Cebu drew P17.2-B investments in 2005

CEBU CITY — Cebu drew R17.2-billion investments for the whole year of 2005, a report prepared by the Cebu office of the Board of Investments (BoI) showed.

Cebu got the bulk of the Central Visayas investments aggregating R17.698 billion, which was R2.912 billion more than the investments registered with BoI in 2004

The BoI report showed that the biggest investment in Cebu is a joint venture power generation project of Kepco and Salcon Power Corp. which costs R15.206 billion.

Three projects involved the construction of hotels, with total investment of over P1.5 billion.

Five Power Ventures Development Corp. plans to invest R402.143 million in its Cebu Parklane International Hotel, while the Asia Pacific Top Management International Resources Corp. will invest almost R400 million in the major renovation of the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel.

Goldland Inc. also re-registered its R736.16-million investment in the Cebu Hilton Resort and Spa to avail itself of the BoI incentives.

The other BOI-registered investments located in Cebu included the P10-million semi-refined Noni juice facility (Cebu Noni Inc.), manufacturer of fashion accessories (FCQ Worldwide Inc.), P76-million mass housing project of 8990 Housing Basic Corp. and several investments in the information and communications technology sector (Interweb Media Connections, Clikstream Marketing Inc. and International Academy for Film and Television Inc.).

Three furniture companies (Dedon Manufacturing Inc., Sak’s Interiors Inc. and Mehitable Inc.) also invested a total of over R140 million for the expansion of their facilities.

Only two registered investments were located outside Cebu.

These are the R10.9-million medical transcription facility in Negros Oriental, and a R481.751-million palm oil company in Bohol.

Some developments this week:

1.) A very big W-E-L-C-O-M-E sign (individually spelled and made of wrought iron) has been put up at the center island across Metrobank in Fuente Osmeña. I don't have any idea what this is for.

2.) City Hall has been fenced already. Renovation of this landmark will probably start on Monday.

Nope bai, it's an individually spelled WELCOME sign made of iron. It's the type of sign that is going to be overgrown with a plant (bougeanvilla perhaps or any) to make the word more visible. It's in the center island between the skywalk and the Lions Club Clock Tower in Fuente Osmeña.

Sayang, I can't use my digicam now coz I lost my SD Card

Destination: CEBU

While the boom sort of slowed down after 1997, Cebu remains an attractive investment proposition. The clincher – business-friendly economic zones and first-class infrastructure facilities

For starters, here’s Cebu’s economic activity by some indicators. Export receipts: nine percent of the Philippines’ total. Exports growth rate in the past five years: close to 20 percent. Monthly production output of cameras (mostly digital) at the Pentax facility inside Mactan Export Processing Zone: 300,000. Number of weekly commercial flights at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport: 525. Daily passenger traffic at the airport: 6,500.

Estimated number of people who attended the 2004 Sinulog festival (see separate article in the Lifestyle section): one million.

heres another one, i wonder what happened to this proposal, it said construction will start at the first quarter of 2006, but the first quarter ended last march. were at the start of the second quarter but no signs whatsoever of any warehouse construction near cebu business park.

PriceSmart firm spending P350-400M to put up Cebu store

THE new Philippine operator of the PriceSmart membership shopping stores is investing P350-P400 million to put up a warehouse store in Cebu City, said its chairman, William Go.

Go, chairman of PSMT Philippines Inc., said the store would be the fifth PriceSmart warehouse in the Philippines and the first outside Metro Manila.

"We have secured a 25-year lease of a 2.3-hectare property in Cebu City near the Ayala Center" central business district, he said.

Construction is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2006 and the store is expected to be operational by the third quarter, he said.

Go said PSMT, which is expected to report a net loss of about P400 million in the year ending Aug. 31, had no plans of taking debt for the Cebu project. He said financing would come from internal funds of the firm E-Class, which now owns 90 percent of PSMT.

Ten percent of the company remains with First Metro Investment Inc., the investment arm of Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co.

PSMT operates four warehouse clubs in the country: in the Fort Bonifacio Global City near the Makati business district, Quezon City, Alabang town, and the Manila Bay reclamation area in Parañaque City

SM isn't the sure winner yet. who knows, the malaysian bidder may end up the winner, then it could be a different kind of a commercial development from the usual sm complexes.

regarding that pricesmart location, couldn't it be that big vacant lot beside the ayala access road and across the seminary in mabolo?

Ummm, that's very possible bai. The one beside Carmelite Monastery? As of now, the lot is being used as standby area for heavy equipments like cranes, trucks, etc..etc..

It's alright if SM will not win the bid. At least, no more of those shoebox type buildings. Constructing a commerial building there like a mall will surely complement with AsiaTown IT Park, Waterfront Hotel, and the entire strip of Apas, Lahug itself. It's fast becoming a tourist belt.

Yup sinjin, it's really a way to decongest supermarkets. The new Rustans Supermarket in Banawa will also open soon..

it is pricey, really! a commodity is considered expensive when it gets significantly higher than its average price. compare it to the supermarkets (even the classier ones) the prices differ so much. that makes it pricey.

in other countries, prices of goods from supermarkets and convenience stores don't differ that much, some even negligibly. and to think the only apparent differences between supermarkets and convenience stores are the latter only closes when it becomes bankrupt and many folds smaller. hehehehe.

You're right bai..

Anyway, are you familiar with Brgy. Guadalupe bai? There's already a Foodarama here. It's just near the old Acropolis Hotel (across of which was the Metropolis Hotel and now Crown Regency Suites). Daghan na kaayo ug developments..

Soon to open in Banawa is Rustans. In Labangon (Marvin's turf), there's a Tita Gwapa. Further down south, there are lots of supermarkets already.

Ei, by the way, in case SSC-Cebu Forumers don't know yet, JOLLIBEE will open another branch just across McDonalds in Jones Avenue. It would be beside Central Perk (Da Vinci Pizza). If there's no street there (Elizabeth Pond), they would literally just be beside each other. This is the first time I've seen such a neck-to-neck competition (except in malls of course).

Mandaue City will play host to a once-in-a-while basketball treat when former National Basketball Association (NBA) stars, led by rebound demon Dennis Rodman, engage players from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in an exhibition game on April 27

Davide is Ambassador to the United Nations
12th, 2006 by jorge

Cebuano great retired Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. was appointed new ambassador to the United Nations in New York. His appointment, however, from the President still needs confirmation from the Commission on Appointments to make it legally official which sees no hindrance.

The Commission on Appointments is made up of 13 senators with the Senate President, currently Franklin Drilon, automatically becoming the CA chairman and 12 members of the House.

Davide’s appointment was signed on March 24 by President Arroyo.

Davide will become the permanent representative of the Republic of the Philippines to the (UN) in New York, with the salary and emoluments of Chief of Mission, Class I. He will replace Lauro L. Baja Jr., the current ambassador.

His nomination is, again, an affirmation of his integrity as a statesman of high moral standards that flow through the veins of Cebuano race.

Vietnam posing competitive threat to RP: CIPC officer

AFTER CHINA, the biggest competition for the country is Vietnam, an official of the Cebu Investments Promotion Center (CIPC) said.

“Vietnam is now the flavor of the month because they are like China. They move very fast and they don’t have politics. Their governments have control and create no delay and that’s what investors want,” CIPC director Joel Mari Yu said in an interview.

He noted that 90 percent of all foreign investments in manufacturing that come to Asia are in China.

“There is little business confidence now in the country with the current administration compared to the time of former president Fidel Ramos,” he said.

Other countries, like Vietnam, are also moving fast, which creates another threat for the country, he told Sun.Star Cebu.

The country’s exports are also facing challenges.

The Private Enterprise Accelerated Resource Linkages 2’s State of the Sector Report on Philippine Furniture 2005 pointed that the country’s local furniture exports have not performed well in the past few years compared to its competitors in Asia. The Philippines is now even behind Vietnam in terms of supplying furniture to US-based buyers, it added.

However, Yuen Thai Philippines Inc. (YTPI) chairman Raymond Tan said he is confident that with the country’s skilled human resources, the Philippines can be as competitive as Vietnam, Indonesia and India.

YTPI is a China-based manufacturer and supplier of branded sports wear that launched its first offshore venture at the Mactan Economic Zone last month.

In a presentation, Tunde Fafunwa, Bayan Telecommunications Inc. chief senior consultant for business operations, said Cebu is important to the country’s economy.

Advantages

Cebu exports accounted for $4.7 billion, or 10 percent of the country’s total exports last year. Most of these come from manufactured items and services, he said.

Fifty percent of the three hundred foreign direct investors are Japanese, he said.

“Minimum wage in Cebu is 46 percent less than Metro Manila...and rental of condos and executive houses is also 20 to 50 percent cheaper than Metro Manila,” he said.

Business and politics in Cebu move forward peacefully and constructively, he added.

“You’re (Cebuanos) a model in marketing the island to the world amidst challenges on image, governance and perception about the Philippines as most of us know Manila,” he said. (ALC)

Assuming, the yearly growth rate is 5 percent and the Vietnamese is 7 percent would be fixed. Now, calculate, in how much time should the Philippines worry. And, IMHO, I'm always hurt when we always have to compare and we sometimes become regionalist saying we should separate the Philippines.I'm really saddened.

I used to visit Vietnam thread also, just to have an idea on how fast their economy is growing measured by their under construction projects. What I'm impressed is their u/c 140 meter width highway. They really plan ahead not like DPWH, building a 2 lane flyover from a four lane road in Cebu that in a matter of years will become a bottleneck like the one in Talisay and Mandaue.

More flights seen to push Cebu's tourism advantage
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 04/18/2006

The opening of more transportation access from Cebu to the different provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao, is pushing the tourism advantage of Cebu and strengthening the "hub and spokes" strategy that has been advocated by tourism players here.

Department of Tourism (DoT-7) regional director Patria Aurora Roa said there will be three air transportation flights that will be opened in Cebu that will provide more access for travelers from Cebu going to Dumaguete, Tacloban, and Tagbilaran (Bohol).

Roa said a budget airline, Orient Airways will soon open these routes that will give more advantage to Cebu's tourism, and will push the hub and spokes" strategy that will make Cebu as the gateway.

Roa said Cebu needs more air transportation access to different provinces in the Visayas, as well as Mindanao, in order to provide tourists an easy way to get to the attractive destinations. This will also benefit travel operators to make sound travel packages showcasing other attractions in different provinces.

Although, Cebu is also needing more international direct flights, Roa said domestic routes is also equally important in order to bridge the gap of easy access to the different provinces, making Cebu as the hub.

An insider source in the tourism industry said that one of the problems why international airlines are not interested to open up direct flights from Cebu to other countries, is the unresolved peace and order situation in the Philippines.

She said there is an international airline, which has seen the potential of opening a Cebu-Guam direct flight. However, the airline's officials are now hesitant to push the plan because of security issues.

Because of potential traffic in opening up Cebu-Honolulu (Hawaii) is also initially being considered by another international airline. However, the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States is warning this airline on the security disadvantages in opening up this route.

The source said that the American flag carriers are now more careful, because of the terrorist issue, and the Philippines' unimpressive security issues, coupled with the political instability are two of the negative contributors.

On the other hand, Roa said some international airlines which are already operating in Cebu is planning to increase their flight frequencies, like SilkAir, in its direct flight from Cebu to Singapore, and the Qatar Airways for its Cebu-Doha direct flight.

"But these are all in the planning stages, we hope these airline will push through with their plans," Roa said.

RP among world’s best dive sites
By Mayen Jaymalin
The Philippine Star 04/18/2006

Thailand, Hawaii and other South Pacific and Caribbean countries are known for their prime scuba sites — but they have nothing on the Philippines, which has officially earned the distinction of being among the world’s top three diving destinations.

Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) general manager Robert Barbers said the country was chosen as one of the top three dive sites in the world during the Dive and Travel Awards for 2006 held in Japan.

The best dive site award was a result of a survey conducted by the Marine Diving Fair (MDF), now considered to be Asia’s largest scuba diving and beach resort exhibition that annually attracts over 50,000 travelers.

"The Philippines was very fortunate to be given recognition and the honor to be named among the best dive sites in the world next to Maldives and Palau," Barbers said.

The Philippines swam past other locations with internationally known diving sites including Thailand, Hawaii and several South Pacific and Caribbean countries.

During the award ceremony, Barbers expressed optimism that with this new distinction, more foreign travelers will be encouraged to visit the Philippines and enjoy the many different dive sites around the country.

According to Barbers, the tourism market of the world’s diving industry is very big, thus tourism industry stakeholders must intensify efforts to develop dive resorts around the country in order to attract more tourists.

"We have more than 7,000 islands and exploring even a third of these as potential dive sites would surely be a welcome development in our tourism industry. Hopefully in the succeeding years the Philippines could be named as the best dive site in the world," Barbers said.

Among the top internationally recognized dive spots in the country are the Tubattaha Reef in the Sulu Sea; Malapascua in Cebu which offers the chance to glimpse rare treasure sharks; Balicasag island off Bohol; Anilao, Batangas; and Puerto Galera in Mindoro for its colorful corals, strong currents and big fishes.

Also well known among divers are Apo Island off Dumaguete and the surrounding islands of Palawan.

Chowking sees growing market in Cebu
Published: 17 April 2006

Chowking, the country's largest oriental quick-service restaurant chain, is looking at Cebu as an ideal market for a retail outlet expansion outside Metro Manila.

Raffy dela Rosa, president of Chowking Foods Corp., said Cebu's fast growing economy and tourism sector makes an attractive market for retail businesses.

"Cebu is now the fastest growing city in the country. Its growth rate is even bigger than Manila. Retail businesses like food and malls are doing very good here," dela Rosa said. more (http://www.inq7.net/globalnation/sec_cdn/2006/apr/ent/apr17_02.htm)

Governor vows to continue Naga reclamation project

NAGA Vice Mayor Valdemar Chiong took oath as the municipality’s mayor yesterday, as his brother, Mayor Ferdinand Chiong, was laid to rest.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, in paying tribute to the late mayor, said he “did his duty and thought nothing of it.” His town gave Garcia the biggest majority in the last elections, so he could have asked for the world or “at least a substantial portion of it” but he did not.

“Such was the man. Such were his principles. He refused to put a price on friendship, on family loyalty, on that dream that we both shared for this one great Province of Cebu,” said Garcia.

Because of this, the governor vowed to “rescue” the late mayor’s dream: the municipality’s reclamation project.

Ferdinand had worked hard so Naga will one day become a major passenger and cargo port in the southern part of Cebu.

“Today, as we lay him to rest, he leaves not just a void in our hearts- in his family whom he loved so dearly, the municipality that he made great, his friends to whom he showed what true friendship is. He also leaves behind his dreams,” said Garcia.

“(I will) see that it sees the light of day... Today I pledge that that port will become a reality. A symbol of your great dreams for the people you served so well and faithfully,” she added.

Chiong died of cancer last April 3. He left a wife and two children. His death shocked his friends and allies, who knew him to be athletic and in perfect health. It also left vacant the position of president of the Vice Mayors’ League Cebu Chapter because Valdemar is Vice Mayors’ League president.

Valdemar has been acting mayor since last March, when the late mayor filed a leave for his series of medical check-ups. (JPM)

Counter-terrorism experts to gather in Cebu conference

SIXTY foreign delegates and 190 local representatives will attend the first Counter-terrorism Experts’ Conference (CTEC) in Lapu-Lapu City this week.

A coordinating conference was held at the Cebu Provincial Police Office yesterday morning to discuss security arrangements for the three-day conference, which will be held at Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort beginning Thursday.

President Arroyo is expected to attend and give a keynote speech at the opening ceremonies.

Counter-terrorism practitioners, policymakers, civil society leaders and renowned scholars from around the world will be discussing topics at the conference while ambassadors and officials are invited to join.

Dilemmas

The conference aims to establish a process to institutionalize the study of terrorism to aid different countries in responding to the worldwide problem.

It will also tackle dilemmas in the US-led campaign and the root problems that foster extremism, according to chief organizer Benjamin Defensor, a former military chief of staff.

Defensor declined to name any dilemmas facing the war on terror or talk about the root causes, but noted that some countries lack “an anti-terrorist culture.”

President Arroyo, a staunch backer of the US-led campaign, announced during last year’s 21-nation Apec summit that her government would organize such a conference.

“Terrorism is a return to barbarism but countries differ in the way they want to deal with this scourge,” Defensor said. “We’re looking for an approach that’s acceptable to all—a middle ground.”

While countries have generally agreed to cooperate in fighting terrorists by sharing intelligence and staging joint counter-terrorism military exercises, Defensor said it would help if as many governments as possible could forge common steps against terrorism.

It would also help for governments to foster “an anti-terrorist culture,” which would make it second nature to people and law enforcers to remain vigilant against possible terrorist strikes during long lulls between spectacular attacks, he said.

The police are anticipating threat groups and criminal elements would take advantage and could plant car bombs or plan assassinations.

They also fear attacks on police stations and violent demonstrations that would be “detrimental to the national and bilateral interests between the Philippines and the concerned participating countries.”

Police are also preparing for militant and opposition groups to organize mass actions demanding the ouster of President Arroyo, “to embarrass the government.”

The CPPO will be getting support from the Cebu City Police Office, Regional Mobile Group, Central Command, Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 and other law enforcement units within the province to augment security of the hotels and the conference venue.

A total of 110 policemen will be scattered in these hotels while close-in security guards will be detailed with VIPs.

Covert

Covert policemen will be detailed in strategic areas while 10 crowd dispersal management (CDM) platoons will be on standby in case demonstrators threaten to disrupt the conference.

Two fire trucks will be on standby to help the CDM disperse crowds if needed.

A helicopter, two ambulances and two Special Weapons and Tactics teams from the CCPO and CPPO will be stationed in the area.

They have also prepared teams to conduct sea patrols in the waters surrounding Lapu-Lapu City and the two bridges connecting Lapu-Lapu to Mandaue City.

Motorcycle cops will escort VIPs to their destinations while K-9 dogs will be stationed in critical areas. (MEA/With AP)

^^ I doubt that. Our recent economic gains would most probably cover for our losses. And, our GDP is bigger.

Mehh.. get used to it. That's the today's reality, given that the political situation in so called "Imperial Manila" (blame those commies anyway). Kaya most of the people in Northern Luzon, Bicol Region, Visayas and Mindanao wanted to federalize our nation so they won't meddle "Imperial Manila" anymore.

I noticed that also. The reporter may have typed it wrong in a word document auto corrected to "treasure" or he may have referred it as a treasure for Cebuanos as it generates income from tourists. :hahaha:

The Thresher Shark of Malapascua Island
http://www.islandcruiseadventure.com/philippines/philippines5/thresher4.jpg
General Description

The name "Thresher Shark" is derived from the method it uses to seize its prey. The shark whips its tail on schools of fish stunning them and quickly returns to eat its catch. The whip tail is about equal to the total length of the shark thereby allowing it to be easily distinguished by shark fishers. Mature males grow to over 14 feet (half of that is tail). Though not known to attack man, two children were playing in the shallows on a British beach and were knocked over by a pair of Thresher sharks -- recorded as a shark attack but most likely the threshers were following a school of fish and the children accidentally got in their way since they were not injured. The Thresher has the ability to maintain a warmer inner body temperature than the surrounding water. more (http://www.boattalk.com/sharks/thresher.htm)

More call centers to open
in Cebu within the year
Published: 18 April 2006

by Irene R. Sino Cruz

More call centers are expected to start operations in Cebu within the year, Cebu Investment Promotion Center (CIPC) managing director Joel Mari Yu said.

According to Yu, business process outsourcing (BPOs) companies, such as call center firms, still continue to look at Cebu as a viable site for their operations.

He said that by the end of the year, a total of 20 call centers will be operating in Cebu, with three opening up before July 2006.

Lots of it really here in some parts of Cebu. But Malapascua is more renowned for it. When I went there I was even warned about it but most divers go there just to see it. It's also a part of its attraction. Even in the channel between Mactan and Olango Island, lots of it too. The more also in Tañon Straight (between Negros Oriental and Cebu Island) aside from the dolphins themselves.

Here's another photo of a thresher shark in Malapascua Island (googled pic):

Lexmark hasn't started yet bro. Same with Cebu Tower Palace although they have finished clearing the area already; their showroom is almost complete too.

Under construction now is:

- City Lights 3 and 4
- SM City Expansion
- Crown Regency
- Cebu Towers Commercial

- Parklane Hotel (almost complete, they're currently working with the interiors now)

With regards to Ayala expansion, the new Jeepney Terminal is already complete but hasn't been used yet because they still have to observe a 30-day curing period for the cement flooring before jeepneys will be allowed to use it. Probably, once the old jeepney terminal is cleared, then they can start with the expansion since the annex building will be at the site of the old Jeepney terminal itself.

Arcenas estate allots space for high-rise condo project
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 04/19/2006

http://64.78.14.153/arcenas/Images/Paseo7.jpg A section of the 20-hectare Arcenas Estate in Banawa will be allocated for high rise condominium and hotel developments to make it a fully integrated commercial, residential and business district in the southern part of Cebu.

Arcenas Group president Danny Arcenas said the company is willing to work with hotel developers or condominium developer investors to build hotel or high-rise condominium facilities in the area, which will soon be another landmark in the southern part of the city.

"Hotel developments, as well as high rise condominiums are congested in the northern part of Cebu, or in the uptown area, so far there is no hotel project being built in the southern part," Arcenas said.

"We are willing to work with any hotel or condominium investors. We have a very good location for these kinds of facilities in the 20-hectare estate," Arcenas said, referring to the uphill side of the property.

Currently, the company is spending about P200 million to develop an upscale commercial center within the 20-hectare Arcenas Estate called Paseo Center Cebu.

Arcenas said a hotel development is a viable project in this area, especially that Cebu is desperately needing more hotel rooms to accommodate the increasing number of visitors.

"It seems that the southern part of Cebu is taken for granted. Today, all developments, for commercial facilities are all going northward," said Arcenas.

As of this moment though, he said the focus of the company is to build the commercial center aspect, after that, the company may be able to focus on other project, or may be able to partner with interested condominium or hotel developers.

The 5,000 square-meter Paseo Center Cebu is the initial phase of the three-hectare commercial development of the Arcenas Estate. It is the first large commercial development to be introduced in the southern part of Cebu City that provides one-stop-shop facilities for dining, entertainment, banking and ATM, health and fitness, beauty and fashion, travel and tours, electronics and communications, hardware and appliances, among others.

The first phase of the commercial development will involve the creation of the neighborhood commercial center, where it will house well-known and branded coffee shops, pastry shops, fast food, pharmacy, bakeshop, among others.

The second phase will already include a development of a mini-mall that will have an anchor department store, RTW shops.

Construction of the Paseo Center Cebu will be completed this coming July. Hopefully by September of this year, tenants will be able to commercially open.
"We are the first upscale, mixed-used real property development in Cebu City South. We started to redefine 'southern comfort' with our first venture, Paseo San Ramon. Paseo San Ramon's reputation as a premier residential development has been proven time and again. Its reputation is our benchmark," Arcenas said.

ASEAN econ meet to precede summit

The Freeman 04/19/2006

Cebu City will have its hands full as the ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting will also be held here just three days prior to the much-anticipated ASEAN Summit in December.

Aside from at least 5,000 participants to the ASEAN Summit, Cebu City will also host 250 business leaders from all over the world who would participate in the ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said that the ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting will also be a three-day affair, the last day of which might crossover to the December 11 to 14 ASEAN Summit because the business leaders will be meeting their respective heads of states.

Coordination with the ASEAN Summit national organizing committee is in the works with regards to the accommodation of the 250 business leaders. Osmeña said they intend to rent 250 rooms of the newly built Parklane Hotel across the Cebu Business Park.

As of press time, only 100 rooms have been reserved in the still-unfinished hotel. The city government, however, is confident that the construction of the hotel will be completed and fully operational months before the two summits.

While the ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting will entail expenditures for the city government, Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he does not mind spending because the expenses would be capital purchases. The city also intends to spend P4 million to "re-power" two boats of the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation to augment security during the summit.

President Gloria Arroyo already declared the four-day ASEAN Summit a holiday. Osmeña, to ensure that people would clear the streets during the event, has offered a P100,000 financial assistance to other LGU units in the province to support "balik-probinsiya" programs.

Seventeen heads of state are expected to gather in Cebu to participate in the summit and Osmeña believes a terrorist attempt is highly probable, considering the assassination attempt on the late Pope John Paul II during his visit to Manila in 1995. - Joeberth M. Ocao

City to buy 60 cars for Asean summit

Cebu City Hall will spend about P28.5 million to buy 30 multicabs and 30 sports utility vehicles (SUVs) to beef up its transportation in the delivery of basic services and peace and order campaign.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said the City will have to buy multicabs now that no private firm is interested to lease 50 multicabs to the City Government.

He said the City is negotiating with Toyota and Isuzu and waiting for their separate price quotations for the City Government to buy 30 Crosswinds or Innovas.

The mayor will assign all 30 SUVs to the local police until December in time for the Asean Summit so it will have extra mobility. more (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/04/19/news/city.to.buy.60.cars.for.asean.summit.html)

In anticipation of an increasing demand for commercial spaces, especially for call center operations, Jovima Management and Development Corp. (Jovima) is constructing another building, which it calls IT (information technology) Center 3.
Jovima is the parent company of JY Square Discovery Mall and JY Square Supermarket.

Company manager Orly Vizcayda told Sun.Star Cebu that Jovima has applied for an “IT zone” accreditation for IT center 3, along with JY Square Supermarket, which it calls IT center 2, with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza).
Peza has already declared JY Square Discovery Mall or IT center 1, an IT zone.

there are articles about cebu published today in the philippine daily inquirer, summer na kasi eh. heres the link.

Cebu buys and bites.

THE last time I was in Cebu was for the Sinulog Festival. The place was bursting with activities: The major malls had a sale, and there were concerts and parties every single day. Sinulog dancing was everywhere—the streets, inside the malls, even restaurants.

The Place: The Queen City of the south--Cebu

How to get there: By air or sea. A sea trip from Manila to Cebu takes 18-22 hours. But that allows you to spend quality time with your companions, and could prove to be another adventure altogether.

bai, some facts about png, i think its official name answers your querry:
OFFICIAL NAME:
Independent State of Papua New Guinea

pero:

GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL CONDITIONS
Papua New Guinea, a constitutional monarchy, recognizes the Queen of England as head of state. She is represented by a Governor General who is elected by Parliament and who performs mainly ceremonial functions. Papua New Guinea has three levels of government--national, provincial, and local. There is a 109-member unicameral Parliament, whose members are elected every 5 years. The Parliament in turn elects the prime minister, who appoints his cabinet from members of his party or coalition.

Market local IT events in Japan - expert to CH

A Japanese information technology (IT) expert is urging the Cebu City Government to undertake its own efforts to promote the local software industry in Japan and other countries.

Atsuo Mizayaki, a veteran systems engineer with 37 years of experience in information systems at Hitachi Ltd., said this after observing that the Philippine government has been taking a “rather passive” stance in marketing the country’s IT activities in the Japanese market compared to the governments of China and India.

Effective

“If national marketing activity led by the National Government or the entire IT sector is difficult, an active appeal by local governments to the Japanese market may be effective,” he said.

He cited the efforts of the city of Dalian in China, where the Chinasoft Development Center is located. Chinasoft Development Center is the offshore partner of Chinasoft Tokyo, of which Mizayaki is president.

Mizayaki specifically mentioned Cebu City in his recommendations for the Philippine IT industry, which was published by the Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro).

“For example, Cebu City, which is very aggressive in IT industry promotion, can bring together the small and medium scale IT companies within the city or collaborate with other local governments or business conglomerates and create a software industry promotion strategy,” he said in the report.

Mizayaki, who also worked at the Center of the International Cooperation for Computerization as director for training and the Japan PKI Forum as chief researcher, stayed in the Philippines last year and visited 10 IT companies, which included Cebu-based software companies SPI Technologies Inc., Powerpro Software Solutions and Primary Software Development Corp.

High level

In general, the Japanese IT expert said, the technical skill level of software developers is high in the Philippines than those in China.

“While China (saw the establishment of) thousands of software companies in a very short period, the reality is that the quality of its engineers has deteriorated inversely proportional to the growth of the size of its IT industry,” Mizayaki said.

“It is possible that Japanese software houses, having failed in their offshore outsourcing to China, will take a fresh look at the Philippines as alternative destination for offshore software development,” he added.

Sun.Star Cebu was furnished a copy of the Jetro-published report. (JBN)
