Natimingan gyud namo nga nagmeeting ang mayor sa mga locals sa barangay officials, mga operators og mananagat..mga stakeholders kay mubisita na daw si Tita Gwen mao nga ilaha gyud gidalidali og draft ang ordinance para sa pagoperate sa maong acitivity. I think within the next few weeks, maimplement na ang bagong guidelines which is good. CEBU CITY -- As Sinulog 2012 opened, a monsignor appealed for secular fiesta activities to be kept “decent, wholesome” and free of politicking.

Msgr. Roberto Alesna, who was the main celebrant in the mass at the opening salvo Friday at the Basilica del Sto. Niño, said he will continue praying that all officials will be at peace with each other.

The popular Sinulog festival attracts both performers and politicians each year.

A parade that gave a glimpse of the Sinulog grand parade followed the mayor’s announcement. The parade proceeded from the Basilica to Fuente Osmeña rotunda and ended at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

People on the streets couldn’t help but take pictures of the 12 contestants of the Miss Cebu 2012 in their cocktail dresses. The 16 sports cars that the reigning and aspiring beauty titlists rode drew attention as well.

Bag-o lang ko niabot gikan sa Oslob. Nibiya mi dire sa Cebu gahapon sa alas 4:00 sa kaadlawon ug niabot mi didto sa Bangcogon, Oslob, Cebu about 7:00AM. After breakfast kay niadto mi sa Kalin-ay, Oslob kay tua didto ang nindot nga waterfalls ug after lunch ni-round south mi ug nibita sa waterfalls didto sa Santander, Samboan ug Ginatilan then balik sa Oslob ug didto nag-overnight. Usa sa among tuyo kay ang pagtan-aw sa "toke" or whale shark pero giingnan mi sa mangingisda sa Bangcogon nga sa buntag sayo ra ni sila mopatim-aw. Ang Bangcogon kay sikbit nga barangay sa Tan-awan diin naa makita ang whale shark. Istorya pud nila nga basin lisod itan-aw adtong panahona kay naa pud si Gwen. So naka decide mi nga inig ka sunday morning na mi moadto.

Ganinang buntag sayo mi niadto pero makita nimo sa ibabaw sa Tan-awan nga pwerting daghana na sa mga tawo. Nilevel up gyud ang mga performances this year, both sa Lalawigan and Dakbayan but I noticed nga nishift ang interest kay last year, mas interesting ang elementary contingents but this year, mas tight ang competition sa high school. It could be because sa Top 5 sa Lalawigan Elementary last year ang champion ra ang niperform this year. (San Roque Elementary School, they ended up 3rd this year) Sa Top 5 sa Dakbayan Elementary last year, ang 5th placer ra ang niperform balik this year. (City Central School, they ended up 4th this year). Bag-o ang mga nidaog sa elementary, wala'y challenge, wala'y pressure from the previous winners.

kinahanglan i-organize nis LGU ang mananagat og tudlo-an sa insakto nga pag guide, safety og pagabi-abi sa turista og ang saktong paggalam sa maong mananap og sa iyang puloy-anan... dako ning ikatabang sa dugang livelihood sa mga ordinaryong mananagat sa lugar! dili insakto nga mga dagkog taeng mga datu og politiko ra pod ang dakong mopahimolos ani... angay pod nga ilimit ang mga taw sa pag-duaw sa maong mga balyenang iho, aron dili sila matugaw pag-ayo nga makahatag na hinuon nilag stress, they live in the wilderness baya, the area should be preserved as such..aron dili ni maguba og madaut ilang paboritong sibsibanan og du-awanan... careful study on the effects of too much people and tourism sa maong lugar og sa behavior sa maong mananap, aron mamaayo pagkamanage nga molungtad pa kini sa dugay nga panahon ang maong aktibidad sa turismo sa sugbo! Naa na mi mga kauban sa grupo nga nakatan-aw sa whale shark before sa pag-adto sa governor. Wala sila kasugat anang entrance fee ug moabang lang sila ug sakayan nga tag P200 lang. Kaso lang sa ilang obserbar ang mga tawo ingon man ang mga mananagat kay ilang hikapon ug kon dili man gani hapakon o' sikaran ang butanding. Segun sa estorya sa mga mangingisda didto nga delicado lang kun hikapon ang ikog ini. Pero kun basehan nato sa mga video ug pictures kay ilang gipasakitan ang whaleshark. Nahasagmuyo si Doc Amores ini. In fact sa Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 issue sa Suns-Star daily kay ni'comment' gyud siya. Ingon ni Doc Amores nga sa una kini nga isda kay diha sa Hilutungan Channel makit-an pero nibalhin sa dihang gipaagian na kini sa dagkong mga barko. Nadisturbo sila. Kining whaleshark sa Oslob kay asset ni sa Cebu. Gawas nga ang sa Donsol, Sorsogon nga ang whale shark pangitaon pa sa lawod ang tubig didto dili pud crystal clear. Sulti pa sa usa ka marine biologist ug professor sa USC, si Joey Gatus, nga nindot tan-awon ang whale shark didto sa Southern Leyte sa may Limasawa - Panaon area kay clear kaayo ang tubig. Hinuon dili pa niya ma'compare' ang diri sa Oslob kay wala man siya kakuyog namo. By the way, Joey Gatus is the president of our group, Aquatic Cebu Enthusiasts ug si Doc Amores is a professional diver and our affiliate member. He specialized in diving underground rivers like the Hinatuan Enchanted river and the unfathomable Casili spring of Balamban, Cebu. Wa pa nila matugkad ang giladmon sa Casili spring.

We were there last Friday, January 6. I think it was the day before the Guv's visit mao nga nagmeeting ang mayor with the stakeholders (mananagat, operators, owners of the resort, barangay officials) so the ordinance will be discussed and approved. From what I remember, the ordinance covered some of these points:

1. Profit sharing scheme: Whaleshark viewing association (wala pa may ngalan ang association) was to get 60% of the ticket fees, 30% sa barangay and 10% sa town.

2. Tickets will only be sold at the "briefing center" with 3 copies (sa association, sa barangay, sa LGU). This briefing center will be constructed by the municipality, as well as the printing of the tickets. The municipality will also shoulder the uniforms of the tour operators and boat men, the lifevests, the snorkels, masks and fins etc. for uniformity.

3. Butangan og buoya ang "whaleshark watching area/zone. No motorized boats will be permitted to enter the area, kato ra ang paddle bancas.

4. No. of persons will be 6 per shark at a time (so it will be only 12 if there are 2 sharks and so on). And each batch will only be allowed 20 minutes of observation (including swimming with them).

5. Touching the sharks is not allowed. Swimmers should maintain at least 2-meter distance from the shark.

6. 300 ang entrance fee (inclusive of the boat rental) but exclusive of the gears. Price would be cheaper for Oslobanons.

7. The "association" of operators would be open to all interested nga mananagat sa dapit kay aron walay suyaay nga unya naay muhimo og bati ngadto sa mga whaleshark or toki/toke.


When we went there naay ubayubay mga tawo, cguro 2 groups of divers, 1 family of europeans, 1 group of 4 koreans, 1 group of japanese divers, and another group of divers from Siquijor (mga puti sad) nga nag angkla lang sa duol, 1 group of young Cebuanos and Cebuanas (gikan sa city). But this was a working day so I was fearful imagining what it'd be like on the coming weekends, especially when it's Sinulog and a lot would make side trips to Oslob for this!

Mao to nga gidalidali og implement and ordinance. Nagexpect na gyud ko nga magkaguliyang gyud ang tanan in the coming days. Wala pa gani ko kabalo og unsa pod ang isulti ni Tita Gwen sa next day for the side of the province!.

Nagkacomplicate ang mga butang kay daghan na kaayo ug players! I can only hope that HUMAN GREED will be set aside, and we all come up with a win win solution.

What should be placed above all, is the protection of these gentle giants, kay wala gyud ning tanan kung wala na sila diha. Kung manghawa na nuon sila tungod sa kagubot diha, magminghoy gyud tang tanan hilabi na silang mga locals didto nga mao untay dako nga makabenefisyo sa sitwasyon.

Police to deploy 3T cops along parade route, CCSC grounds

OVER 100 police personnel deployed inside the Cebu City Sports Complex helped make yesterday’s Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan successful, Cebu City Police Office Director Melvin Ramon Buenafe said.

Buenafe said that with over a hundred police officers inside the complex, there was no report of any incident in yesterday’s activity.

Outside the complex, almost 200 police officers were also deployed for police visibility.

“On Jan. 15, we will triple the number of police officers in the entire city,” Buenafe said.

Almost 3,000 police officers are expected to be stationed in different areas in Metro Cebu for the Sinulog celebration on Sunday.

Guv, Argao to feature ‘torta’ in Sunday’s grand parade

CEBU Gov. Gwen Garcia will dance with Argao’s La Torta Festival dancers during the Sinulog Grand Parade on Sunday.

She will wear her Spanish-inspired Filipiniana gown by Cebuano designer Cary Santiago.

Garcia said dancing during the grand parade is her yearly expression of her devotion to the Sto. Niño and of her gratitude for sparing Cebu from natural disasters.

Torta, a local cake made of local materials which Argao is famous for, was first introduced as a snack item for church construction workers during the Spanish times.

Garcia chose to dance with the Argao group, a guest performer. The contingents from Carcar City and Madridejos are joining as contestants after winning in the Garbo sa Sugbo as grand champion and second place winner, respectively.

Rama’s last-minute preparations

CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama walked the 5.1-kilometer stretch of the Sinulog 2012 carousel route last Friday night and jotted down all the things that need to be done before the grand parade on Sunday.

The mayor saw some obstructions on Osmeña Blvd. and New Imus Road, which may cause chokepoints during the festival.

He urged all stakeholders, particularly the police, to help make the Sinulog 2012 festivities meaningful and successful.

The mayor reiterated his appeal to all the Cebuanos, as well as local and foreign tourists, to also do their share.

Thousands of revelers are expected to arrive in Cebu City this week to attend the fluvial and foot processions of the image of the Sto. Niño on Jan. 14 and the Sinulog 2012 grand parade the following day.

Except for item no. 4, ang uban nga item kay gidiscuss sa akoa adtong tawo nga naka ID sa munisipyo. In fact iya ko gipakita adtong "anchor block" nga hinimo sa concrete nga gibutangan ug migimaw nga ligid sa truck kay adto ihigot ang boya. Confused lang ko kon moingon nga 6 ka tawo sa kada whale shark ug kon 2 ka whaleshark pwede 12 ka tawo. Good kon magbuwag ni sila. Another thing, 20 minutes sa kada batch of 12 pero considering sa gidaghanon sa tawo niadtong Sunday so naa gyud makaabot didto nga dili kakita sa whale shark. In fact mao ni ang apprehension sa uban nga naglinya. Last Saturday ug last Sunday (gahapon) usa ug the same shark na lang ang nitunga. Gisamokan na seguro sila. Delicado gyud nga mobiya ang whale shark sa lugar. Sulti pa sa mga taga didto nga karon panahona niduol ang whale shark bisan diha sa baybayon tungod kay gilawgan kay dili man season sa "uyap" or "uyabang" karon. Most likely dili na ni siya moduol kon naa nay daghan.

Dili na lang ta mokaon ug ginamos na uyap ani.... para modaghan ug whale shark dire sa ato...... :D

as stated ni sir @eskeryon nga iyang gi-interview nga local didto, about 10 years naman daw kuno na sila diha, unya gihilom lang, karon lang siya nabani-og.so, basin citizens na sila diha kay taud2x naman sila nag-stay..:D

Nganung nindut man kaayu makadala ug celebrate ang Cebu sa festivals? Dli lang kana, heartfelt, solemn, peaceful, ug soncere pajud ang pag.praise nato ni Sr.Sto.Nino. I can't help but differentiate rhis to the Feast for the Black Nazarene. Its not that I'm criticizing ha but doing it via tradition for tradition's sake is not that necessary. As long as maka.abut ang atong daku nga pagpasalamat sa atong giampoan ug nga mas mu.prevail ang PAGPASALAMAT UG PAG.ACKNOWLEDGE SA IYANGNABUHAT kaysa PAG.PANGAYU UG GRASYA PARA SA ATONG KAUALINGON, ok naman unta kaayu. Sulti pa sa mga taga didto nga karon panahona niduol ang whale shark bisan diha sa baybayon tungod kay gilawgan kay dili man season sa "uyap" or "uyabang" karon. Most likely dili na ni siya moduol kon naa nay daghan.

No terror threats in Cebu for Sinulog

POLICE assured Sinulog security preparations are in place and that they’ve received no reported terrorist threats, similar to what provoked the suspension of cellphone signals during a religious feast in Manila yesterday.

More than 10,000 security personnel, including the police and army, will be mobilized throughout the parade route.

Buenafe stressed out that drunkenness in public during the Sinulog revelry will be prohibited.

Meanwhile, the whole province was also placed under red alert in preparation for the festivities.

Last Friday, a 21-day gun ban was enforced in Cebu City. All permits to carry firearms outside the residence are suspended, as approved by PNP Director General Nicanor Bartolome last Thursday. The gun ban will be lifted after Jan. 25.

CEBU CITY (Updated 2 p.m.) - The Philippine Long Distance Company (PLDT) has set up free and unlimited Wi-Fi zones in strategic areas in this city in time for the Sinulog festival.

The PLDT Wi-Fi Zone is a value-added and premium service given to PLDT and MyDSL subscribers to give them unlimited Internet outside their home.

In partnership with the Cebu City Government, the PLDT Wi-Fi Zones have been set up for free starting today, Tuesday, until January 15 to maximize the Sinulog festival experience.

The PLDT said the service may be accessed in Gen. Maxilom Avenue, Gorordo to Fuente Osmeña Circle, Osmeña Boulevard, portions of N. Bacalso Avenue and P. del Rosario, Cebu City Sports Center, Cebu City Hall, Provincial Captol, Magellan's Cross and Plaza Independencia and many other establishments.

True! If I may ask, kinsa ang source sa info sa Y101 na newsflash?
Actually, when I was there last Jan.6 (Fri), we saw an individual with a somewhat large scar/injury near the lower part of its dorsal fin (sa boko-boko dapit) and we also wondered about the cause of the injury. These whales also get injured by other factors in the wild so it was possible. However, injury to these animals caused by the whaleshark watching activity should be very alarming. Dapat gyud ning mabantayan. Naa pod diay koy i-add sa ilahang natuki bahin aning toke (hehe) sa ilahang meeting last Friday, and it was about sanctions and punishments which was covered by the ordinance. Imprisonment is possible for up to 3 or 6 months (not so sure), but I am not sure how well this will be implemented.

Those are things that are indeed being entertained right now by the people of Oslob, and Cebu. I hope everything will work out for the best, but then again, the protection of the animals should come first.

Balik-Cebu launched to welcome balikbayans

MORE balikbayans are expected to arrive this week in time for the Sinulog celebration, officials of the Balik-Cebu program said.

Balik-Cebu program chairperson Tetta Baad said they are expecting over 300 balikbayans to arrive in Cebu starting on Jan. 10 from California, Las Vegas and Seattle and other countries.

Baad said the committee has already planned several activities for balikabayans, including a welcome ceremony at the Mactan Cebu International Airport.

The Balik-Cebu program aims to offer tourists an “unparalleled Cebu experience.” The program organizes chartered flights to entice returnees to come home for the Sinulog celebration.

“This (program) provides an impetus of enticing tourists to come to Cebu especially during the Sinulog celebration. The Balik-Cebu program has contributed to the increase of tourism arrivals in Cebu,” Rama said.

Coast Guard bares rules for fluvial participants

MORE than 60 Coast Guard personnel will be deployed during the fluvial procession on Jan. 14 and safety guidelines were issued to ensure the security of participants.

The following are pro*hibited during the dif*ferent segments of the parade: liquor, firecrackers, prohibited drugs, firearms and any deadly weapons.

Cebu Coast Guard Com*mander Rolando Pun*zalan instructed participating vessels to register with the Maritime Industry Authority.

All participating vessels should have enough life jackets for passengers.

All participating vessels should not dock at Pier 1 ahead of the main vessel except for the escort vessel.

i was able to try and see the whale sharks last Dec 30... at that time, wala pa tong new rules so medyo gubot pa pero mas barato siya.. one of my friends just swam his way into the feeding area (its just about 30 meters from the shore) so basically he didnt had to pay for anything. the resort's boatt queue was quite long so nangita na lang mi ug kolorom na fisherman nya akong gi sabot ug P100 per person para dad-on mi nadto sa lawom.

Together with Pyroworks and the Sinulog Foundation, SM City Cebu will stage the 4th Sinulog Pyrofest competition on January 14 beginning at 8pm fronting The Northwing. Eight competitors from all over the country will participate in the competition. First prize winner will bring home P150,000, while second and third placers will win P125,000 and P100,000 respectively. Non-winning teams will also receive P50,000 each. The entries will be judged according to the fireworks’ beauty, style, timing, and audience impact. A demo show by Pyroworks International, Inc. will happen at the end of the competition.

Placer, Masbate delegates join FI, Sinulog-based categories

SINULOG 2012 free interpretation champion Placer, Masbate returns to the competition not only to defend their title but to join the Sinulog-Based category as well.

Placer will be the first contingent to join both categories, said Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director Ricky Ballesteros.

It was after a dream that Mayor Joshur Lanete decided to join the Sinulog-based category, after winning back-to-back in the free interpretation category in the three years the fourth-class municipality of Masbate joined the competition.

On Sunday, the entire Placer, Masbate will be glued to their television sets to watch the Sinulog.

“Everything stops in Masbate. It’s like a (Manny) Pacquiao fight where crime rate is zero,” Lanete said in jest.

Placer will also feature eight-year-old Louie Osable, their youngest dancer, who will play a monkey. It will be the first time that Osable will dance on stage with thousands of spectators.

Placer shipped about 900 people to Cebu City for the Sinulog with two contingents.

VICE President Jejomar Binay has confirmed his attendance at the Sinulog grand parade this Sunday.

Binay is among three “very important persons” (VIPs) whom Rama has invited to the Sinulog, along with President Benigno Aquino III and Undersecretary Odette Ong, but both have yet to confirm attendance.

Other national officials who want to attend the event can connect with the Office of the Mayor for VIP tickets.

As standard operating procedure, officials will not be allowed to give speeches during the Sinulog, unless it’s the President, and if he arrives after the mass and before the start of the grand parade.

About four million revelers are expected to grace this Sunday’s festivities, said Police Coordinating Advisory Council (Pcac) presiding officer Eugene Elizalde. Last year, the Cebu City Police Office estimated about 3.5 million revelers.

Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director Ricky Ballesteros said 50 contingents have signed up for the Sinulog, two contingents more than last year.

There will be 27 contingents competing in the free interpretation category and 23 for the Sinulog-based category.

(CNN) – The global research department of HSBC has released a report predicting the rise and fall of the world’s economies in the next 40 years.

The world’s top economy in 2050 will be China, followed by the United States. No surprises there – since China’s reforms in the 1980s, economists have said it’s not a question of if, but when, China’s collective economic might will top the U.S.

But among the smaller, developing nations, there are several surprises by HSBC prognosticators:

* By 2050, the Philippines will leapfrog 27 places to become the world’s 16th largest economy. :banana::banana:

* Peru’s economy, growing by 5.5% each year, jumping 20 places to 26th place – ahead of Iran, Columbia and Switzerland. Other strong performers will be Egypt (up 15 places to 20th), Nigeria (up nine places to 37th), Turkey (up six spots to 12th), Malaysia (up 17 to 21st) and the Ukraine (up 19 to 45th).

* Japan’s working population will contract by a world-top 37% in 2050 – yet HSBC economists predict it will still be toward the top performing economies, dropping only one spot to the 4th largest economy. India will jump ahead of Japan to 3rd on the list.

* The big loser in the next 40 years will be advanced economies in Europe, HSBC predicts, who will see their place in the economic pecking order erode as working population dwindles and developing economies climb. Only five European nations will be in the top 20, compared to eight today. Biggest drop will be felt northern Europe: Denmark to 56th ( -29), Norway to 48th ( -22), Sweden to 38th (-20) and Finland to 57th (-19).

“If we step away from the cyclicality, there are two ways economies can grow; either add more people to the production line via growth in the working population, or make each individual more productive,” the report says.

In other words, demographics – the size of your working population – along with the opportunities to flex that muscle help determine long-term economic trends. Big factors on the back half of that equation: Education opportunities, democratic governments or strong rule of law (a caveat that explains China and Saudi Arabia’s high placement).

“We openly admit that behind these projections we assume governments build on their recent progress and remain solely focused on increasing the living standards for their populations,” the report says. “Of course, this maybe an overly glossy way of viewing the world.”

Chief factors that may derail economies moving forward, the report says: War, energy consumption constraints, climate change, and growing barriers to population movement across borders.

Not so good: Dili gyud kaayo ko kauyon sa mga signs bitaw, mura og hinimo namo sa elementary school. Ug from a design perspective, mu agree ko kang @Zub, bisan og sabaan kaayo to siya bahin ani (haha). The Plaza has lost much of its charm, ug it has lost its sense of place and importance. Although naemphasize na karon ang Fort San Pedro, nawala pod halos completely and significance sa Plaza og ang uban structures na naa didto.

CEBU, Philippines - As part of its thrust to provide complementary facilities to service the growing number of domestic and foreign tourists in Cebu, the Islands Group opened the first tourism complex in Cebu located at the center of the City’s heritage district in downtown called “Sinulog Square.”

The establishment which is situated in a 1,800 square-meter property along Magallanes Street, near the Magellan’s Cross landmark, will house several tourism related establishments, with the Islands Souvenirs as its anchor store.

“It would be a one-stop-shop for tourists that will provide what they need, souvenirs, Cebu delicacies, ticketing office, walking-tour guides, travel and tour information, and others,” said Islands Group president and chief executive officer (CEO) Jay Aldeguer.

The “Sinulog Square” was conceptualized out of the need to provide a facility in downtown, specifically within the what is informally called as the City’s “heritage district”, which starts from Parian, down the line of Museums located on the way to the Sto. Niño and Cathedral churches, Fort San Pedro, Magellan’s Cross, which are the must-see for Cebu whether for domestic or foreign visitors.

“This area should be provided with decent facility that will serve our visitors,” said Aldeguer saying that at this point, the company is still studying what type of other establishments that will be offered in the “Tourism Complex” aside from the basic services related to travel and tours.

Initially, aside from its Islands Souvenir anchor store, the “Sinulog Square” houses, a bazaar called “So-ok, So-ok”, cultural show, and Sinulog dance performances.

According to Aldeguer, the cultural show and Sinulog dance performances will be offered by the complex all year round, not only during the Sinulog Festival time.

“We thought of naming the complex as ‘Sinulog Square’, because the place is a heritage area, Sinulog celebration is more prominent and it is directly link with Cebu,” he said adding that celebration of Sinulog continues not only during every January, but its a year-round celebration.

At the second floor of the complex, the company will also build a 45-room hotel for its Islands Stay Hotel expansion, Aldeguer said.

He said there is so much potential in putting investments within Cebu’s tourism landmark, more so in the “Heritage District” of Cebu, which is known as a “must-see’ destination once in Cebu.

“There is so much potential for tourism related investment in this area. We are still studying on what more we could offer in the Sinulog Square, as we got a 20 year-lease of the property,” Aldeguer said.

Islands Group, one of the most active local group of companies of which investments are focused mainly on developing tourism-related services and products, including the Islands Banca Cruise, Islands Shuttle Service, Islands Stay Hotel chain, Talima Adventure Park, among others.

More than ever, Aldeguer believes that this is the time that Cebu should seriously maximize its potential for tourism by providing more choices, and services to tourists, specifically that some of the province’s economic drivers are being threatened such as exports, and recently the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO).

Tourism on the other hand, remains to be strong for Cebu, and also poised for a promising future. However, this could be given utmost and careful attention, by not being complacent saying, Cebu should offer something more, something new, and exciting for tourists, both first time travelers, as well are returning visitors.

Every year, he said Sinulog related sales is improving. Regardless of global economic uncertainty, Sinulog Festival still attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. In fact, balikbayan visitors arriving in Cebu this year, those that only registered to the “Balik Cebu” program have increased by close to 100 percent. (FREEMAN)

“If we step away from the cyclicality, there are two ways economies can grow; either add more people to the production line via growth in the working population, or make each individual more productive,” the report says.

In other words, demographics – the size of your working population – along with the opportunities to flex that muscle help determine long-term economic trends. Big factors on the back half of that equation: Education opportunities, democratic governments or strong rule of law (a caveat that explains China and Saudi Arabia’s high placement).

“We openly admit that behind these projections we assume governments build on their recent progress and remain solely focused on increasing the living standards for their populations,” the report says. “Of course, this maybe an overly glossy way of viewing the world.”

Chief factors that may derail economies moving forward, the report says: War, energy consumption constraints, climate change, and growing barriers to population movement across borders.

Palma marks first anniversary

FOR Archbishop Jose Palma, the first year of leading the Catholic flock in the Archdiocese of Cebu was a time for meditation on the vocation of pastoral ministry.

“I feel blessed with so many zealous workers from clergy, religious and lay faithful,” he said in a text message.

Today marks the first anniversary of Palma’s installation as the fourth archbishop of Cebu.

The last 12 months were eventful for Palma, who was elected president of the influential Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, the highest position for a Filipino prelate in the country.

Rain spares 'Walk with Mary'

CEBU CITY (Updated 8:33 a.m.) -- Thousands of Marian devotees joined the “Walk with Mary” Friday dawn as bad weather spared the foot penitential procession.

Heavy rains poured Cebu City before Friday dawn due to the diffused tail-end of a cold front, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

However, rains stop just before the procession at 4 a.m. from Fuente Osmeña going to the Basilica del Sto. Niño.

Devotees carried with them lit candles and images of the Our Lady of Guadalupe and even images of the Sto. Niño while praying the rosary and singing church songs during the procession.

The carrosa bearing the religious image of the Our Lady of Guadalupe took more than an hour to traverse the one-kilometer distance between the church and Fuente Osmeña.

Kini nga exposure mora ug gamay na lang ang kulang sa irog sa imong location to the left (or i-crop lang). Kon ang imong tuyo aron ma spell-bound ang observer sa alignment sa roof tops sa house leading to that chinese roof (Taoist temple?), IMO. Since kana rang Chinese temple roof ang sticking out of all the roofs, ug mahimo i-crop ang imong pic to place that temple about one-third of the picture frame from the right. Payts na kaayo!

It's a man-made lake! It depends on what you're looking for in a lake? Malubog Dam used to supply process water to ACMDC in it's heydays. The surrounding lake shores are dotted with planted crops, there are people who made fish pens to grow some tilapia, etc. (not sure if they still are, it's been a long time for me). There are freshwater fishes to catch (if you know fishing by hook and line)

This morning’s Sinulog Fluvial Procession viewed from the sky as it passes the first Mandaue-Mactan Bridge shortly before 8:00 a.m. More than 135 boats joined the annual parade to mark the crossing of the Mactan Channel by the Santo Niño de Cebu and the Virgin of Guadalupe, from an overnight vigin at the St. Joseph’s Shrine in Mandaue City. A Pontifical Mass followed the procession at 9:00 a.m. at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.

CEBU CITY -- The lead dancer of Lumad Basakanun, an award-winning Sinulog contingent, won this year’s search for the Sinulog Festival Queen.

Apriel D. Smith of Barangay Basak, Cebu City bested 13 other candidates vying for the festival queen title Friday night. She also won four special awards, namely: Miss PLDT, Best in Sinulog Festival Costume, Best Festival Costume, and Best Solo Performer.

She took home P50,000 for winning the search, aside from the amounts she received for winning the special awards.

Niño to wear his Sunday’s best

CEBU’S beloved little king will be dressed in his Sunday best today, the eve of his feast day.

The centuries-old Sto. Niño image will be wearing his red cape and velvet vestments embroidered with gold lily buds and flowers, a crown bedecked with jewels, a pair of boots and gloves made of gold.

The wooden statue was given by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan to Hara Amihan, who was named Juana after her baptism. The Ecce Homo or the sculpture representing the suffering Christ was given to Rajah Humabon, who was later called Carlos.

Clothing items included in the official wardrobe are a white velvet alb, similar to that worn by priests, undergarments, red velvet bloomers, and a white undershirt.

“It usually takes half a day to dress up the Sto. Niño because there are prayers recited,” he said.

CEBU CITY -- The weather bureau advised the public to bring umbrellas during Saturday’s grand penitential procession.

Thousands are expected to join the procession that will start at the Basilica del Sto. Niño at 1:30 p.m.

Participants can expect cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorm, said May Casilagan, weather specialist at Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s (Pagasa’s) Mactan, Cebu station.

A tail end of a cold front is affecting the Visayas, bringing cloudy skies and rains, she said.

Devotees brave heat for fluvial parade

CEBU CITY (Updated 10 a.m.) -- Hundreds of devotees braved the scorching heat of the sun to join and witness the sea procession Saturday morning in honor of Our Lady of the Rule and Sr. Sto Niño.

Over a hundred registered sea-going vessel, including rubber boats owned by various government agencies, joined the parade that left the Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City around 8 a.m.

The fluvial parade arrived at the Pier 1 in Cebu City past 9 a.m.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama and Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia who both joined the parade lauded the Cebuanos and non-Cebuanos who woke up early in the morning just to show their love and devotion to the Sto. Niño.
