MarkiiBoi August 3rd, 2006, 08:51 AM Three Taiwanese Airlines Scored Handsome Profits in July
Taipei, Aug. 3, 2006 (CENS)--Taiwan’s three leading airline companies—China Airlines (CAL), Eva Airways, and Far East Air Transport—all witnessed considerable profits in July although their revenues were seriously undermined by soaring oil prices in the first half of the year....
...Far East, running in the red in the first half, enjoyed a rise of passenger-carrying rate in the domestic flights in July. Besides, the company has cooperated with Hana, the largest travel agent in South Korea, to jointly explore the tourist market in Southeast Asia. Through the cooperation, the company’s flights to such hot tourist spots as Phuket of Thailand, Cebu of the Philippines, and Angkor Wat of Cambodia all post a high passenger-carrying rate of 99% in average.

Animo August 3rd, 2006, 09:09 PM The Department of Tourism in Region 7 (or Central Visayas) published a beautiful brochure having useful information concerning the four provinces of Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor.
The brochure is impressive. Unfortunately it does not have a name. So I will call it "A 4-in-1 Central Visayas tourism brochure."
Bohol is described as "An Eco-Cultural Paradise"; Cebu is labeled as "The Metropolis of the South"; Negros Oriental is described as "Bounty of the Oriental Seas"; Siquijor has no label, but the brochure shows the province's photo of an old convent in the municipality of Larena, claimed to be the oldest Catholic convent in Asia. Since Siquijor has no label, I will name it Magic Island.
Central Visayas has natural and man-made attractions. Visiting this region is an experience! Most tourists say it is the place for a total experience of RRI -- rest, recreation, and inspiration -- where you find an abundance of nature, history, and culture.
Bohol, described as a quaint limestone island, is the tenth largest island in the Philippines. The island province has amazing natural wonders as well as important historical monuments. It is famous for its cone-shaped Chocolate Hills (almost 500 of them) located in the municipality of Carmen. Bohol is also famous for its unpolluted waterfalls, beaches, virgin forests, caves, caverns, and rivers.
The island is home to the tarsier, so-called smallest monkey in the world although it is not really a monkey. The greatest legacy of Bohol is its colorful history and culture -- it is the site of the longest revolt against Spain led by Boholano chieftain Dagohoy (1744-1829). It is home to 20 colonial churches.
Cebu is where commerce and recreation belnd harmoniously. Called the Queen City of the South, it offers the best of both worlds -- beach fun on stretches of clean, white sand, city convenience in modern shopping malls, discos, and parks. Visitors won't leave Cebu without buying a variety of souvenir items from fashion accessories to dried mango preserves.
Places to visit in Cebu are Magellan's Cross, Basilica Minore del Santo Niño formerly known as the San Agustin Church built in 1565, Fort San Pedro, Taoist Temple, Lapu Lapu Monument in Mactan, Kawasan Falls in Badian, Moalboal Beach Resort, and many other beach resorts and tourist spots.
Negros Oriental is "for those who love nature at its best". Beyond the stretch of its ssugarcane fields, you can see beautiful mountain ranges on one side and a glittering sea on the other. The major attractions include Apo Island, a haven for scuba divers and those who would just do snorkeling. Apo Island can be seen from Dumageute's Rizal boulevard. It is accentuated with crystal clear waters, colorful corals, and rich marine life.
The tourism brochure describes Negros Oriental as an underwater spectacle in motion citing Bais City, the place for dolphin watching, which is a one-of-a-kind experience. There is Mt. Talinis, a challenge for the adventurous hikers who love to discover rare flora and fauna, and verdant forest. Tourists would love to see the Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao in Sibulan. There are caves in Mabinay and some towns in the north. There is also Canlaon Volcano in the north where tourists dare to scale the crater because of its magical effect.
Siquijor boasts of diverse attractions, but specifically the sea with white or yellow sand. Siquijor is a coral island. One really has to go to this smallest island in Central Visayas to affirm what visitors mostly say, "Siquijor heals the spirit of any weary traveler with its peace and tranquility". The island is popular for its folk traditions of healing rituals -- it gets a name as a mystical island paradise. Siquijor is the home of the historical St. Isidore Labradore Church, and the bell tower of St. Francis of Assisi, and the old Cang-isok house (a must-see for those people who love old wooden houses). Also, Siquijor boasts of its butterfly sanctuary where one of the biggest butterflies in Asia is found.

6 property dev’t projs. to rise in Ayala’s CBP
By Malou M. Mozo Sun.Star Correspondent
Six buildings will soon rise on an aggregate area of about 8.5 hectares (85,000 square meters) at the Cebu Business Park (CBP), an official of Ayala Land Inc. affiliate Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) said.
CHI chief operating officer Francis Monera said the six projects are the result of the growing information technology (IT) industry in Cebu and bolster the province’s efforts to become the IT hub in the region.
“Expect more businesses and more traffic in the area,” said Monera, also president of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI).
The six projects are: the 14-story Cebu Towers that will house IT offices; two expansion buildings of Lexmark Research and Development; Tower Palace, a 20-story residential condominium; Pioneer Insurance, an eight-story office; and Security Bank.
“I see more coming up. All they need to do is to submit their plans,” Monera said in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu.
He also revealed that the parcel of CBP lot at the corner of Mactan Road and Samar Loop is the site of a “telecom line-laying project.”
He said more developments are also expected at the Asiatown IT Park.
“Locators are planning on expansion and have bought several lots already,” he said.
He said seven lots at Asiatown IT Park have already been sold. Development projects that will be implemented in the area will include a hotel and a school. He declined to give details, though.
He said there will be “exciting development” at The Village, an entertainment center within the Asiatown IT Park, which was closed for renovation works at the end of last year.
“It (The Village) will be developed into a 24/7 (24-hour) retail and entertainment facility that will cater to the lifestyle of those working in Asiatown IT Park,” he said.
Apart from several call centers like E-telecare, PeopleSupport and Qual-fone, several software development companies such as, MEC, Epson, NCR, Tsu-neishi and Versagra-phics are also located at Asiatown IT.
As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit draws near, Monera said that both Cebu Business Park and Asiatown IT Park will be a major destination.
“We are gearing up for the influx of more people coming from outside Cebu and the Philippines so we are organizing tours for these areas,” he said.
According to Monera, CCCI has formed a team to study the feasibility of having the entire Cebu province declared an economic zone.

Business
A noted economist has said it is possible to declare the entire Cebu province as an economic zone (ecozone).
Economist Cayetano Paderanga said the National Government has already declared as ecozone the five provinces comprising the Calabarzon.
Calabarzon is composed of the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon.
As such, companies qualified to avail themselves of incentives under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority and the Board of Investments are given tax incentives if they locate anywhere in the Calabarzon.
The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has proposed to have the entire province declared an ecozone so qualified companies, regardless of their location in Cebu, can avail themselves of tax incentives. The proposal is seen as a strategy to attract more investors to Cebu.
CCCI president Francis Monera said the chamber has already organized a group that would look into the feasibility of the project. The group has yet to make a report.
Lexmark Research and Development Corp. president and chief executive officer Stan Combs said there are a lot of information technology (IT)companies in Cebu that deserve incentives, but are not able to avail of them because they are not located in ecozones.
These small and medium companies prefer to locate outside IT parks because they cannot afford the cost of locating in one.
Cebu Federation of Rural Banks (CFRB) president Enrique Abellana looks forward to the designation of Cebu as an ecozone.
He said this would give rural areas a fair chance to compete as far as attracting investors with the urban areas.
Despite the possibility, Paderanga said in a recent economic briefing that CCCI's proposal would require discussion with policy-makers as proclaiming an ecozone would mean lost income for the government.
"The Department of Finance will have to consider the income that would be lost in case Cebu will be declared an ecozone," he said.
Earlier, Monera, in explaining the proposal, said that "whatever loss on taxes and revenues the government will incur in making Cebu an ecozone will be offset by a more vigorous economic activity."
Firms located in ecozones enjoy income tax holidays. They also have the option to pay a special five percent tax on gross income instead of national and local taxes. They are required to pay real estate taxes.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, in one of her visits to Cebu, encouraged the CCCI to pursue its plan and to work closely with the Cebu local governments.
"The President said that the Cebu LGUs themselves can help design the incentives," Monera said.
He also said Cebu Gov, Gwendolyn Garcia has showed support to CCCI's endeavor as this would encourage more investors to locate in the province, not only in ecozones such as the Asiatown I.T. (PNA)

Wishbone7054 August 4th, 2006, 04:38 AM I was browsing at a local Barnes and Noble bookstore when I got hold of the July issue of Conde Nast Traveler magazine. It has an article entitled "The Whole-Year, Whole-World Island Finder"... somewhere in the world, at any time of year, there is an island in its prime just waiting for you. But how to find them? Sixty outstanding spots chosen by a team of seasoned travelers. So, for the month of January, prominently highlighted is CEBU, PHILIPPINES, in good company with the islands of Crete, Greece and Vancouver, Canada. Quote: "Chose between the wild Sinulog Festival and the sleepy,Spanish-flavored towns. While somnolence reigns in towns like Carcar and Argao- where the sixteenth century churches date back to the Spanish occupation-the third Sunday of the month marks the end of the Sinulog Festival, when drummers and wildly costumed dancers parade through Cebu City and fireworks cap the nine days of cultural performances, shopping bazaars and general revelry. January is the coolest and one of the driest months of the year on tropical Cebu, making it an ideal time to checkin to the Alegre Beach Resort, which has 40 thatched-roof cabanas amid landscaped grounds adjacent to one of the island's most beautiful beaches. The Shangrila on Mactan Island, a diving destination off Cebu's southeast coast, is a much larger resort that added a 100,000 square-foot spa last year." I was so proud of Cebu,
it made my day!
MarkiiBoi August 4th, 2006, 04:50 AM ^^ Wow! A really really good music to the ears. Conde Nast has really fallen in love with Cebu.
hans boy August 4th, 2006, 04:54 AM 3 Bigfoot Towers in CBP? :eek2:
Actually, mga pre, the old 3 bigfoot tower proposal at the CBP golf driving range was propose way back 2004. But it was thrown at the garbage bin after knowing that Bigfoot's financial assets and capabilities can only build the basements of the 3 towers, which stands 28 for the 1st tower, 38 for the 2nd tower and 48 for the 3rd tower. It's actually called the BIGFOOT CENTER. Who design the 3 BIgfoot Towers? No other than the architect of Imperial Palace, Architect TPJ (Tessie P. Javier). If you have some frens at her firm. Please ask for the perspective of that proposal. It really looks so awesome mga pre. Just help me na lang retrieve that perspective so that we can share it here at SCC Cebu.
I am still finding ways to retrieve it.
Sinjin P. August 4th, 2006, 04:56 AM ^^ That is wonderful... If realized, it would cause a drastic change on our growing skyline!
MarkiiBoi August 4th, 2006, 05:02 AM So bai hans, since it was thrown into the garbage, will Bigfoot still build something at CBP or none at all? :dunno:

Pre, wla na gyud ko knowledge kung mag build pa ang Bigfoot sa CBP. Si ARcht. Tessie P. Javier lang gyud ang nka hibawo ana pre kay cya man gyud ng suki sa Bigfoot. Pero sure ko pre nga ang golf driving range is a property of Bigfoot. In fact way back 2004, gold driving range will be scrap out. But it wasn't pursued since Bigfoot didn't pursue their project that time.

dive-cebu August 4th, 2006, 06:31 AM Businesses launch program to back Mandaue’s projects
Mandaue's business sector has expressed support to the local government’s bid to make the area the “emerging convention city” in the province.
During a press conference yesterday at the San Miguel Corp.’s 1521 conference hall, Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (MCCI) president Eric Mendoza said the MCCI has come up with programs to help the City expedite the realization of the local government’s plan to become a convention hub.
Yesterday, MCCI donated P320,000 to the Mandaue City Government. The money is meant to help in the beautification and landscaping of the Cebu International Convention Center’s (CICC’s) premises.
The construction of the CICC has prompted Man-daue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano to issue Executive Order 17, in which the mayor acknowledges the need to enhance the city’s image as the preferred destination and promote the same image through the conduct of local and international meetings and conferences, investment fora, conventions and exhibitions.
Mendoza said implementation of the programs to help the City face the challenge will start this month, during the Mandaue
Business Month 2006, an annual event in line with Mandaue’s 37th Charter Day celebration.
“As Mandaue City positions itself to meet the demands of global competition, the MCCI endeavors to prepare the business players in both extreme ends of the entrepreneurial development to find their niche and prepare for the continuing progress accelerated by the expected Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) attention,” he said.
He said the theme for this year’s business month celebration is “Building Entrepreneurs by Strengthening the Base.”
Activities—such as, local and international jobs fair, business opportunity fair, business forum and the small and medium enterprise seminar—are all in support of the technical needs of the “base” or the micro and small companies in Mandaue.
MCCI second vice president for external affairs Emma Ramas said a mass transport system project for Mandaue City, which will be funded by the Asian Development Bank, will be discussed in one of the fora.
“(Those who will implement the program) chose to pilot it in Mandaue City among other cities in the country,” she said. (JBN)

ashton August 4th, 2006, 05:06 PM hello, may I confirm that this is July 2006 issue? If so, do you happen to know if they have the best Asian islands for 2006? thanks. . :)
I was browsing at a local Barnes and Noble bookstore when I got hold of the July issue of Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

Gaisano cool despite new Rustan’s store
Metro Gaisano is not threatened by the establishment of a Rustan’s Supermarket at the Ayala Center Cebu (ACC).
In an interview, Vicsal Development Corp. (VDC) president Jack Gaisano said the company would rather have “friendly” competition with a Filipino-owned company than foreign ones.
“It’s okay. As long as it is a Filipino company. The presence of Rustan’s would complement our operation. It would bring more traffic to Ayala,” he said.
VDC is the developer-operator of Metro Gaisano, the anchor store of Ayala Center Cebu.
Rustan’s Supermarket will occupy the entire ground floor of the mega-complex, Ayala Center Cebu’s expansion building, which is under construction.
In an earlier interview, Cebu Holdings Inc. president Rene Almendras said Metro Gaisano and Rustan’s would not compete with each other as they have different target markets.
Rustan’s used to occupy Mango Square mall on Gen. Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City.
Meanwhile, Gaisano said VDC plans to open two to three more Metro Gaisano branches in Luzon within the year.
Metro Gaisano has three existing branches in Manila. These are located in Lucena City, Legaspi City and in Taguig, inside Ayala’s Market! Market! (JBN)

The Soul of the South
People Asia Magazine
08/05/2006
On her first day in office as governor of the province of Cebu, Gwen Garcia did something that caught the eye of every reporter in the area: She climbed to the top of the Provincial Capitol building. She had heard the complaints about the leaks on the roof and she wanted to check the situation herself.
Ignoring warnings from the provincial engineer, she proceeded upstairs, stopping for a moment to shout at the reporters not to follow her to the roof, as it was dangerous.
"I guess that, in a sense, defined how my administration was going to be," the governor muses.
As the daughter of Pablo Garcia, the outgoing governor, and as the first woman ever to assume the highest position in the province, the 50-year-old Garcia and her victory represent, as pundits say, "a major shift in the political landscape [of Cebu]." A lot of people commented on how the province spelled the difference for President Arroyo's victory at the polls.
The Presidential inauguration was even held at the Capitol, perhaps, to showcase the region as a seat of power. In keeping up with this trend, Garcia came into the Capitol with a mindset for change. With a strong determination and a quick-witted tongue, she whipped her people into shape, discarding and reinventing unproductive systems and practices.
She even remembers a time at the beginning of her term when she got angry with the Capitol employees because they didn't want to stand under the heat of the sun for their weekly Monday flag ceremony.
"When I looked behind me, I saw them inside the building fanning themselves!" She got so angry that she issued a memo saying that 15 minutes before eight in the morning all the doors would be closed and whoever failed to attend the ceremony would be considered absent for that day. Several people muttered to themselves, complaining that they were being treated like grade one pupils.
The governor shot back, "Grade one students are better off. At least they know how to respect the flag!"
When Garcia had her first general assembly with all the employees, she defined her principles of government. "I told them: government is an enterprise. An enterprise demands efficiency. Efficiency translates to good service. And good service redounds to the benefit of our constituents," she finishes. "Therefore I do not ask or need your love but as a governor, I demand your efficiency and professionalism."
The governor also installed cameras all over the Capitol to catch anyone loitering or not doing their job. She also made changes in the employees' appraisal system, prioritizing team rather than individual effort. Elizabeth Francia, who was the governor's classmate from elementary to high school in St. Theresa's and is now her chief of staff, understands her high standards because she understands the governor herself. "She demands a lot from her people because she demands a lot from herself," Francia explains.
The governor first caught the public's eye in 1991, when typhoon Uring brought floods that killed more than 5,000 people in Ormoc City, where she was then residing with her husband's family. With communication lines down and no immediate help in sight, she contacted her family in Cebu through satellite phone. Then Gov. Lito Osmeña was holding a press conference at that moment as Gwen's voice broke through to her brother Winston. She was peppered with questions by the local officials and by the media but handled the situation like a composed veteran.
"On radio, Gwen gave the most precise account of what happened, the most precise description of the situation, and the most precise assessment of what was urgently required. She was so calm and so sensible, you could not help but wonder who this woman could be," commented Freeman writer, Jerry Turidag in his column "To The Quick."
Because of this, Gwen (then Codilla) became a household name among Ormocanos. Her popularity helped her then father-in-law topple a big political name in the next mayoral elections. Even after her father-in-law won, Garcia was called back repeatedly to assist the administration.
"I wanted to go back to my business but they asked me to come and help. I planned the projects from the superdome, the shopping malls, the concreting of the roads and the water systems. I studied the budget. Basically, I learned the ropes of governance there to the last detail," she says. Along the way, she also worked on developing her business, the GGC Group Inc. and was on her way to earning a law degree from U.P. She also raised three children - Paolo, Christina and Carissa.
However, when Garcia's father Pablo was about to enter his third and final term as Cebu governor, he was looking for someone who would help him. Garcia expressed her apprehension because it would mean discontinuing her law studies. A friend, fortunately, helped her make the decision. "I told her, 'But I love law.' She replied, `What? You love law more than your father?' It felt like a punch to the stomach," she recalls. That made her realize what decision she should make.
When her father was about to finish his term, some of the mayors and officials floated the idea of her following in her father's footsteps and running for office. Garcia was again hesitant at first but after pondering and praying about the matter, she decided to go for it.
"This is what I can come up with in my limited understanding of things. We all have purpose. I said if I lose, at least I shall have tried."
She ran against two aggressive opponents - Clavel Martinez and Jun-Jun Osmeña, Sen. Sonny Osmeña's son. The election was heavily fought for and after the final count, less than 8,000 votes separated her from Martinez. The inauguration day was similarly difficult.
"We already knew that I won but there was a proclamation protest that the other camp filed. So I was proclaimed on the afternoon of June 30th and took my oath in the evening. I already said that perhaps this was what I was intended for," she says. "There were many tense moments, actually, before and during the proclamation. There were threats from the other camp marching and all but I was very calm about it. I think the people around me, my parents, our supporters, mayors who came, they were more nervous about it than I was. I had this quiet certainty that the process will fall through and that the chain of events will unfold."
Much of Garcia's earlier hesitation about running came from the worry that she wouldn't be able to live up to her father's reputation. But after talking to another friend, she realized she could carve her own path.
"My father was always very, very patient. He was always very, very kind. Very, very forgiving. So no one was ever punished," she says. "With me, policy is policy." One time a teacher went to the governor asking for a favor. She had just mandated that all public school teachers in Cebu should pass the Department of Education's qualifying exam before they are allowed to continue teaching. The teacher did not want to take the exam and she asked the governor if she could be the exception to the rule. She pleaded and even told the governor that she and her family have been long-time Garcia supporters and that they all voted for her in the last elections. "I told her, 'I'm really sorry. People around here will tell you, if the policy is so, I would never give an exception. You know you can just make it up to me. In the next election, don't vote for me'," she recounts. "It would be difficult [if I gave exceptions]. I'm the leader. I give a policy. I tell them this is our direction. And then I suddenly turn? The people following me will get confused."
At present, Garcia is also the deputy secretary general for Visayas of the League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP), chairman of the board of the Mactan Cebu Bridge Management Board (MCBMB), and a board member of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA). In order to maintain public order and safety in the province, Garcia took on the role of chairman of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC), the first woman to be appointed to the position. She has been very active in her role in the council.
In fact, Garcia recently blasted leftists in the recent RPOC meeting, saying that they have gained legal access to government. "Peace talks? No way! All out war!" she declares. Gen. Jovito Palparan even commended her for this via text message, saying that he supports and admires the governor "for her tough and proper stance, which is rare among local executives, against insurgency. I wish others would follow and I look forward to working with her."
Her political rivals have also been pushing for a bill that would break up Cebu into three parts, which she thinks is a self-serving act. "If they want to lead Cebu, they should just run against me," she challenges.
Aside from looking towards next year's elections, Garcia is pretty much focused on the province's immediate future. "I want Cebu to be the tourism and ICT hub of not only this country but of this region. Those are our two areas of focus. I am with the provincial ICT council as well." In its second strategy summit, the council presented an action plan and a timetable pegging it to be accomplished in the next five years. The governor acted in typical fashion. "If this were a 100-meter dash, our neighbors are already at 75 meters while we are still here and you are going to take five years? Cut it to seven months." The council is now aiming that the next summit, an investor's forum, will be held by next year instead.
Within the first 100 days of her term, Garcia also created the Provincial Tourism and Heritage Council to promote tourism and preserve the Cebuano heritage. She also launched the very successful Suroy Suroy Sugbo, a tour package offered to the public wherein they would visit each of Cebu's districts. The officials and people of each district welcome the tourists and showcase the best of their area. The program took off quickly. Garcia remembers how the resort owners of Bantayan Island came to her to complain about their low occupancy. The governor promised them that she would take care of it by having the program's northern tour go all the way up to Bantayan.
"This year, when we were preparing for our tour, I told them to block off their rooms because we were expecting about 100-200 people. They told me, 'I'm sorry, Governor, but we are fully booked.' I told them, 'Do you remember when you were complaining that you hardly had any bookings? Now I am a victim of my own program'!" she recounts.
"I believe that our culture and heritage will exactly be the added attraction that will draw the tourists in because, well, we have beautiful beaches and beautiful natural sights. It's really the culture and the heritage that give people a soul."
And while that is definitely true, Garcia has given Cebu more in her first term as governor. She has not only made the Cebuanos realize their soul, she has given them hope for a better future.

In the travel scene, Northwest Airlines awarded its top producers and treated the media with lunch at MIZU, Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, then soothing spa and massage at The SPA of Cebu. Cathay Pacific had a fun-filled farewell and welcome dinner for outgoing general manager Suzanne Wong and new general manager Eddie Hong. The Plantation Bay celebrated its 10th anniversary with a colorful Caribbean beach party. Marriott Cebu City Hotel has comfortable soft beddings in their refurbished rooms. Asiana Airlines celebrated its first anniversary at the Ballroom of Marriott Hotel.
The real estate is picking up. The historic Watch Tower of Amara in Liloan, a project of Cebu Holdings and Ayala, is attracting tourists and buyers. And for the average family, the Urban Development Housing has the Deca Homes in easy installment schemes.
The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry led by president Francis Monera is forming a study group to develop a plan to make Cebu an Ecozone. The CCCI tourism committee will meet to discuss the coalition of travel groups and to discern the Cebu brand.
That’s Cebu for you! Ah… simply amazing!
slerz August 6th, 2006, 04:55 AM just like those spoiled-rich-kids/forumers from another thread who doesnt seem to care about their money at all? them boys who are blind to the poverty around them.
This is not about spending money, This is not about not caring the less fortunate around us... This is about friendship for a better cause.
We, SSC Cebu has established a tight foundation of friendship. We've been through hardships that we've overcomed coz we care. You can see more of us behind these pictures that cannot be captured by cameras and that cannot be bought by money.
This answers why we're getting closer and tighter as friends.
We hang out for a cause and not spending money for nothing. And if others are thinking that we've done nothing... ask the media.promoting Cebu is our concern, healing the homesickness of our kababayans abroad through our pictures and videos, giving infos to those who wanna know about Cebu's latest developments, we ought to volunteer in this decembers ASEAN summit, we've raised several concerns and suggestions to our beloved Cebu officials that have been set aside and was given action (thank you), we've joined a tree planting activity and more to come...
We are slowly building up, strenthening our foundation for the benefit of everybody.

MarkiiBoi August 6th, 2006, 10:38 AM UNICEF impressed with projects for street children in Cebu City
Cebu City (Philippines), Aug 06: The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has expressed satisfaction about the various measures taken up for street children and minor offenders in Philippine metropolis Cebu City and has said that other countries and local governments have a lot to learn from these projects.
"We are impressed with the achievements of the Cebu City Task Force on Street Children (CCTFSC), particularly its non-formal education and health services for street kids," UNICEF senior programme officer Colin Davis said.
He said CCTFSC has a lot of successful projects that other governments can learn from because of its 20 years of experience in taking care of out-of-school youth, street children and children in conflict with the law.
The coordination between the Cebu City government and a network of Non-Government Organisations working together for the cause of children in the city is indeed remarkable, Davis added.
"They're all very good, very well established and very focused on their cause. It's about the only one I've seen that's gone a little step further to provide other services like internet access to street children. It's this going an extra mile, going one step ahead of the others that makes them different and interesting," Davis told reporters here on Thursday.

rage@cebu August 6th, 2006, 11:26 AM Malapascua Island featured in National Geographic ad
By Boboi Costas
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 11:05am (Mla time) 08/06/2006
CEBU gets another tourism boost with an international advertisement showing the underwater life of Malapascua Island, off Daanbantayan town in northern Cebu.
The “Your Vision No Limits TV vignette” is produced by and aired over the National Geographic Channel (NGC) Asia for Hewlett-Packard’s professional photo printer.
It features Tim Laman, resident photographer for National Geographic, on an underwater photo assignment.
Although the advertisement does not mention Cebu, it has the word “Malapascua, Philippines” in the opening subtitle.
What follows is a series of beautifully photographed images of Malapascua’s multicolored underwater life – alternate flashes of still and video shots of a red and yellow pipe fish; a green, blue and orange tropical fish; a shrimp resting on a bed of soft yellow coral; a blue starfish; lush pink reefs; an orange and black sea slug; and a thresher shark.
The 36-second advertisement also shows the humor and warmth of the Cebuanos.
It shows a local dive guide comparing his catch, a small fish, with Tim’s thresher shark printed on photo paper.
Later, they dive off with Tim taking a photo of his guide underwater.
At the end of the commercial, the Cebuano beams after Tim gives him the photo before leaving.
“This is part of the sponsorship package that we bought from National Geographic Channel.
The diving vignettes ran for about seven weeks, from June 28 ,” Nikka Singson-Abes, marketing communications manager of Hewlett-Packard Philippines Corp., said in an email.
Tim Laman has a Ph. D in Biology from Harvard University. His interest is documenting endangered wildlife. He was awarded the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards (1998, 2001, 2002, 2005), Pictures of the Year (1998), Nature’s Best International Photographic Awards (2001, 2003), and Communication Arts (2003).
His images have also appeared in National Geographic's "100 Best Photos" and "100 Best Wildlife Photos" special publications.
The National Geographic Channel is available globally in over 290 million homes in 164 countries and 27 languages.

Hey buddy, just a little bit of clarification here. I noticed you have been alluding to Davao in this comment and even did the same previously. We in the Davao thread don't wanna engage in a tussle between your Cebu and our Davao. To each his own. Rememeber your supposed "misposting"? We just let it slide for we know you were a newbie then. Other forumers though responded in a not so nice manner but that was just an appropriate gesture for such an unwelcome statement.
Regarding Valium's comment on SSC Cebu's vibrance, that was his opinion vented in the Davao thread and we take no responsibility on his actions. He's not even from Davao let alone pro-Davao. Please cease from alluding to Davao in your temper-raising comments. We are tired of rhetorics about city against other cities.
You mentioned "mingaw ilang thread". Well, you haven't done your job enough. We close a thread in just a week there. So it goes without saying you haven't done enough browsing.
It's my first time to reply to a comment here in your thread and I just did what was deemed rational. Case closed.

habagatcentral1 August 6th, 2006, 02:17 PM I've encountered many Koreans in Cebu and they say they prefered to be in Cebu since the tropical climate, vicinity of a beach and a laidback lifestyle, people and a number of good schools, are the factors why Cebu attracts more Koreans than Manila.
By the way, is there a direct flight to Seoul, Busan, Pusan, Inchon or any major Korean city in Cebu?

Ei wishbone. Parklane had their soft opening a few weeks ago. However the landscaping is not finished yet, even some parts of the building exterior are still on the works. We went there at about 2 a.m. kanina for a coffee break pero closed na. Hopefully tomorrow we can go there again and take some pics.

I've noticed that the vacant lot in front of Parklane Hotel has been cleared.. I just hope that this is still part of their property and that they will landscape it; otherwise, that part there would really look ugly.

Where are you based now bro? I agree with you. I think it was sayboomyboo who said that Filipinos based abroad would really miss their hometown even if they have already been established there..
In fact, Brodix (based in Japan) appreciated very much the local forumers' efforts to take pictures, especially with the new improvements here, because it's the only way that they can connect with their hometown. When Sugbuanon and Slerz's cameras went down, Brodix even thought of buying a digicam for them just to let them continue contributing pictures. Good thing though that D^Transporter thought of generously donating one for the group. I was really amazed -- I thought, is this how you guys really miss you hometown?
I was a bit moved because as of now, all I'm thinking is as to how I could get out of the country the soonest possible..
LordCarnal August 6th, 2006, 04:24 PM Oh by the way, I'm impressed that Cebu Parklane Hotel, if I'm not mistaken, is owned and operated by a Cebuano? I saw their opening featured last week at Channel 28 and I think one of the owners was interviewed.. At first, I thought that this 20-storey hotel is owned and/or operated by a foreign brand just like Marriot, Marco Polo, Shangri-La, etc..etc.. This is something to be proud of..
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/Slerz2/shj7.jpg
MarkiiBoi August 6th, 2006, 04:34 PM ^^ Yeah bai it is 100% Cebuano-owned. Pero lobby pa lang, ma iimpress ka na.
LordCarnal August 6th, 2006, 04:36 PM I've made some research, Cebu Parklane is being developed by Five Power Ventures Development Corp.
Could this be a joint venture between local businessmen and foreign ones just like the one who will develop the Banilad lot?
Here's another pic taken by Nits2006 of Flickr. This was taken last May 26. Nice hotel really..

you mean it used to fly to cebu???
MarkiiBoi August 6th, 2006, 05:50 PM According to their old website, it used to fly twice weekly on Monday and Thursday also to/from ICN.
terrapinoy August 6th, 2006, 06:09 PM I think they still have their ticket counters in MCIAA. I was told by staff at Marco Polo that they still fly in to Cebu through charters offered by Korean travel agencies. A quick check at MCIAA's web site shows both Korean and Asiana flights still listed. http://www.mactan-cebuairport.com.ph/international_departures.php
The Korean flight shows a 737-200, so this could be a charter flight and not a regularly scheduled one.
MarkiiBoi August 6th, 2006, 06:13 PM ^ I was refering to that website also. So maybe its only chartered, coz CEB is not listed on Korean Air's website.

Thanks Arnold for your response. I am based in Michigan, USA and you're right, I find this thread to be a great venue in connecting to my Cebuano roots. I like the fact that this interactive and provides me with up-to-the-minute info regarding Cebu's developments. It's funny that because of this, I end up knowing more about what's going on in Cebu than my brother who lives there.

Digital timer at Fuente circle marks Asean meet countdown
A LIFE-SIZED digital timer will be placed at the Fuente-Osmeña circle this week for the official countdown of the remaining 122 days before the Asean summit in December.
Officials from Cebu Province and the four host local government units, Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Cordova, will lead the ceremonial switching of the timer this Friday.
The activity will be held during the culmination of the Asean Week celebration.
Cebu City’s Asean organizing committee head Nagiel Bañacia said the City will join in the observance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Week to raise awareness and cooperation from the public.
Malacañang declared Aug. 7 to 11 as Asean Week to commemorate the founding of the 10-nation bloc, which was established in Aug. 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand.
First Gentleman Mike Arroyo was invited to the switching on of the 11-meter high digital clock timer, which was donated by businessman Michel Lhuiller.
The Cebu Organizing Committee for the Asean has also lined up a series of activities in preparation for the summit, including a weekly press conference and forum where the summit activities can be discussed.
This will not only demonstrate transparency on government expenditures in relation to the summit, it will also help the public learn about the Asean, Bañacia said.
“We want the public to be briefed on what the Asean and the summit is all about and be transparent about the activity. Hopefully, they will understand why the summit is important, and know what the country and our city, including them, can get from this important event,” he told reporters.
“It will be easy for the public to cooperate if they know and understand what the summit is about,” Bañacia added.
Members of the local media will also be briefed on the proceedings during the summit and how they can effectively cover the event.
The Asean was established in Aug. 1967 in Bangkok with five original member countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
Brunei Darussalam joined in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997, and most recently, Cambodia in 1999.
In the Asean Declaration, the member countries expressed their commitment “to accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian nations.”
The members are also committed “to promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries in the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.”
The 12th Asean Summit will be held for the first time in Cebu from Dec. 11 to 14. (LCR)

slerz August 7th, 2006, 01:45 AM Thanks Arnold for your response.

Sinjin P. August 7th, 2006, 06:36 AM Hitches delaying widening of two Consolacion links
TWO bridges in Consolacion town will be widened by three meters on both sides to hopefully ease traffic flow at the Cansaga Bridge and Pitogo Bridge.
Hitches, however, are delaying the P6-million bridge expansion project.
Engineer Daffodilla Maningo, of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 5th engineering district, said work on the Cansaga Bridge is already on its pile driving phase.
That on the Pitogo Bridge, though, has been suspended.
One Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) pipe will be affected; the contractor could not go on unless MCWD transfers it.
Since MCWD cannot work on the pipe yet, DPWH told contractor Duros Construction to temporarily stop working on the bridge.
Had there been no delays, work on both bridges would be finished by January next year.
Traffic is slow at the Cansaga Bridge because the two-lane northbound road narrows into a single lane upon approaching the bridge
Sinjin P. August 7th, 2006, 06:38 AM City Hall moves to provide markers on Mandaue streets
FROM “industrial hub of the South” to the “next convention city in Asia,” Mandaue City has earned one title after another.
Its streets, however, don’t have markers or even names at all.
Streets near Mandaue City Hall are named after local leaders and national heroes, but only some have proper markers.
Many still have the words “task force order” painted on the poles. The task force was a traffic management board created in 1995 yet.
Some streets have correct markers, but the painted letters have already faded or were damaged after exposure to heat and rain.
Confusion
The state of the City’s street markers has confused many that in one instance, a hardware store puzzled over its exact address.
In one of its promotional items, it cited the barangay’s name as that of the street where it is located.
Mayor Thadeo Ouano admits that many of the city’s streets don’t have markers; but he said City Hall is working on it.
Many markers, he added, are already old.
But once data from the Community Based Monitoring System (CBMS) is available, the markers would be prepared, the mayor said.
He planned markers to bear not only the name but the house numbers of residences along the street as well.
The CBMS is “spot-mapping” or doing a survey of all households in the city.
A joint team composed of CBMS and the Philippine Postal Corp. (Philpost) personnel will validate the gathered data.
When the house numbers are designated, City Hall would prepare the street markers and plates.
Ouano said that house numbering based on Philpost guidelines is better as it could help the mailman locate the addressee of letters and packages.
He hopes to start the project this year using available data

Sinjin P. August 7th, 2006, 06:41 AM Countdown starts for ASEAN hosting
August 7 to 11 is ASEAN Week in Cebu
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:34am (Mla time) 08/07/2006
A weeklong celebration starting Monday will officially launch Cebu's preparations for its hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in December.
Cebu City public information officer Nigel Bañacia said first gentleman Mike Arroyo was invited to switch on the P300,000 digital countdown timer at Fuente Osmeña on Friday.
The clock, donated by the Lhuillier Group of Companies, would mark the days leading to the formal opening of the summit, Bañacia said.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who will be in Cebu the same day for an Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting at the Shangri-La Mactan Island Resort and Spa, is not certain of attending the Fuente event.
Also on Friday, the Mandaue City government will hold a ceremonial cleanup drive along the summit's ceremonial route, which spans Marcelo Fernan Bridge, Plaridel St., Ouano Avenue and the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).
The Lapu-Lapu City government will hold a parade around the city on the same day.
Bañacia said traffic would be rerouted away from Fuente Osmeña on Friday as the Cebu Provincial government would stage a cultural presentation to be participated in by other towns and cities.
A series of pre-summit briefings are scheduled after the weeklong celebration to inform the Cebuanos of the significance of the summit.
The Cebu City government is asking for P5 million from the national government to renovate a building behind City Hall, which would house the Presidential Security Group during the summit.

rage@cebu August 7th, 2006, 06:59 AM Couple starts export business in Cebu with loan from ‘shark’
CEBU must be Jenifer Cruz’s lucky province, as he was able to establish his own export business here after leaving Pangasinan.
Jenifer, an employee of a Manila-based export company, was assigned to take care of the company’s branch in Cebu in 1985. After five years, he decided to venture into the export business.
His wife, Maribelle, who was working then with a company exporting fashion accessories, fully supported Jenifer’s plan. She willingly migrated to Cebu with their three sons.
“I have dreamt of going into business since I was a child. I just didn’t know then what business to pursue,” Jenifer said.
Loan
With the P5,000 he borrowed from a loan shark, Jenifer and Maribelle joined forces to establish 33 Point 3 Export Inc. The company’s name—“33” stands for Jenifer’s age, “Point” represents Maribelle while the “3” refers the couple’s three sons—indicates the couple’s love for their family.
After 16 years, 33 Point 3 now employs 75 regular employees and some 100 to 150 casual employees. The firm began with four workers.
The company also has 50 subcontractors, which involve 3,000 to 5,000 families, in Bohol.
From operating inside the Cruz’s rented house in 1990, the company was able to construct a four-story building on a 2,500-square meter lot in Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue. The building has a showroom and a chapel.
Looking back, Jenifer said it was difficult for a micro company to penetrate the export market with very limited funds for marketing and joining international trade fairs. But this challenged his resourcefulness.
“I approached offices of international companies in Manila (to sell the products),” he said.
Market
The company also continuously improves its products to maintain the interest of its market, 75 percent of which are in the US with 10 percent in Asia and 15 percent in Europe.
The firm supplies international companies, such as Target, Crate and Barrel and Pier 1.
Jenifer, who is also president of Cebu Gifts, Toys and Housewares Manufacturers and Exporters Inc., said 33 Point 3 was the first to commercialize and bring to the international market baskets made of rattan and nito, which were weaved “hapao” style. These products have more value than the traditional coco and buri baskets they initially exported at $1 to $10 each.
The company, which won a Golden Shell award, also manufactures fashion accessories for Liz Claiborne and Marks & Spencer.
Despite their busy schedules, the Cruz couple said they make time for their family, which has increased with the birth of a daughter nine years ago.
“For us, it’s not true that being together destroys a couple’s relationship. It depends. We just really love each other. I think that’s the secret,” Jenifer said. (JBN)

Sinjin P. August 7th, 2006, 07:26 AM ^^ The Megadome was supposed to be built for the ASEAN Summit hosting this December but the spindisc design has been dumped for it is more expensive and it will take longer to build so what is being built right now is the Cebu International Convention Center. rage@cebu August 7th, 2006, 07:31 AM they changed the design because of time constraints...
there was also a misunderstanding between the provincial government and the architect who designed it...
mas expensive pa nga ang *panget* na design... (But I LIKe It)...

gee August 7th, 2006, 09:05 AM First Filipino justice to get American Bar award
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:34am (Mla time) 08/07/2006
Honolulu - Former chief justice Hilario Davide Jr. and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy have received International Rule of Law awards from the American Bar Association (ABA).
Davide called the award on Saturday his "greatest gift from the legal profession." Kennedy said he accepted it with the understanding there is still much to be done to promote the rule of law around the world.
Both were honored at the ABA's national convention in Honolulu - Davide for his work in election and legal reform in the Philippines and Kennedy for his work promoting the rule of law abroad.
Davide, the first Filipino judicial figure to receive the ABA international award, praised the ABA for its efforts to promote justice, freedom and democracy around the world.
He said it works unceasingly to advance the rule of law and improve legal systems, especially in developing countries.
Kennedy, who has been on the U.S. high court since he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, has spent summers in Austria, teaching international and American law at the University of Salzburg. He also has been active in international judicial conferences.
Davide was appointed presidential adviser on electoral reform by Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in January, shortly after he retired as a Supreme Court justice. He had been on the court since 1991 and became chief justice in 1998.
The Philippines court and much of its law is patterned after that of the United States, which claimed the Philippines as a colony in the late 19th century and recognized its independence in 1946.

flesh_is_weak August 7th, 2006, 09:19 AM as most of you probably already know, im not an architect but a wannabe nurse...
pero i find it na sayang that cebu will never have high-rises on its waterfront area, since most high-rise developments are focused uptown on places such as the CBP and asiatown...
i dont know why, maybe because of the port and carbon market occupying nearly all of that space, or maybe because the reclamation areas are not feasible for such projects--either due to the rumor of the reclaimed land being too soft to support high-rises, or due to the fact that swapang owners of NRP lots would rather have their properties lay stale and get more expensive than making any move to develop it--or yet still, maybe because the downtown and waterfront area have low real estate value...
pero all i can say is sayang...we'd never get a night-shot of cebu from the harbour where we'd see high-rises straddling the edge of the water and being reflected on the sea...that would have been very much like hong-kong...
P.S. di ba there were plans to rehabilitate the carbon market and in fact, the entire waterfront area by replacing the old structures with modern ones? kumusta na man to? ang most recent development ra tingali diha kay ang SRP ug ang city hall--by the way, i dont find the extension nice, although i hope the renovations on the old one would turn out great...what was the philippine town again with a mansion-like town hall? i love that pic...
h3nry August 7th, 2006, 11:11 AM I am a facade lover but it doesn't mean that I'm infavor with the growing modernization of the metropolis.
i hope that the metro cebu cities would timelessly preserve old structures and areas there.
In fact metro cebu is a known metro bcoz of the modern and old blends.
A little mistake will turn this metro into another manila.. unorganized.
Personally, I hope we would strive more to become CEBU. not becoming Hongkong.
An island showcasing the both worlds including what hongkong may offer.
Hongkong doesn't have the tourism that we have, many knew that.
Sinjin P. August 7th, 2006, 11:34 AM Yes, I would love Cebu to be ultra modern with all these highways, tunnels, subways, skyscrapers, and high-tech facilities but in a way that it would not destroy the heritage sites and the environment
MarkiiBoi August 7th, 2006, 11:35 AM @sinjin: yup i submitted the banner to Jan yesterday and asked him to have it posted between Aug 7-11. i actually explained that its the anniversary of Cebu province, but i used Cebu City just to represent the province. it will be posted tomorrow.
Sinjin P. August 7th, 2006, 11:39 AM ^^ Yeah because if it will just be Cebu Province, there is a possibility that he might not put it up since it's not urban related, bogo sad ko dah! :D

Wow, so is that the final logo? Bakit parang hindi siya iconic to Cebu?
valium August 7th, 2006, 11:55 AM the logo looks like an ad for a detergent soap.
sugbuanon August 7th, 2006, 11:57 AM ^^ agree.. hate that logo.. it doesnt represent cebu at all..
flesh_is_weak August 7th, 2006, 11:59 AM yup, palit no mo ug ASEAN laundry bar with sampaguita scent...lol
valium August 7th, 2006, 12:09 PM so funny, there was so much hype about ASEAN in cebu and you come up with that logo? and what is "one caring asnd sharing community" all about?????? sounds like a theme for an elementary school's monthly activity. crap.
flesh_is_weak August 7th, 2006, 12:10 PM sayo pa kaayo para mag-mount ug streamers...basin by december tattered na kaayo na sila tan-awon....wa nay chance na ma-ilisan pa ang logo? for the sake of all that is holy, somebody please do something about it...i have nothing against flowers, but for the ASEAN logo? come on, those guys up there need to be a bit more creative...who designed it anyway?
about my idea of high-rise developments in cebu's waterfront, pwede ra man pud adto sa NRP and SRP areas ug sa dapit sa carbon--wala bayay historic landmarks ngadto kay nangasunog na, kung naa man gani kay nahimo na pud ug eyesore--in my own opinion--kay wa man tarunga ug atiman...pwede ra man pud tingali if some building designer could come up with a way to integrate these old structures with modern ones...
i even visualized a rather futuristic and ambitious plan for the mangrove forests of cordova--been there once for a planting activity and heard of the locals opposition to a proposed commercial area ala CBP/MEPZ--pwede man siguro i-raise and buildings on platforms dugged deep into the seabed unya raised pud ang mga roadways so as to allow the mangroves to thrive below--pwede pud butangan ug access gikan sa taas padung ngadto sa mangrove forest for the people to appreciate the natural scenery...hahayz...
pasensyahe lang kung medyo weird tipsy man gud ko gamay karon...
slerz August 7th, 2006, 12:16 PM I like the LOGO :applause:

LordCarnal August 7th, 2006, 12:54 PM ^^
Those ASEAN Banners are just for the countdown opening ceremony this August 12... Those are not for the December summit; for sure, those banners would be removed after the countdown ceremony.. The countdown signals the start of the beautification activities in the city..
With regards to the symbol, well, don't pin the blame on Cebu but rather on the National Organizing Committee.. Cebu is just a venue..
@Sugbuanon
^^ agree.. hate that logo.. it doesnt represent cebu at all..
The logo should not represent Cebu Marvin but rather the ASEAN, hehehe.. Otherwise, if they put Magellan's Cross in it, muslim countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and even the buddhist ones like Thailand would not fit in...

LordCarnal August 7th, 2006, 01:10 PM double post..
Sinjin P. August 7th, 2006, 01:13 PM ^^ But last year, Malaysia was the host and their logo was the Petronas Towers, very iconic to them! How about us? We need to have a logo better than that
LordCarnal August 7th, 2006, 01:16 PM ^^
yeah right.. It might have been iconic if they put the Philippine Eagle in it? It's the national organizing committee who came up with that logo right?
ivanc August 7th, 2006, 01:24 PM ok baya ang theme nga one caring and sharing community.. it embodies the goal of the asean; unity among its members for a prosperous goal.
with regards to the logo, mura man ug hawaiian ang dating.. maybe they would like to extend a "resort feeling", afterall, cebu is a resort destination. :)
dive-cebu August 7th, 2006, 02:05 PM i don't like the logo either that's why in one of the previous threads i was raising my concerns about the asean logo because i heard it before that it will show our national flower daw, sampaguita. though most of us don't like it, please don't put the blame on us cebuanos! CEBU as what arnold had said is just the venue of this big event. the national organizing committe are the ones making important decisions, one of which the selection of the design of the logo... sila man sad gani ang namahala sa pag accept ug mga volunteers among other tasks... but the LOGO or the THEME, whether its nice or not could NEVER demoralize us CEBUANOS to celebrate that the ASEAN summit will be held in our lovely place... whatever other people say, we DO NOT MIND YOU, trippers!!! what we are focusing right now is how to contribute to the total success of this event... aside from this, we CEBUANOS have every right to CELEBRATE!!! we rich kids are enjoying with whatever is happening in cebu right now... as long as we are reaping success, we will just expect that there would be loads of trippers and bashers and what not in this forum... but don't worry, you are actually helping us cebuanos to strive more, to do better and to PARTY even more!!! remember, we are RICH KIDS, because we are in a RICH place called, CEBU!!!! dammit! :scouserd:
LordCarnal August 7th, 2006, 02:11 PM ^^
umm murag lain man na paminawn kanang issue about "rich".. hehehe.. basig ma mis-interpret nasad ta ana.. That was just an isolated comment, no need to make it big..

slerz August 7th, 2006, 02:31 PM ^^yeah! that tartanillas are a big tourist hit... bisag gani ako, I've learned what is tourism... I've realized that tourism is not only malls, paved streets, bars, man made lagoons etc. but also about our places' natives, like the tartanillas that is a regular daily transportation in Pasil area. Not that neat but I see it as a tourist spot coz of the charm and the experience of a tourist. Sa una, batian gyud ko sa Pasil but now ganahan na ko coz of my tarta experience....hehe
mao diay nang mga Koreano ok ra nila mag suroy suroy sa downtown coz they find the place extraordinary and unique...hehe
habagatcentral1 August 7th, 2006, 02:32 PM ^^ Tarantilla, tartanilla? What? Calesa de Cebu! Sa dampi Carbon to somewhere south of downtown Cebu yan right?
Ang kanang logo sa ASEAN, murag Mr.Clean Sampaguita Fresh. Anyway, is that the final ASEAN logo for the upcoming summit?

exactly, tourists are not keen on skyscrapers and tall buildings cause they all have that where they come from. they wanna see something different, like culture and art and history which apparently isnt promoted well by the Philippines. they want to see a different side of the world.
LordCarnal August 7th, 2006, 02:37 PM It's Tartanilla here Bernie..

dampi Carbon? ofcourse coz Carbon is a wet market... think twice amigo...
or maybe wet markets in other cities that you've visited are like malls... sosyal diay...
habagatcentral1 August 7th, 2006, 02:40 PM ^^ Thanks Arnold.
Tarantillas are the icons of heritage for downtown Cebu's south. Medyo pa-ninduta pa nga gamay and i-promote na unta ang tarantilla for tourists for a different Cebu experience. Pila ang plete gikan Carbon to Taboan market/Ludo?
Barato man magsakay sa tarantilla? Kay ang calesa sa Manila, mahal kaayo magsingil.
Ngek! Palarehas man tanan ang wet market sa Pinas oi, especially major cities, hehehe! :D

Yeah bro.. Nice if the local government will improve these tartanillas, say, make the tartanillas more colourful. The drivers should also wear Filipiniana costumes. And also, nice if they would be given space at the historic district of Cebu (Plaza Independencia, Pari-an, Cathedral, Sto. Niño) all for the purpose of tourism. It would be awesome to do a heritage tour while riding these tartanillas..
As of now, these Tartanillas can be found in a somewhat dirty and even dangerous part of the city, so I don't think the tourists can really have the experience unless they're brave enough... Sayang, nice if there'a a particular street in downtown (at least nearer to the heritage district) that would be totally closed to vehicular traffic. That road could then be overlayed with cobblestones, and then the old buildings could be renovated into outdoor cafes/restos, museums, or hotels, phew!
By the way, there's already an annual Tartanilla Festival here in Cebu. I think it happens every June.
dampi Carbon? ofcourse coz Carbon is a wet market... think twice amigo...

If I were the mayor, I would speed up the construction of the new Carbon Market building. What was once the "Freedom Park" (currently part of Carbon Market) should be restored to what it formerly was -- a park.
The tartanillas could then go around this rectangular park.
echeverriavy August 7th, 2006, 03:05 PM ppsssstttt... oi mga peepz, tanawa ninyo ang banner sa skyscraper city, cebu city ang gi feature. ^^^
habagatcentral1 August 7th, 2006, 03:10 PM ^^ Asa bai?
