No sir, I sure don't. I mostly just rely on infos you guys posted here and from the ABS-CBN news online, but you are right, I'm excited about the plans of a new Bohol airport being constructed, I've even seen the rendering posted somewhere here about it. I think Bohol is close to Boracay? I've never been there yet and I heard it's kind of a pain just to go there because it is being served by airlines with smaller aircrafts and I hate being in a small plane like that.
Oh BTW, You can call me anything you want but just don't call me late for diner!!!! LOL :) ;) I should be almost old enough to be your dad, I understand you are 14 y/o so...........

Wow! I was never able to post the whole day yesterday so babawiin ko today
1. why will that Bohol International Airport ever rival Cebu? It can't!, we're established! Instead of rivaling, maybe it could even help Cebu in boosting it's tourism mandates because international tourists bound for Bohol might as well visit the world class Cebu...

2. Many are arguing why Cebu is considered as the Queen City of the South... First, because we are the second biggest city outside Metro Manila. Second, MALACANANG of the SOUTH is located in Cebu... Malacanang is the place where the president stays during vacation and important appointments and visits. There are a lot more of reasons but I could not just state them all because they are obvious. They are seen and heard.

3. Curtis, a world renowned illusionist will visit Ayala Center Cebu on Sept. 2-4 for mall shows. For schedules, please visit www.ayalamalls.com.ph

An international airport will surely complement Cebu I couldn't imagine why anyone would think that airport in Bohol would be built just to rival Cebu :) Actually, I really think Cebu is considered Queen City just because of its economic status :) perhaps the President's pet city? hehe

and another thing...
4. Cebu is home to the BIGGEST, WORLD FAMOUS, MOTHER of all Philippine Festivals..The SINULOG Festival...Kahit na siguro ilakip ang lahat ng Kadayawan, Atiatihan, Maskarra, Dinagyang, etc..,It will never beat the ESTABLISHED SINULOG FESTIVAL...Sorry ha, wag sanang magalit...

Are you sure about that? Have to been to all of them? In what basis do you make this statement? ...

to add to that, we in CEBU just serve as models to smaller and developing cities.. In our latest State of the Province Address, we are proud to say that we have ZERO DEBTS/ wala kaming utang/ wala dyud mi'y utang/ hehe :)
I hope other developing cities learn from Cebu's successes too, it really needs a strong local gov't to achieve progresss rather than relying on the nat'l gov't for anything!

Cebu not having debts? that's amazing! Imagine building an international airport, large seaports, wide roads, and buying the reclamation land (A huge one at that!) without using loans!? :| ... Having debts and a budget surplus are 2 different things, you know . It actually is economically unwise to have no debts (if budget is experiencing a surplus).

good for you sleepwalker coz you appreciate any achievement of any city in the Philippines not like those people from that city (Iloilo), building lang, pinipintasan pa in his intention to let Cebu down.... ok lang cguro na mamintas kung meron din sila eh kaso wala!
Let's not generalize okay :) Not all ilonggos think that Cebu is a bastard  city. Tallers is entitled to his own opinion even though its immature and careless.

Actually Cebu as a city is actually bigger than Iloilo City

I really liked this pic that i took recently...

Children playing in an open field safely with the modern pag-ibig tower behind.
I think it speaks for Cebu as a livable city, A children friendly city. "Very Safe indeed". It's only my opinion.

1. First, I've not been to all festivals but definitely Sinulog has its own color and something lively that other festivals doesn't have.
2. Yes, Cebu does not have debts at all.. I based this statement from Gov. Gwen Garcia's latest State of the Province Address wherein she quoted, "Cebu is no.1 with ZERO debts!" and even the local spectators and investors had a street party afterwards.

I have no idea sleepwalker uno, no info bout its owner....

Cebu Plaza Hotel - it was built last 1981...about 24 years ago...whoa! older than me.
It is one of the most famous Hotel not only in Cebu but in the whole country during the 80's and 90's. But now, still standing tall.

I hope some of the 1.5 B will be used to make the pool better, because the last time I went, their pool was nothing special. But the views are outrageously stunning though.

and they're building a nature park now? i really gotta go back there. but i want the cebu boardwalk to be done first. how many more years before the cebu boardwalk opens? anyone knows?

They are not building a nature park, it is actually built already. The park is on its final phases of construction. I hope this gets fully operational sooner.
According to the press releases its target completion date is by 2007...This includes the whole complex (Fisherman's Wharf, etc...)

Cebu’s dining market still far from saturation – restaurateur
by Ehda M. Dago-oc
August 24, 2005

The vibrant economic movement in Cebu has prompted a young couple to venture into a semi-fine dining restaurant business to add to the variety of restaurant choices in the metropolis.
Inspired by her passion for food, after Mary Rose K. Lu completed her culinary studies in Institute of Culinary Education in New York in the U.S., together with husband Robert, a western-fusion Melange Resto was opened in Cebu at the newly opened Banilad Town Center (BTC).

BTC, is now the newest lifestyle and entertainment destination in Cebu.

Although, there are dozens of newly opened restaurants in Metro Cebu, the couple believes that as long as one comes up with quality food, with reasonable prices, a business, such as restaurant can be profitable.

Mary said Cebu’s dining market is still climbing up, and is far from saturation. With the growing number of population, increasing opportunities for employment, and doubling number of tourists, she is confident that she can achieved the venture’s Return of Investments (ROI) in just a short time of two years.

Besides, she said in Cebu there are still a few restaurant outlets that offer western-fusion inspired cuisine, thus the entry of Melange to the restaurant industry here, would allow more choices for diners.

“Western-fusion type of cuisine is not common here in Cebu, that’s why we immediately grabbed the opportunity,” said Mary, who is hands-on of the restaurant operation in the kitchen.

She said considering the “spending culture” of Cebuanos, who are into “value for money” type of customers, Melange meal servings are pegged (very) reasonably.

Conducive ambiance is one of the important ingredients to dining. Mary cited that she spent almost half of the total amount of the restaurant investment for the details of the restaurant’s ambiance.

It does not necessary follows that a good ambiance restaurant is an expensive one, she said. “I understand the Cebu market pulse already, as a Cebuana, price and quality are very important.”

On the sides, the restaurant which is designed for family-diners, and can accommodate about 80 people, also serves the snacks and coffee, and after dinner clientele.

Economists earlier projected that the sunrise industries that are expected to thrive more than the others are the three Fs-Food, Fashion and Fun.

For a tourism positioned area, like Cebu, any food business, as long as it offers quality service and reasonable prices, can go a long way. In fact, other Cebu-based restaurateurs had opened several restaurant outlets around Visayas and Mindanao, also in Luzon.

its really hard to find a spot where a cable-stayed bridge can be built within metro manila. 2nd Mactan bridge is almost 2 kms long so there has to be at least a kilometer span body of water. but Pasig will definitely look magnificent if there's a bridge similar to London Bridge. hehe

Mambaling access to SRP done, but still closed to traffic

The Mambaling access to the South Reclamation Project (SRP) is now passable although the Cebu City Government is not yet opening it to the public because the road is not yet thoroughly asphalted.

As DPWH closes South Coastal Road entrance in Aduana for the construction and the digging of the 1.4 billion Cebu Subway Tunnel, a four lane road passing under Malacanang sa Sugbo and Plaza Independencia and exits at Mc Arthur blvd.

This access road is seen to help decongest traffic in the downtown areas and on N. Bacalso Ave. If one travels from southern Cebu and wants to go to Labangon, he can use the Mambaling access road to get through Tres De Abril St. He does not have to pass through Pardo or N. Bacalso Ave., Osmeña said.

The road, whose pavement will have a width of 20 meters, will be a four-lane highway that will accommodate trailer trucks. The 542-meter access road is seen to cause the market values of the SRP to shoot up.

its really hard to find a spot where a cable-stayed bridge can be built within metro manila. 2nd Mactan bridge is almost 2 kms long so there has to be at least a kilometer span body of water. but Pasig will definitely look magnificent if there's a bridge similar to London Bridge. hehe

Yuck, London Bridge?! Tower bridge is more awesome.

If all the seven buildings are erected as shown in the site development plan then Cebu will be in the making of a "Little Hongkong".

^^ im not really sure about this as well. my high-school classmate owns a unit at citylights (the first two towers are already completed) and we stayed there a few years ago. back then the original plan was 5 towers. all 5 of them are supposedly similar in size but IMO with regards to the recent development, instead of building 5 towers they make towers 3 & 4 bigger and taller (i think!). but who knows, they needed to make towers 3 & 4 bigger because of the demand and most likely build the 5th tower if the demand continues to rise. they actually got the best spot to view the whole Metro Cebu and i think that's one of the many factors why it's doing well in the market. :D

the span between the two towers, currently the longest in the world. sorry i don't have the exact measurement. just in case, extradosed cable-stayed is different from suspension bridges. there are cable-stayed bridges in KL, hongkong, japan, etc. they got taller towers but the second mactan bridge has the longest centerspan so far. they didnt make the towers taller due to the proximity of the international airport.. but still the most beautiful in the country. :okay:

in my opinion, they actually have a better staff than PAL, they are younger, happier, courteous. In fact I don't like some of the staff in PAL, especially in international flights. And oh! Cebu Pacific's funflights are awesome!! are there still funflights right now?

comments about cebu pacific from travelers

http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/cebu-pacific.htm -- this is from the skytrax website, the organization who awards the best airline and airport awards.

Cebu Pacific has a lot of potential to be The Philippines' best airline if they serve better food, make the interior better, improve it's in-flight entertainment, better planes and probably more destinations.

Cebu City, Province land in 'top earners' list
By Aledel Gonzales-Cuizon

CEBU CITY -- Cebu City and Province landed in the list of the top income earners among local governments last year, according to the Commission on Audit (COA).

Unfortunately, Cebu City also has the highest total liabilities among 117 cities in the country, at P3.86 billion.

The city is among the top 10 in terms of assets, cash in bank and gross income, but did not make it to the 2004 list of cities with the highest net income.

Cebu Province, on the other hand, ranks third among the provinces with the highest net income, at P307.6 million.

It has the third highest gross income among the provinces last year, at P1.26 billion, but also the fifth highest expenses, at P948 million.

Cebu Province is first among the provinces based on current assets, with some P1.25 billion; and also has the largest amount of cash in the bank, with some P1.03 billion.

These were part of the COA's findings after reviewing the financial performance of 75 provinces, 117 cities and 1,419 towns as of December 2004.

None of Cebu's towns made it to the list of top income earners. None were listed as big spenders either.

But the municipality of Tabuelan in Cebu's fourth district was among the local governments that reported net losses. They spent P731,000 more in operations than what they earned, the COA report showed.

COA's list came out as a paid advertisement in a national newspaper last Saturday.

It lists Cebu City as sixth among all cities with the highest expenses, at P1.57 billion.

Bottom line

In 2003, Cebu City posted the highest total net income among cities. But that year, it also had the highest amount of liabilities.

Just last week, Cebu City handed over a check for P300 million, to pay for part of the principal and interest of a loan it obtained to build the South Reclamation Project (SRP).

At current exchange rates, its SRP debt now amounts to some P6.3 billion, with about P600 million due next year. But city officials remain optimistic that once titles are issued, it will find plenty of investors to help City Hall avoid cash flow problems.

COA reported that in 2004, local governments nationwide earned a total of some P173.5 billion, but also spent P143.7 billion, for a combined net income of P29.8 billion.

At P109.2 billion, the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) accounted for more than 60 percent of the total income of local governments.

IRA-dependent

Pangasinan Province had the highest IRA, at P921.6 million, and Cebu Province came in second, at P908 million.

Quezon City received P1.47 billion in IRA, the largest among cities. Davao City came in second, at P1.4 billion.

Cebu City placed seventh, with some P608 million in IRA last year.

Quezon City topped the list of cities with the highest gross income, at P6.5 billion. It also placed first among the cities with the highest net income, at P2.48 billion.

The cities that reported the largest net incomes included Makati, P1.66 billion; Pasig, P1.13 billion; Manila, P947 million; and Olongapo, P591 million.

Manila ranked first among the cities that were big spenders last year, at P5.26 billion.

Davao City spent P633.2 million more than Cebu City did in 2004.

Liabilities

Like Cebu City, it did not figure in the list of cities with the highest net incomes.

Among the provinces, Bulacan was the biggest spender, and reported P1.14 billion in expenses. Negros Occidental placed second, at P1.01 billion.

Among the provinces, Cebu ranked 10th in terms of total liabilities, pegged at P461.6 million.

Palawan ranked first in this category.

Joining Cebu in the list of provinces with the highest gross income were Laguna, P1.37 billion; Bulacan, P1.33 billion; Negros Occidental, P1.14 billion; and Cavite, P1.14 billion.

Facing proposals to create three more provinces out of three congressional districts, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has warned that splitting the province will cause it to lose its premier status as one of the country's wealthiest local governments. (Sun.Star Cebu/Sunnex)

I guess Cebu city does have debts after all

The good thing is...

Cebu City
+ first based on total net income
+ sixth biggest spender

Cebu Province
+ first based on current assets
+ largest amount of cash in the bank
+ third highest net income
+ fifth highest expenses

The way I look at it, Cebu has the highest liabilities because of investments but Cebu is the highest income earner because the investments are good. :D

Cebu City has to sell lots from SRP about 40 hectares at P10,000 /sq.meter to pay it's P3.86 billion debt or 80 hectares @ 5000 /sq.m.

I always wonder if the people who they make monuments for are really that muscular and that built. For all we know our pantheon of heroes like Lapu Lapu in Mactan, Bonifacio in Manila and all the people who have bronze statues made after them were not very good looking, were of short stature and have love handles.

(no offense meant to our Cebuanos here-- - I'm talking about national heroes in general)

yes, the Cebu Pacific flight stewards are really posh and "kikay" but the food they serve when I rode once was not pretty impressive...(e.g. a big pack of Chippy) unlike PAL which serves a variety (crackers, nuts, a cake, juice, etc.)... The interior of Cebu Pacific is also a bit dirty and "masikip"...

1. Cebu will be generating more income for the 120+ lampposts in the 2nd Mandaue-Mactan Bridge will be used for ad purposes... The size would be suited so as to not distract the driving public. The proposed contract price is P100,000/10monts per lamppost so how much will that generate?

2. Have you noticed our mini-baywalk in IBO, Lapu-lapu City. It's actually the one opposite the airport field... This started 2 years ago with vendors who sell grilled products.. Now, the Lapu-lapu City government has posed interest to develop this area and infact, it is now fenced... Nice job slerz! great efforts from you. good luck to michaelsinjin for his intramurals. rusty is still unstopable. Jimbu thanks for the pics.

Hats off to you guys, the pillars of cebu thread!!

I'm having fun of letting everybody know that Cebu is very livable and very beautiful. I also want my fellow Cebuano forumers who are living abroad to know the latest developments and heppenings in our beloved CEBU.coz after all, even if they're living in the richest country that whatever happens, they will still go back to their homeland, "CEBU" a paradise homeland where they left their hearts....whoa

Thanks Dominique!

Anyway slerz and michael i've read an article last year that a 16 storey building was to be constructed near colon and osmeña blvd. it was something like a head office for the cebu based appliance center and the upper floors to be used as a hotel. any idea on this?

Here it is construction is ongoing, 16 storey GV Hotel and Citi Appliance Center (8.26).

i also love the hanging traffic lights (w/ TEDMAN sign) in Mandaue City... They are manually-operated by traffic police on their outposts... So, this would be better since they have control over the traffic flow especially when it's peak hours na kailangang i-lengthen ang go time ng isang lane for the traffic to ease...

no. i've never lived in cebu or mactan but let's put it this way...i don't really like cebu city...BUT, i am all for mactan. if there is a cheap property in mactan, i would want to have a piece of it. then if i need to be in the central business district of cebu, i can just cross the bridge and be in cebu for the day...then safely retreat to mactan for respite at the end of the day.

furthermore, if i need to fly back to manila, being in mactan means i'd be only a stone's throw away from the airport.

New building in Asiatown to house more investors

The information technology (IT) park in Apas, Cebu City will have more room for future investors by the end of this year.

Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. (CPVDC) managing director Francis Monera said the eight-story Skyrise Building that is being constructed at the Asiatown IT Park will be available for lease by the end of this year.

About 13,800 square meters of the building will be available for lease.

Monera also revealed that the Primary Industrial Property Corp. (PIPC) will construct another building at Asiatown IT Park.

PIPC built the 10-story Engineering and Science Building on a 25,000-square-meter property in Asiatown. The building houses firms like Dash Engineering, SPI Technology and e-Telecare, a call-center company.

Monera said the Engineering and Science Building is already fully occupied.

The 24-hectare Asiatown IT Park is equipped with underground telecommunications system with multi-server duct lines and fiber optic capability, high-speed asynchronous transfer mode backbone and digital subscriber line technology, underground power cables and high voltage switch gears and transformers using 23 kilovolt lines connected to two main power grids for power supply, centralized sewage treatment plant with maximum capacity of 25, 000 cubic meters, road network and drainage system, water and industry competent labor.

The park, owned by CPVDC, was approved by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority on April 6, 2000 and proclaimed a special economic zone on Feb. 27, 2001.

Firms in IT parks, including Asiatown, enjoy income tax holiday of four years for non-pioneer IT enterprises or six years for pioneer IT enterprises. They have the option to pay a special five percent tax on gross income instead of national and local taxes except real property taxes.

IT park investors are also exempted from payment of import duties and taxes on imported machinery and equipment and raw materials.

They can also deduct half of their training expenses on gross income tax.

Foreign investors, who make an initial investment of $150,000 on IT projects, will also be granted permanent resident status in the country. (JBN)

I find Metro Gaisano not that impressive. Compared to many other department stores and supermarkets in Metro Manila, the Metro Gaisano in Market Market lacks a lot of products and variety. And for a relatively new store, they should have built a walkalator for shopping carts. It is so much easier that way. Currently, you have to wait for the elevator to go to the parking lot with your groceries (in a cart) or you have to walk a distance to use the ramp.

I do not bring my digicam always...just my phone...I think it's not wise to take pics of diffrent buildings through a digicam coz one time I took a shot of Marriott Hotel with my digicam but the guards stared @ me with their sharp looks coz maybe of what happened in their Jakarta branch thats why they're very strict regarding these matters. When I went to Market! Market!, it was really crowded but mom and I was curious if Metro Gaisano in M!M! would be like the MG in Cebu... Yes, it was similar to MG in Cebu except for the crowd you'd see in a typical MG store... The products, for me is already a variety and if you'll just look around, they're complete...Maybe what they lack is experienced cashiers and salespeople because when we asked a certain product, they said they have it but they can't locate which aisle it is located.. MG in Market! Market! also has advantage because they can easily have Cebu products in their store because they are Cebu-based... MG Market Market is still an experiment so they will eventually renovate, refurbish and improve. :)

>>Metro Ayala Center-Supermarket(anchor of Ayala Center Cebu) is even more successful than SM Supermarket in SM City Cebu... The fact that Metro Ayala Supermarket has 40+ check out counters, it still has long queue lines but SM Supermarket has 27 check out counters yet no queues at all. :sleepy:

THE MAGIC OF CURTIS (Curtis Eugene Lovell II) in AYALA CENTER CEBU on September 2-4 is really a must-see event...

I just saw some facts from Curtis's website... www.magicofcurtis.com
Anyway, I'll post some..
Below are brief descriptions of Curtis' most popular shows.

Curtis shows consist of:

Mind Reading
Sleight of Hand

Defying the laws of Nature
Comedy

Card Effects
Illusions

Audience Participation
Death Defying Stunts

Amazing Magic
Stylish Performances
Elton John & Curtis Eugene II

Hot Spots:

Need some magic for a few minutes? Curtis has designed four breath taking hot spots that vary from three to five minutes in length. These hot spots requires verylittle staging and prep time on your part. They can be customized to fit your events needs, and are presented in several
different manners such as; comical or theatrical. Each has a prerecord announcement teaser.

Levitation with two dancers or host
Sword through a spectator
The Great Escape

Strolling Magic:

Close up magic is an intimate touch. This is where Curtis will perform magic in front of various groups of guests throughout the evening. The guests will go wild as they witness magic right in front of their eyes and in their own hands. If it should be Curtis borrowing a quarter and biting it in half and visually restoring it, or making a barrow watch come to a complete stop, with Curtis' humor and incredibility in magic this is always a crowd pleaser.

Stage Show:

Stand up show or a stage show is a collection of the best routines, comedy bits, audience participation and magic feats that Curtis has been developing since a child. This is great for smaller crowds to large crowds. Curtis can tailor this show in length and content for your event needs.

Death Defying Stunts:

Want to add some thrills to your event? Great for private and public events. The media goes wild with these proven stunts that Curtis has performed around the world.

Chain Curtis up by his wrist, feet and neck with 6 master locks and lower him into a body of water and wait patiently as he tempers with fate.
“A phobia of drowning? Curtis Eugene II handles this by being shackled and thrown into the water” Wong Kim Hoh - The Straight Times Singapore

No water? Lock Curtis into a steel box with three buzz saws going if he fails to escape in time he can be sliced to death or chained into a clear box of water in which it is sealed and he attempts his escape.
These stunts and methods can be customized to fit many situations.

Illusion programs:
If it should be sawing a spectator in half to floating right in front of your eyes, you will witness the impossible as well as a breath-taking brush of death Curtis encounters during the program. Be prepared to witness many unexplainable spectacles. Comedy, audience participation and magic at its best!

Have you always dreamed about making your boss disappear? Ask Curtis how he can fulfill that dream. This show can be tailored in length and content to fit your specific needs.

Family/Children Programs:
With a child’s imagination Curtis can relate to them in a fun magical fashion. Loads of interaction and participation keep the youngsters and the adults on the edge of their seats with laughter and amazement with carefully selected effects and routines. Performing over 8000 shows and about half being children programs, Curtis has developed a knack in entertaining a diverse group of people. He's Full of energy with a belief that bananas talk, monkeys fly and ready to play games and present magic that children can relate to and adults to be amazed by. With a youthful look, and a friendly smile, Curtis is always an instant hit.

Motivational Speaking:
With an entertaining blend of magic, stories, audience participation and music, Curtis delivers a high energy presentation that will urge your people to do better, to reach for the seemingly impossible, and to always to be the best one can be. Curtis will create an understanding that they can achieve what appears to be impossible. After all, it is what Curtis does every day: the impossible in the art form of magic. Yes, sometimes you, too, need the impossible from your people. This program will show them how, with a magic touch.

The tactics of Curtis are neither trick nor an illusion. He shows how anything can be possible with an event customized to your company’s objectives and goals with carefully selected magic affects, proven business tactics and enthusiasm.

Perfect for: corporate meetings, say no to drugs programs, award ceremonies and other inspirational programs.

Have magic will travel:

Self-contained program (all necessary equipment and props are provided by Curtis.)

Minimal performance spaced needed on close up and stand up/stage shows.

Usually all equipment can be checked as baggage for flight travel (stand up/stage show, close up show.)

Advanced scheduling or last minute performances available for Local, National and International bookings.

See you there! Ayala Discount Plus Card Holders get free passes for the 7pm show on September 2.

Yes, I think Foreign Investors are going to put up more I.T spots in this area...and more call-centers...more skyscrapers...more nightlife too!

yeah.. Cebu is the Queen City of the South right? if a company expands outside Metro Manila, Cebu is always their choice in the Southern part. there was never an instance bypassing Cebu when expanding (as we speak). 80% of major U.S. based call center and BPO companies are already in Cebu. and when they need more workforce, that's the time they will expand in Davao and other cities. :)

Oh sorry! I was supposed to say the first Metro Gaisano in Metro Manila... :)

i heard a story about SM and Gaisano few ages ago and i can't confirm this though. both agreed that SM will only put up malls in Luzon and Gaisano in Visayas and Mindanao. Gaisano violated their agreement, i'm not sure which Gaisano mall in Luzon triggered their dispute. and so SM hurriedly built the SM City mall in Cebu and the rest of the cities in Visayas and Mindanao. and they both live happily ever after hehe.. naintindihan nyo ba? sensya na.

he actually started the thread.

So ibig bang sabihin ay ang Bacolod ang most progressive sa Western Visayas?hmmm! At base sa pics pa lng, malayong malayo pa ang Bacolod sa Cebu. I'm from Iloilo and working here in Cebu. May sabi sabi sila dito na ang taga Bacolod daw ay tikalon or hambog which I refuse to believe but as I've read its accounts and testi's cguro maniniwala na ako.

On the deeper side:::
Iloilo once bacame the second most powerful city in the Philippines during the early 1900's. Tumingala ang Cebu noon sa Iloilo...But why did Iloilo lost its economic power to Cebu? What happened? Whats in Cebu na hindi naipapatuloy ng Iloilo? Sana ang Iloilo ngaun ang most progressive city sa Southern Philippines.. Nanghihinayang lang ako as a son of Iloilo....

DISCLAIMER: this post is based on my personal opinion.

so he's an Ilonggo? no wonder! after judging people from Bacolod naghahasik pa ng lagim sa Cebu thread! i don't wanna generalize but the facts are clear. by merely reading posts from some Ilonggos (i'm not referring to the Cebu threads alone, try exploring other threads), they are so against Cebu's development. what's their problem? at sana po walang plastikan dito. at Tallers, If his city is so great than why bother working in Cebu? clearly he's biting the hand that feeds him.

Thats what I mean in my post sa Hot Queen City issue thread about that Davaoeno that I asked hows Cebu for him and answered infront of me that Cebu is ugly cz he said that it's congested, traffic, chaotic and also the malls he said is not cunsumer friendly, he always say that Davao is better, Davao is better and Davao is better...
So my Question is... if Davao is better why is he here and a number of Davaoenos...
They just say that Cebu is ugly, the city that gave them the opportunity to earn money for themselves, in tagalog "walang utang na loob"....
Another Question... if Cebu is ugly, why do we have the most number of tourists? does it mean that the ugliness of our city is its asset?huh!
They say that Cebuanos are becoming hambog but the truth is we're just deffending our city by those insecure citizens of this country...
Its clear that others don't want our city to succeed more...too many crabs out there though!

read my messages, I didn't post something against other cities, I'm just telling what they said to me.

^ Cebu should definitely be a separate country. Hehe, joke. But instead of hating Cebu for the wrong reasons, why can't they just be happy for cebu's success? besides, cebu's success is kind of like the whole country's success.

And Oh, let them take the title of "Queen City of the South," As if taking the title off from Cebu would stop it's economic growth.

But.. LET THERE BE PEACE!! :)

what is this all about? i thought filipinoes stick together, instead they envey eachother for "better buildings" and "booming basics". gosh how low can you sink.....
you should be proud of all progress everywhere in the country. of corse you cannot compare a building in cebu, iloilo or davao with hong kong, shanghai, london or kuala lumpur. face the facts : the philippines just does not have the money to invest that much into the ediface of a building. nevermind ! it still is nice. and it's the key to progress, construction, infrastructure and tourism growth.
philpal

@richard : i guess the bickering goes back to the fact that a lot of the members on the provincial fora are energetic (if not emotional) young people who still have to explore the oft quoted idea of "unity in diversity". i guess this has always been the downfall of the filipinos, sad to say :(

say, what year were you in the philippines? did you ever study in ISM?

A cable stayed bridge
would be built to connect CORDOVA, Cebu to OLANGO ISLAND, Cebu THEN,
A combination of suspension and cable stayed bridge (total of 15km)
would be built to connect OLANGO ISLAND, Cebu to JETAFE, Bohol (northwesternmost tip of Bohol)

BUT,
a FEASIBILITY PROJECT would be made first....

POSSIBLY,

MAYOR TOMAS OSMENA's WRONG MOVE
Sun Star Cebu

>>>Mayor Tomas Osmena recently submitted a petition to nullify the cityhood of Tailisay City...

My Reaction
Why did mayor do this? I thought the war over the SRP was over when finally Mayor Tomas decided to give part of the lot to Talisay City and when PGMA granted Cebu City the SRP title. But what is this hot issue today? Is the conflict too personal already? The two neighboring cities shouldn't fight over this for in the long run, both of them will still benefit from the SRP income

AN EXCERPT of Governor Gwen Garcia's
STATE OF THE PROVINCE ADDRESS
(source:: www.cebu.gov.ph)

When Cebu was "discovered" by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, it was truly a discovery, for it opened the eyes of the world to what it did not expect to see.

We had been a bustling trading post in Asia, long before the first of his ships landed, positioned right in the middle of whatwas to become the Philippine Archiepelago.

The island, with its natural port, was a logical destination, and its people, so steeped in the ways of trade and commerce, were its greatest natural resources.

Fast-forward 436 years, and Cebu remains a discovery. It remains that one bright spot, situated right at the geographic center of the archipelago. It is the fastest growing economy in the country, with an average growth rate significantly higher than that of the entire nation, and any other province.

The Province leads 78 other provinces in gross assets, equity and total income.

Frequently been asked: WHY CEBU?

Because there is a reason why we are number one.

There is a reason why this small island leads the entire country in exports of furniture, fashion accessories, carageenan, gifts, toys, and houseware.

There is a reason why Cebu consistently gets the biggest chunk of tourist arrivals yearly, and has become the tourist gateway to Central and Southern Philippines.

There is a reason why Cebu is fast becoming the I.T. and call center capital of the country.

Why Cebu?

Perhaps because the island is naturally situated to become the center of all this action.

It is a natural port. More than 80% of inter-island shipping capacity is based here, on this small island. It is the most accessible place to and from all points in the country, with more domestic air and sea linkages than even Manila.

It is naturally safe. It does not lie within any earthquake zone or typhoon belt. There are no volcanoes on the island.

It has the necessary, well-balanced infrastructure to remain competitive, and to sustain development. And yet, within minutes from its cosmopolitan quarters, you are immediately transported to resort settings and natural wonders.

Why Cebu?

Most of all, because of its PEOPLE. An independent, self-reliant, entrepreneurial culture pervades the island, which makes its people eminently positioned to seize the opportunities that nature presented it.

We have a highly educated workforce geared towards non-agricultural lines, the reason why Cebu has become the center of global attention for services and information technology.

We are naturally peaceful. We have among the lowest crime rates, and the best peace and order records of all cities and provinces in the Philippines.

Why Cebu? The Island. Its People. We have had four centuries of being discovered by the world. And we invite you to discover today - this island, this people.

If you have ever wished you were in Thailand 20 years ago, this is the place for you! For those who know the beauty of the Philippines already, Malapascua certainly lives up to Lonely Planet's description as THE NEW BORACAY but without the crowds.

The diving on Malapscua is truly world class. Located near to the "Golden Triangle", the so-called origin and center of coral life in the world, Malapascua boasts a huge diversity of marine life. We have so much here: big fish, macro, wrecks, and corals. Rough Guide put "Diving in Malapascua" number 17 on its list of "Top 30 Things to do in South-East Asia".

We are the only place in the world where the magnificent thresher sharks can be seen on a daily basis. For this reason Malapascua has been named one of the top 10 shark dives in the world.

Michael, METRO CEBU comprises of:
the cities of:
>Cebu City
>Mandaue City
>Lapu Lapu City
>Talisay City
and the urban municipalities of:
>Naga
>Minglanilla
>Cordova
>Consolacion
>Liloan

Danao City and Toledo City is not part of the Metropolitan area as it is far apart from the urban core which is Cebu City.

Okay I get it, but when the municipalities I mentioned earlier will be citi-ized, maybe these cities would be included in Metro Cebu already since geographically, they would be connected. :)

a month or 2 ago, the Department of Energy has started digging over Tanon Strait to discover if the rumors, that oil is bountiful in the area, was true. The digging is over and this rumor is indeed true.
---
based on the investigation, more than a million barrels of oil can be utilized from this site.

i hope this oil can immediately be utilized to stop the further increase of RP oil prices.

Park Lane Int’l Hotel Cebu set to open 100 rooms by October

International hotel chain, Park Lane International Hotel Cebu will open up 100 rooms this coming October, as the construction of the P700 million hotel project of Cebu-based Five Power Venture Development is nearing completion.
The entry of Park Lane Cebu has brought good news to the tourism industry player in the province, as it is currently suffering from room shortage that hold off volume of tourists arrivals both foreign and domestic visitors.

Park Lane Cebu is the fourth international hotel chain to enter in Cebu, joining international names operating here, like Cebu City Marriott Hotel, ShangriLa Mactan Island Resort, and Cebu Hilton Resort and Spa.

Park Lane International Hotel Cebu general manager Mars Benitez said the hotel has to hasten the initial commercial operation of the 100 rooms before the holding of Advertising Congress this coming November.

The 26-story Park Lane Cebu is scheduled to be in full operation, and open up the total 220 business class hotel rooms early next year, Benitez said.

The four-star Park Lane Cebu is built in a 2,950 square meter area right across the Cebu Business Park. Benitez said the hotel building would be built to have a total room capacity of 400. However, it will initially operate 220 rooms in the next few years.

“Our long term plan is to open the 400 rooms, as the building is built to this capacity. But, in the meantime, we will be opening first the 220 rooms,” he said.

Currently, he said the construction is already touching off the interior finishing, so that it could already accept guests by October this year. Tentatively, he added that soft opening is set on the first or second week of October.

Park Lane Hotel in Cebu, will be the first hotel to be built in the last few years, after Hilton Resort in Mactan Island started its construction in 1998.

Tourism players welcome this development saying this is good news for Cebu, as the province is currently suffering from hotel room shortage amid the growing tourists.

Several efforts were initiated both by the private and government sectors to invite capitalists to invest in hotel project in Cebu, as business potential is very promising.

To date, Cebu can only offer a little over 6,000 hotel room accommodations. The room shortage is one of the barriers why Cebu can’t take off to achieve its target of 5 million arrivals in the next five years.

International tourism experts recently told Cebu tourism players that the five million tourist arrival target in the next five years is unrealistic and too ambitious considering that the province is facing room shortage problem.

“Five Power Ventures Development Corporation, has considerably contemplated on its purpose of constructing a Hotel and making sure that it shall provide a venue and facility that will make Cebu as another Hotel and Convention destination both for local and international markets. This is where the emergence of Parklane International Hotel Cebu,” Benitez said.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Park Lane Hotel is actually tall, 26-storey with 400 hotel rooms? quite massive! will definitely add another skyscraper in the city. :D

Tañon Strait has 1B barrels of oil
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

ABOUT one billion barrels of oil are expected to be recovered from the oil exploration in Tañon Strait between Negros and Cebu islands, a top ranking official of the Department of Energy (DOE) said.

The DOE is hoping that this would help address the present oil "crisis" in the country.

Such exploration however is being protested by fisherfolk not only from Negros and Cebu but also from the Masbate province.

Negros Fishers Forum (NFF), a group of thousands of fishermen from Escalante City, Toboso, Calatrava and San Carlos City in Negros Occidental and Vallehermoso, Guihulngan, La Libertad and Bais in Oriental said the ongoing oil exploration had already caused misery to their fisherman-members.

Most of Negros fisherfolk have already suffered from livelihood and residential dislocation, the NFF added.

This was after the fishing and shell picking along Tañon Strait were banned due to this exploration by the Japan Petroleum Exploration (Japex) and Forum Exploration Incorporated (FEI).

Bannag and Pambansang Lakas ng Mamamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya), on the other hand, lambasted the alleged harassment done against fishermen who will be caught fishing within Tañon Strait.

Nona Espinosa, Banaag's chief correspondent said Negros, Cebu and Masbate fishermen are now often victims of arrest, destruction of their fish pens, strafing, extortion, and robbery of boat engines.

Pamalayaka therefore have seen and foresee the evil and destructive effects of the said exploration among the lives of the Negros and Cebu fishermen.

The NFF, on the other hand, called on the concerned government agencies to help them rescue the fisherfolk and the residents, their fishing grounds, the shores, and the ecology of Negros, Cebu and neighboring islands.

They said there is a need to defend, support and develop the local fishing industry.

They also said there is a need to protect and ensure that the Visayan sea will be the fishing ground of local, this disallowing and prohibiting foreign therefrom.

Save the fishing industry, the fishing grounds, the seas and the natural resources in the country. (With reports from Sunnex)

its really awesome. Cebu's doing good because it's learning Manila's mistakes. lets just say Cebu and MM have almost the same land area but when it comes to population, MM alone has almost 10 Million people but Cebu island barely has 2.2M. if the province will strive harder and continue to play the cards right, it will reinforce the region's position as Asia's next great economic miracle. :okay:

RP guvs to visit Cebu today to talk on federalism

Governors from 79 provinces all over the country are in Cebu today to talk more about federalism.

With that, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia is taking the opportunity to raise federalism as one issue that could be used against the move to break up Cebu.

She said the governors decided last Aug. 11 to have today’s special meeting on federalism, after receiving suggestions on the issue from other sectors, “mostly from the academe.”

“Perhaps it’s also time for those of us who are actually involved in this business of governance to carefully sift through the issues, evaluate the impact of federalism on us provinces, and perhaps come up with a possible model for federalism that takes into consideration existing political infrastructure and bureaucracy,” Garcia said yesterday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

excerpts from the article:

+ With the many promised gains federalism brings, lawmakers should look at the cost federalism will have on poorer provinces that may not be able to stand on their own.

+ “We go back to the basic argument, why break up Cebu? We are strong as it is because we are one. Look at the poorer provinces and realize that these are in fact poor because they are small new provinces that were hastily created and now must try to cope,” said Cebu Gov. Garcia.

+ “Why are these provinces poor? Because they are small. Why are they small? Because they broke up from what used to be an existing province. They were dismembered, we have del nortes, del surs and occidentals left and right... So maybe, perhaps, small provinces can start thinking about re-integrating and becoming whole once again,” she added.

^^ another thing that contributes Cebu's success is... they mind their own business. Cebu doesn't drag Manila down just to gain interest. instead, they take it as a challenge and offer alternatives rather than directly competing with other cities.

THE GAISANOS, Ayalas of the South
Little is known about the Gaisano family of Cebu, but in the Visayas where their shopping malls are a pervasive presence, they are known as the "Ayalas of the South."

Like many Filipino business clans, the retail chain was founded in the 1970s by the family matriarch, Doña Modesta Gaisano, who opened a small restaurant-cum-shop on the ground floor of a rented house in Colon, Cebu. The shop later became the White Gold Department Store, predecessor of the Gaisano malls.

Doña Modesta's five sons — David, Stephen, Henry, Victor, and John — helped her transform the business into a retail giant. In 1981, after the death of the matriarch, the corporation that ran the White Gold department stores was split into five, as the sons decided to go their separate ways.

The family's mall chains are now run by the second-generation Gaisanos and their cousins. Stephen Gaisano, Jr., son of Stephen Sr., operates the Gaisano Country Malls in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro. John Gaisano, Jr., president of the Davao Chamber of Commerce and Industry, runs the Gaisano Ilustre in Cebu, while the other cousins are involved in other mall-related businesses.

The family's flagship firm is the DSG Sons Group, Inc. (which stands for David S. Gaisano Sr.), which owns and operates the four biggest malls in Mindanao. In the late 1980s, the group opened stores in Digos, Tagum, General Santos City, and Davao City.

^^ Yup! if u noticed, White Gold's logo is a G which indicates a Gaisano-operated mall. Robinson's Malls are owned by the Gokongwei's, pure-blooded Cebuanos. :D

Yah, all buildings with the "R" signage are owned by Robinsons Land Co, which is a subsidiary of JG Summit Inc. including Crowne Plaza in Robinsons Galleria complex but i don't have any info with regards to who is operating the hotel, the shares and all that stuff. :) i'm confused with that hotel by the way. others call it Galleria Regency Suites (or is it the corporate tower on the other side?). it could be the operator or sumthin. the signage on top of that bldg says Crowne Plaza. whatever that is, still part of the Robinsons group hehe.

MR. JOHN GOKONGWEI, JR. ON THE LAUNCHING OF
THE JOHN GOKONGWEI SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT
March 1, 2002
9.00 am - 12.00 pm
Irwin Theatre, Ateneo de Manila University

Good morning.

I am John Gokongwei, Jr. I am not an Atenean but I feel at home with you. Today, at least. Sixty-two years ago, I could not have dreamt of appearing before the Jesuits and their students to tell the story of MY life. I was no more than a student then, at San Carlos University in Cebu, when my father died suddenly. It left me, the eldest, the responsibility of taking care of my mother and five siblings. That was tough for someone who was 13. Creditors had just seized our home and business and I had no experience with earning a living.

But here I am--not all on account of my good looks or charming personality--but because I somehow survived. And when I look back, I know now that I did so because I recognized change when I saw it.

The first change was war. I had turned 15. My mother had already sent my brothers and sister to China where the cost of living was lower. From Cebu, she and I had to make money to send to them.

I turned to peddling. My day began at 5 in the morning. I would load my bicycle with soap, thread, and candles, and then bike to neighboring towns to sell my goods. On market days, I would rent a stall, lay out the goods from the bike, and make about 20 pesos a day, enough for me to survive and to buy even more goods for next time. Those days, you might call my Bicycle Age.

Interesting story of JG there. I didnt know he went to San Carlos diay. Its very impressive to see Cebu booming with lots of construction these days esp that hotel in Osmena Blvd. Hey do you guys know if that Lucio Tan building is still alive?
