More sacks of black corals seized in Cebu

MANILA, Philippines—Weeks after the Bureau of Customs foiled a plot to smuggle out of the country over P35 million worth of dead sea turtles and other endangered marine life, another illicit shipment containing sacks of rare black sea corals was intercepted in Cebu.
Customs officials suspected that the P15 million worth of black sea corals shipped from Manila and seized in Cebu on May 19 were somehow linked to their earlier catch of dead rare sea turtles, black corals and sea shells shipped from Cotabato.
In a report to Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez, Nestorio Gualberto, director of Custom’s Enforcement Security Service said his team was still finding out if the newly seized rare marine species were connected with the previous contraband from Cotabato.
The bureau touted it as its first biggest catch involving endangered marine species.
Marine experts have estimated that about 7,000 hectares of “reef complex” were destroyed when poachers harvested 161 sea turtles and over 21,000 sea shells and black corals off the waters of Cotabato.
The Customs police discovered the most recent illegal shipment of black corals on board MV Lorcon Manila vessel owned by the Lorenzo Shipping Corp. following a tip that it was being transported as “scrap metal,” said Gualberto.
A check on the shipment in coordination with Dang Go, inbound sales coordinator of the shipping firm, upon arrival in Cebu last week showed that the cargo contained an assortment of sea corals, he related.
At least 168 sacks or 375 pieces of the endangered marine species, identified by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources as “black sea fan” coral were accounted for, he said.
The shipment was consigned to Cebu Junk Shop, which turned out to be fictitious following an investigation on the incident, he added.
The law prohibits any person or corporation to gather, possess, sell or export ordinary, precious and semiprecious corals whether in raw or in processed form. The penalties range from six months to two years in prison and a fine of as much as P500,000.
Black coral is among the species protected by the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
According to Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez, the illegal trade in black corals “is being fueled by the demand of the multibillion dollar marine ornamental industry for exotic decorative species and the increasing popularity of coral-accented jewelry and fashion accessories.”

Something was indeed done by Cebuanos in part, as they were seized in the Port of Cebu! But even if they are also seized here, these cannot be returned to life. The root is where they harvest them too. Although I am saddened by this, I am also relieved that somehow, these things don't just go by unnoticed, and the fact that it has been intercepted is a good sign at least.

Ayala unit to construct more BPO buildings
taken from; www.bworld.com.ph
CEBU CITY -- Asian i-Office Properties, Inc. plans to build a third mid-rise business process outsourcing (BPO) building either at the Asiatown IT Park or the Cebu Business Park.
Francis O. Monera, president of Asiatown developer Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp., said they will start construction as soon as lease contracts are signed for at least 70% of the leasable space at eBloc Tower 2.
Asian i-Office is a special purpose vehicle created by Ayala Land, Inc.
and Cebu Property Ventures, a subsidiary of Ayala Land affiliate Cebu Holdings, Inc.
As of last week, Mr. Monera said four of the nine levels allocated for BPO companies at eBloc Tower 2, Asian i-Office’s second BPO building project, have been reserved.
Negotiations are ongoing for the lease of two more levels.
Mr. Monera declined to identify the companies that are interested in leasing the property, but said these were BPOs which are planning to expand its Cebu operations.
“Hopefully, we can close the deals within this year. Once we reach 70% [of occupancy], we will launch another BPO building either in Asiatown or at the Cebu Business Park,” he said.
Asian i-Office topped off eBloc Tower 2 last week and targets to complete the building by the third quarter of this year.
The P800-million ebloc Tower 2 is a 16-storey BPO building that will provide additional leasable space of 26,500 square meters. It is the sequel to eBloc Tower 1, also located within Asiatown, which has been fully leased to JP Morgan Chase & Co. and NCR Cebu Development Center.
Mr. Monera said the completion of eBloc Tower 2 will “open the door for more investments and job opportunities in the area.” Asiatown employs around 20,000 workers and, together with Cebu Business Park, hosts 76% of the BPO locators in Cebu.
Emilio J. Tumbocon, senior vice-president and VisMin Group head of Ayala Land, said the eBloc Tower 2 is one of Ayala’s investments in the leasing business that will be launched this year. The company will launch 13 new projects with a total gross leasable area of 200,000 square meters across the country this year, he said.
“We are looking forward to very strong growth by increasing our leasing portfolio over the next five years,” he added.
Asiatown last year saw the construction of seven buildings. Three more, including eBloc Tower 2, are under way. -- Marites S. Villamor

Wolfranz May 25th, 2011, 08:13 PM Plaza is a Spanish word related to "field" which describes an open urban public space, such as a city square.[1] All through Spanish America, the plaza mayor of each center of administration held three closely related institutions: the cathedral, the cabildo or administrative center, which might be incorporated in a wing of a governor's palace, and the audiencia or law court. The plaza might be large enough to serve as a military parade ground. At times of crisis or fiesta, it was the space where a large crowd might gather. Like the Italian piazza, the plaza remains a center of community life that is only equaled by the market-place.
from wikipedia.
So i presume that the place where Magellans cross is also called a plaza. unsa kaha pangalan kung plaza to dd2. heheh
Yes. It is originally Plaza Rizal (because of the statue of the National Hero once sitting in front of the city hall) but now Plaza Sugbo.

CEBU, Philippines - The consultants of the Asian Development Bank-Cities Development Initiative for Asia proposed a temporary public transport route at the South Road Properties that must be established by 2013 to provide access to early phases of development while the main line of the Bus Rapid Transit is pending.
The interim public transport route shall only be temporary because it will be developed into a full BRT once the “main street,” initially from Bulacao to Talamban, is established.
The proposed SRP-BRT will be based on the designs and system of the main street because both will later be connected.
The ADB-CDIA in the final report of the phase II of its Transport Strategy Development Study for the Cebu SRP, came up with an interim public transport proposal because the BRT main street will roll out in 2014 yet while the developers at the SRP are expected to build the mall, condominiums and other developments by 2013.
The developments at the SRP are seen to increase travel demand by early 2013.
The temporary public transport route shall address the traffic and accessibility problem.
The ADB-CDIA, in its report, said the SRP transport system may adopt a three-phased approach which comprise of three different approaches depending on its practicability and feasibility.
The first phase will be a bus service that would operate as a conventional bus service connecting the North Terminal – SM- Downtown – SRP, which may potentially extended up to Talisay City.
The interim phase, which is the High Quality Public Transport Route, is more advanced than the conventional bus service. The High Quality Public Transport Route might be upgraded to full BRT or may be a model for public transport improvement in areas where BRT cannot be established.
Whether to put an a temporary public mass transport system at the SRP earlier or just wait for the establishment of the full BRT line now lies with the Cebu City government.
The SRP-BRT, once completed, is expected to serve over 50,000 passengers per hour that are expected to come to SRP once SM builds its mall here similar to Mall of Asia in Manila and once Filinvest develops its Citta di Mare.
The ADB-CDIA projects that SM Mall and Filinvest developments will each likely generate over 100,000 trips per day.
These projected increase in the travel demand can be accommodated by the BRT which is initially estimated to cost around USD60 million with an operating cost of USD6 million per annum. This estimate was done during the first study.
ABD-CDIA consultants said the costing of the project will be provided after the full-blown feasibility study which is expected to commence by November this year. — (FREEMAN

@Antediluvian - From Barangay Babag 1 proper proceed for an uphill climb to RCPI then sulod mo sa RCPI compound (naay gate on this cemented road). By the way the gate is closed after 7:00 PM. Subay lang gyud ining karsada until mahimo na lang gyud ni siya nga foot trail. Kini nga trail kay mao pud ni agianan sa mga motorcycles nga mag motocross diha sa Babag every Sunday. You can follow the trail by even looking at the motorcycle tracks. Later, you will enter an area nga medyo forested wherein dili na nimo makita ang entirety sa sky. Along the way naa kay maencounter nga crossing nga naay kawayanan (hope kaila ka ug butong nga kawayan). One trail goes along the crest of the mountain while the other one goes downhill and take this trail which is lined with gmelina trees. Pulos na gyud ni siya downhill until you will reach a group of houses (around 4). Ask lang asa ang Tata-an ug mao na siya ang place. Specific place ang Tata-an. Lugsad, maoy known name sa place which is upper portion of Kinyasan, Bonbon. Before going downhill, most of your hike will be at the crest of the mountain wherein makita nimo ang both sides sa Cebu City ug ang Cantipla-Bonbon-Taptap-Kan Irag area. Take a closer look na lang sa wikimapia pud. Best is I will go with you! Here is the link

(The Freeman) Updated May 26, 2011
CEBU, Philippines - The consultants of the Asian Development Bank-Cities Development Initiative for Asia proposed a temporary public transport route at the South Road Properties that must be established by 2013 to provide access to early phases of development while the main line of the Bus Rapid Transit is pending.

— (FREEMAN

Sleepwalker May 26th, 2011, 05:52 AM ^^Sa akong pagsabot sa news, bai @zub, wala man kausaban sa plano...Take note that the official estimate for the BRT roll out will be on 2014 and needless to say, that during the infra development for the BRT project, there will be changes on the traffic route, since the proposed Phase 1 BRT route will surely be 80% to 100% close at that time.
Kung 2014 ang roll out, so, late of 2012 or early 2013, dapat naa na'y alternative nga route para sa mga public utility vehicles.
And as stated further, nga SRP section will be part of the Phase II, not Phase I, hence in order to connect SRP with the Phase I (main line) of BRT, mao na'ng naa'y temporary bus route.
Nindot pud unta, since ang Mandaue ug Lapu-lapu especially Mactan-Cebu Airport kay wala pa man maapil sa Phase I, kay magdeploy lang sa og buses temporarily.
Sa lang ni'ng pagsabot.
slerz May 26th, 2011, 06:01 AM ^^And 2014 will only be the phase 1 (Pardo to Talamban) excluding SRP route pa so probably mga 2015 or 2016 pa gyud sad mo dagan ang BRT route for SRP. So by 2013 to 2015 or 16, there will be no public transport ang mo cater se SRP which will be operational na due to the completion of Sm and Filinvest. So duha ilang gipili-an para sa TEMPORARY public transport sa SRP of that time frame... Unsa may mas maayo JEEPNEYS? or CONVENTIONAL BUSES? ... Unsa may mas maayo for temporary public transpo sa SRP?
News article ra na nga daghang errors so easy lang mga gengs:D Ma clarify pa nato ni ni Sir Paul sa BRT thread...
bakasaurus May 26th, 2011, 06:06 AM ^^Sa akong pagsabot sa news, bai @zub, wala man kausaban sa plano...Take note that the official estimate for the BRT roll out will be on 2014 and needless to say, that during the infra development for the BRT project, there will be changes on the traffic route, since the proposed Phase 1 BRT route will surely be 80% to 100% close at that time.

Mao sab akong pagsabot bai..
And besides, these are from consultants at ADB-CDIA so it isn't really from our government people lang. This is also one of the same orgs involved with the birthing of BRT. I think this is not to replace BRT but it is part of the things that need to be done to take care of the displaced traffic which will be caused by the implementation of BRT.
So @Zub., chill lang geng (lol)
@The Aiport Bus: Sige lang ko ug pangutana bahin ana sa MCIA thread pero wala pa gyud intawon ko tagda...lol. Hapit na ko muligid og muhilak kay mangluod...lol. Sir Paul, palihug tabangi mis among pangutana..
Sleepwalker May 26th, 2011, 06:08 AM ^^Bai Slerz, I go for conventional buses or e-buses...Kung jeepney man gani, kanang mga e-jeep ra ang pasudlon anha's sa SRP.
CebuMagigger May 26th, 2011, 06:30 AM yea i myt as well prefer to hav e jeep or a conventional bus
jochval May 26th, 2011, 06:36 AM kanang KMK, conventional bus na siya?
Sleepwalker May 26th, 2011, 07:09 AM ^^Yes. KMK is conventional bus..Pero ako unta'ng pangandoy aning temporary bus route kay mogamit sila'g kanang pang urban nga bus, dili na'ng pang long distance nga configuration.
Kana gani'ng bus nga dako og pultahan unya ubos og profile para kung naa man gani pasahero nga daghan og karga, dali ra makarga ug maka-igo gud.

xxxriainxxx May 26th, 2011, 07:28 AM this should be stopped..its so sad na daghan kaayo mo "RAPE" sa atong dagat.everybody should keep a watchful eye...the reason why Cebu is a top tourist destination is because of its dive spots..so if ever maguba ang corals..wala na reason na mag dive2x..less tourists..these bloody idiots should be jailed for life and dapat wala bail..makalagot..:bash::bash::bash:
Not only that. Millions depend on these corals for livelihood. Fish catches will dwindle and millions will be driven to poverty and hunger.
Sleepwalker May 26th, 2011, 07:31 AM RE: On Corals
I say, jailing them is not enough. Why not shove those dead corals in their asses and let them bleed to death.
That's how justice should be served.

From online Cebu Daily News
BRT IN SRP
COLIN Brader of the Asian Development Bank-Cities Development Initiative Asia (ADB-CDIA) presented to the Cebu City Council yesterday a plan to extend the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route to the South Road Properties “to support its economic growth.”
Brader said that the SRP-BRT can also lead to the North Bus Terminal in the North Reclamation Area and can be extended to Mandaue City and the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA). He said they are conducting a feasibility study on the project.
MCIA general manager Paul Villarete, formerly Cebu City's planning office head, said the ADB-CDIA is funding the pre-feasibility study for the BRT proposed at the SRP.
He said the city government may tap other funding institutions like the World Bank (WB) to fund the project implementation.
Villarete said a mass transport system like the BRT should also include the MCIA. The airport would soon have a new terminal building, but this was not enough for passenger convenience. “What good will that be (new airport building) to the passenger if when they arrive there is no ride to Mandaue or Cebu City?”
Villarete said airport management may later undertake a study to come up with a transport system.
Villarete said that a BRT operation in Cebu City is part of the city government's vision for an environmentally friendly and sustainable transport system. Structures would already start to rise at the SRP in 2012, thus the need to provide access to the SRP. /Chief Of Reporters Doris C. Bongcac

hoi adik!
saba oi! giliteral ra pod kayo nimo, kay tungod wala ka kitang gadagan ang tubig, and dili na magstagnant oi naa nay filtering system.. be more imaginative pod gud dik...:lol::lol:
FYI, ang rule of thumb para di mag stagnate ang water sa pool is to turn-over the total volume of your pool once in a day! When we say "turn-over", means ma bag-ohan ang tubig sa pool (or the total volume of water filtered or treated is equal to the total volume of pool water.
Question: pila gyud kaha ka cubic meters ang pool nga makita nato diri?
Para sad dunay idea ang uban nga nagplano maghimo ug ilang pools sa ilang vacation locations ba!

Hehehehe! Naa baya ni isda nga gibutang. Aside from the endemic guppies naa pud gibutang diha nga cherry barb and cardinal tetra. Considering the volume of the pool, mapuno ang pool for one hour lang so kon sige ni siya gaagas then in a day 24 times na ni siya giilisan ug tubig. Actually the water here is the source of the water supply sa Bonbon Elementary School. They tapped the hose directly at the opening of the spring located beneath the tree.

OH No! Piranha is prohibited here in the Philippines. I know a lot of hobbyist here in Cebu having piranha as a pet and in fact one of them gave me 15 pcs of it but I returned that to him. There was even one who was able to breed and have more than a thousand fries and sold it at P300 each for a size similar to the diameter of a sardine tin can. I am planning to place "garra ruffa" or "doctor's fish" which is used in Manila Ocean park and Star City as "fish spa"

I had measured the water temperature only which ranges from 22 to 26 degrees Celcius. For humidity, I do not have a hygrometer but with the presence of trees in the surroundings its practically a mountain fresh air but what I can say is...its practically cold at night because of the mountain breeze. As for the water in the pool I have difficulty in dipping at early morning. Its really very cold. The place is at elevation 500m above sea level according to wikimapia. I had gone to Tagaytay and Baguio City and our place is comparable with Tagaytay considering the mountain breeze that would strike your face. Ang Ayala properties kay tua sa Pung-ol - Sibugay - Sirao area. Our place is owned by the family of my wife.

Two hotels will soon open in strategic areas in Cebu adding 200 more rooms to the island’s booming tourism industry.
James P. Concepcion, Days Hotel Philippines Inc. president, said Days Hotel Philippines Inc. will open two more branches in Mandaue and Toledo Cities. Concepcion said they recently signed an agreement with the local government of Toledo City for the project.
“The structure is currently being built by the local government of Toledo and we will be the operator,” Concepcion said.
Cebu’s hotel and resort sector offers a total of 8,220 rooms according to the Department of Tourism’s survey as of March 2010. Some DOT planners say more hotels should be built to attract more tourists.
Conception said that Toledo City Mayor Arlene Zambo and the city officials decided to set up a hotel in their city to encourage local tourism in their area, which has several eco-tourism sites.
The property will have about 100 rooms, said Concepcion, and will be run under a long-term lease agreement with Toledo City.
Another Days Hotel will open in Mandaue City, which is a franchise branch, said Concepcion. He said the property would also have 100 rooms and would open in October or November.
At present, Days Hotel has four branches around the country, including one in Lapu-Lapu City. Concepcion said they were optimistic about the tourism industry of Cebu and that the new hotels would enjoy good occupancy rates.
“Cebu has become a world-class destination for tourism. It’s because of that that we have designed our new hotels to cater to such international standards. Our Mandaue hotel which will open soon will have three specialty restaurants and is rated as a 4.5-star hotel,” he said.
The hotel chain is improving its Food and Beverage department by offering different cuisines, such as South American cuisine, which they offer in their newly launched Santiago Restaurant in their Mactan hotel.

CEBU CITY -- The Cebu City government is studying plans to develop a light industrial zone within the 300-hectare South Road Properties (SRP) in line with the thrust to attract more Japanese investments to Cebu.
Roberto A. Varquez, manager of the Cebu Investment Promotions Center (CIPC), said in a recent phone interview here that the city government, which had also reclaimed the SRP with the help of the Japanese government, is allotting nine hectares for the industrial zone.
"Whether the city government will spend for the development or undertake the development through other means is still under study," Mr. Varquez said.
The cost of developing the zone has yet to be determined.
Mr. Varquez said an industrial zone was among the components of the original development plan for the reclaimed property.
The SRP, registered as a special economic zone, was conceived to accommodate spill-over Japanese investments from the export processing zones here.
Japanese companies, mostly assembly plants for electronics and audiovisual products, comprise about half of the over 100 locators at the Mactan Economic Zone.
The CIPC, which manages and markets the SRP, is also hoping to bring in Japanese companies that are reportedly considering relocating from China due to changing investment regulations there.
The center now hopes to get technical assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency for a marketing campaign to lure these Japanese companies.
The SRP has, so far, attracted investments from SM Prime Holdings, Inc. and Filinvest Land, Inc., among others.
SM has started the development of its 30-hectare mixed use complex at the SRP, which will be composed of its biggest mall in the Visayas, a convention center, a hotel and a couple of condominium buildings.
Filinvest, on the other hand, will develop 50 hectares, or a sixth of the SRP.

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebu’s business process outsourcing (BPO) industry is growing more upbeat as manifested by the growing number of IT buildings mushrooming in the metropolitan area, with more IT firms indicating interest in locating here.
Recently, Asian i-Office Properties Inc. (AiO) led the topping off of eBloc Tower 2 at the Asiatown IT Park. AiO is a collaboration between Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corporation (CPVDC) and Ayala Land Inc. (ALI).
“Cebu’s booming BPO sector is ripe for the expansion of new and existing IT locators,” said CPVDC President Francis Monera, who added that “the opening of an eBloc Tower 2 will open the door to more investments and job opportunities in the area.”
EBloc Tower 2 is a 16-level office building located in Phase 2 of the Asiatown IT Park. The building sits on a 4,383-square meter lot with an aggregate floor area totaling 34,762 square meters.
The project is a sequel to the eBloc Tower completed in 2009. It is envisioned to become a premier location for BPO, IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) business locators.
Upon completion, eBloc Tower 2 will bring in over 26,500 square meters of additional leasable space within Asiatown IT Park.
Completion of the building is scheduled in the third quarter of this year.
Monera disclosed that the company is already in talks with BPO companies who have expressed strong interest to locate at the building.
Based on initial negotiations he said that 65 percent of the total occupancy of eBloc 2 is now being reserved.
Monera also revealed that AiO is now on the planning stage for a third IT tower and construction will begin “once occupancy rate of eBloc 2 reaches 70 percent.”
“As a developer, we want to contribute to Cebu’s growth by maximizing the potential of the booming BPO industry. To address the continuing demand for office space, we have shifted our strategy to increasing our leasing portfolio, particularly within Asiatown IT Park,” Monera said.
Emilio Tumbocon, ALI senior vice president and Visayas-Mindanao group head, said eBloc Tower 2 is only one of the many investments in the leasing business that Ayala will be launching this year.
He said the company will launch 13 new projects across the country with a total gross leasable area of 200,000 sqm this year.
“With these strategic directions, we will take on new ventures and maximize the potential of the BPO industry, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao areas,” he said.
Based on the 2010 Annual Stockholders report of CPVDC, AiO contributed R11.8 million to the company’s revenues.
AiO derives income primarily from the leasing of eBloc Tower, which was fully leased-out to NCR Cebu Development Center, Inc. and JP Morgan Chase and Co.
CPVDC’s total revenues last year reached R263 million, 21 percent higher than the previous year’s performance. Its net income stood at R164.4 million.

Anyway, ang among planned na climb to Mt. Babag this weekend, May 28 and 29, is postponed. I received an advisory from Sir Jing of Camp Red na kuyaw ang ascent (we are climbing the mountain from Barangay Napo in Guadalupe and not through the Mountain View road) because the mountain's soil is saturated/soaked with water due to the past few days' bad weather.
Will inform you once ma reschedule ang trek.
@Antediluvian - Kun ari mo agi sa Napo then to Kahugan then to Babag, ang route medyo tungason gyud. Actually kon mao ni inyo agian it means nga moagi pud ka sa akong gipuy-an (residence) ron kay taga Sapangdaku man ko. I will be at the farm on May 31 up to June 3, 2011.

By: Paolo G. Montecillo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
12:44 am | Saturday, May 28th, 2011
A UNIT of diversifying conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has acquired parcels of land at the biggest shipyard in the Visayas area.
Keppel Philippines Holdings Inc. said it had sold its 72-percent stake in Keppel Cebu Shipyard Land Inc. (KCSLI) to SMC Shipping and Lighterage Corp.
KCSLI is a company that owns pieces of land and land improvements leased to Keppel Cebu Shipyard Inc. Keppel Philippines is a subsidiary of Singapore’s Keppel Corp. Ltd.
Keppel Holdings said it sold KCSLI because it no longer had operations on the property that the company owned.
The shares in KCSLI, held by Keppel Holdings’ unit Goodsoil Marine Realty Inc., will be sold for a total of P596.2 million.
“It was arrived at on a willing-buyer-and-willing-seller basis, taking into account the fair market value of the property and the buyer’s strategic interest in the property,” Keppel Holdings said in a disclosure.
SMC Shipping is the cargo handling, warehousing and shipping service provider to the San Miguel group. The company said the acquisition was meant to “expand its business interests,” but did not elaborate.
SMC is the biggest food and beverage conglomerate in Southeast Asia. Among its core subsidiaries are San Miguel Brewery Inc., Ginebra San Miguel Inc., San Miguel Pure Foods Co. Inc. and San Miguel Yamamura Packaging Corp.
The SMC group, led by chair Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. and run by president Ramon S. Ang, has been diversifying into heavy industries such as power generation and infrastructure to add to its growth drivers as revenues from traditional sources plateau.
Henz May 28th, 2011, 04:38 AM perhaps this will be used as a platform for its cargo shipping business or could it be that they are planning to enter the shipbuilding/shiprepair industry as well?

EdithB May 28th, 2011, 10:01 AM I had measured the water temperature only which ranges from 22 to 26 degrees Celcius.
Hi Eskeryon, Naa kay kuryente didto sa bukid? How about running water? What is the best way to pump water to a house from a source about 40 ft. downhill?

I just rely at night time sa bonfire and LED lamps and also fireflies pud. Some centrifugal pumps can have as much as 6 ft (20 ft) suction and an outlet discharge head of about 20m (60 ft). Ayaw lang pag pressure tank para dili kalas ug kuryente.

This is the design that won the Fuente Osmena Redevelopment Design Competition sponsored by Michel Lhuillier last year (which I have mentioned here before). The proponents are Architecture and Landscape Architecture students of USC. The execution of the design now depends on Lhuillier, who has a 25-year agreement with the City Government to rehabilitate the park. I have high hopes nga ma-push through jud ni. :)

Bro Slers I went to this place before with my wife, the place was awesome though the theme park is not that impressive. What amazed me is the cable car which is the longest and fastest in Asia, as I was riding on it I feel like my blood pressure is shooting high, but the good thing is the scenic view below where you can see lush tropical forest down below. The view on top when you arrive is just so spectacular. I think if we have investors to develop this in Cebu, this kind of theme park is very possible to attain. But they need to put this in a very mountainous and tree thriving areas in Cebu, cos daghan naman gud bukid sa Cebu nga mga sagbot nalang ang nanubo walay nay dagkong kahoy, though our mountain terrains are superb. Dili bah naa man toy Plano ang mga King nga mag butangan ug cable car from crown to tops that's I heard from previous rumors nakalimot nako asa to nako nabasahan, hehehe

OK sir Paul, we hear you. Thanks for the update. I would really like the BRT to reach the airport but for the time being (we're looking at least 3 t0 5 years for MCIA-connecting CebuCity route to materialize?), dako kaayo nga convenience para sa mga pasahero kung naay BRT-ready HOVs that will ferry people from the airport to the city.
I was personally glad that you were chosen for the Airport Manager position because this will only make it more likely for a BRT to connect to MCIA possible. What about the current royalty of Lapu-Lapu (King and Queen of the Mactan Monarchy), are they supportive of this move?

EdithB May 29th, 2011, 09:35 PM @EdithB - Wala mi kuryente didto.
Thanks for the info Eskeryon. I gravity feed na lang nako from the water tank to the fixtures. Ok ra man siguro ang pressure. Nindot bitaw kaayo ang mga aninipot inig kagabii. It feels surreal when you see it for the first time.
The design for the Fuente Circle looks good. Nice, simple and looks modern. I like the water feature, the hardscape design and the benches. Maybe more trees for shade?

WB must have realized: How Inefficient Free Kaoshiung Buses are managed..
but of course, Very efficiently utilitized during election time even NO LIGHTS NOR PLATES NEEDED.
There are No problems since issues are blamed on those who complained.
There is(are) no responsible person(s) but only Cebu City taxpayers
who are(were) never consulted in the beginning like a referendum.
It is evident that is no agreement with the Provincial government,
neither with the cities of Mandawe and Talisay.
These above entities had agreed with a more modern mode.
Which is more attractive to the amazingly and unstoppable growth of Cebu City landscape.
Manila and Cagayan can have it.
For some reason, Cebu City who collects revenue for the National
government above expectations for decades
refuses and blocks National Transportation offerings.
For the masses, Cebuanos are used to short walking distance in boarding
the exiting like taxi from jeepneys in going to Mom and Pa stores.
Buses are designed to go to work in big Skyrises and support expensive Malls.
Rush hour will be the only time it will be profitable.
Weekends and non-rush hours will expect long waiting time.
We should know in US State of New Jersey, every family is
expected to have a car. Today express jitneys are growing.
The bus drivers were complaining. The people do not care.
Service like frequency, speed, proximity and price only matter.
Take the Bus w/c could be at least 10 blocks away, wait for designated time,
pay more, and then walk another 10 blocks to your destination.
Rainy season and long hot summer days routine will surely
bring memories and dreams "where is my jeepney?"

ECO-JEEPNEY, GREEN TRANSPORT INITIATIVES TO FIGHT
RISING FUEL COSTS - Sen. ANGARA
Senator Edgardo J. Angara expressed his support for the new eco-jeepney program of the Department of Energy (DOE), adding that the program would complement the Green Transport initiative of the Congressional Commission on Science Technology and Engineering (COMSTE), which would help ease the nation's dependence on oil
The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced that a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has been signed with large transport groups, for the eco-jeepney program which will promote the use auto-liquefied petroleum gas (auto-LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG)-fed engines.
The program will aim to convert as many diesel-run jeepneys as possible.
Angara, Chair of COMSTE, identified the development of electric vehicles and green transport as priority projects of the commission for 2011.

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/local-news/2011/05/29/world-bank-bus-rapid-transport-faces-4-risks-158097
This is part of the standard activity that the WB does before the start of any
pre-investment study it funds, called the pre-study risk assessment. this
will identify what are the main risks that has to be addressed during the
conduct of the feasibility study.
Earlier this month, the WB visited Cebu City for a preparation mission on the BRT, which would be the first of its kind in the Philippines.
The report, submitted to DOTC Secretary Jose de Jesus, identified four risks in the implementation of BRT in Cebu. The World Bank is funding the feasibility study for the BRT in the country.
It said a key risk for the project is “the perceived high risk of corruption in the transport sector” and “weak capacity in governance.”
The risks are not specific to Cebu City, though.
of course, the issues of “perceived high risk of corruption in the transport
sector” and “weak capacity in governance,” as stated, are not specific to
Cebu City, but for the country as a whole, and is common to all transport
projects financed by the World Bank, including the LRT extensions in Manila
and the expressway projects in Luzon.
comparatively, the risks in the BRT project are relatively fewer.

I think the proponents have considered some of the weak points of the present condition:
1. Obstructed views of the fountain/monument, axial perspective
2. Too much trees and shade lessening turf growth
3. No proper architectural solution for Fuente as venue for civic activities
So IMO the trees as shown in the walkthrough are enough. There should be a balance between trees and turf. Kay kung puros ra trees nia way sagbot abog kaayo ug init. But I should say, walkthroughs and perspectives (renderings) do not really show specific number and location of trees in projects involving such elements, except if explicitly designed. These paraphernalia are just for presentation purposes, meant to convey or create an impression on how it will look like.

In fairness, it's really hard to tell just from the presentation. I think Fuente is too small an area for civic activities. Cebu has outgrown Fuente. IMO it should just serve as a small park and a landmark and designate another area for civic activities.

Forms venture with Singapore group
By: Doris C. Dumlao
Philippine Daily Inquirer

The Filinvest group has teamed up with a Singaporean firm to roll out starting this year a nationwide chain of budget hotels, adding to its array of tourism-oriented products for different market segments.
During the company’s stockholders’ meeting on Friday, Filinvest Development Corp. president Josephine Gotianun-Yap said a joint-venture company had been set up with the Archipelago group of Singapore, an affiliate of Aston International, to introduce to the local market the budget hotel brand “Fave.” The chain is expected to offer hotel rooms for about $50 a night.
“We have two in the planning process and then there’s a couple of other locations we’re looking at,” Yap told reporters after the stockholders’ meeting.
Yap said FDC was jumping off from the successful launch last year of Crimson Resort and Spa in Cebu, which caters to the upscale market. Two more FDC hotels are under construction—another Crimson hotel in Alabang and the Grand Cenia Residences in Cebu.
The new budget hotel chain would be managed by the joint-venture firm Fil-Archipelago Hospitality Inc. Each of such budget hotels would have about 150 to 200 rooms, Yap said, noting that the “Fave” brand was quite popular in Indonesia.
“We’re targeting middle-level businessmen plus it will be located in very good locations. It’s [low] budget, clean and efficient,” she said, adding that the upcoming hotel chain would also be suitable for families. “The locations can also be for leisure travel. We’re expecting people who want a nice bed, clean sheets and the price is just right.”
She said the launch of “Fave” would complete FDC’s hotel offering for different market segments, which also include Crimson for the high-end market and Quest Hotel, a three-star hotel in Mactan, Cebu.
FDC, the holding arm of the Gotianun group, is a conglomerate with interests in property, banking and sugar industries. It has also mapped out a program to build four liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled power plants across the country with an installed capacity of up to 1,800 megawatts over the next five years.
In 2010, FDC grew its net profit by 79 percent to P4.94 billion from the previous year on the back of a 37-percent rise in revenues to P21.02 billion. For the first quarter of this year, net income hit P1.1 billion, up 20.3 percent year on year.
“We are pleased with the healthy growth trajectory and strong performance of our businesses, which we have strategically positioned to take advantage of the strong economic fundamentals of the country,” Yap said.
“Our sustained efforts to strengthen our financial position across all subsidiaries have prepared us to take on more challenges in the future. The proven resilience of our core business and our new investments in high-growth areas will establish the new platform for FDC’s future growth,” she said.
The power business is seen growing to be the third leg of FDC’s business in the next five years after the property and banking units.

Cebu biggest market of Mindanao (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/business/2011/05/29/cebu-biggest-market-mindanao-158178)
Sunstar Online
Sunday, May 29, 2011
DESPITE its vast tract of agricultural lands, Cebu remains the biggest buyer of all types of produce from Mindanao.
Lawyer Antonio Partoza Jr., president of the Mindanao Fruit Industry Development Council Inc., said the Visayas, particularly Cebu, plays a very important role in the food value chain for Mindanao, particularly in the processing of fruits. He said the region is also one of the biggest market destinations of Mindanao fruits.
Speaking before the First Visayas-Mindanao Fruits and Vegetable Market Encounter last May 19, Partoza said Mindanao supplies pineapples, bananas, papayas, durian, mangosteen, lanzones and jackfruit to wet markets and supermarkets here in Cebu and other cities in the Visayas.
Partoza said 81 percent of the bananas produced in the country come from Mindanao. He said the banana industry is among Mindanao’s top export winners, with yearly revenues amounting to $450 million, providing jobs and income opportunities to thousands of growers and workers.
Shipment
“One of the biggest lakatan (a kind of banana) producers in North Cotabato is regularly shipping tons of this product each week to Cebu,” Partoza said.
On vegetables, Nenita Seno, regional coordinator of the High Value Crops Development Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA), said that although Dalaguete, Alcoy and Boljoon are considered the vegetable basket of Cebu, their production is not enough to meet growing demands.
Seno said Cebu continues to buy vegetables from Mindanao because there is always a lack of supply to meet local consumption.
As an example, Seno cited how Cebu produces 4,498.40 metric tons of eggplants annually, much lower than the annual consumption of 14,411.94 metric tons. She said Cebu produces 1,574.97 metric tons of tomatoes yearly but the consumption is 3,391.05 metric tons. The province also produces 1,344.20 metric tons of ampalaya, much lower than the yearly consumption of 5,298.51 metric tons.
Seno said vegetable production in Cebu dropped in 2010 because of the long dry spell followed by months of heavy rainfall.
Marcelino Remotigue, president of the Northern Mindanao Vegetable Producers Association Inc., said the government and agriculture industry must make farmers “bankable” so their living condition will improve while they are producing food for the country.
Help sector
Remotigue said the agricultural sector, if fully developed, can produce millionaires and uplift the condition of farmers. He said there is a big demand for agriculture because of increasing population, demand for organic vegetables, and increasing demand for vegetables for export.
Remotigue said the government should help the agriculture sector by providing enough farm-to-market roads, consolidation centers (formerly known as bagsakan), cold chain facilities, organizational support, flexibility in financing schemes and the establishment and dissemination of product standards.

ferny123 May 30th, 2011, 04:10 PM Just a realization. I am a student at USC-TC and i have noticed a lot of contsructions in the BanTal road. Especially near USC-TC all the way to Talamban. This is good, but not good for the BRT. I suggest the ban regarding development along bantal road must be implemented again or an ordinance about limiting develpments 4-5 meters away from the road be implemented. BRT right of way must be prepared and set up as soon as possible in order to avoid futher hindrances in the future. If im not mistaken there are already more than 10 midrise constructions in the BanTal road alone which are very near the road.

On a macro scale, yes, but then we are talking about a park, wherein grass is as essential as trees. What good will a park make if it's all trees and no grass. It's not all about aesthetics but also utility.
My idea is to redistribute some of the obstructing trees out of the park and transfer them at portions of Osmena Blvd where there are no trees. There should also be trees along the sidewalks of the roundabout. I stroll the boulevard everyday, and I should say trees should be planted from the area near Watson's down to Mercury Drugstore, same as to the other side.

no matter how much upgrade the city will spend on fuente, kon gamiton more than its capacity like during sinulog, mahapsay gyud ang grass, mga tanom ug trees sa park. duna man tay parks n recreation commission, sila ang mu huna2x ahead of time kon how much damage an activity can create that entails thousands of people before granting a permit. as suggested by many around here, create a new venue for pulic entertainment dili na sa fuente

Contractors to help province beautify Capitol-Fuente road (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=691598&publicationSubCategoryId=107)
By Gregg M. Rubio/WAB (The Freeman)
Updated May 31, 2011 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - After the Province of Cebu offered to do the entire beautification works of the one-kilometer stretch of Osmeña Boulevard from the Capitol building to Fuente Osmeña junction, at least nine contractors signified interest to help at their expenses.
Governor Gwendolyn Garcia met nine contractors, who have been implementing several projects in Cebu Province, to ask for their support in the beautification project of Cebu City.
The governor earlier assured the beautification committee, headed by philanthropist Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung, of the Capitol’s support.
Garcia said there is no need to use government resources as the funds shall be raised “in a most creative and innovative manner.”
According to her, when she met the contractors, they immediately get assigned respective block to do civil works, improvement of gutters and other works in accordance with the specifications designed by the committee.
The contractors are WTG Construction, Duros Construction, Socor, OR Sarmiento, Pragmatic, Barsteel, Rovilla Construction, Maningo Construction and Supreme ABF.
Garcia said the contractors showed the “true spirit and pride” of being Cebuanos.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will take care of fixing the drainage system, said the governor.
She will also be meeting the suppliers for the street lamps.
According to Garcia, the Province of Cebu will take care of the enhancement of the portion of Escario Street fronting the Capitol building, the design of which is inspired by American colonial period.
The contractors and the province may start anytime soon with target date of completion before the 443rd founding anniversary of the Province of Cebu on August 6, she added.
There will be one-look in architectural ambiance in the sidewalks and center islands of the entire stretch of Osmeña Boulevard from Capitol to Plaza Independencia.
The overall plan of the project includes fixing the sidewalk cracks and the path will be transformed into a brick walkway.
Both sides of the road will be lined with decorative lampposts to be embellished in the center island.
Business establishments along the boulevard and around the park were reportedly committed to redesign their facades for a Spanish colonial era look.
The Cebu Beautification Movement Inc. targets “zero vendors” around the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda and along Osmeña Boulevard. (FREEMAN)

1. DPWH will take care of fixing the drainage system
2. new street lamps
3. cebu province will take care of the enhancement infront of the Capitol building, the design is inspired by American colonial period
4. one-look in architectural ambiance in the sidewalks and center islands of the entire stretch of Osmeña Boulevard from Capitol to Plaza Independencia

HEROES SHOULD BE LARGER THAN LIFE - NOBODY KNOWs HIS BIOMETRICS EVEN PIGAFETTA
Pigetta's account was that Magellan was killed by a poison arrow (shot by who ...a mysterious historical sniper?)
TODAY WE WANT HIM TO LOOK THIS WAY UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP AND HIS WAR STRATEGY.
The other way .. who cares..Any artist who shows otherwise is non-nationalist or revisionist.
Every macho Cebuano wishes our hero to look like this "hero". The undoubtedly first anti-Imperialist victory.

Zuburbia May 31st, 2011, 12:51 PM Just a realization.
Urgent kaayo ni para nako!!! Para ninyo sd unta!
kayasa bitaw grabe wa jud masunod ang proper setbacks sa atong mga buildings from the road..mao jud nay problema metro cebu ang implementation og sakto sa building code, ang city planning og OBO way klaro...suya lang ko diris city of manila lagpad kayong sidewalk, usahay mao mao kalapdon sa 2-lane nga road... sa cebu city mao jud nay kuwang sa kasagaran natong mga dalan, proper sidewalk...ganahan man kaha ta mapedestrian friendly nga city and less cars, nganong sa pagkakaron wala man ta nangandam, lahi may nahitabo (attention: Cebu City planning og OBO). :ohno:

leylander June 1st, 2011, 05:09 AM before i cn use this word to everyone in my environment it myt be some mean word so here it goes... where did the word ubec came from? my friends jus starts calling cebu ubec. it kinda sounds kewl :) but is ubec offending considering that ur changing ur city's name? jus askin... :)
AFAIK, the term UBEC, first became widely used when a few independent Cebuano graffiti artists with the same passion and interests came together. The 'group' sort of became responsible for the growing popularity of street art here in Cebu City. I think dili na kaayo active ang UBEC karon kay I personally know some of the pioneers ani nga group. Ang magstreet art karon mga 'taggers' na lang kasagaran. Anyways, here are some of the pieces nga produkto sa UBEC. A lot of them are from UP so, usually, political ang nature sa ilang pieces.

now that picture somehow draws me a lot of questions regarding GMA's epicserye Amaya. from which ethnic group does the storyline got its inspiration? is it more ilonggo especially that the characters use the word 'banwa' instead of cebuano 'nasud'?

Hehehe.
The term was popularized by Cebuana writer in English, Cecilia Manguerra Brainard in her story Flip Gothic which is set in, you know, Cebu. Here's part of the story:
"Dear Mama,
Thank you for agreeing to have Mindy. Jun and I just don’t know what to do with her. I’m afraid if we don’t intervene, matters will get worse. Mia, her Japanese American friend, had to be sent to a drug rehab place. You’d met her when you were here; she’s the tiny girl who got into piercing; she had a nose ring, a belly ring - and something in her tongue. Her parents are distraught; they don’t know what they’ve done, if they’re to blame for Mia’s problem. I talked to Mia’s Mom yesterday and Mia’s doing all right; she’s writing angry poetry but is getting over the drug thing, thank God.
There’s so much anger in these kids, I can’t figure it out. They have everything - all the toys, clothes, computer games and whatever else they’ve wanted. I didn’t have half the things these kids have; and Jun and I had to start from scratch in this country - you know that. That studio we had near the hospital was really tiny and I had to do secretarial work while Jun completed his residency. Everything we own - this house, our cars, our vacation house in Connecticut - we’ve had to slave for. I don’t understand it; these kids have everything served to them in a silver platter and they’re angry.
We’re sure Mindy’s not into drugs - she may have tried marijuana, but not the really bad stuff. We’re worried though that she might eventually experiment with that sort of thing. If she continues running around with these kids, it’s bound to happen. What made us decide to send her there was this business of not going to school. Despite everything, Mindy had always been a good student, but this school year, things went haywire. This was what alerted us, actually, when the principal told us she hadn’t been to school for two weeks. We thought the worst but it turned out she and her friends had been hanging out at Barnes and Noble. It’s just a bookstore; it’s not a bad place, but obviously she should have gone to school. We had to do something. Sending her to the Philippines was all I could think of.
She’ll be arriving Ubec on Wednesday, 10:45 a.m. on PAL Flight 101. Ma, don’t be shocked, but her hair is purple. Jun has been trying to convince her to dye her hair black, for your sake at least, but Mindy doesn’t even listen. Jun has had a particularly difficult time dealing with the situation. It’s not easy for him to watch his daughter "go down the drain," as he calls it. He feels he has failed not only as a father but as a doctor.
It’s true that it’s become impossible to reason with Mindy, but I’ve told him to let the hair go, to pick his battles so to speak. But he gets terribly frustrated. He can’t stand the purple hair; he can’t stand the black lipstick - yes, she uses black lipstick - and the black clothes and boots and metal. I’ve explained to him that it’s just a fad. Gothic, they call it. I personally think it looks dreadful. I can’t stand the spikes around her neck; but there are more important things, like school or her health. She’s just gotten over not-eating. That was another thing her friends got into - not eating. Why eat dead cows, Mindy would say. She was into tofu and other strange looking things. For months, she wasn’t eating and had gotten very thin, we finally had to bring her to a doctor (very humbling for Jun). The doctor suggested a therapist. One hundred seventy-five dollars an hour. She had several sessions then Mindy got bored and started eating once again. She’s back to her usual weight, but well, the hair and clothing might scare you, so I’m writing ahead of time to prepare you.
Thanks once again Ma, for everything, and I hope and pray that she doesn’t give you the kind of trouble she’s been giving us.
Your daughter,
Nelia
...."

ivanc June 2nd, 2011, 12:45 AM Cebu City mayor gets threats
CEBU CITY -- Angered by Cebu City Hall's clearing operations along Mahiga Creek, a group that claimed to have links to the Abu Sayyaf Group sent death threats to Mayor Michael Rama.
In a letter sent to the mayor by mail, the sender said they have a relative in the terrorist group who will bomb the city if the City Government will continue demolishing illegal structures near the creek.
The mayor received last May 12 the first letter from a group called Mabolo Creek Boys.
The group told Rama not to demolish their houses, which stand on the banks of Mahiga Creek near Tanchan Compound in Barangay Mabolo.
"Ayaw gyud ug i-demolish, mayor, ha aron way bombing mahitabo diri sa Sugbu. Among pag-umangkon miyembro sa Abu Sayyaf tua sa Basilan. Usa ka text namo muari dayon kato sa Sugbu ug mamomba sa transportasyon, government building, ug populated gatherings (Refrain from demolishing the houses so the city will be spared from any bombing. Our nephew is with the Abu Sayyaf in Basilan and with just one message, he would come here and bomb vehicles, government buildings and public gatherings)," their letter read.
