 Google is you bestfriend this time. hehe. Got this one why it's called "The Philippines":
Spain named our country “Las Islas Filipinas”. When occupied by the Americans, it was translated to English as “The Philippine Islands”. When they departed, we renamed it “The Philippines”.

Wolfranz May 31st, 2012, 04:31 PM ang The Netherlands lage. di baya na sha archipelago.
The reason for the name "The Philippines" is simple: it is a contracted plural form of The Philippine Islands. It does not mean any connotation of prestige nor "But the article “The” being there may mean that the name “The Philippines” is still the property of King Philip II, and therefore remains a colonial name." as the article claims ignorantly and ridiculously.
The Netherlands is not an archipelago but it is still a plural entity composed of 12 provinces that were historically different states. "The Netherlands" is Dutch for "The Low Countries".

gtjr June 1st, 2012, 02:16 AM SM PRIME TO OPEN SM CITY CONSOLACION IN CEBU
Thursday, May 31, 2012
SMPHI IR
(31 May 2012. Pasay City, Philippines.) SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), the Philippines’ dominant mall developer and operator, is set to open its 43rd shopping mall in the country, SM City Consolacion, on Friday, 01 June 2012. The brand new mall, with a gross floor area (GFA) of 106,857 square meters (sqm), is located along the Cebu North Road, Barangay Lamac, Consolacion, Cebu. It is SM Prime’s second mall in the province, after SM City Cebu, which opened in November 1993 and is an 11 kilometer distance away.SM Prime President Mr. Hans T. Sy said, “We warmly welcome all our valued customers to our newest and second mall in Cebu, SM City Consolacion. The region of Cebu remains to be a key expansion area for SM malls. This reflects our continued confidence in the prospects of Cebu, given its dynamic population and flourishing business landscape, especially its vibrant export sector, which contributes significantly to the country’s economic growth.”
SM City Consolacion has a leasable area of 57,842 sqm, 89% of which has already been awarded to various tenants. The shopping mall’s anchor tenants are SM Department Store and SM Supermarket. Among the quick service restaurants located in the mall are Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich, Red Ribbon, Pizza Hut, KFC, and Mang Inasal. Food restaurants serving local Cebuano cuisine such as Chika-an Sa Cebu and Jonie’s Chicken are likewise tenants of SM City Consolacion. Other mall tenants include BDO, Watsons, Ace Hardware, National Bookstore, Ideal Vision, Bench, and Penshoppe, among others. SM City Consolacion’s amenities include a Cyberzone; a food court that comfortably seats up to 668 diners; four cinemas, with a combined seating capacity of 1,488; and parking slots for over 700 vehicles.
Consolacion is a first class residential urban municipality in the province of Cebu. It is part of the Cebu Metropolitan Area (Metro Cebu), which is the second international gateway and the second largest urban area in the Philippines. Consolacion’s major industries are furniture making, garments, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and ship repair. SM City Consolacion brings the total number of SM Prime malls to 43 all over the country, with a combined GFA of 5.2 million sqm. It is the second SM mall to be opened this year, after SM City Olongapo in Zambales, which was inaugurated last February.
In line with SM Prime’s expansion plans for Cebu is the construction of the Php4.5 billion shopping mall in the reclaimed South Road Properties (SRP). The mall is expected to open in the third quarter of 2014 and will boast of a gross floor area of 241,600 square meters, making it Cebu’s biggest mall and fourth among SM malls. It is part of the 30-hectare mixeduse development project of SM Prime in Cebu called SM Seaside City. This is proof of SM’s vision for the growth of Cebu City and the positive impact that its malls have on the lives of Cebuanos.
For the rest of 2012, SM Prime is scheduled to open SM City San Fernando in Pampanga, SM City Lanang in Davao City, SM City General Santos in Southern Mindanao, and SM Chongqing in China. By the end of this year, SM Prime will have 46 malls in the Philippines and five in China with an estimated combined GFA of 6.3 million sqm.

Well, because IMHO, the name Philippines is in its plural form. Most of the time, article 'the' is included when a name is in its plural form (s). It wouldn't sound right if you'd say, I'm going to Philippines or I'm going to Netherlands or I'm going to Bahamas or I'm going to Seychelles or I'm going to United States. There seems to be something missing or lacking in the sentence. I guess it has something to do with proper/right grammar that's why the article 'the' is included. I wouldn't even dwell on the colonialism issue because we are now in the modern age. IMO, The Philippines is a beautiful, very unique, very catchy and marketable name. In marketing, its always very important that a name stands out and can speak for itself.
Another use of article 'the' is it unifies a certain group, like a family e.g. The Garcias, The Osmenas, The Aquinos, etc. or group of mountains e.g. The Alps, The Himalayas, The Appalachians, The Carpathians, The Rockies, The Pyrenees, The Andes, etc. so for a country like ours that is composed of thousands of islands, 'the' is purposely included. It's the same goes with groups of islands like The Camotes (Cebu), The Calamianes (Palawan), The Perhentians (Malaysia), The Aleutians (Alaska), The Galapagos (Ecuador), The Canaries (Spain), The Marianas (USA), The Spratlys, etc.
Note: Grammar is not mathematics so not all rules are absolute. There are always exceptions to the rule like in the case of Indonesia and The Gambia. Indonesia is composed of islands but its rare for people to say The Indonesia or The Indonesian Islands which sounds odd but is grammatically correct. Same with the Gambia, its not an archipelago in Africa but it has the article 'the' on its official name but can also be just Gambia, whichever you prefer. It's almost always the general rule that when a country's name is in its feminine form (a), article 'the' is not anymore included even though if the country/territory is composed of islands like Indonesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, Melanesia, etc.
very OT :D

Very nice and elaborate explanation bai dik. But I always thought the etymology of countries is often more historical than grammatical.
Except than probably in marketing for tourism sake recently they add the article The to conjure images of an exotic land.
mAiNsTrEaMhunter June 1st, 2012, 04:14 AM ^^ Yes of course, the etymology of countries is more historical than grammatical but whether to use the article 'the' in a given name is not anymore historical but for me is more on dealing with grammar.

Cebu City’s dancing tax collectors today went international. They staged a special performance in the City Treasurer’s office at the Cebu City Hall today when a team from Ortus Japan, a producer of TV documentaries, visited them. They will be featured in NHK, Japan’s national public broadcasting organization. The tax collectors danced to a medley of Broadway songs, first as a staging exclusively for Ortus Japan. They later took to the stage again and performed for the local media as well. The dancing tax collectors were organized in 2010 in an effort to put a smile on taxpayers’ faces when they pay their duties. A difficult task, the city treasurer admitted then.

Hahaha.. bitaw sad bai Zub. Although medyo gyud kiwaw ang mga dancing collectors (apprpriate or not?) pero I think wala man nitukma na ang imong punto about sa kalisod og baha. Dili man na ilahang trabaho. I would admit it really comes as gimmicky to me but I give them my benefit of the doubt because I don't know if it has an overall good impact on the taxpayers which will improve collection rates (ni improve ba?) or with the collectors themselves (nakatangtang ba sa stiffness and boredom sa opisina, did it boost their teamwork in the office and positivity which may lead to increased productivity of the staff?).
As for the other concerns you mentioned which are really important matters (baha og uban pa), it is not in the tax collectors' immediate responsibility. I think other officials are directly answerable to that (DENR, DPWH, Mayor's office etc). In their capacity as tax collectors and office workers, we should best evaluate them within that criterion.

I think that the article "The" is also already part of the etymology which also harkens back to history. As explained by wolfranz, it most probably derives from the Las Islas Filipinas name which has "The" and has been retained even with the English translation and the subsequent contraction.

aahaha bitaw bai baka akong post was not directly to tax collectors but partly..hehehe! its more on the culture actually, sa atong makita sa nasod in general.. miski sa kaguliyang sa atong nasod dad-on lang natog sayaw or joke or pagkashowbiz sa ato politics... ang nahitabong scenario nga mosikat lang ta aning sayaw sayaw, kanta kanta, or boxing og uban pang taphaw nga pride nga mapahimoslan lang sa usa ka taw sa kana ra nga panahon... but still we never get the respect which is the result of greater works that could improve the lives of the Filipinos and lift the status of our country... ang panggawas nga image ang atong concern and we are so preoccupied with shallow/passive things than dealing with long term solutions, or we dont deal with the real issues at all... we tend to escape with the daily miseries and poverty nga ato makita, and just thought of it as oki ra ta oi, but in reality deep inside the more we feel helpless, it grows within us and cant get away with it the more.... :D

SM Prime hikes SRP project cost to P8.5B
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman)
Updated June 02, 2012 12:00 AMComments (0)
CEBU, Philippines - SM Prime Holdings has announced an adjustment to its destination mall project at the South Road Properties (SRP), into making it as big as the Mall of Asia, bringing the project cost to P8.5 billion, from P6 billion.
In an interview with SM Prime Holdings president Hans Sy, he said that while the company is building not only a shopping mall facility, but a “destination mall”, that every Cebuano should be proud of, the company’s management decided to make it Cebu’s newest landmark, making it the fourth biggest mall in the world.
The decision he said is prompted by the vibrant retail and tourism industries in Cebu, and that the schedule for completion of the SRP SM that will be the flagship project of the “SM Seaside Complex” is on track, that will be officially opened by 2014.
“We have to build it right. It will be an attraction,” said Sy adding that the mall will be built on a four-story building, with a total space area of 409,000 square-meters similar to the size of the Mall of Asia in Manila.
Sy, together with other SM Group officials, was in Cebu Thursday, to formally open its second shopping mall in Cebu, the SM Consolacion.
The “SM Seaside City Cebu” mall will be one of the first developments in the master-plan of SM Properties, which stretches from the northern part of the SRP to the sea.
Designed by Arquitectonica, an international architecture, interior design and planning firm from Miami Florida, the grand, first-of-its-kind urban development at the SRP will dramatically change the landscape of the City with its nautilus-inspired design of expanding, concentric arcs from a central multi-purpose space.
The 3rd SM shopping mall in Cebu, next to the newly opened SM Consolacion, the SM Seaside City Cebu will be a 4-level, circular-shaped, world-class retail mall with multiple anchors, including a two-story SM Department Store and SM Hypermart, a five-theater Cineplex and IMAX Theatre, an 18-lane SM Bowling and Amusement Center, and a food court flanking an ice skating rink.
In addition, the mall will have over 800 food and retail shops, including international brands.
Retail shops will occupy the outer arc of the mall on the ground floor. This area will include a furniture zone as well as a fashion boulevard to showcase the talent of Cebu’s many local designers.
The introduction of the SM Seaside City Cebu promises to revolutionize the malling experience not only in Cebu but in the whole country’s south.
An 150 meters Iconic Viewing Tower will be an attraction in itself, offering sensational panoramic views of the entire city of Cebu while serving as a new landmark for the City.
The company is allocating a capital expenditure (capex) of P60 billion in the next three years in the Philippines for its shopping centers construction projects. Aside from its aggressive expansion move in Cebu, the company is also spending to open up new shopping malls in other provinces.
Sy announced that following the opening of SM Consolacion, the company is set to open three more mall facilities, located in San Fernando, Pampanga; General Santos City, and its second mall in Davao City.
Moreover, he said the company is also working on expanding some of its existing malls in the Philippines, particularly SM North Edsa, among others.
Sy expressed strong confidence of the country’s retail sector, saying the country’s economy offers promising future, despite the external issues.
Meanwhile, Sy believes that while he is known as “catalyst”, he agreed to the fact, that once SM projects will finally rise at the SRP, the value of the entire property is seen to significantly increase.

BCFeet June 2nd, 2012, 01:43 AM Badjaos venture into backyard gardening (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/205201/badjaos-venture-into-backyard-gardening)
Cebu Daily News

TO mitigate malnutrition among the Badjaos in sitio Puntod, barangay Alaska-Mambaling, Cebu City, the Badjao Integrated Area Development Project (BIAD-P) implemented the backyard gardening since August last year.
The Badjaos were taught land preparation, planting and soil cultivation. They planted on their backyard nurseries crops that can withstand heat and drought such as malabar nightshade (alugbati), okra, eggplant, ampalaya and cassava.
In June, crops that are good water absorbers will be planted in time for the rainy season.
“Dako gayud kaayog natabang ang backyard gardening sa amo kay naa naman mi kakuhaan sa among sud-an. Dili na mi maka-tyangge (Backyard gardening helped us a lot because we now have a source of food. We need not go to the market anymore),” said Rufina Badajos, a Badjao and one of the team leaders of team San Francisco.
The eight clusters of the Badjao community were grouped into two teams, namely, San Francisco and Gumamela.
Bernie Jacalan, a 10-year-old Badjao, said, “Pasalamat ko kay naa mi tanom nga mga gulay kay lami na, makawala pa gyud sa mga sakit sa lawas (I’m thankful that we have vegetables because aside from being delicious, these are also healthy for the body).”
The backyard gardens are constantly monitored and the persons in charge are evaluated.
BIAD-P was established by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) and Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, together with the Cebu city government and the University of San Carlos-College of Architecture and Fine Arts on January 2011.
For more information about BIAD-P, contact Anton Fuentes at 418-7234 local 515 or visit www.rafi.org.ph or www.facebook.com/rafi.org.ph.

City Hall experiences shortfall in P50M flood control budget (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/205307/city-hall-experiences-shortfall-in-p50m-flood-control-budget)
By Doris C. Bongcac
Cebu Daily News

THE Cebu City government has allocated at least P50 million for the dredging of river deltas.
But this is not yet enough to prevent flooding , said Alvin Santillana, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.
Santillana said that dredging would only mitigate or ease flooding, not solve it. Drainage improvement projects must be made and waterways cleared of obstruction.
“The tendency is for the water to backflow because it has no outlet” he said.
Mayor Michael Rama said the city needed at least P2 billion to implement programs and projects identified in Cebu City’s comprehensive drainage master plan.
But securing funding to execute it is a problem especially after the City Council approved only P100 million of the P500 million the mayor proposed in his 2012 executive budget.
Rama said he will seek additional funding for drainage improvement in Supplemental Budget 2 which he has yet to submit to the council.
The city government appropriated at least P50 million in 2011 for the desilting of the following waterways: T. Padilla creek, Tejero river delta, Mahiga river, Tagonol and Basak Pardo river, Estero Pari-an and the Inayawan river delta.
Of this, only the dredging of the Tejero creek worth P7.2 million was completed. Other dredging works are still ongoing, said Santillana.
Santillana said the city is set to acquire a walking excavator for maintenance dredging of waterway, for earth moving, and geological hazard emergency response.
The P25 million walking excavator will be delivered to the city after the Bids and Awards Committee complies with documentary requirements of the purchase.
Councilor Michael Rallota, president of the Association of Barangay Councils, said the ongoing dredging did not seem to make a difference in his area.
“When it rained this week, our barangay was still flooded,” he said.
Illegal structures in waterways were identified as a factor that aggravates flooding during the rainy season.
About 6,000 families still live in danger zones in roads, creeks and rivers accoring to surveys by City Hall’s urban poor office.
Eviction is difficult because the city government is not ready with a relocation site.

Metro Manila, like Cebu is also growing despite its already much larger economic base compared to us here. If Manila stagnates for more than a decade then maybe we still have a chance to surpass it.

mAiNsTrEaMhunter June 2nd, 2012, 03:06 PM Siemens pushes for tech, training
Cebu poised to attract medical tourism with its drive to offer high-quality service, officials say
Sun Star Daily
Continued innovation in health care technology and education among health care professionals are among the investments Siemens Inc. (Philippines) will put in place to address the growing health care sector, an official said.
Etienne Szivo, chief executive officer of Siemens Health Care for the Asean-Pacific Region, in a recent interview, said they have set up a large team in the Philippines to make all the advanced health care technologies available in the local market.
"Everything is critical in health care. We need fast clinical information to help improve the health of our patient," Szivo said at the sidelines of the company's Health Care Day 2012 last Tuesday.
Siemens' health care sector re-introduced its complete suite of diagnostic products and solutions to key clients in the Visayas and Mindanao, in partnership with its exclusive distributor, FAS Diagnostic Group Inc.
Siemens' recent conference held at the Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu was part of an Asean-Pacific road show aimed at promoting Siemens as a full-service diagnostics company. It hopes to equip laboratory facilities with innovative technologies to deliver fast and accurate patient test results, while minimizing operational costs.
Siemens introduced its hematology testing equipment, Advia 2120i, and PANDA, which are both designed to achieve optimum patient management, streamlined workflow and greater productivity in laboratories.
Szivo identified the Philippines' improving health care sector as one of the potential growth areas of the company, given the government's investments in improving health care services.
He noted that although, the Philippines has yet to become a "mature market" in terms of technology adoption in the medical field, it has shown its willingness to improve in terms of infrastructure and know-how.
This scenario, according to Juan Miguel Tan, Siemens Health Care senior vice-president and country sector lead, is evident in the serious efforts of the government in promoting the country as a medical tourism site.
"There is movement in terms of promotion. We may not be as developed as other countries in Asia but we are moving. We see movements of hospitals procuring latest technologies to render better health care service," Tan said.
He identified Cebu as one of the cities keen on improving its health care services.
"Cebu is moving toward using advanced technologies. In diagnostics, for instance, we see a trend aimed delivering faster and more accurate test results to patients by adopting the latest medical diagnostic technology available in the market. Hospitals have acknowledged these investments as something significant in improving workflow efficiency," he said.
Ellen Sy, president and chief executive officer of FAS Diagnostic Group Inc., also noted that Cebu is developing fast in terms of rendering high-quality medical service and has maintained its position as an ideal spot for foreign tourists who seek medical attention.
"Hospitals here can now do major procedures. We have a JCI-accredited hospital that has services at par with other hospitals in the world. We have the best beach spots for recuperation and more importantly, we have a high quality of medical professionals," she said.
Szivo added the company will also focus on educating further the medical professionals. KOC

cebu dont need to catch up with how crowded mm is cuz that spells disaster if we do imitate them. igu2x rabaya sab ning development diri sa cebu although kulang pa gani in terms of offering job employment sa atong mga igsuon sugbuanon. remember 4+million na biya tang mga sugbaonon. daghan sa atong mga kaigsuonan nga naa sa lungsod ang walay trabaho. hinaut nga development sa metro cebu mosaka pud unta didto sa atong kalungsuran.
i hope nga kining pag butang ug mga supermarket sa mall ug mga fast food chain maka encourage sa atong agriculture ug manufacturing sector. dili lang kay ang developon natu mao ang service sector. kay kon mao nay mahitabo maglugsong tanan tao ug manimpalad sa metro area where there is not enough service jobs available for our cebuano brothers and sisters ug pun-an pa nga ang uban professionals sa other provinces from visayas and mindanao naa nanimpalalad ug pangita ug trabaho sa cebu.
although kining mga development and progress sa metro cebu is a blessing for the entire province of cebu pero hinaut nga ang man power nato from the different sector ma cultivate pud.
cebu norte June 3rd, 2012, 12:52 PM A Regional Competitiveness Committee (RCC) sets up in eight different provinces and key cities in the country, including Cebu, to gather economic data about provincial communities, and how these fare when compared other Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) cities.
The committee is a public-private sector body created to develop strategy for the long-term competitiveness of the Philippines through policy reforms, project implementation and monitoring performance among others.
The RCC network—which includes Cagayan de Oro, Tacloban City, General Santos City, Davao City, Batangas City, Legaspi City, Iloilo City and Cebu— is expected to be in place by June.
The creation of the RCC paves way for the country to be more competitive as each region, city or province would become aware of their strengths and weaknesses. The information of each region, city or province can guide improvements on their individual competitiveness and the whole country’s competitiveness.
The RCC would benefit Cebu because it would become a venue for the stakeholders to work together and gather the economic data according to indices which include basic economic information like population, wage rate, infrastructure, and quality of life, education, safety and health, cost of doing business, and the human resources available here.

MANILA, Philippines—Retail giant SM Prime Holdings Inc. opened its 43rd shopping mall in the country, SM City Consolacion in Cebu, last Friday, June 1.
It is the second of three malls the group wants to have in the bustling province of Cebu.
The mall, with a gross floor area (GFA) of 106,857 square meters, is located on Cebu North Road, Barangay (village) Lamac, Consolacion, Cebu.
It is SM Prime’s second mall in the province, after SM City Cebu, which opened in November 1993 and is 11 kilometers away.
The group’s third Cebu mall will be built on the reclaimed South Road Properties (SRP) area, expected to be opened in the third quarter of 2014.

P5.5 B for resettlement program
Posted by Online on Jun 4th, 2012 //
Manila, Philippines – The government will spend P5.5 billion to build new houses for informal settlers and those living in high-risk or calamity-stricken areas, a Palace official announced yesterday.
Deputy presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte said the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has released the funds to the National Housing Authority (NHA) for the resettlement program.
Around P4.16 billion will finance the NHA-administered rehousing activities, such as the relocation of families living in high-risk areas in Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna, Bulacan, and Pampanga. The resettlement fund will also cover families affected by calamities and government infrastructure projects.
“If you remember, we made a mapping of informal settlers in danger zones and President Aquino said they should be prioritized because they live in high-risk areas especially since the rainy season has started,” Valte said.
Valte said the resettlement program will involve the distribution of 12,227 house and lot packages, 10,188 housing units, and 16,527 lots to beneficiary families across the country. (Genalyn D. Kabiling)

diehardbisdak June 4th, 2012, 04:55 PM Mövenpick hotel in Cebu closed for upgrades
Business World
June 04, 2012
CEBU CITY -- Mövenpick Resort and Spa Cebu is suspending operations
for five (5) months to undertake extensive renovation and expansion work,
hotel officials said.
Joanna Cuenco, assistant director for communications, said Oikonomos
International Resources Corp., the holding company that owns the property,
is investing P200 million in the improvements. The renovation will run from
July 15 to Dec. 15 and involve extensive work on hotel rooms, the swimming
pool, external areas, and all restaurants and lounges, Mövenpick Cebu
General Manager Knuth Keifer said in a press statement. He added that
it will include the addition of amenities never before seen in the Philippines
such as an “innovative new entertainment and event facility.”
Since the extent of the refurbishment will be on such a big scale, the hotel
decided to suspend operations so as not to inconvenience guests, explained
Mr. Kiefer. “When the renovation work is complete, we believe that the hotel
will be an incredible asset not just to Mövenpick Resorts and Hotels but to
Cebu as well,” he added. Mövenpick Resorts and Hotels, a Swiss hospitality
company, currently has 70 international hotels across Europe, the Middle
East, and Asia and plans to acquire or develop other properties to increase
this number to 100 by 2013, said Ms. Cuenco.

The Waterfront management is pleased to announce the completion of its grand lobby, which was opened to serve guests last May 3.
On what guests can expect from the Waterfront lobby, Gatchalian said, “Separate canopies and entrances have been built for the hotel, casino and convention areas, which will certainly improve traffic patterns. Guests are guaranteed an even better check-in experience with a brand new reception area, which includes a more spacious Concierge counter and a wider Front Desk that will cater exclusively to individual travelers.”
Gatchalian added: “Brand new communication and IT equipment have been acquired to further ensure the smooth reception of guests. Other enhancements include a newly built ticket booth for conventions and concerts, Egyptian marble flooring, improvements to the ceiling’s three coves and the lobby’s balconies and staircases, and state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment.”
To complement the hotel’s main lobby, a group check-in counter will be set up, dedicated solely to corporate and travel groups; a larger Duty Free shopping area will be provided; and an additional Casino Filipino gaming space of 2,350 square meters will be launched in July.

mAiNsTrEaMhunter June 5th, 2012, 02:54 AM ICT-BPO meet to look beyond US
By Katlene O. Cacho, Sun Star News Online
Monday | June 4, 2012
PARTICIPANTS of this year’s ICT-BPO Conference will learn more about opportunities in non-US markets as the organizers tapped ICT/BPO international experts from eight countries to speak during the two-day summit.
ICT-BPO Conference 2012 chairman Jun Sa-a, in a recent press conference, pointed out the need for Cebu’s ICT-BPO industry to study the growth and explore market opportunities of its neighboring countries.
He said the Philippines, particularly Cebu, need not concentrate on the US market as countries like Australia and Singapore can also be potential markets for outsourcing services.
Sa-a said they invited NASSCOM board member and chairman of Accenture India Avinash Vashistha to talk about “Learning from India” on the first-day of the conference.
ICT-BPO experts from Malaysia, Vietnam, China, Japan, Australia, Singapore and Europe
will give a talk on the second day of the conference.
The ICT-BPO Conference 2012 is one of the highlight events of the Cebu Business Month scheduled on June 27-28 at the Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu.
“We are looking at near-markets, particularly those (countries) which have slight time differences with the Philippines for an additional volume and so we can utilize the 24/7 operations,” said Anthony Noel, vice-chair of ICT-BPO Conference 2012.
Contingency
Sa-a said tapping neighboring countries is also a contingency plan in case the pending outsourcing bill in the US will be passed into law.
“Issues and opportunities will be tacked during the conference. We need to look at countries which are closer to us and widen our perspective and scope in having business,” he said.
Undersecretary Louis Casambre of the ICT office is the keynote speaker of the conference.
On Day 2, Michael Warren, director of Global Sourcing Cluster Multimedia Development Corp. of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia will talk about the Malaysian economy, while Benoit Genuini, president of Pasarelle Numeriques will discuss Vietnam’s ITO.
China’s BPO story will be discussed by Dr. Frank Chen of the Beijing Association of Sourcing Services, while Masayoshi Tsuru of the Information-Technology Promotions Agency of Japan will tackle ITO opportunities in Japan.
Martin Conboy, president of Australian BPO Association and Richard Eldridge, director of European chamber will give a talk about the Australian BPO market and the outsourcing opportunities in Europe.
Gerry Clark of Partner, Information Services Group, on the other hand, will discuss the global outsourcing market.
Described as Cebu’s biggest ICT-BPO conference so far, the conference will also introduce the Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) industry in Cebu, which is said to be Cebu’s next emerging industry.
Sa-a said they will feature companies that have long been in Cebu and are doing well such as Lear, NCR, Lexmark and Tsuneishi.
The ICT-BPO conference will also launch two awards: the e-Gov awards and the Asean ICT awards.
Awards
The e-Gov award is a joint program of the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines and the Department of Interior and Local Government. It is meant to recognize local government units that embrace and leverage ICT initiatives to improve efficiency, transparency and delivery of public services.
The Asean ICT award, on the other hand, is a joint project of the National Office of ICT & other Asean counterparts that seek to recognize innovations and technology-based innovation within the region.
Sa-a said applications created during the Startup Weekend Cebu could be possible entries for the ICT Award.
This year’s ICT-BPO Conference expects 400 participants coming from the sectors such as the academe, ICT-BPO, and the local-government units.

mAiNsTrEaMhunter June 5th, 2012, 02:58 AM Singapore firm to open Cebu showroom
By Katlene O. Cacho, Sun Star News Online
Monday | June 4, 2012
A SINGAPORE-based construction company is set to open a showroom in Cebu this month to cater to the construction requirements of the southern Philippines market.
International Plant & Equipment (IPE) Pte.Ltd. sales manager Edward Tay said Cebu’s growing construction activities spurred them to expand their operations here.
Tay said their office in Cebu is a showroom and after-sales service facility that would serve clients in the Visayas - Mindanao area.
IPE is still looking for a viable location where they can set up their office. According to Tay, they estimate to spend about P1.4 million for the office.
IPE is a supplier of a wide range of concrete and construction equipment. Among its products are concrete batching plants, asphalt mixing plants and light construction equipment. The company has network operations in the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Middle East, Thailand, and Vietnam.
“Our expansion in Cebu was buoyed by its strong local economy as manifested by rapid construction activities here,” Tay said in an interview during the Cebu Construction Show, which concluded yesterday.
IPE has 46 batching plants in the Philippines, four of which are located in Cebu, through private contractors. Tay said the establishment of these plants cost $80,000 to$200,000 in investments.
Tay said the adoption of advanced technologies in construction helps increase productivity and efficiency. He said the Philippines needs to invest in proper equipment and training of its workforce.
According to industry reports, public construction will significantly boost the country’s economic growth this year as the government already released the budget to fund various infrastructure projects of different agencies like Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Education and Department of Agriculture.
Private construction on the other hand, will remain robust given the growth in the office space and condominium sector.

By Mia A. Aznar, Sun Star News Online

AFTER nine months of planning, officials of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) officially began Cebu Business Month with an opening salvo held Friday.
Overall chairman Mario Panganiban thanked the 11 committee chairpersons and their members for their work on the preparations for the month-long celebration.
Panganiban told those present to attend the conferences, workshops and seminars scheduled throughout the month, which are all dedicated to four main sectors--tourism, information and communication technology-business process outsourcing, micro, small and medium enterprises and emerging industries.
Newly-inducted CCCI president Prudencio Gesta, for his part, announced Cebu’s hosting of the Confederation of Asia-Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CACCI) conference next year.
In an audio-visual presentation, top leaders of the CCCI explained why this event is important, not only for CCCI but for Cebu. CACCI is an international organization composed of different chambers of commerce from 27 countries.
In previous years, the conferences were held in Yokohama, Japan, Colombo, Sri Lanka, Istanbul, Turkey and Kathmandu, Nepal.
CCCI leaders said the event will make Cebu close to the international body, increase business transactions and strengthen its relations globally.
Aside from Cebu, about three other countries bid to host the conference. The hosting of the CACCI conference coincides with CCCI’s centennial celebration, which top leaders feel is an added bonus.
Gesta said the two-day international conference will allow delegates to experience Cebu, as they will be made to go on the Suroy-Suroy Sugbo tour and experience golfing in Cebu.
With the networking opportunities available, he said doors will be opened to local entrepreneurs, increasing tourism and market growth.
The opening salvo began with song and dance numbers, followed by a ceremonial “take off” using a remote controlled helicopter, signifying Cebu taking off to soar higher, a reference to this year’s theme, “Soar Higher, Cebu.”
Cebu Business Month began with the Beauty, Health and Wellness show at the Ayala Center Cebu.

Bitaw nganong wala may suporta ang gobyerno anang gun industry sa Danao? It could provide a lot of jobs for the people there. I don't understand how the Philippine government works!:ohno:
Kaning mga sundang pang domestic market ok ra man ni siya. Kung magbuhat sila ug mga kris or kampilan kanang mga works of art ba, basin ug mas high value ang ilang mga produkto. Tingali kung naay suporta sa gobyerno. Kana bitaw nga mga samurai swords sa Japan priceless gyod na sila. I think for now the malls serve the same purpose as the parks, trails and reserves in western countries. Unta this will not serve as a disincentive for the LGU's to provide public spaces for recreation. There's a big difference man god because parks are owned by the public and everybody has access to them. They are also good for the environment, property values and quality of life as a whole. IMO a city can't be considered livable and world class without adequate public spaces.

OBO chief told: Stop corruption
By Rene U. Borromeo/MIT (The Freeman)
June 05, 2012
CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Engineer Kenneth Carmelita Enriquez is facing a great challenge from Mayor Michael Rama to stop the graft and corruption at the Office of the Building Official (OBO) now that she has been appointed as acting head of the office.
While the mayor is still looking for the right person to be appointed as OBO head, Rama temporarily chose Enriquez to manage the office because Engineer Josefa Ylanan declined to handle the office that she manned for the past several years.
The FREEMAN tried to get Ylanan’s reaction on the mayor’s statement that graft and corruption might be one of the reasons for the delay in the processing of permits at the OBO but Ylanan refused to comment.
Rama said he instructed Enriquez to completely remove graft and corruption among some of the OBO employees although he did not elaborate details about it.
“Dugay na kana kaayo uy, dili na kana malalis pa, panahon pa kanang Mampor, (It has been there for a long time, it cannot be argued.)” the mayor said in jest.

Well, the good thing about our flyovers is that its just too short if we compare it to MM's. All our flyovers were just built to lessen the traffic in major intersections and doesn't even cover entire stretches of road network. We don't have the likes of the Metro Manila Skyway of SLEX or the whole stretch of EDSA with all those multiple level flyovers not to mention its overhead LRT/MRT that runs alongside with it. At least, Cebu is going for the BRT which runs on the surface and not above grade. Hopefully with that, we can breathe safe from overhead concrete. IMHO, the most important thing is that we just have to regulate flyovers, spare those areas that doesn't need to have one, identify specific areas where there's no other way but to build one and study all possible means if its really necessary or not.
Jimbu June 5th, 2012, 04:57 PM Cebu airport, bus system included in PPP projects for 2012
Tuesday, June 5, 2012
MALACANANG on Tuesday bared the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects, including two for the province of Cebu, that will be rolled out by the Aquino government for the year 2012.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said among the projects to be rolled out is the Mactan Cebu International Airport and the Cebu Bus Rapid Transport.
“We would be rolling out some PPP projects for this year, let me just state some of the PPP projects that we will be rolling out… for DOTC expected for bidding by the last quarter of this year will be the line 1 Cavite extension, there’s a publication yesterday for pre-qualification. The Mactan Cebu International Airport, the Panglao Airport, the Automated Fare Collection System and the Cebu Bus Rapid Transport,” Lacierda said.
The government is reportedly looking at a proposed two-phase expansion of the Mactan-Cebu airport. The said expansion would reportedly cost about P9 billion.

kenken94 June 5th, 2012, 07:39 PM Well, the good thing about our flyovers is that its just too short if we compare it to MM's.
Flyovers are not even meant to be placed in urban centers but look at what happened to Cebu. Mao raman gihapon, traffic raman gihapon with or without the flyover albeit it's much easier without them in intersections. Just widening the roads are enough.
Hopefully, naa nato ang master-plan para sa Sugbo og masunod to aron haruhay napod pagbalik ang atong syudad. :)

A NEW terminal building at Mactan Airport and the Cebu Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system are among the projects the National Government will roll out this year, a Malacañang official said.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda announced that the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) is expected to conduct the bidding in the last quarter this year for the Line 1 Cavite Extension of the Metro Manila Light Rail Transit.
He then said the other projects that will be rolled out in 2012 are “the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the Panglao Airport, the Automated Fare Collection System and the Cebu Bus Rapid Transport system.”
The National Government is reportedly looking at a two-phase expansion of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) that will cost about P9 billion.
Interviewed separately, General Manager Nigel Paul Villarete of the MCIA Authority yesterday confirmed the new terminal is part of the administration’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) package this year.

CEBU CITY -- It’s final. The national thanksgiving mass for the canonization of Beato Pedro Calungsod will be held at the South Road Properties (SRP), high-ranking Church officials announced Tuesday.
The local church raised more than P19 million for the canonization on October 21 in Rome and the national thanksgiving celebration on November 30.
Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, preparations committee chairperson, made the announcement with Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma during a press conference at the Archbishop’s Residence.
“Our meeting zeroed in on the venue for the national thanksgiving mass. It would be in SRP, that’s the final decision,” said Cardinal Vidal.
“SM management will take care of the site development,” he added.
Good neighbor
Cardinal Vidal said the expenses for site development were a major concern as this was projected to reach millions of pesos. This was the reason the Mandaue Reclamation Area was initially announced as the venue.
Marissa Fernan, SM Prime vice president, said the firm is willing to spend “as much as it would take for the preparations (to be finished).”
“The site is beside us (in SRP). (SM Prime President) Hans Sy said, ‘Why don’t we be a good neighbor?’ He visited the site and there are resources at the site,” Fernan told reporters.
The work entails site clearing, compacting, construction of vertical and horizontal roads using pavers, and lighting. She also said the firm is building a church, the Shrine of Mary Mother of God, on the adjacent SM-owned property.
“The construction of the church is ongoing and will be finished by October. The church can be used as a holding area for the VIPs, the bishops,” she said.
Preparations
In a separate interview, Cardinal Vidal said he met with Hans Sy and his mother Felicidad Tan Sy, who is said to be the reason masses are held in SM malls. The 81-year-old prelate said the meeting took place in Manila last month, before he went to his hometown in Marinduque for his annual vacation.
The committee on preparations is still raising funds for other expenses that add up to millions, said finance officer Msgr. Roberto Alesna. He said the committee has raised at least P19,892,000 as of May 31. This month, about P3 million was received by the committee.
The committee on venue, headed by Fr. Raul Gallego, submitted a report that stated they need about P12 million for the construction of the template that would be used for the mass.
The worship and liturgy committee, headed by Archdiocesan Commission on Worship chairman Msgr. Cristobal Garcia, also submitted a report with an estimated cost of more than P4 million for albs and vestments, among others.
Fund-raising activities include the sale of the limited edition Beato Pedro Calungsod sculpture made by renowned designer Kenneth Cobonpue, at P25,000 each. Buyers also get a chance to win expensive vehicles like a BMW and a Kia Sorrento.
P10M target
Alesna said all 364 priests and 147 parishes are expected to raise P10 million, and envelopes will be distributed to Catholic schools so that administrators, teachers, and parents have a chance to make contributions.
In Rome, the preparations are ongoing, although there are no figures on the expenses. Cardinal Vidal said the expenses during the beatification of Beato Pedro 12 years ago reached about P16 million.
Archbishop Palma said archdioceses and dioceses of the country would be contributing to help cover the expenses of the celebration. He also emphasized that raising funds is not the focus of the frenzy in the preparations although “to us money is the solution to the problem.”
“This is a once in a lifetime event, an occasion for us to savor. We will do everything to make it solemn, memorable,” said Archbishop Palma. (Sun.Star Cebu)

Aussie-based entrepreneur invests P2M for Cebu biz

CEBU, Philippines - After building a successful restaurant and coffee shop business in Australia, a Cebuana entrepreneur is coming back home to take advantage of Cebu’s fertile environment for food and beverage business.Nadith Veloso is investing at least P2 million to impart the success she achieved in Australia to Cebu, by opening the Brewmance Café Bar at the Cebu IT Park.
Located at the Skyrise 1 building, Veloso’s first venture in Cebu offers coffee, burgers, tea, and continental meals at competitive prices that would be attractive to the BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) working community.
Veloso maintains similar business in Brisbane and Melbourne Australia. Although she has been successful there, she said she has to come home to invest here as well as to help her siblings start their own business.
“What prompted me to expand my business in my hometown Cebu is to provide my family with sustained income. I have been staying in Australia for 28 years and what I think is a good payback to my country and to my family is to start a business, that is also out of my passion,” Veloso said in an interview.
Although she is currently hands on in managing her first venture in Cebu, she said she will have to train his siblings to manage and expand the cafe and restaurant business here, as she still has to attend to her business in Australia.
Despite the presence of coffee shops and specialty restaurants in Cebu, Veloso is confident that her business here would succeed due to quality and affordability, as she is planning to open up more outlets here soon.
“What we offer here is something exciting—new and fresh for the Cebuano market,” she said adding that aside from putting up a relaxed ambiance that most coffee shops have, Brewmance will also attract the “night” crowd, by converting it to a “chill” bar outlet during nighttime.
cyberCEBU June 6th, 2012, 08:37 AM Mactan airport to have new P9B terminal
InterAksyon.com
The online news portal of TV5
CEBU CITY -- An official of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) has confirmed that the national government is set to roll out this year a new P9-billion terminal for the country's busiest airport outside Manila.
MCIAA general manager Nigel Paul Villarete said the new terminal for the Mactan Cebu International Airport is part of the administration’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) package this year.
”This is actually being studied through a transaction adviser, Deloitte India,” Villarete said.
Villarete said he expects a briefing by Friday from the firm, which, according to its website, provides services in audit, consulting, financial advisory and risk management.
”Most probably, we will invite Deloitte India to attend the meeting of the MCIAA Board on June 15,” Villarete said.
Earlier, Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda announced in Manila that among the projects to be rolled out this year in Cebu are the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and the Cebu Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system.
The Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) has been conducting a feasibility study of the BRT system in Cebu City, which, according to the proposal, will run from Bulacao in the south to Talamban in the north.
Its model is the public urban mass transportation implemented in Bogota in Colombia, Curitiba in Brazil, Jakarta in Indonesia and in 14 other cities in Asia.
It works like a train system but uses buses instead of train coaches and bus lanes instead of train tracks.
The buses are stairless and passengers pay at specially designed bus stops.
Consultants from the Asian Development Bank are also conducting a study on the feasibility of the BRT system at the 300-hectare South Road Properties (SRP) that will connect to the main BRT.
The BRT system in SRP, an economic zone, is expected to be implemented in 2014.

“What we offer here is something exciting—new and fresh for the Cebuano market,” she said adding that aside from putting up a relaxed ambiance that most coffee shops have, Brewmance will also attract the “night” crowd, by converting it to a “chill” bar outlet during nighttime.

slytherine June 6th, 2012, 11:42 AM Cebu Pacific, Rolls-Royce sign $280-M service contract
Budget airline Cebu Pacific signed on Wednesday a $280-million long-term service support system contract with Rolls-Royce for TotalCare involving up to eight Airbus A330 aircraft which run on Trent 700 engines.
President Aquino witnessed the signing as part of his three-day official visit to the United Kingdom, Cebu Pacific said in a statement.
"CEB's fleet expansion will enable us to launch long-haul operations and serve markets outside Asia Pacific, including those in Europe, the Middle East, Oceania and the United States," said Cebu Pacific president and CEO Lance Y. Gokongwei during the signing.
“The level of support offered by Rolls-Royce through the TotalCare package will further enhance our operations,” he added.
In a text message to GMA News Online, Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific vice president for marketing and distribution, said the contract term is 12 years.
“It offers us superior operating economics which we can deliver to our guests through our low fares,” she said.
Iyog also said that Rolls-Royce will not be making a counterpart investment in Cebu Pacific.
Cebu Pacific plans to use the leased A330s to begin long-haul operations in the second half of 2013. These aircraft will represent the first Trent engines in the carrier’s fleet.
The Trent 700, the only engine specifically designed for the A330, is the market leader for the aircraft, with more than 1,400 in service or on order. Over 90 percent of Trent engine operators have selected TotalCare support.
Cebu Pacific has been intending to select TotalCare since last February.
According to Bruce Blythe, Rolls-Royce senior vice president for Civil Aerospace, “our ability to evaluate Trent engine data from the worldwide fleet and work with each customer to plan maintenance activities will significantly help Cebu Pacific to meet the airline’s operational and financial goals.”
“We look forward to supporting the airline in the next phase of the carrier’s growth,” Blythe added.
At present, Cebu Pacific operates a fleet of 38 aircraft, including 10 Airbus A319, 20 Airbus A320 and 8 ATR-72 500 aircraft. The fleet has an average age of 3.6 years. In the next nine years, the carrier plans to take delivery of more aircraft orders, particularly 22 additional Airbus A320, and 30 Airbus A321neo. —VS, GMA News
