DOT planning ‘great Cebu sale’

TO DRAW in new markets to Cebu, the Department of Tourism (DOT) plans to entice travelers from neighboring countries to visit and shop in Cebu with a grand sale among local retailers.

DOT 7 Director Rowena Montecillo told Sun.Star Cebu that she plans to approach members of the Philippine Retailers Association to discuss plans to hold a grand sale in September, in celebration of tourism month.

Can't get enough of Sinulog? Watch the winning performances.

Unlike regular mall-wide sales, Montecillo said they want to make this an annual event to keep visitors coming and offer them something to look forward to every year. She added that September is also the start of the country’s peak season for travelers.

Nope. Ang Cebu Green Island Club Resort kay naa sa mainland ug basing sa picture kanang nisiwil sa left side sa Barangay Banhigan. Ang Moalboal kay kanang naa sab sa right side. Beautiful coral reef surround the island except the side facing the town proper kay nahurot sa dynamite fishing. Kon tua ka sa Zaragosa Island ang bukid sa Badian kay mura ug ngipon sa gabas tan-awon.

Correct. Ang lumad taga Badian kay ang tawag ana "Pulo". (meaning, island)

I'm really happy nga ang taga lumad basakanon ang nakadaug. Kay her skin color is representative of the color of the original dancers of sinulog. ang mga kanhing mga cebuano. plus, if we're going to choose a new face of sinulog, she's perfect kay dili conventional ang iyang beauty. dili pud kaayo foreign. i think she's the best face of sinulog yet.

btw, i read somewhere that the original (native) name of queen juana is Humamai.

Humamai was the wife of King Humabon of Cebu. When Ferdinand Magellan landed in Cebu, the queen embraced Christianity. Humamai was the first Filipina, Cebuana at that, who became a Christian in the entire Philippine Archipelago, and most probably the first native woman in the Far East who became a catholic.

IMO, Legaspi has nothing to add premium to our knowledge about Raha Humabon and Hara Amihan. He just came later during the time of Rajah Tupas.

We only have Pigafetta's story, another one from one of Sebastian del Cano's pilot, Francisco Albo, and the report done by a Maximilianus Transylvanus, who interviewed all the sailors when what was left of the original Magellan's crew returned to Spain in 1523.

i couldn't say whether or not legaspi had a hand in our present understanding of our very own history. after all, like everyone else here, i am but a receiver of nth-hand information. i guess we all just turn to history books written and re-written by people with various motives and ideologies. in the end, no one is still certain what the real facts are. i guess only humabon, pigafetta, and humamai/amihan know for sure. hehe

kung naa lang gyud siguro'y nakasuwat sa atong kasaysayan no? kana bang "scribe" gyud sa rajah unya pagkamatay ba ron niya kay iyang gipasa iyang katungdanan sa iyang anak na maoy magpadayon sa iyang trabaho isip scribe para dili ta magagad sa mga gipangsuwat nilang Pigafetta ug uban pa bahin sa atong kasaysayan.

CEBU Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia allocated P39.8 million this year for the Public Information Office (PIO), which produces the Capitol’s TV show and newsletter.

The Office of the Governor’s budget for this year is P835.9 million, which is also used to fund the PIO’s programs and activities.

Sugbo News, the official publication of the Provincial Government, is allotted P24.2 million or nearly 62 percent of the PIO’s 2012 budget. The newsletter is published twice a month or 24 issues in a year in full color.

It features programs and activities of the Capitol. Copies are distributed for free to different local government units (LGUs) in the province.

Sugbo TV’s budget for this year, on the other hand, is P14.3 million or more than 36 percent of the PIO’s annual appropriation.

The PIO is expected to produce 652 episodes of Sugbo TV for the entire year.

The governor said Sugbo TV will go national this year.

Eleven cable television operators signed yesterday a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Capitol so they can air Sugbo TV 24 hours a day every day in at least one channel.

No cost

The governor said this will be done at no cost to the Province.

Sugbo TV is also aired in Zamboanga del Norte and Negros Occidental.

The governor’s office also allotted P15 million this for the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo and other cultural and arts development programs.

The governor plans to continue Sugbo TV, Sugbo News and the cultural festival Pasigarbo sa Sugbo until her term ends in 2013.

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), in partnership with the Cebu City government, is going to push through with the proposed tourism support facility project, the Hop-On/Hop-off Bus Tours.

CCCI chairman for external affairs Nestor Archival said that a business plan for this project is now being crafted, in order to see the feasibility of providing such service to growing tourists in Cebu.

Archival, who is also one of the consultants to the Cebu City government, said that CCCI will give technical expertise in terms of business potential, feasibility, and management approach, but the Cebu City government will be the one to implement this.

This kind of facility is also known as Loop Tours, to provide a quick and convenient way to get an overview of the city.

“We are excited about this project because it will be the first of its kind in the country. Now, tourists and even locals who wish to take affordable trips to popular tourism attractions in Cebu can simple ride on the bus at specified drop points within Cebu City,” said Milagros Espina Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) tourism committee chairperson told a press briefing.

According to Espina, this is going to re-invent Cebu’s tourism industry, as it is maturing as a destination.

Tours are frequently used by visitors on their first day or two in a new city as it quickly gives them an overview of how the area is laid out, while a tour guide provides a history and interesting facts of the city.

After seeing most of the major sites via the hop-on/hop-off bus, they can then determine an itinerary for the rest of their stay, deciding which area of the city they want to visit again on their own and which sites they would like to see in more details.

Cebu airport confirmed as BIMP-EAGA 'drop-off point'

THE Philippines' Mactan Cebu International Airport has recently been confirmed as one of the "drop-off points" for the air route in the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), the country's coordinating office for the sub-regional growth area announced in a statement yesterday.

The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) said this development came during a BIMP-EAGA strategic planning meeting held recently in Manila.

"Under the proposed Protocol Amendment to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the governments of the four countries on expansion of air linkages, Cebu was designated as one point outside of BIMP-EAGA under the cargo and passenger co-terminalisation, with own stop-over rights. The amended MOU is expected to be signed by July 2012," the media statement said.

The election of the Cebu airport meant that airlines planning to open new routes to the Philippines, such as a Kota Kinabalu-Davao route, can drop off passengers and cargo in Cebu before heading to Davao.

"As it flies back to Kota-Kinabalu it can again drop by Cebu to pick up Malaysian-bound passengers and cargo," the statement proposed.

Meanwhile, Malaysia and Indonesia has identified their respective cities of Johor Bahru and Solo to be co-terminalisation traffic points.

"The implementation of co-terminalisation scheme is also being pushed as a viable solution for those routes having large geographical areas. The proposed policy operates around the premise that more traffic can be generated on a region to region basis," the statement said.

MinDA Chair Luwalhati Antonino was quoted as saying that the expansion of its air linkages with the sub-region was hoped to boost economic activity in Mindanao and Palawan, "as the transport of people and goods with our regional neighbours will become much easier".

"The proposed air link expansion is one of the flexible approaches of the BIMP-EAGA Transport, Infrastructure, ICT Development (TIICTD) Cluster to have more sustainable air services on existing routes and new sub-regional air connections," the statement said.

Towards this aim, the Philippines has offered to host an airlines summit within this year, to bring airlines and industry stakeholders under one roof and discuss further ways to boost airline operations in BIMP-EAGA.

Established in 1994, the ASEAN sub-regional grouping of the four countries aims to increase trade, investments and tourism in the sub-region.The Brunei Times

TO DRAW in new markets to Cebu, the Department of Tourism (DOT) plans to entice travelers from neighboring countries to visit and shop in Cebu with a grand sale among local retailers.

DOT 7 Director Rowena Montecillo told Sun.Star Cebu that she plans to approach members of the Philippine Retailers Association to discuss plans to hold a grand sale in September, in celebration of tourism month.

Unlike regular mall-wide sales, Montecillo said they want to make this an annual event to keep visitors coming and offer them something to look forward to every year. She added that September is also the start of the country’s peak season for travelers.

Big discounts

She said the concept is similar to the Great Singapore Sale, which Singapore holds each July. Many tourists book their trips between July and August to take advantage of big discounts from major retailers while also checking out tourist sites.

While malls regularly schedule their own sales with their retailers, Montecillo said they will request that all establishments will hold their sales simultaneously and give big discounts for the sale.

Should they succeed, Montecillo said visitors can look forward to booking trips to Cebu every September.

Encouraging

PRA-Cebu chapter chairman Jay Aldeguer said he was happy to hear the DOT 7 is coming up with new ways to bring in more tourists.

“The fact that the regional DOT is thinking of new ways to draw in more people to Cebu is encouraging.”

Aldeguer said September is also a very good time to hold a sale because it is a lean month for retailers.

He said that if sales are held during peak seasons, when customers come in droves, retailers will not want to mark down their prices because shoppers will spend anyway.
He is confident that retailers will be happy to cooperate with the DOT in this undertaking.

Montecillo is also looking forward to having a Cebu sales mission with the tourism private sector this April, targeting visitors from Singapore and Malaysia.

She said a good many Singaporeans and Malaysians have traveled to Cebu, with flights being offered direct to their key airports.

“They are spending on travel. Since they are very near the Philippines, why can’t we invite them?” she said, adding that the three to four-hour flights to Cebu are shorter than air travel to other destinations in the southeast Asian region.

I never slept the whole time I was in the bus. It's always like that for me. Matulog na ko nig dapit nas MInganilla or Talisay hahaha.

This vacation, I went up farthest to Tabogon via habal habal on a late afternoon and I was again struck by how quaint and beautiful our northern town scenes were. It didn't help that the breeze was so fresh, and the late afternoon light bathed the scenes with that extra golden and glorious aura! Nikuyog baboy ra kos akong duha ka amiga kay magprenup sila sa kuya sa usa nila, and we went to an unknown resort along the rock-cliff shores of Tabogon kay puros na man diay beach house sa mga dato na diha. Kanindot na man sa tubig ug wala gyud mi kaantos nangaligo mi nga nagbra ug panty ra sila, unya ako kay nagbrip ra (laylay pa gyud!! Hahaha). Mao gyud ang akong dream location para sa akong dream house didto dapita. Kanang pangpang, unya dagat, unya you have the Visayan Sea 180 degrees!

I'll post pics later sa lugar! (Wala lay labot ang mga laylay nga panty og brip haha).

And going south to Oslob, I thought, wow bisan kapila na ko kaagi padung didto, mura man ko ug first timer because I was wide awake and taking all the charm of the southern trail in. In the corniest corner of my heart I was shouting silently, "Man, I LOOOOVE CEBU!". Hahaha.

The Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc. (CCBPI) has invested in a third bottling line in their Mandaue City manufacturing plant.
“We remain confident with Cebu. That is why we have made our plant here our center for expansion in the region,” said Bill Schultz, CCBPI president and chief executive officer.
The bottling line is part of the expansion projects funded by a $1-billion budget for investments in the country.
Schultz said is a major market of Coca-Cola.
“There’s tremendous opportunity here because we chose Cebu for our expansion. This is the heart of our business here in the country. We have about 370 associates here and roughly about 40,000 retailers that we do business with,” said Schultz.
The new investment is also seen to generate employment opportunities in the area according to Schultz.

FATE OF CARCAR, NAGA'S TREES IN CEBU UP TO DENR.

CEBU CITY -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will determine whether the trees along both sides of the highway from Naga City to Carcar City can be cut so the road can be widened.

Representative Eduardo R. Gullas (Cebu Province, 1st district) said the P27 million he requested has been released by the National Government, so the road widening can start this year.

“We have a problem of how to expand the road without destroying the trees. I will be amenable if the trees will be left in the middle of the expanded road. However, I will abide by the decision of DENR,” Gullas said.

The DENR is supposed to decide whether or not to issue a permit to cut trees, governed by laws on heritage conservation and the protection of trees.

Cebu Environment and Natural Resources Office Forester Filemon Embalzado said the agency conducted an inventory of trees, in relation to the request of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for road widening projects.

Pruning

Embalzado said the request was not to cut down trees, but to prune trees that may be hazardous to motorists.

Gullas said the expansion of the road is also in connection with his bypass road project in Carcar City, from Barangays Awayan to Bunavista and Valencia, down to the park near the cemetery, then to the road leading to the Municipality of Sibonga.

He said he requested P50 million four times in 2011, but only P38 million was approved.

The congressman explained that the road he wants to open will bypass the main artery going to Southern Cebu, the area from the bridge of the Carcar river to the Carcar rotunda where the old houses are located.

Gullas said they need a bypass road to protect the heritage houses, which will be damaged if large trucks keep passing by the area.

The bypass road will also cross the Carcar-Barili-Dumanjug road. This road was improved by the government through funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Bypass road

On the other hand, Gullas said the Carcar City Government, through Mayor Nicepuro Apura and Vice Mayor Patrick Barcenas, will open a coastal road that will connect both ends of the bypass road. This will pass by Barangays Tuyom, Valladolid and Perrelos, for a circumferential road.

Once both the bypass road and the coastal road are realized, Gullas said Carcar City will have an expanded area for economic improvement.

Besides, there will be alternate roads that will decongest the main artery during fiesta celebrations and other public activities.

But before work can proceed, DENR will first have to decide what to do about the trees.

Embalzado said the clearance to cut trees would have to be from Manila, and DPWH-Central Visayas has to ask for cutting permits from the DENR Central Office.

There are three issues that have to be addressed before any action can be taken or a permit can be issued.

Embalzado said 100-year-old acacia trees are protected by the National Heritage Institute.

Cutting such trees is regulated under Presidential Proclamation 953. (EOB/BAP of Sun.Star Cebu)

I saw this small cave with a lagoon along the marigondon road just last year, sa kadugay pa naman nakog agi agi anang dalana.. i was so amazed that this cave was hidden to me for so many years...its awesome to see features like this just beside a highway... I hope Lapu-lapu would think of protecting this kay murag ang squatters nagpaduol na pod sa cave hapit... maybe create a pocket park around the cave to have a differently serene place where local marigondons can relax and hangout and maybe swim, since its crystal clear lagoon, and an additional attraction for passersby and exploring tourists staying at the hotels and resort in mactan.. pohon if mapreserve it is definitively like an exciting oasis in the middle of a populated and buzzling resort city of lapulapu... mao nay ganahan kayo sa mga tourists, surprises bah, sites that they cant find in a travel guide book and they just discover it on their trip... pareho atong naa koy nakit-an movie nga just along their road trip, mohunong lang kadali kay naay nakit-an nga lagoon nga pwede sila kaswim and to cool off sa kainit sa panahon... hehehe kung tarong palang untag utok nang mayor radaza diha sa lapulapu, kadaghan naman lang untag nindot nga natural features ning mactan!!! haaay ako ray maworry sa future nga panagway aning opon if magpadayon ning kalaki aning mga radaza!!!:bash:

Cebu City faces multiple climate change threats – WWF-BPI study

Only 21 of the many storms that hit the country from 1990 to 2010 affected Cebu City and more than half of those came in November and December, but other climate change effects threaten the Philippines' second-largest business capital and among them are landslides, flooding, saltwater intrusion, and sea level rise, according to a recently released study.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) – Philippines and the Bank of the Philippine Islands took a close look at the climate factors that influence life in Cebu City and three other cities.

Their study noted that while ”the city reports that it sits 18 meters above sea level (ASL), several districts of the old city are barely 1 to 2 meters ASL. This includes the neighboring island of Mactan where the province’s only commercial airport is located.”

“Saltwater intrusion, due to excessive groundwater extraction, has long been a problem here. Relatively recent studies indicate that saltwater intrusion has been reported 5 kilometers inshore,” the climate change study added.

Zoning violations put people at risk

WWF Philippines and BPI also learned that non-compliance with land use standards allow the building of homes in areas where there should be none.

“Only 28 % of Cebu City’s land area falls within the range acceptable for human settlement or cultivation. It is a matter of concern, therefore, that about 64% of city lands are classified by the national government as alienable and disposable,” the study said.

One-fourth of Cebu City’s barangays have a “high threat” level for landslides while another 16 percent of the villages face moderate landslide risk.

“Flooding is a high threat for 6 barangays and a moderate threat for 18 barangays of Cebu City. This represents 8% and 22% of all barangays, respectively,” the study also said.

WWF Philippines and BPI also point out that “23 of the city’s 80 barangays are totally or partially located in four watershed areas” and some of them are located within “critical watersheds and other protected areas of the city, such as the Central Cebu Protected Landscape (CCPL).”

The study warned of business disruption because “it is already evident that Cebu City’s climate patterns indicate high inter-annual variability, with extreme weather events at both ends of the wet-dry spectrum.”

It challenged Cebu city’s leaders and communities to invest in “climate smart infrastructure and technology” and to rethink its development priorities lest it be “caught in a ‘climate sandwich’ as saltwater intrusion advances further, sea levels rise and more intense typhoons lash the coastline with storm surge." — GMA News

that is the best part of asturias highway coz its cool and breezy due to its tree lined theme and its a straight path.This area is the former atlas prawn farm complex,(AFC Prawn farms division).

buswang lake is another treasure in cebu that needs protection in order to maintain its natural beauty. Its a freshwater that has a spring as its source on the bank of this lake.

Mga gAgmay ra nga debugsay bai Kay dili man tugtan ang mga motorized banca sa duol. Mga 3 ka taw per sakayan ang max. Pero wala may problema Kung bulag2x mo ug sakayan Kay duol ra man pod kaayo mo sa inyo kagrupo.

Firm eyes resort in Mactan

FEDERAL Land Inc., the property development arm of the Metrobank Group, is interested to develop a resort facility in Mactan through a joint venture to complement its business hotel, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu.

Officials said the company is currently in talks with two Cebuano families for prospective locations in Mactan.

“We are still on the exploratory stage. Apart from seeing growth in our apartment building and hotel, we are open to opportunities of building a resort facility here,” Metrobank chairman and group vice chairman Antonio Abacan Jr. said in an interview on Saturday.

Abacan said the development of the resort hotel will complement Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, whose core market is the corporate segment. He said they want to tap Cebu’s growing leisure market.

“There are two properties being offered. One is a 12-hectare property,” he said.

Abacan, however, declined to disclose more details of the negotiations.

Federal Land, which operates Marco Polo Hotel in Cebu, diversified its portfolio to include development of condominiums.

According to its website, the firm launched the P5-billion high rise project ‘’The Residences’’ in Nivel Hills. The Residences is the first of the five-tower residential project beside Marco Polo Plaza Cebu.

Metrobank vice chairman Francis Sebastian said the first tower of The Residences, which has 250 units, is already sold out.

With the quick sales take-up, Sebastian said they are already working on the second tower, which also has 250 units. He said the company will continue the development of the 10-hectare property but will be cautious in the market.

“We are still on the planning stage but we are slowly putting in place our projects here,” he said.

He said the company will focus on strengthening the position of the Marco Polo Hotel in the hospitality industry.

Sebastian is also the chairman of the First Metro Investments Corp.

Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB) will commence long-haul flights in the 3rd quarter of 2013. The airline will lease up to 8 Airbus A330-300 aircraft to serve new markets beyond the range of CEB’s current fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.

The Airbus A330 has a range of up to 11 hours which means CEB could serve markets such as Australia, Middle East, parts of Europe and the US. The aircraft is one of the most commonly used wide-body aircraft in operation , given its highly reliable operating statistics.

“The A330-300 will give us the lowest cost per seat, allowing us to drive long-haul fares 35% lower than those currently offered by other airlines, and as much as 80% lower when CEB offers promo fares. This aircraft type is very well suited to the kind of network we want to build and the routes we want to launch,” said Lance Gokongwei, CEB President and CEO.

“We are exploring serving cities where large Filipino communities reside --- Europe, Middle East, Oceania and the USA. Data indicates that more than half of Filipinos deployed in these regions take multiple stops and connecting flights because no home carrier can fly them there non-stop,” added Gokongwei.

Gokongwei cited Saudi Arabia as an example, where only 165,000 passengers flew direct non-stop flights from Manila (Civil Aeronautics Board 2010 data), compared to 293,000 Filipinos deployed to Saudi Arabia in the same year. This means that nearly half of Filipinos who flew to Saudi Arabia in 2010 had to take multiple flights to get to their destination. With CEB’s long haul operations, the budget airline will provide more affordable, direct flight options to Filipinos overseas, a population estimated to be 11 million worldwide.

MANILA, Philippines – Cebuano movies and filmmakers, led by Remton Siega Zuasolam, who bagged international recognitions for his film “Ang Damgo Ni Eleuteria,” take center stage at the Cinema One Originals Festival in Cebu City this February 11 to 16, at the SM City Cebu Cinema 8.

Among the films to be shown are Cebuano-made “Di Ingon ‘Nato [Not Like Us],” “My Paranormal Romance,” and “Confessional.” Mindanaoan film “Imburnal,” which is also in Visayan dialect, is also in the lineup.

“Ang Damgo Ni Eleuteria” is about Terya, a simple island girl, is about to leave home to marry a foreigner. On her long walk to the ferry that will take her to the airport, she mulls over the most important decision of her young life. The bizarre events of the Baliw-Baliw festival on Olango island parallel her state of mind.

The film recently took home two awards at the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival in Indonesia -- the Golden Hanoman (for best Asian feature film) and Geber (given by the Indonesian film communities).

It also won the Special Jury prize in the 12th Jeonju International Film Festival in South Korea.

In the local scene, the Cebuano-made film was also a big winner in the 34th Gawad Urian—bagging the most coveted Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography (by Christian Linaban) and Best Music (by Jerrold Tarog)—and was hailed Best Picture in the Cinemanila 2010 (Southeast Asian Category).

Also featured in the filmfest are titles that recently bagged awards in the 2011 Cinema One Originals Festival such as “Ka Oryang,” “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay,” “Mga Anino Sa Tanghaling Tapat,” “Cartas de la Soledad,” “Sa Kanto Ng Ulap at Lupa,” “Sa Ilalim ng Tulay,” and “Big Boy.”

1902 - cinema came to Cebu when the Cinematografo Electro-Optico Luminoso Walgrah was set up by one Pedro Alario in a warehouse on Magallanes St.
1910 - Cebu’s oldest playhouse (Teatro Junquera established in 1895 on Colon Street) came to be more of a cinemahouse than a playhouse.

1911 - Cine Ideal was built, a structure particularly built for movie viewing.

1922 - Cine Auditorium was built, with a capacity for 10,000 people.

1922 to 1923 - the year Visayan movie making started. A group of Cebuanos collaborated to make, the first Cebuano full-length silent movie.

1938 - the first talking motion picture in Cebuano was produced, called Bertoldo-Balodoy.

1940 - the second movie, Gugmang Talagsaon, was released, co-directed by Fernando Alfon and S. Alvarez Villarino.

WW II - the third movie, Florentino Borromeo’s Bulak sa Lunangan was in production when the WW II broke out, and thus, was never finished.

November 1947 - the movie Sa Kabukiran was premiered in Cebu’s Liberty Theater. Manuel P. Velez, a well-known Cebuano composer, helped produce the movie. He was the musical director while his daughter, Lilian Velez, was the movie’s star.

1949 - Velez linked up with local businessman and organized Star Pictures Production Corporation. The company produced its first film, Buenaventura Rodriguez’s Luha Sa Kalipay, which opened in Vision Theater on December 28, 1949. It had a Cebuano cast led by Bert Nombrado and Esterlina (Ester Colina)

1950s - the heyday of the Visayan film industry. Films were made by such outfits as Azucena Pictures, Mutya Productions, Antingan Pictures, VisMin Productions, Vista Films, and Adelpha Pictures. The industry produced such notable screenwriter-directors as Piux Kabahar, Fernando Alfon, Natalio Bacalso, S. Alvarez Villarino, and Leoux Juezan. It was also a time for the rising of such stars as Mat Ranillo Jr., Gloria Sevilla, Esterlina, Bert Nombrado, Mario Palacio, Virgie Solis, Caridad Sanchez, Danilo Nuñez, and comedian Arcadio Roma. There were around 80 Cebuano movies produced between 1947 and 1960, an average of some six new pictures a year

1950 - Princesa sa Tawi-Tawi, which starred Rudy Robles, was produced with English subtitles with an eye for the foreign market.

1955 - Salingsing sa Kasakit won a Best Picture nomination and a Best Child Actor award for Undo Juezan in the FAMAs competitions. This movie was also dubbed in Tagalog for wider distribution.

1960 - the beginning of the Cebuano movie industry’s decline

1969 - Badlis sa Kinabuhi, a Cebuano film produced by a Tagalog director, Leroy Salvador, won the Best Actress award for Gloria Sevilla in both the FAMAS and the 16th Asian Film Festival in Jakarta. The film was also chosen as the Best Balck and White Film in Jakarta and was entered in the Berlin Film Festival of 1969.

SRP investor ‘gets’ provincial lot

FILINVEST Land Inc. will put up a business process outsourcing (BPO) complex on the 1.2 hectare Capitol-owned lot in Salinas Drive, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City.

The Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center and Cebu City Treatment and Rehabilitation Center used to occupy the lot.

FLI plans to build four towers on the lot under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme.

The developer won the bidding on the lot with its P2-billion offer. Ayala affiliate Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. (CPVDC) offered P591.9 million for the lot while Vicsal Development Corp. of Metro Gaisano made a bid for P523.7 million.

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said in an interview that the lot will remain the property of the Provincial Government.

FLI will pay rent of P86.1 million for the four towers—one is a 10-storey structure while three will rise up to 18 levels—and a percentage share (profit share) of P155.3 million.

“We do not dispose of our property. We earn from that property (through) rental and percentage of revenues,” Garcia told Sun.Star Cebu.

“We took stock of our prime lots and realized that this is attractive to the private sector. We offered it to the private sector for development based on our terms,” she added.

Filinvest’s development and use of the property adds value to the Capitol lot because structures that will be built on the property will be transferred to the Provincial Government, she said.

FLI has a 25-year lease for the lot with the option to renew the agreement for another 25 years.

Capitol will release the certificate of award to the Filinvest after seven days.

Engr. Winnifred Lim, chief technical planning officer of FLI, said the developer can start construction in six months or as soon as they get the certificate of award from the Province.

Capitol’s minimum investment cost for the project reached P300 million.

Rent on the lot will increase five percent every year.

Garcia said she still needs to meet with the Provincial Board (PB) for their confirmation of the project.

FLI is the same company whose project at the South Road Properties was questioned by the Capitol.

When the governor was asked last night for her reaction to this through text message, she refused to comment.

Rey Maribao, FLI business planning head, said the company is confident it will attract occupants to its towers despite the threat of a US bill against outsourcing.

The 1,000-seat, 2,220-sq m Shrine of Mary is in the South Reclamation Zone in Cebu. Arnaiz plans to create a main entrance set against a series of walls with varying heights.

The project is financed by SM, which is building a mall complex in Cebu similar to SM Mall of Asia in Manila.

The entrance evokes the mystery one supposedly experiences while wandering through a mythical forest. The series of walls symbolizes the many paths and obstacles one goes through to arrive at one’s own enlightenment, said Arnaiz.

“Construction started this month. The building should be finished before the end of 2012. The owners’ goal is to have Christmas Mass celebrated in the church this year,” he added.

CAZA is also into urban planning and gentrification. The company will have a project with the Cebu City government to improve the streetscape of historic Osmeña Avenue.

The gentrification project along the 2 km stretch entails creating a series of sidewalks, patterns and monuments from downtown to the city hall building. It also involves a series of “traffic-calming” devices, lamps and benches.

“It’s probably one of the simplest and humblest projects we’ve done, but it’s one of my favorites,” said Arnaiz. “It’s different from other projects we’ve done, that’s why I’m proud of it.”

Cebu hit by mid-range housing shortage

CEBU, Philippines - While demand for residential properties in Cebu has surged to record highs, Metro Cebu and the province as a whole is suffering from shortage of middle range house and lot products, with almost zero inventory to date.

Philippine Allied Chamber of Real Estate Brokers (PhilAcre) president and licensed salesman Anthony Leuterio said that buyers are now demanding for house and lot products, specifically those that are priced between P1 million to P2.8 million, within the Metro Cebu area.

Although, there are still active interest from the market in buying condominium units, Leuterio said house and lot products are much in demand.
