h3nry August 30th, 2006, 03:12 AM good looking and unassuming edifices! but why are the locals back there so hyped? theyre just proposals, with NO FUNDING in sight. and most probably wil never be realized, the need to cross your fingers tighter is imminent. these flashy building looks like something straight out of simcity. i just hope theyre not photoshopped by some of the talented cebuano "image editors" (consider this a joke if you are offended. lol!)
now lets talk about the aim rankings, i know that the aim ranking will not be a big deal for locals back there. (but i wonder if you will all be hyped if cebu was placed on top). if you see their rankings, most metro manila cities comprising the NCR are on the top tiers. but look at metro manila? its still a big mess! same goes with the cities in metro cebu, cebu city mandaue city and lapulapu cities are on the higher ups. what benefit does cebu get from this rankings? its just a "lemon-prestige" and its mostly based on perceptions, not on actual performance. and dont you think it was too early to release their survey for 2006? if my memory serves me right, the survey for 2005 was released between november 2005 and february 2006, and this early we have the survey for 2006? and cebu city overshoot from 12th place last year to 6th this year? could this be the result of the aim's self destructing survey made last year? well, theyre pretty much doing the same whammy this time.
but oh well, somebody with a new status here pmed me, and told me to avoid making inciteful comments and to tone down my supposed "attacks" i understand his concern and the nirvana that he is in right now... basically just the euphoria of a new status. have nothing against the person though. he could be of good use in the forum considering he's out of school right now and doesnt enjoy strenous physical activity. the best bet for his new status, congrats.
just to clarify things, i think my posts are far from being inciteful.... insightful perhaps?
Valium, What seems to be the problem??
anybody can be proud of what they have.., and anybody also can be envy of what others have. Cystal clear.

@valium: hehe, pre, quite frankly even im sceptical about the Bigfoot proposals, its true that we need to be cautious about this one and not get too overexcited, bigfoot still has a loooong way to go, pero youll never know...if everything goes smoothly for bigfoot...... About your allegations that those renderings were photoshopped by hansboy, hehe, come on have faith in our forumers, not everyone here is a no good sleazebag, youre too pessimistic, are you by any chance a cynic? a follower of diogenes perhaps? Whatever beliefs you hold, i have to admit that i do respect your opinions, pero try and lighten up once in a while, otherwise youll get wrinkles by the time your 30 :)
hans boy August 30th, 2006, 04:13 AM About The Bigfoot Media Park The 3 Towers @ Cebu Business Park.
Bigfoot is not the one who designs it nor the one who uses CAD softwares in designing it.
Bigfoot is just a company who ask TPJ & Associates or Archtiect Tessie P. Javier & Associates (who design The Imperial Palace that is currently under construction in Mactan, Cebu)to design 3 buildings(1 condo bldg., 1 hotel bldg. & 1 office bldg.) for their property at Cebu Business Park.
So, if you have questions on what CAD software they used in designing it or whatever questions you have in mind. You can call their firm guys. And if you're going to look closely to the perspectives, TPJ logo is on the side under Bigfoot's logo. That means it's copyrighted.
All I know is it is ON HOLD because of funding problems and other priorities of Bigfoot.
hans boy August 30th, 2006, 04:18 AM Those new Bigfoot buildings posted by Hansboy are really nice, I hope those will be built soon. I wonder if they have plans for tall buildings like this in SRP that are still on hold. Do you have any information on SRP Hansboy??? I wonder if SRP have good subgrade properties capable of supporting skyscrapers.
I don't have any idea about Bigfoot's plan on SRP aside from the news that I have read on local dailies.
But if ever I will get some inside news at Bigfoot about their plans on SRP. I'll keep you posted guys.
Sinjin P. August 30th, 2006, 04:29 AM ^^hello :)
for your info, several chat posts here in Cebu thread were already erased by sinjin and sinjin told me that it's the right thing to do coz if chatting will be allowed, ssc will slow down...
Do you know Grey X? he's the one who strictly implemented the rule...
Greetings will be allowed as long as it will be backed up with significant posts...
Yup, the PMs I sent to them were so friendly and I did not expect such reaction. I did not say at all that greetings were not allowed. I just said that they have to be backed up/included in significant posts. I even restored the posts I've deleted to compensate with them. And, saying "lol" doesn't mean anything at all, it is just an expression of mine.
Anyway, forgive me for all my mistakes for I am still adjusting to the position. The issue has been resolved and I do not want any more discussions regarding the matter.

On-topic, how is the CICC construction going guys? Gahapon, pwerting kusuga sa uwan, wala'y undang!

THANK YOU kaayo bai.
How I wish gyud nga ako ang nag design adto na mga buildings kay gamitan gyud nako ug photoshop ug illustrator ug 3D Studio Max pa gani. But for sure TPJ & Associates who design the edifice have this kinds of software also that they might use in designing the edifice. Why not? Photoshop and Illustrator and 3D Studio Max can well be use to those edifice. And we can't blame them because as you know if we are in their postion we want to show our best to our client especially if its Bigfoot and big projects like those. It's already an honor that Bigfoot ask you to give them a design of 3 towers for their property in CBP.
I don't really understand some people here even if the logo of TPJ & Associates(who is well known and who designs The Imperial Palace) is on the side of the perspectives.
Once again bai, thank you for speaking on behalf of me.
Sinjin P. August 30th, 2006, 04:45 AM Anyway, I admit that I'm too excited about the developments going in and around Cebu, lol, but I am hopeful that all of these would realize without doubt ;)
HER August 30th, 2006, 05:02 AM what about bigfoot building, when will be the construction? Mao ni pinakanindot seguro nga building kun mahuman.
Sinjin P. August 30th, 2006, 05:05 AM ^ It's still on-hold. As what hans boy said, Bigfoot is still trying to raise funds enough for the construction of the 3 towers
HER August 30th, 2006, 05:11 AM thanks sinjin. nindota kun madayon.
Wishbone7054 August 30th, 2006, 05:18 AM Wow, the proposed Bigfoot complex sure looks spectacular. But in response to Valium's cynicism, even if it's just a proposal, it speaks volumes of the fact that somebody is willing to gamble - really big - in our city. This is the same man who also made the bold and improbable PROPOSAL to move his corporate HQ from NYC to Cebu ... and succeeded! They don't make proposals like this in Timbuktu. Maybe 5 years ago, this type of development would have been improbable in the city. But now, even just the prospect of this edifices one day proudly standing in the CBP shows the country that we, as a metropolis, are ready for bigger and better things.
Peace.
Sinjin P. August 30th, 2006, 05:32 AM Cebu signs up for ‘dream cities’
By Isolde D. Amante
Of Sun.Star Cebu
At least six local governments in the Visayas, including Cebu City, are working on long-range development plans, in an attempt to ensure that projects continue regardless of who’s in charge at City Hall.
They will also use scorecards to measure progress made against targets in 12 areas, from competitive infrastructure and lean government, to responsible citizenship, growth in the per capita gross domestic product and greater productivity.
Under its Dream Cities program, the Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA) hopes to encourage strategic planning in cities and compel them to involve the community in government’s affairs. The ISA will launch the program today.
The Visayan cities of Cebu, Dumaguete, Bais, Iloilo, Tagbilaran and Calbayog are in various stages of complying with the ISA’s Public Governance System (PGS), a measurement tool similar to the “balanced scorecards” now in vogue in the private sector.
Each participating city will need to raise P200,000 a year, with ISA’s help, to pay for training, planning and monitoring activities.
Asked how local officials can be compelled to make long-term plans, when each term lasts only three years, Mayor Oscar Rodriguez of San Fernando, Pampanga, said: “Precisely, we are trying to institutionalize the PGS, where each citizen is a stakeholder... It is time to deviate from the ordinary and pursue a different, but correct course toward governance.”
The “Dream Cities” program sets measurable targets, such as making the scorecards available to at least one million Filipinos and using these in 90 percent of all cities and towns.
Once a city is selected, ISA conducts a series of training sessions that bring together government and private sector participants.
“This multi-sectoral governance coalition will help the city plan, make programs and monitor, and this will lead to transparency, good governance and, to a certain degree, eliminate graft,” Rodriguez added.
It was not clear how such a coalition will avoid duplicating functions of the local development councils, special bodies required under the Local Government Code so that accredited non-government representatives can have a say in how local governments set priorities and spend taxpayers’ funds.
“We will use a methodology that will ensure participation of the various stakeholders,” said Dr. Nick Fontanilla, president of the Asia-Pacific Center for Research.
Dr. Fontanilla announced that ISA has also crafted a road map, which spells out “what we’d like the Philippines to be in 2030, how we can get there and a guide to tell us if we are successful in this journey.”
ISA hosted yesterday afternoon an online press conference that gathered journalists from Ilocos to Davao City in a chatroom provided by www.yehey.com.
The League of Cities is signing a memorandum to commit a counterpart fund of P75,000, which the ISA will match. Each participating city will be required to earmark P200,000 in its annual budget for each year the city remains in the Dream Cities program.
According to its website (www.isacenter.org), ISA’s core programs are funded by the Center for International Private Enterprise in Washington, DC.
Led by former finance secretary Jesus Estanislao, the ISA also lists at least 37 organizations as sectoral partners, including the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, Foundation for Worldwide People Power, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas and the Rotary Club of Cebu.
Sinjin P. August 30th, 2006, 05:37 AM Cebu assured of enough power with Power Barge 101 switch-on
The Freeman 08/30/2006
Cebu is now assured of enough power for the ASEAN Summit in December, after Power Barge 101 was formally switched on yesterday.
National Power Corporation president Cyril del Callar said the facility will not only provide back-up power but also has the capacity to immediately restore power in case of outages in Cebu and the entire Cebu-Negros-Panay grid.
He stressed that the deployment of PB 101 back in Cebu "will highlight one important milestone," the 12th ASEAN Summit which will be held here on December 11 to December 14.
PB 101, which underwent repair and reconditioning, is now docked at Muelle Osmeña in Lapu-Lapu City, can provide additional capacity of 32 megawatts to Cebu's existing power supply.
At present, Cebu has a dependable capacity of almost 670 MW, with a peak demand of 454 MW.
Commissioned in 1981, PB 101 is made up of four units with a capacity of eight MW each. Aside from acting as back-up power, Del Callar said the barge will also function as a peaking plant during peak periods, together with the Cebu Diesel Power Plant I in Naga.
Likewise, it can also serve as black start for immediate power restoration to the Cebu grid in case of major power outages similar to what happened last May 10, when a major blackout affected almost entire Visayas region.
Governor Gwendolyn Garcia expressed great relief over the switch on of PB 101 since it meant that Cebu will have enough power supply for the ASEAN Summit.
"It is the chance of a lifetime for Cebu to shine and the National Power Corporation provided us the power to do it," Garcia said.
With Cebu's unprecedented growth, the governor said that the province needs long-term solutions to its power problems and one of these solutions is the provision of additional capacity.
Adam Pogoy, PB 101 manager said that last June 14, while on dry dock in the Batangas shipyard on the eve of their departure to Iloilo, he was informed that the barge would be deployed to Lapu-Lapu City to serve as back-up power for Cebu province.
Iloilo, which is facing threat of power crisis, had requested for the transfer of the barge there but the national government decided to put the barge in Mactan Island to ensure that Cebu will have enough power for the ASEAN Summit.
PB 101 was first transferred to Cebu in December 2005 from Bohol. It was dry docked at the Keppel Shipyard in June 2006 for repair and arrived at Mactan last August 22. - Wenna A. Berondo and Cristina C. Birondo/QSB

^^ Well, this is a bit dissapointing on our part. :sly:
We were expecting it to be at Iloilo City by this August but.....it's just to frustrating.
That's why sometimes we feel so neglected.
Look on the brighter side though, at least is for the better, para dili sya makahulaw sa aton nga bisita gikan sa nagalain-lain nga nasud. Having a blackout in a summit does seem to be embarassing though and with security on high alert, its better to have a strong infrastructures. At least this is something that we did for a noble cause.
By the way, there are some people that are missing in the SSC Cebu forum these days....:D

Here's PowerBarge 101 of NAPOCOR/NPC. It uses diesel or bunker fuel oil (similar to that of the bunker fuel that was spilt in Guimaras)to run the power barge.
The barge will be switched on today, August 29 as part of the measures to ensure stable power in the upcoming ASEAN Summit in December
LordCarnal August 30th, 2006, 09:12 AM Do power barges like this generate power? If so, then how?

valium August 30th, 2006, 07:56 PM ^^ i dont think them cebuano boys would want to show us a pic, im afraid its still on its skeletal structure. and im not very optimistic, basing on the latest pics shown in the forum. its not anywhere near its final stage of construction. there should be a plan B for cebu! or we could loose face among our ASEAN neighbors. vietnam and cambodia would have a big laugh at us.... thanks to the locals of cebu.
if there is a tiny piece of miracle left, even if it sounds impossible and so out of this world, we hope the hyped convention center will be finished...
but im still doubtful... focus on plan B should be prepared.

i think you are quite ignorant about the power grid within the panay negros and cebu, the power barge that will be docked in cebu will still supply the whole grid and not just cebu FYI. dont try to sound too heroic.... it gets cheesy and overacting sometimes. familiarize and educate yourself about the topic before making heroic comments. peace out brotha!

but i think even with out this center, cebu can make it... but they nid to think about this possibilty
flesh_is_weak August 30th, 2006, 09:05 PM im still optimistic about it though...white gold supermarket in the north reclamation practically just grew overnight like a mushroom way back on the late 90's--after the old one burned...i think the construction took just a few months (around 3?)...so why cant the same thing go for the convention center? i know that the building's (white gold) not much to look at, but being completed so fas is quiet an achievement though...
as for plan B, well, we've got grand con, shang-rila, waterfront...just take your pick...

boju August 31st, 2006, 01:54 AM Bigfoot grants online English course accounts
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 08/31/2006
Alarmed by the widespread impression that English proficiency is deteriorating in the Philippines, Bigfoot Global Solution's affiliate Cleverlearn Ltd., has moved towards saving the country's strongest competitive advantage.
This global company, which is based in Cebu, has spent about P20 million to give out 20,000 English Online Course accounts to over 100,000 high school students, and thousands of elementary pupils in Cebu province.
Bigfoot chairman Joe Mercado said yesterday that Bigfoot has seen the declining supply of good English speaking manpower pool, specifically in Cebu, as his company is also running a call center operation here.
"You only have to look around to see that the Philippines has become a favored destination of many multi-million-dollar business process outsourcing companies. And yet, socio-economic experts have been warning that the English proficiency of Filipino graduates, and consequently our workforce, has been deteriorating for years," Mercado said.
Through the company's charity arm Bigfoot Asia Pacific Foundation Inc., the about P20 million worth of CleverCourse accounts will be given to the Department of Education (DepEd) in for the entire Cebu province, in order to sustain the foundation for English proficiency and IT skills to the next generation workforce.
Cleverlearn, a technology company, has invested dollars to develop its own English learning system. It tapped language experts to design and develop CleverCourse, which is currently being used by hundreds of subscribers in Asia, Europe and other parts of the globe. Each CleverCourse account in Germany for instance, is sold for 20 Euros or P1,200 a month.
According to Mercado the entire 20,000 course will be availed by students in batches, as this online course is designed for individual online teaching.
Developed by language experts, CleverCourse features the largest library English lessons online. It offers General English course, as well as industry-specific Business English Courses, like marketing, manufacturing, business travel, finance, customer service, information technology, human resources, and even business presentations.
"We have been teaching English as second language to different countries like Germany , Korea , China, Hong Kong," Mercado said adding that the company has now decided to give it off to its home-ground in Cebu.
Although, there is a possibility that the course will be offered by the company in a nationwide scope, but Mercado stressed that the company has to prioritize Cebu, as there are also a lot of entities, which are wanting to help in Luzon and other provinces, especially in Manila.
"We hope this will help our students to attain their goal of achieving higher qualifications especially in an English-driven market," Mercado said.
Since this course is technology base, a school will have to have an Internet connection. In this concern, Department of Education (DepEd) executives in Cebu province will have to coordinate with another private sector initiated program called Gearing Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students, or GILAS.

EXACTLY!!! what he is doing is beyond constructive criticism anymore. he has a good command of english, but he is not using this skill in better ways. what will make out of your good english if you don't know how to use it to convey a good message?
i would say, he is plagued with personality problem and he badly needs professional "psychological" help.
some of you guys admired him, but i don't. his thoughts are filthy and a very apparent evil intention to simply spoil the sheer fun and enjoyment of this thread and the other threads.

but im still doubtful... focus on plan B should be prepared.
CICC is doing great...
I think few technical persons here know what's the real update of the structure.
They can even go fast and faster with the structure.. since it only involves assembly.. For as long as there will be no problem with the budgets. (The've quoted that past few months ago.)
I'm sure they can comply with that..
habagatcentral1 August 31st, 2006, 03:51 AM i think you are quite ignorant about the power grid within the panay negros and cebu, the power barge that will be docked in cebu will still supply the whole grid and not just cebu FYI. dont try to sound too heroic.... it gets cheesy and overacting sometimes. familiarize and educate yourself about the topic before making heroic comments. peace out brotha!
^^ Val, go to Iloilo thread and see what is the reply regarding this topic and everything has been explained. Peace! :okay:

I don't see anything good in terms of English if there are conflicting statements.
How would the forumers hide any photo of the CICC when in fact, one of the reasons why somebody is calling it a hype is because dozens of photos of it are being posted here in SSC.
And even I don't see any hype after all if only around 2 to 3 SSC forumers keep on posting photos of it. There would be a hype if such a construction is being discussed everyday on any of the tri-media be it in Cebu or outside Cebu. There would be a hype if millions of people throughout the country would be discussing about it every hour of every day.

Speaking of gimingaw, could someone teach me when to use the right word like:
Ug/Og - confused ako kay this refers to "and" and sometimes "of"
Mingaw - sometimes used as "missed" and sometimes used as "silent" or "bored".

daghan ug meaning... ang mingaw...
1. gimingaw ko nimo: i miss you
2. mingaw man karon: boring day
ambot oi... bsta mao na cya...
LordCarnal August 31st, 2006, 04:38 AM ^^
Nothing to confuse between the two.
Mingaw is "silent" or "bored".
Gimingaw is "missed"... but sometimes Cebuano speakers have the tendency to make shortcuts in some words thus "gimingaw" is sometimes reduced to "mingaw."
(Example: "Mingaw na ko niya" instead of "Gimingaw na ko niya")

habagatcentral1 August 31st, 2006, 04:46 AM ^^ Thanks! Its a learning process though but I'm very interested in learning Cebuano. Its a good thing that I know Hiligaynon already for the two languages are a bit similar.
I've got confused because Bisaya in Mindanao is different with Cebuano. Naa variations like in Gensan, Bisaya but naa words na Ilonggo/Hiligaynon. Sa Davao, Bisaya na Tagalog. Bisan sa hometown sa akong mama sa Pagadian wala'y kasabot sa "padung"(understood as padulong) ug "duwa" (understood as dula). :D

tj_brewed August 31st, 2006, 05:07 AM Update!
Let's say goodbye to one of Cebu's famous party enclaves and lifestyle complex "THE VILLAGE." As of 10:35 am, half of "The Village" has already been torn down.
Based on an article released on August 18, 2006 by Sunstar Online
Asiatown IT Park’s commercial component, formerly “The Village,” is also scheduled to open next month.
The area, which is still unnamed, will house establishments that would operate during the work hours of Asiatown employees, CHI president Rene Almendras earlier said.
Establishments expected to open in the area include, coffee shops, restaurants, resto-bars and retail stores “that are willing to operate at night or early morning when Asiatown is alive.”

For the moment, I thought they are renovations on going because when I passed by there yesterday, there were people I thought was for renovation.
Sinjin P. August 31st, 2006, 05:11 AM ^ And Mango Square too which Tomas Osmeña wants to be DEMOLISHED!
tj_brewed August 31st, 2006, 05:15 AM ^ And Mango Square too which Tomas Osmeña wants to be DEMOLISHED!
Hmm...oo nga, but the difference is that I guess Mango will be demolished for good? Uhmm will they be building a new structure there? The Village will be replaced with a new one kc... Sayang sana ang Mango..I often hang out in there...ehehehehhe
Sinjin P. August 31st, 2006, 05:19 AM ^ Mango Square deserves to be demolished, makuyawan ko maglakaw-lakaw diha nga ako ra usa (daghan kaayo'g siga-mata, seriously).
Btw, what's going on with the building adjacent to Mango Square (the closed Rustan's)? Because, if I were SM, they would buy that building and the lot occupied by Mango Square and build their hypermarket there
LordCarnal August 31st, 2006, 05:31 AM ^^
About the hypermarket, I remember an article stating that SM needed at least 3 hectares of land for their hypermarket. It must be really big. What's a hypermarket by the way? Is it a mall?
Umm, I hope they won't demolish all the outdoor stalls in Mango Square. That's where I hang out too -- katung Burger stall! It's actually giving life to that area there given the fact that it's also a hotspot (for wifi, not for prostis hehehehe) . I think they should just regulate or even ban those stalls where liquors are being served.
@Tj
Are they going to build an establishment similar to Crossroads or BTC? Like an outdoor strip mall perhaps that would cater to the workers nearby?
Sinjin P. August 31st, 2006, 05:36 AM ^ SM Hypermarket which has a balanced mix of food and non-food items at highly affordable prices.
I've been to an SM Hypermarket in Manila. It's basically a supermarket with some (not all) items from the department store too (clothes, kitchen stuff, etc.).
Anyway, diba Gaisano Country Mall's anchor is GAISANO HYPERMARKET?
tj_brewed August 31st, 2006, 05:37 AM ^^

They haven't posted any renderings yet. However, one thing for sure though..it would surely cater to these nightowls in Asiatown (that includes me eheheheh) and the party animals too (uhmmm that would be us sscers ehehehe)...

Ahh okay.. But the SM supermarket in SM City Cebu itself also sells some items like clothes, etc.. Is it a hypermarket too?
Since the SM Hypermarket would be a stand alone establishment, it would be similar to Makro right?
The old SM in Iloilo also incorporates a supermarket plus a little department store outside. Been there once though.
Sinjin P. August 31st, 2006, 05:48 AM ^ No, it's just a supermarket. A hypermarket really has lots of goods from the department store but not all the goods from the department store. ;)

Shopwise is a very good example of a hypermart. Just like Walmart and Target in the US. Sometimes this kind of store is also called a Supercenter.
Sinjin P. August 31st, 2006, 05:57 AM ^ Shopwise is the best hypermarket I've been to. Especially their branch in Festival Supermall Alabang.
Hopefully, if Festival Supermall Cebu gets built, Shopwise could anchor it

aboout the buildings, hyped coz if those buidings will be materialized, Cebu for the 1st time will have those buildings that tall coz as of now, Cebu has no tall buildings 30 storeys up... so we are praying for those taller buildings to be built here in Cebu sooner...
I don't agree with a high building.
I'm more for the lower type buildings. Singapore even banned buildings to be no more than 280 meters high. I sternly believe that if Cebu will be a skyscraper city in its own right, it will really have massive projects.
I think Valium took a lot of valium while posting. hehehe And I think his nitpicking of the english language can sometimes be quite annoying.
Criticism wise, I don't think he's got the potentials. There are better critics here. Cloaking behind his mom's skirts hehe, I can see your sig and your cloaking really has something in common.

Guimaras gets P6.5M aid from Visayas govs
By Danny B. Dangcalan
GOVERNORS in the Visayas have extended P6.5 million Wednesday to Governor JC Rahman Nava as support to their calamity-stricken brothers in Guimaras province.
Governor Gwendolyn Garcia of Cebu, in Central Visayas, has extended P5 million, while the League of Provinces in the Philippines has given P500,000.
Western Visayas governors in Antique, Capiz, Aklan, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental have given P200,000 each.
The cash assistance were given Wednesday during a special meeting of the Visayas governors at the Negros Occidental Governor's Conference Hall.
Meanwhile, the governors have passed a resolution ordering the strict implementation in the issuance of permits for oil tankers to prevent another occurrence.
The same resolution also persecutes those responsible for issuing travel permits to Petron Corporation, which chartered the sunken m/t solar 1 and to Sunshine Maritime Development Corporation, owner of the tanker.
Governor Nava has expressed his gratitude to the governors in behalf of the Guimarasnons. He has confirmed that he has received the cash assistance previously given by various local government units.
Nava disclosed he has ordered for the evacuation of residents in severely affected barangays.
He said, they have two options: to advise residents to stay in their relatives living in safer areas, or stay in evacuation sites in barangay facilities.
This as everything, he said, "is going down," as most fisherfolks complained of not having an income since August 11.
Meanwhile, two motor tugboats Regullus and Vega have sprayed chemical dispersants at the spill site in Unisan islet in Guimaras. Motor tugboat Polar Star Star of FRMSI coastal vessel has hauled marine pollution equipment and dispersant from Iloilo to Nueva Valencia, Guimaras.
The PCG SAR vessel 003 likewise sprayed chemical dispersants at the spill site, while MCS 3003 has conducted water sampling at 19 stations in the area.
In Negros Occidental, the number of threatened LGUs has increased from 17 to 21 coastal tows and cities, to include Ilog, Cauayan, and Hinobaan towns and Sipalay City, all in southern Negros.
diehardbisdak August 31st, 2006, 08:53 AM ...i hope they will push through with this project including CEBU

P10B needed to realize Negros-Panay bridge
By Danny B. Dangcalan
* If approved and funded, the project is expected to be completed in three to four years
AT LEAST P10 billion or P1 billion per kilometer is needed for the proposed Negros-Panay Translink Bridge said Negros Occidental Governor Joseph Marañon Wednesday.
That is, if his preferred alternative route, which is from Tomongtong Point in Negros' E.B. Magalona town to San Juan Point in Banate town, Panay island is carried.
The Tomongtong-Banate route has an actual distance of 15.5 kilometers. However, the government can cut on cost for at least 5.5 kilometers, thus reducing the budget to only P10 billion instead of the P15.5 billion.
Marañon said the 5.5-kilometer distance will not cost as much because these portions are shallow and would not need as much materials as those in the deeper portions.
The proposal was presented Wednesday during a special meeting of the Visayas governors held at the Negros Occidental Governor's Conference Hall.
"The project is expected to be completed in three to four years, and considering the magnitude of the budget, it would need foreign assistance," Marañon also said.
Meanwhile, Marañon is also set to ask Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado, president of the League of Provinces of the Philippines, to request the National Government for foreign funding or access to foreign loans at a concessional rate should the proposed bridge push through.
The Negros-Panay bridge is part of the proposed Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP) bridge aimed at physically linking these three islands and boost its tourism, trade, commerce and investments. It is a part of the Trans-Visayas bridges, which will link the islands of Bohol, Mactan, Cebu, Leyte, Negros, Guimaras, and Panay.
All these are under the Trans-Visayas-Mindanao Highway/Waterway Linkage, generally known as the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) of the Mega Region project of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The SRNH, connecting the islands of Luzon, Mindoro, Panay, Negros, and Mindanao, has enhanced the public access to goods and services aside from creating new and bigger markets for inter-island trade and tourism activities, Marañon said.
He backed his claims by presenting a data, which showed that Leyte and Panay islands constitute more than 60 percent share of the total cargo by seaports.
Leyte ranks first in passenger traffic, Aklan, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental are the most visited places in Western Visayas, while Cebu enjoys the lead in the distribution of travelers in Central Visayas.
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways, (DPWH) also presented a separate proposal to construct a bridge connecting Panay and Guimaras island, and another connecting Guimaras and Negros island, Marañon said.
The Negros-Guimaras bridge, however, would cost a bigger budget compared to the proposed Negros-Panay bridge.
This as Negros to Guimaras is about 22 kilometers in distance while the route from Tomongtong Point in E.B. Magalona to San Juan Point, Banate in Panay island is only 15.5 kilometers.
As construction cost estimates is pegged at P1 billion per kilometer, the Tomongtong-Banate route, which can be cut by 5.5 kilometers, can be reduced to only P10 billion, as against the P20 billion needed for the Negros-Guimaras bridge, Marañon said.
A more accurate estimate would be disclosed after a feasibility study shall have been conducted, he said.
Marañon said the Banate-Tomongtong option is cheaper because both Banate and Tomongtong are less than three kilometers away from the national roads and will thus be more accessible to commuters.
Farfetched
"The Negros-Panay bridge seems a farfetched goal, but we have to start it now. If not now, then when? And if not us, who else will?" Marañon queried.
As a result, nine out of the 16 Visayas governors that came to the meeting agreed with the proposed project Wednesday.
These include Governors Salvacion Zaldivar-Perez of Antique, JC Rahman Nava of Guimaras, Neil Tupaz of Iloilo, Marañon of Neg. Occ., Erico Aumentado of Bohol, Gwendolyn Garcia of Cebu, George Arnaiz of Negros Oriental, Orlando Fua Sr. of Siquijor and Rogelio Espina of Biliran.
Presidential Adviser for Western Visayas Rafael Coscolluela, Philippine International Trading Corporation Chairman and President Roberto Pagdaganan, and Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief Hermogenes Esperon were also present.

....for now, Cebu also get its power source from Leyte Geothermal Plant, though, Cebu has power plants in Naga, in Cebu City and in Lapu-Lapu City but not enough to supply the increasing demand for electricity due to the mushrooming of industrial companies and new buildings in Cebu.... however, by 2010 (though, very far yet) Cebu will be power independent (fingers crossed) after KEPCO, a Coal-Powered Plant also in Naga (a Korean & Filipino Consortium) will be completed.... which is a multi-billion project...

diehardbisdak August 31st, 2006, 10:29 AM Thank you, John Gokongwei
HINDSIGHT By F. Sionil Jose
The Philippine STAR 08/27/2006
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m195/diehardbisdako/gokongwei.jpg
The brightest news several days ago that should have been emblazoned in the front pages of all our newspapers and greeted with hosannas in radio and television is John Gokongwei’s announcement that he was donating half of his fortune to philanthropy. He revealed this gladsome gift on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
The one and only time I met John Gokongwei was way back, at a dinner in the house of Washington SyCip. He still owned the Manila Times. I had worked at the old Manila Times (1949 to 1960) when it was owned by the Roceses, and retain fond memories of those years when the paper was the country’s biggest and most influential. That decade enabled me to see our beautiful country all the way from Sabtang in the Batanes to Sitangkai and the Turtle Islands in the south. Naturally I wanted to find out how the paper was doing and I asked John Gokongwei, voiced the hope that the new Times become like the venerable New York Times, open with its political choice, but still credible and influential, with booming advertising and an enterprising staff. He said he would wait for one of his children, who was then studying journalism in America, to run the paper. He also told my wife, who manages our little bookshop, of his interest in Philippine books, old and new. In that conversation, he surprised me with his Tagalog fluency. I suspected his Cebuano was perfect for he grew up in Cebu. In that brief encounter, he also impressed me with how he understood that Makati buzzword today, CSR (corporate social responsibility).
In February 1999, I questioned in this paper the loyalty of those Chinese Filipinos who send billions to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, money that should remain here so that we would have new industries that would give employment to Filipinos, and thereby prevent our women from going abroad to work as housemaids and as prostitutes.
In that article, I proposed that the Chinese schools be closed, that if the Chinese Filipinos are to learn Chinese, they should do so in special language schools. I suggested that the Chinese social and business associations be disbanded, that they should join Filipino business and social organizations – all this would hasten their integration in the society and, hopefully, inculcate in them loyalty to this country. I asked that they should maintain their loyalty to Chinese culture, but not to the Chinese state. And finally I asked: in the event of a war with China, on which side would they be?
To this day, I haven’t changed these opinions for which I got a lot of flak. One came from Robina, Gokongwei’s daughter.
In my reply to her, I wished her her father’s wisdom and never to forget that wealth carries with it a heavy responsibility to this nation.
John Gokongwei acquired his wisdom through years of trial and travail in his boyhood when, at the age of 13, his father died and he was left to support his siblings.
John Gokongwei did this diligently; with a bicycle, he brought his marketable goods wherever he could display them.
Then, World War II, a watershed in our history, which added to that wisdom and enterprise. And finally, after the war, through the help of the banker Albino SyCip, he obtained capital to establish his businesses in corn milling, then food processing, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and on to real estate, banking and Cebu Pacific, which is the only Philippine airline with completely new jets. JG Holdings, which he heads, is supposed to have more than a billion dollars – half of which he is now donating to charity through the foundation that bears his own name.
Like all of us octogenarians, John Gokongwei saw this country ravaged and savaged by its political scum, and its rapacious oligarchs. He knows full well the reasons why this country – once Southeast Asia’s most progressive – has become the sick man of the region.
He has already identified education as a priority with his donation of an engineering school to his alma mater, University of San Carlos in Cebu. (same alma mater of @diehardbisdak....hehhehehe)....(by the way, he donated P50 million to U.S.C.)
May I suggest that he look carefully all over the country, at the most depressed areas, and help similar schools in Mindanao, in the Cagayan Valley, in Samar – concentrate on government schools, including vocational high schools run by religious organizations, because these schools have fairly good chances of longevity.
The next priority is food production, so that no Filipino will ever starve or go hungry: preservation of food, support for agricultural schools.
The third is health, which is also Bill Gates’ global target: medical facilities for the very poor who die when they get sick because hospitals and medicines are beyond their reach.
Entrepreneurship and venture capital are also priority areas. As the economist Bernie Villegas has often expounded, we have a mass market – 85 million customers. Why do we have to import all those motorcycles from China? They are not complicated machines – we can manufacture them here. Build factories instead of shopping malls and fancy condominiums!
When Alexander the Great died – this man whose dominion included half of the world – his hands were exposed, open, to show that he was not bringing anything with him. For that is the absolute truth – when we die, we bring nothing to the grave but our name.
What John Gokongwei has demonstrated in this noblest of gestures is his faith in the Filipino people – unblemished faith not shared by those wealthy Spanish mestizos, those brazen Indios and those wealthy Chinese Filipinos who salted their money abroad to keep us poor.
What John Gokongwei has also done is dignify the fruits of capitalism, by giving much of it back to the people who helped him make it.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you, John Gokongwei.

LordCarnal August 31st, 2006, 01:26 PM ....for now, Cebu also get its power source from Leyte Geothermal Plant, though, Cebu has power plants in Naga, in Cebu City and in Lapu-Lapu City but not enough to supply the increasing demand for electricity due to the mushrooming of industrial companies and new buildings in Cebu.... however, by 2010 (though, very far yet) Cebu will be power independent (fingers crossed) after KEPCO, a Coal-Powered Plant also in Naga (a Korean & Filipino Consortium) will be completed.... which is a multi-billion project...

diehardbisdak August 31st, 2006, 06:36 PM Cebu Holdings mulls building more condos
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 09/01/2006
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m195/diehardbisdako/condo-parktower-1-and-2.jpg
Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) now considers building more condominiums at the Cebu Business Park after the sales success of Park Tower 1 and 2.
"We are inclined to put up condominium projects in CBP, but it is still on the drawing board," said CHI chief operations officer Francis O. Monera.
Monera said there is strong demand for office and residential condominium in Cebu, largely driven by the influx of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) investments, and other Information Technology (IT) outsourcing that comes to operate in Cebu.
In the next year or two, the 50-hectare CBP will be transformed into full business district as six buildings are currently under construction, including already the P1.4 billion worth of condominium project by a Korean company, the Tower Place Residential Condominiums.
Monera said CHI is still calibrating the market, as to when the company will start its condominium project inside the business park.
He said the 50-hectare CBP only has 12 lots left unsold, from a total of 100 lots available since the park was developed over a decade ago.
He however, defended that the plan of the company to put up more condominium in CBP will not affect the marketability of the Korean-developed condominium within the park.
He said the demand is so strong that competition will be overpowered because of the growing clamor for condominiums.
According to Monera, the growth of IT and tourism sectors in Cebu have both benefited the residential and office demand, thus developers are now being re-energized to put in more money for these kinds of projects.
In fact, he said CHI's newly introduced extra-high end residential subdivision in Lilo-an, Cebu has posted an encouraging sales return, with 70 percent take-up of the 86 lots after only few weeks of selling.
CHI posted a 106 percent growth performance for the first half of 2006. The company closed June 2006 with a P114 million net income, compared to the same period of last year's P55.3 million.
Gross revenue for the same period increased by 70 percent to P480 million.
Ayala Center Cebu (ACC), the company's shopping mall component contributed almost half of the total bottom line with P206 million gross revenue contributions for the period.
Other income contributors include sales of commercial and residential lots, condominium units, and sports club shares.
diehardbisdak August 31st, 2006, 06:42 PM HSBC to expand in Cebu, Davao
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 09/01/2006
Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) is currently making negotiations with the Bangko Sentral Ng Pilipinas (BSP) in a request for a branch expansion in Cebu and Davao.
HSBC chief executive officer (CEO) Warner Manning in an interview said that the bank has seen the opportunity to open up an additional branch in Cebu, and in Davao this year, or early next year.
He said the second branch in Cebu will be twice the size of its current branch located at the Cebu Business Park (CBP).
Of the 21 HSBC branches in the Philippines, most of these are located in Luzon, or in Metro Manila. This time, he said it is a fertile time for the bank to expand in the regional areas like Cebu and Davao.
Being an international bank, with presence in almost every key area in the globe with over 9,800 offices in 77 countries, Manning said the bank has find its niche to capture Filipino depositors especially those who are dealing with international trade.
In fact, the bank recently introduced its newest service desk in Cebu to provide assistance to the exporters and importers, by providing the "Trade Service", a dedicated service facility for global businessmen.
He said as soon as BSP will approve its application for an opening of one more branch in Cebu, HSBC will immediately work on the opening of its second branch here.
Aside from finding its niche in its international banking expertise, which effectively draws in more clients, HSBC which has been in the Philippines for over 131 years is seeing a good growth potential in the credit card business.
In an earlier interview with HSBC senior vice president for marketing and product development Suresh Nanoo, he said that immature market for credit card usage in the Philippines has given HSBC a huge opportunity to accelerate growth.
Although HSBC is not the number one credit card issuer in the Philippines, it claimed that it is the fastest growing issuer in the country.
In 2004, this global banking powerhouse, hit the 500,000 number of credit card membership, a 35 percent growth over the previous year.
Just like any credit card issuer, Nanoo said HSBC also has past due problems, but it's minimal and it is able to control its delinquency issues.
The bank is able to widen its consumer base through the credit card business, and reach out to broader market aside from corporate, because of the fast moving credit card trade.

fundraiser August 31st, 2006, 10:26 PM CEBU'S ECONOMIC PROFILE
Outside of Metro Manila, the City of Cebu is considered as one highly urbanized area and metropolitan center with the highest potential for further economic growth. The presence of other growth centers in the immediate vicinities and outlying areas has further strengthened Cebu City’s economic base despite the lack of proper economic plan and/or lack of proper coordination of economic activities within the Metro Cebu Area. This is precisely the rationale for the city’s involvement on the metropolitan planning concept as initiated by the Metro Cebu Development Projects and City Planners. This has been further strengthened by the development policies of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the Regional Development Plan which include a Regional Investment Program. The City’s (Cebu) economic development, with the undertaking of its own investment program would therefore be merged with the regional level.
Nevertheless, Cebu City’s role as the urban core and the central business district for the metropolitan area, its sphere of influence throughout the Visayas and Mindanao as an institutional, cultural, commercial and transport center, the presence of a vigorous private enterprises and a strong middle class; and, a stable peace and order situation has catapulated Cebu City as Premier City of the South with a considerable economic potential.
ECONOMIC POTENTIAL:
There is a need therefore to transform this potential into a dynamic and stable economy to attract further investment in-puts into the area, thru a more systematic, efficient and proper economic planning. This would need the coordination, and ideally, the integration of development planning activities for the whole metropolitan area. For its part, the City of Cebu would do well to form its own economic base study with the aim and establishing a comprehensive economic base structure taking into consideration its role as a center of trade and commerce.
The economic base study will be the ground work that would serve as a guideline in the formulation of economic policies that will help solve of the most basic and pressing problems that is facing the city today. These are:
*A lower performance level in really tax collections;
*A lower income/employment and affordability levels;
*Unemployment and under – employment; and,
*Inadequacy of power and water supply
The solution to these would therefore rest on the performance of the city government to generate the capacity and/or capability to counterpart these problems. It may be noted that the city’s scant financial resources could hardly cope with the increasing needs and demands of an ever increasing population coupled with the fact that the region had previously been receiving a low share of national expenditures particularly on capital expenditures. Fortunately enough, today, with the present local leadership and the concentrated attention that the National Government; domestic and foreign investors; and, foreign assistance agencies is now focusing on Cebu City in particular, prospects for accelerated economic growth is indeed brighter, as long as this is properly managed.
PRIVATE SECTOR:
It is naturally, concede that the private sector or private enterprises plays a major role in economic development although it can be said that this sector is not always in a position to have the necessary general overview. Thus, it is actually the government that must take the initiative and to act catalyst for economic growth and development. The city government should therefore provide the necessary impetus or incentives to promote and enhance economic growth.
For instance, the City Government should encourage the realization of the Cebu South Reclamation Project, which is to generate some 40,000 manpower requirements. The South Reclamation will have an area of more than 300 hectares and is expected to generate an estimated annual income of 30,000,000.00 pesos from real state taxes alone; aside from adding to the spatial dimension of the city which can provide land uses for housing, commerce and industry. This reclamation project will complement the development of the north Reclamation Area which is expected to become a new commercial center and shipping hub.
We cannot disregard, of course, the huge capital investments being made by some Cebu based businessman thru the establishments of more shopping malls, restaurants and recreation centers in the City of Cebu. We may mention White Gold, Robinson’s, ShoeMart and Cebu Business Park. All of these establishments, with their new buildings will not only enhance the city’s skyline but also add to the city’s revenues and employment opportunities.
The contribution of the private sector to the local economy help broaden the city’s economic base.
ECONOMIC OBJECTIVES :
The city’s principal objectives should be as follows:
*Generate employment opportunities
*Raise income
*Provide broader access to basic public services
These objectives can be attained by the formation of an economic base structure that will have to attract or generate capital formation as investment in-puts. This will also provide the potential for linkages in industries and services, and, therefore, generate more employment opportunities and raised income levels. In addition, manpower demands of industry will also enhance technical and/or skills development. Ultimately, economic development will also increase per capita income that will result in people’s propensities to spend, consume and save as part of the city’s economic cycle to support the factors of production. These factors will thereafter enhance the regional economy and thereby contribute its share to the Gross National Product (GNP).

fundraiser August 31st, 2006, 10:57 PM The Park's Rising Skyline
Cebu in 1992 had a phenomenal construction up trend seen to be a “construction boom.” But then came the economic slowdown, which started in 1997.
But despite this, an area in the city is a picture of hope, the Cebu Business Park that continues to build. Started some years ago, it is now a central area of a rising skyline for Cebu. This 50-hectare property has commercial buildings, such as the Ayala Center Cebu, Cebu Holdings Center, Park Tower I and II, Cebu City Marriott Hotel, Keppel Center, and Innove IT Plaza, and keeps on building.
Between the high rise structures are green areas and other buildings, such as the Cebu City Sports Club of world-class standards in a seven level structure, a joint billion-peso project of Ayala Land, Inc. and Cebu Holdings, Inc., a member of the Ayala Group of Companies.
It’s more than just establishing buildings but to contribute to the national development of the country through opportunities provided here in Cebu.
Ayala projects started in Luzon many years ago. This is a take off from the development projects, like Forbes Park, Dasmariñas, and Ayala Alabang, then the project in Baguio. Visayas and Mindanao projects will be handled by Cebu Holdings, Inc.
Cebu Business Park has given more reasons for people to stay here. It embraces the development plans in Makati. The Makati project started some 30 years ago, and it’s still continuing.
Cebu likewise is till growing. The next 20 years would be enough for Cebu. If there are more constructions, then there are more working slots for the people in Cebu. For instance, construction of homes will be seen in the Ayala property in Kang-irag, Ayala Heights Cebu, an integrated master planned development on a highly scenic mountain plateau.
With all of these construction activities in the offing and at hand, we hope that the people may not think the real estate development as something for the elite alone. It’s for everybody.

City council ok's road closure, traffic rerouting, Sept. 1 to Dec.
The Freeman 08/31/2006
Some streets in the city will be temporarily closed and traffic rerouted, from September 1 to December, due to works on the subway or Segment 3B-2 tunnel of the Cebu south coastal road project.
The city council yesterday approved the temporary road closure and the traffic rerouting scheme, after hearing the report of project manager Isoji Matsui, of the Metro Cebu Development Project, over the progress of the works.
Traffic Group chief Marlou Martinez said traffic signs-road is closed, detour, no entry, no left turn, this way, etc.-would be put up along Osmeña Road near the V. Sotto intersection, and on S. Osmeña Avenue between Legaspi and Gullas streets.
City planning and development manager Nigel Paul Villarete, also the project manager of the South Road Properties, said the Japan Bank for International Cooperation already approved the P1 billion loan for the construction of the tunnel and the overpass. The Department of Public Works and Highways, in implementing the project, already awarded the contract to the winning bidder, Kajima.
The subway or Segment 3B2 is one of the components of the viaduct section of the multi-billion-peso CSCR project, going under Plaza Independencia up to McArthur Boulevard.
It connects the P8-billion highway to the SRP coastal road, and consists of a 610-meter twin box tunnel and a 360-meter reinforced concrete retaining structure.
The 21-meter wide tunnel is about 0.97 kilometers long, with a four-lane road and a dividing wall in the center.
It was initially expected for completion on 2008, and it was designed to ease traffic from both the north and south of Cebu City.
The project however would displace 400 families, but most of them chose to go for relocation to the government's socialized housing in barangay Budlaan. The rest however settled to accept the disturbance - Garry B. Lao/RAEfee.

I really didn't notice at all because after seeing their church, we immediately continued our trip down south.
But generally, IMHO towns in southern cebu are cleaner, although much less developed, than the towns up north.
Jimbu September 1st, 2006, 06:05 PM Waterfront facilities to undergo facelift
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 09/02/2006
On top of the P60 million room and suite enhancement project of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casinos (WCCHC), the hotel is spending more for special preparations for the upcoming ASEAN Summit in December.
The hotel will have to re-do and improve its two Presidential Suits, one Penthouse, and the public comfort rooms, as well as the façade landscaping, in order to impress international dignitaries and their entourage that Cebu is an international destination.
WCCHC corporate communications manager Renee Y. Villasin said the hotel will have to spend separately for the ASEAN preparation and it should all be finished by next month.
As part of the company's refurbishing program, 179 superior rooms as well as 16 junior suites will be renovated and revamped. Twenty of the existing Standard Rooms will be upgraded into Superior Rooms and 36 existing suite rooms will be transformed into 29 executive suites, three bridal suites and four family suites.
"Our customers are more sophisticated and they expect more than just a place to sleep. So we're rising to demands for value for money and aim to exceed expectation. We intend to deliver great style, design and functionality, all at an affordable room rate, with a high comfort quotient. Management is very excited with this opportunity to upgrade our product," said WCCHC general manager Marco Protacio.
Simultaneously, the hotel will have to do these construction projects, Villasin said all are scheduled to be completed in October.
At least 17 head of states will need Presidential Suite accommodation each. Earlier, hotels and resorts were encouraged to prepare Presidential Accommodation facilities, and improve room and service quality as Cebu will be the world's foremost attention in the first week of December for the ASEAN Summit.
Early this year, Cebuano Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) undersecretary Francisco Benedicto called for a meeting with the hotel and resort operators to encourage hoteliers to embark facelift and improve of rooms and physical fixtures of the hotels and room, as well as extensive customer service training for hotel, especially the front liners.
About US$10 million is expected to be generated by Cebu's hotels and resorts in the upcoming ASEAN Summit that will be held on December 9 to 13, 2006.
This estimated amount that will benefit Cebu's economy, is based on a conservative calculation of over 10,000 guests that will arrive to Cebu, not only in the proper five-day event, but including already the previous meetings that will be held in Cebu in the preparation for the Summit.
The ASEAN was established in Bangkok on Aug. 8, 1967 by the five original member-countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Brunei Darussalam joined on Jan. 8, 1984; Vietnam on July 28, 1995; Laos and Myanmar on July 23, 1997; and Cambodia on April 30 1999.

Cebu’s solo promotion ‘a bit dangerous’ - AIM
Marketing Cebu to the rest of the world as an island distinct from the Philippines is “a little bit dangerous,” according to Asian Institute of Management (AIM) president Francis Estrada.
“This could create tension within the Philippines. Cebu, as well as the rest of the country, could not penetrate the global market alone,” he said an interview at the Cebu Parklane International Hotel yesterday.
He said Cebu cannot escape the fact that it is part of the Philippines.
To avoid the negative effects of political turmoil in the country in the 1990s, Cebu tourism was promoted as “an island in the Pacific.”
Survey
Estrada was keynote speaker of AIM’s “Business Competitiveness” forum, which was organized by the AIM Alumni Association-Cebu chapter.
He, however, praised Cebu’s business environment, which placed the city at the top of a number of categories in AIM’s local city survey last year.
“Nobody could beat Cebu in getting things done,” Estrada said.
With this capacity, he encouraged Cebu’s local government to take the lead in drawing out a concrete and clear agenda, which the Philippines can advocate during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in December.
“The Asean is a golden opportunity for Cebu and the country to raise what we want from the Asean. Apparently, the country has not seen this importance,” Estrada said.
He said Cebu leads 13 cities in the country in terms of profitability in doing business, access to financing, accessibility and linkages, availability of business support services and availability of skilled labor force.
Issues—such as lack of infrastructure like water and power—have, however, pulled down Cebu’s overall competitiveness rank. Cebu slumped below the top five most competitive cities in the country, to settle at 12th place.
Competitiveness
Cebu was replaced by Davao City in the country’s five most competitive cities, which include Las Piñas, Makati, Marikina and Muntinlupa.
Economist Cayetano Paderanga earlier said Cebu’s investment on infrastructure was not able to cope with the fast economic growth of the city.
He said Cebu could still regain its fame, if it invests largely in the needed infrastructure, especially on roads and water.
Cebu also ranked last of 12 metro cities, in terms of infrastructure, but landed first of the same 12 cities surveyed in terms of linkages and accessibility. (JBN)

Cebu ‘to gain’ from CICC
Even as he expressed confidence that the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) will be completed by November, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Luis Cruz said Cebu has a lot to gain from it—whether or not it will be ready in time for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit.
Cruz, in a brief interview with reporters yesterday, said the CICC is now 76 percent complete, and is even three weeks ahead of schedule.
“Whether the CICC is ready or not (for the summit), panalo pa rin ang Cebu. Win-win situation `yan,” Cruz told reporters.
In Kuala Lumpur, the international convention center that was built for last year’s Asean Summit is now fully booked until 2010. A similar thing could happen to CICC, he said.
The Capitol plans to cut the cost of site development for the CICC by employing its agriculture department for the propagation of plants and the landscaping.
The Provincial Government has just passed an additional budget of P200 million for the facility, bringing its total cost to P450 million.
“I will not allow the time constraints and the tremendous pressure upon us to finish the CICC to be used as an excuse to waste public funds,” said Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
Every day starting last Wednesday, Garcia visited the site as advised by Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, as her presence is expected to spur better and faster work. Garcia said her visits show that someone is “cracking the whip.”
For the second day in a row, Cardinal Vidal received a briefing from organizing officials of the Asean Summit in Cebu later this year.
The visiting officials also asked the cardinal to pray for the success of the summit, during a 30-minute closed-door meeting.
As for the CICC, Cruz said the structure will be completed in November, in time for the Asean Summit in December. Cruz attended the joint meeting of the Asean national organizing committee and the Cebu organizing committee yesterday morning at the Cebu Grand Convention Center.
He said the CICC area that will be used as the international media center will be completed within this month.
The local contractor will then turn it over to the National Government, which will set up the media equipment and other facilities.
Governor Garcia said they will soon be awarding the winning bidder for the closed-circuit television system for the CICC, which they got for less than P1 million.
She has ordered a redesign of the aircon installation plan, for a more economical one, and the fire alarm and sprinkler systems are also being redesigned because the prices submitted were too high.
On security, Cruz said everything is under control and no serious security threats have cropped up, so far.
“We will pray for the success and the security of our guests,” Cardinal Vidal said after yesterday’s briefing.
Among the officials that visited the cardinal at 3 p.m. were Ambassador Marciano Paynor, chairman of the national organizing committee; Assistant Secretary Cruz of the Department of Foreign Affairs- Office of Asean Affairs; Cebu City Government Public Information Officer Nagiel Bañacia; and Paul Hubahib, chairman of the newly formed Cebu Utilities Group.
Last Thursday, the Cebu Utilities Group, headed by Hubahib of the Visayan Electric Co., also visited the archbishop to give details on their project to clean up Cebu in time for the summit.
In relation to the summit, Cardinal Vidal also urged the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) to go to court regarding their investigation of those behind the vigilante-style killings in Cebu.
Lawyer Alex Tolentino, president of the IBP-Cebu City chapter, earlier announced they already know the identities of six to eight men behind the summary executions, including the mastermind.
When asked if the IBP should reveal the identities, the cardinal said, “they have to do, whether they like it or not...if they want that this summit will be successful.”
“Otherwise they will scare our visitors,” said the prelate. (ROV/JGA/MBG)

so we lack infras... so we need more road tunnels, more Mandaue Mactan bridges, more flyovers, more underpasses, more traffic lights... we should have mass transport system etc...
And I think more of infra budget is poured in Metro Manila that is why Cebu is suffering from lack of infra and as what Jingjing Osmeña said "unsaon ta man, di man ta manila, cebu ra man ta so wa tay mahino"... So it is not our (cebuanos, cebu officials) fault why we settled in lower rankings but it's (ONCE AGAIN) our centralized government.

Every city has its own strengths and weaknesses. Focusing on its weaknesses to improve is a way to move forward. Cebu will move forward. Ordinary Cebuanos do, and so must the officials.
Mandaue on the other hand, really lacks infrastructures. Bottleneck ang traffic. The city needs more major thoroughfares.
Water may be the biggest problem right now in Cebu, but if there is action (i know Cebuanos do have the capability to act), malalagpasan din 'tong problema. Abante Sugbo! :okay:

I think, pwede man nga ang CICC will consume almost half of the banner, then smaller photos of the other venues such as Shang, CCICC, etc... Sila na bahala, I trust these guys... They can deliver because Cebuanos can really deliver... hehe... (gi palanay lang gud nako ilang atay para ganahan mo trabaho!)

I'll just post it here since this might be of help to other forumers as well.
There's actually a "road" going there. You can access it via the Transcentral Highway. If you want to go the mountaineer way, there's a trail to follow from Brgy. Sapangdaku or Brgy. Kalunasan.
Ala National Geographic, you will have to cross rivers, pass by and "climb" at least 3 levels of waterfalls, and hike a very steep trail all the way to the top. :)
Also, from Brgy. Guadalupe, if you have a mountainbike, there's another trail that will take you to Buhisan Dam. The trail will take you to a forest that is part of the Central Cebu Protected Forest area.
It took me six hours to complete the journey but it was worth the adventure.

toffeechoy September 2nd, 2006, 06:22 AM unsa jud ang formal name sa gitukod nga convention center for the ASEAN summit diha sa may mandaue????? and pila ang max seating capacity sa biggest hall/arena/auditorium or whatsoever? ask lang ko kay if ever dako cya, pwede na makabid ang cebu city for other international events nga worldwide ang appeal diba? ex. ms. universe, mtv music awards (after thailand and singapore kita na sad), world championships of diff sorts etc etc. diba? mamarket naman nato ang CEBU as CEBU kay for example MTV music awards 2006 - CEBU Philippines at least mastarring na pirmi ang CEBu if we bid nga these events be brought here....la lang, ka think lang ko hehe.
dive-cebu September 2nd, 2006, 06:23 AM ^^ we really have a water problem, murag nahubas na ang dam....
LordCarnal September 2nd, 2006, 06:24 AM ^^ yeah mandaue roads are long overdue for widening, traffic kayo ang mandaue roads especially inig friday afternoon when students and workers in the city kay magdungag uli sa ilang mga balay sa northern municipalities
What we really lack for now is a "central" body with political power that will coordinate the development of the entire Metro Cebu especially in the field of infrastructure.
This would be similar to the MMDA. What we have now is more of just an advisory council with no real power. (Was it the Metro Cebu Development Council?)
You can actually notice the lack of coordination. When you are in Lapu-Lapu City, the main highways are fine including the bridges itself. Upon reaching Mandaue City, the roads get worse though it gets better when entering Cebu City. Then it gets worse again in Talisay City.
If we had this "metropolitan development authority" which Congressman Raul del Mar filed in Congress more than a decade ago, then we could see coordinated developments (of flyovers, highways, tunnels, railways, linear parks, waterfront developments, etc..etc..) from as far as Minglanilla all the way up to Danao City.
When this will be realized, I would very much be happy for Nigel Villarete to be the chairman.:okay: :okay: :colgate:

maximum capacity: PLENARY HALL - 3000 pax

Sinjin P. September 2nd, 2006, 06:27 AM ^ I also do not know why they turned off the only 2 traffic lights in the city of Lapu-lapu. And mind you, only the highways of Lapu-lapu are fine. If you go to the barangays, I do not know what you could say. Basta, kapila na jud ko nitxt para magCitizen Patrol para sa among barangay, but wala pa jud ko gitawgan :D
Anyway, sometimes, I'm annoyed by those TEDMAN traffic lights, but sometimes, okay ra siya if naa'y enforcer kay macontrol jud niya ang traffic light depending on the volume of vehicles

Me too, I'm also annoyed. We really should have this metropolitan development authority the soonest possible.
Cong. del Mar filed it already long ago, but I dunno why the bill is still a sitting duck.

Hey Joe!
By Kara Mae Muga Nevada
Is “fast food fine dining” something that may be too hard to chew in one sentence?
Tested taste buds tell it’s not oxymoronic to say so.
Take the Fifties Café’s menu, there’s no dish offered that you haven’t heard before. It’s a feast of comfort food—familiar and homey filling in play-safe stomachs. End-to-end of the menu, the U.S. cuisine is a well-represented flavor fusion map, there’s the East Coast’s fish n’ chips (Brit imports), the Midwest’s beef steaks and the South’s burritos and tacos (si, Mexican).
But these classics don’t come off from some fast food production line—the Farmer’s Meatloaf is a baked, not canned, goody and the servings are aptly, in American sizes, worthy of a meat-lover’s super-size burps. If the protein rush from saucy steaks is a feat, light stomachs can go for appetizing fingerlings and gargle it down with beer (local beers are 50% off from 6 to 8 in the evening).

ASEAN visitors to spend $400 a day
By Dale G. Israel
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 05:56am (Mla time) 09/02/2006
A FOREIGN visitor is projected to spend $400 a day during the week-long Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Cebu.
This gives an idea of the business opportunities that await the host of the international conference with the arrival of foreign dignitaries, ministers, and their delegations in December.
An official of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Cebuano entrepreneurs should take full advantage of this window.
Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Luis Cruz yesterday told ASEAN Summit organizers that businesses that cater to the needs of foreigners should prepare well to meet the demand for certain services.
“This will be the challenge to Cebu’s businesses – whether they would be able to provide for these needs,” Cruz said.
He said there would be demand for translation services, entertainment centers, restaurants, and businesses that provide computers and office tools during and after the summit.
Cruz, who sat in the joint meeting of the ASEAN Summit’s Cebu Organizing Committee and National Organizing Committee, said the DFA estimates each visitor would spend $400 a day for the summit’s one-week duration.
Even after the summit, Cruz said the presence of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) would still draw visitors to Cebu.
“The facility will be very helpful for Cebu, just like the convention facility in Malaysia,” he said.
Cruz explained that the convention center that Malaysia built for the 11th ASEAN Summit was immediately booked solid for the next two years.
Construction
Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday said that the designs for certain systems of the CICC like the landscaping, fire alarm and sprinkler systems had to be redone due to high costs.
She asked the Capitol’s bids and awards committee to implement the changes but assured the changes would not affect the target completion date of Nov. 15.
“I will not allow the time constraints and the pressure upon us to finish the CICC to be the license to waste public funds,” the governor said.
She said part of the landscaping plans were also changed to save on costs and to propagate the Provincial Agriculture’s Office decorative plants, including sampaguitas.
The sampaguita appears on the official logo of the 12th ASEAN Summit.
diehardbisdak September 2nd, 2006, 10:36 AM DPWH repairs roads around CICC
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 05:59am (Mla time) 09/02/2006
THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has pledged to shoulder P73 million worth of road repairs for Mandaue City in preparation for the ASEAN Summit in December.
According to Cheryl Ouano, the city's liaison officer to the summit’s organizing committee, the budget will go to road retreading and repainting of street markings.
The city was also set to receive P70 million from the public works department for street lights around the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).
Around P27 million of the road repair budget was set aside for the rehabilitation of roads around the CICC – C.D. Seno and W. Seno streets.
DPWH earlier informed Mayor Thadeo Ouano that the department would only improve the roads. Repairs on other systems, such as drainage, would be the responsibility of the city government.
Cheryl Ouano said that DPWH was also set to spend P50 million for the repair of national roads, including Mandaue Causeway.
The public works department will spend P12 million to rehabilitate C.D. Seno between the CICC and the vacant Uniwide warehouse.
Some P15 million will go to rehabilitate a portion of W. Seno from its intersection in Ouano Avenue towards the Uniwide warehouse.

Bibingka helps send this man’s kids to school
By Irene R. Sino-Cruz
Inquirer
Last updated 07:45am (Mla time) 09/03/2006
Published on page B2 of the September 3, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANDAUE CITY—The business of bibingka (rice cake) making may not seem like much, but to Zosimo Q. Mayol, known here as the “Bibingka King,” it not only provides livelihood for the family but also sends his children to school.
Mayol, whose bibingka is a local top seller, says he has been using an original recipe developed in the 1800s, with just a few revisions. The recipe came from his great grandfather Pablo and inherited by his grandfather Maximo and father Lorenzo.
The basic ingredients for the original rice cake of Mandaue are ground rice, coconut milk, white sugar and yeast. The taste, however, varies from one maker to another, depending on how they measure and mix the ingredients.
“I was still 12 or 13 years old, when I started helping out in the family business. While there were many who knew how to make bibingka in Mandaue, my grandmother was the first who thought of making a business out of it,” he says in Cebuano.
The other makers sell their products only during the fiesta, Mayol recalls. At that time, they sold three pieces of bibingka for 10 centavos.
Now, Cebu has eight or nine bibingka makers, but but they could not match the taste of Mandaue’s bibingka, he points out.
The family business was discontinued when his mother died in the late 1980s and it was not until the mid-1990s when Mayol decided to revive it. At that time, he saw that his take-home pay was not enough to pay for his sons’ education.
Mayol resigned as supervisor from a furniture company, where he had worked for 20 years, to put up his venture.
With P2,000 as initial capital, Mayol and his wife established Mayol’s Delicacies. Mayol prepares the ingredients while his wife cooks—a job that took about 12 hours or from midnight till noon. On Saturdays, they start cooking at 8 p.m. and finish at noon the next day.
His mother’s former customers started buying from him and, by word of mouth, his client base grew.
His sons help out in the business. One delivers at 5 a.m. every day while the others prepare the ingredients.
Despite the presence of many competitors, Mayol’s product is the most sought after. What makes his product different from the rest is the process and the quality of ingredients used.
While other makers use a machine to grind rice, Mayol has his family’s antique mortar and wooden pestles. He uses quality ingredients to maintain product standards.
Mayol does not use ovens for cooking, but follows the ancient way of placing hot embers on top of and below the mould. One bibingka takes 8-12 minutes to cook.
Mayol’s Delicacies makes up to 240 pieces of bibingka on regular days and an additional 100 pieces on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Despite the growing competition, Mayol is convinced that he made the right decision to go into business. Two of his sons have graduated from college, one is taking up engineering, and two others are in high school. In fact, he is thinking of expanding his business.
To respond to the increasing demand for his product, Mayol plans to move to a bigger area but this would require more capital. He also intends to improve the cooking area because many students and some foreigners come to observe how bibingka is made.
He is also developing new recipes, such as the “special” bibingka, which contains eggs and condensed milk as additional ingredients.

Cebu’s new ‘watering’ hole
By Jaime Picornell
Inquirer
Last updated 09:10pm (Mla time) 09/02/2006
Published on page D1 of the September 3, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
THE SHANGRI-LA’S MACTAN ISLAND Resort and Spa threw a bash for more than 300 to inaugurate its new Italian restaurant. Called Acqua, as in water, it is located in the old Paparazzi space.
Guests started arriving at the appointed hour of 11 a.m. Picture-window glass panels gave scenic views of the aquamarine pool, swaying palms, and the ocean beyond. Imagine moonlight nights.
Welcoming all were GM Tim Wright, with lovely wife Mona; resident manager Richard Simmons and German wife Eva; ever smiling executive assistant manager for F&B Stefan Kapek; director for marketing and sales Jopy Lopez; and executive chef Trevor Stevens.
Solicitous as ever were communications director Sharon Samarista, her assistant manager Lesley Ann Tan, and communications exec Samantha Lazarte. Busy as the proverbial bee was Vincent Tian, F&B manager.
Acqua’s executive chef, Marco Anzani, only appeared after the extensive buffet was laid out. Beside him was his bride of just a few months, Kate Dychangco.
Seafood galore
The mushroom soup was to die for, and so was the tomato cream. There was seafood galore—oysters, giant scallops, shrimps and prawns, crabs … The antipasti buffet groaned with delights. Every imaginable species of lettuce was on it, with dressings to go.
From a basket came crusty bread dipped in olive oil, broken into morsels and topped with either anchovies or one of the cheeses arrayed. An oven outdoors dispensed pizzas, the four-cheese variety be the favorite. People piled their plates with dessert to enjoy with the strong Italian coffee.
Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña and beauteous wife Margot were there, stopping by the table of Teresin Mendezona, Pinky and Winglip Chang for witty repartee. They were joined by slim-as-a-reed Margie Lhuillier.
A group of Manila media people loomed into view. Pretty Lia Bernardo had all eyes in her direction. She promised to be back in October, and at the Mactan Shangri-La, for an anniversary party of Metro Society mag. The latest issue was sold out in Cebu, said correspondent Maricris Encarnacion.
Music Theatre Australia provided Italian operatic arias for entertainment. Titled “Diva,” the program featured sopranos Tania de Jong and Dominique Oyston, plus tenor Jonathan Morton, guest artist from Pot Pourri.
Sing-a-long
The audience sang the lyrics or hummed the tunes of familiar pieces, specially the “toast” song from “La Traviata.”
Much applauded, too, were the Synchro Swans from Manila that performed an aquatic ballet in the pool.
The party was more than just having fun. It aimed to raise funds for charity through an auction of items that ranged from a box of prime wine from Bacchus, to frames done in rare Shagreen.
Five top of the line Jewelled bags were donated by Joanna Lhuillier, with her signature in them etched on a bar of sterling silver. Beling Go Ching Hai couldn’t resist them and got two.
The Shangri-La Mactan put up a two-night stay at the posh Panoramic Suite, with half a day of luxuriating at the Chi Spa’s Grand Villa, plus a festive dinner at Acqua. Michael and Joanna Lhuillier outbid everyone else.
By the time the opera stars started to warble “Time to Say Goodbye,” it was only then everyone realized it was 3 p.m., time set for the end of the affair.
But how could anyone tear himself/herself away from the wondrous event? Besides, the champagne kept flowing, as did the excellent Proseco premium white wine from Italy. Mikel and Claudine Ugarte, with their brood, stayed on until 7 p.m. And they were not the last to go.
Another recent memorable event at the Mactan Shangri-La was a Tea Appreciation Luncheon. Six different kinds of tea from as many exotic parts of China accompanied an equal number of dishes from the Chinese restaurant, aptly named Tea of Spring.
Chinese tea master Chao Zong Wan ruled supreme, wielding a meter-long spout to brew the leaves in a crystal teapot. Tea for the appetizer platter was “West Lake Ming Chin Longjin,” described as rich in Vitamin C.
“Perfect Harmony” to cool the body was served with the pumpkin broth, while the saint of all teas, “Taiwan Dongding Oolong,” came with the lemon fish fillet and squid. Good for cleaning and fighting bad cholesterol, we were told.
With the beef tenderloin and king prawns came “Old Pe-ur,” fermented for eight to 10 years. Sharon said it could really wash out even the worst cholesterol. So everyone eagerly sipped it.
We were just about ready for “Heavenly Robe,” jasmine flowers, that Sharon said was good for circulation and digestion. It came with a bowl of fried rice that concluded the meal.
But there was more—dessert of glutinous rice and ice cream. Of the tea, “Everlasting Memories,” Master Chao said it “has beauty benefits, eradicates pimples, alleviates ulcers, and increases vitality,” specially for men. Get it?
In the Shangi-La Mactan calendar is a Singaporean food fest until Aug. 27; the inaugural of a ballroom with a capacity for 800 in November; and the Asean Summit in December. All official delegates will staying there, including His Majesty, the Sultan of Brunei, we surmise.
LordCarnal September 3rd, 2006, 08:04 AM AIM's comment on Tourism Players of Cebu promoting the province as an Island in the Pacific (not mentioning as part of the Philippines), is dangerous........
.... during the time of Gov. Lito Osmena and up to now, it has been proven that it was very effective and in fact, it enticed more tourists to come to Cebu even if it was then very chaotic during the time of Pres. Cory Aquino... I don't know what made this AIM people give this comment .... IMO, they are alarmists S.O.A.B. !!! ... and they think that they know better how to run the province..... (Cebu is no longer a kid....,so to speak !)
...all i can say, CEBU has proven so many things.....!
I think this was during the time of Lito Osmeña (early 90s) after which the island got away with that kind of promotion. Even the top leaders of the island were against that kind of promotion.
Okay lang cguro "Island in the Pacific" because it's kinda rhetoric but to say "not part of the Philippines" is kinda controversial. It might even backfire because tourist who will arrive in the island will still see the Philippine Flag, the Philippines bureaucracy, etc..etc..

anyway, even though CICC is not that very big, it still has so many rooms for expansion and we can surely expect that once a private firm takes over it. nevertheless, cicc is certainly world-class. and i do believe that the current size of cicc is caused by time constraints. if it were to be bigger, i'd reckon they won't be able to finish it on time. so cicc, i love you no matter what!.. :D
LordCarnal September 3rd, 2006, 10:08 AM ^^
Yup bai, I think the CCICC in Waterfront Hotel is much bigger in capacity.

September 2, 2006: Oil Spills
Article posted September 01, 2006
In the midst of pointing fingers and passing on of responsibilities in the recent largest oil spill ever recorded in Philippine history, the Filipino’s innate value of “bayanihan” or unity in the midst of tragedy shines through.
The off shoot is a haircut revolution! From normal citizens, inmates, to students, legislators and beauty queens, Filipinos are donating their hair to help clean up the oil spill. Research has shown that hair helps to absord the oil in the water, making it a cheap but effective way to control the damage.
Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho mounted its own hair and foam collection, brought it to Guimaras and took part in the clean up drive. Ms. Jessica Soho personally went to the affected areas and witnessed the effects of the oil spill to the residents.
However, the Philippines is not only known for problems and bad news. In fact, we have a lot to celebrate and be proud of!
For a tropical country such as ours, it is quite amazing that we have ice skating champions and hockey players. These kids, deprived of natural snow and ice, sometimes just practice on plywood sprinkled with baby powder! There is no doubt, Filipinos can achieve beyond what their minds can conceive.
Also, it will not be long before Philippines may soon be dubbed as the "Hollywood of Asia”. Just recently, New Line Cinema tapped Anino Mobile, a subsidiary of Anino Entertainment to develop a video game for the movie, “Snakes on a Plane”. But long before our animators became known for their skills, the natural beauty of our sceneries have been used as set location for several Hollywood films such as Apocalypse Now, Platoon, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Brokedown Palace, to name a few.
Sitting on 19,000 square-meter compound in Mactan, Cebu is Bigfoot Entertainment's state-of-the-art studios and film school. It is home to the International Academy of Film and television where budding filmmakers train with film mentors from Hollywood and other film capitals of the world. Its Film Fund hopes to open new markets for homegrown Filipino films.
All these and more on Saturday, September 2, on Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, after Pinoy Pop Superstar.

August 12, 2006: Proud to Be Pinoy
Article posted August 11, 2006
Hollywood couple-of-the-moment Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt own several pieces of this man’s furniture. Time Magazine even lauded his creations! He is Kenneth Cobunpue, a Cebuano who designs and creates elegant furniture combining traditional materials like rattan with innovative production methods and modern aesthetic. His personal success put the Philippines on the map. He is among the world’s first class furniture-makers, paving the way for other Filipino furniture designers.
Meanwhile, Glenda and Henry have already left. Enter Inday and Juan doing the tango. These typhoons affected the Camanava and Candaba areas. But when there is flood, Pinoys also rise to the occasion! We have floating sari-sari stores, makeshift boats to transport passersby, umbrella holders, people carriers, and more. Is it survival instinct or ingenuity prompted by calamity?
An alcoholic has many faces. Hollywood’s Mel Gibson was recently arrested because of drunk-driving. Locally, StarStruck Survivors Jackie Rice and Iwa Moto have gotten their licenses suspended. Allegedly they’ve been caught intoxicated on certain occasions.
It is easy to get drunk in this country. Even minors can avail of alcoholic beverages at local retail stores.
It’s not a secret that drunkenness is trouble to both a person’s health and public’s safety. How dangerous really is alcoholism in the Philippines?
Watch out for these segments on Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.
