope is the SRP. Remember a few years back when Mayor Tommy talked about a grand sports complex at the SRP? I think that’s Cebu’s only chance. A several-hectare property complete with football fields, baseball diamonds, a track oval, swimming pool, and, of course, tennis courts,” said Pages.Sun.Star sought Cebu City Counclior and Cebu City Sports Commission Chairman Jack Jakosalem for comment but he did not respond as of press time.

tinuod gyud ni ay!
if we really want tourist to stay longer in cebu, kinahanglan we should "know" their "every" need. ang ato ra dinhi kay puro ra beaches, historical sites, festivals etc. pero kana ra, that's it, nothing new! we lack sports facilities which most tourists also looks forward to. we should sustain tourism by improving our tourism packages and not merely just relying on the existing ones. we should be innovative, creative and not be too complacent.
we can't have all the facilities, but at least we should have one.
Sleepwalker August 4th, 2009, 12:58 PM Sayang kaayo ang Davis Cup ug Ironman...However, should the Capitol pushed through the proposed megadome, I wonder if Cebu could still have the chance to host an international summit like the ASEAN.
Anyway, sports tourism and eco-tourism are new avenues for our tourism groups/LGU to check for potentials.
I have high hopes for Cebu. If we lost the chance, I know nga we can have it in the future. Let's do it one at a time.
Sensya na og daghan ko ron og storya...Wa'y lingaw diri sa opisina.
mAiNsTrEaMhunter August 4th, 2009, 01:03 PM ^^
anugon gyud! mura'g tuo na sa luzon ang ironman sa?
Sleepwalker August 4th, 2009, 01:13 PM ^^Sige lang bai...It's not yet our time, i think...Lisod man gud kaayo og pugson, magsunggo unya...
But anyway, these are signs for our LGU's/private stakeholders to push further and to explore more potentials.

bakasaurus August 4th, 2009, 02:35 PM Regarding anang world class sports facility, pila na gyud ko katuig naghandom ana. Labi na nig magjogging ko sa Fernan Bridge. Magimagine dayon ko ug world class sports complex with a stadium and oval, baseball field, olympic sized pools, tennis and badminton courts...
ug asa dapita?
diha gyud anang space between the 2 bridges sa Mactan na side. Naa lang gamay na reclamation kinahanglan iextend gamay ang land towards Mactan Channel.
Unya puno na dayon ug trees and greens, complete with shops and cafes inside. Unya waterfront na development. Butangan pod og coastal na road. and the whole area extending to the M. quezon National HIghway ang gamiton.Add to that a performing arts center ala Sydney opera house pero maghimo ta ug atoang style. Of course architecture based on marine life is very fitting pod sa atoa.
It will be a sports park of sorts, parehas aning naa diri 10 minutes from where I live..(ill post pics later).
A section could even have a real skateboarding park (first in the philippines I think) and a wakeboarding facility.
Naimagine na ninyo akoang giimagine. Mao na imo makita nig saka sa bridge! Hahahaha.
Isnt that the perfect location? It is near a body of water, it is very accessible, near the hotels and resorts of Mactan Island, and 10 minutes from the Airport!
Ug best of all, dili masangit ang eroplano. No need for highrise developments! And so its very fitting for Lapu-Lapu City!
Ug unsa na lang gyud nako kadiskohido kay ang among gwapohon nga mayor ganahan man diay magreclaim, dapit sa runway..
Sinjin P. August 4th, 2009, 02:48 PM ^ CamSur has a skateboarding park. :)
Jimbu August 4th, 2009, 02:49 PM On TOMAS and GWEN
Both are leaders with vision and passion for Cebu. No need to question on that.
Anyway, ing-ani;
Si TOMAS arogante,
Si GWEN kay nagka-arte.
Maayo pa si RADAZA;
Mag-reclaim reclaim og yuta,
Nga sa runway, pwerteng tungora,
Maski payag di pwede itukod diha.
Sa laing bahin, si BROD SOC;
Sa miaging mga adlaw, mga dagkong krimen, sa Talisay nahan-ok
Unsaon, sa kaugalingon badlungon nga anak, di gani kapitlok..
Atong hisgotan si JONAS CORTES;
Nga hangtod karon, nagtigi pa og iyang mga konsehales,
Gagmayng butang ipaagi pa gud og lalis.. :)
maayo jud. i agree bai nga ang usa arrogante ang usa ma-arte. nag mantiner lang ang province ug suroy-suroy nga naa man unta dakong kwarta for dagkong projects. :)
bakasaurus August 4th, 2009, 02:54 PM ^ CamSur has a skateboarding park. :)

rustyboi August 4th, 2009, 05:07 PM For me, this is a good news...
The title No. 1 should not be given to CEBU anymore...
I hope ma number 3 na sunod para maka amgo ni atong duha ka leader nga sige lag away. Wa na nila atimana ang kaugmaon sa mga Cebuanos...
HINAMBUGERA is not a Cebuano style:bash:
As Cory said after she discovered about her cancer... "God gave us sacrifices for us to become better individuals"," an eye opener for our mistakes to be corrected"...
Bai, the data you mentioned was for the first quarter (jan to march) ug ang latest karon is ang 1st semester (Jan to June) so I think dili inconsistent ang report.
I suppose when the summer season struck, daghan kaayong taw mostly from luzon, who went to Cam Sur. That bolstered the tourist arrivals catapulting CAm Sur to no.1 in total arrivals. However, for foreign arrivals, No. 1 pa gyapon ang Cebu.
But really, this is good. I am truly happy for Cam Sur and would really want to go there nig uli nako.
This is also good for Cebu. We need a healthy dose of competition diba? Knowing Cebuanos and our pride, dili gyud magpalupig. Hehehe. So mas mu push ni nato so diversify our tourism. Cam Sur is a new thing. A kot of people have already visited Cebu.
Now, what remains is to keep them coming back for more, for something new.
that's great news for CamSur, a well-deserved recognition. i mean, almost 200% growth in tourist arrivals is really hard to achieve and CamSur defied the impossible. :okay: it can be done to any other emerging tourist destination too, it could inspire other places to prop up their tourism advantage.
on a positive note, Cebu experienced growth still, compared to same period last year when the province gained recognition being the top tourist destination. while CamSur captured the wakeboarding-adventure-thrill seeker market, Cebu on the other hand naman is more on business+leisure, honeymooners, health and wellness, cultural/heritage etc.. The upcoming hotels and resorts will accommodate more tourists in the coming years. But I can't help but agree with some fellas here, Cebu needs something new to offer.

jsl_bxu1206 August 4th, 2009, 05:51 PM King of Swaziland to attend Cebu’s 440th founding anniversary
Mars W. Mosqueda, Jr.
Tuesday August 04, 2009
CEBU – The king of Swaziland, King Mswati III, is set to arrive in Cebu on Wednesday together with close to 100 royal members, cabinet members, and businessmen from his kingdom, to attend the 440th founding anniversary of the Province of Cebu.
Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia will receive the king on Wednesday, the first day of his four-day visit to Cebu, and his entourage from the Kingdom of Swaziland, a country in Southern Africa.
"The King of Swaziland has accepted our invitation," Garcia told reporters during her press conference yesterday.
A dinner to be tendered by Garcia in honor of King Mswati III, who is the second among the 67 children of the late King Sobhuza II, will be held at the Marco Polo Plaza this coming Thursday.
The Philippines and Swaziland – a kingdom of 1.2 million Swazis – have maintained close diplomat ties through the years and have cooperated in the multilateral arena. Swaziland is also home to many Filipinos who work in the garments and textile industry, and in the field of education and medicine.
Garcia made the pronouncement on Monday as she officially kicked off the province’s month-long 440th founding anniversary yesterday.

jsl_bxu1206 August 4th, 2009, 05:56 PM Environmentalists score Cebu govt on legality of Kepco dump-site deal
Tuesday, 04 August 2009 20:52
A POWERFUL member of the Cebu provincial legislative board said on Tuesday the provincial government is still unsure about its agreement to host the coal-ash dump site of power-generation firm Korean Electric Co. (Kepco) and its partner Salcon Power Corp. (SPC) even as the legality of the deal is being questioned by environmental lawyers.
The provincial board is currently conducting a separate investigation into the legality of the provincial government’s purchase of the dumpsite, a 25-hectare, P98-million beachfront property in Naga town in south Cebu formerly called Balili Beach Resort.
“If you ask the provincial government what our stand is right now, we are not yet sure,” provincial board member Victor Maambong said. “It is now the decision of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources [DENR] through the ECC [environmental compliance certificate] to decide whether or not it is legal for the province to have an agreement with Kepco. This is one of the provisions of the agreement.”
Maambong is chair of the provincial board’s committee on the environment overseeing the two issues.
Kepco-SPC is building a 200-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Naga town just south of Cebu City. It plans to dump its waste coal ash in the beachfront property as covered by a 25-year agreement with the provincial government.
Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia already received a $500,000 check shortly after the agreement was signed. Another $500,000 will also be released to the provincial capitol upon the commencement of the dumping.
Meanwhile, lawyer Gloria Estenzo-Ramos of the Global Action for Climate Change said the regulator (the province) could not enter into an economic deal with a regulatee (Kepco-SPC).
“This is just a clear conflict of interest,” Estenzo-Ramos told the 888 News Forum Tuesday.
The group also expressed concern about the toxic elements in the coal ash that could pollute the sea in front of the beach property, the marine-resource-rich Bohol Strait.
She said the agreement with the provincial government was clearly hurriedly done without consulting residents surrounding the beach property to support Kepco-SPC’s $120-million loan application with the Asian Development Bank.
Maambong said the provincial government leaves it up to the DENR to settle conflicting issues regarding the coal-ash dump site.
As for the land, Maambong said the provincial board is still looking whether the landowners sold the parcels of land that are under water or untitled foreshore lands.
The Cebu provincial government already paid for the 25-hectare property.
“The issue is whether there were misrepresentations by the landowners. The province can still take back the payments as it is still under the warranty period,” Maambong said.
The representative of Kepco at the forum, Neil Lawrence Miral, said he could not speak for the company over the loan. He said, however, the two 100-MW power plants are still 68-percent complete.
The plants, originally scheduled to go online by 2009, is set to enter the grid in 2011.
Miral assured environmentalists the company will follow environmental guidelines with regard to emissions standards and solid-waste disposal.

Ubay-ubay naman gud ta diri sa SSC-Cebu, so, if we start something good ngadto sa katilingban (in this case, ang atong pinangga nga Sugbo), i think OK na ni.
Anyway, pasensya na kung mo-post ko og super karaan nga news. News ni katong united pa ang city hall ug capitol...Katong na-threatened ang tibook Sugbo tungod sa Sugbuak... :)
Mayor Wants Cebu City to Rejoin Province
(http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/net/2005/05/26/mayor.wants.cebu.city.to.rejoin.province.html)
CEBU CITY -- Mayor Tomas Osmeña and the Cebu City Council are pushing to include Cebu City again in electing Capitol officials, saying the province is better off consolidated than divided.
In a privilege speech during the council session Wednesday, Vice Mayor Michael Rama urged Representative Antonio Cuenco and Deputy Speaker Raul del Mar "to work out in Congress to allow us again to participate in electing officials of the province, without taking what we are presently enjoying as a highly urbanized city."
The council vowed to keep opposing the move of three Cebuano legislators to create the provinces of Cebu del Sur, Cebu del Norte and Occidental Cebu.
"I will be pushing for Cebu City to be included in the referendum because we are involved in this, being the capital of the province. I would even want Cebu City to be given back to the province, we should be one," Osmeña said Wednesday.
He added that Cebu City should be included in the debates and voting on the bills, since the city "is the center of public opinion and the opinion-makers in the province are in Cebu City."

dive-cebu August 5th, 2009, 03:25 AM Guys,
Just wanna clarify something, and this is quite related to the no. 1 tourist destination issue... acdg to the latest data from DOT, Cebu's only no. 2, right? But, we should be clear that this is only for Tourist arrivals, not included here are the Business travelers. If we're gonna take into account the big chunk of business travelers, I think we'll still get the highest no. of arrivals, sakto ba ko?
This explains the BOOM in Business hotel construction in Cebu...
for your comments pls.

murag gamay nalang kuwang, bashing naman siguro ni  :jk: joke ra oi.
yes there's some reality to what you've said, that's true. and I have the same sentiments about seemingly bad condition of some roads in Cebu. but i beg to disagree on most part. You're talking about tourists not coming back and citing reasons like "super" poor infrastructure which I believe is exaggerated hehe, when the DOT report simply says Cebu has maintained its tourist arrivals. it hasn't gone down (just yet), despite the AH1N1, global recession and bad weather, Cebu still managed to sustain the influx of tourists. 830,000+ visitors in Cebu (in just six months) must mean something good, don't you think? ;) we're just halfway, we still have 6 more months for Cebu to attract tourists. let's all hope for the best :okay: not just for Cebu but the whole Philippine tourism industry, we can't be number one forever you know. :D
ritche August 5th, 2009, 05:45 AM But honestly, dapat e clarify sa DOT..... We are the number 1 tourist destination according to the DOT data for the first quarter of the year 2009.. So how come na number 2 ta on the list presently? Is there any clarification from the DOT?
And besides even with the wakeboarding in Camsur.. i dont believe, it will generate more tourists than in Cebu...
I share the same doubts regarding the claim to be number 1 tourist destination. It could be it was created to prop up marketing, but logic and past figure doesn't to indicate that this claim holds water. I mean for people who think and compute and look for reasons and logic, that is unacceptable. Cebu definitely has many fold times number of hotel rooms, a modern international airport and established as the number 1 tourist destination for long. It could not just be upset that fast.
ritche August 5th, 2009, 05:49 AM I've been to that city and province that claims to be number 1 and its quite hard to get there...You have to travel long hours, and the number of flights nowadays doesn't look it can haul the number of people it claimed to have generated to go to their place. The capital itself isn't that inviting and clean, except for that neighboring town which is the capital city, and which has the facilities that they boast to be the world's number 1.
ritche August 5th, 2009, 05:50 AM And add to it all, it is a typhoon prone area usually hard hit when storms strike...
Sleepwalker August 5th, 2009, 05:51 AM ^^But as of the moment, let's take the figures as it is. There is nothing wrong with being overtaken...It only means that there is a healthy competition and that overall, all of us will benefit from this.
We can not be always on top and be the winner in all the things.
Cebuanos passion and efforts to make Cebu a better place, that's a winner... :)
Who thought before, that a bustling commercial and industrial Metro Cebu could also become a tourism powerhouse? So, let us not be surprised if CamSur has successfully beat the odds...CamSur people found the potential of their place, did their best to make use of it and bingo!!!

di man na bashing oi...realidad man na..kung gusto ta mo improve kinahnglan una ta maka realize og makakita sa unsay realidad...wa man ta hing-anhi ani nga forum just to boast and show the good side of cebu, we are here as well to find answers to problems, and reflect on things that we need to do for each City that we care about...:)
I think im not exaggerating im just emphasizing the flaws...if it needs to be emphasize and be shown with such strong desciptions and forceful emotions, much better to awaken those who are sleeping and who were just contnented of what they see...we need not just compare and compete our city to other philippine cities, but most importantly, the international urban centers, to put on the good standards of development...

Our young governor in Camarines Sur has deep sense of leadership and entrepreneurial drive in running our province through his effective promotion of tourism, investments and technology. Gov. L-Ray Villafuerte has been internationally and locally awarded by various organizations for the tourism promotion and development in our province. Recently, he was given the Presidential Citation for Tourism Developments.
Excellent marketing strategies and promotions have been made to achieve what our province is right now. Example is the promotion of our wakeboarding facility at SM Mall of Asia;

rustyboi August 5th, 2009, 09:05 AM I think im not exaggerating im just emphasizing the flaws...if it needs to be emphasize and be shown with such strong desciptions and forceful emotions, much better to awaken those who are sleeping and who were just contnented of what they see...we need not just compare and compete our city to other philippine cities, but most importantly, the international urban centers, to put on the good standards of development...
I do recognize and agree some of the reality you presented especially the roads. coz again, I share the same sentiments.
@Sinjin, that Canduman road has really poor road condition, i often pass by there coz my siblings study at SHS-J.
What I'm actually referring to how I see as exaggerated, such as:
usa na nga dili na kaayo ganahan mamalik tourist nagnhi kay pipila lang ila nga maexperience nga tropical paradise or order sa usa ka nindot nga syudad, the resort or hotel ra gyud intawn but when they go out sa boundareis sa resort and hotel, wala!
^^grabe sad kung wala, as in ZERO? hehe
ang skyline ray gaayo pero once your down there, experiencing the inner core of the city, its all chaos, bati ang infrastructure!!!! super!
^^All chaos? super bati jud ang infrastructure? LOL
Nag Number 2 lang ang Cebu, mura man hinuon bati nalang gyud tanan? funny paminawn. I think I know better about in this forum, coz you're right nga dili puro boasting and good side about the city atong posts dire. ako lang gi klaro ang akong point. :)

Call center company to hire 1.2T workers (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/enterprise/view/20090731-218093/Call-center-company-to-hire-12T-workers)
By Dale G. Israel
Cebu Daily News
First Posted 12:24:00 07/31/2009
About 1,200 jobs are available in September with the opening of a call center company in Mandaue City.
Ryan Beattie, site director for Focus Direct Philippines, said the firm is encouraging both part-time and full-time employees and even working students to apply.
Beattie said Focus Direct Philippines was willing to offer working students a 70-percent subsidy for their tuition.
“There is just a ton of qualified people in the Philippines especially in Cebu,” said Beattie in a press conference at the Alpa Suites in barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
“That is why we chose to expand in Cebu,” he said.
Beattie, a Canadian, said Focus Direct Philippines has a branch in Bacolod City, Negros Occidnetal.
Its expansion in Cebu was a proof that the global recession was not affecting their firm primarily because they have a good marketing arm in the United States, he said.
The company is affiliated with Focus Services based in Utah, with major clients including Direct TV, Quest Internet Services and AT&T.
Beattie said their future office would be in barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue and would have 300 seats each floor.
He said two floors would be used upon initial operations. “We will hire as many as we can.”
Beattie cited the number of good schools, communication facilities and the layout of the city as among the primary factors in choosing their Subangdaku office.
He said layout means easy access for their employees to and from work.
Vanessa Gay Nang, Management office of Focus Human Resources, said they would prefer those who had previous experience working in a call center but they would not close doors with beginners especially students.
She said the nature of their work would be inbound calls from clients in North America.
Beattie said the company’s benefits and salaries for their employees would compete with other call center firms in Cebu.
Focus Direct Philippines will accept applicants from Aug. 5 to Aug. 15 at the Alpa Suites near the boundary of sitio Panagdait, barangay Mabolo, Cebu City and Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
Beattie said their firm catered some other smaller businesses in the United States, including health products that can be purchased online.
“We serve as their customer services hotline,” he said.
Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, who was at the press conference, said that he welcomed Focus Direct's expansion in Mandaue City.
Cortes said the Mandaue City government would improve street lighting in the location of the call center and assign police and barangay tanods to secure the employees — whose shifts would be mostly during the night.
Cortes also invited Focus Direct to join the Jobs Fair slated in the Mandaue Business Month and at the Charter Day Celebrations of Mandaue City next month.
He said the city government welcomed such types of firms in Mandaue City.
He said he would be offering an incentive package to attract investors like Focus Direct Philippines to Mandaue City.

Cebu I think has always keeped it's relative autonomy from the Central Government, it has ever worked on it's own. I dunno? just ask the older ones.:nuts::nuts:
zidlakan August 5th, 2009, 02:39 PM Asks Cebuanos, what was Cebu during Aquino administration and during EDSA Revolution? (1986-1992)?
(1986-1992) was the period cebu transformed from being the provincial city
that it was into world-class international metropolis that is known today.
1988-1992 is the first term of former cebu governor emilio osmeña and cebu
city mayor tomas osmeña, the architects of ceboom. those os us (the older
ones :D) can vividly remember the pride that all of us felt those times as
cebu entered and took its place in the international map besides manila. 1988-
1992 was the time (and as always) when cebu did not depend on national
government and the capital city of manila, but instead worked on its own to
economic independence contributing heavily to the country's progress.

jsl_bxu1206 August 5th, 2009, 07:14 PM Cory and her Cebu connection
First Posted 10:15:00 08/05/2009
As the country lays to rest one of its beloved leaders, Cebuanos and Cebu residents feel a certain pride in knowing that it did its part in protecting Corazon Aquino during the country's darkest hours before the dawn that is the first Edsa Revolution.
At the same time, there’s a certain irony that Cebu hosted not just the central figure of the first Edsa Revolution but also a beneficiary of the second revolution whose half-hearted attempts to provide a state funeral for Aquino were met with polite rejection.
When news of Aquino's death broke out, Carmelite sisters and Cebu City Rep. Antonio Cuenco recalled with a mixture of grief and wistfulness that fateful day on Feb. 22, 1986 when they brought the slain senator's widow to the convent to protect her from feared henchmen of the Marcos regime.
While Aquino's nfluence in Cebu may have waned in the past decade with the emerging political strength of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo—who became the first president to have taken her oath of office in the province –– there was little doubt about her role in Cebu’s development.
There were a few instances when Cory figured in arguments with Cebuano leaders like former Cebu governor Lito Osmeña, who then advocated the use of Cebuano as the country's national language instead of Tagalog.
However, the former governor had nothing to worry about since Aquino and her predecessors helped him build the province’s economy into a “boom” economy before the 1997 Asian crisis.
And she lent her presence and following to Cebuano political figures such as Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. , who was then targetted for impeachment by lawmakers who are now in the forefront in the opposition against President Arroyo.
In all these, Cory's Cebu connection has not been severed though it had been overtaken by her predecessors. When Aquino called on President Arroyo to resign, not a few Cebuano political figures wondered and even chided Aquino for siding with the opposition whom she helped topple with the second revolution.
When she passed away peacefully last Aug. 1, her connection to the Cebuanos was revived and with it tributes from local officials, some of whom were kids and teenagers when the first Edsa revolution broke out.
Cebuano leaders from mayors to provincial officials join the Cebu Archdiocese in paying their final respects to the late president. For those officials who had the fortune of meeting and working with Cory, they can honor her legacy with selfless service to their constituents.

Excellent marketing strategies and promotions have been made to achieve what our province is right now. Example is the promotion of our wakeboarding facility at SM Mall of Asia;

We have also Naga City Mayor Jessie Robredo. Naga City is being visited every week by international and national personalities and public officials to learn, study and know the system of governance being practiced....Mayor Robredo is a Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Good Governance.
Being a Camarinense, I take pride of our local leaders for their unwavering promotion and development of our province.
Cam Sur, Cam South!
i think we need to give credits where credit is due: i laud the local government officials of cam sur in investing in sports oriented tourism thats attracting the more active, adventure thrill seeker, and energetic younger generation of tourists.
the cebuano lgu's didnt see this coming as they were banking on our white sandy beaches, resorts and hotels, cultural heritage sites, and the strategic location of cebu in itself. there is a lack of investment on the government, business and education sectors towards sports and entertainment infrastructure which in turn can be a tourists attraction in itself.
some of the infrastructure is there and its high time for cebu to reinvent itself to remain competitive.

Jimbu August 5th, 2009, 10:46 PM Cebu records highest foreign arrivals in RP (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=493419&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman)
Updated August 06, 2009 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - Even as Cebu emerged only as the second most visited destination during the first half of 2009, it turned out to be the top preferred destination for foreign visitors in the entire Philippines.
A record from the Department of Tourism Planning and Promotions Department, revealed that Cebu generated a total of 321,116 foreign tourists in the first semester of this year and topped the over-all foreign arrival comparative by provinces.
The record, however, showed that Cebu only comes second in the most visited destination in the country next to Camarines Sur, which posted a hefty growth in both foreign and domestic arrivals by 52 percent and 260 percent, respectively, ranking it as the most visited destination in the first six months this year.
Cebu emerged as second most visited tourist destination with 830,599 visitors, claiming 23 percent share of total arrival. But, Cebu continues to be the top destination for foreign tourists with 321,116 in the first semester
DOT attributed its sustained position of Cebu as top foreign tourists drawer, the expansion in air access from major tourist markets, including the new chartered flights from Incheon, Busan, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Kaohsiung as well as increase in room supply, aggressive promotion, public and private sector partnership to diversify the tourism products greatly contributed to the hike in visitor volume to Cebu.
Visitor count in Puerto Princesa and Bohol went up by 63 percent and 16 percent, respectively, as diving, ecotourism, bird-watching, adventure and incentive tourism products were jointly launched by the DOT, LGUs and the private sector.
Increased demand also ushered the conception of more community-based tourism products that increased the availability of product offering and livelihood for local residents.
Overall, tourist arrivals in the top 16 tourism destinations went up by 16.5 percent reaching close to four million in the first semester of 2009.
According to DOT its efforts to maximize opportunities in international markets and encourage greater domestic travel movement in the first six months provided the impetus to sustain tourism growth in the midst of challenges brought by the global financial crisis and Influenza A (H1N1).
This feat is attributed to the substantial increase in domestic tourism by 20 percent in the second quarter of 2009, which enhanced the business and investment confidence in the sector during the period January to June 2009.
Likewise, the changing lifestyle and travel pattern of more Filipinos and Philippine residents to spend their Holy Week, long weekends and summer/ holiday vacation in the various tourist areas of the country boosted tourist flow.
Foreign arrivals in key destinations also increased by 6% in the first half of the year despite a decrease of six percent in inbound visitors into East Asia and the Pacific.
Other most frequently visited destinations included Boracay (383,813); Davao City (330,247); Puerto Galera (215,755); and Ilocos Norte with 99,747 tourist arrivals.

Bai, your CamSur is featured on this month's Maxim magazine. Not only the waterpark, but the other attractions as well. Gov. L-Ray is also on the featured on the "Exit Strategy" section of the magazine. A couple of months ago, he was on FHM.
Now, these two magazines may not be travel mags, but the people who read them are the ones who can afford to spend for a vacation...the yuppies. This is great promotion for CamSur. : )

well unless you are into Sociology and Ahtropolog you wouldnt also understand these matters...
You are not supposed to judge based on your own views...because academically speaking.. regional pride is part of the social dimension not just in our country but in all social systems in the world.
Henz August 6th, 2009, 05:54 AM So how come.. Cebu which had been NO. 1 sa Foreign Tourist.. came in Second Over-All.. How do the DOT do the Mathematics in counting Domestic Tourists? I am just asking...

Henz August 6th, 2009, 05:58 AM yeah i know.... but i am just puzzled.. on how do they count the domestic tourist.. apil ang mga passengers sa bus who passed by CAmsur? In Cebu, i think the basis is hotel occupancy, travel agencies etc.. wala na gani apil sa kwenta ang mga domestic tourists who are has a place to stay in cebu like relatives and friends.

so does it mean CAmsur right now.. have the complete facilities to accommodate the 200% growth from Jan.- June 2009? How many resorts does Camsur have right now..

Henz August 6th, 2009, 06:23 AM I share the same doubts regarding the claim to be number 1 tourist destination. It could not just be upset that fast.
i just read.. this.. i also share it.. if cebu.had 830k tourist from jan-june and Camsur had more than 900k...Camsur must have been teeming with people nowaday... wow ha.. 900k people from jan-june going to Camsur just to have a wakeboarding...... wow!
SleMarKen August 6th, 2009, 06:27 AM ^^huh... Don't under estimate unless kung naka adto na gyud ka sa CamSur... Mas accessible baya ang CamSur from the Capital kaysa sa Cebu... Og mas barato kaysa mo adto kag Cebu...
Henz August 6th, 2009, 06:32 AM Precisely that is my point.. if they count the number of passengers in the bus that even passed by Camsur as domestic tourist.. then that exactly explains the figures..
because if you would analyze, from all angles.. its is mathematically improbable.
Cebu was No. 1 tourist destination from Jan. March 2009.. Then suddenly, No. 1 na ang Camsur (who was far from the top 5 on the same DOT figures) from Jan-June 2009 figures.... with a 194% increase....
hakz2007 August 6th, 2009, 06:33 AM i just read.. this.. i also share it.. if cebu.had 830k tourist from jan-june and Camsur had more than 900k...Camsur must have been teeming with people nowaday... wow ha.. 900k people from jan-june going to Camsur just to have a wakeboarding...... wow!
di lang po wakeboarding activities sa CamSur:lol: you should visit our Naga City and Camarines Sur Thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=923522) for you to have a glimpse of the photos of the different activities from January to June 2009....:)
^^huh... Don't under estimate unless kung naka adto na gyud ka sa CamSur... Mas accessible baya ang CamSur from the Capital kaysa sa Cebu... Og mas barato kaysa mo adto kag Cebu...
its only 500 pesos ordinary bus from Manila to CamSur...Various airlines offering go lite fares fromManila to Naga....Starting August 16, Manila-Naga flights will be increased.

dive-cebu August 6th, 2009, 06:48 AM guys,
can we just end this pathetic issue of questioning the credibility of that DOT figure. we have to remember that the DOT Secretary is a Cebuano. Do you think he will allow his department to issue such statistics without any basis or with rigged figures? If you didn't have time to check on other places other than our own Cebu, I think it's high time for you to do your homework, and learn from what other places are doing and what they're experiencing. Im based in Manila, and based on my observation, a lot of people here have recently visited or are contemplating of going to CamSur because of the unique experience. Wakeboarding, other water sports, even butanding watching. Add to that the Boracay of Bicol which was the location of Survivor France. Through WORD OF MOUTH, domestic tourists are flocking to CamSur, and that's REALITY! Tourism stakeholders in Cebu should think something UNIQUE so our domestic tourists will have more reasons to visit our place again.
So please, please lang, undangi na kuno ninyo ang pag contest sa latest data sa DOT. We're about to sound really pathetic...

I prefer them to be number One for them to show what they have to the world... Anyway naila na bitaw ang Cebu and it doesn't mean wanay tourist manganhi sa Cebu just because we are number two... Then go to CamSur first before you start blabbering about "inaccurate" figures.
Hay, naa gyu'y mga tawo nga ang tan-aw sa Cebu kay perfect, walay makalupig, the best, pinakanindot. Wake up, there are a lot of places that are better than Cebu. Mao na'ng makaingon ang ubang probinsya nga kita sige'g reklamo nga imperial ang Manila nga kita mismo nagpaka-imperial.

Ug naa man gani'y makamention ug Cebu, second priority nana nila. zidlakan August 6th, 2009, 07:58 AM ^^They need to study geography again...
i'll take my cue from here :D the truth of the matter is, 95% of the people
actually know so little about geography. well, we studied it in elementary and
high school but that's just it. if we ask now, here, where mozambique is, or
which province pagadian city is located, many of us couldn't get it right unless
we google it or look at the map. if i ask you where the city of baku is, would
you know? that's the exactly the case if you ask a citizen of say, montenegro
or azerbaijan, about any city in the philippines - they'd give you a blank stare.
maybe they'll know manila but even that, some of them wouldn't know.
let's give the report the benefit of the doubt. i also have the same doubts as
Henz but i know enough of recording and statistics to know there must be a
plausible explanation for the figures. and it's only one quarter, a surge can
always occur. of course we wish the best for camsur and we hope they'll
continue their rise ... this is not about competition, this is about comple-
mentation. and tourism is a highly sectoral field, we should always focus on
a specific niche and target a specific tourist class ... we can't have all. our
direct competitor, locally, is boracay, regionally, phuket, thailand, and bali,
indonesia. in fact, i think we should our all out support to camsur. the more
destinations tourists find in a country, the more chances they come back.
please remember this, the major challenge in tourism is not to attract first
time visitors, but to ensure they come back, and come back, and back .. and
they tell their friends what a great experience they had and bright their
friends over. no one can destroy a tourist destination better than a dis-
satisfied or disgruntled tourist.
back to geography ... don't worry about the numbers. the important thing is,
when you're out there ... in japan, korea, china, europe, middle east, and
you're with a group of foreigners and mention a city's name, they wouldn't
stare at you with blank stares as they usually do. you simply say, "cebu,"
and they smile and say, "yes, yes, ... cebu ! ! !

c6josh August 6th, 2009, 08:07 AM hello guys i'm new in this thread and I read the disputes about camsur and cebu on who's number 1 in terms of tourism, well in my opinion I think cebu is number one in terms of its facilities and economy, you have various activities, accommodations, malls, universities etc... whereas camsur it only has one facility which is the wake boarding resort... what if wake boarding is just a trend then it will be the end of camsurs tourism...but of course that is only my opinion... no violent reactions...ok

Any update on the BRT FS? Any other good news nga pwede ra i-disclose, Sir?
i'll repost some from the BRT thread ...
DOTC already bidded out (successfully) for the Public Transport Strategic Master Plan Study for Metro Cebu. That means the project is definitely a go. We still have to wait for the WB and the ADB regarding their part of the deal to have a BRT FS in Cebu. The WB is supposed to take care of the Talamban line zidlakan mentioned in his posts while ADB is supposed to cover the SRP study. It seems the WB is dilly-dallying on this. Wala pa rin yung FS nila for Metro Manila that was supposed to be bidded out by the MMDA.not really. i got this july 31 ... "... We had a glitch regarding e-consult (the
bank's procurement system) which forced me to extend the deadline for
submission ... ... We have now completed the technical evaluations and will
invite the firms for the opening of the financial proposals-financial opening will
be in about 7-10 days ..." after this we will review then award, then start. ...
yeah, that's what i don't understand. the MM was supposed to be much
ahead. they already had a pre-FS done. i wonder what's keeping them.
if they delay further, there's a slim chance i might actually win the bet,
ha ha ha :D

Hay, naa gyu'y mga tawo nga ang tan-aw sa Cebu kay perfect, walay makalupig, the best, pinakanindot. Wake up, there are a lot of places that are better than Cebu.
Ug naa man gani'y makamention ug Cebu, second priority nana nila. Look, I'm not trying to bring Cebu down because no one can kay established naman g'yud ang Sugbo but kailangan lang g'yud ipamulat sa uban nga dili kadawat sa tinood nga daghan pa ug areas nga dapat iimprove ang Cebu. Mao ra.
no offense meant @ mike, but don't drag the issue of imperialism here. imperialism is not about this topic. we already know what we refer to as "imperialistic" bec. its more about government funding and expenditures and not about tourism rankings, promotions, tourism facilities, etc.
we called manila imperial because of the inefficiency of the government centered there to provide equal share of national wealth and not this TOURISM BRUHAHA thing!
manila would FOREVER AND EVER BE TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL-----IMPERIAL

Of course, the DOT data is questionable for you, you look for other sources then. go to airlines' data. try to check how many flights per day ang moadto sa camsur. call their local or provincial tourism office, and many other things para worth it naman ang imong pag angkon nga "you're a research guy"...

rau August 6th, 2009, 11:13 AM Cebu records highest foreign arrivals in RP (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=493419&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated August 06, 2009 12:00 AM
Other most frequently visited destinations included Boracay (383,813); Davao City (330,247); Puerto Galera (215,755); and Ilocos Norte with 99,747 tourist arrivals.

bai.... for your information.. we dont do research.. unless you pay us...And i guess if you would even pay us.. you cant afford...
and besides.. even yourself knew very well that Cebu has the most number of flights in the country...(why wouldnt you answer that question?). So, do we have to count also the buses that comes in Cebu?
dapat ikaw ang mag research and present it here....
I only say i doubt the figures.. and i believe it is valid enough..
How do u explain.. that Cebu who had been No. 1 from Jan. - March, and suddenly became No. 2 from Jan- June 2009 from Camsur.. who is not even at the Top 5 on those figure? trumping Cebu by almost 100,000 visitors...
Cant you understand that? I have made my clarifications and it speaks for itself.. just read it... I will repeat i am not anti-Camsur.. i just doubt the figures.. thats all!!!:bash::bash:

we google it or look at the map. if i ask you where the city of baku is, would

zidlakan August 6th, 2009, 01:59 PM ^^If Im not mistaken, Utility Duct as in Underground Powerlines? Wa koy idea about the term...hehe
Thaks @Zid...
can be ... but that particular duct contains only sewage lines and water lines
from the utility building to kawit. wala pa'y definite policy on underground
power lines sa SRP ... the prevailing discussion now is - underground where it
is necessary.
^^ nagkuwang gyud sa plano ang SRP...heheh! ...i wonder why wala ma-apil sa plano ang paghimo sa mga service roads....or, kuwang lang sa budget..heheh!
chicken and egg. old school site planning places everything in there which
constrains future development. the extreme opposite is not placing anything
until the final development shapes in. srp's plan is the middle ground -
framework planning - providing the barest basics then adding the support
infra as the configuration takes place.

bakasaurus August 6th, 2009, 02:02 PM Kataw-anan na man ning atoang thread. Hibulong lang ko nganon nisutoy. Naa na pod diay lalis. Hahaha.
Ako lang maingon. Precisely, if one has doubts, and would not take other's word for it, even the DOT's, then how can anyone here answer your doubting?
Best thing is you try to answer that by looking for info and facts by yourself, rather than insinuate something and expressing your own doubt for all people to read, which have implied meanings. Other parties may get offended so...
Frankness is not an excuse for refusing tact, when it is appropriate.

zidlakan August 6th, 2009, 02:16 PM sir zid. ask lng ko. kanang income nato diri sa whole cebu. pila ka percent ana ang ihatag sa national government?
nya pila ang percent na m.balik nato?
all income/taxes goes to national government. let me explain first - income or
tax that accrue to the national government are generally two major sources -
income taxes (personal and corporate), collected by BIR, and import tariff and
duties, collected by customs. there are many other minor levies and fees but
BIR and customs represent the bulk of collections. the BIR collection is called
internal revenue - 40% of these are returned back to the LGUs as internal
revenue allotment (IRA). the 60% plus the customs collections, plus all other
levies and fees (plus the utang) is used for national government budget. the
IRA is not returned to the LGUs in the proportion these are collected. these
are distributed to the provinces, cities, municipalities and barangays using
the formula in the local government code and in accordance with population,
land area, and equity. it seems unfair, i know, but if this is not done, many
of the smaller LGUs will barely survive ....
