CIPC: Bid out smaller SRP lots (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/cipc-bid-out-smaller-srp-lots)
Saturday, July 10, 2010
By Katlene O. Cacho
THE Cebu Investments and Promotion Center (CIPC) will be proposing to Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama the bidding out of 10 small lots of the South Road Properties (SRP) to interested investors.
The plan came after local investors expressed interest to CIPC to buy smaller lots in the SRP. CIPC is the marketing arm of SRP.
“In the last few months of Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s administration, I told him many have expressed interest in buying small lots in SRP. So, I told him why don’t we test and cut a small area of about 10 lots with lot cuts of 2,000 to 3,000 square meters and have it bid out?” said CIPC managing director Joel Mari Yu in an interview Thursday at the Casino Español.
Location
He told reporters the 10 lots would generate close to P1 billion in revenues as its retail floor price for bidding is pegged at P30,000 per square meter. These small lots, Yu said are located beside the SM properties.
“Investors now may put up commercial buildings in the area. However, they are advised to still follow the development plan of the SRP,” Yu said.
CIPC will still present the plan to Rama and as soon as it is approved, it will be presented to the public right away. “A map will be drawn on where these lots are located and will be shown to the people,” he said.
Aside from offering small lots in SRP, Yu said the CIPC is planning to invite St. Luke’s Medical Center to invest in the SRP.
Offer
“We will find a way to talk with St. Luke’s. We could offer it as a joint venture and even provide the land,” he said. Yu said they also approached some big hospitals in the city but they declined the offer due to insufficient funds.
The St. Luke’s plan, he said will also be presented to Rama.
St. Luke’s Medical Center is one of the country’s top medical facilities in such fields as cardiovascular medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, and cancer treatment.
Among the companies that have invested in SRP are the Bigfoot, SM Prime Holdings Inc. and Filinvest Land Inc.
MORE POWER TO ALL CEBUANO,S IN THE WHOLE WORLD....

why not support and upgrade the status of the city's very own cebu city medical center into a world class medical facility that is pro poor and indigent. ang makapatambal successfully dinha sa st. luke kana rang may mga kuwartahan nga maka-afford sa sophisticated treatment nga ilang gigamit not because theyre really good at servicing those who cant afford. basta kuwarta na ang padaganon sa healthcare belib kaayo ta nga maayo.
gipanghambog na sa akong mga kauban diri nga maayo kuno ug ako silang gipangutana pila man sad inyong gastos. minilyon pud ka pesos nahurot sab ilang savings.

ang foreign tourists mo belib sa quality sa atong mga medical facilities nga world class kon kini naka ayo sa iyang katawhan mismo. pero kon dato ra ang maka avail sa iyang facility no foreign tourists mo belib ana as far as westerners or europeans ang imong pangutan-on.
sometimes exaggerated ra kaayo nang advertisement dinha sa medical tourism nga mora ra ug sa mailad lang. akong kauban nga taga manila ning-uli dinha kay magpa noselift. karon iyang ilong mo ra ug palwa nga ning lis-ngak ug samot unya ang nose bridge ning budlot ug nahiwi. kana product sa atong medical tourism.

As in seriously, I have been waiting for them to fulfill their promises all these years. The boulevards, the palm lined streets with ample bike paths lined with trees to shade the walkers/bikers.

Executives did not want to have an elaborate wall design because it distracts audiences... Standard IMAX (R) design is just plain... kaya you enjoy the movie :) not the walls

Dili man tingali pod ko muagree nga super kabati bai. Haha. Most are paved baya pod. Especially ang M. Quezon HIghway is actually nice with the rows of bougainvillea in the island. Ang uban lang na parts. But the one you specifically mentioned (going to Bluereef, Ocean Pearl) is actually a very minor road that is leading to private resorts and I think that it should be the least priority of the government kay naa pay lain nga mas important na roads to fix. I would think nga these resorts (who did a really BAD job at developing the coastal part there) should have had to share in the burden kay sila baya ang dako og profits ani.

Not really part-owner but part-operator lang.
Anyway, here's a post about IMAX SM North EDSA (http://www.byahilo.com/2009/07/17/experience-harry-potter-in-imax-only-at-sm-north-edsa/). It also has lights on its walls

That is so true. As a frequent movie-goer, I hate those distracting lights on the sides. Heck, even the fire exit signs in some theaters annoy me so I'm glad SM has considered the interest of the movie-goers.

yes i agree...ganahan man gani ko anang dalan padong sa marigondon beach, kanang padong sa plantation bay bah, kay nindot pagka-aspalto nya limpyado pod nang mga nagbalay sa kilid sa dalan kay pirme jud nang lipyo kada agi nako...nya murag naay juy tropical feel tungod sa mga bougainvilla and uban tanom sa sides, and ang kagamay sa iyang dalan og pagkamingaw, naghatag og a feeling of adventure and seclusion from the rest...ang akong dili ganahan diha kay ang resorts mismo, kay daghan seawall, daghang gicemento nga baybayon, nya nangwagtang natong sandy coves sa una! hehe :)
ang major roads unta sa opon, kanang gapalibot jud sa isla maoy angay palapdan og panindoton, butangan nindot nga tropical landscape, bike lanes, and well-paved and lapad na sidewalk! hinaut matuman ni sa giingon ni Mrs Radaza nga lesser corruption! hahahaha!

Carrie Underwood Is Now Mrs. Fisher (http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/ourcountry/46404/carrie-underwood-is-now-mrs-fisher/)
Posted Sun Jul 11, 2010 7:33am PDT by Wendy Geller in Our Country
It's official! Carrie Underwood is now a Mrs. After weeks of speculation about when exactly her wedding would take place, the singer tied the knot with hockey star Mike Fisher Saturday night at a luxury resort outside of Atlanta, Georgia.
"Yes, Mike and Carrie are married," Underwood's publicist confirmed to the Associated Press early this morning.
Many of the wedding details leaked on the web prior to the event panned out to be accurate. The date, July 10, was the most speculated-upon item. The location, the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, was another hotly discussed factor.
The pair married before 250 friends and family, including country-music luminaries Faith Hill and Garth Brooks--as well as American Idol judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul. The ceremony featured classical music and Bible verses. Underwood wore a chantilly lace gown created by Monique Lhuillier, who is noted for her lacy bridal designs.
In a statement to PEOPLE signed "Mike & Carrie Fisher," the newlyweds said: "We could not feel more blessed to have found each other and to have shared this day with our friends and family that mean so much to us!"
The Fishers are reportedly setting off for their honeymoon this morning--the locale of which is yet another detail of the event kept secret to the world at large. As with everything else surrounding the Fisher nuptials, however, gossips have attempted to figure it out, and have settled on Tahiti. The bride herself said last month, "I have no clue where we're going...I know it will be warm, that's it."
Underwood met Fisher in 2008. He proposed to her in December 2009.
Congratulations to the newest country bride and her groom!

yeah! mactan really looks nice esp. those buildings along the beaches.
I would think nga these resorts (who did a really BAD job at developing the coastal part there) should have had to share in the burden kay sila baya ang dako og profits ani.
right! agreeeeeee! :D

Cebu City council approves housing development inside cemetery
http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/news/regions/21323-cebu-city-council-approves-housing-development-inside-cemetery

CEBU CITY: The City Council of Cebu has passed a resolution ordering the closure of the Lorega-San Miguel Municipal Cemetery to make way for a socialized housing project. Arguing that its location is no longer ideal for a cemetery, the council approved the said resolution which will close the facility 10 years after the housing project was proposed.
The cemetery is less than the required 25-meter distance from the nearest dwelling and the 50-meter distance from a water source.
Sanitation concerns
The cited cemetery is commonly regarded as home to many urban poor families who have built their dwellings on top of tombs.
The cited practice, however, raised concerns on health and sanitation.
“The area has to be closed. Aside from the fact that the people there are living in sub-human conditions with babies lying on tombs, the cemetery has also become a haven for drug users,” Councilor Edgardo Labella lamented.
The resolution, authored by Labella, ordered that a public notice be made on the closure for burial of the cemetery to allow the conversion of a 9,000-square-meter area of the 20,000-square-meter cemetery into a socialized housing site.
Beneficiaries
Around 300 households that occupy the cemetery will benefit from the housing project, according to Romeo Orocay of the Division for the Welfare of the Urban Poor (DWUP).
Orocay, who is in charge of the housing project, said the city will construct a bone chamber within the cemetery’s premises, so relatives of the dead can transfer their remains there. A chapel will also be constructed nearby.
Meanwhile, Former Rep. Raul del Mar of Cebu’s north district allocated P10 million from his Priority Development Assistance Fund for the housing project that will be undertaken by Gawad Kalinga.
Present structures
DWUP reported that there are 291 illegal structures inside the cemetery. Of the number, 91 have tombs underneath the house. Sixty tombs still have cadavers, while the other 31 are empty.
Now that the council has declared the cemetery closed, Orocay said their office will coordinate with the families of the dead, the homeowners’ association, barangay officials and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7 for the plans for the housing project.
In 2000, members of the United Cemetery Side Residence Association Inc. have already asked DWUP to declare a portion of the cemetery as a socialized housing site. Initially, a four-story building for the informal settlers was proposed.
The project will be undertaken by the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation Inc., DSWD 7 and the Action for Nurturing Children and Environment, a non-governmental organization that also committed P2.4 million for the project.
DWUP has sought the opinion of the City Health Department, the City Planning Office and the office of Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.
Lawyer Joel Ouano, legal counsel of the archdiocese, said the cardinal has no objections to the request.

Its not possible bai.. if we want our Tourist areas to maximize its potential.. we need to improve our facilities including the roads at par with the world standards, and that is whether we like it or not... However, its not necessarily an expressway ang dapat diha sa Mactan.. a global standard, 4 lane road would do na..
Since we are catering to the high end market.. we need to expand the roads and improve other underlining facilities such as airports, hotels, service etc.

when the population is fast growing and the developments in Lapu-Lapu is fast rising.. there will be a need to expand the roads..
if you will be driving even in the Mactan Circumferential Road from Marigondon to Maribago, you will realize that there is a need to expand the road since people are fast encroaching on the road shoulders and it is now very dangerous to drive on these roads.
IMO, the Patalinghug Ave should be extended up to MARIGONDON all the way to Maribago, Mactan and Punta Engano. ^^
And besides, Lapu-Lapu is already a HUC and not just a beach town.:)

Not that dili nato imaximize. Ang ang man sag akong pasabot libaongon... what i mean is hamis pero dili parihaog hi way nga parehag itsura sa streets sa ciudad.

The resolution, authored by Labella, ordered that a public notice be made on the closure for burial of the cemetery to allow the conversion of a 9,000-square-meter area of the 20,000-square-meter cemetery into a socialized housing site.

Lawyer Joel Ouano, legal counsel of the archdiocese, said the cardinal has no objections to the request.

Exactly, why there is a need to expand the Circumferential Roads of Lapu-Lapu because this is not just an ordinary city but a Highly Urbanized City... Then access roads going to the beaches shall be also developed at least a 2 lane roads.... compared karon na libaong kaayo ang mga roads in going to the beaches.. except in some resorts.
Nindot sad jud na our roadways shall have trees or ornamental plants.
...Not that dili nato imaximize. Ang ang man sag akong pasabot libaongon... what i mean is hamis pero dili parihaog hi way nga parehag itsura sa streets sa ciudad.
Depende sad na sa situation.. but Lapu-Lapu is different, because it is both a resort, industrial and commercial city bai...
So development should not be biased on preserving laid back feel, kay industrial and commercial man sad ni sya... :)

Northeastern part of Lapu Lapu is not Industrial... Build hi ways in and around Lapu Lpu City, Mepz 1 and 2... much better 10 lanes gyud.
But in Northeastern part of Mactan which is not Industrial but Resorts and beaches, pwede kaayo i preserve. It's not right sad nga porque Mactan is growing we should expand also the roads in each corner of the island. There's should be control over developments. We should put everything in order, build infras intended for Industrial use and build infras intended for Tourism. honestly i dont see your logic... build a 10 lane road.. in the Western side.. unya maintain the 2 lane road on the Eastern.... karon pa lang gani mag hout na.. kay naa na dghan jeep nag ply sa Soong to Merkado, Mepza, Highway and vice versa.. tapos Punta Engano to same place and vice versa.. and Maribago and Datag to the same places and vice versa...

the Eastern side bai of Lapu-Lapu is equally progressive, with more and more developments sprouting.. so your idea of maintaining the 2 lane road in that corridor while building a 10 lane road in the other side is basically not feasible.. because whether we like it or not, those part of the city, will still be inhabited by people who will expect to find work in the industrial and commercial area..... and i tell you, this is not a just a theory but a fact.. :)
I have been there a few days ago, and i was surprised that the Eastern part of Lapu-Lapu City is not the same anymore the last time i was there. The quiet and seeming out of touch ambiance of the place a few years ago, is not anymore the same now.

It is clear nga western is industrial, diha mag tuyok tuyok ang business while eastern is for tourism... Tourism (specially we're talking of beaches here) includes environment. kenken94 July 12th, 2010, 05:43 PM Cebu gives small investors chance in SRP property
Regions
Written by Wilfredo Rodolfo III / Reporter
Monday, 12 July 2010 19:29
THE Cebu City government is keen on selling small parcels of lots at the reclaimed South Road Properties (SRP) to give smaller investors a chance to be part of the development of the property and to spur the growth of commercial establishments in the area.
Cebu Investments and Promotions Center (CIPC) executive director Joel Mari Yu said he received verbal approval from Mayor Michael Rama to do so.
The city is set to publish the rules on the bidding of the property within the month.
Yu said they are looking at bidding out 10 lots sized at around 3,000 square meters each.
The floor price for the bidding will be at P30,000 per square meter. The property will be reserved for commercial development.
“This will be a very good investment because they will be very close to the development of SM,” Yu said. “This will give the smaller player a chance to be part of SRP.”
The CIPC is a non-profit organization funded by the local government units in Cebu to market the island to investors. The organization is the lead marketing arm for the SRP.
The sale of small property parcels is a break from the traditional wholesale joint venture strategy of the city since the 240-hectare SRP was completed in 2001. So far, only Filinvest Land Inc. (52 hectares) and SM Prime Holdings (32 hectares) have committed to build large-scale development in the property.
Filinvest is in joint venture development with the city.
The company is planning to pour P20 billion worth of development in the area in the next 10 years.
SM is directly purchasing its 32 hectares at SRP for more than P3 billion payable until 2015.
Completed in 2001, the SRP was built with a ¥12-billion loan obtained by the city with the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC).
The loan is payable until 2020. The property is straddled by the Cebu South Coastal Road which has direct access to Talisay City in the South and a subway connection to the port area and eventually to Mactan Island and the international airport.

Actually first used by Ceres in Iloilo, then Bacolod. It was later deployed to Rural and Bachelor sa Mindanao. Deployment of new units depends sa mga branch managers since they sort of "pay" for the units they acquire from VTI's TEBBAP. Btw, this is VTI's Viking and not original KingLong, own assembled lang by VTI.
romantic_guy08 July 12th, 2010, 06:20 PM mao ba ni ang King Long buses nga gigami pud didto sa Mindanao?
This unit is called Viking since own assembled by VTI's TEBBAP in Bacolod City. Recently used lang for BCD/DGT - CEB na route, pero over a year or two na sa Iloilo, Bacolod and Mindanao (Bachelor and Rural).

Actually first used jud siya sa Ceres pero sa Iloilo branch siya gideploy before sa Mindanao. All 3 bus companies are under the Yanson Group of Bus Companies based in Bacolod city. Naa pud sila bus company na based sa Manila (Manila - Batangas), Ceres Transport. Ceres and pinaka magulang sa mga companies.

my opinion ... - i don't know, ... he he he
bitaw ... logic is good but we need cash ... aw, ku-an diay, logic is good but we
need actual mobility data and analysis.
1st issue, don't equate increase in vehicle count with need for more or wider
roads. if we do this, we'll run out of space later because the no. of vehicles
will always tend to increase.
2nd issue, don't equate traffic with mobility. traffic is the movement of vehicles
while mobility is the movement of people. it is the later which is more impor-
tant. we care about people, not cars.
third issue, different land uses has different transport requirements so let's
analyse it carefully.
personally, i don't mind expanding to 4 lanes for any road, but i frown going
further IF the road is NOT a CORRIDOR road. roads should allow traffic to
flow but it should not prevent local residents to cross UNLESS absolutely
necessary. roads like EDSA is like a huge fence or a berlin wall which excludes
one side from the other. transport should be inclusive.
whatever it is, i'm not sure about mactan's situation right now. the last time
we did study it was circa 1996 yet so i'm sure what i know is outdated
already. but i'm happy that you're debating about the matter - it brings out
brilliant ideas in a marketplace of opinions ...
good day.

Runner dies after going amok
by Allan I. Varquez
A PARTICIPANT in a running competition in Mandaue City Saturday evening died after he jumped off from the Mandaue City District Hospital’s window.
A hospital nurse said the loss of blood from a cut in the left arm, and not the impact of the fall, killed Alexander Landera, a
member of the Danao City Runners Club.
A police investigation report said Landera collapsed along the race route during the Energizer Night Run that started at the Mandaue Reclamation Area.
He was taken by Acert paramedics to the Mandaue City District Hospital but was allegedly left outside the hospital’s entrance.
Insp. Zosimo Jabas of the Mandaue City Police Office said when the hospital staff were about to carry Landera to the emergency room, he suddenly stood up and ran inside the hospital.
He ran past the emergency room and rammed the glass door of the delivery room.
He then proceeded to the adjacent recovery room where he took the table of the suction machine, climbed on it and jumped out of the window.
The incident happened at 11:26 p.m. or almost an hour after Landera was brought by paramedics to the hospital.
The hospital personnel called up the police to seek assistance.
“Kusog kaayo siyang nidagan. Wala mi makaapas niya. Unya wala siya’y klaro nga direksyon kay gidasmagan niya ang among pultahan nga bildo (He ran so fast to different directions. We couldn’t catch up with him),” said a nurse, who
requested anonymity.
Wounded
The nurse said they suspect Landera got wounded in the left arm when he rammed the glass door of the delivery room.
The Energizer Night Run drew 2,500 participants, competing in the 3K, 5K and 10K categories for a prize of P10,000.
Manila-based actors and actresses joined the activity since a portion of the P350-registration fee went to the Kapuso Foundation of GMA 7. The TV network raised funds for hearing-impaired indigents.
The nurse said after Landera jumped out of the window, they ran to the hospital’s garden where he fell.
“He was unconscious when we carried him to the emergency room.
Henz July 13th, 2010, 07:31 AM slerz.. we are speaking here of the main thoroughfares particularly the Circumferential Road kay mao na ang main artery sa Lapu-lapu city...
( and btw, the circumferential road here refers to the road from the airport to the Patalinghug AVe, to the bridge area, then traversing the MEPZ 2 Basak, to Marigondon, then turning left going to Maribago, passing several beaches, Imperial Palace, EGI, and then to the Maribago, Mactan area, turning to Mactan proper, to IBO, MEPZ 1 and back.)
ang padung sa Engano.. depende ra sad.. pero with the fast growing residential and tourism related facilities on that area, i also surmise that they need a 4 lane road didto.
when i say experience, means, from what i have personally witnessed. Driving on that part of the city is so scary na.. since dili na sya ang dating laid back na community five years ago.. and perhaps, today will never be the same also five years from now..
my bone of contention is. make a 4 to 6 lane circumferential roads and the secondary roads , 2 lanes...... then put ornamental or trees on the sides of the road... to maintain the natural, island feel or ambiance..
Zuburbia July 13th, 2010, 09:14 AM i agree, thats what i mean, i widen nang circumferencial road kay that serves the industrial side of mactan. Basta kana nga road leading to punta engno 2 lanes ra gyud na.

sir rob July 13th, 2010, 11:14 AM That is so true. As a frequent movie-goer, I hate those distracting lights on the sides. Heck, even the fire exit signs in some theaters annoy me so I'm glad SM has considered the interest of the movie-goers.
I always noticed that mostly we tend to neglect or oversee the importance of safety specially in this enclosed/confined areas. I was directly (before) coordinating the fire escape plan, route and drill of SM when I was still there and I have noticed and pointed out the hazards. Most of the companies except in MEPZ (at that time, 1999-2003) neglects this very important safety aspect. And most don't realize the importance of it until it happened already.

Mao ni nakanindot sa inato lang nga kinaiya sa mga Sugboanon, kay ang mga opisyal dili gud magpataas sa ihi ba...As much as possible, they will try to reach out the populace..In this way, ma-encourage man gud ang mga citizens to be aware and contribute sa society.
Salamat Jack Jakosalem...Salamat na pud kay Sir Zidlakan...
SleMarKen July 13th, 2010, 06:37 PM slerz.. we are speaking here of the main thoroughfares particularly the Circumferential Road kay mao na ang main artery sa Lapu-lapu city...
Driving on that part of the city is so scary na.. since dili na sya ang dating laid back na community five years ago.. and perhaps, today will never be the same also five years from now..
my bone of contention is. make a 4 to 6 lane circumferential roads and the secondary roads , 2 lanes...... then put ornamental or trees on the sides of the road... to maintain the natural, island feel or ambiance..
aw wa diay ta nagka sinabot... pagka!:D Ang dan baya padong Hilton og Shang among gi hisgutan ni Randyboi.
pero same, ganahan gihapon kang himoong 4 lane. Well based from your experience nga scary naman kaha nya dili na siya dating laid back, atong sulbaron... :)
Pero
EdithB July 13th, 2010, 11:28 PM Thanks for all the CIT photos. Reminds me of the times when I can go up to the 4th floor in my high heels without stopping to catch a breath! LOL. There's gonna be a reunion in January next year, hoping to see some old friends and not so good friends. He, he.
My opinion, roads should be dictated by the present and future needs of the population. I assume that there are different land uses and zoning districts there. You cannot force a certain ambience and look if they are not reflective and does not serve the needs of the area.
Development should be limited if they cannot be served by the infrastructure or they could pay for the improvements themselves. Does anybody know how they maintain the required psi for the fire sprinklers in those mid and high rises in Cebu? How about the parking space requirements?

Cebu City Ordinance no. 1894 was approved on April 4, 2001 to give the utility firms five (5) years to implement partial underground cabling and to fully implement it in 10 years or by 2011...but sadly, only less than a year na lang for the full implementation pero we have not seen any major changes except those bundled wires which was done during the Asean Summit...

For the parking space, I think it was adressed rightly, at least that's what I know 7 years ago when I was still there.

Sleepwalker July 14th, 2010, 06:47 PM SM Prime pays city P109 million
By Jessica Ann R. Pareja/NLQ (The Freeman) Updated July 15, 2010 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - SM Prime Holdings Inc. yesterday turned over to Cebu City a check for P109 million representing its third payment for the purchase of 30.41 hectares at the South Road Properties.
SM has paid the city roughly P896 million so far and will be paying the rest of the P2.7 billion deal in six years.
Last January, SM paid the city P406 million after signing the conditional sale.
The company also paid a P270.9 million bid bond last year which became part of the down payment. These two payments represent 25 percent of the total amount they owe the city government.
The 75 percent balance or P2,032,283,000 is payable in six years. SM will be paying the city in a quarterly installment basis.
The first quarterly payment was done last April where SM paid the city a total of P110,082,050. Yesterday’s payment was exactly worth P109,023,568.75.
Another payment will be made in October and December to complete the P433 million they have to pay for this year.
SM plans to invest P21 billion for a mixed use development project at the SRP.
The project will not only include a mall that is 10 times bigger than the existing one at the North Reclamation Area, but will also include a two-hectare convention center, which will be the biggest in the Visayas, two hotels and a residential building or condominium.
They also want to build a university and a hospital as part of the long-term plan.
SM targets the mall, convention center, hotels and condominiums to be completed within eight years depending on the company’s financial capacity and the demand for these developments.
In the next years, developments at the SRP that people may look forward to include the plan of Filinvest Land Inc. to put up an urban commercial district consisting of a hotel, office spaces, high-rise condominiums, medium-rise residential area and a white sand beach.
These are part of the 40-heactare joint venture agreement of Filinvest with the city government for a P25 billion development project which will be completed in 25 years. – THE FREEMAN

This isn't in defense of DPWH ('cause I hate them too) but kanang part sa transcentral passing through Cebu Central National Park dili pwede butangan ug sidewalks kai it is within a protected landscape (inalienable & non-disposable), hence virtually no pedestrian traffic. IMO, even outside the protected area, wala unta'y road features that encourage human settlement. Basically the settlers are not following the comprehensive land use plan, and if they are not controlled they will aggravate the urban mess of our city. What DPWH should do is to improve the quality of their infra and add more safety features in road design for the safety of the motorists passing through the highway.

SSC Naga and SSC Cebu
Netizens pull thread 33 for Naga City
By Shie M. Barrameda
NAGA CITY --- Passion and interest on the ever-growing number of edifices and economic development in the Metro Naga banded 15 Nagueños from almost every walk of life into a team of freelance correspondents of an electronic thread.
Paolo Suzara, aka Oragon.com and President of the Nagueños that peopled Skyscrapercity Thread 33 admitted that they do not gain anything financially from their efforts of advertising the festivals and latest updates in Naga City through the internet.
“For us, the main objective of our group is to inform and advertise the City. It’s all voluntary,” he said.
The group, yet to be named, was pioneered by a certain Kevin B, whose identity cannot be revealed due to privacy reasons, in November 2006 in an effort of showcasing the latest feats by the local government and the private sector among other updates to the Bicolanos of the world.
He was followed by three more registrants on the Skyscapercity who in turn attracted the people that comprise the present team, transforming Thread 33 into the most active page on the said forum nationally.
Suzara, who is also the marketing coordinator of the University of Nueva Caceres, said that they are a diverse group composed of priests, doctors, teachers, other professionals and even students, regularly posting on Thread 33 information and advertisements of events the local print and broadcast media sometimes fail to notice or pick up immediately.
Their roster of members include Dr. Ramon Caceres aka Naga Boy in Skyscrapercity, one of the leading endocrinologists of the Philippines and current President of the Philippine Thomasian Endocrine Progress, Inc. with three clinics and offices around the Bicol Region.
They also have within their fold Fr. Xavier Olin, Ronald Savilla, principal of Olas Elementary School in Lagonoy North District and JP Aguilar, an elementary instructor of Concepcion Grande Elementary School.
Now, after a thread, a Facebook account and a blog, the Nagueños have started periodically taking tourists and visiting doctors on historical tours on the key places of Naga City for free.
“We have just become active in community service last year, 2009,” Savilla said referring to the medical mission for diabetics conducted at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Barangay Tabuco which the group spearheaded with the Diabetes Camarines Sur, benefitting more than a hundred less-fortunate citizens of Naga last December.
This year, on September 24-26, Skyscrapercity Philippines will host its first National Congress and Meeting in Naga City with the most active group on its pages.
To register for Skyscrapercity Thread 33, just type www.skyscrapercity.com on your search tab then browse through Philippine forums, cities and places, Luzon, then Naga and Iriga Cities and Camarines Sur Province Thread 33. On Facebook, just like them at the Ciudad de Naga account for continues updates. For blog readers and bloggers, type www.nagacitydeck.blogspot.com.

Barongoy July 16th, 2010, 04:10 AM Cebu City Ordinance no.
I understand. This problem is not only in Cebu. I have seen it in other cities too. If you are rich enough to live in a new development, 99% of the time your utility cables are underground so you don't have to worry. It is just frustrating that we have these laws/ordinances in place but nobody is really taking responsibility to do something about it. Just drive around and look up those poles and you'll see what I mean. It is very ugly and it could very well be unsafe. I think we all have just gotten used to seeing them like that we look the other way. 10-20 years from now, mopusta ko ingon ra gihapon na ana. Heck, the pole just outside our old house sa mai Capitol have been like that for years and have gotten worse as more people now live in our area.

IBM brings "Smarter Planet" initiatives to Cebu
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated July 16, 2010 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - Recognizing Cebu’s pro-active stance in becoming a “Smarter City”, technology solutions giant IBM will start talking with local government unit (LGU) executives in its bid to push Cebu as one of the best cities in the world.
Although IBM has been holding dialogues with different cities in the Philippines to embrace its “Smarter Planet” initiatives, the company is confident that Cebu will lead in the implementation of this proposal.
IBM Philippines chief technologist Lope Doromal said that the company will soon present the IBM’s proposal that targets the improvement of seven different areas to the LGU officials as well as to the provincial officials.
These seven areas that need to be improved in order for Cebu to become a “Smarter City” include; the strong implementation of smarter—telecommunication infrastructure, education, public safety, government services, transportation, energy and utilities, and smarter healthcare.
Promoting the Smarter City concept is under IBM’s global campaign of introducing a “Smarter Planet” adoption. Government officials, both in the local and national levels, are deemed as the major players for the realization of this initiative.
Cebu, for instance, which is aiming to become a globally renowned preferred or emerged BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) destination, must immediately employ this concept, Doromal said.
In 1900, only 13 percent of the word’s population lived in cities. By the year 2050 that number will have risen to 70 percent. “We are adding the equivalent of seven New Yorks to the planet every year.”
This unprecedented urbanization is both an emblem of the world’s economic and societal progress, especially for the world’s emerging nations—and huge strain on the planet’s infrastructure.
According to Doromal, it’s a challenge felt urgently by Mayors, heads of economic development, school administrators, police chiefs, and other civic leaders.
Doromal mentioned an example of a “Smarter City”—the Masdar City, which started from scratch near Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He said planners there are working with top scientists, engineers, and innovators to create interconnected systems and manage them through an integrated city dashboard.
Masdar City’s leaders want to be able to fine-tune their metropolis in real time—and thus shape what could be the world’s first economically and environmentally sustainable city, with zero carbon emission, as they go.
According to Doromal, the lessons they learn—both technological and in terms of citywide collaborative management—can be spread around the globe.
In the Philippines, although IBM has been promoting its “Smarter Planet” campaign, Doromal said they are still facing a lot of challenges. He however expressed confidence that pro-active cities like Cebu can immediately employ this modernized technique.
“The challenge we are facing is the challenge of system. There should be a collaboration and openness to innovation, [especially among government officials” Lope said.
The solutions presented by IBM’s “Smarter Planet” platform provides the answers of some problems the Philippines is facing today, specifically in water and power shortage problem, inadequate infrastructure, poor healthcare and public safety services, deteriorating quality of education.
Doromal said the Philippines can be proud of its leadership in telecommunication innovation and application, due to the upbeat industry movers and investors in the telecom industry.

MatudNilaBaby July 16th, 2010, 10:33 AM tourism news article from sunstar daily 7/14/10 talking about the infrastructure needs of cebu in particular coming from the cebu business club
Cebu, in particular, has a lot of areas that are yet to be developed. We are pushing for countryside tourism, but the lack of infrastructure for the accessibility of areas like Camotes and Bantayan Islands is still our concern,” she said.
Jay Aldeguer of Islands Souvenirs also said opening more direct flights to the country and to Cebu, as well as extensive
promotion and improved product offerings, should be priorities of the tourism sector.
“We have to have a clear branding for the country. Are we an adventure country, an eco-tourism destination? This is important for us to be able to tap the market that we really want,” he said.
He added that though the aim of doubling tourism revenues in six years is quite “ambitious,” it is doable but only if concerns will be correctly addressed.
Lim said the Philippines, with more than 7,000 islands, has an annual tourism revenue of about US$2.5 billion.
sa ako lang pangagpas to accomplish all these kinahanglan gyud mag-adopt ta ug comprehensive mass transport system linking land, sea and air. brt is a good start pero kuwang pa kaayo na. usa sa tan-awon sa mga turista is safety and mobillity. kulang ta ana adto nalang sila sa ubang lugar bisan pa ug daghan ta ug natural sceneries.

Rama to embark on beautification project
By Jessan Guillemer (The Freeman) Updated July 17, 2010 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama is embarking on his “super beautification project” of Osmeña Boulevard, one of the main thoroughfares in city.
Rama said the sidewalks of Osmeña Boulevard, from corner Sanciangko Street to the Capitol, should also be citizen-friendly.
“Tul-iron ang hiwi, ayuhon ang guba, nindotan ang bati, han-ayon ang gubot ug wagtangon ang baho,” Rama said.
Rama cited that Sanciangko Street also needs more attention because of the sidewalk vendors.
To materialize the project, the city will first hire an architect to plan the reconstruction of the sidewalks.
Rama is seeking for donors and volunteers’ from the private sector for the project.
Vendors in the area will be relocated once the project starts. (FREEMANNEWS)

I hope SSC Cebu can be part of this cause for Cebu...:okay:

Sleepwalker July 17th, 2010, 04:30 AM ^^Mao gud bai Slerz. At least ang inclination ni Mayor Rama is more on beautification and culture preservation sa Cebu.
Gargantuan task gud ni para kang Mayor, especially, naa pa BRT ug uban butang nga atimanon.

Awas-awas akong ka-excited aning plano ni Mayor. Ang nakanindot ani, kay the other LGU's within the metro and even the whole island is looking up at Cebu City as an older brother and as a model. Proof of this, kay karon ang trend sa uban LGU within Cebu province kay reclaim og mga yuta, after SRP was successful.
ivanc July 17th, 2010, 05:51 AM good luck mayor mike! go go!!
its a really really good start, (hopefully)... but he cant do it alone... we, the citizens should also do our part in keeping the city orderly but sadly murag kuwang sa interest/drive/proactiveness ang kasagarang tawo..

ivanc July 17th, 2010, 06:10 AM ‘Beautification council’ eyed for Cebu City streets 7/17/2010
By Chris A. Ligan, Correspondent
A “super beautification council” to be headed by businesswoman Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung will be created to clean up and improve Cebu City sidewalks, streets and landmarks.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama yesterday announced his plan to set up the council and place Yeung in charge.
He said Yeung had shown interest in this objective even before she decided to run for mayor of Bogo City early this year.
Rama said he is close to Yeung and her family and that she won't receive any honoraria for heading the council.
The new body’s first priority will be to beautify sidewalks on both sides of Osmeña Boulevard from Sanciangko Street to the Provincial Capitol, he said.
Yeung’s family is engaged in real estate development and owns property in Cebu City’s mountain barangays.
She is also well known as a philanthropist and a close friend of Gov. Gwen Garcia.
Rama said he wanted to show Cebu City residents that programs can be done without requiring much funds from the city's coffers.
Dirty streets, uncollected garbages, unlighted roads and other problems of urban squalor have been identified by the mayor as his new administration’s priorities which he hopes to address by encouraging volunteerism.
“We managed to set up five police precincts and fire stations at no cost to the city. It's all from the private sector,” he said.
The mayor said other private citizens are willing to join Yeung in helping beautify the city and he hopes that more groups will join the council.
“Other people should be involved to help the city rather than criticizing that it's dirty,” Rama said.
He said the efforts of making Cebu City attractive would help tourism and the economy.
Meanwhile the Cebu City Council passed a resolution to install street lights in every bridge.
Councilor Sisnio Andales said at least 10 bridges built decades ago like those in barangay Pahina Central have no street lights.
He said more street lights would deter crime and help police spot crooks hiding underneath bridges to escape arrest.
Lights would also discourage the habit of people dumping garbage into the river, Andales added.

Then with proactive citizens, ang mga bisita kay motakingking na pud ug magpangikog na pud og binuang within Cebu.
Ikaw ba'y bisita unya mabadlongan ka og Cebuano, ulaw kaayo... :)

IMO dako kaayo tag matabang ani. Nindot sad kaayo paminawn nga usa tas rason nga nigwapa atong ciudad :okay::cheers:
kenken94 July 17th, 2010, 07:19 AM Taas kaayo ko ug expectations kang Mayor Mike ron nga mabuhat niya tanan nga gipromise niya during the campaign about the beautification of my beloved City. Of course, bisag unsaon niya, wala'y mahitabo kung dle mu-cooperate ang mga Cebuano so right now, I'm starting to do my part and so should everyone else. If we want Cebu to be clean upside-down then dapat the people themselves should assist and cooperate with the City Hall.
I'm already imagining Cebu after his term..... the streets are clean, no more spaghetti wires and more and more beautiful theme and amusement and historical parks and plazas...............
JOSEPH00704 July 17th, 2010, 07:35 AM hope and pray lang ta sa ato Mayor Rama ug Congressman Osmena og city councilor sa north and south... para mabuhat nila ang ilang trabaho.para sa kaugmaonb sa cebu.

(FREEMANNEWS)

kenken94 July 17th, 2010, 05:28 PM BPO company to expand RP operations, hire 3,600 new employees
By Abigail L. Ho
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 20:26:00 07/16/2010
BUSINESS PROCESS outsourcing firm Convergys Corp. is expanding five of its 12 sites in the Philippines, driving the need to add at least 3,600 new employees to its 21,000-strong workforce.
In a briefing Friday, Convergys Philippines country manager Marife Zamora said the expansion covered the company’s sites at the University of the Philippines-Ayala Land TechnoHub in Quezon City, Nuvali in Laguna, San Lazaro in Manila, i3 in Cebu, and the facility in Bacolod City.
The expansion involved the addition of 2,300 workstations, prompting the need to hire at least 3,600 more people. Of the total, an estimated 350 were for the Bacolod site, 600 for Cebu, and 2,800 for Metro Manila.
The addition of the new employees, Zamora said, would further cement the company’s status as the biggest private employer in the country.
Convergys Philippines business development director Jomari Mercado said the expansion was driven by increased client demand across all industries that the company was servicing.
“Clients are demanding more seats, more capacity,” he said.
Zamora added that Philippine agents were among the best, if not the best, in Convergys’ global employee pool—fueling client demand for more business to be outsourced here.
“We’re expanding mainly because of the outstanding performance of our employees here and the overall demand for the high-quality service that the Philippine operations are delivering,” she said.
While many of Convergys’ 12 existing facilities were already filled to capacity, she said there were still other sites that had room for expansion.
However, the company was already looking at several locations nationwide to house possible new sites.
“We’re constantly looking at facilities in new areas, particularly in the Next Wave Cities, as identified by the [Business Processing Association of the Philippines and the Commission on Information and Communications Technology],” she said.
“We don’t have a short list yet, although we’re eyeing either totally new areas, or areas near where we already have existing facilities. But we’ll definitely still expand,” she added.

maybe 'hiposon' in a positive way and could mean rounding them up and relocate them properly.
i just hope that the city government will not attempt to relocate them on land away from the sea. it won't work with badjaos - they need to be close to the sea, the way i see it - badjaos need a relocation site where they could be taught proper hygiene, less dependency on the sea and provide them with sustainable means of living.
this is not an easy task and would need the help of every cebuano, from the government down to the private sector. there are a few christian volunteers in place and are doing the best they can but they awfully lack the resources to succeed in this undertaking.
i once overheared the daughter of a badjao chieftain (talking to my friend) saying that they have no idea how to survive on land. they are ill-equipped much more to live in cities and they end up begging instead.
guys, the badjaos needed all the help they can. i admit - i am also guilty of 'just doing the talk', i know i have not done enough on this area.

kenken94 July 17th, 2010, 08:35 PM ^ She's been quiet and dormant since her loss from the last election. I dunno what drove her to even run for mayor when she can't manage Lahug properly and instead also focuses on Tomas' every move.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! THIS IS GREAT! I hope madayon jud!:applause::applause::carrot::carrot:
SleMarKen July 18th, 2010, 02:33 AM maybe 'hiposon' in a positive way and could mean rounding them up and relocate them properly.
i just hope that the city government will not attempt to relocate them on land away from the sea. it won't work with badjaos - they need to be close to the sea, the way i see it - badjaos need a relocation site where they could be taught proper hygiene, less dependency on the sea and provide them with sustainable means of living.
this is not an easy task and would need the help of every cebuano, from the government down to the private sector. there are a few christian volunteers in place and are doing the best they can but they awfully lack the resources to succeed in this undertaking.
i once overheared the daughter of a badjao chieftain (talking to my friend) saying that they have no idea how to survive on land. they are ill-equipped much more to live in cities and they end up begging instead.
guys, the badjaos needed all the help they can. i admit - i am also guilty of 'just doing the talk', i know i have not done enough on this area.
you're totally wrong!

ivanc July 18th, 2010, 05:56 AM Profiling done for relocation: Rama to rid city streets of dwellers
By Jessica R. Pareja (The Freeman) Updated July 18, 2010 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - They used to live in a roofed house before they were evicted from Riverside Sikatuna, Cebu City.
Having nowhere else to go, the whole Foster family dwells in the sidewalk of Colon Street, the historical oldest street in the country.
The Foster couple was forced to live in the street when they still have two children. Now they have five – the youngest was born just six months ago. They have lived through collecting garbage from which they earn at least P50 a day.
Grace Joy Foster, 10, is the eldest child of Althea and James Foster. She attends in a public elementary school in the city.
She comes to school with only a pair of school uniforms she has to wear every day. She bought her notebooks, pens and other school supplies using the money she earned from begging alms from other people.
The Foster family is just one of the hundreds of individuals and families sleeping in the streets of the city during the night.
With the new administration of Mayor Michael Rama, some of them have asked: What is he up to?
The question came when personnel from the city’s Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) started roving around the city to interview these street dwellers.
DSWS head Cathy Yso said Rama instructed them to conduct a profiling of these individuals to get data about where they originally live, what prompted them to dwell in streets and other information about the circumstances surrounding their current condition.
The profiling started last Monday. Yso said that they have so far interviewed 455 individuals and families during the five days of their nightly operation last week.
Some of them have really no place else to go like the Foster family on Colon Street, while some live in the province who came here to seek greener pasture but found none.
Some also live within the city but spends the night in the street where they put up their mini stalls of assorted goods which they sell during the morning.
But in the case of Agnes Medalle, 40, and her three-year-old and half son, she spends the night in an area along D. Jakosalem Street because she could no longer afford a ride home in barangay Luz.
“Layo naman kaayo kung mouli pa mi. Gi-polio man ko nya sa gabii man mi mamasura,” Medalle said. Her husband earns through repairing broken umbrellas. Combining her income from selling garbage and her husband’s, they would earn at least P150 a day. “Igo ra sad palit og makaon,” she said.
Medalle has three other children she does not know where now.
“Nilayas man ang duha. Ang usa kuyog nako matulog diri pero gikuha sa boang, wala na gibalik,” she said.
One of the personnel of the Squatters Prevention Encroachment Elimination Division (SPEED) of Cebu City who took part in the profiling operation said that the mayor may be able to assist some of them to be able to go back to their original home.
Rama said that he already has a framework to address the growing numbers of these dwellers but he cannot divulge what will be specifically done to them.
“We already have a framework for that but I don’t want to disclose it at this time because we have not started it. If I disclose it now and we are not able to carry it out for some reason, it will be a broken promise,” Rama said.
SPEED new head Noel Artes said that there is a plan to relocate them somewhere in the city. Another source said that they might be relocated somewhere in the North Reclamation Area if the city could not assist them in going home.
“Ang gusto man gud ni Mike Rama kay malimpyo ang Cebu City so kani sila (street dwellers) ganahan niya tabangan. Ang akong nadunggan basin iyang tabangan papaulion sa ilang probinsya o pabalhinon sa laing lugar. Kuyaw man gud sila sa mga tawo nga imbes muagi sa sidewalk, dili na lang n’ya maligsan. Kana pud mga rugby boys diha, kuyaw sa mga mangagi basin mang-snatch,” said a volunteer who refused to be identified.
“Nagkadaghan naman ni sila and I, the new mayor, can not just let it continue this way,” Rama said. — /LPM (THE FREEMAN)

it seems you didn't get it. when i say "all the help" it does not mean 'limos'. 'limos' won't help at all, please read the whole context of my post. they need help in a 'holistic approach'.
vishaya July 18th, 2010, 07:12 AM and BTW, do you honestly think they are better off than you? have you visited their 'homes' in alaska, mambaling? if you do, i hope you will become like them then, if that could mean your life will improve.
(sorry mods., it seems like OT na man ni)
diehardbisdak July 18th, 2010, 08:03 AM ^ dili na OT bai...we're talking about what's going on in Cebu.. :okay:
SleMarKen July 18th, 2010, 09:14 AM and BTW, do you honestly think they are better off than you? have you visited their 'homes' in alaska, mambaling? if you do, i hope you will become like them then, if that could mean your life will improve.
(sorry mods., it seems like OT na man ni)
No need to go to Alaska... They are our neighbors kanang ubos sa Skwelahan sa Pardo padong na ngadtos Tagunol. The NEW Alaska mambaling of Cebu!
They're not used of a city life, wa ko niingon nga prishon sila or pugson papa uli sa ilaha, akong gipasabot tudluan og ways to live in a city pareha nato pero as I've said namalik gihapon sila sa kadalanan. So it means they are choosing to beg, wana tay mahimo ana.
So meaning mas gahi nga pama agi ilang masugatan sa atong local government.
Maka ingon nakog "you deserve to be poor coz you chose to be poor"... Kadaghanan nila among silingan.

Mao na akong giingon nga tun an pa unsa nga pama agi...
