as i know, one ride from EK was even featured in national geographic... if EK plays its cards right, it can possibly compete with disneyland HK... disney may have better facilities and more rides, but EK can have the advantage of more affordable rates and easier access... and if it could evn have its company publicly listed, heck i'll invest my money in it.

Malabo yata yan bro.. They said that they were eyeing that area there pero no definite period pa. Pero mas matutuloy yung proposal ni J.King na water theme park but I dunno where he will put this.

For me, based on that aerial above, a theme park seems out of place. The reclamation area would be better off for commercial and light industrial.
if EK can't put in SRP, i think they can put it in lilo-an.

Guilty din ako nito dati...when i first visited Cebu (2001), i stayed in Mandaue and i thought Mandaue was Cebu City itself! Like Tagum City and Island Garden City of Samal (Davao) sometimes tinatawag pa rin na Tagum, Davao City or Samal, Davao City ng iba.

Parang Manila....when i transferred there few years back, i thought Pasig was Manila, or Makati was Manila...yun pala its part of Metro Manila and Manila itself is another city within the Metropolitan Manila...tulad din ng Cebu...

That area between Danao and Liloan is perfect bai. :okay:

I think Robinsons will make a mall in that area. The area is quite big and is good for a mall development. If they will build a condo tower or office tower or a hotel tower, they will not buy the whole area since it would not require a bigger space. :) Im just hoping that it would be a mall, pero dugaya pa uy, after two years pa man sila modevelop sa maong area.

Robinsons will not build a mall here in Cebu but instead highrise condos and office buildings and they're targeting SRP... I've read this article about Robinsons pero 1 year ago na to...

Bakit ang pamagat ng daan na iyon ay "SUBWAY"? Does it lead to a proposed "subway" or train line? Or is there a road named "subway"?

North Reclamation lot
to be sold to Gokongwei
Published: 26 April 2006

by Doris C. Bongcac

The Cebu City government is selling a city-owned 4.6-hectare property at the North Reclamation Area to a prominent business family.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said the Gokongwei family was the only one that showed up during two public auctions organized by the city council’s bids and awards committee offering the lot, known as Block 10, for bidding.

“Now I think the road is clear that we sell the property to them in the amount that they bidded for,” Osmeña said.

The Gokongweis, owners of the Robinson’s chain of malls and supermarkets and the Universal Robina Food Corp., offered to buy the property at P12,500 per square meter.

Block 10, at 4.6 hectares, would cost P575 million.

Once sold, the lot would generate income for the city in the form of taxes, the mayor said.

City Administrator Francisco Fernandez said the city government has already submitted a letter to the Commission on Audit (COA) asking permission to dispose of the property.

The Local Government Code, Fernandez said, requires all local government units to always secure the approval of the COA when disposing government-owned real properties.

The letter, however, has not yet reached the COA head office in Manila, said Fernandez, who traveled to Manila on Monday to follow up the city’s request.

The letter was sent through the COA office in Central Visayas.

“We will be able to finalize the deal in maybe another month,” Osmeña said.
The mayor, however, expressed frustration at the COA’s processes.

“If we were a private company, we would have been able to complete it in two days,” the mayor said.

EXISTING STRUCTURES
The city currently has several facilities in Block 10: the City Engineering Office, Department of Public Services (DPS), Squatters Prevention Encroachment and Elimination Division (Speed), Mobile Patrol Group (MPG), and the city oil depot.

Osmeña said the Gokongweis have agreed to give the city government two years — starting from the time they pay the city — to vacate government offices now occupying Block 10.

Osmeña said he planned to transfer the affected city government facilities to a portion of the South Reclamation Project (SRP) facing the city's sanitary landfill in barangay Inayawan.

Osmeña said the area in the SRP that the facilities would be transferred to is unmarketable, and would not spell a loss of potential SRP profits.

I hope the Gokongweis will develop this property soon. Because their property in front of Chong Hua Hospital until now still a parking area and no mention when it will be developed.

ASEAN Summit Preparations:
MCIAA board prioritizes rehabilitation of airport
The Freeman 04/27/2006

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority board has decided to prioritize the rehabilitation of the airport and completion of different projects lined-up this year in preparation of the 12th Association for the holding of the Southeast Asian Nations Summit in Cebu this December.

Governor Gwen Garcia disclosed that the board supported the move of MCIA general manager Adelberto Yap to fast track the implementation of the project.

Garcia said Yap briefed members of the board the status of the projects, which include the rehabilitation of the runway, additional tubes, and paving with asphalt the roads leading to the airport.

Yap is also scheduled to brief members of the ASEAN Summit-Cebu Organizing Committee and the National Organizing Committee in a meeting that President Gloria Arroyo will also attend.

Governor Garcia said all committees are expected to submit their respected updates on the preparations for the Summit, while the contractor of the Cebu International Convention Center will also give its report on the status of the construction.

Last month, Capitol infrastructure consultant Apollo Enriquez informed members of the committee that the project contractor has not encountered any problem so far.

Assistant Secretary Phineas Alburo promised to report the status of his inventory of hotels and beach resorts in Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu cities where the more than 4,000 delegates will be accommodated.

Ambassador Marciano Paynor, Jr., chairman of the ASEAN Summit-Cebu Organizing Committee, is expected to brief President Arroyo the overall status of the preparations for the Summit. - Jose P. Sollano

Battle of Mactan marked today; President at rites
By MARS W. MOSQUEDA JR.

MACTAN, Cebu - President Arroyo is expected to witness today the reenactment of the historic "Battle of Mactan," the first organized Filipino resistance against foreign invaders on April 27, 1521, at the shores of this town.

Based on the schedule released by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) 7 yesterday afternoon, President Arroyo is expected to watch the reenactment of the fierce battle — dubbed "Kadaugan sa Mactan" — between Mactan Island chieftain Lapu-Lapu and Portuguese conquistador Ferdinand Magellan 485 years ago. Magellan died of wounds during the battle.

President Arroyo will be joined by Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano and local officials of Lapu-Lapu City and Barangay Mactan.

Portuguese Ambassador to the Philippines Jao Caetano da Silva is also expected to attend.

Actors Alfred Vargas and Ramon Christopher will play Lapu-Lapu and Magellan, respectively, while actress Criselda Volks will portray Lapu-Lapu’s wife, Bulakna.

Councilor Damian Gomez, chairman of the Lapu-Lapu City Tourism, Cultural, and Historical Affairs Commission, said that the city government has allocated R1.2 million for the celebration.

The private sector raised more than R400,000 while pledges from other government agencies also reached more than R400,000, he said.

Gomez said owners of beach resorts and hotels in Lapu-Lapu have expressed support by leading a food festival.

Mactan Barangay Captain Paz Radaza, wife of Mayor Arturo Radaza, said they tapped different sectors to assist them with the preparations for the affair, most especially with the scheduled visit of President Arroyo.

After witnessing the reenactment, President Arroyo will immediately proceed to the Naga-Toledo Junction in Naga, Cebu to inaugurate the R785-million Cebu South Road Improvement Project, covering more than 28 kilometers of road improvement.

The four-lane, 11-kilometer stretch from Talisay City to Naga was finally completed after a six-month delay, based on the report of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Jose Bustamante of the Project Monitoring Office of the DPWH said that the road, a component of the Cebu South Road Improvement Project (CSRIP), under Package 1, was declared as "substantially completed" last Dec. 10 after three deadline extensions.

Tj, diba Coffee Dream is based in Davao?

The Coffee Shop which closed down as what I've said previously was the one located in Fuente Osmeña which is now a Chowking.

Some coffee shops here:

1.) BOs
2.) Starbucks
3.) Bigbucks
4.) Venetian
5.) Coffee Dream
6.) Milk
..I forgot the others..

Of the six above, I'd say the best would be BOs... second would be Starbucks... Worst would be Milk and Bigbucks... Hehehe, my opinion...

you forgot gloria jean's coffee, which is also an international brand.

actually, it was glenn soco of coffee dream who brought the coffee drinking lifestyle in cebu among all others.

Cebu ‘grande dame’ back in business

BIZZFIZZ ABS-CBN Interactive
By RENE MARTEL

For almost two decades she was the grandest of grande dames, sitting regally atop a Cebu hill and representing the best in local hospitality. But a series of unfortunate circumstances which followed saw the stately lady loose some of her allure, and she stood forlorn and neglected for a few years.

But that was then, and this is now. After a much needed multimillion-dollar makeover, the erstwhile Cebu Plaza will Thursday open its doors once again for business as the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu and ready to regain its former glory.

For several months a sign outside the hotel has read: "Dress rehearsals. Watch this space." But the dry runs, intensive staff training, the sound of drilling and hammering and the hoardings around function spaces have all ceased to be.

When the hotel—set in 7.5 hectares of lush greenery—swings opens its doors Thursday with a lavish ceremony it will have 329 refurbished guest-rooms and suites. The grand ballroom, built with a permanent stage and 12 multifunction rooms represents approximately 2,400 square meters of function room space that can cater for 2,000 persons.

Cafe Marco, the Hong Kong-based Marco Polo Hotel Group’s signature restaurant, has been created to serve dishes within minutes through four "show kitchens" that showcase the preparation of a la carte and buffet dishes. The mango wood-fired oven at the Pool Bar will be a source of delight for Mediterranean food lovers.

Along with a business center, the hotel will offer broadband Internet access in all guest-rooms, cable television, a travel desk, car rental, airport transfers, secretarial services, local and national daily newspapers, a medical clinic, tennis courts and a fitness center.

Presiding over the Marco Polo Plaza as its opening general manager is seasoned Swiss hotelier Hans Hauri. A graduate of the Swiss Hotel Management School in Lausanne, Hauri has worked in Asia’s hospitality industry for 25 years, and is fluent in English, German and French.

He was general manager for numerous hotels in international chains such as The Hilton, The Peninsula, Shangri-La and Meritus. Prior to joining Marco Polo Hotels, Hauri was GM of JC Mandarin Shanghai, the flagship hotel of Meritus Hotels and Resorts.

Says Hauri: "What we have adds up to an elegant urban resort hotel. We are all very excited to start serving guests and extending hospitality that is distinctly Filipino."

Taking on the task of titillating the palates of its guests is Canadian-born Luke Gagnon who is Marco Polo Plaza’s executive chef. Joining the hotel industry shortly after obtaining his degree at George Brown College in Toronto, Gagnon has over the past 23 years since won numerous awards in food preparation, gastronomic competitions and ice sculpting.

Gagnon brings with him over two decades of culinary experience in prominent establishments such as The Four Seasons, Sutton Place, Westin Harbour Castle, Excelsior and Shangri-La. His enthusiasm is apparent as he establishes the Marco Polo Plaza Culinary Team philosophy: "Management through inspection, not by expectation."

He adds: "As a team we treat others with respect and dignity, and never jeopardize our team’s integrity."

So it’s all systems go for the re-entry to the skyline of this Cebu landmark. And Cebuanos will be glad to welcome back to the fold a hospitality crown jewel from the past, now ready to sparkle and dazzle its patrons once again.

Yup. Given that the number of tourists arrivals and as long as there are few hotels operating here in Cebu, the said city continues to experience hotel room shortages.

Plans for Malapascua to benefit resorts too
http://www.80days.com/albums/malapascua/10_G.jpg
If the development plan of Malapascua will be carried out, the island located in the Municipality of Daanbantayan will be the first “organized” tourism attraction in Cebu Province.

According to Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 Director Patria Aurora Roa, the development of Malapascua, one of the top 10 diving sites in the Philippines, includes the drafting and implementation of a zoning plan.

“(If carried out), there will be zoning in the island. Unlike here in Cebu and other areas, which do not have master plans (and) establishments are located anywhere. We would like to avoid that kind of scenario in Malapascua and other tourism sites,” she said in an interview on the sidelines of the Manila launch of the Cebu Business Month 2006 at the Hotel Intercontinental in Makati last Monday.

Of the top 10 diving destinations in the Philippines, four are located in Central Visayas, said Roa. These are: Malapascua and Moalboal in Cebu; Apo Island in Dauin, Oriental Negros; Balicasag Island in Bohol.

Demolition

The development plan of Malapascua Island involves the demolition of sea walls, ripraps, cottages and other structures that are inside a 30-meter easement, which is from the point reached by seawater during high tide up to 30 meters inland.

Roa said this should not discourage prospective investors from doing business in the island.

“The structures that will be demolished are those violating the law, which has been there since 2002. They will just have to follow the rules,” Roa said.

Earlier, resort owners complained against the municipality’s implementation of the 30-meter easement zone in the whole island. Several cottages of 22 resorts in Malapascua are found in the easement zone.

There are 48 resorts in Malapascua.

Task force

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, after witnessing the growing garbage problem in Malapascua, said she will also assign a task force to oversee the development of the island.

In a separate interview, Hong Kong-based businessman Carlos Yeung, who is married to Cebuano Mari-quita Salimbangon, earlier said he will develop his 30-hectare property in Malapascua into a resort.

“Cebu is booming, and the best industry in Cebu is tourism. Cebu has a lot of potential. Many people in Hong Kong want to come to Cebu (which) is already known to the world,” he said. (JBN)

City status for Naga, Carcar

The towns of Naga and Carcar in southern Cebu may be converted into cities before next year’s elections.

Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district) announced yesterday that the proposals may be taken up by the Senate when sessions resume next month or in July.

“We are hopeful,” he said, adding that there are 23 pending proposals for cityhood.

Gullas said the House of Representatives already approved the creation of the 23 cities during the 11th Congress, whose term ran from 1998 to 2001.

However, the proposals were set aside because of the impeachment trial of former president Joseph Estrada.
Gullas said the petitioners already appeared before the Sen. Alfredo Lim, chairman of the Senate committee on local government, so the proposals will be taken up.

Naga Mayor Valdemar Chiong said the town is “ready” for cityhood.

With an increase in the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA), Chiong hopes to bring more services to his constituents once Naga becomes a city.

The first-class municipality, he believes, has among the highest budgets among the towns in Cebu Province.

Naga operates on a P100-million annual budget, 55 percent of which go to basic services.

Carcar Mayor Patrick Barcenas said aside from an increase in IRA, becoming a city would bring in more residents to the town, resulting to an increase in revenues.

It would also result in an increase in real property values, bringing more income to Carcar.

However, Gullas said that although the law on the creation of cities was amended before the term of the 11th congress ended, he believes the 23 proposals, including Naga and Carcar, were already considered approved.

“The principal author hurried (Sen. Aquilino) Pimentel Jr. to regulate the creation of cities,” he said.

Pimentel succeeded in having the law amended that a town or a cluster of barangays need to have an average annual income of P100,000, excluding the IRA, before it could become a city.

The previous requirement was only at P20,000, including the IRA.

Gullas said Carcar and Naga would not qualify under the new requirement.

He revealed that when he became majority floor leader in the 11th Congress, he approved the conversion of 31 municipalities into cities under the old requirement.

“We became 115 (cities). (Pimentel told me) that it’s too much,” he said.

“What’s the problem? If they qualify, let’s make them into cities so that these municipalities will get a bonanza in the IRA. That’s why Talisay got a bonanza,” said Gullas, who was former Talisay City mayor.

Talisay’s cityhood in 2001 is being questioned by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, Gullas’ political foe.

If Carcar and Naga would become cities, their IRA would increase drastically.

Chiong said Naga has, at present, an IRA of about P50 to P60 million. Barcenas, for his part, said Carcar gets an IRA of P75 million annually.

Cities get an IRA share of about P180 million to P200 million, Gullas said.

Under the Local Government Code, a town has to have at least a P20 million average annual income for two consecutive years, and a population of 150,000 or land area of at least 100 square kilometers.

When you first start reading Spanish phrases. Look for words that you know in English, Tagalog, and Cebuano. It will help you learn and be able to understand.

Mao sa ni karon.

Animo, I self-studied Spanish during my high school years and augmented my Mexican friend. The tenses makes me crazy.

Some Spanish words pala:

morir - (v.) to die
morirá - (v.) he/she died
golpe - (n.) blow (thus the Tagalog loanword gulpi)
lanza - (n.) lance
rico - (adj.) rich
oro - (n.) gold
tripulación - (n.) crew (thus the Tagalog loanword tripulante)

@RichardFischer

I'll try but I cannot assure you. The North Reclamation Area was a project done decades ago and all of the lots there are privately owned already so I guess there's no recent or even old aerial pics for it to be promoted or what.

Here are some trivia about the North Reclamation Area. I got this from a newspaper article and I hope my memory is correct:

- The North Reclamation Area (NRA) was a project undertaken by a private Cebuano company headed by Sergio Osmeña Jr.

- The lots at the NRA was supposed to be "leased" only. Prospective locators were given a definite period of time as to when to construct their buildings.

- The NRA, also known before as Cebu Port Centre was supposed to become some sort of a neo-city. There would be provisions for a public park, a new public market, an area for commercial establishments, some theaters and restaurants, etc.

- During the Marcos years, the NRA was sequestered by the national government like what happened to ABS-CBN of the Lopezes and other related businesses. Sergio Osmeña Jr. was a political enemy of Marcos and was a symbol of the opposition in Cebu.

- The Public Estates Authority (PEA) was then created to manage the NRA. Before, there was no government agency that directly handled reclamation projects.

- The lots at the NRA were then sold to individuals whom Mayor Osmeña recently called as "having a distorted sense of investment" because instead of building a structure they just made the lots lie idle waiting for its value to appreciate. This is the reason why the NRA looks like a wasteland to some; in fact, some parts of it are slowly becoming an urban slum.

..It was because of this that Mayor Osmeña promised that whatever happened to the NRA will NEVER HAPPEN to the SRP. The city government now has been very careful with regards to the "potential locators" that want a piece of the SRP. The mayor further promised that the SRP will be teeming with economic activity just like any other special economic zones.

very acurate professional explanations, thank you very much arnoldsa !

Unicef to make Cebu City street kids program a model

CEBU CITY - An official of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) said the international agency wants to make Cebu City's program for street children and minor offenders as a model not only for other provinces but for other Asian countries as well.

Colin Davis, Unicef senior program officer, said they are impressed with the achievements of the Cebu City task Force on Street Children (CCTFSC), particularly its non-formal education and health services for street kids.

Davis said they also found remarkable the coordination between the Cebu City Government and a network of non-government organizations working together for the cause of children in the city.

He said he believes CCTFSC has a lot of successful projects that other local government units can learn from because of its 20 years of experience in taking care of out-of-school youth, street children, children in conflict with the law and abused children.

"They're all very good, very well established and very focused on their cause. It's about the only one I've seen that's gone a little step further to provide other services like Internet access to street children. It's this going an extra mile, going one step ahead of the others that makes them different and interesting,” Davis told reporters here on Thursday.

Davis specifically lauded the task force's barangay-based diversion program for minor offenders and the dynamic leadership in Cebu City in the area of programs for children.

Unicef and Canadian International Development Agency (Cida) officials were in Cebu to monitor the initial results of the implementation of the Sixth Country Program for Children (CPC 6).

Some components of the city's program for children receive an annual funding of close to P 9.3 million from the two agencies.

Lawyer Aleberto Muyot of the UNICEF’s children’s justice committee said local government units are not the only ones interested to learn from Cebu City's experience.

In the past three years, various government agencies and NGOs from Mongolia, Bhutan, Indonesia, Malaysia and China have been coming to Cebu and have been coordinating with Unicef to learn more about the programs of the task force and the Cebu City Government, he said.

"Most of the time, we do not just sell the program for children here as the Cebu City model. We're selling the ideas and the program as model for Unicef," Muyot said.

Ayala affiliates to implement more infra projects at mall, Asiatown IT

A series of expansion buildings and a lagoon will soon dot the landscape of Asiatown IT (Information Technology) Park.

This was revealed by Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) president Jose Rene D. Almendras during CHI’s annual stockholders’ mee-ting at the City Sports Club Cebu.

CHI subsidiary Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. (CPVDC), on the other hand, will start constructing “in a few weeks” annex buildings of the Ayala Center Cebu. The project is scheduled for completion in March 2007.

CPVDC will start building a lagoon at the IT Park by June or August next year. The project is projected to cost P870 million.

Retail spaces

The multi-level annex buildings, which Almen-dras described as a “series of retail spaces,” will house 50 various retail outlets based locally and internationally. At the first floor of the building would be Rustan’s Supermarket.

Although Almendras admitted that the buildings’ schematic diagram is hard to explain because it has yet to reach its final stage, he said that they “are making sure that the enhancement to the malls is very Cebuano.”

“It’s really a nice place to shop, to walk around in, to sit in and to just spend time in. You’ve never seen anything like it,” he said.

Nature

Since CPVDC would bring in a “nature component” to the buildings, shoppers can expect to hear birds chirping and water rushing while they shop.

The annex buildings will also feature an area where social events and functions can be held.

Strong demand promp-ted CPVDC to expand its retail business.

“For three years, people have been wanting to open new stores in the mall,” Almendras said.

He said there are pending applications of 111 merchant stores. By November, they can open their shops to the public, he added.

He predicted that the annex buildings would generate “very strong” sales grosses. “You’ll just have to look at our annual report,” he said.

Last 2005, CHI posted a 12-percent growth in its retail business with gross sales of P371.8 million, while CPVD revenues reached P50.3 million, up 14 percent over that in 2004. (UP Mass Comm Intern Arrah Camillia Quistadio)

Cebu has enough rooms for Asean summit guests

Both the national and local organizing committees of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit already decided on the theme and the logo for the event.

Also, the summit now has an official website, which will be officially launched with the logo in August.

The theme will be “One Caring and Sharing Community.” The logo, meanwhile, will be 10 sampaguita flowers on seven leaves. Each flower represents the 10 member nations of the Asean while the leaves stand for the seven participating nations.

The official website will be www.12aseansummit.gov.ph and this will also be launched on Aug. 8 along with the logo.

Hotel space

Also in yesterday’s meeting, organizers found that Cebu now has enough rooms for the guests.

Last month, during the meeting of the Cebu Organizing Committee, authorities still had problems on hotel rooms for the guests.

Ambassador Marciano Paynor, who presided over the meeting, had said he will be meeting with hotel managers and finance officers to let them commit more rooms for the Asean Summit.

“We can fully meet the requirements with some more to spare,” Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, the co-chairman of the National Organizing Committee, said after yesterday’s meeting.

The construction of the Cebu International Convention Center, which will be the venue of the summit, is two weeks ahead of schedule and Capitol is even expecting to increase its lead.

Garcia said that as co-chairman, she defined a rule during yesterday’s meeting. “As co-chair, I’m picking up my cue from the first syllable which is co. Meaning, we will coordinate, collaborate and cooperate.”

She also reiterated that Cebu will deliver, being the chosen venue for the historic event.

Proud host

“It is the Philippines that is the host of the summit and we are very proud and privileged to have been chosen as the venue. I said that as governor, I know that I speak for all Cebuanos. I say that we are grateful to the President for having chosen Cebu and this enormous vote of confidence will be repaid by us by delivering when needed, as needed,” she said. (MBG)

NBA Legends entertain
By Rommel C. Manlosa
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

Dennis Rodman, the star attraction of the all-star show, grabbed rebounds, dived for loose balls and stayed true to himself to the thrill of the 5,000 fans who witnessed the “Bad Boy Tour.”

The rest of the foreign visitors were just as impressive – and entertaining – as Rodman’s crew, collectively known as USA Basketball Legends, annihilated the SMC All-Stars, 124-94, Thursday night at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

Rodman and his fellow ex-National Basketball Association (NBA) stars did most of the entertainment part, while the rest of the team, players from the NBA Developmental League (NBADL) led by Olu Famutimi, did most of the scoring.

Dunks

Famutimi wowed the crowd with his display of slam-dunks, varying from a simple two-handed slam to acrobatic 360-degree dunks. He also got help from spitfire guard Kareem Reid and flashy Marion Allen.

Rodman scored only five points on a jumper, a ditsy-do and split free throws. However, he had 17 rebounds, an assist and a block to go with one turnover in 34 minutes of play.

Rodman’s intensity was on display in the first three quarters but he did not see action in the entire fourth quarter, where Famutimi and his NBADL buddies put on the finishing touches to the blow-out game.

At one point, Rodman dived for the loose ball and rammed into the press section under the court. The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Rodman slammed into Sun.Star Cebu’s Karlon Rama, ABS-CBN’s Naomi King and The Freeman’s Cyril Camporedondo.

Rama and Camporedondo were unhurt but King suffered a small cut on her left hand because of the collision.

Rodman did what he used to do in the NBA: during the halftime break, he took off his shoes not minding his white socks were soiled; he did stretching before plunging into action, and when he was on the bench, Rodman veiled his head with a white towel.

The other Legends

NBA Legends’ Alex English, an NBA scoring champion in the 1980s, seemed to have lost his touch despite scoring 11 points. Darryl Dawkins, famous for his rim-breaking dunks in the 70s and 80s, could no longer execute a dunk but was more effective clowning around and showcasing skills as a Harlem Globetrotter.

While former dynamo Calvin Murphy was finally slowed down by age. Otis Birdson and Sidney Moncrief opted to sit on the bench and call the shots for the team.

Against the aging NBA Legends, the SMC All-Star, made up of former Philippine Basketball Association stars, looked good, erecting a 20-10 edge on Allan Caidic’s two triples.

Fresh legs

When Moncrief infused fresh legs into his line-up, Famutimi, Allen, Collin Boddicker and Chad Wilkerson responded by quickly taking a 28-24 lead, 1:33 left in the opening quarter.

Caidic and Tony Boy Espinosa canned back-to-back triples as SMC regained the lead, 34-32, with 10:17 in the second before Rodman scored his first basket at the 10:01 mark and Famutimi made his first dunk at the 8:19 mark for a 36-34 lead.

The SMC All-Stars’ last taste of the lead was at the 6:47 mark when Peter Martin, Ato Agustin and Chris Bolado connived for a 40-36 edge. It was all Legends show from thereon as the Americans took the half, 67-51.

The SMC All-Stars also had their share of dunks courtesy of Peter Martin, who scored his first basket over Rodman. Martin, however, regretted having stuffed the ball.

“Nakakahiya na sundan (I fell embarrassed trying to imitate their dunks),” said Martin grinning. “I’d rather watch Famutimi do his stuff.”

Famutimi topped the game with 33 points, Allen added 25 and Reid scored 13. Caidic and Agustin topped the SMC All-Stars with 17 points each.

On Monday, the NBA Legends will play against a team from the PBA at the Araneta Coliseum.

USA Legends (124) – Famutimi 33, Allen 25, Reid 13, English 11, Boddicker 10, Rodman 5, Dawkins 5, Murphy 4. SMC All-Star (94) – Caidic 17, Agustin 17, Espinosa 7, Martin 6, Bolado 6, Pacheco 6, Magtulis 5, Jose 5, Sta. Maria 4, Jarencio 3, Loyzaga 2, Cordero 2. Quarters: 30-28; 67-51; 94-74; 124-94.

CHI, CPVDC incomes up due to tourism, IT

Ayala - affiliate Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) has attributed the positive growth of its subsidiary companies in Cebu to the growth of the province’s tourism and information and communications technology industries, among others.

During CHI’s annual stockholders’ meeting at the City Sports Club-Cebu yesterday, CHI president Jose Rene Almendras said CHI’s total net income last year increased to P117.3 million from P90.6 million in 2004.

Retail

CHI’s retail business, the Ayala Center Cebu, grew 12 percent with P371.8 million in gross income.

“A contributor to this growth was the success that Cebu achieved in tourism in 2005 as tourist arrivals grew by 21.3 percent.

Ayala Center Cebu became the shopping haven for both domestic and foreign tourists on top of its growing A, B and C+ target markets,” Almendras said.

The growth in Cebu tourism also brought in last year a significant share of the market for the Cebu City Marriott Hotel, which is 37 percent-owned by CHI. The hotel maintained an average occupancy rate of 86 percent.

Sales

With regard to CHI’s real estate development business, operations at the Cebu Business Park and the Asiatown IT (information technology) park registered combined sales of P109.5 million from commercial lots, representing a 12 percent growth compared to the year-ago level.

Leasing revenues contributed by CHI-subsidiary Cebu Property Ventures Development Corp. (CPVDC) reached P50.3 million in 2005, up 14 percent over the previous year’s results.

“This can be attributed to the vigor of BPOs (business process outsourcing), which spawned a significant area of additional office spaces at Asiatown,” Almendras said.

“As Cebu positions itself as a highly competitive destination for global IT locators, Asiatown IT park continues to secure its significant share of opportunities related to IT and IT-enabled services,” he added.

The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has identified tourism and ICT as Cebu’s sunrise industries, which will put the Province in the international map.

Almendras earlier told reporters that these industries are “the lights after the tunnel.”

CHI to invest over P1.0B
for Ayala mall expansion
Published: 29 April 2006

by Irene R. Sino Cruz

CEBU Holdings Inc. (CHI) will be investing over P1 billion for the expansion of the Ayala Center Cebu, company president Jose Rene Almendras said.

The expansion is in two stages, the expansion building that will house Rustan's Supermarket and the lagoon area development, Almendras said.

"CHI will strengthen its retail rental portfolio by 17 percent or an additional 13,500 sq.m. of space at Ayala Center Cebu," he said during the annual stockholders' meeting held yesterday morning at the City Sports Club.

The lagoon development alone will cost P870 million while the expansion building at the former passenger jeepney terminal will cost over P200 million, he added.

The expansion building will have two basements and three levels, with Rustan's Supermarket occupying the ground floor, according to Cebu Holdings operations officer Celeste Bernardine Dy.

According to Dy, the other two floors will be occupied by retail firms. "We're looking at around 50 additional merchants."

The expansion building, which will be connected to the main building, will have a total space of 7,000 sq.m., with 2,000 square meters alloted to Rustan's Supermarket.

On the other hand, the lagoon area development will comprise a number of multi-level buildings that would carry a novel concept, Almendras said.
"You've never seen anything like it. It's not a mall anymore. It's a lifestyle. You can shop, walk around, sit in, spend some time in it. You will be closer to nature. You can sit down, hear water coming through and birds chirping. There will be an open area," he added.

The lagoon development will also include a good venue for events, such as concerts, that could accommodate quite a good number of people, Almendras said.

The construction of the expansion building will start in a few weeks and Rustan's will be operational before the end of the year, he said.

Almendras said the expansion building will be fully occupied by the time it is open since there are 111 pending applications for mall spaces. "They have been waiting for three years," he said.

He noted that the demand for commercial spaces - from Manila-based, local and international retail firms - has been going up.

"The demand is strong. Our retail is very strong. The growth is fantastic. I think the merchants in the mall are happy. Sales growth is very strong," Almendras said.

He noted that the Ayala Center Cebu's gross revenues have reached P371.8 million.

"We are making sure the enhancement to the mall is very Cebuano. There's a place for the tourist, a place for family. It's along those lines," Almendras pointed out.

CHI's net income in 2005 grew to P117.3 million, up by 30 percent from the previous year's P90.6 million, he said.

The company's gross revenues rose to P690.2 million. Aside from the P109.5 million contribution from the mall, the company also earned P109.5 million from the lot sales in Cebu Business Park and subsidiary Cebu Property Ventures Development Corp. and P50.3 million from eOffice rentals.
Amara, the company's seaside residential project, also registered P189.7 million in gross sales.

He noted that the overseas Filipino workers market accounted for 27 percent of Amara sales.
Almendras told stockholders that the price per share has more than doubled from 0.98 centavos in the first quarter of 2005 to the present P2.

He added that the price per share has increased by more than 500 percent over the 0.38 centavos in the first quarter of 2001.

The expansion in a "few weeks" finally. :)

I hope they can also build a second Ayala mall at the SRP as what they previously planned.. :)

The expansion would now bring the total floor area of the mall to over 120,000 sq.meters.

Nice photos of some of the commercial establishments here Marvin. I really like the architecture of all those buildings! Very pleasing to the eyes.

Judging from those pics, SM City and Ayala Center are really, no doubt, the biggest malls outside the capital.

I also like the architecture of this JY Square Mall, very western!

Editor's Note: Published on page A12 of the April 25, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

FOUR years of foot-dragging by Cebu City bureaucrats are causing an Ayala-led multinational consortium to consider junking investments for water in the country’s most parched metropolis.

Button-down Ayala Corp. is usually bland. But in the latest discussions between the decrepit Metro Cebu Water District (MWCD) and Ayala and Stateland Inc., it candidly states: “Potential co-investors… might withdraw from the project.”

Submitted in 2002, the Joint Venture Consortium proposal would funnel 50,000 cubic meters of water daily from Carmen to the city, a distance of 39 kilometers. Metro Cebu’s daily demand for water now exceeds 275,000 cubic meters. The MCWD provides only over 100,000 cubic meters, although it serves less than half of city households. It loses 38 percent of the water to theft and leakages.

City Hall can’t afford JVC-type projects. A quarter of its budget pays devaluation-bloated yen loans for Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s South Reclamation Project, which is water short.

No other credible investors are around. Investments for water “waned after publicized financial losses incurred in concession contracts in Manila, Jakarta and Latin America,” the Asian Development Bank notes. The ADB is convening 200 experts at the end of May to address this concern.

A consortium pullout would confirm findings by the “Philippine Cities Competitiveness” survey that among 13 metro cities, Cebu trailed at “ninth in responsiveness to business needs.” The cities of Davao, Makati, Marikina and Muntinlupa ranked ahead of Cebu, the Asian Institute of Management study added.

“Frogs do not drink up the pond in which they live,” an old Inca proverb says. “In Cebu City, the sustainable capacity of its small (180 sq km) aquifers has been exceeded 3.6 times, and 7.4 times in Mandaue,” studies by the USAID, Delft University and ADB show.

Water tables are slumping. E-coli bacteria from human and animal waste have shut down some wells. Others are turning brackish -- a sign that salt water is seeping into emptied aquifers.

“The saline water edge has penetrated three kilometers inland,” says the Water Resources Center which tracked salination since 1973. “It is moving at the rate of 100 to 150 meters per year.” Contamination now brushes against the foothills.

Osmeña’s administration “never worked its way through to a comprehensive urban policy,” the Cebu Daily News noted. “Water, garbage, land use and others remain policy black holes.”

Results careened between the bizarre to pathetic. Osmeña earlier proposed a snow-fed Lake Arrowhead of California, which serves 25,000 people, as model for Cebu’s tropical watershed, which serves over a million. “He reminds us of a line from Acts of the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday,” the Sun Star said. “This man is not drunk, as many seem to think. It is only nine in the morning.”

Ricardo Cardinal Vidal and civil society got President Fidel Ramos to issue Proclamation 1074 to correct falsified maps because Osmeña couldn’t be bothered by the issue. His partisans dominate the MCWD.

The mayor stomps on dissent, compounding policy flaws. The city council is a “harem of eunuchs” unable to fiscalize. “What Osmeña wants, Osmeña gets,” GMA Network television commentator Bobby Nalzaro notes.

Trapped in this policy vacuum was the draft agreement on the JVC proposal. Negotiated over three years, it was anchored to the Dublin Conference Principle that water is an “economic good.” It becomes available when a “fair return” is ensured for investors.

In the fourth year of talks, a new set of MCWD consultants scuppered the draft agreement with new demands: decrease volume delivery to 42,000 cubic meters per day, scrap joint management rights in the event of a default by the MCWD, etc. “The voice is that of Jacob, but the hands are those of Esau.”

Time loss, inflation, and spreading aquifer damage, meanwhile, take their toll. The new conditions result in “a return on investment lower that what was approved by government,” the summary notes. So, has City Hall left this serious investor no other recourse but to pick up its marbles?

The ADB’s 12-volume study “Water For All” notes that politicians all over the region try to curry favor with voters by shoving water bills below production cost. The result is less water from shoddy service. “Water utilities … cannot cover even maintenance and operational costs.” It locks firms into obsolescence as “they cannot generate funds for expansion.

There is no substitute for water. So, governments must “create an environment conducive for successful public and private investment,” the ADB says. The first major step: “Establish credible regulatory frameworks devoid of political interference.”

Asia has successful examples in Singapore’s Public Utilities Board, the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority and Manila Water Inc., the ADB points out. In Manila, the Ayala firm expanded its coverage from 325,000 to 593,000 households, installed water taps for 138,000 indigent families, reduced costs of water by 29 percent with a reduced staff, ensured 24-hour service -- and made a fair profit.

“Experience shows that a principal impediment to accessing financing for the water sector is the absence of good governance,” the ADB points out. “The reverse is likewise true. Good governance can lead to increasing financial viability and consequently improving access to finance.”

That’s Cebu, all right.

Lumad Basakanon bags title plus P1M in Aliwan festival
The Freeman 05/01/2006

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/net/2006/01/17/article_160248_01-17-2006.jpg
Lumad Basakanon brought pride to the Cebuano community when it was adjudged grand champion last Saturday in this year's Aliwan Festival held in Manila.

The Lumad Basakanon of Cebu City, that bagged several championship titles in this year's Sinulog Mardi Gras, was the official representative of Region VII to compete with other groups from different regions in the dance contest.

The Aliwan festival is an annual cultural event that brings together almost all major festivals from various regions of the country. The festival was spearheaded by Manila Broadcasting Company, together with the cities of Manila and Pasay and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Former councilor George Rama, the head delegate of the Lumad Basakanon, said that there were 28 participating contingents and that they were the last performer to compete in the national championship, which kicked off from April 27 and culminated last April 29.

Aside from the prestige, the group received P1 million, Rama said.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he will endorse to the city council the passing of a resolution declaring the Lumad Basakanon of barangay Basak as the official dance troupe of Cebu City.

Osmeña added that the Lumad Basakanon will represent Cebu City in all cultural events nationwide, giving significance to the promotion of the Sinulog festivity.

Lumad Basakanon first joined the Sinulog Mardi Gras in 1991 and won top prize in the barangay division.

In 2005, the group was adjudged grand champion in the Free Interpretation category. They also bagged the Best in Costume and Best in Musicality awards.

However, in 2006, the Lumad Basakanon failed to grab a spot in the Free Interpretation category, but landed first in the street-dancing category.

Through the years, talents were discovered. Most importantly, the group served as an avenue for young people to engage in activities that proved effective in keeping them away from drugs and other vices, Rama said. - Garry B. Lao

Cebu IT development spurs real estate infra

DESPITE the country’s unstable political climate last year, Ayala-controlled Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. (CPVDC) managed to grow its net income by 7.5 percent to P33 million from P30.7 million in 2004.

This positive growth, which the company has attributed to the income generated from lot sales and lease from firms located at the Asiatown Information Technolgy Park (AITP), is one of the manifestations that Cebu is nearing its goal of becoming a hub for information technology (IT) and IT-related services, CPVDC chief operating officer Francis Monera said.

Hotspot

“Cebu, with its urban conveniences, yet relatively tranquil environment, is fast becoming a hotspot for IT and IT-enabled businesses,” he said during the company’s 2006 stockholders’ meeting at the City Sports Club Cebu last Friday.

To emphasize the world-class quality of Cebuano IT professionals, Monera cited one of AITP’s locators, NCR Cebu Development Corp., which produces software for point-of-sales-machine.

Software

“(When you) travel to the US, Australia and Europe, and you get to transact with the so-called fastlane self checkout terminal—a self-service machine used in supermarkets in these countries—the operating system of that machine can very well be the work of a young software designer at the NCR of our Asiatown,” he said.

AITP, the first IT park in Southern Philippines, is a project of CPVDC, a subsidiary of Ayala Land Inc.-affiliate Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI).

“AITP is host to companies which represent a good mix of software research and development, business process outsourcing companies and contact centers, bringing in millions of pesos in investments and employing thousands of people,” Monera said.

These companies include Globe Telecom, NEC Software Philippines, Tsuneishi group of companies, NCR Cebu Development Center, Epson Precision Philippines Inc., PeopleSupport Philippines Inc., eTelecare Global Solutions, Dash Engineering, SPI Technologies and Versagraphix Design Philippines Inc.

More space

To meet the increasing demand for office spaces, two more buildings were constructed last year at AITP. These were results of the company’s investor-matching program, wherein CPVDC facilitates talks between a possible investor and a lot owner at AITP.

More office space will soon be available, as Primary Industrial Property Corp. (PIPC) and Skyrise Realty and Development Corp. (SRDC) are in the process of constructing their own buildings.

SRDC, which bought three lots in 2004, is completing the construction of an eight-level building with about 15,500 square meters available for rent.

PIPC, the contractor of the Engineering and Sciences Building, has also started constructing its second building that will have a total area for lease of 16,000 square meters.

PIPC bought two more lots with a total area of 2,854 square meters last year. Last year, the company opened a retail strip, which included a variety of restaurants, a coffee shop, a convenient store, IT shops, a spa and a dental center. (JBN)

Asiatown IT Park to host more BPOs, commercial outlets for IT locators
By -- MARITES S. VILLAMOR
Visayas Bureau Chief
Business World

Cebu City -- Asiatown IT Park will soon host at least 31,500 square meters of additional leasable office space for business process out-sourcing (BPO) and other technology-related companies, a hotel and additional commercial establishments that support the infor-mation technology (IT) industry.

Francis O. Monera, newly elected president of the Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. (CPVDC), said they have also started plans to develop a 5-hectare portion of the 24-hectare park.

CPVDC, which developed Asia-town, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cebu Holdings, Inc., an affiliate of Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI).

"We’re still in the conceptual stage. We’re looking at more com-mercial lots. Another option is to temporarily put up e-Office build-ings there. Or it could even be a Serendra. We’re still calibrating the market," he said.

An e-Office is a pre-engineered one-storey modular building sys-tem that caters to IT companies while Serendra is a 12-hectare residential development in the Bonifacio Global City.

CPVDC is pushing for a hotel, a residential development and commercial establishments that operate 24/7 to support the grow-ing IT community at Asiatown. One of the lot buyers has informed CPVDC that he was going to build a hotel.

Mr. Monera said he was not privy to the details. He said the hotel will be constructed on one of the four lots that they sold only in the first quarter of this year.

"This is a very interesting trend. We sold only three lots last year. We’re only in our fourth month this year and we have already sold four lots -- one will be a hotel while the three others will be office build-ings," Mr. Monera said.

Aside from the five-hectare development, Mr. Monera said they will start the construction late this year of an e-Office building that will house units 12 to 15. The e-Office units 1 to 11 are occupied by NEC Telecom Software Phils., Inc., PeopleSupport Phils., Inc., Tsu-neishi Technical Services (Phils.), Inc., Epson Precision (Phils.), and NCR Cebu Development Center.

"We have very serious negotiations with one company that is interested in leasing units 12 to 15," he said. He declined to identify the company, but said it’s a foreign IT-related company with operations in the Philippines.

CPVDC will spend around P70 million for this new e-Office build-ing, which will have about 4,000 square meters of office space. Each e-Office unit is 1,008 square meters.

Lot owners Primary Industry Property Corp. (PIPC), and Skyrise Realty and Development Corp. are constructing separate buildings that will provide a total of 31,500 square meters of additional office space for BPOs and other IT-related companies at Asiatown.

PIPC, which purchased two other lots last year, has completed its Engineering and Sciences Building and has started work on its second building which will provide a gross leasable area of 16,000 square meters. Sky-rise Realty, which bought three lots in 2004, is completing an eight-storey building that will have a gross leasable area of 15,500 square meters.

Meanwhile, Mr. Monera said they will renovate The Village which ceased operations when its lease contract expired in December 2005. "The commercial center business group will operate a retail component that will include chill-out and specialty shops designed to operate 24/7 to serve the unique needs of this growing [IT] population," he said.

Among the possible establishments that would occupy the new commercial center are spa and wellness centers as well as restaurants and bars.

With the increase in leasable space and additional support facilities, Mr. Monera said they were confident that Asiatown will attract more locators.

In 2005, Mr. Monera reported to stockholders that CPVDC gene-rated P121.8 million in revenues from the sale of two lots and e-Office rentals. Net income rose 7% to P33 million. The company distributed cash dividends of P0.80 per share towards the end of 2005, Mr. Monera added.

a former colleague of mine who works in a software dev't company at asiatown mentioned that their visiting japanese counterparts, oftentimes, hardly get reservations in cebu city's hotels. instead, they go to as far as mactan hotels and even 'the not so' famous ones, just to find a room. that scarce especially during the peak seasons.

Firm plans expansion of eOffice
Additional space to serve growing demand
Published: 01 Mayl 2006

by Irene R. Sino Cruz

With the growing demand for office spaces by information technology companies, the Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. (CPVDC) plans to expand its eOffice facility at the company-owned Asiatown IT Park to serve as temporary offices for new and existing companies.

CPVDC president Francis Monera said the company would spend about P70 million for the phase two of eOffice.

“As we look ahead and capitalize on this IT (information technology) uptrend, the future development for Asiatown IT Park includes the construction of phase two of eOffice within the year,” Monera said.

The company built the eOffice about three years ago to provide office space to information technology companies wanting to set up operations in Cebu.

At the time, Asiatown did not have any building that could accommodate the special requirements of IT companies, which were coming to Cebu looking for appropriate office space.

The company then decided to build the eOffice to show owners of lots at the Asiatown that there is a demand for office space so that they would construct buildings on their lots.

While some lot owners responded to the challenge and have constructed or started to construct buildings on their lots, Monera said the expansion program was not enough to meet the demand.

Because of this, he said, CPVDC will build the expansion of the eOffice at a lot adjacent to the Globe Telecom building.

Why don't they just construct a building instead of an eOffice? Just that i'd prefer the building over the eOffice. :)

Despite that the banded sea snakes shown in the images of the said website are very poisonous (10-15 times of the potency of cobra), they are docile unless you disturbed the nest, during mating, or when the snake is washed ashore.

The country’s food, beaches and the people’s warm and friendly attitude will lure Italian tourists, an official of the Italiani Associati Cebu Inc. (IAC) said yesterday.

“The country should make use of its potentials of tapping and attracting more Italian and other European tourists,” IAC president Walter Finzi de Vita told Sun.Star Cebu.

The country’s beaches are “better” than those in Thailand, he noted.
“Filipinos even speak better English. Your bea-ches are more beautiful. But how come Thailand’s tourism industry is way bigger than the Philippines’?” he said.

He noted that accessibility is one challenge in attracting European tourists due to the “lack or shortage” of flights from the country to Europe.

History

IAC is an organization of Italians in Cebu that seeks to promote Italian businesses, tourism, culture and relationship with various sectors in the country.

De Vita said Italy and Philippines have a long history.

He said Italian chronicler Antonio Pigafetta, Ferdinand Magellan’s second official in command, was the “first Italian tourist” who set foot in Cebu.

“We would like to maintain our warm rapport with the locals,” he said.

Pigafetta’s monument, which stands on the Plaza Independencia, speaks of Italian presence in the city, he said.

He added that the Italian community in Cebu is keen on helping promote the city and the country more.

He said Italian businesses and investments in the country can grow “a hundred times more” and Italian tourists will increase by promoting the country in Italy.

De Vita also revealed that IAC solicited some P1 million worth of 30 pieces of hearing appliances from multinational company, Amplifon Italia Spa, as part of its “humanitarian” efforts.

The hearing-impaired indigent children at the Mission for the Deaf Center in Banilad, Cebu City will benefit from the donation, he said.

The Mission for the Deaf was first opened in Italy and was brought to Cebu some 20 years ago. (ALC)

Coal-fired power plants to be ready by 2008

The construction of the coal-fired power plant of Korea Electric Power Corp. (Kepco) in Naga, Cebu is still, so far, on schedule.

This means that the power plant will start producing power for consumers in Cebu by December 2008, Cebu power core group chairman Carlos Co said.

“Even if the contract with Visayan Electric Co. will not push through, the construction will push through (until completion),” he said in an interview on the sidelines of the general membership meeting of the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Cebu Grand Convention Center.

Co admitted that the burning of coal is hazardous to the environment. But Cebu has no choice but to choose the lesser evil.

“Bunker fuel is also not environment-friendly and it is expensive compared to coal. (If we do not allow Kepco to operate), Cebu will have power shortage in the next years” he said.

Co said Cebu is holding on to Kepco’s promise to invest on environmental protection.

“And as long as the implementation of the policies to protect the environment is made strict, (then air pollution will be minimized),” he said.

National and local government officials already expressed their support for the project during the groundbreaking last year.

Pollutants

Subic Enerzone general manager Dante Pollescas earlier said Kepco’s fluidized bed technology, which dampens the ash-wastes of coal-fired power plants, minimizes the waste pollutants of coal-fired power plants.

Hydro-electric Development Corp. vice president Miguel Salas earlier said the geographical profile of Cebu limits its capacity to produce clean energy.

Aside from Kepco, Mirant Philippines, located in Toledo City, is using coal to run its power plant. (JBN)

Lapu City to launch search for Ms. South Pacific

The Lapu-Lapu City Government has found another way to attract tourists to visit Mactan Island especially during the annual re-enactment of the Kadaugan sa Mactan.

According to Lapu-Lapu Tourism Council Chairman Rudy Villalobos, the City will institutionalize the Miss South Pacific search, the culminating activity of the festival.

Phoebe Cates Perez, the winner of last Friday’s beauty and brains pageant, which was co-organized by Cebu-based independent film production company, Sugbu Films Philippines Inc., was the first one who grabbed the Miss South Pacific title.

The pageant was held last Friday at the Vistamar Beach Resort in Mactan.

International

Villalobos said the pageant will go international next year since they plan to invite contestants from all over the world.

“We (Lapu-Lapu government) would like to do this every year with participants from other countries,” he said during the event.

Promote

Villalobos said he will ask the Cebu Association of Tour Operators to help Lapu-Lapu and Sugbu Films in promoting the event to tourists.

Sugbu Films creative director Tom Po has expressed gratitude to the Lapu-Lapu City Government for organizing the event, which was sponsored by the Cebu Province, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and Philippine Gaming and Amusement Board, part of the Kadaugan sa Mactan Festival.

“Rest assured that we (Sugbu Films) will be making the necessary preparations for next year’s beauty pageant next month,” he said.

Sugbu Films produces Cebuano television series and handles events, among others. It aims to revitilize Cebu’s local film industry, which had its heyday in the 1990s. (JBN)

Cebu should really promote itself in Europe and hopefully open more direct flights to/from European countries, a lot of people in there have a lot of $$$ to spend, almost all my european friends have traveled to at least two or three countries already, they like to travel.

^^ one of the great contributors to the beauty of our skyline is our mountain background.. most cities with densely packed highrises don't have that kind of scenario.. sus, duul pa jud ta sa dagat, ug island nga murag boracay (except that it's too urbanized)... well. we'll just c 5 years later (a 5-year time span would already make a big difference to our skyline)... and in 5 years time, graduate na ko college! hehe.. off topic.. :D
