Happy Birthday Rusty18!!!

These cruise ship news is really very good news, I hope Cebu's Dept of Tourism would capitalize on this. Maybe they should invite a lot of the international cruise liners to make Cebu a regular Port's o Call. This way they'll discover the beauty of Cebu and hence come back to spend a few days.

^^WoW, huge luxury liners in Cebu :applause:
two things that I like most- highrise buildings and ships... ;)

that MV Statendam (floating building) nears a highrise status coz of it's 10 to 12 floors.:D

based on what I've heard sa interview sa usa ka tripolante nga taga Cebu, they will include Cebu regularly sa ilang package, so it means we can see that huge cruise ship often here in Cebu.

i read somewhere (i'm not sure if i remember it right) that Tokyo required all high-rise residential bldgs to have a green/garden, trees(?) on roof-tops. i hope Cebu will come up with the same initiative. while there are still greens, the gov't should anticipate the growing high-rise lifestyle trend in the metro.

Developer bares plans to develop commercial center south of city

MORE than 40 percent of Cebu City’s population, who live in the south, represent a huge market with plenty of potentials for commercial entities, a developer said.

“It seems the southern part of Cebu City is taken for granted because all the commercial developments, such as malls and department stores, are mostly located in the north, particularly the Banilad area,” Danny Arcenas, president of Arcenas Estate, said in a press interview.

The southern part of Cebu City, which he described as “anywhere south of Jones Avenue (Osmeña Blvd.),” has a total population of 333,597 with over 90 residential communities, 27 educational facilities and 19 religious institutions.

“We’re the only development in the city large enough for mixed use,” he said. “Since 2000, I’ve already foreseen the many developments that will take place here because I saw the huge potential of this area.”

Upscale

The 20-hectare Arcenas Estate in Banawa, Cebu City houses the upscale P500-million residential Paseo San Ramon, the P700-million Casa Rosita and an information technology (IT) building occupied by Convergys that also has a commercial center, he said.

Arcenas Estate had invested an initial P200 million in developing the commercial center, where Rustan’s Supermarket will open next month, he said.

Rustan’s has a minimum five-year contract with the Arcenas Estate, he said.

Need

“It (answers) the need of people who occupy Arcenas Estate and also residents in Cebu City south. This is going to be a convenient place for them to buy their groceries,” he said.

By September this year, he said a 30-unit commercial building, to be called Paseo Center, would also open.

“I’m not going to compete with the malls. But Paseo Center will offer basic stores like grocery, fastfood, pharmacy, bakeshop and coffee shops, among others,” he said.

The 5,000-square-meter Paseo Center is the first phase of Arcenas Estate three-hectare commercial development. The second phase will offer a “bigger” commercial center that will contain retail stores, which will open in the “near future,” he said.

He said Playhouse Children’s Home had expressed interest in relocating to the Arcenas property due to traffic problems in Banilad.

Convergys will be the Arcenas Estate IT building’s lone occupant, though.

“We are not actively looking for IT locators because Convergys has an option to expand. They began their operation here in 2004 and just fully hired 1,200 employees,” he said. (ALC)

Leading Cebu into the future, the Estate will also be home to the commerce of information and high technology. Nearly 3 hectares of prime real estate has been reserved for an Information Technology Park and a Call Centre Complex. The Call Centre Complex is Handuman Developer’s response to the growing demand for call centres in the Philippines. It also demonstrates Handuman Development’s commitment to cutting edge developments.

Arcenas Group invests P200M for Banawa commercial center
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 03/21/2006

The Arcenas Group of Companies is spending about P200 million more to develop a chic commercial center within the 20-hectare Arcenas Estate in Banawa, southern part of Cebu City.

The Arcenas Group has already established two upscale residential subdivisions within the area, the Paseo San Ramon, and Casa Rosita, which costs the company an initial investment of P1.2 billion.

"It seems that the southern part of Cebu is taken for granted. Today, all developments, for commercial facilities are all going northward," said Arcenas Group president Danny Arcenas in a press conference.

About 30 available spaces for commercial use will be made available in the next few months, while Rustan's Supermarket is set to open on September this year.

The 5,000 square-meter Paseo Center Cebu is the initial phase of the three-hectare commercial development of the Arcenas Estate. It is the first large commercial development to be introduced in the southern part of Cebu City that provides one-stop-shop facilities for dining, entertainment, banking and ATM, health and fitness, beauty and fashion, travel and tours, electronics and communications, hardware and appliances, among others.

The first phase of the commercial development will involve the creation of the neighborhood commercial center, where it will house well-known and branded coffee shops, pastry shops, fast food, pharmacy, bakeshop, among others.

The second phase will already include a development of a mini-mall that will have an anchor department store, RTW shops.

Construction of the Paseo Center Cebu will be completed this coming July. Hopefully by September of this year, tenants will be able to commercially open.

According to Arcenas, the company has entered a 5-year contract deal with Rustan's on September of this year, Rustan's Supermarket will be opened to serve the southern part of Cebu clientele.
Currently, only Rustan's Meat Shop is open at the area, after Rustan's Supermarket-arm closed its Mango Avenue outlet few months back.

The Arcenas Estate has also attracted a call center locator. Convergy's-Cebu, America's one of the largest call center operators is now locating at the Estate.

Arcenas said his company has built the Arcenas Estate I.T. Building, to accommodate the growing number of Convergy's operation. Now, Convergy's has 1,200 employees. It is expected to grow in number in the next few months.

Aside from the retail, food and beverage outlets that are expected to locate at the estate, Arcenas said the company is also currently negotiating with an educational company, PlayHouse, to possibly open a branch at the area.

"We are the first upscale, mixed-used real property development in Cebu City South. We started to redefine 'southern comfort' with our first venture, Paseo San Ramon. Paseo San Ramon's reputation as a premier residential development has been proven time and again. Its reputation is our benchmark," Arcenas said.

The Arcenas Group of Companies is also into banking, furniture exports, Information Technology operations, aside from property development business.

welcome dude. i will try to answer some of your questions:

1. Yes i believe Phil Dream is still open.
2. The Boardwalk Mall is still on hold. but with the ongoing developments of north reclamation, there is a very big possibility that this will push through.
3. Robinsons is looking into expansion in SRP.
4. The Gaisano Mall of Cebu is planned to be revived but no timetable yet.
5. Im not sure about Traders, but a Metrobank officer told my officemate that "they will open 2 hotels in cebu business park" and one of these hotels is Traders.

Yes, it is certainly true that most of the popular destinations in the Philippines (Cebu, Palawan, Boracay) are marketed as separate entities or sumthin' like that. as our local tourism agencies always say, it is easier to sell Cebu than the Philippines.

To tell you frankly mga bai (rusty18 and slerz), im promoting our island here in PNG, most people here travel only to countries like Australia, Fiji, New Zealnd and Solomon Islands which is very near to PNG. But they always hear good news from Cebu from sources like travel magazine, newspaper and etc. Most travel magazine only mention Cebu and not the Philippines. Places like Boracay, Palawan, Bohol are also popular here in PNG. But nothing compare to our beloved Cebu bai. However a very few PNG national have gone to these places, i knew a lot of them have gone to Cebu because whenever i met a new friend, i always ask them what place in the Philippines they have gone already. Well living and working in PNG is good bai, you can save money kay wala kay mapalit diri, walay malls walay sinihan pero dako kaayo ang pagtahud nila kanato bai, yes bai duna nay jeepneys diri. Renovation of the City Legislative Building starts this April
www.CebuCity.gov.ph (http://www.cebucity.gov.ph/Index.php)

The Cebu City government is on its final stages for the renovation the Cebu City Legislative Building which will begin this April.

The renovation project is a priority project initiated by the City Council headed by the Office of the Vice-Mayor. It will be undertaken in two Phases.

Phase 1 includes the supply of labor and materials; earthworks/siteworks and demolition; concrete works; steel reinforcement; steel decking; structural steel; roof and roof framing system; masonry works, doors and windows; plumbing works, electrical works; structural cabling; fire protection; and mechanical works.

Phase 1 has an estimated cost of P66,604,204.26 based on the Project of Works and Estimated as conducted by the City Engineering’s Office and the University of San Carlos Institute of Planning and Design (USC-IPD).

The first phase is expected to be completed within 120 days or four months.

Phase 2 includes the installation of air conditioning system, furniture and furnishings (architectural finishings, electrical and water proofing), and the landscaping of the surroundings of the renovated building.

The renovation of the Legislative Building shall be completed in time for the 12th ASEAN Summit this December. The City of Cebu will play host to this prestigious international gathering of state leaders in the Asian region.

The renovated building will house the offices of the members of the City Council, Office of the Vice-Mayor, City Secretary, Commission on Audit, City Planning Office, and the Office of the City Attorney.

It will also feature a Child- Rearing Center, Canteen, Library and Legislative Center, Social Hall, Session Hall with a Pre-Caucus Room and a Councilors’ Lounge, and a Main stair with skylight.

The USC-IPD headed by Architects Ellis Puerto and Tony Valenzona prepared the plans and design of the new Legislative Building.

According to Rama, the renovation will restore the elegance and heritage value of the city seat of government. The City Hall will be made presentable to whoever visiting state leader.

FBMA cuts a Slice in shipbuilding history
By Ruth G. Mercado and Roel Catoto
The Freeman 03/22/2006

Taking one year to finish and $9 million in costs, the Balamban shipyards built the world's first commercially produced Slice vessel, cutting a niche in the world's shipbuilding industry. The world's first yes - yet it is the 15th and 16th among ships FBMA Marine built in nine years of operation.

So-called Slice, the "Lider" and "Tenaz" were built with technology using torpedo-like hulls that slice the seas especially in tough weather thus reducing onboard motion. FBMA Marine chief finance officer Iker Aboitiz and president Doug Border described Slice technology with a five-letter word, SWATH or small waterplane twin hull. The Lockheed Martin innovative design features abilities of a ship to endure extreme weather conditions with four torpedo-like hulls and onboard-computerized stabilizing system. Stabilizers reduce onboard motion, while minimizing motion-induced sickness.

Lockheed Martin commissioned FBMA to build the Slice vessels at the Balamban shipyard with project costs at close to $9 million or P460 million. Aboitiz said that while it was Lockheed Martin that commissioned building the ship, Mexico's national oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos is its actual owner and operator. "Pemex is a client of Lockheed Martin," he said of the deal.

The 28.5-meter long vessel is essentially an offshore support that is used to transport workers and limited cargo from Ciudad del Carmen to the Gulf of Mexico's Campeche Basin Oil Field, approximately 90 miles offshore. To operate at a service speed of 22 knots in full load condition, the technology offers a cost-effective alternative to the very expensive and sometimes risky helicopter.

The world's largest defense contractor and specialist in aeronautics and astronautics, Lockheed Martin first used the innovative Slice design in a vessel it developed, built and tested for the United States Office of Naval Research sometime in 1998. The Balamban-built ship that Lockheed Martin christened "Lider" is the first of two Slice Crew Transport Vessels that were ordered in November 2004. Lider also known for its code name 1021 was launched this month while its sister ship christened "Tenaz" or 1022 is slated for launching next month. Major leap
Aboitiz announced that FBMA signed a $20 million deal with Lockheed Martin to build the world's first slice boat in January last year. The deal was done at US$18.7 million but foreign exchange fluctuations and spreads were estimated to raise costs to some US$20 million. "This is a major leap for the company and the shipbuilding industry of the country," he said during an interview last year.

With a reputation of being the world's best advanced technology systems integrator in aeronautics, space and electronic systems, Lockheed Martin reportedly chose FBMA in the commissioning because of its long history of building and delivering aluminum or steel hi-speed ferries, medium-speed ferries, patrol vessels and specialist work boats.

FBMA is a fully independent shipyard that has been operating since 1997. Its first built vessel is a 50-knot multi-hulled catamaran, the Tricat. It has since established strategic links with international designers and a clientele base in Europe, Australia, Asia and the US.

Slerz nindot man diay ang view sa lapulapu city no? Ang kadtong Korean Hotel nga itukod sa Mactan gisugdan na ba? It would be a very good addition to Lapulapu city skyline, imagine 7 towers. How about that Korean Condo, at the CBP is it underconstruction na ba? Is it true that SM will build a mall somewhere in Banilad? But im very excited with Cebu Boardwalk Mall, I called my father last night and i asked him about this mall, nagsugod na man daw ang construction, ambot kun tinuod ba. He himself is also very interested with the new development in Cebu. And lasty im still waiting for Markiiboi's picture of the Delta Philippines Dream Floating Hotel, im happy that it is still open. CEBU'S TOURISM IS BOOMING. ONE THING MORE, IS MAYOR THOMAS OSMENA AGAINST THE CONSTRUCTION OF MALLS IN THE SRP? PLEASE CLARIFY THIS TO ME. SRP IS TOO BIG AND PUTTING A MALL IN SRP ( EVEN 2 MALLS ) WOULD MAKE THE PLACE ATTRACTIVE TO OTHER INVESTORS OR BUSINESSES SUCH AS HOTEL, CONDO AND THE LIKES. BTW ANY LOCATORS IN THE SRP ALREADY?

SAYANG , DELTA PHILIPPINES DREAM HAS BEEN CLOSED ALREADY. BAI, SINCE MOST OF THE DEFUNCT HOTEL /RESORT ARE GOING TO OPEN AGAIN (FORMER CEBU PLAZA HOTEL NOW MARCO POLO HOTEL, CORAL REEF HOTEL) IS THERE A NEWS THAT THE DELTA PHILIPPINE DREAM HOTEL WILL OPEN AGAIN?

Yup the Mayor is very much opposed to having a mall as big as SM in the SRP since this would suck dry all the businesses in downtown. I think it's a good move. Anyway, there are many "locators" already in SRP. It's just that government bureacracy (especially the COA) is prolonging the agony of these investors. Take note too that SRP is already a special economic zone and its official name is South Road Properties Special Economic Zone... Am I right slerz?

One of the investors is Bigfoot. The International Academy for Film and Television (IAFT) of Bigfoot wants to expand at the SRP with the construction of additional studios and sounstages. Gleissner himself also wants a yacht club to be put up.

Another investor is a Singaporean company that specializes in the manufacture of container vans. Take note that SRP is divided into different zones: industrial, commercial, recreation, etc.. And also, there's a Japanese company that wants to build a retirement facility.

There's also a highrise being proposed at the SRP. Sugbuanon has the rendering of this project which was designed by Architect Noel.

Markiiboi too already posted that SRP Masterplan. Care to post it again Markiiboi?

hehe oks lang. sorry, take your time. like when traveling from the Mandaue side crossing the second bridge. dba merong road/lane going to your left (going to the airport / MEPZ). merong landscape and the Marcelo Fernan monument under that right? cant remember really, its been a while. nwayz, no need to rush. i also would like to know the developments under the bridge, there's a park or recreation area on both sides dba? ala lng.

That's a service ramp rusty.

I already posted a pic of it in the first thread of the Cebu Infrastructure thread-Highways, Bridges, etc.. Sugbuanon also posted a pic of the park under the bridge. Ato nya ipa repost niya.. :)

CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG, EVEN THOU MAYOR OSMENA IS OPPOSED OF PUTTING MALL IN THE SRP , HE ALSO CLARIFY THAT WA SIYAY MAHIMU KUN MOBUTANG GAYUD ANG MGA LOCATORS UG MGA MALL SA SRP, CEBU CITY NEEDS MONEY TO PAY THE 6 BILLION LOAN. ( I JUST GET THIS OPINION FROM A FRIEND HERE WHO IS ALSO A CEBUANO). I THINK IT IS BETTER TO HAVE AT LEAST 2 MALLS IN THE SRP, NOT AS BIG AS SM . MALL WILL CREATE JOB ALSO. AND BESIDES DILI MAN SIGURO MAAPIKTUHAN ANG MGA EXISTING MALL .

WE DONT HAVE TO TURN DOWN INVESTORS , INSTEAD OF PUTTING A MALL IN CEBU HE WILL RELOCATE IT IN ANOTHER CITY, SAY ILOILO, BACOLOD, DAVAO OR CDO WHERE THEY ARE MOST WELCOME. MALUPIGAN NA HINOON TA NIANI BAI. BASIN MAGMATA LANG TA UG BUNTAG AND IN A FEW YEARS TIME MALUPIGAN NA GAYUD TA.

^^

But take note bai that SM City Cebu is currently undergoing expansion. They're currently building an annex building that's as big as the existing one. I remembered before SM had a plan to put up a SM Southmall at the SRP pero Tommy was against it. So maybe the reason why they just expanded their existing mall.

Ayala Center Cebu too is expanding. Mr. Almendras of CHI said that instead of putting up another Ayala Mall in Metro Cebu or in any other place, they at Ayala will just focus daw in "revitalizing" the existing malls in the Philippines.. Dunno what he meant by this..

Anyhow, as for me, having more IT Parks, special economic zones, etc..etc.. is better.. Hehehehe.. Unsay opinion nimo slerz?

ako? hehee...

yes, Mayor Tom don't want another SM to be built in SRP or huge malls coz of it's proximity to downtown business district. I'm with him coz we can't deny that business climate in downtown/old Cebu is still very lively and we can't also deny that if downtown business will slow down it will also affect the economy of Cebu as majority of SME's are located there specially Chinese businessmen. And if others think that downtown only caters class B and C or D(?), it also caters class A specially in Carbon and Taboan area where you can find rich people buying fresh fruits and vegetables. The mayor is only protecting the oldest business district in the Philippines but IF SM is really intrested to put up another mall in SRP, he said "nothing I can do, they are also investors that Cebu needs"...

Para sad nako, highrise buildings are better than malls kay sa skyline picture, wa jud ko kita sa SM og Ayala nga mga dagko man kaha na silang mga bildinga :D

IT parks, special economic zones are better :okay:

murag pariha ra tag gi sulti bai...hehe

WE DONT HAVE TO TURN DOWN INVESTORS , INSTEAD OF PUTTING A MALL IN CEBU HE WILL RELOCATE IT IN ANOTHER CITY, SAY ILOILO, BACOLOD, DAVAO OR CDO WHERE THEY ARE MOST WELCOME. MALUPIGAN NA HINOON TA NIANI BAI. BASIN MAGMATA LANG TA UG BUNTAG AND IN A FEW YEARS TIME MALUPIGAN NA GAYUD TA.

but he didn't stop those investors bai, nisulti lang siya sa iyang opinion og sa pwedeng mahitabo or the chain reaction.
pero it's ok with me nga maapsan ta basta Cebu's economy is constantly growing as well as other cities in the Philippines.

i think mayor osmena, in the long term, won't block mall development efforts if there will be any. there will always be a need for a commercial center whether you are in the middle of the sea or on top of the mountain, as long as there are people and money. cities evolve too, centers of the past may become outskirts in the future and vice versa.

srp is like an island in itself and an absence of a commercial area won't make it very attractive.

I just wanna quote a news clip from the Phil Information Agency..

Security measures for the Marcelo Fernana bridge were also discussed, specifically the installation of security cameras. Two companies signified interest in pursuing the project. One is a wired company and the other offers a wireless security system. Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia who is also the board's chair, said the proposals from the two companies are being studied as to the price it would incur because they do not want to use up their fund for this alone.

A company also offered its services for an energy device that would generate 40 to 50 percent savings on electric bills by replacing the lamp post bulbs with LED lights which have a sensor. This sensor will turn-off 40 to 50 percent of the lights if nobody passes the bridge and will turn on only when it detects incoming vehicles.

The board challenged the company and is willing to give the board a month-long free trial to prove its claim on electric bills saving.

CICC 10 days ahead of sked: architect

Work on the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) is 10 days ahead of schedule and is expected to remain on time with the help of modern technology, according to architect Manuel Guanzon.

Guanzon says he is confident the building will be finished in time for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in December.

The construction of the CICC in Mandaue City is being undertaken by WT Construction, a Cebu based company.

He said the schedule prepared for the construction was for pile cutting to be done on March 31 yet but they were able to do this last Tuesday.

“There’s no way that we cannot finish this because we don’t have any choice... Imelda (Marcos) was able to build the Folk Arts Theater within 77 days when equipment before were not as modern as today,” Guanzon told reporters.

Equipment

He explained that before, construction workers could drive only one pile a day, but with today’s equipment like the hydraulic hammer being used in the CICC construction, they drive 50 piles a day.

Guanzon also said they are using modern materials like structural steel. Unlike concrete, which make builders wait 28 days for it to harden, structural steel does not need curing time.

As of now, construction personnel are working 12 hours a day.

The first to try the modern facilities of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) when it is completed in October may be the Cebu Provincial Board and the Mandaue City Council.

Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez Jr. yesterday suggested to Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia that they can hold a joint session there as dry run.

Sanchez made the suggestion in yesterday’s meeting with Guanzon and Capitol consultant Apollo Enriquez. Capitol officials and Guanzon signed the contract for the construction of the CICC yesterday.

Among the features of the CICC is the glass at the middle of the roof with a beam holding it, which looks like an inverted C.

Guanzon said this will give the CICC an element distinct from other structures.

Underneath the glass roof is a big lobby that would look like it is “floating” because of a water effect that will surround it.

The two-story CICC is being built especially for the Asean summit.

It will have 17 flag poles for all the participating nations, a helipad at the rooftop, a plenary room at the second floor, as well as a press conference room, listening room, a room for signing ceremonies and rooms for the secretariat of the 17 participating nations.

It also has an exhibition hall, an international media center, business center, lobby, coffee room, prayer rooms, lunch rooms, morning and powder room, and medical and security room.

The lower ground floor holds the parking space, storage room, mechanical and electrical room, and carpentry and maintenance room.

The international media center occupies almost half of the upper ground floor, but Guanzon said it has portable divisions that may be installed if used for other purposes. (MBG)

Summit opens next week, to focus on establishing Cebu as ICT hub
Thursday, March 23, 2006

The second Cebu ICT Strategy Summit will bring all information and communications technology (ICT) stakeholders in Cebu “to make certain that all the essential ingredients in transforming Cebu into an ICT hub” are in place, summit officials said.

“It is designed to be a focused effort by the ICT stakeholders of Cebu from all sectors, the academe, industry, government, and civil society, to map out the blueprint of each and every sector in a coordinated and concerted manner,” said Bonifacio Belen, summit executive director.

Kickoff

The summit, with the theme: “Defining the tasks ahead for a united Cebu,” is a three-month event that will kick off Wednesday next week. It also includes a tour of Silicon Valley in San Jose, California in April.

Summit sessions in May will focus on the four pillars of the Silicon Valley model, which will establish Cebu as an ICT hub.

These pillars are: provision of quality professionals and practitioners, availability of legal and financial framework, creation of an innovation ecosystem and promotion of a culture for technology entrepreneurship, Belen said.

“We should promote a culture of creativity and technology entrepreneurship. We want our ICT people not just to look for jobs but to be on their own and create jobs,” he said.

Blueprint

At the end of the summit, the Cebu Silicon Island Roadmap and the blueprint of Cebu ICT for the next five years will be presented, he said.

Some 100 participants are expected to come, he told Sun.Star Cebu.

“In the past and even after the first ICT Summit, there were so many initiatives in the ICT scene. We thought we need to have a concerted effort and march towards the same direction,” said Clarito Fruelda, chairman of the summit’s steering committee.

Cebusoft executive director and summit workshop manager Virgilio Paralisan noted that individual ICT stakeholders are moving in the right direction.

“But they waste so much energy doing the same things and overlapping. The thrust now is to integrate and move forward together,” he said.

He also revealed that organizers have chosen participants for this year’s summit.

“You get invited because you have something to contribute in innovation, social action and manpower development, among others,” he said. (ALC)

First phase already started and is nearing completion Jimbu. This involved the construction of a new jeepney terminal since the existing jeepney terminal is where the actuall expansion building will commence.

LordCarnal

^^

Yup, yup. It was supposed to become a SM Sheraton Hotel but became a victim of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis alongside with other highrise projects which, during that time, were also stalled. Tourism in Cebu during that time was also bleak though it experienced a resurge after the successful ATF in 1998.

There were talks of pursuing the hotel but no longer under Sheraton Management. It would actually cost millions to refurbish the hotel -- carpets, electricals, furnitures, etc. As of now, only the landscaping surrounding it is being maintained every day.

Last month, Marissa Fernan, an executive in SM, disclosed that the hotel project would really be pursued and that Henry Sy would prioritize it after SM MoA has opened. Some people from other sectors were even pushing for its opening especially with the province's hosting of the ASEAN Summit this December. But then again, it would no longer be under Sheraton .:)

^^ Ok. Anyway, does anyone know what happened to that abandoned u/c hotel near SM?

Durano said that the SM group would attend to the planned operation of its hotel beside SM City Cebu after the Mall of Asia is completed.

He said the SM group is targeting the end of first quarter to open its huge shopping complex in Manila.

After that is completed, they can move on to this property (Sheraton).

Impressive skyline indeed. :) Since some part of Cebu is hilly, it'll surely justify its claim to be the Hollywood in SEA if not in the whole of Asia. The majestic mountain on the background surely resembles that of LA.

Mactan luxury resort sets expansion

Cordova Coral Reef Resort Hotel, a luxury tropical resort at the southern tip of Mactan owned by the Filipino group Benthel Resort Hotel Corp., is expanding its tourist facility to cater to the influx of select tourists.

Jocylen Catedral, executive assistant for operations, said they are going to expand its existing 50 luxury villas. No amount, however, was disclosed but the existing African-inspired villas built ten years ago were built at half a million pesos each.

At present, only eight hectares of the 20-hectare property in Bantayan, Cordova in Mactan is utilized. The resort, which is manned by 45 personnel, has an operating cost of P2 million monthly.

"The expansion would be towards the breakwater," Catedral said.

Facilities inside the resort is a sprawling swimming pool, spa, boutique, gym, tennis court, billiard room, aviary, orchid garden, wine room and cellar, function rooms for 100 persons, among others.

Since it started operation, the facility, which is managed by Grasshopper Management has maintained a high profile strategy catering only to select tourists from Europe, US, Koreans and Japanese. At least 90 percent of its guests are Japanese and mostly are honeymooners.

"We can afford to choose our clients. We have 60 percent occupancy rate," Catedral said. (BCM)

Tallers, havent i already warned you before? Could you get off Cebu's case? You seem to have some serious problems with Cebu...i dunno, maybe you are just jealous of their development. As Filipinos, we should all be proud of Cebu. It is a growth area which is employing thousands of Filipinos, not just Cebuanos, but Filipinos. The skyline shown in those pics are authentic, I've seen it myself when i pass through the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. We should be happy that Cebu as a growing skyline, since we are all "urban enthuasiasts". Cebu wont stop growing, more skyscrapers will be built...just face it.

Today's BIG Headline:

Tomas gets 4-day holiday in December

Three cities will get a four-day holiday in December this year, while Cebu hosts the ministers’ summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

Proclamation 1032 declares Dec. 11, 12, 13 and 14 as special non-working days in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu. Dated March 10, the proclamation is signed by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita and Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Joaquin Lagonera.

“It is but fitting and proper that the people of these cities be given full opportunity to participate in this important event,” the proclamation said.

Sun.Star Cebu received a fax copy of the proclamation from the office of Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano, who was among the first to be informed by Malacañang’s records office.

Concern for the security of foreign delegates has prodded Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña to push for non-working holidays during the four-day summit, which starts on a Monday.

His view is that an extended break would encourage people to go out-of-town and allow Metro Cebu’s authorities to focus on securing the summit’s delegates and venue.

Certain leaders of the business community, however, have warned the holiday would be counter-productive.

“To them it’s a business issue. To me this is an issue of safety. Can they not sacrifice for four days?” Osmeña has said in response to a request of a group of business owners in the cities of Cebu and Mandaue.

Mayor Ouano, however, agreed with the business group’s request, saying the summit would give local business a chance to show delegates the economic potentials of Cebu.

“Business should remain open during the entire summit so foreign leaders and the investors who will accompany them will be impressed by Cebu’s economic growth,” he said.

An organizing committee headed by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Francisco Benedicto has been created to prepare the summit venue.

The Provincial Government is attempting to build the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue in time for the summit, while preparations are underway to accommodate the dignitaries in Cebu’s top hotels and resorts. (AIV)

Tallers, I'm not from Cebu but I have been there a couple of times, 3 years ago and last year being the most recent. If you can check my current location through my IP address you are more than welcome to, it can prove to you where exactly I am residing. The pictures of highrise buildings that were posted in this thread from the 1st chapter up to this recent one is pretty accurate. It's not as high as those ones in Manila but I see Cebu as a steadily rising metropolis. Cebu is a wonderful city even up to now I'm still mesmerized by the beauty of it, they have one of the most wonderful beach resort in that country. Too bad, I can't speak their dialect but through my partner in life she can translate to me the tagalog and cebuano language. Maybe the reason why you don't see the highrise buildings from that bridge is that your eyes are caught by the beauty of the nature, the ocean and the surrrounding as you drive through the two spans that connect mactan to cebu proper.

Cheers to cebuanos, you have all the reason to be proud of your hometown.

nothing is permanent in this world but change...and indeed, cebu's skyline is drastically changing... and with all of the constructions going on around this metropolis, i bet, the next time you'll visit cebu you may exclaimed " maling flight yata nasakyan ko ah, Cebu ba to?" :)

with the statement "ang ganda tlga ng cebu para sa inyo!" well i am very proud to say na OO! ang ganda ng cebu para sakin! it has managed to sustain its economic growth with or without the help of the national government. And while others are preoccupied by politicking and bickering, Cebuanos are focused with its goal - progress! And well, you can see the fruit of Cebuanos labor, skyscrapers sprouting like mushrooms, new investments, and major constructions here and there. With the mountains as the metropolis' backdrop similar to HongKong - for me....oo ang ganda ng Cebu!
