Guv to utilities: Put wires underground
(The Freeman) Updated December 15, 2011 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines -If Governor Gwendolyn Garcia will have her way, all electrical wires along the streets at least from Fuente Osmeña to the Provincial Capitol will be installed underground by early next year.

This was the request that she made to the Visayan Electric Company (VECO) and telecommunications companies, among others, whom she met yesterday.

Garcia hoped that the said companies will seriously consider her request to make Cebu City streets more pleasant to the eyes and to “recapture the lost beauty and grandeur” of the streets in Cebu.

But Ricky Lacson, Vice President of the Customer Services and Administration of VECO, refused to give a categorical answer, saying a lot of things shall be considered first.

Lacson cited civil works and approval of the plan as among the things that have to be considered before implementing the project which will entail millions of money.

Nevertheless, he said, they have included the matter in their recent meeting and right now they are studying their options.

For the meantime, he said, they have helped the Provincial Government in its beautification project by bundling up the several sagging electrical wires along the streets from Fuente Osmeña to the Provincial Capitol, or the extension of Osmeña Boulevard.

They also cleared up at least 22 electrical posts along the said stretch.

VECO has replaced rotten or wood poles with concrete ones. The new poles will serve as the new attachment structures of lines of telecommunication companies.

Furthermore, they installed uniform spans between poles, uniform pole heights at 45 feet tall and one lateral line feeding the loads along Osmeña Boulevard to reduce the number of lines crossing the road.

They also aligned poles and primary line as well as installed new transformer and primary line support construction, and sorted secondary wires and service drops.

The VECO was able to finish the job last November 27, just in time for yesterday’s inauguration of the Capitol of its beautification project along the said boulevard. — (FREEMAN)

RE : On Stop Flyover Movement

I fully support this idea. Even when I was not yet aware about heritage preservation, urban planning and etc (which i just learned from SSC), I already did not like flyovers. It's suffocating.

In addition, the mediocre thinking of our officials, for compliance design and poor maintenance will just make this piece of infra an eyesore.

I say, more road beautification and more road revolution activities.

Lets make our roads walkable.

Kana bang project nga naa'y gitawag nila ug WBS (work breakdown schedule) nga naka bar-chart tanang trabaho-on! Way "coordination", egsakto kaayong punga!

Haha!

Wala lang. Nahibong lang ko ganina pag lakaw2x nako from Fuente to Colon. LOL.

mahibong pa gyud sila. Kana man ganing gi gastuhan gyud og dako di paman gani ma han ay? Kani pa kahang gi limosan? I wonder why people here are expecting too much sa project nga donation lang?
I mean in details gyud. (Except atong from Capitol to Fuente near Anitas nga klaro gyud tong gi binuangan sa mga contractors) Lahi ra kaayo sa trinabah-an sa Capitol area.

btw, ang lamp post kay gi pareha tanan (pareha katag-as)from Fuente to Sancianco.

Ako sang gi susi rather than mo hisgot dayon kog tambaloslos diri not knowing what unsay nahitabo.

^^pareha man nuon tag concern bai like atong contractors nga nag buhat sa sidewalk sa Anitas, kita man gyud ko sa ilang pag trabaho ato nga tinamban (mao toy klarong ga dula dula) maong ako sad to silang gi reklamo bisag tuod og volunteer ra to sila pero nanumpa man sila nga mo volunteer silag trabaho nga tinarong pero wa man nila taronga, tabla rag gi yaga yagaan nila ang Sugbo...

"coordination"
Peace

Masquerade ball to raise funds for beautification
By Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/BRP (The Freeman)
Updated December 17, 2011

CEBU, Philippines - The Beautiful Cebu Movement Foundation Inc. will be holding a Masquerade Ball next year to raise funds to be used to beautify the major streets of Cebu City.

The chairwoman of the foundation, Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung, said that this event will be an evening of entertainment at the Grand Pacific Ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu Hotel and Casino, on Feb. 29, 2012.

Yeung, a businesswoman and philanthropist, said that she will be auctioning some of her collections as well as some collections of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia.

The entire show will be directed by Yeung’s son, Martin, who is a Hong Kong-based businessman.

“This will be an incredible, beautiful and once-in-a lifetime event,” Yeung said.

Officers and members of the foundation will be wearing their own respective Venetian inspired gowns which will be designed by Cebu’s famous designers.

Yeung said that her group is doing this for the love of Cebu. She herself has donated P1 million to the beautification project.

She reiterated that instead of criticizing Cebu, everyone must do their share.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama who attended the launching of the ball yesterday said that everyone should forget crab mentality and stop questioning motives.

“We need to beautify our city. Making Cebu beautiful is the right thing to do,” the mayor said. —(FREEMAN)

did you know that those models also predicted that it will hit Cebu?

This storm is very erratic maong daghan kaayog na surprise sa usab usab nga direction sa bagyo.
Even at the last minute nga mo landfall, all forecasting agencies except China ni agree nga sa Davao Oriental mo landfall but at the last minute, ni usab nasad ang direction sa bagyo og sa Surigao del Sur nuon ni landfall... sayop ang Japan, US, PAGASA, HK weather agencies. Just last night, gi predict nasad sa Japan nga mo tilap sa may Southern Cebu Dumaguete area pero diay to ni dretso diay sa Iligan, sayop nasad ang Japan.

pareha ani nga explanation... Japan ni, di ni PAGASA.
before the storm made landfall, gi forecast nila nga sa Boston mo igo.

Before it made landfall, the storm is about to hit Davao Oriental or as it moves towards Davao oriental and it intensified.

-but did you know that the path of the typhoon shifted at the last minute? It shifted slightly north upon making landfall and made landfall in Hinatuan instead of Boston, Davao Oriental...

that's why in their next report which is after 6 hours, the storm had already made landfall over Hinatuan and weakened slightly...

here's Japan's model
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/323/mindanaolandfall3b.png

the red line is supposed to be the original path of the storm but the typhoon shifted its path at the last min. Their first forecast (Japan, US and PAGASA) predicted that the storm will landfall in Boston. That slight change is normal for typhoons and forecasting agencies so it's not really a big deal coz in the first place, this storm's movement is very erratic..

— (FREEMAN)

If Cebu proceeds in that program it will have signal character for further Philippine cities in general to follow. Hopefully it will be implemented swiftly. I´m afraid though that the public will pay for such a beatification program through higher electricity and IT rates.

^^yup bai, more than 30 na ang patay sa Dumaguete...

Pasalamat gyud ta nga wa ni dayon diri sa Cebu coz I know this storm is different from the storm nga ni igo years ago like ni Lando nga naka tumba sa Christmas tree or ni ramon just last Oct 2011 nga gamay ra'g kada-ot maong ang reaction sa uban, same ra gihapon kay pareha ra daw sa ni aging mga bagyo nga wa kaayoy epekto. This storm was different kay ang development niya kalit kalit and is still far off the Philippines so maka buylo pa and base sa mga bagyo nga ingun ana sa history, dako gyud kaayo nag kada-ot and is deadly.
Last Tues until Thurs, consistent sila nga sa central Visayas gyud mo igo hitting Cebu island maong lisod sad kaayo balewala-on nalang nato.

even James Reynolds, the famous storm chaser around the world delivered his statement about his worries that this storm will hit Cebu...
James Reynolds =

Philippines Shipping Report Q1 2012 (Business Monitor International) (http://www.companiesandmarkets.com/Market-Report/philippines-shipping-report-q1-2012-743608.asp)

For 2012, the Port of Cebu has positioned itself as the trailblazer as far as Philippines ports sector is concerned, with highly impressive year-on-year (y-o-y) tonnage throughput growth of 24.43% forecast. This increase would see the Port of Cebu retain its place as the country's number one port in terms of tonnage throughput, ahead of the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), which we predict will enjoy healthy y-o-y growth of 7.40% in 2012.

We believe that the Philippines is set for strong, healthy economic growth over the long-term, and could be one of the best-performing markets in Asia over the coming decade. A low overall loan-todeposit ratio of 62%, a high Tier 1 capital ratio of 14.2%, and moderating non-performing loans, combined with the country's positive demographics story, all point to healthy growth potential. Over the long term, we also see strong potential in the Philippines' demographics. With the archipelago set to add almost 14mn to its population by the end of the decade, and per capita GDP to more than double, vast opportunity lies in the shipping sector.

Several Asian states, including the Philippines, have until now successfully balanced strong trade ties with China and security pacts with the US. The question is whether this will continue to be the case, or whether these countries will eventually have to align their security policies with China. For the foreseeable future, we believe that Asia's major states will not have to make such a decision. Neither China nor the US is exerting pressure on countries to choose sides for the time being. Should this change then the Philippines could find itself between a rock and a hard place.

Headline Industry Data

- 2012 tonnage throughput at MICT forecast to grow 7.40% to 20.08mn tonnes.
- 2012 tonnage throughput at the Port of Cebu forecast to increase 24.43% to 34.27mn tonnes.
- 2012 tonnage throughput at the Port of Davao forecast to rise by 5.82% to 11.46mn tonnes.
- The real value of the Philippines' total trade will rise by 5.0% this year, with exports totalling US$64.47bn, ahead of imports at US$63.48bn.

Metro Pacific also eyeing Cebu airport (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/top-news/20885-metro-pacific-also-eyeing-cebu-airport)
BusinessMirror

The Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Investment Corp. (MPIC) is keen on participating in the privatization of the Mactan Cebu International Airport.

“We are interested in Cebu. The smaller ones, we may not be interested with those,” said MPIC Chairman Manuel Pangilinan when asked of other airports his group is also eyeing.

MPIC, the local flagship of Hong Kong-based First Pacific Co. Ltd., has been vocal in expressing its interest in getting involved in the upgrade of airports, such as the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia).

“Cebu is big enough. There is a ready market for Cebu. It is probably the second-largest airport, next to Naia,” Pangilinan said when asked why MPIC has chosen Mactan Cebu airport.

The government has yet to announce the details of the bid for the facility. The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) needs money for its planned development into a world-class and modern airport.

Can local folks here or any SSC afford it too?

That's like $140,000 per unit. Condominiums here in PHL may cost less than that. That's too much for a country where average GDP per capita is $8900. The problem with China is, they are producing so much supply for so less demand. It's ending up in a price bubble. If it bursts, China's gonna go in a pothole like what happened in the U.S real estate back in 2008 on the onset of the financial crisis.

These issues about unoccupied cities is really worrying knowing that much of the world is dependent on the 'superficial' demand that China is creating for exporters.

Parchie

Yeah, good example. But it's not as good as it seems. There are no holes and bumps in it's roads but Kansai Airport is sinking at a rate of 2 inches per month! They are lining the basement of the airport with iron ore to load the sand faster and sink the island to its final settlement level quickly and installing hydraulic jacks at the columns to prevent differential settlement between columns.

yup i have seen the making of that japan airport... let me ask, do we have capabilities to do that?? i think we have... but may i ask is it costly??? i think we need to spend more money than beautifying or expanding the MCIA. in fact if that new airport will be built, wats the cost for maintenance? since its floating on reclaim land... just an opinion though

^^ The tragedy in Northern Mindanao could had been lessen if PNoy didn't chopped off disaster preparedness budget.

PNoy vetoed disaster preparation in 2011 budget :bash::bash:

05-Oct-11, 9:00 AM | Lira Dalangin-Fernandez, InterAksyon.com

MANILA, Philippines -- President Benigno Aquino III vetoed a provision in the 2011 budget that allocates money for disaster preparation under the P5-billion Calamity Fund.

Kabataan party-list Representative Raymond Palatino said this has weakened the capability of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to beef up preparations against typhoons and other calamities such as the recent typhoon Pedring and Quiel that have affected about three million people mostly living in Luzon and Metro Manila.

“The President made a tactical blunder when he disallowed use of funds for pre-disaster activities, building of relocation sites, and training of personnel. The veto is man-made disaster that should be reversed by the President himself,” Palatino said.

In his veto message on the 2011 national budget, Aquino said that the P5-billion Calamity Fund should be mainly used by the NDRRMC for “actual calamities” and not for “preparation of relocation sites/facilities, and training personnel engaged in direct disaster.” :ohno:

“I caution the inclusion of pre-disaster activities such as preparation of relocation sites/facilities, and training of personnel engaged in direct disaster in the use of the Calamity Fund. While said purpose is laudable, the same must be weighed against the imperious need of maintaining sufficient provision under the Calamity Fund for actual calamities and prevent its full utilization for pre-disaster activities. Moreover, I note that the provision for pre-disaster activities are embedded and subsumed in the programs and projects of various implementing agencies under this Act,” Aquino had said.

Re: Pnoy's decision:

By vetoing that, he already chose to be reactive than proactive.

Apparently the matuwid na daan is a crumbly viaduct over unstable ground. And the cracks are showing this early.

God bless the Philippines especially our brothers in Mindanao, who could not spend a merry Christmas.

Bottled water from Cebu on US shelves soon

By Mia A. Aznar
Monday, December 19, 2011

IF PLANS push through, bottled water made in Cebu could soon be sold in the United States.

James Abilla, the man behind St. James premium drinking water, told reporters there are plans to export the brand to the US sometime next year.

Unlike regular bottled water, Abilla explained that his product will be sold as gourmet water, along the likes of Evian and San Pellegrino.

Driven by a desire to improve the bottled water industry in Cebu, Abilla designed his own bottle, which is covered by intellectual property, and invested on equipment that would help achieve the quality he has envisioned for his brand.

He said that when he started, bottled water in Cebu was dominated by just one player and that there was no innovation introduced for so long. He felt there was an opportunity to introduce something new to the industry, which led him to invest in a $5-million plant to produce St. James premium drinking water.

Abilla also clarified that he did not name the product after himself. Rather, the brand is named after St. James the apostle, and that he embarked on a pilgrimage leading to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain and prayed to the apostle, for permission to use his name for the product.

In the two and a half years since he began to distribute St. James water, Abilla said he declined from marketing his product, preferring instead to introduce it to clients and letting them rave about it.

“The only marketing tool I have is the St. James webpage. That’s it,” he told reporters.

Abilla admitted he gets more inquiries from foreigners than from locals about St. James water, but isn’t worried about not being at the top of the bottled water industry.

“These are those who understand that they have to buy at a certain price to get a certain type of quality,” he explained.

Abilla said that they only use 100 percent virgin plastic, which is stipulated by Bureau of Food and Drug regulations. Unlike other brands, St. James bottles have a more rubbery texture and do not leach when pressed too much. Materials to make the bottles are imported from Japan and Europe, including the laser-etched label, but everything else is made here.

Metro Pacific eyes expansion of Cebu airport

by Jeremiah F. de Guzman

Metro Pacific Investments Corp. said it is keen on the P9-billion expansion of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport set for bidding in the first quarter next year.

“We are interested in Cebu [Airport]. Cebu is big enough. There is a ready market for Cebu,” MPIC chairman Manuel Pangilinan told reporters in a recent interview.

He said the company preferred the 300-hectare airport located in Mactan, Cebu over smaller airports also up for bidding under the so-called public-private partnership program of the Aquino government.

“It is probably the second largest airport next to Ninoy Aquino International Airport,” Pangilinan said. “We may not be interested with the smaller ones.”

The Transportation Department said the airport expansion involves two phases for implementation between 2012 and 2015.

The first phase calls for the redevelopment and upgrading of the passenger terminal building and other essential facilities to address international and domestic airline passenger demand, while the second involves the construction of a new cargo terminal.

The department said the bidding is set in the first quarter of 2012 while the awarding of contract is epxected in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Camella eyes 3 Cebu sites

By Katlene O. Cacho
Monday, December 19, 2011

ENCOURAGED by the country’s booming real estate industry, Camella, a subsidiary of Vista Land and Lifescapes Inc. (Vista Land) is set to launch 14 residential projects in new areas across the country in the first quarter of 2012.

Three of these projects will be in new areas in Cebu, a company official disclosed.

Camella Cebu North general manager Myra Lynn Gilig, in an interview over the weekend, said the company’s expansion is motivated by the country’s healthy real estate industry, supported by the growing overseas Filipino market.

Gilig noted 60 percent of the accounts of Camella are those of overseas Filipino workers.

The three new projects in Cebu, she said, are in addition to the company’s existing 33 projects here. She added the company will also be expanding their existing developments such as those located in Talisay City and Barangay Talamban in Cebu City.

Last Saturday, Camella launched four new model townhouse units at The Courtyards in Pasadena, an extension of its Pasadena community in Guadalupe, Cebu City.

The Courtyards in Pasadena will house a total of 24 three-bedroom townhouse units priced at P4.6 million to P7 million.

Interior design consultant Architect Michael Pizarro said the units are ideal for start-up or small families who wish to live in a private community.

“Our focus here is to provide a modern-day living space that is anchored on comfort and privacy,” Pizarro said, adding they have “stepped up” the idea of homes at the Courtyards to catch the attention of the discriminating market.

The house units at the Courtyards use neutral colors to promote laid-back living.

Among the project’s amenities is a swimming pool and community pavilion.

Camella Cebu already sold 40 percent of its units to mostly local buyers living in Cebu or neighboring islands.

Gilig said they are optimistic about the market considering that the project is strategically located, just minutes away from the city center. She added the low interest on home loans now being offered by banks has also helped them attract buyers.

Vista Land reported its sales for the third quarter reached over P6.2 billion, bringing the total sales for the first nine months of the year to P18.3 billion.

Vista Land chief executive officer Manuel Paolo Villar said the company is confident it would meet or even exceed its net income and sales targets for fiscal year 2011 despite market uncertainties.

For the first nine months of the year, Vista Land’s real estate revenues was at P9.9 billion while its net income stood at P2.61 billion. The company earlier said it is targeting about P3.4 billion in earnings and approximately P24 billion in sales for the full year.

“We have had three consecutive quarters of record sales, with the bulk accounted for by our flagship Camella brand. We expect to see continued strong sales performance for our company in the fourth quarter as demand for house and lots, particularly in the mid- to low-end segment of the market, continues to be robust,” said Ricardo Tan, Jr. Vista Land’s chief financial officer.

Aside from the cash assistance, the city government will be transporting immediately to Mindanao the mobile morgue, now stationed at the Cebu International Port, to assist the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in managing the remains of the victims recovered after the flash flood.

-the city will also send volunteer doctors and forensic medical examiners.

-PNP Region 7. “We cannot in conscience celebrate and hold a Christmas party, while thousands of our countrymen in Negros Oriental and Northern Mindanao are suffering in the aftermath of Typhoon Sendong,”. “PRO-7 will not hold its traditional Christmas Party tomorrow (today). Instead, it will donate the money to the victims of Typhoon Sendong,” said Garbo

Blogged: Day 1 of my 6-day Backpacking Trip: Malapascua Island, Cebu (http://www.thetravelingnomad.com/2011/12/year-end-trip-malapascua-island.html)

As the plane started to gain altitude, I looked at the window for a while and took some photos of the clouds before I slept in the remaining duration of my flight. It was rather smooth, thanks to the sunny weather. An hour later, I was awakened by the loud thump of the plane. Touchdown Cebu. I honestly do not know what was in store for us for the next four days, knowing that the places that we were going to visit were at least three and a half hours away from Metro Cebu.

But nonetheless, we remained optimistic in the entire trip, hoping that we will enjoy and have a great time.

Cebu has been blessed with wide ranges of beaches, Spanish fortresses and historical landmarks. On our first day, we drove our way north to Malapascua Island.

When a priest becomes a bishop, he is given an honorary Doctorate in Divinity, that's why there is always a DD appended to their names. This is without regard if he has obtained another doctorate degree after attending graduate school.

Mora'g daghan mang sayop ana p're.

Depende man na kun giunsa pag layout.
Kay gibutangan naman daan ug spare taps sa sulod - planned in advance and projections more than enough to take in additional line applications (lines are already provided in advance).

Another false statement.
When a priest becomes a bishop, he is given an honorary Doctorate in Divinity, that's why there is always a DD appended to their names.
It is not honorary as commonly known rather it is confered like on some Saints..
The Church Canon Law requires in possession of a doctorate or at least a licentiate in sacred scripture, theology, or canon law from an institute of higher studies approved by the Apostolic See

That misinformation should have been resolved.
==========
Please understand the sacredness and responsibility of the office..
The office of bishop traces its origin to the apostles, who were endowed with a special charism by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This special charism has been transmitted through an unbroken succession of bishops by the laying on of hands in the sacrament of Holy Orders.

Cebu prelate, LGUs come to aid of Mindanao flood victims (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/345496/cebu-prelate-lgus-come-aid-mindanao-flood-victims)

CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines (PNA) – Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma is making an urgent apeal to the faithful here to extend any kind of help to the families in Northern Mindanao suffering as a result of flash floods unleashed by tropical storm "Sendong."

The Cebu City government and the Cebu provincial government will also send basic needs and cash aid to the residents of areas most severely hit by the floods, that is, in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and other localities.

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said the provincial government will immediately send basic needs, like bottled water and canned goods.

She thanked businessman Charles Robert Gothong, president of Gothong Southern shipping for offering to ship relief goods to the afflicted areas for free.

Garcia said cash assistance from the province will follow, as soon as the Cebu Provincial Social Welfare Office determines how much to send.

The Cebu city government vowed to give at least P5 million as financial assistance to the flood victims of Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City and Negros Oriental.

With the death toll now estimated at close to 700, ''Sendong'' has been compared with typhoon ''Ondoy'' in 2009, which dumped huge amounts of rain on Metro Manila and killed more than 460 people.

Mayor Michael Rama announced the city’s assistance after he was assured by City Budget Officer Nelfa Briones that the city still has available funds.

The aid will be charged to an P11-million unused portion of the city’s calamity funds.

Rama said the city will also send this week its mobile morgue, through Sulpicio Lines Inc., to help the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan process the hundreds of bodies.

Cebu City Hall had received the mobile morgue from the International Police (Interpol) in 2008, for processing the bodies of those who drowned when the MV Princess of the Stars sank off Romblon during a typhoon.

Rama said he learned from Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano and Iligan City Vice Mayor Henry Dy and that the funeral parlors in both cities can no longer accommodate the bodies.

Cebuanos raise P1.4M cash for flood victims (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/regions/12/20/11/cebuanos-raise-p14m-cash-flood-victims)

CEBU, Philippines – Cebuanos continue to reach out to the victims of tropical storm “Sendong” in Iligan City, Cagayan de Oro City and Negros Oriental.

ABS-CBN Cebu is continually receiving donations for the victims of Sendong. A drop-off point for donations, cash or in kind, was put-up in Fuente Osmeña Circle in Cebu City on Monday.

For the past two days, ABS-CBN Cebu has been able to collect P1.4 million cash donations and P3 million worth of relief goods.

Donations will be shipped to Cagayan de Oro City for the victims in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City on Wednesday night. These are canned goods, bottled water and used clothings.

Volunteers from different organizations and individuals are helping in repacking the relief goods having them ready for shipment. Trans-Asia and Gothong Lines will transport these donations for free.

More relief goods were also shipped to Negros Oriental on Tuesday, dedicated to more than 5,000 families affected in Dumaguete City and other towns.

It will also be distributed on Wednesday to the affected areas.

More drop-off points for donations will be put up in the following days so donors can easily hand over their donations.

Meanwhile, God’s People Catholic Fellowship in Lapu-Lapu City diverted their donations supposedly intended for Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital to the victims of Sendong.

The group yearly gives donations to the said hospital but this year, they have decided to help the victims of the flashfloods.

Different schools and organizations in Cebu are also cancelling their Christmas parties so they can donate their party budgets to the victims of Sendong.

Sacred Heart School Hijas de Jesus and USC-Basic Education donated slippers, jogging pants, and jackets. An unknown donor delivered hundreds of bottled water.

Taxi drivers and jeepney drivers also gave their humble contributions.

It is already the protocol of Cebu Province to assess first the damage prior to giving the amount, but for basic needs, magpadala gud dayon na. CdeO and Iligan badly needs water.

Just so heartwarming the outpouring of help.

naa bai uy... ilaha pa lang gi determine sa province on how much more the province can help..... maybe 10 million worth of goods... like water and some basic essentials... sa relief operations... kay i think ang recovery is now handled by the national government based on the pledge of PNOY himself...

Let us not question what others had given or failed to give... Let us in our own little way contribute for the victims...

SSC Cebu is organizing a Donate and Help the Typhoon Sendong victims... We collect donations in cash and in kind.......

For all forumers who wished to donate please pm, Henz, Slerz, Redjeriedz, Jarenz, Ceboom and other active cebu forumers to pick up your donations...

Its not the bigness or smallness of your donation that counts, its the thought that counts.... Lets help CDO and Iligan typhoon victims....:okay:
Pila ang gihatag sa probinsiya bay? P5M? Sayon ra man na himuong P6M!

Mora'g daghan mang sayop ana p're.

Depende man na kun giunsa pag layout.
Kay gibutangan naman daan ug spare taps sa sulod - planned in advance and projections more than enough to take in additional line applications (lines are already provided in advance).

giluod kos akong paconyo tagbis. hahahahaha

^^^^

When I posted 24kV, I meant the standard distribution voltage. (the standard primary distribution voltage levels include 4.16kV, 7.2kV, 12.47kV, 13.2kV, 14.4kV, 23.9kV, and 34.5kV.) (http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.ee.iastate.edu/~jdm/ee455/notes1_intro.doc&sa=U&ei=go3xTrb3EIK3rAe8lO38Dw&ved=0CCMQFjAG&usg=AFQjCNEAUMYPfYFaSqNzEV9WWzgVjcdK8g).
It could be 23kV or 25kV depending on the setting of the taps.

Di man gyud na madali-dali ug hipos.

Why not sell some lots in the SRP to finance the drainage master plan before Cebuano lives are lost to floods?

Floods ‘highlight need’ for P.5B drainage fund

By Elly T. Bolonos

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/local-news/2011/12/21/floods-highlight-need-p5b-drainage-fund-196865

MAYOR Michael Rama warned that if its drainage system won’t be improved, Cebu City might experience flooding similar to those that struck the Cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

Close to a thousand died in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan when flash floods hit the two cities last week during tropical storm Sendong.

Rama said Cebu City must be prepared in case a calamity similar to what happened in Northern Mindanao occurs.

The mayor expressed disappointment when he learned that the City Council only approved over a hundred million pesos for drainage improvement, instead of the P500-million original proposal.

Still, he said the City Government remains bullish in addressing the drainage problem, which was why he created the multi-sectoral Flood Mitigation and Drainage Task Force.

The task force made the projection that the City needs at least P2.8 billion in 10 years to solve its flooding problem.

Yesterday some of the relief assistance from the Province of Cebu already arrived in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro and Tanjay City in Negros Oriental.

Iligan and Cagayan de Oro each got 1,000 bags of NFA rice, 50 boxes of sardines, 1,500 packs of bottled water, 20 boxes of assorted medicines and a drum of chlorine.

For the cities of Dumaguete and Tanjay, each also got 500 bags of NFA rice, 50 boxes of sardines, 20 boxes of noodles and 125 boxes of bottled water.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office administrative staff Wilson Ramos said the rest of the 80,000 bottles of water were shipped last night and is expected to arrive in the area today.

CH defers demolition of 58 houses in Tejero (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=760501&publicationSubCategoryId=107)

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has approved to stay the scheduled demolition of the 58 houses along Uldarico Street in Barangay Tejero until after Sinulog.

But the members of the barangay council of Tejero are requesting Rama to defer the demolition until a relocation site is available for the affected families.

City Hall’s Squatters Prevention Encroachment Elimination Division chief Noel Artes earlier gave the 58 households 10 days from December 7 to vacate their premises. SPEED personnel were supposed to start the demolition already after the ultimatum has expired but the barangay officials interceded in behalf of the residents.

The barangay officials led by acting barangay captain Garry Lao convinced Rama to give the residents until after Sinulog.

“While the barangay support the decision of the mayor to undertake a road restoration project in Uldarico Alviola Street to improve the accessibility of the interior portion of the affected area and ensure proper passageways in case of emergency situations, but the city government must identify clearly which of these houses will be partially and to be completely demolished,” the barangay officials said.

According to the barangay officials, SPEED personnel and that of the Division for the Welfare of Urban Poor (DWUP) must conduct another follow up consultation with the affected families for a smooth project implementation.

They also reiterated their opposition to the 10-meter road expansion.

It was Rama who suggested to restore the 10-meter road to give easy access for emergency vehicles like fire trucks.– (FREEMAN)

After naming Cebu as RP’s volleyball capital, PVF eyes Cebu to host SEA volleyball next year

By Iste S. Leopoldo
Wednesday, December 21, 2011

INSTEAD of spending millions to send the Philippine volleyball teams to competitions abroad, the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) thinks it is better to invite teams over in a gathering of the top teams of Southeas Asia.

PVF president Gener Dungo disclosed this during last weekend’s final of the 7th Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Dungo said he had an initial discussion about it with Gov. Garcia, who already gave her verbal support for the plan.

“Instead of spending around P1.5 million to send the players abroad to participate in major volleyball tournament, why don’t we host it?” said Dungo.

The PVF sends the national teams to competitions abroad as part of their preparation for tournaments like the Southeast Asian Games.

“Instead of our teams going abroad, it would be better to bring Southeast Asia’s best volleyball teams to the Philippines,” Dungo said.

Dungo added hosting this competition, where they plan to invite Southeast Asia powerhouse Thailand, is a good practice as the Philippines is also awaiting the final word from the international governing body FIVB to host the FIVB Grand Prix Women’s Championship either in 2012 or 2013.

Cebu is also one of the venues being considered for the competition.

Cebuano choir shines in national choral scene
By Nathalie Tomada (The Philippine Star) Updated December 22, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Visayas Chorale (UVC) topped the recently-held 2011 MBC Paskong Pinoy national choral competition at the Aliw Theater, bringing its Cebuano-stamped musicality and showmanship to the national choral stage.

It was a sweet and stunning comeback for the 30-member UVC, conducted by Anna Piquero, which first emerged champion in 2009 during its first try in the annual tilt celebrating the country’s rich choral tradition.

After hurdling the regional elimination round held in Cebu and the semi-final round here in Manila, the choir bested seven other finalists in the open category before an elite jury made up of choral music experts Jonathan Velasco, Prof. Fidel Calalang Jr., Arnel de Pano, Ma. Lourdes Hermo, Janet Sabas-Aracama and Nanette Inventor. The choir won a total cash prize of P200,000.

Last year’s champion, the St. Louis University of Baguio, placed second. Koro Ilustrado of Metro Manila, also conducted by Piquero, and the Colegio de San Agustin Choir of Iloilo landed third.

According to De Pano, the win is a reaffirmation of what is already known among choral music enthusiasts: That UVC is considered as one of the country’s best choirs.

De Pano, who has sat as judge of the MBC competition since its inception five years ago, said the competition has gotten tougher each year, as the crop of contestants has been stepping up the plate, infusing more gimmicks. Contrary to common perception perhaps, choirs have increasingly incorporated movement on stage, thus are more colorful and truly a delight to watch. This is not actually confined to Pinoy choirs but also extends to choirs worldwide, a trend only picked up (not originated by) and perpetuated by the likes of popular American TV series on show choirs, Glee.

And the MBC tilt does give more weight to the entertainment value as the songs should foremost appeal to the listening public, as compared to other choral contests that are more academic, classical and technical in nature. But he said that just because the performance is entertaining and fun to watch, it doesn’t mean it isn’t technically sound, referring to the performance of the UV Chorale which delivered its numbers with well-thought-out choreography, youthful exuberance and a clean sound.

In addition to its participation in the competition, early this month, the UVC was also featured at the Yuletide Evenings in Glorietta, Madz Et. Al at Philam Theater and performed at the Asian Institute of Liturgy and Music. It also joined the 1,000 voices concert of Maestro Ryan Cayabyab at the Big Dome last month.

The UV Chorale was created to give full scholarships to vocally gifted students. When it was founded, its simple intention was to sing in church masses. But since it started being trained by Piquero, an award-winning choirmaster and former Philippine Madrigal singer, in 2007, it has pioneered Cebuano choirs competing here and abroad.

Among its past awards were winning the first CCP Choral Competition in 2009, first runner-up finish at the Busan Competition in 2007 and the gold prize at the Tomohon International Choral Competition in Indonesia. Editorial: DENR’s geohazard map

Thursday, December 22, 2011

TYPHOON Sendong and the damage it wrought on Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and some parts of Negros Oriental may have vindicated the Department of Natural Resources (DENR) and its Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB). Months before Sendong struck, DENR and MGB officials already made noise about its geohazard mapping project.

The geohazard map identifies flood-prone and landslide-prone areas in the country. “It shows which areas have high chances of soil erosion and which areas are low-lying and flood-prone,” DENR Secretary Ramon Paje said in a press conference held in September this year.

The identification of disaster-prone areas in the country has been in the works since 2006 but gained urgency in the aftermath of typhoon Ondoy last year. That storm brought about deadly flooding in some parts of Metro Manila and Luzon.

With the map, local government units (LGUs) can no longer seek an excuse in ignorance for not acting on the problem before tragedy like the one that hit Cagayan de Oro strikes. To illustrate, the geohazard map considers five barangays in Cebu City as susceptible to flooding. They are Mabolo, Kasambagan, Kinasang-an, Labangon and Bonbon.

Maps, however, only gain value when used. This was why DENR made sure to furnish LGUs with copies of the geohazard map and posted it in the MGB website for easier reference. Paje was so optimistic about the map’s usefulness that he expressed the belief that what would follow would be the LGUs relocating residents living on disaster hotspots.

Airport study for Bogo, Medellin towns pushed
By Carmel Loise Matus
Cebu Daily News

The Cebu Provincial Board is asking the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to conduct a feasibility study for an airport in Bogo City or Medellin town in northern Cebu.
The proposal of PB Member Joven Mondigo was approved in last Monday’s out-of-town PB session in Medellin.
Mondigo said it was Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan, president and CEO of World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Philippines, who suggested building an airport in less-developed parts of Cebu and opposed the idea of relocating the Mactan Cebu International Airport to Cordova town as costly and harmful to the environment because it involved reclaiming foreshore lands.
“Mr. Tan recommended instead that a second airport be constructed at either Bogo City or the town of Medellin since they have vast tracts of wide plains.
Building the airport in the less-developed northern part of Cebu would encourage economic activities outside of existing and crowded urban centers,” the resolution states.
In yesterday’s 888 News Forum, Cebu 1st District Rep. Eduardo Gullas suggested that the feasibility study should also include southern Cebu.
“Any developments in the south surely gets my support and complete commitment,” he said.
But while these are still plans, Gullas said the existing Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) should still be used.
He said creating a new airport doesn’t have to mean closing the existing one.
“All around it (existing airport) is in an export-oriented area…Why can we not continue using that? And then if a new airport would really be needed, just like in Hong Kong, the old airport was not changed. When the time came they needed a new airport, they had the island leveled, so the airport of Hong Kong is now the best in the world,” he said.
Gullas also said that the airport needed a second runway.
Former MCIA board member Dawnie Roa, in the same forum, said there was enough room for a second runway as MCIA owns the land in the periphery including MEPZ 1 and MEPZ 2.
Rep. Pablo John Garcia of Cebu’s 3rd district reiterated his stand that as long as the airport is being used by everyone, the MCIAA has no authority to sell the airport.

Chamber officials optimistic of getting Chile investments
By Aileen Garcia-Yap
Cebu Daily News

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) officials see a big potential for investment partnerships between local and Chile businessmen after they signed a chamber sisterhood agreement with the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Chile this month.
CCCI president Samuel Chioson and trade mission committee chairperson Melanie Ng said their counterparts in various fields and industries in Chile had shown interest in investing in Cebu.
A group of businessmen from Chile will ebe coming to Cebu next year to meet their local counterparts especially those in the real estate industry.
Ng said they found out during the business matching event in their Chile visit that businessmen there wanted to sell their products to the Philippines.
The products include wines, pet food, real estate, machineries especially in food processing and bakery equipment, mining, dairy products and more that are related to the food industry.
“From Cebu, they are also interested at our furniture, gifts and dried and processed fruits. So we see a lot of potential with that trade mission despite us being hesitant at first knowing they are very far and there might be problems with logistics,” said Ng.
With a potential market in South America, Chioson said they were confident that they could still help open other untapped markets in the world to help Cebu’s major industries cope with the effects of the economic turmoil in Europe and the United States of America.
“We see this as a two-way process that will benefit both countries. We being in Asia is where economic development and growth is expected to come in the coming years, and them being a new market for our local traders,” said Chioson.
Members of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Chile are also now organizing a trip to Cebu in 2012 for the Cebu Design Summit and again in 2013 to attend the Confederation of Asia Pacific Chamber of Commerce and Industry Conference where they will again hold more business matchings in Cebu.
Chioson said they would continue to build links and open new markets through more trade missions next year.
“Our target next year will be Eastern Europe. And like what we did with Chile, Brazil and Argentina, we would like to establish connections with our counterparts there,” said Chioson.

Cebu City sends volunteer doctors, forensic medical examiners to Mindanao
By MARS W. MOSQUEDA JR.
December 21, 2011, 4:20pm

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Cebu City Government is ready to send its mobile morgues to Mindanao to assist in managing the remains of the victims recovered after the flash flood in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he will send the mobile morgue to Mindanao after learning from government officials of Cagayan and Iligan that the major problem of the said areas now is how to deal with the dead.

The mobile morgue, Rama said, will be used to help in the identification process of the victims that will be pulled out from the rubble and dirt as the city will also be sending volunteer doctors and forensic medical examiners.

The said mobile morgue was set up by the International Police during the height of the identification process of the victims of the ill-fated MV Princess of the Stars. It is in the mobile morgue that experts take out DNA samples and other identifiable marks from the victims' bodies to match them with the DNA samples of their relatives.

The mobile morgue is similar to what authorities used in identifying tsunami victims in Phuket, Thailand. It can be converted into a mobile clinic, mobile infirmary, mobile dental clinic, mobile office, mobile canteen, or a mobile storage space.

“As we had experienced before during the Princess of the Stars incident, we know that the smell of the dead bodies in due time will be beyond anybody can imagine. So we will help them,” Rama said.

Rama said the morgue will be deployed once the Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corp., which volunteered to ship the facility to Mindanao, is ready to do so.

For flood-hit areas: City dads okay P6M assistance (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=761018&publicationSubCategoryId=107)

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government is giving P6 million to three local government units badly affected by flooding last week.

This as the city council yesterday authorized Mayor Michael Rama to grant financial assistance for the flood victims in Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City, and the Province of Negros Oriental during a special session.

Officials of Cebu Province led by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia also announced plans to visit the flood-hit areas next week to personally hand their assistance.

Rama had recommended an assistance of P5 million from the excess calamity funds of the city to be given to the areas affected by the floods. Despite the recent bickering between him and the council, the legislators decided to give an additional P1 million assistance.

Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young, presiding officer of the council, said P3 million will be given to Cagayan de Oro City, P2 million to Iligan City, and P1 million to Negros Oriental.

The city will be also spending P500,000 for the purchase of 100 caskets to be delivered to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan to help ease the shortage as around 1,000 have already been declared dead while hundreds still remain missing.

Councilor Jose Daluz III who sponsored the resolution, upon the request of Rama, said “In the spirit of Christian generosity to help ease the plight of the victims, the Cebu City government is responding immediately to extend assistance to the plagued cities.”

The amount will be taken from the city’s calamity funds.

Budget officer Nelfa Briones said that the city still has P11.5 million remaining from its calamity funds.

Gwen to visit Mindanao

Governor Garcia and some mayors will be visiting the flood-stricken cities after Christmas to personally bring their assistance.

Garcia said they will bring heavy equipment and personnel to help in the clearing operations.

The Province of Cebu will give P5 million each of the local governments of Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City and P1 million each of Dumaguete City and Tanjay City in Negros Oriental.

“Ako mismo moadto didto sa paghatud sa atong financial assistance usab nga gikan sa province, kuyugan pud ko sa mga mayor nga gusto gyud sad sila mokuyog para mohatag sad sila directly sa ilang financial assistance from each of their towns and cities,” Garcia told reporters yesterday.

Garcia said that some mayors will be giving part of their unused calamity funds to affected LGUs.

Asturias Mayor Allan Adlawan promised to give P100,000 to each of the affected LGUs.

Liloan Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco also announced to give P200,000 for Cagayan de Oro City.

Frasco’s announcement was made during the “Liloanong Pasko sa Kabataan” when more than 600 day care children received gifts from his wife, Christina, who celebrated her birthday yesterday.

During the occasion, Frasco asked all municipal employees to donate at least one item of used clothing for the typhoon victims.

The Province of Cebu has already sent 100,000 bottles of water; 3,000 sacks of rice; blankets, canned goods, sardines, noodles and assorted medicine to Iligan and Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao and the cities of Dumaguete and Tanjay in Negros Oriental.

Garcia said that the Province already paid P2.1 million to the National Food Authority for the rice.

Iligan and Cagayan de Oro each got 1,000 bags of NFA rice, 50 cartoons of sardines, 1,500 packs of bottled water, 20 boxes of assorted medicine, and a drum of chlorine.

The cities of Dumaguete and Tanjay, each also got 500 bags of NFA rice, 50 cartoons of sardines, 20 boxes of noodles, and 125 boxes of bottled water.

Two dump trucks are already in Iligan City to deliver the goods earlier shipped from Cebu.

Garcia is calling the Cebu contractors and the private sector if they could also lend their heavy equipment.

NAVFORCEN Also Helps

Aside from its naval rescue operations, the Naval Force Central (NAVFORCEN) yesterday delivered cadaver bags to Cagayan De Oro and Iligan.

NAVFORCEN chief, Commodore Zyril Carlos said they the bags, which will arrive at the typhoon-stricken cities tonight, are what the cities needed the most.

Immediately after learning about the tragedy, Carlos said they dispatched a team of special warfare personnel with rubber boats to the area.

The team helped in the recovery of bodies as well as in the rescue of the survivors. Their ship is also the first to arrive in Cagayan for the rescue, he said.

“Even though the cities are no longer part of our jurisdiction, we feel there’s no really boundary in the middle of the sea. So helping out tayo,” Carlos said. — with Gregg Rubio and Niña G. Sumacot/NLQ (FREEMAN)

On the news today.... Total donations by the Cebu Province and pooled resources of Cebu's municipalities and cities reaches P/ 26.5M... More mayors of the province will soon be contributing...... I am not sure if the Cebu City's P/6M cash donations is also included in this figure..
Initially, the province will be giving P/ 5M each to the cities of Iligan and CDO, and P/1M each for Dumaguete, Tanjay and another one municipality in Neg Oriental..Cebu Province and Municipalities will also be lending the Heavy Equipments to the respective LGU's for their use in the clean up.

This doesnt count the various donations of goods worth P/3M by the Cebu Province... and the donations of every Cebuanos from all walks of life through various NGO's and organizations spearheading relief operations..

I am really proud of being Cebuano... Cebu as its best!!!

If you're referring to the posts in Negros thread. I've read them and so far, the people there were the ones posting such compliments/praise to what Cebu had helped.

Igo raman sad ta naga-post og updates. I don't know sa CDO threads but as what I've read so far wala man nanghambog ang mga Cebuanos didto. (I'm checking it gain now).

Basta we will continue to show them that we are helping, mao man sad na'y atong giingon didto sa thread nila nga to make it clear, we are helping and they are not alone, the reason nga nag sige sa'g post ang mga fellow SSC forumers sa other cities sa ebidensya nga naa sad inwn gitabang ang nagkalain laing syudad ngadto kanila kay gi huna huna na nila nga they're left alone helpless specially katong wala pa'y kurente last Saturday nga sige'g text atong fellow CDO forumers nga nag kinahanglan gyud silag tabang pero ngano daw murag wa'y tabang naabot specially that the National Government na ang nag una una to let them feel that they're alone labi na atong pinalanggang presidente nga gi samotan pa gyud og pa feel nila nga the Philippines don't care sa ilang kalisod tungod atong party party ni P'Noy. Awa ra gud sa Negros thread, wa'y ni post didto sa ilang thread nga naa'y nitabang nila, unsa man ilang gi huna huna, pag tuo nila nga gi neglect sila the reason I posted that picture sa Fuente about sa relief operation for Negros.
So kung naa man gani news article about sa relief operation, you can post it there. That's the way we show to them nga at this time of the season, they're still a big deal for us here in Cebu and other cities in the country. Wala nato sila gi bale wala kay help is still pouring.
No malice kaayo mi anang butanga ron nga wa mi nag huna huna anang palabwanay at this time kay lain kaayong paminawn, naa rasad na sa uban kung unsay huna huna nila.

OT: kinsa tong ganahan pa mo hatag og donations (cash or kind), pm or text us lang kay whole day mi ron ma mang pick up. Thanks and God Bless!

Amazing UVC Chorale.

Comparative peformance in spirit of the Christmas.

HALLELUJAH CHORUS - UV CHORALE, USPF CHORALE AND LA COMPARZA
CONDUCTED BY : MR. DENNIS SUGAROL
ORGAN BY : MR. ALEJANDRO CONSOLACION
Listen to Cebuana sopranos..their energy and highs
considering the microphone was downstairs..it clipped!!!!
...the rest of the voices too.
The Organ took care of the orchestra ...BRAVO
It is a commerical CD quality (Hogwood).

Handel - Messiah - Hallelujah Chorus..From Andre Rieu's Live 1.8milion views.
It is a terrible singing of Handel's Messiah...a Pop? No solemnity!
The sopranos..... each one is singing solo.

Congratulations to UVC.. the conductor at the contest ..must be good too.

Exactly... mao jud na among na feel... mao nga nag hallelujah me pagka kita sa picture nga gi post, na feel namo nga we're not alone .... na feel jud bitaw na mo nga wala ra me gi tagad.. it is maybe because gamay ra nga mga casualties compared to Iligan and CDO.... pero kung imong tan-awon ang damages parehas lang... good thing lang nga naabot si Sendong sa Negros Oriental Morning na......

Anyways, many thanks to all our fellow Cebuanos..... Thank you for extending your arms to all of us here.......
