http://gothamist.com/attachments/jen/2008_01_toilet2.jpg
The DOT explains how the self-cleaning APT will work:
The APTs cost 25 cents to operate, with a time limit of 15 minutes and will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Each APT is climate-controlled and includes a toilet, a wash basin with running warm water, and a mirror. An automated system controls the door and prevents unauthorized entrance, and the APTs are fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
After 12 minutes of use, an acoustic alarm and red flashing lights go off for three minutes before the door opens. Once a user has exited, the APT doors will close and the 90-second automatic cleaning cycle will begin. During the cleaning cycle the interior surfaces of the APT are cleaned and dried. Once the self-cleaning process is complete, a new user can access the APT

Cebu to host international tourism forum in September (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=711201&publicationSubCategoryId=107)
CEBU, Philippines - A tourism official of the Republic of Korea sees Cebu’s hosting of the 11th general assembly of the East Asia Inter-Regional Tourism Forum (EATOF) to bring more active participation from member-provinces.
The Deputy Director of Tourism Marketing of Gangwon Province of the Republic of Korea, Roy Myung Woo, visited the other day at the office of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia.
Woo met with Garcia’s chief of staff, Elizabeth Francia and Provincial Tourism Office in-charge Grace Paulino, to further discuss the preparations.
“This 11th general assembly in Cebu will bring more active participation from member-provinces and this is the best opportunity to experience the local cultures in Cebu,” Woo said.
Eight governors reportedly have confirmed attendance in the EATOF general assembly on September 14 to 17 at the Cebu International Convention Center.
EATOF is a voluntary association that brings together local governments in East Asia to jointly develop the tourism industry.
The 12 members of EATOF are Cebu, Philippines; Jilin, China; Gangwon, Korea; Sarawak, Malaysia; Yogyakarta, Indonesia; Tottori, Japan; Luang Prabang, Laos; Tuv, Mongolia; Primorsky, Russia; Chiang Mai, Thailand; Siem Reap, Cambodia and Quang Ninh, Vietnam.
Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, chairperson of the Provincial Board Committee on Tourism, said they are more than 80 percent complete with the preparations for EATOF and all committees are already in place.
Paulino said they would be renting a simultaneous interpreter’s booth similar to what was used during the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, which would be rented from Manila.
Earlier, Garcia also met representatives of Hyundai-Cebu Inc. who offered the use of 12 latest model-luxury vehicles for the use of participating governors during their stay in Cebu.
Lowell Belarmino, general sales manager of Hyundai-Cebu Inc., said they offered their brand new cars in support to Garcia’s program.
Last year, Garcia attended the assembly held in Quang Ninh Province in Vietnam.
Garcia assumed as leader of the EATOF after Quang Ninh’s hosting.
Because of the goodwill ties, Garcia said Cebu is now enjoying several chartered flights from visiting EATOF member-provinces such as China, Korea, and Russia. (FREEMAN)
Sleepwalker July 29th, 2011, 04:12 AM Search on for Cebu's "best" Highway (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=711206&publicationSubCategoryId=107)

CEBU, Philippines -All are set for the search for the e-Gwen Best Highway in the Province of Cebu in partnership with the Capitol, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
RAFI has partnered with the Province of Cebu in the implementation of the expanded Green and Wholesome Environment that Nurtures (e-Gwen) Our Cebu since 2008.
“We have now the specific criteria, specific guidelines, the same team that will be evaluating plus the representative from DPWH regional office,” said RAFI executive director for integrated development, Rowena Alinsonorin.
The first run of evaluation shall start on August 23 and will run for three months. The awarding will be in December by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia although the prizes have yet to be announced.
Alinsonorin said the DPWH’s cooperation in the highway’s maintenance, cleanliness and road safety prompted Garcia to initiate the search.
The Capitol has been providing grass cutters and vehicles to fast track the beautification of highways.
The criteria of the e-Gwen Best Highway include cleanliness, beautification, trees planted and safety of national roads, main roads and thoroughfares.
Cleanliness means abandoned lots or idle spaces are well-maintained and are free from solid wastes, junk materials and the like. It also means that there are no structures on shoulders in adherence to the provision of the Building Code, and that roads are not used as post-harvest pavements. Also to be included in the evaluation is the absence of dead plants, laundry on waysides and any promotional materials like tarpaulins and posters on trees.
Beautification means vegetation after three meters from the main road consisting of flowering shrubs planted directly on the soil and not on pots, uniformity of public and private establishments in terms of patterns and motifs and enforcement of national law prohibiting the setting up of structures within salvage zones of coastal areas.
Planted trees are of varieties with root systems which grow downward rather than sideward like molave (tugas), kamagong (mabolo), lipote (maigang), alim, lanutan and bangkal.
Safety, according to the guidelines, means properly trimmed trees so as not to affect power lines; and allowing space for vehicles to pull over during emergency; the presence of street lighting infrastructure and painting of pedestrian lanes, curbs and gutters. (FREEMAN)

Mora ug way modaug ug di hiloton ang mga raw scores unya puhon ug mao na siya'y mga criteria, bai! Kinsa kahay maka-buot ug dunay ihayhay sa su'od sa private property nga naa sa daplin sa highway? Bisan ug ibutang tan'g pu'nga nga lapad2x ang easements from highway, maka distract man gyud ug naa'y out of the ordinary nga makita sa sides, IMO.
leylander July 29th, 2011, 05:46 AM ^^
dili ka makaingon ana @Parchie kay lain gyud ug mentalidad ang taga province kay sa siyudad. Naa pa gyud didto ang bayanihan ug solidarity. It's very interesting to note nga kung maagi ka sa different towns on your way to Santander or Malapascua ba ron, you will see locals clearing the sidewalks of grass and watering the flowering plants along the highway. They do it by 'purok/sitio' which makes it even more effective.
in all fairness to the eGWEN project, it is very effective. that is exactly why RAFI has been supporting it. Dako kaayog natabang ang eGWEN sa mga towns...

wakeuptoreality July 29th, 2011, 11:27 AM Innoland's 3rd project launched
CEBU CITY -- The Innoland Development Corporation (IDC) had its groundbreaking ceremony Thursday in Asiatown I.T. Park, in Lahug, Cebu City, for its newest business process outsourcing (BPO) project.
The Link, a 20-storey BPO building defined by modern architectural design, will house 12 floors of leasable office spaces, five levels of above-ground parking, one level basement parking and a retail area on the ground floor.
It will be built in a 1,789 square-meter lot with approximately 1,350 square-meter leasable area.
The continued growth of the BPO industry in Cebu called for the development of Innoland's third project since it formally launched its first, the TGU Towers in Asiatown I.T. Park, in February 2010, Innoland chief operating officer Charles Ong said.
Earlier, the property developer launched the first green hybrid condominium in I.T. Park, Cebu, the Calyx Center. It is a hybrid building inspired by the live, work and play concept with a residential tower on a podium that houses BPO offices, parking floors and retail outlets in the ground floor, while taking the "living with nature" principle with the use of trees for landscapes, rainwater for non-potable uses, and wind with its open channels.
The Link, like its other projects, will take a green, sustainable design principle to respond to the changes of modern times.
The "green concept" has always been a major consideration in Innoland's projects, its marketing director Crystal Chloe Ong said.
Although the concept has yet to be clearly defined by the design team, she said, it would still consider using large operable windows to allow wind and natural light, reducing use of lighting and air-conditioning and dual piping system to make use of rainwater for flushing toilets, among others.
IDC promises not just the business sector with spaces worth the cost, it also assures Cebuanos a market for employment.
IDC was established in 2006 and is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission with an initial authorized capital stock of P20,000,000. It is owned by the Ong family. (Jhay-ar A. Book/Sunnex)

cyberCEBU July 29th, 2011, 11:41 AM Foundation sets sights on revitalization of Osmeña Blvd
Posted on July 29, 2011 by cebudailynews
About P55 million is needed to realize the Spanish-era transformation of Osmeña boulevard in time for the Christmas holidays.
Philanthropist Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung, chairperson of the Beautiful Cebu Movement Foundation Inc., said they need to raise P20 million or 30 percent of the P55 million revitalization budget for this purpose.
Some of this amount will go to building brick sidewalks and colonial lamps in Osmeña Boulevard. Yeung said they plan to hold fund-raising activities like trade fairs and entertainment activities this August.
Yeung said the Capitol and nine contractors are coordinating with each other to implement the projects in a portion of Osmeña Boulevard from Escario to Fuente Osmeña.

CEBU, Philippines - The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) yesterday awarded the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) for passing the international aerodrome standards.
ICAO representative in the Philippines, Inocencio Ynsierto, assisted by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, handed the aerodrome certificate to airport general manager Nigel Paul Villarete during the MCIAA board meeting.
An aerodrome is defined as an area on land or water including any buildings, installations, and equipment for use either wholly or in part for the arrival, departure and surface movement of aircraft.
Ynsierto, in a report over GMA-7’s Balitang Bisdak, said the certificate signifies MCIAA being a Class A airport.
“It is actually the first airport that is certified by CAAP and ICAO so it means that airlines will now be comfortable coming in and operating at MCIAA,” Ynsierto said.
The MCIAA is recognized by the organizations as the leading airport nationwide in terms of air safety compared to other known airports such as the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Luzon and the Davao International Airport in Mindanao.
“Tinitingnan natin ang buong airport compliance. Ang Mactan airport, nag-comply sila, kumpleto kaya na-issuehan sila ng certificate,” he further said.
Villarete was thankful for the recognition as it will boost the image of the airport and several airline companies traveling for Central Visayas would now most likely use the MCIA. — (FREEMAN)

- (BANAT NEWS)

Lee Myung-bak, South Korea’s president, has called on his people to boost the domestic economy by taking their holidays at home rather than jetting off to traditional favourites like Cebu, Guam and Hawaii. His tourism chief has gone a step further and wants workaholic Koreans to take a full (and hitherto unthinkable) two weeks off.

Davao needing advertising push
DAVAO CITY -- The city lacks advertising push to trigger name recall among foreign businesses, an executive of a major shopping mall chain said.
Teresita Sy-Coson, vice chairperson of SM Investments Corp., told participants of the 7th general meeting at the Davao business chamber that the city could pattern its marketing campaign after Cebu City, which for a time promoted itself as an area distinct from the Philippines.
In comparison, Davao is being identified with Mindanao, wherein some areas are grappling with peace and order issues.
Jason C. Magnaye, Davao City Investments and Promotions Center chief, said the city has been gradually shedding off its peace and order stigma although "apprehensions among the businessmen" remain.
Meanwhile, Ms. Sy-Coson said SM is investing in Davao City such as its mixed-use property on J. P. Laurel Ave. that will include a shopping mall and a hotel.
"You have a less stressful environment and it’s good to be working in this kind of environment than what we have in Manila," she said. -- Joel B. Escovilla

Habitat
Press Release
Urban Problems Mushrooming First Ever Database of Urban Solutions Created
More than one and a half billion people in the world's cities will face life and health threatening environments by 2025, unless a revolution in urban problem-solving takes place, according to the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat).
"Cities have the resources to solve problems -- 50 to 80 percent of most developing countries' Gross National Product comes from cities -- but they are not adequately prepared for the huge influx of urban residents," says Dr. Wally N'Dow, head of Habitat.
Solutions to growing urban problems will be discussed at the International Conference on Best Practices in Improving Living Environments in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from November 19-22. The conference, jointly sponsored and organized by the Municipality of Dubai, one of the world's most progressive cities, and the United Nations, will analyze and catalogue the best urban practices -- programs that have worked -- into the first ever "best practices" database. The database will be made available to all national and local governments, and will describe how these practices have been put into effect in cities of both developing and developed countries.
"This database of best practices will become the first stop on the information super-highway for city managers, major local government officials and private urban investors," says Dr. N'Dow, who is also the Secretary General of the Habitat II conference (June 3-14, 1996), the last major UN Conference this century. "The goal of the Best Practices Conference is simple -- to define and organize the best information and success stories for cities around the world in advance of the Habitat II Conference in Istanbul in 1996.
"With more people migrating to cities, and less money for city governments to invest, the only way to
improve conditions is to find less wasteful, more cost-effective urban projects. The database will help both developed and developing countries find the most effective solutions to urban problems."
The Best Practices Cities
Habitat is currently reviewing more than 300 "best practices" nominations from cities in about 80 countries worldwide. For the Dubai conference, 25 successful projects will be highlighted for use as models for future programs in cities worldwide. These 25 practices will also be the first entries into the new database. Some of the cities noted for the best urban practices are:
In North America -- Chattanooga, Tenn; Hamilton-Wentworth, Ontario, Canada;
South/Central America -- Curitiba, Brazil; Bogota, Colombia; Limpio, Paraguay; Managua, Nicaragua;
Europe -- Leicester, United Kingdom; Kuopio, Finland; Vienna, Austria;
Asia -- Cebu, Philippines; Delhi, India;
North Africa/Middle East -- Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE); Alexandria, Egypt; Tehran, Iran;
Africa -- Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Rufisque, Senegal.

wakeuptoreality July 30th, 2011, 02:38 AM Mactan-Cebu airport ‘safest’ in Philippines
The Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) was recognized as the safest in the country in terms of security measures for its operations.
MCIA manager engineer Nigel Paul Villarete said the certification was issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
“I’m very sure that many airlines would be more comfortable using our airport,” Villarete said in an interview.
The MCIA is the second-largest airport next to Manila.
The awarding of the Aerodrome certificate was done during yesterday morning’s monthly meeting of the MCIA Authority board.
CAAP Director General Ramon S. Gutierrez handed the certification to Villarete.
The CAAP cited the airport’s availability of safety manuals and constant safety drills and emergency response team as factors.
Villarete said any failure to sustain safety management measures would result in revocation of their certificate, so they will work hard to maintain their record.
“Since the MCIA is now the safest in the Philippines, it will attract more people to come to Cebu,” said an airport press statement.
He said the certification would also mark the airport’s readiness to be more competitive globally.
Passenger traffic went up from 3.9 million in 2009 to 5.4 million last year, according to the MCIAA.
Meanwhile, Capitol consultant Rory Jon Sepulveda said Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy’s proposal to transfer the international airport to Cordova town is not the immediate solution to the problem of “overcrowding” in the facility.
In a press conference, Sepulveda said it was possible to build the airport on the proposed 3,500 hectares of reclaimed land in Cordova but land reclamation takes time, while an immediate solution is needed.
“Transferring the airport to Cordova is not the immediate solution, is not tomorrow’s solution, is not today’s solution. It might be a future solution but we need a solution now,” Sepulveda said.
Based on the Korean International Cooperation Agency’s (KOICA) air traffic demand forecast, the volume of domestic passengers will rise from 3,841,990 passengers in 2009 to 6,260,047 in 2015.
International passenger traffic is forecast to go up from 920,000 in 2009 to 1,472,301 by 2015. Sepulveda said this problem discouraged some airlines to come in.
Sitoy’s proposal surprised government stakeholders and representatives of the MCIAA who attended the KOICA’s presentation of the master plan for the airport’s expansion.
Sepulveda said KOICA’s study of the 25-year airport expansion is premised on the current MCIA site in Lapu-Lapu City.
He said Cebu province has many options to establish another airport, including a potential site in Daanbantayan town in north Cebu.
wakeuptoreality July 30th, 2011, 02:43 AM ‘Beautiful’ Osmeña Blvd. ready for Christmas
AN Osmeña Boulevard with Spanish-era brick sidewalks and colonial lamps will be finished in time for the Christmas holidays, said Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung.
The chairperson of the Beautiful Cebu Movement Foundation Inc. said a revitalized Osmeña Boulevard is the group’s Christmas gift to the Cebuanos.
“This is also done in honor of Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. who became president of the Philippines,” she said.
Of the target P55-million budget, Yeung said the foundation needs to raise about P20 million more.
In yesterday’s press conference, members announced their lineup of fund-raising activities for August and October.
“The fund-raising (activities) will complement the tourism activities here in August. We wanted to take advantage of the presence of dignitaries and other guests who are coming into the city,” said Janice Minor, head of the foundation’s fund-raising committee.
Since Cebu will host the One Cebu activities next month, they wanted to sponsor a “Domingo sa Sugbu” event at the Fuente Osmeña circle.
The event may include trade fair and entertainment activities, Minor said.
On Oct. 14, the foundation will hold a “Dance for a Beautiful Cebu,” a social event that would involve their donors and would-be donors, said Minor.
“The activities that we are having has nothing to do with politics. It’s not about the leaders but who will benefit from these projects,” said Yeung.
She also asked reporters during the press conference to “refrain from talking about politics.”
Mayor Michael Rama said he is grateful for the Beautiful Cebu Foundation’s help in addressing Osmeña Boulevard problems.
“Do not look at me to solve all the problems (of the city). Look at yourselves and what you can do,” he said.
Yeung said the provincial government and nine Capitol contractors are now helping to complete the revitalization plans in a portion of Osmeña Boulevard from Escario Street to Fuente Osmeña.
The cost of ongoing work already consist of 40 percent of their P55-million budget estimate.
Yeung said owners of commercial establishments located from Fuente Osmeña circle to Sanciangko Street also pledged to spend for the revitalization works in their respective areas.
Work on their respective areas would start next month.
Yeung said with most of their expenses already covered, the foundation only needed to raise funds for areas without any sponsors.
As of yesterday, the Beautiful Cebu Foundation raised a total of P3.1 million and another $3,030.
They also have pledges from SM Prime Holdings chairman Henry Sy Jr. and PLDT chairman Manuel Pangilinan.
Yeung said their cash donations are kept in the Beautiful Cebu bank account.
Upon completion of the revitalization project, Rama said the Parks and Playgrounds Commission, the Department of Public Services (DPS) and the City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) would be tasked with the Osmeña Boulevard’s maintenance.
He said the beautification works would not necessarily lead to vendors displacement.
“We will always approach the issue with a balancing of interests,” he said.
Rama said he would also pursue under his administration the rehabilitation of the Carbon Market Center to bring vendors away from the streets and into a more conducive vending site.
The mayor said he is also in talks with Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia on the possibility of building a structure in a Capitol lot that would solely be assigned to sidewalk vendors.

International group declares MCIA as "Class A" airport (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=711499&publicationSubCategoryId=107)
By Niña G. Sumacot/JPM (The Freeman) Updated July 30, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)
The MCIAA is recognized by the organizations as the leading airport nationwide in terms of air safety compared to other known airports such as the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Luzon and the Davao International Airport in Mindanao.“Tinitingnan natin ang buong airport compliance. Ang Mactan airport, nag-comply sila, kumpleto kaya na-issuehan sila ng certificate,” he further said.
Villarete was thankful for the recognition as it will boost the image of the airport and several airline companies traveling for Central Visayas would now most likely use the MCIA. — (FREEMAN)

South Korea: time to chill out
July 29, 2011 6:00 am by Christian Oliver
Lee Myung-bak, South Korea’s president, has called on his people to boost the domestic economy by taking their holidays at home rather than jetting off to traditional favourites like Cebu, Guam and Hawaii. His tourism chief has gone a step further and wants workaholic Koreans to take a full (and hitherto unthinkable) two weeks off.

wakeuptoreality July 31st, 2011, 02:28 AM BRT scheme has support of LTFRB 7 (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/local-news/2011/07/31/brt-scheme-has-support-ltfrb-7-170021)
THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 7 has endorsed to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) in Manila the request of Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) general manager Nigel Paul Villarete to open a mass transport line that will connect the airport to the urban centers of Metro Cebu.
That way, the agency can conduct a study on the level of public need and determine how many buses will be needed for franchise, said LTFRB 7 Director Ahmed Cuizon.
With Mactan airport servicing about 5.4 million domestic and international passengers annually, he said there’s a need for mass transport from the airport to Talisay City, passing Lapu-Lapu City, Mandaue City and Cebu City along the way.
As the main gateway for international travel in the Visayas and Mindanao, he said Mactan airport’s accessibility has been challenged by the ever-growing congestion levels.
“The level of congestion in the corridors (of the airport) connecting the four cities has been consistently increasing in recent years,” Villarete said in his letter to Cuizon, which the LTFRB 7 received last July 21.
Villarete said building more roads is not enough. It’s a reactionary measure, which always generates more traffic and, hence, more congestion, he said.
Cost-effective
“Urban mass transportation is the key, preferably the more cost-effective, cost-efficient, and economical mode. The undersigned has previously advocated for the establishment of a Bus Rapid System (BRT) not only in Cebu City but in other cities as well, including the corridor leading to the airport,” Villarete said.
He said the previous technical studies for a possible rail solution for Metro Cebu’s traffic underscored unacceptable economic and financial feasibility indicators, and didn’t include the city-to-airport link due to technical difficulties in the two bridges’ grade and the high cost of building a new one to carry trains.
“Thus, the road-based mass transport is the preferred mode,” he said.
Villarete was referring to the Light Rail Transit, which has the support of Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district) and Deputy House Speaker Pablo Garcia (Cebu, 2nd district), but is opposed by Rep. Tomas Osmeña (Cebu City, south district).

THE business process outsourcing sector may be one of the fastest growing in the country, players admit there are just not enough qualified personnel that would allow them to expand even faster.
Butch Sison of Convergys said they remain “hopeful and passionate” about the industry’s growth in Cebu but admitted that some two-thirds of clients wanting to acquire services from their Cebu branches had to be turned down because of the lack of talent.
Sison said that this could have meant 1,500 jobs. He said the sad part is, these required skills from level one agents.
“The inavailability of talent is critical,” he said, adding that the smaller BPO companies end up “keeping them afloat” by accepting new graduates and training them before they leave and get accepted to Convergys with better capabilities.
While Sison noted that most regions in the world can barely keep pace with the industry’s growth, he fears big companies will want to start looking around for other areas if Cebu doesn’t act quickly.
Pag-asa Mactan expects new P100-M doppler radar (http://cdn.ph/news_details.php?id=10614)
CEBU’S weather station in Mactan island has updated equipment to ensure more accurate and reliable forecasts.
A P100 million weather surveillance doppler radar monitors precipitation areas, rain volume and wind, and can directly send the information online, said engineer Alfredo Quiblat, senior weather observer of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa Mactan).
He said they are waiting for Manila personnel to install the radar, which is the only one in the Visayas. Four units were installed in Luzon.
A P200,000 Automatic Weather Station bought in June is alread installed outside the weather station.
The equipment records rain volume, temperature and wind pressure every hour. Data is sent to the weather station's central office in Manila.

I am hoping that the city government will replicate this on other major then to the minor thoroughfares of the city.
MatudNilaBaby July 31st, 2011, 11:35 PM kudos to veco. at least they are doing their part in getting rid of the those ugly spaghetti wires. basin main thoroughfares lang sa ug kanang mga bag-ong developments. also ila sab nga fast track nang drainage system aron dili na intawon mabahaan ang atong mga dalan.

Ang distribution lines sa SRP giladlad didto sa may beachhead dapit mao nga di kaayo eyesore. Let's wait and see kon unsay paagi sa power supply sa Citta for example. From there, we can picture out how the area would look like in the future. So far, di pa gubot tan-awon.

SRP is not fully electric post free, neither is CBP.
In SRP the seaside lot from the talisay bridge going to ABC building has electric posts. (Been a while since I checked could have been removed)
In CBP, check behind lexmark 3, along camotes road, there are electric posts, and behind lexmark 1 going to china bank.

I agree. In CBP, i notice overhead wires are only used during constructions. So the one behind lexmark could be waiting for the ChinaBank Tower construction.

IamCebuano August 1st, 2011, 10:19 PM PSE to open Cebu office
By MALOU M. MOZO
August 1, 2011, 4:32pm
Manila Bulletin
CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines – In a move to strengthen its visibility in the Visayas, the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) announced it will be opening a marketing office in Cebu this September, its first outside Metro Manila, to increase local participation in the country’s stock market.
“We hope to raise the awareness of companies outside Metro Manila to enlist themselves in the PSE and more so for the investing public to participate in the stock market,” said Kathleen Therese Buenaobra of the PSE Marketing Education Department.
“Cebu is an important market for the PSE and we want to get as much involvement from companies here. Cebu’s business community is home to some of the most successfully run businesses in the country,” Buenaobra told Cebu reporters during a recently concluded PSE Familiarization Tour.
PSE has 249 listed companies; top Cebuano companies listed in the country’s stock exchange are Aboitiz Power, Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Cebu Holdings Inc., Cebu Property Ventures Development Corp., and Waterfront Philippine Inc.
The PSE office here will be located at the Cebu Business Center in the Cebu Business Park. Unlike the PSE offices in Ortigas and Makati, the Cebu branch will only conduct profiling, investor campaign and education.
Even as the office here will not be a trading facility, Buenaobra said it will house brokers who will help educate potential investors on the benefits of trading in the country’s stock market. “The facility will be retail-investor-friendly,” she assured.
Buenaobra noted that the growth potential of the country’s trading market is still high, but sadly, only a few companies take advantage of the stock market as a main source to increase capitalization.
In previous PSE roadshows held in Cebu, the PSE urged companies here to examine properly the benefits they can get from entering into Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), rather than holding on to the impression that doing so requires a lot of requirements.
Buenaobra estimated only 600,000 investor accounts, which is only 0.05 percent of the country’s 90 million population.
To attract potential foreign investors, PSE also bared the extension of trading hours starting October. The move is meant to increase trading volumes and match the hours of other Southeast Asian exchanges it will be linked to next year.
On Oct. 1, trading will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. instead of the current schedule of 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon. On Jan. 1, 2012, trading will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon and then from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Philippines to send athletes to Shenzhen, China Universiade (http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Sports&title=Philippines-to-send-athletes-to-Shenzhen,-China-Universiade&id=31539)
THE PHILIPPINES is sending a lean but mean delegation to the 26th Summer Universiade to be held in Shenzhen, People’s Republic of China from August 12-23, 2011.
It marks the first time that the country will take part in the Universiade, an international university sporting event that is held every two years.
The Philippines will see action in eight sports disciplines, according to the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), the only local university sports organization that is officially recognized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the organizer of the Universiade and World University Games
The eight sports disciplines are: swimming, men’s basketball, table tennis, badminton, chess, archery, beach volleyball and athletics.
A Cebu all-star team composed of university players will represent the Philippines in the men’s basketball competition in the 26th Summer Universiade to be held in Shenzhen, China, in August.
The Sugbu squad will revolve around players from the University of Cebu, which topped the 2009 National Students Basketball Championship and the 2011 CESAFI tournament.
University of Cebu’s Roehl Gomez, who once played professional ball with Alaska in the Philippine Basketball Association, is the head coach of the Philippine team.
For the participation in the basketball competition, an athlete must have been born between Jan. 1, 1987 and Dec. 31, 1993
Serbia will defend its men’s basketball title in the Shenzhen Universiade. It played host to the 2009 Universiade and scored a 73-51 decision over Russia to claim the men’s basketball title.
The United States downed Israel, 91-80, to secure the bronze medal.
There are 24 countries competing in the men’s basketball competition of the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade.
Following the draw held last April 16, here is the composition of the four pools (or groups) in the men’s basketball competition:
Pool A -- China, Germany, Romania, Brazil, Czech Republic and United Arab Emirates;
Pool B -- Serbia, Turkey, Canada, Australia, Republic of South Africa and Hong Kong;
Pool C -- Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Japan, PHILIPPINES and New Zealand
Pool D -- United States, Israel, Finland, Korea, Hungary and Mexico.
More than 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials from a record-setting 188 countries are taking part in the Shenzhen Universiade, making this year the largest Universiade ever.
The first Summer Universiade was held in Turin, Italy, in August-September 1959.
A total of 1,407 athletes from 43 countries saw action in seven sports events that year.
Expectedly, host Italy collected the most number of gold medals with 18 and topped the overall medal list with 38 medals (18-10-10).
Long before Michael Jordan became a legendary player in the National Basketball Association, His Airness saw action with Team USA at the 1983 Universiade.
Jordan powered the Americans to a gold medal finish at the 1983 Universiade in Edmonton, Canada.
While a junior (his final year) at the University of North Carolina, Jordan gained a roster berth on the USA team that copped the gold medal during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. -- Marlon Bernardino

And as always, the crab mentality and superiority complex of the people from the northern part of this country can be seen in this forum: http://forums.interbasket.net/f32/uc-in-the-26th-universiade-16649/#post.

and just thought of sharing since im here in a different place..in terms of land area..Auckland city if ibutang sa cebu, it would encompass Talisay city, Cebu City, Mandaue City, whole island of Mactan, Danao, all the way up to Tuburan..although 3 cities nana kay nag merge man ang Auckland, North Shore and Manukau to have 1 super city which is Auckland..mura rasad gud ug metro Cebu..but usa ra ang Mayor for the 3 cities..which is good...kay usa ra ang resources, then if naa projects for a certain city, maapil pud sa kahig ang uban cities..plus uniformed..dili ma putol..like if ever ma implement ang BRT..d man ganhan ang talisay so ma putol..anyway..just thought of sharing it..hehehe..God bless everyone

bintaro August 3rd, 2011, 10:25 AM i was so amazed when i saw the part of mandaue that used to be an illegal settlers lair nga wala nay mga squatters. i dont know the name of that place but its near old mandaue-mactan bridge near baradirohan, i am very surprised because few years back that area there is so filthy full of slums and now its nowhere to be found...kudos to mayor cortez n alimpyo na gyud tawn nang dapita diha and mayor mike rama has to follow that achievement most especially sa mga squatter diha daplin sa dagat luyo sa SRP.
by the way the alcantara condominium project is another boost for the cebu province. alcantara is a very nice place, i went there once before.

Resilient and proud, the Philippines takes off
an excerpt
In the business and tourism province of Cebu, income grew a staggering 10 percent in 2010. With nine economic zones that offer help with company registration and other red tape, good incentives, plus culture of professionalism, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia noted in her State of the Province Address in July that Cebu "remains strong and gets stronger with each passing year."
Thanks to solid bonds between elected officials, business groups, the public and private sectors and the people of the province themsevles, Cebu continues to draw investors. The province has many universities and other educational institutions that serve as a magnet to students from other provinces, a major factor of a highly skilled and efficient workforce in Cebu.
The province will showcase Cebu to the world, when it hosts the 12th East Asia Tourism Forum in September of this year. Delegations from 12 countries, including China and Russia, will come to experience the dynamism, beauty and unique charm that sets Cebu apart.

ERUF now one of Asia's best (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=713202&publicationSubCategoryId=107)

Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation officials, (L-R) Atty. Terrence Fernandez, Dr. Jesus Ravanes, Dr. Pek Eng Lim, chairman, Mona Li, Charlie Taguiam, Herminio Cortes and Dr. Kenneth Chan, answer questions from the media for their upcoming 25th year anniversary celebration. PAUL JUN E. ROSAROSO
| Zoom
CEBU, Philippines - After years of struggle and toil, the Cebu based Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) now stand as one of the best emergency units in Southeast Asia.
As they celebrate their 25th anniversary on September 13, the group looked back at how they started with only few old junked vehicles at their disposal during emergencies.
Dr. Jesus Ravanes, over all chairperson of the ERUF silver jubilee celebration, told The FREEMAN how proud their team is to have become one of best emergency teams in Asia.
Ravanes said they have exceeded other emergency units in Metro Manila, Makati and Davao City with their relentless efforts in the past years.
They are the only accredited and recognized medical team by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) based in the United States of America together with another emergency medical service (EMS) team in Hong Kong.
NAEMT is a professional association representing all EMS practitioners, including paramedics, emergency medical technicians, first responders and other professionals working in pre-hospital emergency medicine throughout the globe.
In their aim to “serve so others may live,” ERUF has worked the path of sacrifice and true service as they are now recognized by various agencies in America and the European Union.
Though with only minimal supports from local government units where they serve, volunteers have exceeded what the forefathers of ERUF have dreamed in the past – to be world class.
Since 1986, ERUF has grown in terms of manpower, accomplishments both locally and abroad. The group which started with only 24 men has grown to an army of 300 well-trained and selfless personnel.
ERUF has also extended their world class knowledge by training barangay volunteers in Paramedic Training operations like the very active Pardo Emergency Rescue Unit.
With over 31 vehicles used in various purposes from emergency response and rescue, ERUF is one of the most equipped EMS team in the country. Although they said they are just 75-percent equipped, but no other teams have come close to what they now have.
ERUF RUN
In celebration of their 25th year of existence, the ERUF will host an “ERUF 161 RUN” on September 11, 2011 to raise funds to purchase new portable defibrillators to be used in their day-to-day operations.
A portable defibrillator, which costs P500, 000, is a machine used to shock victim’s heart into action after cardiac arrest.
With such machine on each of their 13 ambulances means more lives could be saved. ERUF is asking the public to support their endeavor for the benefit of every Cebuano under their care.
The run will have 12K, 6K, and 3K which will start and end at Mandaue City Reclamation Area, across Park Mall. The course is fat and fast and will be ideal for all ages. The run will start at 5:30 a.m until 8:30 a.m.
Prize will also be awarded to the top ten over all male and female runners in each category while special awards will also be given to the best in costume, the oldest and youngest runners.
Interested participants can register for only P250 at their headquarters in Banilad Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu City Hall, and the Cebu City Sports Center. — (FREEMAN)
