how true!

but there lies the irony of it all ...

if the idealistic-minded voters ARE a minority, then their choice could not and
should not prevail. we still live in a democratic society and adhere to demo-
cratic principles, which espouses the will of the majority. the saddest thing
is this situation is that the best and most ideal candidate for president or any
other position may not even be a candidate at all because he or she is not
a politician, he he he.

so even if we have idealism in choosing which candidate to vote for, that
idealism is already diluted by the fact that we are limited to choose only
among those who ran. in other words, we are not really voting who is really
the best from among us, we are voting who we think is the best from among
those who ran - which are 9 persons out of million of filipinos.

my only point really is - use your vote wisely ...

a vote is a weapon to contribute to an outcome but it can be used two ways,
not one. firstly it can be used to select the candidate who you think will be
best to lead us. it can be used to help a candidate that you like win. but
on the other hand, it can be used to make sure a candidate whom you think
is bad for the country, will not win! he he he.

in most cases, these are mutually exclusive choices.

so vote wisely ...

if this is the case sir paul..... i cant actually discern na.. if we are really voting wisely............... hehehe ( morag mahitabo ani.. trial and error lang gyud gihapon ta.. di ba?)

Catholic priest found dead in motel (12:30 p.m.)

A CATHOLIC priest was found dead late Wednesday at a hotel on Manalili St. in Cebu City, the police reported Thursday.

Police said security guard Virgillo Sebelyeta found Salve's dead body on the bed, only wearing underwear and covered by a blanket. The door of Salve's room at Pacific Tourist Inn was also left open when he was discovered.

The Emergency and Rescue Unit Foundation (Eruf) attempted to revive the priest but failed. Doctors declared him dead upon reaching the Perpetual Succor Hospital.

Hotel personnel said two women in their 20s had informed the hotel's security guard that the priest suffered a heart attack inside his room. It wasn't clear however if the two informants were the priest's companions.

The hotel's record showed that Salve was alone when he checked in at room 256 of the hotel at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. He indicated in the hotel's log that he is from Davao City, when in fact he is a native of Carmen town in Cebu province.

Salve, who was assigned as parish priest of Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish at Pardo village in Cebu City, was last seen alive by his driver after he had asked to be dropped at SM mall Wednesday afternoon after attending a baptism in Labangon village.

Salve's body now lies at the St. Peter Funeral Parlor and will be brought by his family to his hometown in Carmen.

Episcopal Vicar Monsignor Esteban Binghay said Salve had a heart surgery about three to four years ago. However, he said he was not aware of Salve's activities outside of his pastoral duties.

Meanwhile, Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal has instructed Binghay to investigate the circumstances behind Salve's death. (Ian Joplin Virrey/UP Intern/Sunnex)

hmmmm .... allow me to relate to you an analogy. much as i wanted to share
my own personal thinking on the matter, i could not do so directly, i might be
charged with electioneering, he he he he. but try to compare what's actually
happening with what is theoritically happening in a two-party system such as
that of the U.S.

let's suppose you are a democrat. and let's go back in time to the months
before obama was elected president ... even before the primaries when obama
was facing hillary clinton for the party nomination.

now let's suppose you are a true-bloodied democrat and you really believe
hilary clinto should be president. you work for her campaign, you campaign
with all your might with all your friends to go for her ... everything that we
normally do when we support a candidate.

comes the primaries and clinton lost to obama, so obama became the demo-
crat candidate. now the question is asked - who will you support in the
elections? who will you vote for as the next president? if you are going to
help the campaign, will you be campaigning for the republican candidate?

those among us who are in the U.S. will tell you that in general, americans
will vote along party lines. either you're a democrat or you're a republican.
those who support clinton will invariably support obama in the primaries simply
because they don't want a republican president!

the truth of the matter is - even if you believe clinton is the best candidate
for president, you would vote for obama because - - it's either him or
maccain! and you don't want republican maccain to be president.

it's not similar here - we have a multi-party system and it's causing all these
mess, he he he. but in actuality, and most especially in this election, it's
becoming similar to the two-party system while we're nearing elections. just
wait for the last survey in april, about 2 to 3 weeks before elections and you
will see what i mean.

the question is, if there are only two men standing who will probably lug it
out in the final rounds, will you use your vote to still vote for your ideal
candidate even if his chances are almost nil, or will you use your vote to
vote for somebody you may not particularly like, but if only to ensure that
someone who will surely use government money for personal gain will not
get the presidency?

isip-isip ....

if i get it right... either you will vote for NoyNoy or Villar in this coming election. my analogy is that one will vote for NoyNoy if one doesn't like Villar to win because he might use government money for personal gain.

as for me, i'll vote for someone who others might think is weak and poor in surveys but in reality he is getting stronger as election date gets nearer because all the surveys are being manipulated and do not reflect the true sentiments of the Filipino people. I will not vote for a candidate who won't support charter change. With Gibo as president, I think Federalism has a chance or at least an enhanced regional autonomy. Di pareha sa uban candidates way klaro, not in their platform :)

Gibo Platform > Regional Autonomy

The Congress should determine how much autonomy they allow different regions. “So they have the power to realign internal revenue allotments to regions that can’t. But I oppose in giving autonomy to regions which are not prepared, because merely of a military conflict.”

IF ELECTED: Pelaez to transform Lapu-Lapu into a little Singapore (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=566982&publicationSubCategoryId=107)
By Garry B. Lao
(The Freeman)
Updated April 16, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - Lapu-Lapu City mayoralty candidate Efrain Pelaez likens himself to former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, who transformed his country into what it is now from an underdeveloped colonial outpost.

“I’m a little Lee Kuan Yew. I’m the guy who wants to change Lapu-Lapu City and that is my dream,” Pelaez told The FREEMAN in a recent “Know Your Candidates” forum.

If elected mayor, businessman-turned politician Pelaez said one of his goals is to convert the city into a “little Singapore” that will compete with neighboring countries.

Pelaez said the city’s west coast, which stretches from barangay Suba-Basbas to barangay Punta Engaño, is the city’s tourism zone.

Converting half of the island into a properly supervised tourism corridor is included in Pelaez’s 10-point agenda.

Pelaez intends to start by adopting the barangays along the coastline and making them model tourist zones by developing no less than 20 kilometers of a widened and paved highway from Punta Engaño to the boundary of Cordova.

Pelaez would also want to clean up the city, claiming that the clean and green program of the present administration has failed to do its job.

Paz Radaza, the wife of incumbent Mayor Arturo Radaza who heads the clean and green program, is also running for mayor.

“I’m here to clean up the city. I want to fulfill that dream. How can you invite investors into your city if it’s dirty? Look around,” Pelaez said.

Pelaez admitted it’s an “uphill battle” going up against the Radazas but remains optimistic he will win the race. (FREEMAN NEWS)

it seems to me that majority of the negative comments that need dire attention by hotel managers fall under cleanliness, customer service, convenience, and safety. and i think these are universal values whether you're are a domestic or foreign visitors.

i would expect an excellent customer service, cleaned surroundings and a hotel that provides me with great comfort and convenience. i dont care much about hotel food because that depends on one's taste. what taste good for me might taste awful to others. not unless the food is provided as complementary meal, otherwise i would want to sample the restaurants and cafes in a given area i visit.

as far as elevators are concerned on skyrise buildings here in the us, you need to use another elevator beyond 20 floors. except for the sears tower where they have elevators that will shoot you to the 100th floor in 60 seconds.

Talking about elevators, IMO when it comes to the viewing deck, it should have at least 2 dedicated express elevators and 2 or 3 elevators for hotel guests.

NY Empire State buildings have 2 dedicated elevators for tourists that transport passengers to the 86th floor viewing deck that carries about 30 passengers in about a minute.

On the previous NY Twin towers, the viewing tower had 2 dedicated elevators the caters to tourist and had a capacity of about 40 people sinardinas in a minute time. I had been there 3X. The other tower was NY State branch offices with 6 elevators that stops at 45th floor which 3 of them express stops from 30 to the 45th floor and the other 3 stops from 20 to 45, while the 6 across local ride rides with final stop at 20th. People just zigzag up to the remaing floors. :)

Manpower shortage slows BPO growth
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated April 19, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The problems on human resource supply continue to impede the Business Process Outsourcing industry in Cebu from achieving a fully-emerged status, this according to the Cebu Investment and Promotions Center (CIPC).

“To become an emerged international BPO destination, we need more people. We just don’t have enough people. Today, we don’t have to attract more BPO investors, because everybody is expanding, no one is downscaling, the problem is we don’t have human resource,” said CPIC managing director Joel Mari S. Yu.

According to Yu, if Cebu can produce 100 thousand people outright, existing BPO companies here will hire them all. However, because of shortage of manpower, existing BPO companies now are struggling to get people from outside of Cebu and neighboring provinces.

Cebu has been named as number one emerging BPO destination by Tholons for two consecutive years from 2008 and 2009. This time, the challenge of Cebu is to become an emerged destination for BPO.

In October of last year, Tholons, a leading full-service strategic advisory firm for Global Outsourcing Investments, released its latest report putting Cebu as number one Emerging Outsourcing City” in the world. This is for the second time around.

The same report in 2008, also put Cebu in the number position as an Emerging Outsourcing City, bested other cities in the world such as Shanghai and Beijing in China, Krakow in Poland, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

Yu said unless this manpower shortage will be addressed, Cebu can easily be deemed as the top BPO destination in the world.

At present, Cebu only employs a total of 60 thousand people working for the BPO related companies. In Metro Manila on the other hand, the industry employs over 500 thousand people.

Cebu produces an average of 23 thousand graduates a year, supposed five percent will quality to immediately work in BPO companies, Yu said “we can only supply 1,500 people a year,” Yu said.

Including graduates of informal training programs established by private companies and some BPO in-house training facilities, Cebu can only provide 5,000 people than can immediately qualify for BPO jobs.

“The problem is still human resource. We don’t have enough people. One of the requirements in achieving an emerged destination, is the availability of manpower,” Yu said.

In his recent visit to Cebu Avinash Vashista, chief executive officer and founder Tholons urged Cebu to strengthen its manpower niche in order to sustain, or improve its position as leading BPO destination in the world.

The scale and quality of the manpower here is tremendous,” Vashista commented, adding that while India
and China’s local workforce maybe “ten to twenty times more” than in Cebu, the latter’s IT employers have proven themselves to be of world-class quality.

Cebu’s strength in having high quality workforce, he noted, has been a significant factor in the province’s ranking last year by Global Services and Tholons’ as the number one emerging BPO destinations among 50 key cities in the world.

“Cebu is now a leader among emerging BPO destinations but Cebu has to move and become one of the emerged destinations,” Vashista challenged local ICT players.

Vashista pointed out that in the bid to be among the line of emerged BPO cities in the world, Cebu has to further protect its manpower supply by engaging in more programs that will enhance the quality of its IT and IT-related graduates to increase their probability to be hired by IT and BPO companies.

No Cha-cha under Noynoy – Roxas
By ROY MABASA
April 17, 2010, 7:45pm

There will be no Charter change (Cha-cha) under the Aquino-Roxas administration.

This was the statement made by Liberal Party vice presidential bet Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II as he expressly pointed out that instead of giving priority to tackling any amendments in the Philippine Constitution, he and LP standard-bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III will concentrate on the country’s economy and to generate jobs for the Filipinos.

“Charter change is not our priority. We will first focus on invigorating the economy so more businessmen will be persuaded to invest in the country,” Roxas said in a radio interview last Saturday.

According to Roxas, chronic graft and corruption – fostered by a rotten system of governance in the country – is on top of their “to-do list.”

“Part of our agenda is to rid the Bureau of Customs and the Bureau of Internal Revenue of corrupt employees,” Roxas pointed out.

Roxas also assured that under the Aquino-Roxas administration, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s hopes of becoming the House speaker will be dashed.

“If we will win, we will make sure President Arroyo would not be elected as speaker of the House,” Roxas stressed, echoing the same promise of Nacionalista Party (NP) presidential candidate Sen. Manny Villar.

Likewise, Roxas expressed deep concern over the admissions by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) that results of the May 10 automated elections would be known in three days, contrary to earlier pronouncements that final poll results will be known in an instant.

Roxas said the Comelec should stick to its original two-day time frame for the announcement of election results, stressing any extension would further heighten fears of massive election fraud.

Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez was earlier quoted as saying the results of the election tally would be announced only after the canvassing at the municipal and provincial levels are completed, which is expected to take about 2 to 3 days after the elections.

Before this new timeline for the announcement of the results of the elections, Jimenez announced that results of the voting would be known within 48 hours.
“These are scary developments in the AES,” Roxas said.

Roxas also questioned the statement of Jimenez that computation of the results in the precinct level – the first stage of the canvassing – would have to be done by the political parties because the poll body was not required to total the results of the precinct voting or to post the consolidated results of the voting in real time on a website.

Jimenez has announced the yet-to-be-disclosed website would contain only unconsolidated results from the 76,000 precincts nationwide.

The Comelec would likewise not provide a running tally on the website.

“Are we going back to manual election? Elections have been automated for speedy result and to stop cheating,” Roxas said.

Roxas said posting the final tally in the website would be helpful to the Senate and the House of Representatives, convened as a National Board of Canvassers, in the tabulation and consolidation of the results of the May 10 elections.

“Posting the results in the presidential and vice-presidential race would determine if there is any discrepancy between the Comelec’s and Congress’ tally,” he said, stressing this would likewise serve as a deterrent to possible tampering of the votes.

The LP bet said he expects the Arroyo administration and its allies to attempt to stop him and Aquino from winning in the elections.

Aquino and Roxas have cited alarming lapses in the preparations for the automated polls, such as questionable source code review requirements, electricity supply problems, absence of means to verify ultra-violent marks in official ballots, uncertain conduct of a random manual audit, absence of a clear back-up plan, and an unfair ballot design, among others.

The LP tandem said such slip-ups could be part of an administration-hatched “grand scheme” to tamper with the results of the May 10 polls.

“The public should continue to be vigilant. The elections would be the way towards genuine reform and change. We are sick and tired of crooked governance,” Roxas said.

Goodbye Federalism under Noynoy/Mar.:ohno:

In any case, lets just vote whom do we think would be beneficial for Cebu and the rest of the countryside.

A quiet sense of optimism rules
CERITALAH By KARIM RASLAN

Cebu is slowly moving forward, powered by the many call centres and Business Process Outsourcing offices, its newest and most dynamic sector.

THE 2010 Philippine General Election scheduled for May 10 will be hotly contested. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has been President for nine years. She cannot stand again and the country is eager for change. Moreover, the Philippines, with over 95 million inhabitants, is one of South-east Asia’s sleeping giants.

The front-runner – and by a comfortable margin – is “Noynoy” Aquino, and his main challenge once he secures Malacanang Palace will be to transform this poverty-ridden nation.

The Philippines’ second largest city, Cebu, in the central region of the Visayas, may well hold the key to the country’s future.

Cebu has a population of just over 800,000 people – two million if one includes suburbs like Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Talisay.

With a bustling port and airport, Cebu is a major trading, tourist and logistics hub for the country’s central zone – the Visayan Islands.

“Cebuanos” are proud people and they don’t necessarily like or respect the capital, Manila.

As Cherry Lim, the Business Editor of the Sun Standard (the city’s largest paper) says: “We’re very business-like in Cebu. We don’t go for big rallies and demos.” [sun standard? could be sun star]

Cebuanos remind me of Penangites. They like their independence and believe in sorting things out themselves.

Indeed, Cherry adds: “Nowadays we don’t even need to fly through Manila to leave the country.

“There are direct flights to Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, Doha and Kuala Lumpur.”

The city is set along the east coast of the long and narrow Cebu Island. There is a ridge of mountains dividing east from west. These hills and valleys are picturesque.

Cebu is also an example of how the Philippines is slowly moving forward.

There’s a quiet sense of optimism. The city’s economy is supported by its services sector – something that the Filipinos do well.

There are countless hotels serving the rich and populous north Asian markets, especially Koreans.

Having spent some time travelling through the peaceful and very beautiful Visayan islands – and especially Bohol – I am convinced that they will become a very attractive destination, competing with Langka-wi, Phuket and Bali.

At the same time, Cebu has long been a key logistical hub for the southern half of the republic. The port is busy and there are warehouses and godowns crammed with goods.

Still, the newest and most dynamic sector is the city’s many call centres and BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) offices.

Indeed, BPO may prove to be the Philippines’ future growth path. In Cebu alone, it is estimated that the sector employs well over 20,000 people, all of whom are earning good salaries which are twice the minimum wage of 267 pesos (RM19.32) a day.

Business has been good. As a result, profits have skyrocketed: the Philippines’ BPO industry had revenues of US$7.22bil (RM23.2bil) in 2009.

Cebu’s contribution to that was around US$650mil (RM2.09bil), thereby ensuring a substantial injection of funds into local property, retailing and service sectors.

Of course the largest concentration of BPO facilities is actually in the Metro Manila area, with Ortegas’ forest of tower-blocks leading the way.

Nonetheless, growth centres like Cebu are also helping the Philippines keep its workers at home, rather than joining the “Balikbayan” abroad. Indeed, Cebu’s AsiaTown IT Park is now buzzing with young workers in outsourcing industries.

Two Cebuanos I met, “French Boy” and “Shialo Jane” (both twenty-somethings) were quite happy to be part of AsiaTown.

They are both degree holders, starting off with a salary of 5,000 pesos [5k? i dont think so! basin 15k ni, but im not sure, 5k is like so very low by industry standard] (RM361.83) which will quickly rise to 10,000 and beyond upon confirmation.

This is a major paradigm shift: decades ago, both would have been forced to seek less attractive work overseas. Now, they have a chance to earn a good, middle-class salary at home.

How did this happen? Part of this can be attributed to political leadership. While President Gloria Arroyo’s administration has been mired in corruption, provinces like Cebu have been powering ahead.

Cherry claims that Noynoy’s running mate, Senator “Mar” Roxas, was especially influential. Under his patronage, “they convened a conference back in 2002, now there are all these new jobs and money pumping into the local economy: especially property and retailing.”

What has all this got to do with Malaysia?

For one thing, it shows that our neighbours are beginning to stir. They are unlocking the energies of their people – using the latest technology to move ahead.

In short, the Philippines and Indonesia are poor but they’re growing fast, creating a vast pool of consumers.

Wandering around AisaTown made me think back to our own much vaunted, software mega project in Cyberjaya. Wasn’t Cyber-jaya supposed to be our gateway to the services sector. What has happened?

Why are the Filipinos now dominating this sector in South-east Asia?

It is arguable that we are being held back by inefficiency, over-regulation and stubborn political resistance to even basic liberalisation.

In order for us as a nation to tap the emerging growth in countries like the Philippines we are going to have to become far more attuned and sensitive to local demands.

The obsession with Malay rights will not help us win future market-share. We Malaysians need to take a good hard look at the state of our economy and decide whether we have what it takes to ensure that it stays competitive.

Ayala group wants 40 hectares in SRP (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=568424&publicationSubCategoryId=107)
(The Freeman)
Updated April 21, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - While opposition leaders in Cebu City are busy criticizing Mayor Tomas Osmeña for alleged mismanagement of the city and blaming the South Road Properties as the cause of the city’s financial ruin, the mayor announced that the Ayala Group of Companies even offered to buy 40 hectares of land at the SRP.

The mayor made the announcement during his political sortie in Barangay Pasil last Monday night in reaction to the criticism of businessman Jonathan “Atan” Guardo, his main opponent for the city’s south congressional district.

Guardo the other day launched his so-called “Lapok campaign” aimed at discouraging voters from supporting Osmeña and the other candidates of the Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan because he claimed that they failed to attend to the needs of the people during their term.

Guardo’s 30-second video, which will be shown on television days from now, shows the 295-hectare of reclaimed lands as mere lapok or mud and hampering the delivery of the supposed basic services for the people because the city is paying P800 million every year for its debt to Japan.

“Hangtud kanus-a pa ang syudad mag-antus sa lapok?” Guardo asked, adding that the city officials should create a team of experts to look for better ways on how to develop the SRP.

Osmeña, who used to be the vice president of a real estate company in the United States in 80’s, just laughed off Guardo’s suggestions.

The mayor said there is even an offer from the Ayala Group of Companies to buy 40 hectares of lands at the SRP at the same price SM Prime Holdings Inc. and Filinvest Land Inc. paid the city, but Osmeña said he has decided not to accept the offer yet.

The present price for a square meter at the SRP ranges from P8,000 to P15,000 depending on its location, but Osmeña said he wants the city to stop selling lots until after FLI and SM Prime Holdings will start constructing their projects at their purchased lots.

FLI will construct high-rise hotels and condominiums in its 50-hectare lot subject to a joint venture agreement with the city, while SM Prime Holdings also pledged to build a giant mall and other infrastructure projects in its 34 hectares that was purchased at P2.7 billion. – Rene U. Borromeo/BRP

This is very true... Days before arriving in Malaysia, I thought I have a feeling that they look down on us... thinking of Sipadan, Sabah migrants, Abu Sayafe...etc, pero as a surprise, they treat us as the most beautiful among Southeast Asian races...;) If Taiwanese look down on us, Malaysians' are different, for them Filipinos are well educated, beautiful, artists, singers and they always reiterate that the Philipine is very beautiful country specially the beaches are clearer than our beaches here in M'sia... like a Langkawi local said that the Pilipin is more beutiful than Langkawi... (siya nay gasulti, wana tay mahimo...lol)

right! according to my effeminate cousin who stayed in kuala lumpur and singapore for several months, he said that malaysians really adore filipinos A LOT! take note, A LOT daw. when he handed over his passport to the malaysian immigrant officers, they couldn't believe he was a male coz his physical appearance resembles that of a girl. they even said 'maganda filipina' to him. and they took pictures of him its as if he was a celebrity! no wonder why christian bautista, regine velazquez and even manny pacquiao is highly adored by malaysians!

Cebuanos remind me of Penangites. They like their independence and believe in sorting things out themselves.

Agree, agree, agree...lol

true! that is why its best for Cebu to be federated because we couldn't be totally independent unless we still keep on knocking at Manila's footsteps just to fund our dream projects that probably would only end up being junked, delayed, or reduced to eternal damnation by the northern culprits!

^^^^ I think inspite of the governmental set-up in the Philippines, Cebu is already exhibiting it's resiliency and showed alot of potential when it comes to progress. We are all witnessing all these and thank you for all these foreign investors who started to see the potential in building their empire in Cebu. I have never yet seen so much progress outside Manila anywhere else in the Philippines other than in Cebu. Sometimes, in just a couple or three years time span I was able to see Cebu, the difference in that short time frame has always been remarkable.

That picture of panoramic penang would seems to be a good example of how cebu's skyline would look in the future. The only thing is that we are already now seing the hills in Cebu being tored up in favor of urban development. I hope Cebu would still be able to hang to it as long as it can posibly can.

Yellow - circumferential road with a minimum of four lanes, all with center islands and a bicycle lane.....

red - the blvrd. that stretches from the old bridge to marigindon...a minimum of 6 lanes w/ a center island..

cyan - a new road (hopefully!) that would traverse the interior part of mactan island, easing the traffic flow in the very chaotic and crowded center of lapu lapu city...this is a collector road in which the traffic flow from the interior streets of the residential areas and commercial districts of lapu lapu city and cordova will connect....this should have at least a minimum of 6 lanes...

As what I heard from Timex people who were former applicants for Seagate, the supposed to be investment of Seagate was affected by the Asian financial crisis (at this point investment was still poured) and having Erap as the president on the post-Asian crisis made the situation worst (at this point, the investment was totally cancelled).

A good lesson and reminder for us to choose our next leader carefully and intellectually. If Lito Osmena won that time and suceeded by GMA, I guess, Philippines is now in a better state... :)

Rama vows to make Cebu ‘tourist city’ (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/rama-vows-make-cebu-%E2%80%98tourist-city%E2%80%99)
Wednesday, April 21, 2010

One of Rama’s objectives is to push for a massive tourism project for Cebu that would entail order and development in the city’s roads, traffic and coastal areas, and the enhancement of the city’s heritage.

Preserve

“There are so many establishments in Cebu that need to be preserved because of the history they bear. Colon, the country’s oldest street, is one example,” Rama said.

He said improving the image of areas in the city will not only preserve the city’s heritage but also build confidence among tourists as they roam the city.

As for the South Road Properties, Rama said he will use every area of it to become an added attraction to tourists.

“The coastal areas should be utilized and more infrastructure should be put up to further boost the income of the city,” he said, referring to the real estate projects, high-rise condominiums, convention centers and other investments devoted to the property.

Rama expressed his intention of sitting with members of the business chambers of Cebu to discuss the concerns of the different sectors, particularly the export and micro, small and medium enterprises sectors.

Mayor rejects request to reset SRP launch
(The Freeman) Updated April 23, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - Mayor Tomas Osmeña has rejected his sister’s request to postpone the week-long grand launching of the South Road Properties next month because all the preparations are already in place.

Georgia, who is running for mayor in Cebu City, believes that the SRP week-long grand launching starting on May 1 to 8 is just part of the political propaganda of the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan.

However, the mayor said the event is open to the public, including his critics and the candidates of the opposition Kugi Uswag Sugbo.

SRP manager Nagiel Bañacia said they have lined-up several activities for the week-long celebration including “tartanilla” and “trisikad” race, volleyball, soccer, softball, motocross exhibition, boxing and mixed martial arts exhibition and drag race in order to add colors to the event.

The martial arts exhibition and as well as the other games will be performed during the culmination on May 8, where Osmeña is scheduled to give a peep talk.

Another event highlights are the grand barbecue cook out, fireworks Guinness record attempt of most rockets of firecrackers to be fired. Bañacia said the city will only spend less than P1 million for the activity after Osmeña has decided to contribute P420,000 for the expenses of the nightly concerts.

But even if the city will have to spend P1 million for the activity, Osmeña said during a press conference, the amount is still fair because it is the launching of the SRP project. Osmeña explained that P1 million is just about 100 square meters of SRP lot.

Bañacia said there will be video presentations on Filinvest Land Development along Pond F and the Joint Venture area with the city, while the city will also present the development plans of SM Prime Holding Inc.:banana::banana:

During the culmination of the activity Osmeña will thanks all party supporters for their sacrifices during the campaign that will end on May 8. The initial plan is for Osmeña to present all the BOPK candidates after his short speech.

A free transportation will be provided by the city government for those who would like to attend the event. Osmeña said a shuttle service will be stationed at the City Hall, Mambaling SRP access road, Fuente Osmeña, Bulacao, SM City and Ayala Center.

Since the city is expecting thousands in attendance, members of the Marines Reserve Battalion and Barangay Intelligence Network will be deployed to augment the police in the maintenance of peace and order. — Rene U. Borromeo with reports from Jessica Pareja/FPL

TALKING TRAVEL WITH G1BO TEODOROhttp://travelifemagazine.blogspot.com/2010/04/talking-travel-with-gilbert-teodoro.html

Managing Editor Jon Vicente (JV): How did travel and living abroad shape your personality?

Gibo: It made me less insular and more open to change. Living abroad makes you realize you need to compete worldwide, and that the world is not a static thing revolving around the Philippines, but vice-versa. It makes you more liberal in terms of accepting a need for greater interconnection amongst countries. The world’s getting to be a smaller place. There’s freedom to migrate, there’s freedom of capital flow, there’s freedom of cross-border services. The sooner we wake up to that reality, probably the sooner the ‘brain drain’ and migration problems get remedied.

Travelife Chairman Keiichi Miki (KM): What’s your favorite hideaway place with your family?

Gibo: Internationally, Singapore and Hong Kong for the food. We were able to go to the Maldives once and the United States once, but it was more for a working visit. London and Honolulu are good places too. Turkey was memorable. We were childless then and we spent two weeks in a bus touring Turkey. No way am I doing that in a bus again! Mactan Island is also good.

JV: If elected president, what are your plans for Philippine tourism?

Gibo: Number one is to implement the new tourism act. I think it’s an all-encompassing act regarding our strategic direction. Number two, complementary infrastructure for tourism. I do not agree that islands with limited carrying capacity and sustainability should be made more accessible - quite the contrary.

We should begin looking more into high-value tourism. We had that market before, the Japanese market, and we lost it. So, we should invest more in high-value tourism and medical tourism, and provide complementary infrastructure for it. Through the tourism act, I think we’re trying to fill the gap in shortfall with respect to facilities. I think in 2008, when Thailand had domestic problems, a lot of tourists wanted to redirect to the Philippines—in Phuket-type destinations. But we could only accommodate so much, not only in terms of hotels, but in terms of airports. People are looking at Terminal 3, when what’s needed is an additional runway. It takes 45 minutes in peak time to get off and land right now. It’s a problem. In Cebu for example, with its single runway: what happens if it gets inundated? I think those things should be examined. I’m going to work with the industries involved, to get as many quality tourists as possible.
Travelife Board Member Andrew Masigan (AM): What is your vision of Manila as a world-city? I heard about the Php208 Billion Plan.

I also would like to encourage consolidation in the tourism industry in terms of government policy. Each and every town already has a festival. There should probably be some consolidation because sometimes you need a bit of contrivance in tourism. The perfect contrivances for me are Bali and Langkawi -- they were able to shape their culture. There should be more of a cultural renaissance in the Philippines, in terms of indigenous diversity.

JV: Is it just about marketing?

Gibo: Not only marketing; however there is a marketing problem. We certainly can market certain areas, which are ready for tourism, such as Cebu or Bohol. And every travel advisory is a problem. But how do we deal with the travel advisory? Rather than deal with the problem underlying the travel advisory, we get angry. So, there’s some sort of a disconnect in the way we approach things.

CC: What will you do about NAIA 3 if you become President?

Gibo: We’ll have to solve a whole gamut of problems first before that. I say again, the NAIA 3 terminal is the smallest part of NAIA’s problem. The runway is the problem. Traffic is also a problem. You’ll have to get the support facilities in first.

How many people come to Manila in the first place? I think for tourism, minimal. Manila is for business, rather than for tourism. Panglao is on track, I think, it’s going to be able to accept bigger types of aircraft. Mactan, we need another runway because it’s a hub. Davao can already accept large aircraft. They can accommodate the Airbus A340 but not the series 400. Sulu and Tawi-tawi have very promising runways, 2,800 meters, which were just inaugurated.

Gibo: No, the Php 208 billion plan is really to save Manila from disasters, not to make it competitive. What Manila should be is a high-value and quality service provider: Value-service, Service provider. Not manufacturing anymore. It should be a business destination, a business hub. Our laws are quite restrictive in that end. We once had the opportunity to make Manila one of the best financial, legal, and design centers for services. This is what Manila should be, but right now, people are even more optimistic in Cebu.

JV: What specific places would you focus on developing in the Philippines?

Gibo: The Visayas area. That’s already the tourism area of the Philippines. In northern Luzon, there’s Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Sta. Ana. For wellness, the Cordillera Area is like Ubud in Bali, Indonesia, but it needs some time, because weatherproof roads are an issue. And access by air is also an issue because of fogging. Also, if you build roads, security problems disappear by 50%. Access is important for anti-insurgency purposes.

JV: Is the Philippines ready for a philosopher-king?

Gibo: Probably there’s too many of them already (laughs).

JV: Which one do we need? The businessman-king? The lawyer-king?
Gibo: I think the Philippines needs a lot of realists. There’s too much misplaced idealism in the country, to the point of hypocrisy. For example, the way we treat our public servants. We have the ideal of the public servant—the super human being without any material needs whatsoever and who will devote 24/7 to the welfare of the country. That doesn’t work anymore. And the problem is that the Philippines always wants a free ride. We should really live up to the fact that there’s no free lunch in the world. There are costs.

We could increase financial incentives for doing good. For example, we can start with the bonus system. Why don’t we have lump sum personal services appropriation per department and let the policy of the department work to how a bonus is given? We should do that, but we don’t because we have salary gauges.

JV: Besides your campaign team, what is a must-bring on your travels?
CC: What can’t you leave home without?

Gibo: Not a laptop, not a Blackberry. It’s a book and probably a blanket.

CC: How do you cope with such hectic travel? Do you have a secret?

Gibo: Just look forward to the next time you have peace and quiet. That’s what keeps you going.

CIPC wants Chong Hua at SRP (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=569260&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
By Ehda M. Dagooc
(The Freeman)
Updated April 24, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Investment and Promotions Center (CIPC), the marketing arm of the South Road Properties, is inviting Chong Hua Hospital to invest at SRP.

CIPC managing director Joel Mari S. Yu said they chose Chong Hua Hospital because it is the only Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospital in Cebu and the third hospital in the country to have acquired the accreditation.

Yu said it is important for SRP to have a world-class hospital component to complement the residential condominium and other upcoming facilities in the area, which will be built by SM Prime Holdings and Filinvest Land Inc.

FLI’s development plan includes commercial and retail complexes, fine dining restaurants and fastfood outlets at the beach promenade area, six medium-rise residential buildings and a central park will be constructed on the 10-hectare joint venture area, which is only a fraction of the 40-hectare Citta di Mare.

FLI bought 10.6 hectares at the SRP last year and entered into a joint venture agreement with the Cebu City government to develop another 40 hectares. Just last month, the city granted FLI the ownership of a 2.6-hectare lot after the latter paid an additional P72.5 million.

Meanwhile, SM Holdings will be investing at least P20 billion for a mixed-used development project on the 30-hectare lot it bought at the SRP. SM’s development plan will include residential communities, hotels, a convention center, hospital, school and a shopping mall that will occupy 250,000 square meters of the area.

Yu said being a JCI-accredited hospital makes Chong Hua a perfect pick for the SRP as future owners of the condominium units at the SRP are expected to be largely composed of foreign retirees who would prefer the services of an internationally accredited health institution.

JCI is a body that accredits hospitals and health care providers outside the United States that have internationally standard services. This is also one of the requirements for a health care facility to officially accommodate medical tourists around the world.

In an earlier interview with CHH chief executive officer (CEO) Lim Liu, he said the immediate plan of CHH is to expand the existing facility located at the midtown area of Cebu City.

Initially, the hospital will invest P100 million for a six-story car park building.

Yu said if they cannot get Chong Hua to invest at SRP, they might as well invite St. Luke’s Hospital in Manila to put up a similar facility at the SRP.

Notwithstanding the issues that may shake the future of the SRP, especially with the inevitable change in leadership of Cebu City following the elections come May 10, Yu said CIPC is still doing its best to market SRP and continue inviting locators to the special economic zone.

SRP is seen to generate an added P1 billion annually to Cebu City’s coffers, which if realized will make Cebu City as the wealthiest LGU in the Philippines.

Plan to create Mactan Province gains mayoralty bet’s support
CEBU CITY, April 26 (PNA) - Nacionalista Party (NP) mayoralty aspirant Junard Chan of Lapu-Lapu City is supporting the plan to turn Mactan Island, which hosts an international airport, economic zones and world-class beaches, hotels and resorts, into a separate province.

”The island is rich. We can qualify and we can stand as a separate province,” Chan said.

He said converting the island into a province should be the priority concern of the elected congressman of the lone district Lapu-Lapu City.

The town of Cordova is part of Mactan but belongs to Cebu’s 6th district that includes Mandaue City and Consolacion.

Former Sen. Sonny Osmena suggested during the 2007 election that Mactan Island should become a separate province with Olango island as its municipality.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza, Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Lito Ruiz and former city councilor and lawyer Eugenio Espedido are racing to become Lapu-Lapu’s first congressman.

Chan said the situation of Cordova is a little complicated because the town belongs to the sixth district.

But a solution can be found if the elected congressman works hard in converting the island into a province.

If it becomes a province, he said the island will enjoy an increase in the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) and stronger authority over the Mactan-CebU International Airport Authority and over the Mactan Economic Zones and create more jobs for island residents. nice building!

my sister is part of the team particularly the landscaping... Go Green building!

Nice, it looks like they have some kind of brise soleil on the exterior. I wonder if they are going through a LEED Certification process? I'm curious about the water and energy conservation measures that they are incorporating into the building. I coordinated a LEED Gold certified building here in California and the process was so fun and interesting as well as frustrating and torturous.
It would add to the marketability and prestige of the building if it is LEED certified not to mention the bragging rights! I wish I'm in the Philippines and can offer this service.
I do know that if you achieve a certain treshold in water savings for your landscaping you get to earn points. You can use drought tolerant plants and utilize programmable irrigation controllers with sensors. Tips for your sister:).
The Camotes pictures are beautiful! My cousin and his family are coming to Cebu next month and my sister and her family later this year. Maybe they will get to go. I'm envious.

SRP to have water sports facility (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=570146&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
By Ehda M. Dagooc
(The Freeman)
Updated April 27, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - Despite the barrage of criticisms from political rivals on Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s alleged “mismanagement” of the South Road Properties, the Cebu Investment and Promotions Center responds to the allegations with updates on investments at the SRP.

CIPC, the marketing arm of SRP, led by its managing director Joel Mari Yu said there will be more exciting developments at the SRP, one of which is the upcoming water sports recreational facility.

Yu said the City government is now on the final stages of negotiations with a well-known developer to set up a water sports facility at the SRP. Yu, however, stopped short of revealing further details of the transaction as talks are still ongoing.

“We cannot reveal the names of the developer but we are talking to them right now and they have shown interest to develop Pond A,” Yu said.

Yu said the planned water sports facility will feature wake boarding activities. The facility will occupy 15 hectares in Pond A, a lake spanning 60-hectares located at the SRP.

“It will really give more charm for SRP. A water sports facility will also be an exciting development in that area,” he stressed.

On the other hand, Yu revealed that SRP now only has 76-hectares of unsold lots and he is encouraging interested investors to “buy now or regret later” as Osmeña plans to double the price of the unsold lots following the latest deal between the city and SM Prime Holdings Inc.

This means that interior lots that cost P8, 000 per square meter will now be sold at P16, 000 per square meter and those located along the road will go up from P11, 000 per square meter to P15, 000 per square meter.

Osmeña earlier said that the move to increase the selling price of the SRP lots is a “consequence for future buyers,” adding that it is the City Government’s way of protecting SM Prime’s initial investment since it will not be easy once competition comes in.

Joint-venture deals with Filinvest Land Inc. (52 hectares) and SM Prime Holdings (32 hectares) are now generating an estimated of P1 billion in amortizations for the city. The amount covers almost half of the P2 billion annual operating budget of Cebu City

Meanwhile, the construction of a fast ferry terminal at the former Kawit Island will soon kick off, which will be the cornerstone development of the whole SRP.

Fast ferry operator Ocean Jet is set to launch their ferries from SRP to Tagbilaran City in Bohol and Dumaguete City in Oriental Negros.

The SRP was built using borrowed funds from the JBIC, now the Japan International Cooperation Agency, with the Land Bank of the Philippines as conduit bank.

Yu said once fully-developed, SRP will become the ultimate landmark of Cebu; at the same time become a largest revenue contributor of the City.

i also dont want mactan to be separate from cebu. but its up to the residents of mactan island.

i doubt. i have many relatives and friends in mactan and they don't want to be separated from cebu. there is no point of supporting a mactan province because mactan is doing well.

Not only residents of Mactan will decide on it but the entire people of Cebu. A plebiscite will be held if such law was passed in Congress.

right. Cebu mainland will also decide the fate of 'Mactan Province' so from this early on, there is no compelling reason for Mactan to separate itself from Cebu!:bash::bash:

maayo pud siguro nga higayonan nila ug sporting area ang srp cuz that can draw big crowds and promote business sa tibuok syudad kon dunay regular sporting venue of world class standard. ang cebu city sports center mora ug karaan nakaayo ug gamay na tungod sa kadaghan na nga mo attend sa mga events hold in cebu.

the platform of the green team do have some urban issues that's very important for cebu's continued growth and development and continue to be the premier province in the country. cebu is the new flag bearer for the philippines.
