S. Korean Hotel Chain to Expand to Philippines

SEOUL, March 27 Asia Pulse - Imperial Palace Hotel said Monday it will sign a deal to build a hotel in the Philippines, becoming the first South Korean hotel chain to branch out overseas.
The agreement, to be signed with Manila's BXT Corp. on Tuesday, calls for the construction of a 668-room hotel on Mactan Island in the central part of the Philippines by October next year.

Under the deal, the South Korean hotel will run the 15-story hotel and provide managerial expertise for the Philippine company, which will finance and build the hotel.

The South Korean company refused to disclose the financial details of the deal.

Rebuilding the old Cebu Plaza
Posted: 3:30 AM | Mar. 27, 2006

CEBU CITY-WITH FINANCIAL MUSCLE from the country's biggest bank, Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co., the Marco Polo Hotels found an opportunity to partake of Cebu's booming tourism industry by reviving the foreclosed Cebu Plaza Hotel and repositioning it as a business travelers' preferred urban address.

By spending P800 million to rebuild the 329-room premier hotel in a province whose tourism industry is dominated by leisure estates on adjacent Mactan island (where the plush Shangri-La Hotel and the newly opened Hilton are), Marco Polo aims to bring more tourists to the city proper.

"We feel the Mactan properties serve the resort and leisure market that do not directly compete with the city," Marco Polo Plaza Cebu's general manager Hans Hauri tells a group of business reporters recently invited to the hotel's dry run.

"Our aim is not to take away business from the Mactan properties thinking they'll go over here. Our approach is (to think) how much more business can we get into the city that's looking for a product like Marco Polo Plaza," he says.

Marco Polo, which operates 10 other hotels in Asia, was invited by no less than Metrobank chair George Ty to join the bank's hotel venture in Cebu.

When the old Cebu Plaza opened its doors in the 1980s, the hotel industry in the Philippines wasn't well-developed, except for the few located in Makati, Hauri says.

The interior outfitting even then was very luxurious for its time, Hauri says.

"The location you can't take away, the reputation that goes way back in the early '80s is established, the emotions of the citizens of Cebu are inherent so it's now up to us to take advantage, to position ourselves," he says.

The pie is big enough for everyone and is even growing. Cebu, after all, is a top tourist haven, benefiting from the government's strategy to sell the Philippines as the nearest tropical destination to travelers from three vastly populated and affluent markets=-China, Japan and Korea.

"Last year, Cebu City had an average occupancy of 75 percent which means it is a good time that new room inventories come into the market," he says.

But he hopes that the government, aside from focusing on its three East Asian markets, would also take advantage of huge business conference markets in nearby financial centers Hong Kong and Singapore.

Citing local statistics, Hauri says the boom in Cebu's tourism started sometime in 2003, at the time that the SARS hysteria erupted across the region with China as its epicenter. There was a reorientation toward tourist areas untouched by the SARS epidemic and the Philippines, including Cebu, was among the beneficiaries.

After the Asian currency crisis of 1997, Hauri says business confidence started to recover by the turn of the century and even the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States brought some positive windfall to Asia.

"It was actually a plus for Asia because people, instead of making long-haul holidays, started to reorient themselves to regional travel," Hauri notes.

"It is very significant for a homegrown hotel to build an overseas hotel chain," said Shin Cheol-ho, chairman of Imperial Palace Hotel. "We will try to develop a long-term management strategy to internationalize."

CEBU is an island province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas region. Its capital is Cebu City. Cebu Island is a long narrow island that stretches 225 km (140 mi) from north to south and is surrounded by 167 neighboring small islands, including Mactan Island, Bantayan, Daanbantayan, Malapascua, Olango the Camotes Islands, etc.

Cebu is one of the most developed provinces in the country. The Metropolitan Area of Cebu or Metro Cebu (which includes Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City) is second only to Metro Manila in population in the country.

Cebu lies to the east of Negros Island; to the east is Leyte and to the southeast is Bohol province. It is flanked on both sides by the straits of Cebu (between Cebu and Bohol) and Tañon (between Cebu and Negros).

Cebu is served by Mactan-Cebu International Airport, which is located in Lapu-Lapu City, some thirty minutes drive from downtown Cebu City.

this is about the supposed 7-tower 700-room Korean hotel in Mactan we discussed before:

it is now clear that S. Korea's Imperial Palace hotel group will put up the P2 Billion 5-star condotel and resort facility in Marigondon, Mactan Island Cebu. we have yet to hear their official announcement which group will manage the hotel. it's either InterCon, Sheraton or Marriott. stay tuned

The project will include construction of six buildings, with 208 hotel rooms, 468 condotel units, and 44 poll villas.

Since we do not have official renderings yet, here are photos of the existing Imperial Palace Hotel in South Korea. (just to give us an idea how the upcoming mactan hotel will/may/might/should/must look like. :D

Springtime film fling
Honolulu Star Bulletin (http://starbulletin.com/2006/03/27/features/story01.html)

Just as Hawaii is a popular tourist destination, so is the Philippines, in particular the southern province of Cebu. Like our island state, Cebu boasts lovely natural landscapes, evocative music and friendly "natives."

Former Cebu resident Josabeth Alonso, who co-produced "Minsan Pa," one of the featured films at this year's Hawaii International Film Festival Spring Showcase, said drawing a Philippine audience to a serious film like this one is tough.

"Since the story is specifically about tourism in Cebu, it could not have been shot anywhere else," said Lao. "The Cebuano language is as widely spoken as (Tagalog) and I thought it was about time that we did a film that pays tribute to the Cebuano culture in general and the Cebuano language in particular."

Good morning guys mwaaaahhhhhh, Markiiboi is correct, this South Korean who will construct the Imperial Palace in Mactan is defferent from the other South Korean who will build a 7 tower condotel also in Mactan. I dont think Imperial Palace would like the idea if onother Hotel management group ( intercon, sheraton ect.) will manage their property when in fact they are the largest hotel chain in South Korea. So meaning to say there are two South Korean who are interested to build a hotel/resort complex in Mactan. The 7 tower will be constructed within this year and for the Imperial Palace is next year yet (October) . Ok boys i have to work na. mwaaahhhhhhhhhhh.

RP to host int'l counter-terrorism conference in Cebu next month

MANILA - The Philippines will host a three-day international counter-terrorism conference at the Shangri-La Mactan Island Resort and Spa in Mactan, Cebu on April 20-22 amid continuing worries over terrorist activities in the region.

The key objective of the First Counter-Terrorism Experts Conference (CTEC) is to "extensively explore a realistic middle ground to counter-terrorism, a strategic policy response that is development in nature, takes into account sub-regional approaches, rationalizes capacity-building, addresses peculiar causes and conditions and allows developing countries to strike a balance between counter-terrorism assistance and protecting their cultures and religions."

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo first announced the holding of the conference during the meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders with US President George W. Bush on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Busan, Korea in November 2005.

Keenly aware of the need for balance and moderation in the fight against terrorism, the President has pursued a middle ground in the quest for a comprehensive, socially just and "principled" peace process in Mindanao.

She has also carried the banner in promoting tolerance and broader solution of conflicts through interfaith dialogue as a policy response to conflict.

The CTEC will identify key dilemmas and difficulties in fighting terrorism from global, regional and national perspectives, and map out areas of convergence in counter-terrorism efforts through exploration of strategic and practical responses to address peculiar causes and conditions to sustain peace and development strategies while prosecuting the war on terror.

The conference is expected to come up with a declaration establishing the common counter-terrorism position of experts, particularly the "middle way" for those that live with and take direct responsibility for dealing with the threat.

The theme of the conference is "Defeating Dilemmas in Counter-Terrorism."

Lending substance to the theme will be five sub-themes: strengthening the basics, finding a realistic middle ground, understanding regional and sub-regional approaches, bridging the gaps and balancing assistance, and paving the middle way.

Participating in the conference are experienced counter-terrorism practitioners, policymakers, civil society leaders, and renowned scholars.

The 6th Elorde Awards: Ushering In a New Golden Era of Philippine Boxing

http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/1336/eanstorypic1de.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

MAKATI -- The mood of the 6th Elorde Awards Night dubbed as "The Banquet of Champions" was happy and expectant. Happy because of the recent positive development of professional boxing in the country and expectant because of the great promise the Philippines' up and coming boxers provide. There was a general feeling that the dawn of a new golden era of Philippine boxing has arrived.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, the event's guest speaker, predicted that a second golden era of Philippine boxing is at hand. Manny Pacquiao, this year's boxer of the year and undoubtedly the single most dominant force who awakened Philippine boxing from its hibernation in recent times, said during his speech that he was happy to see so many up and coming Filipino boxers who are making waves here and abroad, drawing inspiration from himself and from the late Gabriel "Flash" Elorde.

As the recipient of the "Boxer of the Year Award" was announced, the chilling and breath-taking dying moment of the10th round of the Pacquiao-Morales rematch last January was replayed on screen. When the images of the great Mexican fighter Erik Morales, who had never been knocked out in his entire career before this fight, was flashed, down on his knees a couple of times and totally vanquished by the indomitable Filipino, one cannot help but get awe-strucked by the magnitude of the Filipino fighter's accomplishment. Manny Pacquiao could have been awarded the boxer of the year honor many times over by this feat alone.

The other major awardee of the night was Filipino-American Brian Viloria, the WBC light flyweight champion who successfully defended his belt against Jose Antonio Aguirre last February 18 in Las Vegas. Viloria held the crowd to full attention during his emotional speech when he narrated the ups and downs of his career and thanked the people closest to him who supported him through and through, his father Ben and his manager, Gary Gittelsohn, who purposely flew to the country for this event alone.

With Pacquiao and Viloria in the house, one could have already been satisfied, but the night was something special because it was graced by the country's budding boxing superstars and other boxing luminaries.

Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista, recipient of 2005 regional champion award, easily stood out as well as Rodel Mayol, also a recipient of 2005 regional champion award, who will try to capture his first world title this coming May 6 in Japan against the Japan-based Thai Eagle Kyowa..

But the darling of the crowd was easily American trainer Freddie Roach, the 2004 U.S. Sportwriters Trainer of the Year awardee, who undoubtedly captured the hearts of the grateful Filipino nation by successully guiding the career of Manny Pacquiao as well as training other up and coming Filipino boxers.

Other major honorees were Cebu's Sammy Gello-ani, who, together ALA chief architect Antonio L. Aldeguer, inked a historic promotional contract with De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions two weeks ago, was named promoter of the year. Pacquiao's chief confidant Wakee Salud, was named manager of the year. Buboy Fernandez bagged the trainer of the year award. Adjudged best fight of the year was the battle between Alex Escaner and Bernabe Concepcion which was held in Cainta, Rizal on Dec. 10, 2005.

Other awardees who gave a peek at the illustrious career of Flash Elorde and the past glorious years were 76-years old Tanny Campo, who lost to Elorde twice as a bantamweight, and lightweight Tommy Romulo, who fought Elorde three times, losing twice and drawing one. Former world champions "Bad Boy From Dadiangas" Rolando Navarette, Rene Barrientos and Gerry Penalosa were also honored.

A slew of Cebu-based boxers were also given awards headed Czar Amonsot, regional champion and most promising boxer. Other Cebu-based international champion and national champion awardees were former world champion Noel Tunacao, Randy Suico, Dondon Sultan, Bert Batawang, Rev Santillan, Dindo Castanares, Jimrex Jaca, Michael Domingo, Elmer Gejon and Bart Abapo.

Perhaps as a fitting tribute to Cebu's contribution to Philippine boxing, the organizers of the Elorde Awards, headed by Flash Elorde's son Johnny, and widow Laura, announced that next year's awarding will most likely be held in Cebu. A fitting tribute indeed because the great Flash Elorde himself was born, raised, and started his boxing career in Cebu.

Incidentally, PhilBoxing.com, which bagged a citation from the Elorde Awards, and MannyPacquiao.ph, the de facto website of Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao, are also based in Cebu.

Other luminaries who made their presence felt in the eventful evening were GAB Chairman Eric R. Buhain, who delivered an inspirational message; Philippine-resident New Zealand referee Bruce McTavish, who delivered a message to the Elorde family from OPBF Executive Frank Quill; GAB Commissioner Alex Paglumotan; Ted Lerner and Liza Elorde, who acted as the show's hosts; Congressman Butch Pichay; and Paranaque Mayor Florencio Bernabe, Jr.

those names that i highlighted are all cebuanos.. almost all of the country's top pugs are cebuanos mostly from mandaue city..

cebu is indeed the boxing mecca of the philippines..

Resto-bar owner sees rise in industry; market growth
March 28 2006

With the rise of Cebu as a tourist and investment destination, Cebu’s resto-bar industry also sees a bright future ahead, according to an industry player.

According to Yo! Latino of Cebu Inc. vice president Thadeo Jovito Ouano, there is still room for more resto-bars in Cebu, as there is still a big market to tap in the city in terms of fun and entertainment.

The five-year old Yo! Latino, formerly located at the Village inside the Asiatown IT Park in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City reopened just this month at a new and bigger location on Salinas Drive.

“As a businessman, I see an emerging market among the young professionals, who would like to unwind after work,” Ouano said in a statement.

Cater

Yo! Latino also caters to balikbayans and foreigners as well as professionals and contact center agents working in companies located inside the Asiatown, he said.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Rep. Raul del Mar (Cebu City, north) graced the occasion. Cebu Provincial Board Member Victor Maambong, Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Cebu City Chapter head Gloria Lastimosa- Dalawampu and Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano, among others, were also present during the occasion.

To distinguish the resto-bar from its competitors, Yo! Latino offers a garden, balcony and fine dining aside from its “state-of-the-art” sound system,” he said.

Plans

Opening the restaurant during lunchtime is one of immediate plans the company is looking at.

They would like to serve the needs of employees, who would like to take a break from work, Ouano said

Yo! Latino was recently recognized by Appetite Magazine as the Best Barkada Joint in Cebu.

This has positioned the establishment as the resto-bar for the yuppies and the middle-end market.

-construction supposed to start this summer
-by a Korean investor who has bussinesses in Guam and New York

yup! you're right. backpackers and bed&breakfast accommodation lang. even Vietnam registered more tourists than in the Philippines yet we got higher receipts value. which means, we got high-end tourists and big money spenders.

in relation to this, an article published in Nov 2005:

Cebu’s tourism ‘cheap,’ worth more - hotel exec

Cebu does not have to project itself as a cheap tourist destination to be able to compete with other international destinations such as Phuket and Singapore, according to a hotel executive.

“Cebu has been getting the interest of tourists worldwide, especially after what happened to Thailand. But you (Cebuanos) are underselling yourself. Hotels and resorts should rate their services according to the (level) of experience their guests would have in the hotel; and hotels in Cebu have lots to offer their guests,” said Koos Klein, Hilton International’s president for the Middle East and Asia Pacific operation.

He said Cebu’s tourism industry is growing “very fast” because the province has everything to offer to tourists including safety and the hospitality of its people.

“So why position yourself as a cheap destination?” Klein asked.

Cebu has 3 big employment sources, the reason why Cebu has high employment rate.

The 1st top employer is the MACTAN EXPORT PROCESSING ZONE that gave jobs to more or less 70,000 individuals. The second is the SERVICE INDUSTRY such as hotels and tourist spots and the third is the OUTSOURCING or the CALL CENTER INDUSTRY that is one of the boggest contributor of Cebu's economy. In the end it will rebound to the industries or service related of where we wanna buy our needs.

However, DOLE observed a drastic increase of non Cebuano jobseekers who came in Cebu this March expecting job oppurtunities waiting for them here, coz of this problem DOLE is convincing call center companies to open up in Dimaguete or Bohol. TV Patrol Central Visayas

Bigfoot Entertainment Began Filming in Hong Kong With International Cast and Crew on March 27

HONG KONG, March 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Bigfoot Entertainment is taking an
unusual approach with its next project, "Irreversi." Filming in both English
and Mandarin, this feature film will have two versions made simultaneously
with two sets of separate casts.
Bigfoot Entertainment CEO Kacy Andrews explains the rationale behind this
move as "an out of the box approach to generating specific appeal to both
Asian and Western audiences."
"We want to make films that genuinely respect their markets instead of
just have them subtitled or dubbed," elaborates Andrews, who is also
producing. "Furthermore, while filming in two languages presents logistical
problems, our proper scheduling and planning -- together with the support of
an experienced local Hong Kong team -- enables us to pull off something unique
in making these two films at the same time."
Making his directing debut is German-born Michael Gleissner, who also
wrote the screenplay and conceptualized the dual language film. As Executive
Producer on Bigfoot-funded films such as "3 Needles" (Lucy Liu), "East
Broadway" (Margaret Cho), "Shanghai Kiss"(Kelly Hu) and the recent "The
Curiosity of Chance" (Tad Hilgenbrinck), the 36-year-old has decided to up his
creative ante by helming both versions of the film.
Gleissner began his foray into directing with a series of music videos.
He co-wrote another feature film, "Cockfight," which begins production later
this year at Bigfoot's production facilities in Cebu, Philippines.
"Bigfoot Entertainment is extremely excited to bring Michael's unique
vision to fruition," Andrews says.
"Irreversi" is a powerful drama about an overnight millionaire who plots
the perfect murder of his beautiful wife. The film begins principal
photography at the end of March and stars Mei Melancon ("X-Men 3: The Last
Stand," "Deadwood," "CSI"), Ian Bohen ("Marigold," "Cold Case," "JAG"), Kenny
Doughty ("Elizabeth," "Titus," "Crush," "The Aryan Couple"), and Estella
Warren ("Kangaroo Jack," "Driven," "Planet of the Apes").
Andrews and Lisa Schahet ("The Curiosity of Chance") will produce the
English version of "Irreversi," and two fast rising Asian names have also
attached themselves to the project. Elliot Tong is producing the Chinese
version with Andrews and Schahet, while Chu Chen On will serve as Co-Producer
on both versions.
A graduate of New York University film school, Elliot Tong has experience
in both writing screenplays and production. Tong's credits include
"Mr. Magoo" for Walt Disney and "Martial Law" for CBS. He worked with
Emmanuel Carrere in "La Moustache," which was selected for Cannes 2005
Director's Fortnight and released in France in July 2005. He also co-produced
the acclaimed indie hit "Ichi the Killer," with Japanese cult director Takashi
Mikke. His Hong Kong credits include working on Stephen Chow's "Shaolin
Soccer" and "Kung Fu Hustle," and Stanley Kwan's "The Accident." He also
co-wrote "Police Story 4: First Strike," which starred Jackie Chan.
Chen Chu On has worked on Hollywood blockbusters such as "Tomb Raider -
The Cradle of Life," "Spy Game," "Die Another Day," and "Rush Hour 1" and "2,"
providing the local logistical support and framework for these international
productions.
"On the challenges of adapting the screenplay, language will not be the
only difference between the 2 versions" says Tong. "The character treatment,
editing style, and cinematography will also be different."
"We're happy to have On and Elliot onboard for "Irreversi" to bring this
suspenseful dark love story to life," says Andrews.
Bigfoot Entertainment is also the parent company of the International
Academy of Film and Television. Located in Cebu, Philippines, the institution
is extending an opportunity to aspiring filmmakers to be part of the exciting
and diverse production team.
For the first time, the IAFT invites film and communication arts students
from any tertiary school or university to be part of the production of
"Irreversi." The internship gives select students access to the set of
"Irreversi" in Hong Kong from early April 2006 through the beginning of May
when production wraps, where they will experience a working set of a feature
film through immersion. The program also helps students develop
self-confidence and independence as well as to widen their network, a vital
consideration for up-and-coming filmmakers.

Philippines: Restarting of Southeast Asia's largest copper mine hailed

Rep. Eduardo Gullas welcomed Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp.'s plan to restart what was once Southeast Asia's largest copper mining operation after more than a decade out of commission.

Gullas said the revival of mining operations would energize Toledo City and Cebu province.

"The resumption of mining activities will mean new jobs and more income not only for thousands of Cebuano families, but also for local governments," he said.

At the peak of Atlas' operations in the 1970s through the 1980s, Toledo had a full-grown mining community within the city, complete with housing, schools, a hospital, small shops and recreation facilities for up to 14,000 mine workers.

The Toledo copper mine is estimated to have 873 million tons of mineral reserves worth roughly $3 billion.

Atlas earlier said it was finalizing plans to raise up to US$ 170 million to resume mining operations next year through a newly organized unit, Carmen Copper Corp.

The plan involves a US$ 33-million placement by a foreign investment fund, Crescent Asian Special Opportunities Portfolio, in exchange for a 34-percent stake in Carmen Copper.

Carmen Copper also intends to pre-sell future copper output and offer shares of stock to the investing public to generate more cash.

Gullas expressed confidence that Carmen Copper would be able to raise the required equity financing.

"There is enormous global demand for shares of stocks in mining companies owing to soaring metal prices. This is the perfect time for existing and new mining concerns to raise capital via the stock market," he said.

Atlas' massive mining business, which began in 1955, is cantered in two open pit mines, two underground mines and milling complexes.

Atlas produced copper concentrates and gold, with silver and pyrites as major by-products, before mining operations were shut down in 1994 due to a slump in metal prices.

A few years before it suspended mining activities, publicly listed Atlas was the subject of a celebrated proxy fight between Alfredo Ramos and Andres Soriano III. Both businessmen have significant equity stakes in Atlas up to now.

S. Korean Hotel Chain To Expand in Cebu
28th, 2006 by jorge

Cebu has been the most preferred tourist destination in the Philippines for many years, especially for East Asian travellers. In past years, Japanese tourists dominated the number of foreign visitors to Cebu until two years ago when Korean tourists overtook them and have taken the position ever since.

Cebu, as a tourist destination, has been growing at a faster rate than any other places in the country that resulted to accommodation shortage in recent years prompting the Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 to encourage local and forein investors to build more hotels and related facilities to accommodate the growing tourist arrivals in the province.

Some of the foreign investors who are now taking heed of the agency’s call are mostly Korean businessmen. The most recent Korean investor to enter the hotel industry is the Imperial Palace Hotel chain. The Seoul-based hotel chain will sign a deal to build a hotel in the Philippines, particularly in Mactan Island, becoming the first South Korean hotel chain to branch out overseas.

The Imperial Palace Hotel is the latest addition to Korean-owned hotel and residential investments in Cebu in less than a year. The other projects include a five-star resort hotel and condominium complex in Marigondon, (also in Mactan) and a high-rise condomium project at Cebu Business Park.

The agreement, to be signed today with Manila’s BXT Corp., calls for the construction of a 15-story 668-room hotel on Mactan Island in the central part of the Philippines by October next year.

Group to develop Cebuano film industry, local actor

A Cebu-based independent film producer is asking Cebuanos and the entire Visayan-speaking community to support the local film industry.

Sugbu Films Philippines Inc. (Sugbu Films) president Ignacio “Boy” Mendoza said the industry, which needs to develop further, has a big potential considering the innate talents of the Cebuanos.

“The main objective of Sugbu Films is to raise the standard of the local film industry at par with that of Metro Manila’s. This is why we are asking the help of Tom (Po), a Manila-based consultant,” he said.

Event director Tom Po has worked with television networks in Manila. He joined Sugbu Films last month and serves as the company’s creative consultant, Mendoza said.

“I am here because I believe in the big potential of Cebu’s film industry. Someone has to begin to stimulate its growth, and that would be Sugbu Films,” Po said.

Sugbu Films will be launched on Saturday at the second level bridgeway of the Ayala Food and Entertainment Center.

The launching, dubbed “Sugbu Films: The Red Carpet Launch,” will also introduce new premier Cebu-ano artists.

Share vision

It will be attended by local government officials, including Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, who share the Sugbu Film’s vision of growing Cebu’s local film production industry, Po said.

Po expressed his gratitude to the management of Ayala Center Cebu for supporting Sugbu Films.

“Part of the thrust of Ayala Center Cebu is to support community projects especially in the field of arts and culture. This is why we also venture into partnering with certain groups, clubs and organizations in these fields,” Ayala Center marketing manager Joy Polloso said.

In a separate interview, Aldeguer Group of Companies (AGD) president Jay Aldeguer said Destinations Media Inc.-Cebu 28 is willing to support the endeavors of Sugbu Films and other independent local film producers, as long as they represent the Cebuano values of innovativeness and creativity.

Cebu 28 is a member of the AGD.

Sugbu Films is financed by Mendoza, who owns facial clinic Nouveau Visage, and Yuri Barameda, proprietor of ANCB Finance Corp. and Debcarm Resources Corp.

Mendoza said earlier they spent almost P1 million to purchase film production equipment, such as video cameras, lighting and editing machines.

Sugbu Films is working on its second television series titled “Luyo sa Panganod,” which will be shown by a local cable channel soon. (JBN)

Cebuanos dominate awards

Cebu-based boxing personalities dominated the 7th Gabriel “Flash” Elorde Awards Night, also known as the “Banquet of Champions,” last Sunday in Makati City.

Except for the “Boxer of the Year Award,” which went to Manny Pacquiao, and the Elorde Golden Belt that was given to the World boxing Council (WBC) super-flyweight champion Brian Viloria, other awards went to Cebu-based boxers, managers and promoters. They were lauded for their outstanding contribution to Philippine boxing last year.

SGG Sports Promotions’ Sammy Gello-ani was named Promoter of the Year, while Rex “Wakee” Salud was named Manager of the Year.

Boholano teen sensation ALA Boy Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion, and Mandaue City’s Rodel Mayol, the Orient and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) 105-pound king, were handed the 2005 Regional Champion Awards uncontested.

Bautista, now under a promotional contract with the Golden Boy Promotions, is gearing up for another US appearance on May 20, while Mayol is heating up his preparations for his world-title challenge against Japan-based Thai boxer Eagle Kyowa on May 6 in Japan.

Promising boxers

ALA Gym’s Czar Amonsot of Tagbilaran City was hailed the “Most Promising Boxer” with the former WBC flyweight champion and current OPBF bantamweight titlist Malcolm Tuñacao, ex-OPBF 130lb champion Randy Suico, RP welterweight king Dondon Sultan, World Boxing Association Pan-African 108lb champion Bert Batawang, OPBF welterweight titlist Rev Santillan, World Boxing Federation super-lightweight champion Dindo Castañares, RP super-featherweight titleholder Jimrex Jaca, RP bantamweight king Michael Domingo, ex-RP mini-flyweight champion Elmer Gejon and RP lightweight king Bart Abapo.

The boxing website Philboxing.com of Cebuano Dong Secuya was given citation. Secuya also maintains the de facto website of Pacquiao, Mannypacquiao.ph.

With Cebuanos dominating the awards, organizers Johnny and Laura Elorde, son and widow of the late boxing great, announced that the awards night will likely be held in Cebu next year to give a fitting tribute to the Filipino boxing legend, who was born and raised in Bogo, Cebu.

RP comes close to India in ICT growth
Sunstar March 29, 2006 issue

The Philippines is now aggressively competing with India in the field of information and communications technology (ICT) and ICT-enabled services.

Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) executive director and second Cebu ICT Summit executive director Bonifacio Belen said recent researches show that the country now comes second to India in ICT growth.

“In fact, there are now lots of locators in India (that are) considering to move to the Philippines because the country has been discovered also as a good place to operate in,” he told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview.

Expensive labor

He explained that India’s labor rate is about 10 percent higher than the Philippines, which is one reason locators would be attracted to come to the country.

Cebu has around 2,000 graduates of ICT every year.

But Belen noted that “much still has to be done” to make some of them qualify and be competitive.

Together with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Cebu Provincial Government, Cedf-it will launch today the three-month long second Cebu ICT Strategy Summit.

Next steps

The summit will gather all ICT stakeholders to map out “next steps” in promoting Cebu as a globally competitive ICT player and to document specific strategic plans in the next five years to mold the province into a world-class ICT Hub.

But Clarito Fruelda, chairman of the summit steering committee, said that for the country to continue developing its edge and competitiveness, it has to challenge its ICT professionals to pursue higher IT studies.

“India has a thousand of IT practitioners with Ph.D.s (doctorate degrees) but how many do we have? We only have a few because the bright ones are lured by the offer of the industry here or abroad. They don’t pursue (further) studies,” he said.

He added that IT entrepreneurs should also be supported by the government by giving them incentives like tax holidays because taxes are an added cost to the budding industry.

“When you hamper them that way, they lose appetite,” he said.

He added that the issue on intellectual property (IP) is another “weak point” of the country.

“To enhance and make our ICT industry a fast forward development, we get partners from outside. If they don’t feel protected, they will be hesitant to come. But it’s good because we are now looking into our IP issues more seriously,” he said.

when's the definitive date for the construction of that proposed cebu LRT/monorail? i think if they're ever going to make one they should have it start from danao and end up in naga. just one single line so it could be cheaper... one station for each city/municipality. of course cebu city could have two or three...

Yup, the proposed LRT/MRT Project will run from Carcar to Danao City. It will traverse the original route of the old Cebu Railway.

But this project will be implemented in phases so there's a possibility that the first phase would involve the main urban center only so meaning from Tabunok in Talisay City up to Mandaue City.

Congressman Gullas knows better about this since he strongly advocated for its implementation before congress ends...

how about that third bridge?

LordCarnal
March 29th, 2006, 12:38 PM
There are talks though but I don't think they're taking it seriously..

Here's an aerial of Cebu City. If they're going to build a third bridge starting at the SRP (since that's where the plan to build is) going to Mactan, then it would be very, very expensive.. How much more with an underground tunnel which Mandaue City Mayor Ouano wanted to have... Hehehe

Anyhow, there's no serious plan for it as of the moment I guess. Not even a feasibility study.

the ICT industry in Cebu does not focus merely in call center operations. As a matter of fact, the number of web and software developers (firms) in cebu is greater than the number of established callcenters here. D rin nagpapahuli ang other companies which develop IT chips and other hardwares.

I just read this news clip and i dont know if its true. For sure we will host the ASEAN Summit, but APEC? There's no fuzz about it.

The two presidents [Bush and GMA] could also meet when the Philippines hosts this year’s Asian Pacific Economic (APEC) forum. Bush is expected to attend the annual leaders’ meeting of presidents and prime ministers in Cebu, central Philippines. But the APEC forum won’t be held until November, or eight months from now.

its a convention center... so i think its the BEST venue in cebu...
and they could put up a cultural/museum thing in there for the litttle kids, and the tourists so they can learn as well...better make it interactive...
i just had an irrigation from my ENT doctor and he said that he and his little kids were disappointed that the good museums in cebu were no that accessible to middle-income families... if there were any...they didnt know where to go...
he said that he couldnt bring his kids to the beaches despite it being the best...coz it would be awkward...

^^ oops sorry for that. here's the full article.

Hosting int'l conventions boosts economy of Cebu

CEBU CITY, Mar. 15(PNA) -- Cebu should continue to bid for the hosting of international events and conventions to boost the economy as well as add revenues to local companies, a tourism executive said.

Robert Lim Joseph, president of the National Association of Independent Travel Agents (NAITAS) and Skal International Makati chapter president, also said both associations will bid for two major events, the Skal International Asian Assembly and the 5th Global Filipino Networking Convention.

Joseph said that each foreign tourist spends between 750 US dollars and 1,000 US dollars for a three night-four day stay in Cebu.

He noted Skal assembly is estimated to attract a minimum of 240 and a high of 600 participants, Joseph said.

This means that this event alone would pour in between P11 million and P15 million into the local economy, he said.

He also noted that it is important for Cebu to provide a good impression since the Skal assembly delegates are frontliners in the tourism industry.

If Cebu wins the bid, tourism stakeholders will have the opportunity to promote Cebu directly to the industry representatives.

He said he and Skal International Cebu chapter president Efren Belarmino, who is also the general manager of Plantation Bay Resort and Spa, will be bidding for the event.

Skal International national president and Asia area director Charles Lim is also Cebu-based.

Skal International, a worldwide organization of 22,000 members in the travel and tourism industry, has four chapters in the Philippines in Manila, Makati, Cebu and Davao.

Skal is a professional organization of tourism leaders around the world and is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry.

Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest.

Joseph said NAITAS also plans to bid for the 5th Global Filipino Networking convention.

"We will be going to the 4th Global Filipino Networking Convention, which will be held on Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 in Hawaii," he said.

The 3rd Global Filipino Networking Convention was held in Cebu City in 2004, which attracted about 1,000 delegates.

Joseph said that Loida Nicolas Lewis, chairperson of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), was impressed with the way the convention was organized here.

However, he urged Cebu's tourism stakeholders to offer additional attractions instead of just depending on its beach and diving.

Joseph said Cebu could develop tourism products by tapping its various industries.

The furniture and fashion accessory manufacturers, he said, could offer plant tour as part of packages, with tourists given the chance to buy the products at the end of the visit.(PNA)

bai, did you undergo the same procedure such as this?:

"Nasal Irrigation can potentially be the most therapeutic measure in completely eliminating a sinus infection. It can help quickly and dramatically. I've heard from people who have had an infection for months that within two days of beginning irrigation, the infection was gone, and did not return, even if irrigation was not continued beyond a few days."
