sir IMO, its not really misleading coz manila, no matter how it is being made up is still considered one big city in the international community. usahay kita rang mga pinoy ang ganahan maglisod-lisod sa mga butang nga dili unta lisod sabton. cebu (city) is still the philippines' second biggest city. :D
Naa ka puntos, Bai. Pero kung as a metro man gud, kana, naa gud proof ana. Pero as a city lang, kana pwede pa na ma-question kung para unsa ang word nga "biggest"?

^^you're right. For international community, Manila refers to Metro Manila, the National Capital Region. Cebu is indeed the 2nd biggest and most important city after Manila.

Gawad Kalinga urges business, Cebu LGUs to contribute more
By Rinnah B. Flores
AROUND 500 corporations have worked with Gawad Kalinga (GK) to provide land, homes and livelihoods to the poor, but more individuals and companies need to get involved, GK’s founder challenged business leaders in Cebu.
The movement’s goal: end poverty in the country by 2024.
“We are now in partnership with many local government units and businesses in building communities for the poor and by 2024, we hope to achieve the goal of supporting 44,000 barangays in this country,” said GK founder Tony Meloto.
Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency
He reported during the One Cebu Summit last Monday that there are 400 mayors who have pledged their support for the foundation.
Since GK began building houses in 1995, the organization has now built 2,000 communities all over the country, with 57,000 houses directly supported by the foundation and 150,000 more in partnership with the government and business sectors.
It has provided 10,000 hectares of land all over the Philippines, “for the building of communities.”
Gawad Kalinga is an organization that hopes to mobilize all sectors of society to provide community organizations, low-cost housing, and educational and medical assistance to the poorest of the poor among slum dwellers.
Building houses creates environmental and social opportunities for the poor while inculcating the values of honesty and integrity, Meloto said.
“Our goal is to look at the bottom of the pyramid. We want to turn the poor, uneducated and undeveloped Filipinos from liabilities into assets,” he added.
In Cebu, GK hopes to bring together 5,000 volunteers from all over the world to help build a more than a hundred houses in Bantayan Island next year.
“Volunteers from the United States, Europe and other countries will come here to support our goal of ending poverty in the country. They will be helping around 160 families to have homes,” said Meloto.
GK has built 11 villages with more than 500 houses in Cebu Province, with an ongoing GK village with 150 houses in Minglanilla—but believes the Cebuano community can do more.
In September, a two-story condominium with 86 units in Barangay Lorega, Cebu City will be set up by the organization.
^^Maayo unta tag two storeys nga housing ibutang, unya paliton nalang ang property sa ciudad. This will be the time to start fresh. Malapad na ang mga dalan. hapsay ang lugar ug ang renta barato. Butanga common dirty kitchen pareho sa na basahan nako about sa India slums nga ilang nadevelop. Wishful thinking. :ohno:

IAs far as I know, it is the policy of City Hall to allow squatter's to rebuild when hit by fires.
The reason is that land owners may take use this method in trying to evict them from their lands and we will be seeing more fires in cebu.

I think mas nindot Kung dagko nga companies...because they have the budget to make sure environment gets preserved and they have the resources to maintain it and really plan out the structures ....kaysa ginagmay nag iyaiya ug kawot unya napabayaan ang environment and aesthetic quality....just like what happened in boracay, purr mga gamay nga establishments nga isi Lang ug bulid ...tan awe nagkaguliyang....ang advantage sa carribean Kay a lot of big companies so nindot ang mga structures plus well taken cared of ang up kept sa beach and environment

Cebu lines up projects for SRP
http://www.bworldonline.com/webpics/articles/image/201008053dca8.jpg
A bus rapid transit system (BRTS) that will link to a commuter route within the 300-hectare South Road Properties (SRP) tops the Cebu city government’s list of priority projects in the next five years.
The bi-articulated buses will make designated stops within the area at predictable time intervals and will operate on dedicated lanes. The first BRTS units are expected to be rolled out in 2013, said Cebu City Planning and Development officer Nigel Paul C. Villarete, in time for the completion of the planned 26-hectare SM shopping mall and the first phase of Filinvest Land's development at the SRP, touted as the Cebu City government's most prized asset.
The BRTS will initially ply the pilot demonstration corridor from Bulacao to Talamban, including the entry and exit points to the SRP. In time, it is expected to cover the entire city of Cebu and extend to Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City, particularly the Mactan Cebu International Airport, in line with the state’s plans to link all transport systems in the country.
The pre-feasibility study conducted on the Talamban to Bulacao belt, completed in June this year, found the route to be financially and economically feasible “with a decent rate of return even at existing jeepney fare rates,” Mr. Villarete said.
The Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) is expected to bid out the contract for the full feasibility study between September and December this year. The survey will be financed by a $355-million technical assistance fund from the Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility.
The project will also get concessional loans from the $250-million Clean Technology Fund of the World Bank. A fifth, equivalent to $50 million, will go to the BRTS projects in Manila and Cebu, Mr. Villarete said.
“Hopefully, Cebu’s would be implemented first,” he added.
The city government has lined up other projects to support the development of the SRP, which is envisioned to be the single biggest growth driver for Cebu. Reclaimed with assistance from the Japanese state, the SRP is an economic zone with commercial, information technology, service, residential, recreational and tourism components.
To complement the BRTS, the Cebu city government is negotiating with the Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA) to finance a pre-feasibility study, targeted for completion in the first quarter of 2011, on an internal commuter system within the 300-hectare greenfield development.
“We want to have a very efficient transport system to induce people to not use their cars in going around the SRP,” Mr. Villarete said. This will make the hub commuter- and environment-friendly, he added.
The CDIA has also been presented with a similar proposal for the SRP’s district cooling system. “This is already being used in advanced countries. We're studying whether this can de done for the entire SRP or just part of it,” Mr. Villarete said. The scheme distributes thermal energy from a central refrigeration plant to multiple buildings through a network of underground pipes for use in space and process cooling.
An urban redevelopment project aimed at upgrading the living conditions of coastal communities near the SRP is also in the pipeline. SRP is separated by a narrow body of water from the seaside community of Badjaos and slum areas of Mambaling, which present a stark contrast to the high-end developments envisioned at the economic zone.
The development has, thus far, attracted real estate giants Filinvest Land, Inc. and SM Prime Holdings, Inc. Both companies are conducting pre-project preparations, Mr. Villarete said.
Filinvest will work on a total of 50 hectares, 40 of which will be in joint venture with the Cebu city government. The firm has announced an investment of around P25 billion in hotels and retirement complexes, among others.
SM Prime, on the other hand, has acquired a 30-hectare property at the SRP for P2.7 billion. It will spend roughly P20 billion to build a shopping mall, a convention/exhibition center, two hotels, condominium buildings and in time, a school and a hospital. Its layout will be patterned after the Mall of Asia complex in Pasay, with the shopping center envisioned to have a gross floor area of 26 hectares, twice the size of the first SM mall in Cebu.
Another SRP locator, Bigfoot Entertainment, is leasing a two-hectare property for a movie production facility with modern sound stages and a movie studio.

But kng sa pinoy pana particulary Cebuanos pangkasab-an jud na mga singers ky supposedly they must sing it with proper conviction and emotion.. Though we can clearly understand ky I think wla pud kau sila ksabot sa ilang gpang kanta.
:lol::lol:
musically they sound better kay sa mga pinoy singing group's rendition of rosas pandan. we might have the right cebuano accent but claro kaayo nga naay yabag ug dili maayo pagkablend sa mga filipino chorus.
Daizuke August 13th, 2010, 05:05 AM ^^ then you have not seen/heard the good ones.. I understand about what youve said "they musically sound better".. its a choir they should ALWAYS sound good. But when it comes to melodic harmony they fall flat, some voices did not blend well with the melody either too high or too low..
I think I should let you know that Pinoys have been very competitive when it comes to choir singing and have won major international awards across the globe particularly in Europe. Bohol's Loboc Children's Choir is a good example.

i've practically heard most of the rosas pandan version posted in youtube pero mas daghan ko madunggan nga yabag ug dili maayo pagkablend ang sa mga filipino choirs may be because we are so familiar with the tune that we ignore the mechanics of the music. bag-o nga musical arrangement by george hernandez ang gigamit sa mga foreign singers and they stick with what is written. kini usa lang ka personal observation which might be helpful to improve the music education in cebu.
(fyi: if youre a choir singer here, its either youre a music major or have taken vocal music where they dont depend on the conductor to feed them the right sound. if everybody sight reads the notes dali ra kaayo masakpan kon kinsay out of tune.)

CEBU City was awarded as the most honest and transparent city among metro growth centers outside Metro Manila.
It also fared well in a survey on the quality of life, cost of doing business, dynamism of the local economy, human resources and training, infrastructure, and responsiveness of local government units (LGUs) to business needs.
Cebu City, along with Dagupan and Cagayan de Oro, was named the most competitive city outside Metro Manila in the Philippine Cities Competiveness Ranking Project 2009 (PCCRP) of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center.
Cebu City was also recognized as the Best in Disaster Preparedness, Best in the Dynamism of its Local Economy and Best in Infrastructure.
According to the AIM Policy Center website, Cebu City figured in all the award categories, which included Best Compliance with Government-Mandated Plans, Entrepreneurs’ Award for Most Supportive to MSMEs, Entrepreneurs’ Award for Most Honest and Transparent Cities, Dynamism of Local Economy, Infrastructure, and Quality of Life.
“I’m very proud of this and I’m proud our city government. At least, I have something to show to our critics and I can just laugh at them,” said former Cebu City mayor Tomas Osmeña, who received the award last week.
The PCCRP study was based on government data, a perception survey among business owners, and interviews with local chief executives and local business group’s representative.
It also classified the cities into three groups: metropolitan growth centers, growth centers and emergent cities.
According to the summary of findings and a report published by Newsbreak Online, Cebu City bested Davao in the metro growth center category, which refers to cities with an average of P3.05 billion total income and average population of 1.08 million.
The city received the Entrepreneurs’ Award for “Most Honest and Transparent in its Dealings” among metro growth cities.
It was credited for disclosing financial accountability, as well as using participation in its planning and budgeting processes.
Cebu City was also named the top performer in disaster preparedness.
It was commended for its City Disaster Coordinating Council, disaster preparedness plan and documents on tracking of informal settlers. It also met the minimum ratio for the number of firemen for every 100,000 residents.
The city also bested other cities for its dynamic economy, measured in terms of per capita income, number of commercial and universal banks, building construction area, membership in local chambers of commerce and industry, access to finance, level of foreign interest, number of Department of Tourism accredited establishments and historical sites.
It bested Davao City in infrastructure for the reduced travel time to its seaport, reduced travel time for road maintenance, commercial water connections, subscribed telephone lines and reliability of water service.
Cagayan de Oro, meanwhile, topped in the growth centers category, which included the cities of General Santos, Baguio, Lapu-Lapu, Zamboanga, Olongapo, Batangas, Iloilo, Bacolod and Mandaue. These cities have an average income of P1.2 billion and population 421,165.
Dagupan City is the most competitive among the emergent cities.
It bested the cities of Angeles, Butuan, Cotabato, Lucena, Naga, Legaspi, Pagadian, Puerto Princesa, Ormoc, Iligan, Tagum, and San Fernando in La Union, Surigao, Tuguegarao, Tacloban and Santiago.
AIM conducted the study with support from the United States Agency for International Development and the German foundation gtz. (GAC)

Hmmm...bitaw noh? Ngano kaha? Ngano kaha nga the day after this was proposed, nag-issue dayun ug statement ang Sepulveda? Mutu-o ba mo nga politicians need to put their names on their projects so that "people will know what they are doing"? Wow. Genius. If a politicians projects are that good, people will always appreciate it, and they will always remember the politician come election time. He or she doesn't even need to put his/her face or name to every tarpaulin, every signboard, every project.
Haaaay... please... ayaw na lang intawn mi ug bu-anga. Just say nga you are scared about this proposed bill because if it pushes through, you can't friggin' ADVERTISE anymore....:ohno:

Though in fairness to Gwen, bai, naa man pud siya'y nabuhat, somehow. Especially in heritage conservation, and maybe a bit of tourism. But I don't like her brand of politics at all, especially in the way she milks each and every project for media mileage. Have you watched Sugbo channel? Linguine August 14th, 2010, 08:32 AM Ayala Center opens services wing, 3D cinema
CEBU CITY -- Property developer Cebu Holdings, Inc. has converted an idle movie theater into a services wing and launched a three-dimensional cinema at the Ayala Center Cebu. Cebu Holdings Pres. Francis O. Monera said there was a greater need for a one-stop shop for services than another movie theater. Aside from the 3D theater, Ayala Center Cebu has three regular theaters. "We are just responding to what our customers need," he said. Asked if this was an indication that movie theater sales were declining, Mr. Monera said many people prefer to watch movies at home. But the new 3D cinema, which is the first fully-automated facility among those in the Ayala malls, is expected to bring back the viewers to the theaters. The services wing, meanwhile, provides banking, bills payment, travel booking and other services. Among the shops located in the new Services Area are Western Union, Skycable, Go Large Graphics, LBC, Mr. Coffee, ML Kwarta Padala, Core Pacific Money Exchange, Olvis Visa, Grand Hope and Speedtalk. The improvements are part of Cebu Holdings’ thrust to further expand the mall, which is considered the centerpiece of the 50-hectare Cebu Business Park.

Linguine August 15th, 2010, 02:57 AM Reclamation project signed for Talisay city
August 14, 2010 06:16:00
Cebu Daily News
AFTER three years of meetings, a reclamation agreement was signed by the Talisay City government and a private firm to develop 100 hectares of foreshore and submerged land in Talisay.
Under the contract with Jute Development Inc., the reclamation project will initially cover 50 hectares identified by the City Assessor's Office as free areas ready for development.
The initial area to be reclaimed is in barangay Tanke beside the new Macapagal-Gullas fish port.
The contractor will develop the land at no expense to the city.
About 15 percent of the income generated will go to the maintenance of the city’s roads and plazas.
The Talisay City government will receive a 20 percent share while the developer will get about 80 percent.
The project is expected to be completed in 15 years.
City Legal Officer Owen Algoso said the project will help spur commercial and industrial growth in the city.

wildfrangipani August 15th, 2010, 08:01 AM Survey finds Cebu City ‘most honest’ (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/survey-finds-cebu-city-most-honest)
Saturday, August 14, 2010
Sun.Star Cebu
(GAC)

kenken94 August 16th, 2010, 02:26 AM ^ ang Sugbo, gamay ruh nga isla pero puno kaayo sa tao. Daghan nasad ga mga Syudad ang nagsugod ug reclaim ug yuta to have more room for the very bullish economic activity happening in the island. I think I am now looking at a miniature version of Japan since like them our island will be filled with reclaimed lands because the terrain won't agree with the high urbanization and industrialization experienced by the Province.
Some places are blessed with vast areas of plain land yet they don't experience growth of the same rate as we are experiencing in these past years. They've got plenty of room to grow while we are now going to our limits as the little island with a huge economy wants more room to grow.

bisayaKID August 16th, 2010, 04:05 AM Luxury brands consider entry to Cebu
By Rinnah B. Flores(sunstar cebu)
LUXURY brands have expressed interest to enter the Cebuano market, an official of a company managing malls said.
Francis Monera, president of Ayala-led Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI), said during the opening of the Ayala Services Center last Thursday that “foreign and local luxury brands are continuously assessing the Cebuano market and Ayala Center Cebu is one of those malls that they are looking into.”
Only Greenbelt 5, which is owned by the Ayala Group of Companies, showcases luxury brands like Gucci, Rolex and Louis Vuitton.
“Phase 2B will provide more choices for our shoppers and we are expecting its groundbreaking to be in the first half of 2011,” added Monera.
The luxury shops will be part of the expansion of Ayala Center through its upcoming Phase 2B, currently where the terminal is located.
This expansion plan for Ayala Center Cebu is to complete the original development of the Cebu Business Park’s (CBP) 9.6-hectare super block.
Expansion and renovation of the mall is part of CHI holding company, Ayala Land Inc.’s efforts to stamp the Ayala mall brand in all its malls.
The final expansion this year for Ayala Center is the newly-opened Ayala Services Center on Level 4 of Paseo Ciudad, right beside Fitness First.
The “one-stop shop” offers services for banking, payments, travel bookings, service outlets and others.
Service outlets such as Sky Cable, Western Union, Go Large Graphics, LBC, Mr. Coffee, ML Kwarta Padala, Core Pacific Money Exchange, Olvis Visa, Grand Hope and Speedtalk are located in the shop.
Western Union offers services for payments of utility bills as well as that of Smart, Globe, Social Security System, Philhealth and National Statistics Office. It also accepts ticket bookings for Philippine Airlines, Air Philippines, Zest Air and Cebu Pacific.
The service center directly connects to the new level of Gaisano Metro, which showcases sports apparel.
“We are expanding to serve our customers and provide better services to them. These services are available for the convenience of our shoppers to make it a one-stop-shop destination,” Monera said.

Kulba tuod ang dugang kasayoran gikan sa DOH: “Most of the cities in the list with the highest number of dengue cases are from Cebu Province.” Lakip ini ang Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, Danao, Talisay, Naga, ug Toledo.
Unsa ma’y gipaila ning maong lista? Wa’y lipod-lipod, dili matuis nga ang kahugaw ug pagpasagad lakip sa kinahanglang tagaan og kusganong pagtagad sa atong lokal nga kagamhanan. Ug dayag nga dili kini matuman kon wala’y katilingbanong pagtambayayong.

wowwwwwwwwwwwwwww
bakasaurus August 16th, 2010, 03:04 PM The photo shows us what needs to be done:
1. The metro needs to implode at this point and stop expanding. Dili maayo kung mupadayon og kalapad ang masakop sa "Metro Cebu". Else, that provincial feel and charm will be gone forever!
2. From 1, we therefore need to build up and tall including and most especially for urban living. We should really go for hi-rise residential buildings, including housing for urban poor. Even cheap-looking commie blocs are much better than those squatters and slums fringing our coasts.
3. Clean our waterways, create public space and parks along our rivers, i.e. Mananga River.
4. Public TRANSPORT!! BRT or LRT!
5. Plant more trees, especially along our streets!
6. Follow and implement proper zonation!
7.Stop the advancing development towards the mountains!! And reforest our watershed areas! Enough of mountainside and hillside real estate!
Again, we should concentrate development of highrises in clusters and specific zones. I don't want to see a Skyline from Naga to Lilo-an. It would look fantastic probably, but it wouldn't be a livable place.

Maybe it is because nga ang Taipei na incorporate siya sa forest mountains surrounding the city plus the wide parks and the presence of a lot of greens (trees) within the metropolis. Gikan man ka sa bukid nga gi preserve nila og maayo pa dulhog sa sentro sa Taipei, wa kaayoy mausab labi na the air we breathe og ang ka presko sa hangin...

diehardbisdak August 16th, 2010, 09:02 PM ^^ here...some info bai about WILLIAM S. GO
***********
William S. Go
Bernie Cahiles-Magkilat
Manila Bulletin
William S. Go has had sad experience with his joint venture with foreign investors but such experiences have not deterred his intentions to move forward. It's a matter of principle, he would say.
His latest battle was against giant U.S. retailer PriceSmart. After a long protracted legal fight, both parties signed the settlement agreement last August 12 that gave Go the management control of this high-end warehouse shopping facility.
PSMT Philippines was organized in 2000 with PriceSmart U.S. owning the majority of 52%, 38% by E-Class Corp. of Go and 10% by First Metro Investment Corp.
The company started operations in March 2001 and posted a net income of P9.87 million on its first year. The net income dropped to P1.3 million in the succeeding year before turning to a huge loss amounting to about P500 million in 2003 although sales exceeded P4.4 billion of that year.
PSMT operates 4 warehouse clubs in Alabang, Congressional Road in Quezon City, Fort Bonifacio and Baclaran. It closed its outlet in Ortigas and is now under lease.
Under the original joint venture agreement with PriceSmart U.S., Go served as chairman of the board.
"While I was chairman I have no management control," he recalled.
"I know what was going on so I started asking questions on the details of the reports that were regularly submitted to me," he said.
If only he was satisfied with the management's answers, he would have stopped asking.
"But they cannot answer satisfactorily," he recalled.
From a business point of view, Go said it is crucial that you have a control on expenses, there must be no unnecessary expenses.
"Perhaps, Americans are really like that giving fat salaries and generous fringe benefits to their people," he said.
"They did not listen to me," he said.
The company president was provided a four-bedroom house in Forbes, which to Go was not necessary.
"My business sense would say this is extravagance," he said.
On the first year of operations, the company was doing okay but the financial cracks started on the second year.
Go proposed a management committee to co-manage the business but was never heard.
"So I decided to go to court," he added.
After an ugly fight, Go won saying it was a happy ending for the partnership.
But PriceSmart is the not only joint venture that Go happened to be unlucky with.
One other joint venture was with a Taiwanese group in the middle of 1980s. The Taiwanese group agreed to buy all of Go' ramie staple fiber production.
For a five-year period, Go was the country's biggest ramie fiber exporter. But when China started dumping ramie, the Taiwanese refused to source from Go anymore. It was a sad story also but eventually both parties agreed to settle amicably.
Go blamed his failed joint ventures with foreign partners due to differences on how a business should be run.
"Filipino businessman are very conservative. We are very realistic and we don't want to rely on mere projections, we want actual figures and facts."
Another source of conflict could be the different cultures of two different investors.
Most important, Go said, a contract must be followed comma for comma.
"We have to follow the standard operating procedure and the details of the contract. There is no such things as bending a provision in the contract to accommodate a friend's request," he said.
Go, however, refused to believe that the Retail Trade Liberalization Act on which the PriceSmart of U.S. used as its entry point, is a failure. PriceSmart of U.S. was the first big foreign retailer that came into the country following the passage of the Act.
"It is not a failure of the law. In fact, that is a very good law in attracting foreign investments into the country. Look at big foreign retailers Makro and Watsons, these are successful joint ventures with local partners," he pointed out.
In all his failed partnerships, Go said he has now learned to be more careful next time he decides to forge a joint venture with a foreign partner.
He stressed transparency in business transactions. As a businessman, he said, one must be hands-on because if you have executives running the operations it is a must that you know everything is going on in the business.
After Go's successful buy-out of the majority of PriceSmart U.S. in PSMT Philippines, Go expects to turn around the losing high-end exclusive warehouse shipping outlet into a profitable venture by shifting towards the sale of more "mass- based" products in smaller packages, expanding its supply chain other than PriceSmart's and capital infusion if necessary.
"But what we are focusing in the next five to six months is to lessen the expected loses," Go Said.
To turn the company around, Go stressed the need to balance the product mix of PriceSmart from a mostly high-end imported products to include "mass-based" products to encourage more shoppers.
"We are going to make the product mix more accessible to all consumers by balancing the imports with local products and present a product mix that caters to all," Go said.
There would be a balance between local and imported products, mostly from the U.S. that are not present in the local supermarkets. As in the U.S. wholesale style of shopping, each pack consists of huge number of products and therefore a consumer ends up paying a large amount of items.
Its agreement with PriceSmart U.S. still allows PSMT Philippines continued use of the PriceSmart, its systems and supply chain.
If need be, the company will have to infuse additional capital. The company plans to expand outside of Metro Manila and plans for a Cebu expansion is underway.
The company has to maintain it's a membership shopping concept, which at present has between 50,000 to 60,000 members.
But Go, who now owns 90% of PSMT Philippines from his previous minority stake of 38%, admitted that turning the company around could be a long term goal.
In 2003, PSMT incurred P500 million and the losses for 2004 have yet to be known since fiscal year of PriceSmart ends in August 31.
The company has also to assume the loans of the former PSMT Philippines which was guaranteed by PriceSmart U.S. from the International Finance Corp.
The new owners of PSMT Philippines will have until 2012 to settle the IFC debt.
So far, PSMT's debt burden is placed at $15 million to $16 million.
The SGV is conducting an audit of the company. The agreement between Go and PriceSmart U.S. was forged just last August 12.
Maybe it is inherent among businessmen to have that positive outlook in life. But it is not just having a positive attitude, Go believes that everything will just turn out right.
"My happy disposition towards life is my secret in business. I always believe in the positive side of things," he added.
Even in treating his 4 kids, Go is the kind of father who would spoil a kid. His 4 kids are all in the U.S. Wherever Go went, he made sure to bring home something to his kids.
"I spoiled my kids. I am a good provider and I personally bought the things they need," he said. As a friend, he is a very loyal friend.
Go learned business from his father first working as a child in the family's "Fat & Thin" enterprise where he grew up in the champoy and butong pakwan factory.
His first business was a bangus fish pond but he earned his first millions from the ramie fiber venture.
His other supermarket outlet called Cost-U-Less is undergoing an aggressive expansion program with the establishments of an express-type of store in Fairview, Sta. Mesa and Sucat. The express grocery store concept for Cost-U-Less is expected to rival the Expresslane of Rustan's.
According to Go, each Cost-U-Less express outlet has an investment of P3 million.
"We are not thinking of competing against Rustan's. We are just doing our job," he added.
Together with PriceSmart and Cost-U-Less, Go has 700 employees. To his staff, Go's primordial concern is for them to be always honest.
Go, whose family hailed from Cebu, calls himself a Cebuano. He even put up Cebu Lechon, which delivers lechon, as a hobby because he is a big fan of the Cebu Lechon. He also operates a resort hotel in Cebu.
Had it not for the high-profile legal battle in PriceSmart, Go was not a known businessman. He was rather known for his Cost-U-Less business only. Go does not like the limelight, he would rather spend his mornings at the Cost-U-Less and the afternoons with PriceSmart, he also play golf twice a week.
Go's intensity as businessman could have been tempered by the legacy of his grandfather who served as an elder in the United Evangelical Church.
Asked as to the secret of his success as a businessman, the 52-year old businessman summarized it in "hardwork, hardwork and hardwork."

By the way, SM is now on the process of looking for viable tract of land in Toledo City for landbanking purposes.. This is according to my sources in a realty brokerage firm where SM Group had tapped for sourcing. I hope they can find one ASAP. An SM in Toledo will not just attract people within the East Cebu area but as well as people in San Carlos City and nearby municipalities in Negros Occidental.
By the way, i dont know if i have brought this up already, SM has an existing property in Basak, Lapu-Lapu City adjacent to the Vistabella Subdivision an i believe that in few years, the city will also have its own SM City too.
Sleepwalker August 17th, 2010, 05:36 AM Nice move from our Provincial Board...I still remember those years, that we had to sing the national anthem in Cebuano, followed by "Sugbo" provincial hymn.
Sing ‘Sugbo’ after anthem, PB asks DepEd (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/sing-sugbo-after-anthem-pb-asks-deped)
By Ricardo R. Flores Jr.
ALL students in Cebu Province should be made to sing the provincial hymn “Sugbo” after they sing the national anthem in flag ceremonies, a Capitol lawmaker said.
The Provincial Board (PB) approved yesterday two resolutions in support of the Buwan ng Wika, which is celebrated in August.
The other resolution reminds radio stations to play at least four original Pilipino music (OPM) pieces, as ordered 23 years ago by then president Corazon Aquino.
PB Member Julian Daan, who gained popularity as radio performer “Esteban Escudero”, proposed both resolutions.
In one, he reminded the Department of Education’s provincial office to implement a 2006 ordinance that declared “Sugbo” (as arranged by the late Angel R. Cabilao) as the provincial hymn.
This means all public elementary and high schools are supposed to sing it right after the national anthem during the flag ceremony.
Daan, in his resolution, said the ordinance has not been strictly observed.
“The singing of ‘Sugbo’ is imperative to make our students have a feeling of pride in our place, since the song aptly describes our beloved province, the source of our dreams and aspirations,” the resolution stated.
The second resolution supports President Benigno Aquino III’s order for the National Telecommunications Commission to strictly implement Executive Order 255.
Aquino’s mother had issued this order in July 1987. It requires ratio stations with musical programs to broadcast at least four OPM compositions every hour.
The Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit reportedly reminded President Aquino about the order in a recent meeting.
Sleepwalker August 17th, 2010, 05:51 AM Patent library to be set up in Cebu (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/patent-library-be-set-cebu)
By Katlene O. Cacho
THE Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines) will be setting up a patent library in Cebu to make foreign technological information more accessible to Cebuano businesses and researchers.
According to IP Philippines deputy director general Andrew Michael Ong, patent libraries or Innovation and Technology Support Offices (Itso) are “knowledge centers” where people can go to access the latest science and technological information.
It will compile information disclosed by scientists and inventors in the United States, Europe, Japan and other countries through their patents.
Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency
IP Philippines has chosen Cebu as the first model site for the project. “Cebu has a good track record where there is a close-knit relationship between the academe, private and public sector,” Ong said. He noted the presence of Cedf-it (Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology), which has helped in the improvement of the IT industry in the city.
Democratize system
According to the concept paper emailed to Sun. Star Cebu, IP Philippines said establishing an Itso network will strengthen local capacity to access patent information and make use of the patent system.
“This is in line with the mandate of IP Philippines and more specifically its 3D IP 2020 Vision as the Itso network will demystify and democratize the patent system and use it as a tool for national development,” the statement said.
Ong said the establishment of patent libraries will help local exporters especially in the gift, toys and houseware, fashion accessories and furniture industries become more competitive in the global market.
“This is helpful, especially that they are gearing towards competitiveness in the global market,” he said.
Itso will be established with multi-stakeholder involvement from inception to completion of project.
Institutions
Ong said IP Philippines has contacted different institutions like the academe, non-government agencies, local chambers, government agencies for the rollout of the project.
“In fact, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) has expressed interest in this project since they also have their materials library,” Ong said.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (Wipo), he added, will provide technical assistance while IP Philippines will manage the project in cooperation with other relevant government agencies.
“The only barrier seen for this project is the competency of the person in patent searching, given the difficulty of finding and sorting information from patents,” Ong said.
Wipo will be in Cebu on Aug. 19 to provide technical assistance in setting up Itso
SleMarKen August 17th, 2010, 06:31 AM Islands shirt sales unfazed by imitations
By Jessica B Natad
The Freeman, August 6, 2010
Island Souvenirs Inc. (ISI), the original makers of the "I love Cebu"
... souvenir shirt, is not very much disturbed with the proliferation of
imitation shirts in the province and even all throughout the country.
"We have already anticipated this (imitation.) Island Souvenirs is an
innovative company and the moment we do something new, we always
expect it to be copied (after some time,)" ISI president Jay Aldeguer
said.
He however told The Freeman in an interview that there is "really no
need" for people to buy imitation "I love Cebu " shirts, as ISI is
selling this at an affordable price.
The "I love Cebu " concept campaign came from Aldeguer himself. The
campaign, which was launched in February this year, has been ready
since last year. It was originally meant to give lovers, who usually buy
gifts for their loved ones, an option.
"The shirt was originally for couples on Valentines day, as the
design has a romantic connotation. I didn't expect it to last this
long. I think this is one of the most successful campaigns in Cebu,"
Aldeguer said.
He said the sales of the shirt design have added more than a hundred
percent to ISI's sales.
Aldeguer also attributed the success of the campaign to the Cebuano
personalities such as former Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano,
designer Arcy Gayatin, Cebuano singers Anna Fegi and Jimmy Marquez
and basketball star Dondon Hontiveros, who volunteered to join and
endorse the "I love Cebu shirts" for free.
"Some of them really called and asked if they can endorse the shirt.
We really are thankful to them. This is what makes the campaign
successful. The Cebuanos' love for Cebu is "simply amazing," Aldeguer
said.
The design has been brought to other parts of the country such as
Bohol (I love Bohol), Manila (I love Manila ), Boracay (I love Boracay),
Vigan (I love Vigan) and Palawan (I love Palawan). But the response
and patronage of the design in Cebu is "much more overwhelming than
in these places."
"This shows how much Cebuanos really love Cebu," Aldeguer said.
.
bakasaurus August 17th, 2010, 06:46 AM Hahaha. Monster strikes again sa ubang thread. This fierce love of Cebuanos for Cebu is taken in a negative light by some people who preach "open mindedness" when they are the ones whose minds are clouded by stereotypes.
IMO, a person who has insecurities with his own connection to his/her beloved hometown will get overwhelmed in the face of this strong Cebuano love and pride. They think that if you love Cebu so much, you couldn't love the rest of the country. Kay kinsa man ang lain diha nga mangusog, ug mangisog pa gyud kabahin sa paggamit sa Sinugbuanong Binisaya? Is there any stronger battlecry among other ethnolonguistic groups than the pesky US (Cebu-ANUS). Hehehe.
I admit there are some among us who go overboard. And here I think, we should also take precautions and watch ourselves kay basin overbearing na ang atoang love for our own. Again there is nothing wrong there as long as we do more of loving our own, than of putting the others down.
But clearly, naa gyud uban nga makurat aning atong strong conviction and passion. And they take offense and think we are just boasting off. What I would like to tell him/her is to celebrate his/her own. By celebrating one's own, it doesn't mean you cannot celebrate with others. It is a bit of the cliche that you have got to have enough love within you to share it with others. By golly, as long as one does not put down others, a Cebuano is one person who would most probably understand if a countryman loves his/her own hometown/province!
If there is a fitting description, I would say Cebuanos are CRAZY ABOUT CEBU.
Which is a very good SHIRT PRINT by the way!!
CRAZY ABOUT CEBU.
I would love to wear that on me! Hehehe.
P.S. Pakapin Storya diay.
about this Cebuano love and pride, it is to me like seeing another family who are so into each other. Kanang proud parents for example who would shout to the world that my son/daughter is the smartest or the most beautiful isn't she/he???! to the point nga it's sometimes embarassing? I think I would approximate it to be that kind of emotion. You know that what the parent is claiming may be far removed from reality and ikaw na lang ang mauwaw haha. But it is very ENDEARING, because you know that this pride and love that this parent has for his/her child, is something that you can identify with because it is also that same SHAMELESS love and pride you have for your own family. And so when I see this scene, I don't go hating the parent. I just smile to myself. Because I UNDERSTAND.

Catholic priest distributes hope, condoms in Philippine slum (Feature)
By Girlie Linao Aug 17, 2010, 3:12 GMT
Cebu City, Philippines - On a dingy side street in the central Philippine city of Cebu, about a dozen young girls lined up in front of a car, posing and smiling in hopes of getting their first customer for the night.
Under the street lamp's yellow light, the unseen passengers picked two girls through tinted windows. In less than 10 minutes, the car zoomed out of the street with the chosen girls inside, their pimps smiling.
Several more cars passed by and girls scurried out from a narrow alley where they sat on plastic chairs, eating dinner with their hands wrapped in plastic to avoid dirtying their polished nails.
Across the alley, Catholic priest Father Heinz Kulueke checked on a baby who had a fever while the mother, a prostitute herself, chatted with him.
Every night for the past eight years, Kulueke has led a small group of volunteers to provide medical aid and distribute condoms in the red-light district of Kamagayan, a 5-hectare slum area in Cebu City, where shanties have been turned into brothels.
They also visit nightclubs, restaurants, massage parlors and other commercial establishments where pimps can even get 'orders' for girls through mobile phones.
Kulueke's target is to get young girls off the streets of Cebu, a key tourist destination and bustling commercial hub 585 kilometres south of Manila. He also works with street children in hope of keeping them away from the flesh trade.
According to Kulueke, an estimated 10,000 prostitutes work in Cebu City, and about 40 per cent of them are minors, some as young as 12 years old. Many came from poor families and were trafficked.
Annie Suico, a city social worker, said the local government had stepped up efforts to stop prostitution and trafficking of children through various ordinances and inter-agency projects.
But she admitted that reaching out to the victims was not easy.
'The girls always say that they over 18 years old when they work in bars or nightclubs,' she said. 'It's really very difficult to find the girls because they hide their ages. You only find out when they seek your help.'
Suico said Kulueke's work has been a great boost to the city government's efforts to stop child prostitution and trafficking.
The 53-year-old missionary started his campaign after encountering young girls prostituted outside the University of San Carlos campus, where he teaches philosophy.
While the Roman Catholic Church opposes the use of artificial contraception such as condoms, Kulueke said the situation on the ground calls for a different approach.
'Many girls get infected with sexually transmitted diseases or HIV/AIDS,' he told the German Press Agency, dpa. 'There are also numerous forced abortions after unwanted pregnancies leading to death in several cases.'
One of Kulueke's volunteers is a 21-year-old former prostitute, who identified herself as Liza.
She was only 13 years old when she ran away from home in 2002. In dire need of money, she was recruited to be a waitress in Cebu City but was surprised when she was brought to a brothel.
'I was so scared then,' she recalled while distributing condoms to some of her 'batchmates' in Kamagayan. 'My first customer was a burly German man who beat me up when I didn't know what to do.'
Liza said she eventually got hooked on drugs, like most of the girls in Kamagayan.
'At first, the pimps forced the drugs on me so I can give better service,' she said. 'But later on, I needed the high to forget what I was doing.'
After nearly two years, Liza decided she'd had enough and fled the brothel. Kulueke's team took her to a recovery house in Manila, where she finished high school.
Kulueke, who has been in Cebu since 1986, said the turnover of volunteers was very high due to the frustrating work.
'Sometimes even I get very tired and exhausted trying to help all these people,' he added. 'It could take many weeks and even months before we manage to get people out and help them start a better life. But I cannot give up hope.'

SleMarKen August 17th, 2010, 08:20 AM @Ronnie, kahit anong negative pa ng Cebu ang ipost mo, we will understand... As I said, you have a cebuano heart. There's no doubt that you really love Cebu...:okay: not plastic, no hidden agenda at all "ala maganda but deep inside pangit"...:D
Hahaha.
Hehehe.

about this Cebuano love and pride, it is to me like seeing another family who are so into each other. Because I UNDERSTAND.
hahaha! Monster strikes again...
From Vietnam, to Taiwan, Malaysia then Bangkok and now our beloved Cebu...
there's only one thing I don't like about that kind of attitude, "coz of frustrations as he cannot accept the truth that others are better, by his adulation of his city/country to the extent of putting down other city/country by singling out the negatives of the place is unacceptable for me".
And now here comes Cebu and as a Cebuano, defending my state caused the argument of my being boastful of Cebu against other destinations...
whether vietnam or taiwan, malaysia or bangkok, cebu or manila... putting these places down at the expense of pulling your city/country up... I will stand to defend these places. I'll always support the victim...:)

Cebu City, Philippines - ...
According to Kulueke, an estimated 10,000 prostitutes work in Cebu City, and about 40 per cent of them are minors, some as young as 12 years old. Many came from poor families and were trafficked.
no offense taken.
i just find it hard to believe that the number could reach 10,000! and we do
have a very strong advocacy against prostitution of minors and an even
stronger stand/program against human trafficking.
as you said, this is not unique to cebu, not even the philippines. but it's good
to be reminded once in a while, thanks.

Jimbu August 17th, 2010, 09:39 PM FLI, Cebu City to break ground on SRP development (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/fli-cebu-city-break-ground-srp-development)

By Linette C. Ramos
FILINVEST Land Inc. (FLI) and Cebu City Hall is set to break ground and launch their joint venture project at the South Road Properties (SRP) next week.
Officials say project would start earning for the City by next year.
Joel Mari Yu, managing director of Cebu Investment and Promotions Center (CIPC), said the City could start getting its 10 percent share of FLI’s sales at the end of this year, but only if the developer is able to sell or lease condo units.
FLI will break ground on Aug. 28 for their Citta de Mare project, which are Italian inspired residential buildings with commercial areas.
But Tristan las Marias, FLI vice president for Visayas and Mindanao, said the company is not sure yet when they will be able to start selling the units since they are still securing permits.
“We’re still processing the permits and license to sell. We’re starting to receive intentions to buy already. Maybe by fourth quarter we will get permits and license.
We can remit to the City after that on what is sold and collected,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.
He projected that by third quarter of 2011, they will be able to remit the City’s
share in the earnings from the joint venture.
FLI is the joint venture partner of the City Government in the development of a 40-hectare lot in the SRP and is also the owner of the 10.6-hectare Pond F, which it bought for P1.592 billion from the City last year.
It will start developing the 10-hectare portion of the 40-hectare lot covered by the joint venture agreement, and the development of the 10.6-hectare Pond F.
City by the sea
On the 10-hectare joint venture area, six medium-rise residential buildings and a four-hectare central park will be constructed to form part of the 40-hectare “Citta di Mare,” which is Italian for city by the sea.
The first phase of Citta di Mare is expected to be finished in three to five years.
Commercial and retail complexes, a 2,000-square-meter exhibition tent, a boardwalk with fine dining restaurants and fastfood outlets will also be constructed in Pond F, the 1.1-kilometer stretch of seafront lots in the SRP.
Yu said FLI is now training its sales agents and brokers, and pre-selling activities will be in full swing soon.
“Upon conclusion of every sale, 10 percent of every sale of any income will be remitted to the City Government, whether it’s a sale or a lease,” he said.
As stated in the joint venture contract, the City gets a 10-percent share in the sale of built-up units in the 40-hectare area, or a minimum guaranteed return, whichever is higher. The City will get its share annually.
But if the minimum guaranteed return, which is the sale price of the land plus 20 percent, is higher than the City’s 10-percent share, FLI is obliged to make additional payments at the end of the five-year development period.

Alexander Ace Sotto, senior construction manager for Visayas and Mindanao of 8990 Housing Development, said that the company is still conducting a feasibility study on the concept.

Parian of Cebu
Parian is one of the oldest and most historic places in the country. It started as a small community of Chinese traders in the sixteenth century, grew into the residential headquarters of the most dynamic entrepreneurs of Cebu and became the genteel district where resided the wealthiest families of the city.
Parian evolved into a distinct settlement around 1590 when Chinese traders and artisans came to reside on the north side of the Spanish settlement of Cebu which Miguel Lopez de Legazpi had founded in 1565. The Spanish settlement was the section of the port area them called ciudad. An estuary (later called Parian estero) flowed on the north side of this settlement and on its opposite bank the Chinese built a community that came to be know as Parian (a word somewhat perplexing etymology but most probably derived from a Mexican word for market place).

But if the minimum guaranteed return, which is the sale price of the land plus 20 percent, is higher than the City’s 10-percent share, FLI is obliged to make additional payments at the end of the five-year development period.

gikopya nabaya ni sa ubang provincia nga kada lungsod magpasundayag pud sila ug festival dili lang pud magcreate ug ilahang version of sinulog which i have no problem with kay sto. nino is everywhere man bisan diri sa us mag sinulog man gani pud. pero having a 2nd festival for the province is indeed a big boost sa tourism sa cebu labi na in the middle of the year.
just because its held at cicc nga dili sa cebu city mora wala siyay following. although ang mga syudadnon are not voting for the province but we cebuanos should be in full support for pasigarbo sa sugbo festival. diha man gud to issue bahin sa daanbantayan and gwen nganong wala mo apil ang ilang lungsod sa pasigarbo nga akong nadunggan from cctn intv 47.
ang pasundayag sa festival queen mao akong na amuse kaayo kay superb or outragious ug mga creative designs which can promote sa atong local fashion designers. there's also the original music or jingle creation business pud nga mainvolve which i think is a good way to promote the entire gamut of cebuano arts, culture and music which in turn mo create ni siya ug other brand of professions kay magsige lang ug nurses ug it na atong mga eskuwelahan ug offer sa ilang mga curso.

Sinulog and nightly activities can make an exception. Basta dli jud ko uyon anang rally2x dha ky in the 1st place Fuente Osmeña is for recreation and enjoyment..
:ohno:
Henz August 20th, 2010, 06:36 AM Yes correct at sir fred......... Kana Freedom Park, limpyuhon na and shall be restored as a Park, then diha na paralihon sila...
I think dili nagpasabot na open and public space na sya then pede na mag rally.. dapat e regulate lang jud seguro... and the Freedom Park, imbis na Park, nahimo na noon extension sa Carbon...

Proposed Design for the Upgrading of Fuente Osmena Circle, 2010
ohhhh s**tt!!! kanindot ba ani! i hope this will push through!
i don't think this will push through. the circle is an open public space for different activities. rallies, shows, demonstrations, and other public gatherings are held here. where else would cebuanos gather to be heard and seen?
okay ra man siguro kung ipadayon lang gihapon nila ang rehabilitation sa fuente coz the park really needs it. IMO it doesn't already conform to the ever changing landscape of cebu city. old school na kaayo siya og dating. and with regards to holding of public activities such as rallies, demos, shows, etc. YES they are free to do it PROVIDED they follow set rules. that's the very essence of democratic principles. allow every citizen to do whatever he likes but he has to be aware of his responsibility that his freedom is not absolute, infinite and limitless but rather it has its own boundaries and limitations to uphold of. I GREATLY SUPPORT THE NEW FUENTE!!!! ;)
Sleepwalker August 20th, 2010, 09:17 AM ^^Alleluah! Amen to that brotha!
Kay kini ra bang mga rallyista, kusog ra kaayo sige'g sagbot sagbot sa karsada ug ang uban, mag spray paint pa gud sa mga bongbong ug gutters.
