WE NEED MORE HOTELS!!! hehehe.

there are a lot of "family tourists" now in cebu, ambot diin ni silang lugara gikan! ug unsa gyud ilang gikabuangan sa cebu, hehehe, pero wen i was at sm a few days ago, there were caucasian famillies na nagsuroy suroy and its not the typical filipina wife caucasian husband thingy. i see korean families here in mactan sad, actually we have a neighbor, apartment complex gyud ni sila na puro korean families. naa pay mga batang gamay na singkit gyud kaau... diri sad sa cebu ga skwela ug kinder.

there was a jeepney for hire sad, i dunno pero theyre using jeepneys to transport tourists to some malls, sa sm ko ato kakita, i dunno if the jeepney was just hired para sa ilaha or if it is actually part of the service of the hotel. but these koreans.... abot dunggan ang ilang mga ngisi while on the jeepney, wasnt able to really take a good look kay nagdagan man sad ang akong gisakyan.

and a while ago, while going home from work, kita na sad kog groups of japanese sa may maria luisa, i dunno, padung siguro to sila sa nearby japanese grocery store. and of course, theyre on a mini tourist bus. kana bang murag van na smaller sa bus.

and have you read the news on the papers a few weeks ago, that now even the thais, malays, and viets are spying on the marketing strategy of philippine tourism.

Cardinal Vidal to retire

By Christian Esguerra
Inquirer

THE COUNTRY'S only active cardinal is set to retire on Tuesday.

Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, the Archbishop of Cebu, will reach the mandatory retirement age of 75.

By tradition, he is expected to submit a letter to the Vatican informing Pope Benedict XVI of his retirement. However, Vidal would have to stay on until a replacement has been appointed.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Sunday said it usually takes the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops eight to nine months to choose a replacement.

Vidal's retirement will leave the Philippine with no active cardinal.

Cebu plays major role in nat’l growth targets
By Jessica B. Natad
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

CEBU plays a major role in the achievement of the government’s Medium-Term Philippine Development Plan, according to economist Cayetano Paderanga.

He pointed out that the Institute for Development and Economic Analysis Inc. (Idea) foresees a robust economy for Cebu this year especially if the proposed projects in the province will push through.

Major projects

Paderanga, who also chairs Idea, cited data from the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) 7, which reveal that eight major projects have been pending approval since 2005.

These projects include the Center for International Trade and Expositions, completion of the Cebu South Coastal Road project, construction or improvement of roads connecting roll-on roll-off ports across provinces and regions, the construction of the Cebu North coastal road project and the upgrading of the Mactan Cebu International Airport.

Impossible

Paderanga said, during an economic briefing sponsored by the Bank of Commerce at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino last week, that the industries thriving in Cebu, such as tourism, information technology (IT) and shipping, make it impossible for the National Government to take the province for granted.

“Cebu is the international tourism hub (for) tourism and travel industries in the Visayas and Mindanao. It is the alternative site for industries to facilitate decentralization of progress and development as well as a major port of entry for international cargo vessels,” he said.

Cebu is also a known provider of globally competitive products and services such as tourism, business process out-sourcing, shipping, shipbuilding, electronics, fashion accessories, cottage industries, trading and food processing.

Exports

From January to October last year, Cebu accounted for some 5.45 percent of Central Visayas’ total exports.

The Central Visayas region is composed of the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Oriental Negros and Siquijor.

But Paderanga said Cebu’s share of the country’s total investment has been declining in the past few years.

Nevertheless, the Province still leads Subic and Clark investment areas, he added.

40% of total RP furniture exports come from Cebu - foundation

CEBU accounts for 40 percent of the country’s total furniture exports.

The Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation (CFIF) clarified reports that Cebu accounts for only 20 percent of the country’s overall furniture exports.

The foundation, citing data from the National Statistics Office and Bureau of Export Trade Promotions (BETP) in the third quarter of last year, said Cebu furniture exports amounted to $102 million.

Value

The country’s total furniture export is worth $259 million as of the third quarter last year, it added.

The value of Cebu furniture export already includes exports from the Mactan Economic Zone, CFIF said in a statement.

Based on the latest data from BETP, the Philippine furniture industry recorded a six percent increase in its export performance.

Cebu’s furniture export industry posted an increase of an average of two percent and has maintained its 40 percent contribution to the Philippine furniture exports in the past five years.

Markets

Sixty-eight percent of total Philippine furniture exports are shipped to the United States, which remains to be the country’s largest market for furniture and furnishings.

Other major markets for Philippine furniture include Japan, United Kingdom, France and Australia.

In 2004, total world export of furniture were worth $84 billion.

The Philippines ranked 36 in the list of furniture exporters with total exports amounting to $294 million.

City steps up efforts for ASEAN Summit
The Freeman 02/06/2006

Preparations for the holding of the 2006 ASEAN Summit this December have stepped up in Cebu City with funds for beautification projects already proposed this early.

One of these projects is the proposed landscaping of a miniature hill in Kawit Park, with close to P700,000 fund already been raised at the city council.

Councilors Nestor Archival, Arsenio Pacaña and Gabriel Leyson had proposed a joint resolution asking for P695,093 to cover the project's cost for labor, plants and other materials.

The Parks and Playgrounds Commission will undertake the project that will form part of the Kawit Park Development, and to beautify the city for tourism and events, with the ASEAN Summit among them.

Cebu City together with Cebu Province and the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu are the hosts of the ASEAN Summit, each of which has undertaken its own set of preparations.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña earlier said that more road repairs, streetlights installations and repainting of public structures will be done in preparation for the ASEAN Summit, adding that he already created a "cosmetic team that will take charge" of these projects.

The city will also establish an entertainment center for foreign journalists who will cover the event.

In last Wednesday's session, city's Department of Public Services new head Dionisio Gualiza told the council that one of his priorities is the beautification in the city, especially thoroughfares.

Gualiza also suggested to the council for an ordinance banning the setting up clotheslines at the front areas of houses, or placing banners and streamers on facades of houses.

"These are some of the plans I want to implement as newly appointed head of the DPS," Gualiza said. - Garry B. Lao

Ban speculators from SRP’
By GingGing A. Campaña
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña pledged to make sure the South Reclamation Project (SRP) will be teeming with economic activity and generate jobs, unlike the North Reclamation Project (NRP) whose owners “just sit and are happy to wait for the prices of their land to go high.”

But he also wanted to correct misconceptions that the SRP was created to be sold when there is still space in the North Reclamation Area.

“The north reclamation not vacant. It’s owned and these people are happy and just sit on it because the prices keep climbing very high. There’s no economic activity like that at the Mactan Export Zone. That’s why we have the SRP to create jobs,” Osmeña said.

“It’s sold out, only that the owners have a distorted sense that it’s an investment,” he added.

To avoid repeating this scenario, the mayor said City Hall will be selective and keep speculators away from the 295-hectare SRP.

“That’s why we are trying to lease to people who will not wait for the prices of their properties to go up. We want to put up a movie studio or a factory because there many who want to buy land,” he added.

Only P200

He estimated that lots in the North Reclamation now cost P10,000 to P12,000 per square meter. When this was first sold, it only cost P200 per square meter.

In 1963, lots in the area cost P100 per square meter.

When SM bought their property in the NRA, they paid about P1,000 per square meter, he added.

“Old investors bought it at P100, P300. My mother has a property which is worth much more. Minnie (his sister) has two lots. At that time, she bought it only at P10,000 per lot. Now, it’s worth maybe P10 million per lot,” he said.

The mayor, in a news conference last Feb. 1, narrated how the Marcos administration sequestered the NRP from the Cebu Development Corp., a group of investors led by his father, the late mayor Sergio Osmeña Jr.

Recovery

Over a thousand people invested their savings in the project but walked away with nothing, he said.

The Public Estates Authority (PEA) was created because of the NRP and later got involved with other reclamation projects, the mayor said.

“That was a big issue against me in 1988 when I first ran for mayor. The bombshell that (Bernardito) Dito Florido brought up, that I ran for mayor to get back at the PEA? I said that’s not true, although we have the right to get it back. The Lopezes got back ABS-CBN and all the other sequestered companies have been given back to their rightful owners,” he said.

“But one of the reasons I took it back from PEA was for the City, not for me. That’s why I was very aggressive in running after the PEA because they said they’re not even part of Cebu City,” Osmeña added.

Osmeña said he found it “very insulting” to the memory of his father, who has set aside a portion of the reclaimed area for a public market where SM is now, and a bus terminal.

When PEA brought in SM, the area was already a complex of roads and sidewalks.

“Henry Sy said he wanted the whole thing, the entire 12 hectares and PEA said, `Sure.’ There was a minor technicality because the roads were already donated to the City and the City Government complained. PEA made a deal with the City that was very one-sided. They’ll give the City one police car a year for four years kuno (they said),” Osmeña said.

Blocked

He described the deal as a “worthless package pegged at P44 million,” that PEA prepared for the City because the local government gave up six hectares for SM.

Apart from the police car, the package, in exchange for the six hectares, comprised of “a sewerage treatment plant that was overpriced by P6 million at that time, P19 million worth of streetlights, trees for the new City Hall that they never delivered, and a 2,000 square-meter property for a police precinct somewhere on Sergio Osmeña Blvd.”

In 1988, when Osmeña was already elected mayor, he told the outgoing City Council not to ratify the agreement between the executive department and PEA.

“I said, ‘Don’t do it. I’m already elected.’ I said, “Why don’t you let me handle it? No one voted for you anyway.’ The election was Jan. 18, 1988. My oath of office was Feb. 4 so I was already elected, but I was not yet mayor. But in between, they ratified the deal. I got very angry,” he said.

Osmeña then fought with PEA and pursued the rest of what was not sold in the NRP, which was almost four hectares.

Three hectares of these are what the City will swap with the Cebu Provincial Government this year.

Exchange

“In other words, what we are exchanging with the Province of Cebu is the property that Cebu City would not have gotten if it were not for me,” he said.

Osmeña said he negotiated with the PEA with his friend, now City Administrator Francisco Fernandez, beside him.

“PEA head then was Ed Zialcita, now congressman of Parañaque. He said, ‘O, Mayor Osmeña, congratulations! Why are you here?’ I told him and he said, ‘I’m sorry it’s a done deal. You cannot do anything about it because the council already ratified it.’ I said, ‘Yeah. I’ll sue you for estafa. You and the City Council because you sold property that does not belong to you,’” Osmeña said.

“Then I talked to Henry Sy, ‘Mr. Sy, I’m sorry you cannot build anything on that 12 hectares because I’m going to convert it into a park. You can’t even put a CR there. That’s my father’s gift to Cebu and I will not let anybody get that,’” he said.

Zialcita, Osmeña said, asked that they talk things over.

At that time, there was a map of the North Reclamation in Zialcita’s office indicating about four hectares still unsold.

“I said, `I’ll take this map with me. I want all of these. They gave it all to me, not to Tommy Osmeña. That was my first accomplishment as mayor that people did not realize,” Tomas said.

Aside from the four hectares, Cebu City got P500,000 in cash because “I wanted to prove to the old council that they made a lousy deal.”

I went to the City Council and said, “Beh!”

I didn't know Robinson's Land is the operator of Cebu Midtown Hotel! which happens to garner the highest occupancy rate in all Robinson's hotels in the country.

As we all know, Cebu never ran out of good news...
from an article published today:
"The company also reported average hotel occupancy rates of 72 percent for Holiday Inn Galleria Manila (HIGM), 80 percent for Cebu Midtown Hotel and 63 percent for Robinsons Apartelle Mandaluyong.

there are a lot of "family tourists" now in cebu, ambot diin ni silang lugara gikan! ug unsa gyud ilang gikabuangan sa cebu, hehehe, pero wen i was at sm a few days ago, there were caucasian famillies na nagsuroy suroy and its not the typical filipina wife caucasian husband thingy. i see korean families here in mactan sad, actually we have a neighbor, apartment complex gyud ni sila na puro korean families. naa pay mga batang gamay na singkit gyud kaau... diri sad sa cebu ga skwela ug kinder.

there was a jeepney for hire sad, i dunno pero theyre using jeepneys to transport tourists to some malls, sa sm ko ato kakita, i dunno if the jeepney was just hired para sa ilaha or if it is actually part of the service of the hotel. but these koreans.... abot dunggan ang ilang mga ngisi while on the jeepney, wasnt able to really take a good look kay nagdagan man sad ang akong gisakyan.

Thet's what I've observed bai... last Sat and gahapon I was in Sto. Niño church for several hours and I saw a lot of family tourists na nga di nimo makita sa una nya naapa man gani special child nga Korean.

IMO, bringing your whole family in that particular destination is a big risk and before they will do that, they will think hundred times and gather infos about the place if it's safe or verysafe for their family to have a vacation so this means Cebu is fast becoming a prefered safe destination and getting stronger in it's tourism industry that will rival Phuket, Bali, GUam, Saipan, Palau etc...

12 buses full of foreign tourists from 1pm to 4:30 pm visiting Magellan's Cross is unusual for Cebu but my father said that from Novermber last year, almost everyday daw ang mga dozens of buses nga mo dungo sa Magellan's Cross. Now I know ngano ganahan na sya mkig storya og tourism...

Daghan na kaayog mga foreign tourists nga mo bisita dihang dapita, the whole Philippines already knows that but if we compare sa una nga maka kita lang ko og mga duha or tulo ka mga shuttle buses kung mag standby ko atbang sa cityhall, now it's a brand new tourism scene in the area.

Good News: last saturday and sunday, I've observed that there are no badjao children anymore... pero naa nuoy ni puli, ang mga mananayaw og kandila pero mas nindot nuon kay pag sayaw sa tiguwang gitapukan siya sa mga europeans nya gi pic pic. Naa say mga hapon nga mga dagang babay, hapit nalang makita ang kunot, maka sala nalng nuon ta :D, naapay bata nga Koreano, naki duwa og pinoy nga bata, nindot sad tan awn...

JY Square IT Center Expansion Set

Cebu-based Jovima Management is putting up two more buildings in a property along Salinas Drive, Lahug, Cebu City, namely: JY Square IT Center II with total floor area of 6,750 square meters and JY Square Center III with total floor area of 9,100 square meters. Reported amounts of investment for JY Square II and III reach P79.7 million and P115.3 million, respectively.

These will add to the 8,800-square meter JY Square IT Center, which was proclaimed as an IT zone by the Malacanan presidential palace in January last year, entitling it to incentives like income tax holidays and exemption from the value-added tax.

Tourism department sees
rosy Japanese market
Published: 02 February 2006

by Regina Aguilar

The Department of Tourism (DOT) sees a comeback of the Japanese market this year as shown by the increasing number of Japanese tourists visiting the country.

Tourism assistant secretary Cynthia L. Carrion recently noted an increasing number of Japanese coming to popular diving spots in the Philippines.

"Japanese tourists are now very active in the country. Arrivals from Japan are catching up with Korea," Carrion told Cebu Daily News.

The Korean market for the past years has overtaken Japanese tourist arrivals, which used to top the country's tourism market chart.
Aside from the country's bad publicity, arrivals from Japan have also dropped with its recent economic slowdown.

With Japan's economy facing good prospects this year, Carrion is projecting an improvement in the Japanese market, which would help boost the country's tourism.

In fact, Carrion said, the DOT is coming up with a marketing strategy that would focus on the Japanese market.

DOT has also increased by 15 percent its target arrivals from Japan this year, Carrion said.

A new book on Philippine diving, which is written in Japanese, would also help boost interest in the various dive spots in the Philippines, among Japanese tourists, she said.

The DOT recently launched in Cebu the book "Philippine Diving: The Ultimate Guide" written in Japanese.

It features famous diving spots in the Visayas, which includes Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and Apo Island.

Carrion said the guide book would help entice more Japanese, who are very much interested in diving.

"The Philippines is very beautiful. Foreign tourists only need to know more about our country," Carrion said.

The book, she said, would be distributed by the country's attaches worldwide.

Carrion also revealed that guidebook written in Korean and Mandarin were also scheduled to be launched soon.

Although the Koreans already rank as the country's top market, Carrion said the Philippines still needs to get a bigger chunk of Korea's outbound travelers.

The Chinese market, on the other hand, also needs to be strengthened.

Carrion is hoping that the upcoming Mandarin book would boost arrivals from China, which processes 600 visas a day for Chinese travelers who would like to come to the Philippines.

Moreover, she said that aside from the Japanese market, the DOT is also focusing on the US market, which is composed mostly of balikbayans.

This year's target for the US market is 25 percent, Carrion said.

To achieve this, the DOT is planning to conduct a Grand Pinoy Reunion this year to attract balikbayans to come home for a vacation and boost tourism in the country.

On the other hand, Carrion noted that Cebu could not take advantage of the growing Chinese market because of the absence of direct flights from China.

The potential of the China market is quite huge, but Cebu's tourism industry faces a number of constraints, including the lack of resort rooms.

However, the proposed construction, within the year, of a 700-room resort in Mactan by a Korean investor is expected to alleviate the shortage of hotel rooms.

A 700-room resort in Mactan? Anybody knows about this if this is a high-rise?

^^ all i know is its made up of 6 towers but i dunno if they are highrises.. parklane international hotel is18/20-storey high and it has 200+ rooms.. so i guess the proposed resort will have towers between 8-10 storeys high..

i notice kita mga cebuanos have so much pride of our island. we even advertise it in the general photography section haha. not thats its bad.. :D

Mandaue biz group backs convention center

The Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (MCCI) has expressed strong support for the construction of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), formerly the mega-dome, in Mandaue City.

According to MCCI president Eric Mendoza, the existence of a convention center gives a positive sign to the rest of the world that Cebu is ready to host any international event, especially the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nation) Summit in December this year.

He also stressed, in a statement, that Mandaue City is the “best” site for the CICC.

Prominence

Mendoza said MCCI hopes that with the existence of the CICC, Cebu will gain prominence as a primary destination for conventions, trade shows and events, which will generate significant economic benefits.

The CICC, which will be built on a 4.3-hectare lot at the reclamation area, is a strategic location because of its proximity to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and international seaport and its accessibility to the general public due to the availability of public transportation.

Proximity

Its proximity to other business establishments, such as hotels, malls, and other tourist destinations, is also a factor that helps ensure a positive result of the construction of the CICC to Cebu’s economy.

MCCI also expects the convention center to help boost employment not only in Cebu but also in other neighboring provinces.

Mendoza said the CICC is a good venue for the promotion of local business activities, community-based organizations and regional events, which attract investors and serve local residents

Meanwhile, MCCI gained an accreditation as a non-government organization from the Provincial Government of Cebu during the 44th Regular Session.

Business month activities to focus on tourism, ICT

The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. is preparing for the holding of the Cebu Business Month (CBM) this May and June.

On its 11th year, organizers of the CBM will continue to promote opportunities for trade and industry in Cebu, through shows, exhibits, trade fairs, conferences, relevant industry summits, tourism prospects, sports events, fellowship activities and others.

The theme for this year’s CBM is “Invest Cebu” and it will be chaired by Wilson Ng, president of Ng Khai Development Corporation.

Cebu Business Month is known to be an effective crowd-drawer not only for local entrepreneurs but also for international business.

It has accorded a big boost to the region’s eco-nomy.

Haven

“Invest Cebu” aims to launch “Cebu” as an investment haven in the country.

It will also promote Cebu as a destination for tourism and information and communications technology in the Philippines, as well as globally.

Competitiveness

It also strengthens the role of small and medium enterprises in enhancing Cebu’s global competitiveness and encourages stronger linkages among major stakeholders in making Cebu a competitive global player.

Likewise, “Invest Cebu” aims to acquire major learnings from global players in order to improve Cebu’s competitiveness.

Manila's reputation is already bad and it has already rooted, bisag unsaon pa nilag pasinaw sa ilang dan, lisod na kaayo nga ma usab ilang reputaion kay that's the face of Manila na...
But ang Cebu, it's the other way around... Cebu's reputation is lined with famous and successful places in the world so bisag unsaon pa nilag daot ang Cebu di jud sila kabuhat ana kay sa giingon lang ni @whoelsebut "pulling cebu down will only push them to go even higher" kay those who loves and likes Cebu very much will defend Cebu bisag unsa pay mahitabo... with those people pulling Cebu by mentioning those eyesores of our city, our officials will take note of that and fix it and show to them back the place that it has changed from an eyesore to an eyecatching site... I've done that many times like those stagnant water along Magellans Cross, I forwarded it to DYAB and instantly Vice Mayor called the radio station and acted upon our requests and now it's already clean.

If they have critisized us, they shouldn't worry coz our local officials will fix it for them that will make Cebu shinier and even fly higher :okay:

now, dili sad ingon nga bilib na kaayo ta sa atong kaugalingon but we see it that the people here are trying hard and attributed kaayo sa Cebu's achievements, pariha nato, IMO we have done a lot for our CEBU ;)

With regards to PEX, I guess it started with the way the title was phrased > "Filipinos in Luzon, take a look at your southern neighbor Cebu.." It should have been Filipinos in Luzon, Visit Cebu.."

The first title was misleading, it could either have two meanings - that Filipinos in Luzon are downgrading Visayans, or Visayans downgrading the ones in Luzon..

Upon reading the title alone, I even thought that Dom of PEX was criticizing Cebu.. It was the opposite pala, he was promoting Cebu! So obviously, some forumers in Luzon would react in the same way that we too react if ever bad things are hurled against us..

Oh and also, I think it would not be appropraite to retaliate by bombarding the thread with photos of Cebu since it will only make matters worst. It would just justify their delusional thoughts -- that Cebuanos are hambog, etc..etc..etc..

After all, the best measure of progress is objectivity and not subjectivity. And everyone knows objectively what our place is all about.

Yes of course but then again that doesn't mean that we have to go down to their level. We're far more civilized than these kind of people you know so I don't think they would even be worth our time and effort.

The more one reacts to them the more it gives them a hint that one is "pikon." And the more they would enjoy to continue posting to see what your next reaction would be. You know, these guys just want attention. After all, like what a fellow poster from Luzon said, "Do not generalize on us because not all Tagalogs are like that..." They're just a pigment in a bottomless pit. If you have carefully read some of the lines there, there were actually forumers from Luzon who like our place so much. There was even this guy who said that back in his place all that he sees are black white sand beaches while here it's white. There was also this another guy who criticized too much politics in the capital and even said that "we should follow Cebu's example.." And to add more, there were even these Luzon guys who reprimanded the troublemakers. Just like in any other threads (Bacolod-Iloilo-Cebu, Davao-Cebu, etc.) there is actually a balance unless of course if one rides on to their (the troublemakers) kind of music.

Anyhow, they're entitled to their own opinions about Cebu in as much as we are too with regards to Manila and other places. After all, these comments don't change any good image about Cebu. Most of the people here in the country and even abroad knows what Cebu is. Tell that to the Japs and the Kimchis, they even know better than them. And like what you said, the more they criticize our city the more it shines and moves forward.

I don't know bai if Lucio Tan owns Allied Bank. That forumer from istorya.net just mentioned about the proposed VisMin headquarters of Allied Bank that is going to be a highrise and would be built at the old Pepsi Co. lot in Mabolo. And rusty18 corroborated it by saying that his source actually met with Lucio Tan and told him about his plan to build a 55-storey Allied Bank building in Mabolo.

1 mo.- old bldg. on Banilad now houses several tenants

A few months after its completion in December last year, The Forum has already attracted several tenants despite competition in the area.

The building, located on Archbishop Reyes St., houses China Trust Bank, Asian Spirit ticketing office, Body and Sole Spa, Ceilo Italian restaurant-bar, an Internet Café, Revoir beauty salon and Kenya Café, among others.

This development, despite the mushrooming of buildings in the Banilad area, shows increasing business activity along Banilad.

The Forum, a 1,000-square meter commercial complex is owned and developed by Jo Realty Corp., the owner of Ultra Vistarama and Seven Arts theater.

Jo Realty Corp. president Mike Jo said the company has invested some P30 million for the construction of the three-storey establishment, which accepts a variety of tenants such as leisure, food and beverage.

He said the company owns the 5, 000-square meter lot, where The Forum stands. Some 4,000-square meter are still available for future projects.

Jo revealed that future tourism related developments within its property are now on the drawing board

2020 Olympics to be hosted by the Philippines? That's not a problem!

By that time the Philippines would already have a modern sports center either in Clark Field, or in Cebu SRP, or in any other viable place!

Let's hope too that by that time we are already a newly industrialized country (NIC) with developed status..

Here's an article way back 1996. It's still applicable up to now.

#8 CEBU: Business with a Pleasure

The all-year summer sun is out but a breeze rustles through mango trees dotting hills that roll into the sea. Another day in Cebu, central Philippines. "The pace is more leisurely here," says Mayor Alvin Garcia whose life is witness to this. One day he might be meeting with investment bankers about a new $19-million city government bond offering, settling a dispute with market vendors, and talking with property developers about new projects. The same day Garcia, 50, might also take a break from city hall at noon, hit the fairways of the Cebu Country Club, and go back to his desk by 5 pm.

Twice a week, he and his vice-mayor, Renato Osmea (both 17 handicappers), make it a point to join friends for a round of golf. Japanese tourists also enjoy Cebu's three courses, flying in just to play. Even with plane fare and hotels it is still much cheaper than doing a full 18 holes at home. And compared with Manila, green fees and other club costs are about 30% lower. Tourists also come for the beaches of this small island (250 km long and 45 km at its widest). Over 50 resorts, from five-star to one-hut operations, are about 30 minutes to three hours drive from the city.

But don't let the diversions make you think Cebu is all frivolity and frolic. The land that killed the explorer Ferdinand Magellan and repulsed his soldiers in 1521 welcomed many ethnic Chinese business people -- and has prospered because of it. Called "Ce-boom" for its unrelenting double-digit growth, the city is a centuries-old bastion of entrepreneurship. No less than seven leading Filipino Chinese tycoons, including Lucio Tan, Henry Sy and John Gokongwei, spent their boyhood in Cebu.

Sophisticated balancing scales found by Magellan's crew prompted his chronicler Pigafetta to write about how "scrupulous these people are in their dealings." Today, traders still come in from neighboring islands. The strategic location makes Cebu an ideal hub for commerce and transportation. Most of the major national shipping lines are headquartered there, and at least 56 international flights serve the city.

An industrial zone near the international airport on nearby Mactan island hosts some 120 companies including the likes of NEC, camera manufacturer Asahi Pentax and international furniture label Maitland-Smith. On top of prosperity, Cebu offers streets with much less crime than Manila's. The semi-governmental Cebu Investment Promotions Center handles enquiries from prospective investors. Its letterhead features a little tiger on the corner with the words: "Next in Asia." It's about time.

Cebu City to spend P3M
on Charter Day celebration
Published: 08 February 2006

To prove to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that Cebu can host the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in December, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said Tuesday the city would spend P3 million for its Charter Day celebration.
Osmeña's announcement contradicted earlier statements he made that the city would mark its 69th Charter Day on February 24 without much fanfare in an effort to cut expenditures and save for the hosting of the ASEAN meet.

The mayor said the Charter Day celebration would be a “dress rehearsal” of Cebu City's hosting of the summit.

He clarified, however, that the celebration on February 24 would only be a repeat of the grand finale of the Sinulog Festival, which Arroyo did not witness.

Once the President sees the way Cebu City celebrates its Charter Day, she will no longer change her mind about the province's hosting of the ASEAN summit, despite pressure from Manila officials, Osmeña said.
Aside from President Arroyo, boxing champion Manny Pacquiao will also be invited to the celebration and will be asked to sing his hit single “Para Sa 'Yo (This is for you).”

“Have you heard his song? I think it's cute,” Osmeña said during his regular press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Other notable guests include Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal and former Supreme Court chief justice Hilario Davide Jr.

Earlier, Osmeña said he was planning a simple celebration, such as a banquet for city hall employees, awardees and some guests, to commemorate Cebu City's founding anniversary.

On Tuesday, Osmeña said the Charter Day celebration would be a good excuse for the city to spend P3 million on a dress rehearsal for a production to be presented at the ASEAN Summit in December.

“It's just for the Charter Day itself. I don't care (if it's expensive). The Charter Day is a good excuse to do a dress rehearsal. It will be cost effective for us,” the mayor said.

Part of the P3-million budget would be used to pay directors, and rent equipment and costumes for the performers.

Osmeña's target - to produce a television special by bringing in Manila-based television director Freddie Santos.

The management of Bigfoot Film Entertainment will help produce the show at the Abellana Sports Complex — for free, Osmeña said.

The highlight of the show will be dance numbers to be performed by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Cebu City First Lady Margot Osmeña.

“This is a preparation, a practice of what we are going to do in the ASEAN Summit. We will demonstrate to the President that we're very serious in playing a major role in the summit,” Mayor Osmeña said.

“If the President has qualms about transferring it (summit) to Manila, that's our way of saying to her 'Don't do that, don't change your mind.' We're locking it up now.” /Reporter Kathy I. Navarro

Lucio Tan and my gandpa are good friends :D when i was a lil kid, my momma used to tell stories during their childhood days before bedtime :) she said Lucio and my grandpa used to play on rice fields together in a northern town in cebu. our ancestors are from china. when lucio moved to the city, my grandpa was stucked in the probinsya then became a town mayor for 20 years.

remember the source i told you about the allied bank tower? lucio tan and my relatives had small talks one time in my grandpa's house. my mom shared to me that lucio tan wanted to build the country's tallest building (55-storey Allied Bank Tower) in Mabolo, the old Pepsi Co. lot. but then the 1997 asian crisis came and all those stuff. but it really excites me hearing that proposal again! i hope it's going to be still the tallest building even it doesn't sound realistic no more :D hehe

if Olympics will be held in the Philippines, i think Cebu is more capable of hosting it than Manila.

Manila has to spend billions just to have a complete "make-over". and Manila needs to reduce air pollution significantly just as Beijing is required to do. Cebu, on the other hand, is not as polluted as Manila and it's already beautiful a city.

Cebu can pull off an Olympics better than Manila.

Jo revealed that future tourism related developments within its property are now on the drawing board.

Lapu-Lapu grooming for ASEAN summit
The Freeman 02/09/2006

The grooming of Lapu-Lapu City for the coming ASEAN summit in December is beginning.

The national government has just allocated P126 million for the expansion of some roads in the city. These roads include the one that stretches from the Petron gasoline station in barangay Basak to the Marigondon causeway where Plantation Bay is located, and the stretch of road from the Mactan Shrine to Coral Point Hotel in Punta Engano where Shangri-la Hotel and the Hilton Hotel are located. In total, the roads have a net length of 4.22 kilometers.

These hotels would host 12 out of the 22 heads of state and their entourage during the summit.

City council majority floor leader Alley Berdin endorsed a resolution yesterday authorizing Mayor Arturo Radaza to turn over these local roads to the national government.

Berdin said the Department of Public Works and Highways could not proceed with the expansion work unless the roads are turned over to the national government.

The project would affect several houses.

"This is advantageous to the city government because we will no longer appropriate certain amount for the maintenance of these roads which we used to do. The city government will not spend anything for this," Berdin said.

Radaza, in his letter to the members of the city council, said that since Lapu-Lapu City would be one of the hosts to the summit, it is imperative that it prepares all the necessary programs and activities to ensure the successful holding of such an important event.

Radaza said that the city government is also working on a tight budget for the improvement of other local roads and highways. -Mitchelle P. Calipayan

WiMax for Metro Cebu

http://www.ngkhai.net/cebu/wp-images/WiMax.gif

The latest wireless technology which is the fodder of wireless communication conversations today is WiMax. WiMAX is an acronym that stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, and according to Wikipedia, a certification mark for products that pass conformity and interoperability tests for the IEEE 802.16 standards.

Products that pass the conformity tests for WiMAX are capable of forming wireless connections between them to permit the carrying of internet packet data. It is similar to WiFi in concept, but has certain improvements that are aimed at improving performance and should permit usage over much greater distances.

IEEE 802.16 is working group number 16 of IEEE 802, specializing in point-to-multipoint broadband wireless access.

A foreign-owned entity once suggested to the city government via Mayor Tomas Osmena to cover Metro Cebu with WiMax. I don’t exactly know how did it progress but that’s what I heard or read from the media over a year ago. And the mayor seemed excited about the idea. If it happens, Metro Cebu will join a few other cities in the world to have a city-wide WiMax Metrowide Area Network or WiMAN. When will it happen? It remains to be seen.

Currently certain areas in Cebu City are covered with WiFi hotspots wherein a person with a wireless-enabled computer or personal digital assistant (PDA) to connect to the Internet when in proximity of an access point. The geographical region covered by one or several access points is called a hotspot. For example, the entire Fuente Osmena area is a WiFi hotspot. You can virtually surf the net wirelessly on your laptop or PDA while sipping your espresso at an outdoor cafe or inside the building within the area.

With WiMax, you don’t have to go to Fuente Osmena or certain other hotspots to connect to the internet. The moment you turn your computer on at home, it searches for the nearest tower which can provide transmission to a very large area, up to (take your breathe) 3,000 square miles! Although only a bit faster than WiFi. The big difference (I mean very big) here is its range of coverage. In contrast, a WiFi can cover up to 100 feet (30 meters) only.

The WiMax system consists of two parts - the WiMax tower and the WiMax receiver. The WiMax tower transmits signals directly to the receiver or antenna of your WiMax-enabled computers or laptops. A receiver is either installed in your computer or your PDA or a small box installed somewhere. Just like cell-phone communication, WiMax uses radio signals, only stronger with higher frequency that one WiMax transmitter can blanket a radius of 30 miles (50 kilometers), that is approximately covering the entire Metro Cebu area including as far south as Naga and as far north as Liloan and most of the Mactan islands and parts of Balamban and Toledo City. That’s what we call a true wireless internet communication!

The Resurgence of Japan as Cebu’s Top Tourist Market

Japanese tourists used to be the lords of the tourist arrivals chart for many years until Koreans dislodged them two years ago. Blame it on bad publicities the country get such as the kidnappings of foreigners in the southern part of the Philippines and political squabbles that discouraged many Japanese travellers from visiting the country. The travel ban issued by its government also resulted to the decrease of the Japanese visitors to the Philippines.

Although sidelined for two years as Cebu’s second biggest tourist market, the Japanese arrivals in the previous year saw a sign of decent growth following the lifting of travel ban and the improving economy of Japan. Seeing the Japanese poised to take the top spot back it had lost to Koreans, the Department of Tourism 7 is coming up with strategy that would focus on the Japanese market alone.

One such strategy is the printing and publication of a guide book that would only cater to Japanese tourists. The book, aptly titled ‘Philippine Diving: The Ultimate Guide’ was printed and published in Japanese with more emphasis on the diving grounds of the country, the Visayas islands that include Apo Island, Siquijor, Bohol, and Cebu.

The book aims to entice the large population of Japanese diving enthusiasts who come for leisure and enjoy the underwater marine ecosystem of the country.

Dive Fair at Ayala Center Cebu

http://www.ngkhai.net/cebu/wp-images/moalboal11.jpg

Cebu is a premier tourist destination in the country with its world-class tourist attractions in its more than a hundred islands and islets in the heart of the Visayas Islands. Some of its prime attractions are its numerous dive spots that rank as one of the world’s best making it the country’s top dive destination.

Being the center of scuba diving in the country, Cebu is the natural choice to hold the largest and first dive fair in the Philippines. Dubbed as “Plan Ur Dive, Dive Ur Plan,” this four-day event that starts today at the Ayala Center Cebu is a strategic move to promote not only the scuba diving in the country but also promote the country itself as the best dive destination in Asia.

Central Visayas islands, to which Cebu belongs, boast some of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. The Apo Island of Negros and Pescador Island of Cebu are among the country’s prime dive spots. The marine ecosystem around Pescador Island, in particular, has been hailed as the world’s most diverse giving way to numerous scientific studies conducted by marine biologists and scientists from around the world.

Other popular dive spots in Cebu include Badian Island, Sunken Island, Lambug Reef, White Beach all in Moalboal-Badian area to which Pescador Island is also part of. In the northeastern waters of Cebu, famous dive spots include Alegre House Reef, Capitancillo Island, Calanggaman Island, Kimod Island, Gato Island, Quatro Islas and Tulang Island. Around Mactan islands, great dive sites include House Reef, Agus Reef, Tambuli Reef, Marigondon Cave, and Tingo Shark Point.

Preservation of our marine resources is part of the event’s goal the organizers want to convey to visitors and participants alike. It is a growing awareness among local and international communities today that holding such event would somehow help us think about the importance of marine life to us, who, in one way or another, derive food from it and other vital resources essential to our existence.

The event is organized by scuba diving industry whose members include dive shops and dive centers across the country in cooperation with the Department of Tourism (DOT), Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA), and Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving.

topic: thailand or the philippines??

I've been to both and here are a couple of observations:

1. The prices are generally the same in both countries for food and hotels.
The Philippines might be just a bit more, but not too much.

2. Thailand is a lot more exotic/strange/mytic because of the budhist influence. You'll see a lot of wats (temples) and monks and statues of Buddah.

3. Both have beautiful beaches

4. The Philippines speak better English. In fact, it's a very nice break from Korea mentally/emotionally because everything is written in English. They also speak Tagalog, but really, it's a lot closer to being home than Thailand is.

5. If you want to do snorkeling/scuba, I'd go to the Philippines.

6. If you want to party, I'd go to Thailand.

7. I want to go back to both countries. They are both really great places to visit. You'll have a great time in either place.

Stretch of Gov. Cuenco Ave. declared as No Fault Zone

The Freeman 02/10/2006

The Cebu City council has agreed to declare the area bound by Gov. Cuenco Avenue, from Paradise Village all the way to Banilad as a "No Fault Zone", but has also agreed to prohibit the City Traffic Operations Management from placing a "No Fault Zone" sign in the area so as not to confuse motorists.

A no fault zone is an area wherein all traffic laws and regulations -like no parking, no stopping, no U-turns- will be enforced due to the normally heavy traffic of that area.

But some council members were thinking some people might take a sign the wrong way and think that whatever traffic violation happens there it will not be their fault.

"What do you mean by a no fault zone? Does it mean that when you bump someone and because it is a no fault zone you are not at fault?" councilor Jocelyn Pesquera asked.

It took the council 20 minutes to fully define, understand and approve the no fault zone declaration.

The committee on police, fire, penology and public safety headed by Procopio Fernandez last Wednesday recommended the approval to address the worsening traffic condition of the place while councilors Rodrigo Abellanosa and Edgardo Labella said the "no fault" rule should not be confined to one place or area.

The committee was supported by all four members - Sylvan Jakosalem, Raul Alcoseba, Gerardo Carillo and Augustus Pe Jr. - Garry B. Lao

MTIAPI looks to Cebu as the next data transcription hub

First posted 10:43pm (Mla time) Feb 09, 2006
By Alexander Villafania
INQ7.net

The Medical Transcription Industry Association of the Philippines Inc. (MTIAPI) will be conducting a data transcription conference in Cebu City as a follow up to the upcoming e-Services Philippines Inc. (ESP) 2006.
The former will focus on getting Cebu’s IT firms to start promoting data transcription, a new fast-growing outsourcing business in the country.

The data transcription conference will be held at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel on February 20, three days after ESP 2006 in Mandaluyong City.

Among its speakers will be the president of the US-based Medical Transcription Industry Alliance, Sean Carroll, who will speak on how Filipino firms can expand market reach and leverage on the growing demand for transcription services in the US.

She will be followed by SPI Healthcare Documentation COO David Woodrow who will discuss promotional strategies local firms can employ to sell their services.

MTIAPI president Evelyn Abat said the thrust is to establish the Department of Trade and Industry’s regional ICT program for the Philippines’ regions to build their own ICT industries and provide IT-enabled assistance to other regions.

Abat said the data transcription business is one of the newest IT-enabled outsource services in a list of established services like animation, software development, contact centers, and engineering design.

“At present, we have only tapped one percent of the 25 billion US dollar market in the US for medical transcription services. If we plan to take on more of this market, and explore other geographical locations as well, we must build local capability and learn how to market ourselves to the rest of the world,” Abat said.

CH invites bidders to P66.6M legislative bldg. repair works

CEBU City Hall is now inviting contractors to bid for the first phase renovation of the old legislative building next month.

The project’s approved budget contract for the first phase is pegged at P66.6 million, which will be taken from the local development funds for 2003 and 2004, and the third supplemental budget for 2003.

According to a paid invitation to bid published in a local daily last Wednesday, the contract covers the supply of labor and materials for the general requirements, earthworks and demolition, concrete works, steel reinforcement, steel decking, structural steel, roof and roof framing system, masonry works, doors and windows, plumbing works, electrical works and structured cabling, fire protection and mechanical works.

The General Services Office will accept letters of intent from prospective bidders and issue eligibility forms until Feb. 22.

120 days

The issuance of bid documents will be on Feb. 28. Site inspection is set on March 1. The pre-bidding conference will be on March 3 and the receipt and opening of bids will be on March 17.

The winning bidder is expected to complete the project within 120 days from receipt of the notice to commence from Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

The City Council approved last December the program of works and estimates for the P72.7-million project, three years after the legislative department planned its renovation.

The council conceived the project in 2002 and solicited the help of the University of San Carlos-Institute of Planning and Design, which received P2.15 million from the Cebu City Government as “financial aid” for the drafting of plans and design.

The old City Hall building was built in 1948 and finished in 1950. Considered as a landmark, it has “remained to date as the City’s most symbolic seat of power,” the council said.

layout

According to the layout, the City Council office will be at the fourth floor, while the chapel will be at the third floor.

All councilors, including ex-officio members, will each have an office with separate cubicles for their respective staff members.

There will be four committee rooms aside from conference rooms.

There will also be a pre-session room aside from the session hall, where the gallery is positioned behind the councilors’ chairs.

Currently, the galleries are at the councilors’ sides, providing a good view of their faces and their expressions as they deliberate on measures presented on the floor. (GAC)
