whether you like it or not, still in the end of the day... cebu needs to implement mass transport system in order for the city to cope with the rapid developments over the metro. we cannot deny the fact that cebu is growing as a mature one... having BRT in the major through-fares is good, but full eradication of jeepneys would harm the growing unemployed people regardless if the city would provide jobs, maybe we should take into consideration that they will ply over secondary roads and implement rules that would worth them to follow ... :)

dili madalidali ug ban ang jeepneys or phase out like the tricycles and tartanilla. it is part of the cebuano culture. ang maayo is strict regulation of the jeepney drivers kay as what has been stated by other forerunners nga walay disciplina ang mga jeepney drivers kay wala man say ayo ang training gikan sa lto nga nag issue sa mga license. naturally ang output depends on what is inputed.

dili pa hunungan ang fuente to whatever type of vehicle bisan ug tourist bus pa na siay ug ang tanan nga moagi sa circle para ang traffic is smooth sailing. magbutang sila ug strict law enforcer nga kanang dili nimo mapadangogan ug 50pesos nga imong isuksuk sa imong licencia.

para naku its in the enforcement of traffic rules and regulation nga kulang kay wala man tay ayo nga driver's education curriculum nga gi integrate sa atong eskuwelahan mismo. hinaut nga with the k+12 curriculum in place usa na siya na mga vocational/lifelong skills ang i tudlo sa atong mga eskuwelahan. there is a whole bunch of books on driver education/training diri. duna ba moy gigamit dinha pag acquire ninyo sa inyong mga drivers license? if the answer is no, then the problem is with the lto/citom not the jeepneys.

we are marketing cebu to the world. not just to the locals.

this could be a culture or infrastructure thing. culture (jeepneys) vs infrastructure (efficient transport system).

both culture and infrastructure are important. hard to judge where to prioritize.

but when thinking of the transportation system (backbone of economy). it should prioritize more on how efficient it is over how it adds to the cultural aspect of a certain city. it is good though to combine both.

Agree on your statement that our lawmakers should study further on making comprehensive safety nets.

If Cebu is to become an special zone, I would like to make Hongkong or Singapore or Japan as a model - that despite it's high development, it's not losing grip of it's identity, culture and history.

Eton Properties to develop Coral Reef in Mactan Island

LISTED real estate firm Eton Properties Philippines Inc. is considering the acquisition and development of a 35-hectare beach property known as Coral Reef in Mactan Island, Cebu into a high-end mixed-used project inspired by Sentosa Island in Singapore. In an interview with reporters, Eton president Danilo Ignacio tagged the plan as a “priority” project. The move comes as Eton sets to launch new projects, most recently its first luxury condominium in Eton Centris in Quezon City called Ascent.

So, you are saying there are too many jeepneys? (there will be no competing if there are just enough jeepneys as the ridership). That would be like pointing all fingers to the LTFRB, in my honest opinion! Why kill all jeepneys when what you wanted was to remove only a few? Do you really believe a sick man ought to be shot because he has a swollen leg? Isn't amputation a lot better? Let's be clear on the things we do here.

We always hear the traffic police undergoing training and get deputized to make the roads seamless ever since. What happened to that program? In 2010 it was printed in the dailies that the police will send 6 to 8 police officers from every police outpost to do traffic. I don't see that done, IMO. Maayo lang sa sugod, kadugayan, mahilis lang dayon! That's a big problem!

so we hire an army of traffic enforcers just to solve the problems caused by jeepneys? what a way to solve a problem when the real problem is the jeepneys. Lets face it, jeepneys are inefficient. If we truly want to progress, we must learn to give up things that keep us from progressing. Jeepneys are one of them. Jeepneys might have worked before but the problem is Cebu is not the same Cebu as before. Why settle for mediocrity when we can improve our transport system?

and about reducing jeepneys to lessen traffic? it will make it a more inefficient transport system.

Jeepneys:

Reduce Jeepneys = reduce traffic = a lot of people will be stranded because there are not enough jeepneys

Add More Jeepneys = more traffic = no one will get stranded

BRT:

Few Buses = Less traffic = a lot of people will be stranded because there are not enough buses

Add More Buses = Same traffic as few buses = no one will get stranded

More buses wont equate to more traffic because the BRT system eliminates competition. The BRT system is more organized. Buses have their own lanes and adding more buses will not equate to more traffic. That my friend shows how inefficient jeepneys are.

and by the way, economists call the Philippine economy the "Jeepney Economy" because our economy is inefficient and easily overtaken by our neighbors. Its the metaphor used by economists :ohno:

Jeepneys are very convenient like shared taxi ..24/7/low fare.near work/shopping/home.

Bus stations also are when fully implemented in the city.

We 99% are against corporate greed.

Cebu City government isnt a corporation. its a government institution so they dont earn money from the bus rapid system. the income they get from the BRT will be spent on the maintenance of the BRT. Corporate greed? the government doesnt even earn money from the BRT, it loses money through subsidies. we should thank the government for giving subsidies(assistance paid by the government) to basic services including the BRT to lower the prices.

Look at the picture. A big empty road spaces at all times unused especially during traffic hours. India has surplus money and wide space to play which Cebu City have to borrow...

look at the left side of the picture? and the right side is clearly an intersection w/ a stop light? and what are those small vehicles colored yellow and green?

^^80% of the downtown's buildings are modernist architecture. I just don't get it how a tartanilla could make a nostalgic "colonial" scene with that. Is it because they look drab and dirty and old?

Only a few parts of the old CBD are colonial looking. Maybe the tartanillas could be confined there, if they are planning to revive the tartanilla as a transport option with regards to heritage and tourism.

BRt, if approved, jeepneys will be faced out. These puj drivers will loose one source of income in order for them to raise their family. If one family looses its source of income, they will take part of any of the following, 1*die hungry, 2*grow uneducated, 3*be one of those street beggars or below-the-bridge boarders, and 4*snatchers, pick.pocketers, etc.,. Another economic problem. XD

What will happen to those unused jeepneys? Well, filipinos are very good at recycling. These pujs will be used for private purposes. We wont let big things stay useless.

Result? An even worse traffic congestion.

IMHO. :-)

^^how can they be hungry if those jeepney drivers will be absorbed to work in BRT lines? How sure you are that the government will disregard them? Do you think a project is feasible or do you think that the project will be implemented by the government if it creates hunger to most people?

They will be absorbed. Thats a very good idea. One issue resolved.

But what about the jeepneys? Where will they go? Yes, they wont be used as what a typical jeepney would do. Instead, they will be used for private purposes. These cars will still be used for private purposes. There are thousands, if not, tens of thousands of jeepneys that are operated nowadays. Where will these vehicles go? (i might need clarification on this issue but this is how i see things) xD

you have some pretty understandable points, right there. but think of the following as well...

1. the BRT will NOT replace all jeepneys completely. jeepneys will still be used to 'feed' the system by taking passengers from smaller roads to BRT stations.
2. the jobless drivers will be given both driving and non-driving jobs once the BRT is implemented. remember, the system will probably operate AT LEAST 5 buses for each route. the system can run from 5 am to 9 pm. that would be two shifts. two drivers for each bus multiplied by the number of buses multiplied by the number of routes. you do the math. that's still a lot of jobs. and not to mention the jobs for the maintenance of the buses, the stations, etc.
3. jeepneys carry a maximum of 20 people. buses can probably carry around 40. if you were to transport 200 people, that would take 10 jeepneys OR 5 buses. now image the amount of deadly gases these jeepneys give off. also, big buses can carry even wheel-chair bound individuals as well as people with bikes and scooters. jeepneys can't.
4. buses follow a schedule, jeepneys don't. so whether or not the bus is full, your bus leaves on time.
5. buses have specific stops, jeepneys do too. but j drivers often think they're always above the law. they can even stop right in the middle of the road, hold off a long line of other vehicles for one passenger.
6. the BRT will carry a brand. the brand will be marketed to attract even those who own private vehicles. if they see how effective, efficient, and convenient the system is, they will support it and leave their cars at home.

Yep! So that makes the issue about source of income for familys basic needs lighter.

Another point is. The existence of the jeepney, itself. I really dont have any idea about where will these vehicles go. I need to be enlightened regarding this specific issue. XD

but to answer your question about jeepneys:

remember that the BRT will only be implemented IN CEBU, not the entire philippines. when the railway was scrapped in cebu, they didn't worry about the trains. they sold them to the azucarera of bais. problem solved. i heard cebu jeep makers are among the best in the country. i'm sure people from other islands would be willing to buy our old jeepneys. so, don't worry about jeepneys owners worrying about their jeeps.

Rama: No total ban of PUJs in Fuente
By Jessica Ann R. Pareja/FPL (The Freeman) Updated November 15, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama clarified that there will not be a total ban of Public Utility Jeepneys at the Fuente Osmeña Circle once his plan to decongest traffic in the area is implemented.

He clarified that PUJ access will only be limited because they will not be allowed to make a full turn round the circle going to their destination.

Rama said there are routes that PUJ can take instead of passing around the circle like Don Gil Garcia, Larsian Road, B Rodriguez, Arlington Pond, Juana Osmeña and J. Llorente streets.

He said the City Traffic Operations Management will finalize the route but he assured that there will be a dialogue with PUJ drivers and operators before they implement a new traffic route.

Rama said that since the circle will be limited to vehicles, he will extend the park and leave only three lanes available for vehicles.

The mayor said that extending the park will shorten the pedestrian, thus, increase their safety when crossing.

He also plans to change the system of parking from diagonal parking to horizontal parking.

Rama said that the Parks and Playgrounds Commission, the M. Lhuillier and CITOM will be in-charge of the project.

He will also consult Governor Gwendolyn Garcia since there is a pending case over the ownership of the property. (FREEMAN)

ill try to look for the rendering from SBA... this project may go ahead bcoz the centennial of the fountain is nearing. :) 20M may go to the Ramos Market although the plan and rendering is still being made... quite dismayed by the Cebu City zoo, only 5M is allocated for the rehab.

All of these innuendos and made-ups to support BRT.
1- Displaced jeep drivers will be employed. One bus to support 10-12 employess.
....That is feasible but not financialy affordable...
2 - Double fare solution -Jeepneys will feed the system.
....Riders have extra money and time.
3. Where is the statement that says: BRT WILL BE CHEAPER THAN JEEPNEYS.
....Raising the price after a deal is not uncommon.
4. Where is the statement that says: BRT WILL BE 25/8 BETTER THAN the 24/7 JEEPNEYS.

IMHO. :-)

Sorry: "faced out" = "phased out"?

....

ok, if we have to be technical about this....

1. innuendos - i don't think that's the right word that you want to use.
2. displaced drivers - if you get laid off and you lose your source of income, do you sit in one corner and mope? no. you go out and look for another job. if i were a jeep driver, i'd much prefer wearing a bus driver's uniform bearing a brand than drive for one person with no work benefits.
3. doube fare solution - question: are you even a commuter here? do you not know that to get to banilad from englis, you have to take at least three jeepney rides? now you're very concerned about the amount of time spent by the commuters on the road. the BRT will have dedicated lanes. that means the trip will be unobstructed and the schedule maintained. with jeepneys, you're lucky if the driver is young and quite a daredevil, you'll reach ayala in no time. but if your driver prefers to take his time, then you are in trouble. don't forget the passengers who want to board and disembark a jeep in the middle of the road or even when the light is green. talk about patronizing bad behavior.
4. was it ever mentioned that the BRT will be 25/8? even manila's LRT calls it a day at around 10 pm.
5. 99.99% of sscers have or have access to personal transportation? are we basing this on a study? or you've actually just conditioned yourself to believe this?
6. the whole philippines pays for manila's trains. if you call that cheap, then i don't know what else to say.

No slerz, I think you're missing the point. I am referring to Modernism, not Modernity. Modernism is an architectural style that peaked during the 70s. Modernity is a lifestyle.

The language of 70's modernism so prevalent in downtown buildings is different from the way people understand the word "modern" in the present.

Who says being modern has no room for pedestrianization? If you are very well-updated, in other cities in the world, you would see these trends without being too much backward looking. Pedestrianization, al fresco, etc. these are not things of the past exclusively.

I am no modernist. In fact, I am the one who's been posting a lot of things here about architecture and heritage. And I am certainly NOT IGNORANT about these trends. New Urbanism?

I am merely saying, if we want to revive tartanillas to complement our heritage sites, then yes, but I don't think the whole downtown is compatible with that. Put in the tartanillas where they could complement the bigger picture.

BTW, those pictures are showing MODERN solutions as well. The people who made that project are my friends.

Nobody has the right to stop whatever legit businesses people want to put-up. Having said that, jeepney drivers plying their assigned routes will be there until the operators see that their operations are futile and not worth their while or the ridership shy away from them and opt for a better substitute transport system, that's the bottom line. Tartanilla, bus, cabs, trains or a cart, etc., whichever is of more service to the consumers, these modes will do on specific needs, IMO.

I can see people with high emotions here, I'd say no, don't let it shade your usual rational facilities. Emotions, like air, they fly in a blink. Some linger for some time and some are too fleeting. Let's weigh things well.

Actually, with regards to public transport, the government does have that right. Operators are provided franchises and certificates of public convenience: A temporary lease of public property (right of way/roads) in exchange for providing a service for public benefit. If they no longer serve public benefit, it is only right and should be the duty of the government to revoke such.

For example, route 21B and route 20 are now similar routes due to the ban on intercity jeeps from the city center, thus either of the routs should have been cancelled and merged with the other, to avoid duplication, confusion and overcapacity.

Banilad to Inglis route problem maybe not popular. Either you move or ask the City to fix your problem. Try to do that a big Corporate transit. Distance sitios will have to pay double fare. Cebu City south routes are quite extensive but not Banilad.
25/8 was a pun, maybe you can promise better than 24/7 jeepneys, As you have admitted services are upto 10pm but how early 5.am.? My mom used to go at 4:15 a.m.
SSC or internet access is expensive. Average daily paid workers would have to work 2.5 to 3 days to pay the monthly bill assuming somebody else paid the installation fees.
My many years of payroll audits did revised a lot of re-billings.
The whole philippines pays for manila's trains. if you call that cheap,
Its is not cheap but a wise investment. It creates the intrinsic value of properties without disrupting the access by private investors on use of public road system.

It may be wise from the point of view of the users and the GMMA's economy, but not to the rest of the country, who pay for but not partake in it.

I don't see the point of bringing up BNSF. So the stock price of BNSF is up. What is the connection?
You may be confusing freight and light rail lines. Freight is a big, growing business. Specially for landlocked areas like US, Eurozone, and Thailand with long tracks of land. But freight and commuter rails are different wholly different beasts. I have not heard of any Commuter/LRT system that operates without subsidy.

This also does not negate my point that GMMA is reaping the benefits of LRT, which is subsidized in BILLIONS by the rest of the country. And the rest of the country still does not enjoy its benefits. So is it a wise investment? Depends on your point of view.

Cebuano orchestra to hold debut concert
Cebu Daily News
7:46 am | Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

A Cebuano orchestra will have its first public concert on Dec. 10 at the Cebu Cultural Center in Lahug, Cebu City.

The launching of the Cebu Symphony Orchestra (CSO) brings together Cebuano musicians who are former members of the Cebu Youth Symphonic Orchestra (CYSO) and Peace Philharmonic Philippines (PPP).

The new group was formed last March.

“Our goal is to develop a high standard in music, and to revive the popularity and appreciation of classical music,” said Rey Abellana, one of the founders.

Musicians will perform under the baton of Professor Roberto del Rosario, the musical director and conductor of the orchestra.

Renowned pianist Ingrid Sala Santamaria will perform with the group as piano soloist.

The CSO started with only seven members meeting on a weekly basis.

Today, it has grown to 87 members. The group is also supported by the Cebu City government and the Cebu Provincial government.

The new orchestra is expected to offer two to three major concerts in a year, working toward the vision of putting Cebu in the world’s cultural map.

They will be playing classical pieces, Visayan folk songs, Broadway hits and Christmas songs.

There will be a matinee show at 3 p.m. and a gala show at 8 p.m.

CSO, a gem for Cebu, to hold concert
Sun Star Cebu | Monday, November 14, 2011

A cultural gem has just been added to the crown of the Asean City of Culture that Cebu is: the Cebu Symphony Orchestra (CSO). It fills a vital element in the artistic soul of Cebu. It is a gem the Cebuanos can truly call their own and be proud of.

Not long after the Peace Philharmonic Philippines ceased operations, its orphaned musicians banded themselves on their own for sheer love of making music together. From a seminal group of about 20, it has swelled to more than 70 and is still growing by the week--an incontrovertible affirmation of the Cebuano innate musicianship and love of music.

Touched by their unflagging enthusiasm, a group of professionals and businessmen met to find ways of giving new life to the only symphony orchestra outside Manila.

Towards this end, a foundation dedicated to supporting the operation and sustainability of the orchestra will be established in the near future. Meantime, the Cebu Rotary Club Foundation, Inc. (CRCF)--headed by Consul John F. Domingo and Jose Soberano III, chairman and president respectively--was chosen to support the endeavor. The CRCF is the project arm of the Rotary Club of Cebu.

Thus the CSO was born, or more correctly, revived. For some decades back, a symphony orchestra by that name had existed. But even previous to this there was the symphony orchestra of the University of San Carlos back in the 50s.

While the CSO is predominantly made up of Cebuanos and a few Filipinos from other regions, it also includes Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Norwegian nationals residing in Cebu.

The CSO will be formally launched with a maiden concert on December 10 at the Cebu Cultural Center in the UP Lahug Campus. The concert will feature renowned pianist Ingrid Sala-Santamaria, with Roberto del Rosario conducting. Proceeds from the concert will be used to purchase badly needed and to defray operating expenses of the orchestra. Renato Kintanar

CEU plans new purchases, education facility in Cebu
Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:38 Miguel R. Camus
E-mail Print PDF
LISTED Centro Escolar University (CEU) is keen on expanding its education business with planned acquisitions and a new education facility in Cebu City.

In a press briefing with reporters on Tuesday, CEU president Maria Cristina Padolina revealed that the company is interested in acquiring a Metro Manila-based hospital to complement its health and science course offerings.

She said while CEU is not in any active talks for the proposed acquisition, the company is targeting a tertiary hospital with at least 50 beds.

“A hospital would be a good complement to our health sciences program,” Padolina said. “We will use it largely for education purposes.”

About 60 percent o CEU’s 21,000-strong student population is taking health and science courses such as pharmacy, medical technology and dentistry. These courses, along with tourism and IT-management, have help offset the slowdown in demand for nursing courses, Padolina said.

CEU is also planning to build a facility in Cebu City starting next year to cater to students taking post-graduate studies. She said the new campus, which would be CEU’s fifth, will need an initial investment of P50 million.

A rather surprising move from Aboitiz..But whatever it is, my best wishes for this company...They have been one of Cebu's pride.

While the Gotianuys of Filinvest and the Gokongwei's of JG Summit are starting to come back to Cebu, Aboitiz will be transferring to Manila.

2 companies to be relocated: Aboitiz to transfer AEV, AP to Manila (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=748616&publicationSubCategoryId=107)
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated November 16, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments

CEBU, Philippines - The Aboitiz Group announced yesterday the transfer of the headquarters of two of its publicy-listed companies to Manila.

Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV) and Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower) are two of the most profitable companies under the flagship of the Aboitiz Group, which has been based in Cebu for over 90 years now.

“With the acquisitions in the past few years, over 70 percent of our profits come from businesses in Luzon. We have transformed ourselves from a regional company to a national enterprise, having to transact more with stakeholders based in the capital. Our main market and customers for electricity are in Luzon,” said AEV president and chief executive officer Erramon Aboitiz.

Employees to be affected

Although, the transfer of the two listed companies will not mean a total relocation of the entire Aboitiz Group headquarters, the move, however, will affect about 200 personnel who will be asked to decide if they also want to relocate to Manila, or be transferred to another business unit that is based in Cebu.

AEV recently sold its shipping and logistics units the Aboitiz Transport System (ATS) to Negros Navigation, in order to focus on its core and more profitable businesses — power generation, banking, and food.

According to Aboitiz, reducing the frequency of travel to transact with Manila-based stakeholders will enhance employees’ efficiency and productivity.

“Our growing investments in Luzon, however, are demanding more and more of our attention. By continuing to be based in Cebu, we end up compromising many things in terms of being able to deal with these stakeholders more effective,” added Aboitiz.

Considering that it is also hard for their family to decide “emotionally” on this business matter, just like when they decided to let go of its shipping arm, which has been the company’s iconic business since it started, Aboitiz said the move to Manila has been a discussion for generations.

“We feel it is high time to make the move,” he said.

In a press conference held yesterday at the Aboitiz Group headquarters, Txabi Aboitiz, AEV chief human resource and quality officer said that while the transfer was a challenging and difficult decision to make, the company will extend whatever assistance is necessary to help employees who will be affected by the relocation.

The relocation process is expected to be completed by June 2013.

“Cebu will always be our heritage and our original home. But, as professionals, we sometimes have to make tough calls and do what is best for the business.

“It is our responsibility to our shareholders as well as to ourselves to do what is necessary for what is best for the Aboitiz Group,” said Aboitiz.

Tax implications to Cebu

This move will not only affect some core employees that need to be relocated to Manila, but it has also tax implications.

This means that the Cebu City government will lose some tax revenues from the Group. Txabi Aboitiz said they are still calculating how much would the city lose in taxes.

MORE EFFICIENT

AEV and AboitizPower officials have to travel from Cebu to Manila at least thrice a week to do meetings, and business transactions in the capital. This has caused some inconvenience, inefficiency and more stress for the executives to travel back and forth./NLQ (FREEMAN)

CEU to build new campus in Cebu, in search of hospital for Medicine program

MANILA, Philippines—Centro Escolar University is beefing up its capacity as a key provider of tertiary education by building a new campus in Cebu and scouting for a hospital within Metro Manila that would pave the way for the introduction of Medicine in its academic offering.

Top officials of CEU, one of the country’s largest private universities, commemorated, on Tuesday, the company’s 25th year of listing on the Philippine Stock Exchange.

In a press briefing after the ceremonies, CEU president Ma. Cristina Padolina said the university would start building a five-story building in downtown Cebu near the historic Colon district next year. This new facility, which will rise on a 2,000-square meter lot, will pave the way for CEU’s offering of undergraduate programs in Cebu.

But by the coming school-year in June, she said, CEU would already be able to start offering continuing education and graduate school programs in Cebu using leased premises. Once its new campus is completed by 2014, that’s when CEU could accommodate a bigger population and thus start offering undergraduate programs in Cebu, according to Padolina.

The upcoming Cebu complex, which will be developed in phases, will be its fifth campus in the country. CEU currently has campuses in Manila, Malolos (Bulacan) and two in Makati. An initial budget of P50 million has been earmarked for the expansion in Cebu.

I don't see the point of bringing up BNSF. So the stock price of BNSF is up. What is the connection?....And the rest of the country still does not enjoy its benefits. So is it a wise investment? Depends on your point of view.
NO GOVERNMENT RUN ENTERPRISE EVER MAKES MONEY.
be it a BRT, LRT,Housing projects, Hospitals, Schools.etc...
Any increase in cost of service or tuition is considered as form of taxation.
The annual budget gets higher and intentionally exhausted every fiscal year,
since all government agencies competes to deplete the resource .

BRT (socialist invention) and LRT (Manila style) both have
dedicated road. Both are non-profit and reduce traffic space.
But not this....!!!
Germany has one of the world's best and most efficient passenger rail systems.
It blends with our small streets traffic.

Capitol, CH to coordinate on dev’t of Fuente Osmeña
By Rizel S. Adlawan SunStar Cebu Daily
Wednesday | November 16, 2011

CEBU Gov. Gwen Garcia is confident Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama will coordinate with her regarding his plan to develop the Fuente Osmeña rotunda, even though the Capitol filed a case claiming ownership of the historical landmark.

The governor was asked about her reaction to Rama’s announcement that he would “repackage” Fuente Osmeña.

“I’m sure that when he talked about that he also remembers what we had previously discussed for Fuente Osmeña. He’s very well aware of the dispute as regards the ownership, which is in fact in court,” Garcia told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

‘Massive investments’ with Cedz
By Mia A. Aznar | SunStar Cebu Daily
Sunday | November 13, 2011

IF THE Cebu Economic Development Zone (Cedz) is created, the positive effects will be felt in the long term.

Board of Investments (BOI) Governor Geronimo Sta. Ana said that the creation of the Cedz will be different from how the Mactan Export Processing Zone works because it will be independent from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority and the BOI.

Sta. Ana, who is the governor representing the private sector, admitted that it will be a headache for the Department of Finance, as it will not get as much revenue from Cebu, but he said this will pave the way for new “massive investments.”

He said that with massive investments come multiplier effects in employment and other economic activity.

Just carried away seeing the profile of a town that used to be a shelter of NPA's a long time ago. Not to mention a name that's being linked with a marijuana plantation. Glad to know that the other side of Cebu is also doing good.

If balamban will become a component city then she will recieve a big share in ira due to her vast land area, imo, the biggest among cebu lgu.
While locally generated incomes are still counting for more, more low rise commercial building are sprouting in pondol and buanoy area and the public market is always expanding.

A CAR ON THE SIDEWALK AGAIN.
The sidewalk beautification project is going to be a failure.
People who are not watching LED display had to walk
on the street traffic as seen on your video..
(n.b.:LED is made big to be watched at a distance.)

^^lol, it's not a sidewalk... it's a car / armored car (whatever the term) or taxi loading and unloading area of Metrobank like the one infont of Robinsons Place entrance (taxi loading and unloading) and same with CebuDoc. Those are intended for cars so dili gyud nato maingong nga dili pwede ang sakyanan...
and that area infront of Metrobank (both sides of the road) is also a loading and unloading area for jeepney passengers. Siguro mo uyon ko sa imong sentiment nga di pwede mag tambay ang mga taw diha if ang mode of transpo is mrt or brt but as of now knowing jeepney ra gyud ang mode of transpo so you cannot expect people stay on jeepney ticket terminal to wait for those jeepneys to arrive:D

Schools start to specialize
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/business/2011/11/16/schools-start-specialize-190919

SEVERAL universities in Cebu have started to specialize in specific areas of information technology to meet the demands of local companies, said top official of the Cebu Educational Develoment for Information Technology Inc. (Cedf-it).

Cedf-it president Greg Gabison said in a recent interview members of the academe coordinated with local IT companies to address problems on manpower supply in the fast-growing industry.

He said USJR focused more on mobile development using the Android platform; Cebu Institute of Technology-University and the University of the Philippines-Cebu have focused on natural processing language; while the University of Cebu focused more on networking and technical support.

Please define "parking", para di ta maglubog-lubog sa diskusyon diri!

AFAIK, whenever I visit the bank, vehicles are allowed to enter that space and clients can alight near the main door with frisking guards.

But I have also seen big bank customers' cars with chauffeurs wait for sometime in the front door until their bosses get out of the bank!

Workers at the Citta di Mare, Filinvest Land Inc.’s development at the South Road Properties, put in extra hours to beat the deadlines. The name is Italian for “city by the sea” and fits the theme of the 50.6-hectare development, a large part of which will be a resort town. Citta di Mare is only one of the projects rising at the SRP. Set for opening late next year or early 2013 is the SM Seaside City which will be Citta di Mare’s neighbor. SM Seaside City promises to be the biggest mall in the Visayas and Mindanao.

A portion of the South Coastal Road has been closed while the SM Seaside City at the South Road Properties (SRP) lays culverts for its drainage system. The new megamall complex reportedly costs “at least P20 billion.” The mall itself will be twice as big as the SM City Cebu at the North Reclamation Area and will be the biggest mall in the Visayas and Mindanao. The mall and the church will be the first to be developed in the complex. The target opening date is from late 2012 to early 2013. Later, a convention center, residential, office and hotel towers, and hospital and school buildings will also be constructed.

I agree. It's a drop-off bay for quick unloading. Sa ngalan pa lang daan, dili gyud na pwede mo-park. Tan-awon nato nang sa Cebu Doc, ilang drop-off bay clear of vehicles most of the time because obviously IT IS PART OF THE SIDEWALK.

If Rama wants to follow the Champs Elysees, maybe he can look into the traffic solution of the many prestigious banks lining the avenue, since the sidewalks there are strictly for pedestrians only.

Cebu City gov't starts"4 p.m. habit" program (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=749446&publicationSubCategoryId=107)
By Niña G. Sumacot/LPM (The Freeman) Updated November 18, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government has started a program called the “4 p.m. habit” in which vendors in the city will simultaneously clean their respective areas when 4 p.m. strikes.

Doctor Lucille Mercado, chairman of the Garbo Asenso Sumbanan Alyansa (GASA), said they conducted the pilot episode along Osmeña Boulevard.

“Matag hapon gyud na nila buhaton after ug mapasalamaton kaayo ko kay mikooperar gyud ang mga sidewalk vendors,” Mercado said.

Along the boulevard alone, there are close to 300 vendors who are members of GASA, she said.

With this program, Mercado said the vendors contributed greatly to the cleanliness of the city, especially in major thoroughfares, explaining that customers would flock to their stores if their stalls are clean.

“Nindot gyud kaayo tan-awon kay matag alas kwatro sa hapon, dunay tawo nga na-assign nga magdala og bell unya i-tiling-tiling na niya, unya magdungan dayon ang mga sidewalk vendors sa pagdala sa ilang mga tagsa-tagsa ka silhig ug dust pan,” she said.

Mercado said the city government has no budget for the implementation of the program but they decided to implement it with the voluntary service of the vendors.

Aside from the boulevard, the program will extend to other streets of the city soon, Mercado said.

Part of the program is the cleaning of big canals in the city every quarter of the year. (FREEMAN)

I enjoyed my recent stay in the Visayas region. Cebu is definitely a developing, up and coming area. Hopefully something can be done to ease traffic, especially coming to/from the airport in Mactan into the downtown area. The dual lane Mactan-Mandaue bridge is in dire need of replacement.

A few more pics from around town...

these roads are typical of many roads in the reclamation area. for now, this road has no use but once robinsons maxilom is in full swing, im sure the road network from sm to robinsons will be developed (like the improvement they are doing with the road fronting white gold club.

China will fund the P1.4B Cebu North Road improvement project if approved
By Elias O. Baquero | SunStar Cebu Daily

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has proposed a road improvement project from the Cebu Provincial Capitol to the northern town of San Remigio.

If approved, the 109.45-kilometer road project will cost P1.4 billion and will be funded by the Chinese Government.

City worries over P5.4-M loss with firm’s transfer
By Jujemay G. Awit | SunStar Cebu Daily
Thursday | November 17, 2011

THE Cebu City Government will lose about P5.4 million in business taxes if the Aboitiz group of companies relocates its offices to Manila.

The amount represents the total business taxes the Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV) and Aboitiz Power Corp. (AP) pay the City Government.

This year, the City received P3.7 million in business taxes from AEV and P1.7 million from Aboitiz Power.

Acting City Treasurer Tessie Camarillo assured that the City may not lose the entire amount next year.

She hopes that some units of the Aboitiz group would maintain offices in Cebu City.

Lapu hotels, resorts optimistic
By Katlene O. Cacho | SunStar Cebu Daily
Thursday | November 17, 2011

HOTELS and resorts in Lapu-Lapu City are optimistic about their prospects in 2012 following an improvement of occupancy rates this year.

Hembler Mendoza, administrative coordinator for Hotels and Resort of the Lapu-Lapu City Tourism, Historical and Cultural Affairs Association, reported that hotels and resorts reported 71 percent occupancy this year, far better than last year’s performance.

“Last year (2010) was not good because we lost guests due to the hostage crisis in August. The industry regained and picked up and this year’s performance is quite better than 2010,” Mendoza said at the sidelines of Lapu-Lapu City’s Tourism Night last Tuesday.

He said they are optimistic about next year’s prospects. “There is a possibility we could grow stronger next year.”

Biaños to expand to Luzon (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/business/2011/11/17/bianos-expand-luzon-191119)

Thursday, November 17, 2011

LOCAL pizza chain Biaños is planning to penetrate the Luzon market in the middle of next year through franchising.

Alberto Biaño, owner of the pizza chain, said the expansion is meant to strengthen the presence of the business in unserved areas in the country, particularly those in the province.

Share your thoughts on Pacquiao-Marquez III

“Filipinos love to eat pizza but they always look for pizzas at affordable prices,” Biaños said in a recent interview.

Biaños Pizzaderia currently has 20 outlets in the Visayas and Mindanao. About eight outlets are in Cebu.

Biaño said he ignored fears his business might be not do well in the market with the presence of commercial pizza chains. He said his pizza has found a niche market to serve.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) turned over the final report of the Feasibility Study for the New Passenger Terminal and Master Plan of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport to the Philippine Government on November 10, 2011. The report contains studies on the condition of existing airport facilities, environmental analysis, air traffic demand forecast, airport master plan, and feasibility study for the new passenger terminal. Resident Representative Kim Jinoh of KOICA Philippine Office handed over the report to General Manager Nigel Paul Villarete of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA).

The project seeks to improve passenger safety and air transportation infrastructure in Cebu. It is envisioned that the upgrading of the MCIA would promote tourist access to Cebu Province and Central Visayas, thereby increasing local employment and income generation.

In his remarks, Resident Representative Kim said that the findings and recommendations of the feasibility study and master plan should be immediately implemented, given the fact that the airport is already operating at an overcapacity. “I put our local partners to task into making full use of the outputs of our project. I hope that MCIAA and DOTC would be able to implement the airport upgrading at the soonest possible time in order to meet the growing demands of Cebu’s vibrant economy. It is also worth noting that the complete development of the airport would immensely contribute to the Philippine Development Plan’s target of developing safe, efficient, viable and strategic transport infrastructure in the country."

The study was conducted over a one-year period and was made possible through a US$ 1.1 million grant from the Korean government.

A waiting shed has been constructed at the center island in front of Cebu City Marriot Hotel in CBP, the pedestrian walk has also been paved with brick pavers.

I find the shed at the center island quite unusual. In Hong Kong, a waiting shed at the center island is usually a loading/unloading area for a tram, or in our case a loading and unloading area for the BRT.

Is Ayala preparing for the BRT?

City government to sell 12 SRP lots
By Jessica Ann R. Pareja and Rene U. Borromeo (The Freeman) Updated November 20,
Link: http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=750025&publicationSubCategoryId=107

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Government plans to sell 12 small lots in the South Road Properties to generate some P1.2 billion income being eyed as one of the sources of income to support next year’s budget.

Each of the 12 lots will have an area of 2,600 square meters.

The subdivided lots will be sold at a retail floor price of P40,000 per square meter, which is the current appraised value of the SRP lot.

The lots will be bid out to interested investors following Commission on Audit bidding procedures, city officials assured.

The Cebu Investment Promotions Center has been proposing this strategy of bidding out of small lots at the SRP since last year because many investors have expressed interest to buy small parcels only.

The city might prioritize investors over those who want to buy the lot for non-commercial purposes because the SRP is considered as an economic zone.

The property to be subdivided is proposed to be located beside the property bought by SM Prime Holdings which is currently building its mall that will be as big as the Mall of Asia in Luzon.

Assistant City Administrator for Economic Enterprise Dominic Diño said the total area of the 12 lots, which is three hectares, is only one percent of the whole SRP property and selling it to small investors is in no way disadvantageous to the city.

Cebu City requires P800M to reach revenue target
SunStar Cebu Daily
Sunday | November 20, 2011

CEBU CITY -- In ten-and-a-half months, the Cebu City Government collected P3.8 billion in revenues.

According to the statement of monthly revenue collections covering January to Nov. 12, collection has reached P3,804,440,861.52.

This leaves the City about P800 million short of reaching its target of P4.6 billion for 2011.

The highest revenue came from the total business and other receipts, with P1.269 billion already collected.

Real property tax collection was only P609 million.

The second biggest revenue source for the City is the regular Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) from the National Government, at P1.023 billion so far or a monthly release of about P93 million.

Because of the new cities, Cebu City is expected to receive less than a billion in IRA next year.

The City also collected almost P124 million from seven economic enterprises and P77 million in regulatory fees.

By Rizel S. Adlawan | SunStar Cebu Daily

AN international environmental group initiated by the United Nations (UN) will assist towns in taking care of Cebu’s coastal resources.

JJ Harvey, Reef World Foundation manager, and Chloe Hunt, who serves as regional coordinator of the project, met the governor last Thursday afternoon.

Reef World is helping communities manage marine conservation projects in Moalboal and Lapu-Lapu City. They are offering lectures on standards of environmental practices aimed at protecting the marine environment.

Reef World said protecting marine resources supports growth of the diving and tourism industry in Cebu’s coastal areas.

The Philippines and Vietnam have agreed to support each other in the New7Wonders of Nature campaign. The decision was reached at the East Asia Inter-Regional Tourism Forum (Eatof) standing committee meeting yesterday in Cebu City.

The commitment to support the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River in the Philippines and Vietnam’s Halong Bay was part of the joint declaration of the Eatof, which was presented at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Cebu Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, who presided over the meeting, said it does not matter how the two destinations will be ranked, provided they gain enough support to be included in the New7Wonders of Nature.

Eatof seeks to promote tourism in 12 Asian provinces, including Cebu and Quang Ninh Province in Vietnam, where Halong Bay is located. Vu Thi Thu Thuy, vice chairperson of the Provincial People’s Committee in Vietnam, said there is no contest between Halong and the Subterranean River as Eatof will support both.

“It’s a win-win game for the strength of Eatof,” Thuy said.
