october and november yet. i'll just wait.

unya na lang sad ko mo hisgot tingali kung unsa'y atong mga plano pero rest
assured SSC's inputs would be considered, though i will really have to do things
in the spirit of what is best for cebu and the country in general (MCIAA is actua-
lly a national government corporation). and that means i may have to act on
what i think is right, and not on what is popular, in the footsteps of tomas ....

i might not be frequest here again in the next two months as i balance wrapping
up things at city hall and preparing for the work ahead, later i may have more
time to spend here.

one thing i can assure you - i am not corrupt and i will not be corrupted ...

Congratulations! looking forward for a much better management in MCIAA.

Not to offend the guys up north but IMO, MCIAA services is way better in terms of passenger comfort and convenience. Since mid-1990's I always book for international flights direct to/fro Mactan airport and avoiding NAIA as much as possible. So far I haven't had any experience with Mactan airport personnel, customs, airport taxi and regular taxi's being corrupt and dishonest.

I trust Sir Paul will keep the tradition of order, safety, convenience and corrupt-free MCIAA!

Gardenia to spend P100M on new Cebu factory

GARDENIA BAKERIES Philippines, Inc. -- the market leader in supermarket loaf sales -- announced Tuesday it was building another factory in Lapu-Lapu, Cebu to expand its reach outside Luzon.

The bread firm is investing an initial P20 million on equipment and may eventually hike spending to a total P100 million by end-2011 which should increase production capacity by 17% to 14,000 loaves per hour, the company's president and general manager, Simplico P. Umali, Jr. said in a press briefing.

Its Laguna factory can churn out 12,000 loaves per hour. The new plant will come on stream by January, Mr. Umali said. -- Jessica Anne D. Hermosa

Gardenia plans bakery in Cagayan de Oro
March 17, 2010, 4:52pm

Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc., the country’s biggest breadmaker, is now looking at Cagayan de Oro or a suitable bread plant manufacturing location in Northern Mindanao instead of Cebu for its planned expansion in the south.

Simplicio Umali Jr., Gardenia Philippines president, told reporters that the company is now looking at Northern Mindanao instead because of the quality of water supply in Cagayan de Oro compared to that of Cebu.

Was back to Cebu nung weekend. Galing ako Dumaguete nun. Rode a boat to Liluan? or Sibulan? can't remember. then me and my gang rented a van papuntang cebu city. ang dami palang magagandang lugar on the road. aside from the fact na yung landtrip eh tanaw na tanaw mo yung dagat na pagkalinaw linaw, you also get to see beautiful historical landmarks on the way. Gaya sa Carcar, pati dun sa lugar just before you really enter Cebu City. Naga ba yun?

Then finally when we entered Cebu..ang masasabi ko lang, it has become really dense. Dun kami dumaan sa SRP. dalawa pala reclamation projects ng Cebu? ang nadaanan ko lang ata before yung north. then papasok sa city center, ok naman, nakakaligaw lang siguro. we stayed sa holiday plaza sa ramos st. ata. medyo marami-rami mga entertainment pubs around sa area na yun. alam nyo na siguro yun. likod lang kami ng club ultima. astig ng building na yun. reminds me of hyatt hotel in manila. makulay din. hehe.

sayang overnight stay lang. have to be back to davao sa morning. nice experience. the last time I was in Cebu nasa Ayala Center lang kami. Parklane hotel ata yun. May u/c na hi-rise building sa tapat nun. May pa yun so most likely done na yun.

Wealth in and of water

Gabino M. Abejo, Jr.
Abejo Builders Corp.

http://www.bworldonline.com/webpics/articles/image/201009211ffca.jpg
Gabino M. Abejo, Jr.

Cebu City is the hub of trade, industry, tourism and education in the Visayas. Steeped in history and rich in local traditions, it has been consistently rated among the top island destinations in Asia. However, it is also a known fact that Metro Cebu has had a water supply problem for some time now because of deforestation and seawater seeping into its underground water supply. That water is a basic human necessity cannot be ignored in this populous area and 27-year-old Gabino M. Abejo, Jr. has risen to this challenge. He has channeled his drive, energy and boundless enthusiasm into projects to provide clean, safe water to barangays in Talisay and Consolacion, Cebu.

Leveraging on the resources and experience of Abejo Builders Corp., Mr. Abejo guided his family’s business into diversifying from construction into bulk water production. The company was created in 1999 as a family-owned construction business based in Mandaue City. At that time, Mr. Abejo’s brother Gerry headed the company that was involved in small piping projects with the Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD). Seeing an opportunity to supply potable water by engineering their own water delivery system, the Abejo family began shifting their focus to water production. The company partnered with a Manila-based water distribution consultant to learn more about the industry.

A big break occurred in 2003 when the company won a bid to supply a minimum of 4,000 cubic meters (cu. m.) of potable water to the MCWD for distribution in Talisay City. As this was the company’s first venture into the business, it took 12 months to build the system. In 2005, Gerry stepped down, and his younger brother, Gabino, took over as vice-president of the business.

Mr. Abejo has had some experience in the water industry. After graduating from Northwood University in Florida in 2004, he came home and set up a water refilling station in Mactan, where water is mostly brackish. The success of his business led to two more branches within the next nine months.

As head of the company, Mr. Abejo saw the huge potential of expanding into the bulk water system. He decided to restructure the company with water supply as its primary service and construction as a secondary service. Under his leadership, the company made significant investments in their water system model to ensure cost efficiency. This allowed the company to offer reasonable and competitive prices to both customers and water districts.

From an initial supply of 4,000 cu. m. daily, the Talisay bulk water system increased production to an average of 5,600 cu. m. daily by 2007. A year later, the company won another MWCD contract to supply a minimum of 7,000 cu. m. daily of potable water to the town of Consolacion. Despite being a fledgling in the water business, they were able to supply the MCWD with up to 15,000 cu. m. a day.

Moreover, lessons from their previous project enabled Abejo Builders to complete the new system in just six months or half the time it took to complete their first water system. The six-month turnaround is now a standard guarantee in their contracts.

With an eye for opportunity, Mr. Abejo also envisioned a way to help the communities where their bulk water supply system was located. Noting that not all houses in the barangays had ready access to the water supplied by the MCWD, Abejo Builders provided communal faucets in as many as 12 to 15 areas in the barangay. Water is available 24 hours a day and is free of charge. This was the start of his "Barangayan Water Project."

However, the water needs of the community proved to be too great, prompting Mr. Abejo to expand the project into a level three water supply system. This meant installing water meters in all houses and providing water directly to the barangay residents, at no cost to the local government.

Mr. Abejo also pegged the price per cubic meter at P1 lower than the MCWD’s to further subsidize the expenses in the community. The connection fee of P4,000 is also charged over a 12-month installment plan.

Mr. Abejo sees this as building a sense of social responsibility in his company. He hopes to replicate this system in other barangays wherever the company’s bulk water supply system is located.

Inspired by his company’s rapid growth and success, Mr. Abejo aggressively pushes on, aiming to further increase the volume he supplies to the MCWD by an additional 25,000 cu. m.

This year, he has already won five new supply contracts, two systems of which they have started to build. Apart from servicing the MCWD, Mr. Abejo is also in talks with two private companies to supply them with 4,000 cu. m. a day using surface water technology and brackish water desalination technology.

To undertake new and bigger projects, Mr. Abejo relies on his employees to deliver. To him, they are the company’s strongest assets, and he makes it a point to meet with his management and staff regularly to discuss problems and opportunities.

Every six months the company also organizes team building activities for the staff. He believes that employees continually become more efficient and innovative due to their culture of mutual trust, respect and teaming. He considers this to be the key to Abejo Builders’ growing competitiveness.

Confident of his team and optimistic about the opportunities in the water sector, Mr. Abejo is keen about the company’s expansion. There are plans to list on the Philippine Stock Exchange, acquire other bulk water supplier companies with existing contracts, and to bid on projects for other water districts outside Cebu, such as in Southern Luzon and other parts in the Visayas and Mindanao.

With youthful exuberance, Mr. Abejo is charting a course that he hopes will help improve the lives of his fellow Cebuanos and other Filipinos.

"It truly motivates me when I see poor people in the barangays living better and healthier lives because of the 24-hour potable water our company supplies directly to their houses. The never-ending show of gratitude whenever I visit these barangays inspires me to work harder and to duplicate this project in areas not served by the local water district," he says.

Cebu construction sector booming

CEBU CITY – Cebu’s construction sector is optimistic that it will post an eight percent year-on-year growth in the next 12 years.

“Cebu is enjoying a construction boom with the expansion [of several developments] and [the presence of] new players in (sectors such as) business process outsourcing, hotels, universities and road infrastructure,” Cebu Contractors Association (CCA) president Peter Paul Dy Jr. said in a recent interview.

Dy noted that the economic crisis had not affected the construction sector in Cebu since the growth in tourism and business process outsourcing gave rise to more hotels and commercial spaces.

Residential housing and high-rise buildings are also areas of growth.

“Real estate in Cebu and the surrounding cities will experience a different economic landscape as the demand for residential housing will continue over the next few years,” Dy said.

Dy said the growth in the industry was seen in the good turnout during the first PhilConstruct Visayas, a construction exhibit in Cebu that featured 300 booths representing products and services from 21 countries.

LP backs Villarete as airport manager
By Edison delos Angeles, Correspondent

THE Liberal Party in Cebu City is supporting the bid of Engr. Nigel Paul Villarete as general manager of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA).
Mayor Michael Rama said he was hopeful their support would convince members of the MCIAA board to appoint Villarete, the Cebi City planning and development officer, for the position.

“The most important thing is for him to get the appointment of general manager,” said Rama in a press conference yesterday.

Villarete posted in his facebook account yesterday that he applied for the position of airport general manager in 2001, 2004 and 2006.

He said that while he received reports that “a certain Mr. Benigno Aquino III wrote a recommendation letter/letter of reference supporting me” he has yet to see these documents.

Good article about BRT.

Pinoy Kasi
BRT

By Michael Tan
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 06:01:00 09/22/2010

Filed Under: transportation, Railway, Housing & Urban Planning

IT HAS a nice ring to it, I thought, and if people asked what it meant, I could always say “Bisdak Rail Transit.”

I did a “Bisdak” column two weeks back, urging an end to the discrimination against the “Bisaya” (now a generic term often targeting Cebuanos but also lumping together all the different ethnolinguistic groups of the Visayas). More than that, I urged Cebuanos not to get mad and to get even instead, asserting “Bisdak” (Bisayang Dako or Great Bisaya).

There’s much to be proud of in the Visayas, I argued. I mentioned how interior designers now consider Cebu a hub for innovative and high-quality furniture, but that was only one aspect of Bisdak. There’s more that I didn’t mention: the aesthetic that drives furniture design also comes through in architecture and the performing arts, a blend of Old World continental urbanidad (cosmopolitanism) with pre-colonial folk audacity and exuberance.

Several cities in the Visayas, notably Cebu and Iloilo, have initiated heritage conservation programs, even as newer buildings combine modernity with aesthetic and environmental sense. I don’t usually like malls, but the Ayala complex in Cebu City has a new section called the Terraces, with many old trees retained, blending in with glass and steel to create a serene oasis.

My point is that Cebuanos and the Bisaya, and people outside of Metro Manila in general, should put an end to cultural schizophrenia: on one hand constantly being hurt and intimidated by criticism of imperial Manila (and Tagalogs) that labels any non-Tagalog as “probinsiyano” or “promdi” (a country bumpkin) and yet wanting so badly to ape Metro Manila and Tagalog culture.

The urge to duplicate Metro Manila as a model for urban development is what’s most distressing. If we are to learn from Metro Manila, it should be more of negative example. Certainly the first half of the 20th century was marked by much more careful, and aesthetically guided, urban planning, including, for example, a dream of Quezon City as a garden metropolis.

Metro Manila mutants

Alas, the plans were waylaid and we now have the mess that is Metro Manila, ugly and dangerous. Even worse, the monster is mutating into Mega Manila, the suburbs duplicating the worst of the metropolis.

Cebu is in danger of copying many of the worst mistakes of Metro Manila, including the carelessness with the environment. But there are also signs that Cebu, and I hope other Visayan cities, can take the lead with alternative models of urban development.

Cebu City will be doing this with BRT, which is not Bisdak rail transit but a Bus Rapid Transit System. Recognizing the city has grown, going through urban sprawl that spills over into several towns and cities in Cebu Province, its officials and city planners have looked into more efficient rapid transit systems. And rather than duplicate the expensive LRT (light rail transit) and MRT (metro rail transit) of Metro Manila, they’ve opted to use existing buses, retrofitting roads and building additional infrastructure to create the BRT.

Readers who have been following my column know that I love the MRT and LRT. Just two months ago, I expressed my dismay over another delay in the latest extension of the MRT. The systems are already overloaded, and cover too little of Metro Manila, leaving commuters to the mercy of an inefficient and dangerous system of buses and jeeps.

Then I read about plans for an alternative bus rapid transit system in the Sept. 12 issue of the Inquirer, with still another full-page spread last Saturday describing the proposed Cebu system, which should be operational by 2013.

Cheaper

In the Sept. 12 article, professor Cresencio Montalbo Jr. of the UP National Center for Transportation Studies explains that given a budget of $1 billion, you can only build 7 kilometers of subway rail, or 14 kilometers of elevated rail. Compare that with 426 kilometers of a bus transit system.

By opting for a BRT, Cebu City will spend about $350 million to get some 50 kilometers, almost as extensive as Metro Manila’s LRT and MRT combined. A total of 190 buses will be fielded to transport 300,000 passengers daily, dispatched every few minutes.
Phase 1 will run from Bulacao to Talamban. The central segment is the old, historic downtown area. Phase 2 will connect other parts of Metro Cebu, the system running from Bulacao to Tabunok, down to Talisay, further down to Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and the Mactan airport.

Quick disclosure time, because several readers did ask me after I wrote the Bisdak column:

No, I am not from Cebu or any part of the Visayas. No, I have no business interests in Cebu. No, I was not wined and dined in Cebu when I wrote Bisdak; I was there to speak at the convention of the Society for Adolescent Medicine in the Philippines, which has a fine complement of Cebuano members who are the ones who end up warning me about the city’s problems like its precarious water supply and a lack of “cultural” fare such as classical music concerts. (I find myself retorting that I don’t get to do concerts even in Manila, and we get too much water, “Ondoy”-style, in Metro Manila during the monsoon.)

My interest in Cebu City is more of a possible place for retirement, or at least semi-retirement since I began parenting so late and so will have to continue working till I am at least 80. But I can envision myself moving away from Manila to a more elderly-friendly city even as the kids grow up in safer and cleaner environs, and where there is more careful urban planning, oriented toward people and the environment.

Which takes us back to the BRT. It’s a system Metro Manila should consider because it taps into the bus system, but puts some discipline into it. The BRT planners found their models in Bogota, Colombia, which in turn borrowed from Curitiba, Brazil. Bogota’s system is particularly relevant to the Philippines because it used to have a chaotic bus system similar to Metro Manila’s, where bus drivers become homicidal speed maniacs because they are racing to get passengers—“guerra del centimo” in Spanish (a fight for the last centavo).

Cebu City, fortunately, did not reach the point Metro Manila did with the buses. Instead, it has an army of jeepney drivers, many of whom will lose their routes with the BRT, but the city government intends to hire some of those drivers. The drivers will be more orderly, taking fixed routes and waiting their turn.

Unlike the MRT and LRT, which have higher fares than jeepneys and buses, Cebu’s BRT will be able to charge the same fares as jeepneys (right now, P6.50 for the first 5 kilometers), and we all know what commuters will eventually favor, given those same fares for a jeepney and a bus in a BRT.

If Cebu succeeds with its BRT, it will be another source for Bisdak pride, paving the way, I hope, for urban renewal elsewhere in the Philippines, including Metro Manila.

cebu city has nothing to do with south cebu because its not the city's jurisdiction anymore. its the provincial government that promotes the whole island and province of cebu. and yes, most of the historical and cultural sites still lives on up to this date and is being enjoyed by the people there.

Bigfoot-owned film school carves niche in the Philippines

Wednesday, 22 September 2010 11:44

AMERICAN teacher Nichole Post dreams of one day making films that would help create better understanding among different peoples around the world.

To achieve her dream, the 28-year-old aspiring filmmaker has taken time off from teaching English in South Korea and enrolled at the International Academy of Film and Television in the central Philippines.

The academy, ranked as one of the best film schools in the world by The Hollywood Reporter, was founded in 2004 by Bigfoot Entertainment, an independent film producer, on Mactan Island, Cebu province.

Post said she plans to apply for an internship position at Bigfoot, which also has a state-of-the art film and television studio on Mactan, or search for a producing job after finishing her one-year diploma program on filmmaking next March.

“I want to make social documentaries, like a film on the effects of the 2001 [economic] crisis on the citizens of Buenos Aires or a film on the immigration dispute between the US and Mexico,” she said.

“I want to focus on the social aspects of the issues, talk to the people and learn as much as possible from these people,” she added. “As for the public, I hope I would be able to touch someone and help them have better understanding of other people.”

Matt Lubetich, managing partner of Bigfoot Ventures Ltd, parent company of Bigfoot Entertainment, said the film school has hundreds of students from more than 30 countries around the world.

In the academy, students learn the art of filmmaking and get hands-on technical training from award-winning mentors. They also get educated about the business aspect of the industry, Lubetich said.

Lubetich noted that the academy offers courses at a third of the cost of education in other top-rated international film schools, such as New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts or Germany’s Baden-Wurtemberg Film Academy.

In a continuing effort to give its students hands-on training, the academy recently launched an immersion program that would allow students to experience working on an actual feature film production and earn film credits.

Keith Sensing, executive director of the academy, said students in the first class of the nine-month program would be working on a $1-million movie to be directed by American filmmaker and actor John Milton Branton. (Bloomberg News)

When I first found out that former mayor Tomas Osmeña prefers BRT over MRT/LRT. I frowned.

BRT is Bus Rapid Transit. "Buses" in the narrow streets of Cebu City?! My mind is thinking of Metro Manila's streets filled with buses. Congested. The arrogant bus drivers.

I researched. I browsed Google for images. But it was the Youtube video that got me convinced that BRT is way better than Metro Manila's LRT system.

In my observation, BRT is similar to LRT - the bus is connected to an electric cable at the top, but run on the ground, and not on a rail track.

According to the news article posted in the Inquirer, BRT is cheaper than MRT/LRT. It would cost 7$ M per kilometer to build, compared to LRT which is 32$ and 60$M per kilometer.

The project would start at the Bulacao to Talamban route, and would be practically completed by 2013 if everything goes according to plan.

Cebu build big projects : NRP SRP and SUBWAY(not food chain)
It's time that we build something for the people of Cebu
which Cebu sustainably will fulfill and will manage better
than by corrupt old Manila w/c Pnoy is now fixing..
A modern rail system that would surely blend with modern Cebu.
Look into the employment, a bondable infrastructure, and
the intrinsic environmental value it will create.

^^^ Sorry but I don't believe you. Membership shopping is a niche market. I dont know exactly why Makro closed but in the case of S&R (which is owned by Puregold btw) has been doing very well since they re-opened in 2006. One reason they have done so well might be the high quality of their stocks and competitive pricing.

Yeah, I agree. If we have money and spend it on BRT, we don't have money for LRT/MRT thereafter. Now I know the meaning of the saying "You can't have your cake and eat it too".
But why use a softer terminology sir! I mean "prohibitive" instead of "restrictive". hehehe, just to be "brutal" about it!

THE field in this Sunday’s 2010 Cebu IDSF World Dancesport Open and 5th Dancesport sa Sugbu just got tougher as couples from Australia, Turkey and Canada signed up for the tournament, which will be held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino Grand Ballroom.

Aside from the three countries, there are also dancers from Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Korea, Singapore, Turkey and Philippines vying for the Latin and Standard open titles.

“This is the first time the competition will be held in two consecutive years because in the past, it was staged every other year,” Dancesport Team Cebu City’s April Tudtud Ramos said.

She added the organizing committee is eyeing to make it an annual event to make Cebu the future Mecca of dancesport in the Philippines.

i doubt if any of the garcia siblings right now will be able to win against davide the next time around.

with her allies starting to desert her, she faces a lonely road ahead, just like gma.

I am sure that the LP will make sure that their bet wins in 2013, along with its senatorial canditates to ensure political and legislative policy is in place.

that includes big ticket items like BRT since it is supposed to be completed around 2013.

SM, Carlson to open Radisson Cebu hotel

EXPECTING a boom in the tourism business, the hotel arm of the Sy retail, banking and property conglomerate, will open its upscale hotel in Cebu on Sept. 27.

The 400-room hotel will be the Carlson group’s first Radisson Blu hotel in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Although the hotel’s completion was put on hold during the nineties due to the prevailing business climate then, we never lost our vision of one day opening its doors to welcome guests from all over the world,” Elizabeth T. Sy, president of SM Hotels and Conventions Corp., said in a statement on Thursday.

Ms. Sy said the local tourism industry faces bright prospects amid the resurgence of the economy.

“The opening of the first Radisson Blu hotel in Asia-Pacific is a major milestone. More hotels that are under development and in operation in the region will also become Radisson Blu hotels, as we deploy the brand globally,” Jean-Marc Busato, managing director for Carlson Hotels Asia Pacific said in a separate statement.

Carlson Hotels has 1,060 hotels in 77 countries.

The Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu will have 10 function rooms, two ballrooms, a spa and fitness center, a lobby lounge, an all-day dining restaurant, and a swimming pool.

It is located at Cebu City’s North Reclamation Area, near the international port, and SM City Cebu.

Last year, Cebu attracted more than 1.6 million foreign and domestic travelers. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

The recently held East Asian Inter-regional Tourism Forum in Tinh Quang Ninh Province in Vietnam on Sept. 13 to 17, brought about renewed cooperation in tourism and academe for twelve members: Cebu, Philippines; Chiang Mai, Thailand; Gangwon, Korea; Jilin, China; Primorsky, Russia; Quang Ninh, Vietnam; Sarawak, Malaysia; Tottori, Japan; Tuv, Mongolia; Yogyagarta, Indoneisa; Luang Prabang, Laos; and Siam Riep, Cambodia. This yearly event showcases the East Asian Inter-regional Tourism Forum exhibits, the Governors’ committee meetings/presscons and joint declaration of cooperation, the academic sessions and cultural fellowships and tours.

The Cebu Province was headed by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Agnes Magpale; the academic by this writer; tourism staff by Grace Paulino;the media and protocol by Ronald, Minerva and Ressel.

The Joint declaration/bilateral meetings yielded so many ‘firsts’ in Cebu as it hosts the 2011 East Asian Inter-regional Tourism Forum in September, 2011. The unanimous approval was ably handled by Gov. Garcia: The 2010 Tourism, Trade and Investment Forum And Expo; the holding of the first everEast Asian Inter-regional Tourism Forum Arts and Cultural Festival; and more enriching academic thrusts. One Cebu chairman Enrison Benedicto gave an overview of the One Cebu Expo. In the standing committee meetings, Agnes Magpale was able to draw out initial plans for flights/ cruise programs which was re-iterated in the bilateral matching led by Governor Gwen. The academic sessions had resolutions to expand the East Asian Inter-regional Tourism Forum Web site/info; develop faculty/student/industry/government academic, community and cultural programs; develop an assistance program for victims of global warming among its members; and focus on research and human resource development and language programs.

Indeed , it will be a busy 2011 for Cebu.

hahaha... dili nako makigargue nimo bro basta on my part dili maayo tanawon nga ikaw makakita nga ang mga foreigners nagkaon unya naay manglimos nila. ok lang siguro kung naglakaw unya duolon kay manglimos pero nagkaon man. ayaw ko ingna ikaw ganahan lang ka magtanaw ana? so that is what im trying to say. ok, ill just not use the word 'luod' but 'laen' lang 'uncomfortable' ba. and don't worry bro, i am not that kind of person just because i said it! pero at least man lang ba, presentable pud ang surroundings nimo everytime you eat. but that's just my humble opinion nganong namalhin sila. you had yours and basin tinuod diay gyud na imohang pagduda. mas maayo hinuon. :)

If I remember right, there was a McDonalds at the Collonade before...

...not sa Collonade bai but at the former Plaza Fair (now 368 Shopping Center)...McDo was transferred to a new location opposite Gaisano Capital South due to a fire that toppled Plaza Fair...when it was re-opened as 368 Center, their area was taken over by Mang Inasal head on with Colon's 4th Jollibee store :okay:

Eastern Dragon
September 23rd, 2010, 11:25 AM
chowking, even jollibee and mcdo are reeling from the mang inasal karon.

chowking in fact is losing not only market share but managers also to mang inasal.

not only diha sa colon, i know of one chowking outlet sa manila which had to close nya wala pa gyud nireopen.

the beauty of competition.

good news...from Hi-Rise Thread...

posted by @viva_la_raza:

I've been lurking for quite sometime but decided to break my silence today to make an important announcement. J King and Sons Chairman, Mr. Richard King, has announced the on-going expansion of Sky Extreme Adventures which is located on the deck of Crown Regency Hotel and Towers (tower 1) will soon be linked with tower 3. AN 80-FOOT 4-LEVEL STRUCTURE WILL BE BUILT ON TOP OF TOWER 1 TO ADD 5 MORE ADRENALIN-PUMPING ACTIVITIES. (this will make the hotel 44-stories high already)

Here are the new rides to look forward to:

1. Tower Zip- Zip yourself across tower 1 & 3 buildings on a cable line with a view of the city below.......almost 500 feet high! (construction on-going)

2. Sky Glider- Travel back across two buildings 45 degrees on a glider that uses air resistant brake system combined with thrill of height. (construction on-going)

3. Vertigo- Climb up a 30-ft vertical rock wall & feel the rush as you reach the peak starting from the deck of the 40th floor.

4. Cliffhanger- Climb an angled wall assisted by pulley system. Have your photo taken with a full view of the city below you.

5. High point- climb the 80-foot pole, highest point of the adventure and experience the ultimate high

SSC-Cebu can once again visit and perhaps conduct an ocular inspection of these on-going construction here at Fuente Towers.

Cebu fashion council eyes export market
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated September 24, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines – The Fashion Council of Cebu (FCC) will start exploring the huge export market, a consumer-base that is seen to boost the fashion designing industry in Cebu.

FCC president Philip Rodriguez said that although at present Cebuano fashion designers are still largely making designs for the local market, they are also at the same time tapping tourists as consumers, specifically the sophisticated Russian tourists.

Through the participation of FCC members to the 2nd Philippine Russian Business Forum and Exhibition (PRBFEX) to be held this October 21-24, Rodriguez hopes that fashion designers in Cebu could jumpstart its export market potential.

"This is an unexplored territory for us," Rodriguez said although some designers have already gotten order for "custom-made" designers from tourists, including Russian ladies.

Cebu's niche in design skills, has not only limit to the furniture, fashion accessories, and others, but now the fashion designers have slowly gaining popularity in the international market, specifically that a Cebuana fashion designer Monique Lhuillier has successful made her name in the elusive Hollywood market.

While Cebu's extraordinary niche in design has also gained a good reputation in the world especially in fashion accessories and furniture. This time, the fashion designers in Cebu are starting to explore the world market.

Bid pushed to preserve streets with old houses
By Fe Marie D. Dumaboc, Reporter

The Cebu City government is considering preserving some parts of the uptown area and call it “Old Cebu.”

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said yesterday he was studying the proposal of businessman Efrain Pelaez to preserve parts of Ranudo Street in barangays Sta. Cruz and San Jose and Sepulveda Street in barangay Zapatera where old houses and the Casino Español were located.

Rama said Pelaez offered to help the city government preserve the area during his visit to the Mayor’s Office last Tuesday.

“There are countless of old houses, which if preserved would be like an old pueblo. It is an exciting concept that will bring the likeness of Vigan — where you only have to walk then you can see the old houses,” Rama said.

Rama said he wanted first to have Pelaez’s concepts in writing before he would agree to it.

He, however, said he was considering the concept because it was in line with the city government's thrust to preserve heritage.

He also considered the ancestral houses in the area which include those owned by the families of Garcia, Golez, Pelaez, Borromeo, Sembrano and others.

Rama said that if the proposal would be realized, the city government would put more lights in the area to emphasize the old houses.

If the area would be enhanced, it could become a tourist spot or a walking area where anyone could reminisce the history of the area, and might be called an “Old Cebu,” Rama said.

In my calculation morag before the year end.. only two projects are expected..

Norkis plans IT park project in Mandaue (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=615129&publicationSubCategoryId=108)
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated September 25, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines – The Norkis Group of Companies is going to convert its three-hectare property in Mandaue City into an Information Technology (IT) Park, in the next two to three years.

Norkis Group chairman Dr. Norberto B. Quisumbing Jr., announced that the company's master plan to venture into the promising BPO-real estate development is now on the drawing board.

According to Quisumbing, the company is open for joint-venture deals with interested BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) companies for the establishment of buildings or it may be done through lease-contract agreement with Norkis.

As the company's headquarters and plant will be moved to its 100-hectare property in Compostela, north of Cebu, Quisumbing said Norkis is also taking advantage of the promising BPO market, which is also considered as the largest employer in the country today.

To be called Norkis IT Park, the initial plan is to build eight high-rise buildings suited for the BPO clients, as well as the establishment of an Academy for ESL (English as Second Language) in partnership with a big university in Cebu.

Once completed, the father of the Norkis Group said that the Park can easily employ more or less 20, 000 to 30,000 people.

BPO, he said is a good employment generator for the country in this generation, and in line with this thrust to provide more employment to Cebuanos, keeping them from working abroad, Quisumbing said establishment of an IT Park in Mandaue is one of the solutions to unemployment.

He admitted that the Norkis group like other companies is losing good people to high paying BPO companies. Although, the company will continue to expand its core business in manufacturing, marketing, financing, agri-business, export, and real estate, entering into BPO market is not only good for the Group's growth, but also to the Cebu constituents.

"The reality is-BPO is here to stay," Quisumbing said in an interview Thursday.

Aside from the eight high-rise buildings that will be designed for the BPO company locators, and the ESL academy, the company also plans to put up residential condominiums for the employees working within the park.

Adjacent to Norkis' three-hectare property in Mandaue City, is the ongoing construction of a leisure and shopping destination being developed by exporter Justin Uy. The Norkis IT Park will complement with Uy's development, he said specifically that part of Uy's plan is also to establish a five-star hotel within the area.

Quisumbing lauded the efforts of the present Mandaue City administration led by Mayor Jonas Cortes in providing an investor-friendly environment, which further encouraged more capitalists to invest in the City.

Although, he said good urban-planning for zoning in Mandaue should be implemented, in order to attract local and foreign investors.

Norkis, one of the country's transportation and retail financing giants operate more than 300 retail financing branches around the Philippines and is employing over 6,000 people, of which mostly are Cebuanos. (FREEMAN)

Norkis plans IT park project in Mandaue (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=615129&publicationSubCategoryId=108)

^^I have already previously posted about this on the rumor thread and its now getting official. The Norkis was supposed to be the target of an SM Mandaue site but Mr. Quisumbing had plans for the property...

Way to go Mr. Quisumbing.. with so many BPO now in Mandaue, infront of our community.. I guess from now on i will carefully consider, making our house a highrise (lol) to accommodate alot of renters who will surely want to stay just near the work place..:banana:

hahaha.. sorry po.. i stand corrected...

By the way before the end of this year, we will be soon retiring 3 construction project threads since this will be good as finished na, like Elizabeth Hotel, Radisson Blue and the Harrolds Hotel...... or naa pa ba lain?

In my calculation morag before the year end.. only two projects are expected..

Alveo Cebu - 30 plus?
Citiloft Urgello- 18 storey 2 towers.

I hope betro's assessment is true.. he sees three more towers to be launched before the end of this year...

Mandaue eyed as new site of international port (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=615779&publicationSubCategoryId=107)

Updated September 27, 2010

CEBU, Philippines – The Cebu Port Authority is considering Mandaue City as a possible relocation site for the Cebu International Port.

CPA General Manager Vicente Suazo told The FREEMAN Mandaue City is an ideal site because its area can very well accommodate an international port. He said the new site should be about 50 hectares.

"Wala pay final kay nangita pami og other alternative sites para mapilian, which could be the most ideal. Mandaue will be one among the several sites nga pili-an," Suazo said.

The final decision, he said, will be made by the CPA board chaired by the secretary of the Department of Transportation and Communications.

The CIP needs a depth of 150 meters to accommodate huge vessels. At present, it only has a depth of 35 meters and could no longer be expanded as doing so would reportedly constrict the harbor.

Suazo said expanding the port would usher faster trade facilitation, which, in turn, would improve local economy
and provide more employment opportunities.

Suazo also proposed that after the CIP would be relocated, the existing site should be converted into a commercial and business area to complement the development of the South Road Properties nearby.

The powers and functions of the CPA in administering the Port of Cebu is vested in and exercised by the Cebu Port Commission, which is composed of seven members. (FREEMAN)

mandaue is starting to get congested like cebu city which can be another problem 5 to 10 years from now. why not split the cebu international port into two or three like put one somewhere in naga or san fernando and another in consolacion and liloan and probably one on the western side of cebu probably toledo, balamban or pinamungahan. in that way, it will help boost the income and create jobs of these towns who are likely candidate of making into a city. as to the other side of cebu, it will develop and increase the maritime traffic in the cebu negros waters.

I myself don't agree on having the International Port anywhere from Amara down to SRP. I can imagine the eyesore, the stench, the traffic that could develop in the area in the next few years if it materializes. If i had a choice they should plan and design it somewhere further south of SRP. Any area from Amara to SRP serves as the gateway to Cebu and these areas should be kept clean and inviting to visitors and investors.

Minglanilla or Naga in the south could be a good site the new CIP coz it's not far away from Manufacturers/Exporters that needs to ship their merchandise. Or Compostela or Danao in the North, MITSUMI would be surely be happy if this will be materialized. I hope that they will opt to move the new CIP in of these locations coz I don't like seeing cargo vans and vessels at the metro Cebu harbor.
