Henz July 29th, 2012, 06:52 AM unfortunately, gipatas-an na ang income requirement para mamahimong city...it is now: locally generated income (excluding IRA) of at least PHP 100 million for the last two consecutive years.
Locally generated income:
Consolacion:
2011 = PHP 51,683,138
2010 = PHP 51,283,282
Balamban:
2011 = PHP 33,885,172
2010 = PHP 31,988,578
layo-layo pa jud intawn before ni sila ma-qualify as cities based sa new requirement. Naga, Carcar and Bogo qualified for cityhood based on the old requirement (PHP 20 million including IRA)
^^ Aw kay bawal man ang retroactive application of the laws. So dili na na ma revert ang Naga, Carcar og Bogo. Pero ang Consolacion og Balamban na-timingan man nga naa na'y bag-ong policy, so dugay(2x) pajud intawn.
Let us take note na wala pa mo reflect ani ang income which will be generated sa Consolacion sa operations sa SM City Consolacion and of course with the thriving of the industries in line with its establishments such as commercial, retail and entertainment strips. I noticed that after SM opened there was a spike of construction going on in the area..
For Balamban, wala pa sad ma reflect ang income here to be generated by the new manufacturer Austal. It is possible that the LGU will collect around P/20M a year for the company, not to mention the underlying industries which will be generated with the presence of the company. Although in my calculation, Balamban will still not qualify in the next three to five years. However, Consolacion is a strong contender by 2014...

indeed, present-day Cebu City is a product of the merging of the municipalities of Pardo, San Nicolas, Mabolo and Talamban.

MEGAWORLD Corp.’s, biggest project in Cebu so far, The Mactan Newtown, is now a special economic zone registered under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza).
In a press statement, Megaworld said the 16-hectare township development will enjoy privileges granted by the national government under Republic Act 7916, the Special Economic Zone Act of 1995.
Win US$500. Join Sun.Star Cebu Yearbook Video Contest.
These include special tax incentives and holidays to business establishments and permanent resident status for foreigners who have a certain amount of investments in the eco-zone.
Megaworld said the government’s declaration of The Mactan Newtown as a special economic zone highlights “the development’s use for tourism, information technology and retirement.”
The P10-billion project will house residential condominium buildings, business process outsourcing (BPO) buildings, retail and entertainment strips, and an upscale boutique hotel. This is the company’s first development in Metro Cebu that is expected to boost the economic landscape of Mactan.
“Megaworld sees the opportunities of growth of the BPO industry in Cebu. With this, we expect new BPO companies coming in as we offer the most modern BPO offices in this side of the country,” says Jericho Go, first vice-president, Business Development and Leasing Division, Megaworld Corp.
The company has completed construction of the five-storey One World Center, which will offer upper floors for office spaces and the ground floor for retail shops. The company is working on another BPO-ready building, Two World Center, and 8 Newtown Boulevard, a residential condominium that will also allocate three floors of office spaces.
Megaworld Corp. was named the country’s top residential condominium developer, cornering a 16 percent share of the property market in a study by CB Richard Ellis. A study conducted by Colliers International, meanwhile, recognized the company as the top provider of BPO offices in the last 10 years.

Power Firm Eyes New Coal-Fired Plant In Cebu Province
Manila Bulletin
July 29, 2012, 7:13pm
CEBU CITY (PNA) — Global Business Power Corp. (GBP) plans to build an updated
82-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Toledo City and put the existing Toledo
Power Company plant on standby.
GBP president Arthur Aguilar said the old plant still works well, operating for at
least 200 days straight with no hitches but in other countries, similar plants
would already have been retired as equipment for them are no longer being
manufactured.

From Danao to Mandaue, Visayas gun makers shoot for global weapons market
29-Jul-12, 9:24 AM | Manuel Mogato, Reuters
MANDAUE CITY, Philippines - In the Philippines, they vote with their trigger fingers. Elections mean big business for illegal gunsmiths, who are looking forward to the 2013 mid-term polls.
With election-related violence commonplace, the Philippines imposes a ban on the carrying of guns for six months, from campaigning to the proclamation of winners.
With legal access denied, Filipinos simply turn to the many illegal gunsmiths who ply their trade in back alleys and on the edge of rice fields despite government crackdowns.
In Danao City, in the northeast of Cebu, they are already anticipating a windfall.

hans boy July 30th, 2012, 06:49 AM Just wanna share,
I persuaded my landlord to try and visit our beloved Cebu instead of his usual ASEAN destinations Bangkok, Phuket, Bali, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.
And so, he did for 3 weeks. But most of his time were spent in Malapascua and Bantayan islands because he said that my/our city is under construction. Good thing I told him about Malapascua and Bantayan, and these islands saved his holiday and disappointments in our under construction city.
bakasaurus July 30th, 2012, 06:57 AM Hahaha.. Nice job bai @hans.
Actually, I liked his euphemism when he said Cebu City is under construction. It was a wise choice of words on his part. It is actually true. It expressed both his implied impression of a messy city, but at the same time, I think he realized the growing potential of Cebu and that it could turn out to be a quite developed city in the future. (Well aside from literally, the number of real constructions, and T-cranes happening)

emperorkarl July 30th, 2012, 01:21 PM Capitol, City Hall bare plan to build a bridge connecting NBI, DA compound
By Oscar C. Pineda
Saturday, July 28, 2012
CITY Hall and Capitol deem it more necessary to build a bridge near the Capitol than pouring cement on certain roads in the city.
This, as Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia announced yesterday that Capitol and City Hall will build a bridge from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) office on Escario St. to the Department of Agriculture (DA) compound on M. Velez St., Cebu City.
Garcia said the joint project of the City and the Province will ease the traffic near Escario and the Capitol, and provide an alternative access to Banawa and Guadalupe.
The governor’s announcement came a day after Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama suspended the road concreting projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways that he found “unnecessary” and were allegedly implemented without City Hall’s approval.
Among the road concreting projects that have been suspended were those on M. Velez and V. Rama Ave.

The bridge will pave the way for the continuation of Escario street connecting all the way to V. Rama avenue. Hoping this will be implemented before the BRT so that another BRT route will be added passing V. Rama avenue and turning left to Escario street.
As of now, Escario street looks "kiwaw" and seems to be unfinished because it ends right at 7-11/Capitol if you look at the map (courtesy of Google Maps) below.

CEBU, Philippines - Central Visayas ranked second to Caraga Administrative Region as both had been included in the top five list of fastest growing regions in the Philippines for year 2011 based on the recent statistical data of the National Statistical Coordination Board.
In a press statement posted on the agency’s website last July 26, Region 7 posted a 7.9% growth among the country’s seventeen regions following Caraga’s economy that recorded the fastest growth at 9.6 percent last year.
“This is a very good development for Central Visayas. Our Gross Regional Domestic Product level has reached P620 billion at current prices, the fourth biggest after National Capital Region, CALABARZON and Central Luzon,” National Economic Development Authority Assistant Regional Director Efren Carreon told The Freeman.
Aside from Region XIII and Region VII, other areas which were included in the 2011 list of top five fastest growing were Central Luzon with 7.5%, Western Visayas with 5.5% and Cagayan Valley with 5.4%. The economy of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), however, declined by 1% in 2011 from a 2.3% growth in 2010.
On the other hand, the national statistical agency cited that the economies of the three island groups reported slower growths last year from their strong performances in 2010.
“Luzon’s economy (excluding NCR) slowed down to 3.9% in 2011 from a robust performance of 8.9% in 2010; Visayas decelerated to 5.9% from 7.3% and Mindanao’s economy turned in a lackluster performance of 3.2% from 4.7%,” NSCB stated.
With the same share compared to the previous year, Luzon island with seven regions excluding NCR contributed 37.5% of the country’s total domestic output that is considered to be the largest among the island groups. Mindanao island which is comprised of six regions accounted for 14.1% of the country’s economy and Visayas island group, composed of three regions, posted a share of 12.8% in 2011 which is 0.3 percentage point higher than its 12.5% share in 2010.
In terms of the 3.9% national GDP growth in 2011, NCR also contributed at 1.3 percentage points considered as the largest, Central Luzon with 0.7 percentage point and Central Visayas and CALABARZON which contributed 0.5 percentage point each.
NSCB was created under Executive Order No. 121 issued on January 30, 1987 as the policy-making and coordinating agency on statistical matters in the Philippines.
It further aims to develop an orderly Philippine Statistical System capable of providing time, accurate, relevant, and useful data for the government and the public for planning and decision-making. (FREEMAN)

Petitions like this one are floating in the air. These should be backed by facts and research, and not be some kind of scare/meme that everybody is asked to support just because everyone else is doing so.
As far as I currently know, and this isn't exactly my subject expertise, feeding has been shown in some papers to affect fitness of reef fishes in marine conservation areas that permit them, and there might be evidence on the contrary too.
However, in the case of the whale shark, there is a very large room for study. My initial reaction and speculation is there probably are possible negative effects of feeding. However, it is a speculation and should be treated as such. I believe there is an ongoing research with the whale sharks in Oslob and I am anticipating the results, but I know it is going to be a long term research before we really see the big picture.
I could possibly argue for some of the finer points of the study pero mura og wala ra say mutubay hehe.
However, if I may state my position on the matter under the circumstances.
Why not continue the feeding for now, and let that be the experimental variable to be tested, as opposed to, say, the same ecotourism set up but without the feeding like in Donsol (for a comparative study).
We can learn if there will indeed be differences in feeding behaviour, effect on their health, on their migration, susceptibility to accidents etc. There is a lot to learn here! In any case, we are not talking of all the whale sharks here, but only a few that are in the Oslob area.
At the same time, we shouldn't advocate for the feeding of the whale sharks elsewhere, like in Moalboal. We should not endorse the activity pending the results of the ongoing study in Oslob.
Here are some links for the people interested.

US ‘anti-outsourcing’ bill junked
By Katlene O. Cacho
Monday, July 30, 2012
CEBU business process outsourcing (BPO) stakeholders welcomed the dismissal of a bill in the US Senate that they described as “anti-outsourcing.” Although this did not surprise them, the ruling to dismiss the bill gave a “major relief” to industry players.
“The decision is a relief to the industry, given the fact that it was a high-ranking official of the US who proposed it. At least we now have a closure to any proposition to stop outsourcing,” Cebu Investment and Promotions Center (CIPC) managing director Joel Mari Yu said in a phone interview yesterday.
Win US$500. Join Sun.Star Cebu Yearbook Video Contest.
Political
The President Barack Obama-backed anti-outsourcing bill failed to muster the 60 votes required for senate approval. Fifty-six senators voted to kill the bill.
Had it been passed, the bill would have eliminated tax breaks for companies outsourcing services and manufacturing jobs to other countries and provided a 20 percent tax deduction on costs associated with closing outsourced operations and transferring jobs to the US.
At least one senator, Orrin Hatch of Utah, said there is no tax break for outsourcing, referring to the “Bring Jobs Home Act.”
“It’s devoid of serious content because it is of political rather than economic priorities,” he said.
“The rejection is not surprising,” Yu said. He reiterated that for global companies to remain globally competitive, they have to reduce cost. “A surefire way to reduce cost is outsourcing. It is economic survival,” he said.
Yu said the US doesn’t only need job generation to facilitate economic recovery. It also needs companies to remain competitive.
Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) executive director Jun Sa-a supported Yu’s statement, saying that “outsourcing remains to be the logical decision in a global economy.”
“The rejection is expected because the bottomline is still competitiveness and profitability of their business,” Saa said in a text message.
“You can’t stop outsourcing because it makes good business sense,” said Cebu Business Club president Dondi Joseph.
Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Prudencio Gesta said the US senate’s rejection is “good and welcome news for Cebu since this will sustain the momentum of the industry here.”
“This is a big win for the Philippines,” Gesta said.
BPAP welcomed the dismissal of the bill.
Competitive
“Outsourcing business services to the Philippines helps make American companies more competitive and profitable,” said Benedict Hernandez, BPAP president and chief executive officer, in a statement.
He said that outsourcing is a “win-win” proposition with Filipino and American companies seen to benefit from the opportunities it provides.
President Aquino, during his recent State of the Nation Address (Sona), reported that the BPO sector alone generated 638,000 jobs and contributed $11 billion in revenues last year.
The sector is expected to achieve $25 billion in revenues and 1.3 million jobs by 2016, excluding the estimated 3.2 million indirect jobs the BPO industry can create.

A small army of 400 workers assembles revolvers and pistols at the Mandaue factory, which exports guns to the United States, Australia, Italy and Thailand.
Factory owner Romulo de Leon III, a second-generation gun dealer, quickly recognized the unusual skills developed by the illegal, backyard gunsmiths when he decided to switch from selling imported weapons to making his own.
His partly automated factory now produces about 20,000 guns a year, with up to 85 percent of them sold abroad, making him the second largest gun manufacturer in the Philippines.
With cheap labor and Filipino ingenuity, de Leon wants to expand into new markets in Eastern Europe and South America.
With more foreign markets in their gunsights, legal manufacturers hope President Benigno Aquino, a gun enthusiast who shoots competitively, will help liberalize gun laws.

I was tempted to say the same, but then, two wrongs still don't make one right as the cliche goes.
That should not be the basis for our policy making. We should base it on research results in this case.
We don't really know if these people who signed the petition are also those who are strongly opposed to caging animals such as those you mentioned. That makes our "pot calling the kettle black" argument weak.

Nice idea.
By the way, the lot beside Capitol labeled "park," I heard that it's a private property owned by an old clan in Guadalupe, the Quijadas.
I don't know if they still own it or they sold it or what.

More than 600 lose their jobs: Call center closes shop
http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=833474&publicationSubCategoryId=107
CEBU, Philippines - Business process outsourcing has been dubbed as a sunshine industry, but to more than 600 employees of a call center, the sun has set for them.
This as a Cebu-based call center company closed shop the other night leaving more than 600 jobless.
Direct Access Corporation, one of the locators at Asiatown I.T. Park in Cebu City suspended its operation effective July 30 for a period of six months due to financial losses.
Notice to employees
Jeffrey Newman, chief operating officer of the company sent notice about the closure to their employees.
The Freeman obtained a copy of the notice, which stated that employees will be notified in writing of the resumption of operations on or before the sixth month.
“If the company could not recover financially, there will be a permanent retrenchment on the sixth month where you will be paid what is due under the Philippine labor laws. Thank you for your continued understanding of the company’s situation,” the notice read.
In a complaint letter, the employees lamented that they were caught off guard with the sudden closure of the company.
The employees said that they expected to receive their salaries last July 16, but did not get any and the management allegedly promised them to pay the salaries excluding night differentials, allowances and incentives the following day.
They were also told that the balance of their salary will be paid on July 23, but they have not received it.
They also alleged that they were told that the giving of allowance will be suspended for four pay periods.
The employees added that there are also inconsistencies in the Social Security System (SSS) and Philippine Health Insurance (Philhealth) remittance of the company.
The employees also did not receive their salaries that would have been due yesterday.

Not all BPO companies like any other companies if not properly managed will succeed with the onslaught of competition. We are also sad because Direct Access is one of our client in IT Park.
However, the 600 staff will easily be absorbed by other CC companies who is currently in need. Alorica, which is also our client is aggressively hiring about 2,000 agents beginning this month, not to mention other BPO's now who are hiring more agents, so i expect those 600 or so who will lost their job might find new jobs easily.

Junx August 1st, 2012, 05:25 PM F1 star Button wants Cebu’s lechon
Cebu Daily News
6:52 am | Wednesday, August 1st, 2012
Guess what’s on top of Jenson Button’s gastronomic list when he arrived in Cebu last night? It’s Cebu’s famous inasal or roasted pig, no less.
The Formula One 2009 World Champion tweeted last night that he is contemplating on tasting Cebu’s famous dish with a tinge of reservation of course.
The McLaren-Mercedes driver arrived with Japanese model girlfriend Jessica Michibata for the Aug. 5 Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Cebu.
Button, who does triathlon as part of his cross training, will be competing in the age-group categories in Cebu’s inaugural hosting of the tough sporting spectacle event.
Michibata, on the other hand, will be doing a relay alongside Sportswriters Association of Cebu president John Pages and Cebu 5th district Rep. Red Durano.
Button tweeted that he decided to have a taste of the crispy lechon because he is not sure if fish and chips are available here. He also said that he expects some tough competition on Sunday’s Half Ironman.

Junx August 2nd, 2012, 05:06 AM Cebu City policeman named country’s best junior officer
By Chito O. Aragon
Cebu Daily News
7:49 am | Thursday, August 2nd, 2012
It will be his first time as a policeman to set foot in Camp Crame.
PO3 Elrich Jourdin Catacutan, 31, an operative of the Mobile Patrol Group, will visit the police national headquarters in Quezon City on Aug. 6 to receive his award as the country’s junior police non-commissioned officer of the year.
Catacutan, a licensed criminologist who joined the police force in 2007, will receive the same award won last year by Chief Insp. Romeo Santander, chief of the City Intelligence Branch.
Catacutan, whose father and younger brother are also policemen in Cebu City, said the award brings pride not only to his family but the entire Cebu City police force.
Catacutan was recognized for his role in foiling the robbery of an armored van at Robinsons Place in Cebu City in September last year.
Catacutan and fellow policemen PO1 Roy Ceniza and PO1 Ernesto Silva were driving by the mall on their way to the Capitol when they heard shots fired. A robbery was in progress. The policemen engaged robbers in a shootout. About P1.2 million intercepted from the delivery of an armored van of China Bank was recovered.
Catacutan was shot in the chest.Ceniza was wounded in the knee. It was Catacutan who shot and wounded Junjun Cabando, the alleged leader of the robbery group. Three cohorts were killed in the shootout.

Junx August 2nd, 2012, 05:11 AM 30 Yokohama businessmen explore opportunities in Cebu
By Aileen Garcia-Yap
Cebu Daily News
7:43 am | Thursday, August 2nd, 2012
More than 30 businessmen from Yokohama City in Japan met with Cebu counterparts yesterday in a business matching session held at Hotel Elizabeth in Cebu City.
Norihiko Nomura, director general of the Office of Co-Governance and Creation of the Yokohama Policy Bureau, said that they are willing to partner with local businessmen especially in sustainable urban development.
“We have technologies on wastewater treatment, solid waste management, transportation management and more. We hope to get a lot of collaboration emerging from today,” said Nomura.
Yokohama City, home to 3.7 million people, is experiencing economic growth especially in the industrial sector.
Nomura said Yokohama used to experience similar problems in wastewater, drainage and pollution, which the city solved by using new technology.
Nomura said these are areas Yokohama can work with closely with Cebu businessmen under the sister city agreement with the Cebu City government and Yokohama City.
Cebu business leaders welcomed the delegates and were happy to receive a large group of businessmen come down to Cebu to check what they could offer.
Prudencio Gesta, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, said there were a lot of opportunities for Japanese to invest in Cebu. He said they came at the right time when Cebu was experiencing phenomenal economic growth.
“We will need more sustainable developments in Cebu. You came at the best time,” said Gesta.
Gordon Alan Joseph, Cebu Business Club president, agreed and encouraged all businessmen both Japanese and Cebuano to be friends and do business together.
Philip N. Tan, Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, asked the group to look into the potential of Mandaue City, which is strategically located between Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City.
He said Mandaue is ready to launch its new investment code this month.
The Yokohama Business group arrived in Cebu last Sunday and visited various companies and toured major cities in Cebu looking for opportunities to do business.
Companies include consultancy, metal manufacturers, automobile, telecommunications, engineering, green energy and waste water management, among others.
These include representatives from NTT Docomo, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd, Nippon Steel Corp., and Green Asia Engineering Corp.

Cebu Daily News
7:41 am | Thursday, August 2nd, 2012
BY year’s end, there will be 30 7-Eleven stores in strategic locations in Cebu including 15 stores in selected Caltex Gasoline Stations.
Jose Victor P. Paterno, Philippines Seven Corp. president and chief executive officer, mentioned the firm’s expansion target for the year during last Tuesday’s grand launching of the 7-Eleven brand in Cebu.
In three years there will be a total of 100 convenience stores in Cebu with an investment of at least P5 million per store, said Paterno.
“Our bullish expansion in Cebu, which is the first outside of Luzon, is banking on the growth of the outsourcing sector and the vibrant retail industry,”he said.

AIR NIUGINI, the regional and national airline of Papua New Guinea (PNG), flew to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) for its inaugural direct flight from Port Moresby to Cebu last July 16.

Drainage, wastewater, solid waste management, traffic management, affordable housing, environmental preservation are just a few things that Cebu needs to have a plan and framework for ideally before all the construction boom began.

CEBU CITY -- 7-Eleven licensee Philippine Seven Corp. (PSC) held grand launching ceremonies here to mark its foray outside Luzon as it moves closer to its target to open a thousand stores in the Philippines by 2013. As of this week, seven stores have opened in Cebu. The target is to open 30 stores in Cebu this year and increase the number of outlets to 100 by 2015, said Philippine Seven President Victor P. Paterno. “We feel it is time that a global city like Cebu had a global convenience store like 7-Eleven. We should have been here sooner but it’s only recently that we felt that Cebu can already support the critical mass of stores that we need and that number is 100 stores,” Mr. Paterno said on Tuesday. He said the company has invested in a warehouse in Cebu that will have to serve no fewer than 50 outlets to be profitable. The warehouse will also pave for the opening of 7-Eleven stores in Bohol, Negros and Iloilo. Yen Sen Yang, senior vice-president of President Chain Store Corp. (PCSC), said they are looking at a total of 1,000 7-Eleven stores in the Philippines by 2013. PCSC, which operates all 4,800 7-Eleven outlets in Taiwan, holds 56% equity in Philippine Seven.

Sleepwalker August 3rd, 2012, 07:32 AM Old news, pero nindot ni kay bantayan gud tawon ang bag-ong gihan-ay nga sidewalk:
Parking on paved sidewalks banned (http://cdn.ph/news_details.php?id=13732) 6/5/2012
Parking on newly paved sidewalks along Osmeña Boulevard is prohibited to avoid damaging new red bricks laid there, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said yesterday.
The mayor ordered the City Traffic Management Office (Citom) to tow away vehicles on the site.
He also told the city police to patrol the entire stretch of Osmeña Blvd. to prevent vandals from futher damaging the new lampposts.
The Beautiful Cebu Movement, which raised millions in donations to revitalize the sidewalks of the boulevard, has complained that P10,000 lampposts were missing or damaged even before they could be formally lighted.
The mayor asked barangay captains to help protect the ed sidewalks and lampposts to encourage the Beautiful Cebu Movement to extend their beautification efforts to other city streets.
Rama asked the movement to also help beautify B. Rodriguez St., Mango Avenue, Escario St., Gorordo Avenue and Salinas Drive among others.
Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung, chairperson of the Beautiful Cebu Movement Foundation, and some members inspected Osmeña Boulevard last Saturday morning.
Yeung said they completed 72 percent of the revitalization works and hope to finish the whole project in a month.
Lighting of the 175 lampposts installed along the newly paved sidewalks would follow.
She said they wanted visitors coming to Cebu City to attend the thanksgiving Mass for the canonization of Blessed Pedro Calungsod to see a beautiful city.
Yeung and other members of the movement were dismayed to find out during the inspection that a lamppost installed near the Police Regional Office 7 was missing while other nearby lampposts were vandalized and the glass casings were broken.
They also saw some vehicles parked on the newly paved sidewalks that damaged the red bricks.
Senior Supt. Ramon Melvin Buenafe, Cebu City police chief, said one “missing” lamppost was kept in the Citom engineering department as evidence of a vehicular accident.

Yes i understand that...Im with you that nakacontribute jud sa baha ang pagkaputol sa mga kahoy diha due to the construction of their mansions.
IMHO, Its another story man gud when you said that " kanang mga balay sad ang hinungdan nganong sige sang baha "
than when you say it like this way... " usa sad ning mga balaya sa hinungdan nganong sige sang baha"

Re: Ayala viewed from the terraces. Mura nalukop na gyud ang panorama from the terraces nga vantage point. IMO, ang ako ganahan pod ato is naay gaps, kay aron dili kaayo claustrophobic ang dating. I mean, the sense of openness and the vistas made it really nice to stand there kay layo maabtan imo pananaw. Then nitubo ang Insular Life, natabunan ang view sa IT Park and the Waterfront (I also loved this distant view of the minaret-topped building with the distant mountains), then naa na pod karon ang AppleOne (pero dili man nuon kaayo bantang kay naa sa may kilid). Mura mas nindot to nga naay depth variations ba..naa kay makita nga buildings sa layo pod, ug sa duol.

2 fires in Cebu City damage school, destroy 50 homes
By Jhunnex Napallacan | 11:11 am | Friday, August 3rd, 2012
CEBU CITY, Philippines—Two fires struck in Cebu City in a span of four hours Thursday, destroying several classrooms at a public school and about 50 houses in a residential area.
The first fire broke out at 10:43 p.m., destroying a new canteen that had yet to begin operations and at least eight classrooms in an old Gabaldon-style, mostly wooden building at the Cebu City Central School at the corner of Osmeña Boulevard and P. Del Rosario Street, according to fire investigator F03 Lowel Opolentisima. Eight other classrooms were damaged.

Cebu City Central School at the junction of Osmeña Blvd. and P. del Rosario St. is the city’s oldest public school. It was built by the Americans during their occupation of the Philippines in the mid-20th century when they introduced the public school system to the country. Late last night, its Gabaldon-style building, one of the oldest structures in the school complex which is still partly wooden, was gutted by fire. Eight classrooms were destroyed while another eight were damaged. Fire investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze. The fire only worsens the school’s problem with the lack of classrooms. Cebu City Central School, with a population of 5,000 students, is one of Cebu’s biggest and most populous. Each classroom holds about 50 students.

Junx August 3rd, 2012, 07:50 PM Binisaya film festival to kick off with campus tours in Davao, Cebu

LOCAL filmmakers will be holding a film festival dubbed as “Binisaya Film Festival” or “Binisaya.”
“Binisaya” is a film exhibition of new Cebuano films.
The first “Binisaya” exhibition was held on Oct. 30, 2009 at Turtle’s Nest, featuring “Uwan init pista sa langit,” “Mga damgo” and “Yawyaw.”
It was then followed on Dec. 2 and 3, 2011 at the University of San Carlos College of Fine Arts and Architecture Theater, featuring “Biyernes Biyernes,” (One Day, One City, Seven Stories) a full-length film made through the collaborative efforts of seven local filmmakers.
“Biyernes Biyernes” was also featured in British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) Fast Track and was shown at the Yerba Buena screening room in San Francisco, California last June 10.
And now comes the third “Binisaya Film Festival 2012” from Oct. 5 to Oct. 7, with guests from Manila and Davao.
“Binisaya 2012” will start with a campus tour dubbed “Lakbay Binisaya 2012” in Ateneo de Davao on Aug. 13 and 14 upon the invitation of Ateneo Film Circle and Studiobugsy. From Davao, “Lakbay” will visit Cebu’s colleges and universities.
Meanwhile, the festival is accepting entries for the “Cinemarehiyon: Cinema in the regions.”
Entries may be short films, documentaries, animation and music videos.
Students and non-students from the Visayas and Mindanao are welcome to submit entries done from January 2011 to present. Entries must be in Bisaya (except for music video).
The entries with dialogues in Cebuano and English subtitles will focus on Cebuano life, culture and experience.
The winners will represent Cebu in the forthcoming Cinemarehiyon 2012.
“Binisaya 2012” is partly funded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Part of the proceeds of the festival will go to the HIV/AIDS prevention activities of Bisdak Pride Inc., and for the training of indie film makers in Cebu through the Binisaya Movement.
The three-day event on Oct. 5-7 will showcase short films, narrative, documentaries and music videos from participating universities and colleges in Cebu.

Ballplayer August 3rd, 2012, 08:14 PM niagi ko sa SRP ganina ba, sa may mambaling entrance naa lagi naka suwat na "this way to cebu city ballpark".. anybody knows what that is?
edit: quick google yielded this: http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/sports/2012/03/19/cebu-city-mayor-rama-approves-building-field-batted-sports-boost-ccsc-program
wala man gud tarong venue ang baseball/softball diri sa Cebu. most of the time i-held ang games either sa labangon elem school or sa aboitiz sports field. unlike sa soccer nga nana jud foothold sa Cebu, wala pa kaayo ang baseball/softball, although that is changing.
Nisugot si Mayor Rama nga anha usa temporarily sa SRP ang ball park. it's really not much but better than nothing:)
Ballplayer August 3rd, 2012, 08:22 PM I really love the architecture of this church

EdithB August 4th, 2012, 02:10 AM nindot ang picture pero bati kaayo tan-awo nang mga balay dinha sa bukid kay basin mahimo na siya ug favela like in brazil. maayo unta i maintain ang ka green sa atong bukid kay man nindot siya as backdrop.
Sakto gyod. Kung dili nila iregulate ang density and open space requirements dinha sa bukid it will end up looking like a favela. Just look at some of the mountains in Baguio. Sorry folks from Baguio.
With regards to flooding, mao bitaw kinahanglan naay Drainage Plan ang siyudad aron dili na mahitabo nga lunopan ang ubos anang mga balaya. Usahay reactive ra kaayo ang LGU's. Mostly god mag-build usa unya if something comes up, anha pa mo action.
