LordCarnal March 24th, 2006, 06:57 AM Miss tallers if you can't appreciate other cities in our country why not concentrate only in your own province thread. Are you not educated enough to say all these nasty things about the pictures you have seen? Please be reminded that this thread is for the cebuanos and all other people who have the same interest with the development of our province. Your too much huh. By the way guys im islandergirl from Koror, Republic of Palau here in the pacific ocean. Im from Cebu but im working here for 2 years na. Im from Sogod, Cebu and single and only 23 years old. Can i join guys? byw guys do you know where Palau is ? check the map guys.
Hey islandergirl... Lots of islanders now here.. Before there was pnggirl from Papaua New Guinea.. Anyhow, welcome to Skyscrapercity!
So you're in Palau now? It's just near the Philippines. There's already a Davao-Palau flight via AsianSpirit.
Keep on posting here... Btw, 23 pa pod ko.. :)
dive-cebu March 24th, 2006, 07:24 AM good afternoon mates, im very much happy that a lots of us cebuanos have one thing in common, ----dili gayud kita palupig sa uban, maglinabanay gayud kita, siguro nga kadugo nato si lapulapu, we love our province so much. we are proud to be a cebuano. me im studying here at the university of queensland in brisbane, queensland, australia and a pure blooded lapulapu este, cebuano. to miss tallers keep distance from all of us or otherwise......==++...hehehehe sorry guys for being so rude. btw just call me ausiecebu your friend here from downunder.
Welcome bro! I'm sure you're gonna enjoy it here. Just like you, I'm new here but I feel so at home. I already know how does it feel to be away from our hometown-Cebu since I'm assigned in Davao as of the moment. Maayo na lang, I was able to discover this very cozy forum...
dive-cebu March 24th, 2006, 07:25 AM Hey islandergirl... Lots of islanders now here.. Before there was pnggirl from Papaua New Guinea.. Anyhow, welcome to Skyscrapercity!

dive-cebu March 24th, 2006, 07:30 AM Can we do a tally if pila na gyud ta dire? Just a suggestion though...
ThisFire March 24th, 2006, 07:30 AM slerz, thank you for the beautiful pics but also for promoting our rich history and culture! :)
ausiecebu March 24th, 2006, 07:33 AM thank mates for the very warm welcome. we must defend cebu from people like miss tallers. anyway i just want to know if you guys likes scuba diving, when i was still in our beloved cebu i always go with my father to moalboal and to malapascua, but i regret i never get any pictures while we were underwater. i can compare malapascua with some diving spot here in far north queensland.
dive-cebu March 24th, 2006, 07:36 AM nothing is permanent in this world but change...and indeed, cebu's skyline is drastically changing... and with all of the constructions going on around this metropolis, i bet, the next time you'll visit cebu you may exclaimed " maling flight yata nasakyan ko ah, Cebu ba to?" :)
with the statement "ang ganda tlga ng cebu para sa inyo!" well i am very proud to say na OO! ang ganda ng cebu para sakin! it has managed to sustain its economic growth with or without the help of the national government. And while others are preoccupied by politicking and bickering, Cebuanos are focused with its goal - progress! And well, you can see the fruit of Cebuanos labor, skyscrapers sprouting like mushrooms, new investments, and major constructions here and there. With the mountains as the metropolis' backdrop similar to HongKong - for me....oo ang ganda ng Cebu!
I agree with you TJ. Anyway, may I just thank you for the email that you sent re condo unit prices. I'm still waiting for my friend if he's interested about this one.. Thanks again!

Unfortunately ausiecebu, it's not my cup of tea. So ironic lang coz my name in this forum is dive-cebu. Actually, I just made it dive since my nickname is really div. Para mas related sa cebu, I added E sa div... :)

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/5006/site1zg.gif (http://imageshack.us)
The Asiatown IT Park is conceived as a well-planned IT economic zone and modern trading hub with global gateway. The 24-hectare integrated mixed-use business park was approved last April 6, 2000 by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority Board as an economic zone, and was granted Presidential Proclamation No. 12 last February 27, 2001 as an Information Technology Special Economic Zone.
It is envisioned to attract locators in the information technology services like software development, content development, hardware design, research and development services, computer-based support services and the like. Being an integrated community, the Asiatown IT Park will also host locators engaged in commercial, recreational, residential, office, medical, hotel, telecommunication, education and export trading services.
Asiatown IT Park is developed by Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corporation (CPVDC), a publicly listed company which began as a joint venture between the provincial government of Cebu and Ayala Land. Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corporation is now majority owned by Cebu Holdings, Inc. an affiliate of Ayala Land.

maybe because it is more expensive to build. Medalla's megadome IMO is simpler. I like this really. I hope they will consider this after the CICC is completed but at SRP.

MarkiiBoi March 24th, 2006, 04:38 PM Looking for the Cebu megadome? Use your nose
The Cebu Provincial Government is working on a really tight deadline to finish the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in time for the city’s hosting of an Asean summit this December.
Capitol had long planned for an international convention center and even held an architectural design competition for a megadome but the project was stalled during the time of then governor Pablo Garcia because the Provincial Board refused to approve it.
The project has already been approved and awarded to a contractor this year. It will be built on a lot in the reclamation area in Mandaue City. And there’s the rub. It is located in a spot in Mandaue City notorious for its suffocating stink.
If you’re on your way to Cebu City from Mandaue, here’s how you can spot the site of the megadome.
1. Pass by the reclamation area road and when you spot the city’s sports complex (look for Mayor Thadeo Ouano’s huge photograph) start taking really deep breaths.
2. When you reach the Welcome to New Mandaue City marker, time you’re breathing carefully, you only need to do three more in-and-out deep breathing cycles.
3. When you spot another of Mayor Ouano’s pictures, this time on a billboard on waste segregation, hold your breathe.
4. When you start gasping for air, look to your right, the area fenced off with WTCI signs is the area where the megadome or CICC will be built.
The stink in the area is so suffocating it shuts off all your other senses. You see, you feel, you hear and you taste nothing but the nauseating, enveloping stink.
You’d start seeing a toxic cloud even if it isn’t there and you’d be paranoid for the next few hours that the stink has stuck into your clothes, into the very fiber of your being. The smell is so bad that anything built on that site will be a monument to stink.
To be fair to Mayor Ouano, though, the stink isn’t as bad in the past days but the difference is only by a few degrees. It’s still nauseating and you can still taste it.
Jimbu March 24th, 2006, 04:43 PM ^^ they can use this too for CITEC. ur right bai jimbu the best place to build this is really at the SRP. its really really really world class!
Cebu really needs a world class sports arena. gone are the days of cebu coliseum in sanciangko. bati na kaayo. bisag unsaun pa na nila ug repair kay ang location crowded and no appropriate parking area.

Jimbu March 24th, 2006, 05:10 PM IT company to pursue $30M investments here
The Freeman 03/25/2006
An IT-related foreign company with close to US$30-million investments in Cebu has planned of expanding its business interests in spite of the political climate in the country.
Bigfoot Company's chief executive officer Joe Mercado bared that they are now negotiating with the Cebu City government to acquire a lot at the South Reclamation Project for huge and medium scale expansion plans, but declined to elaborate on what specific plans their company has in mind.
Apart from software development, Bigfoot's ventures include a call center, an English institution and the entertainment industry, recently, with state-of-the-art facilities at par with Hollywood, the first-ever in the Philippine filmmaking industry.
About 30 to 40 percent of their total investments have been poured into their entertainment business, this according to Mercado.
Bigfoot's first film venture entitled "Three Needles" is due for distribution in the US in three month's time.
Mercado, likewise, bared the company has definite plans in expanding their entertainment business that is the International Academy of Film and Television located in Lapu-Lapu City.
Last month, their request to the Philippine Export Processing Zone to have the academy accredited as an IT-zone was already granted.
Further, Mercado said that in the last five years since settling their base operations in Cebu, they have not encountered problems with respective government agencies like the Board of Investments, PEZA, and local government units in the processing of their documents.
He further added that the fact that they have expansion plans means they still have confidence in the government and is not overly affected with the political situation in the country.
Currently, the company is employing 500 to 600 locals.
The Board of Investments regional office, on the other hand, said it is optimistic that more foreign investments would come in to Cebu this year as foreign economists and institutions are reportedly one in their observation that President Arroyo is unlikely to be ousted from power despite continuing political threats to her administration. - Gregg M. Sinjin P. March 25th, 2006, 06:52 AM Osmeña: Stay home for P10,000
Mayor offers to pay towns to
keep people out of Metro Cebu
TO decongest Metro Cebu streets, a four-day holiday isn't enough for Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.
He offered to pay each Cebu town P10,000 as financial aid if the town undertakes "balik lungsod" activities to attract constituents to stay in their hometowns during the ASEAN Ministers Summit in December.
At his request, Malacañang earlier declared December 11 to 14 as special non-working days in the cities of Mandaue, Lapu Lapu and Cebu, but Osmeña yesterday said "the declaration of a holiday is not an assurance that people will move out of town."
City Hall officials earlier lobbied for the holiday, saying it would reduce the burden of securing foreign officials and other delegates of the international conference.
Festivals
Osmeña also appealed to Cebu residents to plan their possible destinations for the long holiday in December because Cebu City would have to close some major roads for the summit, causing an inconvenience to many motorists.
He said he would ask Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado to encourage towns to hold festivals "and set up special packages or long weekend packages for resorts, hotels, and tours" in December.
"I'm sure the provincial government will also give its counterpart. This is their (municipalities) chance to stir up the interest of their constituents to come home," said Osmeña.
In response, Governor Garcia said she welcomed the idea but wanted to consult others first.
"We will sit down and I will get the pulse of the town mayors," she told a news conference.
She said if the idea pushes through, she would suggest another "Suroy-Suroy Sugbu" tour package for Cebu towns to promote their local festivals.
Osmeña said neighboring towns could organize their "balik lungsod" activities in clusters.
"It will be more fun in the provinces than here. For all we know they might have that kind of activity every year."
Malaysia
The ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur in 2005 didn't require a special holiday.
"That's because the summit was only held in one area. They were in total control there in terms of security," said Nagiel Bañacia, City Hall public information officer.
The situation is different here because of the involvement of the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu Lapu, which are separated from each other by a few kilometers travel, he said.
"It will be a security nightmare in Cebu because of its geographical location," Bañacia said, quoting the observation of local security personnel who were sent to study the security preparations in Malaysia.
To give the towns a P10,000 incentive, the mayor has to get approval of the city council for a P5 million supplemental budget with the financial aid to be released as a grant or through a Memorandum of Agreement.
Councilor Jocelyn Pesquera, head of the budget committee, said this budget could be authorized under the Cebu City Big Brother program, but whether funds are available, she said only City Treasurer Tessie Camarillo could answer.
Apology
Meanwhile, Osmeña apologized in a radio interview to Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano and other sectors who disagreed with him over the four-day holiday proposal.
"Mangayo lang ko sa tanan og pasaylo labi pa kang Mayor Ouano and others who disagreed with me, pero ang akong concerns ang safety sa atong lugar," Osmeña said over radio dyLA.
The two mayors earlier clashed over the holiday proposal with Ouano describing the idea a "overacting" and Osmeña taking a dig at Ouano's failure to detect the existence of a large shabu laboratory in Mandaue in 2004 as an indicator that a terrorist bomb may also go unnoticed.
Ouano had wanted the holiday limited to public and private schools and government offices in Metro Cebu.
Osmeña said he had miscalculated public opinion, thinking the four-day holiday would get popular support. The business sector loudly protested the lost days of productivity and extra expense for operating during the holiday.
The mayor apologized "for whatever misunderstandings happened because I feel very strongly about the safety issue."
Gov. Garcia immediately thanked the mayor for his gesture.
"You see, this is why the Cebuano is great. Nakita sa atong duha ka leader (Ouano and Osmeña) that hey can rise above their own personal feelings for something which is for the greater good," Garcia said.
Osmeña repeated that the holiday proclamation by Malacañang "is not a victory for Tommy Osmeña. Sometimes I have a nightmare of what's going to happen during the ASEAN summit and we have to take every step that we can to make it successful," he said.
Sinjin P. March 25th, 2006, 06:53 AM P400M plans for airport
improvement bared
WIDER airport parking space for jets to be used by heads of state. Spruced up VIP lounges, asphalt roads and landscaping at the Mactan airport. One-way mirrors to shield the sight of heavily armed security forces.
These are part of P400 million worth of infrastructure improvements being proposed for the ASEAN Summit in Cebu this December. Most will go to improvements in airport facilities and roads.
Whether a sufficient budget will be released by the national government, however, is "subject to discussion".
The plans were presented yesterday at the Capitol in a briefing with Consul General Marciano Paynor, who assured that Cebu would be the venue of the summit, not Manila.
"Right now, there is no doubt in my mind, or the President's mind that it will be held here," he said.
"We are glad now where we are, considering that three months ago there was nothing in the horizon. So instead of areas of concern, I'd say (we have) milestones of achievement."
Paynor, presidential adviser on state and foreign visits , heard presentations from airport manager Adelberto Yap of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the Department of Public Works and Development and other members of the Cebu Organizing Committee which is co-chaired by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
Two hectares will be added to the airport runway to accommodate two 747 jets that Japan plans to use during the summit.
Total airport preparation costs will reach P105 million, including the purchase of P5-million air-conditioned VIP buses to ferry passengers from the ramp to the airport building.
Asphalting of arrival and departure areas, and landscaping are also being proposed at the airport along with neon-lighted signages following international standards to guide aircraft and passenger traffic.
Paynor said he was satisfied with the status of preparations.
"At a stage like this, we are concerned with every minute detail because we are just starting but in varying degrees."
"The President has already made the decision that the summit will be held here. When we said in the past that the summit will be held in Manila (as backup plan), that is the last (option) in order to fulfill the plan," Paynor told reporters.
Tighter airport security will mean additional officers but many of the heavily armed security men will be positioned behind a one-way mirror. Paynor said less visibility of heavily armed men is needed to avoid creating a bad impression about Cebu's peace and order.
Asked about the availability of a budget, Paynor said this will have to be deliberated by the committee first.
The DPWH Regional office presented a plan for P278.1 million worth of improvements. Nine road sections will be improved in the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue.
The Provincial Government will soon start building a P270-million Cebu International Convention Center as the summit venue.Nevertheless, Paynor said alternate conference sites are being eyed as backup such as the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City or the Shangri-la Mactan Island Resort in Lapu-Lapu City.
Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, COC co-chairman, maintained that the building would be finished in time.
"You can expect the CICC at the time that it will be needed," she said.
The governor said the work schedule was "very realistic" from the point of view of engineers, architects and herself.
Sinjin P. March 25th, 2006, 06:58 AM AIM professors throw challenge to Cebu City
Officials of the Asian Institute of Management yesterday challenged Cebu City officials to make the city a more competitive place for the business sector.
AIM's Professor Mario Antonio Lopez, during the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project regional roadshow held at the Cebu Midtown Hotel yesterday, said that while Cebu City is doing good in infrastructure, such thrust should cater to the needs of businessmen.
"Cebu has good infrastructure and in fact has many infrastructure projects than any other cities but are these projects what businessmen want? Cebu has many infrastructure projects but businessmen might find them less important," Lopez said.
Lopez, who presented the state of competitiveness of the Visayan cities, clarified that the failure of Cebu City to land among the top 10 competitive cities in the country in the 2005 AIM survey did not mean it is not competitive.
The survey's respondents were local businessmen, he said citing the results that showed Cebu City lagged behind other metropolitan cities in the country. "It depends on the stakeholder they are listening to," said Lopez.
The survey's five most competitive metro cities were Davao, Las Piñas, Makati, Marikina and Muntinlupa.
A total of 65 cities were ranked according to seven indicators: cost of doing business, dynamism of the local economy, linkages and accessibility, human resources and training, infrastructure, responsiveness to business needs, and quality of life.
While Cebu City ranked 1st in terms of linkages and accessibility, it ranked 12th in infrastructure, 4th in the cost of doing business, 10th in dynamism of the local economy, 4th in human resources training, 9th in responsiveness to business needs, and 8th in the quality of life.
Mayor Osmeña expressed embarrassment over the survey results, and asked for an explanation of the findings from AIM officials.
Lopez told reporters that the reaction of the mayor is normal, saying Cebu has been doing good that many cities have been looking at it as an example. "That is why you have to find new ways to improve. Make your strengths stronger and improve your weaknesses," he said.
Among the strengths of Cebu City are high profitability of business, vibrant tourism sector, availability of business support services, among others, said Lopez.
On the other hand, Lopez said Cebu City's some weaknesses are graft and corruption, resistance of local workers to develop skills, poor waste management, and unreliable electric power.
AIM Police Center executive director Dr. Federico Macaranas added: "If Cebu City does not make it to the top five, it does not mean that it is not competitive."
"There are losers sometimes and there are winners sometimes. It does not mean the competitive cities today may still be the competitive cities three years from now," he said.
Sinjin P. March 25th, 2006, 06:59 AM Ayala Malls pioneer first electronic gift card in RP
Ayala Center Cebu (ACC) has joined its sister malls in the country in introducing the first Electronic Gift Card (eGC) in the Philippines.
Ayala Malls' eGC is the first and only gift card offered by a mall in the country, which is powered by the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI).
This innovative and trendy gift certificate can be used for multiple purchases across all Ayala Malls which include Greenbelt, Glorietta, Alabang Town Center, Market!Market!, and now in ACC.
In ACC, about over a hundred participating merchants, including Metro (Gaisano) Ayala and supermarket, a statement from Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) said.
Ayala Malls believe that along with an increase in purchasing power, today's consumer is embracing the electronic age when it comes to shopping.
In fact, cashless purchases have now slowly taking the acceptance by the Filipino consumers, either through credit or debit arrangements.
The electronic usage has also expanded to traditional giving of gift certificates, which usually comes in paper checks.
"Plastic money has become the new cash and is more popular among consumers, because it is more convenient, or simply because some feel safer carrying cards rather than actual money bills. Electronic check acceptance is fast for the consumer, safe for the business and greatly helps reduce the processing costs of paper checks," the statement further stated.
Either purchased in ACC, or any Ayala-operated malls all over the country, the eGC is accepted in over 1,000 BPI affiliated establishments in the Ayala Malls.
It is accepted in department stores, supermarkets, restaurants, boutiques, specialty shops, beauty salons, and pharmacies in the Ayala Malls.
This prepaid gift card comes in denominations of P500, P1,000, P2,000, P3,000 and P5,000. The eGC is transferable and is valid for one year from date of purchase.
Recently, the Ayala Group strengthened its retail business arm through the mall operations by introducing strong brand recall from simply called the commercial/retail group to Ayala Malls.
Since its birth some 11 years ago, ACC has effectively managed to live up its vision to influence the market's preferences and behavior which triggered many changes in the way Cebuanos' shop, dine, entertain, and most of all live.
Developed by Ayala Group affiliate CHI, Ayala Center has maintained to be the crown jewel and centerpiece of the spanning 60-hectare Cebu Business Park. For years, it has sustained its role as the major revenue generator and growth catalyst for the company.

Could you explain your opinion? In my own opinion, Cebu City is more than a real city if we base it on figures. And suburban resort? Cebu City doesn't even have a beach resort. :D Maybe you meant Lapu-lapu City. :)
D'Transporter March 26th, 2006, 05:16 AM Honestly, Cebu resembles more like a suburban resort instead of a city. Perhaps in the future, it will become a 'real' city.
Are you kidding me??? Have you been there???
Askal82 March 26th, 2006, 05:28 AM Well, there are many greens and houses in between filling the gaps of low to middle rise buildings although the skyline is developing. There are no existing public transport system like the LRT's or metro systems yet. People move around through cars and jeepneys using roadways. The city's culture is more genteel and recreational rather than demanding and always on the move. I'm not sure if you have buildings that showcases performances of culture like opera houses, broadway-like shows, museums, archives and libraries- something that a 'real' city ought to have. I hope in the future they get built as well.
MarkiiBoi March 26th, 2006, 05:55 AM ^^ You are mentioning the added convenience or attraction that a city is ought to have. But who cares about those extra stuff if you have more important basic concerns to attend to and pressing issues to tackle? [although the LRT system is already on the paperworks]. Maybe there come a time that the things you mentioned will materialize, but as of now, needs first before the wants.

IF the real meaning of heritage is inheritance -- that which past generations have handed down to us as stewards of the country's collective memory -- then like the foolish servant in the Bible parable, we have chosen to fritter it away. This is not to say that as a nation we don't have problems other than patrimonial destruction that threaten to overwhelm us in their magnitude. A cursory glance at any newspaper makes it clear that what ails us isn't going away any time soon or that our troubles can be cured with Band-Aid. If it would do any good, we could wonder how much we are to blame for these problems-whether economic or social-and if they aren't of our own making. But then I don't know that we're really given to much introspection or accepting our share of responsibility. (These days the opposition isn't zeroing in on blaming the Spanish or the Americans but trying to make us believe that one person is responsible for all our ills as though they had no hand in it despite many of them having been in government a donkey's years.)
Having said that, let me tell you a horror story that threatens to be worse than all the crimes against heritage I've run across (no, not as evil as demolishing the Jai-Alai building but close or claiming you're God's gift to preservation while obliterating Manila's historic spaces). Over the years to our grief, we've encountered the destruction of a peoples' patrimony due to greed, ignorance, political expediency, indifference and many times arrogance. This is a continuation of the sorry tale of our country and the senseless erasure of decades of history in the now woeful town of Argao in Cebu province.
The present church of Argao, whose first titular saint was Michael the Archangel, dates from around the beginning of the 19th century. It may have been the second or third to be constructed since the parish was founded in 1733. When I first saw it more than 30 years ago, it was a sleepy little pueblo by the sea although I learned later that antique dealers from Manila had already been there and the stunning ivory statue of St. Michael had long been gone.
Romantically, there were cobwebs and dust everywhere but they didn't obscure the baroque carving of the pews (since taken to the Cebu Cathedral, I hear) or the richly painted ceiling or the beautifully ornamented "retablos" that not even the apparent neglect could hide. Since the Filipino has lost so much of both his natural and man-made heritage, it was awesome to find a jewel like this one. In the intervening years, I would make an effort to travel to Argao whenever I was in Cebu to admire the gorgeous carvings and images. Some five years ago, they were still intact.
Last year, I began to hear whispers about the destruction of the images by a parish priest for reasons best known to himself (God knows what he told his bishop or whether he even bothered). Perhaps he saw the movie "Goldfinger" and imagined himself to be a latter-day Midas. Whatever insanity possessed him compelled him to go to the nearest hardware store, buy several gallons of gold paint and slather all the statues on the main altar. Perhaps he thought this was the way gold leaf was applied in the old days. During the Revolution, the donors from the town probably would have strung him up from the nearest tree and left him to the vultures.
The saddest part, it seems to me, is that we have so little left of this heritage. We like to say Bangkok has this or Bali has that and poor us, what do we have? Well, we had Argao, for one, but obviously it has been totally, thoroughly and terminally wasted on us.
Not satisfied with his grand feat of vandalism, Father Montecillo went off to continue the destruction of the town's heritage. In the cemetery, he had the carved main arch of the gate demolished to make way for his own design because it is said he wanted to enlarge the space. You think perhaps these people do this on purpose or are they just stupid?
Having been a member of the Committee on Monuments and Sites of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) for more years than I care to remember, we had already zeroed in on parish priests as part of the problem in the efforts to conserve this country's heritage. Ever since the NCCA was formed in the late 1980s, we kept trying to send lecturers on preservation to the seminaries. For years, we couldn't even get an appointment with the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines. Our reasoning was that the value of patrimony and cultural identity had to be explained to the seminarians and the responsibility of their stewardship emphasized.
More than a dozen years later, I don't think the committee has succeeded in getting a toehold on the door of a seminary. Consequently, the Church has produced priests like Montecillo who hasn't a clue about aesthetics or history and the concept of stewardship. Try to imagine what went through his brain that he dared put his mark on images that didn't belong to him and erase more than 100 years of history.
If I were younger, perhaps I might have felt anger at such arrogance but what I feel now is regret. I'm sorry for us. I'm sorry that we don't have the leaders who care enough or are enlightened enough, whether in the Church or in government. I'm sorry that our egos overwhelm us and we can't seem to see beyond our noses. Here is a country where so much has already been destroyed and here was a treasure that had been preserved all these many years, only to be destroyed by some idiot.

Well, its my opinion. For me, that is my own personal defintion of 'city'. Categorically speaking, Cebu City is a city but in my personal definition, its more of a suburb like Los Angeles. :D.
MarkiiBoi March 26th, 2006, 06:05 AM ^^ that should do it, cebu city is like los angeles. hehehehe :hahaha:
Sinjin P. March 26th, 2006, 06:12 AM A city is an urban area that is differentiated from a town, village, or hamlet by size, population density, importance, or legal status.
A city usually consists of residential, industrial and business areas together with administrative functions which may relate to a wider geographical area. A large share of a city's area is primarily taken up by housing, which is then supported by infrastructure such as roads, streets and often (but not at all times) public transport routes such as a rapid transit system. Lakes and rivers may be the only undeveloped areas within the city. The study of cities is covered extensively in human geography.
So, Askal, if Cebu is a suburb, then you are saying that same goes with Davao, Iloilo, Bacolod, CDO, Butuan, etc.
Askal82 March 26th, 2006, 06:15 AM ^^ Yeah. That's how I 'feel' about them. Im saying they are my personal definitions. I stated that categorically speaking they are cities but in my own definition and standards they feel more of a suburban side.

There are actually six retablos inside the church -- One main retablo, and two smaller retablos in each side-chapel. The church ceiling is covered with canvas with painted scenes of the beatitudes and the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church.
Most of the ornaments (and some fixtures) inside the church are actually new, probably imported from Spain or Rome.

Sinjin P. March 26th, 2006, 06:16 AM ^^ Well that's your opinion and you're entitled to that but if you look at the figures, Cebu City is among the top 10 largest income generator in the Philippines. (Most of the top 10 cities come from Metro Manila) :) Let's wait and see years from now.
Askal82 March 26th, 2006, 06:24 AM ^^ that should do it, cebu city is like los angeles. hehehehe :hahaha:
It does. San Franciso is more urban in outlook than LA. They have 2 mini skylines but all of its areas are flats with rows and rows of houses and establishments. I hope Cebu city won't copy L.A. in the future though.
slerz March 26th, 2006, 07:42 AM Honestly, Cebu resembles more like a suburban resort instead of a city. Perhaps in the future, it will become a 'real' city.
you only feel it but living here in Cebu City
In your opinion, Cebu City will never be a real city in that case coz Cebu is a resort island and it's a strong appeal for Cebu as a resort island and at the same time a city, a real city. But for you Cebu City will only become a real city if it will be separated from this resort island, a lone city (not a resort city) makes a city a 'real' city? a big resort city cannot be called a 'real' city? Los Angeles for me is a real city and at the same time a resort city.
well, it's your own opinion. My reaction is also my own opinion :D

ah ok, you meant the look of a city that makes you feel Cebu City is not a real city but in definition it is...

rustyboi March 26th, 2006, 09:13 AM Well, its my opinion. For me, that is my own personal defintion of 'city'. Categorically speaking, Cebu City is a city but in my personal definition, its more of a suburb like Los Angeles. :D.
i find that quite odd though. i mean, metro manila only fits your definition of a "real city" out of 117 in the whole Philippines. how did you come up with such opinion? :dunno:
ashton March 26th, 2006, 09:19 AM ^^ he even mentioned 'broadway shows', do we have that in Manila? :)
JAMAICUS March 26th, 2006, 09:22 AM ^^ To answer your question : Yes, sometimes at CCP.(Ms.Saigon to name one) :)
ashton March 26th, 2006, 09:25 AM okey. thanks now Manila is a real city and Cebu is fake. LOL
rustyboi March 26th, 2006, 09:32 AM Well, there are many greens and houses in between filling the gaps of low to middle rise buildings although the skyline is developing. I hope in the future they get built as well.
hey what's got into you? you're not the askal guy we knew before. anyway, this is funny coz you've been around SSC for quite sometime but you seemed not to know Cebu has MUSEUMS ARCHIVES AND LIBRARIES. wow this is ridiculuos. we've been mentioning SRP, road tunnel, Cebu LRT etc. come on, cut it out bro. and for the record, walay opera house sa pilipinas oi. :bash:

xDieselJockx March 26th, 2006, 10:14 AM I haven't really partied in Cebu yet. How's the night life there? Better than Manila or MM area? I hope I will get another chance to visit Cebu as I love the city and the surrounding areas. I've got a feeling that if I go to Cebu next time, I will have to pay for it (LOL) and it would be pure leasure if I ever find the time to go. I may not get sent there anymore, I hope not though, just knock on wood.
I still enjoy looking at you guy's post, the updates and the pictures....... (I just don't understand most of what you guys were talking about half of the time but that's okay by me)

ei visit Cebu this April 22. It's when the Jamaican Nights will be celebrated. It's an annual party event in cebu. You may visit www.jamaicannights.com for further info.
This summer, Cebu's calendar is jam-packed with events, and Jamaican Nights is one of the biggest. Jamaican Nights started out as one of many beach parties held during the summer vacation (March/April). But something about Jamaican Nights was different, and it has since evolved into the mother of all beach parties. Hordes of people fly in from Manila, and MTV Philippines covers the event live.
The atmosphere is somewhat similar to what goes on during Spring Break events in the US.

they're expecting no less than 15,000 people for the event daw! five years ago, the event drew over 10,000 party animals. the atmosphere is somewhat similar to what goes on during Spring Break events in the US. i know Boracay has tons of beach parties every summer night but i doubt if the crowd can come close to as big as Jamaican's. :? apart from being the country's top tourist destination, is Cebu rightful to be tagged as the beach party capital too?

CCCI to continue IT, tourism thrust
NEWLY—elected Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Francis Monera has pledged to continue the chamber’s long-term promotion of the province’s information and communication technology (ICT) and tourism industries.
“ICT and tourism are two top industries where Cebu has competitive advantages and we are bound to continue our advocacy in promoting these sectors,” Monera said in an interview yesterday.
Monera said Cebu City remains competitive and a “popular brand” despite the result of Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center’s Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project last year. The ranking excluded Cebu City from the top five metro cities.
Cebu City will have to improve its infrastructure and utilities and cut down on government bureaucracy, AIM professors had said.
“I have no doubts, Cebu is competitive. But we can always agree that there is room for improvement. The AIM study should be taken constructively,” he said.
Monera also said CCCI will continue to build up small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
“The bulk of businesses, not just in Cebu but also in the country, are SMEs. They are the ones who create jobs,” he said.
Focus
Monera told Sun.Star Cebu the new CCCI leadership will focus on developing entrepreneurial skills of Cebuanos, improving the business climate and strengthening its partnership with the local and provincial governments in promoting its advocacies.
Monera was elected CCCI’s president last week and will serve a two-year term. He is the vice president of Ayala Land Inc., chief operating officer of Cebu Holdings Inc. and managing director of Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp.
CCCI has close to 700 member—companies, from single-proprietorships, partnerships and Securities and Exchange Commission-registered firms.
CCCI’s immediate past president Robert Go, on the other hand, will now serve as Visayas governor of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He will represent and supervise the industry chambers in Region 7, comprising Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor.
“My main task will be to strengthen the business community in the various cities and provinces of the region for a stronger voice and a united stand, especially in our pro-active advocacy for business competitiveness in the international arena, especially in the region’s two winning industries–tourism and ICT,” Go said in a statement.
He said “working towards the growth and strengthening of the new and smaller chambers of commerce across the region” will be among his thrusts.
With the establishment of more area-specific chambers of commerce, business and industry can rise by strengthening tourism in the localities and promoting ICT as infant industry in the provinces, Go said. (ALC)

UNSOLVED CRIMES
Church robbers invade Visayas
By Jeannette I. Andrade, Reporter
The Manila Times
The church is probably the last place anyone expects a crime to be committed.
But between 2002 and 2004, a wave of thefts swept several churches in the Visayas.
Catholic churches in Bohol, Iloilo and Cebu were the scenes of decapitations, mutilations and disappearances of centuries-old religious icons and artifacts.
Although church thefts were recorded even before 2002, at least 30 robberies were committed in that year.
The Santa Filomena Church in Sibonga town, Cebu, was the first victim. On April 2 the heads and hands of the statues of Saint Peter and the “Birhen Maria Salome” were cut off by unidentified persons.
The vandalism shocked devotees of the patron saints.
Local police had no leads and the case lay forgotten.
On June 1 thieves struck at the San Guillermo de Aquitania Church in Dalaguete, Cebu, decapitating a five-foot Sacred Heart of Jesus icon. Another mutilation occurred in Santander town, and later, 160-year-old icons at Sogod and Catmon towns were taken.
In Sogod town the hands and head of Saint James as well as the ivory images of Saint Joseph, Sagrada Corazon and the Medalla Milagrosa were swiped, and in Catmon the century-old statue of San Guillermo de Aquitania disappeared. Similar thefts took place in Alcoy and San Remigio towns.
At this point the Cebu Provincial Police Office took notice and coordinated with churches around the province in securing the religious images.
Because security in Cebu churches tightened, the thieves shifted to churches in Bohol.
On November 16 the churches in Talibon and Garcia Hernandez towns lost the images of San Roque, Virgin Dolorosa, Virgin of Happy, the Holy Child Jesus, the hands and head of Saint Joseph and 10 antique priests’ robes.
No more thefts took place for four months after that. The break ended on March 5, 2003, when Barangay Cam*bitoon in Inabanga town lost its San Vicente Ferrer and San Roque icons.
The thieves then returned to Cebu, striking once every week for five months, resting for two months and then resuming their vandalism.
On November 26, 2003, a break-in was reported at the parish in Bacong, Negros Oriental, which lost the statues of San Jose, San Isidro Labrador, the Virgin of Korea and Santa Monica.
The statues of San Jose and San Isidro Labrador had been in the church since the 19th century and were considered priceless.
The resurgence meant that the group responsible for the thefts in Cebu and Bohol had transferred its operations anew. But Cebu remained its base of operations.
Iloilo was the next target. In Tigbauan and Santa Barbara towns on November 24 and 25, 2004, thieves made off with the feet of a 15th-century Santo Niño statue estimated at half a million pesos and the ivory head of San Agustin which has been with the Santa Barbara Parish since 1872.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Commission on the Cultural Heritage of the Church sought the help of the Philippine National Police to catch the thieves and recover the religious items.
The religious images are priceless, and their loss appeals for the preservation of centuries of faith and culture.

thank you markiboi, naintindihan ko naman konte. Napansin ko na naging masugid kayong magkaibigan and it's good that it happened here in this forum. I hope more friends in the making here in SSC like slerz and markiiboi had gone and I believe a lot of you here in SSC Cebu are better friends now dahil sa mga trippings nyo. Kayo rin lang ata mga Cebu forumers ang naging barkada dito sa SSC, napansin ko.
Thank you, more power to Cebu and be back soon.

Ouano: 2 free garbage bins per household
CDN
Mandaue City is seeking a P350-million grant from the World Bank to purchase more garbage compactor trucks and bins.
Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano said Sunday the grant is being facilitated through a group in the United Nations that is very much concerned about the environment.
Once the deal is finalized, Ouano said the garbage bins - similar to the ones already placed along city side streets - would be distributed to every household.
Each household will receive two - one for biodegradable wastes and the other for non-biodegradable.
"Libre na siya, ibutang sa (That's for free from the) city government to every household para maanad sila pag-segregate sa basura (so that they will get used to segregating their garbage)," Ouano told Cebu Daily News.
Households that want to request for more have to pay for the extra bins, Ouano said.
Ouano said this would instill discipline to city residents on managing their waste.
As of now, the mayor said the UN group was still evaluating the city's proposal.
Mandaue City started its two-bin system one month ago. He said a 15 to 20 percent success rate has been achieved so far.
Some 4,000 garbage bins have been placed on the city's streets. An order for another 4,000 will be distributed next month in the interior sections of the city.

Garbage bins like these are scattered all over Mandaue City. Kudos to Mayor Ouano! :okay:

Because the Cebu Business Park lots were already sold out, the Ayala Group of Companies, which developed the park, is now interested in acquiring the adjacent lots in Barrio Luz in order to expand development.
That's cool so that the CBP Skyline will really grow! :okay:
