The river coming from Cantipla of Cebu City is one of the water system that provide water to the lake. The lake could be seen also if you will pass through the Transcentral Highway specially if you are near the crossing of Tabunan

It's a man-made lake! It depends on what you're looking for in a lake? Malubog Dam used to supply process water to ACMDC in it's heydays. The surrounding lake shores are dotted with planted crops, there are people who made fish pens to grow some tilapia, etc. (not sure if they still are, it's been a long time for me). There are freshwater fishes to catch (if you know fishing by hook and line)
Can the water there be re-tapped again, this time by MCWD for Cebu? It looks bigger than Buhisan Reservoir though.

I guess this is connected at ABSCBN Cebu. The gap between 12nn and 3:15pm is perhaps due to ASAP.

With technology, yes it could be used. Nowadays water even from septic tanks could be reused. Malubog is a man made lake on the sense that Atlas Mining dump their wastewater here. Chemical concentration is quite high here. It is called Malubog because the water is very murky during the operation of Atlas mining. According to people surrounding the lake about 2/3 of the depth here is mud. When Atlas Mining ceased operation the lake becomes clearer however this time Atlas Mining is now undertaken by Carmen Copper.

There was a move before to tap Malubog Dam water source (I think during Tommy's term) but what MCWD did was pushed thru with its Jaclupan weir.

Any stored freshwater source can be tapped. It just need an infiltration bay and a system of transporting water to where it is needed. Remember, the dam itself is a 200 hectares. I know for a fact (from my friends in USC Water Research Center before) that USC did a 1-year study on this issue and the figure I gathered was something around 100,000 cubic meters per day, on average is feasible. Located high up in the mountains, a gravity delivery will be most likely; you don't have to mind about the price of energy as you'll just need just a few kWs for the water conditioning/filtering, etc.

Almost 2 million join solemn procession in Cebu

CEBU CITY (Updated) -- Close to two million devotees of the child Jesus flocked to the Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino Saturday and joined the 6.8-kilometer foot penitential procession that lasted for almost six hours.

The 6.8-kilometer procession, which usually takes four hours, lasted for almost six hours this year after it was stalled in eight points within the procession route.

The crowd this year is almost double compared to the crowd estimate of at least one million in 2011.

FOR Cebuanos, the Sinulog Festival is a time for worship. For foreigners studying in Cebu, the festival is the best time to experience Cebu’s culture and heritage.

“This is very new to me,” said Flora Kwon, a 15-year-old Korean student at the Cebu International School (CIS). “It’s something to learn about Cebu.”

“This is my first time to experience Sinulog,” said Kate McCormack, a 15-year-old Australian student who came to Cebu six months ago. “The energy is amazing. There’s a unique atmosphere.”

“This is the biggest and most historical celebration in Cebu,” Fischer said.

She said yesterday’s Sinulog performances were “fantastic.”

Crowding lang siguro. Wa man lagi problema ang akong Globe (re signal sa mga cell phones). Ni-call ko sa ba'y, okay man. Daghan lang gyud siguro ang subscribers sa Sun during Sinulog kay daghan man ug perks. Imagine bisan ug 1M lang ang na-puno nga simultaneous calls/text msgs above the normal trafiic, huot gyud sila.

Ma'y'g pareho sa Black Nazarene procession nga gipawong ang mga cellular phone repeater sites! Besides, wa may gi-report nga bomb threat.

I was right, the Luma este Lumad Basakanon will take the 4th place and they did. If I'm not mistaken, they took the 3rd place last year. Hmm...There's a pattern going on here!

Luma jud, nothing new. Good thing they changed their costumes gani this year. They were out of the top 5 last year, not even the top 10. That was an eye opener for them, nga we as an audience always crave for fresh concepts and innovations. Their choreography was basically the same this year and since naka4th place sila balik, hope they realize nga it takes total reinvention every year to grab the mostly-coveted championship title yearly as more and more out-of-towners gain interest to join.

YESTERDAY’S Sinulog grand parade was watched by foreigners, both dignitaries and tourists alike.

It was his first time to watch the Sinulog but Consul General Zhang Wei Guo of the People’s Republic of China is planning to come back next year. “I had a good impression (of the Sinulog)…I’m very interested in the program,” he said.

Hallgeir Oersland, a 26-year-old Norwegian student, said he has never seen an event as colorful as Sinulog.

“What amazed me most about Sinulog is how skilled the performers are and how beautifully they arranged their dance,” -- Hallgeir Oersland, Norway

“Millions of people flocked the streets not only to have fun but also to show their dedication to Sto. Niño. It is hair-raising,”

FOR the eighth straight year, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia danced in yesterday’s Sinulog grand parade as a guest performer.

She played the role of a Spanish señorita and danced with the La Torta Festival contingent from Argao, Cebu.

For the governor, the exposure of the La Torta Festival was a recognition of the fact that Cebu’s towns now have their own festivals, unique to the towns and cities of the Province of Cebu.

She said Cebu has festivals in every town, which makes it deserving of the title “Festival Island.”

Cebu fiesta gathers 3 million

CEBU CITY -- Over three million people turned up for the Basilica masses and the Sinulog grand parade Sunday, and police and organizers thanked them for keeping the events orderly and safe.

Though rain interrupted the parade thrice, the crowds kept growing in the afternoon.

The parade started with a mass at the Cebu City Sports Center and ended, nearly 12 hours later, with a 30-minute grand finale and 10-minute fireworks display. The grand finale alone cost P2.5 million to stage.

Aside from Binay, among those spotted in the VIP section were Sens. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Jinggoy Estrada, former senators Miguel Zubiri and Francisco Tatad, and Representative Teddy Casiño.

SSC Cebu and the rest of SSC regionals started with their point and shoot camera. In case of SSC Cebu, they even started with a shared Panasonic Lumix single point and shoot camera for two to three years. As long as you can share your images here, that contributes a lot. :okay:

SIX Cebu mayors expressed their support for Senate Bill 42, which is aimed to declare 90 percent sales of businesses as taxable by the city or municipality where the factory, project office, plant or plantation is located.
City Mayors Valdemar Chiong (City of Naga), Aurelio Espinosa (Toledo City) and Celestino Martinez Jr. (Bogo), Mayors Democrito “Aljon” Diamante (Tuburan), Ricardo Ramirez (Medellin) and Ace Binghay (Balamban) said it will increase the income of the local government units (LGUs).

They said they are happy that Sen. Vicente Sotto III introduced the bill so their localities will be prioritized in the sharing of sales tax from investors who have existing business or for businesses that will locate in their towns and cities in the future.

Chiong said the City of Naga will benefit if Senate Bill No. 42 will be passed into law,considering that it is hosting the plant of Apo Cement Corp., which is selling cement products nationwide and its principal office is in Manila.
Toledo City, on the other hand, will benefit from the passage of the bill because it is hosting Carmen Copper Corp., a mining firm that is exporting copper and gold, but with principal office in Manila.
Bogo City will soon host Robinsons Mall, hence, Martinez said his administration will benefit if the bill is enacted into law.

Burglars take P1.7 million in Cebu sports center

CEBU CITY – The Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) and the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) lost at least P1.7 million after an unidentified culprit ransacked their offices.

The amount included the P880,000 that City Hall gave the SFI as a refund for the financial assistance that Sinulog organizers gave out-of-town contingents of last Sunday’s grand parade.

It also included the P750,000 of Victor Cuenco, the choreographer of the Culturang Placereño of Placer, Masbate, which won the grand prize in the Sinulog-based category.

Sorry but Sinulog may not be the biggest festival. The Rio Carnival last year had a whooping 4.9 million attendees! But with 3.8 million no doubt, we should still be on top of the list. Anyway, somebody should inform festivalpig.com about our festival.

But still, whether Sinulog is or isn't on the list, we still have a very fun and peaceful festival.

We should also expect Nat Geo to feature Fiesta Senyor in their magazine soon. Last Sunday, Brent, Nat Geo's photog had to go back to his hotel room with writer Paul even before 5 pm becase they had already taken 8000 pix on that day!

CEBU, Philippines - Before they could celebrate the success of Sinulog 2012, the organizers of the event became victims of a burglary and not less than P1.655 million was taken from the Sinulog Foundation Inc. office inside the Cebu City Sports Center.

Taken were the P880,000 cash refund from the city government, P7,000 administrative bonus of the Sports Center Administrative clerk, P10,000 petty cash, P8,000 proceeds from the sale of Sinulog tickets, a camera worth P9,000 and P750,000 talent fee of choreographer Victor Cuenco.

The incident was discovered by the utility worker, Rosita Velasquez, when she came back from cleaning the pool past 6 a.m.

The room was ransacked while the vault was wide open.

Ricky Ballesteros, executive director of the SFI and Sports Center manager, said that the incident must have happened between 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Ballesteros said they suspect it is an inside job because only a few people know that the cash of SFI was kept in the vault of the Sports Center office and not in the SFI office.

He said the culprit took advantage of the situation when everybody was tired from the just concluded Sinulog Grand Parade............

I think katong mga figures sa previous years kay "GRAND TOTAL" nato sa tanang activities for the whole Sinulog season kay klaro kaayo ang balita this year nga "record-breaking 3.8 million people in the Grand Parade in Sinulog's 32 year history". Ako mismo, this is my 4th year sa streets to experience the Sinulog and lahi ra ang kabaga sa duot sa mga tawo karon. 630am palang puno na ang mga kalsada. I'm even thinking if magshoot pa ko next year kay lisod na kaayo makakuha ug tarong nga shot sa mga contingents karon

^^ ang Sinulog man gud is both religious and cultural in nature maong daghan gyud ang mudagsa nga mga taw dili lang dinhi sa Cebu kundi sa tibuok Pilipinas and even in different parts of the world. IMO, the religious aspect is what keeps people coming back year after year in Sinulog because ang mga taw naay mga panaad or panata sa Snr. Sto. Nino(like the Black Nazarene in Quiapo) unlike other festivals nga concentrated ra sa cultural aspect so once nakaexperience na ang isa ka visitor/guest, tendency is the following year, they may skip. :)

....though i wasn't able to witness the competition....naa lng ko sa Basilica, i am kinda amazed and shocked every after the last novena mass naay sayaw, the Pit Senyor, I had goose bumps witnessing it,...especially on Saturday where we dance the pit Senyor for like an hour and with a matching fireworks display!.....I can say that now i have the faith of a Cebuano to Senyor Sto. Niño...PIT SENYOR

DOT planning ‘great Cebu sale’

TO DRAW in new markets to Cebu, the Department of Tourism (DOT) plans to entice travelers from neighboring countries to visit and shop in Cebu with a grand sale among local retailers.

DOT 7 Director Rowena Montecillo told Sun.Star Cebu that she plans to approach members of the Philippine Retailers Association to discuss plans to hold a grand sale in September, in celebration of tourism month.

Unlike regular mall-wide sales, Montecillo said they want to make this an annual event to keep visitors coming and offer them something to look forward to every year. She added that September is also the start of the country’s peak season for travelers.

btw, i read somewhere that the original (native) name of queen juana is Humamai.

Humamai was the wife of King Humabon of Cebu. When Ferdinand Magellan landed in Cebu, the queen embraced Christianity. Humamai was the first Filipina, Cebuana at that, who became a Christian in the entire Philippine Archipelago, and most probably the first native woman in the Far East who became a catholic.

IMO, Legaspi has nothing to add premium to our knowledge about Raha Humabon and Hara Amihan. He just came later during the time of Rajah Tupas.

i couldn't say whether or not legaspi had a hand in our present understanding of our very own history. after all, like everyone else here, i am but a receiver of nth-hand information. i guess we all just turn to history books written and re-written by people with various motives and ideologies. in the end, no one is still certain what the real facts are. i guess only humabon, pigafetta, and humamai/amihan know for sure. hehe
