As a part of the ship spotters for the Cebu Team. I strongly agree on
building a bigger bridge and dredging the area in order for Big Ships like
SuperFerry, Negros Navigation, PSACC (Sulpicio Lines) and all other Cargo
ships to pass within the Mactan Channel. So that they can save time and
fuel.

The advantage for the current Cebu Port is that its favorable for the
Mindanao bound ships. because there are no obstructions like the Mactan
Bridge. But the disadvantage is the bigger ship operators and international
cargo ships. Cauz they need to go to Hilutungan Channel in order to dock
in the Cebu Port.

If ever the Cebu Port will be relocated to Liloan.....

The tables will be turned. Mindanao bound ferry will need to pass by Hilutungan
Channel in order to go to their places in Mindanao. While Manila bound ferries
has the advantage because they wont need to do a u turn in Hilutungan
Channel.

Cebuano indie vies in Urian:banana::banana::banana:
STAR BYTES By Butch Francisco

In my past few columns, I had been writing about some of the Best Picture nominees that are competing in the 34th Gawad Urian to be held on May 17, Tuesday, at the Marriott Hotel Grand Ballroom. The show is being presented by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and will be covered for television by Cinema One (telecast date is May 22, Sunday).

In the running for Best Picture are Amigo, Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria, Ang Mundo sa Panahon ng Yelo, Chassis, Halaw, Limbunan, Noy, Sheika and Tsardyer.

Below is my review of Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria, which is produced by Creative Programs, Inc. and Panumduman Pictures.

Among local directors, there is a cinematic term called tuhog, which is a method of filming wherein the camera grinds continuously from scene to scene without resorting to editing.

In Hollywood, Orson Welles used this device in 1958 in A Touch of Evil. Robert Altman did the same in The Player. But film being film, the camera has to stop grinding after a while because a roll can only last about 20 minutes.

The arrival of the digital age changed all that because it enabled quite a few filmmakers abroad to experiment with the innovative idea of shooting a film non-stop from beginning to end.

In the Philippines, Cebuano indie director Remton Siega Zuasola tried using this film technique in To Siomai With Love that was crowned Best Short Film in the 2009 Gawad Urian.

Remton is in the running again this year — this time for a full-length feature called Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria, where he once more shoots the entire film in one, long single take from start to finish.

For about an hour and a half, you witness this non-stop unfolding of a story that is shot entirely in the island of Olango (a migratory bird sanctuary) in the province of Cebu. Told in Cebuano, but with English sub-titles, the film starts with the preparations for the departure of the lead character Eleuteria (played by Donna Isadora Gimeno) to her date with what her parents had mapped out as her fate and destiny in life: She is being sent-off as a mail-order bride to Germany to marry a man named Hans she had never met.

She hesitates to go on with the trip and she is practically dragged by her mother (Lucia Jeuzan) to the pier, which is her first stop to get to her final destination.

During that entire walk, she meets various characters that represent most present-day Filipinos. There is a first cousin who had previously married a foreigner, came back toughened by life, but affluent. Even if she is only rich by small-town standards, she makes sure everyone in that island sees how affluent she had become by sporting fashionable clothes and having a maid at her beck and call to follow her around. She also makes it known to the entire neighborhood that she is building a concrete structure as a symbol of her financial success.

At some point, she meets her match when Eleuteria’s recruiter arrives. The recruiter had also arrived from Europe and is equally comfortable in life after having married a foreigner herself.

Along the way, Eleuteria is almost snatched away for good by this swain she is in love with who tries to convince her to elope with him. He is like most other unthinking people who don’t even plan for the future. Like the generation before them, they will marry at a young age, have children they cannot even raise properly and so expect the cycle to be repeated after them.

Of course, there is the village idiot, who may not necessarily represent the demented among us, but could very well stand for the blissfully ignorant. There is a lot of that in this country: Happily unaware of the social ills that envelop this nation.

During that punishing walk under the sun (the cinematography is so effective even you as a viewer will feel the heat like it is burning your skin just watching the film), there is also a glimpse of Filipino customs and traditions (our love for fiestas) and just about anything Pinoy.

Remton succeeds in his attempt to show Filipino traits, both good and bad — plus the current sad state of the Philippines. But his approach is never condescending. He only illustrates real-life situations — as they are and minus any exaggeration (everything, in fact, happens in real time). He even manages to stress the fact that we may be poor, but we are not illiterate. That even in the remotest of barrios, we understand English and are no stranger to consumer goods from abroad.

In one scene, the girl’s father (played by Gregg Tecson), who is not completely sold on the idea of selling their daughter to some foreigner, sarcastically tells his wife to be the one to fly to Germany and marry Hans. “I hope he makes Hans pork and beans out of you!” He obviously is referring to Hunt’s, a canned product of Western origin that even people in our farthest islands consume and patronize.

Little details like this one all contribute to making Damgo one of the truly most outstanding films of 2010. Thematically, it is an important film because it tackles relevant social issues that continue to plague this country.

As an acting vehicle, the featured untested actors all shine in their respective roles. Nobody acts. They simply react and interact with each other and all that Remton captures in his non-stop, single take.

This is why Remton also gets high marks for the kind of creativity he displays in Damgo, which plays like beautiful poetry on screen. And he does not rely on talent alone in piecing this movie together. He also puts in a lot of hard work to this film. Though no one is credited for editing in the movie, I can imagine a lot of pre-editing work done prior to the shoot. It obviously required a lot of planning and preparation because no one can afford to make a mistake — otherwise the idea of having one, long single take will be ruined.

I can’t imagine anyone else making another film of this kind and succeeding the way Remton does here in Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria. It’s a film achievement that may be difficult to surpass or perhaps even equal.

To the non-Cebuano speaker, damgo means dream. The damgo in the title of this film represents various meanings since we all have different dreams.

Like in the case of Remton, his finished film product is the fulfillment of what must be every other director’s dream, which is to be able to make a movie in one single take.

And since he tackles the plight of the poor and manages to touch the issue to the very core, it must also be his dream, as with most other concerned Filipinos, to see our population finally freed from the shackles of poverty.

So that we don’t see another Eleuteria, who has to put at stake her own future for the sake of her family’s dream for a more prosperous life and in the process risk her personal safety living through a nightmare of uncertainty in a strange, foreign land and in the arms of a man she may never learn to love. Surely, no young girl would nurture this kind of dream.

Aside from Best Picture and the nomination of Remton for direction and screenplay, Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria is also nominated in the following categories:

Best Actress — Donna Isadora Gimeno

Best Supporting Actor — Gregg Tecson

Best Supporting Actress — Lucia Jeuzan

Best Cinematography — Christian Linaban

Best Production Design — Kaloy Uypuanco

Best Music — Jerrold Tarog

Best Sound — Vanya Fantonial

Cebuano film wins Jeonju Special Jury Prize (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=686309&amp%3BpublicationSubCategoryId=51)

By Maria Eleanor E. Valeros (The Freeman) Updated May 15, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments

CEBU, Philippines - Out of 12 different films from various countries around the world, the Cebuano full-length film “Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria” (The Dream of Eleuteria) was chosen to receive the Special Jury Prize Award in the International Competition Section of the Jeonju International Film Festival in South Korea.

This was confirmed recently by its director Remton Siega Zuasola who informed that the Jury was composed of highly respected filmmakers, film scholars, and film critics who have shown their admiration for the said work through their citation.

“For the Special Jury Prize, our choice goes to a work which embodies with acute sensitivity, humor and compassion, the plight of a family faced with impossible choices; a film that through its spirit of formal and technical experimentation enables us to gain new awareness of the relationship between north and south, between the self and the collective, between the epic and naturalist’s storytelling.

For these reasons, we bestow the 2011 Jeonju International Film Festival JB Bank Awards Special Jury Prize to “The Dream of Eleuteria” by Remton Siega Zuasola,” the said citation read.

Jeonju International Film Festival or JIFF is now on its 12th year, Zuasola added. “It has continued to rise as one of the most important film festival in Asia that focuses on showcasing the works of the best filmmakers around the world.”

He mentioned that JIFF is his first-ever attendance on an international film festival. “They invited me to attend the festival for eight days with my airfare and accommodation all taken care of. It is also my first time to compete against other filmmakers in the international stage, so it was quite frightening at first but when I get to meet the other competing directors they are so friendly and very supportive too,” Zuasola shared.

“But I wouldn’t have survived the festival without the support of some Filipino directors who can be considered as veterans in international festivals who were also there exhibiting their works too. They gave me tips and tricks on how to give my best every time, and to always think of our country and make the people back home proud.”

Moreover, he shared that while in Jeonju, he has met a lot of Koreans who have been to Cebu or have long planned to spend their vacation here. “Honestly, I am flattered that they like Cebu and its people so much. Cebu is quite popular in Korea. Todo promote jud dayon ko sa mga other Koreans nga nagplano pa moari sa Cebu. Hitting many birds with one stone ba.”

With regards to the film, Zuasola said he is quite surprised that the Koreans laughed at most punchlines in the film. “They like the film so much. Daghan pud maka-relate didto daw. During question-and-answer portion, after each screening, daghan jud kaayo sila mga questions. I think it’s a good indication nga interested jud sila sa film.”

The next stop of “Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria” is the Gawad Urian Awards which is slated on May 17. “Sa tanang mga pelikula nga nominado karong tuiga, our film maoy pinakadaghan og nominations. Ni-total og 10 nominations all in all. I’m so overwhelmed kay naa pa jud pakapin - ang nomination sa “Ang Katapusang Bagting” nga ako pud ang director sa Best Short Film Category,” an obviously excited Zuasola further mentioned.

Awards night would be aired over Cinema One on cable TV.

JIFF’s link to its website is http://eng.jiff.or.kr/a10_jiff/05_awards01.asp.

The film with “Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria Kirschbaum” for a full title (about a mail-order bride) is originally written by poet/fictionist Maria Victoria “Bambi” Beltran in the Sinugbuwano (Cebuano) language but was translated by Jad Conde and edited by Cora Almerino.

10 "priority" rivers of the DENR shows signs of improvement. and two of them are from cebu.

DENR: Water pollution in 10 ‘priority’ rivers down
04/21/2011 | 05:35 PM

Water pollution in 10 of the country’s “priority" rivers declined during the first six months of the Aquino administration, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said Thursday.

DENR chief Ramon Paje said the level of water pollution in the 10 rivers, measured by the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), decreased to 26.08 milligrams per liter from July to December last year from 28.84 milligrams per liters during the same period in 2009.

A high level of BOD, which measures the amount of oxygen consumed by microorganisms in decomposing organic matter in water, means that there are more bacteria that deplete the oxygen in the body of water for other forms of aquatic life.

The 10 rivers where DENR observed a decrease in water pollution were the Meycauayan River (Bulacan), the Marilao River (Bulacan), the Bocaue River (Bulacan), the Calapan River (Oriental Mindoro), the Anayan River (Camarines Sur), the Iloilo River, the Luyang River (Cebu), the Sapangdaku River (Cebu), the Balili River (Benguet), and the Paranaque River.

Paje attributed the decline of water pollution in these rivers to his department’s “Adopt-an-Estero" program, where the DENR partners with private companies to clean up waterways.

A total of 77 corporations, including GMA Network, have already extended resources to DENR to clean up the country’s waterways. - Andreo C. Calonzo/KBK, GMA News

Business, gov’t leaders sign deal

FOR leaders of Cebu’s business community, the signing of the memoranda of agreement and cooperation among stakeholders of the Public-Private Partnership for Better Infrastructure (PBI) signals the “beginning of dream.”

Gordon Alan Joseph, president of the Cebu Business Club (CBC), said getting civic leaders, chamber organizations, local government leaders and national government agencies to come together meant they all had the same goal to make Cebu better in terms of infrastructure.

The PBI is an initiative that aims to broaden participation in the allocation and implementation of investment in infrasucture to supporrt economic development and poverty reduction.

It will be implemented by the Research Educational Institutional Development (Reid) Foundation, a policy research and advocacy group. It will work in partnership with the CBC, which sees infrastructure development as key to making Cebu more competitive.

Aside from members of the business community, government leaders were also present to support the project.

Projects

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, who chair the Metro Cebu Development Board and Regional Development Council, respectively, were each given time to present their infrastructure development strategies.

Rama said his goal for Cebu City is to improve the South Road Properties, coastal barangays and revitalize the downtown areas. He also wants to balance development for upland barangays by making sure development does not harm environment and making sure Uptown Cebu is progressive.

Garcia, for her part, said that since she is on her last term, she opted to show them what she has done in office, such as the asphalting of provincial roads, upgrading of provincial bridges to concrete, upgrading of provincial hospitals and her electrification and water system projects.

She thanked the private sector for their initiatives, saying the kind of cooperation they have given the government is the reason for Cebu’s being number one.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Assistant Secretary Benito Bengzon and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Planning Service Director Melvin Navarro were also present to give their messages of support.

Bengzon acknowledged that for tourism to grow, “seamless travel” should be provided through investments in horizontal infrastructure such as airports, seaports, roads, bridges, water and power.

Optimistic

“We are optimistic that the collaboration between and among local governments, Congress, business community and the DOT, DPWH and DOTC (Department of Transportation and Communication) for better tourism infrastructure will result in accelerating economic development,” he said.

For his part, Navarro shared some “good news” with those present, by announcing that Central Visayas has the highest allocation from the department’s annual budget.

He reported that after an accident led to the death of a group of Iranians along the Transcentral Highway, they visited the site and found some safety requirements lacking.

He said P30 million has been set aside from the department’s road safety fund to make improvements on the Transcentral Highway.

Navarro said it is their hope that all national roads and bridges can have the quality and safety standards comparable to those of the neighboring Asean nations such as Malaysia and Singapore.

Cebu BPO stakeholders to pool ideas to actualize IT roadmap (http://www.philstar.com/SubCategory.aspx?publicationSubCategoryId=108)
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated May 17, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - Stakeholders of Cebu Business Process Outsourcing and Information Technology (BPO/IT) are expected to put their heads together in “Actualizing Cebu’s BPO-IT Roadmap” in order to capture a huge chunk of the expected US$250 billion industry by 2016.

The formulation of the roadmap is one of the priorities during the upcoming BPO/IT conference next month, as part of the major activities of the Cebu Business Month (CBM 2011).

BPO/IT conference chair Jerry Rapes said that Cebu should move double-time in sustaining its attractiveness to the world’s outsourcing sector, as other destinations are also catching up, and may largely threaten Cebu’s potential.

“If we put our acts together it is possible that Cebu can get at least US$25 billion of the US$250 million market by 2016,” said Rapes.

According to Rapes Cebu should have an effective roadmap in BPO and IT sectors, in order to sustain its attractiveness, and strengthen its position as a globally acknowledged investment destination for BPO and IT.

The time is now, he said as the Philippines has already over taken India especially in the BPO-voice (contact centers) services.

However, Cebu should not be complacent being the Center for Excellence in this area, as a lot of Cities not only in the Philippines, but around the world are also working hard to get their share in the multi-billion-dollar and growing BPO/IT industry.

Cebu will initially develop the five critical areas in the sustaining the industry which is expected to bring wealth in the economy, these are; climbing from the voice-service chain and move up to the high-value, high-yielding Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO); effectively formulate Cebu as a strong brand for BPO and ICT, and strengthening the human resource pool—to include the commitment; constant development of Cebu’s academe sector; building proper infrastructure for the future (as the industry thrive in global connectivity), and also encouraging the local techno-prenuer in engaging into BPO and IT related businesses, that includes paving the way for mature Venture Capital market in Cebu.

To held on June 8, 2011, the BPO/IT event dubbed “Cebu’s Roadmap for Sustaining Growth in the ICT and BPO,” aims at focusing discussions mainly on the newly crafted and launched ICT and BPO Roadmap in coordination with Tholons and the Cebu Investments and Promotions Center (CIPC).

“The event aims for a consensus among top executives and decision makers on how to support and realize this three to five-year roadmap,” Rapes said.

Part of the event, is also to push the program called “Developers Connect” or DevCon, in partnership with the Ayala Foundation, which aims to gather the IT geeks in Cebu, and recognize their talents and creations.

Today, the Cebu BPO/IT sector is employing over 50 thousand people, still a little percentage from the over 500 thousand total BPO/IT workforce nationwide.

Rapes said if Cebu will unite and put their hands together in this noble cause, there is no doubt that it could surpass the target of getting US$25 billion out of the US$250 billion market in the BPO/IT sector globally.

“Let us capitalize on our advantage. Let us grow the 50 thousand directly employed in this sector. We have the potential, let leverage on this,” Rapes said. (FREEMAN)

Happy hours ahead for tourism industry, say experts
The upcoming holiday season is expected to heal India's bleeding aviation sector
Samiran Saha
New Delhi

The ongoing year would be a bonanza for the travel and tourism industry as passenger traffic to popular destinations in India and across the globe is likely to increase by 35 to 24 per cent as compared to last year.

According to sector experts domestic tourists would be in the vicinity of 400 million while those traveling for holidays abroad would be about 10 million.

Every year, experts said a new destination becomes the hot favourite, and this year it is Cebu in Philippines. “Last year it was Egypt and Turkey but because of political unrest in the country tourists have not shown much interest for these destinations. Instead South Africa, China and Sri Lanka are the favourite hotspots for the Indian traveler,” Subhash Goyal, Chairmam, Stic Group told TFW.

Eton plans Sentosa-like development in Cebu

http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/companies/11277-eton-plans-sentosa-like-development-in-cebu

Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:01 Miguel R. Camus / Reporter

LISTED real estate firm Eton Properties Philippines Inc. is considering the acquisition and development of a 35-hectare beach property known as Coral Reef in Mactan Island, Cebu into a high-end mixed-used project inspired by Sentosa Island in Singapore.

In an interview with reporters, Eton president Danilo Ignacio tagged the plan as a “priority” project. The move comes as Eton sets to launch new projects, most recently its first luxury condominium in Eton Centris in Quezon City called Ascent.

Eton’s plan to develop the Mactan property also marks its first concrete step to diversify into tourism.

Based on earlier news reports, Coral Reef is owned by Eton affiliate Philippine National Bank (PNB). Both companies are controlled by billionaire Lucio C. Tan.

The said property is about three times the size of the nearby Shangri-La Mactan Resort & Spa, in terms of land area.

“We want to make this into a very high-end development,” Ignacio said. Eton, he noted, has been approached by international firms, including a Singapore-based group, for possible management contracts.

“It will be inspired by Sentosa Island,” Ignacio added, referring to the popular island resort in Singapore featuring high-end hotels, a theme park, casinos and shopping outlets.

International investors in several instances had expressed their interest to develop the Coral Reef property, but no deal materialized, according to previous reports. The said property was foreclosed by PNB in 2005 after its original owners were unable to meet their obligations, according to reports.

Ignacio, meanwhile, said Eton expects to comply with the Philippine Stock Exchange’s minimum public ownership requirement of 10 percent by the deadline set at the end of this year. Eton has public float of 5.6 percent.

The company is also continuing the development of its 12-hectare Eton Centris mixed-use project in Quezon City with the construction of Ascent. The three-tower condominium units will be sold from P2.9 million to P11 million.

Eton recently reported that first quarter net income rose 7.4 percent to P199 million on revenues that grew to P946 million, up 2.6 percent.

Eton shares were unchanged at P3.30 each on Tuesday’s close.

I have an idea. cebu is becoming a BPO hub. most of the BPO personnel comes from the middle class. A few comes from the lower class. so i propose that english pronunciation classes be taught in the public high school to give them a chance to enter the BPO industry with this middle class people in college will pursue their respective professions and the lower class or the financially unstable could get a shot at relatively high paying jobs such as a BPO personel. I really believe that this will also strengthens Cebu's hold on the BPO industry worldwide.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the decline on the quality of the english language in cebu started when pilipino was introduced in our schools. thus limiting the time spent to learn english kay gidugangan naman ug pilipino subject. of course they have to cut down the number of hours in learning english. ang uban eskuwelahan that used to have a daily english subject gihimo nalang mwf or tth kay gi insert ang piliipino aka tagalog curriculum. secondly i over haul nila ang english curriculum dinha sa atoa. siguro maayo mag start ta sa conversational english dili anang kinaraang formal english instruction.

hahaha my favorite cove too...di nako pohon pwede ka trespassing diha, mahal na nya ni kayo ang beach nga yano ra nako kayong sudlon.. hehehe! hope they would keep the development of the beach front as natural as possible, i also hope they would keep those natural cantilevered rocks sa kilid sa beach, it has lots of good memories, nindot pod kayo layat layatan kay lawom og tin-aw kayong tubig... mao nalang baya ni nga cove nabilin sa mactan which still has its natural beauty...:)

Well BPO jobs needs a formal bachelor degrees of four years that is why only 10 percent of Cebu's labor force are qualified to BPO. For a non-working class family, It's expensive to bring your son/daughter to a four year degree courses especially if they came from far-flung mountain barangays. Also our economy should not rely only to BPO but we should encourage light or heavy manufacturing, mining, agriculture and tourism. We should improve our educational system further and should encourage technical courses. Unfortunately, we can't gain substantial foreign capital and technology because our constitution prohibits foreigners to own/lease land and business without a Filipino partner, The 60/40 ownership provision in favor of Filipino investor is like you are extorting the foreigners to give the share to Filipino investors.

We should amend the constitution now or else we will be left behind by our neighboring countries.

no bai.. BPO's now hires college level and even high school if you have the qualities they need and passed the trainings. However, there are accounts that requires four year degrees but in my experience since our company do Pre-Employment Screening Process for BPO's, some are prepared to tweak the rules as long as the applicant is a Class A..

I know that some BPO companies hires college level and high school graduates but my point is that many prospective workers are not suitable of PRO jobs because of inadequate English proficiency, and lack of office skills that is why in every 100 prospective workers, only 10 will be accepted. So the remaining 90 should not be unemployed and must have a job. To maximize the remaining 90 unqualified to BPO jobs should have a chose either in manufacturing, agriculture or tourism by amending the constitution to allow full ownership of foreigners of businesses and factories so that our cheap labor force will be maximized. Our country have a potential to gain of amount of US$15 billion FDI per year but the constitution discourages the foreign investors to invest Philippines but instead they prefer Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Indonesia.

even with the high demand of the BPO's other industries will always have its share of the talent pool... however, currently there is not much demand now for the manufacturing industries due to the slackening global demand due to the lingering effect of the financial crisis on 2008-2009 which is being exacerbated by the Japan Earthquake..

As to your question of constitutional ban on 100% Foreign ownership of companies which had been an issue since Ramos time, but the Filipino people continue to oppose the amendment of the constitution due to distrust of the previous presidency.. let us see now if PNOY could be able to pull the strings..:)

Ok ra ko ani... kay as we know grabe sad baya ang abuso sa mga tawo diha na lugar.. Imagine grabe kaayo na kabaho na lugar diha..

But of course it should be done humanely. Relocation and Assistance to the settlers must be complied first. However, if the government had already done this, then Mayor Rama must make the political will to do it as planned. :)

In my opinion, bilib ko niya, at least naa syay political will alang sa kaayuhan. Its about time na sab nga malimpyo na ang mga kasapaan sa syudad, usa sa solusyon ana mao ang pagpapahawa anang mga namuyo sa kilid kay sila ra man sab ang numero uno nga maghugaw-hugaw sa sapa.

Mayor Rama is just doing what is due...When those people "choose" to inhabit in a place where it is not rightful for them to stay, they are actually aware that sooner or later this could happen.

If every mayor in Cebu will just always concede to what these people will ask them, then these people will take this a sign of weakness. And Cebu will always be so enticing to those who want to leave their farms and see the neon-colored lights of the city.

It is always a dilemma for the mayor...And it is a gargantuan decision to make...So, I say, kudos to Mayor Mike. This move won't just clean up Cebu City, but also a challenge to those settlers who were evicted...Most of them do have TV's, celphones, even can afford to have more than two children and are just plainly irresponsible.

We have existing laws on this. And we should implement it fairly.

A somewhat related question I got from the net that I want to share here:

Question :A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track. The train is coming, and you are just beside the track interchange. You can make the train change its course to the disused track and save most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way?

DETAILS IN HERE (http://qna.rediff.com/questions-and-answers/a-group-of-children-were-playing-near-two-railway-tracks-one-still-in-use-while-the-other-disused-only-one-child-played-on-the-disused-track-the-re/15218560/answers)

I am sorry for being a bit harsh. If we have to grow as a community, then we really have to do what is right and obey the law. It useless to say that those people were sacrificed, because in fact, it is the taxpayers that are sacrificing much.

I personally don't have any objection on giving relocation site or any monetary assistance to those who were evicted. But then again, I personally also do not want that this kind of assistance will be abused again by vultures. If only we can pinpoint who are those who really deserved to be assisted...If only.

The squatters were given enough time to move. Some are professional squatters. Wa sila gusto sa relocation kay layo. They were first offered compensation pero gamay ra kuno. That is similar situation in removing the 38 squatters families in my property in Bogo. Mayor Rama is correct let them sue.
Sa akong pangagpas ngano ipademolish ang mga squatters, kay mao man ang osa sa major contributing factor naka ingon sa baho dihang dapita. Osa na sa major rason wala mangabang sa Boulevard tungud sa baho gud dihang dapita. Instead of sea breeze, lapok ug CR breeze nu-on. :ohno: :bash: :bash: :bash:

Official: Limited funds force DOT to prioritize tourism promotions
By Mia A. Aznar

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

WITH just P500 million allocated for advertising, foreign obligations, international fairs and trade missions, an official of the Department of Tourism (DOT) admitted that the limited budget compels them to be creative in getting the market they are after.

DOT Assistant Secretary for international tourism promotion Benito Bengzon Jr. told reporters that the amount covers all consumer promotions and the cost of organizing familiarization tours.

With the amount, Bengzon said they have to prioritize which market gets the bigger share.

Rather than compete with the more successful tourism campaigns of Association of Southeast Asian (Asean) neighbors such as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, Bengzon said they have to choose areas of promotion where they can be more competitive, such as travel fairs.

Bengzon said that they get strong support from the private sector when they organize familiarization tours.

For now, he said they are prirotizing the promotion of destinations in Manila and Cebu.

He said the biggest market is still Korea, which hosts the largest tourism fair, followed by the United States, Japan and China.

Bengzon said they are also trying to tap emerging markets such as the Middle East, Russia and India, although he admitted they only have P15 million to spend for the Middle Eastern market and even lower for the others.

The DOT considers tourism a major economic driver for the country, expected to create jobs and reduce poverty.

Bengzon noted that the National Statistical Coordination Board reported 3.4 million were directly employed by the tourism sector, accounting for 9.5 percent of the total employment.

He also pointed out that numerous studies have shown that each tourist has the potential to create one direct job and stimulate indirect job creation in otheer sectors such as in agriculture, manufacturing and services.

“With the target visitor arrivals of 6.3 million by 2016, the tourism sector would create an additional four million jobs,” Bengzon said.

Tourism arrivals reached 3.52 million last year, with a 17 percent growth and was considered the highest so far.

For the first two months of 2011, he said the visitor count continued to show an increase of 18 percent.

“The numbers reveal that we have been largely unaffected by the ongoing Middle East crisis and the recent earthquake in Japan. We estimate our visitor arrivals to expand by a modest five percent to hit 3.4 million by the end of 2011,” Bengzon said.

School to build boutique hotel

By Katlene O. Cacho

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

TO help ensure enough workers for Cebu’s tourism industry, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) recently announced the plan to build its own boutique hotel to serve as training ground for its tourism students.

USPF president and trustee Dr. Alicia Cabatingan said on Saturday the construction of the Southern Skies Boutique Hotel is meant to help bridge the gap between the academe and industry requirements.

“This is one of the bold projects the school is undertaking this year. Despite the drop of enrolment, we see that this facility would help the school produce quality tourism graduates for our tourism industry,” Cabatingan said.

New program

She said the facility will also complement USPF’s new program called the Institute of Tourism and Hospital Management (ITAHM), the umbrella program for courses like Bachelor of Science (BS) in Hotel and Restaurant Management, BS Tourism Management and BS Travel Management.

The Southern Skies Boutique Hotel is a P60-million, three-storey facility that will house lecture and laboratory rooms, a wellness spa room, dining hall, bar, suite, deluxe and function rooms and a function hall that will also be open for public use.

USPF vice president comptroller and trustee Geronimo Sta. Ana said the project, envisioned by the school two years ago, will help improve tourism and hotel and management courses, which are among the popular courses in Cebu and the rest of the country.

He said that aside from engineering and information technology courses, tourism-related courses are among the top preferences of high school graduates because of Cebu’s booming tourism industry.

Sta. Ana, however, said that although the country produces a lot of tourism graduates every year, the industry also has a high turnover as most of them leave for abroad after gaining experience working in tourism establishments here.

“The launching of the new program as well as its facility would somehow help fill the gap between the kind of graduates we produce versus the industry requirement as well the continued supply of globally competitive manpower for the industry,” Sta. Ana told Sun.Star Cebu.

Skills

Sta. Ana said the curriculum will emphasize industry-based skills and competencies; international standards and practices, as well as address “market imperfection issues.” He said it will also offer enrichment programs with linkages with Australia, Europe, Asia, America and Canada.

The institute also prepares the graduates to become competitive in different areas of tourism like food and beverage, front office, travel accounts, airlines, housekeeping, resto bars, tour operations and ship course.

Sta. Ana said they also tapped industry leaders in different areas to serve as consultants on the project.

Former tourism undersecretary Phineas Alburo, who is also an ITAHM consultant, said Cebu needs a continued supply of manpower for its tourism industry to support the increasing arrivals of both foreign and local tourists and opening of more rooms with the country’s approval of an open skies policy.

even with the high demand of the BPO's other industries will always have its share of the talent pool... however, currently there is not much demand now for the manufacturing industries due to the slackening global demand due to the lingering effect of the financial crisis on 2008-2009 which is being exacerbated by the Japan Earthquake..

That's the problem right now for the manufacturing industries because for almost four years after the financial crisis has started, still demand from US, Japan, and Europe is weak and manufacturing industries should tap the Chinese and Indian markets in order to survive in a long-term basis.

As to your question of constitutional ban on 100% Foreign ownership of companies which had been an issue since Ramos time, but the Filipino people continue to oppose the amendment of the constitution due to distrust of the previous presidency.. let us see now if PNOY could be able to pull the strings..:)

Noynoy will not amend the constitution because he is the part of the oligarchy especially his own family's Kamag-anak Inc. who are the big beneficiaries of constitutional ban on 100% Foreign ownership of companies and he don't want to alienate his own family and the Lopez family who owns the ABS-CBN that his mother and his younger sister have a grant of gratitude. Also, Noynoy is an lackluster president worse than Erap for me, at least Erap proposes to lift the constitutional ban on 100% foreign ownership of companies but he was disposed by the oligarchs because he was a threat of their survival. Noynoy has do nothing so far.

So in this case, as to your proposition;

We should amend the constitution now or else we will be left behind by our neighboring countries.

It is apparent to you that it is not possible then under PNOY's government.. then we can say for now its closed... and hopefully wait for the next government to act.. :okay:

Well that's the reality, it's unlikely under Noynoy administration to amend the constitution BUT it doesn't mean that we should close the proposition but instead we should lobby the Noynoy administration through SSC to amend the constitution to allow foreigners to own business and lease land or else we will left behind by our neighboring countries. At least through SSC, Noynoy may listen to us and will think twice whether to amend or not.

For me, mas kampante ko if Manila will be the top tourist destination in ountry after all it is our capital. Manila should be our soul, the image of our nation so sakto ra para nako nga Manila should be the top tourist destination same with Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta and I hope will include Manila. Phuket is second after Bangkok, Penang is second after KL, Bali is next after Jakarta and Cebu is next after Manila.

Waterfront Cebu set for P300M renovation

http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=685580&publicationSubCategoryId=108

CEBU, Philippines - Waterfront Philippines Inc., (WPI) is spending P300 million for the three-phase major facelift of its flagship hotel Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

WPI vice president for special projects Weslie Gatchalian announced the multi-million-peso renovation of its largest hotel establishment, starting with the physical improvement of its lobby and wash rooms, convention center facility, and other service outlets inside the hotel.

According to Gatchalian, this year starts with exciting times for Waterfront, re-enforcing its position as the all-in-one entertainment and accommodation complex in Cebu.

“We are extremely excited to embark on this multi-million-peso renovation project because this will further enhance our product and service offerings that will eventually yield to better guest experience and revenues,” he said.

After the three-phase renovation will be completed next year, the hotel is also planning to renovate its 170 standard rooms by 2013.

The 560-room hotel, the largest hotel facility of the WPI chain of hotels, is capitalizing on the growing interest of both domestic and global MICE (Meetings, Incentive, Conference, and Exhibition) market.

Because of this, the second phase of the renovation project, will be dedicated to further improve its 16,000 square-meters Convention Center, of which a dedicated entrance for the convention facility will be installed.

Gatchalian said the budget will be sourced out from internally-generated funds of the company.

Also, Gatchalian bared plans to improve its mezzanine to give way to PAGCOR’s expansion plan within the hotel, of which the entire mezzanine area will be utilized.

“Our lobby will be grander and more luxurious than it is now. It will be the first time Waterfront will be renovating its lobby in over 10 years—a feature of the hotel that repeat guests have grown to appreciate and identify with. It is both challenging and exciting prospect,” said Waterfront general manager Marco Protacio.

WPI through its Waterfront Hotels and Casinos brand name is so far the largest Filipino-owned chain to hotels in the Philippines today. It operates five first class hotel-casino properties located in the major cities in the country.

Its properties include; Manila Pavilion Hotel & Casino, G-Hotel by Waterfront in Metro Manila, the two properties in Cebu Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, and the Waterfront Airport Hotel & Casino Mactan, and the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao.

Cumulatively, the group runs close to 1,600 guest rooms, and employs a total of 1,670 employees, and has over 13,500 square meters of convention and gaming space.

Last year, the company’s un-audited financial statements registered P1.8 billion in gross revenues, with gross operating profit of P656 million and a net operating profit of close to P100 million.

Its flagship Cebu City Hotel contributed 41 percent of the company’s over-all gross revenues as of 2010. (FREEMAN)

Cebu launches crackdown on illegal seashell trade
PATERNO ESMAQUEL II, GMA News
Article posted May 18, 2011 - 04:36 PM

In Cebu – home to one of the most diverse concentrations of seashells in the world – local authorities have seized truckloads of endangered seashells that were meant to be sold and shipped abroad over the last two months.

In the latest in a series of raids on illegal seashell traders, local authorities seized around P2 million worth of endangered seashells and other species from the residential compound of 59-year-old Kalali Daigal Sabteri last April 27.

The confiscated items include nine sacks of Tridacna shells, three boxes of murex shells, three sacks of sponges, a box of sea corals, and four baby sharks, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) provincial chief Ricky Neron told GMA News Online in a telephone interview.

All species of Tridacna or giant clams are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The Philippines is a signatory to the treaty. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has classified at least one murex species under the “lower risk" and “near threatened" category.

Overharvesting, habitat destruction, and pollution continue to pose threats to Philippine seashells, according to a 2003 study by marine biologist Adonis Floren. In this slide show, GMA News Online presents some of the seashell species prohibited or regulated by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)

The series of raids was mandated by the Cebu Provincial Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force, which was formed through a provincial executive order to curb illegal marine activities in Cebu. So far, the group has made five raids and more are planned, highlighting the seriousness of the problem on illegal possession and trade of endangered seashells in the island.

Selling seashells

Located in the Visayan Sea – one of the biggest and most productive fishing grounds in the Philippines – Cebu has a decades-long history of large-scale seashell trading, according to a 2003 study. (See box)

Thriving seashell trade leaves poor behind

Tourists are flocking to Cebu not only for its beaches but also for its thriving seashell industry, according to a 2003 study by marine biologist Adonis Floren.

“Souvenir shops are scattered all over the island, selling shells and shell by-products," Floren said in his study entitled “The Philippine Shell Industry with Special Focus on Mactan, Cebu." Produced for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the study was supported by the United States Agency for International Development.

Floren noted that many of the export-oriented seashell stalls are found in Barangay Punta Engaño – the site of four of the five raids conducted by the Cebu Provincial Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force to curb illegal marine activities in the province.

An environment advocate and writer based in Manila, Anna Oposa, raised the alarm on what she called the “plunder of Philippine marine life" in several letters to government agencies and the media early this year. In particular, she brought to the attention of authorities the trading activities of the Cebu-based Orcullo Enterprises, which allegedly ships endangered species to the US-based company Shell Horizons Inc.

Oposa, the daughter of prominent environment lawyer and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Antonio Oposa Jr., asserted in her letters that Shell Horizons violates local and international laws on the possession and trade of marine resources. She said one of the species that Shell Horizons sells is the Tridacna gigas, which is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN.

“The company Shell Horizons appears to be collecting, exporting, and selling seashells, corals, giant clams, and other marine species from the Philippines," Oposa wrote in her letter to Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) assistant director Benjamin Tabios Jr. dated April 11.

Oposa cited a provision in the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998 that does not allow “any person or corporation to gather, possess, sell, or export ordinary, precious, and semi-precious corals, whether raw or in processed form, except for scientific or research purposes."

The Fisheries Code also prohibits the collection of rare, threatened, or endangered species, including some varieties of seashells listed in the CITES and banned by the government.

Orcullo: ‘That’s a lie’

On its website, Shell Horizons describes itself as America’s “largest wholesaler of quality seashells and ocean products," many of which are found in the Philippines, such as capiz shells. Previously, the company’s contact information said Shell Horizons “is located in Clearwater, Florida, USA, and on the islands of Bahamas and the Philippines." Shortly after Oposa released her letters and media statement in late April, however, the website replaced the Philippines with “Indo-Pacific Islands."

Weeks after Oposa raised the alarm on Shell Horizons' allegedly illegal activities, the company changed a portion of its contact information. (Screen grabs from Shell Horizons website)

Oposa said she has written to Shell Horizons about her concerns but has yet to receive a reply. Requests for comment from Shell Horizons for this story went unanswered.

According to the CIDG’S Neron, initial findings on the latest raid in April led investigators to Orcullo Enterprises as the exporter of the seized items. Without disclosing his sources of information due to the ongoing investigation, Neron added that initial leads point to Sabteri, whose house contained the seized items, as a supplier of Orcullo.

Priscillo Orcullo, president of Orcullo Enterprises, confirmed that his company exports seashells to Shell Horizons but denied trading endangered marine species.

“That’s a lie," Orcullo said in a telephone interview with GMA News Online. He said stringent regulations, both in the Philippines and in the United States, prevent exporters from shipping endangered marine species. “I never load banned items to the United States," the company president asserted.

Orcullo admitted exporting rare marine species when it was still allowed in the 1970s, but said he stopped the trade when the government banned the practice.

He also denied keeping close ties with local suppliers whose houses were raided. He described Lourdes Ibag – the barangay captain of Punta Engaño who was the subject of the first task-force raid in March – only as a friend and as a colleague in the shell exporting industry. As for Sabteri, the subject of the latest raid in April, Orcullo said, “I only know that he is one of the big exporters here."

Shipments to Shell Horizons

In her letter to BFAR’s Tabios, Oposa said two bills of lading found online trace two shipments to Shell Horizons from the Orcullo Enterprises based in Burgos St. Mandaue City, Cebu. One of them is a 5,808-kilogram shipment dated September 21, 2008 while a more recent entry dated September 28, 2009 shows another shipment weighing 6,156 kg.

“To do this legally, Shell Horizons would need several permits from the local government units, and national government agencies," added Oposa. “In this regard, may I respectfully request your good Offices for information on the permits given to Shell Horizons Inc., if any?"

Asked to comment on May 12, over a month after the letter was sent, a staff member of Tabios told GMA News Online that the BFAR official has yet to reply to Oposa’s query.

Oposa also wrote letters to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and one of its attached agencies, the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB). In response, PAWB director Theresa Mundita Lim referred Oposa back to BFAR.

Lawyer Annaliza Vitug, chief of BFAR’s Fisheries Regulatory and Quarantine Division, said that aside from Oposa, three other persons including a foreigner have written to BFAR regarding the activities of Shell Horizons.

Vitug told GMA News Online that she has alerted the BFAR regional office in Cebu about the issue but the national office has yet to receive a reply, most likely due to the ongoing investigation.

Violation of international laws

In her letter to BFAR, Oposa said Shell Horizons faces possible violations of international laws including the Lacey Act, a United States law that prohibits “trade in wildlife, fish, and plants that have been illegally taken, possessed, transported, or sold."

So far, two foreigners have been convicted in US courts for smuggling marine species from the Philippines in violation of the Lacey Act.

In 1999, Peter Leventis of Florida was convicted along with his company Greek Island Imports for smuggling “internationally protected corals and seashells" from the Philippines to the United States, the US Fish and Wildlife Service reported on its website.

More recently, German national Gunther Wenzek pleaded guilty to charges of smuggling 40 tons of exotic corals from the Philippines into the US in 2009. Marlito Nolledo Guidote II, who was then a project adviser for the United States Agency for International Development, described Wenzek’s charge and guilty plea as a landmark case because the smuggler was known to have showcased Philippine corals abroad.

The Philippines belongs to the Coral Triangle along with Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and the Solomon Islands, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Covering an area of six million square kilometers, this is considered the global center of marine biodiversity that holds 76 percent of the earth’s coral species and 58 percent of tropical marine mollusk species, which include seashells.

Understaffed ports

BFAR’s Vitug said endangered seashells and other marine species may have slipped through the country’s secondary or inter-island ports because of an understaffed quarantine force, brought about by the reorganization of the bureau under the Fisheries Code in 1998.

She said the Department of Budget and Management has not approved the hiring of new staff to fill the vacancies in the regional offices for quarantine officers, whose tasks include the screening of prohibited cargo.

“Lumalakas ang loob ng [illegal traders] kasi alam nila na undermanned kami," Vitug said.

Just this month, authorities foiled what Vitug described as the “boldest attempt" to smuggle endangered marine species out of the Philippines so far. On May 11, Bureau of Customs officials confiscated two 20-foot container vans loaded with stuffed marine turtles, black corals, and seashells, according to a report on GMA News TV’s “State of the Nation."

Vitug said the cargo – which included endangered shell species such as the Tridacna squamosa and helmet shells – came from Cotabato and arrived in Manila aboard a Super Ferry ship early this month. “Malakas ang loob ng kumuha nito kasi isinakay sa cargo vessel," she noted.

Boxed, sealed, and packed inside the container vans, the cargo was allegedly misdeclared as rubber on the ship’s manifest, according to Vitug. She said an informant tipped off authorities about the vessel that carried the endangered species.

In many other cases, Vitug said illegal shipments that pass the screening at secondary ports make their way to international ports, from which they are brought to other parts of the world. The marine species seized in Manila were supposed to be brought to China and Europe, according to the “State of the Nation" report.

How do these shipments pass the stringent screening at international ports? “They have a way of packaging it na hindi made-detect sa X-ray machine or sa airport," Vitug, who posed as a buyer of endangered seashells in Cebu in 2009, quoted an illegal trader as saying.

Disrupting marine food chains

Vitug expressed concern that the illegal trading in seashell is done “in broad daylight" in residential areas in Cebu. She noted that the people behind illegal seashell trading in the province were also the ones who peddled endangered marine species before the Fisheries Code banned the practice.

“Bakit hindi pino-prohibit ng local government eh alam nilang bawal ‘yon?" she said.

The unabated collection and smuggling of seashells from the Philippines severely disrupts life cycles in the marine ecosystem, said BFAR senior marine biologist Ludivina Labe in an e-mail interview with GMA News Online.

“Seashells are among the major players in this web of life," said Labe. She explained that seashells provide food, shelter, and protection from predators to other reef inhabitants. “[The] decimation or loss of seashell [populations] … would result in ecological imbalance," she said.

Labe warned that the illegal trade in seashells will have adverse effects of “exponential" proportions to other species that depend on the marine food chain.

“The population that will bear the brunt of it all is the primary consumers – humans," she said. – with reports from Karlitos Brian Decena and Suzette Dalumpines/YA, GMA News

CONGRATS! Camotes Island!, CONGRATS! Cebu!

UN honors Cebu town's disaster awareness plan (http://m.gmanews.tv/story/221007/cebu-town-wins-un-award-for-disaster-risk-reduction)

A town in Cebu province was bestowed the prestigious 2011 United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva, Switzerland last weekend.

Camotes Island's San Francisco town vice mayor Alfredo Arquillano Jr. received the award, which he said was both an honor and a humbling accolade, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

The DFA said the town's "purok system" has made it resilient, by using indigenous knowledge to disseminate critical information and risk assessment, waste segregation, delivery of health services, and related activities at the household level.

Arquillano said he will continue to mobilize the people of his town, as well as neighboring communities, to further improve their resiliency against disasters.

The UN Sasakawa Award recognizes excellence in reducing disaster risk.

Winners are selected among numerous nominees from around the world through an intensive judging process.

From the Philippines, other nominees included Makati City, Saint Bernard town in Leyte, and Albay Governor Jose Salceda.

"The nominees carried out internationally recognized action that contributes to the goals and priorities of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005 - 2015," the DFA said.

For 2011, the focus of the award was on local action in line with the UN's "Making Cities Resilient" Campaign.

Organizers said the criteria for the award emphasized sustainability of projects despite resource constraints, and putting people first.

Other stakeholders which were recognized during the awarding were North Vancouver, Canada; Santa Fe, Argentina; Bhubaneswar, India; the Coordination Center for Natural Disaster Prevention in Central America (CEPREDENAC), and the Pakistani Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA).

The Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 is a global blueprint for disaster risk reduction efforts during the next decade.

Its goal is to substantially reduce disaster losses by 2015 - in lives, and in the social, economic, and environmental assets of communities and countries. — LBG, GMA News

You'd be surprised if you go to Pta. Engano. The people there look like your ordinary marginal fisherfolk and very dark from staying under the sun, but they actually own some mansions and very nice houses there! These are the same people who got rich from exporting shell and marine products way way back from the time of the golden cowrie and the gloria maris shells.

SM Hypermarket opens (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/business/2011/05/19/sm-hypermarket-opens-156432)

SM Hypermarket opened in Mandaue City yesterday its 26th outlet. A top official of the company said they will be opening four more Hypermarkets this year.

SM Hypermarket external vice president Robert Kwee said in a media briefing yesterday that the opening of the SM Hypermarket Cebu is “a testament of the company’s optimism in Cebu’s economy and its people.”

He said the Cebuanos’ purchasing power, although different from residents of Manila and Davao, is “good” and the company itself is optimistic that this new concept of retail would do well here.

Thriving

Kwee said Cebu’s economy is thriving, which is why they decided to pour in investments such as malls and hypermarkets here. “We are bringing our retail outlets closer to the community,” he said.

The SM Hypermarket operations started in 2011 in response to the consumers’ “need for a holistic shopping experience.”

The company said the new retail format, which is known as a “hypermarket retail format,” is to combine the features of a supermarket with those of a department store.

The aim is to provide the consumer with a one-stop shop where most shopping needs will be satisfied “all in one go.”

SM Investment Corp. (SMIC) converted underperforming warehouse club branches of subsidiary Pilipinas Makro Inc. into SM Hypermarkets. SM Hypermarket Cebu which was the former Makro Mandaue, sits on a 7,000 square meter shopping area that houses about 70,000 items.

Apart from the huge grocery area, the shopping center also houses a drugstore, food court, hardware, home solutions and bills payment.

With the opening of the SM Hypermarket here, Ricardo Castro, regional operations manager of SM Hypermarket said they are confident to grow by 25 percent to 30 percent for their ho-re-ca (hotel-restaurant-canteen) category, the main strength of the store, because of Cebu’s booming tourism industry.

Retail

“This store will give Cebu market ease and convenience when shopping,” Castro said. He emphasized that the hypermarket is a retail store.

SM Hypermarket Cebu is the second hypermarket in the Visayas after Iloilo. Kwee said that company plans to open another hypermarket in Cebu at J Mall on A.S. Fortuna St., Banilad sometime this year.

J Mall is the first mixed-used development venture of Everjust Realty Development Corp., a family corporation headed by Justin Uy, founder and president of Profood International Corp. The SM Hypermarket would the anchor tenant of the mall.

The other three hypermarkets that will open this year will be in Metro Manila.

Expected investment for each new hypermarket is at an average of P100 to P200 million, according to Kwee.

SMIC’s retail group grew by seven percent or P31 billion in sales for the first quarter this year. Its net income for the period amounted to P913 million.

SM Retail opened three new stores in the first three months this year bringing its total to 142 stores, consisting of 40 department stores for the non-food group; 102 for the non-food group, of which there were 30 supermarkets, 43 SaveMore branches, 25 hypermarkets and four Makro outlets.

I was there during the opening..

Anyway i overheard conversation of some bigwigs of the SM Hypermarket which i believe top officials of the company were there for the opening, that so far this is one of the largest opening crowd they have for an SM Hypermarket opening..

S&R earned P/ 2Million sales during its opening and as far as their estimates is concerned, SM Hypermarket could reach around P/ 3 Million..

I am happy seeing many more people were given jobs with the opening of the first SM Hypermarket in Cebu, seguro mga more than 100....:banana:

Hey Henz, thanks for the images, One Pavillion looks great! the initial thread was deleted and I'm not able to retrieve it. Kindly create a new one along with the details.

It's recently announced that Robinsons will build a 200-room deluxe hotel in Mactan, targeting leisure and convention tourism. No further details available. Is this going to be in Amisa complex or in a different site?

and also, I think I already know the most probable land that SM acquired in Lapu-lapu. It's near Marigondon-Agus, will locate in map. Fooda reportedly also own a lot near the area. :cheers2:

The reason why Mayor Mike was sued by Bimbo Fernandez is because he was not open to a dialogue with the affected residents. Mike Rama even called the people whose homes will be/were demolished as nuisance. Naa man gud na sa UDHA and constitution (i think) nga muhatag jud kag financial assistance and proper relocation site sa mga maigo. Naa jud na sa balaod. And why is that Mayor Mike dili man siya muhatag ana? Anyway, I am not against sa pagdemolish ana kay for their own safety pud na. I am not also saying mayor Mike is not a good mayor. I just dont agree with his stand on this one. Political will is good, pero wala lang dapat shortcut. We should also follow rules. If ang atong gobyerno maoy mag-unaunag lapas sa balaod, labi na sa mga pobre, unsa na man lang.

i just hope mayor rama will continue these serious business inorder for the city to be clean and orderly...

How much more in the next few weeks nga rainy season na?

again bay.. im not against Mayor Mike's move in demolishing those structures.. you are perfectly correct na hapit na ang uwan og kuyaw ang mga taw diha.. but mao man gud ni stand ni Mayor Mike sa mga naigo nga di siya muhatag og financial aid or relocation site to set an example.. demolition of those structures can and should be done right away, its just that he will not be giving anything to our poor brothers.. i think ang main argument ani (IMO) kay nganong di man muhatag si Mayor Mike.. :)

Instead nga i spend ang money pra matabangan ang Cebuanos in general.. Aha niya i plano gasto? Useless city hall band, lavish renovation of his office, unnecessary parties.. all of which ky pra lng jud sa iyang convenience.

Naay mga tawo diri dli lng jud mg huna2x og weigh sa things kng unsay fair pra sa tanan.. Tungud lng ky feel nila nindot og dpat jud tangtangon kay eye sore. Legitimate or sa dli... Hatagan sad jud ntawn nimo og saktong treatment ang mga tawo oi.. Salig kay pobre? Dli lalim..

Ibutang kunu inyo self sa ilang situation.. I came from an urban poor family og dli lalim ang situation na you feel like anytime mawad-an kag panimalay knowing nga squatter ka lng. and its definitely not easy na muhawa lng.. naa diri imong friends, naa diri nanginabuhi. All people deserves fair treatment. Swerte mo naa moy inyoha pag abot.. Unlike sa family where I belong na we need to work 2 or 3 times harder just to get our own place.

Di nako malalis nga sa kaayuhan pod sa mga lumulupyo ang gibuhat ni Rama pero kani man gud iyang paet nga style nga sirit ratsada dayon nga di huna-hunaan ug tarong before buhaton. Naa man gud sa balaod nga dapat naay relocation site ug compensation nga andam na before demolition. Kung lawyer siya, why did he ignore the laws?

Kung gipangandam lang unta nang relocation site ug compensation, wa na unta'y dakong yawyaw ug kinihaay ron.

I agree with u bai. Di lalim mahimong pobre oi. These kids who will be affected didn't choose to live in this place kung naa lang silay kapaingnan. In our desire to have a beautiful city, let us not close our eyes to the poor among us who needs help. But having said that, I still agree w/ the demoltion to protect the safety of the residents too. Ako lang hangyo ni Mayor Mike is to give consideration to our poor brothers who needs help so that they can have a home somewhere else. But ofcors, proper screening should be done to ensure that only the rightful benificiaries will be given help. Let us strive to have a city that is not only beautiful outside but in the inside as well. :):)

WOW I love this news. Can't wait for Robinsons, Megaworld, Eton & SM to make a big splash in Mactan. My dream is to have Mactan's economy prosper fast to rival that of Cebu City. Then we will have 2 mega cities.

:cheers2:

In this way, han-ay pa nga tan-awon, desente na sila og puloy-anan ug luwas pa sila's peligro.

bay you are exactly right.. living here in the city may improve or worsen those peoples quality of life.. as you've said, daghan bad sides sa city.. pero daghan pud bad sides sa probinsya.. but who are we to make decisions for them.. if they do think na mas makaayo sa ilaha ang pagpuyo sa siyudad, who are we to stop them.. regarding drugs, sakit, etc., sa probinsya naa puy starvation, no access to proper education.. ako lang untang message kay you cant blame them for making these choices.. and sa akoa lang sang tanaw, dili man pud tanan nianhig siyudad nibati ang kinabuhi.. you may be surprised nga mas maayo pa ilang kinabuhi jud diri kaysa probinsiya.. hinoon bay, di ko expert ani.. opinion lang intawon ni nako... :)
