Downtown Cebu -- the oldest part of the city. Much of the roads were designed by a Spanish engineer (a Friar) according to an account posted at the Fort San Pedro Museum. This is Cebu's real business district.

University belt. The old universities of Cebu are in close proximity to each other. Not visible is University of San Jose Recoletos which is located further south. Cebu State College (top part of map, founded as CNS in 1914) was converted to Cebu Normal University in 1998.

Uptown or Midtown? One of the city's tourist belts. Take note of the many budget pension houses and inns that are in close proximity to each other.

North Reclamation Area. A central business district that is yet to evolve.

AsiaTown IT Park, once called the Cebu Civic and Trade Center. Formerly the Lahug Airport, the runway is now the main avenue of this IT Zone.

The road artery is not indicated in this old map.

Cebu Business Park. The city's neo-business district in the making. Developed by the Ayalas during the early 90s, this was once the Club Filipino Golf Course with a hotel that overlooked it.

The old Hipodromo Race Track is now full of houses and buildings. Roads that cross the original oval track have also been built throughout the years.

The old memorial parks of Cebu are just beside each other.

City pays SRP debt early
Published: 02 February 2006

CEBU CITY yesterday turned over a P267-million check to the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) as advance payment to its loan amortization on the South Reclamation Project.
Deadline for the payment was still scheduled for Feb. 20, but Mayor Tomas Osmeña that the city would save on interest payments of the city paid in advance.

On Feb. 20, the city government was due to pay an amortization of 581,154,127 yen for the loan it took out for the 290-hectare SRP.

SRP project manager Paul Villarete said the amount is equivalent to P267 million as of last Tuesday's currency exchange rates.

Villarete said the interest payment is almost equivalent to the principal because the amount covers 299.9 million yen as principal and 281-million yen in interest.
"(If we pay now), we can save a little and we have the money now. The peso equivalent (from yen) changes everyday," Villarete earlier explained.

As to how much the city government would save from the interest payment, Osmeña said this would be about P2 million. Villarete said though that he has not yet finished computing the exact savings.

Port tax

As for the P120 million in taxes that the city collected from the Cebu Ports Authority (CPA), Osmeña said none of the amount would go to financing the SRP.

The mayor said half of the tax from the CPA would be spent on restoring the roads and drainage systems of the North Reclamation Area instead.

Japanese fugitive arrested

THE long arm of the law finally caught up with a Japanese who had the misfortune to mistake the Philippines as a good place to evade justice.

Fujio Sasaki, 56, wanted in Japan after convicted twice of possession and use of illegal drugs was arrested by agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan Island, Cebu.

Sasaki entered the country as a tourist for an initial stay of 21 days, but sought extension to stay up to March this year. He entered the country through the Mactan Airport.

Sasaki, records at the bureau show, was convicted of two counts of violating Japan's stimulants control law for consuming shabu in February. He is facing imprisonment and a fine of 30,000 yen.

He fled Japan before the warrant for his arrest could be served.

Sasaki will be deported back to Japan and will be banned from re-entering the country.

Mobile phone maker eyes big share of Cebu market

To keep up with the stiff competition in the cellular phone manufacturing industry, Finland-based Nokia Philippines Inc. (Nokia) plans to focus on the local market, especially Cebu, beginning this year.

Nokia Philippines general manager Parikshit Bhasin said Nokia’s plans to increase visibility in Cebu is also a tribute to the province for being one of the most dynamic markets in the Philippines.

Visible

“We will be visible in Cebu now (more than ever) through events and product launchings among others. We are realigning our resources to capture the provincial markets,” he told a media gathering at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort last Tuesday.

“Cebu is the next big city to conquer,” Bhasin said.

He said the 140-year old Nokia, which has transformed from being a producer of groundwood, rubber and cable to cellular phones, has occupied the “top position” in the global cellular phone manufacturing industry in the past six years.

But Nokia will always be on its toes, as other cellular phone manufacturing companies are also aggressive in their marketing efforts.

Bhasin said Nokia allots a large budget on research to maintain Nokia’s “user-friendly” edge over its competitors and produce new models to cater to the needs of different segments of the market.

Aside from manufacturing cellular phones, Nokia also provides network infrastructure to two of the largest telecommunications company in the country: Globe Telecom and Smart Communications Inc.

Network

Bhasin said Smart’s network is 100 percent Nokia while while some 60 percent of Globe’s network is serviced by Nokia.

Nokia is now selling 26 cellular phone models in the Philippines. The company will be launching 11 more new cell phone models within this quarter.

Bhasin said the average life cycle of cellular phones in the Philippines is from 24 to 30 months. This means that most people change their cellular phones after 24 to 30 months.

He said there are 35 million Nokia users in the Philippines, at present.

The firm aims to increase this number to three billion by 2008. (JBN)

Eversince her and Piolo Pascual's commercial seeped into the consciousness of televiewers, Isabel Oli's life has never been the same. In fact, that commercial changed her life. In no time, Isabel gained popularity, became a public property and now Isabel gears for even bigger things as she gets more and more TV and movie projects and product endorsements, the latest of which is Fly Wear. But let's get back to this later.

Maria Olivia Daytia So in real life, Isabel Oli is the youngest of four children of a pure-Chinese father and Filipino-Spanish mother. A Libran (she turned 24 on Oct. 20), Isabel graduated from the University of San Jose Recoletos in Cebu with the degree of Information Technology .

If she didn't make it as commercial and fashion model here, Isabel would have joined her family in Singapore but she would still have tried to pursue the same career and study too in the Lion City .

Isabel revealed that for that Max's Fried Chicken commercial with Piolo Pascual, she was asked to cry and because she'd been so depressed (for always going to VTRs but not being hired to do any commercial) she cried so naturally she got the job.

"I was already losing hope and so I was really depressed. Kaya when I was called for the final casting and they told me to cry, umiyak ako out of depression, yong natural na iyak. Sabi nila, siya na, siya na... and I got the commercial. That started everything." Isabel said, her Cebuano accent betraying her when she's excited. It is for this that Isabel wants to go through a workshop again, this time to concentrate on speech improvement.

Isabel's first TV appearance was in ABS-CBN 's "It Might Be You" and it was in that show that she was spotted by Ms. Wilma Galvante , VP for progamming of GMA-7. Wilma must have seen in her a great potential that's why she made her an offer, and Wilma wasn't mistaken. Now a GMA talent, Isabel has proven her mettle via "Sugo" and other shows of GMA-7 like "Extra Challenge" and "Love to Love Season 9," and now she is also doing a movie with Mark Herras entitled "Moments of Love."

The movie is slated for an early 2006 release. Directed by Mark Reyes, "Moments of Love" also stars Dingdong Dantes, Karylle, Iza Calzado and Dion Ignacio .

Now, as a model, Isabel is no stranger to the style scene. Having graced the pages of numerous fashion magazines, and a titleholder of MTV's Best Model of the Year 2003 , Isabel is an individual whom many admire for her sense of style and individuality.

As to her personal style, this sums it all: "I'm the kind of gal who enjoys experimenting with her looks and dressing according to how I feel. Sometimes, I like my look to be dressy. There are days when I go for the smart, casual look. There are also time when I pick out sporty, plauful pieces.

A self-proclaimed shop-aholic, there is one accessory Isabel cannot do without: Fly Wear. Whether she is off to a shoot location or simply hanging around malls or cafés, Isabel always adds spunk and character to her ensemble by sporting the innovative styles of Fly Wear.

She shares: "I practically like Fly Wear because it complements my personal style. Being a free-spirited and versatile girl, I find that Fly's pieces can be cool, trendy, classy and funky." With a wide array of styles to choose from this season, Fly eyewear allows young, hip personalities like Isabel to express themselves and their personal styles with its extensive selection of eyewear.

Isabel adds: "The industry that I am in challenges me and allows me to improve myself professionally." Despite the demands of her job, and tight schedules, the stunning morena insists that fashion remains one of her greatest loves. At a very young age, Isabel remembers that she loved playing dress-up. Candidly, she says "I've been wearing shades since I was a kid!"

Isabel declares that Fly's eyewear adds character to her outfits, making her the ideal style sister many have come to admire. "Fly pieces are timeless. They remain simple yet stylish."

Part of being a young celeb requires numerous meetings during the day. On those occasions, one will find Isabel sporting Jackie O-inspired frames ? a perfect finishing touch. The practical and sensible fashionista concludes: "The other good thing about Fly is that their shades are reasonably priced. As a person who loves good buys, Fly is definitely the brand that offers value for money. I am able to go around in most up-to-date styles in eyewear without having to spend too much."

First car carrier ship to be built in Cebu

By Minerva BC

Cebu City -- A Cebu-based heavy industries firm is set to build the first car carrier ship in 2006.

Tsuneishi Heavy Industries Cebu Inc (THICI) director, Roberto Aboitiz said, the vessel, Pure Cars and Truck Carrier (PCTC) can accommodate more than 5,000 private cars that will be transported from and to various points of destinations here and abroad. The PCTC is built with hydraulics, ramps and multi-level parking areas.

THICI president, Kenji Kawano explained, the ship is 35 meters high, 32.2 meters wide and 170 meters long, which is more than twice the height and longer in length of the regular bulk ship that the company had built.

Kawano added, Tsuneishi is scheduled to start its legwork and preparations and is expected to launch the PCTC on September 23, this year.

Aboitiz on the other hand said, the car carrier ship is the first for Tsuneishi. "It's going to be an exciting news, considering that the company employs more than 5000 workers, 70% of whom come from Balamban," Aboitiz added.

The THICI director went on that the company generates P7Million on its annual payroll that means jobs and spending power for the local markets in Cebu. Tsuneishi also delivered its first bulk carrier ship in 1997, launched its 58th ship in December and it was able to build 12 bulk carrier ships in 2005.

The "floating parking lot," will be built in Tsuneishi's shipyard, a world-class ship building facility located at the West Cebu Industrial Park in Balamban, Cebu. This is the 4th largest ship building company in the world, next to Korea, Japan and China.

Aboitiz gladly announced that because of the seal of quality THICI has on its products, and the Filipino workmanship in ship building industry, the world's number one ship builder in Korea is putting up its own ship building facility in the country, and its looking at Subic as the site of the facility.(PIA-Cebu)

Oil drilling in Cebu continues

By Minerva BC

Cebu City -- In the search for alternative sources of energy, oil drilling in Cebu continues as the world oil prices experienced a 'roller coaster' ride.

Eduardo Amante, chief of the energy resource development and utilization division of the Dept. of Energy (DOE) reported that presently, there are at least five (5) oil explorations that are being undertaken in the Visayas by foreign-owned companies. These include the drillings in Tañon Strait, Bohol Strait, Central Cebu, Southern Cebu and Northwestern Leyte.

"This is still exploration and no time frame when it could finish the job. Contractors continue to explore them to determine the existence of gas deposits and their commercial quantity and viability," Amante added.

So far, however, only Forum Exploration has found gas reserves in the Libertad gas field in Bogo, Cebu that is viable only for small-scale operation. DOE undersecretary, Guillermo Balce earlier said, the Bogo natural gas is only second to Malampaya gas fields in Palawan in terms of volume. Malampaya has gas deposits of up to 3.4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas which is being used to fuel power plants in Luzon, while the Bogo gas field has about one trillion cubic feet that is good enough to run a 1.75 MW power plant, that Forum Exploration plans to develop and operate this year.

Amante further said, in the Southern part of Cebu for instance, the drilling already reached 6,000 feet and DOE would still do some tests. DOE-Manila would soon announce the commercial viability of the oil deposits in the areas that are being explored.

According to Amante, once the Bogo gas fields are developed and operated, Bogo and Cebu province would benefit from cheaper power and more revenues because plans are already underway to develop gas wells into power plants and electricity would be sold to the Cebu Electric Company.

Presently, DOE bared that Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. Ltd., is analyzing the results of the survey in the Tañon Strait and it will conduct geological and geophysical studies and will also drill up to three more wells. Gas 2 Grid on the other hand, is conducting the same studies in Central Cebu; Phil-Mal Patroenergy Corp in Southern Cebu and Alcorn Resources in Northwestern Leyte. (PIA-Cebu)

New investor in Cebu
By Fred C. Espinoza

For the casual observer, the mere sight of more new magnificent buildings rising in our community as well as in other principal cities in the country makes one wonder how this phenomenon ever happened so fast and so soon in our lifetime considering the state of our economy and the huge investment needed in pursuing this development.

Nevertheless, one might even wonder further whether this would be an indication that better times are just around the corner. The answer, of course, is yes if the prognosis of Singapore-based market analysts is to be believed.

To recall, they were the first to welcome the unprecedented growth of the property sector in Asia as the hottest news at the turn of the century, aside from the economic boom of China.

To say that the growing confidence among the players in the property sector in the region will continue to remain in the Philippines should not be viewed as an overstatement, based on confidential information I gathered yesterday:

The Fasten Housing and Development Inc. (pronounced fas-ten) has already started the construction of a 19-storey residential condominium project at the Cebu Business Park, the premier business and recreation center in the Visayas.

I also got it from the horses mouth that Messrs. Suo Kyu Baek and Young Beomlee, president and vice president, respectively, of Fasten Housing and Developing (FHDI) flew in to Cebu from Manila and hosted a launch for a couple of friends at the Business Park.

In my talk with the noted Cebuano architect Jose Mari Cañizares and his fellow executive of the company, Cha-Cha Rama, the better half of former Cebu vice governor Enrique Rama, in their office right at the project site, he confided to me that the “lifestyle of the people in Cebu” had also been a major factor in Fasten’s decision to launch its Tower Palace at the Cebu Business Park.

“When you’re in Manila, you only exist. But in Cebu you live because Cebuanos enjoy a life of leisure,” he explained. Another point he cited was the gratitude of the people of South Korea for the presence of Filipino troops during the Korean War. This he learned from Fasten’s top officials in the course of their meeting.

Cha-Cha Rama cited the presence of an integrated business park in the community, the bright prospects of Cebu becoming the favorite home for future retires from different countries in the years ahead, and the unique development of the Cebu Business Park and its strategic location has somehow become a strong magnet for more foreign investments in this part of the country.

“The Cebuanos’ warm hospitality has somehow found a good place in the hearts of Korean investors,” Cha-Cha noted with great interest. Perhaps, the Korean investors decided to invest at the Cebu Business Park because they also want the people who will invest in their project to enjoy the unique amenities that are offered in such an integrated development. These amenities include hassle-free travel within the park, enjoyable living, shopping and recreation. It is also convenient that the place is close to service institutions, beach resorts and other favorite tourist spots in the region, Rama said.

A French investor at Cebu Business Park, Patrick Tsesemeli, who first learned about the project, had expressed high hopes for the Tower Palace. “As far as Cebu is concerned, the rapidly growing metropolis is now in a better position to host the first luxury residential condominium in the country,” he said.

Fasten officials have commissioned the J. M. Canizares Architect firm to develop the architectural design for the project.

The 19-story Tower Palace will have a total of 200 residential condominium units and 218 parking slots. Condominium unit types are one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom and penthouse.

The Fasten Group of Companies, which was established 25 years ago, also maintains an office in Saudi Arabia. It is composed of the Fasten Housing which was establish to launch the Tower Palace, Fasten Construction with offices in Manila and Cebu. The Fasten Group of Companies were also engaged in some projects such as the walling system for Globe and Smart telecommunication firms. Fasten is involved in building materials supply in Manila.

Lexmark wants Cebu facility
to be complete design hub
Published: 03 February 2006

by Irene R. Sino Cruz

A CEBU-based printer design company wants to make its Cebu facility a complete design center.
Lexmark Research and Design Corp. (LRDC) sees this happening in three to four years.

"In the end, our goal is in three to four years, we develop a complete printer from start to finish," LRDC president Stan Combs said.

At present, LRDC employees number about 700, many of whom are graduates of computer engineering, computer science and electronics engineering.

According to Combs, the Cebu facility has been doing computer programming and engineering as well as software and hardware development.

However, Combs said, these are used only as components of the entire process of designing printers.

"All Lexmark printers sold all over the world carry software developed here in the Cebu facility," he pointed out.

Combs recalled that the decision to locate in Cebu was made after considering 10 different countries in Asia, including Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, India and China.

"Six years ago, Lexmark started a search for a location of its research and development facility. In the end, the Philippines was the best choice," Combs said.

The country's strategic location, which is only several hours away from anywhere in Asia, made the Philippines a good choice, he said.

"The English language is spoken naturally in the Philippines. People here are very well-educated," Combs pointed out.

He said the committee which conducted the search for the location of its research and development facility also looked at the universities in Cebu and other areas in the Philippines and saw that there were good engineering programs here.

The company has been pleased with the performance of the facility based on its five-year track record, Combs said.

This enabled the company to feel confident about investing a huge amount in the construction of two buildings, he added.

While LRDC considers hiring the right workers a challenge, he said that the presence of good schools in the Philippines also ensures that there are good talents.

"We choose the top 10 percent of the graduating class of selected universities," Combs said.
The company hires graduates, not only from Cebu universities, but also those from Metro Manila and Mindanao.

"Finding enough good people is a challenge for us. We have to train them. We constantly send many employees to the US for three to six months training," he added.

The first building which will house the R&D equipment and facility, stands between seven to eight floors and is targeted for completion in February 2007.

The second building, which will have 22 floors, will start construction after the completion of the first building.

Lexmark has also considered the South Road Properties (former South Reclamation project) among the options for the location of the buildings, Combs said.

However, the company chose the property owned by Efficient Holdings, which is located at the Cebu Business Park, because of its proximity to the existing offices.

At present, LRDC occupies 10 of the 16 floors of Globe Innove building and three floors of the adjacent Keppel building.

LRDC is the research and development division of Lexmark Corp., an American computer printer corporation founded in 1991 as a spin-off of technology corporation IBM's printer-manufacturing division.

Lexmark became publicly held and traded in 1995.

Immersion Program Kicks Off at IAFT

CEBU, PHILIPPINES - After much anticipation by international media, the International Academy of Film and Television's one-year immersion program finally launched on January 17.

Industry watchers are sitting up because this means a steady stream of filmmakers from film capitals such as Los Angeles and New York, will be making its way for Mactan island in Cebu, where the academy is located, to take up teaching positions. When I passed through SRP last week, I saw the Baywalk development and I found it too narrow.

yup, too narrow in the Malacañan sa Sugbo side but the baywalk development area is still too long, the other side of the baywalk will continue from SRP stretching upto kawit island and from Kawit island down to Talisay City area... That stretch is 7kms long and it's quite wide.

My father said that it's visible from the 8th floor of the Cebu City hall, maybe I'll take pics next week.

^^

Let's not call it a baywalk.. Just some sort of a park to make the surrounding area clean just like the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.. It's ugly kasi to see a dusty underground tunnel used by large trucks with all those dark fumes, etc..etc..

Anyway, a portion of the South Coastal Road would also be developed like the linear parks along Roxas boulevard.

just wana share what I've seen kanina... Nangumpra ako mama sa Carbon then after sa La Nueva City Hall Center from 1 to 4:30 but it's very tiring if I'll go with her, nagpabilin lang ko sa Sto. Niño.
Nalingaw jud ko sa mga turista mga bai, buses with European tourists have numbers in the windshield, bus 1 to bus 9 then after those 9 buses that visited the Sto. Niño, Magellans Cross... another three buses of Korean tourists arrived... I've noticed that most of them are families from father to their children... there's also an epiliptic or special child Korean boy who joined the trip... so all in all before we left I've counted 12 buses full of European (9buses) and Korean (3buses) tourists that visited the area from 1pm to 4:30. Right now even with that stampede tradgedy, I'm still very much ok now coz of what I saw ganiha :D grrrr.

Cebu's mid-town skyline will dramatically change before the year ends. Tower II (above photo) is still on its 15th level. 25 levels to go! but wait there's more! hehe. there's a crown deck pa! wow! unbelievable! we're not done yet, Club Ultima will put up an air-bridge somewhere on the 20th level to connect with Tower II. amazing! call now!
