Kanindot kung mahawan nang CIP no? Unya ang magpabilin nga pier diha kay para sa ferry boat ug fast craft na lang ug mga passenger ship.

Disadvantage lang gamay sa MEPZA locators kung ipalayo ang CIP.

mandaue is starting to get congested like cebu city which can be another problem 5 to 10 years from now. why not split the cebu international port into two or three like put one somewhere in naga or san fernando and another in consolacion and liloan and probably one on the western side of cebu probably toledo, balamban or pinamungahan. in that way, it will help boost the income and create jobs of these towns who are likely candidate of making into a city. as to the other side of cebu, it will develop and increase the maritime traffic in the cebu negros waters.

i think morag naa na study gihimo ani..
ila gi consider ang berthing space ug ang depth sa dagat kung mo qualify ba sa standards... morag diha man sa Liloan and Mandaue North and ni qualify.

Robinsons to build third Cebu mall, eyes more budget hotels (http://www.bworldonline.com/main/content.php?id=18420)
Business World Online
26 September 2010

CEBU CITY -- Gokongwei-led Robinsons Land Corp. will start construction of a new mall in Cebu in February next year.

The planned shopping mall, which will have a gross leasable area of 27,000 square meters, will be part of a mixed-use complex to be called Robinsons Cebu Maxilom. The mall is expected to open in the third quarter of 2012.

Lourdes T. Alano, vice-president for lease, said the mall will rise on a 4.6-hectare property acquired by Robinsons Land from the Cebu city government two years ago. A master plan for the property on Gen. Maxilom Avenue in the Cebu north reclamation area, is being drawn up and will be completed before the end of the year.

Provisions are also being made for a hotel, a museum containing the Gokongwei family’s memorabilia, and residential towers. It will be Robinsons’ first mixed-use complex in Cebu.

The company owns and operates Robinsons Place Cebu, a four-level mall with more than 50 stores, and Robinsons Cybergate Cebu, a mixed-use seven-storey building registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) for business process outsourcing office spaces and medical tourism facilities in Cebu. Cybergate also hosts specialty shops, banks and restaurants.

“We will be offering something different at the Maxilom. It will have garden and al fresco developments,” Ms. Alano said.

The new Cebu mall is part of Robinsons Land’s aggressive expansion nationwide.

The firm is looking for a property to be developed into a budget hotel in Cebu while a massive renovation of the lobby and 212 guestrooms of Cebu Midtown Plaza is being undertaken, Ms. Alano said. Cebu Midtown, located in the same building as Robinsons Place Cebu, will be rebranded as Summit Circle.

^^ so, that debunks the rumor about their Fuente property to be demolished for hi-rise towers...Cebu Midtown Hotel will be re-branded as SUMMIT CIRCLE...and the mall will still continue to operate...i think that construction going on in front of the mall is just part of the renovation...

Mandaue eyed as new site of international port (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=615779&publicationSubCategoryId=107)

CEBU, Philippines – The Cebu Port Authority is considering Mandaue City as a possible relocation site for the Cebu International Port.

CPA General Manager Vicente Suazo told The FREEMAN Mandaue City is an ideal site because its area can very well accommodate an international port. He said the new site should be about 50 hectares.

"Wala pay final kay nangita pami og other alternative sites para mapilian, which could be the most ideal. Mandaue will be one among the several sites nga pili-an," Suazo said.

The final decision, he said, will be made by the CPA board chaired by the secretary of the Department of Transportation and Communications.

The CIP needs a depth of 150 meters to accommodate huge vessels. At present, it only has a depth of 35 meters and could no longer be expanded as doing so would reportedly constrict the harbor.

Suazo said expanding the port would usher faster trade facilitation, which, in turn, would improve local economy
and provide more employment opportunities.

Suazo also proposed that after the CIP would be relocated, the existing site should be converted into a commercial and business area to complement the development of the South Road Properties nearby.

The powers and functions of the CPA in administering the Port of Cebu is vested in and exercised by the Cebu Port Commission, which is composed of seven members. (FREEMAN)

definitely good news! about the transfer of CIP, mas ganahan ko sa mandaue lang para sheltered gihapon ang port. matabunan sa mactan. or pwede pud ibalhin lang sa mactan pero facing the mainland of course. :okay:

... at laaaaaaaaaaaaaaassst, gisugdan na jud ug rehabilitate ang karsada padung SM from new White Gold!

uyy, good news again! thanks sa info bro! :okay:

UP Cebu secures autonomy (http://cdn.ph/news_details.php?id=7364)
Cebu Daily News 9/28/2010
By Candeze R. Mongaya, Reporter

THE University of the Philippines Cebu College was finally granted autonomy from supervision of Iloilo following approval by the UP Board of Regents (BOR) in their meeting last Sept. 24.

“This is freedom and flexibility for the operation of the college,” Dean Enrique Avila told .

He said implementing rules and procedures are being crafted by the office of UP president Erlinda Roman and will be finished within this week.

The college's autonomy will take effect following a signed order from the UP president and issuance of rules and regulations.

This will be in force before the end of the year.

Avila said the college will enjoy financial independence, faculty growth and hold its own student records. However, it will receive the same budget.

The college will now be directly supervised by the office of the president in Diliman.

With the change, Avila said they will focus on improving academic programs and faculty.

UP Cebu College was previously under the supervision of UP Visayas in Iloilo along with the College of Management, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Fisheries and Oceans, School of Technologies and UP Tacloban.

Robinsons Builds Strong Presence in Cebu with New Malls, Hotel, and BPO Offices (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/279336/robinsons-builds-strong-presence-cebu-with-new-malls-hotel-and-bpo-offices)
Manila Bulletin
September 27, 2010, 7:44pm

MANILA, Philippines – Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) is establishing a new dimension towards mall culture south of the country, and has launched and made plans on new structures that are set to offer diverse choices in both lifestyle and tourism particularly in the Queen City of the South, Cebu.

With old malls and new ones that are continuously being developed, RLC is hoping to establish its niche on the business and lifestyle industry, in the province proclaimed by the Department of Tourism as the Philippines’ top tourist destination.

Cebu has a special place in the heart of RLC’s history as its Chairman Emeritus, John Gokongwei was actually born in the province. Cebu is also known as the setting of the company’s first retail ventures, with a department store and grocery outlet opening in the mid 1980’s, and considered one of the first urban establishments to flourish in the Fuente Circle.

The grocery and department store was turned into a full service mall in year 2000 as a three-story building offering retail and gastronomic choices. RLC further established its mixed-use concept in architecture by connecting it directly to the Cebu Midtown Hotel, another RLC property catering to traveling businessmen and convention members.

Both Robinsons Place Cebu and Cebu Midtown will soon undergo major facelifts this year to provide a more modern and dynamic venue to the province’ impressive tourist growth.

Robinsons Place will be sporting an eye-catching façade of glass walls plus a giant projector screen to announce weekend sales and events. The mall is strategically located within three major thoroughfares: Fuente Osmena Avenue, General Maxilom Avenue, and F. Ramos Street. The mall has over 90 brands within its complex, plus Robinsons Malls’ anchor brands such as the department store, the supermarket, Do-It-Best Handyman, Robinsons Appliances and the food court.

Cebu Midtown, on the other hand, will be rebranded as Summit Circle, which is part of RLC’s current rebranding undertaking.

The new hotel will feature a new lobby that will be defined by a minimalist, Asian-contemporary design. All 212 guestrooms will also be fitted to provide modern amenities for tourists on-the-go.

A few blocks away from Robinsons Place is the new Robinsons Cybergate Mall. This project is considered the first establishment in Cebu that offers a unique tenant mix that will cater to the province’s new direction in tourism – medical tourism.

Robinsons Cybergate is defined by a distinct combination of culinary, wellness, medical and BPO spaces, and was constructed with green architecture in mind.

The dining outlet for example, has a glass atrium which provides natural light to the whole space. The ceiling is also draped with tasteful trimmings to regulate temperature.

The first two floors of the building is allotted as dining and retail space, with local restaurants such as Moon Café as one of its more famous outlets. The second floor where the food court is located is usually full since the mall is located near major offices and hospitals.

The third floor on the other hand, is labeled the wellness floors – wherein a variety of salons and boutiques such as parlors and spas have set up office. The wellness centers usually occupy considerable space for its services. The quirky Coco Salon, a Korean-owned beauty space for example, has a wide 110 sqm space, and can accommodate more than 20 customers at a time.

The fourth and fifth floors are reserved for medical clinics – medical establishments that offer consultation and simple diagnostic procedures.

“Cebu has been very aggressive when it comes to medical tourism and Robinsons Land is just responding according to the demand. There’s a call for medical clinics and offices, and our location is considered very strategic as we are right across Chong Hwa Hospital, known to cater to foreigners who are in Cebu looking for special medical services,” said Hermosilla Irizari, RLC's group property manager for Cebu.

To better promote the medical floors, RLC has provided model units with a clinic layout which guests can consider. RLC takes care of the construction and preparation of the clinics. Space sizes start from 35 sqm and above. The last two floors are provided for BPO companies.

“In Cebu, there are about 35 BPO companies now operating and are looking for places to expand. These companies usually have strict specifications when it comes to leasing places. Some of their considerations are temperature, 24-hour service providers, security and accessibility of office. Robinsons Cybergate provides all that and more,” said Lourdes Alano, RLC VP for Lease.

Robinsons Cybergate has a leasable area of 12,000 sqm, and went fully operational in December of 2009.

In the last quarter of 2012, RLC is expected to launch another major project – Robinsons Cebu Maxilom, a 27,000 sqm retail area that’s expected to be one of the key lifestyle hubs in the province.

The project will be located at the General Maxilom Avenue, North Reclamation Area, in Cebu City and will offer a mixed-use establishment that will feature a mall, a museum, al fresco dining spots, landscaped gardens and a new hotel.

The center will be located near the port area, major office buildings and jump-off points to other Cebu destinations. Future plans will also include spaces for residential buildings.

UP Cebu College was previously under the supervision of UP Visayas in Iloilo along with the College of Management, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Fisheries and Oceans, School of Technologies and UP Tacloban.

finally up cebu is now its own separate university. thats good news para maka expand na sila in terms of courses offered. besides it will have another campus at srp.

SM, Carlson group may open another Radisson Blu in Cebu

CEBU CITY -- Another Radisson hotel may rise in Cebu as top executives of both SM Hotels and Conventions Group and Carlson Hotels-Asia Pacific vowed to explore more opportunities for a long-term partnership.

Asked if the planned hotel at the 30-hectare mixed-use complex that SM Prime Holdings, Inc. plans to develop at the South Road Properties will be another Radisson Hotel, SM Hotels President Elizabeth T. Sy said, “we hope so.”

Xerxes Meher-Homji, executive vice-president and chief development officer of Carlson Hotels-Asia Pacific, added, “we hope so, too.”

SM Prime President Hans T. Sy also did not discount a possible partnership with Carlson for the planned hotel at the South Road Properties, a 300-hectare “greenfield” development that was reclaimed by the Cebu city government.

Mr. Sy, in a separate interview, said he would unveil in November the details of the master development plan for the 30-hectare property at the South Road Properties.

Initially, the plan includes the construction of a mall that will be bigger than the existing SM City Cebu. Provisions have also been made for a hotel.

SM and Carlson executives yesterday led the soft opening of Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu, the first high-end Radisson hotel in Asia-Pacific region.

SM Hotels, a wholly owned subsidiary of SM Investments Corp., will also break ground “very soon” for a second Radisson Blu hotel at the SM Mall of Asia complex, Ms. Sy said.

The opening in Cebu of the first Radisson Blu hotel in Asia-Pacific region shows SM’s and Carlson’s confidence in Cebu, Ms. Sy added.

Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu general manager Grant Gaskin said he was optimistic the hotel would be as competitive as other upscale hotels in Cebu by February next year.

All 400 rooms will be available in a couple of weeks and the hotel has started to receive room reservations, Mr. Gaskin said.

“It’s starting slowly. It’s very promising. Everybody’s been wanting to touch, see, feel and look at Radisson. It feels different than other hotels in Cebu,” Mr. Gaskin added.

Jean-Marc Buscato, Carlson Hotels-Asia Pacific managing director, said the firm wanted to bring to Asia the success of the Radisson brand in Europe.

Carlson plans to convert 65% to 70% of the 31 other Radisson hotels across Asia Pacific to the Blu brand, or the so-called upper-upscale tier of Carlson hotels.

“We are giving the owners (of the hotels) the opportunity to upgrade to Blu. If not, we’ll keep them in the green tier,” Mr. Buscato said.

Messrs. Buscato and Gaskin were confident of sustainable operations at the hotel.

“People are looking for quality products in the Philippines. Upscale hotels have done very well. We believe there’s a good sustainable market for us,” Mr. Gaskin said.

Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu, located next to SM City Cebu, is aiming for the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) market.

“We now have an opportunity in Cebu to host international conferences in an upscale hotel,” Mr. Gaskin said. -- Marites S. Villamor

MetroPac unit eyeing tollway projects in Visayas, Mindanao

METRO PACIFIC Tollways Corp., the infrastructure arm of Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Investments Corp., is set to begin studies for toll roads in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The listed company wants to expand operations outside Luzon, where it manages the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) and the Subic-Clark-Tarlac expressway.

“There should be some roads that we can already study,” Metro Pacific Tollways President Ramoncito S. Fernandez said in an interview, pointing to Cebu.

“But we are still in raw scanning because the government said what they want in Cebu is a mass transit system,” Mr. Fernandez said.

The tollway firm wants to enter projects through private-public partnerships or PPPs, the administration’s centerpiece economic program.

The administration’s PPP list contains 80 projects estimated to cost nearly P740 billion. This includes Metro Pacific Tollway’s proposals to build a road connecting the North and South Luzon tollways and a “city terminal” for the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport at the Clark free port in Pampanga.

Early this month, Cebu business leaders bared a “wish list” of P4.4 billion worth of infrastructure projects, including the expansion of Mactan International Airport, the country’s second busiest airport; a mass transit system; the Panglao International Airport in Bohol; and the construction of the Cebu-Bohol bridge.

Mr. Fernandez said his company preferred contiguous areas for its initial infrastructure ventures in central and south Philippines.

The company can also build “bridge tollways” that will connect islands in the Visayas and Mindanao.

“We can also do a bridge because our connector road [will use] elevated bridge technology,” Mr. Fernandez said, adding that the company only needed to fine-tune the process for new toll roads in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The Philippines only has 300 kilometers of toll roads, which pales in comparison with about 1,500 kilometers each in Malaysia and Thailand, Metro Pacific Tollways data showed.

Metro Pacific Tollways plans to spend P25 billion for three big-ticket projects in the next five years. These projects are:
• NLEx Segment 9, a four-lane, 2.42-kilometer stretch that will connect the NLEx to MacArthur Highway in Valenzuela City;
• Segment 10, a two-lane, 5.65-kilometer elevated road from MacArthur Highway to Radial Road R-10; and
• the 13.2-kilometer connector road that will link NLEx to the Metro Manila Skyway along South Luzon Expressway in Makati.

Sought for comment, Juan Carlos D. Garcia, investment analyst at 2Trade Asia, said: “Metro Pacific Investments’ resources are good and with additional funding from other venues like the debt market and stock market, I think they can still push through with their projects.”

But a partnership with the government will facilitate new projects with incentives such as tax perks, Mr. Garcia said.

Shares in Metro Pacific Tollways -- whose core net income rose to P753 million in the first half from P636 million in the previous year -- rallied by 21.42% or P1.50 to close at P8.50 each yesterday.

Metro Pacific is the Philippine unit of Hong Kong’s First Pacific Co. Ltd., which partly owns the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT).

Mediaquest Holdings, Inc., a unit of the Beneficial Trust Fund of PLDT, has a minority stake in BusinessWorld. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

SM Prime sets P20-B devt for Cebu property

Written by Wilfredo Rodolfo III / Reporter
Tuesday, 28 September 2010 12:48

SM Prime Holdings will unveil in November its P20-billion development masterplan for its 20-hectare sector within the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City.

Company president Hans Sy said the company is currently working on details of the mixed-use development which will be centered around an SM mall which should be one of the group’s biggest. The project will immediately break ground for the first buildings, including the mall.

The mall operator’s plans come at the heels of the P25-billion development unveiled by Filinvest Land Inc. near the area. Filinvest recently broke ground for its 42-hectare Citta de Mare residential and commercial development, just beside the SM property.

“We are very excited to show to the public our plans and how big the whole thing is,” Sy said.

The SM Hotels and Conventions Corp. recently opened Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu, the first entry of the US-based Carlson hotels group in the country and the first higher upper-scale Blu branded hotel of the chain in the Asia-Pacific region.

Sy said there are plans for another upscale hotel within the SRP but he would not commit that it will still be with Carlson.

SM purchased the 30-hectare section of the 240-hectare SRP at P3.027 billion.

Sy said construction work of the 250,000-square meter mall should start first followed by several medium-rise buildings. He earlier said they are planning to build a high-rise condominium and at least two hotel towers.

Completed in 2001, the SRP has been built through a loan obtained by the city government with the Japan Bank of International Cooperation. The loan amortizations run up to 2020.

i agree it will be good for UP to offer other various courses. but the MBA program
should still be the centerpiece. it is precisely because of the MBA program that
the city donated land to them, without it, the city will withdraw the donation.

First, they desecrate the Basilica by taking pictures just about anywhere (even inside the little chapel where the Image is) as they snicker loudly at the 'strangeness' of our ways. And now this?

up cebu should offer courses not commonly offered in cebu colleges and universities . . . . so, this MBA program for UP-Cebu will be good as cash na diay, kay obligado man gud sila mobutang og MBA...Wise gud ni si ex-Mayor Tomas da. Karon nga buwag na ang UP-Cebu, siguradong mobongga ni og maayo, especially nga naa umaabot nga UP-Cebu SRP.

i think UP will try to offer as many possible courses as possible ... for as long as
it's standard of excellence is not compromised. UP is known to prioritize quality
over quantity and many of its units specialize on certain disciplines. that was
the difficulty before - UP-Cebu was actually UPVCC, or UP in the Visayas - Cebu
College, and its mother unit was UP in the Visayas, located in Miag-ao, Ilo-ilo.
UPV's thrust, and major disciplines are along the line of Agriculture and Fisheries
but UP-Cebu is located in a major urban center which economy is 76% services,
and which major job demands were along the lines of commerce, trade, and
management. this is one strong justification when UP-Cebu requested for
autonomous status - we always said, "we can't offer agriculture or fisheries
courses here - this is Cebu City!, nobody will enrol." and Management has
always been the strength of UP-Cebu ... only that ... it can't offer MBA because
UP-Diliman refused to allow any other unit to offer MBA. so if you notice, what
was offered in UP-Cebu before was Masters in Management (MM), not MBA.

Tomas mind skipped 10 years ahead ... and he saw an SRP which maybe the
hub of international business and possibly (hopefully), regional headquarters
of multinational corporations, similar to those who chose to locate in singapore
and hongkong. and he thought what a better way to entice them more than
to offer availability of MBA graduates of international caliber. so he offered
land to UP with the condition that they offer MBA ... took a long time cause
the College of Business Administration in UP-Diliman dugay kaayo ni sugot ...
finally they gave in and the land was donated (under a MOA).

by the way, if you look at the rendering of the UP campus at the SRP which
was posted a few months back, notice something interesting ... beside the
buildings for the business administration school, UP at the SRP will also host
an IT center and will specialize in IT-related courses. the university saw the
potential of cebu in this field most especially with the fast-growing outsourcing
industry so they will also make the SRP at the SRP as an IT center. ako, i'm
just hoping - it will become an international hub ... diliman is pretty much
congested already ...

I myself don't agree on having the International Port anywhere from Amara down to SRP. I can imagine the eyesore, the stench, the traffic that could develop in the area in the next few years if it materializes. If i had a choice they should plan and design it somewhere further south of SRP. Any area from Amara to SRP serves as the gateway to Cebu and these areas should be kept clean and inviting to visitors and investors.

Correct. Anyway I think Naga is a perfect site for a new international port in the future. It's an industrial city/town. We have the biggest power plant in Cebu there, the biggest industrial park (the one where SEAGATE used to be located), etc. The government can start reclaiming from the Balili property and then onwards.

Below is a photo of an international cargo port currently under construction in China. When completed, it will be the biggest in the world. If I'm not mistaken, the longest side of the port will be 5 kilometers long. This was featured in National Geographic.

it seems like the cebuanos are in for another word war from this sunstar article about city mayor rama's statement:

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, together with the deans of the different law schools in the city, denounced the accusations against Lazaga.

The City Government, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines Cebu City chapter and the law schools, including USJ-R, among others, will submit a joint affidavit to the Supreme Court requesting for the conduct of the Bar exam outside Manila.

The City and the schools want the High Court to bring the exams to Cebu City to make them more affordable and safe.

In a news conference yesterday, Rama asked the Philippine National Police to broaden its investigation on the incident, which injured over 40 law students.

“I am not convinced that it was perpetuated by a frat. That needs a deeper investigation,” he said.

“The accusation (against Lazaga) is an accusation against Cebu. I will never allow that,” he said.

I feel like Koreans are like that everywhere.

On the guestbook of the Grotto Church here in Portland, a group of Koreans wrote on it and their message was pretty rude.

Anyway, Filipinos have done far worst to their own country (like illegal logging) so you really shouldn't be surprised or else you'll come off racist.

Furniture firm ventures into boutique hotel biz
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman)
Updated September 23, 2010

CEBU, Philippines – The rosy tourism prospects in Cebu prompted furniture and real estate company Coast Pacific Manufacturing Corporation (CPMC) to spend P40 million in establishing a chic boutique hotel called "Goldberry Suites".

Located in Lapu-Lapu City, CPMC chief financial officer (CFO) Justine Andrew C. Lo said the company sees the opportunity to enter the dynamic tourism sector, while Cebu has already proved its worth in terms of attracting local and foreign tourists, with or without crisis.

The company acquired the former Cesar's Palace in Lapu-Lapu City and converted the six-story building into a boutique hotel, to provide a wide range of accommodation choices on Mactan Island, which is considered as Cebu Province's premier tourism destination.

CPMC, a company which has been successful in the furniture making for export, real estate business, warehousing, stone-tiles manufacturing, is confident that its expertise in these businesses could also complement with its entry in the accommodation service business.

The 45-room hotel, with its modern-contemporary interior design, is expected to attract the sophisticated yet budget-conscious travelers from all over the country, including foreign visitors.

"We made it sure that the facilities are internationally-at-par. We even have the same facilities offered by well-known hotels here. But, we will make our rates more affordable and pocket-friendly," Lo said in a press conference held recently.

Set to be commercially opened by end of October this year, Goldberry Suites will be pegging its room rate at the range of P1,800 (overnight) to as high as P5,500 for the penthouse accommodation.

Lo said the company has responded to the economic opportunities offered particularly in Cebu, and the best way to grab it is through investment in tourism.

In fact, he said the company is planning to open up a resort somewhere in Maribago also in Lapu-Lapu in the future.

CPMC also owns a beachfront property in Maribago, being prepared for the right opportunity to invest in another accommodation facility, while multinational firms and giant developers in the country are now outsmarting each other to establish resort facilities along the Mactan Island beachfront.

Recently, the president of the First Metro Investment Corporation, a large conglomerate which is part of the MetroBank Group, Francis Sebastian told Cebuanos to take advantage of the ripe opportunity in direct investments Cebu is offering, otherwise outside capitalists will be able to enjoy the "abundance" of Cebu.

"Cebu is open for business. Partake in this opportunity," he encouraged Cebuano capitalists emphasizing that if Cebuanos will not take advantage of the fertile investment soil here, others will surely grab it.

He said Cebu has captured the international investment community's interest thus it can claim to be the premier "investment destination in the Philippines." (FREEMAN)

THIS IS ANOTHER CEBU BASED BUSINESS EXPLORING THE REAL ESTATE AND TOURISM INDUSTRY... !!!!!!!

City Hall to work on making Cebu IT, economic hub

By Princess Dawn Felicitas

Thursday, September 30, 2010

THE Cebu City Government will be working to make the city an economic hub in the country in the next three years, an official said.

During yesterday’s executive and legislative agenda validation with stakeholders, City Treasurer Ofelia Oliva said they want the city to have a sustainable economy and be an IT hub and manufacturing haven by 2013.

Oliva, who heads the economic governance group of City Hall, said they will be updating the city’s tax code as one of the strategies to achieve that target.

Oliva said they will also revise the economic enterprise operations code to make the city market more responsive to the needs of the public.

Stakeholders also seek the revision of the real property tax code as well as the conduct of tax mapping and re-validation of real properties.

Oliva said they also plan to install IT programs and wireless technology in the city, establish tax satellite centers and educate people on taxation.

Oliva said they also plan to create a revenue multi-sectoral administration council and push for the enactment of an ordinance against red tape. She, however, stressed that the accounting requirements for the ordinance should match the requirements of the Commission on Audit (COA).

Oliva said they plan to provide tax incentives for manufacturing businesses, provide assistance to farmers, provide loans, establish a central trading area or “bagsakan,” create an auction market, organize a trade fair exhibit showcasing products of the city and enhance jobs fair in the barangays to achieve targets.

The City also plans to establish a 24 hours a day 7 days a week garbage collection.

Making the city’s streets cleaner is one of Mayor Michael Rama’s priority projects in his first 100 days in office.
Yesterday, other priorities crafted by the City Government during its legislative and executive agenda last July in Costabella Resort in Lapu-Lapu City were presented to the private sector for validation.

Published in the Sun.Star Cebu newspaper on October 01, 2010.

Guv scores proposed
ordinance on ‘chicharon’

CEBU City – Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia considers the proposed ordinance requiring chicharon (pork cracklings) makers to place health warnings on their packaging as “illogical and discriminatory to the industry of Carcar,” a city in Cebu known for the delicacy.

Garcia said chicharon is one of the products that Cebu can be proud of.

She compared chicharon to burgers in fast food chains that contain more fat.

“If we talk about being concerned about the people’s health, why single out chicharon? We should also include hamburgers — they are swimming in fat,” said Garcia.

The governor said the very nature of processing chicharon is taking away fat.

She said she does not know what medical data Provincial Board member Arleigh Jay Sitoy used to back his proposal.

She said Sitoy might as well discriminate humba (pork belly stew) or lechon (roasted pig) for their fatty content.

Sitoy’s proposal cites Republic Act 7394, known as the Consumer Protection Act.

The law includes the right to obtain accurate health-related education and information on the nature, quality and quantity of the contents of consumer products, especially food items.

It discussed how some food products in the markets do not reflect their nutritional content, including the chicharon.

It described chicharon as fat-laden and high in cholesterol, which can cause heart diseases and cancer if taken in excessive amounts.

Under the proposal, a violator will be fined P5,000 or imprisoned for not more than a year, or both. (PNA)

Seeing black smoke and fire-out in minutes, probably an electrical fault which cleared quickly! Is this right beside the small walkway from the road near Insular Life building access to Ayala Mall? There's a transformer vault at the side which seems upended a bit in the area! Could be, but I maybe wrong!

Cebu: An education hub

by Mila C. Espina

The 2010 Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines recently held its national assembly in Cebu from Sept. 22 to 24. Some 2,700 delegates from all over the country converged at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel to discuss concerns in environment and education synthesized in a meaningful theme, A Heart for Eden, A Hand at Ecology! An added feature of the assemblage, a ‘first in the history of CEAP,’ was the involvement of some 37 delegates from the International Office of Catholic Education, with delegates from Asia, Africa, Europe, Middle East and America led by secretary-general Fr. Angel Astorgano and Fr. Rod Salazar, International Office of Catholic Education Asia-Pacific regional secretary. The delegates were honored in a welcome dinner by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia. Board Member and tourism and international relations chair Agnes Magpale delivered the welcome remarks.

In the luncheon presscon, DepEd Secretary, Honorable Brother Armin Luistro, underscored the long-term program of expanding the basic or general education in the grade levels and aligning high school curricula with specialized college courses.

Kudos went to Region 7 director, Fr. Enrico Silab, president of the University of San Jose-Recoletos and the 2010 CEAP convention coordinator for the over-all success of one of the biggest religious events in Cebu.

More events in Cebu—The nuptial rites and reception of Aldwin, son of Antonio Co and Jovita Billan; and Barbi, daughter of Carlos and Susana Co.; the opening night of Cine Europa 13; the first year anniversary of The Imperial Palace and the Laguna Garden; and the birthday bash of Lydia Sia of the Wecare Foundation. Then, Avida Towers Cebu will launch its second tower on Oct.1.

if pnoy is cutting the budget allocation for up and other state run universities, how can up cebu srp campus be built within 3 years as set by moa? up cebu lahug campus has its own proposed master development plan. dili mahimo nga i close ang lahug campus in lieu of srp kay thats only 5 hectares. sa minimum land area requirement for a university status dili na mo qualify ang up srp.

UP may have this reason for most of its projects:
"Will get funds from what we earn with UP-Ayala Technohub in Diliman."

And since the new UP charter has allowed to partner with private companies for income-generating activities using UP's idle assets, then most likely the national government is starting to gradually lose its grip towards UP and perhaps other SCUs.

That may have justified their 300% increase in tuition fee almost two years ago. ;)

repost from CamSur thread:

Air Philippines slates inaugural Cebu-Naga-Cebu flight Oct. 21

PILI, Camarines Sur – Arrangements have been finalized and all kinks ironed out, Air Philippines will start its Cebu-Naga Cebu route flights starting Tuesday, October 21 [sic, actually, Friday, Oct 22].

This was announced by Gov. LRay Villafuerte in a recent interview in the wake of the highly successful staging of the Summit Water CamSur Marathon 2010 that all but confirmed and highlighted the hefty share the province is contributing to national tourism development and the need to fortify travel access to the province.

CamSur is currently the most visited destination as the country’s leading tourism destination in terms of foreign and domestic arrivals largely resulting from its innovative tourism program founded on eco-tourism and extreme sports and is all the more expected to sustain its leadership in this field by the Department of Tourism (DoT).

Immediate feedback after the spectacular staging of the recent marathon indicate that participation in its sequel next year could very easily be double number of runners this year that came to twenty thousand runners.

Air Philippines has reportedly made the necessary test flights, albeit with no passengers, and confirmed it will launch its inaugural flight on October 21 [sic, Oct 22] leaving Cebu at 10:00 o’clock A.M., arriving at Naga Airport at 11:00 o’clock, then taking off for the return flight at 11:20 o’clock AM and back at Cebu by 12:20 o’clock PM.

Flights are initially scheduled four times a week (Monday,Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) and would eventually be expanded to a daily schedule when the need arises. CamSur to Cebu is roughly equidistance with CamSur to Manila and would thus be similarly accessible to international flight connections.

Many other airlines have been negotiating to expand operations to CamSur, even proposing airbus flights to accommodate more travelers, but the constraining factor has consistently been the quality and size of the sole local airport, which Gov. Villafuerte has given priority concern ever since he conceptualized the comprehensive tourism development blueprint of CamSur.

One complicating factor is the province of Albay being equally keen on being the site of the proposed Southern Luzon International Airport which could readily use up national funds for air travel modernization and facility build-up in this sector.

This entry of Air Philippines’ Cebu-Naga-Cebu connection underscore the gigantic leap of the volume of travel to Camarines Sur. When there were only three flight per week a few years back before tourism activities in the province spiraled, there would now be total of eight flights per day landing at and taking off from CamSur, Gov. Villafuerte pointed out. GBClaveria/MMEC

which reminds me...
@sir Paul,
is Cebu City (the Cebu city fire department in particular) ready for hi-rise blazes?

i have no idea, now, but i can check ... most probably ... no.

all i know is that in 2001-2003, when i was city administrator, i knew that
our firetruck ladders had limited height and could not reach the highest floors
of the existing buildings then. i was negotiating for a donation from a japa-
nese city for taller ladders, used ones but very much serviceable, and more
importantly tall enough for us, but that was cut short when some members of
the city council complained i was always travelling to japan (abi kaha nila
kung madala ra ug email-email nang magnegotiate kag donation he he he ).

i am sure today, if the top floor of crown regency catches fire, it will be a
sight to behold .... yes - a sight to behold, kay kutob ra man ta tan-aw ...

Airphil Express flies in new Airbus A320, to get 17 more

BUDGET carrier Airphil Express launched on Wednesday the newest addition to its fleet, a 180-seater Airbus A320 that will cover Manila-Singapore-Manila routes.

The plane will mount its maiden flight to Singapore from Manila on Oct. 27.

Cesar M. Chiong, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of Air Philippines Corp., told reporters at the sidelines of the launching 17 more Airbus A320 will arrive in the next two-and-a-half years.

“Six out of the 18 aircraft are to be delivered by this year. We will have another six next year and another six for the first quarter of 2012. As of now, nine out of the 18 aircraft are already signed and committed. These nine aircraft are to be leased,” he said.

Airphil Express is a sister company of flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL).

Jaime J. Bautista, PAL president and board member of Airphil Express, told reporters at the sidelines of the launching that the total investment for the 18 aircraft was $250 million.

“The funding will be partly internal and partly from the capital market,” he said.

Mr. Chiong said the company still has no plans to expand its turboprop fleet.

“We’re now focusing on our Airbus A320 fleet. As of now, we have eight turboprops, a mix of Q300s and 70-seater Q400s,” he said.

He added: “We will mount another maiden flight to Singapore but from Cebu on Dec. 1. We are also looking at other routes such as Manila to Busan in South Korea and Hong Kong by March next year.”

The budget carrier is also eyeing domestic destinations such as Zamboanga, Legazpi in Albay, Tagbilaran, Baguio, Vigan in Ilocos Sur, and Marinduque.

“Our destinations with the highest load factors are Bacolod, Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, Cagayan de Oro and Davao,” he said. -- Aura Marie P. Dagcutan

thanks for the reply @sir paul!

If you have reviewed the film "Towering Inferno" over and over again, you might have deduced the line of thought why things happened that way! The design of the building has some flaws when it come to fire conflagration. Building codes have since updated and construction companies do know how high-rise buildings are to be protected from fire. Our Fire Code of the Philippines specifies: "Where the hazard is high as determined by the C/MFM having jurisdiction, both fire-resistant construction and automatic fire suppression system shall be provided." - if the designers and owners would comply.

Also, newly installed DILG Sec Robredo months ago just nullified the requirement for the building fire and life and safety assessment reports (FALAR) as part of the requirements for renewing permits saying "naay nangwarta diha!". It means, building administrators/owners can get their renewal even if the building has violations on fire hazards. Maayong laki gyud ni si Robredo uy!
Like @Zid said, we'll just be watching! Pait no?

Avida Cebu launch advanced by a year due to brisk sales

Written by Wilfredo Rodolfo III / Reporter
Thursday, 30 September 2010 14:06

CEBU CITY—Avida Towers Cebu is advancing the launch of its second condominium tower in the city by a year, following superb uptake numbers on its development at the Asiatown IT Park.

Ryan Ybañez, the associate manager for project development, said there are only 34 units left of the 518 total of Avida Towers Cebu Tower 1, which was launched in June.

“The market is really warming up after the financial crisis of 2009,” he said. With the new schedule, both Towers 1 and 2 could be ready for delivery by 2013. Avida is the middle-income condominium brand of Ayala Land.

While Avida projects in Manila average a sale of 25 units monthly, the Cebu project is hitting 125 units a month. And the units are taken up mostly by local buyers with expatriate Filipinos—a major market of real-estate projects—just barely learning about the project through Avida’s road shows overseas

Tower 2 will be composed of 527 units and offers a great view of Asiatown IT Park as well as proximity to the development’s amenities like the swimming pools, clubhouse and function rooms.

The project was initially targeted for launch in September 2011. The project is Avida Land Corp.’s first vertical condominium project outside Luzon.

Avida Towers Cebu is a joint-venture project of Avida and Asian I-Office, a subsidiary of Cebu Property Ventures Development Corp.

i think now is the right time to develop their lots, mao tingali ipademolish na..i can imagine hotels/condos and BPO buildings lined up along the streets of NRA, with shops, restos and cafes @ the ground level..with nice landscapes and trees at the sidewalk, similar to that of the ITpark...:)

its much nicer if they only build medium-rise to a hi-rise of up to 25 storey at the NRA, so when your at the harbor, it wont block the view of the mountains and the taller buildings at the back...

sir @randz, parehas gyud tag imagination! maayo unta matinuod ng atong imagination! heheh

i have no idea, now, but i can check ... most probably ... no.

all i know is that in 2001-2003, when i was city administrator, i knew that
our firetruck ladders had limited height and could not reach the highest floors
of the existing buildings then. i was negotiating for a donation from a japa-
nese city for taller ladders, used ones but very much serviceable, and more
importantly tall enough for us, but that was cut short when some members of
the city council complained i was always travelling to japan (abi kaha nila
kung madala ra ug email-email nang magnegotiate kag donation he he he ).

i am sure today, if the top floor of crown regency catches fire, it will be a
sight to behold .... yes - a sight to behold, kay kutob ra man ta tan-aw ...

It is not just probable sir, it is definite..!!! There's no aerial ladder that can reach 15 floors I believe. It could also be negated if the fire pipes are well maintained and we have enough pressure to raise it at least 100psi not to include the existing truck pressure. I'm not ever sure either if they already have SCBA, enough for the responding personnel just in case of thick smoke (just like the same with the recent incident at Insular then put it inside the building and it is night). I remembered 1 time of a fire beside Foda when they ask ERUF to get inside bec. they only have 2-3 BA and it's dammm heavy.

I can relate with you re: fire truck donation. I remembered Haarlemmermeer.

He did..? Unsa man intawn nasulod sa utok ni Robredo oi. Giunsa man niya paghuna-huna kaha ang security sa safety.

OTOH, (re: first paragraph) even those are being installed but maintenance holds the same degree of hazard as well which most just left unattended. Usahay gipuy-an nalang og hormigas. The same thing with trainings for first responders. <big sigh>

ang pinaka grabe nga sunog sa sugbo sa mga dagkong establishments kay ang pagka sunog sa 7 storey Manila Bang kilid sa Metro Gaisano. There's a lot of witness atong higayuna, puno nag taw ang kanang atbang sa Metro samtang nag tan aw sa mga na trap sa 4th floor sa building hangtod sige silag saka og naabot nalang og rooftop and the fire fighters struggled to reach them with their very short fire ladder nga nag lisod og kab ot sa 4th floor. Hangtod gi engulf na sa kayo ang tibuok 4-7 floors nya perting paiga wa mga na trap didto sa rooftop... Luoy gyud tong pang hitaboa. And now dili lang kutob sa 4 floors ang mga bag ong buildings diri sa Cebu. Hinaot nana tay fire trucks for hi-rises puhon before mahitabog balik tong sunog sa Manila Bank.

BFP ordered to cut requirements for fire safety certificates
July 23, 2010, 4:14pm
Manila Bulletin

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has been ordered to cut requirements in issuing fire safety inspection certificates (FSIC) to business establishments in the hopes of curbing graft and corruption.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo announced that he has directed the BFP to immediately discontinue the practice of requiring Fire and Life Safety Assessment Report (FALAR) prior to the issuance of the FSIC.

Robredo explained that the FALAR has become a source of graft and corruption.

In a directive to BFP chief Director Rolando M. Bandilla, Robredo said that there have been unverified reports that some BFP officials have “volunteered” to prepare the FALARs for FSIC applicants for a fee.

“This is contrary to this administration’s advocacy of honest governance,” he stressed.

Robredo also pointed out that though the Rules and Regulations of Republic Act 9514 or the Fire Code of the Philippines has been the basis for the FALAR before issuance of a FSIC, such requirement is however wanting in the law itself that it seeks to implement. (Jeffrey Damicog)

Apil ra ba unta sa FALAR ang tanang report sa condition sa fire protection equipment; fire pumps, pressure switches, hydrant water flow switches for alarms, fire alarms sytems (heat and smoke detectors and controls, sprinklers (high-rise buildings), emergency exits and ladders, fire extinguishers, fire drills, etc.

It sure would be nice if they'd restore this one because you won't see a lot of buildings like this anymore. Like downtown San Francisco, they have kept their old buildings. example buildings around the Union Square and Embarcadero.

Seriously, Cebu is party central. It's where those dancing prisoners are from. Every podunk little Gilligan's Island village in the Philippines has a basketball court, a beauty salon, and a karaoke bar, and they are ALL packed, all the time. Crazy place, but fun.

The first -ber month of 2010, passed so quickly and now it's October! I know that a lot of people are very jubilant about this month. Halloween? Yes. But most of all, Oktoberfest! The fun starts now!

Marco Polo Plaza Cebu General Manager Hans Hauri welcomes guests, VIPs and the media to the launch of Oktoberfest 2010

Yesterday, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu launched Oktoberfest 2010: Bavarian Food Festival. Now on its 5th year, the event runs until October 10, 2010.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4148/5043287087_089b6f1284_o.jpg
Also present during the launch was Germany's Honorary Consul in Cebu, Dr. Franz Seidenschwarz and he tells us more about the origins of the Oktoberfest.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5043913116_b7bd2de467_o.jpg
Marco Polo Plaza Cebu Food and Bevarage Manager, Mr. Stephan Wieprich, tells us more about what to expect in Marco Polo's Oktoberfest celebration

The Oktoberfest celebration is actually turning 177 years old this year! The original Oktoberfest can be traced in Munich, Bavaria, Germany on October 12, 1810. (if we follow the Philippine setup, Bavaria is a province while Munich is a city) It is a celebration of thanksgiving and gratitude wherein farmers from Munich's agricultural countryside converge for 16-18 days to party and live life to its fullest.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4128/5043913384_0a711433a2_o.jpg
True to the spirit of Oktoberfest, Mr. Hans Hauri sports a Bavarian outfit.

When you make mention of Oktoberfest, the first thing that comes to mind is beer, booze. But did you know that beer was originally not part of the festivities? According to the official Munich Oktoberfest website, the first Oktoberfest celebration in 1810 was mainly about the agricultural fair that lasted for five days and ended with a horse race. The next Oktoberfest celebrations introduced beer and transformed it into becoming the world's biggest beer drinking event that has put the spotlight on Bavarian culture.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4132/5043913740_8faedb13b6_o.jpg
No ribbon-cutting ceremonies...

Oktoberfest is now a big annual event that is celebrated in many countries worldwide! A lot of establishments are staging Oktoberfest events that will make you feel like you're in Munich in an instant.

..just the traditional slicing of the loaf with, (from L-R) Dr. Seidenschwarz, Mr. Hans Hauri and Guest Chef Dietmar Dietrich. Oktoberfest 2010 is NOW OPEN!

For the entire duration of Marco Polo Plaza's Oktoberfest Celebration, Cafe Marco will be serving "crude" German dishes including traditional sausages like the bratwurst (usually composed of veal, pork or beef), Weißwürste (white sausages - a speciality from Munich, traditionally eaten for second breakfast and always accompanied by sweet mustard, pretzels, and wheat beer) and other traditional food such as pretzels, sauerkraut (fermented finely shredded cabbage), among others. To make the celebration more authentic, Austrian Chef Dietmar Dietrich is serving as a guest chef for the hotel's Oktoberfest Celebration.

So what are you waiting for? Go to Marco Polo Plaza Cebu and celebrate Oktoberfest 2010! For inquiries and reservations, dial 253-1111 loc 8245 or email mpplaza@marcopolohotels.com.

October has been declared as the month for International Breast Cancer Awareness. At this time of the year, major companies, corporations, organizations and citizens come together to raise awareness for the disease.

Chordonwood, headed by violinist Marc Hamlet Mercado, serenaded cancer patients and survivors, guests, VIPs, members of the media and shoppers to some classical music

Yesterday October 1, Ayala Center Cebu, being the mall that cares, launched its Think Pink! Campaign. Now on its 3rd year, the campaign is intended to promote breast cancer awareness. The campaign, which began on October 2008, aims to highlight the importance of having a healthy lifestyle through exercise and good nutrition.

The Think Pink presscon, like all other Ayala Center Cebu events, started on time ;)
The color pink has become an international symbol for breast cancer awareness after a series of campaigns and fund-raising activities which successfully raised money for several breast cancer care and research programs.

Ms. Mary Anne "Me'anne" Alcordo-Salomon, former president of the Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente, spearheads I Can Serve Foundation's Cebu Chapter. She shares her story as a breast cancer patient and her passion in empowering other breast cancer patients now as a breast cancer survivor.
This year, Ayala Center Cebu intensifies the Think Pink campaign further by making it a venue for both cancer patients and survivors to share their stories which would serve as a call for everyone to always aim to be in the "pink of health" (thus the campaign name, Think Pink). This occasion aims to provide information on the disease and encourages total health and wellness among women and the general populace.

Be in the Pink of Health and Make a Mark!

Last year, Ayala Center Cebu’s Think Pink campaign won the top prize in the community relations–marketing category of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Awards . The award was presented by ICSC chairman Peter Sharpe and ICSC president Michael Kercheval to the Ayala Malls team comprised of senior vice president and Ayala Malls Group head Marivic Añonuevo, vice president and chief operating officer Rowena Tomeldan, and senior division manager and marketing head Cathy Bengzon. The 2009 ICSC Asia Shopping Center Award recognized "outstanding achievement in marketing" and it was open to shopping center owners, management companies, architects and designers, and retailers across Asia.

Ayala Center Cebu's campaign continues this year as it focuses on promoting a holistic lifestyle through good food, great fashion, and healthy living.

Kythe Foundation supports kid cancer patients by alleviating the anxiety of the innocent pediatric patients and helping kids cope with the challenges of hospitalization.

To further encourage shoppers to be in the Pink of Health and make a mark, Ayala Center Cebu, the premier shopping, entertainment, and lifestyle destination in Southern Philippines, invites us as they fill the whole month of October with a variety of health and wellness activities and other entertaining events.

The Hotel That Can

By MALOU E. ROSAL
October 2, 2010, 2:47pm

http://www.mb.com.ph/sites/default/files/Radisson-Blu-Hotel.jpg
Radisson Blu Hotel is Cebu's latest travel hub.

Cebu tourism just got another shot in the arm with the recent opening of Radisson Blue Hotel. Strategically located right beside SM City Cebu, this 400-room luxury property showcases interiors marked by the use of Cebu’s local natural elements like wood, carvings, weavings, and pearls. Technologically forward, each room is equipped with 37-inch flat screen televisions and iPod docking stations, as well as complimentary high-speed Internet.

Radisson guests can also opt to take the hotel’s Business Class package. Based on the concept of “travel empathy”, Business Class allows for the full use of the Radisson Club Lounge with complimentary breakfast and evening cocktails, and use of a meeting room. Other perks come in the form of upgraded room and amenities, complimentary daily newspaper, turn-down service, express check-in and check-out services, a Nespresso coffee machine in the guestroom, and complimentary pressing of garments upon arrival. A late check-out of 6:00 PM is also available, subject to room availability.

The hotel offers an eclectic food spread at Feria, the main dining outlet which highlights breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets featuring Asian, Mediterranean, Japanese, cold seafood, and dessert stations set up in a contemporary interactive food market style. Guests lounging at the 800-meter freeform swimming pool can take a bite of fresh seafood off the grill and local and international cuisine.

Meetings, conventions, and special events also come alive at the Radisson. Perfect for social occasions with a seating capacity of 1,200 guests, the Santa Maria Grand Ballroom is pillar-free with eight-meter high ceilings. The Nina Ballroom can easily accomodate 650 guests. For smaller meetings and functions, the hotel has 10 rooms that open up to a central meeting plaza that serves Great Breaks. This is the hotel’s new food and beverage concept that centers on freshly prepared morning and afternoon refreshments.

From rooms to F&B to MICE facilities, Radisson promises guest satisfaction based on the “Yes, I Can!” service philosophy. This hallmark of world-renowned travel and hospitality company Carlson Hotels, to which Radisson is a part of, emphasizes service devoted to the unique needs and wants of individual hotel guests. The hotel’s general manager Grant Gaskin said: “Our staff is trained to provide seamless quality service that will leave a positive lasting impression on guests.” And while most hotels claim this quality, Gaskin believes that Radisson can do it better because of the company’s environment that allows them to give the extra mile.

Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu is partnered with SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Philippine conglomerate SM Investments Corporation. Elizabeth T. Sy, president of SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation said: “The inaugural launch of Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu is a fulfillment of the dram long held by my father and SM chairman, Henry Sy, Sr., to open the premier hotel in Cebu.

Although the hotel’s completion was put on hold during the nineties due to the prevailing business climate then, we never lost our vision of one day opening its doors to welcome guests from all over the world. In light of our optimism about the prospects of Philippine tourism and the resurgence of the economy, we exerted our utmost efforts to ensure that the highest quality in the hotel’s design, functionality, detail, and artwork is firmly in place for its opening. Thus, we are confident that the Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu will be the tourist destination of choice and the leading events venue in Cebu City and nearby regions. It is SM’s contribution to Philippine tourism which embodies our chairman’s great enthusiasm on the industry’s bright prospects.”

Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu is located at Sergio Osmena Blvd., corner Juan Luna Ave., Cebu City, Philippines. For more information and reservations, call (63 32) 4029900, (63 32) 5051700; fax (63 32) 4029999; email: reservations.cebu@radisson.com; or log on to their website: radissonblu.com/hotel-cebu.

we should have one dedicated to our beloved cebu port which has history on its side. san francisco has one which i have visitied. duna pud diri sa port of long beach/san pedro area pero ang ilaha mga karaan warship nga giconvert into museum so more or less floating museum.
One of this day, maabot ra unya na sa Cebu. We can see a lot of imrpovements already when it comes to historical restoration.
ang pinaka grabe nga sunog sa sugbo sa mga dagkong establishments kay ang pagka sunog sa 7 storey Manila Bang kilid sa Metro Gaisano. There's a lot of witness atong higayuna, puno nag taw ang kanang atbang sa Metro samtang nag tan aw sa mga na trap sa 4th floor sa building hangtod sige silag saka og naabot nalang og rooftop and the fire fighters struggled to reach them with their very short fire ladder nga nag lisod og kab ot sa 4th floor. Hangtod gi engulf na sa kayo ang tibuok 4-7 floors nya perting paiga wa mga na trap didto sa rooftop... Luoy gyud tong pang hitaboa. And now dili lang kutob sa 4 floors ang mga bag ong buildings diri sa Cebu. Hinaot nana tay fire trucks for hi-rises puhon before mahitabog balik tong sunog sa Manila Bank.[/img]
This is another reason why high rise should have a dedicated helipad for this kind of situation but again if only the pipelines inside the building (if there's any) is working or in good condition and that there are personnel trained in this event then it should be mitigated. It's so ironical that companies invest so muhc on some thing else but not in safety. Thus my sig below came to exist. I'm confident inside SM & ACC, their personnel were trained annually.

One of the mysterious fire is Magellan's hotel. You think?
Tinuod gyud na siya!i-click diri! (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/268482/bfp-ordered-cut-requirements)
BFP ordered to cut requirements for fire safety certificates
July 23, 2010, 4:14pm
[I]Manila Bulletin

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has been ordered to cut requirements in issuing fire safety inspection certificates (FSIC) to business establishments in the hopes of curbing graft and corruption.!
Compromising safety from corruption is the wrong choice of priority. He should attend one of those those safety trainings, so he knows what it's like.

^^without the robust and brave entry of Cebu Pacific into the business, air travel would never be same as to convenience and affordability until this day...they may have their failures and shortcomings as they begin to soar high, it is bearable though not an excuse to perform better if not best but we also have to consider that there is no such thing as "perfect" only room for improvements....^^

is the osmena area safe at night?

No expert on tours but I suggest you ride the white taxis if you're just four in your group. Taxis here are all metered.
I've not heard snatching incidents near Parian district, more so if you go in groups.
There are people at the Fuente Osmena Circle always at night. Besides, the Fuente Osmena Police Station is just across the street.

Weesam ferry terminal here (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Weesam+terminal&gl=ph&ie=UTF8&hl=en&view=map&cid=17299832543569227075&iwloc=A&ved=0CBgQpQY&sa=X&ei=d32oTLbCCcyOkQWclIGQBg)

We have lots of members in the tourism industry here in SCC. Just wait for a while.

what is the cheapest but easy way to travel from airport to Osmena Blvd?

- WHITE metered taxis on the departure level.. mactan airport to cebu city proper costs around 150-200php depending on traffic... taxi capacity is 4 passengers

I would like to ask locals if it is safe to walk around pari-an district? could we walk around with a camera around our neck?

- yes its generally safe to do so, especially in groups... but I discourage the 'walk with the camera around the neck'....

we have already checked the jeepney routes, it seems we could manage to go around the city by jeep. is it safe? (marami kasing holdaper sa jeep dito manila...)

- honestly, depends on the area.. but cebu city has lots of police check point areas for jeepneys... ang ma suggest ko lang talaga is to be alert at wag maging tanga tanga...

is the osmena area safe at night?

- fuente area is pretty much safe at night, with all the 24 hour drug stores, fast foods, etc....

what pier is weesam terminal?
- pier 4? sorry not sure

is weather still okay there? :))

yes sunny but with the occassional rain showers

Me too! I'm becoming a fan of Mayor Mike. A boulevard if maintained will have countless benefits for perpetuity. It's a shame that a coastal city doesn't have a seaside boulevard. I assume there would be open space easements from the shore and pedestrian access. Go, go Cebu!

And for the record, why did they scratch the city band idea?

Breaking news:

Fire hits Cebu village, school

Monday, October 4, 2010

CLASSES were suspended in Southwestern University (SWU) in Cebu City as fire hit Barangay Sambag 1 in the city past 9 a.m. Monday.

The fire was believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in a house of one Caridad Sanchez in Sitio Atis, which is located at the back of the SWU.

The fire, which already reached the Task Force Charlie alarm, quickly spread as houses and boarding houses, mostly rented by students, were made of light materials. The fire area is also surrounded by trees.

The College of Engineering building of the SWU was already affected and its roof was totally burned.

Fire trucks from Danao City and fire fighters from Argao also helped the Cebu City Fire Department in putting off the fire.

Authorities said the residents affected by fire will temporarily be evacuated in the barangay gym and they will be readying packed lunch for them. Students were also evacuated.

The fire is ongoing and fire fighters are still conducting operations to put off the fire. (Sunnex)

btw, any news about zidlakan appointment?

i have read a few articles from sunstar recently with gwen's not so subtle statement on the capabilities of a new head.

clearly she is trying to prevent zids appointment to the post.

hinuon, makatawa lagi ko that she is trying to derail the appointment, kay si francia bya extended lang ang term.

pero si gwen it seems is moving heaven and earth to prevent it.
