I think, makagahin sila'g kantidad ani.

but i think it would be a bit frustrating for tourists who've been to sydney, KL, SG. and then when they go to cebu and realize that its nowhere near those cities in terms of being a "wonder city" (whats the criteria for this?). its just like a popularity contest and since we filipinos have a strong presence in the web or text (text capital of the world) then we most likely would win. but yeah i agree free promotion... but from what i've read its a bit expensive if you win that coz u need to dole out money to the "non-profit" company. and u need to pay a license fee so u can use the name "wonder city".

Pwede sad. ug kinsay naa sa top, mas daghan ang ni-click ug vote. Simple, no if's no but's! Ug lain pa ang naa sa top, sila gud ang top! Di man lisud sabton! Ang hubad anang hitabo-a, basta taga Cebu, mobati gyud sa ciudad sa Sugbo, bisan ug tua pa sa US of A o bien, sa Uropa ba, o sa uban pang lugar sa tibuok kalibotan!

kibaw sad bitaw ang turista kung gi unsa ang pamaagi sa vote, sa padaghanay man and what is important is, na ila ang Cebu... mao ra gyud na ang importante para nako. And for me, KL or SG is not even in the league of Wonder cities... just because of their scrapers? just bec they're rich?

this guy made a lot of videos mostly featuring cebu kay wala man sab silay kapaingnan kong mag film shoot sila. usa sa iyang mga observation kaning pataka lang ug labay sa basura during sinulog. ngari kon mag sponsor ka ug aktividades, magbutang gyud ka ug mga trash bins nga butanganan sa basura unya sa mga dumudoong. the sinulog foundation should take this into consideration to stage a green sinulog that people are aware kun asa ilabay ang basura ug dili maghuwat unya sa street cleaner the next day.
i like most of his videos kay at least mora ug fair assessment sa atong pinalanggang cebu but he is here as a film student. siguro mas cheaper dinha compared kon ari siya mo eskuwela sa diri sa hollywood or new york.

bitaw they need to improve that song bago nila kantahon sa prime time television. mao mana diri kon ang interviewhon sa tv mag sulti ug iningles pero dili klaro sa native speakers of english ilang butangan ug subtitle kay duna biyay variation sa accents labi na ug asian, hispanic or taga africa ang mo sulti ug iningles. kana kay ilang purpose is to be well known boy band singers, ilaha gyud nang perfectohon ilang sounds sa dili pa nila i presentar sa public.
like you said it was not their best recording yet, so maayo pa wala nalang nila kantaha usa. kay ang audience mismo was technically reacting on a cue klarix kaayo.

leylander March 24th, 2012, 07:40 PM bai hope you are not talking here about city incapability to manage these things...yes partly they are part of it but honestly as a whole it is now everyone's attitude of doing its share...parehas ra gud na sa atong balay kong tanan manglimpyo hapsay gyud kaayo tanan kay nagpakabana man pero kon gani wala aw hugaw pas tanang hugaw...:ohno::ohno::ohno:
honestly, yes. I AM talking about the city's inadequacies and incapacities. i know a lot of people have been doing their share. I can personally say that I've been doing MY share to make this city clean and safe and 'good-enough' for both locals and visitors. I use the sky-walk when I cross the street. I don't give to streetkids. i keep my room, our house, and our yard clean. I even join cleanliness drives. lol.
but don't you think all of these would be put to waste if the government does very little or nothing at all? we can only do so much for the welfare of everyone else. there's a sector tasked to take care of these things. it's called the government. yet, despite this fact, many people choose to lend a hand. to make things BETTER.
but if I were a tourist and the first thing that I see when I step off the coaster to see the famed Magellan's Cross was a bunch of dirty naked kids rolling in the pavement or selling rosaries and sampaguita or begging for coins, I'd definitely wonder where the picturesque city i saw in brochures and travel books went.
i know the current government can do so much better than what they are doing now. especially when their platform takes pride in cleanliness and restoration.
let's just say, I'm almost too tired to hope things will become better. I know I'm being too pessimistic. but i know, too, that I am not alone.
Sleepwalker March 24th, 2012, 07:47 PM ^^@ley, there is no need for a tourist to go to Magellan's cross in order to see the real picture. All he needs to do is to be very keen observant sa estado ato airport... :D But don't you think, it's quite unfair to single out the current admin for this? These all messes did not just happen overnight... :D
Speaking of airport, naa kuno study study ang DOTC para sa new terminal. 126,000sqm kuno ni, mora'g Ayala Center Cebu kadako diay.

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) is now conducting a feasibility study for the construction of a new 126,000-square meter international terminal building at the Mactan Cebu International Airport.
DOTC director for planning Jim Feliciano, in a press statement, said that the project is now being reviewed by the department.
Feliciano said that the existing terminal building which currently caters to both domestic and international passengers will be used for domestic passengers once the new facility is completed.
He said that part of the plan is to upgrade the airport’s cargo terminal building and parking and curbside facilities. This project is under DOTC’s Public-Private Partnership Projects (PPP).
Feliciano added that the P5.8-billion project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership scheme and expected to serve approximately 10 million passengers annually once completed.
In July last year, the Korea International Cooperation Agency submitted and completed a feasibility study on the new passenger terminal building to the National Economic Development Board for approval and PPP implementation.
According to the DOTC website, the project involves the re-development or upgrading of the passenger terminal building and other essential facilities to cater to international and domestic airline passenger demand and a new cargo terminal.
The implementation schedule is from 2012 to 2015. Bidding will be within the first quarter of 2012 and awarding of contract will be by fourth quarter of 2012.
Robert Go, director of the Philippine Retailers Association and chairman of the Economic Development Committee of the Regional Development Council (RDC), said that airport expansion is long overdue.
“We cannot increase our tourism drive without the infrastructure. We cannot dream of catching up with Thailand getting 20 million tourists per year. We are happy with three million. We should make our airport world-class. It’s good we have this project,” Go said.
Eric Mendoza, president of the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that the airport expansion will address the rapid and steady growth of Cebu’s tourism as well as in Central Visayas especially that Cebu is strategically the center of the Philippines.
“Cebu is the favorite tourism hub and destination for tourist and commerce being centrally located plus the efforts of the local government units of continuing international exposure and promotions. The expansion is definitely a must to be done for a sustainable growth and development for Cebu,” Mendoza said. — (FREEMAN)

the only reason why i mentioned the current administration is because mao man gud na ilang sigeg mention nga maoy focus. cleanliness, beautification, restoration, ug asphalt storm.

Yep. Metro Gaisano has recently rebranded their Supermarket and Department Store.
Metro Supermarket is now Metro Market
Metro Supermarket and Department Store is now Metro Hi-Per
Aside from Lucky Chinatown Mall in Binondo, they're opening Metro Hi-Per Alabang. It's still unknown whether their soon-to-open branches in Cavite and Negros Occidental will be a Market or a Hi-Per

For Senator: Gwen still ranks 45th in Pulse Asia survey
http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=790831&publicationSubCategoryId=107
CEBU, Philippines - Cebu Governor Gwendolyn maintains her 45th spot in the latest nationwide survey conducted by the Pulse Asia on who Filipinos want to vote for senator in the 2013 elections.
In a list of 74 possible candidates for senator in February 26 to March 9, 2012 survey of Pulse Asia, Garcia remains on the 45th slot. The governor also occupied the same spot in the November 2011 survey wherein only 70 possible candidates were listed.
The result of the survey did not anymore surprise Garcia because the latter has not declared whether she is running or not.
The governor's brother, Rep. Pablo John Garcia of the third district, said they were not aware of the latest survey.
"But if that's the result, that's not surprising since she has not declared whether she's running or not," Rep. Garcia said.
The result of the survey shows that Garcia held on to her ranking despite the entry of some popular personalities and celebrities.
Among the new names found in the recent survey results include that of news personality and former Leyte Rep. Ted Failon who is on the 11th place; Rep. Rodolfo Biazon (13th); Kris Aquino (17th); Sharon Cuneta (23rd); Grace Poe (25th); former senator Ernesto Maceda (27th); former senator Francisco Tatad (37th) and Robert Ace Barbers (41st).
Rep. Niel Tupaz rose from the 69th place last year to being number 40; Francis Tolentino placed 42nd from 46th last year while Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas placed number 44 from 65 last year.
Four congressmen who used to be on top of Garcia in the survey are now lagging behind her. They are Reps. Satur Ocampo (47); Nereus Acosta Jr. (48); Mark Cojuangco (51) and former senator Roilo Golez (52).
Some of the probable candidates who were no longer included in the recent list released by Pulse Asia include TV personality Korina Sanchez, Rozzano Rufino Biazon, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and presidential nephew Paolo Benigno Aquino.
The Pulse Asia said that if the May 2013 senatorial elections were held during the survey, 15 out of the 74 personalities included in the list would have a statistical chance of winning a senatorial seat.
Most of the probable winners are either incumbent or former members of the Senate.
Claiming the top spot is Senator Loren Legarda, who enjoys an overall voter preference of 58.5 percent followed by Senator Francis Escudero (52.7%). Last year, Legarda placed second to Escudero.
Completing the top five are former senator and now Transportation and Communications Secretary Manuel Roxas II (41.8%), Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano (41.6%) and Cagayan Rep. Juan Ponce Enrile, Jr. (38.2%).
Former vice-president Noli de Castro, also a former member of the Senate, would be re-elected as senator by 34.6 percent.
Re-electionists Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV (33.7%), Sen. Gregorio Honasan (32.1%), San Juan Rep. Joseph Victor Ejercito (31.3%) while Sen. Aquilino Martin Pimentel III (29.0%).
Five other individuals who made it to the winning circle are former Leyte Rep. Ted Failon (26.9%), Justice Secretary Leila de Lima (26.6%) former senator and incumbent Muntinlupa Rep. Rodolfo Biazon (22.5%) former senator Juan Miguel F. Zubiri (22.4%) and former senator Jamby Madrigal (21.8%).
There are seven other personalities who are within striking distance of a senatorial seat - former Quezon City Rep. Michael Defensor (21.5%), Kris Aquino (20.7%), former senator Richard Gordon (20.3%), Willie Revillame (20.2%), Ma. Lourdes Nancy Binay (19.5%), Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos (18.6%) and Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara (18.1%).
As in the previous surveys, the nationwide survey was based on a sample of 1,200 representative adults 18 years old and above, said the Pulse Asia. — (FREEMAN)
isla March 25th, 2012, 02:53 PM After decade of neglect on Cebu City's basic services due to no budget bcoz of debt payments for SRP, its about time that the city spends the money for road repairs, garbage collection, traffic control, drainage & other services. If only the council approved Mayor Rama's budget then the city would have enough resources to implement its plan for a more livable Cebu. Parchie March 25th, 2012, 06:16 PM After decade of neglect on Cebu City's basic services due to no budget bcoz of debt payments for SRP, its about time that the city spends the money for road repairs, garbage collection, traffic control, drainage & other services. Zuburbia March 25th, 2012, 09:06 PM Soon to be chinese heritage center: CH terminates Gotiaco bldg lease
By Jessica Ann R. Pareja/MIT (The Freeman) Updated March 26, 2012 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Government and the Gotianuy Realty Corporation have terminated last Friday the lease agreement on the 50-year old Gotiaco Building which the city ordered evacuated following a quake.
The lease was then turned over to the Sugbu Chinese Heritage Musuem Foundation Inc. which is eyeing the building as a Chinese Heritage Center.
Fr. Jason Dy of Sacred Heart Parish and Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum Foundation Inc. was in City Hall last Friday for the turn over.
He also discussed with City Administrator Jose Marie Poblete the plans of the Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum Foundation Inc. for the Gotiaco Building.
Dy said it will be converted into a Chinese Heritage Museum that will tell the history of the Chinese influence in Cebu.
“Because in Cebu we do not have a China town, but we are saying that the whole of Cebu is really a Chinese Community. We are also inspired by the Bahay Tsinoy in Intramuros,” Dy said.
It will be a museum and sort of a library or Chinese Center for ongoing and future researches about the Chinese here.
“There will be a repository of Chinese artifacts and documents. We also want to put a conference or a training room for seminars,” Dy said.
Dy added that they will also consider the plan of the city government to incorporate in their plans the establishment of a Senior Citizen Center within the building.
In the letter of Gotianuy Realty Corporation President Augusto Go to Mayor Michael Rama, the former assured that such concern will be taken up with the Foundation for possible inclusion in the development plan of the building.
“We believe that such development plan for the building is also in accord with your vision to transform the entire corridor (Plaza-Gotiaco-Carbon-Warwick-Freedom) into a heritage cum tourism site,” Go said.
Dy said there is no target date yet for the completion of the project but they have started the research process.
For the meantime, they will be repainting and will put lighting to the building for minor tours.
Dy said that the building plan may change if the Cebu Ports Authority will also develop the Campañia Maritima as they will try to make both historical buildings complement each other.
The area beside the Gotiaco Building is also eyed as a park. It is the space where the warehouses are currently being demolished. — (FREEMAN)

‘Vacate unsafe Gotiaco Bldg., area’
| More |
By Elly T. Bolonos
Saturday, February 11, 2012
AFTER he ordered four Cebu City Hall offices to vacate the Gotiaoco Bldg. immediately for fear it might collapse, Mayor Michael Rama now wants the whole block where the structure is located to be cleared of occupants.
Adjacent to the building is an open space surrounded by tall fences that the mayor feared have been damaged and also might collapse, after Monday’s 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Central Visayas, including Cebu City.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
The open space is occupied by more than 60 street traders in the Carbon area who are members of the Allied Vendors Association (AVA).
Rama said he doesn’t want to be blamed if the fences collapse, so he ordered the whole block to be cordoned off.
He instructed City Administrator Jose Marie Poblete to take charge of securing the area so passersby would be aware the risks.
Poblete, in an interview, said he will ask the Squatters Prevention Encroachment and Elimination Division to cordon off the area.
The city administrator said he wants all the occupants to vacate first before the entire block is closed.
Occupants at the Gotiaoco Bldg., which include the Market Operations Division, yesterday started preparing the area where they are going to transfer.
The decision of the mayor, however, doesn’t sit well with the members of AVA who have occupied the area since 2002.
AVA president Vicente Polo said they are safe in the area because the fences that surround them are 14-inch-thick solid blocks.
The organization’s adviser, Erwin Goc-ong, said the area has no roof that might collopse or floors that might crack.
The AVA adviser said they will ask the mayor to reconsider his decision and let them stay in the area.
The open space on M.C. Briones St. is owned by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
AVA members are occupying the area for free.

Aside from Lucky Chinatown Mall in Binondo, they're opening Metro Hi-Per Alabang. It's still unknown whether their soon-to-open branches in Cavite and Negros Occidental will be a Market or a Hi-Per

Elizabeth Fournier visits two idyllic Filipino islands and finds heritage, wildlife and vibrant local colour in abundance – along with perfect beaches
Elizabeth Fournier
HAVING recently visited nearby Malaysia, I thought I had a fair idea of what to expect from the Philippines. A bustling Asian melting pot where a hotchpotch of cultures, religions and cuisines collide in the middle of the Indian ocean, right?
But stepping off the plane at our first stop – Mactan Island in Cebu – felt more like landing in the Caribbean. As we made our way through the arrivals lounge after a 14-hour trawl via Hong Kong, our hosts rushed forward with jasmine flower necklaces and loud exclamations of “Mabuhay” – Tagalog for welcome, and the one Filipino word I hear more than any other during my week in the country.
Cebu – the first place Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan landed in the Philippines – is the perfect place to start a holiday, steeped as it is in so much of the islands’ tumultuous history.
Though Magellan was swiftly killed after converting the island’s ruler to Christianity, his voyage set in motion the Spanish colonisation of the Philippines that lasted more than 300 years and left an indelible stamp on Filipino culture – undoubtedly what makes it feel so different from the rest of Asia. From the traditional guitar-making shops on every street corner in Cebu to the habit of serenading passers by in as many public places as possible, the entire country is imbued with the spirit of its conquerors.

sugbuanon March 27th, 2012, 02:43 AM Capitol, FLI sign BOT contract
By Oscar C. Pineda and Rizel S. Adlawan
Tuesday, March 27, 2012
CAPITAL and the Filinvest Land Inc. yesterday signed an agreement that signals the start of the development of a 1.2-hectare provincial lot in Barangay Apas, Cebu City into a business process outsourcing (BPO) complex.
Under the agreement, Filinvest will construct four towers, which will house BPO firms, within five years. The P4-billion project is expected to create 10,000 jobs and generate income for the Provincial Government through rentals and revenue share.
The first tower to be constructed will cost almost P1.8 billion and is expected to generate about 2,000 BPO jobs.
The BPO complex will rise on the lot that used to be occupied by the Cebu City Jail and drug rehabilitation center along Salinas Drive, Cebu City.
Governor Garcia is eyeing private investments on other Capitol properties, such as Fuente Osmeña and 80.7 hectares in Camp Lapu-Lapu.
Capitol and a private property developer are also planning to build a commercial and residential complex near the Asiatown I.T. Park. The implementation of the project, known as Ciudad, has been stalled due to the opposition of then Cebu City mayor Tomas Osmeña.
With Mayor Michael Rama at Cebu City Hall, Ciudad was issued barangay and locational clearances.

sugbuanon March 27th, 2012, 02:52 AM Alvin Garcia to help City beautify waterfront areas
By Princess Dawn H. Felicitas
Tuesday, March 27, 2012
CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama will tap the services of former mayor Alvin Garcia to beautify waterfront areas, particularly those near City Hall.
The mayor said Garcia will be part of a multi-sectoral body he will create to preserve and beautify the Malacañang sa Sugbo, Compaña Maritima, Gotiaoco Building, Carbon market, Freedom Park and Warwick Barracks, which will connect to Plaza Independencia and Fort San Pedro.
“He (Alvin) is very much willing to get involved in this project and to be of assistance to the City Government. So why would we deny his precious, golden thoughts?” he said. The mayor said he talked to Alvin about the matter a couple of days ago.
In a news conference yesterday, Rama said Alvin had several projects during his stint as mayor that he wanted to implement like improving the waterfront areas. “He has many ideas, which I subscribe nga wa nabuhat niadto (were not implemented). Now, we want to create the possibility of bringing a new face to the waterfront areas,” he said.

cyberCEBU March 27th, 2012, 04:59 AM Queen City climbs to third spot in UFL
CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Queen City United FC padded its winning run to six games in a row with a 5-2 conquest of Manila All-Japan in the Second Division of the 2012 United Football League (UFL) last Sunday at the Turfin Bonifacio Global City.
Thus, the QCU booters of coach Mario Ceniza ended their first round campaign at third place with 22 points on seven wins, two defeats and one draw.
Fighting in full force, QCU coasted to a 2-0 lead at halftime. Skipper Jan Michael Flores broke the ice of the match at the 19th, while Rene Menchavez, Jr. punched in their second goal at the 29th.
Marion Rey Cubelo stretched QCU's lead to 3-0 at the 69th, but Manila All-Japan FC retaliated with back-to-back goals from Shinichi Tanaka at the 75th and Masahko Yagi at the 85th to pull within a hairline, 2-3.
That was the best Manila All-Japan could muster though as QCU regained its offensive bearing with Benedict Luis Arriola firing a goal at the 89th before Cubelo wrapped up the match with a goal at the 91st.

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu—The manta ray’s tail was the last thing the visiting journalists saw as the sun’s rays sparkled on the wide blue-green expanse of one of the world’s six known double-barrier reefs.
“Expect tsunamis, weakened by the reef, to inundate whatever they come to,” Angelie Nellas said, giving emphasis to the protective role of Danajon Bank, which covers a 214.6-hectare marine park and sanctuary she and her colleagues have been trying to save since 2003.
The depletion, however, has been going on since the 1950s, according to Apurado, as the Danajon Double Barrier Reef or Danajon Bank has been a critical fishing ground for thousands of fishers from Cebu, Bohol, Leyte and Southern Leyte.
The four provinces covers Danajon Bank, a 130 kilometer-long, 272 square-kilometer coral area. The bank represents 1 percent of the total coral area in the country.
“This natural beautiful wonder is just an hour’s boat ride away from the city Lapu-Lapu. If Australia has its Great Barrier Reef, we should promote the Philippines’s only double-barrier reef.”

A LAID-BACK attitude to ecological restoration may cost the country further loss of its coral reefs, biodiversity and, eventually, source of food, a scientist said.
“Within the human-dominated system, restoration have to be integrated within the broader context of all the main driving factors of ecosystem degradation, in which agriculture often has central importance,” professor Rhodora Azanza of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute said, echoing findings of scientists in 2009.
Azanza said previous efforts have been focused on conservation, which has helped increase production of food, “but mostly for aquaculture.”
“Marine reserves fall short of the required 25 to 35 percent of 25,000 sq.m. of coral reef areas that need to be protected to get meaningful and faster results to protect and/or stabilize biodiversity and enhance productivity of these areas.”
These marine areas total 1.61 million hectares comprised of the provinces of Antique, Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Negros Oriental and Samar.

mAiNsTrEaMhunter March 27th, 2012, 03:42 PM Cebu: Visita iglesia along the Southern Cebu heritage trail
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-fGx2wDrdVc/S7Llm4LlqzI/AAAAAAAAGDU/B6iiqW6bj58/s400/visita.jpg
Visita iglesia is a popular activity in Southern Cebu where most of the centuries-old churches are very much intact. As part of our trip to Sumilon Island, we stopped by seven churches along the way although there are several more churches worth stopping by close to Cebu City like Pardo Church and Naga Church, our first stop for the morning was the (1) San Fernando Church.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-fGx2wDrdVc/S7Llw0txCTI/AAAAAAAAGEU/8i_NRkY2Bgw/s1600/visita-sanfernando.jpg
I've been to Carcar many times. So due to fatigue and lack of sleep, I slept in the van when we stopped in (2) Carcar Church. But Carcar is one of the better churches along the Southern Cebu heritage trail. The town is very much intact and undoubtedly, it's the best preserved colonial town of Cebu. I hope it remains that way. Hopefully, the City Government of Carcar realizes the economic potential of protecting its historic streetscape and promoting the town as a cultural tourism destination.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-fGx2wDrdVc/TKjYphuTkII/AAAAAAAAHX4/x0GCBKOFOYo/s1600/southcebu08.jpg
(3) Sibonga Church is the next church on the route. Again, having visited this church previously, I continued sleeping on the van.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-fGx2wDrdVc/SbwHhMdi99I/AAAAAAAAEs4/0-QiShvjP_Y/s1600/sibonga.jpg
For some reason, I decided to get up at (4) Argao Church. The historic core of the town, including the church, plaza and government buildings, could have been a candidate for inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage List. But due to the misinformed, and at times, hard-headed local and church officials, the historic core is no longer as intact as before.
Argao has one of the last tile-roofed municipal buildings. And what is sad is that the municipal government literally sandwiched the historic casa municipal between two modern buildings. They even added a balcony to the entrance which is really horrible. And who could forget the horrible Midas touch of the previous parish priest who painted the colorful main altar retablo in irreparable latex gold and silver paint creating the biggest trophy case in the country.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-fGx2wDrdVc/S7LloDdGokI/AAAAAAAAGDc/oU-B9-2cN0s/s1600/visita-argao.jpg
(5) Dalaguete Church was our next stop. The sun was really heating up and I could feel my head ache. So after taking photos of the facade, I went back in the van. Dalaguete Church is another heritage disaster since the priest replaced the wooden altar floor with ugly marble with triangular-shaped designs, obviously an eyesore amidst this Philippine Baroque work of art.

(6) Boljoon Church is one of the highlights of any Southern Cebu church tour. The town really knows how to value its heritage and has done everything to raise funds for the church's upkeep and restoration. It is a National Cultural Treasure in fact, a declaration which is very well-deserved.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-fGx2wDrdVc/S7LlrdY7KSI/AAAAAAAAGD0/3sVphOHPKxs/s1600/visita-boljoon.jpg
(7) Oslob Church burned down several years back because of the negligence of the priest who left his computer turned-on while he was out of the church. It's not a good idea to do that in an old structure especially if there is no one else there to notice when a short circuit starts a fire. At least they did not demolish the church and instead reconstructed it around the ruins. What is sad though is the centuries-old wooden convento with tile roofing which had survived several fires in the past did not survive the most recent one despite advances in technology. I wonder if they will reconstruct that.

While in Oslob, check out the ruins of the Daanlungsod Fort which is said to be larger than Fort San Pedro in Cebu City. You'll get to pass by all of this on the way to Sumilon Island.

TO COMPLEMENT the tourism department’s new slogan “It’s more fun in the Philippines!” a wireless communications company and a local-based website launched an electronic guidebook on Cebu last Friday.
“A Guide to Cebu 2012” is the second e-book introduced by Smart Communications and MyCebu.ph that aims to support the promotion of tourism in Cebu using digital and mobile technologies. Last month, they launched “A Guide to Sinulog 2012” and demonstrated how information about tourism sites can be downloaded on mobile devices instantly using QR code scanning. The Sinulog guidebook had 859 downloads as of Sunday.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Small markers with QR codes have been placed on selected tourism and heritage sites in Cebu. They are planning to add more of these markers around major tourism destinations.
Smart officials said the e-books and QR scanning project are part of the company’s efforts to encourage and enable tourism advocates to promote their own hometowns, which is also in line with the Department of Tourism’s new campaign.
MyCebu.ph co-founder Max Limpag said social networking sites like Facebook, Google+, Twitter and location-based services like FourSquare are plugged into the system so that tourists can post and share their thoughts online. This, he said, capitalizes on social networking to help spread word on the country’s tourism sites. (Disclosure: Limpag is the editor of this section.)
Updates
He explained that by offering the guidebook online and by optimizing it for mobile devices, tourists can make the most of their trip without lugging around bulky guidebooks about Cebu.
He said they will be updating the guidebook regularly, especially on new spots and the list of accredited DOT establishments.
Aside from information about a heritage site, Limpag said the QR codes offer tips for tourists.
Smart public affairs group head Ramon Isberto said the project uses technology to serve purposes and needs in a dynamic way.
“It’s an excellent idea. It’s connecting the very old to the very young,” he said.
DOT 7 Director Rowena Montecillo admitted that she was first confused about how things were done but said she was impressed the moment she understood.
She added that the project is in line with what DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez is pushing for, which is making the most of social media. Montecillo also said that it reinforces the DOT slogan and shows how “fun” Cebu really is.
Cebu City Councilor Margot Osmeña said she was proud to learn that the project was initiated by Cebuanos.
“It’s more fun in finding out what is new in old Cebu,” she said, making her own spin on the new DOT slogan.
After taking a tour of the sites of Parian, Osmeña said the project lets the tourist see the old structures “with new eyes.”

that part of NRA is getting to shine more due to the presence of sm mall and radisson hotel. Residential and office tower is likely to sprout around that mall complex and will start to form a commercial business district. just my idea.

I haven't seen this nor any of our tourism ad on local and cable networks here in NZ. Can't help to ask why and think that we are indeed one of the sick countries in the ASEAN region in terms of tourism after Brunei, Myanmar and Laos. Literally every week I've seen the tourism ads of our ASEAN neighbors like Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. The last 3 even have its own ad for for their premier destinations like Phuket, Bali and Kota Kinabalu. Not only that, the last four ASEAN countries have their flag carriers flies in and out of NZ twice to five times a week.
I have an idea why we can't do what our ASEAN neighbors are doing here. I just couldn't accept why we can't! Whew! Sad!

http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Economy&title=Risks-cited-in-pending-Cebu-project&id=49166
CEBU CITY -- A flood control master plan for Metro Cebu had been developed through a grant from the Japanese government but its delayed implementation due to lack of funds poses risks to the business district, the province’s top official said.
"There will always be threat of flood," Cebu Governor Gwendolyn F. Garcia said in a meeting with officials from the Japanese embassy on Tuesday.
"[W]e need immediate work in infrastructure… The growth has been so fast that the infrastructure has not kept up and we need a total rehabilitation of our drainage and sewerage system," she added.
Ms. Garcia identified Cebu, Mandaue and Talisay cities and Consolacion town as areas at risk to flooding.
"[W]e need wider roads, we need to clear the river banks," she said
Ms. Garcia noted that the Japanese government has funded an updated flood master plan. As part of its implementation, local government units, business representatives and some national government agencies signed a memorandum of agreement creating the Metro Cebu Development and Coordinating Board.
"[W]e need to harmonize our infrastructure especially in connecting drainages, assessing [flood] outlets and connecting traffic system," Ms. Garcia said.
However, she noted that implementation will require more funds.
Ms. Garcia indicated seeking foreign aid for flood-related projects. "With the help of the [Japanese government], we may find the means to implement that," she said.
The Cebu governor added that aside from support from the Japanese government, investors in Cebu’s economic zones have also invested in the island’s infrastructure.
Nearly half of the total investments in Cebu’s six economic zones are from Japanese investors.
Data from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority showed that Japanese investments comprised P30.12 billion of the total P60.56 billion in investments last year.
Of the 198 locators in Cebu’s economic zones, 91 are Japanese firms.

Japanese-owned shipbuilding company based in Balamban town in western Cebu is projecting a P25 billion contribution to Cebu this year.
Hitoshi Kono, Tsuneishi Heavy Industries Inc. (THI) president, told visiting Japanese Embassy officials that the firm was confident of pouring into Cebu at least ¥50 billion (P25 billion) for this year alone.
Kono, however, didn’t go into specifics of the ¥50 billion contribution but cited already completing at least 18 of the targeted 21 ships orders from abroad.
Last year, the firm targeted to deliver at least 17 cargo vessels. But this year they were optimistic on finishing at least 21 ships, said Delio Cuevas, THI General Manager – safety department.
Since the Japanese company was founded in Cebu in 1994, the company has since delivered 130 ships by 2011.
Kono toured the media and briefed two Japanese officials from the Japanese Embassy in their visit to the shipyard.
Hiroshi Yamakawa, Second Secretary for Economic Section of the Embassy of Japan, together with Kenji Hirai, press officer for Japan Information and Culture Center, are in Cebu to visit beneficiaries of their loan programs and assess the impact of their project to the community.
Although THI is not a loan beneficiary but Japan’s Official Development Assistance helped in linking the Tsuneishi Group in Japan and Aboitiz Group in the Philippines.
Since 1994, Balamban town has been progressive since the shipbuilding industry was built in the 147 hectare reclaimed property.

Since 1994, Balamban town has been progressive since the shipbuilding industry was built in the 147 hectare reclaimed property.

mAiNsTrEaMhunter March 29th, 2012, 04:53 AM Japanese envoy sees increase in Cebu investments this year
By Oscar C. Pineda
Thursday | March 29, 2012
WITH investments reaching P30.123 billion last year, Japan has emerged as Cebu’s biggest investor.
According to a Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) report, 91 of the 198 total Peza companies in Cebu are Japanese-owned.
The Japanese-owned companies, mostly located in Mactan Island, export roughly $2.04 billion worth of goods, which is more than half or 53.37 percent of Cebu’s total Peza exports of $3.619 billion.
“We are very appreciative of Japan’s role in contributing to the economy of Cebu,” was the governor’s statement to her visitors. She named Tsuneishi in Balamban and Mitsumi in Danao, the two big Japanese firms in Cebu that provided employment to thousands of Cebuanos.

By Lenie Lectura, BusinessMirror

MANILA, Philippines - Businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan said on Tuesday his group is very keen on pursuing projects via the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Program, particularly three of the busiest airports in the country.
He cited Naia (Ninoy Aquino International Airport), Mactan International Airport and Clark International Airport.
“The country is in need of infra projects. I think it’s up to the government to decide which they should privatize first. There is no assurance that anybody can win it. I am not saying that we will win all three or one. It’s going to be a competitive bidding. There are only three airports that I can think of that are attractive for the moment. I could be wrong,” said Pangilinan.

Henz March 29th, 2012, 05:43 PM Real estate growth ‘to continue’
By Katlene O. Cacho
Monday, February 20, 2012
REAL estate players see continued growth in the industry with the government’s Public-Private-Partnership projects taking off this year.
Filinvest Land Inc. (FLI) AVP area sales head Boler Binamira Jr. said the implementation of the PPP projects will open more business and job opportunities for the sector.
“2012 is another year to reckon with the government spending on infrastructure. This is another indicator for a continued upward growth in real estate,” Binamira said during the Real Estate Economic Forum organized by Realty Options Inc. last Saturday.
He said industry analysts predict a continued growth in the sector over the next 13 years. Although, the projection is a “conservative analysis,” Binamira said it is based on the demand “of the whole spectrum of the industry.”
Economic conditions
The Department of Budget and Management allocated P19.6 billion for Aquino’s PPP programs this year for road, airport and transport developments.
In his presentation, Binamira noted that the improving fiscal and economic conditions, rapid increase of dollar remittances and sustained growth of the information
technology (IT) service are among the reasons national players in the sector, such as FLI, Ayala Land, and SM Development Corp. are investing in the real estate industry.
In terms of remittances, Binamira said 30 percent of the total overseas remittances goes to the real estate industry or approximately P600 billion in investments per year.
“This is why (developers) are racing against time to get a chunk of this big market,” he said.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas recorded $18.8 billion in overseas remittances in 2011, excluding the money sent home through informal channels.
Binamira said education and home acquisition are the top two priorities of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) when it comes to remittance spending.
He said the growing middle class market is another factor that also drives developers to continue building homes. Binamira cited the growing number of OFWs belonging to the higher income brackets.
“Aside from the domestic helpers, the country also sends a lot of nurses, IT professionals, architects and engineers into the different parts of the world,” he said.
He said this also explains the sustained growth of the remittances despite conflicts in other countries.
The optimism in the real estate industry is also because of the huge housing backlog. The Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council recorded a 4.2 million
shortfall in housing last year.
Housing boom
“If you were to spread the housing backlog, then we see a housing boom for the next five or so years on top of the new demand every year,” Binamira said.
He said much of the demand is for affordable, socialized and middle-income housing.
“We have around 70 percent target market now. This figure will also explain why national players have diversified their housing products,” he said.
Binamira said the South Road Property (SRP) development is an important driver of real estate growth in Cebu.
“The SRP development is an important indicator that will propel growth of gross domestic product, migration and employment. It will help catalyze the growth in Cebu, similar to Macau and Singapore,” Binamira said.
He said there were 73 high-rise buildings in Cebu as of last July. Of the number, 55 are already completed while 18 are still under construction.
Cebu will have 88 high-rise buildings by 2015, he said. The number does not include the 11 high-rise buildings to be put up in Mactan Island.

Tsuneishi to pour in P25B to Cebu (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/168865/tsuneishi-to-pour-in-p25b-to-cebu)

Since 1994, Balamban town has been progressive since the shipbuilding industry was built in the 147 hectare reclaimed property.
slerz March 29th, 2012, 10:46 PM Real estate growth ‘to continue’
By Katlene O. Cacho

REAL estate players see continued growth in the industry with the government’s Public-Private-Partnership projects taking off this year.
Housing boom

“The SRP development is an important indicator that will propel growth of gross domestic product, migration and employment. It will help catalyze the growth in Cebu, similar to Macau and Singapore,” Binamira said.
But overall, if the government officials (mao ni ang mga tawo nga nagpatuga tuga og lansar ini'g eleksyon...wa gud ni sila pugsa) are not keen on doing their best in making initiative as to how to make Cebu a better place to live, then our urban growth direction will be the opposite of Macau and Singapore.

Wa ta'y mabuhat ana kay if mu-switch ang mga TV Networks sa ilahang programming sa primetime, basin mawagtang ilang viewers. LOL. Unsaon ta man ning kasagaran sa mga Pino (apil na ko), mamahilig man gyud kaayo'g drama ui. Mao ra gyud na'y pampalipas oras inig gabii. Lingaw pud kaayo tawn sila ui. Bisag halos balik2x nalang ang istorya, tan-aw ra gihapon ang mga tawo. Haha! Saba pa kaayo akong mga ig-agaw ug mga silingan if manan-aw na sa amu-a kay affected gyud kaayo sa mga scenes. Lol.
Akong gi-hope gyud nuh nga magka-courage ang ABS-CBN ug GMA nga magchange ug programming style sa primetime. Bisag kanang drama series sa primetime nga once a week, like sa US, naa ta'y ingon ana pud para dili puol kaayo bah. :)
Naa pa'y PBB, sige lang balik2x. Pero, daghan gihapon mutan-aw. Haha. Paeta.

Ang uban nga foreign channels dunay Home Improvement programs, kitchen and cooking real scenes, current affairs nga dili opinionated pareha diri sa ato-a, Science programs, environmental awareness programs, ug uban pa nga choices. Naa ba ta'y ingon ana? Ang ato mora'g arts (music, drama, make-believe, etc.) hasta ang mga current affairs, drama ang mogawas; bisan ang government sponsored programs saktan ug mga ginagmay nga BS! Going to Bantayan you will take a bus at the North Bus Terminal in Cebu City going to Hagnaya in San Remigio. The trip will take you about 3-4 hours to Hagnaya Port.

Once you're there, you will ride a ferry boat to Santa Fe in Bantayan Island and will take you about 30 minutes.
habagatcentral1 March 31st, 2012, 08:43 AM ^^ And perhaps one notable thing there is...its so darn cheap going to the north! (And I'm still wondering why, as compared to going south of Cebu City?)
mAiNsTrEaMhunter March 31st, 2012, 09:02 AM ^^ probably because the south is more distant that the north from Cebu City and a lot of people use the southern ports to get to other islands like Bohol, Negros, Siquijor, and Northern Mindanao. IMO
Even buses going to the western towns like Toledo City and Balamban take the southern route via Naga City. so I guess, the volume of passengers in the south is heavy than in the north.
majaba98 March 31st, 2012, 09:30 AM sorry to hear that... im sure the city officials are finding solutions to find these people better allocations for them ...
whatever it is, have time enjoying our city ...
We need solutions for the poor. Just look into their eyes, they seem so helpless. Better housing, jobs, proper education, adequate nourishment, birth control, and medical healthcare.

rx_slyrain March 31st, 2012, 11:27 AM AboitizLand to build integrated commercial project in Mandaue
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated March 31, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (0)
CEBU, Philippines - Aside from its active stand to pour in investments for residential projects in Cebu, Aboitiz Land Inc., is also currently crafting a full master plan of its planned integrated commercial project at the 15-hectare property at the Mandaue North Reclamation Area.
AboitizLand president Andoni Aboitiz said that the company will soon announce the concrete plan of the property, while one of the possibilities is to build an integrated commercial development on the area such as establishing BPO building, commercial and residential condominiums, and retail joints, among others.
This plan will be introduced along with other projects of the company, such as the recently launched Priveya Hills in the northern part of Cebu, which is targeted to property buyers that prefer sophisticated urban living.
The upcoming commercial project at the North Reclamation Area, Mandaue City, is another commercial development to be introduced by the company, after the Mactan Export Zone II.
This is to take advantage of the booming commercial real estate industry in the Cebu, specifically in providing more BPO-ready buildings.
Part of the initial plan is to invite a hotel developer to locate in the area, as well as build a series of mid and high-rise towers for condominiums and BPO markets.
Despite the establishments of more commercial buildings, specifically targeting the growing BPO market, Cebu still offers a huge opportunity for integrated developments, in order to complement with the fast growing demand and interest for fresh investments.
Record showed that as of December 2011, Cebu’s available office stock totaled to 428,075 square meters. Condominium units available for residential occupancy have reached 4,551, while hotel rooms in all category types now are at 11,169.
Cebu Investment and Promotions Center (CIPC) managing director Joel Mari S. Yu said this number is expected to grow in the next few months or years, while developers are building more commercial and residential condominium, as well as hotel rooms, as Cebu is considered as the fastest growing economy in the Philippines.
This year alone, At least eight new Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies to open in Cebu in the next few months, that will initially hire four to five thousand people in different professional backgrounds.
Yu earlier announced that the last two months were the fastest growing months in terms of investors’ inquiries in BPO.
This development indicated that Cebu needs more commercial facility and BPO-ready building to strengthen its attractiveness for new investments, as well as expansion programs of existing BPO operators here.
In 2011, Cebu registered a total of 126 IT-BPO companies operating here, which is an increase of 24 percent from the previous year. (FREEMAN)

Andrew_azuh March 31st, 2012, 12:49 PM School execs face criminal raps over FB bikini row
....................
Cebu, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - Parents of two students in Cebu City who were barred from taking part in their graduation rites for posting photos on Facebook showing them in bikinis have filed criminal charges against school officials.
Saint Theresa's College (STC) officials face grave oral defamation and child abuse charges, according to the parents of the students.
STC on Friday defied a temporary restraining order issued by the Cebu Regional Trial Court Branch 19 that required the Catholic school to allow the students to join the graduation rites.
The affected students approached the gate of STC with their parents Friday afternoon.
They were in their school uniforms and were still hoping to join the graduation ceremony.
However, school guards prevented them from entering the campus.
The parents insisted that the court had ruled the children could take part in the graduation.
The guards, however, did not budge.
The graduation rites were held without the students and their names were not mentioned during the event.
The students could only break down in tears.
Some of the parents could not help but express their anger.
STC officials stood by their decision, saying they have filed a motion for reconsideration on the TRO issued by Cebu City RTC Judge Wilfredo Navarro.
"The punishment that was given, that is not un-Christian. They may graduate. They have everything except that [taking part in the ceremony]," school directress Sister Ma. Purisima Pe said in a press conference held Friday night.
However, clerk of court Atty. Ofelia delos Reyes said a motion for reconsideration on a TRO has no legal standing.
"The TRO is immediate and executory. They know it," she said.
ABS-CBN talked to parents of 2 of the 5 students.
One of the parents said her child wanted to commit suicide out of shame.
Youth groups in Cebu City have condemned the actions of the school, which has yet to issue an official statement.
The parents of one of the students earlier filed a separate petition for injunction with damages against school officials Sister Celeste Ma. Purisima Pe, school principal; Mussolini Yap, assistant principal; Marnie Racaza, student affairs moderator; Kristine Rose Ligot, discipline in-charge; and Edita Josephine Yu, homeroom adviser, according to regional newspaper Sun.Star.
Department of Education Assitant Secretary Tonisito Umali has declined to comment on the details of the STC issue, saying the case is now in the hands of the court.
However, he told ANC that the DepEd has started its own investigation into the case. "We're investigating the matter from our end. The DepEd can't make any action that may run contrary to findings of the Cebu court."
Umali said the DepEd respects private schools' rights to create own policies, but the government can intervene if school policies violate the law.
He added that schools should think of penalties commensurate to the offense committed by their students.
"To all our students, I strongly advise to read carefully your student handbook, especially if we're talking about Catholic schools," he said.
Parchie March 31st, 2012, 01:40 PM Can we have the other side of these stories, please? What caused the HS girls from being not included in the graduation rites? Bikinis? I doubt it's about a simple dress code thing. We need more from our journalists. Not those "she/he said vs. she/he said" things.
dive-cebu March 31st, 2012, 01:45 PM ^^ yes bikinis, wearing them vs the written rules of the school. That simple.
