Sinjin P. June 22nd, 2006, 02:41 PM Maybe its like the WELCOME sign at Jone's Ave, where they will let vines grow on it.
Yes, I've noticed that some letters now have vines. But will it remain like that? Wala bang lights or whatever? :D
MarkiiBoi June 22nd, 2006, 02:57 PM ^^ obviously its not finished yet. You woudn't want our visitors to see an ugly entrance to a great city, now would you? SO for sure that is what's in the mind of our city planners. :D
brodix June 22nd, 2006, 03:07 PM maybe its the one beside Offroads coffee which they said will house the new Sykes.
that makes google earth very useful in helping us locate those developments.
MarkiiBoi June 22nd, 2006, 03:10 PM your right brod. google earth has now become an indispensable here at SSC, especially in locating unfamiliar places or establishments.
LordCarnal June 22nd, 2006, 03:50 PM maybe its the one beside Offroads coffee which they said will house the new Sykes.
I passed by there a while ago. I wasn't able to take pics because I was driving..
It's a huge building, pwede pang CBP or Asiatown... They're using steel frames (I-beams), the structure has been assembled already, I think it was around 8-9 floors...
dive-cebu June 22nd, 2006, 03:54 PM ^^ that's amazing! guys, please take some pics para naa na say maglaway!!! bai arnold, wa ko kita sa ANC ganina... ni unsa man si gleisner?
MarkiiBoi June 22nd, 2006, 03:56 PM ^^ the land there is cheaper, that's why.

dive-cebu June 22nd, 2006, 03:59 PM ^^ precisely. by the way, asa man nag hold ug office ang sykes as of now? i only know that theyr in mandaue area.
MarkiiBoi June 22nd, 2006, 04:01 PM ^^ yep only in Mandaue.
dive-cebu June 22nd, 2006, 04:02 PM what building in particular bai? would u know?
MarkiiBoi June 22nd, 2006, 04:11 PM in mandaue? i dont even know where it is. :D
LordCarnal June 22nd, 2006, 04:12 PM ey anyone watched Private Conversations in ANC a while ago?
Michael Gleissner was interviewed.. Bigfoot's performance is impressive man diay.. The setting of the show was in Hilton.. I guess Boy Abunda interviewed two personalities in the same place and time.. Last week, Manny Osmeña of Hilton was also featured in the same show, now it's Gleissner...
They have a movie which was shot in Hongkong with hollywood actors, and all the post-production work is being done at the IAFT in Mactan. The title of the movie is "ireversi" and will be shown next year February 2007. A premier will also be held in the Philippines.. Tapos weeks ago, the hollywood actors (mga low profile actors siguro, hehehe) stopped over in Mactan for a break in IAFT and in Hilton..
Michaeil Gleissner said that he will also help in the revival and eventual "globalization" of the movie industry in the Philippines. He also stressed out that Filipinos should strive hard to produce movies that can be at par with Hollywood given the fact that we have the best directors that are globally competitive (Boy Abunda mentioned that a hollywood actors asked him why Filipino directors didn't penetrate hollywood like what is being done by Hongkong and Indian directors, when in fact our directors were better than some of them). He also said that even Thailand was able to produce such movies so why can't we...
He also added that we have an advantage over the other SEA countries given the fact that we Filipinos speak English thus there's no reason why we can't produce "english movies" (to be exported worldwide). Our ability to speak english was also a huge factor why Gleissner set-up his film school and studio here in the Philippines instead of in other SEA countries. He said that Thailand might have a slight advantage in some facilities but making a movie would end up very costly because one would need interpreters..
Asked why in Mactan, he said that it's because of its proximity to Hilton and Shangri-La (where guest actors especially if they come from hollywood can easily be billeted) and to the airport (so that the delivery of the production facilities to/from Mactan to/from other countries where the movie is shot will be easier and more effecient)...... Judging from this, I guess it might be impractical for him to build a studio at the SRP. :colgate: so better to expand the existing facility if the need arises...
MarkiiBoi June 22nd, 2006, 04:18 PM ^^ Good for Gleissner. Well he can still build studios at SRP, provided that he will finance the tunnel under the mactan channel and a road that will go straight to the airport. :D
dive-cebu June 22nd, 2006, 04:18 PM Judging from this, I guess it might be impractical for him to build a studio at the SRP. :colgate: so better to expand the existing facility if the need arises...
but then if a 3rd bridge that will connect mactan to cebu (srp) will be built, i think michael will reconsider putting up a facility in srp.
fundraiser June 22nd, 2006, 04:20 PM sykes? naa sa higway mandaue, sa may BIR, sudlonon tapos walang name na sykes. pa misteryo sad sila. i saw that u/c bldg at offroads coffee weeks ago. dako sad na building. siguro yun na ang new sykes or it could be another I.T. building. madamo nanaman maiinggit sa cebu.
LordCarnal June 22nd, 2006, 04:21 PM ^^
By the way, for all his commitments to the Filipinos and for all his huge contributions and "proposals", Boy Abunda joked that Gleissner should run for president of the Philippines and that he will really vote for him..
LordCarnal June 22nd, 2006, 04:22 PM ^^ precisely. by the way, asa man nag hold ug office ang sykes as of now? i only know that theyr in mandaue area.
HGV Arcade.... It's within the Innodata Compund, the former Duty Free Philippines building...

this was mentioned by a forumer from another forum that it will be the new building for Sykes.. the construction is very fast coz they're using steel framing for their building.. would you believe it only took the workers 15 days to assemble those framings upto the 6th floor.. this was what my friend told me after he had a talk with the contractor..
update:
waterfront hotel could be undergiong minor renovation probably a new paint job coz i saw scaffoldings being assembled at a portion of the hotel.. could be part of the hotel's preparation for the ASEAN summit..

Jakosalem Street (Ramos Market area) and the street connecting Jakosalem with F.Ramos street is also being overlayed..
An information billboard has been put in front of Jollibee (beside McDo Jones) and it says that this project was made possible by Congressman Raul V. del Mar.. Some people in the media dubb him as the "infrastructure congressman" for having so many infrastructure projects compared to his southern counterpart (Cong. Cuenco of South District).
Regarding Bigfoot in CBP, no mention of it bai because the show was all about IAFT.

LordCarnal June 22nd, 2006, 05:16 PM del Mar is North District, Cuenco is South District..
All you have to do is to draw a boundary in Capitol.. Divide it into two. South is Cuenco's, North is del Mar's..
I think the Osmeña Boulevard from Capitol to Fuente is the boundary between north and south district.

the problem here is after several layers of asphalt the road would end up much elevated than the sidewalk if not the lots along the road.. this is the reason why some residences are flooded during heavy rains.. dapat unta ang floorline sa balay mas elevated sa dalan para dili ka sulod ang tubig sa balay.. ive seen this kind of problem in several parts of the city already..

My uncle said that Cebu before was Cuenco country (Senator, Congressman, Governor, Newspaper publisher, and a Bishop were Cuencos).... after which the Osmeñas came and displaced them...
He also mentioned that when Sergio Osmeña came to Cebu (after being in Manila and abroad), he made a discourse at the Railway Station (present site of Emall) and they, including my lolo, brushed elbows with the crowd to hear from a "man" who had the courage daw to fight Mariano Cuenco (before him, nobody dared daw to fight M.Cuenco).
The speech was somewhat like this: (I quote this verbatim from my uncle's mouth)
Sa dihang didto pako sa Manila, gwapo ang dagan sa akong kinabuhi. Usa ako ka dako2x sa delaRama shipping company ug dako ang akong sahod. Pero apan nibalik gayod ako dinhi sa atong dakbayan aron pagtabang sa mga igsoon kong Sugbuanon.... and then Osmeña daw suddenly exclaimed: "For in Cebu now there's a reign of terror!!!!" (with a heavy stress on the letter r)... M.Cuenco man daw was dubbed as warlord like Durano.. I dunno what is being meant by this...
dive-cebu June 22nd, 2006, 05:46 PM ^^ well, just like cities, influential people have their "glory days" also... now and then are totally different, but some people have a hard time deciphering the difference between the 2... esp those peeps from t**-**t...

mga ingon ana diri bai, ang mga 50-storey building humanon lang ug less than 1 year. while nagsige ug assemble sa mga steel frames sa taas, ang sa ubos sad kay gatiwas sa interior ug finish.
as can be seen on the image below, the lower portion is already complete while more levels are added on top...

mao ni sakto na "the big 4".. haha
LordCarnal June 22nd, 2006, 06:30 PM ^^I think it's a fact that Cebuanos alone cannot sustain these big malls, coz as what I've observed, Cebuanos are occational mall goers... we only visit malls if we need to buy something. IMO, in Ayala for example, if we will conduct a survey, I think it would show that there would only be less than 50% Cebuano shoppers and more than 50% of them are visitors both foreign and local BUT Cebu as a destination of diffrent variety is one big factor that Cebu can sustain a number of bigger malls. There are several mall proposals that we read in diffrent articles that only shows mall owners are confident of Cebu's malling industry. Sa ako gani tan aw, Cebu is in the uptrend karon if we speak of mall locators that they are closely competing, with other locators planning to build more huge malls herein Cebu. The more visitors to flock Cebu, more malls will rise.
Several rich families in Dumaguete, Ormoc, Maasin and Tagbilaran shop here in Cebu through fastcrafts that leads them to Cebu in abbout 2 hrs at early morning, back @ late afternoon. Tourists are the one that sustain Cebu's malls.
Yup, but what I mean is that any new mall should no longer be built in Cebu City because Cebu City's real urban area is so small (due to its terrain which is mostly elevated) even though if it has quite a big land area. What would happen is that the malls would be so close to each other. Right now, Ayala and SM are so close with each other.. And so is Robinsons with Mango Square, and even nearby E-Mall. Also with Gaisano Country Mall and Banilad Town Center..
Maybe they can build it in Mandaue or Lapu-Lapu City (these are still Cebu), there's also a market there. In fact, if they build a mall in Mandaue City or even in Lapu-Lapu, their market wouldn't just be the respective constituents of the city but also the population of the entire Metro itself (2 million++ for the entire metro).

Filinvest lines up more projects
FOR CEBU By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 06/23/2006
Aside from its recent P4 billion ultra high-end resort village Seascapes, the Filinvest Group has lined up several projects in Cebu for the next few years.
"We have a couple more of projects [in Cebu] in the pipeline," said Joji Gotianun Yap, president of Filinvest Development Corporation.
The Gotianuns whose family roots originated from Cebu, is now coming back to introduce more residential, or may it be commercial developments, as Cebu is getting more attractive for these kinds of investments.
In an interview with Yap, she said the family has decided to convert its ancestral home located in Lahug, right across the Cebu Business Park (CBP), into a commercial development.
"It is quite a big property, we are still conceptualizing what is the right project for that area," she said.
The family's 4,000 square-meter ancestral property located beside East West Bank in Archbishop Reyes Avenue branch, may be transformed into a high-rise, mixed-use building, not necessarily a condominium, she said.
"Our core competency is into residential," she said although, the company has several diversified projects like banking (East West Bank) , shopping centers, central business districts, high-rise offices, and condominiums, recreational farms, leisure clubs, industrial estates and an information technology park.
In Cebu, Filinvest Group has introduced several residential projects like the Corona del Mar in Talisay City, Aldea del Sol (affordable housing), and Mactan Tropics in Lapu-Lapu City, Yap said the company is prioritizing investments in the residential projects in Cebu, over commercial or shopping mall development.
Earlier, Cebu Investment and Promotion Center (CIPC) managing director Joel Mari S. Yu announced that Filinvest has expressed interest to develop a commercial project at inside the 300-hectare South Road Properties (SRP).
Yap said the SRP plan is not yet final, but is part of the company's considerations in pouring more projects for Cebu. "Not necessarily a mall," she said, adding that it could be a commercial office building development.
"We are looking at different opportunities around, nothing is definite yet," she stressed.
The company's newest project in Cebu, introduced by the Filinvest Leisure group, the 12-hectare Seascape project is the biggest (in terms of investment) project so far being built by the company in the country.
She added that the company has recognized the tourism boom in Cebu, and she believes that this is the right time to invest this kind of project in Cebu.
Filinvest chairman Andrew Gotianun Sr., who has a Cebuano lineage, has hand-picked the location for this biggest and most expensive project ventured by the leisure group, located in Barangay Dapdap, in Mactan Island.
Filinvest Development Corporation is one of the largest developers in the Philippines. It developed about 1,500 hectares of land in the last four decades.

Work on hospital for tourists starts in 1st part of ’07
Barring any hitches in negotiations, construction of the first medical center in Asia catering to medical tourists will begin in the first quarter of 2007.
The facility, to be tentatively called the American Specialty Hospital of Cebu, will rise on a two-hectare lot at the Cebu South Reclamation Project (SRP).
The Cardiovascular Hospitals of America (CHA), which will operate the hospital and owns four similar facilities in the United States, will lease the property for 25 years.
Dr. Philip Chua, CHA vice president for Far East operations, said the facility will cost about P1 billion.
Chua was among the speakers in yesterday’s Health and Wellness Forum at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino as part of InTourPreneur 2006, one of the events of the Cebu Business Month.
Services
Aside from its state-of-the-art equipment, the hospital will be accredited by the Joint Commission International and will honor international health insurance providers.
Chua said the hospital will be a “small” one – at least 30 beds – to ensure a fast turnover of patients.
That way, the patients can still enjoy the other components of the package they have availed themselves of as medical tourists, Chua added.
The hospital will also offer services popular among medical tourists, specifically open heart, cosmetic, eye and dental surgeries.
While they will be hiring locals for manpower, Chua said their medical team will be composed of professionals who are trained and licensed in the United States.
He also assured that while they will cater mostly to tourists who can afford the services, they will accept charity cases in coordination with various government and nongovernment agencies.
Negotiations
Chua told Sun.Star Cebu that they are still negotiating with both the national and local governments for various concessions, which will include, among others, the site where the hospital will rise and tax exemptions for being a pioneer in the medical tourism industry.
Chua, who is also chairman of cardiovascular surgery of the Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital, however said they have at least three concerns that need to be addressed before going full blast in the construction.
These include return of investment, peace and order, and corruption in politics. (RCT)

Garcia cites Cebu’s edge as a top investment area
By MARS W. MOSQUEDA JR.
CEBU CITY - Citing the many advantages of Cebu, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia urged yesterday foreign and domestic investors to pour in more investments in the province.
During her speech that opened yesterday the InTourPreneur 2006 of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), Garcia presented the different reasons why investors "should invest in this province’s future."
"We account for the bulk of the industrial and service activities in the Visayas. Our major manufacturing industries such as furniture, shipbuilding, fashion accessories, electronics and semi conductors are growing at a rate of 5.5 percent," said Garcia.
She also said that the major service industries such as tourism, business process outsourcing, call center, and other IT-related services have registered a 6.2 percent growth rate this year and is continuously rising.
Cebu, now getting for more than 60 percent of tourist arrivals in the country, is also acknowledged as the tourism capital of the Philippines, is fast becoming the hub for information and communications technology and ICT-enabled industries in Central Visayas.
No less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo hailed Cebu for being the favorite destination in the country of foreign tourists particularly Koreans and Japanese.
The President plans to boost the development of Central Philippines with Cebu as the center as the nation’s international tourism area.
"More than anything else that is right about Cebu, it is our unity that drives this province forward. Whether it is to determine our country’s political future, or to decide this province’s economic direction, Cebu speaks with one voice," Garcia said, lashing at the proponents of plans to divide the province into three provinces.
Garcia opened the "InTourPreneur 2006," a three-day conference and exhibit that marks the 11th year of the Cebu Business Month at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
The activity is spearheaded by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, together with the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Tourism.
One of the major components of "InTourPreneur 2006" is the one-day Health and Wellness Forum on June 22 at the Arctic Room 2 of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. This aims to highlight the vibrant growth and abundance of opportunities for business and investments in the health and wellness industry in Cebu for entrepreneurs and investors.
Participants can learn more about Cebu’s emerging health and wellness industry and can be updated on business opportunities in medical tourism, fitness services, and other health and wellness services.

sugbuanon June 23rd, 2006, 06:07 AM but there's not enough space on those areas.. their only option is to build them on the 2 lots across ACC unless they'll demolish a portion of the mall just to accomodate the 2 condos..
MarkiiBoi June 23rd, 2006, 06:10 AM ^^ maybe they will not build it at all. :D

brodix June 23rd, 2006, 07:47 AM Defensor: Give us time to transfer gov’t agencies
By Jolene Bulambot
Last updated 11:07am (Mla time) 06/23/2006
Cebu Daily News
PRESIDENTIAL Chief of Staff Michael Defensor yesterday asked for enough time to transfer the three government agencies that would be affected by the provincial government's plan to lease out its 6.7-hectare lot along Banilad Road in Cebu City.
Defensor told Cebu Daily News that he was not yet aware about it because he had not spoken with Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia about the matter.
But he assured they would not pose any objection although they would ask for enough time to allow the three agencies to put up their new offices first.
“I have no problem. I can understand the requirements of the local government. As long as we can be able to set up our offices, I don't think that would be a complication. We just need time for the transition," said Defensor who was in Cebu yesterday to attend the burial of Hilario Davide Sr., the father of Philippine Ambassador to the United Nations Hilario Davide Jr.
He said it might take over a year for the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), National Food Authority (NFA) and Population Commission (POPCOM) to be relocated and put up their own buildings.
The three agencies and hundreds of residents would be asked to vacate the province-owned land so this would be leased out to raise revenues for the province.
The property, considered as high valued commercial lots, will be advertised for three weeks in both national and local newspapers so Manila-based firms could participate in the bidding to rent the land.
Defensor did not specify where these agencies would be transferred.
He did not also categorically say whether or not Malacañang would ask Governor Garcia to give them sufficient time to prepare for the transfer.
“Maybe it would be time for us to transfer to SRP (South Reclamation Area). We still don't know yet. As long as we could put up a physical office for them to transfer to, I don't think it will take so much time," he said.
Asked how much time they need, Defensor said they might need at least a year and a half to put up a building for each department just like in Pagadian City where some national agencies were asked to vacate from a city-owned lot.
"I know Governor Gwen (Garcia) would make sure also that if and when we do transfer, our physical office should be ready already so that the services that we give to the Cebuanos would not be affected,” he said.
brodix June 23rd, 2006, 07:50 AM a long stretch of prime land will be cleared by then and the cebu threads will have lots of good news to tell the world.
MarkiiBoi June 23rd, 2006, 07:55 AM can the government just build one highrise and put all their regional offices there? i think that would be more cost-efective in the long run. :D
brodix June 23rd, 2006, 08:26 AM can the government just build one highrise and put all their regional offices there? i think that would be more cost-efective in the long run. :D
in my opinion, that will be quite difficult. you don't want the entire building to be like a market place, do you? government offices transact with a big number of people each day and having them altogether under the same roof is a disaster. also, government offices have to be closer to the people to where they are needed most. if they can manage it well and transactions can be done electronically, why not?
ug bombahan usa ka building, patay tanang officials, wala nay mabilin, heheheheheh.
slerz June 23rd, 2006, 09:05 AM ^^actually, before the financial crisis a 40storey building was proposed by Cebu City hall in a lot somwhere in Fuente Osmeña near Elegant Circle in. If I'm not mistaken, upper floors will be for rent. All I can say is sayang then nag dungan sad to sa CKS tower near YMCA.
MarkiiBoi June 23rd, 2006, 09:05 AM ^^ well they have to make one big building to accomodate a big number of people. hehehe.

Special treatment awaits int'l media covering 12th Asean Summit
Philippine Information Agency
Cebu City (June 23) -- Boosting its image as a favorite tourist haven in the country, the Cebu City Government will make sure that the expected over 1,000 foreign media covering the 12th Asean Summit come December will be amply treated with the best of what Cebu has to offer in the areas of entertainment, delicacies, site tours and beaches.
In a presentation by the city local government unit in a recent coordination meeting of the 12th Asean Summit National Organizing Committee (NOC) and the Cebu Organizing Committee (COC), among the activities planned for the international press include optional tours to various resorts and city tour showcasing heritage sites and landmarks in Cebu City.
Among the places in Cebu City earmarked for the tour sites are the Capitol Provincial Building, Fuente Osme?a, Pari-an, Casa Gorordo, Sto. Ni?o, Magellan's Cross and Fort San Pedro.
Mall tours is also included so the foreign media can buy their 'pasalubongs.'
The city is also planning to write to the different establishments based in the city such as wine and coffee shops, high-end restobars, disco bars, health spas among others to give special discounts to the foreign media during their entire stay here, according to Nagiel Banacia, city hall public information officer.
Banacia said the media tours are optional because they understand that the main reason why they are in Cebu is to cover the summit.
Banacia further said that Mayor Tomas Osme?a believes that giving special treatment to foreign media will enhance our image more as a top international tourist destination in the Philippines as an impressive impression of Cebu can be given free advertisements abroad through their coverage.
The foreign press will be treated like part of the delegation, Banacia bared.
Although foreign press will be given special treatment, Banacia said the rest of the media (national, Cebu-based and provincial media) can also expect similar treatment as not to give rise to discrimination.
Over 2,000 media are expected to cover the summit, which includes foreign press, national, Cebu-based and provincial media.
Countries that will participate in the summit are the Asean nations comprising Brunei, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, and Indonesia. Non-Asean members that have confirmed their participation are China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and France, as guest observer.

i am not worried for the investors because i am certain not one smart investor will get first hand information from a publicly modifiable, knowledge-based resource like wikipedia before he/she decides on a location, so it won't be a threat at all. what is disturbing is the fact that a lot of those innocent people like students get information from the internet, but the fallacious ones.

flesh_is_weak June 23rd, 2006, 06:28 PM Work on hospital for tourists starts in 1st part of ’07
Barring any hitches in negotiations, construction of the first medical center in Asia catering to medical tourists will begin in the first quarter of 2007.
(RCT)

fundraiser June 23rd, 2006, 08:21 PM Cebu’s ‘miracle’ can pull economy
Replicating Cebu’s economic growth in other areas in the country would free the Philippines from the financial crisis it is facing now, said Vivienne Tan, founder of Entrepreneurs School of Asia (ESA).
“Cebu’s economic mi-racle is acknowledged as the country’s model for growth.
So, imagine, if Cebu’s progress is duplicated all over the country, I guarantee you, in three years, we would have completely turned around the economy of our nation,” she said during the opening of the Entrepreneurship Conference at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel and Casino yesterday.
ESA, one of the pioneering schools on entrepreneurship in the country and in Asia, plans to expand its operations in Cebu.
“Cebu’s culture of creativity and innovation, blessed with the presence of many entrepreneurial role models is the perfect environment for ESA,” said Tan, daughter of Philippine Airlines magnate Lucio Tan.
New ground
“I am really looking forward to establishing ESA in the same area that influenced my father’s entrepreneurial spirit,” she said.
“In many ways, my father is a Cebuano. I hope to strike new ground, while returning to his roots. Hopefully, I (will) humbly help enhance the place, my father once called home.”
Tan said her father is not the only successful business leader to trace his roots to Cebu.
“Three of seven taipans (in the country) spent their boyhood in Cebu. Speaking before some of Cebu’s most outstanding businessmen and entrepreneurs, I would not be surprised if a future taipan is in this room right now,” Tan said.
Tan dismissed the idea that entrepreneurs are born.
“I am in education because I believe that entrepreneurship can indeed be taught. I am in education to prove to you that entrepreneurship is not a birthright of the few,” she said.
The entrepreneurship conference is one of the activities of InTourPreneur 2006. (JBN)

naay daghan resources ana sa internet. one of which is:
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm
you can be traced, beware! an ip address can also be a literal address, your location for that matter. the ip address is not just a randomly-generated combination. a designated body keeps a database of possibly a majority of those series of numbers and dots, and the more descriptive form, the domain name. even your network hardware has its own unique address.
well, no one bothers you if you don't go beyond the norms. it is not the usual business of a sound and regular individual to track those ip addresses, unless of course someone does something bad, to mention, indiscriminately changing wikipedia information with selfish and evil intentions.

sugbuanon June 24th, 2006, 04:38 AM Cebu needs right services for medical tourism
Cebu has the potential of earning billions of pesos if it starts tapping opportunities for it to become a medical tourism site in the country.
More importantly, stakeholders in the industry should also start addressing numerous concerns that usually affect a medical tou-rist’s decision to consider coming to the province.
Medical tourism is defined as a package that involves providing hassle-free and efficient world-class medical care at a lesser cost and a tropical vacation to pamper patients and their families.
Under this concept, a patient communicates with the physician and is given special travel arrangements and hotel or shopping discounts. Upon his arrival, hospital personnel will pick him up at the airport and take him to a beach resort or hotel to rest.
The patient stays in the resort until he needs to go to the hospital. Once given a clean bill of health, he or she will be taken to the airport.
But two medical practitioners said in a recent forum that while Cebu has all the amenities and resources to become the top medical tourist spot in the country, addressing these concerns should be prioritized.
Accredited
Dr. Philip Chua, one of the speakers during Thursday’s Health and Wellness Forum, said the primary issue to be considered is the health care coverage of medical tourists.
Chua said medical tourist centers here should be duly accredited for them to honor international health service providers.
Chua is vice president for Far East operations of the Cardiovascular Hospitals of America and chairman of the cardiovascular surgery of the Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital.
He also highlighted the need for government to make Cebu an “enabling and tempting environment.”
To do this, Chua cited the need for attractive incentives, such as tax exemptions and reduced tariff on medical equipment, considering that the country’s political situation is not conducive for business.
Chua also suggested that both the national and local governments should also start launching programs in target countries to lure medical tourists.
He, however, said local government officials are taking steps to promote medical tourism.
In another talk, Dr. Alfonso Amores identified communication, fund transfer, travel and hotel, quality of facilities, and the nursing, paramedical and medical professionals as among the issues that should be addressed before the government goes full-blast in pursuing the medical tourism industry.
Amores is the chief executive officer of the Cosmetic Surgery Center of Asia.
Other concerns
He said medical tourist facilities should have adequate communications equipment to hasten consultation with the patients.
Stakeholders should also draw mechanisms on how to go about the payment for the services to be availed of by the medical tourists, as most of these services are paid before the patient comes to the country.
Fund transfers include cash, bank transfers, e-commerce and checks.
As for travel and hotel, Amores said airports should have hospitality lounges and transportation, while hotels should have innovative accommodations and arrangements.
Amores also mentioned the need to have a comfortable waiting room, which he said is the most important part of a physician’s office. Other doctors’ facilities include laboratory facilities and out-patient surgicenters.
As for medical practitioners, Amores said it is important for hospitals to find out where its staff is trained and certified as this affects the quality of service rendered.
While there are downsides to medical tourism, Chua said its boom will surely improve the country’s health care system—one basic service that is perceived to have been neglected. (RCT)

brodix June 24th, 2006, 08:48 AM ‘Entrepreneur revolution’ needed for hyper-growth
By Regina Aguilar
Last updated 06:27am (Mla time) 06/24/2006
Cebu Daily News
TO achieve economic hyper-growth, the country needs an “entrepreneur revolution”.
This was stressed by Vivienne Tan, daughter of taipan Lucio Tan, in her keynote address during the Entrepreneurship Conference held yesterday at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
Instead of political issues, focus must be on the education of the youth to become quality entrepreneurs, she said.
“More entrepreneurs mean more jobs and more investments”, she added.
“To attain true progress and development of our country, we need another revolution. Not a green revolution, not an Edsa or People Power Revolution but instead an entrepreneur revolution.”
Speaking before a jam-packed crowd, Tan disputed the popular notion that only the Chinese could be successful entrepreneurs.
“Entrepreneurship is not a birthright of a few. I do not believe entrepreneurship is a monopoly of a few who were born entrepreneurs,” she said.
Tan, whose famous father did not have a college degree but became one of the country's most successful businessmen, said she got into the business of education to prove that successul entrepreneurship can be learned.
Among those who attend ed the conference were young businessmen and students from the Entrepreneur School of Asia (ESA), which Tan founded in the Philippines, and high school students from the University of the Philippines-Cebu College.
Tan said ESA, which has campuses in Manila and China, will also be established in Cebu.
ESA is a non-traditional college that focuses on applied learning and provides an environment that could transform creative concepts of students into a sustainable business.
Tan described Cebu as “the province of Ceboom, a province of unrelenting growth.”
Cebu is the perfect environment for ESA, Tan said since it has a culture of creativity and innovation and is “blessed with the presence of many entrepreneurial role models”.
On a personal note, Tan said she was excited for ESA-Cebu as “the area that influenced my father’s entrepreneurial spirit.”
“ In many ways, my father is a Cebuano. I hope to strike new ground, while returning to his roots. Hopefully, I may humbly help enhance the place my father once called home,” Tan said.

i dunno whats with these titles but in my opinion cebu should just be called cebu with no titles attached.. cebu dont need any title to prove to the world that cebu is this or that.. bout the "charm of asia" title, cebu still has a long way to go to deserve the title.. there are more cities out there [asia] that are far more progressive, vibrant and charming than cebu.. also the title sounds so gay.. what about cebu: ang pambansang kama-o ng pilipinas.. diba macho kaayo paminawn.. hehe

flesh_is_weak June 24th, 2006, 11:57 AM i've also noticed the other provinces 'hatred' towards cebu, its as if cebu has been a party to their demise or economic stagnation...
as for those illongos who want the title for their city back, well i cant balme you...but then again, if you take a look at it, cebuano leaders and even the residents have done a llot in the past few years to show that cebu really does deserve that moniker...if you'd only follow that example and start proving themselves, then you might as well have the honor of deserving that title, if not another even better title...
filipinos everywhere should be grateful to cebu...cebu is the ever youthful and vigorous heart of the country that constantly pumps the lifeblood of eco-tourism with the promise of economic development, this keeps the rest of the country alive...if not for the cebu boom, the philippines would be in a far much more worse situation...

fundraiser June 24th, 2006, 03:06 PM Cebu eyed as paradise for medical tourism
WITH its strategic location, modern transportation and investment-attractive environment , Cebu can become the paradise of medical tourism, a multi-billion dollar business in today’s health care industry.
This was the glowing assessment of Dr. Philip S. Chua, chairman of cardiovascular surgery of Cebu Doctor’s University Hospital during the Health and Wellness Forum of Intourpreneur 2006 in celebration of Cebu Business Month.
Chua said Cebu has already been chosen as the site for the construction of the American Specialty Hospital. The state-of-the-art medical center is expected to encourage millions of foreigners and Filipinos to retire in the Philippines.
Chua, who is also the vice president for Far East Operations of Cardiovascular Hospitals of America (CHA), said that CHA has offered to invest in this venture that could make a positive impact on the whole nation.
Dr. Alfonso Y. Amores, chief executive officer of the Cosmetic Surgery Center of Asia, cited factors that promote medical tourism in the Philippines: the Filipinos' hospitality, the country's strategic location and westernized environment, the quality of medical professionals and the people’s fluency in English.
At his center, Amores said 90 percent of his patients are foreigners.
Amores, however, said the government has to address the following needs to develop medical tourism, such as communications, fund transfer arrangements, travel and hotel facilities, the quality of facilities, nursing and other paramedical professionals and medical professionals.
Target markets for medical tourism are overseas Filipino workers, Australian market, Island States in the Pacific, Middle Easterners, Taiwanese, Koreans and Japanese among others, according to Elizabeth Nelle, director of The Office of Product Research and Development (OPRD) of the Department of Tourism.
Frances Marie B. Bumanlag of the Asian Eye Institute (AEI) said medical tourism in the Philippines would prosper if there is close collaboration between the private and public sector.
“The government should be the enabler and the private sector the driver in promoting health care in the country,” she said.
AEI started in 2003 and boasts of a steady growth of two to three percent in foreign-based patients, daily inquiries through internet and phone calls and referrals from foreign patients.

sugbuanon June 25th, 2006, 07:59 AM Cebu’s economic growth a recipe to free RP from crisis
CEBU CITY – Replicating Cebu’s economic growth as a recipe would bail out the Philippines from its financial crisis in three years, a leading businesswoman said here.
Vivienne Tan, founder of Entrepreneurs School of Asia (ESA), said Cebu's monumental success could be adopted to move the country forward.
”Cebu’s economic miracle is acknowledged as the country’s model for growth. So, imagine, if Cebu’s progress is duplicated all over the country, I guarantee you, in three years, we would have completely turned around the economy of our nation,” said Tan, daughter of billionaire Lucio Tan, owner of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) and the Tan Group of Companies.
Ms. Tan made the statement during the opening of the Entrepreneurship Conference at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel and Casino on Friday.
ESA, one of the pioneering schools on entrepreneurship in the country and in Asia, plans to expand its operations in Cebu.
”Cebu’s culture of creativity and innovation, blessed with the presence of many entrepreneurial role models is the perfect environment for ESA,” Tan said.
”I am really looking forward to establishing ESA in the same area that influenced my father’s entrepreneurial spirit,” she said.
“In many ways, my father is a Cebuano. I hope to strike new ground, while returning to his roots. Hopefully, I will humbly help enhance the place, my father once called home,” she said.
Tan said her father is not the only successful business leader to trace his roots to Cebu.
”Three of seven taipans in the country spent their boyhood in Cebu. Speaking before some of Cebu’s most outstanding businessmen and entrepreneurs, I would not be surprised if a future taipan is in this room right now,” Tan said.
Tan dismissed the idea that entrepreneurs are born.
”I am in education because I believe that entrepreneurship can indeed be taught. I am in education to prove to you that entrepreneurship is not a birthright of the few,” she said.
The entrepreneurship conference is one of the activities of In TourPreneur 2006.

CHI to cater to needs of Asiatown workers
By: Jessica Banzon Natad
Cebu will soon see a miniature of the working world of the West at the Asiatown IT (information technology) Park in Barangay Apas, Cebu City.
According to Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) president Rene Almendras, CHI-subsidiary Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. (CPVDC) will start creating this new environment to suit the lifestyle of the employees in Asiatown in January next year.
"(This new environment will be found where The Village is now located). We will renovate the place beginning next year and create an environment that will allow employees in the zone (especially those working in business process outsourcing companies) to thrive," he said.
"These people are heroes. They bring in dollars to the country. We will complete their lives (by providing them with what they need)," Almendras said.
Earlier, he said BPOs are the "light at the end of the tunnel" that will save the country's dwindling eco-nomy.
"The Philippines, in general, is one of the countries known for potential sites for BPO projects. The others are India, which accounts for 57 percent of the world's BPO supply, China and Malaysia, among others," Almendras said.
With regards to The Village renovation, he said CPVDC will construct a commercial center, which will contain stores that could operate in accordance to the working time of the Asiatown employees.
Alive
"We are already talking with merchants, such as (owners of) coffee shops, restaurants, resto-bars, retail stores that are willing to operate at night or early morning when Asiatown is alive," Almendras said.
Aside from call centers PeopleSupport Philippines Inc. and e-Telecare Global Solutions, business process outsourcing companies, such as the Tsuneishi Group of Companies, NCR Cebu Development Center, Epson Precision (Phils.) Inc., SPI Technologies Inc. and Dash Engineering Philippines Inc. are also operating 24-hours inside Asiatown.
The Village is currently being managed by Runway Ventures.
The company's management contract with CPVDC will end on Dec. 31, 2005.
Increase
Aside from the renovation, the two new buildings, which are now under construction, will also be operational within the year(2006). This will increase Asiatown's gross leasable area by 100 percent, Almendras said.
He said the investments made in the renovation is part of the billion-peso investment the Ayala group of companies plans to pour into Cebu in the next three years.
Ayala celebrated its 17 years of presence in Cebu by establishing Ayala Land Affiliate---------CHI.
Almendras earlier revealed that the conglomerate has invested a total of P7 billion, mostly in its maiden commercial project in Cebu, Ayala Center Cebu and its other property development project, such as Asiatown and Amara residential property within the span of time.

sugbuanon June 25th, 2006, 08:56 PM Cebu economy ‘envy’ of all RP -- PCCI chief
THE Philippine economy is heading toward a bright future, but there is more room for improvement if the government and the private sector will strengthen their partnership, according to a business leader.
“This year started with much optimism, not only for Philippine business but for the general welfare of the entire country, as well,” said Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Donald Dee during the opening of the InTourPreneur 2006 last Wednesday.
He said last year ended on a high note, with a 400-percent increase in investments in stocks, treasury bills and bonds. The stock market also became one of the best performers in Asia, he added.
Performance
He said the peso performed well than other currencies in Asia and was fifth on the list of best performers worldwide.
“Undeniably, all signs pointed towards a better 2006—for the economy and, therefore, for Philippine business,” said Dee.
“However, while we are encouraged by these positive developments, there are still much to be done for business to improve,” he added.
During the opening of the three-day InTourPreneur 2006 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, Dee also praised Cebu for its “robust and teeming economy.”
“Cebu—with its robust and teeming economy—has become the envy of businessmen all over the country,” he said.
Dee said that a cooperation between the government and the private sector is the “only way” that the entire country will be able to reap the benefits of economic growth.
Downstream
“We need to ensure that the beneficial downstream effects will be felt nationwide, and not limited to just a particular segment of the population,” he said.
According to Dee, government and private sector partnership must cover critical issues that are indispensable to further improve the business climate and Philippine economy.
These issues are reforms in the power sector, good governance, international cooperation and trade, small and medium enterprises development, wages and corporate social responsibility.
Dee also mentioned investment promotion as a critical factor in strong economic growth.
“Alone on the domestic front, we do not have sufficient funds to fuel economic growth. We need to turn to our trade and investment allies for further investment expansion—most especially in the critical sunrise industries,” he said.
According to Dee, the country’s sunrise industries are tourism, business process outsourcing, information technology, mining, logistics, telecommunication, transportation and construction.
“(But) we need to project a stable political climate and a consistent implementation of laws and procedures to overcome the marketing challenge in promoting our country as a vital investment hub,” he said.

But anyway, inspite of this, I will just focus my time sa developments sa Cebu specially the ASEAN summit is fast approaching. Excited na ko what will Cebu looks like after all the facelifts. Hawayano June 26th, 2006, 04:46 AM @ic3man25: thanks for posting the beautiful shots showing Cebu from the waterfront all the way up the heights. Honolulu has similar panoramas, but Cebu has the impressively ancient history to top it all off! :)
h3nry June 26th, 2006, 05:14 AM Thanks for that complement.. Even though Hawaii position it self as a certified Worldclass destination. Never the less CEBU is also one.
Thats great about this island It is so very rich with history and culture.
by proud cebuano.
Hawayano June 26th, 2006, 05:20 AM ^^ yeah, the main difference in our history (aside from Honolulu's being so recent) is that the Japanese didn't occupy and demolish our city as they did back in the Philippines. I really like the way Sugbu's city planners are making that coastal road run beneath the historic areas--as long as nothing's damaged in the construction. BTW, I think there may be a sister city relationship between our two cities.
Hawayano June 26th, 2006, 05:29 AM Sorry--I know this is a thread for Cebu, but I thought I'd share some of these pics that show the similarities of our two cities...seacoast and mountains:

Animo June 26th, 2006, 06:11 AM I'm sorry if this is way out of topic but please support this petition for Philippine churches. :)
Thank you very much.
Although we will continuously be collecting signatures for the petition, we will be printing and officially submitting the petition to the CBCP on Monday, July 3 in order for it to be discussed during their semi-annual conference on July 9. So for your signature to be included in the one that will be submitted to the CBCP, please sign the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/cbcp/ on or before June 30.
Please pass this to all your friends. A Filipino society that values and preserves its cultural heritage in order to instill pride of place and strengthen Philippine national identity... we can all make a big difference in our fight to preserve our cultural heritage!

MarkiiBoi June 26th, 2006, 10:37 AM Accenture eyes Cebu for expansion
Business World (Philippines) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge
Cebu City - Accenture Philippines is considering Cebu as a possible expansion site.
Beth G. Lui, country managing director, said she was impressed by the Cebuanos' computer competency and the local government's support to the information technology (IT)-enabled services sector.
"We have also heard that the Cebuanos are hardworking and loyal to their employer," Ms. Lui told participants in InTourPreneur 2006, a tourism and IT conference held last week.
She said a delivery center would be ideal in Cebu.
Ms. Liu earlier told BusinessWorld that they are planning to expand outside the Makati central business district where it is operating six sites. Accenture occupies four floors of the Gateway Mall in Quezon City. In Mandaluyong City, it occupies five floors in Robinsons Cybergate Center (RCC) Tower 1.
The eight facilities, collectively known as the Manila Delivery Center, have more than 8,400 seats and over 75 clients from the US, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Accenture provides business process and IT outsourcing services.
xDieselJockx June 26th, 2006, 10:46 AM Club Ultima Cebu soft opens
IN 2003, J.King and Sons Company Inc. president and chief executive officer Richard King first introduced the concept of Club Ultima, two and a half years later, he delivers the promise.
The 23-storey landmark at the heart of Cebu City is now on soft opening. Full operations will start in August.
“This is what living the good life is all about,” said King.
With some 2,400 members now, Club Ultima offers an innovative concept combining business, pleasure, dining, health and wellness.
Club starts at the 11th floor with hotel suite rooms for members and guests. Club facilities starts at the 15th floor up to the 23rd floor.
Club Ultima features international restaurants, salon, spa, gym, aqua fitness pool, virtual shooting and golf range, automatic mahjong, business center, entertainment area, and wardrobe management.
All these while I thought you guys were saying that club ultima would be a 40 stories high edifice. So, it's actually 23 stories???? Is this going to be the tallest building in Cebu for now?
ashton June 26th, 2006, 11:00 AM The 40 (or is it 38?) storey building is the one in front of it -- the Crown Regency Hotel.. :) am I correct MarkiiBoi? kay diha man gyud ka gapuyo dapita.. hehe

MarkiiBoi June 26th, 2006, 11:04 AM ^^ Club Ultima is Tower II. The one that will soon stand at 38 storeys is Tower I and will house Crown Regency Suites and is under construction in front of Tower II. They are now working on the 24th floor of Tower I.
The tallest buildings in Cebu right now are the two Windland Towers which both stand at 25 floors.

slimer June 26th, 2006, 04:29 PM BTW, regarding the topic wherein low-rise structure will be allowed until this year only in CBP, my friend told me that this is not the case. long before CBP started, they already had a masterplan about it. The Floor Area Ratio is the basis daw. Mao daw naa mga mubo na structure espercially banks kay basin mas gusto nila mo-serve ra sa ila clients and not really to have additional profit.

CBP Building Height Restriction Relaxed
Lot owners at the Cebu Business Park (CBP) can now construct buildings of at least two levels. An amendment in the park's Deed of Restrictions covering building height affords property owners to construct two-storey buildings within a five-year period until 2007.
This development comes as a positive note in the current overall slump in construction due to a depressed property market.
Cebu Holdings, Inc. (CHI), the Ayala Land affiliate responsible for the CBP's development, expects the business park's buildup to continue despite the current difficult economic period.
A provision of the business park's Deed of Restrictions covering building height was amended and approved by the CBP Board in June last year, allowing construction of u201clow-riseu201d buildings.
The proposal to lower the minimum building height from 4 levels to 2 levels within a five-year period enables locators to construct buildings that will suit their own requirements.
The amendment will take effect for five years, from August 2002 to July 2007. Within this period, lotowners can construct buildings of at least 2 levels on their property.
Metrobank was the first to build a 2-storey edifice at the corner of Cardinal Rosales and Mindanao Avenues to house its CBP branch. Other property owners are expected to take advantage of the opportunity before the 5-year period expires.
CBP was developed in 1990 with the vision of creating a well-planned environment and mixed-use community in the heart of Cebu City. To this vision is added the realization of becoming Cebu City's central business district of the 21st century.
Today, more than a decade after its land development, CBP is the premier business and financial district in the city. It is home to local and international banking and financial institutions, as well as offices of distinguished service companies and law firms. At least __ major banks have branches in the business park. One of the country's largest telecommunications company owns and occupies one of the park's high-risers, the Globe Isla Plaza. World-renowned Cebu City Marriott Hotel boasts of a strategic location along Cardinal Rosales Avenue, across City Sports Club Cebu, the only urban resort in the city. The centerpiece of the Business Park is the 9-hectare Ayala Center Cebu, now the preferred shopping and lifestyle destination in Visayas and Mindanao.
The 50-hectare Cebu Business Park is, to date, the single largest urban development project in central and southern Philippines.

Jimbu June 27th, 2006, 04:23 PM Hospital for medical tourists in Cebu
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 11:47am (Mla time) 06/27/2006
A US-based hospital is expanding in Cebu to build the country’s first medical facility catering to local and foreign medical tourists.
“The Cardiovascular Hospitals of America (CHA) will construct a P1-billion medical facility for Cebu,” Dr. Philip Chua revealed last Thursday during the Health and Wellness Forum held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
Chua sits as chairman of the Cardiovascular Surgery Center of Cebu Doctors University Hospital.
The CHA, which has four hospitals in the United States, will call the “state-of-the-art” medical center as the American Specialty Hospital in Cebu.
Cebu was chosen as one of the sites for the hospital’s first Far East operation, Chua said.
A two-hectare lot in the South Road Properties (SRP) is being eyed as the location for the medical facility.
Chua, who also serves as CHA’s vice president for Far East Operations, said that the American corporation is also looking at other areas within Cebu City.
Moreover, the Cebu facility will be accredited by the Joint Commission International, which honors international health-care insurance from the United States.
“This health care coverage is expected to entice millions of overseas Filipinos or Balikbayans and foreigners to retire in the Philippines,” Chua said.
Paradise
In his talk, Chua cited Cebu as a “prospective paradise” for the multibillion-dollar medical tourism industry.
“Cebu has an enabling and attractive environment for both foreign and domestic investors, a requisite for medical tourism,” said Chua.
He also stressed the huge potential of the province to become the modern-day health-care Mecca in the Far East.
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Cebu Provincial director Nelia Navarro earlier said that Cebu has the capability to be the health and wellness hub in the country especially for medical tourism.
“Cebu can offer world-class medical services,” said Navarro.
The province also has complementary health and wellness centers, which currently numbers to more than 200 facilities, she added.
Investors
Chua, in a separate interview, said CHA is also on the lookout for Filipino doctors willing to invest in the medical facility.
Aside from hiring local medical practitioners, the hospital will provide an opportunity for Filipino doctors to acquire shares in the corporation, Chua said.
So far, doctors from Cebu, Bohol, Oroquieta, and Ozamis cities have expressed interest in investing in the hospital, Chua said.
Navarro, on the other hand, said promoting medical tourism in the country would also prevent Filipino medical practitioners from going abroad. /Correspondent Regina Aguilar

slimer June 27th, 2006, 04:53 PM @Jimbu
Sa akong pagkasabot bai kay, naay area wherein mga low-rise ra ang pwede itukod nya naa say para sa high-rise. So kung kato gusto motukod ug low-rise naay area within CBP nga adto sila didto.
Kung ato tan-awn asa gitukod na ang metrobank, unionbank mura makaingon ta nga pang-low rise ra jud na diha dapita. Although that is my personal observation.
Sige lang I'll show him that article para sad makahatag siya ug more deserving explanation hehehe...
dive-cebu June 27th, 2006, 05:00 PM @slimer, i am getting your point bai, but i think my previous post about this topic and that article in 2003 are consistent in a way... and i think my source is also reliable because they are working in the real property division in our company and they're the ones coordinating with cebu holdings people.. the company that im working for man gud bai has been planning to put up a building in cbp this year, but until now wala pa gyud ka start because we cannot dispose of our present building located along gorordo street and maxilom street.. we actually have 2 properties in cbp, the one in front of starbucks (metro parking now, and one vacant lot in front of acc, along archbishop reyes avenue.
