As Hilton bid goodbye to Cebu and The Philippines. Another first came to Cebu and The Philippines, welcome Movenpick!

I am hoping that the Hilton brand will come back to the Philippines and it will choose Cebu again! I never had the chance to check in for a night but I had the chance to dine in. It's one of the hotel in Cebu that I am very proud of because it's the only one in the country and it is in Cebu. I hope that they will really come back.

Is there any building that is under construction that deserves the Hilton brand?

dili man bro. the mere fact that San Beda is not from Cebu unya reputable school siya maayo na! kung tanawon pud nimo ang mga colleges dinhi, wala sila nagoffer og LAW. so kung naa ang San Beda, maski college lang na pero competitive kaayo ilang Law with Ateneo, La Salle and UP that are universities and also with excellent LAW schools!!!! :okay:

and sige lang, ayaw lang kabalaka apil man gyud na ang CIM. ako ra man gibutang ang San Beda coz its not from Cebu.

nag ilis na diay ang sacred heart school-jesuit ug pangalan?

yes sir but that's what im asking, lahi ba ang Ateneo sa SRP og ang Ateneo de Cebu - Sacred Heart School? tanaw nako, i-merge na silang duha. i dunno pa.

theyre still a benedictine college with a solid academic reputation. ok ra man siguro kay wala pa man siguro benedictine run school or college sa cebu. ang santo nino agustinian, ang san jose recolletos, ang san carlos svd, stc icm, inmaculada, rvm. sacred heart jesuit

dili man bro. kung tanawon nimo ang mga colleges sa Cebu, wala sila nagoffer og LAW. so kung naa ang San Beda, maski college lang na pero competitive kaayo ilang law sa Ateneo og UP that are both universities!!!! :okay:

ang CIM, lahi man pud na kay medical man pero ang naginusarang university in the country that ONLY offers medical courses is CDU ra man. so naa ra sa Cebu ang medical university! :okay:

but we are talking about Universities here... Bisag naa pa na siyay Law as long as dili na siya University, dili gyud na siya linya as University.:okay:
so sa imong list title nga 11 Universities, duha ra ang soon, Ateneo de Cebu University og Centro Escolar University Cebu... wa'y labot ang San Beda kay dili mana University kaha...

Pareha gud sa CIT sa una nga college pa na pero mo ingon na ganig reputable Universities in Cebu, wala gyud na sa lista ang CIT kay University raman ang gi sturyaan  For me, CIM is as ngilngig gihapon as San Beda tungod sa performance whatever courses offered...

Wohoo!!!... One of the Movenpick Hotel branches is Burj Dubai Hotel-apartments and Jumeirah Beach ... Grabeh now i know that Movenpick is one of the premier luxury hotels in the world ... IMO mas sosyal pah ang movenpick compare sa other hotel brands basing in america like sheraton, shangrila and hilton...

Movenpick is rated as the fastest growing hotel chain in middle east, preferably the most enjoyable upscale hotel in the world... we all know basta swiss based hotel they are the best in the world ...

to Movenpick welcome to the cebu..:cheers: enjoy the truly cebuano warm hospitality at its best:okay:

Movenpick is rated as the fastest growing hotel chain in middle east, preferably the most enjoyable upscale hotel in the world... we all know basta swiss based hotel they are the best in the world ...

to Movenpick welcome to the cebu..:cheers: enjoy the truly cebuano warm hospitality at its best:okay:

if thats d case, then its a good thing din pala na may change of management. i dont wanna say good riddance tlga, hu knows hilton will be back with its own hotel facility tlga diba, but as one article said nga, its a win win situation for both parties.

because of d content of her song. no need to indicate places in the phils. she is just saying dat she is proud to be a filipina and what a filipina is. just like apl.de.ap of blackeyed peas. proud pinoy and proud to be from angeles but he had never included angeles city or panpanga in any of his songs.

Gwen leads new Metro Cebu development board
By Carmel Loise Matus
Cebu Daily News
First Posted 08:50:00 04/02/2011
Posted on: http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/news/view/20110402-328912/Gwen-leads-new-Metro-Cebu-development-board

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama signed on. So did Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez and mayors of several towns.

But yesterday’s signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) creating the Metro Cebu Development Coordination Board led by Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia had its noticeable absences.

Mandaue Mayor Jonas Cortes and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza didn’t show up.

The signing at the Cebu Provincial Capitol was attended by business, law enforcement and national government representatives led by Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo.

Governor Garcia will serve as ex-officio chairman of the new board with a co-chairman to be elected from among the city and municipal mayors and another co-chairman from the private sector members.

According to the MOA, the MCDCB will oversee the implementation of development strategies, policies and standards in 10 areas of common concern. These are urban planning, traffic management, waste management, flood control, drainage, security, infrastructure development, urban renewal and shelter, coastal and watershed management, health and sanitation and climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

“This does not mean that the autonomy of the LGU would be compromised,”said Garcia.

“In fact, it is in recognition of the capability of the LGU to reach out and work with other LGUs.”

Radaza of Lapu-Lapu City told Cebu Daily News she was not at the signing because she had to speak at several graduation rites. She did not send a representative.

Mayor Cortes also said he had a schedule conflict. He had no representative there either. Nevertheless, Garcia said she was encouraged by the support of the mayors especially Rama.

Cebu City Rep. Tomas Osmeña in a separate interview said Rama’s signing of the the MOA had “no authority from the Cebu City Council.”

He said joining the group is unfair to Cebu City because the biggest city in the island would be “controlled” by a board headed by the governor.

Osmeña said he was apprehensive that the board would “interfere” in the affairs of Cebu City like traffic management.

The MCDCB will draw and administer funds and resources from member local governments.

Officers shall serve for three years coterminus with local officials. The National Economic Development Authority in Central Visayas will act as board secretariat until a technical support staff is established.

Garcia said she will call the board’s first meeting next month.

Robredo in a speech shared how he hurdled many challenges while pushing for the creation of Metro Naga in Camarines Sur province.

Metro Naga is made up of 14 towns and cities including Naga City, where Robredo was mayor for six years./with reports from correspondent jhunnex napallacan and jucell marie p. cuyos

bro i think u can. coz some of my friends na froyo before were able to upgrade it to gingerbread. pero they were talking about root root something. the only gingerbread functionality i was able to install is yung key board :D now i just dont know how from froyo to honeycomb. wala koy kalibutan unsaon :P and if d pwede i-upgrade, wouldnt that be a downside sa android phones considering na they keep on upgrading the os tapos pag may bago pala wala tayong choice but to get stuck with the older versions? diba wrong marketing strategy :D also, i hope may OTA upgrade nga this summer like what rusty said. We have same o.s by the way.

Anyway nakakainis yang parating pagchange ng os nila..lols.. lets go back to CEBU. :)

Dayon naa mosayagit sa amoa around 7-8 am........ BASURA.. MALATA!!!!
Then people would hurriedly bring their garbage na MALATA...

Then at about 9 or 10 AM.. BASURA... DI MALATA!!!

Kadto dili makaapas sa tawag.. then wait the next day..
And based on my assessment....... epektibo jud sya.. kay nawala nato mga basura na magpundok sa dalan.. everyday.... As you see.. wala namo makita sa Mandaue na mga basura magtapok sa dalan...

And its good.. Mayor Jonas Cortes.. already made a legacy by instilling political will to effect this policy. :)

Dont worry.. its only temporary slerz.. as i said just like in Mandaue.. when it was enforced by Mayor Jonas.. ingon ana gihapon ang scene.. but later on.. people will adapt and policies will be strictly enforced.. it will become a way of life....

and people will have no choice but to abide by the new policy as time goes by...

^^nah, I'm not worrying. I know it will be addressed soon coz as what I've said earlier that Mayor Rama has the character man diay nga "gahi" or lisod suphon so that scene will only be temporary. I'm just following what is happening in the city from time to time so that others from abroad can also follow.

Talking about garbage/rubbish segregation.

There are a lot of models that we can follow from first world countries or modify it to fit Cebu.

Here in NZ, people needs to buy a counsel bag(size=sack of rice) for 3NZD for their rubbish or you can rent a counsel rubbish bin(size=2 sacks of rice) for 100NZD per year. This counsel bag and bin are for people who don't want to segregate their rubbish. So, if Cebuanos does not want to segregate their rubbish then let them buy a counsel bag or rent a counsel bin at the grocery stores. Kiwi's told me that the payments for the counsel bag and bin are for the the people who will separate their rubbish at the landfill or garbage site.

Fair enough, right?

Harvard study finds that Filipinos are the world’s most gullible people

As Pinoys fall for the acid rain hoax, a study finds that Filipinos are gullible.

OMAHA — According to a study released by the Harvard Institute of Socio-Political Progression (HIS-PP), the Philippines ranks first among the world’s most gullible races.

The study involved content analyses of over 500,000 historical documents from 300 different societies. The documents were then evaluated according to a quantitative metric called the Gump Index.

“Each instance of gullibility in a people’s ancient and historical records has corresponding points in the Gump Index. These points are co-related with the lifespan of the society and its average educational attainment,” said Dr. Samuel Sean Dawson of HIS-PP.

Filipinos scored 1,344,399 points, placing it first, ahead of the Trojans of 12th Century BC, who scored 1,086. “The gross Trojan Gump Index was higher than Filipinos’, but it was offset by the fact that the Trojans are a dead civilization,” said Dawson.

According to the report, examples of Filipino gullibility include:

* “Sandugo” or the blood compacts between Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and Datu Sikatuna, and Ferdinand Magellan and Raja Humabon — ploys which led to the brutal Spanish colonization of the Philippines, but are still celebrated by Filipinos as a sign of friendship;
* The continuing belief that circumcision is common practice in Christianity;
* The Mock Battle of Manila Bay;
* Popular belief that Agapito Flores invented the fluorescent bulb;
* Popular belief that Eduardo San Juan invented the moon buggy;
* Popular belief that an ophidian humanoid resides in a Manila shopping mall.

“What’s curios about the Filipino condition is that despite a respectable literacy rate, many of its people still believe that condoms cause cancer — or that Appolo Quilboloy, CEO of Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name, Inc. is the son of God,” said Dawson.

According to the study, the causes of this gullibility include the inability to question information and an over-reliance on interpersonal sources. “For Filipinos, a tsunami warning from the government does less than a mother’s directive to avoid the sea because of syokoys (mermen),” it notes.

HIS-PP is also looking into genetic and biological factors. The organization is currently experimenting with the live brains of volunteer patients, and will release their findings next year.

“539 of our subjects are Filipino. It was very easy to get them. All we had to do is post a listing at POEA that said ‘Teachers Wanted’,” said Dr. Dawson. Mosquito Press

Hahaha. Although there is some truth about this, I find it difficult to believe that you can actually create a "ranking" of gullibility. There is a very very large room for arbitrariness even if they create a scale to explain their point system. For one, i don't know how one gullible moment can be pitted against the value of another. Secondly, they are looking at historical documents which are not in themselves the absolute truths and the authors wrote them from their own perspectives, and different countries have also had different levels of historical documentation. Mutuo gyud ko nga tuotuohon ang mga Pinoy but ilaha ra pod giexaggerate. Liman ka mas mutuo pa daw ta ug syokoy kaysa tsunami warning from the government? Are we that gullible to accept that?

Lastly lisod kaayo irepresent ug gullibility for a while country. Kay naa may gAmay nga part sa population nituo na dayon ang tanan pinas? If thats the case, I wonder how the USA ranks there. And do they count severely harmful and damaging gullibility with very large impacts on the world the same as another harmless and trifle one? Believing in agapito Flores vs voting for Bush and his decision to preempt Iraq and waging a war based on their findings of weapons of mass destruction which were never found?

sadly, there seems to be some truth in this. just the case of our heroes and
holidays/events depicting battles at war. who was the hero of tirad pass?
when is the fall of bataan? and many other where we celebrate the times
when we lost? x*!!x??! come to think of it, the only time we ever won in a
battle against foreign aggressors was at the battle of mactan where lapu-
lapu killed the first tourist :)

speaking of which, we did win in that battle right? lapu-lapu won over and
killed magellan, the foreign aggressor.

this is how we honor magellan, the foreign aggressor ... with a huge park,
shrine and monument ...

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w5zmQN20EOc/THYmpRbuKII/AAAAAAAAEU0/g4YKfdrwmhs/s1600/cebu+battle+of+mactan+shrine+mural.jpg

then we just place a small monument of lapu-lapu OUTSIDE of that shrine!

magduda lang ta kung kinsa jud ang nigaug atung gubata!

beh, ask lang ko ninyo, asa man ang mas taas, mas lapad, mas importante,
ug mas ilado --> Magallanes St. o Lapu-lapu St.?

mao na'ng mo-ingon lang na'ng uban nato, "pag-chur mo oi!" i just came from
south korea - tanan nilang dagkong monuments ug sculture, and pag-daug
man nila'y gi-depict ... and ato mura man ug bali?

Poverty - vote buying is the cause.
Low job availability and rate of pay mean "low"/bakya entertainment value like SRP and Fuente Osmena event. It is a time well spent rather than nag-ligid-ligid lang sa lantay ug ka-ot sa kim#t ug dili ba magbuhat ug kaliwat.

It's a combination of gullibility and curiosity. A lot of people tend to want to see what they shouldn't want to see,

Look at Skyscrapercity Forum Stats. The Philippines beats North America's posting 1.9 million to 1.4 million posting and more than half of South America.
We even have a dedicated thread box !!!
We must have less than 10% access to internet at home?
That's shows our dedication, to be very sociable... our brains are always challenging

My salute to this guy! And of course, to the Cebu Provincial Government... :)

Ex-inmate fights adversity, graduates with honors at the Cebu Normal University (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/local-news/2011/04/03/ex-inmate-fights-adversity-graduates-honors-cebu-normal-university-148417)

HIS life story may have been lifted from the plot of a telenovela.

Wrongly accused of rape and imprisoned for more than four years, Bryan Fernandez decided to go back to college after his release.

Post your online prayers for Japan earthquake victims

Last March 21, the 27-year-old native of Dumanjug, Cebu graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education at the Cebu Normal University.

“Na-challenge hinuon ko, ug ang akong pagkapriso naka-inspire sa ako (I was challenged by my ordeal and my experience inside the jail inspired me to finish my education),” he said.

After graduation, he went alone to Gov. Gwen Garcia’s office, carrying his folded toga inside a worn-out paper bag, to express his gratitude.

Why choose him, a former prisoner of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC), as one of the Capitol’s scholars?

Inspiration

“Because his story is an inspiration, despite the kind of life he was dealt with,” the governor said.

Garcia later posed for a picture with Fernandez, who put on his rented toga for the occasion.

“When he was finally released, he decided to pick up the pieces of his life and go back to school,” she said afterwards.

In his meeting with Garcia, Fernandez managed to squeak out a “thank you,” lightly shake the governor’s hand and smile coyly.

“Thank you is just a word, but until I die naa na ‘na sa ako (I’ll be eternally grateful),” said Fernandez, lightly pounding his chest, as he was leaving the Capitol to go across the road for an interview with Sugbo TV.

Fernandez was a second year student at CNU in 2002 when, on March 1, during final examination, he was hauled into jail.

Inside the CPDRC, he learned about respect, humility, patience, aside from making soap.

Over time, he was appointed health aide, given administrative work and became the overall vice chairman of the religious committee.

When asked if he was a member of BC (Batang Cebu) 45, a closely knit organization of prisoners here in Cebu, he nodded.

He was released on Dec. 3, 2006, after his case was dismissed because his alleged victim failed to appear.

Mistaken identity

“It was purely a case of mistaken identity,” he said.

His problem did not end there. He had no money to go back to college, as his mother was just a “tigbantay og bata sa silingan (nanny).”

Being an illegitimate child, without a father to support him, he wrote the governor asking for financial support, without expecting an answer.

“Ako pa’y tagdon ni guv nga maldito pa jud ko, ug kadaghan pay tabangan ni guv (Of all the people the governor would want to help, I thought I would be the last on her list),” he said, admitting he didn’t write down a return address on his letter.

So he was surprised when he got a letter from the CPDRC, who had his records, asking him to report to the facility.

Apparently, the governor’s office had spent three months looking for him.

It was Sunday when he headed to the CPDRC, a bit anxious on why they wanted to see him.

When he got there, he was told to report to the governor’s office the next day.

And that was the start of the new chapter of his life.

He returned to school in June 2008, with a scholarship that covered his full tuition and money for uniform from second year to fourth year college.

On his first day back at school, one of the professors asked him why he left school.
It took him a few seconds to tell them what happened to him.

While narrating his experience, he heard someone crying at the back of the class.

After that, he gained the respect of his classmates and teachers and did not encounter any discrimination.

"The Cebuano lifestyle is so cool. I wonder how I can become like you guys," My good friend Polo remarked 2 weeks ago. "Can you teach me?"
Because it came from someone who was born and raised in Manila, I was taken aback by what he said. I cracked up, but I really found it incredibly endearing. (Most of the Tagalogs I've met, save for those close to me and a few good eggs, have been condescending after they found out I'm bisaya. Case in point: "Oh my god, you're from Cebu! Do you have like, electricity there?"

Incidentally, I was with a couple of awesome Cebuanos this weekend for a photo shoot (in film!) by Kate for the equally awesome site ZeroThreeTwo (please watch out for it; the shots here are just outtakes). We were putting together a feature on how growing up in the Queen City of the South has influenced where they want to go in life, and I remembered Polo's request.

With nothing but my upbringing and musings (plus loads of political incorrectness) in tow, I decided to make a crash course on how to be a Cebuano convert. Game?

1. You fell from Lapu-Lapu's loins. It's your duty to protect your heritage. Ever since one of the greatest heroes of all time (in dudespeak he's up there with Chuck Norris. There, I said it.) battled against the Spaniards in 1521, the same instinct to safeguard your land and culture has been passed from one generation to the next. You belong to an extremely territorial people. If somebody offended you, all of you will reflexively, rabidly rise up in arms. Just ask Gloria Diaz about how she felt being a persona non grata in Cebu last year. Wild.

2. No matter where you zoom around in the world, you must remember that you are a flagbearer of Cebu. You'll always be proud of your roots and of your fellow Cebuanos. (Except when you're part of Cueshe. Don't know this abomination of a band? Good. Don't bother to look them up.) You will show support to well made local products, especially when it comes to nurturing businesses. Why do you think Bo's Coffee Club is just as full when setting up shop a few meters away from Starbucks here? Only in Cebu.

3. You respect other provinces, but you believe Cebu is still the best. Call it a superiority complex, but they'll lose any argument if they'll try to lock horns with you over this. Cebu simply trumps any place else (peace).

4. Your blood is running with raw talent, and your standards are high. From fashion, academics, sports, food, literature, business, photography, music, the arts--you're brilliant at any of these, and you constantly raise the bar for yourself.

"Wow, I'm so glad I met you guys, I just love this," Carla commented on Sunday afternoon. I couldn't help but agree; they were a very charged bunch. Carla's just starting out with her jewelry line, Alahas but she has such a cohesive direction for her collections already. Bien and Fabs own Aframe, a clothing line for surfers that's become an institution. Kate's work is just gorgeous. Film photography is such a beautiful art form, she's one of the small number who are trying to save it.

Pao's a chef extraordinaire (swing by Zao Resto Grill on Abellana St.) and Mikel's a freshly minted lawyer who probably is one of the insanely funniest people to talk to.

At skaters' park, we were surrounded by people who were exploding with so much energy too. Good vibes all around.
Wondering what caught their eyes?

Four words: taya these guys bai.

5. Tagalog pala ka? Speak to us in English instead please. Because of how our dialect is constructed, we grew up with hard tongues, terribly incompatible with how Filipino is spoken. You will learn to hate how having to struggle with it places you on the spot. You'd rather switch to English because it's just easier. And once you hear someone say "ang barok niya, bisaya kasi," let them take cover (see items 1 and 2). There's one thing you will detest the most though: bisayas who knowingly shift to Filipino when conversing with fellow bisayas just because they want to show off. Treason!

6. Being laidback is ingrained in your soul. Whether in ocean swells or concrete pavements, you don't rush. You make sure you get there, but you want to enjoy the ride too.

And if you hit wipeouts, scratches and tears?

You laugh it off.

Ingana ang tinuod na Cebuano, payter.

Convergys to open 4th facility in Cebu City (http://ph.news.yahoo.com/convergys-open-4th-facility-cebu-city-20110402-084241-677.html)
Manila Bulletin - Sat, Apr 2, 2011

MANILA, Philippines - Convergys Corporation, the largest private employer in the Philippines, announced that it would expand again, with a fourth state-of-the-art facility in Cebu City. The announcement comes just weeks after Convergys revealed it has a new contact center currently under construction in the country's summer capital, Baguio City.

Located in the Asiatown IT Park, the new facility being announced today is at the TGU Tower. Once the Convergys site is operational, the company will operate 15 facilities throughout the country - eight in Metro Manila, four in Cebu City, and one each in Bacolod City, Santa Rosa, Laguna, and Baguio City.

"The largest BPO provider in Cebu City and in the Philippines is getting even bigger," said Marife Zamora, Philippines Country Manager and Managing Director, Asia Pac/EMEA for Convergys. "Our continued growth is due to the extraordinary support provided by our employees in Cebu and throughout the Philippines to our major international clients. This type of unrivaled service is why our clients continue to specifically request the Philippines as the location for their critical customer support operations and why we continue to meet and exceed our client's expectations every day."

Convergys employees in the Philippines receive hundreds of thousands of customer service calls each day on behalf of global clients representing a wide variety of industries, including financial services, telecommunications, retail, e-Commerce, direct response, and health care.

Since beginning operations in the country in 2003, Convergys in the Philippines has been honored many times for its customer service excellence, its talented employees, its expertise, and its leadership.

Last year, Convergys won the "BPO Company of the Year" award at the International ICT Awards and was also inducted into the Philippine Economic Zone Authority Hall of Fame after winning both the Outstanding Employer and Outstanding Exporter three times in each category.

Convergys believes in investing in the development of its people. Rather than have one set path, Convergys has a variety of career tracks for employees to explore. Having a talented, motivated workforce maximizes Convergys' productivity and enhances the quality of service we offer all of our clients and their customers. This is another way Convergys ensures its spot as a global leader in relationship management.

As the largest private employer in the Philippines, Convergys continues to hire as new work continues flowing into the country.

then we just place a small monument of lapu-lapu OUTSIDE of that shrine!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w5zmQN20EOc/THYmp7XZQTI/AAAAAAAAEVE/v9r3VuwpRpA/s1600/cebu+battle+of+mactan+shrine+lapu-lapu+monument.jpg

magduda lang ta kung kinsa jud ang nigaug atung gubata!

beh, ask lang ko ninyo, asa man ang mas taas, mas lapad, mas importante,
ug mas ilado --> Magallanes St. o Lapu-lapu St.?

mao na'ng mo-ingon lang na'ng uban nato, "pag-chur mo oi!" i just came from
south korea - tanan nilang dagkong monuments ug sculture, and pag-daug
man nila'y gi-depict ... and ato mura man ug bali?

... just an observation

do the people in the capital still not want Lapu Lapu's statue in luneta? i mean, if so, we can always take it and install it along one of our city's many grand avenues...i reckon it's a gift from the ROK and i can't help but compare it to the statue of Admiral Yi (even the pose looks very similar) occupying a place of honour in their capital city's main thoroughfare...so, how about this, we either restore the roundabout in the intersection of Jones and the Nat'l Highway and place Lapu Lapu there? or, we could also remove that non-functional time-piece in front of Fuente (and convert the adjacent overpass to the an underpass for an unobstructed vista) to make room for the statue...

its good to hear...

so if there is no projects for Cebu 2011... can we expect in 2012?
I just cant understand why there is no ready projects for Cebu when Cebu is in dire need to rehabilitate roads... ( example N Bacalso, A Soriano Ave, even the Colon junction, the NRA Roads, the Drainage systems) is this another LGU Failure?

Sad :ohno:

Yeah bay Henz you're precisely right. There's really a need to widen all of metropolitan cebu's road network to ease traffic congestion and also to construct enough sidewalks since our sidewalks are so deteriorated. Our city planning is quite poor:ohno:, there's a need for overhaul.

this real life story made me teary eyed as i read this article. im deeply touched by his ordeal. yet he managed to turn his world around by going back to school. with the help of the governor's office.

if you have the extra money, send someone in need to school. it does have a positive feeling in you when they graduate and make a difference in their life.

I sent few of my relatives to school...All of them graduated on time and got married even before they make use of their diplomas or even help their own families.

I just wanted to see them improve their lives with education. But I failed.

It's really wrong to help people who do not have the desire to improve.

nah, let's not go into that argument!

right! it will simply be english and probably Tagalog so that the whole country would watch! a Cebu-based TV network whose HQ is in Cebu aired in Tagalog!!!! :okay: hire media practicioners who are well-versed in Tagalog and Cebuano coz obviously when you do news reporting and interviews with ordinary Cebuanos, its always in Cebuano (so just provide translations) but when delivering news reports to the country, do it English or Tagalog. diba one-of-a-kind!!! :D

In the visayas area there should be bisaya or cebuano version that our old and probinsyano folks can understand. Just like gma and abs before that they had cebuano versions of soap operas which we can really appreciate because it's all local talents. I can still remember watching "si goat the wonderful" before it's awesome and funny to watch our Local talents doing their part to please bisayan people.

I won't really lament over Hilton's departure because a European hotelier will replace it. Movenpick may not be as famous as Hilton, but Movenpick is upscale European (Swiss). The world's best hoteliers and restaurateurs are Swiss.

The City of Cebu is rapidly becoming a city that can stand up and be proud of itself before the world. The growth of several modern towers, influx of investment, and development of many modern, world-class districts in the city are testimonies to this. In fact, in several ways, Cebu has eclipsed Manila, the country's capital.

With all these changes however, Downtown Cebu, the oldest part of this historic city, and i daresay, the nursery where the seeds of all this development were first planted and nurtured from many centuries past, is in a state of neglect and disrepair. How many proud Cebuanos are there who would show the narrow, congested, and shabby streets of Downtown Cebu to a visiting foreigner? Won't they rather show the visitors the shiny new buildings and modern super-malls, and pretend that the old city does not exist?

Now that Cebu is inching ever closer to the center stage, let us not forget where this great journey in city building began, and together, driven by dreams and visions for an ever greater city, let us restore our downtown area to make it worthy of the name 'Cebu'

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/207625_10150140964163644_672713643_6766043_1602941_n.jpg

This diagram, if that's what i can call it, is a map of Downtown Cebu, indicating certain points and areas that could use redevelopment, and includes pictures of buildings and places from other world cities, showing how it would look like in my vision for a revitalized downtown area.

A - Freedom Park - a large public square that would serve as the city's living room and center for culture. it would be host to various events and celebrations that would showcase and promote the development of Cebuano arts and culture.

B - The Cebu Museum - a modern museum complex right in the heart of the city. one wing would hold a museum of natural history, while another would be home to a gallery of classical and contemporary art. the centerpiece however would be a gallery housing exhibits on Cebuano history and culture, and a great hall where statues and portraits of great Cebuanos will be enshrined.

C - The Mall - a large rectangular plaza adjacent to Freedom Park, akin to, but a smaller version of Washington DC's National Mall; it would be unique in the world due to the fact that it would have a large underground complex, which would be the new site of the present Carbon Market, the city's largest marketplace.

D - Humabon's Palace - a large, modern building made of glass and steel; it would incorporate various designs taken from Southeast-Asian architecture, and archeologists' and architects' concepts of what Rajah Humabon's Palace might have looked like, and will be built in Pasil District, the traditional site of the ancient village of Sugbo. This building would function as a convention center and a center for performing arts.

E - Pahina River Park - its waters have once sustained the ancestors of the Cebuanos, and its currents have shaped our culture; thus, it is but fitting to give this stream the dignity and honor it deserves by transforming it into a world-class park.

F - Sugbo Village - a modern recreation of the village of Sugbo, to complement the nearby Humabon Palace; it would be a revitalized Pasil, where residents would have top-notch dwellings, and an area for tourists to shop and learn about traditional Cebuano culture.

G - Lapu Lapu Monument - dedicated to the greatest Cebuano hero, it would occupy a place of honor at the eastern end of The Mall.

H - Compania Maritima Terminal - Downtown Cebu's main transit terminal, housed in a restored colonial period building; it would be the main downtown station for the city's transit system, and would be linked to a future terminal for the commuter ferry to Mactan Island and Cordova

Overheard from a businessman in the café while eating my lunch is that the reason why Hilton pulled out their Cebu management is because Hilton Cebu was not able to live up to the standards of Hilton, mostly in terms of the "quality" of the building itself.

...also, if you have read sa mga comments sa travel websites, ubay-ubay sab ang ni-comment nga something like: "this place (set-up) not fit for a Hilton brand" ...mostly, wala naka-feel sa Hilton brand particularly those long staying guests and world jet setters...i wonder if the size of the property would be as big and as nice as Shangri-la, perhaps, Hilton is staying for good in Cebu siguro..

I won't really lament over Hilton's departure because a European hotelier will replace it. Movenpick may not be as famous as Hilton, but Movenpick is upscale European (Swiss). The world's best hoteliers and restaurateurs are Swiss.

^^sir mas.upscale ang mga swiss-based hoteliers, compare sa mga american hotel brands such as hilton, shangrila and sheratons... samut na sir na swiss-based pajud ang mudumala sa former hilton, they have the best hospitalities and amenities in the world...

all Hilton Worldwide resorts are huge and sprawling based on the brochures I got when I stayed there twice. most of them do have golf courses and offer a wide selection of activities. ang nakabentaha lang sa Hilton Mactan before was that it was Hilton's tallest property in the Asia-Pacific mao ra but when it comes to services, amenities, etc. lupigon siya sa uban. :okay:

H - Compania Maritima Terminal - Downtown Cebu's main transit terminal, housed in a restored colonial period building; it would be the main downtown station for the city's transit system, and would be linked to a future terminal for the commuter ferry to Mactan Island and Cordova

an online blog...

Cebuano Ka? Please Define.

Didn't get what the last bit meant? Go back to step 1. Repeat. No worries bai, way blima, you'll get the hang of it soon.

Brave the waves,

MIA

CCCI to help Capitol improve roads (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=673194&publicationSubCategoryId=107)
By Gregg M. Rubio/WAB (The Freeman) Updated April 05, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - Some members of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry whose businesses will be affected by the proposed load limit in the provincial roads offered to help the Capitol in upgrading the roads.

CCCI President Samual Chioson met with Governor Gwendolyn Garcia to discuss solutions that will be acceptable to both parties.

Chioson said some of their members who have businesses located in certain localities outside Cebu City will be affected by the 10-ton load limit in the provincial roads. The areas are Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela, Danao City, Minglanilla, Naga, Sibonga, San Fernando, Cordova, Balamban, Talisay City, Carcar City, Toledo City, Alcoy and Argao.

Garcia said some of these areas have no provincial roads. She asked Chioson to identify in particular what are the companies and which particular sections of provincial roads are being used by them.

Did you know, that Lapu-Lapu Monument in Luneta is so hated by the people there they sometimes tag it derisively as the "Bisaya monument"

This is not true. Please be careful in giving your views without solid evidence. In fact, if you go to that Lapu lapu statue, so many people pose for souvenirs and it is really imposing and tall. You would hear people commenting that "ah ganyan pala itsura ni Lapu Lapu", mukhang Chinese?, etc. etc. but not about hatred man....

Beautiful....I guess only few Cebuanos saw this monument in Luneta. Check the place and see this great Cebuano hero.

Maybe it's all about the issue before when Lapu Lapu statue being planned in Luneta by Sen. Gordon, former DOT Sec. That time, marami ang umangal coz if its significance... the park is Rizal Park our national hero but why put Lapu Lapu na di naman Lapu Lapu Park ang pangalan ng park, it's Rizal park.

It's not about people in Manila hates Lapu Lapu but its the significance of the statue in Rizal Park. Controversy by only a few politicos. But the Tagalogs seeing the giant statue, made them proud of who we are, that we Fillipinos are strong enough to defend our mother land :okay:

Actually, some of Luzon politicians or historians want the other national heroes from Luzon to be put also in Luneta. If a giant statue is put in that area, that is significant. Naunahan lang talaga sila ni Lapu Lapu. :) There are statues of other national heroes in Luneta but only their heads. Not as big as Rizal and Lapu Lapu with full body images.

Most of the people here in Metro Manila who came to see the statue for the first time are amazed seeing a giant statue of a person they only heard in song (that Yoyoy Villame song! I forgot the title ) and read in history books.

Who knows, Lapu lapu statue would be one of popular tourist spots in Metro Manila? Does he look Chinese? This is a recent photo.

It wasn't baseless. I have met some people from Manila who explicitly expressed their loath of this monument for its being Visayan even in front me, without knowing that I'm Cebuano.

Well, maybe it was just their personal opinion. I apologize for generalizing.

Artifacts, remains dating back to 1000 BC found in Cebu (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/lifestyle/04/05/11/artifacts-remains-dating-back-1000-bc-found-cebu)

MANILA, Philippines - Archaeologists have unearthed human remains and artifacts, some of which could date back to 1,000 to 500 BC, in a town in Cebu.

These were uncovered outside a church in the town of San Remigio. Almost all human remains were found facing east, save for one whose head is attached to the other, looking at the opposite direction.

Also found were pots and pieces of metal, which led archeologists to believe that the artifacts and remains belonged to the Metal Age.

Archeologists from the United States, Japan, Laos and other countries will be arriving in Cebu to study the artifacts found in the province.

Meanwhile, the human remains will be brought to Guam for examination. --

Pottery dating back to Metal Age found in Cebu town
4/5/2011

A TEAM of archaeologists from the University of San Carlos (USC) and the National Museum unearthed ancient pottery they believed to be dated back to the Philippine Metal Age at the grounds of the parish church in San Remigio town, Cebu.

In a press statement, the university said the expedition led by Prof. Jobers Bersales and Dr. Ame Garong of the National Museum discovered the earthenware pottery in three burials off the grounds of the San Remigio Parish after 10 days of test excavations.

The team also includes 15 archaeology students from USC.

They said the pottery's designs bore resemblance to other finds in the country that were dated in the Philippine Metal Age period, between A.D. 900 and 500 B.C.

The team said this may mark the first time that a Metal Age site was uncovered in Cebu.

Other significant finds include a large Philippine Melon shell (Melo diadema) crafted into some kind of scoop and plenty of red-slip pottery fragments.

Another excavation unit on the municipal beach right across the church has also yielded a midden or trash full of broken pottery, shells and clay net sinkers.

Prof. Bersales and Dr. Garong said they believe the site to have burials that at least date to about 1,000 to 2,000 years ago.

But they cautioned that only radiocarbon dating of some bone samples in the United States may provide the absolute date for the site.

They said the absence of Chinese and other Asian tradeware ceramics also helped provide a date much older than those found in Boljoon as well as Plaza Independencia.

Bersales said the site appears unlooted and is certain to provide important information on the culture of Cebuanos before the arrival of Asian and Arab traders.

The USC-National Museum team will continue to conduct excavations until April 16. They will return to the site on June 4 with a joint team from USC, University of Guam and the University of the Philippines.

Funding for the excavations was provided through a grant from the University of San Carlos with logistical support from the Cebu provincial government.

I beg your pardon but according to the markers surrounding it, this ain't Lapu Lapu or Kaplipulaku, but Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat or Sultan Kudarat--the sultan of Maguindanao. Basically, it was neither Visayan nor Cebuano in origin. An issue here is that SK was a figure of separatist movement in Mindanao--although I guess this topic deserves to be on another thread or something. Anyway, just an FYI. :)

Thanks.

In Cebu perhaps? But that was what the marker has said. Looks like because we do not have an existing photo on how Lapu2x looks like, our mind assumes unconsciously that it is Lapu-Lapu, probably because of the popular depiction of the famous statue in Mactan and perhaps due to Datu Puti. A lot of us don't even know why Hamabar/Humabon (the one who ruled Cebu) looks a bit chubby as compared to the action-figure like Lapu-Lapu in Plaza Hamabar.

I think Lapu-Lapu is somewhere here...along with Leon Kilat in Luneta in the bust of the heroes...

Lapu-lapu statue unveiled finally (http://www.mb.com.ph/node/156141)

CEBU CITY – Lapu-lapu City officials led by Mayor Arturo Radaza have extended their gratitude to the people who build the statue of Lapu-lapu at Rizal Park in Manila.

The Lapu-Lapu officials attended the recent ceremony for the unveiling of the statue in Luneta. They said that the statue will bring pride to Cebu, particularly their city.

"I extend my deep gratitude to the people who build this statue in memory of a great Cebuano leaders," Mayor Radaza said.

The unveiling took place despite the objections by the National Historical Institute.

Former Department of Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon, who brought up the idea of putting a Lapu-lapu statue in Rizal Park, led the unveiling ceremony together with officials from Cebu and South Korea.

.....
Juan Sajid Imao, the statue's sculptor and a 2001 TOYM awardee for the arts, further noted, "The statue shows Lapu-Lapu as strong and peace loving but at the same time ready to defend himself against those who trample on his cherished freedom."

Lam mo Slerz, if you want to continue this discussion, I suggest that we take this to the right thread, no? ;) And sure, I'll do it. I'm just wondering why did they replaced the name from Lapu-Lapu to Kudarat in Luneta. It's better to talk to the National Parks of DOT regarding this matter, rather than Gordon, since they are the ones managing Luneta.

Then I'll give you their answer why they have changed it.

If you are right, then you are right. If I am wrong, then I'll acknowledge your position and stand corrected.

"The Battle of Mactan" commemoration this April 27, 2011...

Expect for a modern street dancing for this month’s celebration of the victory of Lapu-Lapu against the Spaniards led by Ferdinand Magellan.

Known as the Kadaugan sa Mactan, which is celebrated yearly in Lapu-Lapu City, the street dancing this year will highlight a samba dance, which is a Brazilian dance of African origin with a basic pattern of step-close-step-close and characterized by a dip and spring upward at each beat of the music.

“It will be an exciting way to revamp the usual celebration of the Kadaugan sa Mactan,” Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza said.

Radaza said the change in the Kadaugan Street Party (KSP) aims to entice more visitors and tourists to witness the cultural aspect of the celebration with a modern twist.

She said the reenactment of the battle of Mactan, which should be celebrated not only by Lapu-Lapu City but also all Filipinos all over the world, expected to draw in around 10,000 crowd.

With contigents from the different barangays of Lapu-Lapu City including other districts in Cebu, the streets of ML Quezon Highway from the old bridge to the new bridge will be closed during the street party.

Aside from street dancing celebration, which will be held on April 30, the city will also feature live bands, Volkswagen car show, car audio bass contest, tricycle contest, a tour on resorts and hotels and a showcase of local food and products.

Regarding that debated statue in Luneta, ingon ni Dora Go Dong Hei (Eugene Domingo), "I'll get back to you on that, I'll look into it, I'll give you an update." ;)

^^ That article was from 2004. Let's check 2011 and see if there were differences.

Do we agree on that? When is your deadline? ;)

If its true that they have changed the statue from Lapu-Lapu to Sultan Kudarat.. then it is a blatant affront to the whole Cebuanos. They could have changed it quietly.

I just hope Bernie is wrong.

I havent been to that place though but will try to visit once i will be back in Manila.^^

Thanks.

Mas Nindot paman ang statue ni Lapu lapu didto sa manila Kaysa Cebu ..Cebu or Lapu lapu should a have a grand statue with a world Class Park In Lapu lapu ..

Nasaan si Lapu Lapu! :dunno:

Guys, I went there in early 2009 and it was Lapu Lapu.....Well, I also recall several news reports that the statue is Lapu Lapu.

Bernie: If it was changed to Sultan Kudarat, how come it was not reported in the media? That statue was donated by South Korea.

^^

right! South Korea gave it to us and why would they ever changed Lapu-Lapu to Sultan Kudurat? were the koreans who built it informed about the changes?

and why would they change it to sultan kudarat? what were the MAJOR contributions of sultan kudarat in our nation's history to merit such a magnificent and grand statue?

Extremly good shot SleMarKen ! Thanks for sharing. :)
I wonder when that Hongkong Hotel will be finished......

May I suggest another shot from that point of view with a wide angle lens ? You then could combine both shots into one. Hope you don´t mind my suggestions.
