Cebu’s pristine white beaches could attract high-spending tourists from Europe, specifically Germans.

But according to German Ambassador Axel Weishaupt, more aggressive promotional efforts could increase the island's chances to attract German tourists, whose global travel spending amounts to 20 billion Euro every year.

“Cebu is already known for German travelers, but it would be much better known,” he said, citing the lack of promotion about Cebu in Germany.

The German tourists, who go for luxury and backpacking trips, accounts for the biggest number of visitor arrivals the country received from Europe.

About 4,742 German tourists visited Cebu alone in the first five months of the year, the highest in European tourist arrivals for the island.

Weishaupt said Cebu could attract more German tourists if proper promotions would be implemented.

The ambassador said the country's overall negative image on security is affecting the perception of German tourists about Cebu.

He said Cebu should be promoted in a way that it would be cleared from country's negative image, such as bombings, floods and political instability.

Weishaupt said it would not be hard since some Germans recognize the island as an ideal destination.

In fact, bigtime investors from Germany are eyeing to put up tourism-related infrastructure in Cebu.

He added that Cebu's booming tourism industry also needs to compete with other tourist destinations in Asia.

In Asia alone, the Philippines ranks third as most preferred travel destination of Germans. Thailand and Bali, Indonesia are the first two favorite destinations.

He said the Philippine government should find ways to take advantage of Germany's huge tourist market.

Hi guys! I'm new here..... First off, I'd like to share some photos to all forumers in this thread which I took in Taipei using my cheap SAMSUNG DIGIMAX....heheheheh...see the quality...cheap cam it is. As an OFW, I get some perks for travel and get to see real skyscrapers in cities like Taipei which holds the record as of now, having the tallest building in the world and in city like Riyadh where I'm currently working. Though, Riyadh has few buildings but there is one tower which is the 33rd tallest building in the world. How I wish that one day CEBU would have these super structures.... though, it's a long shot but I'm very optimistic about Cebu's economy. Here are the pics:

This is TAIPEI 101. The base of the tower, about 6 storey serve as a mall called 101 MALL, has all the signature buotiques but mind you, prices can cause you a fortune. Pwerteng mahala, wala gyud ko kapalit bisan usa lang ka souvenir sa 101 Mall.
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m195/diehardbisdako/taipei_101_pic4.jpg

This is the TAIPEI SUBWAY. When I went to Taipei in May this year, it was the time when the movie DA VINCI CODE was being shown in theaters. You see, this is a very clever advertising strategy! Nalingaw gyud ko og tan-aw nga ang whole stretch sa train is wrapped up with this Da Vinci Code ad. Ang minimum nga bayad sa pinakaduol nga station like up to 3 stations is only TW$20 or about 33 pesos.
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m195/diehardbisdako/taiwan_subway_dressed_in_davincicod.jpg

This is WARNER VILLAGE. This complex houses more than 20 cinemas and bars & restaurants. And the cinema ticket price?....depende sa movie... when I watched MI:3, I paid TW$235 or kung i-convert nimo to peso, it's about P400. But when I watched Da Vinci Code, I paid TW$260 or about 440 pesos. Ang nakanindot lang kay all cinemas have ala "lazy-boy" seats but gagmay lang ang size sa theaters, about 100-person capacity lang.
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m195/diehardbisdako/warner_village_cinema_center.jpg

The following Riyadh pics which I downloaded from the internet because many places in Riyadh has this sign: "PLEASE, NO PHOTOGRAPHY". Sus, sitahon unya ko sa police or gwardiya kung magpicture-picture ko. Na!, mapriso gyud ko walay oras. Anyway, here are the pics:

This is the KINGDOM CENTER, about 5 minute drive from my place in Riyadh. In late 1999, I had seen when they started building this tower. Now, it houses the 4-Seasons Hotel or locally known as Mamlaka Hotel. It has a mall on the base of the tower and it houses high-end stores such as Marks & Spencer (which we also have in Cebu), Debenhams, Saks 5th Avenue and a branch boutique of Monique Lhuillier (a Cebuana, of course). The topmost floor serves as the viewing deck which gives a 180 degree (each side) breathtaking view of Riyadh City. The deck is open to the public but there is a viewing fee of SAR25 or about 345 pesos but it was worth it and it was really awesome!.....sus, nang-gilok akong tiil kay tan-awa ra gud ng viewing deck kay na-a suspended sa center....feeling nako, mura ko'g mahulog!... hehheheheh! By the way, this is the tower I'm talking about which is the 33rd tallest building in the world.
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m195/diehardbisdako/kingdom.jpg

This is FAISALIAH TOWER, about 10 minute drive from my place in Riyadh. It houses Faisaliah Hotel with 3-level mall beside it with high-end boutiques and shops. I've been to this hotel's restaurant and mall but I haven't been to their viewing deck..... pohon!
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m195/diehardbisdako/riyadh-1-large.jpg

Also, here are other pics of Taipei 101. The 1st pic which I took from the internet while the 2nd pic, I took it using my own cam:

FYI: The main reason that hinders big investors to invest in the Philippines particularly in Cebu is the land ownership issue. Unless Congress repeals or amends a provision limiting foreign ownership of land, the country would except limited progress and just dream of having those big capitalist to really pour in huge amounts of dollar investment in the Philippines. There are many European investors that are eyeing Cebu as their investment site, however, they are constraints like the foreign ownership of land issue, red tape, etc.

Our country particularly Cebu is rich in natural and mineral resources but we need political leadership in order we can move forward and progressively compete with our ASEAN neighbors. It's good to know that political will among leaders in Cebu are heading forward to political and economic maturity.

The efforts exerted by the entire team of Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) to gain three ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certifications have borne fruit as the Ayala Land-affiliate posted a 106 percent growth in its net income for the first half of this year.

In an interview yesterday, CHI executive vice president and chief operating officer Francis Monera said the company’s net income for the said period increased to P114 million from P55.3 million in the same period last year.

CHI reported a 69-percent increase in revenues for the period to P480.3 million from P283.9 million for the same period in 2005, according to the Business World, quoting the firm’s report to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“Aside from the growth in revenues from all our product lines, we also attribute the income growth to the efficiency of our operation (due to our efforts to get the ISO certifications),” Monera said.

CHI was awarded three ISO certifications for quality, environmental management and occupational health and safety in April this year. It started to work for the certification in May 2004 yet.

More opportunities

“The process of getting ISO certification has galvanized our people to work together in a completely different way. We’ve seen more opportunities for improvement and for creating value for our customers.” Jaime Ayala, CHI board chairman and Ayala Land Inc. president earlier said.

Monera said CHI’s earnings was derived largely from the commercial operations of the Ayala Center Cebu (ACC), which accounted for some 43 percent or P206 million of CHI’s total earnings in the first half of the year.

Other earnings were derived from CHI’s other products—commercial lot sales at Cebu Business Park, sale of remaining condominium units, residential sale of Amara and sports club shares.

“Judging from this performance, there is a very high optimism that we will even exceed our target for the year,” Monera said.

“We even expect more growth in the future, especially in retail, as ACC is set to expand and is foreseen to derive more revenues as a result of the continuing priming up of Cebu Business Park (CBP),” he said.

There are currently six ongoing constructions by locators, including the twin-structure of Lexmark Research and Development Corp., a 20-story residential condominium, a 14-story information technology building, one building for an insurance company and another for a bank.

Monera said more locators have also expressed their plans to start construction at CBP.

Sustain

He said CHI is set on sustaining development and market leadership in the residential market with the subsequent phases of Amara and in the retail front through expansion of additional lease areas and improvement of operations at ACC.

“As a company, CHI will be strengthening its organizational capability by living up to the triple ISO certification it recently received.

“ISO is a continuing journey to improve internal business processes, the way we do quality business and how we deal with our customers. It is a set of disciplined processes to ensure that quality is always in everyone’s job and customer is always first,” Monera said. (JBN)

‘Turn Cebu into a big stage’

By Kathy Navarro
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:41am (Mla time) 08/16/2006

Some areas in Metro Cebu will be converted into big stages with actors wearing different types of Filipino attire from the “bahag” or g-string to women’s ternos as part of the cultural offerings for foreign delegates and their wives who will arrive for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in December.

According to Cebu City first lady Margot Osmeña, the summit will not only be a political event but also a showcase of Cebu's rich history and culture.

Osmeña has been meeting with Mandaue first lady Linda Ouano and Lapu-Lapu City first lady Paz Radaza to plan how to entertain the wives of the foreign ministers and heads of states.

Their initial plans were already shown to first gentleman Mike Arroyo, who approved them, she said.

The preparations for the delegates’ spouses were discussed in a media forum on Tuesday at Parklane Hotel.

Nagiel Bañacia, Cebu City Hall protocol officer, said stages will be mounted in selected historic spots to show examples of life in Cebu in its early history.

The wives of the visiting dignitaries will be moving around Lapu-Lapu, Cebu and Mandaue cities to see the reenactment of different periods of Cebu, he said.

On the first day of the summit, the VIP spouses will ride a calesa or horse-drawn rig from Shangri-La's Mactan Island Resort and Spa to the Mactan Shrine to watch the reenactment of the Battle of Mactan.

After the show, the visitors will be treated to a Cebuano-style lunch together with a cultural presentation.

In the evening, a tour of Cebu City will provide a glimpse of Spanish colonial times.

A big stage in Malacañang sa Sugbo, Plaza Independencia and Fort San Pedro will depict a typical Cebuano village, Mrs. Osmeña said. Other offerings include a reenactment of the American occupation with the Capitol grounds as the stage.

The city tour will bring visitors to Fuente Osmeña and to downtown Colon Street, the oldest street in the Philippines where Chinese traders did their business along the sidewalks.

Mandaue City will show the visiting spouses the face of modern Cebu.

Mrs. Ouano said she will tap all makers of fashion accessories in Cebu for the gifts that will be given to the international guests.

If you mean resembling to that of Makati, then i guess it would be Barangay Luz because it is where Cebu Business Park is located.

Banilad is also a baranggay by the way? I also thought Mabolo and Banilad are competing "posh" zones.

MarkiiBoi
August 16th, 2006, 06:59 AM
Yeah, Banilad is a barangay, and is way "poshier" than Mabolo. It is where Gaisano Country MAll, Banilad Town Center, GQS Plaza and Northgate Centre are located. But i think a part of CBP is in Mabolo, and so is SM.

12th ASEAN Summit: No cap on budget for foreign media
The Freeman 08/16/2006

The city government's projected expenditures for the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit has already gone beyond the P20 million approved by the city council but Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday said no ceiling is being put in place on expenditures for the foreign media who will cover the event.

Of the P20-million budget, about P10 million is projected to be spent for the foreign media who will come to Cebu for the four-day event. Osmeña said that aside from the accommodations here in Cebu, the city government also plans to bring interested foreign media to Bohol after the summit.

However, the final budget for the foreign media will depend on the assessment of the two Filipino diplomats to Japan the city has requested to be detailed here in Cebu to help the city government deal with the foreign media.

Osmeña has requested Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo to allow consul Lilibeth Pono and foreign information officer Flordelia Balite to be detailed here in the city during the summit.

The mayor said Pono and Balite "possess excellent credentials, substantial experience and the necessary linguistic skills and connections" deemed crucial to the success of the program for media people who will cover the ASEAN Summit.

Pono, a native of Cebu, used to work with the city government before she joined the country's diplomatic corps. She is currently the Philippines' cultural officer to Tokyo. Balite, who hails from Bohol and who married a Cebuano, has been handling media affairs in Tokyo since 2000 in her capacity as foreign information officer.

Pono and Balite are expected to give a seminar on diplomatic protocol for those who will be involved in the preparations of the summit.

When here in Cebu, Pono and Balite will be engaged in "media coordination activities" considering that the city government is primarily tasked to handle the foreign media covering the four-day event.

With 17 heads of state gathering, at least a thousand foreign media are expected to arrive here for the summit.

The city government is willing to provide counterpart funding for the expenses of Pono and Balite such as those for coordination, communication and transportation. The city will also handle their airfare to Cebu and back sometime in October for a week-long consultative meeting with their local counterparts.

The city is currently doing its best to pull down to P20 million the P34-million projected budget for the summit. The P29-million allocation for the 29 mountain barangays that will avail of the "Balik Bukid" program, however, will not be part of the P20 million official budget.

The "Balik Bukid" program is a security measure to minimize the number of people in the city during the four-day event.

No less than first gentleman Mike Arroyo attended the switching on of the digital clock at the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda that started the city's countdown to the ASEAN Summit. - Joeberth M. Ocao

No second-hand materials at CICC says Vice Governor

The Freeman 08/16/2006

Vice Governor Gregorio Sanchez has denied the allegations made by former senator John Henry "Sonny" Osmeña that second-hand structural steel beams are being used in the ongoing construction of the Cebu International Convention Center.

Sanchez said this is very unlikely to happen because of "very strict monitoring" by the project monitoring office.

Substandard materials are not allowed in the project, Sanchez said. In fact, the provincial government has hired another contractor to conduct material testing on everything used in the construction to ensure its soundness.

"Dunay mga test machine nga gigamit," Sanchez said over DYLA.

Architect Manuel Guanzon, who supervises the project, said that it is impossible for the contractor to utilize leftover steel beams allegedly from the South Reclamation Project because the SRP did not use steel beams. Guanzon believes Osmeña may just be "kidding".

Sanchez said despite the negative effect of the statement on the project and on the integrity of Capitol officials and the contractor, they are not taking any legal action against the former senator.

"Di na angayang hatagan og pagtagad," Sanchez said.

According to Sanchez, they do not want to be disturbed by the baseless allegations because they have a deadline to meet. The CICC will be the venue for the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in December.

Developers said the project will be completed before the scheduled summit. The roofing of the project is expected to start next month. - Fred P. Languido

Cebu taxi drivers to undergo "visitor-friendly" training for Asean Summit
PIA Press Release
08/15/2006

Cebu City (15 August) -- Department of Tourism (DOT) Usec. Phineas Alburo bared over 2,500 Cebu taxi and car rental drivers will undergo training on how to be customer-friendly with thousands of foreign delegates and visitors flocking here for the upcoming 12th Asean Summit.

In a program dubbed 'Visitors-Friendly Taxi Service for the Asean Summit,' Cebu drivers will be oriented for two hours that will cover providing essential information such as tourist destinations, hotlines, religious and cultural sensitivities and road safety. Another two hours will be on personal hygiene and work values orientation. The start of the training program is on September 4.

At the end of the four-hour training period, the drivers will be issued with identification cards and certificates, Alburo said.

Alburo said only taxi drivers that have been issued certificates can carry delegates during the Asean event. Alburo said they are planning to talk to the big malls like Ayala and SM as well as the hotels to allow only certified drivers in their area.

Although the need for the program basically stemmed from the Asean event, Alburo however said the program will go beyond the Asean Summit as part of the long-term plan is for drivers to be in uniform.

Apart from the drivers, Alburo said they are closely talking with car and bus rental operators for uniform rates amid talks rates of car and bus rental will shoot up because of the Asean event.

The 'Visitors-Friendly Taxi Service for the Asean Summit' will be announced in a press conference slated this afternoon at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), one of the cooperating agencies of the program

Other agencies involved in the program are the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Land Transportation Office and the Metro Cebu Taxi Operators Association. (PIA-Cebu/FCR)

Governor thumbs down land swap, eyes commercial value

By Dale G. Israel
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:41am (Mla time) 08/16/2006

Eviction from densely populated Barrio Luz is shaping up as a worrisome scenario for many families living there.

After issuing notices to vacate last month, the Provincial Capitol insists on recovering 16 hectares because of the high commercial value of the land.

Offers of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña to spare Barrio Luz and instead accept a swap of some other vacant city-owned properties have not met success.

“I already expressed to Mayor Tommy (Osmeña) that we can discuss on a case-to-case basis (the other lots), but those lots right across the Grand Convention Center, dako na kaayo na ug value and we would like to recover that,” said Governor Gwendolyn Garcia in a press conference last Friday.

The site she referred to in Barrio Luz is within a kilometer’s distance from Cebu Business Park, a busy commercial zone.

Barrio Luz was originally an urban poor relocation site for victims of a big fire in Cebu City that left thousands of families homeless in April 1956.

Today, the barangay has total land area of 20 hectares, a population of over 14,000, and a thriving community life with its roadside flower shops and other mixed businesses.

Famous landmarks include a portion of the Cebu Business Park, the Bureau of Internal Revenue Regional office and San Carlos Seminary Mayor and Minor.

RELOCATION

The best thing affected Barrio Luz residents can do is to ask for a relocation site, Provincial Board Member Juan Bolo said Tuesday.

“Ang ilang mabuhat ana kay muhangyo na lang sila ni Mayor Tomas (Osmeña) nga ipahangyo si Governor Gwen nga ma relocate sila,” said Bolo, chairman of the Provincial Board committee on properties.

The recovery of province-owned land is a major thrust of Garcia’s administration to turn real estate into revenue-generating “economic enterprises”.

The Capitol already issued notices to vacate last month to 135 families living in Lots 1, 2, and 3 in Barrio Luz. They will be given 30 days to move out. After this period ends in September, the provincial government will go to court to file a complaint for ejectment.

“The period for negotiations was over when Vice Mayor (Michael) Rama accused the Capitol of ‘dawat lang ug limpyo,” said Pablo John Garcia, Capitol consultant.

He was referring to the vice mayor’s earlier objections to exchanging vacant city-owned lots for province-owned properties already occupied by urban poor settlers.

Garcia said reviving talks would be difficult at this stage after the lot-swap negotiations with Cebu City failed early this year.

The governor, meanwhile, echoed the consultant’s displeasure over the vice mayor’s remarks.

“The last word we heard from the council is, ‘dawat ra man ug limpyo ang probinsya ani’,” Governor Garcia said.

“I would just like to remind the occupants that the negotiation at this point is quite impossible if we consider the fact that the City Council's stand is that the lot swap agreement was a deal that was grossly disadvantageous to the city and that the province was taking advantage of the situation and we are made to look like swindlers,” she added.

In case negotiations are revived, she said it would only cover to province-owned lots covered by Provincial Ordinance 93-1. No swap will apply to the Barrio Luz lots.NO MORE

Board Member Bolo said that there will be no more negotiations because of the governor’s priority to use these properties for economic enterprises and revenue generation.

He said residents who have not paid or have partially paid amortizations for the lots to the provincial government would be asked to leave.

He explained further that some residents who have fully paid may still be subject to negotiations if the occupied lot would make it difficult for the provincial government to develop lots 1, 2, and 3.

Bolo said the Barrio Luz lots would be bidded out to a third party for rental just like the province-owned land in nearby Banilad would be rented out by a consortium led by Philippine Beijing Motors Corporation.

Bolo estimated rental rates to be at least P35 per square meter per month aside from additional payments that may be negotiated depending on the contract and the decision of the Capitol's Economic Enterprise Council.

As this developed, Governor Garcia said another round of notices to vacate will be issued to 1,400 families covered under Ordinance No. 93-1, which includes lots in barangays Lahug and Kamputhaw.

A separate complaint for ejectment will also be filed for settlers along B. Rodriguez Street near the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center after the lapse of the 30-day deadline for the notice to vacate.

The Capitol’s legal office will be sending out notices to families in barangays Lahug and Kamputhaw.

Notices will be issued for those who failed to pay land amortization or failed to complete the payment, and those who are new settlers in the province-owned properties.

We went to IAFT (Bigfoot Entertainment in Mactan) just a while ago to preview IRREVERSI... The facility was kind of huge and modern, the door of the main lobby itself was imbedded with a "F" sticker which stands for "Fashion TV."

The movie was kind of nice, I suggest that you all watch it when it will be shown in the theaters... Michael Gleissner also starred in the film..

Speaking of Mike Gleisnner, we were able to meet and talk with him just a while ago.. He also gave us some updates regarding "Cockfight" which will feature Adam Sandler.

Mike was an approachable person after all.

If one of this thread's goals is to entice displaced Cebuanos like me to come home, at least for a visit, then it just succeeded here. After viewing that cascade of pictures by Diehard and Rage, I was overcome by a "kamingaw sa Sugbu" overload. I just decided that I must go home in December so I can totally immerse myself amidst all the hoopla and excitement during the summit. It's no longer enough for me to be watching the excitement on my laptop halfway around the globe. I can't wait to be there.

The planned construction of the P1.2-billion subway that would connect the Sergio Osmena road to the South Coastal Road (SC) will be deferred until after the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in December.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered for the deferment of the project to prevent inconveniences during the Summit, said Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

The subway is set to be constructed under the historic Plaza Independencia, where archaeologists have conducted diggings to explore for artifacts before earth-moving equipment take over the area.

However, Osmeña said the planned demolition of shanties along S. Osmeña road, formerly known as McArthur Boulevard, will push through as scheduled.

”Shanties will have to be demolished but the settlers will be provided with relocation,” the mayor said.

At least 80 families will be displaced by the subway construction, a major part of the Metro Cebu Development Project.

Cebu City Administrator Francisco Fernandez said some of the affected families have agreed to be transferred to a government relocation site in Barangay Budlaan.

Others have opted to get the P5,000 financial assistance and disturbance fee from the city government. (PNA)

Cebu Holdings profit up 106%

By Irene Sino Cruz
Inquirer
Last updated 04:21am (Mla time) 08/17/2006

CEBU CITY -- With increased sales amid increased consumer spending, property firm Cebu Holdings Inc., an affiliate of Ayala Land Inc., registered a 106-percent growth in net income in the first half of the year to P114 million from P55.3 million in the same period last year.

Consolidated gross income was P480 million, mostly from commercial center operations, said Francis Monera, executive vice president and chief operating officer.

The Ayala Center Cebu contributed P206 million in revenues, Monera said.

Other revenue sources included commercial lots sales in the Cebu Business Park, Asiatown I.T. Park, City Sport Club shares, Park Tower 2 penthouse units and Amara lots, he said.

"We did well in all product lines," Monera said.

He said that only 12 lots were left in Cebu Business Park, the flagship project of Cebu Holdings, which has more than 100 lots in a 50-hectare integrated development.

There are six ongoing constructions by locators at Cebu Business Park, including a twin-structure of Lexmark Research and Development Corp., a 20-story residential condominium building, a 14-story IT building, a building for an insurance company and another for a bank, Monera said.

Cebu Holdings has also started expanding Ayala Center Cebu to have 6,000 square meters of additional space for lease.

Monera said increased consumer spending resulted in expansion of malls and mushrooming of small retail developments in Cebu City.

He said Cebu Holdings planned to construct another condominium building for office or residential use.

In the name of tourism...
I hope they will fall inlove with Cebu's charm...

Cebu is second 'most polluted'

The Freeman 08/17/2006

If you think the air stinks, your sense of smell is just working.

This is because Cebu City is the second most polluted city in the entire Philippines. Incidentally, our country is also the second most polluted among eight members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-7 said it may soon be unsafe to breath the air in Cebu and the Philippines during the Kapihan sa PIA yesterday. At the same time, they pushed for an all out support from all stakeholders to the Green Philippine Highway program of the government.

Isagani Montejo, Forestry Development Division regional technical director, said that as of the most recent Air Quality Survey, the Philippines is only second to Indonesia in the region.

Montejo furnished The FREEMAN a copy of the data from the DENR Secretary, which quoted an article from Time Magazine's April 2006 issue.

According to the data, the world is at its "tipping point" wherein various activities of modern man have been accelerating the global warming to the extent of changing climate patterns and endangering all forms of life.

These have brought the planet near the point where it may no longer be possible to repair and regenerate.

The data also showed that though there are already some major Asian cities, which are focusing on addressing pollution to improve the quality of life, no Philippine city was cited for any such environmental initiative.

According to the data, 70 percent of the pollutants, particularly carbon dioxide are contributed by motor vehicles while the remaining 30 percent come from fuel burning fixed facilities and area experts.

Cebu Province, which has the most vehicles among the 79 provinces outside of Metro Manila, is unsurprisingly ranked as the 2nd with the most polluted air followed by cities of Davao and Cagayan de Oro. Metro Manila is the most polluted.

In terms of forestry, Cebu is way below the normal symbiotic ratio of land devoted for timber and trees to land devoted for other uses such as agricultural, urban and industrial.

Ted Barral, chief of Forest Resources Division, said that a balance environment should have 46 percent of the total land area devoted for timber and forestry while 56 percent will be for other uses.

This is the reason why DENR's tree planting initiative is focused in the areas where these pollutants are concentrated, the Philippine Highways and main thoroughfares.

DENR Regional Executive Director Celso Loriega, Jr. said, a single tree can sequester .56 metric tons of carbon dioxide in its lifetime or an equivalent of 10 cars for every tree.

Loriega said, the implementation of the Green Philippine Highway is closely coordinated with the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of National Defense and the Department of Education.

The whole project covers 2,580 kilometers of nautical highway and the minimum requirement is 516,000 seedlings and saplings. - Ferliza C. Contratista

re the ads, its a manifestation that y101 is effective in reaching out to their target market, so the many advertisers... this is quite an expensive station to advertise but if the entity is aware that their target market is the A to B group, they should plug it here... hehe

I did get it so! hehehe Anyway, I worked for mix during one of their open mic finals. Sadly, my dream of learning more from Sonny B. was hampered with an unreason. I didn't even touch the mic!!!

It really is effective. The way they work to aac really kept the quality of a radio station, but wouldn't it be nice if Ogg Vorbis would've been used to keep the file smaller and to let dial-up netters at pace?

MixFM yeah, really expensive. I was targetting adverts, but they're way too expensive to hook.

Does Bigfoot currently have a tie-up with the Film Academy located also in Cebu. If their forces will merge, we will find Beverly Hills in Lahug a posibility.

Yeah, actually bro, Bigfoot is the mother company. The film academy in Mactan is one of their ventures.

Two thumbs up to the Augustinians.. At least the "dagkutan" has some art in it, unlike other churches where it is hastily done. Some even have "Coke" or "Pepsi" advertisements in the candle stand.

It reminds me of the monument in Pari-an.

Cebu Holdings spends P32.1M for Ayala Center Cebu, residential project Amara

Ayala-led Cebu Holdings, Inc. spent P32.1 million in the second quarter to spiff up Ayala Center Cebu and develop a residential project, the property developer said.

The Ayala Land, Inc. affiliate aims to sustain development and market leadership in the residential market by developing new phases of Amara and in the retail front by expanding additional lease areas and improving operations.

Executive Vice-President Francis Monera said Ayala Land’s primary investment vehicle in Cebu is bullish it will exceed targets this year after it reported a significant increase in its income for the first six months, derived largely from the sales of commercial lots, recurring revenues from retail and office leasing operations, and sales of residential lots, condominium units and sports club shares.

In the first half, Cebu Holdings and subsidiaries posted a 106.51% increase in net income to P114.28 million from P55.34 million, while it saw a 52.59% rise in quarterly earnings to P55.34 million ending in June.

"Judging from this performance, there is very high optimism that we will even exceed our targets for the year," said Mr. Monera, who is also the company’s chief operating officer.

Revenues climbed 49.76% to P222.2 million during the quarter, while six-month revenues jumped 69.27% to P480.33 million as growth came from the sale of commercial lots, continuing improvement of Ayala Center-Cebu’s performance, rental from e-Office, sale of residential lots and condominium units and sports club shares.

"Ayala Center Cebu sets innovation to continuously offering fresh concepts, unique events and rewarding experience to the shoppers. The reenergized merchandise mix, the ongoing strategic mall rezoning program and the exciting marketing activities has maintained its sales growth by 9% versus the same period in 2005," the company said.

Cebu Holdings derives its revenues from commercial land sales, lease income from commercial center, sale of condominium units and sports club shares.

Other revenue contributors are office lots from Asiatown IT Park and rental from e-Office -- both projects of 76%-owned subsidiary Cebu Property Ventures & Development Corp.

Cebu Holdings also derives income from interest earnings from short-term investments.

The mall is now being spruced up, with new paint, lighting and indoor landscaping.

Ayala Center Cebu Cinemas registered an average daily occupancy rate of 19% due to blockbuster movies lined up for the second and third quarter this year.

Food choices’ sales fell 0.3% versus the same period last year due to the closure of Chedz Bakeshop.

The ongoing rezoning of Ayala Food & Entertainment Center into a family food to share zone has maintained sales growth by 24% versus last year.

For the second quarter, commercial center operations comprised 41% of the company’s total revenue as it contributed P197.3 million.

Ayala Center Cebu has begun the construction of an expansion building which will bring in an additional 6,000 square meters of leasable space. The company is also poised to redevelop the mall’s lagoon area, while adding even more retail spaces.

"We even expect more growth in the future especially on retail as Ayala Center Cebu is set to expand and is foreseen to derive more revenues. Consumer spending in the region has increased, as evidenced by the expansion of malls and the mushrooming of small retail developments in Cebu. At Ayala Center Cebu, sales have been growing steadily year on year, with double-digit growth rates. Occupancy rate at the mall is full with a long list of applicants," he added.

Commercial lots revenue reached P108.9 million from the sale of three commercial lots from Cebu Business Park and Asiatown IT Park.

AMARA LOT SALES

Revenue from the sale of Amara lots grossed P27.8 million. Revenue recognized during the period included the sale of the remaining lots in the first phase and the previous year’s sale computed based on percentage of completion. The second phase was launched last month.

"The 70% take-up of the 86 lots after only few weeks of selling is a continuation of the record set by the full take-up in a matter of few weeks of the first phase," the company said.

The 46-hectare subdivision in Barangay Catarman, Liloan, is being developed by Cebu Holdings in partnership with Coastal High-point Ventures, Inc.

Being one of the few lighthouse communities in the world, and the only one in the country, Amara has been dubbed as a real estate best-seller since it first entered the market last year.

The two remaining Park Tower 2 units were fully sold during the period registering a total revenue of P18.4 million. Sale of sports club shares amounted to P2.4 million. For the period ended June 2006, a total of 1,019 shares were committed to buyers.

Revenue from e-Office rental grew by 3.57% to P26.1 million.

Buildup at Cebu Holdings’ flagship project Cebu Business Park, has accelerated in recent months. There are six ongoing constructions by locators, including the twin-structure of Lexmark Research and Development Corp., a 20-storey residential condominium, a 14-storey IT building, one building for an insurance company and another for a bank.

More locators have also expressed plans to start construction at the business hub.

Asiatown IT Park, a development of Cebu Property Ventures, has seen bullish growth with the continuing IT boom. As the only major and the first Philippine Economic Zone Authority registered IT Park outside Luzon, the 24-hectare IT Park has caught the interest of the major players in the IT industry.

Mr. Monera said it is home to a good mix of major software development companies and companies engaged in IT and IT-enabled services. Asiatown IT Park now hosts a number of prestigious locators such as NEC Telecom Software Philippines, EPSON Precision (Phils.), Inc., NCR Cebu Development Center, Tsuneishi Technical Services (Phils.), Inc., Dash Engineering of Japan, Versagrafx Design Philippines, Inc. and Globe Telecom. Major business process outsourcing firms and call centers include eTelecare Global Solutions, PeopleSupport and SPI Technologies, Inc.

Cebu Property Ventures is budgeting close to a P245.5 million in projects and capital expenditures for the year.

These will be financed through existing funds and internally generated funds. As of end-June, a total of P4.2 million was spent for the development of e-Office and Asiatown IT Park.

"The infrastructure, communication, electricity and manpower quality at Asiatown are at par with the major IT parks not only in Asia but also worldwide. This has ignited the influx of more IT locators in Cebu and is one of the reasons why we are experiencing more aggressiveness in the take-up of commercial lots in Asiatown IT Park compared to the previous years," said Mr. Monera, who is the president of Cebu Property Ventures.

Also, Cebu Holdings said it will reinforce its organizational capability by living up to the triple ISO certification it recently received for quality, environment, and health and safety.

Cebu Holdings is the only local full-line real estate company certified with these three international standards.

Since being awarded the triple certificates in April, the company has seen changes in the efficiencies of the organization, as well as in its financial margins. Meeting the standards is seen to further strengthen Cebu Holdings’ relationship with customers, enhance teamwork and internal operations which will impact both its external and internal customers.

"ISO is a continuing journey to improve internal business processes, the way we do quality business and how we deal with our customers. It is a set of disciplined processes to ensure that quality is always in everyone’s job and customer is always first," Mr. Monera said.

Jollibee sees more room for expansion in Cebu
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 08/18/2006

Leading fast food chain Jollibee Food Corporation still sees huge opportunity for expansion in Metro Cebu area as it is set to open two or three more Jollibee outlets in the next few months.

After making presence in the key business districts around the Metro Cebu, Jollibee is now moving to hit the highly-populated communities around the metropolis, such as its recent opening of its 27th branch in Cebu located in the Labangon area, which is the second largest barangay in Cebu.

The Labangon branch, which is operated by the company, is a two-story store that accommodates about 186 customers, it services the usual fast food offerings, such as dine-in, kiddy party, take-out orders, and delivery.

Jollibee marketing services manager for Regional Business Unit in Visayas Mindanao, Viema D. Camoñas said based on a study, the Labangon area, although it's more of residential is a good location for a Jollibee store.

She said unlike in the past, the market now has adapted to the fast paced urban life, and that eating out especially in fast foods has become part of the routine. "There is [still] a lot of room for expansion in Cebu, we are on the constant lookout for the right areas and location," said Manuel V. Yap II Jollibee Foods Inc. operations manager for Visayas and Mindanao regional business unit.

Yap said the next opening will be located in the southern part of Cebu, hitting the Banilad area, the formal opening maybe held this month or earlier next month.

Aside from Banilad, Yap said the company is also considering opening a Jollibee outlet in Talamban, and other highly populated areas around Metro Cebu.

"Actually all areas are being considered, but we are prioritizing those that have good locations," he said in an interview during the formal opening of the Labangon-outlet.

Moreover, aside from bringing Jollibee closer to the consumer base, or in the big residential areas, Yap said the company is also looking at targeting the growing call center workers.

"We are also looking at serving the call center industry's working pool, by offering Jollibee products to these kind of market that are up at night," Camoñas said.

However, there is no concrete plan being pursued by the Jollibee-VisMin team of pushing the establishment or more 24-hour Jollibee stores that are near the call center companies.

To date, there are 117 Jollibee stores around Visayas and Mindanao, the company is opening at least one store in a week. Of the total number of Jollibee outlets in Southern Philippines, 62 percent of which is managed by franchisees.

Jollibee is one of the Philippines' phenomenal business success stories. Starting in 1975 as a two-branch ice cream parlor, it later expanded its menu to include hot sandwiches and other meals.

With encouraging success, Jollibee Foods Corporation was incorporated in 1978 with seven outlets to fully explore the possibilities of a hamburger concept. The company was able to hit its P500 million sales mark in 1984, catapulting the company into the list of Top 500 Philippine Corporations.

CPVDC speeds up IT park projects on growth of BPOs

SUnStar Cebu

The continued growth of the business process out-sourcing and call center industry has prompted Cebu Holdings Inc.-subsidiary Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. (CPVDC) to fast-track new developments at the Asiatown IT (information technology) Park in Cebu City.

Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) chief operating officer Francis Monera said about 18 hectares of the 24-hectare Asiatown IT Park is ready for building construction.

Seven parcels of land, with sizes ranging from 800 square meters to 1,000 square meters, are already reserved by interested locators, he said.

Asiatown IT Park’s commercial component, formerly “The Village,” is also scheduled to open next month.

The area, which is still unnamed, will house establishments that would operate during the work hours of Asiatown employees, CHI president Rene Almendras earlier said.

Establishments expected to open in the area include, coffee shops, restaurants, resto-bars and retail stores “that are willing to operate at night or early morning when Asiatown is alive.”

Testament

The growth of Asiatown mirrors the blooming business process outsourcing (BPO) and call center industry.

“The growth (increase in revenue) of Asiatown for the first quarter of the year is 10 times that of the previous year. This is a testament of how IT is moving in Cebu,” Monera said in an interview.

The growth of the industry also has the Arroyo administration pursuing the country’s bid to become a dominant player in the global BPO and call center industry through activities, such as a national summit on competitiveness on Sept. 28 and 29.

The summit would seek to advance the national development of the BPO sector that has grown from four call centers with a few hundred employees in 2000 to an industry that now employees over 200,000 Filipinos all over the country, according to a statement.

But wait a sec, I think its time for us to ask for a budget from the Department of Tourism. Our promotion might be working better than theirs.
Thanks Mark. I would love to join when SSC forumers get-together in December. Would you be the contact person? Please give me a number to call. Then I will talk

The USS Cebu (ARG-6) was a Luzon-class internal combustion engine repair ship in the service of the United States Navy in World War II. Named after Cebu, an island in the Philippines, it was the second ship of the Navy to bear this name.

Cebu was laid down 21 September 1943 as liberty ship SS Francis P. Duffey (MCE hull 1805) by Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard, Inc., Baltimore, Maryland, under a Maritime Commission contract; launched 18 October 1943; sponsored by Mrs. M. C. Bird; acquired by the Navy 27 October 1943; and commissioned 15 April 1944, Captain G. W. Scott in command.

Cebu’s special mission was providing shops and trained men for the repair of internal combustion engines, but through the course of the war, her men performed an impressive variety of tasks, ranging from the repairing of ship's clocks to major work on battleships. She arrived at Manus in the Admiralty Islands 10 September 1944. At this great fleet base, she prepared small craft and larger ships for their role in the Philippine operations, working many times around the clock in order to insure the readiness of ships vital to the success of the invasion assaults.

At Manus on 10 November 1944, Cebu was anchored only 800 yards from Mount Hood (AE-11) when the ammunition ship exploded, showering Cebu’s decks with bomb fragments and heavy projectiles. Five of her men were killed and six wounded, but quick work prevented serious damage to the ship itself. She was able to continue her essential work without interruption, preparing ships for the Lingayen and Iwo Jima assaults.

Cebu was stationed at Ulithi from 22 January 1945 to 12 February when she sailed for San Pedro Bay. Her work continued at a furious rate as victims of suicide attacks required immediate repairs. Her services to small craft at Cebu continued until 21 September, when she sailed for occupation duties at Okinawa and Japan until 11 March 1946.

Cebu prepared at Pearl Harbor from 29 March 1946 to 11 May for her role supporting the atomic tests of Operation Crossroads at Bikini and Kwajalein in the summer of 1946. She arrived at San Diego 28 September, and was placed out of commission in reserve at Stockton, California, 30 June 1947. Cebu was scrapped in 1973.

Cebu received one battle star for World War II service.

I have noticed that scaffoldings in the philippines are still made up of bamboo stilts.... this surely is not acceptable in other countries???

Steel tubings and braces are the proper way to go, not bamboo and rope which looks dodgy :D esp that Cebu is fast developing and more and more big buidlings would need you to have proper scaffolding

I saw last night the interview of MS. KACY (CEO of Bigfoot / International Academy of Film & Television) in ANC's BUSINESS NIGHTLY with David Celdran. I found out in the interview that Cebu is the Headquarter of Bigfoot while their presence in Hongkong and Singapore are just their extension offices. The total investment they've poured in Cebu as of now has reached to US$10 Million or more than half billion pesos. Their Mactan campus (IAFTV) is now fully operational. Also, the licence they acquired for FASHION TV (FTV) is for Philippines and Singapore only in which they are producing some segments to be fed at FTV Channel worldwide. The first branch in the Philippines for Fashion Cafe is now open ans she said it's located in the lobby but she did not specify which one. (Mactan or F. Ramos?). Also, I've learned that Bigfoot has a 50% stake at HONGKONG FILM ACADEMY. She said as of now, they don't have plans yet for Cebu expansion but they are building a campus (smaller version of Mactan campus) in Singapore and a small school for scriptwriting and screenplay in South Africa.

Hey Mark, this is a great aerial view of the Waterfront Hotel. Architecturally, it is one of the most impressive in Cebu City. Which area was it that a government-owned land will be vacated and sold to the hotel for further expansion? I was wondering if that area, when cleared, will be wide enough to expose the front facade of the hotel to the major highway shown in the foreground of this picture. Isn't this road the main way to Banilad?

‘Not all subway works are suspended’

By Doris C. Bongcac
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:43am (Mla time) 08/15/2006

The diggings for the construction of a subway that would connect the South Coastal Road (SCR) to the Sergio Osmeña Road will be the one deferred until January, not all the works involving the billion-peso project.

Nigel Paul Villarete, Cebu City Planning and Development Officer, said non-visible works as well as the construction of an engineers’ quarters could still be done even during the holding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in December.

This early, experimental diggings are in progress within the vicinity of Plaza Independencia to search for cultural artifacts, Villarete said.

Villarete said the Japanese firm Kagima, the builder of the Talisay portion of the SCR, was also commissioned to construct the subway.

Works are scheduled to begin in September and will be completed in 24 months.

The national government availed of a P1-billion supplemental loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to fund the subway and two overpasses in Talisay City.

“With the subway in two years we will be experiencing a smooth flow of traffic between the north and southern part of the city,” Villarete said.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said in an earlier interview that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has deferred the project to prevent inconveniences during the ASEAN Summit.

The demolition of shanties along S. Osmeña Road will push through this month as an allocation of P5 million has been readied for use as financial assistance to families that would be evicted because of the project implementation, said Cebu City Administrator Francisco Fernandez.

The clearing will affect at least 80 families.

At least 50 of the displaced families have refused to be relocated to Barangay Budlaan and instead opted for a P5,000 financial assistance from the city government.

Sunstar Cebu
Potentonic
By Jigs Arquiza

Nestled cozily in an intimate corner of One Acacia Place, Tonic presents a more truly upscale alternative for Metro Cebu’s discerning night owls.

With most bars’ intentions to provide a sophisticated, cosmopolitan setting for its customers, Tonic succeeds where others have failed. This isn’t just another ordinary nightspot. Much thought has been given towards its conception: inspired by the bars and lounges in metropolitan cities like New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Hongkong, Tonic offers touches rarely seen outside these cities.

Pass though its glass doors and your eyes are greeted by a waterfall cascading down the far side of the main dining area, adding a touch of Zen to the surroundings. The stark yet elegant simplicity of Tonic’s interiors gives the customers a refreshing break from the typical ostentatious and badly chosen décor found in other bars and lounges.

Furniture is spaced evenly, giving customers more than enough legroom to give credence to the claim that Tonic is not just a bar, it’s a lounge, where people can relax and unwind in comfort. To add emphasis to this assertion are the stuffed chairs and sofas placed strategically around the establishment. In keeping with the minimalist theme, walls are left bare save for a couple of abstracts hanging near the bar.

While the overall theme is white, the bar provides the establishment with additional splashes of color. Backlit by low-wattage bulbs in pastel shades, it furnishes the customer with a soothing environment that’s easy on the eyes, a boon especially for those weary of looking at computer monitors all day long. The bar itself is lined by lavender neon lighting, enveloping it in a purple haze.

Epicures will without doubt have a great time feasting on Tonic’s excellently prepared and great-tasting cuisine. Obviously well thought-out, the menu offers a diverse, multi-cultural selection of soups, appetizers and entrees such as Pumpkin soup, Calamari, Sexy Scallops, Burritos, Yin Yang Ribs, Campesinos and the perennial favorite, Tonic’s Beef Tadjang. The typical assortment of beers, wines and cocktails are available, although the in-house cocktails Hot Sex, Blind Melon and 007 come most recommended.

Music at Tonic is easy on the ears: no bass-heavy hip-hop beats, no grating techno samples, just vocal house and a bit of rave, a bit of dance and a little trance, perfect for chilling out and spreading the love. Ibiza habitués would definitely approve.

In the midst of the numerous bars in Metro Cebu, each maintaining their so-called popularity with the “in” crowd, Tonic comes as a breath of fresh air. No claims, no pretenses, just good vibes, good food and good music.

Surely, a tonic for one’s soul.

Few SRP heads-up from a realtor:

1. Cordova-SRP bridge
2. at least 3-5 first class hotels
3. Robinson's mall and a mall by Filinvest

oi Butch wa'y sapayan.. Anyway, the property was perfect -- the location was very strategic as it offered a breathtaking view of the city! The price/sqm. which was mentioned by the agent was, I think, a very good deal.
