Good evening guys,

I checked the emporis web site and i found out that there are two highrise project on hold in Cebu one of them is the Park City Central Hotel a twin 34 storey tower. The project architect is the PEMENTEL RODRIGUEZ SIMBULAN AND PARTNERS and the INTERIOR EXTERIOR DESIGN CONSULTANT INC. The other highrise project is the Gold Coast Towers by the Primetown and one Cebuano partner. It is a 28 storey high ,and located in Mactan. Im hoping that these two highrise will materialize. The developer of Gold Coast Towers did not finish thier project during the Asian financial crises and now they are looking for a developer/partner to resume the project.

I guess GoldCoast is no longer in the blueprint. I still remember that project; my dad was once a realtor.

Mactan Gold Cost Towers is already cancelled.

Construction of Gold Coast Tower, a 24-storey residential
condominium, was stopped last year after PPGI experienced
financial problems. Problems on the foundation of the
building initially delayed the construction. The economic
crisis worsened these problems and eventually forced the
company to stop work activities.

Ann Campo, officer-in-charge of PPGI's Cebu office, said
buyers of Gold Coast units can transfer advance payments to
other projects such as the Cebu Hilton Resort Tower and
Kiener Hills Subdivision in Cebu or the Diamond Head,
Meditel and Conservatorium in Metro Manila. Ms. Campo said
the company has made a special arrangement with developers
of these projects to accommodate buyers of Gold Coast.

She also said PPGI is still negotiating with various
entities, including the Cuervo Group, for the possible
continuation of work on the project. If PPGI successfully
negotiates for the continuation of the project, Ms. Campo
said they will still invite the former buyers and give them
priority over the condominium units.

The Gold Coast Tower, a joint project of PPGI and Aznar
Group of Cebu, was among the numerous residential
condominium projects that were initiated in Cebu during the
real estate boom in the early to mid-'90s. Ms. Campo said
between 30% and 40% of Gold Coast Tower was sold before the
company decided to temporarily stop construction work.

Cebu lacks infrastructure to lure high-end travelers

Although Cebu has the capacity to attract the world's upscale and high-spender travelers, it lacks some basic infrastructure to become a competitive high-end destination in Asia.

Five-star and deluxe hotel accommodations and fine beaches could already be a tool to take the attention of wealthy travelers, but Cebu's shopping component still needs to be improved.

Department of Tourism (DOT) on the Philippine Tourism Marketing Strategy in Japan, senior consultant Colin Marson suggested that Cebu should build a shopping village located near the high-end resorts in Mactan to give easy shopping access for tourists.

Marson said this shopping village should house shops that carry strong international brands, or signature names in retail so that upscale visitors would be able to have its complete vacation in Cebu.

Shopping goes along with tourism, in Cebu however, although there are a few shops in the malls that are also carrying well-known international brands, most of these brands are not attractive for the wealthy foreigners.

However, this weakness could mean an opportunity for investors to consider this facility, although their market could largely be the high-end foreigners, and the sophisticated Filipino consumers.

He suggested inviting shops like Prada, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and other luxury brands.
"This would not be a bigger shopping square, but it commands exclusively for high-end consumers especially the tourists, that should be located near a destination, like in Mactan Island," Marson recommended.

Likewise, Filipino tourism player, Robert Lim Joseph, the chairman of National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (NAITAS) said high-end shopping, as well as food and beverage facilities should be built in Cebu to strengthen the province' bid, and maximize its potential becoming a high-end destination in Asia.

"Please do not sell them cheap things. We want them to spend money here, let's invite high-end shops here," Joseph said in his recent visit to Cebu.

According to Joseph, there is no question if Cebu can attract rich market abroad because of its magnetic charm for tourists, but if infrastructure and support facilities are not there, they might as well go to other places, like Thailand, Bali, Hawaii, and other destinations.

On the other hand, DOT-7 regional director Patria Aurora Roa said although a shopping facility with upscale shops, which should be located near the five-star resorts in Mactan could be a great help to fully develop Cebu as premier destination, the problem is "who is willing to build now?"

Roa said investors will pour in their money if they will be able see a good business out of it. However, building these facilities require huge amount of investment, as well as difficulties to invite these kinds of brand name shops in Cebu.

Or maybe build a new mall located near Mactan high end resort, ( Ayala Center Mactan or Robinsons place Mactan) not a very huge mall huh, maybe a medium size only with international brand shops - good idea ? I think we must call the attention of the Ayala and other mall developer.

Pumar stops Lefele in 7 Seizes WBC International minimumweight crown

The youthful Gabriel Pumar, in a scintillating display of brute strength and firepower, captured the World Boxing Council (WBC) International minimumweight crown by scoring a fantastic seventh-round knockout of defending champion Tshepo Lefele of South Africa yesterday at the Wembley Indoor Arena in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Pumar, who puts his hometown Lapu-Lapu City in the international map of boxing with his historic feat, is only the second Filipino fighter to win a major title in South Africa next to Bert Batawang of SGG Stable, who dethroned Sipthemble Kibiti also by seventh round knockout to win the WBA Pan-African light flyweight belt on November 20, 2004 at the Oliver Tambo Hall in Capetown, SA.

Pumar actually scored a total of four knockdowns as he also sent the hapless South African down on both knees in the fifth round, but referee Andy Smale ruled it a slip.

Pumar again floored Lefele in round six and then mercilessly flattened the South African twice in the next round, the last was so lethal that it forced the third man on the ring to intervene and halt the bout. The official time was 2:56 of round seven.

"Pumar showed a very impressive performance. I really didn't expect he would win that convincingly. I'm very happy for him. He deserves all the credit.," Pumar's manager Rex "Wakee" Salud told The Freeman via overseas call.

Aside from stretching his unbeaten record to 9-0 now spiked with six stoppages, Pumar is also expected to shot up in the WBC ratings as his victim is ranked No.2 105-pounder by the prestigious organization.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza, a supporter of Pumar, was very elated with Pumar's masterful conquest that he will tender a grand welcome and victory bash after Pumar and his entourage arrive at 12:30 pm today at the Mactan International Airport.

"I'm very happy that my son was very lucky enough to pull one big win abroad," said Pumar's father Pablo.

Pumar's stablemate, Benedict Suico, was not as lucky though as he lost by unanimous decision to Mhikiza Myekeni in their 12-round battle for the WBC International flyweight championship.

Boxing from behind the jab, Myekeni, who was in fine physical condition, piled up the points against Suico, who was missing badly throughout the fight.

The feverish Suico, however, still deserved an honorable mention for putting up a brave stand despite being stricken with tonsilitis going into the match.

The scores were 119-110, 120-108 and 119-109, all in favor of Myekeni.

"Suico was in top form. It's just unfortunate that he was caught up with fever," said Salud.

Initially, three of Salud's boxers were scheduled to fight in the explosive "Parade of Champions" fight card, but Mercito Gesta failed in the final medical exam, promoting the event organizers to scrap his bout with WBC International featherweight title-holder Jeffrey Mathebula.

A flyover will also be constructed at the junction near Mabolo Church.

So basically, the suggestion of the homeowners and the Carmelite sisters to build the flyover at the Mabolo Church vicinity instead is a bit "redundant."

CEBU is an island province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas region. Its capital is Cebu City. Cebu Island is a long narrow island that stretches 225 km (140 mi) from north to south and is surrounded by 167 neighboring small islands, including Mactan Island, Bantayan, Daanbantayan, Malapascua, Olango the Camotes Islands, etc.

Cebu is one of the most developed provinces in the country. The Metropolitan Area of Cebu or Metro Cebu (which includes Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City) is second only to Metro Manila in population in the country.

Cebu lies to the east of Negros Island; to the east is Leyte and to the southeast is Bohol province. It is flanked on both sides by the straits of Cebu (between Cebu and Bohol) and Tañon (between Cebu and Negros).

Cebu is served by Mactan-Cebu International Airport, which is located in Lapu-Lapu City, some thirty minutes drive from downtown Cebu
City.

Yeah, ShangriLa has a high-end mall in the heart of Ortigas.

I don't recognize the Marina Mall a mall. You could just count the shops with your fingers and it does not have a department store. But anyway, Savemore Supermarket is really a big help to Mactan shoppers. (Gaisano Mactan - Supermarket is really dirty...) :D

Legislator: Study possibility of
starting classes in September

A member of the Cebu Provincial Board is asking education officials to look into the possibility of starting classes in September instead of the usual June.

Juan Bolo, who also serves as the chairman of the provincial board's committee on education, said he would seek on Monday the approval of a resolution asking Provincial Schools Division Superintendent Recaredo Borgonia to initiate public consultations on the possibility.

The suggestion, Bolo said, originated from Senate President Franklin Drilon, who wanted to spare schoolchildren from rains during the rainy season, which usually starts in June.

If the consultation turns out positive and the proposal approved this year, then classes from 2007 onwards would start every September.

But before any changes could be adopted, a public consultation should be conducted in order to "determine the pulse of the public."

NEDA-7 director Marlene Rodriguez said that the coming ASEAN summit is expected to boost Cebu's business and tourism that would help improve the region's economic situation.

She added that at present, the region is doing very well as it posted a 6.4-percent economic growth compared to last year's 5.9 percent.

"We also have better inflation situation now," she stressed.

In a report during the meeting of the Regional Development Council last Friday at the DepEd Ecotech Center in Lahug, Rodriguez said there are positive indicators of continued economic growth in Central Visayas.

"By how much, it remains a question as it would depend on the success of the government and private sector collaboration in seizing market opportunities and reducing cost of business," she said, adding that with good economic prospects, employment is also expected to improve.

Further, she said that the markets of major sectors like tourism, real estate, housing and construction, exports and drivers of the rural economy present opportunities. These major sectors are established with pipeline capacity to generate dollar inflows, employment compensation, new investment and businesses.

"And because of the ASEAN, we would be able to attain all these and expect growth in these prospects," Rodriguez said.

For the year 2004 and 2005, NEDA reported that the region's growth drivers -exports, tourism and services exhibited increases.

Exports experienced double-digit growth and reached US$1.3 billion and US$ 4.7 billion for the fourth quarter of 2004 and the whole year of 2005, respectively.

Rodriguez also said that in terms of tourist arrivals and air transport services, data show increases in the number of flights and passengers. However, she did not provide figures.

Employment indicators also improved as employment in special economic zones increased and the number of deployed overseas workers went up.

However, despite the lower inflation rate, NEDA noted increases in the prices of selected food items in the region like cereal preparations, eggs, fish, fruits and vegetables, meat, miscellaneous foods and meals eaten outside.

Also most of the municipalities celebrate fiestas of their patron saints in April and May, the most famous of which is in the island of Bohol.

Roa said a task force is expected to be formed, coordinating agencies like the Philippine National Police, Department of Transportation and Communication, DOT, Department of Health and local government units, to make sure trouble is prevented with the holding of the said celebrations.

Over 700,000 tourist arrivals annually in Central Visayas.

Last year domestic tourists in the region reached 503,273 while foreign tourist last year reached 210,794 from January to June.

Budget Hotel Chain Eyes Cebu as Site for Future Expansion

CEBU CITY, April 3 Asia Pulse - A Filipino hotel chain is seriously looking into the possibility of building a property here in Cebu that would serve the emerging foreign backpacker market.
Jake Mercado II, marketing manager of Kabayan Hotel, said that building a hotel in Cebu is being considered since the tourism industry here is booming.

Although the Kabayan Hotel initially targeted Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), it also serves the domestic travelers from other provinces, Mercado said.

Kabayan Hotel, which is owned by the Legend Hotels International Corp., is enjoying high occupancy rates.

"Our average occupancy rate is 98 per cent," he said.

Aside from this, the hotel is starting to attract foreign backpackers who prefer lower-priced accommodations, Mercado said.

He said that 43 per cent of their guests are OFWs while 36 per cent are domestic travelers, eight per cent of whom are from Cebu.

Already, they have been turning down reservations at times because both its Pasay and Cubao hotels are fully occupied, he said.

To meet the growing demand, he said, Kabayan Hotel Pasay will be adding 154 rooms while another hotel is under construction and will be completed by the third quarter of this year.

While the Kabayan hotel will continue to serve the OFW market, Mercado said, they will be serving foreign budget travelers.

The feedback the hotel got from the foreign guests who availed of the family rooms, which can accommodate six persons, showed that foreign guests prefer to have a space of their own even if it's at a higher price, he said.

Because of this, Mercado noted, Kabayan Hotel will be offering the Lakbayan rooms. These rooms will be available in the 3rd quarter, he added, and will offer cheaper accommodation with privacy.

Paseo Center Cebu set to open in Arcenas Estate :)

ARCENAS Estate, an exclusive mixed-use real property development in Banawa, Cebu City, is developing the initial phase of its commercial development called Paseo Center Cebu.

Arcenas Group of Companies President Danny Arcenas said that the Paseo will cater to the more than 40% of Cebu City’s population residing in Cebu City south.

The 30-unit, two-storey Paseo Center Cebu, is a one-stop shop neighborhood commercial center expected to open in September. It will offer complete shopping, dining, entertainment, health, fitness, banking, hardware, and sufficient parking. It will also house Rustan’s Supermarket Fresh, which will open in April. The second phase will be a bigger commercial center with retail stores like a mini-mall.

Arcenas Estate is the only development in the city large enough for mixed-use like residential, commercial, I.T. and leisure. Aside from Paseo Center Cebu, Arcenas Estate is also home of Paseo San Ramon, Casa Rosita and Convergys.

Capitol eyes P1.2M earnings with dev’t of Banilad property

Next year, the Cebu Provincial Government is expected to earn almost P1.2 million a month with the development of its prime lot in Banilad, Cebu City.

Yesterday, Capitol held a pre-bid conference with four firms expressing interest in developing the place. Two of these are SM companies, one is a Malaysian firm while the fourth is a Cebu-based firm.

The winning bidder will have a one-year construction period.

P2M rental

After signing the contract with the Province as soon as the facility is operational, the company will start paying the almost P2 million rental a month.

Capitol will hold the bidding on April 26; the signing of contract will immediately follow.

A year after the signing of contract, the firm will start to pay at least P200,000 to the Provincial Government. The amount, however, will escalate by five percent after the first five years of operation.

As soon as the facility is completed, it will be turned over to the Capitol and the firm will just be given the rights to operate it within 25 years.

Capitol has set that the facility to be built must be at least worth P250 million and upon its completion, Capitol will start to collect P999,740 as rental.

“This is a prime commercial project in a very strategic location. The Province will be earning without selling the property,” she said.

Sonny O.’s firm

Among those who submitted the letter of intent for the project was former senator John “Sonny” Osmeña’s firm. But like several other interested bidders, it failed to submit the financial, technical and legal papers that Capitol was asking.

Osmeña had questioned the ownership of the lot saying it was within the Friar’s Land, which is owned by the National Government.

Lately, however, a ruling was issued stating that those who possess titles for the lots within the Friar Land are considered real owners of the property. (MBG)

Film making in Cebu to boost economy
Published: 30 March 2006

Cebu's economy will receive a boost from a new source - film production by Bigfoot Entertainment, which is scheduled to start shooting a film later this year.

"We have a couple of different films written for Cebu. We are hoping to bring out international actors. We will also be hiring some local talents, either from Manila or from Cebu," said Kacy Andrews, chief operating officer of Bigfoot Entertainment.

The shooting of feature films in Cebu would have a financial impact on the community, Andrews pointed out.

"Film making will bring a lot of wealth to the community. For every dollar spent on the film, US$10 is spent in the community. If the film costs US$1 million, US$10 million is poured into the community," she added.

Film productions would create jobs and boost businesses, such as those involved in food catering, transportation and accommodations, she said. "We will buy props, wardrobe clothing and others," Andrews said.
The jobs would be varied and would require various skills on top of actual production work.

"Each position requires different skills, such as prop person, costume designer, editor, cameraman, cinematographer and hair and make up assistants," she said.

With the upcoming production, Bigfoot would hire between 40 to 60 local people, she said.

Bigfoot would also like to attract Hollywood film companies to do their shooting in Cebu since its facility in Mactan could support all aspects of film production, Andrews said.

She said Prague, New Zealand and Canada are among the favored sites for shooting films among Hollywood film companies.

Andrews said the presence of a real sound stage would enable Cebu to attract location film shoots.

"Hollywood is always looking for cheaper, interesting locations," Andrews said.

Such places as Prague, New Zealand and Canada are among Hollywood's favored sites for location shooting, she said.

However, there is no reason why Cebu could not become an attractive location, where the dollars go further, Andrews added.

Bigfoot has started to market Cebu as an ideal place for film production. So far, some music videos, audio-visual presentations and commercials have been shot in Bigfoot's sound stage.

Don't base on that article. It's old. Recently, the Metro Area has been expanded until Danao City in the north and Carcar in the South. But, I dunno if Toledo City is part of the scope since it's in the extreme west.

this news is absurd! while it may sound good and compassionate to the needy, we now say goodbye to quality education, while mr. tom osmeña is battling the city's low literacy rate, and the low performance in national assesment exams, we have this courtesy of some cebu city officials. i dont think this fits a city with a "queen" status. a queen with a majestic crown but an empty head? we dont want that to happen, do we?

Cebu City to offer 2-year high school

Starting this June, the Cebu City Schools Division will offer a two-year high school program aimed at reducing the dropout rate in public schools and helping families that can’t afford a four-year secondary education.

The program will only be offered in seven public secondary schools selected as pilot areas. These schools can accommodate up to 1,500 students.

While it is seen to aggravate the problem on the shortage of classrooms and teachers, Joy Augustus Young is confident the program will be effective in encouraging students to at least finish second year high school.

Young, the mayor’s consultant on education, admitted they will face a shortage of classrooms and teachers, but he expects everything to normalize after two years, when the students complete their two-year training.

The City Government will set aside P5 million more for the program, on top of the P30 million the National Government provides annually for the salary of the night high school teachers.

“We’ve noted a high dropout rate in the first and second year in high school and with this program, we will increase the number of students finishing their first two years. Basically, this is for the students who can’t afford to complete the four years,” Young told reporters yesterday.

Admission to the two-year program will be on a “first come, first served” basis, he said.

Under the program, the students will still be given the same subjects and training in English, Math and Science offered to regular high school students but these will be taught differently, Young explained.

Lessons in English, for example, will focus more on conversational English while Math and Science will focus on the practical application of the lessons.

After their second year, the students will be given a certificate of proficiency.

If they decide to complete the remaining two years in high school, the students may do so either through the distance learning system, or modular instruction, or take the accreditation and equivalency exam.

Students who pass the exam automatically become eligible for college.

“We have a better chance of providing two years of training to more children because many are not willing to sacrifice for four years, especially those who can’t afford it,” Young added.

Among the those chosen as pilot areas are the high schools in Barangays Talamban, Pardo, Mabolo and some public science high schools.

Since more classrooms will be needed during the day to accommodate the students taking the two-year program, Young expects more students to be transferred to the night high schools.

But he also expects the student-classroom ratio to improve gradually since there will be fewer students enrolled in the four-year program during the day

I've been lurking around the Cebu threads for a bit so I could get a better idea to prepare myself for our senior class Habitat For Humanity trip and I have to say, you guys really do a good job in updating the rest of us on the latest happenings! Keep 'em going and hopefully by June, I will be able to have enough knowledge to showcase my senior class what Cebu has to offer beyond than just being a place we're sent to through HFH.

Don't base on that article. It's old. Recently, the Metro Area has been expanded until Danao City in the north and Carcar in the South. But, I dunno if Toledo City is part of the scope since it's in the extreme west.

Toledo is not included. Only Carcar, San Fernando and Danao City were added.

i believe its called the Madagascar palm tree, and its part of the P700,000 for landscaping and beautification in the South Reclamation Project (SRP), particularly the portion of the old Kawit Island.

PeopleSupport reports record profits

ONE of the biggest call center operations in the country reported on Monday a sharp rise in earnings as old and new clients delivered a strong revenue stream last year.

The US-listed PeopleSupport said its net income rose by 75 percent in 2005 to $22.8 million from $8.3 million in the previous year.

In the fourth quarter of 2005, the Los Angeles, California-based company's profit reached $12.3 million from only $3.3 million in the same period of 2004.

"I am very pleased with PeopleSupport's excellent results for the fourth quarter and full year 2005," said PeopleSupport Philippines president Rainerio Borja. "We surpassed our revenue growth expectations for 2005, and finished the year with solid overall performance."

The company reported gross revenues of $17 million in the fourth quarter of last year -- a record high -- representing a 35-percent increase from the fourth quarter for 2004.

Borja said the company expanded its business process outsourcing services in January, and launched operations in Costa Rica to tap the Spanish-speaking market.

The company has opened a recruitment center in Davao City to tap a southern-based workforce for its sites in Manila and Cebu City.

At the end of 2005, it had 4,000 employees in its Manila and Cebu call centers.

PeopleSupport is listed on the Nasdaq exchange. It recently completed its first year as a publicly listed company.

Borja said it reported the fastest growth in performance and profitability among its peers.

MT Academy in Cebu
April 4th, 2006 by jorge

Medical transcription (MT) is the process of transforming dictation of physicians and other healthcare professionals to written text. This written text may be stored as printed and/or electronic data. Increasingly, electronic medical records are the preferred means of data storage, allowing medical professionals the ability to access information regardless of geographical distance.

An individual who performs medical transcription is known as a medical transcriptionist or, less frequently, a medical transcriber. A transcriber should possess an excellent command in a language from which the transcription is based on. Quite incidentally, English language is often the most preferred medium in the medical transcription industry.

The proficiency in the English language among many Cebuanos is one of the plus factors that make them potential workers for medical transcription, one of the fastest growing industries in the country today along with contact centers.

Seeing the bright future and the incredible potential of the medical transcription industry in the country, particularly Cebu, a Manila-based MT school, MTC Academy, is branching out to Cebu. MTC Academy Cebu is its 25th branch in the country and its first in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. It is located at the Mango Square Mall in Cebu City.

MTC Academy is the country’s first and largest TESDA-registered medical transcription training program. MTCA’s medical transcription training system combines the best in US training programs mixed with local medical transcription service company requirements to complement the strengths and weaknesses of the Filipino.

But before jumping on the bandwagon, check out yourself first if you really have the makings of a good MT based on the following skills and attributes.

1. Must have no hearing impairment.
2. Must type at least 20 words per minute.
3. Must have excellent English oral and written skills.
4. Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft XP and Microsoft Word
5. Must be familiar with usage of the internet.
6. Must have extreme attention to detail and be a perfectionist at heart.

If you think you have what it takes to be a good MT then don’t waste time. Charter your future now with MTC Academy Cebu.

wow, it's been 5 days since i posted my last msg. guess where i'm at right now! haha...

i arrived earlier today and i have some stuff to share with u people like my PAL flight, NAIA T2 and Mactan Airport photos (will upload soon). i had a quick chat with our Club Ultima agent this afternoon over the phone but i wasnt able to gather more information since it was already past office hours.

in December 2005 shortly after i left for Manila, Club Ultima sent us a letter regarding their latest update and project development. it goes like this:

==============================================
Dear Valued Club Ultima Member,

Our company is in the process of designing an office and residential twin towers located beside Fuente Towers 1 (Club Ultima) and Tower 2 (Crown Regency Hotel).

As our most valued member, we would like to find out if you would be most interested in owning a unit so we could give priority to you since the availability of office and residential units will be limited.

The Project:
A 2,000 sq.m. lot located along side existing Fuente Towers 1 and 2 with the following facilities and amenities:

Parking: Secured 2-level basement parking with additional parking on the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th floors. all linked to the fuente towers.

Commercial spaces: Ground floor to the 2nd floor. (restaurants, etc.)

Office units: 7th and 8th floor with 30 sq.m. floor area.

Podium: A bridgeway at the 9th floor which provides direct access to the swimming pool facilities of Tower 2 (Crown Regency Hotel).

Residential units: From the 9th floor up. soon to rise residential twin towers with 16 units per floor with 30 sq.m. floor area and a 20 sq.m. loft.

The offer for the first fifty units exclusively for Club members:

Residential units
Pre-selling price Php 1.8M

Office units
Pre-selling price Php 1.5M

==============================================

We've already sent a letter of intent on both residential and commercial units. :) I was told that construction starts at the end of this year. the 2,000 sq.m. area is the lot between Metrobank Plaza bldg and Tower 2 (Crown Regency Hotel). the complex is called "Fuente Towers Triangle".

will they really put up two towers on that lot since they call it as "TWIN TOWERS"?

will this project be taller than the upcoming Tower 2 (38-storeys) since every level has a space provisioned for loft. meaning, the height of ceiling should be taller than the usual single-level condo units.

well, i'm setting up an appointment with my agent to clarify all these. so stay tuned nalang for updates ;)

It's so great to be back!! i won't be here for long, let's have group EB! hehe. i'm kinda busy with all those family affair stuff these days though and we're staying at Princeville Executive Villas this weekend! alright!

I need to scroll up (really fast!) for the meantime to read the previous posts and other threads! :D congrats nga pala for Cebu Thread XXI! we rock!

wow, so huge!

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/cebupics/megadome/cicc_render.jpg

Among the features of the CICC is the glass at the middle of the roof with a beam holding it, which looks like an inverted C.

Architect Guanzon said this will give the CICC an element distinct from other structures.

Underneath the glass roof is a big lobby that would look like it is “floating” because of a water effect that will surround it.

If you feel like crying, please do. Whether you like it or not, The Queen City will be the center of attention in the whole South East Asia come December.

Let them answer our questions @Resty...

based on the rendering, is it almost as huge as SM? Coz IMO eventhough it will only have 3 kevels, it will be visible from afar. It also looks like a white elephant coz of its color.

im just wondering, how about the fuente tower 3 ? i remember (i read it / i think thread XIX) that they will build tower 3 to compliment the two existing tower (club ultima and crown regency hotel). if im not mistaken tower 3 is shorter that the crown regency hotel. and i think it will be build between metrobank plaza and club ultima building (the shortest tower). im confused. i think the space (between metrobank plaza and club ultima ) is very small for a two tower to be build. i hope they will build the twin tower in a vacant lot next to fuente rotunda.

Cebu firm investing P1B to upgrade Mactan Resort

By Ayen Infante

04/05/2006

Local firm Benthel Resort Hotel Corp. is spending over P1 billion in the next three years to upgrade the Cordova Reef Village Resort, a world-class tourist destination located at the Southern tip of Mactan Island.

According to company executive assistant for operations, Jocelyn Catedral, the company is continuously spending to construct and upgrade its African Villas with an estimated project cost of P500,000 each. The resort has about 50 villas.

The resort which is being managed by the Grasshopper Management Corp., has a total land area of 20 hectares, Catedral said and is eyeing to put up more villas and other amenities since total land area occupied at present is about eight hectares.

The resort is banking on further attracting foreign visitors through its Island and Sun Beach Resort, a 25-room floating Hotel which is about 20 minutes ride by boat from the resort. “ We keep on upgrading and renovating our rooms and expanding to the breakwater,” Catedral added.

With room rates ranging from $150 to $300 a night, Catedral said “The company can afford to choose clients who are mostly Koreans, Japanese, Russians and Europeans.”

About 90 percent of the resort’s regular guests are Koreans and Japanese and very seldom local tourists.

The resort experience ranges from free servings of fresh fruits from their own fruit-bearing trees with the resort, baking its own bread and free welcome drinks and fruits.

Apart from these, the facility has its own river osmosis water equipment to make sure it has clean water and generator set.

Other facilities include swimming pool, spa, boutique, gym, tennis court, billiard room, aviary, orchid garden, wine room and cellar, function rooms for 100 persons, among others.

Water activities include jet ski, para sail, kayak, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing and island hopping (Hilutungan Island) and freetour to Island and Sun Beach Resort. The company started operating in December 1996.

@ slimer, mantawi is not as huge as sinulog and that trucks, cranes and piles of soil is not part of the preparation of mantawi festival, they will not build a structure just for mantawi. That development is a sign that the construction of the boardwalk mall is on the way coz last march 19 when we went sa site mismo ni markiiboi, it was still fenced and a some areas are grassy and theres nothing in there but now with what you saw a while ago I believe that it's about the construction of the cebu boardwalk mall.

Cebu to host int’l congress

More than 200 delegates from 40 countries around the world will be coming to Cebu this month for an international congress against terrorism.

Cebu Gov. Garcia said that Gen. Benjamin Defensor, former chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and head of the country’s task force against terrorism, met with her two days ago to coordinate for the activity.

‘Beautiful island’

“This is a very major international event on this beautiful island, and a National Government endeavor, so Cebu will just support it in every way we can,” she said.

Garcia said the Cebu Provincial Government will host a dinner for the delegates of the international congress, which will run for three days this third week of April.

The event will be held at the Shangri-la Hotel in Mactan Island.

A major official from Washington in the United States will be among the delegates, to be composed of officials involved in the campaign against terrorism in each of the participating countries.

The gathering is an offshoot of what was discussed in the last meeting of Apec-member countries,” Garcia said.

“We are really becoming not just a convention capital but summit capital, and not just in the country or region, but the world.

All of these things are happening to Cebu, so we should prove ourselves equal to the opportunities presented to us,” she told reporters in a press conference yesterday.

Rush

As of now, the Capitol is rushing the work on the P250-million Cebu International Convention Center that would rise in Mandaue City.

Groundbreaking for the structure is scheduled for tomorrow, in time for Mandaue City’s celebration of its 485th foundation day celebration.

The convention center is targeted to be completed in time for the Asean Ministers’ Summit this December. (JPM)

Nice! this is reinforcing Gov. Garcia's stand on putting up a world-class convention center. the present activities in Cebu only goes to show that the CICC is a very feasible project.

@ArnoldSa: u mentioned earlier that your cousin is involved in this project. do u have any figures regarding the max capacity of the convention center? will it also have a theater/stage like the PICC? or let's say Kodak Theater (home of the Oscar's Academy)? :D

The entrances across the proposed building are closed too. The road across those entrances are also closed. Anyway, I'll post a larger and clearer version of the traffic advisory in a few minutes.

PNB, foreign firm talks on Coral Reef property

Published: 06 April 2006
by Irene R. Sino Cruz

THE Philippine National Bank is negotiating with a foreign investor regarding the development a new resort at the Coral Reef property in Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu City, Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said.

Durano, who graced the last day of the Cebu leg of the 1st Tourism Jobs Fair held at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, said he is not at liberty to disclose any details while negotiations are still ongoing.

He said the plan is to build a 1,000-room resort at the property foreclosed by the bank from its previous owner.

Durano had been urging Lucio Tan to re-develop the Coral Reef property to help alleviate the shortage in accommodations here in Cebu.

Durano also lauded the existing properties for doing what they can to address the shortage.

"Plantation Bay, for example, has opened up new rooms. These are all helping to make the supply chain more flexible," he added.
The Cebu Parklane International Hotel is also set to open in May while Marco Polo Plaza (former Cebu Plaza Hotel) has made available some rooms and will be fully opened soon.

He noted though that the shortage in accommodations would continue despite efforts to address it.

Although there are a number of properties being developed, he said that the supply of rooms would continue to be tight over the medium term.

However, Durano said, the continued increase in demand will encourage investors to put up tourism projects to serve the market.

In the meantime, he said, the department is trying to promote destinations that are under-utilized.

Last year, Durano also helped convince Metrobank to look for a hotel management company to take over the foreclosed hotel property in Nivel Hills, Lahug, Cebu City.

The Metrobank group reached an agreement with the Marco Polo group for the management of the former Cebu Plaza Hotel.

The Metrobank group also invested millions of pesos for a major renovation of the hotel.

The tourism secretary has also talked with the SM group regarding the property beside SM City Cebu, which has yet to be completed.

40 countries to converge in Cebu

CEBU CITY: Law enforcers from 40 countries will gather in Cebu on April 17 for an antiterrorism summit.

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia of Cebu said participants in the International Congress Against Terrorism will discuss specific programs to fight terrorism around the world.

“This will be participated in by those involved in the antiterrorism campaign in each of their countries, including high-ranking officials,” Garcia said.

He said over 200 delegates, including participants from Europe and the United States, will attend the summit, which will run for three to four days at the Shangri-La Mactan Island Resort in Lapu-Lapu City.

Garcia said at least one official from Washington, D.C., will participate in the event.

The identity of the US official, as well as several others, could not yet be disclosed, he said.

A man identified by capitol officials as an official from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation visited the governor’s office Wednesday.

Details of the governor’s meeting with the FBI official were not disclosed to the media.

Garcia said the antiterrorism summit was an offshoot of the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting held in Busan, South Korea, late last year.

Mandaue City aims to penetrate the global economic arena
By Bon JP Largo
The Freeman 04/07/2006

The recent and upcoming development events in the city prompted Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano to say, "Today, Mandaue is a force to reckon with."

Currently, the economic excitement in Mandaue City is concentrated on the Mandaue Reclamation Area where the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) will be built. Other developments in the area are the construction of the new Cebu Doctors' University campus, the Cebu Boardwalk and the Taft Information Technology Zone. Further details about each project are however unavailable.

The reclamation project, Ouano said is a showcase of Mandaue City's sound financial management. "Built without us spending a single centavo, we are starting to reap the maximum benefits that convention center brings to the city and the province," he added.

Today is the groundbreaking ceremony of the CICC and Ouano, with the rest of the Mandaue populace, is excited about it.

"We are not contended with just being an industrial hub. We wanted to be competitive in the global economic arena. Hence, we charted a blueprint to enhance our competitiveness. We now want to provide our investors a venue where our products can be displayed for international buyers to appreciate, a venue where the investment for meetings and conferences can be held, a venue where entrepreneurship and craftsmanship can be shown to the rest of the world," Ouano said in his speech during the opening of the Mandaue Trade Fair Exhibit yesterday evening.

The convention center he said would be the catalyst of growth that will catapult Mandaue to be the next destination in the world of tourism, investment and business.

Also, the proposed Cebu International Trade and Exhibition Center (CITEX) have been endorsed by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) to JICA for funding. Full article (http://www.philstar.com/philstar/Freeman200604072001.htm)

Tom eyes "super block" at North Recla Project

Mayor Tomas Osmeña is planning to create a "super block" out of three independent blocks of land at the North Reclamation Project.

The city government also intends to sell its 4.6-hectare property at the North Reclamation Area to business tycoon John Gokongwei who, Osmeña said, has expressed interest in converting the property into a commercial area.

Osmeña said proceed from the sale of this property, which is located beside the White Gold Club, would be utilized either as a standby fund or for payment of the city's loan for the South Reclamation Project.

While there is direct interest from Gokongwei, Osmeña said they would have to follow legal procedures such as the conduct of a bidding. However, he is reportedly anticipating two biddings for the property considering that only Gokongwei is interested to purchase.

If there will be a failure of bidding in the first try, the second may already result to a negotiated purchase of approximately P580 million. Full article (http://www.philstar.com/philstar/FREEMAN200604071805.htm)

i'm just assuming they'll put up a robinson's mall or sumthing once Gokongwei acquires the lot. it could be a business center, basta commercial area. according to the article, the lot is beside or in between White Gold Club and Cebu International Port. it has to be somewhere before SM City complex. by the way, mata pa lagi ka? hehe i'll doze off in a while.
