guys, maypa ug tartanilla na lang to ang gibutang sa logo, di ba naa may tartanilla festival sa cebu, therefore, the tartanilla is an icon of cebu, so pwede siya gamiton sa logo...

the tartanilla could also symbolize cebu in the sense that it preserves the past while moving on forward to the present, as seen in the tartanillas cruising through the streets of downtown cebu alongside modern vehicles...its like cebu moves on towards the future while keeping its rich heritage alive

It's actually the second or third time that a Cebu banner was put up there Bernie.. Any forumer can just make a banner and submit it to Jan.. That panoramic view was taken from the top floors of Club Ultima during our tour there last June 12. I think it's markiiboi who took that picture.

With regards to that banner now, it was also Markiiboi who made it and he submitted it to Jan because it Cebu Province's anniversary now. The previous ones, I don't know who made it. Maybe rusty18..

Even Davao City was also featured there.. I'm not sure with the other cities.. A banner during the Philippines Independence Day was also featured last June 12..

Shangri-La Mactan completes final phase of major renovation
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 08/08/2006

Shangri-La's Mactan Island Resort and Spa recently completed the final phase of its major renovation program with the launching of its new Italian restaurant Acqua in the newly refurbished Ocean Wing.

Soon, the newly renovated Ocean Wing will be formally launched. It houses 180-state-of-the-art rooms designed by team of Hirsch Bedner and Associated Limited in Hong Kong.

Last year, the Resort has spent US$500 million for its renovation program, and another US$7 million was spent for this year.

The huge investment is meant to sustain the supreme quality standard of Shangri-la brand and meet its guests' expectations, as one of the top premier resorts in Asia, said Shangri-La's Mactan general manager Timothy Wright.

Wright said the Hong Kong-based Shangri-La International noted the strength of the Philippines, specifically Cebu in tourism, and spending huge amount of property improvement is a worth move.

Shangri-La's Mactan has practically undergone major facelift in the last three years, including the investment of the largest spa facility called "Chi Spa Village" within the 10-hectare property in Punta Engaño, Mactan Island.

The resort will be one of the biggest resort hosts in the upcoming ASEAN Summit in December this year.

In 2004, the 547-room five-star resort has completed the US$700,000 renovation of fine dining restaurant Cowrie Cove, now accommodating a sitting capacity of about 160, from 120 sitting capacity prior to the renovation.

The new Acqua Italian restaurant, which was officially opened over the weekend is situated at the garden of the Ocean Wing, which overlooks the infinity pool and the ocean.

"In Acqua, everything is personalized, we will endeavor to cook something with only the freshest ingredients to respond individual tastes," said the resort's executive Italian chef Marco Anzani.

The resort's move in spending the multi-million dollar investment to refurbish the entire Shangri-La Mactan property is also in time of Cebu's dire need of five-star resort and hotel accommodation brought about by the increasing awareness in the international market for Cebu as a preferred leisure and vacation hub in Asia.

As of this moment though, the company has no plan to invest for additional room capacity and fully utilize the 10-hectare property saying Shangri-La is highly considering its space factor because it is a garden resort.

"If we build more structures, we will lose the landscaping beauty of the resort. Space factor is very important for us," Wright said.

Waterfront hotels continue renovations for Asean summit
SunStar

WATERFRONT Cebu City Hotel and Casino (WCCHC) will continue to spend for the hotel’s preparations for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in December.

Waterfront Philippines Inc. (WPI) president Rexlon Gatchalian said, in an interview, that the Gatchalian-led hotel has allocated some P100 million for the renovation of the hotel’s facilities, especially the function rooms and guest rooms.

“We would have refurbished 250 suite rooms in time for the summit. We are already fully booked for the summit,” he said on the side of WPI’s stockholders’ meeting last Saturday.

Training

Group-wise, WPI will spend a total of P300 million for the renovations of its four hotels—WCCHC, Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino, Manila Pavilion Hotel and Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao.

Aside from the renovations, WPI is also training its personnel to improve customer service and its local and distribution network with the main objective of improving its revenues and reaching its P2-billion revenue target for this year.

WPI’s revenue last year was P1.8 billion, some nine-percent less than its P1.98 billion revenue the previous year. The company’s net income also dropped 89 percent to P43 million from P408 million in 2004.

Subsidiary

Gatchalian said the company is optimistic of the performance of one of its subsidiaries, Waterfront Food Concept Inc. (WFCI), in Cebu with the entry of more hotels and food establishments.

He said WPI looks at new hotels as complementary to its operations, especially in the food business, rather than a competition.

“Bigger convention planners can now really focus on Cebu,” Gatchalian said.

He said Cebu-based WFCI, which specializes in the pastry business, caters to the needs of the WPI’s hotels and in supplying pastries to coffee shops and other food channels.

Boljoon: Cebu’s Own Gibraltar
21st, 2006 by jorge

If you are familiar with Gibraltar, then you know why Boljoon is likened to that famous UK Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of Iberian Peninsula in Europe. Like the famous Gibraltar, the town’s coastal topography is breath-takingly beautiful.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b384/peejay_domek/boljoon.jpg

Boljoon is one of the oldest towns in the southern part of Cebu’s main island. It is located 103 kilometers from the provincial capital, in the southeastern seaboard. Noted for its quaint and picturesque terrain, the town is generally mountainous and rugged and has almost no coastal plains except in the town proper. Its rugged coasts are bordered by cliffs and luxuriant hills, which have a commanding view of Bohol Strait.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b384/peejay_domek/boljoon2.jpg

According to some folk tales, the Municipality of Boljoon derived its name from the town’s peculiar topographical appearance. In the vernacular, it is called “Bulho” meaning a large land mass cavitation surrounded by mountains, or a valley, in Cebuano, brought about by the sudden collapse of a mountain range. Boljoon is a postcard-perfect town endowed with the most picturesque coastlines and beautiful sceneries anywhere in Cebu.

Boljoon is a town like no other anywhere in Cebu. It is a town where naturally beautiful landscape elicits wonder and amazement from the visitors. For the first-time visitors, the town evokes of a place they can never find in the Philippines. The paved road, carved out of the sheer limestone cliffs with hardy plants clinging precariously on their surface, winds through the entire contour of the town’s rugged coastal terrain.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b384/peejay_domek/boljoon3.jpg

The town is also home to one of the country’s oldest Augustinian churches, the Nuestra Señora Patrocinio de Maria church which was established by the Augustinian friars on June 23, 1599, first as a visitor of the parish of Carcar, then as a parish in 1690. It was declared National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum on July 31, 2001 pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 374, in relation to Republic Act No. 4846, the only structure in Cebu bestowed with such honor and distinction.

PGMA wants ASEAN leaders to enjoy Cebu's sights
7/14/2006

CEBU CITY, July 14 (PNA) - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo wants to show off the country to the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) through Cebu, a senior Philippine foreign affairs official said. She personally handpicked the Ocean Pavilion at the Shangri-La Mactan Island Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City as venue of the leaders retreat where the heads of states are expected to sign the Cebu Declaration, said Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr.
"The idea of holding it at Shangri-La's Ocean Pavilion came from the President because she wanted to show a setting that will allow the leaders to speak and at the same time appreciate what the Philippines has to offer," said Paynor, also secretary general to the 12th ASEAN Summit, in his presentation before Cebu Rotarians on Thursday at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel.

Paynor, also presidential adviser on international visits, said the 12th ASEAN Summit Leaders Retreat will be held on Dec. 12 where the 10 heads of states will also be staying.

He said that while the ASEAN leaders will have an exclusive meeting at the Hotel's Ocean Pavilion, there will be a flotilla of bangka (boats) with colorful sails stationed in the sea as an added sight and "effect" for the visiting leaders.

The Ocean Pavilion is a pyramid-like structure that resembles the steeple of a chapel from afar. The structure is located in the middle of a garden near the beach.

The 10 ASEAN leaders will be seated at a round table during the summit. The ASEAN is composed of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

"The entire structure will be built with an open view so that all leaders will have a view of the sea from wherever they are facing," Paynor said. Temporary structures will be put up at the adjacent resort, Portofino, such as tents for ministers, support staff and security personnel. The tents will appear like a native Philippine hut from the outside.

The Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) at the Mandaue City reclamation area, on the other hand, will host 32 summit and pre-summit meetings such as the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN+3 Summit. East Asia Summit will be participated in by the 10 ASEAN member countries and their dialog partners -- People's Republic of China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, and Russia, which will carry an observer status. France is planning to attend as an observer.

The pre-summit meeting will be held December 6-9, while the summit and its related meetings with dialog partners will run from December 10 to 13.

The 12 other summit-related meetings such as Health Ministers Meeting and the East Asia Growth Area-Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines (EAGA-BIMP) meeting at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel in Cebu City. The same hotel will also "tentatively" host the meeting between the Mekong Basin Cooperation composed of Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam (CMLV).

Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Barangay Lahug, on the other hand, will host the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, another meeting parallel.

A special road will be built that will connect the Mactan Cebu International Airport's arrival area to Shangri-la Hotel where the heads of states are billeted to prevent disruption of commercial traffic at the airport, Paynor said.

A P49.5 million VIP lounge will also be built near the Air Force Operations Center where Presidential plane usually park during her visits to Cebu. The airport will no longer construct an additional space for aircraft parking because 12 of the 15 aircrafts can be accommodated at the nearby Mactan Benito Ebuen Airbase. The two other places will be parked at the existing ramps at the MCIA.

According to Paynor, two heads of state will fly via a commercial flight while France has yet to confirm its participation. (PNA) LGI/LOR/EB

After QuatroCientos Trenta y Siete Años of rain and shine, through agony and ecstasy, through blood, sweat and tears that this great city was pondered. What is Cebu City today?

I believe, its already blazing a trail the goal that every Sugbuanon will like to his place. Progress and a liveable city and a province.

People that are warm, caring and proud of their heritage and culture and nature.

So who says that Cebu is where yayas and maids come from? I say, stand up, be proud to be a Sugbuanon, a Bisaya, a Filipino! For the Visayan dream to be a reality!

I don't like it. When you quote" yayas and maids come from". This is a form of discremination towards those hardworking individuals.
Cebu or Zugbo or Sugbo is a rich hispanic city during the pre-spanish occupancy. Considered as a major market according to several chinese dynasty.

Its a sad fact friend. Still, some of the people depicted not only Cebuanos but the rest of VisMinda as the place where "Chimays" come from.

I don't even like shows that depict "Visayans" as something chimi-aa or cheap. Mapapahiya lang siguro kon moadto pa sila (those who stereotype Bisaya) karon sa Cebu or any other place in VisMInda. In fact, I'll be enraged when people discriminate Visayan back in high school (sa Cavite ako nag-highschool). Look at Cebu now? A great city in the south.

I don't see yayas as a bad image for Cebu or the rest of VisMinda but a picture of how caring, how courageous and how hardworking Visayans and Mindanaoans are.

I took it on a positive perspective.

>>By the way, a question: Is it possible within the near future that the Philippines has 2 Stock Exchanges just as like Vietnam has now? One for Manila and the other for Cebu? With the economic progress trend continued for about a decade, it may be possible.

Right and include the time until Cory Aquino. Actually Ceboom started during the time of FVR and Gov. Osmeña. The fact is that during the time of Marcos it was all Metro Manila and surrounding provinces.

LordCarnal
August 8th, 2006, 03:35 PM
yeah during the time of Gov. Lito Osmena.

But prior to that, especially when Gullas was governor, I think the city itself was already showing signs of becoming a promising destination.. I still have my dad's 1980 Newsweek and Cebu Plaza Hotel was being featured when it was inaugurated..

And most especially, too, during the time of Sergio Osmena Jr., when the North Reclamation Area was built. It would have become Cebu's first neo-central business district (like Cebu Business Park), with its wide gridlike streets and zoned "for leased only" lots, until Marcos destroyed the hope...

Hotels, resorts expect to earn over US$10M
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 08/09/2006

About US$10 million is expected to be generated by Cebu's hotels and resorts in the upcoming ASEAN Summit come December 9 to 13, 2006.

This estimated amount is based on a conservative calculation of over 10,000 guests that will arrive in Cebu, not only in the proper five-day event, but including earlier meetings that will be held in Cebu in the preparation for the Summit.

Hotelier and general manager of Cebu Parklane International Hotel Ray Fuentes said each guest is expected to spend an average if not a minimum of US$200 a day, only for the accommodation and food expenses, excluding other expenses for shopping, tours, among others.

The ASEAN Summit preparation was the highlight of yesterday's discussion during the formal launching of "888 News Forum at Parklane" a weekly forum spearheaded by DOT, National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (Naitas), and Cebu Parklane International Hotel.

According to Roa, prior to the main event that is scheduled on December 9 to 13, there will be 32 meetings to be held in Cebu, this include an international business leaders' meeting that will be held at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casinos, and other events related to the ASEAN Summit.

Roa said the Philippine government is only spending on the accommodation for the head of states, but the members of the delegations in each country, will have to spend for their own accommodations.

The US$10 million expected to pour into Cebu's economy is only calculating the basic need of each delegate, which is only the accommodation and food, the amount is expected to double as delegates will have to go to other services like shopping, spa, tour, wining, and dining.

In the Metro Cebu area, which covers cities of Talisay City, Cebu City, Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City, there are only a little over 6,000 rooms that will be able to accommodate the delegates.

There are 16 participating countries in the ASEAN Summit each head of state is expected to bring over 100-member delegation. About 2,000 are expected to come from different media organizations in the world.

Roa said that the impact of the ASEAN Summit that will be held in Cebu will be felt by Cebuanos in the long term. It will help the positioning of Cebu as an international vacation hub, and that tourism will be well benefited in this event.

Roa added that these ASEAN Summit participants are not ordinary people, they are expected to spend more than what a usual tourist is spending.

At least six hotels/resorts are already identified to be the hosts of top-notch head of states. According to Roa, although room shortage is a problem in Cebu, the ASEAN Summit accommodation committee has already made arrangements to hotels of the bookings.

Province-wide, including resorts located in countryside, like Pulchra, Alegre, Badian Island, resorts in Bantayan Island, Malapascua, and others, Cebu has over 9,000 hotel and resort rooms.

The real-estate arm of the Gatchalian group of companies plans to develop four more properties in Cebu within the next five years.

Elvira Ting, president and chief executive officer of Philippine Estate Corp. (PEC) said the development of one of these projects will start late next year, “if all remains well.”

“We will definitely stay in Cebu. After all, we have been doing good here,” she said in an interview after the stockholders’ meeting of Waterfront Philippines Inc. (WPI) last Saturday.

Ting said PEC is also looking at Cebu as one of its possible sites for a retirement village project.

Kenneth Gatchalian, PEC executive vice president and chief operating officer, said the sister company of Waterfront Hotels has already invested a total of P500 million in Cebu alone.

PEC is currently developing phase four of its maiden project in the province, the 40-hectare Pacific Grand Villa, located in Mactan.

The first three phases of the middle-end to high-end residential project, which started during the Asian financial crisis in 1997, are already sold out, Gatchalian said.

PEC’s second project, Pacific Grand Town Homes, located right beside the Grand Villa, is already 60 percent sold.

Gatchalian said most of the buyers of its residential developments are expatriates and young professionals.

As for PEC’s future projects, he said the company does not have a preferred destination or location.

“It could be anywhere in Cebu where we are welcome,” Gatchalian said.

Aside from Cebu, the company is also looking for opportunities to develop properties in other areas in the Visayas and Mindanao. (JBN)

Oridinary Cebuanos may not yet appreciate the holding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in Cebu in December, because it does not seem to affect their lives directly.

But Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 Director Patria “Dawnie” Roa said the arrival of some 10,000 foreign dignitaries and their entourage, including 2,000 foreign journalists, will have a “multiplier effect” on the economy, particularly in Cebu.

Although the Philippine Government will host the heads of state, all the other foreign visitors will be spending and buying things for themselves while in Cebu, Roa said.

A “conservative estimate” would be US$200 spent each day for accommodations, food and transportation for each visitor, said Cebu Parklane International Hotel manager Rey Fuentes.

Equipment

Delegates are also likely to rent office equipment and spend extra on souvenirs and entertainment.

To help get more people involved in the Asean preparations, barangay captains of Mandaue City will be invited to a “culture of tourism” seminar next month, said Robert Lim Joseph of the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (NAITAS).

“We would like to see Cebu compete with Singapore or Thailand. We would like to see infrastructure support, such as energy and a light rail transit system. We would like to see culinary arts developed,” Lim said.

All sectors, particularly education, should get involved in tourism promotion, added Dr. Mila Espina, head of the tourism committee of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Nagiel Bañacia, Cebu City Hall’s public information officer, sought the public’s cooperation.

City Hall will have a briefing with members of the Cebu press in September to discuss the “substantial” aspects of the summit, as well as the rules governing press coverage.

Also yesterday, Roa warned hotels and resorts against providing sex workers to the foreign visitors, saying they could lose their accreditation once they are caught doing so.

Reliable power

Roa admitted that the sex trade is everywhere, so it is possible that commercial sex workers, including those who are not from Cebu, would take advantage of the summit.

“I have revoked (the accreditation of) tour guides who provide female companions to tourists,” Roa warned.

Meanwhile, Ethel Natera of the Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) assured that there will be “reliable power in Cebu” during the Asean summit.

She told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview that Veco is coordinating with the National Transmission Corp. and National Power Corp. for this.

As for security, Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Silverio Alarcio said there are no “specific threats against the Asean.”
The PRO is preparing its personnel for the summit through training and refresher courses.

Alarcio said they already acquired most of their mobility requirements and are hoping that the modern monitoring equipment will arrive before the summit.

He said they could test their security plans for the four-day summit during the various meetings to be held in Cebu by senior officials and technical working groups from the different Asean member-countries.

The preparation for the Asean summit was the main topic during yesterday’s first 888 News Forum at the Parklane Hotel, which is organized by some local journalists and the NAITAS.

Yesterday also happened to be the 39th anniversary of the Asean.

The Asean was established in Bangkok on Aug. 8, 1967 by the five original member-countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Brunei Darussalam joined on Jan. 8, 1984; Vietnam on July 28, 1995; Laos and Myanmar on July 23, 1997; and Cambodia on April 30 1999. (ROV/With IDA)

The Philippine government expects an infusion of at least P204 million by foreigners into the Metro Cebu economy during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit this December.

Patria Roa, regional director of the Department of Tourism in Central Visayas (DOT-7), said the government expects around 5,000 foreigners to visit Cebu during the summit, each of whom is expected to stay around four days, spending around $200 (P10,200) a day.

The spending estimate, Roa said, was even a conservative one.

“This is small if this amount will cover hotel accommodation, transportation and food,” she said during the launch of the 888 Media Forum at the Parklane Hotel.

Of the 5,000 foreigners, 3,000 will be delegates to the summit, while the other 2,000 will be members of international media who will cover the event.

The computation, she said, does not even include the expenditures of around 5,000 Filipino delegates, security personnel, and local media who will come from other parts of the country for the summit.

However, the infusions would not end with the summit, Roa said, since the exposure Cebu will have from international journalists’ coverage of the summit will have a “multiplier effect.”

“Everything that they will eat and everything that will write about will be for Cebu,” Roa said.

“This is the only time we can take advantage of the (foreign) media. If we place an ad in Japan promoting Cebu, we would be spending an equivalent of an entire year’s budget for the Department of Public Services,” said Nagiel Bañacia, Cebu City protocol officer.

“But on those days, they will only be writing about Cebu,” he said.

“We should remember that these are not just ordinary tourists. These are top government officials and top-caliber journalists. They are ready to spend,” Bañacia added. “They will be buying souvenirs, renting cars and going out during the night.”

ACCOMMODATIONS

Cebu City is tasked to take care of and accommodate local and foreign media who will cover the summit.

At least 400 journalists are expected to come from Japan and South Korea, countries from which Cebu gets most of its tourists.

The Philippine government will shoulder the accommodations of the heads of states, who will be billeted in presidential suites of the different hotels and resorts in Cebu and Lapu-Lapu cities.

The accommodations of other visiting officials will be shouldered by their own governments.

Even though the total number of foreign and local visitors coming into Cebu will reach 10,000, Roa said this would not be a problem for Metro Cebu’s 6,000 hotel rooms.

She said guests will be coming in on different dates for the summit, which would be held from December 9 to 14.

The ASEAN ministers will meet in 32 smaller meetings before the heads of states finally meet for the summit.

“By the time the heads of states come in, many of the staff members and ministers will be going out of the country already,” she said. “All the debates will be settled by these smaller meetings. The heads of states will only come and formalize everything on the last day.”

AIRCRAFT PARKING

At least 18 large passenger aircraft are expected to bring the foreign delegates into Cebu.

These will be parked at the Mactan Cebu International Airport for the duration of the summit.

The governments of Japan, Malaysia and South Korea are expected to bring two Boeing 747-400 jets – one of the largest aircrafts in the world – each with a capacity of 500 passengers.

Other countries will be bringing at least one large aircraft and other smaller planes.

Only two heads of states — Singapore and New Zealand — will be coming in to Cebu by regular commercial aircraft, Bañacia said.

SECURITY

Chief Superintendent Silverio Alarcio Jr., director of Central Visayas police, said the police, military, coast guard, and the Presidential Security Group already have their preparations for the summit “in full swing.”

Alarcio said around 4,000 security personnel would be coming into Metro Cebu to secure the summit, some of whom will arrive earlier than expected.

Cebu City only has 900 policemen, while the entire Central Visayas has 5,000.

Alarcio also said that the regional police is expecting 20 new police cars and communications equipment from the provincial government to be used during the summit.

Meanwhile, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he would not be attending the launching this Friday of a digital countdown timer to the ASEAN Summit that is being set up at Fuente Osmeña.

Osmeña said he would be in to Manila to attend the 80th birthday celebration of businessman John Gokongwei that day.

The mayor said he supports the launching of the P300,000 digital timer, donated by the Lhuillier family and to be installed by the Cebu provincial government.

He said, however, he considers Gokongwei as a major contributor to the city government due to the businessman's investments in Cebu City, and that he would rather be with Gokongwei’s birthday celebration.

He revealed that Gokongwei was even buying block 10 of the North Reclamation Area (across the old White Gold department store) for at least P500 million.

The sale of the property would be formalized when the Commission on Audit (COA) issues a certification authorizing its disposal to the Gokongweis.

Bañacia said the 3.2-meter by 1.2-meter digital timer would remind Cebuanos of the summit.

He said a liquid crystal display would be added to the digital timer on Monday to make it useful as a display screen for the city's announcements after the summit. /With a report by Reporter Doris C. Bongcac

Over half a million foreign and local tourists, including Balikbayans and overseas Filipino workers, visited Cebu during the first five months of the year, according to records of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in Central Visayas.

Cebu posted an 11.05-percent increase in visitor arrivals, with 508,028 tourists compared to the same period last year.

Koreans remained the top on the list of the most number of foreign tourists visiting the province.

About 61,280 Koreans, representing 33.13 percent of the total visitor arrivals, were here in Cebu. The number is 30.89 percent higher compared to the same period last year.

DOT Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano said earlier that the country, especially Cebu, could expect more arrivals from Korea.

The tourism chief noted current billion-peso hotel investment project poured by Korean businessmen and other companies in Cebu as propeller for tourism growth in the country.

Japan kept the second spot, with 49,496 Japanese visiting Cebu, a slight increase of 6.26 percent compared to last year.

The United States followed third with 21,804 tourists, which included some Balikbayans.

Countries in Europe landed fourth with combined arrivals of 20,356 tourists.
China, which the tourism government targets to attract, only posted 2,624 tourists or 107 visitors more than the same period last year.

Durano said the DOT would bullishly market the country to China, a very lucrative market for corporate tourists who have a bigger spending habit than Koreans.

He added that the country was targeting to attract a total of 3 million tourists for the whole year. The DOT is almost halfway in achieving the target, with 1.5 million visitors arriving in the first five months of the year.

Cebu may not be just limited to water sports. Mountain climbing can be an adventure. For us lowland people who are used to temperatures of 27-30 C , climbing the cold and fog-draped slopes of Mantalongon is a thermal treat. Known as Cebu’s vegetable basket, it is home to the entire island's highest elevation of 2,300 feet. This is what you see up above.

Cebu Pacific to launch direct flights to HK from Cebu, Davao

Cebu Pacific Air, Inc., 49-percent owned by conglomerate JG Summit Holdings Inc., said on Wednesday it will soon launch direct flights to Hong Kong from Cebu and Davao.

The airline said fares for Cebu-Hong Kong and Davao-Hong Kong routes will be priced cheaper by P500.

In a statement, the carrier said it will be offering an introductory seat sale from August 8 to 15.

The Cebu-Hong Kong route will be offered for P1,999 one-way, while the Davao-Hong Kong service will be priced for P2,499 one-way. Travel date for the promo is from October 2 to 25, 2006.

After the seat sale, the Cebu-Hong Kong flight starts at P2,499 one-way while the Davao-Hong Kong flight starts at P2,999 one-way.

Cebu Pacific said it will be operating direct flights from Cebu to Hong Kong four times weekly and Davao to Hong Kong (via Cebu) three times weekly, starting October 2, 2006.

The Cebu-Hong Kong service is scheduled to operate every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday while Davao–Hong Kong route will operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

LONDON -- Filipinos said they engaged in acts of sexual self-stimulation almost six times a week, the most of any nationality.

South Korean men, meanwhile, are having sex more times a week than anyone else in the world, though Brazilian men are at it with a wider range of women, suggests an international survey published Monday.

The poll of 40,000 men for Men’s Health magazine found that Britons spent the most time on foreplay but flopped when it came to endurance.

Mexicans came in first in stamina in the bedroom.

On average, South Koreans said they were having sex at least four times a week.

^^ If it is a meteorite, thank goodness it didn't make a hard impact on any urban place or bisan sa isa ka lungsod. This is not the first time the Philippines has experienced meteorite impacts in known history.

^^ If that's a UFO. Does that explain the blob of red lights floating around the metro last June?

hey rage, i suggest you buy a camera with the larger lens. if you based it on resolution it's useless to have a 5MP with smaller lens than a 4MP with a larger lens. image quality is better if you have a bigger or should i say better lens.

Cebu gears up for big events this weekend

The Freeman 08/10/2006

Cebu will play host to the advisory board meeting and conference of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Advisory Council (ABAC) this weekend.

These big events, to be held in Shangri-La Hotel on Mactan Island, would be graced by no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who will also join officials of Shell Corporation and Ford to announce the ethanol fuel distribution and manufacture of flexi-fuel vehicles Friday morning.

On the same day, Arroyo will meet with 30 chief executives of the top international corporations to discuss how to make the Philippines more competitive for the global outsourcing demand. Major agreements and initiatives by various multinational corporations based in the country will be revealed during the meeting.

On Saturday, the President will deliver a keynote address at the opening of the 10th anniversary conference of the APEC Business Advisory Council. The conference, which will tackle the state of global training system and the progress of globalization and integration of the Asia-Pacific region, will last until Sunday.

Likewise, Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati, economics and law professor at the Colombia University, is also expected to deliver a speech after Arroyo.

Former president Fidel Ramos will also deliver his speech during the second day of the conference on Sunday. After Ramos, Dr. Supachai PanitchPakdi, secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade Development, will also give his message to the participants.

During the two-day ABAC conference, top world economists will give lectures and presentations to delegates from the business, academe and government sectors of the various APEC economies.

Discussions will focus on global trading system, particularly the rise of free trade agreements and World Trade Organization.

Meanwhile, the regional police office will deploy security personnel to secure at least 300 conference delegates and their family members who will also visit several tourist spots in the region.

Regional police director Chief Supt. Silverio Alarcio told The Freeman last week that they were already preparing for the activity.

Police consider the security preparation for the event as "dry-run" for the Task Force Cebu Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit. - Wenna A. Berondo with Edwin Ian Melecio

You take interesting pictures MarkiiBoi. Apparently, you pay attention to details- such as composition, balance, etc.- before you click... hallmark of a true artist. Congrats for the picture-perfect Cebu banner. And thanks for showing the latest of Parklane. I like the blue glass facade of the bldg which compliments the predominantly blue color of the Pagasa bldg flanking the other side of the overpass. I think, both were designed by the same architect. I think too, that the new Tower Palace condo will sport the same blue exterior. Cool.

@sinjin- Sykes Asia is another contact center with Philippine operations in Makati, Ortigas, and Cebu. www.sykes.com

It's two of the first BPO locators here in Cebu along with PeopleSupport. Its current operation is in Manadue.

Wala pang Convergys, Etelecare, etc. etc. Sykes Asia has already been here in Cebu around 2002 or 2003. Followed by PeopleSupport on 2003. Then Convergys, Etelecare and the other players.

Everything for Cebu Wishbone. Taking those pictures are really effortless because the subjects themselves are a thing of beauty, sitting there just waiting to be captured. Beautiful subjects make good artists. Beautiful Cebu makes MarkiiBoi a better photographer. hehehe Thanks for the compliment bro. :)

And about Parklane, yes it's a stunning addition to the growing city skyline. And its blue color is really cool to the eyes, much like the Pag-Ibig (not Pag-asa hehehe) Tower. And yes they are both designed by Guanzon Architectural and Designs.

Cleanest barangay to receive P100T; dirtiest, 'kalabasa'

Gregg M. Rubio, The Freeman

The cleanest barangay in Mandaue City would be given P100,000 while a "kalabasa" (squash) is being readied for the dirtiest in the 2006 Inter-Barangay Clean and Green contest which kicks off on August 15.

The contest would run until December, in time for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit. Barangays would be provided with guidelines and would be evaluated on a monthly basis and winners will receive their awards this December.

On the other hand, Cheryl Ouano, executive assistant of Mayor Thadeo Ouano, yesterday said that a cleanup drive would proceed the launching of ASEAN Foundation Day and the activity would be done every week. -

There was no plane crash or any explosion of an aircraft Tuesday night, the Air Transportation Office said yesterday, after residents in some towns in northern Cebu reported such sightings.

ATO tower chief Manuel Tompar said all the 157 commercial flights between 11 p.m. Monday and 11 p.m. Tuesday were accounted for.

ATO’s thermal radar, which can pick up incoming and outgoing aircraft at an altitude of 20,000 feet and within a 64-mile radius, did not detect any crash.

“Our radar can pick up planes from the northernmost tip of Cebu to the southernmost end. Besides, if planes enter our air space, there is constant communication between the pilot and the tower until the plane lands,” Tompar said.

Tompar said, though, that their radar cannot detect supersonic jets or a falling meteor because these travel faster than sound.
Very bright meteors are known as fireballs.

Some even thought they saw an unidentified flying object.

Weather specialists at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa) in Mactan said the explosion may have been thunder due to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds.

Thunder from cumulonimbus clouds (a massive cloud formation) could be heard two to three kilometers away from its location.

Cumulonimbus clouds are hazardous to air navigation and as soon as they are sighted, Pag-asa informs ATO so aircraft could avoid them.

Cebu Provincial Police Office Director Vicente Loot also said there is no trace of a plane crash or a meteor shower in the northern part of Cebu late afternoon of Tuesday.

A loud explosion past 5 p.m. baffled residents in northern towns.

Loot ordered the police stations in the towns of Tuburan, Tabuelan, Borbon, Bogo and Sogod to investigate, but none reported seeing an object that fell from the sky.

“If an airplane crashed, the impact would not be heard in all towns in the north,” Loot said in a mobile phone interview.

Some residents of Tuburan said they saw a burning object that fell from the sky before the loud explosion.

Police Chief Rolando Yballe said people in the town were talking about the object but when they were asked where it fell, nobody could guide them.

PO1 Mariano Cajes of the Tabuelan police station said he and two other policemen were on patrol in Barangay Tabunok when they heard a powerful explosion.

Two weather experts from Pag-asa explained that cumulonimbus clouds could produce a thunder that can be heard within a radius of two to three kilometers.

“It is an air hazard cloud and we immediately inform ATO when we detect it in order to guide an aircraft from flying near it,” Vangie Tolentino and Jun Amarillo said.

Tolentino said cumulonimbus clouds gather its strength by absorbing more water from the sea and as they become bigger, they create thunderstorms and heavy downpour.

Large cumulonimbus clouds are associated with powerful thunderstorms known as supercells, which produce frequent lightning, large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.

These thunderstorms tend to develop during the afternoon and early evening when the effects of heating by the sun are strongest.

CEBU

Cebu is one of the provinces of the Philippines. It lies to the east of Negros Island; to the east is Leyte and to the southeast is Bohol province. It is flanked on both sides by the straits of Cebu (between Cebu and Bohol) and Tañon (between Cebu and Negros). Cebu is located between 9°25'N and 11°15'N latitude and between 123°13'E and 124°5'E longitude in the center of the archipelago.

Cebu Island is a long narrow island stretching 225 km (140 mi) from north to south, surrounded by 167 neighboring smaller islands, that includes Mactan Island, Bantayan, Daanbantayan, Malapascua, Olango and the Camotes Islands. Of the hundreds of small islands some are uninhabited which make them the targets of adventure-seeking tourists.

Cebu is known for its narrow coastlines, limestone plateaus, and coastal plains, all characteristics of a typical tropical island. Cebu also has predominant rolling hills and rugged mountain ranges traversing the northern and southern lengths of the island. Cebu's steep mountains reach over 1,000 meters. Flat tracts of land can be found in towns of Bogo, San Remigio, Medellin, and Daanbantayan at the northern tip of the province.

Its capital is Cebu City, the oldest city in the country, which forms part of the Cebu Metropolitan Area together with 4 neighboring cities Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, Talisay City, Danao City and 8 other municipalities. Cebu is served by Mactan-Cebu International Airport in Mactan Island, thirty minutes drive from downtown Cebu City.

Cebu is one of the most developed provinces in the country and the main center of commerce, trade, education and industry in the central and southern parts of the archipelago. It has five-star hotels, casinos, white sand beaches, world-class golf courses, convention centers, and shopping malls. The UK-based Condenast Travellers Magazine named Cebu the 8th best Asian-Pacific island destination in 2005, and 7th in 2004.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport in Mactan Island has regular direct flights to Hongkong, Singapore, Japan, Kota Kinabalu, Narita, Seoul and Qatar. There are also chartered and extra flights to Incheon, Taipei, Kansai, Nagoya and Kaoshiung and direct transfer flights via the capital's NAIA that readily connects the city to other destinations in the world.

With the number of weekly international flights to and from MCIA increasing, a new international terminal will be constructed starting 2006 and will be completed in four years after which the existing 15 year old terminal, which houses the domestic and international wings and has a capacity of 2 million passengers, will be purely devoted for domestic use. Air freight to and from Cebu is reliable and efficient with major international couriers like DHL, UPS, FedEx, TNT and Aboitiz International covering the area.

Crossing at the Cebu Business Park
Ayala Center Cebu in Metro CebuThe Cebu International Port is the biggest and main port of entry in the province of Cebu and Central Visayas Region, nestled in a natural harbor in the narrow strait between Cebu City and Mactan Island, the latter providing natural cover and breakwater, making the port one of the safest and operational the whole year round. Its international port is a multipurpose terminal covering an area of 10 hectares with 690 meters of berthing space and a controlling draught of minus 8.5 meters at MLLW. It has direct ports of call with Singapore and Hongkong. Nearby is the Cebu Baseport Domestic Zone, an area for the domestic transactions for the many islands of the achipelago.

The city mostly gets its power from an interconnection grid with the Leyte Geothermal Power Plant which also powers majority of the Visayas Islands. There are also coal-fired power plants. Distribution of electricity is provided by the Visayas Electric Company (VECO).

Telecommunication facilities in the city are abundant provided by some of the country's largest telecommunication companies. Connections to the internet are also readily available. Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) technology is served in the uptown area of the Cebu City (around 1 kilometer radius) Some coffee shops, hotels and other establishments in the city have also availed themselves of this technology exclusively for their clients.

A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is proposed to be up and running in a few months time and a new Mass Railway Transit (MRT) system for Metro Cebu has been approved in Congress

Ayala Center Cebu is an upscale shopping center within the Cebu Business Park, a prime business and financial center in Metro Cebu that includes Cebu City Marriott Hotel, City Sports Club Cebu and Park Tower Condominiums. Developments and expansions are ongoing to answer the rising demand due to high domestic and foreign tourist arrivals in Cebu. Nearby is the Asiatown Information Technology (IT) Park, another business district that caters mostly to businesses related to the information technology (IT) industry such as software development, telecommunication, call centers, among others.

South of the city is the South Road Properties (SRP) Special Economic Zone, a 330-hectare prime real estate zoned that would house a business district, a tourism zone, and an industrial area patterned after the nearby Mactan Export Processing Zone. Its main thoroughfare is the South Coastal Highway which stretches from downtown Cebu City up to Talisay City down south. A 1.2 kilometer tunnel is currently being constructed at the highway's entrance in Cebu City to connect it with Sergio Osmeña Avenue which traverses the North Reclamation Area connecting with Ouano Avenue at the New Mandaue City.

Government support and incentives provide a major impetus for its growth.

Cebu's labor force is oriented towards non-agricultural lines and is rated one of the most productive. Sinulog. The Sinulog festival is Cebu's biggest and most popular festival. It is celebrated every 3rd Sunday of January. The feast is in honor of the holy image Señor Santo Niño de Cebu. Fiesta Señor, as it widely known, is the most celebrated among Cebu's festivals where people converge along the route of a grand solemn procession and partake in the gaiety amidst a mardigras parade immersed in vivid colors and the constant drums of the Pit Señor.

Paskuhan. A Christmas celebration of songs and lantern making held during the month of December spread good cheers to local residents and visitors alike.

Kadaugan sa Mactan. A one day re-enactment celebrated with pomp and pageantry every 27th of April to commemorate the historic Battle of Mactan between the forces of Lapulapu and Magellan.

Virgin of the Rule Fiesta. Held to honor the patroness of Opon on November 20-21, this religious and social event reveals the deep religious faith of the people and the penchant for merry making. A food fair, a procession and a coronation of the Fiesta Queen highlight the festivity.

Semana Santa sa Bantayan. A unique mixture of solemn religious rites and local celebration highlights the Holy Week activities in Bantayan Island. The normally quiet island is visited by relatives and friends of the residents, as well as tourists to experience the scenic rites and to cool off the summer heat in the beautiful white sandy beaches and clear tropical waters.

Fiesta sa Carcar. Is celebrated on November 24-25 in honor of the town's patron, St. Catherine of Alexandria. Carcar town is noted for its old Spanish style houses in the quiet countryside setting. During fiestas, the residents would invite friends, relatives and town visitors into their homes to taste popular local delicacies. A lively and enjoyable event.

Tagbo. Poro, Cebu - Celebrated every January in honor of Patron Santo Niño de Poro. Beloved memoir of a living past, Tagbo is the cornerstone from which this great municipality has sprung. Rich in cultural heritage and deep in spiritual values, Tagbo is a very significant event preluding the birth of a town every dear to the hearts of her sons and daughters.

Sanayon. Agro-tourism festival in the southern towns of the second district about 100 km from the city. A month-long activity to spread out tourism to the coutryside.

Five Japanese IT firms plan to invest in Cebu
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 11:20am (Mla time) 08/10/2006

FIVE Japanese information-technology companies have expressed interest in expanding their operations to Cebu, according to Cebu Investment Promotion Center (CIPC) managing director Joel Mari S. Yu.

The Tokyo-based companies were identified as Bell Net Co. Ltd., ISFnet Co. Ltd., Sahara Systems Japan, Data Application Co. Ltd. and CyberTech Corp.

While these companies plan to set up only small operations here, Yu said this is ideal for Cebu since it has yet to build its capability to serve their skills requirement.

"We don't really have the capability to provide 2,000 programmers, for example," he said.

Attracting these companies will help Cebu show that it can handle IT investments, other than call centers and business process outsourcing, Yu said.

Bell Net, a software engineering company, is engaged in such IT services as computer system operational support, helpdesk and desktop service, IT consulting and educational service, streaming site production and digital broadcast content production.

It has already set up a temporary office in Cebu, with a P10 million capitalization, 10 full time staff and 160 contract IT engineers and designers, Yu said.

Bell Net chief executive officer Toshio Osada, sales director Masaru Ajito and project division manager Nino Perol (a Filipino IT engineer) met with Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña during the latter's visit to Tokyo last June.

The company is looking for IT engineers with Java and C++ language skills and technical support and maintenance engineers for desktop with Japanese language level 2 skills, he said.

The ISFnet, with a capitalization of $1.6 million and 1,600 employees, offers consulting, system design, software development, hardware, computer system management and other IT-related services.

The company plans to hire and train engineers for three years and set up a training school here later, he said.

The Sahara Systems is engaged in software consulting, IT recruiting and software products.

Yu said the company has asked for CIPC's assistance in setting up partnerships with different universities in Cebu to develop Unix (or Uniplexed Information and Computing Service, a computer operating system) and Japanese language courses. The company plans to come up with four-year Unix course and hire qualified graduates of this course.

The company is offering its Unix box for free to different Cebu universities in return for acknowledgement of their contribution, he said.

Yu said CIPC is getting in touch with different schools and universities in Cebu and arranging meetings with different government and nongovernment agencies involved in IT development. Sahara Systems executives will be coming in September or October this year, he added.

The Data Application Co. is a provider of various products including communication middleware and other IT support services. Its core business is network systems development. It has 50 employees and has a capitalization of 200 million yen.

Data Application president and chief executive officer Keita Hashimoto, corporate strategic planning and administration director Sadakazu Nagai and manager Shigeru Yoshida met with Osmeña and the Cebu City delegation in Tokyo last June 26.

Yu said the company plans to start its project here by October this year.

The CyberTech Corp., which has an 80-million yen capitalization, is involved in the development of the world's first commercial XML native database Cyber Luxeon and the development of XML database using middleware.

XML stands for extensible markup language, a simple and flexible text format designed for use in large-scale electronic publishing. It is also used in the exchange of data on the Web.

Centcom move to Balamban pushed

Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:46am (Mla time) 08/10/2006

THE Cebu provincial government will ask the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to facilitate the “re-declaration” of the areas covered by national park in Balamban town.

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said that this would pave the way for the setting up of a military camp in the area within the reserve for use of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Central Command (AFP Centcom) Headquarters.

Garcia said she would meet with DENR Secretary Angelo Reyes to discuss Capitol's request.

This will be made when the Capitol eventually takes back 80 hectares presently being occupied by the Centcom headquarters in Cebu City.

Governor Garcia during her State of the Province Address (SOPA) said that she hopes to retrieve the properties and transform them into an economic enterprise for the Capitol through lease.

“This will now be utilizing resources for more revenues to deliver better services,” Garcia said.

The Capitol legal office including Garcia along with officials from the Department of National Defense met in Manila last Monday to discuss the details of the transfer.

The governor said details of the discussions will be revealed in a later date.

She said that they will be signing a memorandum of agreement with the military, which will also include the inclusion of an adjacent lot owned by the AFP to be included in the Capitol's development of their 80- hectare lot.

Garcia said that the military wanted to include their own property so that it will also earn when the Capitol lots eventually gets developed.

The governor said that the AFP wanted the earnings for their properties to be used as additional funds for its modernization program.

Despite all the issues confronting USC today, this is still undoubtedly the best institution there is outside Imperial Manila that can very well stand up to the challenges posed by any of the best universities there. What it lacks right now is that spark, that moving spirit or, call it what you will, the group-think that will renew the frayed energies of this institution. There is much hope in the horizon. Just last year, the USC Corporation was presented by Fr. Pres. Roderick Salazar, Jr., SVD, with an ambitious but well-grounded master plan prepared by the internationally-recognized architectural and real-estate group Palafox and Associates. The plan seeks to devote portions of the near-100-hectare Talamban campus into academic and commercial zones that will hopefully generate the much-needed revenue to provide the punch that will settle the score on excellence in education.
