I actually love that Mactan still feels rural..IMO that's one of the charms of Mactan. That was how I always felt when crossing the bridge when I come home from Cebu City/Mandaue. However, tarongon lang unta ang basic services, ang road networks, public places. And more trees that line the streets. Sad to say, the government has been way behind the private initiative.

Anyway, I think I feel the same way when I leave from Mandaue and enter Lacion or Lilo-an. I hope that we really contain urban development within the urban core..if possible, within Cebu City and Mandaue City. Build more highrises, increase density, while minimizing the urbanization of the suburbs.

One thing that I find worrisome in Mactan is the rapid increase in population. I guess at much higher rates than Cebu City and Mandaue City. It is not the population increase itself, but the problems that come with it, considering how it is currently being managed. The lack of proper urban planning, the lack of general sympathy towards its inhabitants by its LGU, the lack of a visionary leadership.

It worries me how it's going to manage to absorb this influx of people.

Cebu City Dev’t Council Use funds for drainage

Flyover proponents in Cebu City suffered another blow when the local development council yesterday rejected a proposal to fund two more flyover projects in the north district.

In their meeting, the City Development Council headed Mayor Michael Rama said funds should be rechanneled to drainage projects and traffic master plans instead.

“Lack of CDC endorsement means that the two flyover projects cannot be implemented,” the mayor said during the meeting.

its a nice place to have in cebu especially for educational purposes to our young kids. i guess they needed a much bigger place so as not to confine these animals in cramp cages and simulate more of their natural habitat. a pretty good idea. :cheers:

yup, I know naanad ka sa city nga urban gyud but stating rural and be sorry for it, for what reason? You don't need to be sorry coz being rural ambiance is not a crime:D

Ako lang bai, ganahan kaayo ko sa mga hulagway. Apan dili sad kaayo ko fan ani na style. I don't know why but it makes me sad because it sort of denigrates our place into a second rate of the other places that are supposed to be portrayed by those in the photos.

I think it's a step back for us because Cebu is already a BRAND on its own. Why make it secondary to other places?

I know probably the intention is to show that what they've got in other places, we also have in our own, but I don't know why something doesn't feel right in my gut with this. I just think we should emphasize more on what is uniquely Cebu. What makes Cebu a wonderful place to live in and to visit. What will I miss if I don't visit Cebu?

This is just my take on this. Does anyone share this opinion or think it's just nonsense?

And those packages or attractions that Cebu have along with those international destinations, those are just addition to Cebu's own unique brand. So murag mahog nuon og we're at par with them although not that factual but at least as promotion purposes...:yes:

^^ gipakita ra na agawon nga naa pud tay parehong mga sites and sounds na makita sa ubang lugar. even though Cebu is already a brand, we should not be too complacent about it kay basin unya mauwahi na tas panon. IMO, dili pa gyud ta ingon ana ka 'established' as a destination compared to the places being cited. Let's continue to promote Cebu to the rest of the world coz dili pa gyud tanan ang familiar sa Cebu, at least gipanganlan ang mga sikat na mga lugar to let everybody know where Cebu is and what the island can offer to them. Ganahan ko na time will come it wouldn't be just cebuanos/filipinos who will recommend cebu to other nationalities but even foreigners will be the one to recommend Cebu for the rest of the world to see. :cheers:

Aw hinuon sad bai Dik. Tingali mao na ang rason. Because we are still not there yet. I just happen to prefer to highlight the things that are uniquely ours. Like the dancing inmates, Cobonpue's factory, or Cebu Dried mangos, etc.. those things that have made the Cebu mark positively in the world's eyes.

I also see that man sad bai Slerz. Siguro tungod kay ingani man pod tag pangutok kasagaran mga Pinoy. I still think mas patok ni siya for local consumption/ domestic tourists because most of us would think, why not visit these places if we can't go to China, Prague or Las Vegas? But IMO, dili gyud siya ingana ka maayo nga come on for foreign tourist. If I'm from China, or from the US I would not probably be enticed to visit. As a traveler, I think the biggest motive is always to see what's on the other side of the mountain, the other side of the sea so to speak. Kana imo last sentence bai, mao na exactly ang ako dili kaayo ganahan ani na part. Because it is not that factual and it's just for promotion purposes. Because we can never be better than the original, we always come under and never really at par. Tingali sad kay I always consider a place as similar to people. It is always the best to be the best of ourselves than be like someone else, whatever our faults and strengths may be. But even with people, I think we pass that stage where we try to imitate someone who we look up to.
Maybe, Cebu is still in that stage. Afterall, we still often say, and delight in the claims of the "Hongkong" of Philippines and things like that, or even "Makati of the South". No offense to those places, which I think are wonderful in their own ways, but I also never liked those titles.

I hope we will outgrow this phase and become just Cebu. We will have come of age by then.

right.. and I never seen a culture as unique as Japan... not like in Malaysia that is becoming more China. I got your point.
It would be a hit for a traveler if he discovers something unique than just another similar attraction :yes:

DUBLIN, Ireland, JUNE 17, 2012 (Zenit.org).- Here is the statement given today at the Closing Mass of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress by Pope Benedict XVI.
My dear brothers and sisters, I pray that the Congress will be for each of you a spiritually
fruitful experience of communion with Christ and his Church. At the same time, I would like
to invite you to join me in praying for God’s blessing upon the next International Eucharistic
Congress, which will take place in 2016 in the city of Cebu! To the people of the Philippines
I send warm greetings and an assurance of my closeness in prayer during the period of
preparation for this great ecclesial gathering. I am confident that it will bring lasting spiritual
renewal not only to them but to all the participants from across the globe. In the meantime,
I commend everyone taking part in the present Congress to the loving protection of Mary, Mother of God,
and to Saint Patrick, the great patron of Ireland; and, as a token of joy and peace in the Lord, I willingly impart my Apostolic Blessing.

LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Paz Radaza urged her constituents to support the City’s efforts to attract more tourists.

During the city’s 51st charter anniversary celebration yesterday, Radaza said the City needs to work harder with the emergence of Camarines Sur as a top tourist destination.

“A recent news headline showed Camsur leading us in tourism arrival. We should embrace the report as a wake-up call,” she said in her speech at the Hoops Dome in Barangay Gun-ob.

Also yesterday, Mayor Radaza gave certificates of recognition to the City’s Task Force Kalikasan, Clean and Green program head Mario Imbong, three members of the Advance Karatedo Club and former Sangguniang Kabataan Federation president Reymar Dico, who passed the recent accountants’ licensure examinations.

In an interview with reporters, Radaza said the City Government is willing to cooperate with the province in promoting Cebu more aggressively.

Salamat sa pag-ambit sa diskusyon bai. We will always become what we see ourselves to be. Tinuod man nga we are not a first world country (although that system of classifying coutries is quite outdated), but we can never rise up if we are stuck with that so called "third world" mentality. Kana bang, "third world ra man gud ta.." nga way of thinking. With that comes a quick and painless acceptance of things as beyond our control. That it's okay for our roads and public services to be not as we want them or hope them to be. Kay third world ra man ta. We rationalize to make things so much more acceptable. But then that makes us often demand less of ourselves, of our public officials. That deeply ingrained inferiority complex. I don't know an easy way to combat that, but it is one of the things that keeps us from moving up.

At least, for us Cebuanos, at the national level or kung sa Pilipinas lang ang hisgutan, we have a sense of pride. Dili ta palupig sa uban. Now where is this stance, when we face the international stage? I hope it never wavers.

There is something to be learned from Kenneth Cobonpue. People asked him why such expensive furniture when they are made in a third world country? What he answered inspired me and lighted a bulb up in my head and made me swell with pride. He said that it is expensive because it is of excellent quality and the talent and skill required to make them is worth the price.

I may never be able to buy his furniture, not until he makes a line for the poorer people like me, but I would always be inspired everytime I see one.

That is one excellent Cebuano. That is a kind of Cebuano that we ought to become - secure of himself, proud of his roots and his place, even in the face of the whole world.

It is NOT about the order of world we come from (1st, 2nd or third or whatever).

We should realize that we are a rare commodity (apil na lang tas kahig a.k.a. basking in reflected glory), and we should make our own mark. That statement came not from a Cebuano, but from a New Zealander.

Waste-to-energy plant to rise in Cebu ecozone

CEBU CITY -- A Canadian company wants to help rid Cebu of its
industrial trash by using these as fuel for a proposed $25-million
waste-to-energy plant in the Mactan Economic Zone 1 in Lapu-Lapu City.

The facility will use the so-called Thermal Oxidation Process System (Tops)
and is seen to handle a daily load of 75 tons of garbage, which translate to
three megawatts (MW) of power once it is fully operational, said Jesus A.
Jayme, Jr., Aquilini Mactan Renewable Energy, Inc. president. “We can
accommodate waste from all economic zones in Cebu. We will also be
accepting municipal waste, ” he added.

Cebu City has hired a contractor to clean creeks, rivers and other waterways in the city
to help ease the flooding that always comes with the rains these days. In the photo,
the creek that traverses Jakosalem St. at the back of Gaisano Main in the downtown
area is being cleared of debris. The creek has been overflowing lately following heavy

The clean-up is also in preparation for Tropical Storm Butchoy which was last seen east
of Eastern Samar. Rains are expected in Cebu today.

CEBU, Philippines - To address the market gap in the housing industry, Contempo Holdings Inc. will launch a flagship project on affordable vertical development intended for the middle-income segment.

Contempo President and Chief Executive Officer Beverly Dayanan said that the company’s latest project will cater to the market who wants to reside in the city but providing more than the usual concept of residential developments.

She added that Contempo will be spending almost a billion pesos for the complex whose target completion is projected within three to five years.

She further revealed that 50 percent of the development will be devoted to amenities which will include a swimming pool, clubhouse, barbecue station, playground, gym, badminton court and a prayer room.

Contempo’s flagship project, she noted, is situated in a one-hectare property along H. Cortes Street in Mandaue City with three residential condominium towers and approximately 800 condo units with prices ranging from P1.5 to P1.8 million.

a friend told me this a few months ago... nagtambay daw siya sa usa ka lugar and naa daw to group(mga tagalog) nga iya nakasturya. reason they were here in Cebu kay market study daw para 7-Eleven

Salamat sa pag-ambit sa diskusyon bai. We will always become what we see ourselves to be. Tinuod man nga we are not a first world country (although that system of classifying coutries is quite outdated), but we can never rise up if we are stuck with that so called "third world" mentality. Kana bang, "third world ra man gud ta.." nga way of thinking. With that comes a quick and painless acceptance of things as beyond our control. That it's okay for our roads and public services to be not as we want them or hope them to be. Kay third world ra man ta. We rationalize to make things so much more acceptable. But then that makes us often demand less of ourselves, of our public officials. That deeply ingrained inferiority complex. I don't know an easy way to combat that, but it is one of the things that keeps us from moving up.

At least, for us Cebuanos, at the national level or kung sa Pilipinas lang ang hisgutan, we have a sense of pride. Dili ta palupig sa uban. Now where is this stance, when we face the international stage? I hope it never wavers.

There is something to be learned from Kenneth Cobonpue. People asked him why such expensive furniture when they are made in a third world country? What he answered inspired me and lighted a bulb up in my head and made me swell with pride. He said that it is expensive because it is of excellent quality and the talent and skill required to make them is worth the price.

I may never be able to buy his furniture, not until he makes a line for the poorer people like me, but I would always be inspired everytime I see one.

That is one excellent Cebuano. That is a kind of Cebuano that we ought to become - secure of himself, proud of his roots and his place, even in the face of the whole world.

It is NOT about the order of world we come from (1st, 2nd or third or whatever).

That last line was music to my ears.:)
We should realize that we are a rare commodity (apil na lang tas kahig a.k.a. basking in reflected glory), and we should make our own mark. That statement came not from a Cebuano, but from a New Zealander.

Now, IMO this one is a better way to do it.

So true Zubby. The society is a reflection of the people. That's why I don't blame the politicians for everything because they wouldn't be there without the people supporting them and people being civic minded themselves. An example is you cannot blame the politicians for the dirty streets. You can probably blame them for not installing trash bins but people are the ones throwing trash everywhere and peeing on walls instead of doing these things at their homes. I think awareness and education can make things better.

Also, you have to be very careful about constructive criticisms because most people get defensive and attack the messenger deflecting from the issue itself.

Bitaw if you are going by the book, there are a number of violations that are clearly visible, but this is the Philippines. They might have gotten a variance.

na-amaze sila dri sa cebu kay almost every corner naay bakery. i think mao ni ila mga indirect competitors dri. they are more concerned

with the many little snack shops like bakeries than the existing convenience stores in cebu.

Integrated Transport Planning urban planner Colin Brader says Osmeña Blvd. is the most feasible area for the bus rapid transit (BRT) system.

Brader told members of the Movement for Livable Cebu that the BRT will revitalize the downtown area, with Citilink as the ferry point. People will get down at Citilink and ride jeepneys to the downtown area.

The BRT is planned to start in Bulacao through N. Bacalso then turn to Osmeña Blvd., pass through Escario St. and go straight to Talamban.

Ang ilaha seguro gusto palutson kay ang gikan sa Beverly Hills, Ecotech area.. Kay based on my experience grabe jud ka traffic diha lugara whenever magdasok na ang vehicles south, north and beverly hills bound...

IMO, dili sad jud pede dili solusyanan.... kay bottleneck na jud na diha lugar considering those areas are fast becoming highly commercialized district.

If dili overpass sa Gorordo since ma impede ang view sa Mormon Church which is alreadybecoming an iconic structure in the city..., i would go for a flyover from the Ecotech to Gorordo and the expansion of the road to six lane thus, demolishing the structures/ squatters who are occcupying the riverbanks... The flyover from Ecotech area to Gorordo would have little impact in the view of the Mormon Church... Or, an underpass which is very costly and would take time to build.. :D

Who's going to walk 100 yards+ to ride a scheduled BRT..
Then go, shop and carry those bags another 100 yards back home.
It will be a 2+ ride each way for ost people.
Cebu is hot and humid all year and a moonsoon season.
-Wait for a crowded bus to come.
-Forget about having a seat
Bus are designed for standing and runs on rush hours only.

Of course a Taxi ride actually will be more convenient and perhaps cheaper
(People do not shop alone - maybe in groups of 4 or 5)
No hassle walking many yards to a bus stop.
I hope my cheaper than taxi jeepney ride will not be aboilished
by politicians who will profit from this.

Wishing to match our more of European cities branding and styles:
Look at the small space needed. People and cars blend well with the fixed rail safety.
(Cebu is not copying developing South America)

:dunno: in my experience, taxis had never been cheaper than busses. How did that happen?

in some of the upscale residential and business districts in Foreign City X for instance, taxis are actually harder to get during rush hours because everyone is scrambling to get one. ;) Despite phoning in taxi companies for bookings, taxis are still not readily available during those peak times. Which is why people have the option to go for the busses.

When BRT buses replace jeepneys in key Cebu city routes, what happens to the drivers?

Most jeepney drivers in Cebu City aren’t even aware of plans to shift to using buses by 2015.

Those who heard about the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) proposal said they were never consulted.

“Way ayo na. Kami ang maapektahan (That’s no good. We will be the ones affected.),” said Alberto Flores, who drives a PUJ route 14D between Ayala and Colon.

A feasibility study of the BRT is almost done, and will eventually be proposed for a World Bank loan to build an alternative mass transit system from barangay Bulacao to Talamban starting 2013.

My take on this topic:

The Problem : Worsening Traffic

Solution : Mass Transport System (BRT/LRT/MRT)

For now BRT was selected as the best solution at least for the next five years or so, based on studies. And, I don’t want to dig deeper into the reason why BRT was selected over the other since it’s been discussed here before and I’m okay with it IMHO.

What I want to say is that, it is not bad to be skeptical but I think it should be supported on factual grounds. I said that because based on your arguments, as I understood, it is somehow applicable also to your preferred Mass Transport System solution which is LRT/MRT. I for one also prefer the latter same as you do but as they said the cost is too much for the cause at least for the current situation.

Do you think you won’t walk 100+ yards if LRT is selected?
MRT/LRT in manila is crowded as hell plus it is inconvenient since you will have to walk 2 stories up and down for a ride contrary to the BRT station as seen on the initial render. Hope if LRT/MRT comes the station will be like the BRT station.

As for the jeepney ride, yes it is very much convenient for us riders but for the worsening traffic I don’t think we’d still be stuck in this ineffective transport system.

True. If he wants to use the taxi he can surely do it even if the BRTs there. If he wants to continue using jeepneys that drop him off his doorstep he can live in the rural areas. And this isn't even to say that he can't do that in the city because the BRT only runs in the major thoroughfares.

Lastly, no one died walking 100 yards. Last time I checked, it can even add to your life. Our bodies were meant to move than sit the whole time.

Re: consultation. I thought there were consultations held since 2 years ago? I hope they'd clarify this because I think consultations especially with the affected drivers are imperative in the implementation of BRT. I remember that it was done. Where could this drive have been hiding? I hope he isn't like those parents who never attend the PTA meetings and complain the most. Basin wala nitunga. In any case, it's also probably not enough. They should make sure that the message cuts across. But consultation with them doesn't mean they get to decide whether BRT would be implemented or not. It is only to find ways to accommodate and mitigate the negative impacts on their livelihood. This is the part where the city government/national government should use its muscle.

Regarding ana'ng lakaw, kita bitaw sa Pinas, hilig kaayo ta anang door to door nga klase sa pag-commute. Mao nang ning-exist nang trisikad, tungod ana.

Sa uban lugar, with better urban transport system, ang mga tawo molakaw gud og maski usa ka kilometro para moadto sa station...Tungod ani, nakita sa gobyerno ang need sa pagpanindot sa sidewalk, with matching trees.

Sa una bitaw, nag eskwela pa ko, lakawon ra na namo sa ako mga amigo ang gikan sa USC-TC padulong sa Country Mall, gawas lang kung mag-uwan o magdali.

Cebu is hot and humid all year and a moonsoon season.
-Wait for a crowded bus to come.
-Forget about having a seat
Bus are designed for standing and runs on rush hours only.

Of course a Taxi ride actually will be more convenient and perhaps cheaper
(People do not shop alone - maybe in groups of 4 or 5)
No hassle walking many yards to a bus stop.
I hope my cheaper than taxi jeepney ride will not be aboilished
by politicians who will profit from this.

Wishing to match our more of European cities branding and styles:
Look at the small space needed. People and cars blend well with the fixed rail safety.
(Cebu is not copying developing South America)

People would willingly walk for 5 minutes. What's the distance between stations? I think the BRT would complement the jeepneys and not phase them out. I personally don't want the jeepneys gone. They are part of our culture.

Do you think you won’t walk 100+ yards if LRT is selected?
MRT/LRT in manila is crowded as hell plus it is inconvenient since you will have to walk 2 stories up and down for a ride contrary to the BRT station as seen on the initial render. Hope if LRT/MRT comes the station will be like the BRT station.

i so agree with this. been there, done that. which is why i'm hoping we won't need to go up and down a skywalk just to go to one station.

i'm not adverse to walking 5-10mins to go to a station as long as sidewalks are wide and free from obstacles. and hopefully, they will be tree lined to provide shades for the pedestrians.

and jeepneys have to go, IMO. they contribute much to the pollution of the city. they could be used alternatively for tourists to use as hop in and hop off vehicles to go to tourist spots in the metro. like in gabi-i sa kabilin.
