bakasaurus May 25th, 2012, 12:47 PM Sorry OT ni mga bai:
Friends,
If there is anyone interested about a "gig". I got invitation to bid for my photo services for a real estate services firm based in Manila mostly for developments in BGC, Makati, Bay area and Ortigas. They want to hire your services to take professionally shot photos of 4 building properties and some skyline/landscape photos of BGC, Makati CBD, Ortigas, Eastwood and Alabang.
I would have wanted to do it even for a cheap price just for the experience if I were there. Hehe.
Anyone interested, please PM me your email address so I can forward to you the full details and endorse you to the firm.
Thanks and good luck.
Special mention: Gibb, Markii, Slerz (hahahaha kung ganahan ka muuli bai!). Pwede pod si Sir Rusty, wakeuptoreality kay naa siya bag-o DSLR. Bisan kinsa bitaw nga interesado please PM me. Sayang ang chance.

Hahaha...bitaw bai sa? Murag magtan-aw ka nila kay mura sila og nag Linggo ng Wika tibuok adlaw. Hehe. I think these photos were shot on a Sunday, or during a Holiday.
I always find it a beautiful sight and I especially like how it contrasts with the modernity and all in the background. I think it reminds me how cities even if they change with time, and technology may advance, at the heart of cities are still the people and our culture. Seeing them like that always gives me the perspective of how fluid everything is, that change may be inevitable, but somehow we are connected to our past. It makes me feel connected to the people who lived before us and used to walk these streets. The unbroken link of humans. In our case, the photo reminds me of Cebuanos in the past, who I'm sure, had their own worries about their day to day lives, who might have tried to divine the future, who had passions, too, and who I'm sure also loved Cebu in their own ways.
Zuburbia May 25th, 2012, 01:19 PM ^^
i could also imagine bai baka, that maybe one of those in the photos might have been contributed or has a big part of my genetic makeup... hahaha..im just proud of my native visayan blood, and my brown color!!!

ang formal dress siguro sa mga cebuanos kaniadto mao ang "terno" sa akong na dungan kon magsul-ob na akong lola sa iyang siga2x nga long gown i dont know what cloth was it basta fine quality unya sa lalaki mao ang barong. but ngano man gyud nga panganlan man sa taga manila ug barong tagalog or sa mga babaye "maria clara" kuno na nga style nga dunay pa bugdo2x sa shoulder. nganong angkonon man dayon nila nga maayo ug sila ang first spanish settlement nga makaingon ta nga nangupya na nila.
the way cebuanons dress during the spanish times is basically influenced by how men and women in europe are dressed via mexico and not how people up north are dressed. wala silay katungod nga nganlan ang national dress as maria clara and barong tagalog kay wala gyud ko kadungog nga moingon ang akong katigulangan nga magsul-ob sila ana. ako gyud madunggan kay mag terno sila kay dunay special nga tambungan.

France readies medium-term assistance program for PH
source: interaksyon.com (http://www.interaksyon.com/article/32703/france-readies-medium-term-assistance-program-for-ph)
MANILA - France is preparing a medium-term assistance program for the Philippines.
Luc Le Cabellec, Philippine country director of the Agence Francaise de Developpement, said the two- to three-year program would be ready by yearend.
"We are preparing a medium term strategy with the Philippine government so by end of this year, we will have a draft for consideration so definitely its concentration will be on an annual basis but we are looking for a medium term partnership," le Cabellec said.
AFD and the National Economic and Development Authority on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding for such an assistance program.
Among the projects lined up for AFD financing are the following:
Green and Sustainable Urban Planning,
Local Government Financing and Budget Reform Phase 2,
Environmental Credit Facility,
Philippine National Oil Co. - Renewables Corp.'s Development Investment Program,
Climate Change Mitigation Program,
Cebu and Davao Water Supply and Sanitation,
Bus Rapid Transit Project, and a
Mindanao Agro-Forestry Project
The French aid agency, which set up shop two years ago, will provide concessional loans ranging from 100 to 200 million euros a year that would be used to promote green and inclusive economic growth in the Philippines.
The loans have tenors of 15 years, but the recipient has a grace period of another five years. Interest rates would be based on the Euro InterBank Offered Rate.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3F7kRUJzvKE/T5B0EpVQ5uI/AAAAAAAAFkU/66isP8ztQTE/s640/life+dance+poster.jpg
Life Dance, the country's biggest outdoor dance party will hit Cebu's floor on May 26, Saturday at The Boardwalk Complex, FF Cruz Reclamation Area Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines. I think this would be the biggest and Life Dance 2012 will set and change Cebu's standard and party scene! Did I mention that all place will be a HOT SPOT on that day? Yes, the team is working with PLDT so that Party animals can post live on their facebook or twitter for updates and what crazy stuff went on! This will TREND!!!!
LIFEDANCE 2012: Awakening
LifeDance 2012 was born out of love and passion for dance/ house music and the dream of mounting an event of the same format that people with same interest have been looking forward in years to experience. Patterned after some of the most anticipated dance events held worldwide annually such as, Sensation of the Netherlands, TomorrowLand of Belgium and Singapore’s Zouk Out, LifeDance is Cebu’s take on these international dance/ house events that is sure to bring you a visual feast of the senses offering a vast floor space, massive staging, state-of-the-art lighting effects and pyrotechnics as well as an extraordinary line-up of performances.
As we envision LifeDance to become an annual event, we look forward to providing an entertainment extravaganza that will be comparable to its worldwide counterparts, eventually.

Tiobong is a cassava starch and not generally edible unless you know how it was prepared.Today you will hear news of cassava cyanide poisoning for mistaking it with corn starch to prepare food.. Before wash and wear, and plastic derivatives products were invented, a stiff "quello" , a well iron shirt and pants were only possible by soaking it on a light mixture of tiobong and warm water before drying the laundry..
http://cdn.nuts.com/images/auto/510x340/assets/99fba786198892e3.jpg
Tiobong differs from corn starch. You will see lumps all the time and non-gritty.
Treated clothes will not stink easily as left over like kan-on bugas.
If it is labeled Tapioca starch, it is intended for food preparation.
I've learned these from a business doing distribution and production for 50+ yrs. on these food and consumer products.

cyberCEBU May 27th, 2012, 07:51 AM Resurvey results worry Mabolo home owners
An 80-year-old house beside the Mabolo Church may lose its grotto, concrete fence and 12 trees for a road widening project that will precede the rise of a flyover.
The trees are at least 30 years old.
House owner Aurora Ancajas Ramos, 76, learned about this along with 25 other affected house owners in last night’s presentation of the second survey done by the Department of Public Works and Highways in Central Visayas (DPWH-7).

cebu norte May 28th, 2012, 04:34 AM Law to let LGU’s tax biz sales filed
January 16, 2012
SIX Cebu mayors expressed their support for Senate Bill 42, which is aimed to declare 90 percent sales of businesses as taxable by the city or municipality where the factory, project office, plant or plantation is located.
City Mayors Valdemar Chiong (City of Naga), Aurelio Espinosa (Toledo City) and Celestino Martinez Jr. (Bogo), Mayors Democrito “Aljon” Diamante (Tuburan), Ricardo Ramirez (Medellin) and Ace Binghay (Balamban) said it will increase the income of the local government units (LGUs).
They said they are happy that Sen. Vicente Sotto III introduced the bill so their localities will be prioritized in the sharing of sales tax from investors who have existing business or for businesses that will locate in their towns and cities in the future.
Common practice
In his explanatory note, Sotto said that before the enactment of Republic Act (RA) 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code, the common concern of local officials was the practice of the National Government of allowing businesses to pay their sales tax in the locality where their principal office is located.
This means that even if the manufacturing firms have branches and plants in Cebu, they are paying sales tax in Manila or Makati where their headquarters are based. The localities, which are hosting the plants and are providing the transportation facilities such as roads, are holding an empty bag.
Sotto wants to reverse the situation wherein the LGUs hosting the plants and branches shall collect 90 percent of the sales tax while the cities and municipalities where they are holding principal office shall only be entitled to tax 10 percent of the sales.
These businesses include manufacturers, assemblers, importers and plantations, whose earnings mostly come from the operations in the provinces, cities or municipalities outside Metro Manila.
Benefits
Chiong said the City of Naga will benefit if Senate Bill No. 42 will be passed into law, considering that it is hosting the plant of Apo Cement Corp., which is selling cement products nationwide and its principal office is in Manila.
Toledo City, on the other hand, will benefit from the passage of the bill because it is hosting Carmen Copper Corp., a mining firm that is exporting copper and gold, but with principal office in Manila.
Bogo City will soon host Robinsons Mall, hence, Martinez said his administration will benefit if the bill is enacted into law.

The USS Pearl Harbor, an amphibious dock landing ship of the United States Navy, docked at the Cebu International Port today for a goodwill visit. It will be opened to the officers and personnel of the Philippines’ Naval Forces Central (Navforcen) for a tour. For the crew of the USS Pearl Harbor, it will be a chance at rest and recreation as well as to replenish supplies. It is the first vessel to carry the name Pearl Harbor to commemorate the heroism of those who died in the attack of the Hawaiian island of Oahu in 1941. Although it carries no aircraft, it has two landing spots and has an estimated value of $258 million.

In real world, the US Expats key question would be if Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu now aligned w/ St, Lukes Medical? St. Luke's Manila w/c is the only Philipppine Medical institution that US Medicare will approve payments. US Washington decisions are on per case basis.

PINOYmeat May 28th, 2012, 10:27 AM Building cities
by Serene Lim
Despite designing a condo that put Miami on the map, renowned architect Bernardo Fort-Brescia says cities are not defined by a single structure.
Singapore - Architecture buffs know his name. But even the uninitiated would have seen pictures of, or perhaps even walked into, one of Bernardo Fort-Brescia's creations.
The popular shopping mall Festival Walk in Hong Kong, for example; the Westin Hotel Times Square in New York; and, of course, the building that first made everyone in Miami take notice: The Atlantis Condominium, with its daring hollowed cut-out in the centre where a red corkscrew-style staircase, a jacuzzi and a large palm tree stand.
And now Singapore will have a similar version coming up with Far East Organization's Orchard Scotts condominium. It isn't, however, the only project Fort-Brescia has in this part of the world. He's also designing Alba at Cairnhill Rise, as well as SM Seaside City Cebu, which is said to soon change the landscape and pave the way for greater redevelopment in the Philippine city.

"mga bro do you have any idea about the ongoing construction of Kool Adventure Camp?it is located in balamaban right beside the transcentral highway. i think its a theme park because the area is relatively vast, though theres no perspective outside the constrcution site. but i think its a nice development."
sa akong nahibaw-an this is an adventure camp similar to 'Outward Bound Singapore'.
You can check here kung unsa ni siya: http://www.obs.pa.gov.sg/
They have ziplines, wall-climbing, kayaking etc... activities. but di ni cya open to the public. kung gusto ka moadto, kinahanglan group mo unya pa-reserve in advance but naa sila program/activities while naa sa camp nga i-follow (like leadership training. etc).
the good thing is priority nila ang students and free ang naa sa public. hopefully within the last quarter kay mo-open na ni sila.
Ang developer ani kay usa ka dakong local developer nga naa'y real estate, electric company, unya di ni chismis :D

Chain opens 60 branches in 2 years
IN just two years, drugstore chain Three Sixty Pharmacy has managed to open 60 branches in Cebu and neighboring provinces.
Business development manager Carlo Yap said that of the 20 additional branches they are planning to open this year, 10 of these will be outside Cebu. Currently, they have two branches each in Tacloban and Bohol. They want to open another one in Bohol, three more in Tacloban, two in Dumaguete City, one in Bacolod, two in Iloilo and one in Tagum, Davao.
Part of their optimism about their expansion activities in Cebu has been fueled by other retailers opening in the province. They noted the quick opening of SM and Savemore branches. There are also reported plans of convenience store chain 7 Eleven to open a branch here. “We are happy for the local economy of Cebu.”

@snipcebu

Cebu wrests Cobra Ironman 2012 from CamSur
Cebu will be hosting the country’s top triathlon event, the 2012 Cobra Ironman 70.3 on August 5, 2012, at the Shangri-La Mactan Island Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City.
Sunrise events, Inc. general manager Princess Galura said the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) told them to look for another venue because WTC wanted the 1.2-mile swim on an open sea instead of a manmade lake like in Camarines Sur, which hosted the early editions of the Cobra 70.3.

“In Cebu, we saw the beginning of a public-private partnership 22 years ago,” the former governor said. He referred to a partnership between the Ayala Group and Cebu Province that led to the Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp.
National government officials at that time had questioned the partnership, Congressman Garcia recalled, but they yielded as there was no law that prohibited the practice.
Now, two decades later, the national leadership is encouraging PPPs, he pointed out.
Capitol is also pursuing at least two other PPP ventures: the P702-million Cebu Bulk Water Supply Project with the Manila Water Consortium and the Ciudad commercial complex with Fifth Avenue Development Corp.

Kim Bol Jon May 29th, 2012, 04:48 AM Naga wins DILG award for good governance
By Liv G. Campo

May 29, 2012 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - The City of Naga was recently awarded the Seal of Good Housekeeping by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for good governance. The bronze plaque, which was given to the city last May 25 at the Cebu International Convention Center, was for its good governance performance in internal housekeeping particularly in the areas of Good Planning, Sound Fiscal Management, Transparency and Accountability and Valuing Performance Management.
According to the DILG’s website, the Seal of Good Housekeeping Award is in view of the department’s commitment “to aggressively scale up interventions to elevate the practice of governance that values transparency, accountability, participation and performance into an institutionalized status.”
The award reportedly comes with a P1.3 million grant, which Mayor Valdemar Chiong said the city has yet to receive.

it should have been by region ang representation sa Senate 2 senators in every region pero 1 senator to be voted every 3 years with 6 year term, tan-awa ron di ba mangugat pa si gwen ug suroy sa tibuok Pilipinas para makakuha ug bot ug wa pud ta kabalo gigamit ang pondo sa kapitolyo ani, ug daghan kaayo siya ug atbangon labi na mga artista pa jud.
kung naa gani i amend sa atong constitution, iamend ang paagi sa pagpili sa senador ug kanang 60/40 sa paghimo ug business sa mga foreign investors.

mAiNsTrEaMhunter May 30th, 2012, 03:42 PM Safety on the Road
By Luis A. Quibranza III, SunStar Daily
Wednesday | May 30, 2012
When it comes to road safety, sometimes 'not being on the offensive' isn't enough anymore. Just like a true and tested basketball team with championship mettle, it pays to play defense.
One has heard it probably during lectures before a person is about to be given his or her driver's license -- the need for defensive driving. Indeed, there's no such thing as being careful enough on the road. For a progressive city like Cebu, motorists and pedestrians alike should be reminded about safety issues especially now that Road Safety Month is being celebrated nationwide.
Well for starters, the common sight where dozens of people still jaywalk beneath skywalks during rush hour. What's up with that really? "My first assumption is that people are rational creatures. If they feel that the effort and time spent to go up and down the skywalk is not commensurate to the risk of accident involved in crossing the road, or there is little risk of accident in crossing at road level, they will disregard the skywalk," reveals Rafael Christopher L. Yap, executive director of the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM).
"Having said that, how should we promote use of the skywalk if it is indeed warranted? My philosophy is that the infrastructure must always take into consideration its user. Among the biggest issues of skywalks is its accessibility. So if there is enough land area, why not retrofit the stairs to be a ramp? That way, children in strollers, the elderly and those carrying many packages can utilize them too."
Sure, pedestrians can get pretty reckless, but that does not excuse motorists from throwing caution to the wind. For Rafael, the most common causes for road accidents are pretty much summed up with these violations: The failure to follow the right of way rule, counter flowing against the flow of traffic and over speeding.
But it's not something Cebu has to deal with exclusively. At least that's how Rafael sees it.
"Beating the red light, failure to follow the right of way rule, illegal parking on roadway, (these) are problems that traffic officials in the country experience on a day to day basis. But I think that one good habit that has not yet caught on in Cebu is the use of seatbelts."
On the bright side, Rafael thinks that driving speeds in Cebu are generally low to medium except along some highways. Also, the popularity of fun runs in the city allows people to get used to accommodating runners and cyclists on the roadway.
Plus, here's a little trivia: Cebu City's system that controls traffic lights are not run by a set time but rather, sensors on the road. Unlike a few intersections that are common in Metro Manila, where drivers seem to look at some huge countdown stopwatch, Cebu has something different to offer.
"We are using the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (Scats). The system takes output from the detector loops underneath the road which measure the volume of vehicles passing thru it and makes corresponding adjustments in the signal timings of each red-yellow-green phrase. This was installed last 1990. The benefits are that you have green times that are reflective of the actual number of vehicles on the road. It also means that in a corridor with several junctions, the traffic lights coordinate with each other to lessen your waiting time at the red light," Rafael explains how technology like this one, increases traffic efficiency and safety.
Lives need not go down just because of irresponsibility on the road. When a person drives defensively, he may not only save his own life, but the lives of other people around him as well.

from wa'y blima! cebu
So what are Cebuanos like? The best way to find out, of course, is to spend time in Cebu. Meanwhile, here are just a few generalizations to give you a vague idea and lessen your culture shock, if any. Note that, as is always the case when describing a people composed of 3 million individuals, these descriptions don't apply to everyone; these are merely patterns and tendencies of idiosyncracies and peculiarities one eventually recognizes after interacting with many hundreds of individuals. Some traits may be completely imagined by the author of this article; it would be much appreciated if any Cebuanos reading this could alert this website if something is way off the mark.
The first thing this writer noticed is that Cebuanos, more than any other people on this planet, are obssessed with looking good. Now, beauty and a pleasing appearance are prized the world over, but in Cebu these attributes outrank all else by a massive margin. If you get a baby, the most important thing is that it's good-looking, never mind character traits such as intelligence, kindness, diligence, etc. In fact, some might even say that your average Cebuano would rather have a good-looking baby that's deaf, dumb and blind, as opposed to a butt-ugly offspring that, say, delivers a virtuoso performance on the violin.
This obssession with looking good explains, perhaps, why there are more beauty pageants here than anywhere else in the world, and why public transportation is dressed up and made to appear drop-dead gorgeous, even if the innards consist of cannibalized parts discarded as garbage in Japan. It may also explain why, in a conservative Catholic place, almost all females on the better side of 40 dress in extremely sexy, body-hugging clothes: You gotta look good, so you'd better show off those curves! And it is of course no surprise that many ads in the jobs section of the classifieds insist on female applicants with "pleasing personality" - which of course is a euphemism for "pretty." God forbid if a plain girl turned up for the interview; she'd be shown the door in no time, no matter how pleasing her personality.
On another level, the obsession with looking good could explain why Cebuanos avoid confrontation whenever possible. To keep up appearances, Cebuanos will rarely if ever give you bad news, or tell you something that you don't want to hear. Rather, they will backbite - whisper nasty things in private, or send it via text message. The way Cebuanos backbite each other is terrible, all Cebuanos will agree, but whether they realize it or not, the unspoken continuation is that backbiting is not as bad as causing a public fuss and saying nasty things to someone's face.
Now, foreigners - and even some Filipinos - will say that Cebuanos are on something called "Filipino time." This means that Filipinos are not as punctual as members of some other country. And, indeed, you are not considered to be really late even if you arrive 30 minutes past the agreed time. Some foreigners will tell you that the problem is due the fact that there is no standardized time-keeping. This is true. There is no phone line to call to check for the official time. The major cellphone companies keep slightly different times, as do the two major TV networks. They don't even do the "Beep, beep, beep, BEEEP!" at the top of the hour anyway. You can switch from one radio station and go from 8:13 to 7:54. Banks open and close according to the clocks they have on the walls, and if they have two, one may be ahead of the other by 30 minutes (the slower one is used to determine the opening time and the faster one for the closing time).
But this writer, at least, disagrees with this entire notion of Filipino time, because it misses the issue. The issue is not that Filipinos are always late, or lax about being punctual, but that Cebuanos in particular and Filipinos in general are very, very patient. Cebuanos will wait for eons and eons and eons before becoming even slightly upset. Foreigners may find this incredible and exasperating. In jeepneys, at restaurants, and in ATM lines, Cebaunos will wait passively for hours with utmost grace. If someone in a group of people gets worked up about a delay, you can bet your last dollar that it's a foreigner, a balikbayan (a Filipino residing abroad), or a Tagalog.
Patience is a virtue, but, of course, there is a flipside. Namely, Cebuanos will casually let you wait for ages, and react with genuine incomprehension should you throw a hissy fit. Don't bother yelling: "I've been waiting for 30 minutes!" because the tone of the reaction will be, more often than not, "Yes? And? What's the problem? You just wait." This is not really rude. It could be that this degree of patience - or rather, lack of impatience - exists because Cebuanos have never been under intense pressure to bring the harvest home before the onset of winter. It stands to reasons that people whose cultures have evolved in climates where the pace of life is dictated by the seasons tend to be rather more impatient than the denizens of the Philippines, where bountiful produce is available all year round.
Another hugely important characteristic of Cebuanos is that they value privacy less than the people of the West. In fact, privacy barely exists as an acknowledged concept. No Cebuano lives alone. Having spent hardly a waking minute in solitude, Cebuanos are terrified of it. As such, it is a terrible crime to leave someone alone; Cebuanos always expect to be accompanied wherever they go. That is why Cebuanos make a big deal out of parting ways, even for a short time. "I'll just go ahead," they'll say, looking slightly uncomfortable. It is important to try to understand the apprehension a Cebuano feels when being left alone, or when leaving someone alone. Say things like "Take care! Call me! Text me!" even if your companion is just stepping out to get a newspaper.
COMPANIONSHIP
PRIVACY
RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF VALUES

CEBU
Since privacy ranks very low on the Cebuano value scale, it is perhaps understandable that Cebuanos are, by their own confession, extremely nosy. The word is chismoso for male nosy persons, and chismosa for female nosy persons. Cebuanos spend an inordinate of time prying into each others affairs, or, delving into each other lives to share their lives as much as possible - depending how you look at it. Whether it is a positive thing or not, having someone present while you go about your daily affairs, and observing someone while he or she performs a mundane task, is normal in Cebu. Do not be alarmed if the Cebuanos present start observing you carefully and unabashedly should you start doing something even moderately unusual, such as changing the film of a camera. Whereas, if you start unscrewing your false hand in public in the West, people will flicker their eyes at you while pretending not to stare, Cebuanos will actually get up from their seats and come right close so as to get a better look.
It should also be noted that, while roughly half of the traffic jams in Cebu are caused by accidents, the other half are caused by chismoso Cebuanos on the opposing lane slowing right down to a crawl - sometimes even stopping completely - so as to better ogle the goings on at the site of the accident, even if the problem consists of a barely visible scratch on an old and battered taxi, caused by another old and battered taxi. And, needless to say, should a fire or a fight or some other similarly interesting event erupt, a huge crowd will materialize out of nowhere. In Cebu, it is completely OK to be curious and to stare.
It's not immediately obvious, but the Cebuanos are a superstitious people. For instance, no house will be built unless a chicken has been sacrificed and its blood sprinkled about. (Interestingly, after the bood sprinkling, a Catholic Mass will often take place.) Cebuanos will often prefer a witch doctor to take care of their problem rather than a medical doctor. Perhaps it is wrong to call this "superstition," since these beliefs go deep. Very deep. No matter what one says to a Cebuano, these beliefs can never be shaken. It's a Bisdak thing.
I recently heard from an expatriate who was surprised to be castigated by his Cebuana wife when removing a speck of dirt from his newborn baby's forehead. The dirt, it turned out, was a talisman that had been carefully put into place by the mother, in order to make the baby's hiccups go away - Cebuanos believe that attaching a small bit of thread to a baby's forehead with saliva will put an end to hiccups. The expatriate, a biologist by training, blew his stack - throwing a complete fit as only foreigners can do - and explained at great length to his confused wife why the bit of thread could have no possible scientific effect. For good measure, he also assured her that superstition is evil and that he would be sorely disappointed if she were to engage in such superstition ever again. Two weeks later, upon returning unexpectedly to the house, he found the bit of thread on his baby's forehead again. As I said, these beliefs go deep. Our friend should not have been surprised, and instead of throwing an even bigger fit - which is what regretfully he did - he should have been grateful that he didn't catch his wife in bed with a neighbor.
For some reason, Cebuanos love to abbreviate. Cebuanos will abbreviate absolutely anything and everything. The abbreviation may take the form of an acronym: OA (over-acting), DI (dance instructor), GF (girlfriend), BI (bad influence). Example: "Bay, my GF is so OA, she got mad when I said her DI is a BI!"
Alright, so Cebuanos and the Pentagon have a penchant for acronyms. But only Cebuanos abbreviate to the extent that adjectives and adverbs are landed with the roles of nouns. For instance, an ocular inspection becomes an ocular. "Did you prepare for the ocular, Jun?" Which reminds me: Cebuanos abbreviate just about everything, and that includes names. Robert Downey Jr would be known as "Jun" in Cebu. Is your name Victor? Cebuanos will call you "Tor". Whatever your name is, Cebuanos will abbreviate it. Abbreviating is an obsession in Cebu; it's a Bisdak thing.
Even more surprising than the abbreviations are the exaggerations. While most Cebuanos don't lie intentionally, just about all Cebuanos automatically expand the magnitude of the issue in question. For instance, someone whose name you don't even know is a "friend." Someone whom you've met once or twice is "my best friend." Someone who lives in your town is "my neighbor." When late for a meeting, Cebuanos will call or text to say that they are "on the way." This means that they're about to leave, or getting ready to leave. When they're on the way with more than halfway to go, they'll say: "I'm near!" or "I'm almost there!" When they're actually near, they'll say, "I'm there!"
Last, but definitely not least, there's shyness. You may find Cebuanos to be shy to the point of psychiatric disorder. At least, they are shy about some things most people of the world would consider normal, such as eating. Your servants, for instance, will go to extreme lengths to avoid being seen eating in your presence, even if you have encouraged them to take a meal and it is fully within their right to eat. (Strangely, however, once they do get around to the act of eating in your presence, they will have no qualms about belching loudly.) Note that, since most Cebuanos are incredibly shy, you should be a little suspicious if someone - particularly a female if you are male - approaches you and starts making suggestions. No Cebuana I know would ever do that, unless playing a role in some scam.

CEBU, Philippines - Mall developer and operator SM Prime Holdings Inc. is opening its 43rd shopping mall in the country, SM City Consolacion in Cebu, on Friday.
The new shopping mall, which has a gross floor area (GFA) of 106,857 square meters, is located along the Cebu North Road, Barangay Lamac, Consolacion, Cebu. This is the second SM mall in Cebu.
"The region of Cebu remains to be a key expansion area for SM malls. This reflects our continued confidence in the prospects of Cebu, given its dynamic population and flourishing business landscape, especially its vibrant export sector, which contributes significantly to the country’s economic growth," said SM Prime President Hans T. Sy, in a statement.
SM City Consolacion will have a SM Department Store, SM Supermarket, as well as fast food chains Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich, Red Ribbon, Pizza Hut, KFC, and Mang Inasal.
Restaurants serving Cebuano cuisine, such as Chika-an Sa Cebu and Jonie’s Chicken, can also be found in the mall.
After SM City Consolacion, SM Prime is also constructing a P4.5 billion shopping mall in the reclaimed South Road Properties (SRP). The mall, which is targeted to open in the third quarter of 2014, is part of the 30-hectare mixed use development project of SM Prime in Cebu called SM Seaside City.

Robinsons set to build 30th store in Pangasinan
Robinsons Land Corp., the property unit of the Gokongwei group, will soon start the construction of its first shopping mall in Pangasinan, the company’s 30th.
Robinsons Land said in a statement that it build Robinsons Calasiao on a 5.8-hectare property with a gross floor area of 31,900 sq. m. and leasable space of 23,000 square meters. The Pangasinan outlet will bring the total gross floor of 30 Robinsons mall to 1.5 million sq. m.
“We hope to open our door to the warm people of Pangasinan soon. Robinsons Calasiao reflects Robinsons Land’s commitment to expand its chain of malls in the region,” Robinsons Land president Frederick Go said in a statement.
Go said the company chose Calasiao for its first mall in Pangasinan because of the strategic location of the first-class municipality, which is between Dagupan City and San Carlos City.
Robinsons Land has two malls in Pampanga and one each in the provinces of Tarlac, Ilocos Norte, Bulacan and Cabanatuan. The company recently opened a shopping mall in General Santos, South Cotabato and Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental.
Robinsons Land plans to develop a mall in Puerto Princesa in Palawan next year and two more in Cebu and Magnolia in Quezon City in 2012.
Robinsons Land posted a net income of P1.79 billion in the first six months to March 31, 2010, up 10 percent on year, as combined real estate and hotel revenues rose 7 percent to P5.3 billion from P4.9 billion.
The company’s commercial centers division contributed 50 percent or P2.8 billion of the gross revenues from September 2009 to March 31, 2010, up 38 percent.
It said revenues from newly opened malls in Dumaguete, Ilocos Norte, General Santos, Tacloban and Davao accounted for the higher turnover. Metro Manila malls led by Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas also contributed to the growth while other provincial outlets also posted decent rise in rental revenues. Jenniffer B. Austria

Austria
