Cebu City public information officer Nigel Banacia is urging Cebu City residents specially those who are living north of the city to plant flowering plans in a pot... this is for the preparation for the ASEAN summit. This is in a little way that an ordinary Cebuano citizen can contribute to our city this ASEAN Summit. As the flowers bloom in December, they may put them along the streets infront of their houses for our sreets to look pleasant in the eyes of the delegates. Lets cooperate coz this is our city.

flesh_is_weak August 10th, 2006, 07:41 PM guys, ive been checking out the previous ASEAN summit logos, and i have to say that the current is still better looking compared to most of the previous ones--even if it was not the design preferred by most forumers here--i think only thaliand's logo can surpass it...
oh well, the ASEAN will probably have a reputation of having bad logos--i personally dont like the logo of the ASEAN itself...
oh well, whats with a logo anyway? what matters are the people who make up ASEAN, and that includes us...

Jimbu August 10th, 2006, 07:48 PM Germans mull tourism-related projects
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 08/11/2006
At least five German groups are currently looking forward to put investments in tourism-related facilities in Cebu.
Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Axel Weishaupt said that if the tourism industry in Cebu will boom further, these groups are willing to spend millions of dollars to invest in tourism-related projects here.
Currently, there are indirect investments from German companies in existing hotels or resorts in Cebu, he said aside from possible hotels or resorts investments, German capitalists also expressed interest for a convention facility project.
Weishaupt who was in Cebu yesterday on the occasion of the awarding ceremony on ISO 14001 Certification to the Cebu Common Treatment Facility, Inc., a German-government supported project, said Cebu has a huge potential to attract tourism-related investments from Germany, as well as lure German travelers.
The Ambassador however, refused to divulge the identity of the German groups to invest in Cebu, saying everything is not official yet.
However, he said that interests from German investors for tourism related projects in Cebu are significantly improving.
He said there are a number of successful international hotel/resorts brands here in Cebu, which strongly indicates that investment in tourism related facilities, like hotel or resort projects could be a good move.
In the Philippines, most German-owned investments are into special machinery and semi-conductor industries, most of these operations are located in Luzon area.
German market is consuming Cebu-made products like furniture, food, and fashion accessories.
Although Cebu, or the Philippines has the potential to attract "wealthy" German tourists, he said it should exert more effort to market the country as a destination, in Germany, as most of the Germans are now going to Thailand, Bali (Indonesia), and Palau Island.
He mentioned that the negative publicities of the Philippines abroad has brought the country down, in terms of attracting tourists.
Annually, the German traveling market is spending an average of 20 billion euro for travels, he said number one destination is Thailand, next is Indonesia, the third alternative is the Philippines.
German tourists are a good combination of both luxury travelers and backpackers.
Although Philippines is known in Germany as one of the vacation destinations in Asia, it could be better known if marketing promotions will be intensified in their country.
Germany is the third largest economy in the world, he added that tourism promotion efforts of the Philippines, should be more competitive in Europe or Germany in particular like the other countries in Asia are doing.
Palau Island for instance is now an emerging alternative vacation destination of Germans, as it offers cheaper rates compared to the Philippines, he said.

rage@cebu August 11th, 2006, 05:16 AM Security in Cebu will be tight in the next three days with the arrival of President Arroyo, foreign dignitaries and corporate leaders for the three-day APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) meeting.
Among other activities, Arroyo and ABAC delegates will witness the first demonstration on the use of ethanol as alternative bio-diesel at the Shangri-la’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City.
The President is scheduled to arrive at the Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base (MBEAB) at 9:30 this morning and will proceed to Shangri-la for the formal opening of the meeting, which carries the theme: Revisiting “APEC Means Business.”
Security measures for the event have been in place since Wednesday, Cebu Provincial Police Office Director Vicente Loot said.
He told reporters yesterday that his policemen are ready to secure some 300 delegates and their families during the conference.
Police have called the event a dry run for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in December.
Loot assured the weather will not keep the police from providing security to the delegates, saying his policemen know they have a job to do regardless of the weather condition.
All security details were already at the venue since Wednesday while support groups took their posts yesterday morning.
Security is tight since ambassadors from Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan and New Zealand are also expected to attend the event.
Other guests include world economists Professor Jagdish Bhagwati of Columbia University, Supachai Panitchpakdi, secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) former Phiilippine president Fidel Ramos, Cathay Pacific chief operations officer Tony Tyler and Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corp. chairman Stuart Guilliver.
Arroyo will be joined by five Cabinet members, including Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila, Department of Transportation and Communication Secretary Leandro Mendoza, Ambassador and ABAC Chairman Roberto Romulo, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and Government Media Group Head Cerge Remonde.
The delegates began arriving last Wednesday.
Aside from the venue, police will also be securing hotels and tourist spots in the province in case delegates and their families decide to take a tour of Cebu.
Shangri-la’s General Manager Tim Wright is said to have prepared a reception for the President while Peter Daniel, the president of Ford Asia Pacific and Africa, will give a welcome party.
During the demonstration on the use of ethanol, Daniel will announce the start of his investments in exporting alternative engine oil to Asian countries.
Arroyo is also scheduled to have separate exclusive interviews with Singapore Bloomberg Television chief reporter Haslinda Amin and International Herald Tribune senior regional business reporter Don Greenlees.
At 1:30 p.m. today, a closed-door advisory meeting with ABAC officials and head of the delegations of ABAC’s 10th anniversary conference will be held. (AIV/MEA)
rage@cebu August 11th, 2006, 05:18 AM Five different groups from Germany are looking into investing in tourism-related businesses in Cebu in the next few years.
“Cebu is a potential market,” said Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Philippines Axel Weishaupt.
He declined to elaborate on the identity of the investment groups and their plans in Cebu.
Weishaupt said there is growing interest among German companies to invest in the country because of the Filipinos’ proficiency in English, “reliable” workers and an “okay” taxing system.
He said future investments will most probably go into areas where German investments already exists, such as machineries and sophisticated electronics.
More seats
Although most of the German industries are centered in Metro Manila, he expressed hope that “these will be diverted in other areas.”
“Siemens is planning to add 2,000 seats,” he said during a press conference yesterday on the issuance of an ISO (International Organization of Standardization) 14000 series to the German Government-assisted Cebu Common Treatment Facility in Inayawan, Cebu City.
Siemens moved its customer support service from Singapore to the Philippines sometime in 2003. Its customer support is conducted in the Philippines in partnership with Sykes, which also has operations in Cebu.
Weishaupt also said Germany is a market of the country’s furniture exports, as well as fresh and dried fruits and fashion accessories.
But Weishaupt pointed out that China is still top favorite “investment destination” of German companies, followed by India, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia.
In terms of tourist destination, Bali, Indonesia is still the Germans’ favorite vacation spot because of its “beaches and culture.”
This is followed by the Philippines, Hong Kong and Palau island, since “its cheaper than the Philippines.”
Weishaupt said the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in December will play a major factor in promoting Cebu and the country as a viable destination for tourism and investment.
Policy change
He stressed, though, that for the investments to keep pouring in, several factors need to be addressed.
“There should be a change in (policies on) land ownership so that a foreigner can buy his area for investment,” he said.
He said a certain German investor would have wanted to put up a $15-million investment but was “discouraged” because of the conditions set in the Philippine Constitution prohibiting foreign ownership of land in the country.
Apart from this, Weishaupt said there is also a need to simplify the investment process and cut down processing time of requirements and permits. (MMM)
rage@cebu August 11th, 2006, 05:20 AM “Bringing Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) business to the world” is the theme for this year’s Business and Investment Summit, one of the activities of the Asean summit series in December.
According to a document furnished to Sun.Star Cebu, the Asean Business Advisory Council and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry aim to focus the event, which will be held on Dec. 7 to 10, on the business opportunities within the Asean region, especially the Philippines.
The other events related to the summit are Asean Leaders Summit and the Summit with the Asean Dialogue Partners (China, Korea and Japan.)
Opportunity
The Asean is composed of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
In an interview, Man-daue Chamber of Commerce and Industry Eric Mendoza said the summit would be an opportunity for Cebu to impress the international delegates.
Some 200 seats are being reserved for international delegates—those from outside the Asean region but who have interest in doing business or investing within the Southeast Asia—aside from Asean participants and dialogue partners.
The Business and Investment Summit in Kuala Lumpur last year attracted more than 500 participants from around the Asean region. The highlight of that meeting was the final day— “business meets government” dialogue session with the Asean heads of government as well as those of the three Asean dialogue partners.
A similar dialogue, with improvements using modern communication media, will also be featured in this year’s meeting in Cebu, which will transform the four-day face-to-face meeting into an opportunity for ongoing interaction among delegates through virtual conferencing. (JBN)

Del Mar says opposers can still object
Opponents of the bills seeking to create three more provinces in Cebu still have a chance to raise their objections before the House committee on rules.
If the committee finds the objections meritorious, it may recommend the return of the bills to the committee on local government, explained Deputy House Speaker Raul del Mar (Cebu City, north).
“There’s no cause for panic because these bills still have a long way to go. But there’s a need to be more alert now, and this calls for a more vigorous opposition,” del Mar said in a telephone interview.
Del Mar also said the committee report has to get at least 39 signatures before it can be brought to the committee on rules, because the committee on local government has 77 regular members.
Del Mar and Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district) will join Rep. Antonio Cuenco (Cebu City, south) in campaigning for the other members of the local government committee not to sign the report.
He assured that at every stage from now on, the bills seeking to create the provinces of Cebu del Sur, Cebu del Norte and Occidental Cebu will be subjected to debates where critics can make their objections heard.
Accommodation
Assuming the bills are approved on second and third reading at the House, these still have to go to the Senate, where these will go through the same process all over again, del Mar pointed out.
That’s when the opinion of Sen. Sergio Osmeña III will be “very crucial” because the other senators will consider his stand, considering he hails from Cebu.
Senator Osmeña has not made an official stand on the “Sugbuak” bills yet, but has assured his brother, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, that there will be consultations before the Senate tackles the measures.
“There’s a lesson to be learned here, that in Congress, it’s the barkada system. Whether it’s fair or not, imong hatagan ug consideration imong amigo... It’s a political exercise of accommodation, which is exactly what (Rep. Emilio) Macias is doing,” Mayor Osmeña said.
Congressman Macias of Oriental Negros chairs the House committee on local government and has repeatedly refused to schedule a public hearing on the three bills here in Cebu.
“Over at the Senate, it’s also like the House, if taga Cebu ka, ikaw lang diha, dili mi muhilabot (you take care of it, we won’t intervene),” the mayor added.
Surprised
Osmeña criticized House Speaker Jose de Venecia for being anti-local government and other legislators for not considering what’s best for Cebu.
“What’s important is their own selfish interest. It’s the very reason I’m against this unicameral system and the Charter change proposals,” he added.
Del Mar admitted he did not expect the bills to be passed at the committee level right away, because he thought they still had to wait for the report of the technical working group chaired by Rep. Luis Villafuerte.
Still, that approval can no longer be questioned, because it was a decision made by the committee “with a quorum and is supported by the majority.”
Del Mar, Gullas and Villafuerte failed to attend that hearing because they were busy in another committee, deliberating on the impeachment complaint against President Arroyo.
“The Sugbuak is a very political issue. The different business chambers in Cebu are more concerned about the economic front.
But Cebu Province, as it is, is already doing well. We can speak in one voice. Dividing Cebu into three provinces would confuse prospective investors on whom they would talk to if they want to invest in the province,” said Eric Mendoza, president of the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Plebiscite
“The Sugbuak is very parochial. It promotes divisiveness,” he added.
In a radio interview, Macias said he was just doing his job when the committee on local government tackled and passed the bills.
He again denied allegations of railroading the bills, saying it has been more than a year since these were referred to his committee.
But even if the bills survive the Senate, the President may still veto them and then “that will be gone, because both houses do not usually override the veto,” said del Mar.
If the bills somehow survive the legislative mill and are enacted into law, there will be a plebiscite where residents of the province “including those in other districts not affected by the bill will be called to vote,” said del Mar.
Rep. Simeon Kintanar (Cebu, 2nd district), one of the three proponents of the bills, confirmed in a radio interview that the bills still have to go through a long process.
“Kon mas daghan di uyon sa atong baruganan, di matuman ang atong gusto (If those against it outnumber those who are for it, then what we want will not be realized),” he said.
Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia has said she will fight the bills every step of the way but, “since it is a war, I will not broadcast my next step.”(MBG/With LCR & JBN)

MarkiiBoi August 11th, 2006, 07:24 PM 'Better English' of Cebuanos seen as edge in outsourcing
The Freeman 08/12/2006
Ambassador Roberto Romulo said the Cebuanos' ability to speak "better English" than others from other provinces serves as their competitiveness edge in developing Cebu as a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) hub.
This as one of the thrusts of the APEC Business Advisory Council is the continued development of BPO sector, and which was discussed during the opening of the three-day ABAC meeting held at Shangri-La Mactan yesterday.
Romulo, who is also the chairman of ABAC and the presidential adviser on competitiveness, said that development of BPO sector in the country is really impressive considering that there are now more than 100 call centers employing around 200,000 employees as against the meager four call centers and approximately 1,000 or 2,000 employees when the country first engaged in the BPO sector in 2004.
Although India is taking the lead in the BPO sector, Philippines can also offer a good competition by developing BPO not only in the call center industry but also in party logistics, supply chain management and knowledge management, such as in medical tourism.
In line with this, Cebu is going to be developed as the BPO hub in the country.
"There's one key here which I'm scared to say because Manila will get mad at me. You speak English here. And you speak better English here than any other provinces in the country. So I think that's a big plus as far as BPO is concerned," Romulo said in a press briefing yesterday morning.
In relation to this, Romulo said the private sector task force has been tapped by President Gloria Arroyo to formulate a master plan on how we can be internationally competitive in the BPO sector.
The president delivered her opening and keynote address during the 3rd ABAC meeting and 10th ABAC anniversary conference yesterday morning.
"The private sector will take the lead and the government will enable," he said.
In addition, Romulo said the airline connections here in Cebu "is fantastic".
He said he was impressed to find out that Cebu, which he said "is second to none", has direct flights to Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea and Malaysia.
"And by the way, your airport and processing is something to be emulated by other airports in the Philippines, and particularly Manila," he said.
ABAC also tackled two issues; one dealing on APEC's relevance today and if it is still responsive to the needs of the Asia-Pacific Region and to the business needs, and the other on the suspension of the World Trade Organizations negotiations.
Romulo said the business group was frustrated with this matter considering that it will substantially affect them because instead of the economy turning the world around it is politics doing so.
He said the suspension of WTO negotiations "is a very difficult situation" for the whole world, especially for developing countries, such as the Philippines. -

Dutch firm deems Cebu potential biz launch pad
By Noreen Napoles
The Freeman 08/12/2006
Challenged by the astuteness of the Cebu market, a Dutch company chose to make Cebu its launch pad in doing business in the country.
Chief Executive Officer Richard Shulzer said that choosing business here in Cebu was not only because of its friendly people but also because of what the researches say.
"According to research, if you make it here in Cebu, you make it anywhere else," Schulzer said.
Bickers Group's services held a wine tasting activity at its office at the fifth floor of Ayala-Life FGU Building, as an opening salvo to its numerous launching of products in the next few months.
Bickers Corporation is engaged in international trade facilitation, which includes buyer and seller representation and the hosting of international trade portals focusing on certain specific areas for the reference of foreign as well as local companies who may want to do business. It is being composed of the Bickers Corporate, Bickers Public Solutions, and Bickers Law Firm. However, only Bickers Corporate is exercising business in Cebu City.
The company has already launched its website, www.cebu-market.com, November of last year. They are also soon to launch their magazine in the same month this year.
Joel Cabatas, sales and marketing officer, said that the website of the company serves as a portal designed to provide trade leads and other information such as free corporate and government listings, local and regional events, jobs or classified ads, flea markets, photo albums for sharing of memories and other highly useful information to those who are searching for anything on the web.
The sales and marketing officer also added that www.cebu-market.com is the best venue for advertisements since it provides a comprehensive listing of major information resources, serves as a "one-stop-shop" for web searchers as to what they specifically need in Cebu, and the best and most informative features but has the lowest price rate.
Also a sales and marketing officer, Maria Cristina Adarle elaborated that it is easy to advertise in their webpage. Advertiser could either contact them through phone calls or electronic messages in order to make the proper arrangements. Lay-out would be done by the company but the final approval would come from the advertiser.
Aside from the website, the company's satellite in Cebu would soon engage in the export of wines and flowers.
Bickers Corporation, with its mother company in Netherlands, is a member of the European Chamber of Commerce. It is engaging in liaison services for Calatrasi Wine, which provided the wines for the wine tasting, NTI University in Netherlands, University of Wales, and Robert Kennedy College in Zurich, Switzerland. It also gives services to various companies for personnel selection through web channel and provides consultation on Litigation and International Law on Immigration.

showcases more at the count of four
The Freeman 08/12/2006
The International Academy of Film and Television (IAFT) is in high spirits as its One-Year Immersion Program progresses with Class 4 of 2006 this August 14, with more offerings in store for aspiring filmmakers across the globe.
With a 19,000 square meter campus in Mactan, Cebu, IAFT serves as Bigfoot Entertainment's professional training institution for aspiring filmmakers. It offers a comprehensive curriculum under the direction of mentors who are industry professionals from Hollywood and other film capitals of the world. The program, which consists of five 9-week terms, includes courses on cinematography, editing, directing, screenwriting, producing, filmmaking, sound design, etc, plus a professional show reel upon the completion of the student's final project. Students are also offered a unique internship program with IAFT's institutional partners, affiliate television network Fashion TV, and parent company Bigfoot Entertainment.
This August, IAFT ushers in fresh students who come from as far as Sweden. Equally anticipated is the brim-over of incoming mentors. "We are pleased to announce a new group of highly talented filmmakers from various parts of the world, to teach and offer insight to our students," says Kacy Andrews, CEO of Bigfoot Entertainment. more (http://www.philstar.com/philstar/FREEMAN200608122404.htm)

Actually bai the fountain is still functional. In fact, the fountain has a newly installed pump and it is newly painted. However, every night they turn it on for only a few hours. Yesterday, they turned it off right after the cocktail dinner, or right after we took this pic:

So you have background in furniture design? That's great. Pa-design ng furniture hehe lol
Yeah, I got to watch the report. You have to be proud of his achievements especially the part about being featured in time magazine - now, that's really world class talent. Proudly Pinoy! :okay:
Among those designs presented, I really liked the chair based on the dented coke can. It's amazing where he gets the inspiration for his designs.
Jimbu August 12th, 2006, 07:37 PM Sto. Niño image soon to rise at SRP
The Freeman 08/13/2006
A life-size image Sr. Santo. Niño will soon rise on Kawit Island after the City Council granted businessman Lim Liu's request to create a cultural, historical and religious landmark in the area, which is now part of the South Road Properties (SRP).
Councilor Joey Daluz III, who authored the resolution approving the landmark's construction, said the city government will not spend a single centavo for the construction of the image.
"Mr. Lim Liu, a well known businessman, good Samaritan and civic leader will put up a life-size image of the Sr. Santo Niño not only to pay homage to the patron and divine protector of Cebuano people, but more importantly, to evoke the cultural, historical and religious heritage or history of Cebu City," Daluz said.
Under a proposed plan, the Kawit Island will be utilized as a recreational area inside the SRP.
In Pre-Hispanic times, Cebu was known as "Sugbu" or "Zubu," which was already a port town visited by traders from China, Thailand, the East Indies and the Arabian kingdoms.
When Ferdinand Magellan landed in Cebu on April 7, 1521, its ruler King Humabon gladly welcomed him. Humabon and his queen Juana were later converted to Christianity and at least 400 other subjects followed suit.
Magellan planted a cross and gave Juana a statue of the Santo Niño to commemorate the event. - Garry B. Lao

Hospital offers to build grotto on Kawit Island
Chong Hua Hospital will put up a grotto and an icon of the Señor Sto. Niño at the South Road Properties (SRP).
The Cebu City Council last Wednesday approved a resolution allowing Lim Liu, chairman of the board of directors of Chong Hua Hospital, to build the “cultural, historical and religious landmark” on Kawit Island, which is part of the 295-hectare SRP.
The undertaking will be done at no cost to the City Government.
Liu, a businessman and civic leader, is offering to put up the image near the lighthouse “to pay homage to the patron and divine protector of Cebuanos” and to “evoke the cultural, historical and religious heritage of Cebu City.”
Kawit Island is that part of the SRP that faces the channel, up to the ports. Mayor Tomas Osmeña wants Kawit to be reminiscent of a 19th century poblacion or town center.
The proposed grotto will complement the mayor’s plan, as he wants to build a church with a Spanish era motif that will evoke that bygone lifestyle.
But he also wants to build a yacht club, a wind-surfing pool, two outdoor stages, a museum and two-star to five-star bars and restaurants, making Kawit an entertainment and sports destination.(GAC)

if it's gonna be a life-size statue, that means it won't be that huge... but mind you that the sto. nino icon is quite deceiving... i thought before that the sto nino's height is from the head (with a crown) to the bottom part of it (floor level) but nag tungtong diay na sya!!! natabunan lang sa iyang suot... ang iya tinuod height kay tunga lang sa whole staute...

Jimbu August 13th, 2006, 07:32 PM Gokongwei patriarch leaves half of fortune to charity
By Wilson Lee Flores
The Philippine Star 08/13/2006
Self-made multibillionaire John Gokongwei Jr. is donating half his fortune — at least P20 billion — to charity to mark his 80th birthday and his holding company’s 50th anniversary.
At a dinner reception for 1,500 guests held last Friday at his Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, Gokongwei announced that he would donate half of all his shares in the JG Summit Holdings conglomerate to various charities through the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation.
He said he was doing this "after discussions with my wife and children." On the day of his birthday, the total market capitalization of JG Summit Holdings, Inc. was pegged at P41,462,869,108.
The first recipient of Gokongwei’s donation is his alma mater, San Carlos University in Cebu, which received P50 million for its new Gokongwei School of Engineering.
"Gokongwei Brothers Foundation has donated around P400 million in the last five years and we shall be doing more philanthropy in the coming years," he said.
Gokongwei’s donation is the biggest philanthropic endowment in Philippine history, similar to American tycoon Warren Buffett’s announcement two months ago donating 10 million shares of his Berkshire Hathaway firm to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, run by Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan also recently announced he is donating half his fortune to charities through his own foundation.
Gokongwei told The STAR he admires Hong Kong taipan Li Ka Shing, whose vast charities include major educational causes all over China, Hong Kong and Singapore.
In his speech, Gokongwei said "successes and failures are all part of life. Forget failures. Take them in stride and let them make you stronger. However, if something seems like it’s bound for success, then pour all your energy and resources and focus to make success a reality."
"I will devote the rest of my life to philanthropy. Life has been good to me, and I want to give back the blessings I have received...Others say life begins at 40. I say life is again beginning at 80 for me. And it can only get better," he added.
Philippine processed food exports leader Henson Tiu Laurel told The STAR that "this is the first time in Philippine history that such a big donation to charity has been made. Gokongwei is following in the footsteps of the world’s great philanthropic tycoons Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. It seems Gokongwei is now focused on his name in history and posterity. He will be like Buffett, Gates and the Bank of America founder who chose not to leave all their wealth only to their children."
Born on Aug. 11, 1926 to a privileged family in their colonial-style mansion in Gulangyu isle across Xiamen City in Fujian province, southeast China, Gokongwei grew up in Cebu City.
At age 13, Gokongwei’s idyllic life was abruptly turned upside down when his father died. The family residence in Cebu and his late father’s moviehouses were foreclosed by creditors.
The young Gokongwei had to struggle as a trader on a bicycle and later in sea-going "batel" during the tumultuous Japanese military occupation of the Philippines. His widowed mother and other siblings moved to southern China to survive.
It was the start of an epic entrepreneurial saga, which resulted in the diversified JG Summit Holdings engaged in branded consumer foods, textiles and garments, airlines, petrochemicals, real estate, telecommunications, banking, hotels, electric power plants, publishing, among others.
After officially retiring, Gokongwei assumed the title of "chairman emeritus" of JG Summit Holdings and appointed his youngest brother James Go as chairman and chief executive officer and son Lance Gokongwei as president and chief operating officer.
James Go graduated with a bachelor’s and masteral degrees in chemical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.
Lance Gokongwei graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Applied Science) from Pennsylvania Engineering School and a Bachelor of Science (Finance) from Wharton School in the US, both with summa cum laude honors.
He also attended the management and technology program at the University of Pennsylvania.
Gokongwei’s daughters, New York University-educated Robina Gokongwei-Pe and Columbia University-educated Lisa Gokongwei-Cheng, respectively oversee their family’s retail and publishing businesses, and both are columnists in the Lifestyle section of The STAR.
Among Gokongwei’s major businesses include Jack ‘n’ Jill snack foods, C-2 tea drinks, Great Taste and Blend 45 coffee, Nissin’s and Payless noodles, Robinsons malls, Robinsons Land, Cebu Pacific Air, Sun Cellular, and Summit Media.
Today, JG Summit Holidings, Inc. has given jobs to more than 30,000 families in the Philippines.
Gokongwei strongly believes in globalization and his JG Summit Holdings has in recent years expanded to China and other countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as a multinational conglomerate. Its 50th anniversary theme was "Going Global at 50."
Boldly competing with the world’s top multinationals for the fast-growing China market, JG Summit Holdings has ventures in Xiamen City in Fujian province, Shanghai City, Chengdu City in Sichuan province and also Guangdong province.
Gokongwei admires the visionary leadership of former Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yew and his successor son Lee Hsien Loong.
JG Summit is one of the major shareholders in Singapore-listed United Industrial Corp., which controls Singapore Land Limited and its 2.2-million square feet of prime office spaces and one million square feet of posh retail spaces. UIC’s realty investments include Stamford Court, the sprawling Marina Square shopping and hotel complex, West Mall, The Gateway, UIC Building, and others, including Beijing Landmark Towers and Tianjin Sheraton Hotel in China.
Gokongwei’s three-hour birthday dinner celebration was emceed by television newscaster Karen Davila, organized by Stratworks and directed by Floy Quintos.
Lea Salonga, The Company, Robert Seña, Isay Alvarez, Whiplash dance group and Jay-R performed before guests comprised mainly of family members, JG Summit executives, businessmen, diplomats, bankers and close friends. Foreign diplomats who graced the affair included Singapore Ambassador Lim Keng Hwa and Italian Ambassador Rubens Fedele.
Among the diverse guests were SGV Group founder Dr. Washington SyCip, former prime minister Cesar Virata, clan patriarch Oscar Lopez, Gokongwei-owned Sun Cellular’s competitor Smart Communications’ Napoleon Nazareno, former Bangko Sentral governors Gabriel Singson and Jose Cuisia, Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. president Francis Chua, George Drysdale Sr. of the American Chamber of Commerce, National Bookstore founder Socorro Ramos, Philippine Stock Exchange leader Robert Coyiuto Jr., Antonio Go of Equitable Foundation, Ateneo de Manila University president Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, Ambassador Ramon del Rosario, Oscar Hilado of Phinma Group, Alfred Ty of Toyota Philippines and Tony Tan Caktiong of Jollibee.
There were no politicians at the birthday dinner celebration, except for Gokongwei’s distant relatives Sen. Sergio Osmeña III and former senator Nikki Marquez-Lim Coseteng. Osmeña’s forebear President Sergio Osmeña was the Chinese mestizo son of Gokongwei’s immigrant great-great-grandfather Pedro Gotiaoco of Cebu, while Gokongwei is the eldest male great-grandson of the Chinese family of Pedro Gotiaoco. Other descendants of Gotiaoco include the Sy-Gaisano retail clan of central and southern Philippines, while Gotiaoco’s brother was the grandfather of Filinvest Group and East-West Bank boss Andrew Gotianun. Coseteng’s mother was the Chinese mestiza descendant of
Gokongwei’s immigrant maternal grandfather Pedro Marquez Lim of Iloilo.

gee August 14th, 2006, 07:38 AM Arroyo defers subway project
By Doris C. Bongcac
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:45am (Mla time) 08/14/2006
The planned construction of a subway that would connect the Sergio Osmeña Road to the South Coastal Road (SCR) will be deferred until after the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in December.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ordered the deferment of the project to prevent inconveniences during the summit, said Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.
However, Osmeña said the planned demolition of shanties along S. Osmeña Road, formerly known as McArthur Boulevard, would push through as scheduled.
"Shanties will have to be demolished but the settlers will be provided with relocation," Osmeña said.
At least 80 families would be displaced by the subway construction, a major part of the Metro Cebu Development Project.
City Administrator Francisco Fernandez said some of the affected families have agreed to be relocated to a government relocation site in Barangay Budlaan.
Others have opted to get the P5,000 financial assistance from the city government as disturbance fee.
MarkiiBoi August 14th, 2006, 07:48 AM City's demolition crews to clear 15 streets
Buen Algono
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:56am (Mla time) 08/14/2006
Another set of demolition and clearing operations will be staged on Monday by the Squatters Prevention Encroachment against sidewalk vendors in 15 streets of Cebu City as part of preparations for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in December.
Gerry Marquez, city consultant on urban poor, said the affected areas are:
Osmeña Boulevard,
Colon,
P. Lopez,
Magallanes,
B. Rodriguez,
Fuente Rotunda,
Salinas Drive,
Zamora,
Panganiban,
Natalio Bacalso Avenue,
Borromeo,
Jakosalem,
Sanciangko,
Pelaez,
and Legazpi streets.
The crews will also demolish vendors' stalls on sidewalks along:
Natalio Bacalso Avenue near the Cebu South Bus Terminal,
Panganiban Street abutting the Cebu City Medical Center,
B. Rodriguez Street in front of Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Center,
some parts of General Maxilom Avenue,
and V. Sotto Drive.
Marquez said these areas were declared non-vending streets by the city based on the recommendation by the Cebu City Traffic Operations and Management.
Marquez said the demolition will start after the 15-day period given by Mayor Tomas Osmeña to members of the Cebu City United Vendors Association for them to comply with city regulations.
Only vendors who fail to comply with the regulation on sidewalk vending will be affected by the clearing operations, he said.
Under the regulation, vendors must comply with such guidelines as observing a one-meter distance from the traffic post, limiting the stall's width to two meters, its length to three meters, and maintaining the cleanliness of the area.

Just curious because I've got so many things to learn from the Cebuano culture and I'm very interested. :)

Red- color of the Santo Niño i guess.
Dance - Its the sinulog step, of course in praise of the Child Jesus.
tj_brewed August 14th, 2006, 02:07 PM Happy 32nd Thread! Im sorry for being absent for quite awhile!
tj_brewed August 14th, 2006, 02:11 PM @ bernie
it's the dance step used to praise Sto Nino. This is also being practiced during Sinulog, the dance moves two steps forward and one step backward (with arms and hands swaying) to the sound of the drums. This movement is like that of a current (sulog), resembling the water eddies of Cebu's old Pahina River. Hence, SINULOG! The country's Queen of Festivals!

tj_brewed August 14th, 2006, 04:12 PM we have a Turista Desk within Ayala Center Cebu. You may also visit their kiosk for infos regarding Cebu's travel destinations.
Hmmm........If i were you, I would have this as my itinerary:
Visit the historical sites within the city proper such as the Basilica, USC Main (oldest university in Asia), Fort San Pedro, Magellan's Cross, and Capitol.
Visit the countryside - Boljoon, Dalaguete, Alcoy, Carcar - and see the whitesand shorelines and century old churches and houses.
Cebu is a shopping destination as well. Visit the various malls here in Cebu or check the Taboan Market for danggits. :)
Go to Mactan and enjoy the pristine white sand beaches few minutes away from the business districts of Cebu.
Or check Malapascua Island or Bantayan Island poised to be the next Boracay.

habagatcentral1 August 14th, 2006, 07:09 PM How I wish I didn't left Cebu when I was 3, kon naa lang ko muwang at that time.
Spending 3 years of my early life at Basak Pardo. Took my pre-school days at Labangon and spending my years with my family in NRA then or at Gaisano.
I find people here great. Warm and caring.
The place, terrific. Urban landscape in a very homey atmosphere than back at where I spent my elementary and high-school days (Cavite).
I simply couldn't ask for more here!
I simply love Cebu as much as I love Iloilo and Mindanao. :banana2:
>>Sorry sa senti guys! Just sharing my sentiments. :fiddle:
LordCarnal August 14th, 2006, 07:13 PM In commemoration of John Gokongwei's 80th birthday, I am reposting this speech. It tells us of how this guy went from riches to rags, and then back to riches again. I hope this will inspire all of us to at least work hard for our country's progress.
MR. JOHN GOKONGWEI, JR. ON THE LAUNCHING OF
THE JOHN GOKONGWEI SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT
March 1, 2002
9.00 am - 12.00 pm
Irwin Theatre, Ateneo de Manila University
Good morning.
I am John Gokongwei, Jr. I am not an Atenean but I feel at home with you. Today, at least. Sixty-two years ago, I could not have dreamt of appearing before the Jesuits and their students to tell the story of MY life. I was no more than a student then, at San Carlos University in Cebu, when my father died suddenly. It left me, the eldest, the responsibility of taking care of my mother and five siblings. That was tough for someone who was 13. Creditors had just seized our home and business and I had no experience with earning a living.
But here I am--not all on account of my good looks or charming personality--but because I somehow survived. And when I look back, I know now that I did so because I recognized change when I saw it.
The first change was war. I had turned 15. My mother had already sent my brothers and sister to China where the cost of living was lower. From Cebu, she and I had to make money to send to them.
I turned to peddling. My day began at 5 in the morning. I would load my bicycle with soap, thread, and candles, and then bike to neighboring towns to sell my goods. On market days, I would rent a stall, lay out the goods from the bike, and make about 20 pesos a day, enough for me to survive and to buy even more goods for next time. Those days, you might call my Bicycle Age.

Animo August 14th, 2006, 08:43 PM By JAMES A. LOYOLA
MACTAN, Cebu — Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino (WCCH), the flagship property of publicly-listed hotel operator Waterfront Philippines Inc. (WPI), is spending P60 million for the renovation of 35 suites.
The firm said the renovation of the new designer suites will be completed by the end of October in time for Cebu’s hosting of the ASEAN summit. The hotel recently unveiled its new design concepts for its suites.
Waterfront is optimistic that its new suites will ensure its continued leadership in the lodging and hospitality business in Cebu especially in the First Class Hotel category, as these suites offer innovations in design and comfort that will be introduced for the first time in Cebu.
Designed by world renowned Filipino-designer Anton Mendoza, the new suites are uniquely modern-Filipino, efficient and bear amenities tailored-fit for different guest needs.
The new suites which will come in three categories Executive, Bridal and Executive will all feature furniture designs from the best furniture makers in Cebu, which is famed for world-class furniture designers and manufacturers; as well as designer fabrics and carpets flown in from Italy.
In addition to these, bathroom fixtures and floor marble were imported from the US and Spain.
"Our new suites are a blend of the best of local and imported materials, the design execution of the suites and the furniture are truly Filipino yet imported materials were flown in to manufacture these items" according to the hotel’s General Manager Marco Protacio.
Company managers also add that the new rooms and suites of the hotel will be the biggest in terms of floor area in the Cebu-City market.
The superior rooms will measure up to 40 square meters each, while the Executive, Bridal and Family suites will be measuring 55, 100 and 130 square meters per unit respectively.
"The size of our suites will definitely ensure total guest comfort" said Karen Mendoza, the hotel’s Front Office Manager.
To add to the luxurious furnishings of the suites, Waterfront also spruced up the amenities of each suite.
After conducting extensive marketing research on its clientele’s needs and preferences, the suites’ amenities were tailor fitted to accommodate each market segments preferences thereby making the designs efficiently guest-friendly.
With the travelling businessman in mind the hotel operator equipped its Executive Suites with personal fax machines, flat-screen computers with high-speed broadband Internet access and premium coffee making facilities.
Complimentary use of the fitness center and complimentary laundry and shinning services were also added in to the said suite category.
The Bridal Suites on the other hand were furnished with in-room Jacuzzis and state-of-the-art entertainment systems. Newly wed couples will also be pleased with the breakfast-in bed and romantic bed-turndown services offered by the hotel when staying in the Bridal Suites.
The biggest suite category, the Family Suites will feature two bedroom units with separate bathrooms and child-friendly amenities.
As the hotel targets traveling families, the Family Suites were furnished with child-entertainment amenities such as play stations; and toddler-friendly amenities such as cribs, baby tubs and sterilizers.
In addition to these personalized amenities all the suites will feature the hotel’s new "Slumber Splendor Beds" that features goose feather pillows and duvets, guarantying its well-heeled guests a goodnights’ rest.

ASEAN Summit preparations going well says organizers
Cristina C. Birondo
The Freeman 08/15/2006
Preparations for the upcoming 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in December are going well, according to the Cebu Organizing Committee, headed by Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr. and Governor Gwen Garcia.
The committee, during a press conference yesterday after their 3-hour meeting, announced that the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) is already 66.65 percent complete and is ahead by around 2 weeks in its work schedule.
CICC architect Manuel Guanzon also said 95 percent of the structural requirement is ready and these will be immediately erected once delivered at the construction site.
The governor said the CICC can be completed by the first week of November because the province has the money to spend for it.
The governor intends to endorse to the Provincial Board the supplemental budget that covers the additional funds needed for the entire project.
Vice Governor Gregorio Sanchez, whose professional background on engineering has been constantly relied upon by the governor, said the province needs an additional budget of around P175 million to complement the original P250-million budget for the said project.
Ambassador Paynor, who is also the secretary general of the ASEAN-National Organizing Committee (NOC), also said everything is on stream as far as ASEAN Summit preparations are concerned.
He said all of the sub-committees have given reports on hotel accommodations, transportation, CICC, airport and security management, whole government logistical and operational situations for the summit during their meeting yesterday afternoon.
And to allay fears on shortage of hotel rooms for the foreign guests and other delegates, Paynor said there are more than enough hotel rooms and that hotels just need to priorities foreign delegates.
There are also around 2,500 media practitioners, a combination of international, national and local, expected to cover the event.
He said they are still trying to get more rooms for foreign delegations and their support staff and that they also need billeting areas for additional security from the PNP, Armed Forces and PSG.
He said the Department of Tourism is in the process of identifying all available hotel rooms but stressed that they have not yet gone to the extent of going to homestay programs.
Major hotels in Cebu have been asked already not to accept bookings for the duration of the summit, from December 10 to 14.
Paynor said part of the back-up plan is to request for some floating hotels, meaning big ferries that are to be docked in Cebu ports to be utilized as temporary quarters of the support staff for the duration of the summit. -
