pirting saktoha..

Cebu is a premier city pero kuwang kaayo ug sports facilities. wa man gani tarong nga Coliseum.

ang purpose sa pagtukod ug stadium or coliseum di man para gyud sa sports sports tourism ra kundi para man sa pag provide ug maayo ug presentable nga venue kay pakauwaw lang ang Cebu layo ra kaayo sa uban nga mga smaller cities ra when it comes to venues.

ug kinsay nagsulti nga ang taga Cebu way hilig ug Soccer? wa lang mo kahibaw pirting daghanag adik ug soccer anha magtapok sa SanRoque ug nakuha siguro na ang financial aid sa FIFA through the efforts of the Aboitizes kay perti ana nila hiliga ug soccer.

ug unsa may sayop kung maka gather ug tourists through sports? :ohno:

mao tinuod jud ni wa jud tay tarong og decent nga venue for sporting and other events... but about the tourism sa sugbo di man ta angay magsunod sunod og kinahanglan jud mogama pod tag sport tourism facility, daghan kayo tag mapakita as an island oi.. ang problema lang is ang pagpreserve, pag-maintain, pagpalimpyo, pagpatarong sa atong mga tourist spots... naa tuod tay nindot and significant historical landmarks pero perti pod gubota og hugawa, or wala matarong og landscape, og mura rag bukot bukot tan-awon...may gani ron nasugdan na ni rama ang pagpanindot sa plaza independencia (pero ambot og nindot ba jud kaha nga murag duna may dakong hawan pwede mahimong basketball court ang tunga:lol:)...pero the rest of the historical and natural spots kinahanglan pa jud og proper preservation ang cleaning up og pag organize labi nas toilets, park designs, parking, proper garbage disposal... kaning plaza sugbo o uga kaayo, dako kayog nagasto pero way ayo nindot pang plaza sa Argao... naa poy Lapu lapu shrine nindot tuod ang park pero ang palibot sa park gubot kayong parking abog og gip-ot naa pay mga blay balay squatter kayo tan-awon, discomfort kaayo sa mga tourists... na tuod tay mga nindot nga Resorts sa mactan pero inig gawas nimos gate sa mga resort gakamuritsing lang agi, lubak lubak og kung ting-uwan lapok kaayo, huot pa kayong dalan nya mga tindahan pidpid kayo sa dalan makasamot sa traffic og huot sa pamati, dili relaxing ang dalan sa OPON!!!!! nya ang mga foreign tourist igo ra baya na sila mostay for sleep, dine and relaxation sa hotel resort, apan the rest of their activities are outside the resort baya and experiencing the natural environment and the local community... naa pay sights sa mga bata nga makilimos nga mamugos og pangayo sa mga turista, magsunod sunod... daghan pa kaayo tag tarongonon sa Cebu labi nas Metro Cebu particularly kaning MACTAN og mandaue apil Cebu city!!! more clean parks and open spaces and proper/clean sidewalks and streets, well-preserved historical and natural heritage, open public beach, the implementation of proper easement along all bodies of water, greener mountains, well-planned and studied nga zoning and land-use, proper garbage disposal etc. etc... then Cebu will beat them all!!!!!!

ug unsa may sayop kung maka gather ug tourists through sports? :ohno:

^^ tinuod. sakto. wala may sayop mag attract pud og tourists through sports. sa akong tanaw dili man pud na siya sunod2x sa ubang dapit. dili pud na pangpangawat sa ubang lugar nga mao ray gisaligan sukwahi sa pagtuo sa uban siguro dinhi. isip usa ka progresibong syudad, kanindot na man lang kung naa tay ingon ana nga facility og usa pud, hinatag ra pud sa pribadong sector and at no cost to the government. kung muingon ta nga dili ta kinahanglan maghimo ana para mutaas lang atong tourism potential, tinuod dili kay daghan na tag gipasigarbo, pero kung musubay lang kita sa issue regarding that football village, dili man kwarta sa katawhan ang gamiton pagpatukod ana, gikan man na sa pribadong pundo and once matukod na, natural ang sugbo ang magatiman ana so naa nato kung unsaon nato pagatiman ug paggamit ang maong facility. now, kung unsa man gani mga activities na pwede maplanuhan diha puhon, ang Cebu may mabulahan og mao na nay USA SA MAKAPADUNGAG sa kalambuan sa turismo sa sugbo coz activities means participation and attraction but let me reiterate once more, THE CORE ATTRACTIONS MUST BE PRESERVE, IMPROVE AND PUSH EVEN MORE. WE DON'T SAY EXCHANGE IT, WE JUST ADD ATTRACTIONS. :okay::cheers::okay:

yes, we may still be among the top places when it comes to domestic tourism but other provinces are slowly catching up. a lot of people have already seen our beaches, waterfalls, sinulog, etc.. we need to have something different, we need to offer something different. good thing mr king opened the skyadventure rides, its something unique... camsur has the CWC, and they were able to utilize it well by holding numerous extreme sports competition that attracts a lot of international tourists. why cant we use this gift from FIFA/PFF and hold football invitationals by inviting other amateur (highschool, college, homeless, etc) football clubs from the ASEAN region? something like a "Cebu International Football Open"..

we might not see the urgent need now, but it doesnt hurt to lay down and prepare the sports infra first right? after all, its basically free and wont cost the local LGU or something.... i think of reasons why cebu was chosen even if we are not the "football capital" of the philippines:
1) accessibility/location - we're right smack in the middle of the philippines, accessible by air/sea/land (roro, Ceres) from other provinces
2) cebu airport has sufficient flight connections to asian hubs
3) sufficient hotel rooms/accomodation and night life facilities should international football events happen
4) we have a thriving local football scene - a lot of Cebuanos actually play football even before the Askals brought it into the limelight.

just a thought.

^^YES! finally this is what i was looking for something like dis!!

If you need a guide sa Osmena Peak, call me. Also, in the next few months, mag climb man ko several mountains around Cebu and Negros. So ma familiar na nako ang trail. I can guide you too to the mountains I know.

Regarding sa Mt. Lantoy, nindot pud kaau na. However, there are 2 points that I should raise.

1. We need to register at the Argao Tourism Office kay aron sila mo provide ug guide. I have a strong feeling na di pwede pakatkatan ang mountain without the permission of the Argao Tourism Office.
2. Mt. Lantoy is quite challenging. I am not really sure gyud if makaya ni sa mga beginner na climbers.

Personally, I do not agree sa notion na "this mountain is more beautiful than this mountain" (unless if we are talking about forest cover vs. kaingin-razed mountainsides). Each mountain has its own beauty.

Which is for me a very desperate move. We know nga kusog ang sports tourism pero it doesn't mean ato sad nang pang hingusgan og tukod nga (FOR A PURPOSE NGA MAKA BAWI LANG GYUD TA SA ATONG CURRENT STANDING?) lol... di nasad na mao kay desperado nasad kaayo nag dating...

Let's focus more on advertisment and promotion... (focus this but not disregard that)...

Napay Argao, Badian... Kadaghan. Siguro sa whole population sa turista sa tibuok kalibutan, .00000000001 % pa siguro ang naka ari sa Cebu so we need promotion lang gyud and we should think nga wala pa ta ka one tenth or kung sa 20K marathon pa, 2 kilometers pa atong nadagan. So daghan pa kaayo ang wa kaari... .00000000001 % ra'y napul-an and there are millions of tourists pa nga wapa ka discover sa Cebu...

mo example ta ko nga ilang F-1 race didto, less than 10 % ra ang rason nga adtoon sa mga turista nya dako pa kaayog gasto sa facility pero ang ganahan tan awn sa mga turista, ang katahum man gyud sa lugar...

Salamat bai!

Pwede pod sa SRP!:) The late afternoon light there looks great for a prenup with expansive grounds, a cool green/blue mountain backdrop, or a semi urban background (Cebu City skyline).

Mountain parks- Kan-Irag, Mt. View, Tops (the bell and the concentric ring structure)

Sea and Mountain and distant Cebu City backdrop- Day-as in Cordova in the early parts of morning offers a dramatic view of Cebu City (just after sunrise to about 10 AM)

Agreed! Although it is never a bad idea to venture into new things and diversify (kay tinuod man pod nga new things will also keep Cebu perpetually interesting, naay permi bag-o pod ba para balik-balikan), we must never forget to GO BACK TO THE BASICS! Improve infra, maintain cleanliness, clean out the rotten and dirty places, increase our livability as a city. This way, not just the tourists, but the residents will also be very happy.

In short, let's focus on HOUSEKEEPING this time. Our main strength lies in our being the MOST BALANCED TOURIST SPOT in the country (naa bay lain nga makapanghambog ug Urbanity and Nature in great complementing proportions?). We may want to experiment and keep churning out new ideas (sports tourism, themeparks, urban lifestyle centers e.g. upcoming Il Corso and SM SRP), but we must not abandon our old and tested treasures.

I agree pod, that it's probably hard to compare mountains because they're like people with personalities of their own hehe. But in terms of forest cover, mas pristine ang Lantoy kaysa Mantalongon/Osmena Peak. Both are worth the climb!

Sakto ka bai, you need to secure a permit from the office, unya naa pod silay irecommend nga guide with fees. I would suggest nga you would take this option kay aron pod makatabang mo sa local tourism nila. I think it's only responsible to do so. Ang amo guide ato kay si Rechie/Richie (bayot nga longlegged legs kaayo) who was very cool about it.

Suggested iti:

Meet sa plaza
Sakay tricycle or multicab or habal2x to the foot hills.
Climb and spend the night at the camp overlooking the east side of Cebu.
Continue climb the next day, drop by cambuhagay falls, Balay sa Agta (cave) among other things!

OP is nindot man ghapon...iyang beauty is the "pastoral" scene of farmlands perfectly blending with the karst formation.

Bitaw, sakto ka anang magpa register gyud sa tourism office bai. And aside from being a responsible citizen to help with their tourism, it shows pud na responsible na climber.

Sige mag plan unya ta sa IT sa Mt. Lantoy and the side-trips mga next month tingali. Mo katkat sa ko sa Mt. Manunggal in preparation for my major climb sa Mt. Kanlaon this June.

Wa pa ko kaanha diha bai Slerz pero according to my research sa website, mas steep kuno and mas wild ang trail although the mountain itself is shorter than OP. Then sa side trip to the caves and waterfalls, naay trail na mag agi ta ug cliff. So mas challenging

Kaya ra kaau ni nimo oi.

Ang gasto tingali ana is less than 500 ghapon, then maybea bit extra gamay amutan para sa guide. Usually ing-ana man na basta diri ra sa Cebu Island.

Got it! Thanks a lot!

Ayos bitaw pod didto!

Continue climb the next day, drop by cambuhagay falls, Balay sa Agta (cave) among other things!

hala interested ko aning Lantoy! ganahan ko agi og kalasangan og kabagnotan! GO GO GO!!!!

sounds interesting..

Mount Lantoy is said to be the domain of Maria Cacao, a diwata who lives in a cave in the mountain. Outside her cave grow numerous cacao trees, which are said to be her plantation. After harvest time come rains that wash down the mountain, enabling Maria Cacao to float down to the towns below in her golden ship to sell her products.

pwede ta magsabot Drin, kay wala man ko nakakuyog nila. Pwede ta magplan as a group sa wala pa nakaadto

murag nindot sad ni sa Mt. Lantoy da

di man ang main purpose bai sa nindot nga facilities kay sports tourism. pareha nako nga hilig gyud kaayo ug sports dugay rako sige pangandoy kanus.a pa naay nindot nga venue ang Sugbo ug time naman siguro ron nga tukuran na.

Sakto ka bai!

Sayon ra i climb didto bai? Mga pila kahay gasto tanan?

Wa pa ko kaanha diha bai Slerz pero according to my research sa website, mas steep kuno and mas wild ang trail although the mountain itself is shorter than OP. Then sa side trip to the caves and waterfalls, naay trail na mag agi ta ug cliff. So mas challenging

Kaya ra kaau ni nimo oi.

Ang gasto tingali ana is less than 500 ghapon, then maybea bit extra gamay amutan para sa guide. Usually ing-ana man na basta diri ra sa Cebu Island.

Mga 2007 or 2008 pa man mi ato nangatkat nakalimot na ko pila exactly, mga around ana sa estimate ni bai @Antediluvian. Pero dili man pod gyud ingana gyud kalisod..kaya ra kaayo ni ninyo. Chicken ra kaayo oi labi nas mga laagan kaayog dagway, you are not known as LAKAWboys for nothing:)

hala interested ko aning Lantoy! ganahan ko agi og kalasangan og kabagnotan! GO GO GO!!!!

Dili pod gyud ingana ka thick ang forest ha, ayaw pod pagexpect og ala Amazon rainforest bai hehe.

OT:

Sakto kaayo ka bai Bloody haha. Namix up nako ang duha. It's Bugasok Falls nga gamay ra kaayo pero okay sab gyud ang iya formation.

Please allow me to post this here:

Hi guys,

Please consider spreading the word about the upcoming KADAUGAN STREET PARTY 2011. It is an exciting additional attraction to the existing “Kadaugan sa Mactan” festivities. As promoters of Cebu, we need to help spread the word and help make this event a success and ensure that it continues every year. This could be Cebu's next big thing after Sinulog!

See my blogpost about it here http://www.ohmycebu.com/lapu-lapu-city-kadaugan-street-party-on-april-30-2011/

Latin American outsourcing summit to feature Cebu City
http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Economy&title=Latin-American-outsourcing-summit-to-feature-Cebu-City&id=29618

CEBU CITY -- A presentation on how Cebu City developed into a global outsourcing destination will be made during the Latin American and Caribbean Outsourcing and Offshoring Summit in Montevideo, Uruguay later this week.
Joel Mari S. Yu, managing director of Cebu Investment Promotions Center, will explain how Cebu City emerged as No. 9 in Tholons’ top 10 outsourcing destinations in the world.
His presentation, entitled "Cebu City: The Rise of an Outsourcing Star," will be made on Thursday, the first day of the summit.
"Cebu City is being looked up to as a model for small cities in Latin America and the Caribbean which are trying to promote IT-BPO investments," Mr. Yu said in a press statement.

Cebu is the only city in the top 10 list with a population of less than a million, Tholons vice-president Manuel Jacinto Ravago said. Despite this, Cebu City’s outsourcing industry has been able to find around 60,000 employees.
Mr. Yu’s presentation will showcase Cebu City’s human capital development efforts, such as establishment of scholarship fund, specialized training programs, advertising campaign, and technology, laboratory and software upgrading by universities.
Cebu City currently hosts more than 100 IT-BPO firms with a total of $720 million in revenues.
Tholons has crafted a road map that will guide Cebu as it transitions to the higher-value knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) sector. A survey undertaken as part of the road map showed that Cebu City’s talent pool has stronger analytical abilities than India’s. Analytical ability is crucial for KPO services.
Implementation of the road map would enable Cebu’s outsourcing industry to generate $2.4 billion in revenues and around 150,000 jobs by 2017. -- Marites S. Villamor

^^The Gaisano's don't need to compete with SM and Ayala, by the way. Their forte is into department stores for the masses. It's not bad to keep it that way.

The strategy of the Gaisanos to put mini-malls almost all the strategic locations in and outside of Cebu is actually a good idea.

But indeed, it is inevitable for the Gaisano/Robinsons malls in Cebu to become somewhat like sari-sari store.

EDIT: Pero og ma-fully revitalize na ang downtown area, unya ang mga karaan nga Gaisano stores diha kay mo-diversify into high-end boutiques parehas sa Hermes, Burberry ug uban pa, aws, kana mo classy...Hehehhe

I really appreciated what Gaisano's did to provide jobs and access to the basic needs to some regions in Visayas and Mindanao. so be it, Gaisano malls are still for the masses and it shall be the welfare of for the people who are longing for the basic needs in cheap and affordable prices and rates... :)

Take it easy bai @ronnier. It will never escalate into that. Hehe. This is a kind of ingroup thing that is hard to explain and hard to just wish away. You know quite well that the concept of a Republic of Cebu has a historical basis so it is there because of several reasons. However, I don't think this will be used as a reason to go into a civil war or any of the military sort. Especially not now of all times when we had more difficult times when we felt isolated and neglected in the past. This kind of Cebuano patriotism isn't bad at all and this has been channeled into productive efforts, and that is why you can see Cebu as it is today. Without it, we would not have achieved what we have now, given how we are very far behind other provinces in terms of natural resources. I'm explaining this, because it is not a form of crab mentality, IMO. We aren't putting anyone down just so we would look better. And I am not also going to be apologetic about this sentiment. But again, I don't think this will ever become secessionist in that kind of way. Maybe more independence with planning and handling our own economy, and the wealth and goods we create, but not to break away from the country!

politically correct....we cannot be guilty of being proud....as long as its in the proper perspective...

Cebu depends on the entire nation just as the nation gets a lot from Cebu being one of the economic dynamos in the national GDP...

I cannot imagine one day in the future of this supposed 'republic' of Cebu....will have to pay import fees and taxes for the water from Inabanga in Bohol in the future.....or Leyte charging import fees to the republic of Cebu for the supply of power from its geothermal plants...

just want to clear things out, geographically it's very hard to separate and that's self explanatory but for important reason we need our fair share from the national government. our national leaders should open up their mind and stop making those publicity by blocking charter change, i think you know what i mean. we simply needs FEDERALISM.

Southern Sudan seceded from Republic of Sudan because they were considered as second class citizens, lots of discrimination. me here in our workplace were discriminated from the people of Luzon, they act as if they are from western country and the Bisayans are from third wirld country but i admit many also are good and civilized like you.

so, just let us be if we want to be Federalized.

a millions like i couldnt agree more bai :)

We mourn the end of the Robinsons Cebu and the Midtown Hotel on top of it..
It is itself an iconic structure.. and its a great loss to Cebu..

But somehow there are also some good things to learn for this tragedy...

First, with the fast changing skyline of Cebu.. it is already a must that firefighters shall be equipped and trained in highrise fires like this.. and it is already an urgent matter.

Second, because the national govt. had been not seriously attending to the request of Cebu for a modern fire fighting equipments this is now the best opportunity to lobby it.

Third, that developers will now give a serious look on fire safety considering that buyers will now be very attentive to fire safety.

Fourth, that fire safety and regulations will now be seriously taken by Cebuanos.

CEBU CITY, Philippines— (UPDATE 2) Robinsons Place-Cebu hopes to resume operations on Wednesday after its second floor was hit by fire on Sunday afternoon. Nobody was hurt in the fire, according to a company official.

Hermosilla Irizari, Robinsons Land Corp. Property manager for Cebu, said they would wait for clearance from the fire department for the RLC team to be allowed to enter.

"If we can get the clearance tomorrow (Monday), we can immediately clean up and restore operations soon," she told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

She said they might resume mall operations on Wednesday.

Roseann Villegas, corporate PR manager, said the fire was out at 4 p.m. (not 5 p.m. as initially reported), more than two hours after it broke out in one of the retail outlets on the second level past 2 p.m.

She said no one was hurt in the fire.

"We are currently cleaning up the area," she said.

Irizari also declined from commenting on reports that the mall’s alarm system failed during the fire, saying they were still waiting for an official report on the fire.

One boutique totally damaged: Fire hits mall at Fuente Osmeña (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=677627&publicationSubCategoryId=107)
By Niña G. Sumacot (The Freeman) Updated April 18, 2011 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - Firefighters and volunteers were able to safely evacuate all people from a shopping mall and a hotel near Fuente Osmeña after a mid afternoon fire hit the establishment.
Fire broke out at one of the boutiques inside Robinson’s Place at around 3 p.m. sending shoppers, employees, and guests of the Cebu Midtown Hotel, which is above the shopping mall scrambling to safety.

The Cebu City Fire Department, which received the alarm at 3:04 p.m. immediately called the second alarm.
It took the firefighters over two hours to declare the fire under control. The Bench boutique was totally damaged and Mang Inasal, which is adjacent to it, also sustained some damage.

As of presstime last night, firemen were still at the scene to make sure that the fire would not reignite.
Cebu City Fire Marshal Aderson Comar said the fire was controlled and was not able to spread to other establishments, but admitted they had difficulty in clearing out the area because of the thick smoke.

He said there were limited openings inside the mall so they had to break some windows to allow the smoke to dissipate.
There was no fire damage to the department store, said the fire officials, but there were goods that sustained water damage.
The thick smoke reached up to the Midtown Hotel, Comar said.

Fire Officer 2 Emiliano Daño, one of the fire investigators, said 20 people, who were guests and employees of the hotel, were rescued as they could not leave the building when the fire broke out.
The firefighters had to use their aerial ladders to bring the people down.
Donald Kintanar, who was one of those rescued, sustained injuries on both hands, when he was forced to climb down a rope, Daño said.

Daño added that they also found a man from the Middle East who was sleeping inside his room and wasn’t aware of the incident.
He was also brought to safety. Daño said he has still to account for those people, who reportedly got suffocated and were taken to the hospital. Daño said, according to the mall’s security guard, the fire started from the Bench boutique. According to the boutique’s saleslady, however, she saw flames at the escalator and then the fire broke out.

Daño said they will visit the area this morning to check the extent of the damage and to verify what really triggered the fire.
Firemen from fire stations in Metro Cebu, including the Cebu Filipino-Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade, and rescuers from the Philippine Air Force and Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation, helped during the incident.

Cebu City Police Office director Melvin Ramon Buenafe deployed his men to secure the perimeter of the mall from potential thieves, to help control the flow of traffic, and to control the crowd especially the kibitzers.

QUICK RESPONSE

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said that he was satisfied with the short time that it took the fire bureau to get to the area.
He also commended the volunteers who helped in containing the fire and rescuing those trapped inside.
Firefighters however were not able to go inside at first for lack of enough breathing apparatus.
Rama said that there is also a need for ladders that may reach up higher than the 4th floor.
Cebu City Councilor Noel Wenceslao said the city government will acquire fire fighting gear since there are already enough fire trucks donated to the fire bureau.
Wenceslao said that the fire bureau must upgrade its equipment and gear because the city is becoming more sophisticated with many high rise buildings being constructed.

He added that there is a need to organize more volunteer groups who will respond during times of disasters.
Currently, Cebu has the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation, the Basak-Pardo Emergency Rescue, among others.
Rama has also ordered the management of the Robinson’s Place to take care of its employees and customers who were injured and brought to the hospital. – with Jessica Ann R. Pareja—/NLQ (FREEMAN)

THE Cebu City Government will implement 295 infrastructure projects worth at least P1.4 billion this year.

Engr. June Nadine Sison said these projects include, among others, road concreting in some 42 streets in the city, drainage, ripraps, bridges and asphalting.

Do you know where to buy the cheapest rice in Cebu City? Join our discussion on Facebook.

Sison heads the construction division of the Department of Engineering and Public Works.

She said the City appropriated P100 million for road concreting.

They have identified 42 streets in 30 barangays: 15 in the north district and 15 in the south.

Road area

Under the budgetary estimates of the road concreting contract, each of the 30 barangays will have a road area of 1,940.24 square meters to be concreted at P3.3 million per project.

In the south district, the road concreting will be implemented in Barangays Babag, Bonbon, Buhisan, Buot-Taup, Guadalupe, Kalunasan, Pamutan, Pung-ol Sibugay, Sapang-daku, Sinsin, Sudlon I, Sudlon II, Tabunan, Tag-ba-o and Toong.

In the north, it will be implemented in Barangays Binaliw, Pulang-bato, Mabini, Paril, Cambino-cot, Agsungot, Guba, Sirao, Adlaon, Taptap, Budlaan, Lusaran, San Jose, Banilad and Malubog.

The City also appropriated P100 million for asphalting that will be implemented in 37 areas, covering 25 barangays.

The asphalting projects will be implemented in Barangays Kinasang-an, Cogon Pardo, Mambaling, Duljo Fatima, San Nicolas Proper, Calamba, Punta Princesa, Suba, Sambag I, Sambag II, Mabolo, Ka-sambagan, Tinago, San Roque, Sto. Niño, Ermita, Pahina Central, Kamaga-yan, San Antonio, Sta. Cruz, Talamban, Bacayan and Pit-os.

Undermanned

The biggest allocation goes to the rehabilitation of the Talamban-Bacayan-Pit-os Road (P19.5 million).

In an interview with Sun.Star Cebu, Sison said their engineers are working overtime to
prepare the program of works and estimates (Powe) for the projects.

Sison said that of the 295 funded projects, 192 have been identified. Of the number, she said they still have to make 128 Powe.

“Ga-overtime na gyud mi to cope sa kadaghan sa projects (We’re working overtime to cope with the projects). I only have eight engineers in my division,” she said.

Sison said the remaining Powe will be finished by May or June.

Cebu DepEd project to construct 64 school buildings in province (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/local-news/2011/04/17/cebu-deped-project-construct-64-school-buildings-province-150876)Comment | More | By Oscar C. Pineda

ABOUT P162.74 million is now ready to build 64 school buildings in 28 towns in Cebu Province.

The project is divided into 44 clusters and each cluster will get an allocation from the Department of Education (DepEd) Central Office.

Do you know where to buy the cheapest rice in Cebu City? Join our discussion on Facebook.

A similar project will start in Mandaue City next month after they complete the bidding process, Administrative Officer Benjamin Tiongson of the city schools division said. Tiongson is the vice chairman of the bids and awards committee (BAC), chaired by
Superintendent Ninfa Bongo.

Spread in different towns

He said their P20-million allocation from the DepEd Central Office is intended for the Ibabao Elementary School, Mandaue City Comprehensive High School, Canduman National High School and Tabok National High School.

Based on the published invitation to bid, the P162 million Cebu DepEd project will be spread in different towns; each town may receive more than a cluster and many construction sites.

Minglanilla town, for example, has four clusters and five construction sites. Three sites are for a proposed two-story four-classroom building, one in Lipata Central Elementary School, another in the Lipata National High School and a third one in the Camp 7 National High school.

The fourth construction site will be a two-classroom building in the Vito Elementary School and the fifth site is a three-classroom building in Calajoan Elementary School.

Dr. Gregorio Cyrus Elejorde, BAC chairman and Cebu Schools Division assistant superintendent, invited contractors through a published ad in national broadsheets.

The project must be done in 90 to 120 calendar days and may start after the awarding in the middle of May.

50-percent increase

In the first quarter this year, Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia increased the Provincial School Board’s (PSB) fund allocation by more than 50 percent, compared to last year’s amount.

The PSB fund went from P115.4 million in 2010 to P177.8 million this year.

Garcia said the increase was intended to address the demand for educational supplies, more teachers and classrooms for DepEd’s K+12 program next school year.

The program stretches the existing 10-year basic education program to 12 years.

Provincial Engineering Office records revealed that as of Jan. 31, 2011, the Capitol has constructed 429 two-classroom school buildings, worth P303.988 million, and spent P9.442 million to rehabilitate old school buildings.

I'm glad nobody died in the fire. Hopefully there were not many that were hurt by smoke inhalation. Smoke in some cases causes more deaths and injury than the flames.

We stayed at the Midtown during our last two days in Cebu. It's a decent hotel. The location is nice and we like the easy access to the mall and transportation. The only thing was we were in a smoking room and it smells of cigarette smoke including the hallways. We didn't have a choice because we didn't have a reservation. I'm glad the fire was contained in a small area. It would be sad to lose the building since it's one of the icons in Fuente Osmena.

The DILG or the national government or whatever government agency that has jurisdiction should help Cebu by allocating a budget for firefighting equipment and training. Cebu by itself does not have enough resources to buy modern fire trucks with ladders and other firefighting equipments nor does it have the budget for training. In addition to firetrucks, scba's and other equipments, fire department personnel also need to be trained to deal with hazardous materials and checking and enforcing fire code requirements in buildings.

^^sa report kay entire mall man daw pero IMo wala tingali maapil ang supermaket kay sa 2nf floor man nag sugod pero damage sad tungod sa tubig... Pero latest report from ABS CBN ganihang 7pm, nag kayo pa daw ang basement where the supermarket is located... Mahibaw an ra nato na ugma kung whole mall ba gyud ang nasunog...

The stores have to sell the damage items at a (Sale Price) or give away to charities due to smoke soak on clothing, nanimahong ang mga sanina(Bahong asso) so also the interior of the building. The have to purge the smell of the area. Either they have to repaint the area as the quickies way to to remove the smell or put some charcoal(oling) as it absorbed the smell. Most of these damages are covered by insurance if they are covered. :ohno:

I do not think they can fully open in one week, maybe partially.

Hopefully all Cebu new construction buildings will have water sprinklers and smoke detectors installed.

Close this CEBU CITY, Philippines—In about two years, the biggest shopping mall in Cebu costing over P4 billion will rise at the city-owned reclaimed property, South Road Properties.

Building the mall is retail giant SM Prime Holdings.

SM Prime president Hans T. Sy said the P4.5-billion shopping mall would be the fourth biggest among its malls in the Philippines, next to SM North Edsa, SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City and SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

The shopping mall is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2013, Sy said.

The new four-level mall will feature a five-theater Cineplex, an iMAX theatre, 18-lane bowling center, ice skating rink near the food court and a roof garden.

The shopping mall is part of the 30-hectare mixed use development project of SM Prime called SM Seaside City, which broke ground last week.

Sy said the group had started the construction of the P800-million road network at the property and would soon build a P100-million church at the site.

While the company has plans to build other structures, including a residential condominium and a hotel, Sy said the priority is the mall.

He said earlier that the entire SRP project would cost about P20 billion.

He added that the group might start discussions with the Carlson group, which manages Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City, for another hotel partnership.

Meanwhile, Sy said that the completion of the SM mall in Consolacion town, 12 kilometers north of Cebu City, would be delayed because the group had decided to increase the mall’s floor space from 40,000 sq. meters to 70,000 sq. meters.

“We have not finished it yet and we have decided to expand it,” he said.

He credited his father, Henry Sy, for the group’s aggressive expansion program, adding that he learned from his father how to think long-term.

“I believe this country has so much future growth. The retail industry is still going to be strong,” Sy said, adding that 80 percent of the earnings of Filipinos are being spent on consumables.

This year, SM Prime has plans to open three malls—SM City Masinag in Antipolo City, SM City San Fernando in Pampanga and SM City Olongapo in Zambales.

It also plans to expand two existing malls, SM City Davao and SM City Dasmariñas in Cavite.

By the end of the year, SM Prime will have 43 malls nationwide with a gross floor area (GFA) of 5.2 million square meters.

Including the SM malls in China, the company’s GFA will reach 5.9 million sq. m.

Mayor Rama wants to buy chopper for emergency (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/news/view/20101104-301381/Mayor-Rama-wants-to-buy-chopper--for-emergency)
By Edison delos Angeles
Cebu Daily News First Posted 07:54:00 11/04/2010

IT is now Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama’s turn to propose the acquisition of an aircraft. Rama said he wanted to buy a helicopter due to the need to have an “eye in the sky” when disaster strikes.
Rama said he tasked the Cebu City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC) to study the viability of the plan since “it will bring us to an effective and better response action.”

The mayor saw the need for a city-owned helicopter after a fire razed 123 homes in barangay Duljo Fatima on Monday night.

CDCC consultant Gerardo Carillo said that the fire rendered 2,079 people homeless. The fire broke out at 9:06 p.m. City fire marshal Ismael Codilla declared the fire under control at 10:20 p.m.
But it continued to burn houses located across Spolarium Street and was later contained at 11:13 p.m.

With a helicopter, “we don’t have to keep connecting hoses to put out the fire without seeing anything because we don’t know the place. Everything is clearer from above” said Rama. A 2004 Field Research Corp. survey showed that a three to five-seat helicopter would cost between $254,000 million and $1.037 million.

It would require another $143 to $300 per hour of operating cost.
Rama said the helicopter can be stationed at the Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base in Lapu-Lapu City.

“I want the helicopter connected to their (MBEAB) central command because that is what is very urgent. So that we can right away see it (the fire site).”
Rep. Tomas Osmeña, Cebu City south district, said he had the same plan when he earlier proposed the purchase of three Helio light planes from the Department of Education (DepEd).

“The Helio aircrafts cost less than a helicopter,” he said.
The planes’ maintenance cost is only a third of a helicopter’s, he added.
“But the people don’t seem to want these so it’s up to them,” said Osmeña.
DepEd earlier offered their 40-year-old Vietnam War light planes worth about P4.7 million to the Cebu City.

Osmeña said the DepEd was willing to give the planes to the city government in exchange for the millions the city spent for the construction of school buildings. The city had to spend only to refurbish and maintain the planes.

However, the plan to acquire the planes – Helio Aircraft model H-391B, model H-295, model H-250/295 – was met with criticism.
Rama said the plan to acquire the planes was “as good as dead” after adverse public reaction.
The mayor said he would rather have a helicopter for the city.
Rama said he was disappointed with how the Duljo-Fatima fire was handled.
He reiterated his desire to already have Codilla replaced.

Rama said he already recommended Col. Anderson Comar to replace Codilla but the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), which has control of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), is yet to act on his recommendation.

The vice mayor said he was shocked that he arrived at the C. Padilla fire scene ahead of the police and firefighters.
Fire victims started to return to their burnt shanties yesterday.
They used whatever materials they were able to salvage to put up tents.
The city government is expected to give them food assistance until Friday.

Barangay officials led by captain Elmer Abella promised to help with their food needs starting on Saturday.
Abella assured that the Hospicio de San Jose that owns the lot which the fire victims now occupy, would allow them to rebuild their houses there.

Investment group markets Cebu's BPO strength to Latin America

CEBU CITY, Philippines – In a move to better position Cebu as an investment destination for the international market, particularly as a hub for the global outsourcing and off-shoring industry, a top official of the Cebu Investments and Promotions Center (CIPC) is in Montevideo, Uruguay to help lure investors to capitalize on this opportunity.

CIPC Managing Director Joel Mari Yu reported he is presently attending the Latin American and Caribbean Outsourcing and Offshoring Summit and will be delivering a presentation dubbed, “Cebu City: The Rise of an Outsourcing Star.”

“My presentation will explain the emergence of Cebu City as number nine in Tholon’s Top 10 Outsourcing Destinations in the world,” he said in a phone interview.

According to Yu, his presentation will focus on Cebu City with a population of less than one million people, was able to ramp up a total of 60,000 direct employees in the IT-BPO sector, with US$720 million in annual revenues as of 2010, and more than 100 IT-BPO firms operating within the city.

Yu’s presentation will also boast of Cebu’s Human Capital Development efforts, as it is considered as the most comprehensive in the Philippines.
“Cebu City government for instance has established scholarship funds as well as allocations for advertising campaign, and the creation of specialized training programs in coordination with the private sector players or industry stakeholders,” he said.

Yu will likewise be informing investors in Latin America on the introduction
of curriculum development program across Cebu universities and colleges, including the training of English

Teachers, the Immersion program of IT professor in companies, and the Internship program of student.
“Cebu City is being looked up to as a model for small cities in Latin America and the Caribbean which are also trying to promote IT-BPO investments,”
he added.

The conference is being participated by BPOs from the Americas, Europe and Asia. It is being organized by theInter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Tholons.

Earlier, Tholons Managing Director for South East Asia Jonathan De Luzuriaga urged Cebu BPO/ICT promoters to take advantage of its niche in Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO).

Filipino designer creates World’s 1st Biodegradable car (http://goodnewspilipinas.com/2011/04/18/filipino-designer-creates-worlds-1st-biodegradable-car/)
Posted on April 18th, 2011 under Technology Milestones

World renowned Filipino product designer Kenneth Cobonpue has created the world’s first and only biodegrable car made out of bamboo and rattan called the Phoenix.

Cobonpue is known for his signature designs using natural fibres and materials. The Phoenix is his latest venture in partnership with design apprentice Alberth Birkner which is created using rattan, steel, bamboo and nylon. Showcased for the first time at the “Imagination and Innovation” exhibit at Milan, the Phoenix is a testament of high quality craftsmanship to create an environmental friendly solution to transport.

Cobonpue collects and tinkers with vintage cars and is an ardent car lover. However, his concern for the environment is the true inspiration behind this design. When pressed upon this Cobonpue states that though car manufacturing has been a hi-technology process employing robots and complex processes, maybe all that can be done away by a simple handmade solution. The average age of a car is 5-10 years in the industrialized world and the subsequent process of crushing and recycling cars is energy intensive, costly and inefficient. Thus having a biodegradable shell makes a lot of sense. Moreover, the shell can be customized for users according to their heights and builds.

The chassis is formed by the bamboo spine that runs in curves making space for wheels as well as the engine at the back. The rear end consists of a splay of rattan coupled with LED rods to emit light. The sides have provision for glass windows as well.

A renowned name in furniture created from natural fibre, Cobonpue has stunned the design world with his new creation. There is no engine yet but there are talks on the possibility of adding an electric motor to power the Phoenix. Though he does not have any immediate plans to commercialize this, Cobonpue considers it as a creative exercise in the right direction.
The world’s first bamboo and rattan roadster was built in just 10 days. At 153 inches long, it is a small and elegant solution to a big and ugly problem: the waste created by old cars that outlive their purpose. “This project attempts to unveil the future of green vehicles using woven skins from organic fibers mated to composite materials and powered by green technology,” says Mr. Cobonpue.

The Phoenix’s biodegradable skin is designed to last the average length of time a person keeps a car (5 years in industrialized countries, 10-20 years elsewhere) so that the car doesn’t create unnecessary waste by lasting longer than its owner needs it. The skin can be replaced inexpensively if the owner wishes to keep their car longer, and the Phoenix’s frame can be easily customized for individual customers’ needs. No word yet on exactly what engine or motor will power the green car, but it is small enough that an all-electric setup should provide plenty of juice to move this work of art around town.

Aron ma effecient ang traffic flow sa flyover himuon one way going to the city from 6AM to 12 Noon unya from 1PM to 7PM going to Talisay ang flow of traffic.

mao na gibuhat sa traffic flow sa major bridges and tunnels diri kay giutay ang mubiya sa ciudad kay sa musuod sa Manhattan.

Bitaw maybe they can try this scheme. Although murag late na kaayu ang 12 noon. Maybe 6-10am lang, then 4-8pm. Mas effective pa jud kung mahuman na ug widen ang side roads.

That's a good idea. Mao sab na ginabuhat sa Caldecott Tunnel (Eastbay) ug Golden Gate bridge (Northbay); they open up more lanes heading into the city in the morning and vice versa in the afternoon

Ang hustong oras sa traffic flow reversal is for office-working hours days. 6AM - 9 AM and 3 PM to 6 PM. In under river tunnels, bridges and hi-ways.

Ang 2 lanes ang ablihan ugma... pero di ablihan kung way signages and over hanging wires removed. Scheduled opening 9am tomorrow. Upon opening is the start of road widening beside the flyover and the demolition of the skywalk infront of Mambaling Elem School... and construction of a new skywalk in the vicinity...

DENNIS D. ESTOPACE / REPORTER

Max’s expansion would also be felt in the domestic front with three Krispy Kreme stores to be opened in Cebu by September this year.

It was in 2004 when Max’s subsidiary Real American bought the franchise for the Philippines of the Winston-Salem, North Carolina-headquartered doughnut brand.

Trota said the new stores will be constructed within shopping centers in Metro Cebu.

QHA TRENT, the independent holistic clinical accreditation scheme for hospitals and clinics based in Sheffield, United Kingdom, have recently complemented the survey of Cebu Doctors' University Hospitals, a leading private sector hospitals in the Philippines, and the hospital has been successful in obtaining accreditation.

Unlike ISO and industry-based standards which some hospitals and clinics make use of QHA Trent is a clinically-based scheme which puts patients first and looks at things from the patient's point of view. Survey teams always include a senior doctor from the UK and it is solidly based on the well-known British system of NHS clinical governance which is one of the most tried and trusted system for delivering safe healthcare in the world.

Cebu Doctors' University Hospital is the first university in the country and Southeast Asia to become independently accredited by QHA Trent from the United Kingdom. Allied to their success in the Philippines own national accreditation scheme, this definitely represents two great achievements by a very forward looking hospitals, and congratulations are in order.
